2.000 meisjes in België lopen gevaar op besnijdenis

Er zijn in België naar schatting 2.000 meisjes die het risico lopen genitaal verminkt te worden. De meeste van hen wonen in Brussel, maar ook in Antwerpen lopen honderden meisjes gevaar om besneden te worden. Dat schrijft Gazet van Antwerpen. De hulporganisatie GAMS gaat zich nu sterker concentreren op de aanpak van de problematiek in Vlaanderen.

Het aantal vrouwen in ons land dat besneden is, is de afgelopen tien jaar volgens schattingen verdrievoudigd: zowat 6.000. Het gaat niet alleen om vrouwen die in hun land van herkomst genitaal verminkt werden en daarna in ons land terechtkwamen, maar ook om vrouwen en meisjes die in België geboren zijn. Vaak laten hun ouders hen tijdens vakanties in hun land van origine besnijden. Maar er vinden ook clandestiene verminkingen in ons land plaats.

Nochtans zijn vrouwenbesnijdenissen in ons land verboden. Er staan gevangenisstraffen tot zeven jaar op. (br.hln - foto afp)
