When you look ahead, the future appears—
for now darkened, without a far horizon.
When you look back, you hear
the quiet sigh of struck spectacles,
carrying their burden, heavy or light.
Turn left, or right—
something there is moving, on its feet.
Turn inward,
and shape a world inside yourself,
one that rests nearer than you think.
Take your fingers, take your feet, by the hand,
count the trees in the forest—pure simplicity.
And for a while,
lay down the mind that insists on thinking.

When you look forward, you see the future,
now briefly colored dark, without a long view.
When you look backward, you notice
the sighs of a struck pair of glasses,
wearing a heavy or a light frame.
Look once to the left or to the right,
there something moves on feet.
Look inward
and create a world there
that lies closer to you.
Take your fingers or your feet by the hand,
count the trees in the forest, simplicity itself.
Do not use your thinking mind for a moment.
