    Ladies Of The Road
Composer(s): Peter Sinfield - Robert Fripp
    Performer(s): King Crimson

    A flower lady's daughter
    As sweet as holy water
    Said: "I'm the school reporter
Please teach me", well I taught her

    Two fingered levi'd sister
Said, "Peace", I stopped I kissed her
    Said, "I'm a male resister"
I smiled and just unzipped her

    High diving chinese trender
    Black hair and black suspender
    Said, "Please me no surrender
Just love to feel your Fender"

All of you know that the girls of the road
Are like apples you stole in your youth
All of you know that the girls of the road
Been around but are versed in the truth

    Stone-headed Frisco spacer
Ate all the meat I gave her
Said would I like to taste hers
    And even craved the flavour

    "Like marron-glaced fish bones
    Oh lady hit the road!"

All of you know that the girls of the road
Are like apples you stole in your youth
All of you know that the girls of the road
Been around but are versed in the truth

Ballade À Temps Perdu Composer(s): Boris Bergman - Armand Canfora - Michel Jourdan Performer(s): Dalida

    Quelqu'un peut-il me dire
    Si un cœur mal aimé
    Voit un jour ses blessures
    Se fermer à jamais

    Est-ce qu'un jour l'espoir
    Nous revient tôt ou tard
    Quand on est seul perdu
    Dans un monde inconnu

    L'amour ne sourit jamais plus
Dans ma ballade à temps perd

    Quelqu'un peut-il compter
    Les pleurs de la rosée
    Avant que le soleil
    Ne vienne tout sécher

    Les pleurs de la rosée
    Ne s'attardent jamais
    Tout pareil au bonheur
    Qui vivait dans mon cœur

    L'amour ne sourit jamais plus
Dans ma ballade à temps perdu

    On ne saura jamais
    Si un cœur mal aimé
    Voit un jour ses blessures
    Se fermer à jamais

Mais je sais que je t'aime
Toi qui n'a pas de nom
    Toi qui force ma peine
    A faire une chanson

Mon cœur ne battait presque plus
Dans ma ballade à temps perdu
    Mais j'aime un amour inconnu
Dans ma ballade à cœur perdu

    Ladies Of The Chorus
    Composer(s): Irving Berlin
    Performer(s): Alan Hale

    Ladies of the chorus
That's what we are, it appears
We were inducted and we took a vow
We joined the Army, but look at us now
    We're ladies of the chorus
Don't we look lovely, my dears
    In corsets and dresses
    And cute golden tresses
To hide the dirt behind our ears

    I was a plumber
    I quit work last summer
My number come up at the start

    I was a printer
    I quit work last winter
They okayed my lungs and my heart

    I was a farmer
    Potato embalmer
They took me away from the plow

    I was a packer
    I chewed plug 'terbaccer'
I wish I had some of it now

Oh, now we're in the chorus
Dressed up in girdles that squeeze
    We're here to romance with
To sing and to dance with
A bunch of nerdy guys like these

Guys: Pardon me, but aren't you the country maiden?
Gals: Pardon me, but aren't you the city chap?

    Guys:
    Cuddle closer, won't you please
I'm about to take a squeeze

Gals: If you do then I will give your face a slap

    Guys:
I would love to take you home to meet my mother
I would like to meet my mother, but I can't
She will treat you like a queen

    Gals: But I'm Only Seventeen
Guys: If you are seventeen, then so's my aunt

Gals: Hi-ho! I want you to behave
Guys: Hi-ho! I think you need a shave

Gals: Do you think that you can get me into pictures?
Guys: If you're nice to me I'll get you on the screen
Gals: How about a movie test?
Guys: Not with hair upon your chest
Gals: And now it's time to dance but keep it clean

Ballade À La Lune Composer(s): Georges Brassens Performer(s): Georges Brassens

    C'était, dans la nuit brune
    Sur un clocher jauni
    La lune
Comme un point sur un "i"

    Lune, quel esprit sombre
    Promène au bout d'un fil
    Dans l'ombre
    Ta face et ton profil?

    Es-tu l'œil du ciel borgne?
    Quel chérubin cafard
    Nous lorgne
    Sous ton masque blafard?

Est-ce un ver qui te ronge
    Quand ton disque noirci
    S'allonge
    En croissant rétréci?

    Es-tu, je t'en soupçonne
    Le vieux cadran de fer
    Qui sonne
    L'heure aux damnés d'enfer?

    Sur ton front qui voyage
    Ce soir ont-ils compté
    Quel âge
    À leur éternité?

    Qui t'avait éborgnée
    L'autre nuit? T'étais-tu
    Cognée
    Contre un arbre pointu?

Car tu vins, pâle et morne
    Coller sur mes carreaux
    Ta corne
    À travers les barreaux

    Lune, en notre mémoire
    De tes belles amours
    L'histoire
    T'embellira toujours

    Et toujours rajeunie
    Tu seras du passant
    Bénie
    Pleine lune ou croissant

Et qu'il vente ou qu'il neige
    Moi-même, chaque soir
    Que fais-je
    Venant ici m'asseoir?

Je viens voir à la brune
    Sur le clocher jauni
    La lune
Comme un point sur un "i"

Je viens voir à la brune
    Sur le clocher jauni
    La lune
Comme un point sur un "i"

    Ladies Of The Canyon
    Composer(s): Joni Mitchell
First release by: Joni Mitchell - 1970
    Covered by multiple other artists

    Trina wears her wampum beads
She fills her drawing book with line
    Sewing lace on widows' weeds
And filigree on leaf and vine
    Vine and leaf are filigree
And her coat's a secondhand one
    Trimmed with antique luxury
She is a lady of the canyon

Annie sits you down to eat
She always makes you welcome in
Cats and babies 'round her feet
And all are fat and none are thin
None are thin and all are fat
She may bake some brownies today
    Saying, you are welcome back
    She is another canyon lady

    Estrella circus girl
Comes wrapped in songs and gypsy shawls
    Songs like tiny hammers hurled
At beveled mirrors in empty halls
    Empty halls and beveled mirrors
    Sailing seas and climbing banyans
Come out for a visit here
To be a lady of the canyon

Trina takes her paints and her threads
And she weaves a pattern all her own
Annie bakes her cakes and her breads
And she gathers flowers for her home
For her home she gathers flowers
    And Estrella, dear companion
    Colors up the sunshine hours
    Pouring music down the canyon
    Coloring the sunshine hours
They are the ladies of the canyon

    Ballad Om Censuren
    Composer(s): Cornelis Vreeswijk
    Performer(s): Cornelis Vreeswijk

    La-Di-Da-Di
((Adapted from: Sukiyaki (by Kyu Sakamoto) - 1961))
Composer(s): Hachidai Nakamura - Rokusuke Ei - Doug E. Fresh - Slick Rick
    Performer(s): Doug E. Fresh & M.C. Ricky D - 1985

    Titles In Other Languages:
1963 - Sukiyaki (by Otto Brandenburg)
1980 - Sukiyaki (by A Taste Of Honey)
1993 - Lodi Dodi (by Snoop Doggy Dogg)

    Slick Rick:
OK, party people in the house
You're about to witness something you've never witnessed before
Yes, it's the original human beat box, Doug E. Fresh
And his partner, the grand wizard, MC Ricky D, D
And that's me in the place to be
And we gonna show you how we do it for '85, kickin' live, alright
Because, um, I've got a funny feeling, um
you're all sick of all these crap rappers
Bitin' their rhymes because um they're back-stabbers
But when it comes to me and my friend Doug Fresh here
There is no competition 'cause we are the best, yeah
But let's impress which we prove
And ya all will realize that we are the move
So listen close so you all don't miss
As we go a little somethin' like this
    Hit it

    Ah yeah
    You know what

    La-Di-Da-Di
    La-Di-Da-Di
    La-Di
    La-Di

You know what, yo peep this
    La-Di-Da-Di, we likes to party
We don't cause trouble, we don't bother nobody, we're
Just some men thats on the mic
And when we rock up on the mic we rock the mic right
For all of y'all keepin y'all in health
Just to see ya smile and enjoy yourself
'Cause it's cool when ya cause a cozy conditioning
That we create, 'cause that's our mission
So listen to what we say
Because this type of shit, it happens everyday
I woke up around ten o' clock in the mornin'
I gave myself a stretch up, a mornin' yawnin'
Went to the bathroom to wash up
Had some soap on my face and my hand up on a cup
I said, um, mirror mirror on the wall
Who is the top choice of them all
There was a rubble dubble, five minutes it lasted
The mirror said you are you conceited bastard

Well that's true, thats why we never have no beef
So then I washed off the soap and brushed the gold teeth
Used Oil Of Olay 'cause my skin gets pale
And then I got the files for my fingernails
Chewed through the night and on my behalf
I put the bubbles in the tub so I could have a bubble bath
Clean, dry was my body and hair
I threw on my brand new Gucci underwear
For all the girls I might take home
I got the Johnson's Baby Powder and the Polo cologne
Fresh dressed like a million bucks
Threw on the bally shoes and the fly green socks
Stepped out my house stopped short, oh no
I went back in, I forgot my kangol
    And then I dilly (dallied)
    I ran though a (alley)
I bumped into my homegirl (Sally)
    From the (valley)
This is the girl plays hard to get so I said
Whats wrong 'cause she looked upset, she said
It's all because of you I'm feelin' sad and blue
You went away and now my life is filled with rainy days
I love you so, how much you'll never know
'Cause you took your love away from me
Now what was I to do, she's cryin' over me
    And she was feelin' blue
I said, um, don't cry, dry your eye
Here comes your mother with those two little guys
Her mean mother stepped up, said to me hi
Looked Sally in the face and decked her in the eye
Punched her in the belly and stepped on her feet
Slammed the child on the hard concrete
The bitch was strong, the kids was gone
Something was wrong, I said what is goin' on
I tried to break it up, I said stop it, leave her
She said, if I can't have you, she can't either
She grabbed me closely by my socks
So I broke the hell out like I had the chicken pox, but
She gave chase; she caught up quick
She put a finger in the face of MC Rick
She said why don't you give me a play
So we can go cruisin' in my oj
And if you give me that OK
I'll give you all my love today
Ricky, Ricky, Ricky, can't you see
Somehow your words just hypnotize me
And I just love your jazzy ways, oh
MC Rick my love is here to stay
And on and on and on she kept on
The bitch been around before my mother's born
I said cheer up, I gave her a kiss
I said you can't have me, I'm too young for you miss
She says no you're not, then she starts cryin'
I says I'm nineteen, she said stop lyin'
I says I am, go ask my mother
And with your wrinkled pussy, I can't be your lover
To the tick tock ya don't stop
To the tick tick ya don't quit, hit it ...

Ballad Of Thunder Road Composer(s): Robert Mitchum - Don Raye First release by: Robert Mitchum - 1958 Covered by multiple other artists

Let me tell the story, I can tell it all About the mountain boy who ran illegal alcohol His daddy made the whiskey, son, he drove the load When his engine roared, they called the highway Thunder Road Sometimes into Ashville, sometimes Memphis town The revenoors chased him but they couldn’t run him down Each time they thought they had him, his engine would explode He'd go by like they were standin’ still on Thunder Road And there was thunder, thunder over Thunder Road Thunder was his engine, and white lightning was his load There was moonshine, moonshine to quench the Devil’s thirst The law they swore they'd get him, but the Devil got him first On the first of April, nineteen fifty-four A Federal man sent word he’d better make his run no more He said two hundred agents were coverin’ the state Whichever road he tried to take, they’d get him sure as fate Son, his Daddy told him, make this run your last The tank is filled with hundred-proof, you’re all tuned up and gassed Now, don’t take any chances, if you can’t get through I’d rather have you back again than all that mountain dew And there was thunder, thunder over Thunder Road Thunder was his engine, and white lightning was his load There was moonshine, moonshine to quench the Devil’s thirst The law they swore they'd get him, but the Devil got him first Roarin’ out of Harlan, revvin’ up his mill He shot the gap at Cumberland, and screamed by Maynordsville With T-men on his taillights, roadblocks up ahead The mountain boy took roads that even Angels feared to tred Blazing right through Knoxville, out on Kingston Pike Then right outside of Bearden, they made the fatal strike He left the road at 90; that’s all there is to say The devil got the moonshine and the mountain boy that day

Ballad Of The War Wagon Composer(s): Dimitri Tiomkin - Ned Washington Performer(s): Ed Ames

Look at those horses! What are they draggin'?
Look at those horses! What are they draggin'
Heavily guarded, what is that wagon?

Most men are fightin' for a wagon full of gold
Scratchin' and fightin' for a wagon full of gold
My piece of land, my cattle brand
A place to rest my head
A feelin' of a woman's love are all you really need for livin'

Look at those horses! What are they draggin'?

Three years in prison made me dream a lot of dreams
Sometimes the dream is not as easy as it seems
But wrong or right I have to fight
'Cause when the truth is told
All men are fightin' for a wagon full of gold

Look at those horses! What are they draggin'
Heavily guarded, what is that wagon?

Look at those horses! What are they draggin'
Heavily guarded, what is that wagon?

Most men are fightin' for a wagon full of gold
Scratchin' and fightin' for a wagon full of gold
My piece of land, my cattle brand

Sometimes the dream is not as easy as it seems
But wrong or right I have to fight
'Cause when the truth is told
All men are fightin' for a
    Strugglin' for a
    Searchin' for a
    Strivin' for a
    Wagon full of gold!
    Full of gold!

    Tu ris tu pleures
    mais tu as peur
    tout brûle en toi
    mais tu as froid
    tu ne dis rien
    mais tu as faim
    ton rire est faux
    comme un sanglot
    mauvais acteur
    sans spectateur
    tu fais le beau
    sans un bravo
    tu joues la vie
    en tragédie
    mais on se lasse
    de tes grimaces

    comme un pantin
    tu tournes en vain
    tu cherches encore
    de quoi briller
dans le décor de tes regrets

    que cherches-tu
    pauvre ingénu
    n'entends-tu pas
    qu'on rit de toi
    tu parles haut
    mais à quoi bon
    c'est ton écho
    qui te répond
    comme un pantin
    tu tournes en vain
    sous la couronne
    des illusions
    tu n'es qu'un homme
    à l'abandon

    rideaux tirés
    masque jeté
    la salle est vide
    ton cœur se ride
    pourquoi tricher
    pourquoi mentir
    pourquoi chercher
    à t'éblouir
    mauvais acteur
    sans spectateur
    on y a cru
    on n'y croit plus
    tu parles fort
    mais à quoi bon
    voici la mort
    qui te répond
    qui te répond
qui te répond qui te répond

    Ballad Of The Illinois Opry
    Composer(s): Kevin Cronin
    Performer(s): REO Speedwagon

Found myself heading down toward Springfield
The last sign said it was twelve miles west
It's gettin' hard to see through the salt on my windshield
But it looks like I'm gonna make it before the sun sets

The morning I arrived was Lincoln's birthday
So I walked through his house and saw his tomb
I decided that a tour through the Civil War Memorial Museum would be a drag
I was tired of seeing monuments about other men's doom

Now I don't want you people to think that all there is around Springfield Illinois
Are landmarks telling `bout the good old Lincoln years
Cus just north of town I saw a sign that said the Illinois Opry is open tonight
And the sweet sound of country music filled my ears

And I want to be a star in the Illinois Opry now
The people in the country certainly know how to play
It may be a while before I'm ready
But I'm gonna be up on that stage someday

I could easily write a whole song about the licks that guitar man was pickin'
I could go on for hours `bout the old boy on pedal steel
But I'm not singing `bout people who were just playin' music
I'm singing about how fine their music made me feel

There's a lot of people who have taken years of lessons
Trying to learn how to make their music fit the trend
But the simple folks at the Opry have got somethin' special
And I think that we all could use a lesson or two from them

And I want to be a star in the Illinois Opry now
The people in the country certainly know how to play
It maybe a while before I'm ready
But I'm gonna be up on that stage someday

    Composer(s): Pallavincini - Pachelbel - E. Papathanassieu - Boris Bergman
    Performer(s): Dalida

    Piangi e tu, dici che
    Non é, non è
    Che pioggia su di te
Io lo so, so come sei
E mai, e mai io crederti potrò

    Già troppe volte ormai
    Han pianto gli occhi tuoi

    Piangi e tu, dici che
    Non è, non è
    Che pioggia su di te

    Già troppe volte ormai
    Han pianto gli occhi tuoi

    Piangi e tu dici che
    Non è non è
    Che pioggia su di te
Piangi e tu non lo sai
    Che ma che mai
    Lasciarti io potrei
    Piova o no, se vorrai
    Negli occhi tuoi
    Il sole porterò

Ballad Of The Green Berets Composer(s): Barry Sadler - Robert Moore Performer(s): Barry Sadler and multiple other artists

Fighting soldiers from the sky Fearless men who jump and die Men who mean just what they say The brave men of the Green Beret Silver wings upon their chest These are men, America's best One hundred men will test today But only three win the Green Beret Trained to live off nature's land Trained in combat, hand-to-hand Men who fight by night and day Courage peak from the Green Berets Silver wings upon their chest These are men, America's best One hundred men will test today But only three win the Green Beret Back at home a young wife waits Her Green Beret has met his fate He has died for those oppressed Leaving her his last request "Put silver wings on my son's chest Make him one of America's best He'll be a man they'll test one day Have him win the Green Beret"

    Lace Covered Window
Performer(s): The Tidbits; The Small Faces

When you walk through the world all alone
And your dreams went to ashes behind you
Then the tears in your eyes will remind you
Of a view through a lace covered window

    Nothing seems very clear anymore
In your world everything is uncertain
How you wish you could pull back the curtain
Just to see through that lace covered window
See the world through that lace covered window

(But you'll never know just what life has in store)
(What's waiting there to greet you)
(So pull back the curtain and maybe once more)
(True love is there to meet you)

So you'll walk side by side through the world
No more times full of darkness and sorrow
Every day is a bright new tomorrow
When you go through that lace covered window

Every day is a bright new tomorrow
When you go through that lace covered window
Let the sun through that lace covered window

Ballad Of The Chrome Nun Composer(s): David Freiberg - Grace Slick Performer(s): Paul Kantner & Grace Slick

Look in the mirror you're lookin' guilty
Did the devil just give you the nod
You may be thinking you're funny lookin'
Well you're right that's right you're plenty odd
But think about it think about it
    If you were funny enough
    You could play great god

And I would fall down on my knees to you
Fall down flat on my face
I don't have to ask you where you're going
I just sit here laughing & I watch the race

    Nobody needs to baptize me
Anytime I laugh I got religion
Cross my forehead cross my knees
I'll take any good sign I'm a clay pigeon
    Nobody needs to baptize me
Anytime I laugh I got religion
And I fall down on my knees to you
I fall down flat on my face

    L'accordéoniste
    Composer(s): Michel Emer
First release by: Edith Piaf - 1942
    Covered by multiple other artists

Ballad Of The Alamo Composer(s): Dimitri Tiomkin - Paul Francis Webster Performer(s): Marty Robbins and multiple other artists

In the southern part of Texas, in the town of San Antone
There's a fortress all in ruin that the weeds have overgrown
You may look in vain for crosses and you'll never see a one
But sometime between the setting and the rising of the sun
You can hear a ghostly bugle as the men go marching by
You can hear them as they answer to that roll call in the sky
Colonel Travis, Davy Crockett and a hundred eighty more
Captain Dickenson, Jim Bowie, present and accounted for

Back in 1836, Houston said to Travis
"Get some volunteers and go fortify the Alamo"
Well, the men came from Texas and from old Tennessee
And they joined up with Travis just to fight for the right to be free

Indian scouts with squirrel guns, men with muzzle loaders
Stood together heel and toe to defend the Alamo
"You may never see your loved ones," Travis told them that day
"Those that want to can leave now, those who'll fight to the death, let 'em stay"

In the sand he drew a line with his army sabre
Out of a hundred eighty five, not a soldier crossed the line
With his banners a-dancin' in the dawn's golden light
Santa Anna came prancin' on a horse that was black as the night

He sent an officer to tell Travis to surrender
Travis answered with a shell and a rousin' rebel yell
Santa Anna turned scarlet: "Play Degüello," he roared
"I will show them no quarter, everyone will be put to the sword"

One hundred and eighty five holdin' back five thousand
Five days, six days, eight days, ten; Travis held and held again
Then he sent for replacements for his wounded and lame
But the troops that were comin' never came, never came, never came

Twice he charged, then blew recall
    On the fatal third time
Santa Anna breached the wall and he killed them one and all
Now the bugles are silent and there's rust on each sword
And the small band of soldiers lie asleep in the arms of The Lord

In the southern part of Texas, near the town of San Antone
Like a statue on his Pinto rides a cowboy all alone
And he sees the cattle grazin' where a century before
Santa Anna's guns were blazin' and the cannons used to roar
And his eyes turn sort of misty, and his heart begins to glow
And he takes his hat off slowly to the men of Alamo
To the thirteen days of glory at the seige of Alamo

    L'accident
((Adapted from: Vehicle (by The Ides of March) - 1970))
Composer(s): Jim Peterik - Eddy Mitchell
    Performer(s): Eddy Mitchell - 1970

    Dès que j'étendis l'horrible choc
    Provoqué par l'accident
    J'ai bondi, bousculant des personnes
Qui restaient là les bras ballants
    J'avais peur de savoir
    J'avais peur de te voir
    Couchée là, étendue
    Brisée et presque nue
    Et tu es là
    C'est toi
    L'accident ne t'épargne pas
Pourquoi le ciel a-t-il voulu ça?

Et j'ai revu dans ma mémoire
    Les causes de l'accident
Tu vivais perdue dans ta nuit noire
    Des amours de femme-enfant
    Je m'éloignais de toi
    Et tu doutais de moi
    Rongée par les remords
    Tu as cherché la mort
    Et tu es là
    C'est toi
    L'accident ne t'épargne pas
Pourquoi le ciel a-t-il voulu ça?
    Mais pourquoi?

Ça y est l'ambulance est partie
    T'emmenant vers le repos
Tu vivras, le docteur l'a dit
J'ai bu chacun de ses mots
    Maintenant j'ai mes remords
Bien sûr j'ai eu des torts
    Je me croyais très fort
Bien plus que l'eau qui dort
    Et je reste là
    Sans toi
    L'accident ne m'épargne pas
Pourquoi le ciel a-t-il voulu ça?

    Et j'ai très mal
    Si mal
Que tout au monde m'est égal
Pourquoi le ciel a-t-il voulu ça?

    L'absent
