where are you this moment? only in my dreams.
you're missing, but you're always a heartbeat from me.

ziet alles verwonderd, ziet alles heel schoon.

you, whom I do not tell that all night long
i lie weeping,
whose very being makes me feel wanting
like a cradle.
you, who do not tell me, that you lie awake
thinking of me:--
what, if we carried all these longings within us
without ever being overwhelmed by them,
letting them pass?
look at these lovers, tormented by love,
when first they begin confessing,
how soon they lie!
you make me feel alone. i try imagining:
one moment it is you, then it's the soaring wind;
a fragrance comes and goes but never lasts.
oh, within my arms i lost all whom i loved!
only you remain, always reborn again.
for since I never held you, i hold you fast.

"over liefde…? belachelijk…!"

daar stonden in langzaam
en laaghangend licht
twee reeën een ogenblik stil,
toen vluchtten zij snel en gewichtloos
het struikgewas in
hier en daar werden bladeren geel
dat was wat je daarna zou zeggen
'september, de herfst komt er aan'

to the soft power of the feminine
gently stroking all closed hearts to yield, to care
for water’s sweet taste
for breezes’ balmy caress
for grasses’ willowy waving
for fire’s radiant glowing
for all sentient beings’ cooing, laughing, peeping, crying.
to the tough power of the feminine
firmly cutting to the heart of all hearts
to reveal and to acknowledge
the water’s wild flowing
the wind’s fierce howling
the earth’s wounded body
the fire’s uncontrollable devouring.
to the soft, tough power of the feminine
to proclaim and to honor
truth’s exposing light
suffering’s raw flesh
living’s pulsing blood
dying’s sweet, fearful, sad yearning.
may this soft, tough, invisible, invincible power
give birth to
all the love
all the peace
all the truth
all the beauty
all the richness
all the abundance
that exists already in our heavens
may it all come down to earth.

if, during life's up and downs,
our spirit remains unperturbed,
worry-free, pure and unflustered,
that is the greatest of all happiness

ce que tu donnes, c'est à toi pour toujours;

don't go far off, not even for a day, because --
because -- I don't know how to say it: a day is long
and I will be waiting for you, as in an empty station
when the trains are parked off somewhere else, asleep.
don't leave me, even for an hour, because
then the little drops of anguish will all run together,
the smoke that roams looking for a home will drift
into me, choking my lost heart.
oh, may your silhouette never dissolve on the beach;
may your eyelids never flutter into the empty distance.
don't leave me for a second, my dearest,
because in that moment you'll have gone so far
I'll wander mazily over all the earth, asking,
will you come back? will you leave me here, dying?

to truly consecrate the hour.
I am much too small in this world, yet not small enough
to be to you just object and thing, dark and smart.
I want my free will and want it accompanying
the path which leads to action;
and want during times that beg questions, where something is up,
to be among those in the know, or else be alone.
I want to mirror your image to its fullest perfection,
never be blind or too old
to uphold your weighty wavering reflection.
I want to unfold.
nowhere I wish to stay crooked, bent;
for there I would be dishonest, untrue.
I want my conscience to be true before you;
want to describe myself like a picture I observed
for a long time, one close up,
like a new word I learned and embraced,
like the everday jug, like my mother's face,
like a ship that carried me along
through the deadliest storm.
