Extra-terrestrial Life – What The ELITE Don’t Want You To Know!

It is now clear for many of us around the world that we are NOT alone and being visited by sophisticated Beings not of this world.  From the findings that are being announced by leading scientists to admittance off people in the know from a position of authority that Aliens exists (Former Astronauts, Ex Politicians and even Obama!).

But the very unfortunate thing is that the Elite like hiding the truth in plain sight, which is a favourite tactic of the theirs against us all. I suppose the biggest factor working in the elites favour is massive and widespread public incredulity at their schemes, because let’s be honest with ourselves people, the scale of all this is simply unimaginable for the average Joe Bloggs to comprehend, and THIS is what those supposedly in control use to their advantage!

Its time for change against those few that control us!?

To be fair it is very hard to accept that a tiny little group of people, disconnected from all levels or care or compassion, empathy and the rest of humanity, would actively promote war, encourage depopulation and the destruction of our home Planet Earth, but the evidence proves it to the case: from Kissinger’s 1974 Memorandum 200 (depopulation) to the spraying of our skies with toxic metals (geo-engineering).

But please do not worry people, because as bad as this all is, it still has not gone so deep into the rabbit hole as of yet. It is clear for the majority of people around the world watching this clip would have watched this and not given it a second thought and then walked just thinking that the whole thing was a joke. But people this response is EXACTLY the kind of pre-calculated response those supposedly in control want to encourage around the whole ‘Alien’ topic! They do this by hiding truth in plain view of us all by making it all into one big massive joke, or perhaps even turn it into science fiction perhaps some kind of movie which either mocks Aliens or makes them out to be the bad guys! This is all a far more effective strategy at shielding the true reality from a rather sceptical public than mere obfuscation or just a point blank denial. But the Elite need to remember one thing, the people of this world are wakening and people like us who know that we are being lied to, are helping to wake the world!

The people of this world are slowly but surely waking!

This particular theme of hiding truth in plain view of the world’s population can be found everywhere especially in the entertainment industries – kids cartoons, music videos, movies and comedy shows! – and one area which is usually highly used is science fiction. Age old Movies and TV series such as Star Trek and V are a particular way that the elite can release a little pressure but without having to engage in FULL open disclosure. And on the flip side of this It’s also a very cunning way that they can claim some plausible deniability, by explaining away all the evidence and shunning it all as “science fiction”….But indeed what we are being presented with is actually Science FACT!

When looking at movies and hiding hidden ‘truths’ look at even more recent films such as Jupiter Ascending, which has Reptilians in it, Alien Greys in it, Government cover-ups, Galactic rulers etc etc the list goes on….

And whilst the Elite believe that such comical rhetoric can keep the masses of this world in disbelief and ridicule, peoples’ minds may remain closed on a short term basis, but now thanks to technology people can see the truth, ‘Google’ the truth from the palm of their hand without of visiting a library.  But think of the amount of UFO sightings around the world which are being captured daily on peoples HD cameras (everybody has a smartphone now)…..the world is slowly but surely going through an ‘Awakening’ process and people like us at U.I.P and yourselves are helping to speed up this process – the Waking of the Masses!

The truth is in the skies above us!

It is clear, and like most leading politicians, Barrack Obama is an extremely good actor! Just look at his delivery as he says these words below;

“The Aliens won’t let it happen.”

“They [Aliens] exercise strict control over us.”

“I can’t reveal anything.”

“That’s what we’re instructed to say.”

No matter how very hard Obama may try to hide the truth, he can’t hide the truth by acting skills. far too many of us in our millions, perhaps even BILLIONS already KNOW the truth about the Alien Beings presence here on Planet Earth, and guess what Obama and co, that number is only going to increase daily and there is NOTHING you can do to stop this!

Overwhelming Evidence Aliens Do Actually Exist

It’s important that if you actually take the time to properly study eyewitness testimonies, and also listen to visitation/abduction accounts and read the vast amount of declassified military documents on this topic, you will most definitely discover a HUGE amount of evidence which not only confirms the existence of ETs, but also that they have been here for a very long time and have already interacted with humanity – some of these Alien Beings have actually entered into set arrangements with our Governments, but sadly NOT in the best interest of humanity…..purely for greed and ‘control’ of the Elite!

Here is a sample of the thousands of credible sources, many of which come from hardened rational military men, who confirm that aliens do exist among us:

Former Command Sergeant Bob Dean who worked at SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Power Europe), the centre of NATO, who personally had  many  experiences of interacting with Nordic ETs. He reveals that the Shadow Government is deeply involved with ETs in underground facilities (e.g. with the jumproom connecting S4 [Area 51] in Nevada with Pine Gap in Australia) and how there is a big battle between the NWO factions that favour disclosure and the ones that vehemently oppose it.

Veteran Clifford Stone, who had  a personal relationship with a green ET called Korona and has numerous alien tales. Some of these many involved his time in Vietnam where he went on UFO crash recovery missions. He even helped an alien escape from military custody! Stone has publicly stated many times there are  57 alien species already interacting with humanity in some way or another.

ET Contactee Alex Collier, who  has had a long ongoing relationship with evolved beings from the Andromedan Galaxy. Throughout his many video interviews he discusses, in astonishing detail,  the ET presence on Earth, the Reptilian control of our government and institutions, the truth about our Moon, bases on Mars, human treaties signed with evil alien races,  the Government selling us out for greed and technology and many other topics.

Former US military man Phil Schneider, a brave whistleblower who not only encountered alien beings underground, but also got into a gun  fight with them – killing one and wounding another. He was a  geologist, structural engineer and underground tunneling expert who participated in the construction of many deep underground cities and bases in North America. In  his many video presentations  he describes in detail these cities, tunnels and bases, the Government’s secret deal with hostile ETs and advanced alien technology being used by secret US agencies.

ET Contactee Billy Meier, who was one of the first prolific contact stories. Meier was reportedly contacted by an extraterrestrial named Semjase who claimed to be from the Pleiades. She allowed him to take over 1000 clear daytime pictures of her craft and others like it as well as live video – in the 1970s before computers and Photoshop were widespread, so fakery would have been difficult or impossible.

Former US Air Force officer Charles Hall who became familiar with Areas 53 and 54 (called “Dreamland”) and the Dogbone Lake field where the ETs landed their craft. He actually lived with a certain species, which he  describes as tall, thin, with large eyes and transparent hair, and with the ability to dress and look like humans, and to grow again once they get old.

Former US Air Force officer Bill Holden who had many UFO and ET experiences, including several  encounters with alien beings and UFO craft demonstrations. He witnessed 2 Greys in jumpsuits, and a flying double-saucer UFO emerge from water without a splash. He reveals  how relations between aliens and the US government are both on-going and extensive.

Former Canadian Defence Minister Paul Hellyer, A former defence minister has accused world leaders of concealing the presence of aliens. Paul Hellyer, who was a Canadian minister from 1963 to 1967, is now urging world powers to release what he believes to be hidden data on UFOs. ‘Much of the media won’t touch [the documents]’, he said during a keynote speech at the Disclosure Canada Tour at the University of Calgary. 

There are MANY cases of other ET contacts which include;

Simon Parkes, Arizona Wilder, Whitley Strieber, Mark Richards, Maurizio Cavallo, Ernie Sears, Bonnie Meyer, Alec Newald, Jonathan Reed, James Casbolt, Kim Carlsberg, Douglas Taylor, Travis Walton and  Stan Romanek are also worth investigating, not to mention those who are believed to have seen or worked on UFOs, such as Bob Lazar and U.S. Airforce Captain Robert Salas etc etc etc (probably missing a fair few!).

Researchers Bringing The Truth About ET Reality

There are now numerous credible researchers around the world who have spent their lives studying the ET phenomenon. Take for example Roger Leir, an expert on alien implants; Ann Eller, who worked with the father of UFO and Alien research, Dr. J. Allen Hynek, and who served as Hynek’s personal secretary; and Professor David Jacobs who has fascinating evidence of a disturbing ET agenda of building a hybrid human-alien race. Or, listen to Barbara Lamb, Stan Friedman, Bill Cooper, Mary Rodwell, Timothy Good, Steven Bassett, Steven Greer, Linda Moulton Howe or Philip  Corso.

Another person of particular interest is the late Dr. Karla Turner, who investigated the ET abduction phenomenon for decades and collected massive testimonial evidence of the existence of grey and reptilian ETs. Many people have said that she was murdered because of the truth she told and the knowledge she knew! These are all brave people risking their life for the TRUTH!

We Have Been Helped

Here is a quote from Dr. Herman Oberth, a NASA Space Scientist, who said this in 1972.  Not much more needs saying after this:

“Today, we cannot produce machines that fly the same as UFOs do. They are flying by means of artificial fields of Gravity. This would explain the sudden changes of directions. Not all ETs are “bad”. Not all are “good”. There are countless species, and motivations within those species, for us to make many generalizations. There is a whole universe of hominoid beings out there waiting for us to end the planetary secrecy and take our place in the galactic community. However, it’s not going to happen until a critical mass can discern the truth, hiding in plain sight.”

One thing is for sure, not all ET Beings are bad and not all are good!(a bit like Human Beings!) It is clear that there are countless, possibly endless amount of species out there in the Infinite Universe, and I guess the different species have their very own motivations for us to make many generalizations.

Out there, in the vastness of ‘unknown’ there is an entire universe of hominoid beings waiting for us to end the planetary secrecy and take our place within the galactic community. But, and it is a big BUT, this is NOT going to happen until a significant mass of this planets population can decipher the truth, which hiding in plain view from us all.

One other thing, it is becoming clear by the sheer amount of UFO sightings being seen around the world (of course some will be hoaxes) that some of the ET’s are potentially trying to force their very own disclosure….Together as one we can force our own Disclosure!

Extremely Hot and Incredibly Close: How Hot Jupiters Defy Theory

As usual, we thought we had it all figured out. See that gas giant over there in the outer solar system? It was born there. It will spend its whole life there, and it will die there. Sure it might wiggle around a bit every few hundred million years — who doesn't? — but, by and large, planets don't move.

Surprise: Planets move. And not just a little. They move a lot. All over the place. In fact, in the early days of a solar system's formation, planets are a little rambunctious: squirrely little toddlers jostling about underfoot. But it wasn't until we started observing planets in other solar systems ("extrasolar planets" or "exoplanets" for the astronomer on the move) that we really noticed this fact.

And it wasn't just any type of exoplanet that kicked off this re-think; it was the hot Jupiters. Imagine: a planet more massive than the largest one in our solar system and 10 times warmer, a monstrous beast of hydrogen and other elements, complete with swirling bands of gas and a rich, dynamic atmosphere, orbiting closer its star than Mercury orbits the sun. In some solar systems, such a planet orbits so quickly that its year is shorter than the Earth's day. That means these worlds can whip around their parent stars in hours. The physics involved can reduce the most hardened scientist to tears.

When astronomers spotted the first hot Jupiter (51 Pegasi b, the first exoplanet to be found around a sunlike star, no less), the reaction was mostly, "Ha ha, mother nature, that's cute. You got us this time, but no more funny business, OK?"

But then another hot Jupiter was found. And another. Then half a dozen more. They went from goofy oddballs to … normalcy. For a while, it started to look like our own solar system was the weird one. Maybe they should just be called "regular Jupiters," and ours re-named a "cold Jupiter?"

Seeing stars — and planets

In retrospect, it's not surprising that astronomers spotted these massive planets living so close to their parent stars. After all, our detection methods are most sensitive to exactly these scenarios.

One method is based on the motion of the parent star itself. Have you ever taunted a dog on a leash, running back and forth? The dog, frantically trying to chase you, runs until the leash stops it. You go the opposite direction, and so does the dog, until "thunk!" and the leash again reaches its limit. 

In this really bad analogy, each planet is taunting its parent sun through gravity. During one part of the planet's year, the world sits at a certain position in the system. Gently, week by week, the planet tries to pull the star over to it, because that's how gravity works. But some time later, the planet finds itself on the opposite side of the system. "No, star, I meant come over here, not over there!" 

Back and forth the star goes, sloshing around — just a tiny bit — it is huge compared to its planets, after all. But with precise-enough measurements, we can detect that wobble by a telltale red- and blue-shifting of the star's emitted light. [Direct Imaging: The Next Big Step in the Hunt for Exoplanets ]

A second powerful method — and nowadays, the method most commonly used to find new planets — is to simply look for distant eclipses. If we get the alignment just right, and stare at enough stars, every once in a while, a planet will cross the face of its parent, ever so slightly dimming the star. Bingo: a transit detection!

Both of those methods will more easily find a planet if it is big, producing a stronger pull from wiggling or a more significant dip in the brightness. 

So these methods will first pick out the massive, close planets, because those will make the strongest, clearest, least-ambiguous signals. And with planets that have fast orbital speeds, you can get more signal bang for your observational buck. 

That led to the initial worry: For a while, it seemed like every exoplanet was a hot Jupiter. Fortunately, as our detection methods improved and we could spot smaller exoplanets, we've learned the galaxy is a mellower place. There are plenty of hot Jupiters, but also plenty of regular Jupiters, and every other kind of planet you can imagine .

NASA giet één jaar zon in schitterende timelapse - HLN.be

VIDEO Hoewel de zon niet altijd zichtbaar is, schijnt ze toch iedere dag. De NASA-ruimtesonde Solar Dynamics Observatory werpt sinds 2010 non-stop haar licht op de ster. De visuele bevindingen van vorig jaar goot de Amerikaanse ruimtevaartorganisatie in een video.

Het resultaat is een schitterende timelapse van minder dan zeven minuten van één jaar zon. Het filmpje werd eerder deze maand door de NASA op YouTube geplaatst. De beelden tonen het bolvormige hemellichaam in extreem ultraviolet licht, een golflengte die het menselijk oog normaal niet kan zien. Het biedt aardbewoners de kans om onder meer gaswolken, explosies van gemagnetiseerd plasma en zonnevlammen van dichtbij te bewonderen.

BIZAR GELUID BOVEN AMSTERDAM ( VIDEO )

Het is enige tijd stil geweest voor wat betreft de vreemde en onverklaarbare geluiden boven Nederland, maar nu is het terug. 

Afgelopen weekend was het raak boven Amsterdam en mensen vragen zich vertwijfeld af wat voor geluid dit kan zijn. 

Via een lezer (dank!) kregen wij onderstaand videobestand opgestuurd, met daarop een wel heel vreemd geluid. 

Hij schrijft onder ander het volgende: 

Het is in Amsterdam Noord gebeurd, vlak bij het vernieuwde winkelcentrum Waterlandplein. 

Zaterdag rond 10:00 uur gebeurde het toen had ik nog niks gefilmd. 

Een uurtje later begon het weer. 

 

Misschien is er een verklaring voor het geluid op de video en mocht iemand het weten dan vernemen we het graag. 

Is er geen verklaring voor te vinden dan kan het onderdeel vormen van de vele vreemde geluiden die wereldwijd worden waargenomen en die volgens ons te maken hebben met de nadering van het mini zonnestelsel Nibiru, waarover we eerder schreven. 

Misschien is er nog een andere aanwijzing. 

Want wij ontvingen nog een email van iemand (dank!) die op dezelfde plek, alleen een dag later op zondagmorgen, ook een ervaring had: 

Ik hoorde om 10:00 keiharde geluiden in de lucht. Ik kwam laat thuis en had weinig geslapen dus ik ging met moeite kijken wat dat geluid was. 

Het leek het uit de lucht te komen. 

Ik ging weer naar bed ondanks dat geluid bleef. Gedurende 10 minuten bleef het een hoge toon houden alsof er een trein in de lucht reed. 

Uur later kwam het weer terug en toen was ik al een beetje wakker en pakte ik me telefoon en liep ik naar de galerij en begon te filmen. 

Voordat ik me telefoon had gepakt zag ik een zilveren vierkant met zwarte puntjes op het object, Het was ongeveer 100 bij 100 meter en was na een paar seconden weer weg. 

Het was zondag om 10:00 uur en om 11:00 uur bij Waterlandplein omgeving. Ik heb veel mensen gesproken die het ook hebben gehoord die het ook niet konden plaatsen. 

Kortom, voorlopig lijkt er sprake van mysterieuze gebeurtenissen in Amsterdam Noord.

Despite the numerous sightings, the phenomenon is still unexamined. What’s more, the media have held the claimers to ridicule. Reports go back as early as 1878, and their number increased, as a growing evidence of the existence of extra-terrestrial life. An image took by a space watcher shows a structured spacecraft in Europe, which is believed to be the 6th largest moon. Space watchers thought that the object was an indication of the existence of alien in the other planet.

The captured photo posted by Secure Team reveals the images on a camera embedded in a 7D-300mm telescopic lens on a tripod. The video shows an image by British man Louis Read sent to the UFO watchers. Louis Read was so amazed at his findings that he sent it to request for a second opinion. According to the film, the extraterrestrial vessel comes close to Jupiter’s moon Europa, but has never been seen until today. People increased the exposure after seeing the unique site. They believed that such object could be a giant alien or just a fleet of strange objects. The mere fact that Jupiter is considered to be made up of gas and ice, Secure Team is very much convinced that extraterrestrial beings exist on Jupiter. What’s more is the ‘under water’ term that plays as a host of the different life forms.

NASA is planning to send a probe out there by traveling as far as Jupiter in their quest for information about the happenings in the Solar System. Currently, they are conducting a series of experiments on Mars.

Watch Mysterious Space Object Seen Hovering Above Earth

An object seems to trail the International Space Station in a video that emerges from Russia. The baffling footage appears to show a piece of debris or spacecraft following the station last month as it orbited the Earth. It was allegedly shot on the ISS cameras while the satellite waited for a supply delivery.

Many have thought the object was a UFO, but others stay skeptical about the video’s authenticity, and the explanation that was given for it.

Some suggested that the short video didn’t have the same quality of the footage from the cameras on the ISS.

Furthermore, the object’s rotation and motion don’t look like an object in orbit. Because of this observation, some suggest the object in the clip is a Russian Soyuz spacecraft, used to transport cosmonauts into space.

Meanwhile, the video quickly went viral, and viewers hotly debated it online. Some think it is a companion ship.

One viewer commented that the debris from the ISS roughly gets the same speed as the object in the video. Most likely, a thermal insulation board, according to the viewer.

Just a few days back, the Cygnus cargo vessel was launched back into space filled with garbage it accumulated during its time with the space station. Once it reached a safe distance from the ISS, its engines were programmed to fire twice, sending it into Earth’s atmosphere. During re-entry, it will burn up in the atmosphere.

The unidentified flying saucer shape was spotted over Newton Abbot in January, and has been described as moving through the skies before vanishing from view.  National newspapers reported that John, from Devon, took thesephotographs of the the shape which had a domed top hovering in the sky. 

John has shared his pictureonline, and described his close encounter with the craft to the Daily Star.  He told them: “I had an incredible sighting on the 19th of January 2016 of a flying saucer. I got a very good look at this alien craft and all I can say is WOW!  “I was sky-watching when I noticed a black object far off in the distance in the direction I was looking. 

“The flying saucer turned back in the direction from where it had come from and then disappeared off into the distance and out of sight.  “The black object got bigger as it got closer. I could clearly see that the object was in fact a flying saucer and I could see a dome on the top of the saucer.”  John spotted the UFO on January 19 at 1.10pm, and says he is certain the shape was an alien craft.

THE SECRET CIA TIME TRAVEL PROGRAM

"Portals appear in many books, movies and video games. Some of them connect distant places, others travel back or forward in time, and the most powerful ones bridge into different dimensions. Most people suppose these gateways exist only in the realm of mysticism or science fiction, but there are some who strongly believe that portals have been opened up in ancient times and, quite possibly, even in the present day. 

 

According to two National Security US Informants, the Department of Defense developed time travel technology over 40 years ago. As early as 1967, the US government was using a fully operational time travel facility built on Tesla-based quantum access. This technology has been used to keep the construction of military installations secret, as well as provide political and economic advantages by way of knowing what the future holds. Some say the CIA confiscated Tesla’s papers on teleportation shortly after his death.

 

 One of these two National Informants, Michael Relfe, is a former member of the US armed forces who claimed he was a member of a top-secret US operation. He was recruited in 1976 and spent the next 20 years helping maintain and expand one of the two or more US colonies on Mars. Those bases served as strategic research points and defense objectives, and in order to preserve their secrecy, they were built in the future. 

 

Relfe said that after serving 20 years on the Mars colony as part of their permanent team, he was age-reversed and sent back in time. He claimed that this was the usual procedure and that staff members would have certain memories blocked or erased before being discharged. 

 

Dr. Andrew D. Basiago was a participant in DARPA’s Project Pegasus (1968-1972) that focused on time travel in the time-space hologram. He claimed that the CIA was actively training groups of gifted American schoolchildren to become the first generation of time-explorers." 

 

 

 

"Children were better suited for this mission for several disturbing reasons. First of all, they were considered ideal candidates due to their clear minds and lack of impressions or experience. The US government was interested in the effects of time travel over young bodies and minds. The adult volunteers usually became insane after several journeys. Fortunately, naive children had little former experience and beliefs that could drive them mad.

 

 Another use for quantum technology was found in political control. According to Dr. Basiago, future persons of interest would be notified early about the roles they were to play in the future. He said that in the early 1970’s in Albuquerque, New Mexico he was present at a lunch at which George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush were informed of their future presidencies. 

 

Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton were also paid visits and in 1982, President Obama was rumored to be approached while still a student at UCLA. To further this claim, there are many first witness accounts from people who attended college with Obama that can attest that he would often get drunk at parties and then claim that he would be the future President of The United States. Was this certainty not based on predisposed knowledge? 

 

Basiago claims that in 1971 he viewed images from the attack on the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001. They had been obtained from the future and brought back for analysis. This implies that the US government knew about 9/11 three decades in advance. 

 

According to the informants and those who support them, this technology is held secret despite being funded by the public. It is also not the first time these missions have been kept declassified because of their immense potential. They say that the people deserve to know what is really going on, the truth about space exploration and the presence of humans on other planets. Teleportation could solve transportation problems worldwide by moving people and goods instantly. It would also immediately help to destroy the current tyrannical power pyramid that is in place.

Here's How It Felt to Discover Gravitational Waves (Kavli Hangout)

When Rainer "Rai" Weiss and colleagues first proposed an audacious experiment to detect ripples in space-time, called gravitational waves, in the late 1970s, they knew the whole endeavor was a long shot. The waves the researchers sought would pull and stretch their detector by mere billionths of a billionth of a meter — a scarcely believable signal to try to extract from nature.

Now, four decades later, millions of people worldwide have read about the historic detection of gravitational waves as the result of Weiss and his fellow scientists' efforts: the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO). The revolutionary gravitational wave findings have thrown open the door to a whole new way of studying the universe's most extreme events and its most massive objects.

At the U.S. National Science Foundation's LIGO announcement in Washington, D.C. last week, Weiss called it "a miracle" that the equations first predicting gravitational waves — which Albert Einstein wrote a century ago — work so well in describing the black hole system LIGO found. "It is just amazing," he said, adding that he'd "love to be able to see Einstein's face right now" when the physicist's name came up in a recent Kavli Foundation roundtable.

Below is a complete transcript of that roundtable, with Weiss joined by two other LIGO researchers, all members of MIT's Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research. Nergis Mavalvala has focused on developing LIGO's precision instruments (and has become a celebrity scientist in her birthplace of Pakistan since the discovery was announced). Matthew Evans has worked on the modeling and control of large interferometers including LIGO. 

Below, read their far-ranging conversation about the ramifications of LIGO's discovery and what more is in store in the dawning era of gravitational wave astronomy. The following is an edited transcript of the roundtable discussion. The participants have been provided the opportunity to amend or edit their remarks.

The Kavli Foundation: What does it feel like to have made this discovery? Rai, because you're one of LIGO's creators and someone who has pondered how to detect theses waves since the 1970s, let's start with you. 

Rai Weiss: You're not going to like my answer — I feel like a monkey just jumped off my back! But the monkey's not gone yet, he's still walking along here on the sidewalk. We've got more to do. At least some of the guilty feelings that might have come from having dragged all these people along for decades hunting gravitational waves and maybe ruined their careers isn't happening. So I am very pleased. 

Matthew Evans: If Rai had dragged us all toward our doom, it certainly would have been his fault. [Laughter] I hope he recognizes that he didn't.

Nergis Mavalvala: It's been a real joyride for decades and this is the pinnacle. It's been amazing to be involved in the science and technology of this effort regardless, and this discovery just makes it all really worthwhile. I don't think any of us ever feared we were being dragged to our doom. [Laughter] We were just on this great joyride where we didn't know where we might end up.

TKF: This discovery of gravitational waves has been a long time in the making and required a lot of patience. Were you all actually surprised, then, at how quickly the detection was made after Advanced LIGO began operating back in September?

Mavalvala: Yes. 

Evans: Very pleasantly surprised. 

Weiss: It's amazing. The signal is bigger than we ever imagined it would be.

Mavalvala: We had thought the first signal would be some little small thing poking up out of the noise and we'd have to work really hard to understand what it was. But in fact, the signal we got is a very clean and beautiful event. It tells us that the binary black holes were located about 1.5 billion light years away. They whirled around each other at nearly the speed of light before a collision that was so powerful, it converted approximately three times the mass of the Sun into gravitational wave energy — in just a few tenths of a second!

TKF: Two years ago, the BICEP2 Antarctic telescope project announced evidence for the signature of gravitational waves in light from 380,000 years after the Big Bang. But that major result came into question in early 2015 when other data suggested cosmic dust is a likelier source of the signature. Do you have any concerns about these LIGO findings?

Evans: I don't have any concerns about that. I've gone through the instruments from one end to the other and I couldn't find anything that might have gone wrong. But the LIGO Scientific Collaboration, which is the umbrella organization for all the international institutions and scientists involved in this, is very well aware of the history. So the collaboration as a whole has been extremely careful to make sure this discovery is solid.

Weiss: The signal is so pretty, many of us worried at the time that it was something done maliciously. Matt and others crucially established that the signal is unlikely to have been generated by a hacker and much more likely by nature. 

Mavalvala: The other possibility was that the instruments were misbehaving, but we've gone through a very, very detailed study and eliminated that as a possibility.

Weiss: There's one other piece of evidence — LIGO has detected more than one of these gravitational wave signals. That to me is a very important piece of the whole thing. Nature seems to behave as we would have expected, which is that it has produced not only a very powerful gravitational wave source like what we have detected and are talking about now, but also a not-so-powerful one of the same kind. 

Evans: Another thing really important to say in contrast to previously declared discoveries of gravitational waves is that we have multiple detectors running simultaneously which detected the same signal. At each site, we have literally thousands of auxiliary channels and sensors looking for any sort of external disturbance and everything checks out. 

TKF: What do you think are the biggest ramifications of this discovery?

Weiss: For many of us, this is the signal that we wanted to see from the beginning of this whole quest. We wanted to see gravitation à la Einstein and his theory of general relativity and which cannot be explained by any Newtonian mechanisms. The history of general relativity as a science is actually rather dismal. It was mostly theoretical work for many, many years. Then there was a renaissance in the 1960s when people began to realize that maybe the technology had changed enough that you could start doing experiments to test Einstein's theories. But then physicists ran into this really horrible problem that all the things that they could test were these infinitesimal effects. The bending of light, for example, is a pipsqueak effect. Or the slowing down of clocks in the gravitational field. 

Now all of sudden with LIGO, we're dealing with a regime where Einstein's equations had never been applied before. With these colliding black holes , general relativity gives you the right answer, which is miraculous. That is the reason why this is such a big deal. Einstein never expected this kind of test of his theories to happen this way because the effects we're looking for are so vanishingly small. I keep telling people I'd love to be able to see Einstein's face right now!

Mavalvala: Another thing that's really remarkable is our ability to observe a binary black hole system with LIGO that we could not have observed with light. We could point the best telescopes, sensitive to more or less any electromagnetic wavelength of light, at this system and probably see nothing. We cannot observe this system with any of the other fundamental forces of nature. It has to be gravity. 

If the signal LIGO had detected had been, say, neutron stars colliding and not black holes, we would have had no complaints, but there's probably a very good chance you could see neutron star mergers with other, conventional observational tools relying on light. In fact, we believe that certain classes of gamma ray bursts are just that. So what we have here in the findings we're announcing today is very important, in my opinion, because it's a completely dark-to-light system. 

Evans: To me, this detection means that the stars are no longer silent. The frequencies of gravitational waves that LIGO is designed to detect are actually in the human audible range. So when we're working on LIGO, we often take its output and put it on a speaker and just listen to it. For this binary black hole system, it made a distinctive, rising "whoooop!" sound. It's not that we just look up and see anymore, like we always have — we actually can listen to the universe now. It's a whole new sense, and humanity did not have this sense until LIGO was built. 

Weiss: We often whistled to demonstrate what we thought these smashing black holes might sound like, and it turns out if you play the piano or a keyboard, you can also make a similar sound. Do you know what a glissando is? It's when you run your fingers very quickly across the keys. If you started at the bottom of a keyboard and went all the way to the middle C and then hold that note for a little bit — that's what this black hole signal happened to be.

TKF: It's remarkable that the pattern or "sound" of gravitational waves detected by LIGO can reveal intricate details about the waves' sources. For instance, LIGO's data indicate that each black hole in this collapsing binary system had a mass of about 30 Suns. Until now, we've only known about much smaller black holes or supermassive black holes with masses of millions or billions of Suns. How will LIGO help us understand the origin of these never-before-seen, mid-size black holes?

Evans: Presumably, the existence of these 30 solar-mass black holes — and now after their collision, a nearly 60-solar mass black hole — will tell us something about what we call Population III stars. These are the earliest stars in the universe and are made almost entirely out of hydrogen. They are very massive and one of the plausible sources we've suspected for collapsing into these kinds of black holes. 

Weiss: Another idea is that these black holes are made in places where there is a high density of many millions of stars, for example in globular clusters. You can maybe get stars to stick together there and collect and ultimately make a big black hole. There were papers even before our discovery that were beginning to hint that this is the more likely way to get these objects. Now that our findings are out, you watch — in the next year or two, there are going to be probably hundreds of papers about the origin of the black holes we're talking about. It's going to be the wave of the future. 

Evans: The amazing thing at LIGO is that gravitational waves carry a tremendous amount of information about their source. As we get more and more of these detections, we'll even be able to tell how fast the black holes in these binary systems are spinning and if they are spinning in a way that's aligned. That data will let us decide whether these black holes came from a globular cluster or as a result of primeval Population III stars.

TKF: Turning our conversation to the LIGO observatories themselves — what technological advances did the black hole binary system discovery hinge on? Nergis, you were very involved in this aspect of the work, so please explain. 

Mavalvala: To build one of these gravitational wave detectors — these laser interferometers — you really only need two ingredients. One, you need mirrors that are very, very still. Then two, you need a way of measuring any very small motions. So the name of the game is having ways to shield mirrors from external, non-gravitational wave forces and having laser lights precise enough that you can probe the tiny motions that are induced by gravitational waves. Once you have those two things, you have yourself a detector.

The changes that granted us more sensitivity during Advanced LIGO were vibration isolation systems that were better than in the previous generation. In a slightly jargon-y way, we don't use just passive isolation; we're also using active vibration isolation. The other thing we had to do was reduce the vibrations of the mirrors due to thermally driven fluctuations. Then finally, we put in a more powerful laser so that our signal-to-noise ratio improved. The list of technologies involved in these improvement is very long, but those are the broad-brush strokes. 

TKF: Matt, part of your work involves figuring out the fundamental limits for LIGO and for future gravitational wave detectors. How much more sensitivity to gravitational waves can we achieve and why do we want to?

Evans: Putting first things first, we haven't really gotten the Advanced LIGO detectors working as well as they can be. We will in some time. We think we can get a factor of three times as much sensitivity as we have currently, which could bring ten times as many gravitational wave-producing events into LIGO's range. So we can expect a lot just from the Advanced LIGO detectors as we improve their function. 

The next step we're looking at is actually something that Nergis has pioneered, and that's to use quantum optics in our detectors to reduce the quantum noise of the lights. Nergis talked about having lasers that were very precise and high-powered. But you can actually import techniques from a research field called quantum optics to try to reduce some of the randomness that's inherent to light. Then, we're looking farther into the future as to whether or not we can build detectors that are still another ten times more sensitive. That will probably involve a new facility and longer interferometers. 

If you ask why we would want to do that, I think that we've just started this business. It looks like we have a lot of great physics and astrophysics we can do with these detectors. If we can make something ten times more sensitive, we'll be able to detect gravitational wave sources from anywhere in the universe. 

Black Hole Quiz: How Well Do You Know Nature's Weir...

Black holes are so bizarre, they sound unreal. Yet astronomers have found good evidence they exist. Test your knowledge of these wacky wonders.

TKF: With an even more advanced LIGO, as well as future gravitational-wave observatories, what other phenomena in the universe will we get to understand in new ways? 

Weiss: There is a whole spectrum of gravitational waves. With LIGO, we're looking for high-frequency waves. As to how high we can go, again, the piano analogy is a wonderful one. Because what we're looking for are sources that go from the bottom of the piano to the top of the piano. They don't stop at middle C, which is currently our detection limit with LIGO. They go higher. 

Beyond that, a lot of people are working in other frequencies and other wavelengths where there are phenomena which LIGO will not see. For example, we talked earlier about the BICEP project, which is looking for signatures of gravitational waves affecting the relic radiation from the Big Bang, called the cosmic microwave background. Well, that's going to work someday, or it may be that a satellite has to do that observation. If there are gravitational waves from the first epochs of the universe, they're going to have periods, or cycles, that are stretched to on the order of the age of the universe itself, almost 14 billion years. So that's the lower limit to the spectrum. 

For another example, there's a project that's been going on almost as long as LIGO called the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna Project, or LISA. It involves lasers beamed between spacecraft with baselines that are up to five million kilometers, not four kilometers, like LIGO's detection arms now, or even 40 kilometers like what Matt and Nergis want to do someday. LIGO can't touch LISA's detection spectrum, covering much longer wavelengths. With LISA, there's this wide open window with spectacular stuff in it, like binary white dwarf stars going around each other. Another is black holes with tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of the mass of the Sun, either colliding or having objects bend their orbit around them. You could do very, very careful tests of general relativity with that. I hope these other areas get dragged along by our discovery. 

TKF: Do you think there are any astrophysical objects in our galactic neighborhood that could unleash sizeable gravitational waves detectable by LIGO, or are all the major sources going to be far away?

Evans: I suggest that we hope that there's nothing close by. [Laughter] The binary black hole system we detected was 1.5 billion light years distant. That's very, very far away, and in terms of how much energy was released so quickly, it was the most powerful explosion ever observed. So I think you wouldn't want that in your neighborhood.

Mavalvala: But maybe not too close, just within our galaxy…

Evans: Well, a Milky Way event would probably saturate our detectors, but it's not like it could hurt us or anything. 

Weiss: Well, I hope you're right about that! [Laughter] If we ever happen to be around when a supernova goes off, that would be as spectacular as what we have discovered now because we will see everything that is going on deep inside the supernova. Gravitational waves come right out. Nothing scatters these waves, which is the opposite of light that never gets out of the core of the explosion to tell us anything. 

Evans: I hate to get peoples' hopes up for a supernova because they are so rare, but Rai is absolutely right. If we detect one in our galaxy, it would be a wonderful piece of physics. 

Mavalvala: I'll add that I hate to get peoples' hopes up for things we don't even know how to articulate yet. We don't fully know what's out there with this new way of looking at the universe in gravitational waves. So it's possible that there will be things maybe in our own galactic neighborhood, maybe far away, or maybe both that are just things we have not thought about yet. 

Evans: That's very true. We've heard the loudest possible thing you could imagine go off and we got it, but hey, we're just getting started.

This time, NASA and the Library of Congress have teamed up bringing together scientists, theologians, philosophers and historians from around the globe for a two day symposium in order to discuss how to prepare the world for Extraterrestrial contact, whether it be microbial organisms or intelligent beings.

“We’re looking at all scenarios about finding life. If you find microbes, that’s one thing. If you find intelligence, it’s another. And if they communicate, it’s something else, and depending on what they say, it’s something else!

“The idea is not to wait until we make a discovery, but to try and prepare the public for what the implications might be when such a discovery is made. I think the reason that NASA is backing this is because of all the recent activity in the discovery of exoplanets and the advances in astrobiology in general.

“People just consider it much more likely now that we’re going to find something — probably microbes first and maybe intelligence later. The driving force behind this is from a scientific point of view that it seems much more likely now that we are going to find life at some point in the future.” – Astronomer, symposium organizer and former chief NASA historian, Steven J. One of the theologians present was Brother Guy Consolmagno, who is the new president of the Vatican Observatory Foundation. This is what he had to say:

“I Believe [alien life exists], but I have no evidence. I would be really excited and it would make my understanding of my religion deeper and richer in ways that I can’t even predict yet, which is why it would be so exciting.”

He is now urging the public not to be so surprised when extra-terrestrial life is discovered, because it will be discovered, sooner than later! He even said that he would be happy to baptize them, if it’s intelligent extraterrestrial life that’s discovered. The Vatican has been very open to the idea of intelligent extraterrestrial life, and they’ve expressed these views for a very long time. Earth is not the center of the universe, it’s not flat, and it’s looking very likely that the next major paradigm shifting revelation will be the fact that we are not alone in the universe and never have been. It’s great to see the mainstream world gather, discuss and prepare for this possibility and ultimate reality, and it’s a great seg-way to create more awareness about the world of secrecy, the world’s within our world that deal with projects the human race knows nothing about.

The Other Probability – Intelligent Extraterrestrial Life is Already Here!!

In just the United States alone, at least half of all Americans say that we are not alone in the universe. Fifty percent of Americans already believe that there is some form of life on other planets, while only seventeen percent think that there isn’t. A quarter of Americans believe that intelligent extra-terrestrial visitors have already come to Earth and have been doing so for a long time.

There are many reasons why the extraterrestrial question continues to gain increasing popularity. People are starting to ask questions about the world around them, people are starting to wake up and start utilizing critical thinking and investigation. After thoroughly investigating this topic your conclusions will be similar I’m sure, to the conclusions of the majority, we are not alone, and we are being visited.

1. The Size of the Universe

How often do you look up into the night sky and wonder just how many stars, planets, galaxies and more are out there? Looking out at night though our window to the Universe! Space has been a high area of interest that has always fascinated scientists, philosophers, musicians and pretty much just about everyone.

What is it about deep space that grabs our attention so much? To think about just how big the universe is can really put things into perspective.

Counting the stars in the universe  is like trying to count the number of sand grains on a beach, not possible.

Although estimates vary among different experts, the general consensus is that there are at least between 100 billion and 200 billion galaxies in our universe. Think about that for a moment, and now throw in billions of stars in each galaxy! This number could very easily be in the trillions for all we know.

Take the Milky Way Galaxy for example, which measures to about 120,000 light years across (it would take light that many years to travel across the galaxy), and contains up to 400 billion stars. Again, that’s billions of galaxies that contain billions of stars.

Scientists estimate that at least 10 billion habitable Earth-sized planets exist in the milky way alone ( one galaxy out of billions), but it’s important to keep an open mind as to what type of conditions and environments some unknown extraterrestrial like forms could thrive in. They all don’t necessarily have to be Earth-like.

Given the estimations of the size of the universe, or multiverse (either or!), the odds are we are not alone.

2. Whistle Blowers

The past few years have seen a surge of whistle-blowers that’ve come out and said some remarkable things. Bradley Manning, Edward Snowden and Julian Assange have received the most attention, but the reality is that there are hundreds of whistle blowers who have come forward with verified credentials and backgrounds.

Mass survelience and the security state is not the only thing shocking people around the world, it’s the fact that many of these whistle blowers claim that we are not alone in the universe. It wouldn’t be so hard to ignore if it wasn’t for the backgrounds these people have in their respected fields.

The first one that comes to mind is Paul Hellyer, Former Canadian Defence Minister, the man responsible for unifying the Canadian Air Force, Army and the Navy into one united force now known as the Canadian Forces.

For someone with such a background to come out and make these extraordinary claims definitely grabbed the attention of many people.

Paul Hellyer isn’t the only one making extraordinary statements, at least a dozen NASA astronauts have done the same. Just like Dr. Edgar Mitchell’s quote, other astronauts have said some remarkable things. Let’s take a look at a few (out of many) examples.

The Media outlets of all kind are covering the topic, almost every movie that comes out these days has something to do with space or some kind of extraterrestrial intelligence. We’ve been bombarded with the topic for a while now so it’s not hard to see how it’s on the minds of many. Just by putting your TV on you are bombarded with references to space and what lies beyond!

The most recent case of mainstream extraterrestrial ‘noise’ was made when scientists recently spoke to the house Committee on Science, Space and Technology. Dan Werthimer of the SETI Research Centre at the University of California, Berkeley, recently called for more funding to be allocated to the search for extraterrestrial life since he is “close to 100 percent” certain that we are not alone.

In mid 2013, the same committee held a hearing about exoplanet discoveries, but perhaps one of the largest UFO/extraterrestrial hearings came at the National Press Club, which also took place in Mid-2013.

At this event, hundreds of researchers, activists and military/ agency/ political witnesses representing ten countries gave UFO/extraterrestrial testimony to six former members of the United States Congress about events and evidence indicating an extraterrestrial presence engaging the human race.

Former Sen. Mike Gravel (D-Alaska), and 2008 presidential candidate said that there is “an extraterrestrial influence that is investigating our planet. Something is monitoring the planet and they are monitoring it very cautiously.” You can learn more about the citizens hearing here.

There are literally millions of people out there claiming to have contact with extraterrestrial beings. This has played a large role in spreading the influence of extraterrestrial interest across the world. I myself have a 100% seen ET crafts! All of us seem to be naturally fascinated with the unknown, especially when it comes to space. It seems  like human nature, perhaps something built into our Genetic code!?

So many of us have seen something!

Neuroscience can now pretty much explain what happens to our body when we meditate, but it’s something we all knew to be beneficial before the science. Is extraterrestrial life similar? I guess the question was always “Do UFOs exist?” Today that question has been answered well and truly, and the presence of UFOs performing maneuvers that defy our laws of physics has been well documented all over the Planet. The question now has to be, “Is that an extraterrestrial space craft?”

There is nothing to fear, as they have been around forever. They have been aware of us long before we have been aware of them, watching us, possibly reviewing us all. As speculated with our ancient civilizations in Earth’s brief past, perhaps they will one day interact with humanity again. I guess we will see. “Aliens Will Enslave us All With Advanced Alien Technology” – SETI’s Negative Warning About The ET’s

A leading scientist and astronomer from the SETI Institute has a rather stark warning for the human race, that if alien beings ever visited Earth, they will be the ones to “set the rules”

In what appears to be a rather negative message about life beyond planet earth, it has been said by a senior figure at SETI, that if Aliens managed to travel the depths of space to find us it would Not be particularly good news for us all – due to their far superior technology and advances in science!

Jill Tarter who is part of the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Life (SETI) Institute and a member of the management board for the Allen Telescope Array in California, believes that with the Aliens advance technology will be used to enslave us all.

Alien technology could be vastly different to our own

With what appears to be a rather negative announcement about the Extraterrestrials, this news appears to be a bit too much of a coincidence that SETI are now officially assisting the US Government/Military (please click HERE) – perhaps they have been promised more funding, if they say what the government WANT them to say!?

Jill Tarter said:

“If they showed up on our doorstep, that means they have technologies that are considerably advanced with respect to ours,” she said.

“And because of that, they’re going to be the ones that set the rules.”

It has also been suggested by SETI that the reason we have not contacted Aliens yet (?) is due to the fact that our technology might not be compatible with theirs – yet more negativity from SETI, almost like they are trying to inform the world that the ‘Aliens aren’t visiting us!’

Could it be that the guys at SETI know more than they are making out?

SETI are currently sending radio waves out deep into the unknown universe, in the hope of one day hopefully receiving a response from the ET’s. But SETI have suggested that perhaps there’s nothing that says that the aliens will be aware of or even use radio waves to communicate – surely a far more advanced species would have ways of discovering unknown signals in space!?

“We may not have invented the right way to do this yet,” concedes Tarter, who obtained a PhD in Astronomy from the University of California, Berkley and worked as a Project Scientist for NASA’s SETI program before it was terminated in 1993. She has received two public service medals from the space agency.

SETI also believe that we may not of discovered the Aliens yet, due to the vastness of space/the Universe!  Again yet more negativity which is trying to highlight to the world that ‘we have no knowledge about the Aliens’.

It was according to Tarter, that if you look at space as the equivalent of Earth’s oceans, then on the same scale we’ve examined the equivalent of a glass of water, which is a fair enough comment to make, HOWEVER a far more advanced species cold have explored FAR more of the Universe than what we have!

“If there is a civilisation out there that is only 1,000 years older than we are, who knows what type of technology, or what type of process, they’ve put into communicating with others,” agrees Dr Nathalie Cabrol, who now heads up the SETI Institute.

It is rather interesting that while SETI might think we’re some way off communicating with aliens, NASA have recently confirmed that we’ll do it in the next couple of decades – It is clear that both organisations are hiding something.

“I think in the next 20 years we will find out we are not alone in the universe.” Said  NASA

Nasa Administrator Charles Bolden added: “I would venture to say that most of my colleagues here say it is improbable that in the limitless vastness of the universe we humans stand alone.”

A large number of older UFO files held by the UK government have already been released, including details of sightings by officials and police.

 

U.I.P’s friend Nick Pope, who actually used to investigate the existence of UFOs for the MoD, said the files should contain some extremely fascinating sightings.

 

However, referring to what is often called the most famous UFO claim in history – sparked by claims an alien spaceship crashed in New Mexico, US, in 1947 – Nick Pope added the soon-to-be-released files are probably not a “UK Roswell-style UFO in a hangar style cover up”.

 

When the release of the files were stalled in 2014, which the MoD blamed on “additional processing requirements”, Mr Pope sympathised with alien researchers and also believed that these were potential ‘delaying tactics’.

 

He said at the time:

 

“This massive delay will have conspiracy theorists up in arms. It looks like the MoD is stalling.

“The suspicion will be that there’s a bombshell in these files and that the Ministry does not know how to handle it.

“I can understand why conspiracy theorists will be angry and suspicious.”

 

Nick Pope also demands the TRUTH.

 

Nick Pope worked for the British MoD for at least 21 years, but was specifically assigned to investigate UFOs for an intriguing three-year period!

 

He said:

 

“Having worked on the MoD’s UFO project I’m sorry to say that we don’t have any crashed spaceships hidden away in some RAF hangar, as some believe, but we do have some fascinating and unexplained cases in our files.”

 

The ‘Redlesham Forest incident’, which is alleged to have taken place near RAF Woodbridge, Suffolk, in 1980, saw US Airman First Class John Burroughs, who was stationed there, exposed to radiation after a mystery “UFO visitation”.

 

He has since won damages from the American military, but still wants answers about what happened and hopes they will be in the new files.

 

Pat Frascogna, his lawyer, said:

 

“We know there is information contained in these MoD files about the Rendlesham Forest incident because the MoD clearly indicated so in responding to a Freedom of Information request by John Burroughs last year.”

CIA cover up: Spooks secrecy over UFO sightings to prevent 'mass hysteria' exposed

IT HAS long been claimed the US Government, its enforcement agencies, and NASA have been involved in a massive cover up over contact with aliens and UFOs.

Five-dimensional black hole could 'break' general relativity

Researchers have shown how a bizarrely shaped black hole could cause Einstein's general theory of relativity, a foundation of modern physics, to break down. However, such an object could only exist in a universe with five or more dimensions.

The researchers, from the University of Cambridge and Queen Mary University of London, have successfully simulated a black hole shaped like a very thin ring, which gives rise to a series of 'bulges' connected by strings that become thinner over time. These strings eventually become so thin that they pinch off into a series of miniatureblack holes, similar to how a thin stream of water from a tap breaks up into droplets.

Ring-shaped black holes were 'discovered' by theoretical physicists in 2002, but this is the first time that their dynamics have been successfully simulated using supercomputers. Should this type of black hole form, it would lead to the appearance of a 'naked singularity', which would cause the equations behind general relativity to break down. The results are published in the journal Physical Review Letters.

General relativity underpins our current understanding of gravity: everything from the estimation of the age of the stars in the universe, to the GPS signals we rely on to help us navigate, is based on Einstein's equations. In part, the theory tells us that matter warps its surrounding spacetime, and what we call gravity is the effect of that warp. In the 100 years since it was published, general relativity has passed every test that has been thrown at it, but one of its limitations is the existence of singularities

A singularity is a point where gravity is so intense that space, time, and the laws of physics, break down. General relativity predicts that singularities exist at the centre of black holes, and that they are surrounded by an event horizon - the 'point of no return', where the gravitational pull becomes so strong that escape is impossible, meaning that they cannot be observed from the outside.

"As long as singularities stay hidden behind an event horizon, they do not cause trouble and general relativity holds - the 'cosmic censorship conjecture' says that this is always the case," said study co-author Markus Kunesch, a PhD student at Cambridge's Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP). "As long as the cosmic censorship conjecture is valid, we can safely predict the future outside of black holes. Because ultimately, what we're trying to do in physics is to predict the future given knowledge about the state of the universe now."

But what if a singularity existed outside of an event horizon? If it did, not only would it be visible from the outside, but it would represent an object that has collapsed to an infinite density, a state which causes the laws of physics to break down. Theoretical physicists have hypothesised that such a thing, called a naked singularity, might exist in higher dimensions.

"If naked singularities exist, general relativity breaks down," said co-author Saran Tunyasuvunakool, also a PhD student from DAMTP. "And if general relativity breaks down, it would throw everything upside down, because it would no longer have any predictive power - it could no longer be considered as a standalone theory to explain the universe."

We think of the universe as existing in three dimensions, plus the fourth dimension of time, which together are referred to as spacetime. But, in branches of theoretical physics such as string theory, the universe could be made up of as many as 11 dimensions. Additional dimensions could be large and expansive, or they could be curled up, tiny, and hard to detect. Since humans can only directly perceive three dimensions, the existence of extra dimensions can only be inferred through very high energy experiments, such as those conducted at the Large Hadron Collider.

Einstein's theory itself does not state how many dimensions there are in the universe, so theoretical physicists have been studying general relativity in higher dimensions to see if cosmic censorship still holds. The discovery of ring-shaped black holes in five dimensions led researchers to hypothesise that they could break up and give rise to a naked singularity.

What the Cambridge researchers, along with their co-author Pau Figueras from Queen Mary University of London, have found is that if the ring is thin enough, it can lead to the formation of naked singularities.

Using the COSMOS supercomputer, the researchers were able to perform a full simulation of Einstein's complete theory in higher dimensions, allowing them to not only confirm that these 'black rings' are unstable, but to also identify their eventual fate. Most of the time, a black ring collapses back into a sphere, so that the singularity would stay contained within the event horizon. Only a very thin black ring becomes sufficiently unstable as to form bulges connected by thinner and thinner strings, eventually breaking off and forming a naked singularity. New simulation techniques and computer code were required to handle these extreme shapes.

"The better we get at simulating Einstein's theory of gravity in higher dimensions, the easier it will be for us to help with advancing new computational techniques - we're pushing the limits of what you can do on a computer when it comes to Einstein's theory," said Tunyasuvunakool. "But if cosmic censorship doesn't hold in higher dimensions, then maybe we need to look at what's so special about a four-dimensional universe that means it does hold."

The cosmic censorship conjecture is widely expected to be true in our four-dimensional universe, but should it be disproved, an alternative way of explaining the universe would then need to be identified. One possibility is quantum gravity, which approximates Einstein's equations far away from a singularity, but also provides a description of new physics close to the singularity.

The COSMOS supercomputer at the University of Cambridge is part of the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) DiRAC HPC Facility.

The 2 Most Dangerous Numbers in The Universe are Threatening the End of Physics

CERN has stated that the LHCb experiment had discovered the presence of two new baryon subatomic particles. A deeply worrying and controversial line of thinking has emerged within the physics community. It's the idea that we are reaching the utter limit of what we can understand about the world around us through science.
"The next few years may tell us whether we'll be capable of continuing to increase our understanding of nature or whether maybe, for the first time in the history of science, we could be facing questions that we cannot answer," Harry Cliff, a particle physicist at the European Organization for Nuclear Research — better known as CERN — said in a latest TED talk in Geneva, Switzerland.

Equally scary is the reason for this imminent limit, which Cliff says is because "the laws of physics forbid it."
At the core of Cliff's argument are what he calls the two most dangerous numbers in the cosmos. These numbers are accountable for all the matter, structure, and life that we witness across the cosmos. And if these two numbers were even somewhat different, says Cliff, the cosmos would be an empty, lifeless place.

Dangerous No. 1: The strength of the Higgs field

The first dangerous number on Cliff's list is a value that signifies the strength of what physicists call the Higgs field, an unseen energy field not completely unlike other magnetic fields that permeates the cosmos.
As particles swim through the Higgs field, they gain mass to ultimately become the protons, neutrons, and electrons comprising all of the atoms that make up you, me, and everything we see around us.
Without it, we wouldn't be here.
We know with near certainty that the Higgs field exists because of a revolutionary finding in 2012, when CERN physicists discovered a new elementary particle called the Higgs boson. According to theory, you can't have a Higgs boson without a Higgs field. But there's something enigmatic about the Higgs field that continues to perturb physicists like Cliff.
According to Einstein's theory of general relativity and the theory of quantum mechanics — the two theories in physics that drive our understanding of the cosmos on incredibly large and extremely small scales — the Higgs field should be performing one of two tasks, says Cliff.
Either it should be turned off, meaning it would have a strength value of zero and wouldn't be working to give particles mass, or it should be turned on, and, as the theory goes, this "on value" is "absolutely enormous," Cliff says. But neither of those two scenarios are what physicists observe.
"In reality, the Higgs field is just slightly on," says Cliff. "It's not zero, but it's ten-thousand-trillion times weaker than it's fully on value — a bit like a light switch that got stuck just before the 'off' position. And this value is crucial. If it were a tiny bit different, then there would be no physical structure in the universe."
Why the strength of the Higgs field is so absurdly weak defies understanding. Physicists hope to find an answer to this question by discovering brand-new particles at the recently upgraded particle accelerator at CERN. So far, though, they're still hunting.

Dangerous No. 2: The strength of dark energy

The area shown is approximately 300 million light-years across. Cliff's second dangerous number doubles as what physicists have called "the worst theoretical prediction in the history of physics."
This dangerous number deals in the depths of deep space and a mind-meltingly complex phenomenon called dark energy. Dark energy, a repulsive force that's accountable for the accelerating expansion of our universe, was first measured in 1998.
Still, "we don't know what dark energy is," Cliff admits. "But the best idea is that it's the energy of empty space itself — the energy of the vacuum."
If this is true, you should be capable of summing up all the energy of empty space to get a value demonstrating the strength of dark energy. And though theoretical physicists have done so, there's one gigantic problem with their answer:
"Dark energy should be 10120 times stronger than the value we detect from astronomy," Cliff said. "This is a number so mind-bogglingly enormous that it's impossible to get your head around ... this number is greater than any number in astronomy — it's a thousand-trillion-trillion-trillion times bigger than the number of atoms in the cosmos. That's a pretty bad prediction."
On the bright side, we're lucky that dark energy is smaller than theorists forecast. If it followed our theoretical models, then the repulsive force of dark energy would be so enormous that it would literally rip our universe apart. The fundamental forces that bind atoms together would be powerless against it and nothing could ever form — galaxies, stars, planets, and life as we know it would not exist.
On the other hand, it's tremendously frustrating that we can't use our present theories of the cosmos to develop a better measurement of dark energy that agrees with existing observations. Even better than improving our theories would be to find a way that we can understand why the strength of dark energy and the Higgs field is what it is.

Getting answers could be impossible

Cliff said there is one likely way to get some answers, but we might never have the ability to prove it. If we could somehow confirm that our cosmos is just one in a vast multiverse of billions of other cosmoses, then "suddenly we can understand the weirdly fine-tuned values of these two dangerous numbers [because] in most of the multiverse dark energy is so strong that the cosmos gets torn apart, or the Higgs field is so weak that no atoms can form," Cliff said.
To prove this, physicists need to find new particles that would uphold drastic theories like string theory, which predicts the presence of a multiverse. Right now, there's only one place in the world that could perhaps produce these particles, if they exist, and that's the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.
And physicists only have two to three years before CERN shuts the LHC down for upgrades. If we haven't found anything by then, Cliff said, it could signal the beginning of the end.

"We may be entering a new era in physics. An era where there are weird features in the universe that we cannot explain. An era where we have hints that we live in a multiverse that lies frustratingly beyond our reach. An era where we will never be able to answer the question why is there something rather than nothing."

To Make a Moon Village, Think Beyond Science and Engineering (Op-Ed)

"Been there, done that." President Barack Obama famously used that line to help shift the world's attention from the moon to Mars as a space destination in recent years, though the debate on where to go next continues. But whether humanity wants to colonize the moon or terraform Mars, establishing a settlement on other celestial bodies is a challenge of immense scale. 

So a more important question to ask is this: What does it take to establish a permanent human presence outside of Earth? 

Beyond the usual suspects

This question presents a great diversity of challenges that transcend disciplines. It goes beyond the realm of science and engineering, the two fields often considered the core of space exploration, and include politics, law, architecture, business and design. Extending a human presence beyond the planet will depend on diversifying the space community to include broader interests and perspectives. 

Already, a number of institutions collectively foster a multidisciplinary environment within the space industry. The Sasakawa International Center for Space Architecture (SICSA) in the University of Houston offers the world's only master of science program in space architecture. Other institutions educate students about space law and policy, including the George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs in Washington, D.C., and Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy in Houston. 

These unique programs equip their students with specialized knowledge and skills for the field of space travel. The real value, however, is in bringing new perspectives to the ever-growing space industry. [Moon Base Visions: How to Build a Lunar Colony (Photos )]

Currently, most of those disciplines are functionally independent. Rarely do politicians talk about the architecture of space vehicles, or scientists talk about the potential of space business. But in reality, those fields are so intertwined that interdisciplinary fusion can be a real game-changer. 

The space industry should focus not merely on diversification, but also on the process by which diverse disciplines interact. It is time to take a more transparent, integrative and interdisciplinary approach to space exploration.

One method for integrating disciplines, called the integrated design approach (IDA), has proven effective in sustainable design and could provide the same benefits for space. 

Lessons from an HVAC

Traditionally, designers have used a linear process to construct sustainable buildings. Architects make sketches and pass them on to the engineers, who evaluate the designs and then assign subcontractors, and so on. However, with that approach, time and money are already running out by the time conflicts and problems arise. 

IDA is successful because it involves all project members from the beginning, allowing them to identify and resolve potential conflicts earlier in the process. And the multidisciplinary environment forces project members to think outside their immediate areas of expertise, inspiring innovative solutions to problems and generally producing more energy-efficient and cost-effective results. 

For example, in the book "Integrative Design Guide to Green Building" (John Wiley and Sons Ltd, 2009), the authors present real-life situations in which IDA led to a surprisingly efficient outcome. The book was written by 7group, a multidisciplinary team dedicated to sustainability and regeneration, and Bill Reed, a proponent and practitioner of sustainability and regeneration.

In the example, a team of architects, landscape designers and engineers was determining the placement of an HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system in an office building, and the architect asked the mechanical engineer to provide an answer. The engineer was stunned, at first. Even though he had more than 20 years of experience designing HVAC systems, never in his life had anyone asked him where to locate one. After a few minutes, he provided a solution that turned out to be extremely efficient and cost-effective. Instead of placing the necessary mechanical room on the roof, which the architects had done in the last project, the engineer proposed placing heat-pump units on the ground floor of the building. Not only did this solution reduce the piping work and save $40,000 in construction costs, it also led to simplified maintenance and significant operational savings.

From that experience, the team realized the importance of questioning assumptions. All components of a building are interdependent, and therefore everyone's input should be respected — not only individuals within one's own area of expertise, but also everyone else in a team.

Innovative solutions or strategies often come from unexpected sources, and in this example, the multidisciplinary environment was critical to promoting openness and stimulating everyone's creativity.

Finding transparency (literally)

The work of Danish architects in the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) provides another illustration. In 2009, the Urban Planning Department of Tallinn, Estonia, and the Union of Estonian Architects held an international competition for a new town hall in in Tallinn. Throughout the design process, the BIG architects received input from the jury about the citizens’ needs and take into account of the city’s governance system. The design had to be flexible and accommodate unexpected demands. 

The BIG group's solution was simple yet quite novel; it was to increase the transparency between the citizens and politicians, to improve governance and the town's participatory democracy. 

The BIG town hall design has myriad glass windows and an open structure, offering the politicians daylight and a view of the city marketplace, and offering the town's citizens a chance to see their elected officials at work. 

Although the mayor of Tallinn had expressed his hope to build a new city hall, the proposal still remains a mere design, albeit one that shows the effectiveness of integrated design. Here, the architects not only provided a great working space for politicians, but also unified the city as a whole. 

Space habitation is not just space travel

Space infrastructures are, in essence, organic systems. They need to be more self-sustaining than any regenerative and sustainable green buildings on Earth. And because of the constrained living conditions they present, such buildings must include input from the astronauts and travelers who might use them, and the input from a range of designers, engineers and others.

For example, the habitation modules of the International Space Station must address energy and thermal balance, waste management, mechanical structure, and architecture, in addition to comfort and privacy, among other factors. 

The Habitation Design Center in NASA's Johnson Space Center often invites astronauts as consultants to improve module designs and make them more human-centered. It may seem obvious, but it is crucial that space vehicles be designed with feedback from astronauts, instead of becoming function-based machines like fighter planes. Rarely does one see inhabitants involved in the design process of an Earth-bound structure.  

For missions, like space colonization, of a larger scale, the IDA approach is even more necessary. Settling on a celestial body is far different from simply going there. To establish a sustainable living space in such a hostile environment, one needs to not only think about science and engineering, but also consider psychological, architectural, societal, political and economic aspects.

Targeting the moon

Today, many of the world's space agencies have expressed interest in sending humans to the moon. Johann-Dietrich Woerner, the director general of the European Space Agency (ESA), has been pushing his vision to establish a moon village. Although the agency has yet to officially approve that plan, his message has gone global. 

Despite the hint of novelty it carries, the concept of lunar colonization existed long before the Apollo era. Numerous books and papers have presented promising plans for a lunar colony, but none have been realized, or even attempted. One of the fundamental obstacles is financial. Even if the moon village concept succeeded, most taxpayers would not understand why it was worth the cost. 

And yet, the moon has the potential to help humanity grow as a species. A lunar colony could be a model for a sustainable ecosystem, a testing ground to strengthen international collaboration, a giant laboratory for cutting-edge scientific experiments and technological innovation, a platform for new businesses, a stepping-stone for further exploration of the solar system, and a mental exercise for challenging norms.

But if humanity is to establish a lunar colony, the world must employ IDA, involving all key players at the start. 

Space horizons 2016: international city on the moon

Over the weekend of Feb. 19 to 21, Brown University in Rhode Island will host Space Horizons 2016, a student-focused, three-day integrative workshop that brings students and professionals from all disciplines to conceptualize an international lunar city. 

The event will consist of four workshops — Politics, Infrastructure, Science, and Business & Technology — that will ask several questions: What would politically motivate participating countries? What is the economic value of a lunar city, and what commercial opportunities can sustain the lunar economy? What new experiments would emerge on a lunar base, and how would they help humanity live on the moon and beyond? What infrastructure is required to sustain a lunar ecosystem? 

Through the integrated-design approach, participants will be encouraged to think beyond their immediate expertise, and to recognize the connections between their skills and the space industry, making space more tangible to everybody. Each workshop will have experienced mentors and professionals, including representatives from NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), the Lunar and Planetary Institute, PoliSpace, Sasakawa International Center for Space Architecture, Masten Space Systems, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Brown University, Yale University in New Jersey, the University of Central Florida and the Rhode Island School of Design. Ultimately, the findings may lead to a joint project or publication. 

But Space Horizons 2016 is not the first to take on the moon village concept. At the end of last year, ESA European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) hosted "The Moon Village Workshop", which took place in conjunction with International Symposium on Moon 2020-2030. The workshop invited professionals and students from all over the world to discuss and propose ideas to consolidate visions for the moon village concept. The participants were split into three groups: Moon Habitat Design, Science and Technology Potential in the Moon Village, and Engaging Stakeholders.

The three working groups came up with several recommended actions to be taken by the director general of ESA, including the design and operations of a moon-base simulation at the European Astronaut Centre and the engagement of the most direct stakeholders, such as media, national governments and citizens, at the next ESA Ministerial Council Meeting. 

It takes time for educational strategies to prove their effectiveness. And as long as the moon village concept remains a vision, it will be challenging to involve people from nonspace industries, especially in an era in which the space industry is generally considered exclusive to rocket scientists. 

However, the future of space exploration is in widening the community. Most innovative ideas are the products of interdisciplinary fusions. Just as much as technological advancements will accelerate space exploration, broader interests and perspectives will also catalyze the process of establishing space colonies. The integrated-design approach has the potential to not only open up new perspectives, but also offer a younger generation an opportunity to design the future of space exploration and radically change humanity's perception of space. It is those people who will advance society into the universe.

The real life X Files: CIA release former top secret documents about 'alien UFOs landing on earth'

FORMER secret documents detailing a series of strange encounters with UFOs and aliens have been released by the CIA.

The previously unseen files date back to the 1950s

The files, which date back to the 1950s, contain extraordinary witness accounts of extraterrestrials landing on earth.

One document from 1952 is a sworn testimony by former mayor of German town Gleimershausen, Oscar Linke.

He told how he and 11-year-old daughter Gabriella came into contact with two men in "shiny metallic clothing" and a large object resembling "a huge frying pan".

He described how one of the men had a "lamp" on the front part of his body which "lit up at regular intervals".

In the document Linke recounted the moment his daughter called on him from several metres behind which disturbed the two men.

He said the strange pair then climbed into the object which turned from green to red and began to "glitter" and "hum".

It then reportedly began to "rise slowly from the ground and rotate like a toy" before it disappeared "over the heights and forests".

Linke admitted he would have thought he and his daughter were "dreaming" if not for what happened next.

He explained: "When the object had disappeared, I went to the place where it had been.

"I found a circular opening in the ground and it was quite evident that it was freshly dug."

The file contains accounts from several others living in the area at the time who also reported seeing a similar comet-like object.

Another document from the same year tells of "two fiery disks" sighted in the southern part of the Belgian Congo in the Elisabethville district, now known as Lubumbashi.

According to the report, the disks "glided in elegant curves and changed their position many times" giving off a "penetrating hissing and buzzing sound".

Airman Commander Pierre attempted to pursue the objects in a fighter plane and came within around 120m of one of the discs.

He described the outer rim of the UFO as "veiled in fire" with "an enormous speed of rotation".

The account explained: "Pierre did not regard it possible that the disc could be manned, since the irregular speed as well as the heat wiuld make it impossible for a person to stay inside the stable core."

He estimated their speed to be around 900mph.

One more report from May of 1952 tells of a mysterious flying object emitting flashing light over Barcelona.

The journalist who spotted it, Valentin Garcia, said: "The newspaper office was soon flooded with telephone calls from people who had seen the object."

The following month other witness accounts describe similar incidents over Meknes, Taourirt and Casblanca in Morocco and Algiers in Tunisia.

Nederlander filmt planeten naast zon vanuit vliegtuig ( VIDEO )

Vorige week publiceerden wij een artikel met daarin opnamen van twee planeten nabij de zon genomen vanuit een vliegtuig en die na onderzoek echt bleken te zijn.

Afgelopen zaterdag vloog er een landgenoot van Innsbruck in Oostenrijk naar Rotterdam en ook hij zag en filmde een aantal planeten rondom de zon. 

Alleen al in dit nog prille jaar zijn er inmiddels talloze opnames gemaakt van één of meerdere planeten zichtbaar naast en rondom de zon. 

Uiteraard zullen een aantal van die opnames verklaard kunnen worden als lens flares of bekende hemellichamen zoals de planeet Venus, maar een fiks aantal kan ook niet op die manier verklaard worden. 

Zo hadden we vorige week een artikel over een Duitser die tijdens een vlucht van Zürich naar Hamburg een aantal planeten filmde vanuit een vliegtuig. Deze opname is door de onderzoeker Marshall Masters bestudeerd en hij komt tot de conclusie dat deze opname echt is en zich daar wel degelijk een aantal planeten bevinden. 

Nu kregen wij een aantal filmopnames toegestuurd van een lezer die afgelopen zaterdag van Innsbruck naar Rotterdam vloog. 

Ook daarop zijn meerdere planeten waar te nemen naast de zon. De lens flare in het beeld beweegt en verplaatst/verdwijnt terwijl de "tweede zon" op positie blijft.

Later op de vlucht nog wel wat beelden die heb ik eventueel ook met 2 zichtbaar rond de zon. 

 

 

Als wij het bericht goed hebben begrepen is de eerste video gefilmd toen hij direct zicht op de zon had en de andere twee door de telefoon omhoog te houden richting zon. 

    Bij het eerste filmpje van gisteren had ik wel zicht op de zon. Had me gepolariseerde zonnebril op gedaan. En daar zag ik die ervoor en erachter. Die rechter volgens mij niet maar het ging allemaal erg snel. Mijn telefoon geeft Barwies aan als locatie om 09:55. We gingen om 09.50 de lucht in.

She took the kids to the beach as she usually does a few times a week when she noticed this object. I was not present but watching the video it seems to change shape or reflect/absorb light. I also noticed what I think looks like a thin red line maybe a light across the object?

Fireball caught on tape over Euless, Texas

Here’s a new video of a bright ball of light in the sky above Euless, Texas. This was taken on 17th February 2016.

Witness report: Cool video I captured with my dashcam of a really close meteor. I witnessed a similar incident higher up in the sky 2 days before this… Interesting happening, glad I was driving by at the right moment. This was on 183 Westbound in the Euless area.

Gravitational Waves: What Their Discovery Means for Science and Humanity

People around the world cheered yesterday morning (Feb. 11) when scientists announced the first direct detection of gravitational waves — ripples in the fabric of space-time whose existence was first proposed by Albert Einstein, in 1916.

The waves came from two black holes circling each other, closer and closer, until they finally collided. The recently upgraded Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) captured the signal on Sept. 14, 2015. Not every scientific discovery gets this kind of reception, so what exactly is all the hype about, and what's next for LIGO now that it has spotted these elusive waves?

First of all, detecting two colliding black holes is thrilling by itself — no one knew for sure if black holes actually merged together to create even more-massive black holes, but now there's physical proof. And there's the joy of finally having direct evidence for a phenomenon that was first predicted 100 years ago, using an instrument that was proposed 40 years ago. But what is truly monumental about this detection is that it gives humanity the ability to see the universe in a totally new way, scientists said. The ability to directly detect gravitational waves — which are generated by the acceleration or deceleration of massive objects in space — has been compared to a deaf person suddenly gaining the ability to hear sound. An entirely new realm of information is now available.

"It's like Galileo pointing the telescope for the first time at the sky," LIGO team member Vassiliki (Vicky) Kalogera, a professor of physics and astronomy at Northwestern University in Illinois, told Space.com. "You're opening your eyes — in this case, our ears — to a new set of signals from the universe that our previous technologies did not allow us to receive, study and learn from."

"Up until now, we've been deaf to gravitational waves," LIGO Executive Director David Reitze, of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), said during an announcement ceremony in Washington, D.C. "What's going to come now is we're going to hear more things, and no doubt we'll hear things that we expected to hear … but we will also hear things that we never expected."

With this new sensory view of the universe, here are some of the things scientists hope to discover.

LIGO is particularly sensitive to gravitational waves that come from violent cosmic events, such as two massive objects colliding or a star exploding. The observatory has the potential to locate these objects or events before light-based telescopes can do so, and in some cases, gravitational-wave observations could be the only way to find and study such events.

For example, in yesterday's announcement, scientists reported that LIGO had identified two black holes spinning around each other and merging together in a final, energetic collision. As their name suggests, black holes don't radiate light, which means they are invisible to telescopes that collect and study electromagnetic radiation. Some black holes are visible with light-based telescopes, because material in their immediate vicinity radiates, but scientists haven't seen examples of merging black holes with radiating material around them.

In addition, the black holes spotted by LIGO are 29 and 36 times the mass of the sun, respectively. But Reitze said that as LIGO's sensitivity continues to improve, the instrument could be sensitive to black holes that are 100, 200 or even 500 times the mass of the sun that are further away from Earth. "There could be a really nice discovery space that opens up once we get out there," he said.

Scientists already know that studying the sky in different wavelengths of light can reveal new data about the cosmos. For many centuries, astronomers could only work with optical light. But relatively recently, researchers built instruments allowing them to study the universe using X-rays, radio waves, ultraviolet waves and gamma-rays. Each time, scientists got a new view of the universe.

"If we're ever lucky enough to have a supernova in our own galaxy, or maybe in a nearby galaxy, we will be able to look at the actual dynamics of what goes on inside the supernova," said LIGO co-founder Rainer Weiss of MIT, who spoke at the announcement ceremony. While light is often blocked by dust and gas, "gravitational waves come right out [of the supernova], boldly unimpeded," Weiss said. "As a consequence, you really find out what's going on inside of these things."

Other exotic objects scientists hope to study with gravitational waves are neutron stars, which are mind-bogglingly dense, burned-out stellar corpses: A teaspoon of neutron-star material would weigh about a billion tons on Earth. Scientists aren't sure what happens to regular matter under such extreme conditions, but gravitational waves could provide extremely helpful clues, because these waves should carry information about the interior of the neutron star all the way to Earth, LIGO scientists said.

LIGO also has a system set up to alert light-based telescopes when the detector seems to have spotted a gravitational wave. Some of the astronomical events that LIGO will study, such as colliding neutron stars, may produce light in all wavelengths, from gamma-rays to radio waves. With LIGO's alert system in place, it's possible that scientists could observe some astronomical events or objects in various wavelengths of light, plus gravitational waves, which would provide a "very complete picture" of those events, Reitze said.

"When that happens, that'll be, I think, the next big thing in this field," he said. 

Relativity

Gravitational waves were first predicted by Einstein's theory of general relativity, which was published in 1916. That famous theory has stood up to all kinds of physical tests, but there are some aspects that scientists haven't been able to study in the real world, because they require very extreme circumstances. The extreme warping of space-time is one example of this.

"Until now, we have only seen warped space-time when it is very calm — as though we had only seen the surface of the ocean on a very calm day, when it's quite glassy," Kip Thorne of Caltech, another founding member of LIGO and an expert on warped space-time, said at yesterday's ceremony. "We had never seen the ocean roiled in a storm, with crashing waves. All that changed on Sept. 14. The colliding black holes that produced these gravitational waves created a violent storm in the fabric of space and time." [The History & Structure of the Universe (Infographic)]

"This observation tests that regime beautifully, very strongly," Thorne continued. "And Einstein comes out with beaming success."

But the study of general relativity via gravitational waves is far from over. Questions remain about the nature of the graviton, the particle believed to carry the gravitational force (just like the photon is the particle that carries the electromagnetic force). And scientists have many questions about the inner workings of black holes, which gravitational waves may help illuminate (so to speak). But all of that, the scientists said, will be revealed slowly, over the course of many years, as LIGO and related instruments collect more data on more events.

Looking toward the next three years, Reitze said the collaboration is focused on increasing LIGO's sensitivity to its full potential. This will make the observatory — which consists of two big detectors, one in Louisiana and the other in Washington state — more sensitive to gravitational waves. But scientists don't know how many events LIGO will see, because they don't know how often many of these events occur in the universe.

LIGO detected the binary black hole merger even before the instrument began its first official observation campaign after its recent upgrade, but it's possible that this was a lucky break. To get the gravitational astronomy train rolling, LIGO simply needs more data.

When asked to comment on LIGO's impact on the world beyond the scientific community, and about how gravitational-wave science might influence people's daily lives, Reitze simply said, "Who knows?"

"When Einstein predicted general relativity, who would have predicted that we'd use it every day when we use our cellphones?" he said. (General relativity provides an understanding how gravity influences the passing of time, and this information is necessary for GPS technology, which uses satellites that orbit further away from the gravitational pull of the Earth than people on the surface).

LIGO is "the most sensitive instrument ever built," said Reitze, and the technological advances that have been made while building the observatory may feed into technologies that will be used in ways people can't yet predict.

Thorne said he sees the larger contribution of LIGO slightly differently.

"When we look back on the era of the Renaissance, and we ask ourselves, 'What did the humans of that era give to us that's important to us today?' I think we would all agree it's great art, great architecture, great music," he said.

"Similarly, when our descendants look back on this era, and they ask themselves, 'What great things came to us?' … I believe there will be an understanding of the fundamental laws of the universe and an understanding of what those laws do in the universe, and an exploration of the universe," Thorne added. "LIGO is a big part of that. The rest of astronomy is a big part of that. And I think that cultural gift to our future generations is really much bigger than any kind of technological spin-off, than the ultimate development of technology of any kind. I think we should be proud of what we give to our descendants culturally."
