We left the small village of Nanteuil this morning. Ninty percent of the residence are English. For the first time we climbed more then 1000 m during the trip which started out in 17° weather and ended with 34° . Based on the road book this should have been a "piece of cake" but we could not have been more wrong. People tell us that if we survive the hilly Charente we will be ready for the hills in Spain. We hope so. The refreshments under the local marketplace could not have been more satisfying.
The most beautiful time of the day is the morning. It is not too hot and not too cold. The sun is shining and there is little or no wind. Up to now Ward had commented that we had seen little wild life along the way but this morning a mother deer and her two little ones suddely ran accross the road only 50 m in front of us. We do see numerous small animals victims of fast moving cars.
We also saw the first Belgian pelgrims today. Two sons are trying to help their father ride from Poitiers to Santiago. But they only have two weeks. The sons alternate riding and the second drives the car while the father rides all the time. We hope not to see him again because then he will be moving too slow to reach the goal in the short times they have.
