Hoe overleeft de ijsbeer zonder ijs?
Nergens gaat de opwarming van het klimaat zo snel als in de
poolgebieden. Als dat ijs smelt, zal ook het zeeniveau stijgen en worden
talrijke kustgebieden door overstromingen bedreigd. De poolgebieden
zijn cruciaal voor de rest van de wereld en dus heeft WWF zich ook hier
in de strijd geworpen. Er leven bovendien verschillende bijzondere en
unieke dieren op het poolijs.
In
1973 wist WWF de vijf landen in het noordpoolgebied te overtuigen een
pact te ondertekenen waarmee ze beloven de ijsbeer te beschermen. De
controle op de jacht bleek heel succesvol, want tien jaar later was het
aantal ijsberen in Noorwegen verdubbeld. WWF slaagde er ook in grote
gebieden van de noordpool te beschermen. Een oppervlakte van 350.000
vierkante kilometer is nu beschermd tegen bijvoorbeeld olieboringen.
Tijdens
de zomer smelt het ijs in het poolgebied steeds verder weg en de winter
duurt niet lang genoeg voor de ijsmassa om zich volledig te herstellen.
Voor ijsberen is het ijs tijdens de zomer van groot belang om op
zeehonden te jagen. Als het ijs aan dit tempo blijft smelten, is
tweederde van de ijsberen tegen 2050 gestorven. WWF voert daarom
onderzoek naar hoe de ecosystemen in het poolgebied door de
klimaatverandering getroffen worden.
"Diersoorten
als de ijsbeer representeren het ecosysteem van de Noordpool, dat aan
de basis ligt van het globale klimaat", zegt Geoff York, die voor WWF
het onderzoek over ijsberen coördineert. "Als we deze dieren en hun
habitat redden, beschermen we onszelf ook tegen de opwarming van het
klimaat." Sommige dieren zijn ook belangrijke voedselbronnen voor de
lokale gemeenschappen.
WWF slaagde erin de verschillende
regeringen van poollanden te overtuigen dat de klimaatverandering de
grootste bedreiging is voor de ijsbeer. Samen besloten ze zich in te
zetten voor het behoud van deze bijzondere diersoort. (br.hln)
