The Thousandth And Tenth Day Of The Human Totem Pole
    Composer(s): Don Van Vliet
Performer(s): Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band

The thousandth and tenth day of the human totem pole
    The morning was distemper grey
Of the thousandth and tenth day of the human totem pole
The man at the bottom was smiling
He had just finished his breakfast smiling
It hadn't rained or manured for over two hours
The man at the top was starving
The pole was a horrible looking thing
With all of those eyes and ears
    And waving hands for balance
There was no way to get a copter in close
    So everybody was starving together
The man at the top had long ago given up
But didn't have nerve enough to climb down
At night the pole would talk to itself and the chatter wasn't too good
Obviously the pole didn't like itself, it wanted to walk!
It was the summer and it was hot
And balance wouldn't permit skinning to undergarments
It was an integrated pole, it was taking on an reddish brown cast
Exercise on the pole was isometric
Kind of a flex and then balance
Then the highest would roll together
    The ears wiggle, hands balance
There was a gurgling and googling heard
A tenth of the way up the pole
    Approaching was a small child
    With Statue of Liberty doll

    Composer(s): Ken Darby; Lionel Newman
    Performer(s): Tennessee Ernie Ford;
    and various other artists

There is a river called The River Of No Return
Sometimes it's peaceful and sometimes wild and free!
Love is a trav'ler on The River Of No Return
Swept on for ever to be lost in the stormy sea
Wail-a-ree I can hear the river call (no return, no return)
Where the roarin' waters fall wail-a-ree
I can hear my lover call come to me (no return, no return)
I lost my love on the river and for ever my heart will yearn
Gone gone for ever down The River Of No Return
    Wail-a-ree wail-a-re-e-ee
She'll/He'll never return to me! (no return, no return, no return)

The Thousand Islands Song (Oh! Florence)
Composer(s): Bob Hilliard - Carl Sigman
    Performer(s): Arthur Godfrey
    and multiple other artists

(Row, row, row your boat, up the river St. Lawrence)
(Hollering, hollering, hollering, hollering) Hollering for Florence (Row your boat)
I left the one I love on one of the Thousand Islands (Row, row your boat)
But unfortunately I can't remember which one
So I row, row, row, row up the river St. Lawrence
And I'm hollerin' Florence, oh! where can you be?
(Where, oh, where, where, oh, where can she be?)

I wouldn't be so lost up here on the Thousand Islands (Row, row, your boat)
If we only had met down on the Isle of Capri
Now I just can't find the place you marked on the post card
Call the Navy and Coast Guard
Oh! where, where can you be?
(Where, oh, where, where, oh, where can she be?)

Mustn't take a nap, gotta watch the map
    That was Island seven-ninety-three
Row from shore to shore, knock on every door
How many Thousand Islands can there be?

I better find you soon 'cause I see a thousand row boats (Row, row your boat)
And the fellers inside look mighty lonesome to me
When they row, row, row, row up the River St. Lawrence
They're all hollerin' "Florence, oh! where can you be?"
(Row, row, your boat up the River St. Lawrence
Hollering, hollering, hollering, hollering, hollering for Florence)

I better find you soon 'cause I see a thousand row boats (Row, row your boat)
And the fellers inside look mighty lonesome to me
When they row, row, row, row up the River St. Lawrence
They're all hollerin' "Florence, oh! where can you be?"
(Row, row, your boat) Hey Florence (Row, row your boat)
Hey Florence! Hey Florence! Hey Florence!
Hey Flowie! You're harder to find than Chloe!

    Come On To Nashville Tennessee
    Composer(s): Walter Donaldson

I want to tell you that you've been real nice to me
take a look and you can see I'm as happy as can be
I leave tomorrow just a word before I go
    I'm delighted so delighted
Here's the thanks I want to show

If I should tell you 'Bout my mother's bill of fare
And the good things you can share
You'd be hungry as a bear
There's something pleasing In the Southern atmosphere
When you strike it you will like it
You can stay for a year

Come on along with me and meet my family
How glad they're goin' to be to have your company
Altough you'll find no fancy style
They're going to greet you with a smile
You'll be itchin', you'll be itchin' to get around the kitchen
    Oh, if you only knew
    What mother thinks of you
    My friends are waiting too
    they're all expecting you
Because I wrote them all about you
Now I can't go home without you
Don't be bashful come on to Nashville
    Come on to Nashville, Tennessee

Come on in begin the beguine together
    Honey
    Sugar
    Baby
Come on in I'm gonna teach you how to swim
    Right up
    The river of love
    The river of love

    Come on down
we can paint the town together
    Come on round
and lay the roses down forever
    Honey
    Sugar
    Baby
Come on in I'm gonna teach you how to swim
    Right up
    The river of love
    The river of love

    When the water falls
and we walk on the river
    And if you believe it
    we can do it forever
    By the thunder and rain
    and the pleasure and pain
We can do it again and again and again
Swim right up, swim right up, swim right up
Right up the river of love
    The river of love

    The Thoughts Of Mary Jane
    Composer(s): Nick Drake
First release by: Nick Drake - 1969

    Who can know
    The thoughts of Mary Jane
    Why she flies
Or goes out in the rain
    Where she's been
    And who she's seen
In her journey to the stars

    Who can know
    The reasons for her smile
    What are her dreams
When they've journeyed for a mile
    The way she sings
    And her brightly coloured rings
Make her the princess of the sky

    Who can know
    What happens in her mind
Did she come from a strange world
    And leave her mind behind
    Her long lost sighs
    And her brightly coloured eyes
Tell her story to the wind

    Who can know
    The thoughts of Mary Jane
    Why she flies
Or goes out in the rain
    Where she's been
    And who she's seen
In her journey to the stars

Come On Over To My Place
    Composer(s): Barry Mann; Cynthia Weil

Little girl, you look so lonesome
I see you are feeling blue
Ain't no use in staying at home
I know what you should do

Come on over to my place
Hey girl, we're having a party
We'll be swinging, dancing and singing
    Baby, come on over tonight

Now, you don't need the address
To find out where we'll be
'Cause you can't help hearing the music
Halfway down our street, so baby

Come on over to my place
Come on, we're having a party
We'll be swinging, dancing and singing
    Baby, come on over tonight

When we get tired of dancing
    And things start getting slow
That's the real best out of the evening
To turn the lights down low, so baby, baby

Come on over to my place
Hey girl, we're having a party
We'll be swinging, dancing and singing
    Baby, come on over tonight

    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Come on over to my place
Hey you, we're having a party
We'll be swinging, dancing and singing
Oh baby, won't you come on over tonight

    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Come on over to my place
Hey you, we're having a party
We'll be swinging, dancing and singing
Oh baby, won't you come on over tonight

    River Of Love
    Composer(s): Otha Young; Juice Newton
    Performer(s): Juice Newton

Listen to the story 'bout the man who tried
To drink from the river 'til the river ran dry
He drank so long and he drank so hard
The river ran dry and it broke his heart

River of love, river of love
Drink from the river, fly like a dove
The river runs long, the river runs free
But the river of love never runs to me

Many are the times that he called his love
Called her to his side 'til he had enough
Then came a wind to blow her away
Never did he drink from the river that day

River of love, river of love
Drink from the river, fly like a dove
The river runs long, the river runs free
But the river of love never runs to me

Pricked by a thorn and heart will bleed
Red as a rose for the world to see
Chained by time to the river side
A fool will drink 'till the river runs dry

River of love, river of love
Drink from the river, fly like a dove
The river runs long, the river runs free
But the river of love (never runs)
River of love, river of love
Drink from the river, fly like a dove
The river runs long, the river runs free
But the river of love never runs to me

    The Third Man
Composer(s): Anton Karas - Walter Lord
First performance by: Anton Karas - 1949
    Covered by multiple other artists

When a zither starts to play
    You'll remember yesterday
    In its haunting strain
    Vienna lives again
    Free and bright and gay
In your mind a sudden gleam
    Of a half forgotten dream
Seems to glimmer when you hear The Third Man Theme

Once again there comes to mind
    Someone that you left behind
    Love that somehow didn't last
In that happy city of the past
Does she still recall the dream
    That rapture so supreme
When first she heard the haunting Third Man Theme?

Carnivals and carousels and ferris wheels and parasols
The Danube nights, the dancing lights again will shine
    The zither's sweet refrain
    Keeps swirling in your brain
    Like new May wine
    Strauss waltzes, candle-glow
And the laughter of long ago
Fill the magic chords and make it seem like today

You never knew that you could be
    Enchanted by a melody
The years will never drive it out
    You don't know why
It's something you can't live without
You hear it in the twilight hush
And in the morning traffic rush
    A song that's always new
In your heart a part of you
Oh, shines so brightly when you hear The Third Man Theme

When a zither starts to play
    You'll remember yesterday
    In its haunting strain
    Vienna lives again
    Free and bright and gay
In your mind a sudden gleam
    Of a well remembered dream
Seems to glimmer when you hear The Third Man Theme

Once again there comes to mind
    Someone that you left behind
    Love that somehow didn't last
In that happy city of the past
Does she still recall the dream

    Come On My Boy
    English Title: I Know A Place - 1965
    Composer(s): Carl Blecher; Tony Hatch
    Performer(s): Petula Clark

Da liegt was in der Luft so wunderbar
Bei dem ersten Blick ist alles klar
Und ich sage Dir, come on my boy die Musik ist schoen und die Liebe ist gerade hier
Come on my boy und tanz mit mir

Come on my boy und tanz mit mir
    Yeah! Yeah!

Come on my boy und tanz mit mir
Come on my boy and tanz mit mir

    River Of Dreams
    Composer(s): Glenn Frey; Jack Tempchin
    Performer(s): Glenn Frey

    On a dark December morning
When the sun refused to shine
    Spent another sleepless night
Got so much on my mind
Think I finally know what's wrong
I think I've gotta leave this place behind
So I said wake up, Linda,
    I've had a dream
I dreamed we moved away from here
To a place I'd never seen
Where the nights were long and cold
And the air was fresh and clean.
    And there we were standing
    Underneath the western sky
Beside a home we built ourselves
Way up in the mountains high
And we lived happy there, just you and I
    On a river of dreams
There's no need to worry now
    Cause I've got a plan
We don't need this modern world
    I'm not a modern man
We're gonna get ourselves off these city streets
We're gonna get back on the land
There's a whole lot of people out there
Feel just like you and me
They'd love to pack their leavin' trucks
And say goodbye to all their misery
What'd ya say we pack up that Camaro, honey
And chase the sun until we're free
And if I could I'd lift you up on angel wings
We'd fly away and never worry about a thing
We'd know the joy and riches a simple life can bring
On a river of dreams, on a river of dreams
So get your things together now
    I'll be getting mine
I've finally got the feeling girl
    The sun is gonna shine
You know people don't run out of dreams
People just run out of time
Let's find that place out there
    Underneath the western sky
    We'll build a home ourselves
Way up in the mountains high
We'll live happy there 'til the day we die
    On a river of dreams
And we'll have stars to wish on every single night
We'll build a fire and make love by candlelight
We'll do our moondance 'til we get it right
On a river of dreams, on a river of dreams
I can see us standing by the river
    Holding hands beside the river

The Thing-Ummy-Bob (That's Gonna Win The War)
Composer(s): David Heneker - Gordon Thompson
Performer(s): Arthur Askey & Gracie Fields

You've heard of Florence Nightingale, Grace Darling and the rest
You've all seen Greta Garbo and her busom friend, Mae West
But there's a little lady, I want you all to meet
She's working on munitions and she lives just down the street

She can't pretend to be, a great celebrity
But still... she's most important in her way
The job she has to do, may not seem like much to you
But all the same, I'm very proud to say...

She's the girl that makes the thing that drills the hole
that holds the spring that drives the rod that turns the knob
    that works the thing-ummy-bob
She's the girl that makes the thing that holds the oil
that oils the ring that takes the shank that moves the crank
    that works the thing-ummy-bob

    It's a ticklish sort of job making a thing for a thing-ummy-bob
Especially when you don't know what it's for
But it's the girl that makes the thing that drills the hole
that holds the spring that works the thing-ummy-bob
    that makes the engines roar
And it's the girl that makes the thing that holds the oil
that oils the ring that works the thing-ummy-bob
that's going to win the war

She's not what you would call, a heroine, at all
I don't suppose you'll even know her name
And though she'll never boast, of her important post
She strikes a blow for Britain just the same

    Come On Little Angel
    Composer(s): Thomas Bogdany; Ernest Maresca
    Performer(s): The Belmonts

Come on little angel won´t you dance with me
Well at last I know you know it was plain to see
We did the Mashed Potato and it sure was fun
Now ev´rybody wants to see the way it was done, now
Come on little angel hear the band playing loud
Turn around see them forming a crowd
And now, little angel, now that you´re in the groove
You hear them all a-clapping as we both start to move
Now, come on, come on little angel, come on
Come on little angel, come on
Come on little angel, come on, come on

Come on little angel now the lights are down low
It´s really getting late and we have to go
Well thank you little angel for that wonderful kiss
And now you´re gonna tell me that you´re doing the Twist
Around and around and up and down
Around and around and up and down
Around and around and up and down
Around and around and up and down
Yes, little angel, it sure is fun
    Ev´ry time we´re dancin´ she´s a-right on time
She moves to the left, she moves to the right
She feels the beat and she dances all the night

Why don´t you come on little angel now the lights are down low
It´s really getting late and now we have to go
Well thank you little angel for that wonderful kiss
And now you´re gonna tell me that you´re doing the Twist

Around and around and up and down

    River Man
    Composer(s): Nick Drake
    Performer(s): Nick Drake;
    and various other artists

Betty came by on her way
Said she had a word to say
    About things today
    And fallen leaves

Said she hadn't heard the news
Hadn't had the time to choose
    A way to lose
    But she believes

Going to see the river man
Going to tell him all I can
    About the plan
    For lilac time

If he tells me all he knows
About the way his river flows
    And all night shows
    In summertime

    Betty said she prayed today
For the sky to blow away
    Or maybe stay
    She wasn't sure

For when she thought of summer rain
    Calling for her mind again
    She lost the pain
    And stayed for more

Going to see the river man
Going to tell him all I can
    About the ban
    On feeling free

If he tells me all he knows
About the way his river flows
    I don't suppose
    It's meant for me

Oh, how they come and go
Oh, how they come and go

The Things We Do For Love
    Composer(s): Eric Stewart- Graham Gouldman
    First release by: 10cc - 1977

Too many broken hearts have fallen down the river
Too many lonely souls have drifted out to sea
You lay your bets and then you pay the price
The things we do for love
(the things we do for love)

Communication is the problem to the answer
You’ve got her number and your hand is on the phone
The weather’s turned and all the lines our down
The things we do for love
(the things we do for love)

Like walking in the rain and snow
    When there’s nowhere to go
And you’re feeling like a part of you is dying
And you’re looking for the answer in her eyes
You think you wanna break up
Then she says she wants to make up

Ooh, you make me love you
    Ooh, you’ve got a way
Ooh, you’ve had me crawling up the wall

Like walking in the rain and snow
    When there’s nowhere to go
And you’re feeling like a part of you is dying
And you’re looking for the answer in her eyes
You think you wanna break up
Then she says she wants to make up

Ooh, you make me love you
    Ooh, you’ve got a way
Ooh, you’ve had me crawling up the wall

A compromise would surely help the situation
Agree to disagree, but disagree to part
Well after all it’s just a compromise
For the things we do for love
(the things we do for love)
the things we do for love
(the things we do for love)
the things we do for love
(the things we do for love)...

    Come On In My Kitchen
Composer(s): Robert Johnson; Blind Willie Johnson; Payne
    Originally performed by: Robert Johnson

Mmm mmm mmm mmm mmm mmm mmm mmm mmm mmm
Mmm mmm mmm mmm mmm mmm mmm mmm mmm mmm

You better come on in my kitchen
It's goin' to be rainin' outdoors
When a woman gets in trouble, everybody throws her down
Lookin' for yo' good friend, none can be found
You better come on in my kitchen
It's goin' to be rainin' outdoors
Nnn, the woman I love, took from my best friend
Some joker got lucky, stole her back again
She better come on in my kitchen
Baby, it's goin' to be rainin' outdoors
Mama, can't you hear that wind howl?
Oh how the wind do howl!
You better come on in my kitchen
Mmm baby, it's goin' to be rainin' outdoors
Nnn, the woman that I love, I crave to see
She's up the country, won't write to me
Then, you better come on in my kitchen
    Goin' to be rainin' outdoors
I went to the mountain, far as my eyes could see
Some other man got my woman, lonesome blues got me
But she better come on in my kitchen
'Cause it's goin' to be rainin' outdoors
My mama dead, papa well's to be
Ain't got nobody to love and care for me
She better come on in my kitchen
'Cause it's goin' to be rainin' outdoors

    River Lady
    Composer(s): Greg Adams
    Performer(s): Roger Whittaker

The day the river freezes is the day it won't seem fair
'Cos they'll come to get the river lady
    And I don't think they'll care

I know they'll scrape her paint off
In their same old foolish ways

Now the people see the river
But the old ship's gone away
Water turns cold and gets to freezing
Before you even know it the old girl's easing
Away from her berth round by the point and out of our view
Off in the mist her engines pounding'
Back on the banks that old horn's sounding
    A little good-bye
a little I'll do what I must do
    A little good-bye
a little I'll do what I must do

I know I will remember when I cannot hear that horn
That would roll up by the mountains
As she took us through the storm
I know they've got to take her
    But I can't say I approve
'Cos she's won so many battles
That I hate to see her lose

Water turns cold and gets to freezing

The Things We Did Last Summer
Composer(s): Sammy Cahn - Jule Styne
First recording by: Frank Sinatra - 1946
    Covered by multiple other artists

The boat rides we would take, the moonlight on the lake
The way we danced and hummed our fav'rite song
The things we did last summer I'll remember all winter long

The midway and the fun, the kewpie dolls we won
The bell I rang to prove that I was strong
The things we did last summer I'll remember all winter long

The early morning hike, the rented tandem bike
The lunches that we used to pack
We never could explain that sudden summer rain
The looks we got when we got back

The leaves began to fade like promises we made
How could a love that seemed so right go wrong?
The things we did last summer I'll remember all winter long

I've tried so to forget, at times I do, and yet
The mem'ry of you lingers like our song
The things we did last summer, I'll remember all winter long

    Come On In
    Composer(s): Hayes; Porter
    Performer(s): Sam & Dave

It's getting outside; you better come on in, girl, yeah baby
I've got a call for you to ride; you better come on in, girl, mmm yeah
My love is a life saver; I'm tryin' to do both of us a favor
Just come on in, come on in, come on in, now look here

Now I've got you home; can I come on in, girl?
You don't have to sit home alone; can I come on in, girl?
Oh my love is a life saver; in my soul I know you are able
To know what I'm tryin' to say; show me the easy way
& I'll take care of your love; let me, let me
Let me come on in, come on in, come on in

I want you the whole summer
Ask a friend for your phone number
But I was too scared to phone
That's why I waited so very long, yeah

You put walls around your heart; let me come on in, girl
I love you from the start; can I come on in, girl?
Oh oh my love is a life saver; in my soul I know you are able
To know what I'm tryin' to say; show me the easy way
I wanna love you every day; let me come on
Come on in, come on in, let me come on in, come on in, oh
Let me come on in, let me, baby, come on in
I wanna come into your heart, just a lonely boy
    It's been a long time ...
