Huge Unidentified Flying Object caught on Sat24 Africa Satellite

Huge Unidentified Flying Object caught on Sat24 Africa Satellite

A resident of TD near Boston was looking at the weather on Sat24 and noticed a huge unidentified flying object moving at very high speed between north Sudan and Chad.

UFO%2Brocket%2Bon%2BSat24%2Bsatelitte%2B%25281%2529.jpg

These pictures are taken from sat24 Africa satellite and daytime map on 23 July, 2017 and show a satellite image looking at the sub Saharan Africa region, specifically the border between Sudan and Chad.

At 09.30 there is nothing but cloud but at 10.00 you can clearly see something moving at high speed coming out of the border area between north Sudan and Chad.

At 10.15 the object is bigger and by the distance covered travelling at a very high speed, then at 10.30 it is gone. It seems to be coming out of north Sudan and curving into Chad in a SW direction.

UFO%2Brocket%2Bon%2BSat24%2Bsatelitte%2B%25282%2529.jpg

The witness states “Given the high speed and size of the object, it is absolutely no plane.” So, what is it, a rocket, a UFO? Mufon case 85291.

UFO Photographs Taken In London, England

UFO Photographs Taken In London, England

london-ufo

Do not fear the animal mutilations, crop circles, claims of “ancient astronauts,” lights in the sky or the strange new cults for the reason that we do not know yet if they exist. However, it has been decades since the sighting emerged, however, no definite answers yet. So the answer would merely depend on the belief you have. It was a hot summer day when the witness was sitting in the garden. Minutes later, he noticed something shiny in the sky. Of course, he knew that it was not an aeroplane as he is familiar with it. In fact, he lives under the flight paths to two different airports, the Heathrow heading to the North, and the Gatwick heading to the South.

The good thing is, the witness always takes his binoculars and camera outside, whether it is day or night. He took his camera and tried zooming in. He started taking pictures and managed to get five to six photos. The witness was scared when he looked at them and finally decided never to stay outside again. The witness shared the photos on his Instagram page by telling his followers what he saw. The UFO finally disappeared in the clouds, and that was the last time he saw. The next day he decided to stay in the garden to do some readings but noticed something red in the sky. He again took his camera out of his bag and started taking pictures, but only managed to get one pic since it was moving too fast. After seeing the images, he went inside because of fear. Since then, it has been hell since strange objects are coming over as soon as he goes outside to stargaze.

There is no rationale as to how these strange objects got there or why they exist, to begin with. There are tonnes of research to be done concerning the aliens and what they are. The witness was reliable enough to conclude what he saw. He has photos and people that can support his statements.

NASA Mars Rover Snapped The Clearest Alien UFO Ever

NASA Mars Rover Snapped The Clearest Alien UFO Ever

mars-rover-ufo

It does not matter how anyone personally feels political these days. Folks who take religion to literal extremes could care less as well as many of these people that the Earth will suffer a biblical or dogmatic fate. NASA, one of the leading space discovery areas, is one that has helped to provide new insights to those interested in space. Not only is this a part of the current events, but also invites discovery into the events that are designed to help with the discovery of the history of space science.

Recently, a clear photo showing an extraterrestrial spaceship went viral on the internet. The Mars Rover of NASA has snapped a photo that shows a strange object appearing on the Red Planet’s surface. The high-definition image shows the rocky landscape situated on the Mars. However, there is an object right in the middle of the image that looks entirely different. It has a metallic and smooth exterior. There is no denying that it bears a resemblance to a stereotypical spaceship. Certainly, it does not look like the natural forces made it.

However, NASA did announce that it had found a running water in 2015 on Mars. Guess what? There may be an existence of an alien right now. Moreover, the new development rise after the hacking group named Anonymous claimed by the space agency will eventually announce the fact that they saw aliens. Alien hunters post photos or videos online, claiming to be an alien craft. They are amateur footage so not convincing. However, the Rover of NASA is equipped with powerful lenses, so the image is incredibly clear. According to the conspiracy theorists, many people accuse NASA of covering up the alien existence – sometimes posting images from the surface of the Mars or the moon, claiming they show aliens or artefacts even if they are just an oddly shaped object or rock. But with the image posted on March, the discovery is challenging to explain.

Abandoned 'out of this world' UFO-shaped Soviet monument captured in incredible photographs

Explorer Bob Thissen snapped the incredible location saying it looked like a scene from a sci-fi film

BY MIRROR .CO.UK

Incredible photographs have captured a Soviet monument that looks like a UFO straight out of a sci-fi film.

With a large spaceship-shaped dome and a beaming silhouette from the centre it would be easy to confuse the Buzludzha monument with a scene from the movie Independence Day.

But the attraction near to Kazanluk, Bulgaria, played host to the country’s socialist communist party with its grandiose space, 70 metre tower and striking mosaic artwork.

Construction of the monument began on 23 January 1974 and opened on 23 August 1981. It cost roughly $35 million to build.

'Alien tank' found on the Moon, UFO hunters say

'Alien tank' found on the Moon, UFO hunters say

A mysterious object on the face of the moon could be a "tank" according to UFO researchers -- or it could be an "odd-shaped boulder."

SecureTeam 10, known for its YouTube channels, has published a video that purportedly shows an alien tank left by an unknown civilization.

UFO SIGHTING? VIDEO PURPORTEDLY SHOWING MASSIVE LIGHT OVER PARIS RAISES QUESTIONS

“A tank-like object has been discovered on the moon, scattered among what appears to be ruins of some sort,” SecureTeam10 said in the video.

The researchers, who have drummed up several other UFO-related videos, also noted that it could be an odd-shaped rock not seen before.

Below is the video in its entirety:

The video also appears to show tracks on the moon, though the experts did not say whether the tracks and the purported tank were connected.

SecureTeam 10, which has nearly 800,000 YouTube subscribers, often runs conspiracy theory-based videos. The organization describes itself as the "source for reporting the best in new UFO sighting news, info on the space cover-up, and the strange activity happening on and off of our planet."

UFO that morphs into odd shapes appears across Cornwall leaving locals baffled to its origin, but is there a simple explanation?

  • A strange looking object has been seen flittering over the skies of Cornwall
  • Locals posted clips to social media of the shimmering black object in the sky
  • Its movements across the county were uncharacteristic of a flock of birds
  • The Eden Project who are launching a space show have laid claim to the UFO

A strange looking object seen flittering over the skies of Cornwall left locals bemused, with some believing that aliens had paid a visit to the UK's southernmost county.

A number of clips taken over the past couple of days shows a shimmering black object in the sky morphing into different shapes and sizes, uncharacteristic of a flock of birds.

Surfer Kiefer Krishnan, caught the strange object on his Go-Pro camera while hitting the waves on Monday.

The same day photographer Shayne House spotted the UFO, which appears to disappear and re-materialise, over the A30, declaring on Twitter: 'What the?! Is this an alien spacecraft over the A30?'

Also on Monday Harry Wild, who works in food marketing, caught the object over Fistral beach and asked on Twitter if anyone else had seen it.

On Tuesday, there were more sightings with beauty blogger Stephanie, who runs the 'cocochic' website,  also recording the mysterious moving shades in the sky while going to the hairdressers in Truro.

She tweeted: 'filmed this in Truro today before my hair apt..can someone please explain?'

Others commented that it looked like a swarm of birds or insects.

The belief that aliens may have chosen Cornwall as their first landing point on Earth was short lived however.

The Eden Project, who are hosting its new Journey Into Space attraction on July 27, have hinted that they had something to do with the quickly moving black smudge in the skies.

A spokesperson for the centre said: 'It's true we have a galaxy of ways to tell the story of space at Eden this summer. To coin a phrase… ''The truth is out there.''

Alien truth-seekers discover 'underground UFO base' at Area 51 in remarkable video

Alien truth-seekers discover 'underground UFO base' at Area 51 in remarkable video

ALIEN fanatics claim they’ve found an underground UFO base in the secretive Area 51.

By Simon Green

The highly-classified air base in Nevada, US, is commonly believed to hold extra-terrestrial life-forms by conspiracy theorists.

And so-called truth-seekers Blake and Brett Cousins have added to this theory by finding what they believe is “UFO hangar” buried into the mountains nearby.

The pair used Google Earth to show aerial images of the strange sighting.

“Right in this mountain range, if you see this driveway it seems to lead to some kind of hidden underground entrance,” Blake says.

“Are these two entries to a base within this mountain range?

“Are they harvesting minerals out of this mountain or is this an entrance to a military base?

The supposed hangar

MYSTERY: Is this an alien hangar near Area 51?

“These are never-before-seen images. Is this a possible entrance where they’re hiding the UFOs and flying saucers recovered from Roswell?”

The clip has been seen more than 35,000 times since it was posted to the brothers’ YouTube channel, thirdphaseofmoon.

“Whatever they have hidden from people there, must be huge,” one user commented.

Another added: “The mountain itself looks almost like an alien craft.”

But a third suggested: “That underground facility might be used for the storage of nuclear weapons or nuclear waste.”

Area 51’s primary purpose is unknown, although many believe it is the site of experimental aircraft and weapons testing.

There are others, though, who strongly believe the US Air Force holds alien life-forms and equipment there.

Bob Lazar in 1989 he had worked at Area 51 with alien spacecraft, that the US government had in its possession.

More and more footage of apparent UFOs have surfaced in recent weeks.

A shimmering black object was spotted multiple times over Cornwall.

And an alleged “alien mothership” was caught on camera hovering near the International Space Station.

UFOs in CORNWALL? Locals baffled after multiple sightings across county

UFOs in CORNWALL? Locals baffled after multiple sightings across county

UFO hunters are convinced they have found solid evidence of alien life over Cornwall as dozens of locals reported seeing a strange translucent, shimmering craft in the sky.

Over the past week, residents of Cornwall have reported seeing a strange shimmering object in the sky which some believe is proof that extraterrestrials are visiting.

The odd phenomenon was first spotted on Monday by surfer Kiefer Krishnan, who caught it on his Go-Pro camera, and uploaded it to Instagram with the caption: “Looking through the GoPro footage and found the Strangest sighting at the end of the vid.”

Since then, a flurry of videos were uploaded to social media sites, all of which were spotted in different locations across the southwestern tip of England.

Harry Wild wrote on Twitter: “Odd sighting at #Fistral today. Anyone else see it? #ufocornwall”.

Are aliens visiting Cornwall?

Numerous other sightings have emerged of the bizarre 0UFO, leaving residents baffled.

Some have speculated that it could be a flock of birds or insects, but as it has a similar shape over several days and in the same locations, experts say this is unlikely.

Others, however, theorise that it could be a publicity stunt from the Eden Project, which is set to open its new Journey Into Space attraction on July 27.

A spokesperson for the Eden Project told Cornwall Live: "It's true we have a galaxy of ways to tell the story of space at Eden this summer. To coin a phrase… 'The truth is out there'."

People across the county have been stunned to see the shimmering black object flying overhead

BY LEE TREWHELA

A flying object has prompted speculation a UFO has taken to the skies above Cornwall.

People across the county have been stunned to see the shimmering black object flying overhead .

It has been seen over Truro city centre, Carluddon clay tip, Fistral beach in Newquay, over the A30, above Roche Rock and by a surfer above the sea off the Cornish coast.

People have taken to social media in their droves after witnessing the weird object.

The first to spot it was surfer Kiefer Krishnan, who caught it on his Go-Pro camera, which he posted on his Instagram account on Monday.

Dan Goodwin took to Twitter when he captured footage of "this weirdness" at the clay tip near St Austell. His film was retweeted 78 times.

The final sighting, so far, was by a Steph – who goes by the name CocochicBlog – who caught the odd object on her phone above Truro while on the way to a hair appointment.

Cornwall Live has approached various agencies about these sightings but no one has any answers.

The Eden Project has launched its new Journey Into Space attraction on Thursday, July 27, and wondered if these supposed UFOs had anything to do with that.

Europe's Biggest UFO Conference Did Not Make Me Want to Believe

Europe's Biggest UFO Conference Did Not Make Me Want to Believe

Awakening was billed as the place "where ufology and conspiracy meets spirituality and consciousness." I found Flat Earth truthers and Darth Vader instead.

I hadn't even entered Europe's biggest UFO convention before someone handed me a pamphlet linking Satan to aliens, featuring a quote attributed to Jesus that was apparently uttered by the Son of God sometime in September of 1985. I'd gone with my friends, Tom and Matt, to check out Awakening, billed as the place "where ufology and conspiracy meets spirituality and consciousness."

A month or so ago, Tom texted me a link to the event page. I knew I had to go as soon as I saw it—we wanted to challenge our deeply-held beliefs and see if they would stand up to all the ideas and theories we'd read about in obscure corners of the internet. Was the Earth flat? Are politicians actually reptilian humanoids? Why not go in with an open mind?

As Tom finished his cigarette, a man dressed as Darth Vader emerged out of the venue, followed closely by a troop of Stormtroopers. The Bowlers Exhibition Center in Manchester usually plays host to Elvis impersonator concerts and the Great Northern Ska Festival, but I doubted the 84,000 square feet hall had ever encountered this mix of sci-fi enthusiasts, New Age kooks, Flat Earth conspiracy theorists, and people otherwise willing to fork out anywhere between £15 to £100 for a ticket to drink in a Star Wars inspired cantina bar.

When Tom threw his cigarette butt on the ground, a woman handing out pamphlets to asked him to be a good lad and pick it up and put it in the bin. "They'll get ya," she added in a thick Mancunian accent, looking around conspiratorially.

Watch: Casting Curses and Love Spells with the Most Powerful Witches in Romania

This was the first Awakening expo, but the packed crowd clearly didn't care that this was its maiden voyage. People stood around the entrance, spinning on their heels and deciding where to go first: the stalls selling everything from Pokémon toys, healing crystals and VHS tapes for 20 pence apiece? The Area 51 mock-up, complete with a UFO guarded by two alien "greys" with bulging, orb-like eyes? As we decided on a plan for the day, Tom nudged me, and I looked up to see a man dressed as Elvis circling the Pokémon stall, talking to a friend.

On our way to a talk titled "The Secret Life of Teas: A Journey Into Plant Intelligence and How It Can Guide Our Personal Evolution," we walked past two men dressed as men in black, complete with sunglasses and earpieces. "Cool costumes," I said to Matt. "Is that what they want you to think?" he replied.

Read more: Hot for Truther: Inside the Website Where Conspiracy Theorists Find Love

Anne, the founder of Attic Teas, a Bristol-based tea company and cafe, took to the stage in front of about 25 people. Hydration, she informed us, was important to reach a higher state of being, and vibrations were key to reaching this higher consciousness.

We lined up to be served a small paper cup of tea and returned to our seats. According to Anne, it was a blend of Attic Teas' own making; once we'd drunk it, she would help us through a guided meditation routine. I downed mine and enjoyed the slightly herb-y aftertaste as Anne fiddled around with her laptop for a few seconds. "Notice the energy of your breath," a soothing voice radiated from the speakers. "Notice how it feels."

Darth Vader had clearly circled back to the venue; I could hear his distinctive breathing from somewhere in the crowd. Maybe he was a fan of artisanal teas and guided meditation. Despite the distractions, most of Anne's audience kept their eyes closed. I did feel relaxed and kind of spaced out, even though it sounded like Darth Vader was wheezing directly in my ear.

A rapt audience at a talk about how humanity was descended from lizards.

"We will definitely be attending next year," Anne said in an email after the event. "It was right up our street!" When I asked what a tea company had to do with conspiracy theories, and UFOs, she replied that she didn't really like the term "conspiracy theory" because it "sets an 'us versus them' tone."

"We should all be encouraged to question things and discover alternatives," she added. "For me, the power of possibility is what I find intriguing, the invisible world of vibrational energy, intention and ancient wisdom that comes from everything, not just humanity."

On another stage, Flat-Earth truther Darren Nesbit was just beginning a talk with the somewhat protracted title: "A Fixed Plane Earth Presentation. Exposing The Lies of NASA, The World Governments and Media."

Nesbit, a solemn bald man with a beard, admitted that a talk on the flat Earth might seem incongruous at a UFO convention, but explained that it was the perfect setting for it because everyone was here "seeking truth." As the name suggests, Flat Earthers believe that we live on a flat plane, instead of a round, sphere-like planet. (You might think that any number of NASA pictures would be enough to dissuade them, but Flat Earthers also believe that NASA is in on the conspiracy.)

The talk began with an image from The Truman Show (1998) featuring Jim Carrey ascending the stairs at the edge of his film set world, about to discover the truth of what lies behind his life. Its caption read: "We accept the reality of the world with which we are presented."

Nesbitt's talk went down a storm: All the seats were taken, and people had lined up at the back to listen to him speak. After the event, he said that getting the Flat Earth message out was usually a lot harder. "I try to look for the right opening to bring it up, normally with humor," he said on email. "It's easier if you start with money, politics—things that people are familiar with and know there's something dodgy about to begin with."

According to its organizers, Awakening was a "phenomenal success"—tickets for their 2018 expo have already been released. The 2,500 people that walked through its doors, they said, were proof that "more and more people are seeking answers to the biggest questions of mankind and our true origins." One thing I do know is that I came out with more questions than when I went in, but maybe next year I'll just go for the tea.

Mystery surrounds UFO spotted on Sydney’s northern beaches

MYSTERY surrounds a possible UFO sighting photographed by people on the northern beaches this month.

Narrabeen’s Gus Medero captured a close-up shot of the bizarre object and he was one of several witnesses at a loss to explain it.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority has also described the object as “a mystery”.

Mr Medero was taking sunrise photos at Avalon’s Bangalley Head on July 5, about 7am, when his camera also captured a large white dot in the sky above the sun.

Medero said the unidentified object looked to have “four jet streams coming out” of it.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” Mr Medero said.

Mr Medero said the object — which was moving in upwards — was most likely a satellite, if he had to guess.

Cromer’s Blake Hirst also took photographs of the object, from Dee Why Beach.

He, along with others at the beach at the time, said he noticed the object move from one side of the rising sun to the other before it disappeared upwards into the atmosphere.

“It’s the strangest thing I’ve ever seen,” he said.

“I’m not one to believe in UFOs or ghosts or anything like that but it makes you wonder. Some guy made a joke that it was the North Koreans sending a missile.”

Asked if he thought it could have been a drone or a plane, Mr Hirst said: “The way it took off and shot up to space, it could have been a drone ... but I don’t know.

“It seemed it was going way too fast to be a drone — it was going faster than an aeroplane.”

Mr Hirst said it looked like lights were “flashing on and off” from the object.

Belrose woman Bernice Camf also saw the object from her home and believed it was “space junk”.

A spokesman for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority viewed photos of the object and said it was a mystery as to what it was.

At that time of the morning the light often makes things look different than they are,” he said.

It’s a close encounter of the blurred kind.

A video filmed in the east end of Glasgow on Monday has attracted debate online over whether or not it captures a UFO.

The clip, uploaded by David Rhodes, shows a bright circular light in the distance.

Rhodes said in a comment posted online: “It disappeared right after the video ended and the sky was clear - spooky.”

Amateur photographs and videos of UFOs have a huge following, with the town of Bonnybridge, near Falkirk, being a mecca for enthusiasts from all over the world.

Earlier this year pictures of an UFO spotted near the Kelpies went viral.

Heather McEwan, from Falkirk, took some shots of the famous landmark in May and later spotted a strange object in the image she had taken.

Heather said: “I came home and it wasn’t till the following day when I was showing my daughter the pictures that she spotted a strange object.

“Curious I took the camera to Asda and had the picture blown up. I contacted UFO website BEAMS (The British Earth and Aerial Mysteries Society) and sent the picture.

“They were very interested and asked me to send the original files which I did. After examining the files they have agreed that it is not a plane or drone, nor is it a reflection from a camera and have now put it up as a UFO on their website.”

If I Worked for the Government, I'd Ask About UFOs

If I Worked for the Government, I'd Ask About UFOs

Wouldn't you?

I have a confession to make. If I were a member of Congress, I would ask serious questions like Al Franken and Elizabeth Warren do, but I'd also ask questions like the one that Congressman Dana Rohrabacher threw at Ken Farley on Tuesday. Farley is a Mars specialist from NASA. Rohrabacher is a congresscritter from California. The following dialogue ensued, from Ars Technica.

"You have indicated that Mars was totally different thousands of years ago. Is it possible that there was a civilization on Mars thousands of years ago?"

"So the evidence is that Mars was different billions of years ago. Not thousands of years ago."

"Well, yes." "And, umm, there would be, there's no evidence that, uhh, I'm aware of," Farley continued.

"Would you rule that out? See, there's some people... Well, anyway."

"I would say that is extremely unlikely."

Admit it. You'd ask about stuff like this, too. Hell, Bill Clinton wasn't in office for six months before he was asking the Air Force about UFOs. Hillary Rodham Clinton talked about them while running in 2016. One of the least damaging revelations by WikiLeaks that came out of the hack of John Podesta's account was Podesta's abiding interest in the same subject, via NBC News:

Podesta also got multiple emails from Blink-182 guitarist and UFO enthusiast Tom DeLonge. They revealed that Podesta took part in a documentary about extraterrestrials by DeLonge was producing. And they revealed that DeLonge was interested in introducing Podesta to people who shared their UFO obsession. "I think you will find them very interesting, as they were principal leadership relating to our sensitive topic," DeLonge wrote in an Oct. 26, 2015 email. "Both were in charge of most fragile divisions, as it relates to Classified Science and DOD topics." "Just looking to have a casual, and private conversation in person," the email states.

Also, I'd advise you all not to elect me president, because I would go completely bananas on this kind of stuff.

filmed this in truro today before my hair apt..can someone please explain? 😐 #ufocornwall

Top five places to look for extraterrestrial life

Top five places to look for extraterrestrial life

It’s a mighty big universe, but ET hunters are zeroing in on these prime candidates, reports Andrew Masterson.

For all the hope and expectation, it is sobering to recall that, despite the best efforts of scientists and engineers, there is still no evidence that life exists anywhere beyond our own planet. There are, however, some planetary prime suspects. Here are the five places astronomers and astrobiologists think are the best chances for harbouring ET.

1. LHS 1140b

News of this planet, a “rocky super-earth”, was announced in the journal Nature in April. Orbiting a red dwarf 39 light-years from Earth, the planet sits in its star’s habitable zone and has an estimated mass almost seven times that of our own planet, leading to the assumption that it comprises rock encasing a solid iron core. According to Jason Dittmann of the Harvard Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics in Massachusetts, US, LHS 1140b’s density means it might have survived the runaway global warming thought to denude many red dwarf planets. If so, it might now boast a stable atmosphere and liquid water. “This is the most exciting exoplanet I’ve seen in the past decade,” he said. “We could hardly hope for a better target to perform one of the biggest quests in science – searching for evidence of life beyond Earth.

2. Enceladus

Thanks to data from NASA’s Cassini spacecraft, Saturn’s moon Enceladus has emerged as every ET-hunter’s favourite target – mainly due to the strong likelihood that it features a subterranean ocean. In April this year, a team of scientists from the South West Research Institute (SWRI) in Texas, US, revealed a plume of hydrogen erupting from the moon’s surface. The plume may well be evidence of hydrothermal vents in the subsurface ocean – the same type of vents that support extremophile life on earth. “The discovery of hydrogen gas and the evidence for ongoing hydrothermal activity offer a tantalising suggestion that habitable conditions could exist beneath the moon’s icy crust,” says principal investigator Hunter Waite.

3. Titan

Another of Saturn’s 53 moons, Titan is known to have permanent hydrocarbon lakes, a nitrogen-heavy atmosphere, and possibly a subsurface ocean beneath a salty crust. It is a possible host for either water-dependent or methane-dependent life.

4. Proxima-b

This planet, discovered in August 2016, orbits the star Proxima Centauri, 4.2 light-years away from our sun, and is the nearest candidate beyond the solar system for hosting ET. Research in May’s Astronomy & Astrophysics journal found the chances of life existing on the planet may hinge on its orbital speed. Astrophysicists at the University of Exeter calculated that if Proxima-b rotates on its axis three times for every two times it orbits its sun, then the chances of it being habitable are substantially improved.

5. Trappist-1

The announcement of the Trappist-1 system in February, with seven rocky planets orbiting an ultracool dwarf star, sent ripples of excitement through astrobiologists everywhere. At least three of the planets looked like they were within the star’s habitable zone. The latest analysis, by Eric Wolf from the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado, Boulder, US, has somewhat dampened expectations, suggesting that only one of the group has life-sustaining potential. But never mind: one chance in seven is still better than no chance at all.

Two large UFOs have been seen flying over Chelmsford

Two large UFOs have been seen flying over Chelmsford

UFO

What could the object be?

A man has described his surprise at seeing two large UFOs in the sky over Chelmsford.

The resident, who did not want to be named, saw the objects in the air over Manor Road where he lives on Monday afternoon (July 17).

The two UFOs, which were different shapes, were first spotted by a group of people in the street just outside the city centre.

The man who contacted Essex Live said he was in his garden when he saw a small group of passers-by staring up into the sky.

"I heard one of them say 'is it a bird?' but then the others said 'that is no bird'," he said.

No one who saw the objects had any idea what they were

"When I looked up I saw two large objects in the sky. They were jet black underneath. They were quite big and quite high up. They were sort of rolling over and over in the sky. At first I thought they were bits of a large balloon but they didn't move like that.

"Then I wondered if they were bits of plastic that had got up into the sky but they were moving faster than the wind which didn't make sense. One was almost a cylinder shape and the other was longer. It was very strange.

"There is no way they were aeroplanes. At this point I rushed indoors to get my camera and when I came back they had moved a bit further away but I managed to get a few snaps.

The objects were said to be moving 'faster than the wind'

"I have never seen anything like it before. I have no clue what they were. They seemed to be almost linked together as they kept at roughly the same distance apart the whole time.

"I watched them move off into the distance as they headed towards the cricket ground but then I lost sight of them. I wouldn't like to say what they were, I really have no idea."

The man has since showed the photos to "six or seven" people and no one has been able to hazard a guess at what they might be.

Alien ships near Saturn? Ex-NASA scientist claims of their existence

Alien ships near Saturn? Ex-NASA scientist claims of their existence

AN ENGINEER who previously worked at NASA Ames Research Center has claimed UFOs are hiding in the rings of Saturn.

UFOs are hiding in the rings of Saturn.

A FORMER NASA engineer at the Ames Research Center claims aliens are in our solar system and they are creating rings around planets like Saturn.

Dr. Norman Bergrun, who previously worked at NASA Ames Research Center has recently made comments that UFOs are hiding in the rings of Saturn.

According to conspiracy theory channel, SecureTeam10, which obtained Bergrun’s comments, the alien ships have been here for some time.

“Alien spacecraft are proliferating in our solar system and around these ringed planets,” Bergrun is quoted as saying on the video.

Bergrun also noted the aircraft are by the other ringed-planets in the solar system, including Jupiter and Uranus.

SecureTeam 10, which has nearly 900,000 YouTube subscribers, often runs conspiracy theory-based videos. The organisation describes itself as the “source for reporting the best in new UFO sighting news, info on the space cover-up, and the strange activity happening on and off of our planet.”

Bergrun wrote the 1986 book entitled Ringmakers of Saturn. The book highlights that there are massive alien ships around Saturn (which Bergrun dubs “ring makers”), including ones which have actually created some of the rings around the gas giant.

Bergrun made similar claims about Saturn in 2016.

A New Theory on Why We Haven’t Found Aliens Yet

A New Theory on Why We Haven’t Found Aliens Yet

They’re sleeping.

494086180 Maybe there is intelligent life out there, but it’s napping at the moment.

forplayday/Thinkstock

After decades of searching, we still haven’t discovered a single sign of extraterrestrial intelligence. Probability tells us life should be out there, so why haven’t we found it yet?

The problem is often referred to as Fermi’s paradox, after the Nobel Prize–winning physicist Enrico Fermi, who once asked his colleagues this question at lunch. Many theories have been proposed over the years. It could be that we are simply alone in the universe or that there is some great filter that prevents intelligent life progressing beyond a certain stage. Maybe alien life is out there, but we are too primitive to communicate with it, or we are placed inside some cosmic zoo, observed but left alone to develop without external interference. Now, three researchers think they think they may have another potential answer to Fermi’s question: Aliens do exist; they’re just all asleep.

According to a new research paper accepted for publication in the Journal of the British Interplanetary Society, extraterrestrials are sleeping while they wait. In the paper, authors from Oxford’s Future of Humanity Institute and the Astronomical Observatory of Belgrade Anders Sandberg, Stuart Armstrong, and Milan Cirkovic argue that the universe is too hot right now for advanced, digital civilizations to make the most efficient use of their resources. The solution: Sleep and wait for the universe to cool down, a process known as aestivating (like hibernation but sleeping until it’s colder).

Understanding the new hypothesis first requires wrapping your head around the idea that the universe’s most sophisticated life may elect to leave biology behind and live digitally. Having essentially uploaded their minds onto powerful computers, the civilizations choosing to do this could enhance their intellectual capacities or inhabit some of the harshest environments in the universe with ease.

The idea that life might transition toward a post-biological form of existence is gaining ground among experts. “It’s not something that is necessarily unavoidable, but it is highly likely,” Cirkovic told me in an interview.

Once you’re living digitally, Cirkovic explained, it’s important to process information efficiently. Each computation has a certain cost attached to it, and this cost is tightly coupled with temperature. The colder it gets, the lower the cost is, meaning you can do more with the same amount of resources. This is one of the reasons why we cool powerful computers. Though humans may find the universe to be a pretty frigid place (the background radiation hovers about 3 kelvins above absolute zero, the very lower limit of the temperature scale), digital minds may find it far too hot.

Just because the aliens are asleep doesn’t mean we can’t find signs of them.

But why aestivate? Surely any aliens wanting more efficient processing could cool down their systems manually, just as we do with computers. In the paper, the authors concede this is a possibility. “While it is possible for a civilization to cool down parts of itself to any low temperature,” the authors write, that, too, requires work. So it wouldn’t make sense for a civilization looking to maximize its computational capacity to waste energy on the process. As Sandberg and Cirkovic elaborate in a blog post, it’s more likely that such artificial life would be in a protected sleep mode today, ready to wake up in colder futures.

If such aliens exist, they’re in luck. The universe appears to be cooling down on its own. Over the next trillions of years, as it continues to expand and the formation of new stars slows, the background radiation will reduce to practically zero. Under those conditions, Sandberg and Cirkovic explain, this kind of artificial life would get “tremendously more done.” Tremendous isn’t an understatement, either. The researchers calculate that by employing such a strategy, they could achieve up to 1030 times more than if done today. That’s a 1 with 30 zeroes after it.

But just because the aliens are asleep doesn’t mean we can’t find signs of them. Any aestivating civilization has to preserve resources it intends to use in the future. Processes that waste or threaten these resources, then, should be conspicuously absent, thanks to interference from the aestivators. (If they are sufficiently advanced to upload their minds and aestivators, they should be able to manipulate space.) This includes galaxies colliding, galactic winds venting matter into intergalactic space, and stars converting into black holes, which can push resources beyond the reach of the sleeping civilization or change them into less-useful forms.

Another strategy to find the sleeping aliens, Cirkovic said, might be to try and meddle with the aestivators’ possessions and territory, which we may already reside within. One way of doing this would be to send out self-replicating probes into the universe that would steal the aestivators’ things. Any competent species ought to have measures in place to respond to these kind of threats. “It could be an exceptionally dangerous test,” he cautioned, “but if there really are very old and very advanced civilizations out there, we can assume there is a potential for danger in anything we do.”

Interestingly, neither Sandberg nor Cirkovic said they have much faith in finding anything. Sandberg, writing on his blog, states that he does not believe the hypothesis to be a likely one: “I personally think the likeliest reason we are not seeing aliens is not that they are aestivating.” He writes that he feels it’s more likely that “they do not exist or are very far away.”

Cirkovic concurred. “I don’t find it very likely, either,” he said in our interview. “I much prefer hypotheses that do not rely on assuming intentional decisions made by extraterrestrial societies. Any assumption is extremely speculative.” There could be forms of energy that we can’t even conceive of using now, he said—producing antimatter in bulk, tapping evaporating black holes, using dark matter. Any of this could change what we might expect to see from an advanced technical civilization.

Yet, he said, the theory has a place. It’s important to cover as much ground as possible. You need test a wide set of hypotheses one by one—falsifying them, pruning them—to get closer to the truth. “This is how science works. We need to have as many hypotheses and explanations for Fermi’s paradox as possible,” he said.

Plus, there’s a modest likelihood their aestivating aliens idea might be part of the answer, Cirkovic said. We shouldn’t expect a single hypothesis to account for Fermi’s paradox. It will be more of a “patchwork-quilt kind of solution,” he said.

And it’s important to keep exploring solutions. Fermi’s paradox is so much more than an intellectual exercise. It’s about trying to understand what might be out there and how this might explain our past and guide our future.

Top Comment

There is an obvious solution to the Fermi Paradox but few people accept it because it is the least appealing alternative- The universe is fundamentally limited.  More...

“I would say that 90-plus percent of hypotheses that were historically proposed to account for Fermi’s paradox have practical consequences,” Cirkovic said. They allow us to think proactively about some of the problems we as a species face, or may one day face, and prompt us to develop strategies to actively shape a more prosperous and secure future for humanity. “We can apply this reasoning to our past, to the emergence of life and complexity. We can also apply similar reasoning to thinking about our future. It can help us avoid catastrophes and help us understand the most likely fate of intelligent species in the universe.”

105 UFO Sightings in Oneida County Since 2001

Have you ever seen something you can’t explain in the night sky? According to a new book, 105 people have reporting seeing something unusual in the skies above Oneida County.

Syracuse-based authors Cheryl Costa and Linda Miller Costa have put together a new reference book that takes a look at all the UFO sighting data in the United States since 2001 through 2015, and, spoiler alert: there are a LOT.

According to a press release, Cheryl Costa is a columnist for the Syracuse New Times in Syracuse, NY, retired aerospace industry information security professional, and a combat veteran who served in both the U.S. Air Force and Navy. Linda Miller Costa, M.L.S, worked in scientific research and publishing at The National Academies of Sciences and the Environmental Protection Agency. She is currently employed by LeMoyne College in Syracuse, NY.

According to their new book:

  • There were more than 121,000 eyewitness accounts during those years.
  • California led the nation in reports, at 15,836.
  • Florida, Texas, Washington State, Pennsylvania, New York, Arizona, Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio round out the top 10 states for reported eyewitness sightings.

They drilled down into the data to get really specific about Central New York sightings:

  • There were 105 UFO sightings in Oneida County, 23 in Madison County, and 31 in Herkimer County.
  • The City of Utica was responsible for 38 reports, while Rome made 19.
  • Sightings are more common in the months of June through October.
  • There were 468 UFO sightings in CNY, and 5141 in New York State.

I wonder why folks in Utica saw more? Is it because some of the buildings are a bit taller and we’re able to see a little farther? Or maybe it has something to do with the bars down on Varick Street and Saranac Thursdays…hmmm.

The Costas suggest, in a New York Times interview,  that most sightings can be explained by some earthly phenomena but a few are truly inexplicable.

According to the New York Times article, entitled “People Are Seeing U.F.O.s Everywhere, and This Book Proves It”:

One of the most intriguing occurred on the afternoon of Sept. 17, 2011, when a man on the roof terrace of the New Museum on the Bowery photographed a fast-moving diamond-shaped object with windows and flashing blue and red lights against the TriBeCa skyline.

The book, “The UFO Sightings Desk Reference: United States of America 2001-2015″ by Cheryl Costa and Linda Miller Costa, is available from Amazon.

What do you think? Are UFO sightings real or imagined?

Are aliens real? All the evidence, sightings and conspiracy theories on whether extraterrestrials exist

FROM Roswell to Rendlesham Forest in the UK, these are the most notorious stories of “alien encounters”.

DO aliens exist? The question has baffled people for centuries.

From Roswell to the Rendlesham Forest incident in the UK, these are the sightings and conspiracy theories which UFO hunters reckon are proof of extraterrestrial life.

How many alien and UFO sightings have there been?

Numbers of UFO sightings are currently flying at an highest, according to data cruncher and blogger Sam Monfort.

This woman says she can speak to alien

The alien “expert” reckons there have been nearly 105,000 recorded UFO sightings in the past 100-plus years. And Sam is far from the only believer on our planet.

From an ‘alien autopsy’ video dating back to 1995 to a video of fighter jets apparently chasing a UFO over the M5, there are hundreds of videos which people claim are proof of alien life.

There’s even a clip of a UFO supposedly attacking a Taliban compound, as well as ‘sightings’ in Peckham and Warminster.

Most of the videos have been debunked by experts. In the M5 clip, for example, the motorway lorries look like models.

While the Peckham UFOs were “almost certainly Chinese lanterns”, former Ministry of Defence UFO investigator Nick Pope told The Sun.

He added that “true believers wouldn’t be dissuaded” by evidence the videos are fake.

Meanwhile, popstar Peter Andre claims to have seen “several UFOs” on a family trip to the Nevada desert.

The desert is also the site of America’s famous Area 51 — a highly classified military base at the centre of alien conspiracy theories, because of scores of sighting of UFOs in the area.

And artist Dave Huggins believes he lost his virginity to a busty alien called Crescent — and has fathered 60 ‘hybrid’ babies.

Some people even believe this picture of Jesus’ crucifixion — which hangs on the walls of the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in Georgia — is proof of alien life thousands of years ago.

What is the Roswell UFO incident?

The Roswell UFO incident is a world-renowned conspiracy theory about the existence of aliens.

In the summer of 1947, a farmer discovered unidentifiable debris in his sheep fields just outside Roswell, New Mexico.

A local air force base claimed the debris came from a crashed hot air balloon, but many people reckon it’s really the remains of a flying saucer.

The debate rumbles on, with people continuing to make claims about “leaked US government documents”, which supposedly prove it was a cover-up.

What happened at Rendlesham Forest?

Dubbed the ‘British Roswell’, a similar incident happened in Rendlesham Forest in 1980.

On December 26, Military personnel from RAF Bentwaters and RAF Woodbridge, in Suffolk, saw strange lights in a nearby forest — and three of them were sent out to investigate.

Two of them encountered a small, triangular shaped craft — which they later drew images of.

One man, Jim Penniston, got close enough to touch the side of the object.

Two nights later, Deputy Base Commander Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt and his team also encountered the UFO — and were left baffled by the entire experience.

Are there any other alien conspiracy theories?

Marilyn Monroe’s death remains shrouded in mystery, and a new conspiracy theory claims the actress was murdered by the US government — after threatening to reveal top-secret information about aliens.

The bonkers theory was revealed in UFO documentary Unacklowedged.

It is claimed that Marilyn made the threats after having affairs with both President JFK and Bobby Kennedy, and was seeking revenge as they both simultaneously ended things with her.

What is Britain’s secret UFO dossier?

An official government UFO dossier, referred to as Britain’s X Files, contains a cache of 15 unusual incidents in British skies.

It has now been released by the Ministry of Defence but, in news which is sending believers wild, they’re making it very difficult to get hold of.

Sun Online exclusively revealed that Freedom of Information requests in relation to the dossier could be blocked, because it is hushed up by EU law.

The University of Manchester and Breakthrough Initiatives are currently running their own £77 million hunt for alien life — but experts are yet to find any concrete proof.

There is certainly no shortage of alien hunters.

What have NASA said about aliens?

NASA are the experts in space activity, but they remain notoriously tight-lipped when it comes to alien life.

However, they were recently forced to deny claims from hacking group Anonymous — that an alien announcement was imminent.

They have also rejected bizarre claims from former CIA case officer Robert David Steele — who said NASA are running a child sex slave colony on Mars.

To date, there is no evidence of life beyond Earth — but, when it comes to unexplained events, the finger is often pointed at alien activity.

‘A civilization on Mars thousands of years ago’: Congressman stuns NASA scientists

‘A civilization on Mars thousands of years ago’: Congressman stuns NASA scientists

direct.jpg?fit=704%2C391

A California congressman baffled a panel of space experts testifying in Washington when he asked if it was possible that Mars was home to an ancient alien civilization. The panel told him that there was “no evidence” and it would be “extremely unlikely.”

A hearing before the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology on Tuesday was interrupted when Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-California) requested additional time to ask the panel of scientists with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) if there was any evidence of archaic extraterrestrials living on the red planet.

‘A civilization on Mars thousands of years ago’: Congressman stuns NASA scientists

“You have indicated that Mars was totally different thousands of years ago,” said Rohrabacher, who is the vice chairman of the Science, Space and Technology Committee and a member of the Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee since he first entered Congress in 1989.

“Is it possible that there was a civilization on Mars thousands of years ago?” he asked.

Kenneth Farley, a professor of geochemistry at California Institute of Technology who worked on the Mars 2020 rover mission, fielded Rohrabacher’s question by first clarifying that “the evidence is that Mars was different billions of years ago, not thousands of years ago.”

“Billions… Well, yes,” Rohrabacher responded.

“There’s no evidence that I’m aware of,” Farley added before Rohrabacher interrupted.

“Would you rule that out? See, there’s some people… Well, anyway,”Rohrabacher said before being interrupted by Farley.

“I would say that is extremely unlikely,” Farley responded.

While it is unclear what Rohrabacher meant by “some people,” NASA recently had to respond to comments made by an InfoWars guest who claimed that there was a colony of kidnapped child slaves on Mars. NASA denied that there are any humans on the red planet.

Twitter erupted on Tuesday with many ridiculing Rohrabacher over his question.

Not a joke, sadly. With this vital question answered, perhaps NASA can tell us if there's civilization in Congressman Rohrabacher! https://twitter.com/ReaganBattalion/status/887432215109529600 …

Hypercivilisations and the primitive extraterrestrial hypothesis

Exoplanets NASA ftr

Hypercivilisations and the primitive extraterrestrial hypothesis

More and more specialists admit that life is everywhere in Universe and three-four billion years of favourable conditions, lasting on a planet, ensures the emergence and development of intelligent beings and eventually the birth of a “technological civilization”, capable of building spaceships, for travelling to other inhabitable planets. These conditions, though rare, are found in many places in the immensity of the universe. On this basis, the extraterrestrial hypothesis became the easiest way to explain the UFO phenomenon.

UFOs-Over-Romania

On the other hand, prestigious ufologists, including Dr J. Allen Hynek or Jacques Vallée, questioned this explanation. They, along with die-hard sceptics, have mentioned, among others, that the distances between civilizations are too large for such cosmic travelling. But, as I have argued in my recent book “UFOs over Romania”, if we make an appropriate approach, we will discover that the most important distances between cosmic civilisations are not those in space but those in time.

I have estimated that in the history of our Galaxy could have come into being a number of technological civilisations, of which, maybe a few hundred survived the childhood diseases (that we face now on Earth) and still exist. But these civilisations have not arisen simultaneously. For example, in July 2015 it was announced the discovery at 1,400 light years from Earth, of the exoplanet Kepler 452b. It is similar to Earth, orbiting in the habitable zone of a Sun-like star. That solar system is one billion years older than ours. That means that life and a possible technological civilisation could have appeared here one billion years earlier than on Earth. More generally, the first technological civilisations in the Milky Way could appear a billion years ago, or even earlier. Consequently, we understand that the possible civilisations in the Cosmos are far apart from each other not only in space, but also in time. In our Galaxy, these several hundred surviving civilisations, estimated above, have appeared, most likely, one in a several million years. Therefore, in the Milky Way there is no civilisation close to our level.

What will become of our civilisation (if it will survive) over millions (or billions) of years? It is impossible to imagine. We do not forget that we are not able to predict our future, even in a perspective of just several hundred years. How would the inhabitants of a civilisation that has outstripped us with millions of years look like? Maybe they became immortal, maybe time and space do not matter to them, they may have moved into a pervasive virtual reality, in other dimensions and so on. But the real answer is almost certainly even much more complex and defies our logic and imagination. We can accept however that they have been transformed into something else, beyond our understanding; into something we can name as a “hypercivilization”.

If somebody considers that we were too optimistic and the intelligent beings are much scarcer, we should add that our Milky Way is only one of at least 150 billion, more or less similar, galaxies of the Universe accessible to our instruments. And we have strong reasons to believe that there are other Universes too, maybe “parallel” ones, maybe from other states of matter, or parts of a “Multiverse” etc.

Schooling and science fiction, but not only, set our minds on patterns ignoring completely the possibility of hypercivilisations. Consequently, we face two “extraterrestrial hypotheses”: the first is what we might call the “primitive extraterrestrial hypothesis”, the other that of hypercivilisations.

The “Primitive Extraterrestrial Hypothesis” assumes that all cosmic civilisations are more or less at the same level of evolution. Therefore it nurtures some false preconceptions as: very long and difficult cosmic voyages, wish to land on the lawn of White House, equal rights, conversation, invasion, intervention, aid and so on.

Exoplanets NASA ftr

This primitive view is completely implausible. If hypercivilisations exist (and they exist, with a probability of 99.999999%) they exploited, in the smallest detail, our Galaxy, millions of years ago, so they have known, for a long time, about our existence. This reasoning led Enrico Fermi, when he said, in 1950: “they should be here; where are they?” But neither he, nor many others, did consider that representatives of hypercivilisations could be here, among us, but could look so different from our expectations that we cannot recognise them. What prevents us to see them is, also, a set of widespread and deeply rooted prejudices, such as those below.

The preconception of equal rights. A difference of millions of years, or even hundreds of millions, is as huge as between us and a lizard or even an ant. If they are here (as it is highly probable), they can examine us, monitor our evolution, even contact us in some form, but they will never put them at the same level with us.

The preconception of conversation. As far back as 1959, Giuseppe Cocconi and Philip Morrison argued that if the difference between two civilisations is of millions of years, the probability that they could exchange ideas is zero. We interact sometimes with a lizard; but this will never be a conversation, they said.

The temporal provincialism (term used by Dr J. Allen Hynek). It states that, in opposition with the previous dark centuries, the last three-four hundred years brought us finally to the light of real truth and science. In this light, now we can decide what facts can be accepted and what will never be possible. If one hundred years ago or so we started to use the radio, some believe it will last as the best means of communications forever. If one hundred years ago Einstein postulated that the speed of light is a limit, no other physical law will be discovered until the end of times to avoid this limit and so on. As a peculiar example, we have the SETI preconception. According to it, even if the radio signals need thousands of years from one inhabited world to other, the cosmic civilisations will consider that signalling by radio waves will be, forever, the most appropriate means of contact and that we should spend money to search for them.

NASA-Antenas-SETI-ftr

The preconception of invasion. For many people it should be normal if a cosmic civilisation arrives on Earth, it will attempt to conquer us by force. But the hypercivilisations probably knew, millions of years ago, that we are here; therefore they could invade us at any time and, in a certain sense, probably we are already invaded by them, for millions of years. Some “out-of-place artifacts” could be a hint of that.

The preconception of intervention and of aid. Some hope that the ET will help us (or at least some “chosen”) to overcome future catastrophes. But even us, if we discover a valuable piece of land, which has escaped from the human intrusion, we try to declare it a reservation, permitting only a very limited intervention, for scientific reasons. This attitude seems to be strengthening in time. A hypercivilisation observing the Earth and the human technological civilisation should act in a similar manner, avoiding to interfere in our evolution, but taking samples, making some experiments, having very limited contacts (not at all officially or as between equals) with only some individuals, selected upon their and not our criteria.

Therefore no settlement, no destruction, on one hand and no official contact, conversation or substantial help, on the other hand, are to be expected from highly advanced cosmic civilisations, even if they are here now.

The difference between a hypercivilisation and us could be as high as that between us and ants. Some entomologists who would propose to study the life of an anthill will try to disturb, as little as possible, its life. They could of course make experiments, examining or modifying some ants, or even taking them in remote laboratories, trying to create new “races” and so on. They will certainly try to find out, as much as possible, about the life of the anthill, but will not “present credentials” to the queen of the ants. If the entomologists have the technology, they will create some robot ants, sending them in to the hill and watching from a safe place, for example “on the computer screen”, the data transmitted by them. And if a robot ant would be lost in that mission, the incident would add a bit to the costs of research, without being a tragedy.

We can speculate that a hypercivilisation could attempt to realise, using genetic materials from the Earth, new races, with greater brain, with higher intelligence, adapted for some special tasks, etc. Therefore, many “races” described by the alleged abductees (the greys, the tall blonds etc.) can be such artificial human races or even bio-robots derived from the human species. They can be “produced” for example in reservations or bases somewhere outside the Earth. In the same manner we make new varieties of wheat from the traditional ones. Sometimes, the perfect variety of wheat became sterile or exposed to new diseases. At that moment the agronomists will try to find some appropriate genes in the pool represented by the primitive species of wheat, to improve the “perfect” variety. What if humans on Earth are the “wild pool” of genes, suitable to improve some artificial races elsewhere? In this case it will be no problem of compatibility between the visitors and us, as in some of the reported UFO abduction and hybridisation stories, but also, for example, in the biblical note: “In those days, divine beings and human daughters had sexual relations and gave birth to children. These were the ancient heroes” (Genesis, 6, 4). Some people suppose even that there is an ongoing external intervention in the evolution of the human race in order to improve it.

But obviously the comparison above – of mankind with an anthill – is slightly forced, as mankind is, nevertheless, a potential future hypercivilisation. The arising of a technological civilisation could be a very rare event in our Galaxy, occurring probably once in several millions of years. So it is normal for us to be of interest to the higher intelligences. But what could they expect from us?

A hypercivilisation will behave elusively and will not give us its knowledge and technologies; even more, it will forbid that. This is not, only, because of human aggressiveness and xenophobia, making from all new technology new weapons, nor only to avoid a “cultural shock”, which could virtually destroy all our social, economical, political, military, scientific, religious and cultural structures. I can speculate they have also some other reasons for that. Hypercivilisations could wait (and maybe harvest even now) our original ideas, viewpoints, creations (in art, science, philosophy, ethics etc.), produced as a result of millions of years of our independent evolution. And all that expected crop could be destroyed by a premature contact.

Some old, apparently absurd, stories may be an indication of such an attitude: the punishment for the apple of the forbidden tree of knowledge, the chaining of Prometheus, or the fallen angels (from Book of Enoch), thrown into a pit full of fire, because they were taught earthlings some skills.

Many abductees or contactees spoke about ethereal light balls as “deposits of knowledge and intelligence”, recording “everything in the Universe”, among others, the life of all (or of the most interesting) individuals. We have some hints for this when we speak about: the “Book of Life”, “Akashic Records”, “collective unconscious”, or even “morphogenetic field” etc. That “super-memory” could be written on a “spiritual” support, or on something around us we are not yet able to imagine. Sometimes, some people, under certain conditions, could gain access to this data warehouse. In that way we can explain: channelling, “xenoglossia”, “walk-ins”, “reincarnation”, ghosts, etc. In such a virtual reality, time is different. We can travel in the past, live events, without changing the real past, or we can see scenarios of the future (sometimes apocalyptical), without accepting fatality.

Of course, all the above is not a proof that the hypercivilisations are the explanation for everything strange and particularly for UFOs. It is only one hypothesis; but – I think – one which cannot be easily discarded.

The reporting witness was in a vehicle moving along Corunna Road when he had the feeling he was being watched on June 8, 2017.

“As we broke the tree line, I noticed three lights in the sky from this distance I was at,” the witness stated. “It looked to be no more than 70-80 feet between the three lights. As we drove by, my mother stopped the vehicle to gain a better view. I began feeling mortified and terror consumed me. The craft hovered ominously, making no sound, pulsating a flurry of colors.”

The witness yelled for his mother to begin driving again as he did not feel safe.

“As we drove, another five minutes or less had passed, and I began feeling I was being watched again. This time, another craft had appeared over the tree line shinning blue-green very intensely. It then changed shape as it got closer, still making no sound. I began feeling the dread again.”

They slowed down to get a better view of the craft.

“As it hovered, it stayed in position as we drove past. As with the previous craft, another five minutes or less had passed, then off in the same direction a small, white light from the horizon had grown from a dim white light to a star-sized object with red and blue and green and white flashing lights while still making no sound. We were the only ones on the road, so there was no background noise or disturbance. The two previous craft were a football field’s length away from us as we saw them no more than 50 to 100 feet above the ground hovering over trees.”

NASA HAS CAPTURED THE SHADOW OF A MYSTERIOUS KUIPER BELT OBJECT

NASA HAS CAPTURED THE SHADOW OF A MYSTERIOUS KUIPER BELT OBJECT

700_6861a49ef2e704924a673293123175cb.jpg?v=1500735520

NASA has finally gotten a peek of an ancient and elusive Kuiper belt object. NASA has found a concerning object that a New Horizons spacecraft will likely visit next.

Reports say at least 24 mobile telescopes placed in the remote regions of Chubut and Santa Cruz, Argentina helped to capture the 200 milliseconds of the Kuiper Belt object that passed in front of a distant and unnamed star. This brief encounter showed the Kuiper Belt obfuscating its light, in the wake of July 17.

Scientists have been waiting for this brief moment for months, and some don't know exactly what they could have gotten from such a short glimpse of information. This was the third attempt at "occultation," blocking the light from stars that were nearby as it captured the shadow of an object moving in front of a background star.

Scientists at NASA believe that this can reveal important information about the objects shape, size, orbit and surrounding environment. Scientists say this will be crucial for the planning of the upcoming flyby mission.

2014 MU69 - THE MYSTERY OBJECT IN THE KUIPER BELT

It is known as 2014 MU69, after the year in which the object was first discovered. The Kuiper Belt object lies in our solar system, more than four billion miles away. The objects distance and faint brightness made it hard for scientists to figure out what this all meant. The object at the time remained a mystery.

However, scientists were able to learn that the object is known as a cold classical object. While avoiding external disturbances and collisions, scientists expect the object to reveal insights about the formation of the solar system. Monday became the third and most successful out of the three occultation campaigns. It helped contribute to answering some of the questions the scientists have had ahead of the New Horizons spacecraft flyby which is scheduled for January 1, 2019.

"It was the most historic occultation on the face of the earth," said Jim Green, NASA's director of planetary science in a congratulatory call to the team, as the space agency reported in a statement. "You pulled it off, and you made it happen." NASA scientists also received support from the local community, including Argentinian scientists, government officials and of course citizens.

A major highway was closed off for two hours to try and avoid disturbance from car headlights. Street lights were turned off, and telescopes that were placed in people's backyards and trucks were parked perfectly to help serve as wind breaks. Marc Buie of the Southwest Research Institution led the 60-people team of observers, who will reportedly study data that was obtained during the occultations to plan the upcoming flyby.

The New Horizons spacecraft has already completed a very successful flyby mission to Pluto in 2015. Located a billion miles farther from our sun Pluto, 2014 MU69 is predicted to be the farthest object ever encountered by any spacecraft. "Spacecraft flybys are unforgiving." Alan Stern said in May ahead of the occultations, "The occultations help us plan for a unique flyby of a scientifically important relic of the solar system's era of formation.

VALERIAN - EXTRATERRESTRIAL SPECTACLE INVADES MOVIE THEATERS ACROSS THE U.S.

VALERIAN - EXTRATERRESTRIAL SPECTACLE INVADES MOVIE THEATERS ACROSS THE U.S.

700_cd6799690c17998f5b47824e1741579f.jpg?v=1500744321

The new science fiction film epic "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" is based on the TV series and comic both put out in France. To look at the trailer for this film which is now streaming online, this looks like amazing scenes of beauty and great special effects.

VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS MOVIE REVIEW

There is a great scene of diverting a beast in a vast dessert, and a city underwater just to name a few of the special effects used here. In short, Valerian has the honor of being the most expensive independently made film ever produced.

Sounds great doesn't it, the trailer certainly looks great. There is just one issue at a closer glance could Valerian be yet another in a string of films that were more about visual effects and captivating an audience with them than an actual story that also grabs in viewers.

Alright, so what is the basis for the story in the movie "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets"? It is on a planet known as Mui where apparently a race of alien beings with shimmering skin live. Life on Muli seems quite content, these aliens live in harmony and have their types of pets. Little creatures are known as Mul converters that somewhat resemble cute little goblins. These creatures aren't just essential as companionship but as survival, turns out they secrete something that closely resembles a pearl that this species of aliens depends on to survive. So disaster hits when another alien race attacks the planet and destroys it with only a certain amount of the citizens of Mul managing to escape. There is just one problem; they were unable to save any of the creatures needed for their survival.

This is where the main protagonist of the film Major Valerian comes in at, he along with Sgt Laureline is assigned to find the last known surviving Mul converter that goes by the name of Melo. The two leave in a ship that looks a whole lot like the Millennium Falcon from the Star Wars films. But this isn't Star Wars that had the great epic good versus evil story. No, this is guy and girl humanoid alien species go off to find little creature movie. Most of the film is now devoted to these two on the quest of finding the creature. Of course along the way they take the time to fall in love and obsess more about finding the creature. But as perhaps the film makers intended the viewers are too wrapped up noticing the amazing visual CGI effects that they aren't bothering to notice the plot isn't that good.

So, instead of saying the next Star Wars or the next even Star Trek film, Valerian falls more into say the category of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Yes, the latter is remembered quite fondly in pop culture, but take away the amazing visual effects even for that time along with the great musical score and explain the plot? For some of us that require Wikipedia to do so, which isn't a good thing. So, Valerian is perhaps another one of these films visually gorgeous, but if you take all that away, you are left with a plot that maybe isn't much to talk about other than a generic love story or lost pet film.

ASTRONOMERS: 'WE WERE WRONG! 100 BILLION HABITABLE EARTH-LIKE PLANETS IN THE MILKY WAY ALONE'

ASTRONOMERS: 'WE WERE WRONG! 100 BILLION HABITABLE EARTH-LIKE PLANETS IN THE MILKY WAY ALONE'

700_1996b8fd6eda0b41613ec07a74f30b19.jpg?v=1500743243

New Zealand astronomers have used new scientific techniques to revise the number of possible Earth-like planets in our galaxy. The University of Auckland now provides an estimate of around 100 billion possibly habitable planets.

ASTRONOMERS ESTIMATE 100 BILLION HABITABLE EARTH-LIKE PLANETS IN THE MILKY WAY, 50 SEXTILLION IN THE UNIVERSE

The previous hypothesis was closer to 17 billion, a substantial difference. Using this new data and considering the nearly 500 billion galaxies in the universe leads to a staggering possibility- something like 50 sextillion planets that could contain life as we know it.

The process employed to estimate the new numbers is called gravitational microlensing. It is currently being used at Mt. John Observatory by a team of New Zealand, and Japanese scientists called MOA. Gravitational microlensing’s ability to detect objects under extremely low or no light conditions makes it a more exact tool when compared to apparent magnitude, the previously used technique.

RELATED ARTICLES

Apparent magnitude involved measuring the dimming of stars as planets pass between them and the earth. Though used by such institutions as the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and the Kepler Space Observatory, apparent magnitude had some major disadvantages.

GRAVITATIONAL MICROLENSING UNLOCKS THE SECRET OF ALIEN LIFE

“Kepler finds Earth-sized planets that are quite close to parent stars, ” said Dr. Phil Yock, a representative of the university’s physics department. “These planets are hotter than Earth.” Scientists have long been skeptical of the possibility of life on such planets that fall too close to their suns. The circumstellar habitable zone often called the Goldilocks zone, is considered a more likely place for extraterrestrial life as it contains the not too hot, not too cold conditions to support liquid water.

l1TZFy.jpg

In contrast, gravitational microlensing considers not the dimming of stars but the distortions of quasars, caused by the gravities of objects that move in front of them. Quasars emit electromagnetic radiation and are observable by radio, infrared, telescope, ultraviolet, and x-ray. When an object of sufficient gravity passes between a quasar and the earth, the warping of that object's gravity causes a magnification of the quasar’s radiation.

Dr. Yock wants to combine this new data with that previously investigated by apparent magnitude. “Our proposal is to measure the number of Earth-mass planets orbiting stars at distances typically twice the Sun-Earth distance. Our planets will, therefore, be cooler than the Earth. By interpolating. We should get a good estimate of the number of Earth-like, habitable planets in the galaxy.”

New Zealand’s extreme southern position gives it a unique view of the sky while its relatively low population, abundance of rural land and low levels of light pollution make it an excellent place for astral observation. It is one of only three countries to have an official Gold Rated International Dark Sky Reserve. It is considered one of the best stargazing locations on earth.

NASA HAS ACCIDENTALLY FILMED THE MOST AMAZING UFO VIDEO EVER

NASA HAS ACCIDENTALLY FILMED THE MOST AMAZING UFO VIDEO EVER

700_832d86d3a05e2b4973c329471ee9d6c4.jpg?v=1500742713

Oh NASA!

Thanks to the onboard cameras at the International Space Station, UFO hunters have--apparently--spotted hundreds of unidentified flying objects near the space station, and even entering and leaving our planet.

NASA rarely comments on the alleged videos which have become more and more popular in recent years.

There are things out there that no one can explain. One such example is the video we share here.

UFO hunters spotted an unidentified flying object captured on video by NASA’s space cameras.

In the 'otherworldly' video footage, a strange object–with a peculiar disk-shaped design—seems to be leaving Earth’s atmosphere. So what was it? Is it an actual Alien vehicle? Is it just Space Debris? Perhaps an optical Illusion, or just the good ol' Swamp Gas?

Many users are convinced that this video is the ultimate evidence Earth is visited by Alien beings while others remain skeptical and still, unconvinced, saying that it's just a reflection or ice particles near the ISS floating away. But, come on guys, surely Ice Particles don't float off like that, do they?

And while we debate whether or not this is an actual alien vehicle spotted by NASA cameras, many scientists, former Astronauts, and military officials are convinced, even without seeing this video, that our planet has been visited by beings not from Earth for centuries.

This is just one example:

“Intelligent beings from other star systems have been and are visiting our planet Earth. They are variously referred to as Visitors, Others, Star People, Et’s, etc…They are visiting Earth now; this is not a matter of conjecture or wistful thinking.”

–Theodor C. Loder III, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Earth Sciences, University of New Hampshire.

Mesmerizing Sky - Rare Double Sunset over North Carolina

Mesmerizing Sky - Rare Double Sunset over North Carolina

A double sunset is a rare astro-geographical phenomenon, in which the sun sets twice on the same evening from a specific place.

double%2Bsunset%2Bsky%2Bphenomenon.jpg

The first published mention of a double sunset which occurred in Leek was made in 1686 by Dr Robert Plot in his book The Natural History of Stafford-shire.

The spectacle was last reliably witnessed, and filmed, from the churchyard belonging to the parish church of St Edward the Confessor in 1977.

Historically, it appears that a double sunset is very rare, so we may wonder what is going on because people around the world are currently witnessing double sunsets.

That the phenomenon is not an illusion proves the last double sunset which was spotted from North Carolina as Brian witnessed a bright East and West horizons after sunset on July 15, 2017 as you can see the below video.

“I can’t really give you a definitive answer (on what it was).”

“At that time of the morning the light often makes things look different than they are,” he said.

The suspicious sighting comes after another man photographed a similar-looking, strange light hovering above a morning sunrise in 2014.

Don Jeffery’s photo was also taken from Dee Why and, wouldn’t you know it, it also occurred on a Wednesday.

Another added: “What?! Spotted this weirdness near St Austell today #ufocornwall”.

Photographer Shayne House also spotted the mysterious entity, this time over the A30.

He asked: “What the?! Is this an alien spacecraft over the A30?”

Another Instagram user from Kent, who posted footage over Roche Rock, St Austell, said: "What on Earth is this in the sky? It looks like some kind of craft to me, has anyone else seen this?”

UFO cube that appeared 'through portal' over US nuclear test base was REAL, claims expert

UFO cube that appeared 'through portal' over US nuclear test base was REAL, claims expert

EXCLUSIVE: This is genuine footage of a bizarre "cube-shaped" object "appearing through a portal" near one of the most secretive military bases in the US, according to an under-fire UFO hunter who has now admitted HOAX images have appeared in some of his videos.

Tyler Glockner, the man behind YouTube's most popular UFO and alien-related channel Secureteam10, has also admitted to Express.co.uk he once disguised his own voice to appear as that of an alleged source in one of his videos.

Yet, Mr Glockner today stood by his outlandish "cube" video and a follow-up that claimed the event actually happened, saying it was all "real".

The video entitled '[MIND-BOGGLING] Black Portal & Alien Cube UFO Over Texas' has been branded poorly made, photoshopped and fake by a series of UFO debunkers, some of who have placed Mr Glockner on UFO website and YouTube channel blacklists for his alleged crimes against ufology.

The video first emerged in June 2015 and claimed a "terrifying black cube was snapped over El Paso on the Texas border" just a few miles from White Sands – the infamous US military testing site where the world’s first Atomic bomb was detonated.

It has been viewed more than a staggering 3.6 million times.

UFO-Cube

SECURETEAM10*YouTube

This 'UFO cube' was faked, claim debunkers, but Tyler Glockner insists it was real.

The clip was looked at by the US-based Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), which is the world's largest organisation dedicated to UFO and alien research.

Fletcher Gray, lead MUFON investigator in Texas, said at the time: "If you blow the thing up, you can see too many pixels."

Various debunkers claim some YouTube channels such as Secureteam10 use outrageous claims and footage to attract maximum views and benefit from advertising revenue from YouTube.

Debunking website UFO Theatre estimated in April that Secureteam10 could pull in as much as £230,000 a year from advertising, but he was at risk of losing it die to changes in YouTube policy.

Mr Glockner, who today had nearly one million (958,228) subscribers to his channel, maintains he is just a genuine UFO researcher trying to "get the truth out there."

Tyler-Glockner

Secureteam10*YouTube

Tyler Glockner has an army of UFO buff followers on YouTube.

But aside from the shocking cube claim, his videos have included ridiculous allegations including:

*That video of a Hayabusa capsule re-entry from 2010 was recent "leaked" footage of an “alien satellite shot down by the Illuminati”.

*There are towers built on the moon

*That time lapse video of a helicopter was alien technology being tested over France

*Humans have lived on Mars for many years and Google's April Fool's day images of a space station on the Red Planet may actually be real

RELATED ARTICLES

A new attack comes from YouTube's TheOutThereChannel which has a video exposing how Mr Glockner apparently distorted his own voice to give the impression he had spoken to an alleged NASA and NSA source Dr Eric Norton.

In the Secureteam10 video entitled 'Nasa whistleblower reveals about L-shaped ships on the far side of the moon', 'Dr Norton' discussed the craft being on the lunar surface.

TheOutThereChannel used software to strip back Dr Norton's voice, to reveal it was in fact Mr Glockner's.

In an earlier attack by YouTube channel Dazzathecameraman, the debunker analysed an outlandish claim made in a Secureteam10 video entitled 'Leaked? Giant body behind Saturn Entering Solar System - cover up'.

The video made the far-fetched claim that a massive unknown planet had been filmed entering our solar system behind the ringed planet, but it was being withheld from the public.

Have hoaxes made their way onto my channel in the past? Sure, but that's the game. I've sharpened my eye a lot since then, and I know what to look for.

Tyler Glockner

The video played what it said was a recording of a source - an astronomer from the W M Keck Observatory on Maunakea in Hawaii, called only Ken, who supposedly work led for a government agency.

He spoke over an alleged genuine image showing a large plant behind what appeared to be Saturn.

Express.co.uk had an exclusive Twitter exchange with Mr Glockner, after putting these claims to him.

He denied being responsible for hoaxing any material himself, but accepted he may have inadvertently shown other people's hoaxes in the past.

He said: "I don't 'hoax' anything.

"Have hoaxes made their way onto my channel in the past? Sure, but that's the game.

"I've sharpened my eye a lot since then, and I know what to look for."

After being met with claims the original cube video was digitally created, he posted a follow up with an unidentified female witness to the event.

He added: "I'm extremely careful, and the Texas cube was most certainly real, as was the interview I did with the woman who witnessed it."

He then turned to the claims that his own voice has been digitised to sound like sources speaking off camera in his videos.

He said: "I admitted in the VERY video that I recreated the voice audio for Ken, who WAS a real person, but didn't want their voice out there.

"I admitted this in the description of that video the day I posted it, so I find it hilarious that all of these haters have left that little detail out of their stories."

Whereas some UFO YouTubers who have come under fire have claimed it was CIA trolls out top discredit their work, Mr Glockner claimed jealousy from rivals was responsible.

He said: "I run the biggest channel in ufology with nothing but love from millions of fans.

"Everyone has a few haters, and that's fine. I pay no attention.

"I run this channel and I do my best to filter out the nonsense.

"Trolls constantly attack me as being a 'hoaxer', and yet anyone can go through the videos I post on day to day and see that's completely UNTRUE."

He said other YouTube channels that used "blatant CGI fakes" were getting less flack, adding: "I'm getting attacked for something that I posted back when I very first started the channel, and that wasn't even a hoax?

"Like I said, these guys just want to hate on the big guy, and that's me.

"My work stands for itself, and one or two crappy videos out of hundreds does not define me or the hard work I've done for this research. End of story."

Scott Brando runs debunking website ufoofinterest.org.

He told Express.co.uk: "We know that the UFO cube was a fake, not CGI but a bad image photoshopped.

"We don't know who was the witness who sent the picture to Secureteam10."

He said he was convinced the witness was also hoaxed after "it emerged the original image had been digitally created."

He added that Mr Glockner's admission about creating witness voices with his own, mean he could not be trusted with "what he said about sources."

SETI Astronomer says We’re Ready for Alien Contact… Thanks to Hollywood

SETI Astronomer says We’re Ready for Alien Contact… Thanks to Hollywood

Seth Shostak is best known for his work as Senior Astronomer at the SETI Institute, but he also works in the movie biz, offering scientific advice to Hollywood filmmakers. While writing my book, Silver Screen Saucers, I interviewed Seth about his activities in Tinseltown and about the role movies play in shaping our perceptions of potential alien life.

Seth told me:

“I think we are ready for ET contact in some sense, because the public has been conditioned to the idea of life in space by movies and TV… I think that Hollywood is by far the biggest term in the equation of the public’s reaction to confirmation of alien life.”

My conversation with Seth was fascinating, but ultimately was never included in my book. I’d significantly overshot my planned deadline for submission and I had insufficient time to weave this material into the established structure of the then near-finished manuscript. Still, I’m loath to let a good interview go to waste. So, here it is, in full…

Contact (1997). Shostak was a scientific consultant on the movie.

RG: You’ve advised on a number of Hollywood movies over the years, including Contact, the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still, Green Lantern, and Battleship, among others. What’s the general nature of your involvement in these productions?

SS: The producers will call up and they ask me questions or they’ll fly me down to LA and I talk to the director and the writer and things like that. It’s a great deal of fun for me and I hope that it helps. Usually the filmmakers are in problem-solving mode. They already have an idea of what their scenario’s going to be; you’re not going to change that. But sometimes they have a specific problem, like ‘we need some realistic way for the aliens to communicate with us’—something very specific and descript, and they need some scientifically plausible mechanism for that. That’s usually the nature of their enquires. And you can understand that—they’re in the storytelling business; they’re not in the science education business, so if I can help them with that, that’s fine. What I would like to happen, but doesn’t, is for me to get to these people early enough that they incorporate some of the interesting things that are happening in science, rather than just taking the usual scenarios with a variant and them asking you to fix some scripting problems for them.

RG: What was the nature of your advice on Contact?

SS: Several of us at the SETI Institute here were advisors to the film. I was called up almost every day for a while—mostly by the art department at Warner Bros. because they wanted to get the sets right, so I took pictures of things for them, and so forth. But they would also call up and ask, “what does it look like when you fly through a wormhole?” Well, it’s not as if I do that regularly, but I kinda described to them what it would look like if you got close to the speed of light, where the whole universe collapses to a bright point in front of you and behind you. But, again, it was mostly technical details. The premise is that, if you get the science right, the film is somehow more valuable to getting kids interested in science. But I don’t know that it’s such a good premise; I don’t think it matters much. I don’t think kids will ever walk out of a movie theatre and say “well that’s it, mom, I’m not studying chemistry anymore because they got that wrong.” I don’t think that ever happens.

The remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008), on which Shostak worked as a consultant.

RG: What did you contribute to the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still?

SS: I was actually much more involved with that film. They flew me up to Vancouver to be on set when they were shooting a scene. That scene when Jennifer Connelly takes the alien, Keanu Reeves, to the home of this physicist, played by John Cleese, and there are all of these equations on the blackboard and the alien finishes one of the equations. Well, to begin with, I was really looking forward to meeting John Cleese, being a huge Monty Python fan, so that was fun for me. And Jennifer Connelly was… very nice. She called me several times here at the Institute, trying to get the jargon and so forth. But the director, Scott Derrikson, he needed those equations and I went through three iterations with him, so those equations on the film are in my handwriting. I was a little concerned actually when Keanu was writing one of the equations; I had written it, but then they traced what I wrote in pencil and then erased the chalk, so Keanu could see the pencil but the camera could not. And so during this sequence he has to trace the pencil with the chalk, and that means he’s writing these Greek letters very, very slowly. So, I said to the director: “No scientist would write them so slowly,” to which he replied “Seth, he’s an alien, of course he writes Greek letters slowly!” I also redlined the script and said “look, scientists don’t talk like this” and I would write suggested dialogue, about a third of which they accepted. But the other two thirds they didn’t take. But there was this whole sequence where someone says something like: “Professor Fudnick! There’s a bolide on a hyperbolic trajectory entering the solar system at three times ten to the seventh meters per second!” And I scratched all that out and replaced it with: “Bob, there’s a goddamn rock headed our way,” because that’s what they would say! But they decided to use their original dialogue instead.

RG: What do you consider to be the most scientifically accurate depiction of alien contact ever in film and television?

SS: Contact. Because, yes, that movie benefited from all the consultancy, but what it really benefited from was the fact that Carl Sagan wrote the book, and Sagan knew about SETI, so that was all going to be right. The middle of the story where she goes off on this big carnival ride to see the aliens, obviously that’s all fiction and maybe not so accurate, but nobody knows. But the depiction of how SETI works and so forth, that was very accurate. In fact, there a lot of in-jokes in the film. So, when they find a signal somebody says “Thank you, Elmer!” I’m sure there weren’t many people in the theatre who understood what that was about, but it was a reference to our Follow-Up Detection Device that we use to verify a signal—the FUDD. So that was a reference to Elmer Fudd. But in any case, that was all accurate.

RG: Were you pleased with the movie?

SS: Yeah. The first time I saw it I thought “God, there’s three endings to this film and it’s soft in the middle.” That was my first reaction. But of course I had to see the film many times, and the second time I saw it I thought, “yeah, this is a pretty good film,” and by the third time I thought “Y’ know, this is really a good film.” So, I have to say thumbs-up to that film.

RG: Did the success of Contact help SETI as an organization?

SS: I don’t know that it brought in additional monies, but it certainly simplifies my task during public lectures. The first thing I’ll ask is, “How many of you have seen Contact?” And if it’s a fair fraction of the audience, that shortens my exposition for how SETI works, because then they know. But in terms of getting people interested in this subject, the thing that movies can do is not educate people about the science, but it can get them emotionally involved, so that they see that this is exciting. It doesn’t have to be 100% scientifically accurate; it just has to be interesting.

Green Lantern (2011): another of Shostak’s consultancy credits.

RG: Do you think it’s fair to say that entertainment media is the dominant force in shaping popular expectations of life in the universe, and of first contact scenarios?

SS: Yes, I do. I really do. But I think we are ready for ET contact in some sense, because the public has been conditioned to the idea of life in space by movies and TV. And if you go into a classroom with a bunch of 11 year olds and ask them “how many of you kids think there are aliens out there?” they all raise their hands! Why? Is it because their parents have been educating them about astrobiology? No. It’s because they’ve seen them on TV! Now unfortunately these products may give the kids the impression the aliens are going to come here and flatten LA or something like that because the aliens often are hostile in these depictions. But anyway, they have this preconceived notion that we share the universe with lots of company, and, doggarn it, if we were to find it then we’re just proving something they already thought was true. So, yes, I think that Hollywood is by far the biggest term in the equation of the public’s reaction to confirmation of alien life.

RG: Is Hollywood’s influence in this regard beneficial or problematic?

SS: I don’t think it’s problematic. I think it’s okay. I think it’s a good thing, because, think about it, why do the American taxpayers spend a couple of buck a year to support NASA? Is it because they’re interested in the hydrology on Titan, or something like that? No. They’re interested in life in space, and that’s because of movies and TV. In that sense, William Shatner did more for NASA than NASA does for NASA. It’s a fact. People are interested in this because of the emotional appeal, the romance.

RG: If and when humanity makes contact with an extraterrestrial civilization, would the cinemagoing public be able to divorce Hollywood’s alien depictions from the alien reality with which we’re presented?

SS: I think that in the beginning people will imagine things that they’ve seen in the movies. They will probably imagine it in terms that they’re already familiar with, and they’ve been exposed to alien movies for a very long time.

Shostak also advised on Battleship (2012).

RG: Films depicting benevolent extraterrestrials—Close Encounters, E.T., Avatar, for example—have enjoyed enormous success at the international box office. Despite this, Hollywood prefers to explore the negative impact of alien contact. Why is this so? And would you like to see Hollywood produce more ‘friendly alien’ movies?

SS: Sure. It would be nice to have some more thoughtful films, because you might think about them, that’s all. It’s going to cost you the same to go see them; the popcorn’s stilling going to be outrageously expensive, and you’re still just going for the entertainment. I’m not going to the movies to learn something about extraterrestrial life, right? And, to be honest, I like the action films, too. They’re okay by me. But clearly when you look at films which have become classics, very frequently they have a message that goes beyond ‘here’s a bad guy and we’re going to have to vanquish them.’ Thoughtful films tend to have more endurance. But, hey, we’re not talking about Oxford University here, we’re talking about the motion picture industry and it’s a business, and so whatever succeeds at the box-office is what they’re going to make. Personally I don’t have much of problem with that. I used to have a problem with them getting the science wrong, but I’ve come around to realize that maybe that doesn’t matter. When I was a grad student I wrote Gene Rodenberry a letter and I said I’ll come over and redline your Star Trek scripts for you, and he replied saying he’d already got an organization [RAND] that’s doing that for us. Well, they didn’t do a very good job, I gotta tell you!

Astronomers Find Strange Radio Signal Only 11 Light Years Away

Astronomers Find Strange Radio Signal Only 11 Light Years Away

The search for alien life in space has once again turned to mysterious radio signals from distant stars. For years, so-called fast radio bursts (FRBs) have puzzled astronomers for years, with theories ranging from attempts at intergalactic communication or even that they might be powering some form of extraterrestrial spacecraft. While scores of these radio bursts have been recorded and their sources located, scientists still aren’t any closer to determining what (if anything) they might be signaling. Just this week, the search for radio communications in space got a huge boost thanks to the discovery of a new radio signal coming from right next door – cosmically speaking, that is.

Anomalous radio signals might not be as sexy as flying saucers, but they're a start.

Anomalous radio signals might not be as sexy as flying saucers, but they’re a start.

On May 12th, astronomers at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico made famous in the Goldeneye James Bond film detected an odd radio signal coming from Ross 128, a red dwarf star located just eleven light years away in the Virgo constellation. The signal lasted for around ten minutes and was in a frequency band not typically heard in known natural phenomena.

Abel Mendez, director of the Planetary Habitability Laboratory (PHL) at the University of Puerto Rico, issued a press releasedescribing the find and the three main theories his laboratory has put forth:

We believe that the signals are not local radio frequency interferences (RFI) since they are unique to Ross 128, and observations of other stars immediately before and after did not show anything similar. We do not know the origin of these signals but there are three main possible explanations: they could be (1) emissions from Ross 128 similar to Type II solar flares, (2) emissions from another object in the field of view of Ross 128, or just (3) burst from a high orbit satellite since low orbit satellites are quick to move out of the field of view.

Mendez is quick to note, however, that each of these theories has its holes. Solar flares typically emit frequencies quite different from the ones observed, and satellites aren’t known to emit radio bursts like the one recorded at Aricebo. While many outlets have been quick to jump on this radio signal as proof of an alien civilization, PHL scientists note that “the recurrent aliens hypothesis is at the bottom of many other better explanations.” Bummer. Always is, though, isn’t it?

Now that China has constructed the world's largest radio telescope, it's likely that strange radio signals like these will receive more scientific scrutiny.

Now that China has constructed the world’s largest radio telescope, it’s likely that strange radio signals like the ones found at Arecibo will receive more scientific attention.

Still, any discovery of radio signals are a step in the right direction, even if they end up being prosaic in origin. Learning how to discern naturally-occurring signals from what might be unnatural ones is all part of the ongoing narrative of our search for alien life. It’s got to be out there somewhere, right?
