To unlock a poem's secrets partially steals its life.
*** "We seem to always know where we are in a Billy Collins poem, but not necessarily where he is going. I love to arrive with him at his arrivals. He doesn't hide things from us, as I think lesser poets do. He allows us to overhear, clearly, what he himself has discovered." ***
Introduction to Poetry
I ask them to take a poem and hold it up to the light like a color slide
or press an ear against its hive.
I say drop a mouse into a poem and watch him probe his way out,
or walk inside the poems room and feel the walls for a light switch.
I want them to water-ski across the surface of a poem waving at the authors name on the shore.
But all they want to do is tie the poem to a chair with rope and torture a confession out of it.
They begin beating it with a hose to find out what it really means.
Introduction to Poetry (vertaling)

,
William J. ("Billy") Collins geboren op 22 maart 1941 in New York City is een Amerikaanse dichter die van 2001 tot 2003 de titel mocht dragen van (the 44th Poet Laureate of the United States. In zijn thuisstaat wordt Collins in 1992 gelauwerd als " a Literary Lion of the New York Public Library en hij wordt er gekozen tot the New York State Poet van 2004.
Hij studeerde aan the College of the Holy Cross en the University of California, Riverside.
For the record, Collins doesn't much care for the word "accessible" either, because it suggests "ramps for poetically handicapped people." He likes the word "hospitable." But he concedes that "accessible" has won the day, and he's happy with the side he finds himself on. "
Some poems talk to us; others want us to witness an act of literary experimentation."
