Vlaamse schrijver Eriek Verpale overleden op 63-jarige leeftijd
Auteur en dichter Eriek Verpale is overleden. Dat heeft schrijver Jan Haerynck maandagavond bekendgemaakt. Bij het grote publiek was Verpale vooral bekend als schrijver van "Alles in het klein" (1990), dat in 1992 de NCR-prijs voor literatuur kreeg.
Eriek Verpale, of Eric Verpaele, zoals zijn echte naam luidde, werd geboren op 2 februari 1952 in Zelzate. Hij werd opgevoed door zijn uit Litouwen afkomstige joodse overgrootmoeder, die vlak naast hem woonde. Hierdoor werd zijn belangstelling gewekt voor de joodse cultuur. Tot aan zijn dood was Eriek Verpale bijzonder gefascineerd door het jodendom.
Bij het grote publiek was Verpale vooral bekend als schrijver van "Alles in het klein" (1990). Ook het door acteur Bob De Moor opgevoerde toneelstuk Olivetti 82 (1993) was eerst een theaterseller en werd later verfilmd door Rudi Van Den Bossche (in 2001) met in de hoofdrol Dirk Roofthooft. In 2014 werd het nogmaals verfilmd als monoloog met titel "Bernard" met in de hoofdrol Thomas Wander.
Enkele jaren geleden publiceerde Verpale nog tien gedichten in Het Liegend Konijn, meerdere in de Poëziekrant en De Brakke Hond en op de Nederlandse poëziesite Contrabas. Hij heeft nog meerdere gedichten en flarden proza plus eindeloze dagboeknotities achtergelaten.
Eriek Verpale laat een zoon na. Hij wordt in strikte intimiteit begraven. (br.hln)
