Om 25 jaar bestaan van ons project en 15 jaar vzw af te sluiten werd Father Francis uitgenodigd om aanwezig te zijn op onze jaarlijkse peetouder- en sympathisantendag. De dag werd ingezet met een eucharistieviering in Onze Lieve Vrouw van Smarten in Merksem die werd voorgegaan door Father Francis. Dank zij de schermen konden alle aanwezigen de vertaling van de Engelse teksten volgen. In zijn homilie onderstreepte Father Francis het belang van het project dat in al die jaren aan zovele kansarme kinderen de toegang tot degelijk onderwijs verschafte. Vele onder hen voorzien ondertussen in hun eigen levensonderhoud en dat van hun familie. In eenvoudige woorden, recht uit het hart, drukte hij de dankbaarheid uit van de kinderen en hun ouders. Dat zijn woorden indruk hebben gemaakt op de aanwezigen bleek duidelijk uit de omhaling waarvan de opbrengst integraal naar het project gaat.
Zij die hadden ingeschreven konden daarna met Father Francis aanschuiven aan een mooi gevulde koffietafel in het Wilgenhof en om 14 uur begon de eigenlijke peetouder- en sympathisantendag. Na een korte inleiding door Father Francis kregen de aanwezigen de kans om persoonlijk met Father Francis te praten. Door de eerder beperkte opkomst op deze feestelijke namiddag kreeg iedereen ruimschoots de tijd om in alle rust met hem te praten en op die manier zijn gedrevenheid en bezorgdheid voor de kansarme kinderen te ondervinden.
Naast een gesprek met onze gast konden de aanwezigen ook zien hoe glasparels en zentangles gemaakt worden. Zij konden die ook kopen net als glasjuweeltjes, geschenkdoosjes, vilten popjes, poppenkleedjes en prenten. Bij de koffie of thee kon men van een heerlijk stukje cake genieten; cakes die gemaakt werden door een peetouder en een sympathisant!
Hier hoort natuurlijk een woord van oprechte dank aan al wie op welke wijze ook heeft bijgedragen aan het succes van de eucharistieviering, koffietafel en “Meet & Greet”.
Na deze feestelijke zondag verbleef Father Francis nog een aantal dagen in Merksem en bezocht o.a. de Middelbare Steinerschool De Es in Berchem waar hij de kans kreeg om alle leerlingen te vertellen over India en Father Quadras. Dit bezoek was gekoppeld aan de jaarlijkse actie van de school voor een goed doel en dit jaar maakten de leerlingen een 12km lange gesponsorde wandeling. De opbrengst van deze actie was schitterend en we zijn de peetouder/leerkracht die dit initiatief nam en de directie, de leerkrachten en alle leerlingen van De Es die het waarmaakten zeer dankbaar. Dit geeft ons een extra armslag om nog meer kinderen te helpen hun droom van een betere toekomst waar te maken.
Father Francis bezocht ook de Kristus Koning school voor Buitengewoon Secundair Onderwijs in Sint-Job-in’t-Goor. Father Francis, zelf directeur van een school in Ballari, kreeg hier een uitvoerige rondleiding door de verschillende ateliers waar de leerlingen voorbereid worden op een latere loopbaan. De rondleiding werd afgerond door een bezoek aan de kerk en het klooster van de Broeders van Liefde en een ontmoeting met de daar nog verblijvende op rust gestelde broeders. Ook hier een woord van dank aan de directeur, de leerkracht gids en de Broeders.
Father Francis was zeer gevoelig voor de warme ontvangst die hij overal kreeg en nam, naar eigen zeggen, ontelbare mooie herinneringen terug mee naar India.
Father Francis was invited to be present at our yearly Foster Parents and Friends Day that concluded 25 years of existence of our project as well as 15 years as non-profit organization. The day started with a holy mass celebrated by Father Francis in Our Lady of Sorrows in Merksem. The translation of the English texts was projected on the screens so that everybody could easily follow. In his homily Father Francis stressed the importance of the project who provided so many poor children the access to a good education. Meanwhile many of them can take care of their own … as well as that of their family. He expressed the gratitude of the children and their parents in simple words right from the heart. Considering the result of the collection it became clear that his words had found their way into the heart of those present.
Those who did register assembled in the parish hall for a nice bread meal and as of 14:00 the Foster Parents and Friends Day officially started. After a short introduction by Father Francis all present got the opportunity to speak him personally. Due to the rather limited attendance everybody got ample time to talk with Father Francis and experienced the intensity of his dedication for the poorest children.
Aside of a good conversation with our guest those present could see how pearls of glass and zentangles are made. They could purchase them as well as glass jewelry, gift boxes, little puppets in felt, clothes for dolls and colorful images. A foster parent and a friend baked delicious cake that went very well with a cup of coffee or thee.
A sincere “thank you” is at his place for all those who participated in any way to make the holy mass and the “Meet & Greet” meeting into a success.
Following this festive Sunday Father Francis spent some more days in Merksem and visited the secondary Steinerschool De Es in Berchem where he had the opportunity to speak about India and Father Quadras to the students. His visit was coupled to a yearly action organized by the school for a charity and this year the students made a 12 km sponsored walk. The financial result was fantastic and we are very grateful to the foster parent/teacher who took the initiative, the direction of the school, the teachers and all the students who made this possible. This gives us an extra boost to help even more children to realize their dream of a better future.
During his stay Father Francis also visited the Kristus Koning school for Special Secondary Education (children with a mental handicap). Father Francis, himself director of a school in Ballari, received an extensive tour of the ateliers where the students are prepared for future job. The tour ended with a visit to the church and monastery of the Brothers of Charity and a short meeting with the retired brothers still living there. Father Francis was very sensitive to the warm welcome that he received everywhere and returned home with innumerable beautiful memories as he told himself.
