Veel sneeuw

Vandaag in Manchester is er veel sneeuw en ijs, en we meer verwachten. Tijdens de vorige dagen is de sneeuw in de oosten van de land gevallen, de volgende dagen in het westen. Manchester staat bijna in de midden, nabij de Pennines, dus we vaak allebei hebben. Deze foto is van de weg niet ver van ons huis.

Hi Alfy from ginseng

Thank you for your response to my blog. It's nice to know that someone has struggled through my attempts to write in Dutch! I would be happy to email you in English if it will help you. English people have a reputation for being bad at speaking other languages. I am sure this is because we do not see or hear them very much. For example we have very few programmes on TV from other countries apart from the USA, Australia, etc. which are all in English. In Belgium you have lots of English-speaking programmes on TV with Dutch subtitles, and on the radio lots of songs with English lyrics. In England we don't get any of this. You would think no other language existed. I often listen to Radio Vlaanderen on the computer so as to get used to the sound of Dutch being spoken. When I was at school I learned French. Some schools teach German as well but ours didn't - we had Latin instead. I went on to study English Literature and Latin at university so my education in modern languages stopped when I was 18, until now. English grammar is confusing at times. Many English people are not very good at it. If you have to explain the way in which your own language works, it can be very difficult because you just take it all for granted and are used to it. You can't understand what the other person finds so difficult about it. There are some things which I find very confusing about Dutch. I forget whether nouns are prefixed by de- or het- . In English we use only "the". Adjectives change their spelling all the time depending on various rules about de-nouns and het-nouns, etc. In Dutch there are many words such as "daarover" and "erop". In English there are very few of these and they are never split in half and put in sentences separately. I could go on but you are probably bored already. I got very interested in the history of Flanders after first coming to Bruges and started to learn Dutch partly so that I could read more about it. Information on this is very hard to find in English. (English history is also taught sometimes as if no other country existed. We are on a little island trying to fight off invaders, but we are not taught much about why they might want to invade us). Well, Alfy, thank you again for replying to my blog. Hallo Ginseng

Hier heeft het vannacht en heel de dag gesneeuwt, wat wij de laatste jaren amper zagen. Je schrijft dat Nederlands moeilijk is om te leren, maar Engels is dat voor ons ook niet zozeer om te spreken maar wel de gramatica. Ik ben uit Antwerpen "ook de moeite om te bezoeken" en 61jaar en volg nu 3 jaar Engels in de avondschool. Ik heb al enorm veel bijgeleerd, maar het blijft toch moeilijk. We kunnen elkaar wat aanvullen als je wil. Ik schrijf naar jou in het Nederlands en jij naar mij in 't Engels? Maar dan met mailtjes als je wil. Groetjes en nog een fijne avond Alfy
