Schrijver Frank McCourt overleden in New York
De Amerikaans-Ierse schrijver Frank McCourt is op 78-jarige leeftijd
overleden in New York, meldt de New York Times. Volgens het dagblad is
de schrijver overleden aan een uitgezaaid melanoom.
Angela's Ashes McCourt
werd een literair fenomeen in de VS met zijn debuut 'Angela's Ashes'
('De as van mijn moeder') dat hij schreef toen hij 66 was. Hierin
vertelt hij over zijn armoedige kindertijd in de Ierse stad Limerick
met een aan alcohol verslaafde vader die zijn gezin in de steek liet en
een moeder die moest bedelen om haar kinderen te kunnen voeden. Het
boek won de Pulitzer Prijs in 1997. In de VS werden er vijf miljoen
exemplaren van verkocht. Het werd vertaald in 24 talen. In 1999
verfilmde Alan Parker het boek.
Leraar McCourt
werd geboren in 1930 in Brooklyn, New York, in een grote, katholieke
Ierse familie. In 1934 keerden zijn ouders, werkloos door de Grote
Depressie, terug naar Ierland. Op zijn 19de komt McCourt terug naar New
York. Hij doet allerlei jobs voordat hij in 1959 leraar wordt.
