The mystery light over the Pavilion car park

FILM of a bright, mystery object over Torquay harbourside on Tuesday night was recorded as the internet across the world went into panic mode about UFOs.

Herald Express reader Mike Collins and his wife Erich were walking around the harbour towards the Pavilion Marina car park at just after 5pm when they spotted the strange, eliptical shape hovering.

They watched the light for about 10 minutes before Mike realised he should film it.

Later Mike discovered from his daughter that his film was one of thousands across the world being shared on social media, starting on Sunday night with the Twitter hashtag #ufoattacktoturkey which became the number one trending subject.  

"I went to bed really spooked," Mike said. "People may laugh but I know what I saw.

Although he says the zoomed-in video is shaky, he is clear that it was not a helicopter, Chinese lantern or light aircraft.

"My only regret is that I didn't film it sooner. It was much brighter to start with and we kept walking towards it but it didn't move. I saw a light aircraft with red lights fly under and that was much, much smaller. By the time I got to the Marina car park and decided to film it the lights were much much dimmer."

Mike said: "We had been Christmas shopping and were walking from Debenhams to Marine Car Park.

"We were just coming up to The Offshore Pub at around 5.10 to 5.15pm.

"My wife and I spotted this very, very bright light that just stayed stationary - although my video is a little shaky where I zoomed in -but I know what I saw wasn't an helicopter (totally no noise) and certainly not a Chinese Lantern (was stationary).

"It seemed brighter to start with and seemed elliptical shape!

"One of my Daughters then sent me a link on Facebook about multiple UFO sightings in Turkey on 28 November which I found a little worrying!.

"I wonder how many other people saw it. One of my friends on Facebook said he saw something but thought it must have been a helicopter."

It happened the day after social media all over the world went into panic mode with similar videos of lights being spotted over Turkey on November 27. The sightings were feared to be either an invasionary force or a fleet of UFOs.

Hundreds of people shared pictures and videos and soon the news was followed by similar sightings in Denver and Texas, and then in Canada and Mexico and the Twitter hashtag "#ufoattacktoturkey" quickly became the number one global trending topic.

A video posted by UFO hunters secureteam10 was seen hundreds of thousands of times.

One user, Eren Dogan uploaded a video of the UFO sighting that was followed by a loud bang.

Another YouTube user, 1 Mn görüntülenme, uploaded a video and wrote: "Alright, I'm trying to zoom in to show you now. It is November 28, 2016, Sunday night. It's around 2:20 a.m. right now. The object you're seeing is in the skies of Esenler (Istanbul). I'm recording it right now. Many people like me have crowded here. We've informed the authorities and they've told us they're dealing with the situation. It is a yellow object. We suspect it's a UFO. It gives off a light and is in motion. Right now it's stationary actually but it moves position every few minutes. Very interesting."

One Tweeter commented: "So many photos being posted! Very compelling stuff!"

A second wrote: "Objects are seen in all cities of Turkey, UFO invasion in Turkey!"

Another added: "What is this? Is it really UFO? I am so afraid. I hope this is a joke."

While the strange lights were not given any official confirmation, many people suggested that the lights might be drones.

Conspiracy theorists claim to have found evidence of 'ancient walled cities' on Mars in their latest bizarre theory. 

The United Family of Anomaly Hunters, a group of UFO hunters, presented the evidence in a YouTube video.

The images show a number of aerial views, some of which look like eroded domes that could be surrounded by virtually circular rings.

The ring and cone structures were spotted on Elysium Planitia, a plain near the Martian equator. 

The title of the video, 'Nasa Spots Walled Cities on Mars from MRO Satellite', implies Nasa has claimed these structures are walled cities.

The video has been met with mixed reaction - some firmly believed the structures show signs of life.

'There are structures similar to these all over certain areas in South Africa,' one user said.

'I firmly believe Mars still has some remnants of it's civilisation living underground,' said another.

While others put it down to natural geological processes.

'You should change your channel's name to "Martian Geology," because that's what were actually looking at,' one commenter said. 

The images were taken by Nasa's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO). 

The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has been circling the red planet, capturing pictures using its High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera, since 2006.

Previously, ESA has released an image of the plain, showing what looks like a dust-covered frozen sea. 

Nasa images also show the plain was once a highly volcanic region, meaning there was lots of opportunity for the surface to be remoulded and reshaped.

People who doubt the moon landings are more likely to be selfish and attention-seeking, according to a study earlier this year.

Over the course of three online-based studies, researchers at the University of Kent showed strong links between the belief in conspiracy theories and negative psychological traits.

Writing in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science, the team explained: 'Previous research linked the endorsement of conspiracy theories to low self-esteem.'

In the first study, a total of 202 participants completed questionnaires on conspiracy beliefs, asking how strongly they agreed with specific statements, such as whether governments carried out acts of terrorism on their own soil.

Alongside this, they were asked to complete a narcissist scale and a self-esteem assessment.

The results showed that those people who rated highly on the narcissism scale and who had low self-esteem were more likely to be conspiracy believers.

Chinese astronaut hears non-causal knock in space

Chinese astronaut Yang Liwei said that he had heard a mysterious knock during his flight in space, China Central Television reported.

Yang, born in June 1965 in northeastern Liaoning Province, is China's first astronaut and now a major general. On Oct. 16, 2003, he stepped out of his re-entry module after a 21-hour flying in space, making him the 241st human being worldwide to visit outer space.

When he recalled his experience in space during a recent interview, he said, "A non-causal situation I have met in space is a knock that appeared from time to time."

He explained that the sound suddenly appeared without any rhyme or reason. "It neither came from outside nor inside the spaceship, but sounded like someone is knocking the body of the spaceship just as knocking an iron bucket with a wooden hammer," Yang said.

Yang said he was very nervous when he heard the sound, and moved close to the porthole to try to find out the cause. However, nothing out of the ordinary appeared both inside and outside.

After returning to earth, he told technicians about the mysterious sound, and tried to imitate it with some instruments, so as to solve the mystery. But Yang said he had never heard the exact sound again.

The sound has also been heard by Shenzhou 6 and Shenzhou 7 astronauts. Yang said, "Before entering space, I have told them that the sound is a normal phenomenon, so there is no need to worry."

Ultra-Diffuse Ghost Galaxies Float Among Us

Ultra-diffuse galaxies are as faint as dwarf galaxies, but spread over an area the size of the Milky Way — with about 1/1000th the number of stars. A new simulation suggests many supernovas at the beginning of a galaxy's life can push the stars and dark matter outward to a great size. Like ghosts, ultra-diffuse galaxies often float undetected in the night sky — stretching the size of the Milky Way, but containing only a dwarf galaxy's worth of stars. Now, a new simulation suggests their explosive origins, and hints that there may be many more than seen so far.

Researchers uncovered the first ultra-diffuse galaxy in 2015, and were puzzled by how the faint galaxy came to have such a large size with so few stars. Since then, they've spotted many more with the most sensitive telescopes, mostly in large clusters of many galaxies. But this new research suggests that internal dynamics in a forming galaxy, rather than processes happening within clusters, can blow a dwarf up to enormous, spread-out size — and thus they may pepper the universe even far from large clusters, hiding in plain sight because of their faintness.

An international collaboration called NIHAO — the Numerical Investigation of a Hundred Astronomical Objects — simulated the formation of 100 galaxies in extreme detail, tracking the way gases, forming stars and dark matterinteracted within the systems. Within that 100, they found some that matched the profile of the newly discovered ultra-diffuse galaxies. So they worked backward to discern what had caused them — not big galaxies failing and growing faint, but dwarf galaxies stretched to an extraordinary size. "Once stars explode supernovae, they release a lot of energy into the surrounding gas, and this gas can be expelled really, really fast," Arianna di Cintio, a researcher at University of Copenhagen's DARK Cosmology Center and lead author on the new work, told Space.com. If dwarf galaxies experience enough of these supernovas early on in their lives, she said, the galaxy can balloon outwards, borne on the outflows of gas.

"Basically, the dark-matter particles start flying outwards from the center of the galaxy, and this process happens for the stars as well," di Cintio said. "At the end of the day, you form a galaxy which has few stars, so it's a dwarf galaxy, but the stars have spread over a large, large surface — something similar to the Milky Way."

Thus, the galaxies' few million stars puff up to fill a space that could ordinarily host about 1,000 times that number.

This video from NIHAO (PI A.V. Macciò, NYUAD) shows a simulation of an ultra-diffuse galaxy's formation, depicting the fountains of gas launching out of the galaxy.

It's easier to find ultra-diffuse galaxies in big galaxy clusters because that's where the most powerful telescopes set their sights — for instance, the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan's Subaru telescope found 854 of them in the Coma Cluster, according to a statement by the university's Niels Bohr Institute. Just a few have been found so far floating on their own, di Cintio said.

The fact that the simulation created these familiar — albeit mysterious — structures is "a very, very nice confirmation of what we think is there — the current cosmological model," di Cintio said. "This effect of expansion of dark matter and stars, we knew that it existed for a few years, [but] no one connected it yet to ultra-diffuse galaxies because they weren't observed yet."

Some of the 854 ultra-diffuse galaxies found by the Subaru Telescope in the Coma galaxy cluster, about 300 million light-years away. Three hundred and thirty-two of them are Milky Way-size.

Di Cintio said the next steps are to try and verify more ultra-diffuse galaxies living on their own, outside of big clusters, and to measure their mass — potentially through gravitational lensing — to help verify that they're really dwarf-galaxy-mass. In general, further research will help researchers discover extremely faint, low-surface-brightness galaxies that may lurk in our telescopes' fields of view.

"So far, we were blind, in a certain sense, to these low-surface-brightness and ultra-diffuse galaxies," di Cintio said. "We may be looking around and finding thousands of galaxies that we didn't even think about yet."

The new work was detailed Nov. 29 in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Massive 'Baby' Stars Are Born with Cosmic Fireworks

The universe celebrates the birth of massive stars with cosmic fireworks, just as it does with its smaller siblings, a new study shows. 

Stars the size of the sun produce outbursts as they interact with the disk of material around them, but larger stars shine so brightly that scientists thought their disks would burn away quickly. For the first time, astronomers have spotted periodic explosions in the material surrounding a massive star as it swallows a planet-size clump of gas from its disk, suggesting that these giant stars form the same way as their smaller counterparts.

"These outbursts, which are several orders of magnitude larger than their lower-mass siblings, can release about as much energy as our sun delivers in over 100,000 years," Alessio Caratti o Garatti, an astronomer at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies in Ireland, said in a statement. "Surprisingly, the fireworks are observed not just at the end of the lives of massive stars, as supernovae, but also at their birth!" he said.

A time-lapse movie

Stars form as gravity draws gas and dust together in space. For stars like the sun, the material flattens into an accretion disk, falling into the center, where the star is born. But the higher radiation produced by the largest stars, which can weigh more than 100 times the mass of the sun, was thought to burn away the disk around it, keeping material from falling inward and requiring another path to their birth.

Using the Gemini North telescope in Hawaii, the European Southern Observatory in Chile, the Calar Alto Observatory in Spain and the California-based SOFIA Observatory, which is mounted on an airplane, the astronomers spotted explosive outbursts in the disk surrounding a massive star about 6,000 light-years from the sun. As the star swallowed an enormous gob of gas about twice as massive as Jupiter, it released bursts of energy revealed as a bright flare-up around the star. According to the researchers, the fireworks suggest that the material survived the destructive radiation previously thought to obliterate it to fall onto the large stars, echoing the process followed by smaller stellar objects.

"How accretion disks can survive around these massive stars is still a mystery," Caratti o Garatti said in the statement.

The disk that produces the fireworks makes star birth challenging to spot because the dense material lies between Earth and the star. Infrared telescopes such as Gemini can pierce through the cloud to spot what's happening at the center. Unlike their smaller siblings, the largest stars lie farther away from the sun, adding to the difficulty. And, compared to stars like the sun, the birth of massive stars is brief, lasting only about 100,000 years, according to Caratti o Garatti. In contrast, smaller stars like the sun can take hundreds of times longer to form. 

"When we study the formation of higher-mass stars, it's like watching a time-lapse movie when compared to less-massive stars," Caratti o Garatti said. "Although the process for massive stars is fast and furious, it still takes tens of thousands of years."

Previous studies suggested that outbursts around other stars last only a few years. The team estimated that the burst they studied started about 16 months ago, and it is continuing to release energy weakly today, they said.

"While this research presents the strongest case yet for similar formation processes for low- and high-mass stars, there is still a lot to understand — especially whether planets can form in the same way around stars at both ends of the mass spectrum," team member Bringfried Stecklum, an astronomer at the Thüringer Landessternwarte Tautenburg in Germany, said in the statement.

The research was published Nov. 14 in the journal Nature Physics.

The Sun Looks Clean as Hell Right Now

The sun could be the star of some interstellar Clearasil commercial right now, because there’s barely a spot on it. According to NASA, our nearest star is looking so fresh and clean because it hit its lowest level of solar activity since 2011 — almost exactly five years ago.

On Monday, NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory posted a video of our squeaky-clean sun, and explained that it was on its way to solar minimum, a time in the sun’s roughly 11-year solar cycle when there are almost no sunspots. NASA describes it as a “pendulum-like pattern,” and notes that there have been very, very few sunspots over the past “several days.”

The last time the sun was this spotless was in 2011 in mid-November, during a stretch that lasted from the 14th to the 18th. A few years after that, the sun reached its most-recent peak of solar activity in early 2014.

NASA says the number of sunspots — normal, temporary blemishes on the star’s surface as a result of reduced surface temperature in that area — has been declining faster than they expected, though it doesn’t appear that the quicker rate will move up the solar cycle timeline. The sun is still expected to hit its true solar minimum in 2021.

The Sun is lookin' good.

Just because the sun is spot-free now, and headed towards an even cleaner future, doesn’t mean there won’t be some sunspot breakouts before then. In fact, they might be sprouting up with a vengeance. “No doubt more and larger sunspots will inevitably appear, but we’ll just have to wait and see,” NASA wrote in its blog post.

While checking out Google sky I noticed something interesting. That every once in a while there was an unusual structure in space. These structures are usually balance and geometrical in shape, but sometimes rounded, with metallic tint to them. 

This particular one is cube, made up of smaller areas that are also cubes. Google Sky map was not as clear as I wanted, so I went to Sky-Map.org and found a similar sky map, but the quality of the detail is more focused. These are the photos above. Below are  the photos from Google sky. 

The size of this space station is unknown since Google ruler is inaccurate in the sky version. However it looks Earth size or bigger in my opinion.

Watch Large Group Of UFOs Leaving From The Surface Of The Moon

A video showing multiple tiny bead-like structures leaving the Moon’s bottom surface has received thousands of views and mixed reactions. The so-called large group of UFOs leaving the Moon looks very luminous.

Despite being considered as deceptive, many viewers still believe the video shows aliens departing from the surface of the Moon.

One viewer posted that those were extraterrestrial beings wanting to establish New World Order, but they lost hope and decided to go home because Donald Trump won the election.

Talia Adagio1 added that they looked like they were landing instead of leaving as there was the same effect in reverse on the right side.

Even former hacker Gary McKinnon has joined the debate saying that the video doesn’t show alien activity, but just an optical illusion.

He said that as more people get better telescopes more footage of objects leaving the moon being observed. However, this particular video looked like far too many, Gary explained. He concluded that it must be visual artifacting.

Photographer John Biondo agreed to Gary saying that the video does not show UFOs, but a phenomenon often seen at the Moon’s edge. John explained that the event is called Chromatic Aberration, which can also be seen more if the lens is out of focus, such as the video in question.

Another viewer said that it was just an optical illusion as a result of the high air humidity and distorted light from the moon or reflected bright objects in the distance on the earth.

Others are convinced the video shows alien UFOs. They explained that seeing fleets of UFOs in orbit or move around the moon horizon can happen more often if the edge of the moon is observed well enough.

Some UFO hunters noted that many Apollo astronauts have claimed they saw UFOs on and near the moon. They suggested that these space objects are a form of protection from future moon landing missions. They explained that the Earth’s natural satellite might be owned by an alien species that’s not keen on sharing.

Hundreds of People See Fleet Of UFOs In Multiple Cities Across Turkey

A group of UFOs observed in the sky above Turkey and “#ufoattacktoturkey” trended on Twitter as sky watchers posted strange videos on the social media platform.

The fleet of UFOs composed of four to five lights was seen over households across the country.

A video of the event also posted to YouTube channel SecureTeam10. It has been viewed thousands of times in less than 24 hours.

The video channel said that the fleet of unidentified lights was spotted in several cities all over the country of Turkey, causing many people to panic.

At one point on November 27, the channel claimed the hashtag became the number one trending topic in the world.

Twitter users have left equally baffled by the images.

One user commented that it is a very compelling stuff as many photos were being posted.

Another one wrote UFO invasion happening in Turkey as unidentified flying objects were witnessed in many cities of the country.

Other users expressed fear and hoped that the entire thing was a joke.

No official confirmation yet on the strange lights, but there were suggestions that they could be drones.

UFO Researchers Spot Mysterious Object On A Comet’s Surface

An object that resembles a stealth fighter jet has been noticed on a comet in images snapped by a spaceship.

The European Space Agency (ESA) launched the Rosetta space probe to investigate Comet P67. It announced they had ended the mission of the lander in September.

Now, alien hunters claim the space probe came across alien technology on the ball of rock before the mission ended.

The discovery was made public by prolific UFO hunters who posted pictures from the Rosetta. They said that craft has a tail fin like a plane and sides similar to a stealth fighter jet.

The alien researchers believe that the so-called UFO on the rock is not part of the comet’s surface because of the object’s white color.

They speculated that the ESA used their Rosetta lander to take closer photos of the mysterious object. They think the ESA announcement of ending their mission because the lander no longer responds is a ruse to make the public believe.

They explained that ESA continues their mission but this time for extraterrestrial technology that can be retrieved and used, like the one in the photo.

Hundreds Of People Spot A UFO Across Florida Skies

More than a hundred people witnessed a massive, mysterious object flying across the sky from West to Florida Panhandle at around 11 pm on November 23.  The unidentified flying object (UFO), according to the witnesses on Florida’s western coast, looked like a fireball. People living in the area thought aliens invaded them after seeing the strange bright light in the night sky.

Many people from Key West to the Florida Panhandle, who observed the UFO, reported the strange sighting to the local authorities as alien invasion speculation unfolded.

Meteorologist Josh Stone, who works in ABC7, described the light as bright as the sun with a little rumbling after it disappeared. Josh claimed that the North Point Police Department even caught the unusual event on their dashboard cameras.

Some residents have concluded that the rare fireball was a UFO controlled by space aliens. It seemed like a lot of paranoia in social media as some were declaring it was indeed an alien invasion.

Unidentified flying object (UFO) is generally defined as any apparent anomaly or event in the sky that can’t be identified as known phenomenon or object. However, sometimes a UFO becomes identifiable because of the low quality of evidence.

Lookin' Good, Mars! ExoMars' First High-Res Photos Are Incredible

Behold! The European Space Agency's new Mars orbiter just sent back its first high-resolution images of the Red Planet, and the view is amazing.

The ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) arrived at Mars on Oct. 19, when its companion spacecraft Schiaparelli crash-landed on the planet's surface. Since then, TGO has been circling Mars, testing out its machinery, and taking spectacularly sharp pictures of the landscape using its Colour and Stereo Surface Imaging System (CaSSIS). ESA stitched together the best of these photos in a cool new flyover video.

"The first images we received are absolutely spectacular ― and it was only meant to be a test," Nicolas Thomas, CaSSIS team leader at the University of Bern's Center of Space and Habitability, said in a statement. [Photos: Europe's ExoMars Missions to Mars in Pictures]

These first images allowed ESA to test the camera's color- and stereo-imaging capabilities, which would allow CaSSIS to build 3D maps of the Martian surface using measurements with sound waves.

Though the color-imaging equipment was functioning as planned, the first photos appear black and white. That's because the areas photographed are dusty ― volcanic without much color to be seen. "We will have to wait a little until something colorful passes under the spacecraft," Thomas said. 

The first stereo reconstruction of a small area in Noctis Labyrinthus on Mars, created by the Colour and Stereo Surface Imaging System (CaSSIS) aboard the European Space Agency's ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter. TGO is currently orbiting Mars once every four days in a highly elliptical path. At its closest, the spacecraft flies within 155 miles (250 kilometers) of the ground. These close approaches are happening quickly before the orbiter raises its altitude to about 62,000 miles (100,000 km).

CaSSIS was up and running for two of these approaches during its testing phase and returned a total of 11 images. ESA then combined some of the new photos in the video above to simulate a flyover of Hebes Chasma, a 190-mile-long (310 km) canyon in the Martian surface.

"We saw Hebes Chasma at 2.8 meters per pixel," said Thomas. "That’s a bit like flying over Bern at 15,000 kilometers [9,300 miles] per hour and simultaneously getting sharp pictures of cars in Zürich."

A structure called Arsia Chasmata on the flanks of one of the large Martian volcanoes, Arsia Mons. This view was created by the Colour and Stereo Surface Imaging System (CaSSIS) aboard the European Space Agency's ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter. The width of the image is around 16 miles (25 kilometers). The formation is volcanic in origin, and pit craters are visible.

After the botched landing of the Schiaparelli spacecraft in October, pressures have been high for the ExoMars team. "A lot of public attention has been on the failed landing of Schiaparelli, but TGO has been working really well, so we have been extremely busy in the past month," Thomas said.

"We were quite nervous but it looks as though almost everything functioned as we planned it. The resulting images are really sharp," Antoine Pommerol, a CaSSIS co-investigator at the Center of Space and Habitability in Bern, said in the same statement.

For the next few months, the team will continue to prepare CaSSIS for its prime mission. "The test was very successful but we have identified a couple of things that need to be improved in the onboard software and in the ground post-processing," Thomas said.

TGO will spend nine to 12 months "aerobraking," or slowing down to round out its elliptical orbit. Eventually, the orbiter will circle the planet at a constant altitude of about 250 miles (400 km). Its primary science mission is scheduled to begin by the end of 2017. Then TGO will begin studying gases in the Martian atmosphere.

What Will We Do When Hubble Dies?

For a generation, the Hubble Space Telescope has been exposing the universe's deepest, darkest secrets. From imaging the volcanoes of Jupiter's moon Io, to watching the dramatic breakup of comets, imaging baby galaxies, and helping to nail down the universe's age, its data has been instrumental in today's understanding of the cosmos near and far.

But it's an old telescope, unmaintained since the last space shuttle mission visited in 2009. While the observatory is in excellent health today, it's expected to stop collecting data sometime in the 2020s. What will we lose when the telescope finally dies?

NASA is quick to point out that the James Webb Space Telescope, expected to launch in 2018, will enhance Hubble's capabilities in many ways. But for the telescope's higher resolution and ability to peer back to the very early days of the universe, there is one key thing it doesn't have: ultraviolet capabilities. (It also will lack some of Hubble's fine spectral resolution, and ability to observe a special spectral line called H-alpha that is useful for nebulae and stars.)

Astronomers are being urged to submit as many UV proposals to Hubble as possible because once it dies, there are no immediate plans to launch a successor. (Astronomers could then pull from the archive as needed in future decades.) Earth's atmosphere filters out UV, which is great for protecting life, but bad for UV astronomy, so it needs to be done from space. Astronomers say they don't think another UV telescope will fly until the 2030s, at the earliest.

"For example, one of the big topics that we're going to look at in star and planet formation is the accretion of gas on to young, newly forming stars or planets," said Adam Kraus, an astronomer at the University of Texas at Austin. He explained that as gas falls on to budding stars and planets, they radiate most of their energy in the blue and ultraviolet wavelengths. Webb won't be able to see this as Hubble does, he told Seeker.

NASA's Jane Rigby, the deputy project scientist for Webb's operations, points out that the new telescope is designed to do science that Hubble can't. Webb has seven times more collecting area and also works at near absolute zero (the coldest temperature possible). Hubble works at room temperature, so it can't see as well in the infrared. Webb will see into dusty places where stars are forming, or galaxies that have been deeply "redshifted" (with spectral lines moving towards the red end of the spectrum) due to cosmic expansion.

Luckily for astronomers, it's expected that Hubble's and Webb's time in space will overlap. Hubble has a rich archive of observations that Webb could spend time looking at, including the famous "deep fields" of young galaxies. This type of work will be Webb's "bread and butter", Rigby said.

There's also the potential to make stereoscopic or "3D" images of several objects, since Hubble (in low Earth orbit) will be a million miles away from Webb, further out in space. At the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), which manages Hubble observations, some astronomers suggest images could be taken of nearby objects.

"You could see Saturn's rings sticking out of the page, Mars looking like a globe, or Jupiter and its moons moving," Joel Green, a project scientist at STScI, told Seeker. "There's a few scientific reasons, too. You might want to look at how cloud structures change in 3D, or how an impact happens in 3D."

Another possibility, he added, would be looking at a star explosion (or supernova) and from the distance between the telescopes, finding out where the explosion is coming from and examining certain features of the explosion.

Hubble's ultraviolet capabilities are not replicated in any telescope now, or in the near future. Here, possible water plumes on Europa (disclosed earlier this year) are imaged using Hubble's ultraviolet filters.

Other observatories are planned after Webb. One is the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST), which would use Hubble-class hardware that has a wider field of view. Its specialty would be dark energy and exoplanets. Another is the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), which would look at planets passing in front of the brightest stars in our sky. These likely would get going in the 2020s, if funding for the missions is fully approved.

But the next generation is still being worked out. NASA draws heavily from the National Science Foundation's Decadal Survey when planning its missions. Right now, proposals are being formulated to present to members of the next decadal survey, which will be released in 2020.

This will be the battleground for where UV astronomy is determined for the near future. NASA is planning to do up to four mission concept studies to present for the 2020 Decadal Survey, including a mission called the Large Ultraviolet/Optical/Infrared Surveyor (LUVOIR). As the name implies, it's supposed to be capable of observing in several wavelengths.

If it flies, it would examine protoplanetary disks, look for and image black holes, map the Milky Way and even look at nearby exoplanet atmospheres for signs of habitability. But it is competing against several other mission concepts, including one focused on infrared (Far-IR Surveyor), one for X-rays (X-ray surveyor) and a more modest UV and optical observer called HabEx. HabEx may use a special, separate shield to filter out a star's light for direct planet observations, which would be a first in astronomy.

"We're very hopeful that the national community in 2020 will fund one of these things and go forward," said Karl Stapelfeldt, the chief scientist of NASA's exoplanet science program. The aim is not only to be able to look at Earth-like planets around nearby stars, he said, but to study the rest of the universe as well.

There are other UV telescopes being proposed, such as Advanced Technology Large Aperture Space Telescope or ATLAST (which was considered in the last decadal survey) and the High Definition Space Telescope (HDST). This makes for a dizzying array of options and ideas for anybody trying to think ahead for the next generation of space telescopes.

While this is all being discussed, however, Webb is getting ready for launch. NASA's Rigby said she is greatly looking forward to the science that the telescope will provide.

"When you look the way Webb is designed, it is building on the legacy of Hubble," she said. "It's very much being built to do the things Hubble can't, because the things Hubble can do it's done so exquisitely... it's optimized in a totally different direction from Hubble, because Hubble has given us a legacy over 25 years within the range of its capabilities."

Video – Native American Prophecies, UFO’s And The Coming Of A Messiah
- PART I

The following article was inspired by a dialogue between three groups of people:

1) researchers into the UFO and crop circle activity, which has drawn increasing attention in recent years,

2) Native Americans, whose prophecies point to the current times as being a critical turning point for humanity, and

3) A growing body of people whose spiritual teachings predict the return of a Great Teacher/Messiah/Buddha/Elder Brother at this time.

Here we attempt to correlate their ideas, postulating that there may be a unifying theme between them, and that many of the ‘unexplainable’ phenomena that are now happening daily in our world — spontaneous healings, weeping and bleeding statues, miracle waters, milk drinking statues, visionary experiences, and extraterrestrial activity — are signs that humankind is on the verge of a tremendous evolutionary advance — one that will be aided by the ‘angels’ and ‘guardians’ who some claim are always with us, protecting our earth and guiding our every step.

Native Prophets of the Americas

Until recent years it has been a controversial step for native leaders to publish their prophecies, but many are now coming forward because the prophecies themselves contain a directive to go out and warn the world when certain signs appear. Signs such as the ‘rain of fire’ and ‘gourd of ashes’ (atomic warfare) and the ‘shaking of the earth’ (earthquakes) are seen as indications that it is time.

There are parallel themes in many of the prophecies:

1) We are entering a time of purification and can expect to witness chaos and destruction in all the kingdoms of nature.

2) It is a time for the reuniting of the races. Barriers of religion and nationality will begin to fall as all people realize their essential unity.

3) We must heal the damage done to Mother Earth, the source of life, and recognize that all living things are endowed with spirit.

4) In the coming times we will see the return of one or more Great Teachers who will guide us into the future.

Quetzalcoatl’s Promise

Through the legends of the native peoples of North and South America, there runs a recurring thread — the tale of a Great White Teacher who came in ancient times to free the people from slavery, war, and human sacrifice. He showed them instead, a way of peace, dignity and brotherhood. He brought prosperity to the poor tribes by introducing agricultural methods and ways of self sufficiency. He renovated their patterns of worship, and taught them a special reverence for Venus, the Morning Star, the object of His daily meditations.

From Alaska to the tip of South America His story can be found. His names were many: Tah-co-pah, the Healer; Ee-me-shee, the Wind God; Chee-zoos, God of the dawn light. Today He is best remembered as Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent, or Kukulcan. His image graces the resurrected pyramids and temples throughout these lands. The Prophet was bearded, with long hair, and wore white flowing robes. Wherever He went, He trained 12 disciples to carry on His work after His departure.

Before He departed He gave a prophecy — that the cultures He had inspired would eventually fall to the tragedy of greed and war. The temples would be burned, the populations decimated. He warned His people to protect their sacred writings, and promised that He would Himself return to restore order and balance and to open again the pages of the ancient wisdom books. When He left, He traveled East, and it is from the East He promised to return.

Black Elk and Crazy Horse

Black Elk and Crazy Horse were leaders of the Lakota Sioux in the late 1800s when the US was decimating its native populations. Each had a vision of the future.

Black Elk saw that his people, after long years of destitution and death, would loose heart and the sacred hoop of his nation would be broken. But after seven generations he saw a vision of the nation being reunited and becoming part of the greater hoop of all the nations of the earth. At that time a great Prophet from the east would bring a message of hope to all people.

Crazy Horse’s vision also foretold the darkness that would descend on his people. He saw the coming of automobiles and airplanes and the tragic world wars of the modern era. But after the last war, he saw his people gradually awaken and begin to dance again, this time along with people of all colors, under the Sacred Tree of Life.

The Hopi’s — Waiting for Pahana

In 1948, Thomas Banyacya accepted the task of warning the world of the events foretold in the Hopi prophecies. The Hopi’s, he says, had been instructed to seek a “house of mica” (glass) that would stand on the eastern shore of Turtle Island (the US). The Hopi’s saw the UN building in New York as the house of mica. Beginning in 1949, they sought entry to its assembly to: 1) look for their True White Brother, 2) seek justice for Indian brothers and sisters and good people everywhere, and 3) warn leaders of the coming purification. In 1992 and again in 1993 they were able to deliver their prophecies.

Hopi legend speaks of the Pahana, or the True White Brother, who once lived with the people and would return in the time of Koyaanisquatsi, when the world was beset by fearful troubles and chaos. Then He would unite the broken tribes and reestablish balance and harmony.

Mayan Prophecy

Don Alejandro Oxlaj, a priest and seventh generation medicine man from Guatemala, calls the times we live in as “crucial for our future survival,” and hopes to alert the world to the momentous changes that he says are now occurring. As head of the Quiche Maya Elder Council, representing 21 Mayan regions, he is a wisdom keeper of the Mayan calendar and prophecies. He has received permission from the Council to publish, for the first time in 500 years, the Mayan prophecies.

Hunbatz Men is a Mayan daykeeper, an expert on theological and calendrical systems of the ancient Mayan civilization. He has published sacred teachings that were hidden at the time of the Spanish conquest. He speaks of Kukulcan and Quetzacoatl, not so much in light of an expected return, but rather in terms of the possibility in the coming times for each of us to attain His same exalted stage by treading the path of attaining knowledge.

White Buffalo Calf Woman of the Lakota

The Lakota Sioux tell of their Messiah, the White Buffalo Calf Woman, who came to the people in a time of great need. She brought the Sacred Pipe and established the foundation of their ritual and social life. When she left, she turned into a white buffalo, and promised to someday return. In 1992 a white buffalo calf, named Miracle, was born in Janestown, Wisconsin. This was considered a sign that the promise was fulfilled.

David Gehue, Canadian Mi’kmaq, says we are in the final stages of transition when “The Great Spirit takes the earth in both hands and shakes it violently.” He speaks of a mysterious person in olden times who “came from the rising sun and went to the setting sun.” He warned them of the coming of seven evil cycles when the great white monster “would disperse the people to lives of misery and destitution.” The mysterious brother said he would come back from the rising sun with a new spirit and power that would destroy the white monster. At that time the wisdom of the Elders would again be heeded and life restored to balance.

Jake Swamp of the Mohawk nation tells of the Peacemaker, Deganawida, who unified the tribes of the Iroquois Confederacy (an eastern group whose system of laws inspired the Constitution of the US.) The Peacemaker foresaw the events that would destroy the lives and culture of the Confederacy tribes, but predicted that in time there would be born many children who would heal the ancient wounds, and also a great Prophet, a World Uniter, who would renew the spirit of man in a way more worldwide and all-embracing than ever before in history.

Peruvian Prophecy
High in the Peruvian Andes, at 17,000 feet, live a people known as the Q’ero, who fled to higher ground 500 years ago, at the coming of the conquest. Their prophecies have predicted that it is now time for the great mastay, the gathering of the peoples, and for the return of Pachacuti, the builder of Machu Picchu and the founder of the Inca Confederacy, whom they regard as their Messiah. His return to the world in the present era will be on a collective level.

UFOs

The following is a statement by Willaru Huayta, Peruvian Incan spiritual teacher, describing his thoughts about UFOs:

“The extraterrestrials are of the White Brotherhood from other planets….In South America there are still physical traces that give testimony to a time when we worked closely with our older brothers from other planets. In antiquity our ancestors — the Mayans, Aztecs, and Incas — received visits from other worlds.

“The return of these ships at this time needs to be understood. We are on the eve of a great cosmic transition. They are here to assist us through this transition period. As the pace quickens during the next few years they will be making themselves known more and more through direct contact with individuals, both physically and non-physically. It is their mission to guide us safely through this transition by awakening our consciousness.”

The Hopi also claim a long standing relationship with the UFO extraterrestrials. Chief Dan Katchongva (now deceased) said of the UFOs: “We believe other planets are inhabited and that our prayers are heard there.” He connects their presence with the present purification their prophecies have described and with the return of the True White Brother.

Video – Native American Prophecies, UFO’s And The Coming Of A Messiah - PART II

UFO researcher Paul Solem, who worked with Katchongva, describes their occupants in this way:

“There is no reason to fear these people. They are like the angels. They come from the planet Venus and they are here only to lend credence to prophecy, not to harm anyone.”

He says the saucer people look just like humans, but seem to be of an almost divine quality. They keep their hair cut neatly to the shoulders. Because of their fine qualities and the almost musical tone of their voices, it is difficult to tell male from female.

THE COMING OF MAITREYA

Since 1975 Benjamin Creme has traveled the world with a unique and singular message — that we are living in an era which will see the return to our everyday lives of highly evolved spiritual teachers. For the next 2,000 years, during the whole age of Aquarius, they will work and live among us, helping us find solutions to our world problems.

He claims this information came to him when he was approached, in 1959, by a spiritual personage whom he calls a Master of Wisdom, one of a group of over 60 Masters who oversee the evolution of our earth. The Master told him that the leader and teacher of this group, whose name is Maitreya, will, in the coming years, begin His mission as World Teacher for the Aquarian Age. He said that Maitreya is the fulfillment of the prophecies of all religions that predict the return of a Teacher in our day, and that not only Maitreya, but about 40 members of His hierarchical group will return along with Him in physical incarnation.

Maitreya’s concern in our modern world is that humanity learn the art of sharing. The present economic disparities that exist between the nations contain, He says, the seeds of a third World War. We must take the steps towards ensuring an adequate livestyle for all of earth’s inhabitants or face the awesome possibility of complete annihilation. If we do successfully make these changes (and He believes that we will), He promises that awaiting us in the future times is an age in which we will begin to express more fully the aspects of Love, Brotherhood, and world unity.

Creme claims that Maitreya has been living in the immigrant section of London since l977, and is quietly spreading His energies into the world until the time when He begins His public mission.

The following ideas are Creme’s commentary on some of the little understood occurrences in our world. Because he is in constant contact with a Master his comments may give us a view of these events from a spiritual perspective.They are offered, not in a dogmatic sense, but simply as possibilities, suggestions for thought, and left to the discrimination of the reader as to their merit and rationality.

The Christ of the Americas

Concerning the White God who worked among the cultural groups of the Western Hemisphere, Creme suggests that He was an incarnation of the Master Jesus, in a mission which took place in the 7th and 8th centuries AD. Maitreya’s connection with Jesus is that He is the entity who overshadowed the disciple Jesus from the baptism to the crucifixion. After His death in Palestine, Jesus was reincarnated as Apollonius of Tyana and, in His next incarnation, as the ‘Christ of the Americas’. He profoundly influenced the cultures of two continents.

UFOs — From Where Do They Come?

Creme says that all the UFO’s are from our own solar system, mainly from Venus and Mars, and “number in the thousands and even millions.” Every planet in our system is inhabited and each has a Spiritual Hierarchy, but because the inhabitants exist in etheric matter, they are invisible to human eyes. We have a very close affiliation with Venus because in our early evolution it was responsible for the implanting of the quality of mind or manas in humanity.

The spacecrafts also exist in etheric matter, and are normally invisible. We are able to see them because the pilots can lower the vibrational level of the ship. Creme calls them Space Brothers and claims they look similar to us because they belong to the human branch of evolution, which exists on all of the planets.

One beneficent service they perform is to counteract the effects of radiation released by our testing, chemical spills, and careless use of radioactive substances. They have ‘implosion’ devices which neutralize the effects, and without their help we would be in a very sad state.

Their activities in relation to earth are part of a preparation for the coming age, which is crucial for our evolution. What happens here affects not only our own planetary existence but that of the other planetary bodies in our system as well.

The physical manufacturing of the ships is a combined effort of the inhabitants of Venus and Mars, who, “have visited this planet for countless millennia and are very closely concerned with the externalization of our Spiritual Hierarchy into the world.” As Venus is the more highly advanced of the two, it offers the design. Mars, as the great ‘factory’ planet, actually manufactures them. They are made by a combination of thought and very high technology, far beyond anything we know about today.

Crop Circles 

Creme says the crop circles are all created by UFOs and are closely connected with the work of the Hierarchy. The specific purpose of the circles is to recreate the ‘grid’ of the earth’s magnetic field on the physical plane. Each circle is a chakra, or vortex of magnetic energy. They are all ideograms and echo symbology used in the time of Atlantis. They “will become ‘batteries of energy’ for humanity in connection with a new energy source, part of the science of light which lies just ahead for humanity.” Most of them have been created in England to call attention of the world to the country where Maitreya has begun His mission, but they can be found all over the world. Mr. Creme says that allied to the crop circle activity are the various miraculous and visionary phenomena which are occurring worldwide. He claims that all are produced by the Masters, that “they are signs that we have come to the end of one era and the beginning of a new one, and that the Christ has returned to the world to inaugurate this new cycle. These signs are given to uphold people’s faith and hope in the future and in a spiritual basis to life, to keep them aware that we are in a world which is constantly changing, and that the days of miracles are not over. The miracles of the Bible, for example, and also of earlier times, are being repeated now daily, almost hourly, across the world. These events add up to very definite evidence to humanity that the time is nigh for the appearance of Maitreya, the Christ, openly in the world.”

UFO convention lands in Florida

Channel 4's Scott Johnson learns about close encounters, local sightings

ORLANDO, Fla. - Experts on unidentified flying objects from all over the world picked Orlando recently, to come together and discuss the things we see in the sky and where they may come from. So Channel 4's Scott Johnson took the trek into the unknown, to hear stories and find out more about everything from close encounters to UFO sightings in our area.

The annual event is with the Mutual UFO Network, or MUFON for short. Morgan Beall, state director of Florida for MUFON, describes the network as the world's oldest and largest UFO phenomenon investigative body -- bringing in people and speakers from around the globe.

"We're still learning the physicality of the phenomenon, you know. What it is, what it does, its characteristics. The witnesses actually have, you know, very extraordinary claims," Beall told Scott.

A few hundred show up to the Hilton just outside of Walt Disney World for something the group doesn't feel belongs in Fantasyland.   

"We try and stick to serious researchers, scientists," said Beall. "People with heavy backgrounds. People who have really taken this phenomenon serious."

Scott doesn't know what to expect when he gets there, and at the beginning of the event, he tries to relate as best he can.

"Nanu, Nanu," said Scott to the crowd.

Well, he tries.

"Have you ever been to a 'Star Trek' convention?" Scott asked Robert Powell, MUFON's director of research.

"No, but I am a 'Star Trek' fan," he answered with a smile.

"So, do you like the new 'Star Wars'?" Scott asked Cheryl Costa, a writer from New York who tracks UFOs.

"I loved the new 'Star Wars'! I saw it last night at Disney Springs," she told Scott.

 "So, could ET feasibly have phoned home?" Scott asked Morgan Beall. 

"What? No," he responded.

 'So, you a Kirk man or a Picard man?" Scott asked Rich Hoffman, who describes himself as an IT strategic planner for the Army.   

"Oh, I like Kirk. I go back quite a ways," Hoffman answered.

"Area 51, what is it?" Scott asked.

"I've always felt Area 51 was nothing more than an Air Force ground. Has nothing to do with aliens," Hoffman told Scott.

It takes a little bit, but Scott moves beyond the sci-fi chats into what MUFON studies -- things like tracking the number of UFO sightings globally.

While Cheryl Costa is a writer and UFO tracker now, she says she spent 32 years in the aerospace field.

"(In) 2012, someone published an article that said that UFOs have been on the decline since the 80s, and maybe they were all an urban legend. And that didn't sound right," said Costa. There's a standard formula for breaking these things down, maybe only about 20 percent are what they call the exotic stuff."

'That would be something from other worlds?" Scott asked.

 "Perhaps, other worlds or other dimensions," Costa answered. "We're not sure where they come from."

Since Costa tracks UFO sightings, Scott asked her for sightings in our area. According to Costa's research, in the past 15 years in Florida, there have been 7,787 UFO sightings across the state. Locally, Duval County had 258, St. Johns County had 111 and Clay County had 48.

Scott said one of the things that lamented at the conference was the difficulty in getting the news media to cover it. MUFON said it has had some success with local media in the past, but with the national media, it can't get coverage.

From what Scott can tell, he and his photographer, Travis Anthony, are the only media at this Orlando event. So, at a briefing for the news media -- with a dozen or so experts gathered for a panel -- Scott is the only one there to really ask questions.

He speaks with many of them, including Rich Hoffman. He told Scott there are a lot of unexplained UFO sightings that he's personally investigated for almost half a century, but add most are explainable.

"You'll get reports from planets, Jupiter.  Depending on time of evening, you get satellites. Not as much now.  The International Space Station when it goes across, is a very fast moving satellite," explained Hoffman.

But Hoffman told Scott something others at the conference also said to Scott: They struggle to get the scientific community to take them seriously. In fact, they often hear from UFO believers, but in hushed tones or in hallways after meetings, when no one is around to listen.

"No one wants to go on the record," said Hoffman. "There's a lot of social pressure. I just got a case today from an individual who said, 'Look, I saw something. I'm 78 years old, I told my wife, they think I'm a nut.'"

Kathleen Marden is also at the MUFON convention. She wrote the book "Captured." She told Scott it's the story of her aunt and uncle's close encounter, when a UFO hovered above their car.

"Betty and Barney had gone on brief vacation to Niagara Falls in Montreal, Canada, in 1961," she explained. "He and Betty heard a series of buzzing sounds that seemed to be striking the trunk of the vehicle, caused the vehicle to vibrate and a tingling through their bodies. The next thing they knew, they were 35 miles south of previous location and had very little memory of what happened in the interim."

These are the kinds of tales that make skeptic scoff.

 "Rarely is it taken serious," Beall said.

But they said we need to keep an eye on what's going on in the sky.

"Whether the government keeps an eye on UFOs, I think they have to by definition.  Any object that shows up on radar is unidentified, so they have to," said Powell.

While Scott leaves the convention wondering what's really out there, he gets one final laugh and smile.

"Well, thank you, Rich. I hope you live long and prosper," said Scott.

"Thank you," Hoffman said, laughing, shaking Scott's hand.

It's been years since MUFON has met in Florida, and they likely won't be back for a while. Organizers move this event to different locations every year.

This story is part of an occasional series looking at the Flint-area's involvement in prominent federal investigations, which are highlighted in the Federal Bureau of Investigation's online "Vault." 

GRAND BLANC, MI - Something possibly in the Flint-area's nighttime skies caught the interest of federal authorities in 1960. 

A Grand Blanc pizzeria owner claimed to photograph a flying saucer in 1960, and shared his discovery with federal officials.

The incident was documented in a trove of information made public in the Federal Bureau of Investigation's online "Vault." The Vault is the FBI's library of documents that have been released through Freedom of Information Act requests and detail some of the most-prominent figures and controversial investigations in the bureau's history. 

Documents included in the release identified Joseph Perry as the owner Perry's Pizza Grill in Grand Blanc. Perry, then 44, was an amateur photographer who liked to take pictures of the moon through his big homemade telescope, according to the documents.

About 1 a.m. early one February day, Perry said he made a color photo where an unidentified flying object can be seen against the moon, according to a story in The Flint Journal that was published March 27, 1960.

Perry contacted the Detroit office of the FBI about the suspected UFO captured in the photograph, according to a letter from then-FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover to the Office of Special Investigations with the Air Force.

"He said that when blown up, this object is flat on the bottom, is oval shaped, and appears to have a fluorescent glow around the entire object, and that it is apparently moving as it has a vapor trail running behind it," the internal FBI memo said.

Perry said he took the photo using a 35 mm Retna German camera with Super Ansco Color film and took the pictures through his homemade telescope that was set at between 350-400 power, the FBI memo said.

After a story about Perry's UFO photograph was published by the Detroit Times, the Grand Blanc pizza-maker wrote President Dwight Eisenhower.

"Quoting from a letter of March 14 from Major Donald E. Kehoe, 'From past experience with photographic evidence, we consider it unlikely that you will ever see your picture again,'" Perry wrote to the president on March 21, 1960. "I would like the assurance that this colored transparency will be returned to me within a short time, as it would be financially profitable in the pursuit of my hobby, (cameras and equipment)."

Perry told the FBI he received more than 50 letters and phone calls asking to see the photo.

Ultimately, federal authorities returned the picture.

The Air Force gave Perry a letter when it returned the photo "explaining that what appears to be a flying object in this slide is actually a part of the negative which was not properly developed," according to an FBI memo. 

The cache of information included letters and documents from to people from Seattle, Wash., to New Iberia, Louisiana.

There are hundreds of pages detailing alleged UFO sightings throughout the country, asking about the existence of and other info about flying saucers included in the FBI documents.

Florida fireball sparked fears and misleading claims about alien invasion

The Florida fireball is not an exploding alien spacecraft. It is a rock from somewhere in the Universe.

As internet giants Facebook and Google begin their repression of fake news, the search giant’s news section itself has been showing false articles, or reports with misleading titles, about the fireball that flared up in the air above the state of Florida, United States.

A couple or more websites are reporting that the meteor that exploded above the Southeast United States is a sign of an alien invasion, citing earlier reports of seen UFOs around the world. Some even added that the rock has shown unusual movements, thus confirming their theory that “the government is hiding the truth about aliens.”

No. the Florida fireball is not an alien spacecraft, nor a visiting UFO from an advanced alien civilization somewhere.

A fireball is a large bright meteor, and it lit up as it entered the Earth, a planet which has a thick atmosphere.

In case you missed some of your Elementary science classes, here’s a concise explanation from the Astronomical League: rocks from space glow or light up when hitting the Earth because of tremendous friction that causes the rock or rocks to produce light and to ultimately disintegrate before reaching the Earth’s ground.

Apparently, some rocks are large enough to survive the friction with the atmosphere, and these bodies could be destructive. Some smaller bodies are also dangerous even after melting in the air because they can create a sonic boom, or a shock wave. For instance, the Chelyabinsk meteor that exploded over Southwest Russia.

According to the American Meteor Society, or AMS, a group which monitors such events, the Florida fireball event on November 21st, 2016 around 11:15pm, generated over 150 calls with concentration of reports from Tampa. Its initial finding suggests that the meteor travelled from Southeast to the Northwest before disintegrating on the sea East of Anna Maria Island.

The fireball was so bright that people in Northern Florida, even as far as Georgia and Alabama, also reported the event.

Videos showing the Florida fireball also surfaced online and was compiled by the AMS. See it below this article. The video montage as of this writing attracted over sixteen thousand views.

Some witnesses also shared their stories on the AMS website.

A commenter named Anne said:

“We were driving south on 75 at that time, between Sumterville & Wildwood on the way to Tampa. All of a sudden not more than 20 feet in front of me, I saw a bright light. (At first) I thought of fireworks, then saw the center which was as large as a watermelon & the glowing gas around it. I came to a dead halt, thought it was going to hit us. It landed on the side of the road near a light pole. (Have) no time to get the phone camera on. It was the most spectacular thing I have ever seen.”

Another witness, she said her name is Deborah, added that the fireball was “unbelievably beautiful.”

“Driving on Interstate 75 headed south it was five miles before the Sun City Ruskin exit sign. Both myself and brother saw it. This was just awesome looked like you could just reach out and catch it. It was that close,” she said.

UFO or real aliens? Chinese astronaut says he heard mysterious knocks in space

Strange sounds during space flight experienced by Chinese astronauts have come up as interesting sidebars to mushrooming rumours about alien life and UFOs. Yang Liwei, China's first astronaut, revealed in a recent interview that he heard a mysterious knock - like a wooden hammer hitting an iron bucket, during his flight in space in 2003.

The Astronaut said he was baffled by the sound which appeared suddenly without any reason, reported Xinhua news agency, citing China Central Television. "A non-causal situation I have met in space is a knock that appeared from time to time," said Yang. 

He further said that "It neither came from outside nor inside the spaceship, but sounded like someone is knocking the body of the spaceship just as knocking an iron bucket with a wooden hammer."

It was also reported that the astronaut, who is a major general now, mustered the courage and went to inspect the porthole. However, he did not find anything that could have possibly made the sound.

What is more shocking is that it is not only Yang who heard the sound. Spaceflight mission Shenzhou 6 and Shenzhou 7 astronauts have also heard the sound but even they failed to come up with any possible explanation.

"Before entering space, I have told them that the sound is a normal phenomenon, so there is no need to worry," said the astronaut.

Yang did not give up hope of finding the source of the noise and asked around technicians about the mysterious sound once he returned to earth. He even tried to explain the sound with instruments, however, he said that he neither could recreate the sound nor heard the exact sound again.

Yang Liwe,i who was born in Liaoning province's Suizhong County in 1965, became the first person sent into space by the Chinese space program in 2003.

Researchers from the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, the University of Tokyo and Japan's AstroBiology Center used the Okayama 188-cm telescope in Japan to observe the planet K2-3d, located 150 light-years away, as it passed in front of its star. The measurement marks the first time the potentially habitable planet was measured from Earth.

A potentially Earth-like planet circles a bright star 150 light-years away, casting a shadow tracked from space — and now from Earth, too.

The planet, called K2-3d, was originally seen crossing in front of its star by NASA's Kepler space telescope during that instrument's ongoing K2 mission. Researchers brought the Okayama Astrophysical Observatory's 188-centimeter (6 feet) telescope to bear on the speck to fine-tune their understanding of the exoplanet's orbit down to a precision of 18 seconds, according to new research. 

Using this first-ever Earth-based measurement of the planet, the researchers predicted when the planet will cross its star in 2018, when the newly complete James Webb Space Telescope should be able to watch carefully and analyze the planet's atmosphere for potential signs of life or habitability. K2-3d is about 1.5 times the size of Earth and orbits a star half the size of the sun every 45 days. The exoplanet circles closer to its star than Earth does around the sun — one-fifth the Earth-sun distance — but because this is a cooler star, the planet should rest at an Earth-like temperature that could host liquid water, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan researchers said in a statement. That space around a given star is known as the habitable zonebecause it has the potential to support life similar to that found on Earth.

Kepler discovered the planet based on the star's slight dimming as the planet passed in front, from the telescope's perspective — a process of discovery called the transit method. Because Kepler's K2 mission examines patches of the sky for only around 80 days each, researchers could observe K2-3d crossing the star just twice. But the planet is closer to Earth and has a brighter host star than most of the other potentially habitable planets discovered by Kepler, researchers said in the statement, so K2-3d was worth a second glance. NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope observed two more transits, further increasing what researchers knew about the planet's orbit.

K2-3d's star is much brighter than those of other transiting planets in the habitable zone spotted by Kepler, making this planet a good candidate for further examination. Along with Kepler planets and planet candidates, represented by the black and white circles, the chart shows two Earth-size planets located 40 light-years away and observed by a ground-based telescope.

Each transit presents a chance to learn more about K2-3d, and this new work allows researchers to forecast when those transits will occur. Upcoming large-scale telescopes like the James Webb Telescope will be able to analyze the starlight shining through the planet's atmosphere during a transit. They will thus be able to detect molecules like oxygen that can indicate the potential existence of life.

The new work was described Nov. 21 in The Astronomical Journal.

The Impending Alien Invasion of the Earth

Many speculate that this is where the Pope will make his move to announce his “one religion initiative” and further elaborate on his belief that mankind is about to be contacted by telepathic aliens (his words, not mine). In an interview with Famiglia Cristiana, the Pope stated that he wanted to found an international body of religions under one central authority, “An United Nations of religion“.

Operation Blue Beam

For decades, NASA has developed space based weapons systems designed to penetrate every aspect of our lives and this plan is labeled as Operation Blue Beam.

The Blue Beam Project has four different steps in order to implement a new age religion, along with the roll out of a fake Antichrist at its head. Oh, I believe that we will see an Anti-Christ, but this will not be it. We must remember that the new age religion is the very foundation for the new world government, without which religion the dictatorship of the New World Order is completely impossible.

Phase 1
The first step in the NASA Blue Beam Project concerns the breakdown of all archaeological knowledge. We will see more and more fake discoveries of previous alien contact, where these new discoveries will finally explain to all people the error of all fundamental religious doctrines.

This new false doctrine will be used to make all nations believe that their religious doctrines have been misguided for centuries. Psychological preparations for that first step have already been implemented with such things as the Star Trek TV series,  the 2001 A Space Odyssey film , X Files, Falling Skies, the TV series V, and movies such as Independence Day, and District 9. All of this constitutes the psychological conditioning designed to promote a paradigm shift designed to get the public to accept an “alien” existence.

Phase 2
The second part of this deception is creating 3D holograms, sound and laser projections which will give way to several holographic images. As Steve Quayle and I discussed in our most recent interview, the HAARP type of technology now exists where entire battlefields can be projected and nobody would be the widers because, under these circumstances, nobody could distinguish fact from fiction.

Phase 3

Nearly a generation ago, Nick Begich demonstrated to the European Parliament how Project HAARP could produce fake voices inside the heads of the members of Parliament in what is known as Voice to Skull technology.

Using ELF waves, HAARP can be directly projected into the brain, causing the brain to receive messages, words, and instructions HAARP can provide a way to wipe out communications over a large area, while keeping the military’s own communications systems working. HAARP can also be used for mind control.

Phase 4

Phase 4 culminates with mankind’s shared belief from the Great Deception, than an alien invasion is either under way, or is imminent and the only means of salvation is for a God-like figure, a holographic (i.e. a one-world religion God) will step in and “save” humanity. This will mark the beginning of a one-world government and a single Pagan religion like the one being called for the present Pope.

In this final  phase of the plan, it will be made clear to the people that an alien invasion is imminent and the consolidation of government, religion, military and economic institutions will be “needed” for mankind to survive

Operation Blue Beam has some basis of support from prominent elites.

Dr. Carol Rosin and Wernher Von Braun

Dr. Rosin recounts her four year association with Von Braun, and is she is quick to point out that he predicted that mankind would have a series of “boogey men” designed to manipulate mankind on the way to a New World Order.

First, Von Braun said we would fear the Russians followed by terrorists and then we would fear asteroids and then, finally, mankind would be manipulated into believing that the earth was going to be attacked by aliens. The end game from this reign of terror would be planetary unification.

Hillary Clinton and the UFO Question

Hillary Clinton was viewed at the Rockefeller Ranch holding a book by Paul Davies regarding the implications of extraterrestrial life.

Interestingly, Vince Foster, friend and advisor to President Clinton, was tasked with two missions upon Bill Clinton’s election. First, find out who killed JFK. Secondly, find out the truth behind the alien question. Foster, as all will recall, committed “suicide” under some very mysterious circumstances.

Hundreds of Giant UFOs Orbiting Our Sun, NASA/SOHO Images Confirm. Nov 29, 2016, UFO Sighting News.

While looking over some SOHO images I decided to enlarge some of the UFOs in the photo. Now please know, the UFOs in each photo are different because the sun is rotating, and there are a lot of moon size and earth size UFOs around our sun. 

Back about 10 years ago, two Russian scientists announced that they have found hundreds of UFOs orbiting Earths sun at any given moment in time. That these UFOs can increase and decrease speeds for no reason, and that they can make sudden right turns at speeds that should be impossible, especially for a moon size UFO. Now, are these unmanned giant drones sent to get energy for planets far away? I would say yes, but they don't have to be unmanned if their technology can protect them from the incredible heat.

CIA DOCUMENT CONFIRMS REALITY OF HUMANS WITH ‘SPECIAL ABILITIES’ ABLE TO DO ‘IMPOSSIBLE’ THINGS

Cases of mind influencing matter have been reported throughout history and across many cultures, more specifically in regard to ‘supernormal’ abilities which include telepathy, psychokinesis, and other phenomena that lie within the realms of parapsychology. This is evident in ancient literature, from the Vedic texts and the yoga sutras, to Jesus, Moses, Milarepa,  Mohammed and more.

Modern day evidence is suggesting that these abilities are much more than folklore.

Fast forward to today and scientists have been exploring the mind/matter relationship for more than a century. We have established that consciousness, or factors associated with consciousness, do in fact have observable effects on what we call the physical, material world, albeit very small effects.

It’s important to note that these effects aren’t always seen by the observable eye, but they are known at the quantum level.

The most commonly used experiment to illustrate the connection between consciousness and our physical reality is the quantum double slit experiment, which shows that observation “not only disturbs what has to be measured, they produce it.”  (source)

At the end of the day, our pioneering physicists, as Max Planck (he originated quantum theory) said, regard consciousness as “fundamental” and matter as “derivative from consciousness.”

Eugene  Wigner, a physicist and mathematician sat that “it was not possible to formulate the laws of quantum mechanics in a fully consistent way without reference to consciousness.”  (source)

The CIA Document

The document is titled “Chronology of Recent Interest in Exceptional Functions of The Human Body in the People’s Republic of China.” In the document, it outlines the Chinese governments’ interest in parapsychology (remote viewing, telepathy, psychokinesis, etc). The US government also openly had, and probably still does, an interest in parapsychology  which is most evident within their Stargateprogram.

That program lasted more than two decades before the public became aware of it.

Here is another one titled “Research into Paranormal Ability To Break Through Spatial Barriers.”  that touches upon the same thing. This is elaborated on later in the article.

This particular document, which was declassified through a Freedom of Information Act request (FOIA), outlines specific people with very special abilities and how they’ve been studied by thousands of scientists and governments around the world for a very long time.

The document is on the CIA website, but only seems to be accessible from the Internet Archives, a San Francisco–based nonprofit digital library with the stated mission of “universal access to all knowledge.”

These facts were also outlined in a declassified US Air Force report on teleportation, which was made available through the Federation of American Scientists.

Below is a brief outline of the document:

• In 1979, a major Chinese science journal, Ziran Zachi (Nature Journal), carried a report on “non-visual pattern recognition” in which numerous accounts of exceptional human body function were confirmed. As a result, an unofficial preliminary organization to study this type of thing under the watch of Nature Journal

• In 1980, the Journal and the Chinese Human Body Science Association held a parapsychology (remote viewing, telepathy, psychokinesis, clairvoyance and more) conference in Shanghai with participants from over 20 research institutes and universities

• In 1981, over 100 centres to study children with purported exceptional abilities and mental capabilities were formed with the cooperation of more than 100 formally trained scholars

• In 1982, the Chinese Academy of Sciences sponsored a public hearing in Beijing that more than 4000 scholars attended regarding cases of parapsychological  abilities within humans. They called for “fair but  strictly controlled” tests to lead to a final judgement

The document outlines how many of these scholars agreed that the scientific evidence for the ‘paranormal’ was not sufficient enough to make any conclusions. The next point is arguably the most important one disclosed in the document.

• In April of 1982, a joint trial was arranged by the Party’s National Committee of Science at Beijing Teacher’s College. Proponents of both sides attended. The results were mostly negative, with the exception of a few, one of them being Zhang Baosheng

After this happened, two Chinese scientists, Chen Hsin and Mei Lei, gave a speech on it at the joint convention of the Parapsychological Association and the Society for Psychical Research held at Cambridge University.

Shortly after that in 1983, “a series of PK experiments with the subject Zhang Baosheng were conducted by 19 researchers led by Prof. Lin Shuhang of the physics department of Beijing Teachers college.”

He was able to do some special things, which is elaborated on later in the the article.

After this become known, as written in the document,  “in 1984, Zhang Baosheng became a full-time subject of the military-run psi research team.”

What Was Zhang Baosheng Able To Do? 

One of Zhang’s accomplishments involved moving sealed objects in and out of sealed containers.

Lin Shuhuang, as mentioned above who is from the physics department of Beijing Teacher’s College, studied this man for six months and described experiments where small pieces of paper were placed in a sealed test tube.

After five minutes, with scientists observing and video taping from various angles, the pieces of paper somehow appeared outside the tube despite the fact that the test tube was still sealed and undamaged.

He went on to do the same thing with other small objects like paper clips and even live insects.

In 1987, the researchers at the Institute of Space-Medico Engineering, also mentioned in the CIA document earlier in the article, made public a fraction of their work in the form of a film showcasing their work and what they had accomplished.

Another release (about Zhang) from the CIA (Research Into Paranormal Ability To Break Through Spatial Barriers) states:

A wooden cabinet 120 by 180 by 60 centimeters was used as a sealed container. Sheets of papers and boards with one  of a kind markings were used as the target objects and placed inside the cabinet on the upper shelf. Without damaging the cabinet or opening the door, the person with ESP was able to remove the target objets and also was able to put them back inside. This demonstrates that even when using especially large container it is possible to completely break through spacial barriers, however, the success rate was much lower and was exceptionally difficult. (Source)(source)

Apparently, Zhang Wasn’t the Only One

According to Eric Davis, Ph.D, FBIS, from a declassified US Air Force document obtained via the Federation of American Scientists, Shuhuang reported that ‘gifted children’ were responsible for the teleportation of small, physical objects from one place to another. Some of these objects included watches, horseflies, other insects, radio micro-transmitters, photosensitive paper and more. The participants never touched the objects beforehand. The experiments were done under both blind and double-blind conditions and the researches involved came from various colleges and sectors of the Department of Defense. This is an exceptional case because it was deemed necessary that an unclassified Intelligence Information Report be prepared for public viewing. According to Dr. Dean Radin, Chief Scientists at the Institute of Noetic Sciences conducted an experiment involving mental teleportation of bits of paper out of a sealed plastic film container. This was documented in a report published in 2010 by retired research chemist Dong Shen. What’s even more fascinating is that these methods were taught to others and the success rate was 40 percent.

This information comes via one of his books, Supernormal.

Dean Radin, the Chief Scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences, states:

“Evaluating the details and credibility of these studies have been difficult because many of the papers appear only in Chinese. The techniques have not yet been reported outside of China, and the experimental methods employed in conducting such tests do not appear to be as rigorously controlled as compared to typical Western methods…”

According to Eric Davis, however,

“The results of the Chinese Teleportation experiments can simply be explained as a human consciousness phenomenon that somehow acts to move or rotate test specimens through a 4th spacial dimension, so that specimens are able to penetrate the solid walls/barriers of their containers without physically breaching them.”

Another great example comes from a  study published in the American Journal of Chinese Medicine, as seen in the the US National Library of Medicine. The stuy demonstrated that a woman with special abilities was and is still able to accelerate the germination of specific seeds for the purposes of developing a more robust seed stock.  As the study states:

Chulin Sun is a woman with exceptional powers (Shen and Sun, 1996, 1998; Sun, 1998). A member of the Chinese Somatic Science Research Institute, she is a practitioner of Waiqi. Waiqi is a type of qigong that teaches the practitioner to bring the qi energy of traditional Chinese medicine under the control of the mind. Chulin Sun can induce plant seeds to grow shoots and roots several cm long within 20 min using mentally projected qi energy (Fig. 1). This has been demonstrated on more than 180 different occasions at universities as well as science and research institutions in China (including Taiwan and Hong Kong) as well as other countries (e.g., Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, etc.) (Ge et al., 1998; Qin et al., 1998; Lee et al., 1999). We took part in and repeated the qi germination experiments seven times, and five of them succeeded (Ge et al., 1998). This remarkable effect on seed development has drawn widespread attention (Tompkins and Bird, 1973; Lee, 1998), but the biological mechanisms that underlie this phenomenon are unknown.(source)

Pretty remarkable isn’t it? How does Sun do it? Apparently, she enters into a deep, trance-like state and from this place, she is able to advance the time required for sprouting dry seeds from their usual 3 to 4 days to 20 minutes, generating a sprout growth of 3-4 inches. After a genetic analysis, scientists confirmed this to be the case, hence, the using of the word “rapid” in the title.

The abstract of the study also states,

It was thought preliminarily that qi energy changed the structure of a germination-correlated gene site speeding up expression and advancing it in time.

Qi is believed to be everywhere on Earth; when you’re healthy, Qi is flowing freely through you, whereas when you’re unhealthy, you either have a blockage from Qi or your “Qi tank” is low. Perhaps Sun has learned how to harness universal energy, allow her to essentially speed up the growth process of the plants. This would make sense if you believe in the concept of oneness, that we are all fundamentally connected to one another including the plant life around us.

Among the most marvelous, most frightening and certainly most unbelievable possibilities suggested by psychic folklore is that human beings may be able to exert an observable influence upon the physical world — simply through the power of conscious intention; or unconscious intention, or; by some accounts, through the assistance of spiritual intelligences; 0r as a result of a mysterious principle known as synchronicity. Some scholars – such as Stephen Braude, professor of philosophy at the University of Maryland — take such reports very seriously, claiming that no honest person can examine the case study reports and easily dismiss them.

Regardless of whether or not you believe any of these people possess the aforementioned ‘superhuman’ capabilities, this subject is clearly worth studying. If this didn’t merit further research, do you really think government organizations would be studying these people and trying to hide these programs from you?

Which brings me to my next point.

What Does This Tell Us?

These report, among many others, clearly proves that there are cases of individuals with ‘supernormal’ abilities and that the CIA is well aware of them and has further researched this subject.

These revelations prove that not only do these ‘super-humans’ exist, but mainstream science cannot further investigate parapsychology and refuses to fund the research and even shuns it. However, this subject is still heavily studied by the secretive military industrial complex.

Think about that for a second.

For example, the report states that:

“The decision was announced by Hu Yaobang, the Party’s General Secretary. Exceptional functions of the human body was rejected as an approved subject of scientific research, but a minority group of scientists was to be allowed to continue their research and report it in an internally circulated publication for the consideration of interested scientists. The media were requested not to publish on the topic. Formal university research and government funding was halted.” 

After you read the above quote, then ask yourself, why did Zhang Baosheng become “a full-time subject of the military-run psi research team”?   Why do they get to do all of the research and receive all of the funding?

Clearly this topic is taken very seriously within these programs, but why the ridicule within mainstream science then?

The cutting of these programs is not because there is no interest, but because that interest lies in the world of secrecy, otherwise known as the Black Budget.

World of Secrecy

In the United States, the Stargate Program was a great example of a Special Access Black Budget Program (SAPs). This means that all of the information and findings within these programs remains secret and unknown to the mainstream world.

From these (SAPS) we have unacknowledged and waived SAPs. These programs do not exist publicly, but they do indeed exist. They are commonly referred to as ‘deep black programs.’ A 1997 US Senate report described them as “so sensitive that they are exempt from standard reporting requirements to the Congress.” (source)

There is a lot of evidence to suggest that these programs are not using billions of dollars, but trillions of dollars that are completely unaccounted for in the books. Here is a statement given by Canada’s former Minister of National Defence, Paul Hellyer, in 2008:

It is ironic that the U.S. would begin a devastating war, allegedly in search of weapons of mass destruction when the most worrisome developments in this field are occurring in your own backyard.  It is ironic that the U.S. should be fighting monstrously expensive wars  allegedly to bring democracy to those countries, when it itself can no longer claim to be called a democracy when trillions, and I mean thousands of billions of dollars have been spent on projects which both congress and the commander in chief no nothing about. We are talking about large amounts of unaccounted-for money going into programs we know nothing about. There have been several congressional inquiries that have noted billions, and even trillions of dollars that have gone missing from the federal reserve system.

European Mars Lander Crash Caused by 1-Second Glitch: ESA

Here's how ESA's Schiaparelli Mars entry, descent and landing experiment should have worked. Instead, an error in its inertial measurement unit infected its navigation system and caused the onboard computer to act as though it had already landed. In fact it was still 3.7 kilometers above the Mars surface.

PARIS — The European Space Agency (ESA) on Nov. 23 said its Schiaparelli lander’s crash landing on Mars on Oct. 19 followed an unexplained saturation of its inertial measurement unit (IMU), which delivered bad data to the lander’s computer and forced a premature release of its parachute.

Polluted by the IMU data, the lander’s computer apparently thought it had either already landed or was just about to land. The parachute system was released, the braking thrusters were fired only briefly and the on-ground systems were activated.

Instead of being on the ground, Schiaparelli was still 2.3 miles (3.7 kilometers) above the Mars surface. It crashed, but not before delivering what ESA officials say is a wealth of data on entry into the Mars atmosphere, the functioning and release of the heat shield and the deployment of the parachute — all of which went according to plan. Awaiting a December go-ahead for ExoMars 2020

Schiaparelli was never intended to survive more than a few days on the Mars surface, but the crash-and-die scenario has nonetheless made for bad press in Europe, raising concern that ESA governments might struggle to find the 300 million euros ($330 million) needed to finish funding a 2020 mission with Russia.

That mission is the second half of the ExoMars program. The first half’s main component is the Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO), which was successfully placed into Mars orbit and is functioning well. It will begin a series of maneuvers to reach is operational orbit at the end of 2017.

In addition to taking readings from the Mars atmosphere, the orbiter will be used to relay data from the European-built rover vehicle that is the showcase payload for the 2020 mission, to be launched by Russia. Russia is providing a landing package for that mission.

ESA governments are scheduled to meet Dec. 1-2 in Lucerne, Switzerland, to decide on a three- to five-year spending package covering most of the agency’s programs. But ExoMars will be one of the hot topics, as not all member states are eager to invest more in it.

Government officials said ESA is in fact missing about 400 million euros but would ask its member states for 300 million and find the remaining funds from within ESA's existing budget. It was not clear where those funds would be found.

The Italian Space Agency (ASI), which is ExoMars’ lead sponsor at ESA, has said the fate of the Schiaparelli lander has not dimmed its enthusiasm for ExoMars and that it would finance its expected 40 percent of the ExoMars package.

"ExoMars is extremely important for European science and exploration," ASI President Roberto Battiston said in a Nov. 23 statement. "Together with all the participating states in the program, we will work towards the successful completion of the second ExoMars mission."

The Russian space agency, Roscosmos, has also said it sees no reason to scrap the 2020 mission just because of a computer error that tarnished the lander mission’s last moments.

A one-second glitch and a 3,700-meter freefall

In its Nov. 23 statement, ESA said the saturation reading from Schiaparelli’s inertial measurement unit lasted only a second but was enough to play havoc with the navigation system.

"[T]he erroneous information generated an estimated altitude that was negative," ESA said. "That is, below ground level. This in turn successively triggered a premature release of the parachute and the back shell, a brief firing of the braking thrusters and finally activation of the on-ground systems as if Schiaparelli had already landed.

"In reality, the vehicle was still at an altitude of around 3.7 kilometers."

ESA said the sequence of events "has been clearly reproduced in computer simulations of the control system’s response to the erroneous information."

ESA’s director of human spaceflight and robotic exploration, David Parker, said in a statement that ExoMars teams are still sifting through the voluminous data harvest from the Schiaparelli mission, and that an external, independent board of inquiry, now being created, would release a final report in early 2017.

Alpha Centauri Gets a New Moniker as 227 Star Names Are Clarified

According to a new official designation by the International Astronomical Union, the neighboring star system Alpha Centauri will be known as "Rigil Kentaurus." "Alpha Centauri" is getting the boot. The longstanding star name has been displaced by its ancient counterpart in a new International Astronomical Union (IAU) catalog that designates 227 official names for different stars in the sky. 

The move was intended to reduce confusion, according to the IAU. For instance, a star like Fomalhaut has at least 30 different names, so it's difficult to figure out what to call it — or even how to spell it. Variations over the years have included Fumalhaut, Fomalhut and even the unusual Fomal'gaut.

The IAU, which is the official arbiter of astronomical names, chose single names to refer to those stars that have historically had many. Some of the decisions may rattle longtime observers, however. For example, the binary star Alpha Centauri, which lies 4.35 light-years from the sun, is now known officially as "Rigil Kentaurus," the ancient name for the system. Neighboring Proxima Centauri — the closest star to the sun, at just 4.22 light-years away — will keep its name, which will make it easier to keep track of the nearest exoplanet to Earth (which is currently known by the name Proxima b.)

In many cases, the names are the same as before; for instance, while Vega is reported to have dozens of different names, "Vega" will stand as the official name, echoing the decisions of star catalogs in the Western Hemisphere for centuries. Official alphanumeric designations for stars, which are used by professional astronomers, will remain the same. 

"Since the IAU is already adopting names for exoplanets and their host stars, it has been seen as necessary to catalogue the names for stars in common use from the past, and to clarify which ones will be official from now on," Eric Mamajek, chair and organizer of the working group, said in a statement.

The decision comes after the IAU's working group on star names began combing the literature in May 2016 to determine which star names would be officially approved. The group favored one-word names as well as those names that had histories in astronomy, culture or the natural world. (Many star names, the IAU noted, have not changed much since the Renaissance and come from Greek, Latin and Arabic roots.)

"The group aims to decide which traditional star names from cultures around the world are the official ones, in order to avoid confusion," the IAU said in the statement. "Some of the most common names for the brightest and most famous stars in the sky had no official spelling, some stars had several names, and identical names were sometimes used for completely different stars altogether."

The full list of the 227 stars is available on the IAU's website. This catalog includes 18 star names that were approved in December 2015, 14 of them proposed and voted on by the public for the NameExoWorlds contest. The approved stellar names will not be available for asteroids, planetary satellites or exoplanets "so as to further reduce confusion," the IAU said of the listing.

Explanations For UFOs

Over the years, many explanations have been put forward to try to ‘solve’ the UFO enigma. Some sound very convincing, and others sound like a science fiction novel gone wrong. Not surprisingly, there never seems to be an answer that satisfies everyone.

At the dawn of ufology the USAF used experts to consider all manner of natural and man-made phenomena that might cause witnesses to think they had seen a UFO. The cases that remained unexplained were (a) regarded as the result of insufficient information being available for an adequate explanation, (b) ignored as implausible, or (c) were the work of hoaxers. The motives for hoaxers can be fame and fortune, social experimentation or simply the enjoyment of baffling people.

Another theory, which conditioned much of the thinking surrounding the US airship wave of 1896–97 and the early years of ufology, was that the UFOs were the product of human inventors working and experimenting in secret. Variations of this idea are that human inventors have been inspired by alien contacts and communications to build UFOs and develop related technology. In recent years ufology has embraced the concept that UFOs allegedly retrieved by the US government have been back-engineered and tested at Area 51.

Sceptics like Tim Printy, the editor of the US online SUNlite UFO newsletter, think that ‘the majority of UFO sightings are misperceptions of man-made and natural events. The remainder that cannot be  readily explained are possibly hoaxes, hallucinations, observations of rare natural phenomena, or misperceptions that have been so distorted in the reporting that identification is extremely difficult.’

Nevertheless, most ufologists believe that there remains a kernel of ‘true’ UFOs, and therefore turn to more exotic or complex concepts to explain them.  The default and most dominant idea – especially in the USA – is that UFOs come from outer space. The extraterrestrial hypothesis (ETH) is far from being a new idea. The idea that life exists beyond our home planet has entertained and intrigued our minds for a long time.

The planet Mars has long been seriously considered as the most likely home of intelligent beings. This idea was given scientific credibility by Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli, who intensively studied the planet in 1877, 1879 and 1881, and produced detailed charts that revealed networks of lines and ‘seas’ across its surface. He termed the long dark lines canali, meaning channels, but when translated into English they were erroneously called ‘canals’. He abandoned his observations in 1890 due to failing eyesight, but other astronomers confirmed the existence of Mars’ distinctive surface features.

In 1893, after studying occult phenomena in Japan, Percival Lowell returned to the USA to set up an observatory at Flagstaff, Arizona. In his book Mars, published two years later, he claimed that the planet is inhabited by intelligent beings, three times larger than we are. Considering that Mars is older than Earth, he postulated that Martian life was superior to our own, and that the canals were evidence that they were still in existence.

Today, of course, we know that his ideas are wrong. Psychoanalyst Charles Hofling asserted that Lowell’s observations were illusory; however, his rigorous use of logic to interpret his data was due to an idée  fixe rather than delusions. When determining which came first, the idée fixe or the illusory observations, Hofling favoured the former, as he thinks Lowell already knew what he would see. Significantly, when Lowell used more powerful telescopes the canals were less visible.

Nonetheless, Mars was regarded as a viable habitat for alien life forms until, in the 1960s, these hopes were dashed when NASA’s Mariner space probes detected high levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in its atmosphere. There is evidence that there was free-flowing water on Mars millions of years ago, which may well have supported living organisms at some point, but so far we have yet to find even the slightest hint of life on Mars, past or present.

In contrast to Mars, and the rest of the universe, Earth is teeming with life. Given that there are about 400 billion stars in our Milky Way galaxy alone, it would be incredible if we were the only pocket of life in this infinitely small sector of the Universe.

Scientists have used radio telescopes to try to detect any signals that might reveal the existence of alien civilisations lurking within our part of the galaxy, but so far there has been a big fat silence. Despite this, SETI (search for extraterrestrial intelligence) research has had a big boost from the discovery in October 1995 of a Hot Jupiter extrasolar planet in the Pegasus constellation, 50 light years away. Since then about 1,000 more extrasolar planets (or exoplanets) have been found, of which a quarter are in the habitable zone of their parent sun. Signs of any chemical signatures or the existence of oxygen in the atmosphere of these planets is currently being investigated to see if they might support any type of life, as we know it. This is a far cry from the aliens and visitors reported by UFO contactees and abductees, but at least it does show that the ETH is a scientifically valid concept.

Ancient Astronaut theories are a logical extension of the ETH. The stories of miraculous events and visions in the Christian Bible and other religious books have been eagerly reinterpreted as being accounts of alien visitations. Ancient structures like the Pyramids and Stonehenge are regarded as being inspired or even created by these Ancient Astronauts, and, as in Stanley Kubrick’s movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, it is thought that they might have boosted our evolution, or even brought us to Earth in the first place. The evidence for this is patchy, and has been plundered from many different historical eras. As Roger Sandell wrote way back in 1973, when the books of Erich von Däniken were extremely popular (especially his Chariots of the Gods?), none of these theories ‘seems capable of producing evidence that at one particular time and place a unique interference with human history took place. Instead we are merely given a jumble of mysteries.’

The PSH

The psycho-sociological hypothesis (PSH) doesn’t have such a ring of authority to it as the ETH, and it is far more complex. It is more highly regarded by European ufologists, and considers UFOs to be created by a combination of psychological and sociological factors.

Psychoanalyst Carl Jung was the first to seriously consider UFO experiences as something more than sightings of spaceships or weather balloons. He regarded them as having a spiritual character that fulfilled the needs of the individual. Yet he also thought they could be solid, material craft from other planets. He hinted that our collective desire for salvation from the skies could bring about the physical manifestation of UFOs and aliens.

Ironically, it was US writer and UFO researcher John Keel who, through his influential book UFOs: Operation Trojan Horse and his many articles in Flying Saucer Review, helped wean a generation of British ufologists away from the ETH. He argued that UFO sightings are shaped and manipulated by the intelligences that control the phenomena. He called these entities ultraterrestrials, who are believed to be able to move up and down the electromagnetic spectrum. By these means they can appear and disappear from our limited human perception of the world.

Jacques Vallée and even J. Allen Hynek came to think that there was more to the subject than solid, physical spacecraft visiting us. In Passport to Magonia, Vallée agreed with Keel that the aliens have been visiting us for thousands of years in different forms, according to our beliefs and expectations. The ‘aliens’ have appeared as demons, fairies, goblins and dragons, as recorded in folklore, and they have travelled in phantom airships (as seen in the 1890s to 1920s), foo fighters (World War Two period) and ghost rockets (post-WW2), before they finally showed off their flying saucers. They seem to anticipate our own technological developments and challenge our notions of reality. According to this concept of ‘cultural tracking’ they seem to have been controlling and goading us throughout history.

In his excellent article Jules Verne and the Great Airship Scare, Ron Miller notes that the descriptions of phantom airships are very similar to the real and fictional aerial inventions of the period. He sums up the situation by stating that all the phantom airship sightings in the USA during 1896 to 1897 ‘could be  either anomalous and amorphous phenomena, simple “bandwaggoning”, or even outright hoaxes. In other words, nothing that we haven’t seen taking place in so many modern UFO reports. Those of a century ago are different only in using 19th century visual references.’

From a sociological perspective, UFOs can highlight and represent wider social concerns. In the Cold War period, for example, they represented the fear of invasion by (literally) an alien army. Abductions in recent years represent our fears of being taken over by cold, anonymous forces that can control every element of our lives.

On a personal, psychological level UFO experiences can help people to articulate deeper subconscious fears or desires.

According to this hypothesis, Hollywood films, TV series, websites, books, magazines and other mass media have a big impact on our perception of UFOs. Peter Rogerson, Britain’s leading thinker on this subject, noted that the UFO mythology was ‘nurtured, not primarily by the absurd UFO cults, but by the professional myth-makers, the comics, films, science fiction writers, even advertisers. The first great contactee came … from Hollywood; in the form of the allegorical science-fiction drama The Day the Earth Stood Still.’

UFO research and investigation itself goes through a number of filters, conditioned by ‘authorised myths’. British researcher Hilary Evans notes that these are ‘a belief or set of beliefs which, despite inadequate scientific evidence for its existence, obtains the sanction of widespread acceptance within the prevailing culture.’ For example, in the case of UFOs the authorised myth is that they are of extraterrestrial origin. This causes UFO witnesses to shape their sightings and experiences in terms of this myth. In turn, ufologists come along and add more evidence to support such claims, by correlating them with similar sightings and by ‘finding’ all types of supporting evidence to back them up.

In this way what starts off as a report of a simple CEI light in the sky can escalate into a full-blown CEIII or CEIV abduction report because the authorized myth triggers unconscious dreams and fantasies related to the expectations of the extraterrestrial hypothesis (ETH).

The main problem with these types of explanation for UFO experiences is that we have to consider a complex interaction between our mental processes – which are subject to illness, misperception, genetic predisposition, intoxication and trauma – and our culture, society, myths, beliefs, peer pressures and preconceptions.

Even the methods by which we use psychology to examine these processes in the pursuit of UFO investigations are conditioned by our culture. In the US there has been far more recourse to using polygraph tests, hypnotic regression and psychiatric or therapeutic counselling than in other countries.

In the British Magonia magazine, which has promoted the PSH since the early 1970s, Anthony Brown lambasted this type of approach to the subject. He claims: ‘The attitude of some sceptics in degrading and impugning the character of the average witness in ufology is a disgrace to the subject and of civilised behaviour to one’s fellow man. The essence of the Psychosocial Hypothesis is of cheapening the witness’s puzzling experience, and questioning their basic honesty as a human being.’

Exotic explanations

No single explanation has satisfied everyone, so perhaps a combination of explanations needs to be considered. You can take your pick’n’mix from this selection:

Living UFOs

Ufologist Trevor Constable pioneered the photography of UFOs using infrared film during the 1960s. He considered UFOs to be biological beings, which live in the sky. As they come closer to Earth they become more visible, and they can fire bolts of lightning to defend themselves. They are invisible to our eyes, but infrared film can capture images of them as they fly above us. Today some ufologists have adapted video cameras to capture infrared images of UFOs.

Virtual reality

UFOs could be holographic or quasi-solid projections from extraterrestrial or extradimensional aliens. Alternatively, our universe is a virtual reality created by aliens. UFOs come from beyond our simulated reality and indicate the falseness of our existence.

Time travelers

UFOs might be visiting us from our future, when time travel has become possible. Alternatively they are time machines created by aliens from other planets or dimensions who are coming from the future or even the past.

Paranormal and occult

Psychic phenomena, ghosts, invisible entities and poltergeists have all been associated with UFO and alien activity. Aliens have been contacted through Ouija boards, séances, mental telepathy and automatic writing. This suggests that the aliens live on the same astral planes as ghosts and other entities, or that they are created by similar psychological factors. Using meditation or even magic, some have tried to bring such mental projections into the real world.

The third realm

Rather than conjuring up UFOs, the third realm hypothesis suggests that they exist independently in a realm that has only been accessible to shamans through mystical means. Harvard professor John Mack claimed that modern science blinkers us from the third realm because it only accepts the reality of the first realm (the mind) and the second realm (the material world). People who experience UFO events glimpse the third realm.

Electronic pollution

Albert Budden put forward the theory that electronic and electrical pollution could affect 20% of the population. This pollution upsets our biochemistry and causes UFO and abduction hallucinations that warn us that our bodies are in danger.

Earth lights

Lights in the sky are caused by strains in the earth’s crust, according to this theory. These lights and related electromagnetic activity have an influence on the temporal lobes of our brains. People sensitive to these influences can experience mood changes, memory loss, rich fantasies and abduction-like experiences.

Plasma balls

The British Ministry of Defence’s Project Condign claimed that rare, short-lived plasma balls in the upper atmosphere could cause pilots to see ‘classic’ flying saucers. They could also create electromagnetic disruption to vehicles and elude radar detection. The report suggested that meteors are involved in their creation by an as yet unknown process.

Conspiracy

It is claimed that the US and other governments know all about the real origin of the aliens, and are in league with them to keep humanity in ignorance of the real situation. This information is suppressed because it could cause mass panics and completely disrupt our existence on this planet. Certainly government agencies have used the UFO mythology to spread disinformation and to hide the testing of aircraft and other highly secret activities. On a similarly sinister note, in the 1950s agencies like the FBI were worried that Communist supporters were using UFO and alien contact stories to undermine democratic values. For this reason they monitored the activities of ufologists and contactees who appeared to be spreading subversive ideas.

Summary

The psycho-sociological hypothesis covers a broad range of phenomena that governs our perceptions. At one end of the scale it can be used to speculate that our own minds can create or perceive ‘real’ aliens and their spacecraft; at the other end the PSH has inclined some ufologists to consider the subject as modern-day folklore. In the light of this, UFOs and the theories surrounding them constitute a UFO mythology, and it is in the realms of psychology and sociology that we should therefore concentrate our research.

Such research is important, because, as John Spencer notes in his book Perspectives: ‘The phenomenon has affected much of our modern society, our culture, our fiction, areas of our religion and much more. It has done this without proof of reality, people’s perception of the world has changed because of the existence of the literature, whether or not there is a basis in reality. This will continue into the future whether there is a foundation in reality or not, so long as people believe something.’

The extraterrestrial hypothesis is more clear-cut and simple. The problem for ETH proponents is finding scientifically valid evidence to back up their claims. The exopolitics movement that has arisen since 2000 assumes the fact that aliens from outer space are visiting us and are in regular contact with our governments. Their evidence relies heavily on rumours and stories from whistleblowers.

As ‘The Pelican’ perceptively notes in Magonia magazine: ‘The notion that the true explanations for sightings that remain unidentified after being investigated by Serious Ufologists is that they are alien craft, [and] is what makes ufology a pseudoscience. It is not just the nuts-and-bolts ETH Serious  Ufologists who are rather flaky, but also those who seek more subtle explanations … all but a very few ufologists do not have a purely objective approach to the subject. And, of course, they usually get away with their dodgy hypotheses and tall stories.’

Certainly, ufologists, whether at the skeptical or believer ends of the spectrum, can easily have a tendency to have ‘dodgy hypotheses’. What is paramount is to look at the evidence itself and to consider the pros and cons of its validity. Unfortunately, many cases are invested with a power that transcends any rational arguments or logical explanations, and they become an established part of the UFO mythology.

What is really needed to confirm the ETH is incontrovertible proof, like an actual flying saucer parked on the White House lawn.

'UFOs: The Secret Evidence'

This 2 hour television programme set out to solve some of the great UFO mysteries, perhaps even provide a catch-all explanation for the whole field of Ufology.  'UFOs: The Secret Evidence' was written and presented by journalist Nick Cook, who has been an aviation editor and aerospace consultant for the world-renowned trade publication "Jane's Defence Weekly".  His impeccable credentials might suggest a rather stuffy approach to the subject, but Nick Cook actually brings with him a down-to-earth, common sense approach which is refreshing.  His stance on UFOs seems open-minded and objective.  He also manages to gain interviews with some very intriguing individuals from the aerospace and intelligence fields.

 

The programme started by asserting that UFO reports began during the Second World War.  This is an incorrect assertion, unfortunately, ignoring a wealth of historical evidence dating back centuries.  Still, it's probably fair to say that the first official military reports on the subject were generated in the 1940s, and that is the focus of Nick's investigation.  He tackled the phenomenon of the 'Foo Fighters' reported by airmen during WWII and, with John Dering (a senior scientist at SARA), considered the possibility that the Nazis were sending up prototype Unmanned Aerial Vehicles which were "reusable"! 

A bizarre technological artefact known as 'the Fly Trap' was visited, and the theory that it was a test-rig for Nazi flying saucers was discussed.  This was in the context of a secret Nazi underground base where derro-like scientists played with glowing bell-shaped devices which seemed to defy gravity.  This was research which led to the death of several scientists, allegedly.

 

Then we moved onto the Roswell incident, via the infamous U.S. defence programme to incorporate Nazi scientists into sensitive research areas (like White Sands Missile Range), known as Operation Paperclip.  The Roswell incident resulted, it was alleged, from a top secret defence programme known as 'Sky Hook', which sent up advanced surveillance balloons.  Its flight path took it over Roswell, and when one crashed the UFO story was sprung to hide the truth about 'Sky Hook' from the Soviets.

 

This is a running theme throughout Nick Cook's thesis.  Whatever the truth behind the wider phenomenon, the subject was used mercilessly by intelligence agencies in the psychological war with the Soviet Union.  This occurred to such an extent that UFOs became part of American culture for a long while; as a propaganda instrument UFOs were unrivalled in their success, it was claimed. Not only that, but the U.S. then used UFO flaps as a means to track the progress of their experimental craft.

 

It all sounds like those clever military intelligence people had their finger on the pulse all along!  This rose-tinted view of UFO history, US of A-style, was backed up by various characters from the Intelligence field interviewed by Nick Cook, who all smiled knowingly as they openly revealed the deepest secrets of military intelligence to the public.  "We suckered you all, you fools!" they arrogantly insinuated.  But this version of history runs against the grain of the U.S. Government's public panic over the subject at the time, as revealed in various memos that have come to light.

 

After the death of the brutal Soviet premier Joseph Stalin, the CIA upped the ante, using UFOs as a propaganda tool to cover up the top secret flights of the U2 spy-plane over the Soviet Union.  It didn't work, of course, because the Soviets shot one down.  One would have expected the UFO phenomenon to stop dead in its tracks at that point.  But, no, on it went, cruelly ignoring the whole CIA/Propaganda theory. 

 

So various other aerospace oddities are wheeled out of their hangers to shock and amaze us.  Like the 'Avro Car', and the 'Silver Bug'.  There is something to be said for the idea that sightings of UFOs at or near sensitive aerospace research establishments might just have something to do with what's going on there.  Policeman Lonnie Zamora might have seen a 'Silver Bug', or a downed prototype Sampler destined for the Moon, next to White Sands, for instance. 

 

The Russians certainly seemed to be well and truly hooked on UFOs, with Andropov ordering the Red Army to watch the skies, which they did dutifully for 13 years.  But the canny Russians would have known that the Americans liked to regularly risk their young pilots on surveillance missions across Soviet territory, despite already having spy satellite technology quite sufficient for the task.  There's more to all this than meets the eye.  Yes, Stealth aircraft undoubtedly contributed to UFO sightings.  But that's not the whole story.

 

And Nick Cook seems to realise that too.  The first hint of that came when watching the uncomfortable reaction of British sceptics Andy Roberts and Dave Clarke to his gentle questioning.  They were not amongst friends, one could judge.  Then his appraisal of the eye-witness account of pilot Tom Hanley, who described the incredible manoeuvring capability of an unidentified flying object darting around his reconnaissance aircraft, seemed to open up greater potentials than the US military dangerously interfering with its own advanced aircraft. 

 

The 1952 flap over Washington D.C. also brought about a pause for thought.  Nick Cook is not a dyed-in-the-wool sceptic by any means.

 

He then tackled subsidiary subjects, like cattle mutilations across stretches of the continental USA.  He concluded that these were covert missions carried out by military agents using helicopters and field-based surgical equipment, to monitor contamination levels of some kind.  It would have been easier to just buy some cattle and then take body parts to the lab for analysis, I'd have thought.  But ten out of ten for style, that's for sure. 

 

Then there was the alien abduction phenomenon, which is a massive subject in its own right.  Nick Cook looked at the Travis Walton case, including an excellent interview with the man himself.  No explanation was forthcoming, except for a generalised gloss over the experiences of the Contactees some years before. Perhaps to try to indict the U.S. Government in human experiments against the will, or knowledge, of the victims involved, was a step too far for Cook.  The U.S. Government's dismissive contempt for the great, impoverished mass of its own people has been clear to see for many years, most recently noted during the Hurricane Katrina debacle.  So it's possible, surely?

 

 

'UFOs: The Secret Evidence" wound up with a look at satellite photographs showing contrails from an unidentified craft which flew halfway across the globe at 8000mph.  'Aurora' was the modern UFO par excellence, it seems.  But however fast these things get, the fact remains that the difficulty with identifying many UFOs lies in their bizarre patterns of manoeuvrability.  If the Nazis created the Foo Fighters back in the 1940s, then why the heck are we still flying around in fixed wing aircraft 60 years later?  It all seems so unlikely.  Yes, UFOs were a wonderful cover story to hide black projects behind, but the black projects in themselves do not completely solve the UFO problem.  Not by a long chalk.  In the end, Nick Cook seemed to agree.
