Today was an easy ride along shaded roads. The final 10 km passing through the vinyards of Vouvray. We are staying with the sisters of St. Martin and the picture shows us in the Basilica. St. Martin is well known for giving away half of his cape to a poor person. More than 290,000 French are named after him making this one of the most popular names in France.
There are also more storys about his animals. St. Martins donkey taught the early whinemakers the importance of pruning. The vines that the donkey had nibbled on, produced the most fruit later.
When St. Martin died his body came into the hands of the people of Poitiers. However while they were sleeping the People of Tours stole his body and returned it by boat via the Loire river. Legend has it that the trees and flowers along the river blossemed like in summer.
This week French and Belgian children return to school. Along our route we see teachers moving furniture and children with new book bags.
