Success don't come easy, so they say
    'Cause I got mine
I got it the hard way, the hard way

When I was five, I had to fight to keep alive
There was very little bread to eat
    Fifteen before I tasted meat

Teacher said that I had inhibitions
I was just another case of malnutrition
The hard way, ain't that the hard way

She let me live in the spire room
    'Cause when it rained
    The rain came through, through

A song in my heart, a hole in my britches
I struck out to find my riches
Didn't have no peace to scatter my loot
Ain't no bucks in a birthday suit
The hard way, ain't that the hard way

Take your courage in your hands
    Stick to things you understand
    That's the way that next
You will make success out of mess

    Now I drive a limousine
My shoes are keen, my suit's always clean
    The hard way
I made it the hard way
I made it the hard way
I made it the hard way
I made it the hard way
    I made it...

    C'est Mon Espoir Composer(s): Étienne Roda-Gil - Julien Clerc Performer(s): Julien Clerc

    Aucune passion ne me guette

    Aucune passion ne me guette

    Fragile Child
    Composer(s): John Fogerty; Tom Fogerty
Performer(s): Creedence Clearwater Revival; The Golliwogs

I knew a pretty little girl
    with no love to give
    I wouldn't do that, I wouldn't do that
    So I followed her home
just to see where she lives
    I wouldn't do that, I wouldn't do that
    I walked right up
and I knocked on her door
    I wouldn't do that, I wouldn't do that
So I asked her for a date
could I see you some more
    I wouldn't do that, I wouldn't do that

    [Chorus:]
    'Cause she's a fragile child
    Yeah she's a fragile child
    Oh she's a fragile child
    Better leave her alone

I took her out on the town
Just to have a little fun
    I wouldn't do that, I wouldn't do that
    But it wasn't very long
I found that she's the same one
    I wouldn't do that, I wouldn't do that
I thought I'd push my luck
    And I held her hand
    I wouldn't do that, I wouldn't do that
She told me ever so polite
Go and see her old man
    I wouldn't do that, I wouldn't do that

    [Chorus x2]

    The Hard Way
    Composer(s): Frankie Laine - L.G. Sullivan
    Performer(s): Frankie Laine

(The hard way, the hard way)

The hard way to get here, the hard way to stay
The hard way to work and the hard way to play
The hard way, the long way, the rough way, the slow
The hard way to get here and the old hard way to go

They tell me that I first saw light in 1844
In a wagon in the hills of Tennessee
And my mother soon lay dead with an arrow through her head
So it started out the old hard way for me

The hard way to get here, the hard way to stay
The hard way to work and the hard way to play
The hard way, the long way, the rough way, the slow
The old hard way to get here and the old hard way to go

I hunted possum and raccoon to get my share of grub
I fought the bear to rob the honey bee
When I was only five, that is how I stayed alive
Everything's been the old hard way for me

I never settled anywhere, ain't never earned no pay
A bottle's words is steady company
I never learned to ride, all I learned to do was fight
Everything has been the old hard way for me

The hard way to get here, the hard way to stay
The hard way to work and the hard way to play
The hard way, the long way, the rough way, the slow
The hard way to get here and the old hard way to go

That bugle started blowin' back in 1861
I pulled up stakes and volunteered with Lee
I marched with old Stonewall, till I met a cannon ball
Everything's been the old hard way for me

The hard way to get here, the hard way to stay
The hard way to work and the hard way to play
The hard way, the long way, the rough way, the slow
The hard way to get here and the old hard way to go

So all good folk who come this way and then look upon this stone
Please say a prayer and set my spirit free
Won't you help me reach my goal 'cause I'm down here shovelin' coal
Everything is still the old hard way for me

Everything is still the old hard way for me

Everything is still the old hard way for me

C'est Moi Qui Suis Colargol Composer(s): Victor Villien - Mireille Hartuch Performer(s): Mireille

    C'est moi qui suis Colargol
L'ours qui chante en fa en sol
En do dièse et mi bémol
    En gilet et en faux-col
    Le roi des oiseaux
    Vous le savez mes amis
    M'a donné un beau
    Sifflet pour faire cui-cui
Cui cui cui cui cui cui cui!
    C'est moi qui suis Colargol
L'ours qui chante en fa en sol
En do dièse et mi bémol
    C'est moi qui suis Colargol

    C'est moi qui suis Colargol
    Je chante sans protocole
    Mieux que Jacques
    Pierre ou Paul
    En russe ou en espagnol
    Le roi des oiseaux
    Est un merveilleux ami
    Grâce à son cadeau
    Vous m'entendez aujourd'hui
    C'est moi qui suis Colargol
    Mauvais élève à l'école
    Mais premier au music-hall
    C'est moi qui suis Colargol

    Fragezeichen Mag Ich Nicht
    Composer(s): H. Blum; H. Bredow
    Performer(s): Agnetha Fältskog

    Fragezeichen mag ich nicht
    Wenn es um Liebe geht
    Sag mir lieber ins Gesicht
    Wie es um uns steht

    Fragezeichen tun nicht gut
    Sag' es klipp und klar
Nimm dein Herz und habe Mut
    Sonst gibt es Gefahr

Im selben Boot, da sitzen wir
Und segeln heiter durch die Welt
Den selben Wein, den trinken wir
Und teilen uns das letzte Geld

    Warum sagt jeder Mann
    Immer dann wenn er kann
    Worte ohne Sinn?
    Sag wofür das ist

    Fragezeichen mag ich nicht
    Wenn es um Liebe geht
    Sag mir lieber ins Gesicht
    Wie es um uns steht

    Fragezeichen tun nicht gut
    Sag' es klipp und klar
Nimm dein Herz und habe Mut
    Sonst gibt es Gefahr

The Soldier's Almanac Bible And Prayer Book ((aka Deck Of Cards (Phil Harris) - 1948
The Red Deck Of Cards (Red River Dave McEnery) - 1954; A Hillbilly's Deck Of Cards (Ferlin Husky) - 1966; Cards Spiritualised))
((Dutch Version: Het Spel Kaarten (Cowboy Gerard & De Rodeo Riders - 1965))
    Composer(s): T. Texas Tyler

Richard Middleton, a soldier, attending divine service with the rest of the regiment at a church in Glasgow
instead of pulling out a Bible, like his brother soldiers, to find the parson's text
spread a pack of cards before him
This singular behaviour did not long pass unnoticed
both by the clergyman and the sarjeant of the company to which he belonged
The latter in particular requested him to put up the cards, and on his refusal
conducted him after church before the Mayor
to whom he preferred a formal complaint of Richard's indecent behaviour during divine service
"Well soldier!" said the Mayor, "what excuse have you for this strange scandalous behaviour?"
If you can make any apology, or assign any reason for it, it's well
If you cannot, assure yourself that I will cause you, without delay, to be severely punished for it"
"Since your honour is so good," replied Richard, "I will inform you
I have been eight days on march, with a bare allowance of sixpence a day
which your honour will allow is hardly sufficient to maintain a man in meat, drink, washing
and other necessaries that consequently he may want, without a Bible, Prayer Book, or any other good book"
On saying this, Richard drew out his pack of cards, and presenting one of the aces to the Mayor
continued his address to the magistrate as follows

"When I see an Ace, may it please your honour, it reminds me that there is only one God
And when I look upon a Two or a Three, the former puts me in mind of the Father and Son
and the latter of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost
A Four calls for remembrance the Four Evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John
A Five, the five wise Virgins who were ordered to trim their lamps
There were ten, indeed, but five, your worship may remember, were wise, and five were foolish
A Six, that in six days God created heaven and earth
A Seven, that on the seventh day he rested from all that he had made
An Eight, of the eight righteous persons preserved from the deluge
viz., Noah, and his wife, with his three sons and their wives
A Nine, of the Nine lepers cleansed by our Saviour
There were ten, but only one returned to offer his tribute of thanks
And a Ten, of the ten commandments that God gave Moses, on Mount Sinai, on the two tablets of stone"
He took the Knave and put it aside
"When I see the Queen, it puts me in mind of the Queen of Sheba
who came from the furthermost parts of the world to hear the wisdom of Solomon
For she was as wise a woman as he a man, for she brought fifty boys and fifty girls
all clothed in girls' apparel to shew before King Solomon, for him to test which were boys and which were girls
But he could not until he called for water to wash themselves
The girls washed up to their elbows, and the boys only up to the wrists of their hands, so King Solomon told by that
And when I see the King, it puts me in mind of the great King of Heaven and Earth, which is God Almighty
And likewise his Majesty King George the Fourth, to pray for him"
"Well," said the Mayor, "you have given a good description of all the cards except one, which is lacking"
"Which is that?" said the soldier
    "The Knave," said the Mayor
"If your honour will not be angry with me," returned Richard, "I can give you the same satisfaction on that as any in the pack?"
    "No," said the Mayor
"Well," returned the soldier, "the greatest knave that I know is the sarjeant who brought me before you"
"I don't know," replied the Mayor, "whether he be the greatest knave or no; but I am sure that he is the greatest fool"

The soldier then continued as follows
"When I count the number of dots in a pack of cards, there are 365, so many days as there are in a year
When I count how many cards are in a pack, I find there are 52, so many weeks are there in a year
When I reckon how many tricks are won by a pack, I find there are 13, so many months are there in a year
So that this pack of cards is both Bible, Almanac, and Prayer Book to me"

The Mayor called his servants, ordered them to entertain the soldier well, gave him a piece of money
and said he was the cleverest fellow he ever heard in his life

    C'est Moi Qui Pars
    Composer(s): A.M. Gaspard - Claude Barzotti
    Performer(s): Claude Barzotti

On dirait que tu as changé

The Red Deck Of Cards ((aka Deck Of Cards (Phil Harris) - 1948; A Hillbilly's Deck Of Cards (Ferlin Husky) - 1966
Cards Spiritualised; The Soldier's Almanac Bible And Prayer Book))
((Dutch Version: Het Spel Kaarten (Cowboy Gerard & De Rodeo Riders - 1965))
    Composer(s): T. Texas Tyler - Dave McEnery
    Performer(s): Red River Dave McEnery - 1954

It was during the last days of the prisoner exchange in Korea
I was there as they came through Freedom Gate
    Shattered, sick and lame

There in a red cross tent as the weary group rested, a soldier broke out a deck of cards
A look of hate crossed the tired face of one boy as he sprang up - knocking the cards to the ground
As the cards lay around, many of them face up, he picked up the Ace and began

"Fellows," he said, "I'm sorry, but I hate cards
The commies tried to use them to teach us their false doctrine

They told us the "Ace", meant that there's one God, the state
We knew that to be untrue for we were religious boys"

"And the "Deuce" meant there were two great leaders
    Only two
    Lenin and Stalin
And we couldn't swallow that either"

"And this "Trey" stood for three religious superstitions that the Reds would soon destroy
The Catholic, the Protestants and the Jewish"

This black "Four", the soldier boy continued, stood for the four corners of the earth
where the Hammer and Sickle would soon rein supreme
There in that prison camp, far away from home, we hoped it was a lie

And this red "Five", was the five points in their Red Star
Tears were streaming down the boy's face, as he picked up the six

And this "Six", the commies told us, stood for the sixth and final wars that America had luckily won
The Revolutionary war, the war of 1812, the Civil War, the Spanish American war, WW1, and number six - WW2
Now in this war, this cold war, America would be destroyed

And the "Seven", stood for our seventh foolish day, Sunday, which we wasted on our Lord

The "Eight", stood for the 8 hours every day we would have to spend learning to be, uh, progressive

The "Nine", for the cat-of-nine tails, lashed across our backs if we ever knelt to pray

The "Ten", was reminded us that out ten commandments, were ten stupid rules that only Capitalistic fools believed in
    That's what they told us

The "Jack" meant that Christ was a knave of uncertain birth

The "Queen", that maybe his mother was a non-virtuous woman

And the "King", stood for our Lord God whom the commies told us didn't not exist
    A dream, a fake, a joke
    That's what they told us

The Heart stood for Christ's blood, all shed in vain

The Diamond signified the real precious jewel, the communist party

The Club - the weapon of oppression with which they beat us

And the Spade - a tool with which we would dig our own graves

This was the Red Deck of Cards

So you see fellows, the soldier boy said, that's why I hate cards
His buddies picked up the cards tore them into pieces and with shining faces
walked arm-in-arm toward a simple chapel in Korea

    Tu as raison

    Oh mon amour
    Oui c'est mieux comme ça

    The Happy Song (Dum-Dum)
((French Version: Dum Dum Dum (Michel Pagliaro) - 1968))
Composer(s): Steve Cropper - Otis Redding
First release by: Otis Redding - 1968

    Gonna sing this song y'all
    Singin' it for my baby
She's the only one can bring me joy
That's why I sing these happy songs
They go dum, dum, deedle dee, dum dum
dum, dum, deedle dee, dum dum
dum, dum, deedle dee, dum dum
Come on now happy song, happy song now

On a cold, rainy, windy night
    She shut all the doors
    She cut off the lights
She holds me and squeezes me tight
She tells me Big O everything's all right
And I go dum, dum, deedle dee, dum dum
Play it again dum, dum, deedle dee, dum dum
Come on now those happy songs, happy, happy songs

    Come on now
Bring my breakfast to the table
When I go to work she knows I'm able
Do my job, I come back in
You oughta see my baby's face

    She just grins, grins, grins
I go dum, dum, deedle dee, dum dum
Play it again dum, dum, deedle dee, dum dum
    sing them happy songs
    Lovely, lovely songs
    Sweet soul songs
    Those good old happy songs
    Give you such a feeling
    A lovely, lovely, feeling
    Makes you wanna shout
It knocks you, knocks you out
    Happy, happy songs
    Those good old lovely songs
    Those sweet soul music songs

I don't wanna know your name
Cause you don't look the same
    The way you did before
OK you think you got a pretty face
But the rest of you is out of place
    You looked all right before

    Fox on the run
You screamed and everybody comes a-running
Take a run and hide yourself away
    Fox on the run
F-foxy, foxy on the run and hideaway

You-you talk about just every band
But the names you drop are second hand
    I've heard it all before
I don't wanna know your name
Cause you don't look the same
    The way you did before
    (repeat chorus)

    Notre vie change
    Car on subit sa loi
    Qu'est un mélange
    De tourments et de joies
    Vraiment étrange
    C'est merveilleux l'amour

    C'est merveilleux l'amour
    Qu'on se le dise
    Ces instants qu'on savoure
    Et qui nous grisent
    Dont dépendent nos jours
    Nous électrisent
    C'est merveilleux l'amour

    Ça vient sans s'annoncer
    Sans crier gare
    Un regard, un baiser
    Hop! ça démarre
    Le bonheur est lâché
    Dans la bagarre
    C'est merveilleux l'amour

    Ça vit
    De rêves et d'ennuis
    Qui passent
    C'est fier
    Ça fait un bruit d'enfer
    Ça casse
    Et quoi que l'on pense
    Et quoi que l'on fasse

    Quand dans son tourbillon
    Il nous entraîne
    Ça prend des proportions
    Surhumaines
Et qu'on le veuille ou non
    C'est une chaîne
Qui nous tient nuit et jour
    C'est merveilleux, merveilleux l'amour

She walked through the corn leading down to the river
Her hair shone like gold in the hot morning sun
She took all the love that a poor boy could give her
And left me to die like the fox on the run

Like the fox (like the fox, like the fox) on the run

Everybody knows the reason for the fall
When woman tempted man down in paradise's hall
This woman tempted me all right, then took me for a ride
But like the lonely fox I need a place to hide

Like the fox (like the fox, like the fox) on the run

Come take a glass of wine and fortify your soul
We'll talk about the world and friends we used to know
I'll illustrate, a girl put me on the floor
The game is nearly up, the hounds are at my door

Like the fox (like the fox, like the fox) on the run

    The Happy Girls
Composer(s): Helen Reddy - Kim Fowley
    Performer(s): Helen Reddy

Sally met him in the War
    Back in nineteen-forty-four
He took her home to the States
His buddies thought that she was great
    Subway Sally's fifty-one
Her man is gone, her dreams are done
She rides by night the Brooklyn train
Sleeps by day to hide the pain

    Lonely women of the World
Were the happy girls (The happy girls)
    Lonely heroes of the World
Seek the happy girls (The happy girls)

Nancy saw him on the street
His shoes were shined, his suit was neat
She couldn't see his broken mind
Behind the mask of bein' kind
He sleeps inside the iron bars
Nancy's smile can't hide the scars
Her daughter's grown, there's no one home
She cries all night, she's all alone

    Lonely women of the World
Were the happy girls (The happy girls)
    Lonely heroes of the World
Seek the happy girls (The happy girls)

To tell the truth there's no end in sight
Mister Lonely always calls at night
Let's hold on tight until the mornin' light
    (Till the mornin' light)

    Terry's gonna meet him soon
    Today at school, maybe noon
I hope for her it turns out right
    I know she's got a date tonight
Had my ups, had my downs
Truth was lost, but truth was found
This I've learned, the World still turns
We all get bruised, we all get burned

    Lonely women of the World
Were the happy girls (The happy girls)
    Lonely heroes of the World
Seek the happy girls (The happy girls)

Happy girls, happy girls, happy girls
    (Happy, aaaahh-aaahh, happy)
    (Happy girls, happy...)
