GLOBETROTTERS HAGELAND. WAANRODE.
KASTEELHOEVE "VANDER VELPEN" 1846-1854
Waanrode het bloemendorp van het Hageland. In het verleden hebben we hier prachtige wandelingen gemaakt, maar deze keer is het een slappe bedoeling. Andere jaren is de markt en de kerk open vandaag begint alles pas om 15.00 uur, dan zijn de wandelaars al bijna allemaal weg, het is nu een gewone wandeling. En deze is ook al veel minder. Bijna allemaal op verharde wegen.
Veel huizen die in het verleden prachtig bebloemd waren, zijn nu zonder bloemen. De kleine prachtige huizen aan het vertrek van de wandeling die vroeger een bloemen paradijs waren staan er nu maar kaal bij. Spijtig, zo zal het bloemendorp zijn titel van bloemendorp gauw verliezen. De Waanrodenaren hebben een spotnaam: de torendraaiers. In geen enkele geschreven bron is er een vermelding van de naam "torendraaier" terug te vinden. De scheldnaam heeft dus enkel via mondelinge overdracht de geschiedenis overleefd. Ik vermeld wel uitdrukkelijk scheldnaam omdat enkele oude landbouwers zich herinneren dat ze tijdens hun schooljaren door kwajongens uit de omtrek werden aangeduid als de "torendraaiers van Waanrode".
Een dorp vormde, vroeger nog meer dan nu, een hechte gemeenschap waarin iedereen iedereen kende en ook voor mekaar opkwam. Inwoners van naburige dorpen werden vaak minachtend en spottend bekeken. Dikwijls was er zelfs tussen de verschillende dorpsgemeenschappen een vete zodat een scheldnaam een noodzakelijk iets was om de inwoners van de naburige dorpen aan te duiden. Zo kennen we de "heren" van Geetbets, de "kinderen" van Kortenaken, de "joden" van Bekkevoort, de "bezembinders" van Schoonderbuken, waarbij telkens een al of niet slechte eigenschap van de inwoners benadrukt werd. Dit kan ook zo geweest zijn met de "torendraaier": een verbastering van het gezegde "rond de pot draaien", waarmee men de Waanrodenaren wou toeschrijven dat zij steeds rond de zaken heen praatten. Maar met evenveel recht en reden kan men andere verklaringen naar voren brengen. De naam "torendraaier" zou kunnen wijzen op een typische beroepsbezigheid die hier werd uitgeoefend. Pottenbakkers draaiden vroeger hun te maken voorwerp op een tollende, draaiende tafel. Vermits in de ondergrond klei terug te vinden is, lijkt dit geen onlogische verklaring. Nog een mogelijke verklaring kan gegeven worden als men het woord "torendraaier" letterlijk opvat. Mensen die rond de toren draaien, zijn waarschijnlijk aan een ommegang bezig. Dit zou erop duiden dat er veel processies werden gehouden in het dorp. Dit zijn echter allemaal gissingen.
De juiste verklaring moeten we heel eenvoudig gaan zoeken bij de verbouwing van de kerk in 1902. Vóór die grote restauratie had de kerk een echte westertoren. De nieuwe constructie kreeg echter een zuidwestertoren. De toren was dus letterlijk gedraaid t.o.v. de kerk zelf. Zo kunnen we toch nog iets toevoegen aan het verhaal van de wandeling in Waanrode.
