The Fact and Fiction of the NASA EmDrive Paper Leak

The Fact and Fiction of the NASA EmDrive Paper Leak

Written by DANIEL OBERHAUS - CONTRIBUTOR
If humanity ever wants to truly explore the outer reaches of our solar system or travel to other stars, we’re going to have to build a better engine for our spacecraft. In fact, this engine will have to be so good that it will be capable of generating thrust without consuming propellant. That’s right: If we ever want a four-hour trip to the moon or a two-month trip to Mars, we’re going to need a rocket engine that doesn’t need rocket fuel.

This is the idea behind the radio frequency resonant cavity thruster—otherwise known as EmDrive—a theoretical reactionless engine powered by turning electricity into microwaves and bouncing them around a closed metal funnel.

The EmDrive has been dismissed as “impossible” on more than one occasion because it appears to violate Newton’s Third Law of Motion, which states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. But if a leaked NASA paper posted online last Saturday is to be believed, then not only are NASA scientists pursuing an EmDrive, but they actually made one that works.

As detailed in the paper, a team of NASA physicists led by Harold “Sonny” White and Paul March—both leading figures in exotic propulsion systems—was able to generate thrust in a “tapered RF test article” (read: EmDrive prototype) during a series of tests at NASA’s Eagleworks Labs at Johnson Space Center in the fall of 2015.

In essence, the NASA EmDrive in the paper consists of a closed copper cone, the inside of which is being bombarded with microwaves. To test the EmDrive, the researchers powered it with 40, 60, and 80 watts and found that it generated up to 58, 128, and 119 micronewtons of thrust, respectively. Given that this “anomaly” was still observed by White and his colleagues after accounting for error, this suggests that the results of the experiment show an EmDrive is indeed possible.

Based on these results, the researchers estimated that their contraption would be capable of generating approximately 1.2 millinewtons of thrust per kilowatt were they to scale up the power input. To put this in perspective, the Hall thruster—one of the most powerful in development and powered by ejecting plasma—generates about 60 millinewtons of thrust per kilowatt.

“The issue involved here is whether the experiment is seeing something real or not,” Jim Woodward, a physicist at California State-Fullerton, told Motherboard. “I know Paul [March] does clean work and to be honest, I suspect there may really be something there. But the result they're seeing can't actually be explained in terms of the theory they're proposing. So the question is: what is causing it?”

Per Newton, if you want to propel a rocket through space, you’re going to have to eject some material in the opposite direction of the rocket’s travel. But an EmDrive appears to generate a reaction without any action—so what gives?

A number of theories have been floated attempting to explain this ostensible violation of the bedrock of physics. White has been a proponent of the quantum vacuum explanation, which posits that the EmDrive is able to generate thrust by acting on virtual particle pairs that are generated by fluctuations in the quantum vacuum (in this theory, these vacuum fluctuations are created by the electromagnetic field generated by the EmDrive). In essence, the microwaves would be ‘pushing off’ of these virtual particles within the EmDrive cavity to generate the thrust that has been observed by White and his colleagues in EmDrive experiments.

Another leading explanation is that the EmDrive’s thrust is generated by radiation pressure, a position held by its inventor Roger Shawyer. On this view, when the microwave radiation enters the copper cavity, the radiation pushes against the walls of the EmDrive and generates thrust.

Yet, according to Woodward, both of these theories are unlikely to be correct for a simple reason: Physics doesn’t allow them.

By way of example, Woodward likened explaining the results seen at NASA purely in terms of microwave pressure to arguing that you can accelerate a car by getting in the driver’s seat and pushing on the windshield.

“Can any disposition of microwaves inside the cavity produce thrust?” said Woodward. “There's a simple answer to that question: No, it cannot. Conservation of momentum dictates that any purely electromagnetic system that is enclosed cannot produce thrust. This is for both quantum theory and classical electrodynamics. It's physically impossible.”

This is what led White to his quantum-vacuum theory: If the microwaves can’t push against the inside walls in the copper cone to generate thrust, then they must be pushing off of something else within the cone—like virtual particle/anti-particle pairs that exist in the quantum vacuum. The problem is that while the existence of the quantum vacuum has been experimentally proven to exist, physicists are in pretty strong agreement that it can’t be used as a medium to generate thrust.

Although White’s quantum vacuum theory is referenced as the theoretical explanation of the thrust observed in both the recently leaked NASA paper and the first NASA EmDrive paper from 2014, it has been debunked time and time again by leading physicists within the community.

EmDrive inventor Roger Shawyer demonstrates why he thinks radiation pressure explains the EmDrive thrust

“A theoretical construct related to the quantum vacuum is nonsense,” said Woodward. “There is no experimental evidence that suggests anything remotely like [White’s theory] is a reasonable way to view the vacuum. It's something that no serious quantum field theorist takes seriously as far as I know.”

Instead, Woodward thinks that the results of NASA’s EmDrive experiments can be explained without having to overturn the basic laws of physics.

“The Mach effect is the only possible way to explain this,” said Woodward. “If they are looking at a real anomalous signal, and you want to try to explain it with physics that is not nonsense, then that seems to be the only way to approach this.”

As the first person to theorize about Mach effects in 1990, Woodward should know. According to Woodward’s Mach effect theory, when a body of mass is accelerated, some of the force applied to that body does not result in kinetic energy but is stored as potential energy in the body. While the acceleration is changing the internal energy of the body changes as well, which manifests itself as a change in the resting mass of that body.

The accelerating body is essentially being squished between the force being applied in the direction of its acceleration and the pushback from the rest of the material in the universe via a gravitational field. These two oppositional forces change the internal energy of the accelerating body and no physical laws are being broken: Momentum is conserved, but small amounts of it are being temporarily “stored” in the accelerating body.

According to Woodward, this mass fluctuation effect could account for the thrust observed at the NASA Eagleworks lab. If the microwaves propagating in the EmDrive cone are applying force to the material that the cone is made of, then you might explain the thrust generated this way by the Mach effect outlined by Woodward.

Woodward has spent the last two decades building devices which have successfully demonstrated the Mach effect, although his theory is still far from mainstream within the physics community. Still, it is gaining ground as more successful experiments confirm his theory. March, for one, has worked with Woodward on a number of successful Mach effect experiments over the last decade, and, at September’s Exotic Propulsion conference in Estes Park, Colorado, three physicists besides Woodward claimed to have experimentally reproduced Woodward’s Mach effect results.

“In my view, it’s the only physics that I know and trust to not involve wishful thinking and magical fields,” said Woodward.

For now, all we know is that the paper leaked on Saturday is in fact legitimate—it has been peer reviewed and accepted for publication in the AIAA’s Journal of Propulsion and Power, where it is slated to appear in the December issue. What is unclear is how much the peer-reviewed version will have changed from the early release version leaked online.

According to Woodward, who saw a copy of the paper shortly after it had been accepted for peer review, the main difference between the accepted copy and the leaked early release is that the latter has way more theory trying to explain the results. Supposedly the AIAA would only accept the paper if White and his colleagues ditched the quantum vacuum theory and just published the results of their research without trying to explain it.

What remains to be seen is whether others can use Woodward’s Mach effect theory to reproduce the results seen in the NASA Eagleworks lab and thereby offer a compelling explanation for what White and his colleagues observed.

“Absent a convincing physical explanation that doesn't fly in the face of well-known principles of physics, you should hold in abeyance any judgment as to whether or not [the NASA results are] real,” said Woodward. “This stuff is much harder to do and get right than almost anybody who has not actually been in the trenches doing it really appreciates. The odds against anything being real in this business are very high.”

Now, this is getting a bit strange. I have taught Jerry English since he was 4 years old, and sadly when he hit junior high, his family moved back to south of Taiwan to be closer to other family.

Today I received a text message from his mom with a photo (above) from his junior high textbook. The photo just blew my mind. To get into the educational systems textbooks is both odd and amazing.

Its nice that the Taiwan Educational system included such important information into the textbooks, so that students can learn a diverse menu of subjects.

I do have two degrees in education, BA in elementary education and a Masters in Counselling education, so it personally feels great to be taken seriously by the school system in my own country.

Date of sighting: November 13, 2016
Location of sighting:  Laughlin, Nevada, USA
News source: MUFON #80486

I really like this witness account. It highly detailed and even includes a second witness account with it. This gives us a better perspective of what happened and what they saw. Nevada is a lower populated state, so UFOs will feel more comfortable to explore the area than say New York. With a total population of 7,323 its a perfect location to see a UFO more often than other locations.

Scott C. Waring

Eyewitness states:

We observed two dark objects pass over Riverside Casino as it was caught in lights shining up illuminating front of building.

Following the StarWorks UFO conference, Witness #2 (or W2) and I walked along the Colorado river front from the Aquarius Resort upriver to the Highway 163 bridge, along the river walk in front of the Laughlin casinos. We walked across the bridge and noticed the beautifully lit Riverfront casino and hotel. We were taking pictures of the scenery from the Arizona side of the river when W2 first noticed the object.

She first called my attention to the first object as we were looking across river toward casino with a "what's that?" and pointed toward the casino. I had been looking down at my iPhone, changing the settings on my camera app. I quickly looked up and saw a fleeting glimpse of the first object as it moved out of light beam.

We watched for a few moments more - about 10 seconds to a minute - when she said, "There's another one". At first I almost couldn't see it. Then I noticed same type of shape as the first one. Again, it was a fleeting glimpse, no more than a second or two.

Both objects were shadowy and indistinct, roughly crescent, boomerang or chevron shaped. I could only see the leading edge clearly, which was lighter in color and caught the hotel lights.

They traveled smoothly from N to S, over the Riverfront casino building, passing through the light beam.

Length of crescent was approximately half fingernail width at arm's length. There was no sound associated with the objects.

Second one moved same way as first, illuminated by hotel lights projecting up. It appeared to be passing directly over the building at approximately half-again the bldg height. (Using the Theodolite app on my iPhone, I measured it to be about 10 degrees elevation from horizontal).

I estimate the speed to be about twice to four times walking speed.

We observed each object for about one to two seconds and lost sight of each when it passed out of hotel light beam.

We talked about it for a few moments, trying to decide what it was.

We waited about five to ten more minutes for another of the objects to appear. I had my iPhone camera set to video with maximum zoom, but unfortunately we didn't see any more of the objects. We gave up and decided to walk back across the bridge toward the Nevada side of the river.

We decided as we were walking back across the bridge, that we would each write down our descriptions of the sighting before we discussed it further. We jotted quick notes on the sighting as we ate dinner in the Mexican restaurant across the street from the Riverfront Casino. This is my description from my notes that night.

Witness 2 Description (copied from her notes)
Observed two objects passing over the Riverfront Hotel.

At the time of the sighting, we were about a half mile from the hotels standing on the sidewalk along St. hwy 163 near a stoplight just across the river on the Arizona side. We stopped to take photos of where we were staying.

After the StarworksUSA conference ended, around 5pm, W1 and I took a walk along the river walkway. The moon was full and the temperature was in the 50's. I wanted to see the small helicopter that was landed (displayed) along the river walk. The helicopter was not there but we decided to keep walking.

The path led to the State Hwy 163 bridge over the Colorado river and we decided to walk across it. On the bridge we passed a man on a bicycle who appeared to be homeless. After we crossed the bridge I turned around and noticed the nice view of the hotels, we stopped walking and took pictures. Then I noticed something moving above the Riverside hotel/casino in the light and pointed it out to W1. He saw it as well.

I saw a dark, curved boomerang shaped object. What appeared to be the back underside was clearly defined but I could not make out the far side of the object against the dark sky. The lights from the top of the hotel lit the underside and front edge as it moved down river. The edge was well defined and easy to see. Then as we watched, another one appeared a bit lower and moved in the same manner. There were no lights or sound.

We observed a helicopter landing at the airport about 2 miles away, 10 minutes prior, and also saw two shooting stars after seeing the objects. We later observed other air traffic but nothing was as low as what we saw.

Venus was also in the sky.

Note: There was a man in the riverside park below us walking his large dog, where we stopped to take photos. He may have seen the objects as well.

Supermassive Black Hole Hides Inside Its Own "Exhaust"

Artist's impression of the black hole at the center of Messier 77.
Supermassive Black Hole Hides Inside Its Own "Exhaust"

So this is why black holes are so shy.

Alasdair Wilkins

The galaxy Messier 77 is a lot like our Milky Way. Both are what’s known as barred spiral galaxies, meaning massive groups of stars are arranged in huge arms extending like spirals from the center. And at the center of both galaxies is a supermassive black hole a million or even a billion times more massive than the Sun.

The center of Messier 77 is what’s known as an active galactic nucleus. This means that the accretion disk — the accumulation of cold gas and other matter around the black hole — is the source of much higher than expected emissions from across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. These AGN are hugely useful in searching for ever more distant objects in the cosmos. Some of these AGN are hidden inside thick, donut-shaped clumps of gas known as a torus. Actually, it’s very possible that all AGN have a torus around them, but only some are hidden relative to our Earthbound perspective.

“We know from various observations that some AGN are hidden by colder dust clouds from our point of view on earth,” Jack Gallimore, an astrophysicist at Bucknell University, told Inverse. “The unifying model arose that all AGN are surrounded by a donut of cold gas. If the donut is viewed from the side, we see a ‘Type 2,’ or hidden, AGN. If our view looks down the hole, we see a ‘Type 1’ AGN, that is, we see the accretion disk directly.”

These donuts of cold gas provide a natural cloak for supermassive black holes to hide inside, yet it’s unclear how these naturally unstable clumps of gas remain as they do without changing shape or falling into the black hole.

“Nobody knew how the donut of cold, dust gas, or the torus, stayed puffed up,” said Gallimore. “Cold gas donuts are not stable: They should collapse to a flattened disk.”

We’re so used to thinking about black holes as gobbling up any matter that gets too close that it’s more than a little surprising to hear the answer Gallimore and his fellow researchers have found: The black holes themselves fling matter from their accretion disks back out toward the gas donut, like an engine giving off exhaust.

Gallimore and fellow researchers used the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in South America to detect clouds of carbon monoxide pulling away from the outer portion of the accretion disk around the Messier 77 black hole. The energies of the superheated inner accretion disk created magnetic fields that were then in turn able to accelerate these clouds to speeds much faster than would normally be expected — say from a normal top speed of 100 kilometers per second to a whopping 400. That’s quite a bit faster than the disk’s normal rotational speed, which lets the gases escape the disk and move further away from the black hole.

“We’re learning more about the accretion disk and how the accretion disk feeds the black hole,” Gallimore told Inverse, saying evidence of this feedback from black hole and its accretion disk to the rest of the galaxy could mean the black hole plays a more active role in the galaxy’s development than we thought. “We will also learn something about how the black hole might feedback to the host galaxy and affect its evolution, although we’re not there yet with this particular project.”

While this latest research has revealed the interactions between black hole, accretion disk, and surrounding gas torus, Gallimore is optimistic that more study from the telescope in Atacama will reveal still more surprises about the complicated lives of black holes.

“Stay tuned to ALMA,” he said. “There are many researchers pursuing this question about NGC 1068 and other AGNs. Looking at the molecular, cooler gas is going to reveal surprises.”

Mysterious Flashes of Light Help Scientists Map the Universe

The brightest FRB ever recorded was discovered using CSIRO's Parkes Radio Telescope.

Mysterious Flashes of Light Help Scientists Map the Universe

FRBs with a side of gamma rays, coming right up!

Amy Thompson

Aclass of mysterious radio waves blasting from space may be more powerful than anyone expected. Called fast radio bursts, or FRBs, they’ve been a perpetual source of confusion for astronomers, who have no clue from where they originate, or how and why they are created. Nevertheless, they still have some usefulness: scientists just detected another FRB coming from deep space, and it’s the brightest one yet. In another first, astronomers have observed one of these enigmatic blasts occurring together with a pack of gamma rays. This means they could have the same source, and it could be a billion times more energetic than previously predicted.

FRBs are high-intensity radio signals, which race through the universe at incredible speeds. The signals are brief, lasting only a few milliseconds each — which makes them extremely difficult to detect and pinpoint. The first FRB was observed in 2001, and since then astronomers have only detected 17. With limited information, all we seem to know is that they originate from outside the Milky Way.

Even though less than 20 examples have been detected, astronomers believe thousands of these puzzling flashes illuminate the cosmos on a daily basis. Some experts think colliding neutron stars could be the driving force behind these mysterious blasts, and there could be several factors causing the bursts. No one can say for sure yet.

The radio pulse of the recent FRB. The brightness varies due to variations in the cosmic web.
The radio pulse of the recent FRB. The brightness varies due to variations in the cosmic web.

However, the researchers can agree that the recent flash — captured by CSIRO’s Parkes radio telescope in New South Wales — one was one of the brightest ever seen. Despite flashing for only a fleeting moment, all FRBs are packed with crucial information. However, the most recent FRB was unique as it contained information about the cosmic web — aka the swirling mass of gasses and magnetic fields located in between galaxies.

“This particular FRB is the first detected to date to contain detailed information about the cosmic web — regarded as the fabric of the Universe,” Dr. Ryan Shannon of ICRAR-Curtin University explained in a news release. “It’s also unique because its travel path can be reconstructed to a precise line of sight and back to an area of space about a billion light years away that contains only a small number of possible home galaxies.”

The location of the FRB 150807.
The location of the FRB 150807.

Since this particular FRB was so bright (thanks to the gamma ray boost), the research team was able to estimate its origins in the sky more precisely than any other FRB. They estimate its origins could be in a galaxy named VHS7, which is roughly a billion light-years away. There are a handful of galaxies in that region, and astronomers cannot say for sure just yet, but VHS7 looks like the best bet.

While the team won’t be able to definitively determine what causes FRBs or pinpoint exactly where they came from, this discovery will be a great tool to help analyze what lies between us and the vicinity of VHS7. Astronomers can use it as a probe to study the vast cosmic web, enabling researchers to better understand how galaxies form, and how the universe itself is structured.

Strange ‘burning’ UFO spotted in the sky above capital city – The Aliens Are here!

mystery-surrounds-craft-spotted-burning-in-sky-over-city-of-peru

A mysterious ‘burning’ UFO has been filmed travelling across the sky above a capital city.

Residents of Lima, Peru, were left stunned as the orange light floated slowly through the air in the slightly darkened sky.

The video, which lasts a full minute and was revealed by Peruvian media last night, has left observers mystified.

To add to the mystery, people in other parts of the South American country, including the highlands to the southeast of Lima and the area near the Amazon rainforest, also spotted strange lights in the sky.

One silly theory that many researchers have now shunned is that the lights could be the high-altitude balloons used by Google’s Project Loon, an initiative that provides Internet access to people in remote and rural areas.

The balloons float in the stratosphere about 18km, 11 miles, above the Earth’s surface and do contain lights.

Is this where aliens from Mars relax? British conspiracy theorist spots a SOFA on Red Planet

However, there are a number of people who believe Peru is a regular stop-off for aliens who are drawn to the country by its many ancient sites, including the world famous Machu Picchu citadel in the Andes Mountains.

U.I.P SUMMARY

Lets get real people this is definitely NO weather balloon or ‘swamp gas’ in fact when you watch the video closely you can clearly see that the ufo/orb appears to be moving an a controlled manner!!

Peru appears to be a bit of a hotspot for ufo’s and even the governments airforce have confirmed engagement with unknown craft in the skies above their country!

UFO sightings are drastically on the rise and its time to wake the masses and get the steeple people of this planet to open their eyes and look up!!

The Bermuda Triangle

The Bermuda Triangle

screen-shot-2016-03-10-at-2-58-31-pm

Also known as the Devil’s Triangle, the Bermuda Triangle is believed to be the devil’s lair as most of the unusual disappearances in the triangle had no records of human error, equipment failures or natural disasters

The term “Bermuda Triangle” was initially coined by writer Vincent Gaddis in 1964 in the men’s pulp magazine Argosy. Gaddis was also the one who proposed that Atlantis was real and that it was somehow connected to the triangle.

Let’s have a look at some of the most famous incidents:

1. Accounts of weird activity in the area were already being recorded way back during the days of exploration and early travel. In fact, Christopher Columbus wrote about a large fireball dropping from the sky and into the ocean during one of his journeys in the region in 1492. Columbus claimed what he saw caused his compass to malfunction.

2. One of the most famous Bermuda Triangle mystery would have to be the story of the Mary Celeste. Also known as the Ghost Ship, it was found in full sail on December 4, 1872 without a single passenger on board

3. A large French ship sailing from Hamburg to Havana was discovered intact with all of its cargo, but nobody on board, except for a canary, a cat and some fowl. Whatever happened to the crew remains a mystery…

abandoned-ship

4. On one of its trips, the large American ship Ellen Austin, came across another vessel sailing in the Bermuda Triangle with no one on board. Some of its crew transferred to the other vessel to try and salvage it, but it never actualized due to a storm. On another trip, the Ellen Austin came across once again with the ship and sent some of its crew to scavenge it. No one was on board and few days later, it disappeared again

5. The Deering was found aground off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina in 1921 with its entire crew missing. The ships log and navigation equipment were gone, the crew’s personal effects and lifeboats had also disappeared, leaving investigators completely baffled.

6. The disappearance of the USS Cyclops and its 306 man crew back in 1910 is one of the Bermuda Triangle’s most mysterious incidents. Its disappearance is the single largest loss of life in U.S Naval history not directly related to combat.

uss-cyclops

7. Newlyweds Frank and Romina Leone went finishing off the coast of Boynton Beach, Florida in their new boat on June 18, 2003. When the couple failed to turn up for work the next day, family and friends began to worry. U.S coastguards were sent out to search the waters of Miami, but neither their boat or bodies were ever found.

8. On January 30, 1948, the Star Tiger left Santa Maria, Azores with 25 passengers on board. It was meant to arrive in Bermuda at 5 a.m, but at some point just before its arrival, the radio operator lost contact with the pilot. Hours later, the plane has disappeared out of sight. A fleet of 26 aircraft were sent out to search of the Star Tiger, which was never found.

9. During the same year as the Star Tiger’s mysterious disappearance, a Douglas Dakota DC-3 flight took off from Puerto Rico, heading for Miami, Florida. Twenty minutes before landing, the flight disappeared from radars and was never to be seen or heard of again. Two more cases very similar cases have occurred since.

10. On October 30, 1954, Flight 441 took off with 42 passengers making their way to Lajes in the Azores Islands. The plane was about 400 miles off the coast line when contact was lost. Flight 441 never arrived at its destination and disappeared without a trace.

11. Five ill fated avenger bomber planes disappeared without a trace on December 5, 1945 while on a training mission. Frequent communication had taken place between the trainees and their flight leader, Charles Taylor during the mission. To make the situation even weirder, the five rescue craft sent after them also disappeared.

12. While flying over the Bermuda Triangle in 1970, American pilot Bruce Gernon experiencing something that he can’t quite logically explain. As he was flying, he flew through mysterious donut shaped hole that formed into a swirling cloud tunnel. At the end of the tunnel the pilot witnessed what he could only describe as an electronic fog, which caused his aeronautical instruments to malfunction. Had he just gone through some sort of time portal?

13. Cary Gordon Trantham was flying home after spending time with her daughter in Florida when she experienced something very strange. While flying over the open water at night, she suddenly flew through a thick bed of fog, which left her flying in pitch darkness. She claims not to have been able to navigate herself as her plane’s instruments went haywire. Lucky escape!

12-3

14. On March 12, 2009, passengers aboard a flight spotted strange lights in the skies over what looked like a vortex in the sea. The unexplained sighting was even photographed by naval cameras who claimed the object floated above water for an hour before disappearing.

6-3

15. On November 3, 1978, Irving Rivers’ Eastern Caribbean Airways plane disappeared from radars just moments after controllers at the airport in Saint Thomas cleared it for landing. The plane was less than two miles from the airport when it disappeared.

bermuda20

16. It was on January 30, 1948 when Tudor Star Tiger left Santa Maria, Azores with 25 passengers on board. The plane was supposed to arrive in Bermuda at 5 a.m., but it never came. Hours after its supposed arrival, a fleet of 26 aircraft searched for days for the lost aircraft, but never found a single trace of the Star Tiger.

1948

17. A couple of UFOs were spotted on the horizons of the Bermuda Triangle back in 2014 by passengers aboard a cruise ship. The UFOs were described as being bright orange, with lights that gradually dimmed and disappeared after a few moments

ufo

18. The Witchcraft was a luxury cabin boat owned by hotel mogul, Dan Burack. On December 22, 1967, Burack and a friend set out about a mile out of the Miami Coastline to view the Christmas lights when the coast guard received a distress call from him. When the coast guard arrived at the site, no boat was to be found.

witchcraft

19. Joshua Slocum was dubbed as the very first man to sail solo around the world in 1895. Although he was considered as one of the best sailors of his time, Joshua Slocum apparently disappeared from the face of the earth in 1909 after allegedly passing through the Devil’s Triangle. He sailed with his old fishing boat called “The Spray.”

josh

UIP Summary:

This is only a small list of the mysterious disappearances and the governments must know what really is going on in the Bermuda Triangle! Not many people have survived this strange phenomenon, but the few that have tell the same story which makes me believe that there is definitely a portal in that part of the world.

I truly hope this is the case, as it would be wonderful to know that all of these people who disappeared are actually living a happy life in some other dimensions

Death Dive! Comet Plunges into the Sun at Mind-Blowing Speed

ESA and NASA’s Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, or SOHO, saw a bright comet plunge toward the sun on Nov. 16-17, 2016, at nearly 1.3 million miles per hour.

Like most sungrazing comets, this comet was torn apart and vaporized by the intense forces near the sun.

The disk of the sun is represented by the dark circle in the video clips.

Electronic E.T.: Intelligent Aliens Are Likely Machines

Electronic E.T.: Intelligent Aliens Are Likely Machines

Electronic E.T.: Intelligent Aliens Are Likely Machines
We often imagine intelligent aliens to be humanoid, but this is unlikely for a number of reasons.
Credit: Albert Ziganshin / Shutterstock.com

Any intelligent aliens that humans manage to contact probably won't look much like you or me, or the squid-like creatures in the new film "Arrival."

If an extraterrestrial species becomes advanced enough to send signals Earthlings can pick up, it will likely shed its traditional biological trappings and become a form of machine intelligence in rather short order, said veteran alien hunter Seth Shostak.

To make his case, Shostak pointed to the path that humanity appears to be on. The human species invented the radio around 1900 and the computer in 1945, and it's already manufacturing relatively cheap devices with greater computing power than the human brain. [13 Ways to Hunt Intelligent Alien Life]

The development of true, strong artificial intelligence (AI) is therefore not too far off, experts have said. The famous futurist Ray Kurzweil, for example, has pegged 2045 as the year this world-changing "singularity" will hit.

"But maybe it takes to 2100, or 2150, or 2250. It doesn't matter," Shostak said in September during a presentation at the Dent:Space conference in San Francisco. "The point is, any society that invents radio, so we can hear them, within a few centuries, they've invented their successors. And I think that's important, because the successors are machines."

AI will interface with people's bodies for a while, but eventually humans will abandon the wetware and go fully digital, Shostak predicted.

Are we the only intelligent life in the universe? See how we intend to find out in this full infographic.

"It'll be like — you build a four-cylinder engine. You put it in a horse to get a faster horse. And pretty soon you say, 'Look, let's get rid of the horse part and just build a Maserati,'" said Shostak, an astronomer at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute in Mountain View, California. "So that's probably what's going to happen."

Humans' machine selves will get smarter and more capable incredibly quickly, he added. Humanity's present intelligence is the result of 4 billion years of Darwinian evolution, which uses random variation as its raw material and is not directed toward any particular goal. But the evolution of machine intelligence will be engineered and efficient, Shostak said.

"Once you invent a thinking machine, you say, 'Invent something better than you are,' and you build that. 'Design something better than you are,' and you build that, and so forth," he said.

This idea has serious implications for the search for intelligent alien life. Unlike Earth organisms, super-advanced extraterrestrial machines would not require water or other chemicals to survive, so they would not be tied to their ancestors' home worlds tightly at all, Shostak said. And journeying tremendous distances would not be a big deal to these machines, provided they could access enough energy and raw materials to keep repairing themselves over the millennia, he said.

"We continue to look in the directions of star systems that we think have habitable words, that have planets where biology could cook up and eventually turn into something clever like you guys," he told the Dent:Space audience. "But I don't think it's going to be that way."

Shostak said he isn't counseling his fellow SETI astronomers to stop investigating potentially Earth-like planets such as Proxima b, a recently discovered world that lies just 4.2 light-years away. (And simple life-forms could still inhabit such worlds even if their most intelligent inhabitants went digital and departed long ago, Shostak said.) But it may be a good idea to expand the search to regions of space that would seemingly be attractive to digital life-forms, he said — for example, places with lots of available energy, such as the centers of galaxies.

"That may be where the really clever beings are," Shostak said.

"Maybe what we ought to do is look at places on the sky that connect two places where there is a lot of energy," in an attempt to intercept communications between alien machines, Shostak added.

"This is my message to you: We're looking for analogues of ourselves, but I don't know that that's the majority of the intelligence in the universe," Shostak concluded. "I'm willing to bet it's not."

The European Gaia space observatory is hard at work mapping our Milky Way Galaxy in unprecedented detail. Case in point: this virtual Milky Way map unveiled by Gaia mission scientists at the European Space Agency.

ESA launched the Gaia spacecraft in 2013 to make the most precise 3D map of stars in the Milky Way, as well as a map of its neighbors' stars – the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. Earlier this year, ESA scientists unveiled Gaia's first billion-star map of the Milky Way. On Thursday (Nov. 10), the space agency also released this new virtual map based on data from the spacecraft. [Gaia's Milky Way Mapping Mission in Pictures]

"These engineering data have been accumulated over 18 months and combined to create a 'map' of the observed star densities, from which a beautiful and ghostly virtual image of our magnificent Milky Way galaxy can be discerned, showing the attendant globular clusters and Magellanic clouds," ESA officials wrote in an image description. "Where there are more stars, as in the Galactic center, the map is brighter; where there are fewer, the map is darker. The map includes brightness data corresponding to several million stars," they wrote in the same description.

The $1 billion (740 million euros) Gaia spacecraft is designed to create a high-resolution map of 1 billion stars in the Milky Way over the course of a five-year mission. The spacecraft is making its observations from a gravitationally stable point, called the sun-Earth Lagrange Point 2, or L2, about 930,000 miles (1.5 million kilometers) from Earth.

Faraway Star Is Roundest Natural Object Ever Seen
The star Kepler 11145123 is the roundest natural object ever measured in the universe. Stellar oscillations imply a difference in radius between the equator and the poles of only 3 km. This star is significantly more round than the Sun.

A star 5,000 light-years from Earth is the closest thing to a perfect sphere that has ever been observed in nature, a new study reports.

Stars, planets and other round celestial bodies bulge slightly at their equators due to centrifugal force. Generally speaking, the faster these objects spin, the greater the force, and the larger the bulge.

For example, the sun rotates once every 27 days, and an imaginary line drawn through its center at the equator is about 12 miles (20 kilometers) longer than a similar line drawn from pole to pole. The equatorial diameter of Earth, which completes a rotation every 24 hours, is 26 miles (42 km) longer than the polar diameter, even though Earth is much smaller than the sun. [Solar Quiz: How Well Do You Know the Sun?]

But the distant star, known as Kepler 11145123, has Earth, the sun and every other object that's ever been measured beat in terms of roundness, study team members said.

The researchers studied Kepler 11145123's natural oscillations, as observed by NASA's Kepler space telescope over a period of 51 months, from 2009 through 2013. (Kepler was designed to detect exoplanets by noting the tiny brightness dips that are caused when they cross their stars' faces, so the spacecraft is very sensitive to light fluctuations.)

The team, led by Laurent Gizon from the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research and the University of Göttingen in Germany, then used this information to determine the star's size. This technique is known as asteroseismology, because it allows astronomers to probe stellar interiors in much the same way that geologists use earthquakes to study our planet's insides.

The researchers found that Kepler 11145123's equatorial and polar diameters differ by a mere 3.7 miles (6 km), even though the star is 1.86 million miles (3 million km) in diameter — about twice as wide as the sun.

"This makes Kepler 11145123 the roundest natural object ever measured, even more round than the sun," Gizon said in a statement.

Why is the star so round? It rotates about three times more slowly than the sun, but that's probably not the whole story. Magnetic fields can also help flatten stars, so part of the answer may lie in Kepler 11145123's magnetic environment, astronomers said.

There's no guarantee that Kepler 11145123 will keep its roundness record forever. Gizon and his colleagues plan to study other stars using their asteroseismological techniques, which they said have delivered unprecedented precision and may therefore open up new lines of inquiry.

"It will be particularly interesting to see how faster rotation and a stronger magnetic field can change a star’s shape," Gizon said. "An important theoretical field in astrophysics has now become observational."

The new study was published today (Nov. 16) in the journal Science Advances.

Pluto's Wandering Heart Hints at Subsurface Ocean

Pluto's Wandering Heart Hints at Subsurface Ocean

Pluto's Wandering Heart Hints at Subsurface Ocean

Pluto's famous heart-shaped feature caused the dwarf planet to roll over the eons, and this reorientation probably wouldn't have been possible without a subsurface ocean, new research suggests.

The left lobe of Pluto's "heart" is a 600-mile-wide (1,000 kilometers) plain called Sputnik Planitia (formerly known as Sputnik Planum), which astronomers think is an enormous impact crater. This basin has been filling with nitrogen ice over the years and now contains huge amounts of the stuff. Indeed, observations by NASA's New Horizons spacecraft, which flew by Pluto last year, suggest that Sputnik Planitia's ice may be up to 6 miles (10 km) thick.

Sputnik Planitia is aligned nicely with Pluto's "tidal axis" — the line along which the gravitational pull from the dwarf planet's largest moon, Charon, is the strongest. And that's probably no coincidence, according to two new studies, both of which were published online today (Nov. 16) in the journal Nature. [Pluto Has Ocean Beneath Its Surface? Scientists Think So (Video)]

In the first study, James Keane, a doctoral student at the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, and his colleagues modeled what happened as nitrogen ice accumulated in Sputnik Planitia. The results were dramatic.

"Once enough ice has piled up, maybe a hundred meters thick, it starts to overwhelm the planet's shape, which dictates the planet's orientation," Keane said in a statement. "And if you have an excess of mass in one spot on the planet, it wants to go to the equator. Eventually, over millions of years, it will drag the whole planet over."

pluto-reorient.gif?1479268631?interpolation=lanczos-none&downsize=*:1400
This animation shows how Pluto reoriented in response to volatile ices filling Sputnik Planitia (the left lobe of Pluto's heart). Sputnik Planitia started northwest of its present position, and as it filled with ices, the tides from Charon (Pluto's largest moon) caused the entire dwarf planet to reorient.

Credit: James Tuttle Keane. Maps of Pluto and Charon by NASA/Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory/Southwest Research Institute.

This tumble brought Sputnik Planitia to the southeast, until the plain faced directly away from Charon as it does today. The team's models predicted this very orientation: In this spot, near the tidal axis, the additional mass causes the least wobble in Pluto's spin, the researchers said. (Pluto and Charon are tidally locked, meaning the two bodies always show the same face to each other, just as Earth's moon always shows just one side to Earth.)

Pluto's reorientation would have stressed the dwarf planet's crust, leading to a network of faults and fractures on the surface, Keane and his colleagues report. And New Horizons spotted just such a network, whose characteristics match those predicted by the team's models, they said.

Those models assume that Pluto harbors a subsurface ocean of liquid water — a notion bolstered by the second study, which was led by Francis Nimmo, a professor of Earth and planetary sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Nimmo and his team determined that the odds of Sputnik Planitia occurring in its present location, so close to the tidal axis, purely by chance were just 5 percent. So they, too, believe that a substantial reorientation has taken place.

The researchers suggested that the impact that created the basin weakened the crust overlying a buried ocean, causing some of the water to rise close to the surface. This action, along with the deposition of nitrogen ice in Sputnik Planitia, would have created enough of a "positive mass anomaly" to roll the dwarf planet, Nimmo and his colleagues wrote.

It's hard to imagine Pluto reorienting in this way if it didn't have an ocean, Nimmo said. For example, the team's calculations suggest that Sputnik Planitia's ice layer would have to be 25 miles (40 km) thick if no ocean existed.

"Our view is that 40 kilometers' thickness of nitrogen ice is not that likely," Nimmo told Space.com. "So if you want to have another source of dense material down there, then water seemed like a very natural explanation, because water is a lot denser than ice." ['Land' on Pluto's Icy Plains in This Amazing New NASA Video]

The team also considered the possibility that rock migrated in to make up the extra mass, but that explanation doesn't seem likely, either, Nimmo said.

"The rock is so far down there, and it's also pretty strong," he said. "So it's hard to figure out how that rock would get moved around in the way that you would need."

Other research groups also have suggested that Pluto may harbor a subsurface ocean, using other lines of evidence. One such argument points to the dwarf planet's surface fractures, which may be the result of this ocean gradually freezing over time — a prospect also raised by Keane and his colleagues in their paper. (Water expands as it freezes, which would lead to stresses in overlying rock or ice.) In addition, Nimmo said, Pluto doesn't have an equatorial bulge — and bodies with oceans can't maintain such a bulge.

"All these lines of argument are pointing in the same direction," Nimmo said.

This cutaway image of Pluto shows a section through the area of Sputnik Planitia, with dark blue representing a subsurface ocean and light blue for the frozen crust.

If Pluto does have an ocean, how has it managed to avoid freezing up entirely over the past 4.5 billion years? Pluto is big enough that it may have retained a substantial amount of internal heat, Nimmo said. And the dwarf planet's water may contain significant amounts of ammonia or other substances that act as an antifreeze, he added.

Astronomers think subsurface oceans exist on the Saturn moons Enceladusand Titan; the Jovian satellites Europa, Ganymede and Callisto; and a number of other solar system bodies. Indeed, such buried water may be abundant in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of frigid objects beyond Neptune's orbit, Nimmo said.

"My guess is that, on big Kuiper Belt objects, these kinds of oceans are pretty common," Nimmo said. "One of the lessons of the last 20 years is that oceans pop up in all kinds of unexpected places."

Stephen Hawking: Humanity Only Has 1,000 Years Left on Earth

Stephen Hawking: Humanity Only Has 1,000 Years Left on Earth

IN BRIEF
Because of systemic issues like habitat destruction, antibiotic resistance, increasing weapons ammunitions, and overpopulation, humanity's time on Earth may be rather limited. According to Hawking, our only hope may be alien worlds.

A PROBLEMATIC PLANET

Physicist Stephen Hawking has warned humanity that we probably only have about 1,000 years left on Earth, and the only thing that could save us from certain extinction is setting up colonies elsewhere in the Solar System.

“[W]e must … continue to go into space for the future of humanity,” Hawking said in a lecture at the University of Cambridge this week. “I don’t think we will survive another 1,000 years without escaping beyond our fragile planet.”

The fate of humanity appears to have been weighing heavily on Hawking of late – he’s also recently cautioned that artificial intelligence (AI) will be “either the best, or the worst, thing ever to happen to humanity”.

Stephen Hawking via Getty Stephen Hawking via Getty

Given that humans are prone to making the same mistakes over and over again – even though we’re obsessed with our own history and should know better – Hawking suspects that “powerful autonomous weapons” could have serious consequences for humanity.

As Heather Saul from The Independent reports,Hawking has estimated that self-sustaining human colonies on Mars are not going to be a viable option for another 100 years or so, which means we need to be “very careful” in the coming decades.

Without even taking into account the potentially devastating effects of climate change, global pandemics brought on by antibiotic resistance, and nuclear capabilities of warring nations, we could soon be sparring with the kinds of enemies we’re not even close to knowing how to deal with.

Late last year, Hawking added his name to a coalition of more than 20,000 researchers and experts, including Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, and Noam Chomsky, calling for a ban on anyone developing autonomous weapons that can fire on targets without human intervention.

As the founders of OpenAI, Musk’s new research initiative dedicated to the ethics of artificial intelligence, said last year, our robots are perfectly submissive now, but what happens when we remove one too many restrictions?

What happens when you make them so perfect, they’re just like humans, but better, just like we’ve always wanted?

“AI systems today have impressive but narrow capabilities,” the founders said.

“It seems that we’ll keep whittling away at their constraints, and in the extreme case they will reach human performance on virtually every intellectual task. It’s hard to fathom how much human-level AI could benefit society, and it’s equally hard to imagine how much it could damage society if built or used incorrectly.”

And that’s not even the half of it.

Imagine we’re dealing with unruly robots that are so much smarter and so much stronger than us, and suddenly, we get the announcement – aliens have picked up on the signals we’ve been blasting out into the Universe and made contract.

Great news, right? Well, think about it for a minute. In the coming decades, Earth and humanity isn’t going to look so crash-hot.

We’ll be struggling to mitigate the effects of climate change, which means we’ll be running out of land to grow crops, our coasts will be disappearing, and anything edible in the sea is probably being cooked by the rapidly rising temperatures.

If the aliens are aggressive, they’ll see a weakened enemy with a habitable planet that’s ripe for the taking. And even if they’re non-aggressive, we humans certainly are, so we’ll probably try to get a share of what they’ve got, and oops: alien wars.

As Hawking says in his new online film, Stephen Hawking’s Favourite Places, “I am more convinced than ever that we are not alone,” but if the aliens are finding us, “they will be vastly more powerful and may not see us as any more valuable than we see bacteria”.

Clearly, we need a back-up plan, which is why Hawking’s 1,000-year deadline to destruction comes with a caveat – we might be able to survive our mistakes if we have somewhere else in the Solar System to jettison ourselves to.

BUT WE’RE NOT FINISHED JUST YET

That all might sound pretty dire, but Hawking says we still have a whole lot to feel optimistic about, describing 2016 as a “glorious time to be alive and doing research into theoretical physics”.

While John Oliver might disagree that there’s anything good about 2016 at all, Hawking says we need to “Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet.”

“Try to make sense of what you see, wonder about what makes the Universe exist. Be curious,” he told students at the Cambridge lecture. “However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don’t just give up.”

Professor Stephen Hawking: Humanity will not survive another 1,000 years if we don’t escape our planet

Professor Stephen Hawking has warned humanity will not survive another 1,000 years on Earth unless the human race finds another planet to live on.

The celebrated theoretical physicist and cosmologist painted a grave picture of the future while delivering a lecture on the universe and the origins of human beings at the Oxford Union debating society on Monday.

Professor Hawking, 74, reflected on the understanding of the universe garnered from breakthroughs over the past five decades, describing 2016 as a "glorious time to be alive and doing research into theoretical physics".

Climate change: It's "game over" for planet earth

“Our picture of the universe has changed a great deal in the last 50 years and I am happy if I have made a small contribution,“ he went on. ”The fact that we humans, who are ourselves mere fundamental particles of nature, have been able to come this close to understanding the laws that govern us and the universe is certainly a triumph.”

Highlighting “ambitious” experiments that will give an even more precise picture of the universe, he continued: “We will map the position of millions of galaxies with the help of [super] computers like Cosmos. We will better understand our place in the universe.

“Perhaps one day we will be able to use gravitational waves to look right back into the heart of the Big Bang.

Prachtige ufo boven Tennessee

PRACHTIGE UFO BOVEN TENNESSEE, USA

Date of discovery: unknown
Location of discovery: cave in Peru

The details are a little vague, but Brian Foerester of Youtube investigated some small bodies found in the back of a caver in Peru. The bodies look thousands of years old and they resemble an alien with a height of about 1-2 feet tall. Much like the blueish grey alien body in the old (real) KGB leaked video of a UFO crash back in the 1968. This is a short alien. So they are small, does that make them existing impossible? The shortest human in the world was 21 and a half inches. Did he exist? Of course he did, and of course intelligent aliens can too. Great video by UFOvni2012.

Two Unidentified Flying Objects Recorded On Video Passing Across The Supermoon

Two Unidentified Flying Objects Recorded On Video Passing Across The Supermoon

supermoon-ufo

There was an increased interest in the moon recently as it came closer to Earth. However, one man claimed he noticed more than the supermoon when viewing it in Surprise, Arizona on Saturday evening.

According to YouTube username Rondomon, two strange objects passed by the moon on November 12.

The cameraman claimed he caught two UFOs while taking video of the supermoon with NexStar 6se telescope.

He said that he zoomed in the supermoon and walked away, but this was the time UFOs started their flyby. He described the UFOs to have distortion surrounding them, which he speculated to be a bending light.

The device he was using was a Sony handy cam with 5x optical zoom, 38x telescope magnification, maxview 40 lens, and manual focus at .9m.

Many UFO enthusiasts called the UFOs odd. They described them as solid because the light of the moon can’t be seen through them.

In the video comment section, some viewers agreed that the mysterious objects are UFOs. One viewer even claimed that she also saw a UFO passed by the supermoon on November 13 in Phoenix, Arizona. She reportedly saw it with her naked eye and it lo

oked like the UFO in the video posted on YouTube. Her boyfriend reportedly described it as if it was a little black ant crawling on the moon. The girl depicted the sighting as so strange but very real.

YouTube username Jugganaut7 thinks that they are just leaves blowing in the wind, but admits calling them UFOs is in the context of UFO definition.

UFO Spotted In A Country With Many Ancient Sites

UFO Spotted In A Country With Many Ancient Sites

ufo

Residents of Lima, Peru were left stunned after seeing and filming a mysterious burning UFO moving across the sky above the capital city. The orange unidentified flying object flew through the slightly darkened sky.

The video that made the rounds online lasts a full minute showing the strange lights in the air. According to Peruvian media, observers left mystified. Interestingly, residents in other areas of the South American country also spotted the same UFO, including those who live in the highlands to the southeast of Lima, as well as near the Amazon rainforest.

One explanation is that the light could be from Google’s Project Loon, a high-altitude balloon used to provide Internet access to people in remote areas.

Google’s balloons float in the stratosphere and do have lights.

Other people believe that Peru is a favorite destination of aliens because of the country’s ancient sites, such as the Machu Picchu citadel in the Andes Mountains.

The X-Files and UFO History: Reel vs. Real

The X-Files and UFO History: Reel vs. Real

The X-Files took believers seriously. We look at how the series mined UFO myths and played off our fears and suspicions.

x-files-roswell.png?itok=1UvQZpXL

Anyone driving across a barren interstate freeway at night has likely looked up into the sky and wondered about the possibility of witnessing the unexpected. For people who have held beliefs in extra-terrestrials or alien craft, the entire history of the UFO phenomenon is an obsession that goes beyond mere fascination.

Books, movies, and television help alien seekers conceptualize what an encounter could potentially look like. Perhaps no show has flown as close to the sun with depicting real-life accounts of the UFO phenomenon than The X-Files, the seminal sci-fi series from Fox and Chris Carter.

When Carter’s series made its return to Fox for a revival in 2016, it honed in on a new extra-terrestrial threat for the digital age. Ever since they successfully blurred the line between fiction and real world events when the pilot debuted in 1993, The X-Files has depicted triangle-shaped crafts, or disc shaped crafts of various sizes, or even more recently in the new episodes, ARV’s - Alien Reproduction Vehicle’s. But the series drew from real world belief in the phenomenon, as well as the belief in global conspiracies.

The Basis for The X-Files

Chris Carter’s pre-pilot research revealed something startling. He read a Roper Organization survey stated that three percent of the U.S. population believes they have been abducted by aliens. When Carter would later direct the “Duane Barry” episode, a fill-in crew member revealed his brother-in-law believed he had been abducted. Carter’s persistent mantra in the early years was that the show had to be “scientifically plausible.” This meant that a lot of the research was pulled from real UFOlogy archives.

One key plot element in the series has been the Roswell incident, which the Deep Throat character first mentioned in season one’s final episode “The Erlenmeyer Flask,” when he comments that “Roswell was a smokescreen.” It was a comment that would be mirrored by the old man in “My Struggle I” from the new event series.

The Roswell incident from 1947 in New Mexico has remained the holy-grail source for the subject, touching on most of people’s concerns. As The X-Files heavily played up in the first episode of season 10, “My Struggle,” they showed the military retrieving wreckage from an unidentified craft, and using intimidation, misdirection, deniability, or direct threats to hide from the public secret military technology, or the existence of extra-terrestrials. What is known about the incident is that an event took place in July of 1947. The public might not have known about it had it not been for a military press release on Tuesday, July 8th that confirmed a disc-shaped object that “landed” on a Ranch, just outside of Roswell Army Air Field.

"Are They Really A Hoax?"

The Roswell story caused a sensation for hours in the press before a second story was released that the wreckage of a weather balloon was recovered. Major Jesse A. Marcel was the head of 509th Bomb group intelligence office at the time of the incident. But the story of a landing wouldn’t jive with one of the eyewitness accounts of a foreman named William Brazel, who was working for rancher J.B. Foster at the time.

William and his son Vernon claimed to have come across an area strewn with unfamiliar material that was part of some collected wreckage. In a matter of days, Major Marcel and Captain Sheridan Cavitt of the Counter-Intelligence Corps contacted them and took the materials. In spite of residential eye witness accounts by the Wilmonts, the flying saucer story was debunked by the Roswell Dispatch by July 9th. Interest in the story was revived by the late ‘70s, but most of the eyewitnesses had passed away by then.

Many UFO believers regard the incident as a key moment, pointing fingers at segments of the military, whom they say created smokescreens to cover up alien technology, or secret military aircrafts. Original witnesses had offered conflicting stories; some had described a crashed disc, with two hundred yards in diameter that formed a long, thin strip some three quarters of a mile long, between two hundred to three hundred feet wide, and at one end was a deep gouge in the ground, ten feet wide, and five hundred feet long. That account would have indicated a significant amount of debris.

Some of the wreckage recovered had “I-beams” which Marcel’s son described as having hieroglyphic-type characters. These first accounts would describe something fairly mundane, and likely a crashed experimental craft in development near Roswell Army Air Field, or a shot down foreign craft.

The mythology of Roswell became evident here. There were no initial reports of an intact craft or alien bodies recovered. In 1974, TV researcher Robert Carr put out comments about a craft, and frozen alien bodies being held in Wright-Patterson AFB, related to a crash in 1948 that was later debunked.

Despite the falsehood, it triggered interest in the UFO research community, and the Roswell case started to be taken seriously. Other figures have elaborated the story with greater claims, such as Frank J. Kaufman, Glenn Dennis, Jim Ragsdale, “Pappy” Henderson, Mr. Rowe, and Major Edwin Easley. Several figures even claiming there were two crash sites, which has only complicated the narrative about what was found.

Some theories suggest that a Japanese Balloon bomb from World War II was recovered, or a V-2 rocket that veered off course, as part of the MOGUL project, a project developed with sensitive instruments and high altitude balloons to monitor soviet nuclear test activity.

Roswell’s Rumble is Chris Carter’s Treasure

What The X-Files did do well was add fragments from the known history to create an unsettling agenda in the series’ mythology. Carter and Co. borrowed much of the tone of the 1960s ABC sci-fi series The Invaders, which starred Roy Thinnes, a future X-Files acting alumnus who played the character of Jeremiah Smith.

In The Invaders, Thinnes played David Vincent, a man who witnesses a flying saucer land with alien beings intent on taking over the Earth. Over the course of the series, Vincent manages to gather a small circle of people who believe him, and eventually the invaders change their plans.

The series had an obvious parallel to the plight of the X-Files iconic villain. “We had a perfect conspiracy with an alien race,” The Cigarette Smoking Man ominously intoned in The X-Files season six episode, "One Son"; “Aliens who were coming to reclaim the planet and destroy all human life. Our job was to secretly prepare the way for their invasion. To create for them a race of human-alien hybrids. They were good plans, right plans. Kept secret for over fifty years, ever since the crash at Roswell.”

Some of the events in the series that speak of a clandestine meeting between the Colonists and the Syndicate in 1973 revealed in “One Son” mirror a rumored alleged clandestine meeting in February 1954 at Muroc, now Edwards, air force base, with on-going contact between Extra-Terrestrials and eminent people, including Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Which has also lead to the argument with some UFOologists that recovered technology from Roswell was “reversed-engineered,” and lead to developments like the current laser, transistors, microchips, Velcro, and microwave ovens. It has also been argued that such "reverse-engineering" gave the United States leverage with such contact. Deep Throat certainly suggested the Military use of “reverse-engineering” in season one’s second episode.

In The X-Files season five episode “Redux,” Michael Kritschgau offered up an counter explanation regarding Roswell as a cover, a red herring for other agendas.

“The Military saw a good thing in ’47 when the Roswell story broke. The more we denied it, the more people believed it was true. Aliens had landed – a made-to-order cover story for generals looking to develop the national war chest.”

Kritschgau further noted that such official investigations as Grudge, Twinkle, Project Blue Book, and Majestic 12 fed into the belief in UFOs, Kritschgau also noted that the first supersonic flight was in 1947, after which, every experimental flight was considered a U.F.O. All of these points are part of the historical lore.

The new X-Files episode, “My Struggle” depicted a version of the Roswell Crash, while also citing several other events, including the Kenneth Arnoldsightings from June 24, 1947, near Mount Rainier, Washington.Other events noted were the Maury Island sighing from June 21, 1947 near Tacoma, Washington, as well as the 1952 UFO flap over Washington D.C.

The Arnold sighting is notable. A pilot was commanding his own light aircraft to Pendleton Oregon from a job at Chehalis Air Service, Washington State, when he found himself near a location where an aircraft had vanished. At an altitude of 9,200 feet (2,760 m), he saw a bright flash, which he described as a “screwy formation… a chain of nine peculiar-looking aircraft” flying north to south at approximately 9,000 feet (2,790 m) elevation and going in a definite direction at an angle of 170 degrees.

The objects approached Mount Rainier at a very high speed, some of them changing or dipping direction. He realized they were moving much too fast to be a flock of birds. Upon landing in Yakima, Arnold described what he had witnessed to his fellow pilots. He would later describe them as half-moon-shaped oval in front and convex in the rear. At first, the news of his sighting was treated as a hoax, but Arnold’s impeccable record and integrity prompted people to take him more seriously. Arnold had assumed it was some sort of secret weapon or Soviet aircraft invading US airspace, an idea that was reinforced in private by a former USAF officer, that it was some rocket-powered jet, skeptics have suggested he witnessed a flock of pelicans, but this ignores the little known fact that Arnold had another sighting in the same area five days later at La Grande Airfield, Oregon.

Another key sighting that was visually referenced in the “My Struggle” teaser was the Maury Island incident. Harold A. Dahl, a harbor patrolman at Tacoma, was on his boat with his fifteen-year-old son, his dog, and two crewman on the 21st at around 2 p.m. when they saw five doughnut-shaped objects with rows of portholes circling around a sixth object. They estimated it was about 2,000 feet (600 m) above the water at the Puget Sound. They estimated that the objects were about 100 feet wide with a 25-foot hole in the middle.

While landing on the beach of Maury Island, Dahl took several photographs. One of the ships appeared to be trying to repair the other ship. There was a thunderous explosion, and the entire object emitted dark, almost molten, rock-like material and sheets of an extremely light metallic substance. Being directly under the shower, Dahl’s dog was killed, his son’s arm was injured, and the boat was damaged. After the UFOs headed out to sea, Dahl tried to get help via his radio, but it was dead. Dahl and others collected sample evidence and took it back to Tacoma to his boss, Fred Crissman. Soon, Kenneth Arnold was investigating the incident, and within days had his own encounter.

Lastly, there was the incident in Washington from 1952. As the nuclear age developed through the ‘50s, the ratio of UFO activity seemed to increase. In June of 1952, there were reports of UFOs over the skies of the east coast of the United States. Starting in Quantico, Virginia, there were various accounts of witnesses from Pan American Airline and National Airline crews spotting crafts through July, seen on radar at the Air Route Traffic Control. At Washington’s National Airport, the sightings near the capital reached such a degree that B-52s and F-94s were dispatched to intercept but to no avail.

These cases would evolve and become more complicated, and many themes were cited and explored on The X-Files. UFO abductions, the alien-human hybrid hypothesis as first cited in “The Erlenmeyer Flask,” UFO cults cited in episodes like “Red Museum,” or Ancient Astronaut Theory first cited in “Biogenesis,” or animal experimentation as cited in “Fearful Symmetry.”

Such real life incidents fed into the story arc’s of The X-Files, and often acted as a starting off point for the writers imagination. What is also to be noted is the point that writers would attend conventions about the UFO phenomenon in the early years, which would lead to the invention of characters like The Lone Gunmen, or other UFO investigators, there’s even accounts of the series writers enjoying cooperation from some government agencies. This cross pollination helped to shape the science and speculation that detailed the series.

Chris Carter and The X-Files took subjects that had been discussed in whispers and brought them into the mainstream, hence the popularity of Ancient Aliens for the History channel, or NASA’s Unexplained Files for the Discovery channel. Indeed, The truth is often stranger than fiction.

STRANGE ALIEN CRAFT PHOTO TAKEN  OVER ENGLAND

NOVEMBER 4, 2016   …………..  NEWTON ABBOT DEVON ENGLAND
Hi Ken : I was sky watching when I spotted a luminous object approaching.

The object was sphere shaped and the top half was blue while the bottom half was white. The sphere moved very slowly across the night sky before coming to a stop. The sphere just hung there in the sky like it was waiting for something. I looked through my binoculars at the sphere looking for a conventional explanation but there was none it was definitely odd and unusual.

After a while of watching the sphere I then spotted a larger object that was approaching from the west. This larger object was shaped like a gherkin. The gherkin shaped object glowed different colours as it moved and got closer. As soon as the gherkin shaped object was near and in front of the sphere it seemed to somehow attach it’s self to the sphere by using light. It was like the tractor beam out of star trek. The beam appeared to fluctuate in brightness as it began to pull the sphere.

I quickly took a photograph and watched in amazement as the gherkin shaped object pulled the Sphere away across the night sky and off in to the distance. I was speechless. I have seen a lot of UFOs but I have never seen anything like this before it was really incredible to witness this. I have been sky watching a lot lately and have seen and photographed some very unusual things. Why do I see UFOs on a regular basis? The photograph was taken on the 4th of ‎November ‎2016 at Newton Abbot Devon England.

All the best John.

According to testimony in Case 80091 from MUFON witness stated:

I flew to Philadelphia on December 2, 2015 and I have a habit of taking pictures out the plane window.

I didn’t realize at the time that I got this picture and I’m curious to find out if I actually have a picture of a UFO or not.

Did the plane passenger captured a UFO or it could be a camera reflection?

Space exploration: Kickstarter could fund our first steps to Alpha Centauri

Space exploration: Kickstarter could fund our first steps to Alpha Centauri

The project team hopes to raise at least $1 million through the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter by December 21, 2016

Alpha Centauri

The elevation of Donald Trump to the Oval Office may give NASA the boost it needs to head back to the stars, but other astronomy projects still have to find novel ways to get the funding they need to keep their stellar dreams alive.

One such initiative is Project Blue, which looks to directly image planets around the double suns of Alpha Centauri.

The project team hopes to raise at least $1 million through the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter by December 21, 2016, to lay the technical groundwork for the project, representatives said in a statement.

According to Space.com, the initiative would launch a small space telescope designed specifically to look at Alpha Centauri, which, along with Proxima Centauri, is the nearest stellar neighbour to Earth's solar system.

Because of the star system's closeness, that small telescope would be able to take a "pale blue dot" image of any potentially Earthlike planets orbiting there — a photo of a small blue speck like the one the Voyager spacecraft 1 took of Earth from afar. A blue hue would indicate potential oceans or atmosphere surrounding the planet.

Kickstarter

The SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute and the University of Massachusetts Lowell have already signed on to collaborate on the project.

The entire mission would cost between $10 million and $50 million, Jon Morse, mission executive for Project Blue told Space.com when the project was announced in October.

The project's first $1 million raised will go to "crucial analysis, design and simulations that form the foundation of the mission," the Kickstarter page reads.

If more money is raised, the researchers also have stretch goals: $2 million will allow them to test the coronagraph that lets the telescope spot planets around the bright glare of Alpha Centauri's stars, and $4 million will let them finish the telescope's design, start building components and incorporate interested students and universities into the building process.

Science of 'Arrival': If Aliens Call, Does Humanity Have a Plan?

Science of 'Arrival': If Aliens Call, Does Humanity Have a Plan?

The science fiction movie "Arrival," which opened in theaters last weekend, poses tantalizing questions about how humans might make contact — and eventually communicate — with intelligent aliens. The much-hyped film has renewed people's interest in the search for intelligent life elsewhere in the universe. But what would happen if humans really did make contact with an intelligent alien civilization? If E.T. calls, is there a plan?

The answer is yes, and no, said astronomer Seth Shostak, who leads efforts to detect radio signals from extraterrestrial civilizations at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California.

"There are some protocols, but I think that's an unfortunate name, and it makes them sound more important than they are," Shostak told Live Science. [Greetings, Earthlings! 8 Ways Aliens Could Contact Us]

In the 1990s, Shostak chaired a committee of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) that prepared a revised version of the "post-detection protocols" for researchers who watch for possible alien transmissions using radio telescopes, a field known as SETI (short for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence).

The protocols were first drawn up in the 1980s to help scientists in the United States and the Soviet Union share information about any potential SETI signals. But, Shostak explained, the SETI post-detection protocols are guidelines for governments and scientists, rather than a global action plan for dealing with alien contact.

"They say, 'If you pick up a signal, check it out ... tell everybody ... and don't broadcast any replies without international consultation,' whatever that means," he said. "But that's all that the protocols say, and they have no force of law. The United Nations took a copy of the early protocols and put them in a file drawer somewhere, and that's as official as they ever got."

"Men in Black"

In the movie "Arrival," spaceships land in several cities around the world, and a linguist (portrayed by actress Amy Adams) and a physicist (played by actor Jeremy Renner) are recruited as part of an international effort to try to communicate with the aliens and find out why they are here.

In real life, apart from the protocol dictating that researchers should share news about SETI signals with other astronomers around the world, Shostak said he is not aware of any government-level plans or established procedures in case of an alien contact, whatever form it might take.

And it seems there really are no "Men in Black," shadowy government investigators of UFO-lore, depicted in the comedy sci-fi movie series starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones.

"If [the government] could afford the 'Men in Black,' then they could afford to support SETI," Shostak joked. [7 Huge Misconceptions about Aliens]

But the U.S. government has shown no interest in SETI research so far, he said. "It's not a government program, so they have nothing to do with it. I would love to see some interest from them, but I never have," he added.

After one early SETI "false alarm," which eventually turned out to be a signal from a European research satellite, the only response was from journalists.

"In 1997, we got a signal that looked pretty promising for most of the day. We thought it was possibly the real deal," Shostak said. "I kept waiting for the 'Men in Black' to show up — they didn't. I kept waiting for the Pentagon to call. I kept waiting for the White House to call. They didn't call. But The New York Times called."

In a review of the science and speculations about extraterrestrials, published as "Xenology: An Introduction to the Scientific Study of Extraterrestrial Life, Intelligence and Civilization" in 1979, the author and scientist Robert Freitas described a purported military briefing in Washington, D.C., in 1950 that outlined potential U.S. military responses to alien contact.

The supposed military plan, which became known as "Seven Phases to Contact," was first reported in a 1967 book on UFOs by the American broadcaster and UFO researcher Frank Edwards.

But Shostak said he has seen no sign of any extraterrestrial action plan for U.S. government agencies or the military. "As far as I know, there's nothing, and I think I would have heard something because of the [SETI] false alarms," he said.

While detecting an alien radio signal would be different from encountering spaceships that landed on Earth, Shostak doesn’t think protocols will play a big part in how we respond.

"Some people asked me at a conference last week, 'What plan does the military have to deal with aliens should they land?' And I said, 'I don’t know … but to the best of my knowledge, they don't have a plan.'"

Shostak noted that any aliens who could travel here in a spacecraft would need to be centuries or thousands of years more technologically advanced than humans are now, so it's almost impossible to imagine the consequences of contact between the species, let alone the thought of developing a plan to deal with them. [13 Ways to Hunt Intelligent Aliens]

"It would be like the Neanderthals having a plan in case the U.S. Air Force showed up," he said.

Although the aliens in "Arrival"helpfully travel to Earth in faster-than-light spaceships, willing and ready to talk, Shostak said a more likely "first contact" scenario would be the detection of a SETI radio signal, perhaps from a source hundreds or thousands of light-years away.

That means it could take centuries for the aliens to receive any reply transmitted from Earth in an effort to communicate with them, he said. As such, there might not be any real hurry to decide what to say.

And if E.T. does call, what should humans say in response? Some scientists, including British physicist Stephen Hawking, have expressed concern about "Active SETI" programs designed to transmit messages from Earth to any aliens that might be listening. Hawking warned of the potential threat posed by unknown extraterrestrials and their alien motivations.

There's also the difficult matter of making the right first impression in any extraterrestrial chat, Shostak said.

"I've been to several conferences where people discuss whether we should tell [aliens] all the bad things about humanity, or just the good things, and that sort of thing," he said. "But I think that is terribly overdrawn. To me, that would be like the indigenous people of Australia seeing Capt. Cook coming over the horizon in his ship, then saying, 'We're going to have a couple of conferences to discuss what we're going to talk to these guys about, and what language we'll use’ — [but] it doesn’t matter."

Shostak pointed out that humans have already been broadcasting news into space for decades, in the form of television and radio signals, and so it's probably too late to keep quiet.

"Those signals have been going out into space since the Second World War, so we've already told them we're here," he said.

IF ALIENS INVADED, HOW WOULD WE TALK TO THEM?

IF ALIENS INVADED, HOW WOULD WE TALK TO THEM?

THE FILM ARRIVAL OFFERS SOME CLUES

hqdefault.jpg

In the sci-fi film Arrival, alien spaceships suddenly appear above twelve locations on Earth. The aliens—seven-limbed creatures called heptapods—are willing to let a few humans come aboard for quick chats, but there's no universal translator gizmo to help the two species parley. Instead, each country calls upon its top linguists, including Louise Banks, played by Amy Adams.

Banks is whisked away to the nearest spaceship in Montana, tasked with untangling the heptapods’ languages and figuring out why they have come to Earth. To find out how linguists might react when faced with an extraterrestrial language, the filmmakers consulted Jessica Coon, a professor of linguistics at McGill University in Montreal.

“These aren’t your typical Star Trek aliens that have two arms and two legs and a vocal system just like ours, but happen to be a different color or have strange bumps on their heads,” Coon says. “They’re really not human looking at all and the sounds that they make are completely nonhuman sounds, and that’s probably more likely what we would expect to find.”

We asked Coon about what the film gets right about field linguistics, why alien languages will be difficult to decipher, and how linguists might go about doing so.

Aliens will play by a different set of rules

If aliens ever do touch down on Earth, their language is likely to offer challenges not found in any human language. “What linguists have discovered about human languages is that even though they can sound very different from one another and their grammars do show a lot of variation…languages tend to fall into certain patterns,” Coon says. So given certain pieces of information about a human language, linguists can often make reliable predictions about its other properties.

Take word order. In languages where verbs come before objects, it’s also common for prepositions like “on” to precede nouns. So in English, we say, “ate the apple,” and, “on the table.” In other languages, such as Japanese, both patterns are reversed. “Most of the world’s languages fall into one of those patterns or the other,” Coon says. “The variation isn’t completely unconstrained.”

Alien languages are unlikely to follow the same rules that human languages share. “Humans seem to be hardwired for this capacity to learn language,” Coon says. “Because it is part of our genetics and part of being human, it’s very unlikely that other creatures…would have the same kinds of constraints or show the same kinds of similarities that human languages do.”

And experiences that can be represented in every human language may not show up in an alien one. Every human language will have some way of representing intent, Coon says. “Kids are going to want to be able to say, ‘I didn’t mean to break that cup.’” But, as Banks explains to her colleagues in Arrival, if an alien species acts instinctively their language may have no concept of self-will, or no way to distinguish between doing things on purpose as opposed to by accident.

Linguists won’t even be able to assume that an alien language will have nouns, verbs, questions and other elements that are basic building blocks of our speech. “We would just have to hope…that we would still be able to recognize patterns and match it up with we’re seeing,” Coon says.

Even our own biology could limit us from understanding an alien language. Assuming our visitors even have mouths, we still might not be able to pick apart the speech they utter. In Ted Chiang’s “Story of Your Life,” the short story that inspired Arrival, Banks’s character points out that human ears and brains are built to understand speech made using a human vocal tract. But when it comes to aliens, she says, “it’s possible our ears simply can’t recognize the distinctions they consider meaningful.”

While they are able to make progress with the aliens’ unique written language, Banks and her colleagues are hampered by an inability to reproduce the heptapods’ noises. “With the spoken language it’s just a nonstarter because she can’t produce these strange sounds that sound like whale calls and purring cats,” Coon says.

So how would we talk to aliens?

For her first fieldwork assignment, Coon spent a summer in Mexico learning the Mayan language Ch’ol. “Going to the site of a recently arrived UFO isn’t really anything like driving into the jungle in Chiapas,” she admits. Still, Coon says, Louise Banks’s attempts to decipher the heptapods’ languages in Arrivaloffer a pretty accurate representation of how we would try to translate alien speech.

If future linguists find themselves facing down intelligent aliens, they will have to introduce themselves, communicate what they want to do, and practice speaking or writing with the aliens. Like Banks, linguists will start small, understanding very basic terms before working up to more complicated questions.

“The film doesn’t really go into the nitty gritty details of how exactly she deciphered the language…but I think they did a very nice job piecing together the montage scene of Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner working together and acting out different scenes, and getting translations for basic things you can point to, and you see her poring over the logogram looking for patterns,” Coon says. “I think that’s exactly what linguists would be doing if they do call us to translate for aliens.”

When deciphering human languages, most field linguists bring along a few simple tools, such as an audio recorder (and perhaps a video camera), some pencils and paper, and whatever information they already have about their target language or related languages. “That’s always a good starting place,” Coon says. For any new language, she says, “Really it’s about interacting with speakers and asking lots of questions, and building up hypotheses about how the grammar works, and testing them by asking speakers more questions and refining our understanding of detailed parts of the grammar.”

What can we learn from afar?

So actually being able to interact with aliens will be key. But what if we can't get close enough to attempt discourse with our alien guests? Linguists might still be able to make some progress with recordings, Coon speculates.

In the film, Banks’s first chance to hear the newly arrived aliens arises when a military officer plays her a brief audio file and asks what she can figure out from it. “That is obviously an impossible task, you need some kind of matchup between the sound and what’s being said,” Coon says. But Banks might have had more luck with videos and some knowledge of what context shaped the scene. If she had access to a large number of longer recordings, she could look for noises that reliably correspond to particular actions. “With enough of that kind of information…you could sort of whittle away at the grammar of a language,” Coon says.

Ancient human languages have been deciphered without help from living speakers. “If you have enough information and enough of the context and the history, I think there’s hope that even without a lot of interaction you could be able to make at least significant progress in understanding the grammar of a language—again depending on how likely we are to be able to understand alien life at all,” Coon says.

Does this mean that we could pick up an alien language from their broadcasts, or that they could learn ours? “I wouldn’t be surprised at all if creatures who could make giant spaceships that just show up on Earth could easily figure out our languages from the many broadcasts we put into outer space, and that we might be able to do the same thing with sufficient resources and sufficient information,” Coon says.

Can Crop Circles be used as a reference points for time travel. Space portals used by extraterrestrials from another planet to create crop circle “messages” to mankind? Tall, blond Extraterrestrials who look human with Scandinavian-type accents? What messages are crop circles trying to communicate to us, and are they an invitation for us to shift our worldview?

Crop circles offer humanity the opportunity to make a profound collective discovery.

9 YEAR OLDS ALIEN ABDUCTION EXPERIENCE

SUMMER 1929  ………….. SPRING VALLEY NEW YORK

It all began in the hamlet of Spring Valley in Rockland County during the summer of 1929. A 9-year-old girl was playing outside her home and suddenly she saw a flash of light in the sky. Upon a closer look, she thought what she was seeing was a big, metallic dirigible airship.

As she looked even closer, port holes all around the dirigible shaped object became visible. She would later tell investigators that the dirigible seemed to glow with an unusual light.  The girl told investigators that three or four odd-shaped beings dressed in what looked like deep sea diving suits left the dirigible. The beings floated down to the ground where she was.

For some reason she said she was unable to move her feet or arms. She remembered that the local animals became unusually quiet while this was happening. She told investigators that she remembers seeing the beings floating back to their craft.  She also noted that she had no idea how long the event took place.

article-spring-valley

When she returned home, she was scolded by her mother for having been away from the house for so long.  It was the aftermath that investigators found intriguing, however. The girl developed a phobia about being alone. Shortly after the experience, she felt sick with a strange illness that doctors could not diagnose. Years later, she told investigators that she wondered if she’d caught some strange disease from the odd shaped beings.

Through her teens and into womanhood, she had nightmares about being chased by the strange visitors.  Investigators experienced in abduction cases explain that the young woman’s incident, lifelong phobias and peculiar health problems were representative of the classic alien abduction scenario.

10 Biggest Historical Mysteries That Will Probably Never Be Solved

10 Biggest Historical Mysteries That Will Probably Never Be Solved

INTRO: Unexplainable?

There are some historical mysteries that may never be solved. Sometimes, that's because the relevant excavated material has been lost or an archaeological site has been destroyed. Other times, it's because new evidence is unlikely to come forward or the surviving evidence is too vague to lead scholars to a consensus.

The lack of answers only makes these enigmas more intriguing. Here, Live Science takes a look at 10 of these historical questions that may never have definitive explanations.

Who was Jack the Ripper?

Credit: Pyty / Shutterstock.com

1. Who was Jack the Ripper?

In 1888, Jack the Ripper killed at least five women in London, mutilating their bodies. A number of letters, supposedly from the Ripper, were sent to police taunting officers' efforts to find the Ripper. (Whether any of them were actually written by the Ripper is a matter of debate among scholars.) The name "Jack the Ripper" comes from these letters.

Needless to say, the Ripper was never found, and over the years, dozens of people have been brought up as possible candidates. A recent book suggested that a woman named Lizzie Williams was the Ripper, although other Ripper experts cast doubt on it. It appears unlikely that the true identity of the Ripper will ever be known for sure.

Where is Jimmy Hoffa?

2. Where is Jimmy Hoffa?

The teamster union leader known for his involvement in organized crime disappeared in Oakland County, Michigan, on July 30, 1975, and is now presumed to be dead. The identity of his killer(s) and the location of his body are ongoing mysteries. Police and forensic anthropologists have searched a number of sites in Detroit and Oakland County to no avail.

One popular theory was that Hoffa's body was buried beneath Giants Stadium in New Jersey. However, this theory has been debunked. The identity of his killer is also unclear. Before his death in 2006, Richard "The Iceman" Kuklinski, a hit man, claimed to have killed Hoffa and dumped his body in a scrap yard. An author named Philip Carlo visited Kuklinski in prison before he died and wrote a book on Kuklinski's confessions. After the book came out a number of police officers cast doubt on the confession in media interviews. As the years go by, it appears increasingly unlikely that Hoffa's remains will ever be found.

Where is Cleopatra's tomb?

3. Where is Cleopatra's tomb?

Ancient writers claim that Cleopatra VIIand her lover, Mark Antony, were buried together in a tomb after their deaths in 30 B.C. The writer Plutarch (A.D. 45-120) wrote that the tomb was located near a temple of Isis, an Egyptian goddess, and was a "lofty and beautiful" monument containing treasures made of gold, silver, emeralds, pearls, ebony and ivory.

The location of the tomb remains a mystery. In 2010, Zahi Hawass, Egypt's former antiquities minister, conducted excavations at a site near Alexandria now called Taposiris Magna, which contains a number of tombs dating to the era when Cleopatra VII ruled Egypt. While many interesting archaeological discoveries were made, Cleopatra VII's tomb was not among them Hawass reported in a series of news releases. Archaeologists have noted that even if Cleopatra's tomb does survive to this day, it may be heavily plundered and unidentifiable.

Who killed JFK?

Credit: Walt Cisco, Dallas Morning News; Public Domain

4. Who killed JFK?

This is probably the biggest mystery in American history that will never be resolved to everyone's satisfaction. On Nov. 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was shot in Dallas by Lee Harvey Oswald (although some speculate that he wasn't the only one shooting). On Nov. 24, 1963, before Oswald could stand trial, Oswald was fatally shot by nightclub owner Jack Ruby. Ruby died of lung cancer on Jan. 3, 1967. [10 Persistent Kennedy Assassination Theories]

The most widely accepted explanation is that Oswald killed JFK on his own and Ruby killed Oswald, on his own volition. Ruby's stated motivation was to spare Jacqueline Kennedy "the discomfiture of [Oswald] coming back to trial." However there are still a significant number of professional historians, along with many amateurs, who do not agree with this explanation and since JFK's death, numerous alternative explanationshave been brought forward by historians and amateurs. Given that significant new evidence is unlikely to appear, a firm consensus will probably never be reached.

5. Oak Island money pit

For more than two centuries, stories have circulated that Oak Island, located off Nova Scotia, Canada, held a money pit of buried treasure — supposedly left by the pirate Capt. William Kidd(1645-1701). Over that time, numerous expeditions costing millions of dollars have traveled to the island searching for the lost treasure, to no avail. [The 10 Most Notorious Pirates Ever]

Despite centuries of searching no treasure has been found on Oak Island. Nevertheless that doesn't stop people from trying to find it. A History Channel show called the "Curse of Oak Island" follows a modern-day expedition; the show was just renewed for a fourth season in 2016.

The Copper Scroll treasure

Credit: Public Domain

6. The Copper Scroll treasure

Another treasure tale that will probably never be resolved is more ancient. In 1952 a copper scroll was found by archaeologists in a cave, along with other Dead Sea Scrolls, at the site of Qumran. As its name suggests, the writing was engraved onto a copper scroll. The scroll records a vast amount of hidden gold and silver treasure — so much, in fact, that some scholars believe that it is impossible for it to exist. [Gallery of Dead Sea Scrolls: A Glimpse of the Past]

The scroll dates back more than 1,900 years to a time when the Roman Empire controlled the Qumran area. There were a number of revolts against Roman rule at the time the scroll was written, and scientists have hypothesized that the treasure was hidden to prevent its capture by Roman forces. Whether the treasure is real, where exactly it was hidden, whether it was ever found and whether it could still exist today are all mysteries that will likely never be solved.

The fate of the Ark of the Covenant

Credit: Photo by I. Vassil, released into public domain through Wikimedia

7. The fate of the Ark of the Covenant

In 587 B.C., a Babylonian army, under King Nebuchadnezzar II, conquered Jerusalem, sacking the city and destroying the First Temple, a building used by the Jewish people to worship god. The First Temple contained the Ark of the Covenant, which carried tablets recording the 10 Commandments.

The fate of the Ark is unclear. Ancient sources indicate that the ark was either carried back to Babylonor hidden before the city was captured. It's also possible that the ark was destroyed during the city's sacking. In any event, the ark's location is unknown. Since the disappearance, a number of stories and legends about the ark's fate have been told. One story suggests the ark eventually made its way to Ethiopia, where it is kept today. Another story says the ark was divinely hidden and will not appear until a messiah arrives.

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon

8. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon

Ancient writers describe a fantastic series of gardens constructed at the ancient city of Babylonin modern-day Iraq. It's not clear when these gardens were built, but some ancient writers were so impressed by the gardens that they called them a "wonder of the world." Around 250 B.C., Philo of Byzantium wrote that the Hanging Gardens had "plants cultivated at a height above ground level, and the roots of the trees are embedded in an upper terrace rather than in the earth."

So far, archaeologists who have excavated Babylon have been unable to find the remains of a garden that meets this description. This has left archaeologists with a question: Did the hanging gardens really exist? In 2013, Stephanie Dalley, a researcher at the University of Oxford, proposed in a book that the gardens were actually located at the Assyrian city of Nineveh. Over the past two decades, both Babylon and Nineveh have suffered damage from wars and looting, and it seems unlikely that this mystery will ever be fully solved.

Was the City of Atlantis Real?

9. Was the City of Atlantis Real?

Writing in the fourth century B.C., the Greek philosopher Plato told a story of a land named Atlantisthat existed in the Atlantic Ocean and supposedly conquered much of Europe and Africa in prehistoric times. In the story, the prehistoric Athenians strike back against Atlantis in a conflict that ends with Atlantis vanishing beneath the waves.

While no serious scholar believes that this story is literally true, some have speculated that the legend could have been inspired, in part, by real events that happened in Greek history. One possibility is that the Minoan civilization(as it's now called), which flourished on the island of Crete until about 1400 B.C., could have inspired the story of Atlantis. Although Crete is in the Mediterranean, and not the Atlantic, Minoan settlements suffered considerable damageduring the eruption of Thera, a volcano in Greece.

Additionally, archaeologists found that the Minoans were eventually overcome (or forced to join with) a group of people called the Mycenaeans, who were based on mainland Greece. It's unlikely that this debate will ever be fully settled.

What was Jesus really like?

Credit: Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported

10. What was Jesus really like?

The earliest surviving gospels date to the second century, almost 100 years after the life of Jesus (although recently, it was announced that a possible first-century fragmenthad been found).

The lack of surviving first-century texts about Jesus leave biblical scholars with a number of questions. When were the gospels written? How many of the stories actually took place? What was Jesus like in real life? Archaeological investigations of Nazareth, Jesus' hometown, reveal more about the environment where he grew up. More recently, scientists discovered a first-century housethat, centuries after Jesus' time, was venerated as being the house that Jesus grew up in, but whether it was actually Jesus' house is unknown.

Although new research will provide more insight, scholars think it's unlikely they will ever fully know what Jesus was really like. [Who Was Jesus, the Man?]

Inside the High-Tech, Mars-Bound Bear Den

Spaceworks Enterprises Human hibernation torpor stasis suspended animation
Inside the High-Tech, Mars-Bound Bear Den

To get to Mars faster, humans might have to slow themselves down grizzly-style.

Jacqueline Ronson

John Bradford, president of SpaceWorks Enterprises, wants to talk about Mars, hibernation, and bears, which is tricky because — despite what grade school teachers sometimes claim — bears don’t hibernate. What bears do, perhaps better than any other species on Earth, is chill. Every winter, grizzlies crawl into their dens, bed down, and enter a state called torpor. Their internal temperatures drop by 10 degrees, their breathing slows with their heart rate, and their metabolic activity drops as they begin to cycle nitrogen that would otherwise be excreted in urine to prevent muscle atrophy. This feat of physiology is remarkable on its own, but the real reason spaceflight entrepreneurs are so interested in torpor is what would happen if you poked a resting bear: It would wake up and eat you.

Torpor isn’t deep sleep. It is sometimes considered a type of hibernation, and the two are similar. In both cases metabolic activity slows, although true hibernation is more extreme — some animals can reach near-freezing internal temperatures and thaw out just fine. It’s the closest thing the natural world has to suspended animation, a way to avoid the negative physical and mental effects of time in space by leveraging a mammalian superpower — one humans might, on some level, possess.

“We still really don’t understand a lot of the triggers and mechanisms for even why some animals do it,” says Bradford, who has enlisted the help of biologists working on these very questions. His thinking? If we can get a handle on how our mammal cousins shut down without suffering long-term ill effects, we might be able to replicate those results in ourselves.

“I’m very encouraged,” he adds.

Here’s what he imagines: Astronauts entering pods, slowly losing consciousness, and letting their internal temperatures drop as engines fire up and blast away. Six months later, these unconscious explorers wake up on Mars without recollection of the journey.

NASA buys into this vision, which sounds science fictional, but might become a key component of the plan to get humans to the Red Planet this century. Spaceworks is now in the second phase of a NASA-funded project to research the feasibility of inducing torpor in Mars-bound astronauts in order to keep them healthy and save money.

Human hibernation stasis suspended animation
A SpaceWorks design concept for a Mars-bound spacecraft.

As it turns out, the strongest argument in favor spaceflight hibernation is economic. Bradford estimates that a torpor habitat and launch system would weigh half as much as a traditional living space loaded up with food and oxygen tanks. Shipping costs to Mars work out to about $50,000 a pound, so when you’re talking savings in the realm of hundreds of tons, even a very large investment in research and design could pay off.

Plus, torpor might offer protections against bone density loss, muscle atrophy, and possibly even space radiation for astronauts on the long haul. “They’re still looking for good solutions to address those, and consequently you end up with multiple technology paths trying to solve each one of these individually, and we think we can with this one technology offer some benefits to all of those,” says Bradford.

From a medical perspective, it’s unclear at this point whether stasis would in itself protect against cellular damage from radiation, but from an engineering perspective, it’s a lot easier to implement shielding if astronauts are contained to a capsule.

Which all brings the question back around to feasibility. Humans do not typically hibernate, but many mammals do, and there are reasons to believe that we have our biology can be hacked to create a similar response. The best evidence is in rare and extraordinary cases where people have been found apparently frozen to death, only to come back to life once they warm up. As biochemist Mark Roth memorably put it in a 2010 TED Talk: “You’re not dead until you’re warm and dead.”

In 1999, Anna Bågenholm spent 80 minutes trapped under a frozen waterfall in Norway, and her internal temperature dropped to 57 degrees. Her heart was stopped for three hours, and yet thanks to a careful medical resuscitation, she came back to life and recovered almost completely.

In 2006, Mitsutaka Uchikoshi of Japan got lost in the forest and was found 24 days later in a hibernation-like state. His body temperature was just 72 degrees, and he had no recollection past the second day of his absence. He also recovered.

These days, Roth is working to develop a chemical way to induce hibernation or suspended animation in humans as an aid for emergency medical treatment. If you put someone in stasis right after a heart attack, stroke, or traumatic injury, his thinking goes, you can essentially stop the clock, giving doctors time to fix the problem while preventing the damage to the brain and other organs that would otherwise result from oxygen deprivation.

Hydrogen sulfide seems to have some promise as an inducer of suspended animation. The compound binds to oxygen receptors, which decreases the body’s demand for O2 and causes metabolism to shut down. The clinical trials were canceled, but Roth hasn’t given up on similar compounds that could help minimize injury from blood rushing back into tissues after a medical procedure.

SpaceWorks Enterprises torpor Mars habitat.
Crew members would be fed nutrients intravenously through the flight.

Still, most of the medical research into human stasis is focused on finding ways to safely slow human metabolism for a period of a few hours to a few weeks. To get to Mars, that timeline will have to be expanded significantly, although that work will certainly provide crucial insights that will guide the future of space hibernation. And in order to accomplish that there will need to be human trails, which, again, gets tricky.

“Other than space flight, there isn’t really a compelling reason to do this to a healthy person,” says Bradford.

Even though Leroy Chiao, former NASA astronaut and commander of the International Space Station, is cheerleading for the project, not all astronauts are pumped to go under either. “At one of our technical conferences Buzz Aldrin voiced concerns,” says Bradford. “He didn’t want to do it. He wants to be awake.”

Bradford understood where the NASA vet was coming from, but he has a slightly more pragmatic perspective.

“If it means the difference between being able to go to Mars, and not,” says Bradford, “I think everybody will do it.”

National Geographic’s 'Mars' Offers a Glimpse of Our Future

national geographic mars
National Geographic’s 'Mars' Offers a Glimpse of Our Future

That said, there are some science plot holes.

Producers pulled all the stops in the highly anticipated miniseries Mars, debuting Monday night on the National Geographic Channel. The $20 million, six-part television event pulled together an A-list team from the worlds of Hollywood and the scientific community: We’re talking about Oscar-winning producers Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, and Justin Wilkes sitting in the same room and talking about Mars with people like science writer Stephen Petranek, astronaut Mae Jemison, aeronautics engineer Bobby Braun, and many others.

The producers blend science fiction with reality to portray what a crewed mission to Mars will look like in the near-future mixed with real-world commentary and interviews from today’s leading space and engineering experts.

And in the interest of providing people with something that can still qualify as “entertainment,” Mars does not shy away from taking dramatic liberties that come at the price of scientific accuracy, interspersing a fake crewed mission with real-world commentary from leading engineers.

Two Inverse writers — Kastalia Medrano and Neel Patel — watched an advance screening of the first Mars episode. Warning: There are some spoilers.

NP: When I first heard about the concept for Mars, I was admittedly very skeptical about how this would turn out. Talking about traveling to Mars through a narrative of fiction almost never goes well. But I thought the first episode actually did a good job to bring to attention the types of obstacles and issues that are big for NASA, SpaceX, and other companies looking to get to the Red Planet — like the lack of Martian atmosphere that makes the descent to the planet such a dangerous move.

KM: It’s an interesting concept, treating the 2016 “flashbacks” as non-fiction, using cameos with the biggest names in the real-life journey to Mars like Elon Musk. I hope that they keep that balance with the rest of the episodes, because the future they’ve extrapolated can get a bit cheesy. I think in order to be successful as an academic tool and not just a source of entertainment, the series will have to be a little more economical with the “dramatic liberties,” as you put it.

Which isn’t to say the show by definition needs to be drier — Mars is cool! The reason the journey to Mars has captivated so many people is that the science is legit dramatic and high-risk, high-reward on its own terms, so I hope they can tap into that instead of just sensationalizing. One of the real-life challenges they touched on was the immense stress and degradation the astronauts’ bodies will face — but it was kind of just thrown in as an ominous bullet point to beef up a speech and make everything seem more dire while also making the characters seem more heroic. Granted, it was just the first episode, but I’d really like to see them work in some scientifically valid takes — not just on the more well-known narratives like loss of bone density, but on things like the challenges of organ regeneration in space, and how to cope in a vacuum without incoming medical resources. For instance, how do you hope they’ll handle the radiation issue?

NP: As you know, I’ve been harping on space radiation being the single biggest obstacle keeping us from sending people to Mars. It’s an issue that not even Elon Musk will fully address — and he and SpaceX are targeting to send the first humans to Mars by 2024 or 2025. How they’re going to keep those kinds of radiation levels from decimating the body is still a complete mystery. And it’s not just about the trip to Mars. Astronauts will need to be protected from the sun’s rays while they live and work on the Red Planet. If the goal is to establish a permanent human presence on Mars, it needs to be with the idea that we can live healthily and happily on the planet.

Speaking of health, that’s another issue I had with the premiere. The crew commander for the mission gets injured, but works to keep the extent of his injuries a secret from the rest of the crew and from ground control. Not only does this seem impossible — I would imagine the first astronauts to head to Mars would be completely wrapped in medical devices that measured vitals constantly — but it’s also impractical. Would an astronaut really work to keep problems with his/her health hidden from his team? Almost certainly not. Punting those problems down the road poses an enormous risk to the rest of the and forces them to potentially deal with much worse later on. I get putting forth something like this for the purposes of drama and suspense, but this does a disservice to astronauts as a whole and makes it seem the mental and physical prowess of those men and women are matched by a cavalier attitude.

KM: I felt the same way about the scene where they essentially begin hiking across Mars. I dunno what kind of rad spacesuits we’ll be working with in 2033, so I’m not saying it can’t be done, but it came off a bit cavalier. I did, however, appreciate the fact that they made it pretty clear that, whether or not the mission was successful, the team wasn’t really expecting to come back. The first generation of Mars colonists won’t be travelers who live there a few years and then go back and forth — when they leave Earth, they’ll need to do it with the understanding that they’re never coming back, since, even if they all survive, the distance and resources inherent to the whole thing makes a return journey just not feasible. So I was glad to not see a romanticized We’ll see you in X years!narrative, though of course the idea of leaving Earth never to return isn’t exactly lacking in drama either.

This probably won’t happen because it’s not the most scientific or animated thread in the plot, but I’d actually be interested in getting a bit more context about how the future supposedly arrived at the entity they call the International Mars Science Foundation (IMSF). Utopian organizations that have united all available civilizations are a pretty common optimistic sci-fi trope (see: Star Trek), but as of 2016, we already have the seeds of global cooperation — Russians and Americans coordinating on the International Space Station (well, sort of), new space laws meant to foster inter-country collaboration, private spaceflight companies working in tandem with NASA, and so on. I’d like to see them connect those dots to their 2033 timeline.

NP: For sure. I actually loved how they spent a bit of time explaining what SpaceX is currently doing by bringing rocket boosters back to Earth for a safe landing after a launch , and explaining why reusability is such an important part of making future space travel work.

It was especially clever how they let the footage of the June 2015 SpaceX explosion unfold — making it very clear that we have a long ways to go before we fully figure out how all of this is going to go.

Mars is fascinating, and it arrives at a time when the prospect of humans going to the Red Planet has transcended the realm of possibility to inevitability. I think the real thing will possess fewer histrionics, but will be no less an achievement of staggering proportions.

Everything You Wanted to Know About the Cosmos

Everything You Wanted to Know About the Cosmos

NGC2264-Christmastree-750x300.jpg
NASA
IN BRIEF
In collaboration with Fraser Cain, from Universe Today, we asked for your most pressing questions about physics and astronomy. Here, we dive into the answers.

Today, we have a host of innvative technologies that allow us to understand our universe as never before. Take, for example, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It is an accomplishment of unprecedented proportions. It is, without a doubt,  one of the most amazing (and important) pieces of technology that humanity has ever made. It allows us to simulate the earliest moments of our universe and, in so doing, better understand the physics that governs it.

Then there is the the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The JWST is Hubble’s successor, and it will be more sensitive by a factor of about 100 than all the telescopes that came before it. It could help us see some of the first stars forming in the universe. It could allow us to image planets orbiting alien stars. It will open up a world (a universe) of possibilities. We will be able to see farther and deeper than ever before.

However, despite all of these advancements, there is a lot that we don’t know. But where does knowledge stop and uncertainty begin? How much do we really know, and what remains in question?

We asked for your most pressing questions, and they came pouring in: Does intelligent life exist beyond Earth? What’s beyond the edge of our universe? Here, Fraser Cain, the founder of Universe Today, dives into the answers—separating what we know from what we’ve yet to discover.

See Part One of this series, and get more of your questions answered.

A Porter AIrlines aircraft similar to the one in this image took evasive action on Monday to avoid an unidentified flying object, possibly a drone or balloon, while descending into the Toronto area.

Two people suffered minor injuries after an aircraft swerved to avoid a “UFO” in the skies over Lake Ontario on Monday.

The Porter Airlines Dash 8 aircraft, which was carrying 54 passengers, encountered the object at about 9,000 feet as it descended into the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport.

“The pilots noticed an object in the distance (and) as they approached the object, they realized it was very close to their flight path,” Porter Airlines said in a statement, according to the Canadian Press.

At first the pilots thought it was a balloon. However, after debriefing, they said the object could have been a drone.

“Nobody knows at this point. It happened so quick,” Peter Rowntree, senior regional investigator with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, told The Star. “It definitely wasn’t a bird. It was a fairly large object.”

Two flight attendants were taken to an area hospital to be treated for minor injuries, the CBC reported.

The Canadian government is now working to pass new rules to regulate the growing number of drones, and possibly help prevent incidents such as this one.

There have been a number of close calls between aircraft and drones around the world, especially near airports. Earlier this year, a British Airways jet struck a drone while approaching London’s Heathrow Airport. No one was injured in that incident.

IN BRIEF
  • The exoplanet has five times the mass of our planet but does lie outside of the habitable zone of its star.
  • The search for exoplanets is more than just a search for habitable worlds, the understanding these discoveries can bring alone is worth the effort.

Scientists engaging in exoplanet hunting have recently seen a host of new discoveries. Teams of these celestial sleuths are combing the observable universe looking for a planet that might be capable of hosting life similar to our own.

Now, another exoplanet has been discovered, one with several intriguing characteristics. A new study reveals a “super Earth” orbiting GJ 536, a red dwarf star just 32.7 light years (10.03 parsecs) from Earth.

The planet’s “super Earth” classification comes from its size— super Earths are planets between one and fifteen times the mass of Earth. This planet is more than five Earth masses.

They also found that the planet has an orbital period of less than nine Earth days, and is just 0.06661 AU away from its star. The research studied data from ESO’s High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS) and HARPS-N instruments.

It’s not just the detection that is offering new opportunities in exoplanet research. The brightness of the red dwarf and the planet’s closeness to its star makes it an excellent candidate for transmission spectroscopy. That’s where scientists figure out the chemical composition of the atmosphere of the planet based on how the star’s light strikes the atmosphere.

ALIEN-LOOKING SKULL FROM PERUVIAN DESERT AWAITS FURTHER INVESTIGATION

ALIEN-LOOKING SKULL FROM PERUVIAN DESERT AWAITS FURTHER INVESTIGATION

The skull was found, along with several others, in a cave in the southern desert of Peru, the exact location will be given, hopefully, soon in the future.

The caretaker and the group that found this, along with other skulls, have no access to artisans or taxidermists that could have made them. The caretaker removed some of the bone from the underpart of the skull and exposed what is presumably marrow.

This, as well as the bone and skin can be sampled for DNA and radiocarbon testing in important laboratories in USA that they are working with already.

Other skulls have been found in recent years, the elongated skulls of Paracas in Peru caused a stir in 2014 when a geneticist that carried out preliminary DNA testing reported that they have mitochondrial DNA “with mutations unknown in any human, primate, or animal known so far”

Are these alien skulls? please watch video below and share your comments.

Voormalig Chinese overheidsfunctionaris bevestigt bestaan aliens tijdens UFO-top

Voormalig Chinese overheidsfunctionaris bevestigt bestaan aliens tijdens UFO-top
