UFO ‘SHOCK proof’? Worrying images emerge of ‘US airforce alien DOGFIGHT’ above Area 51

UFO ‘SHOCK proof’? Worrying images emerge of ‘US airforce alien DOGFIGHT’ above Area 51

UFO HUNTERS have revealed shocking pictures of a “three plane dogfight” above Area 51 that shows a craft that is “too small to fit a person inside” tussling with other aircraft, it has been claimed.

Tim Doyle and Tracey Su revealed the images that show two jets flying above the desert in Lincoln County, Nevada, while a third object looms in the sky.

Mr Doyle said: “Tracy noticed a couple of jet fighters dog fighting, so she popped off a couple pictures.

“It wasn’t until we got back home when we started reviewing the pictures that we noticed a third object.

“What in the world is this? It looks like some kind of triangular unmanned drone. Because it’s definitely too small to have a person inside of it and after reviewing the pictures, it definitely looks as though the three crafts are interacting with each other.

The video explained that Time and Tracy “set up camp 12 miles from Area 51" in a desperate effort to uncover any mysterious secrets the base might have been hiding from the US public.

Mr Doyle added: “We’ll spend the night and seek UFOs and see what else happens.

“Welcome to Area 51, tonight we are UFO hunting in front of the most mysterious and secretive military installation in the entire world and we’ve got all the equipment set up tonight.

"We are taking a look at Orion’s Belt live on the television and that is coming live through our video camera here.

“We have a still camera setup where we are taking still shots repetitively to see if we see any blinking lights, maybe any dark objects, any lights out operations that might be going on.”

Strange Trail in the sky extends entire length of the Earth

Strange Trail in the sky extends entire length of the Earth

Several days ago there was a really bizarre observation on Google Earth and Google Maps.

A baffling line of thousands of miles that extended from the South Pole, Antarctica to the North Pole has not only spotted on Google Earth and Google Maps but may have been spotted from the International Space Station too.

strange%2Btrail%2BEarth.jpg

There is a lot of discussion going on what this huge line could be. The mysterious line seems to be a form of energy or a frequency that the Earth was detected from something big.

Despite some people suggest that it is a processing glitch it clearly has a physical construction.

While the online community still discusses about the strange phenomenon, a video has surfaced of a gigantic bizarre straight line soaring through the sky over the Netherlands.

The witness who submitted the footage to MrMB333 writes:

“Just to share a really strange cloud line in the sky above the Netherlands I’ve spotted on February 20, 2018.”

“Some strange straight lined cloud formation, quite wide and reaching beyond the vanishing point of my eyes.”

“The cloud line seems to be of a different kind of cloud material then the other clouds around and behind it.”

It looks like the 'giant line' on Google earth WAS real after all, the question is; what is the origin of this phenomenon, where does this come from, taking into account the observation of the giant line over the Netherlands that the cloud material seems to be artificially created.

If aliens exist, here’s what they most likely look like

what do aliens look like

If aliens exist, here’s what they most likely look like

Movies, TV shows, and video games have helped humanity paint a mental picture of what aliens might look like if we ever run into them, but most of the time those fictional depictions have little or no scientific backing whatsoever. Researchers searching for extraterrestrial life don’t necessarily know exactly what they’re looking for, but based on what we’ve learned about humanity’s rise there’s a handful of things nature tells us are required for advancement of a civilization. In the book “The Future of Humanity,” author Michio Kaku attempts to answer the incredibly difficult question of what aliens might look like, and this time it’s not just a guess.

Kaku consulted with exobiology experts and theorists who specialize in hypothetical alien life forms which have developed on far-off worlds much different from Earth. Using that accumulated knowledge, Kaku came up with a very basic list of criteria that any intelligence alien race would need to have in order to reach a level similar to humanity.

As the New York Post reports, the requirements that Kaku has dreamt up are essentially the same capabilities that scientists believe have allowed humans to progress in the way that we have:

  1. Stereo vision – Two eyes capable of focusing on a single object are something we typically associate with predators here on Earth. Prey animals often have one eye on either side of their head which allows them to spot threats and escape quickly, but that type of ocular setup is poor when it comes to hunting. Kaku suggests that most if not all “intelligent” alien races would have originated as hunters, rather than the hunted.
  2. Thumbs – Scientists have long believed that evolution which led to opposable thumbs was a huge factor in the rise of primates. A method of grasping objects allows for the making of tools which, it is thought, is one of the very earliest signs of intelligence as we know it. It makes sense that aliens would have followed a similar path.
  3. Language – This one is a bit tricky because it’s incredibly non-specific. The key here isn’t just the ability to communicate with each other in the moment — many animals have species-wide methods of vocal communication that could be considered language — but also to relay information and pass it down between generations. This allows the accumulation of knowledge over long periods of time and gives new members of a species the chance to expand and “stand on the shoulders” of those who came before them.

These features obviously sound a lot like what we’re all born with, which makes perfect sense. However, within this very basic outline there’s plenty of room for variation. If aliens only need two eyes, a gripping appendage, and some kind of language in order to have caught up with humans, there’s really no telling what form their bodies have actually taken, especially on planets with chemical makeup far different from Earth.

Neanderthal Art Dated to 65,000-years-ago in Spain

Neanderthal Art Dated to 65,000-years-ago in Spain

New findings from cave sites in Spain suggest that Neanderthals had nothing to envy in respect to their cognitive skills when contrasted against their close cousins, fully modern humans. It is no longer easy to argue that our direct ancestors had the edge on Neanderthals when it came to displays of mental prowess with the confirmation of extremely ancient Neanderthal cave art.

Archaeological research across Europe has convincingly established that the ancestors of modern Europeans reached the continent around 45,000 years ago, this date not only matched fossils and tools found but also coincided with the earliest examples of cave art. Despite definitive evidence of a lengthy presence for Neanderthals across Europe cave art seemed to appear only after modern humans arrived.

In newly released studies three cave sites, La Pasiega in north-eastern Spain, Maltravieso in western Spain and Ardales in southern Spain, have produced new evidence which pushes back the date for complex art to at least 65,000 years ago. These three sites offer a number of paintings in red or black, incorporating animals, dots and geometric patterns alongside hand stencils, hand prints and engraved iconography.

“Our dating results show that [some of] the cave art at these three sites in Spain is much older than previously thought,” says team member Alistair Pike from the University of Southampton. “With an age in excess of 64,000 years it predates the earliest traces of modern humans in Europe by more than 20,000 years.

The logical conclusion is that Neanderthals are the most likely candidates for having painted the images, and although it remains possible that another sub-species was responsible for the work, such as archaic Homo sapiens, there is no clear evidence for their presence in Europe at the time.

Dirk Hoffmann, a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology was able to date the art only due to the fact that the radioactive element uranium dissolves in water, but the element thorium doesn’t. When water soaks through soils into a cave uranium is carried with it and then gets trapped in mineral deposits, it then radioactively decays at a predictable rate becoming thorium. Measuring the relative amounts of uranium and thorium in minerals can reveal their ages and provide a minimum date for any paintings beneath these deposits.

A drawing of the art shows animals and other symbols around the ladder shape. It’s stiil unclear if they date to the same time or were painted later.

The three Spanish caves with paintings were found to have mineral crusts overlying the images that were at least 64,800 years old, although this is the minimum date for the art we must consider that it could be considerably older. This is without a doubt the oldest directly dates art in Europe and close in age to the oldest examples on the planet.

Results of a second study were announced to the media at the same time, researchers had determined the age of an archaeological cache at Cueva de los Aviones, a coastal cave in southeastern Spain. Among the artefacts examined were perforated sea shells, red and yellow compounds for painting along with shell containers with mixed pigments. The same Uranium-Thorium dating method was applied and revealed an incredibly early date, 115,000 years before present day. Consider that the very oldest signs of such artefacts in Africa are no older than 92,000 years in age, perhaps considerably younger.

“One wrong move, and you might remove some pigments from the wall that were there for thousands and thousands of years,” says Hoffmann, the lead author of both studies. “There’s this overwhelming feeling you get when you first get in.”

With the revelation that both Neanderthals and modern humans had an equal ability to produce rock art, as well as other discoveries showing near equality in tool use, ingenuity, ritual behaviour and genes associated with speech, some researchers are calling into question whether Neanderthals were truly a distinct species. There has long been a divide over whether Neanderthals might not properly be considered a sub-species of Homo sapiens and this new evidence supports the argument that they were an isolated subgroup of our own species. We certainly seemed to have interbred successfully with them which traditionally confirms membership of a single species.

A worker takes measurements of the stone rings inside Bruniquel Cave.

The new studies build on evidence for complex ritual artistic creations among Neanderthals previously highlighted by the discovery of a 176,000-year-old circle created from broken stalagmites deep within the Bruniquel Cave, located in France. Most scientists had already accepted that the Bruniquel Cave stone circles had been composed by local Neanderthal populations.

“According to our new data Neanderthals and modern humans shared symbolic thinking and must have been cognitively indistinguishable”, said Joao Zilhao of the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies in Barcelona, and who was involved in both studies. “On our search for the origins of language and advanced human cognition we must therefore look much farther back in time, more than half a million years ago, to the common ancestor of Neanderthals and modern humans.”

What are star trails, and how can I capture them?

What are star trails, and how can I capture them?

When a camera captures a star’s movement across the sky, it’s called a star trail. An astrophotographer explains how he does it.

Star trails over GMT summit by Yuri Beletsky Nightscapes.

Star trails over the planned site of the Giant Magellan Telescope in the Atacama Desert in Chile. Image via Yuri Beletsky Nightscapes.

Star trails are the continuous paths created by stars, produced during long-exposure photographs, as shown on this page. In other words, the camera doesn’t track along with the stars’ apparent motion as night passes. Instead, the camera stays fixed, while, as the hours pass, the stars move. The resulting photos show the nightly movement of stars on the sky’s dome.

Star trails reflect Earth’s rotation, or spin, on its axis. The Earth rotates full circle relative to the backdrop stars in a period of about 23 hours and 56 minutes. So, as seen from Earth, all the stars go full circle and return to the same place in sky after this period of time, which astronomers call a sidereal (stellar) day.

Star trails and meteor

View larger. | Star trails (plus meteor) photo taken by Guy Livesay. Thank you, Guy! If you aim your camera northward in a long-exposure photo, the star trails will be seen to track around the north celestial pole. In fact, the stars move counter-clockwise around the sky’s north pole in the course of every night.

Montauk Point lighthouse. Photo: Neeti Kumthekar

Montauk Point lighthouse. Photo via Neeti Kumthekar.

What this means is that, if you’re standing out under the stars, you see them move across the sky as night passes. Stars rise in the east, arc across the sky and set in the west, just as the sun does.

Stars near the celestial poles produce the smallest circles while those near the celestial equator produce the largest. The stars – like the sun during the daytime – move from east to west across the sky each and every night. Each and every star moves 15 degrees westward in one hour.

Star trails are really arcs, or partial circles, whose ever-circling motions forever tabulate the great passage of time.

Sometimes you can get cool non-star effects into your photo, as Michael A. Rosinski did in this August 2014 photo.

Sometimes you can get cool non-star effects into your shot, as Michael A. Rosinski did in this photo.

Ken Christison captured these glorious around Polaris, the North Star, on February 15, 2013. He wrote,

Ken Christison captured these glorious star trails around Polaris, the North Star. He wrote, “For the most common and often the most spectacular star trails, you want to locate Polaris and compose the image so it is centered horizontally and hopefully you can have a bit of foreground for reference.”

EarthSky Facebook friend Ken Christison has some wonderful photos of star trails. He said the equipment needed for making startrails is pretty simple:

First, a camera that allows manual settings so you can set your f/stop and shutter speeds, as well as ISO.

Next, a wide angle lens, the wider the better.

A good steady tripod is a must.

Some cameras will have a built in intervalometer which can be set to shoot the desirable number of frames. In some cases the intervalometer has a bit of lag between shots, which is the reason I use a separate, remote attached to the camera that holds the shutter down and when the camera is set in continuous shooting mode will shoot 100 frames in succession with very little gap.

The remote I use is a simple one that can be found on eBay and uses a couple AAA batteries that last quite a while. I just use the remote controller attached to the 10 pin connector. There is no need to use the wireless receiver in this case.

I use a shutter speed of 30 seconds, ISO of 400 to 800, and with my 14-24mm lens at 14mm, shoot it wide open at f/2.8.

Next, he said, you’re ready to capture your star trail:

Make sure the camera is level, and after focusing on a star, make sure the autofocus is turned off. Then, using the settings mentioned above, click the shutter and stay around long enough to know that the shutter is actually actuating. I normally go back in the house, set the timer on our kitchen stove for 45 minutes, and do other things while the camera does its work.

When the timer sounds, go back out and reset the remote by turning it off, waiting for the shutter to close, then reset quickly.

Finally, you’ll want to process your photo. Ken said:

This is one of the most important elements in making star trail images. The program I use is free, works well and is simple to use: http://www.startrails.de/html/software.html.

One other program that I have heard works well and is also free is StarStax: http://www.markus-enzweiler.de/software/software.html.

The aliens will probably think we’re too dumb to kill

The aliens will probably think we’re too dumb to kill

This is existentially comforting when you think about it.

436
The number of reported UFO sightings this year, according to the National UFO Reporting Center

Yesterday, my favorite site on the internet, the National UFO Reporting Center, did my favorite thing: it updated its database of self-reported UFO sightings, and the 76 new entries it has added now make for a total of 436 sightings in 2018. The database itself is a fairly bare-bones affair, consisting mostly of anonymous accounts of weird stuff, many of which even the NUFORC thinks are people messing with them. But sometimes, the NUFORC posts something genuinely baffling, such as this video taken by a man in Pasadena featuring small white objects in the sky that don’t really look like planes or birds or anything. Could the man have just been taking a video of floating balloons or something like that? Yeah, probably, but it’s way more fun to just let the strangeness of it all — including the fact witness’s report notes that he took a break from UFO watching to play Pokémon Go — wash over you.

Relatedly, the theoretical physicist and author Michio Kaku — aka one of the pioneers of string theory — has been making the rounds plugging his new book The Future of Humanity, and recently took to Reddit to do an AmA in which he was asked to speculate what might happen if we ever made contact with aliens. In his answer, he wrote that he wouldn’t be surprised if we made “contact” of some sort with an extraterrestrial civilization “within this century.” Kaku’s answer, however, came with the caveats that A) even if we received a radio message from an alien civilization, it takes a really long time for radio waves to travel vast distances in space so if we responded it might take a while for our message and get back to them, and B) any alien civilization capable of “land[ing] on the White House lawn and announc[ing] their existence” probably wouldn’t bother doing so, because in order to travel to Earth they would need to be so much more technologically advanced than we were that they might not even recognize us as intelligent life.

I, personally, find Kaku’s comments fairly comforting — even if one of the NUFORC’s 436 UFO sightings were somehow legit, it’s nice to know that the aliens think we’re too dumb to destroy.

Fear robots, not aliens: Theoretical physicist Michio Kaku predicts ET contact

© Nezar Balout / AFP

Theoretical physicist and futurist Michio Kaku believes that humans will make contact with alien civilization this century, but expects they will be largely peaceful – unlike robots, which pose a greater threat to humanity.

Kaku made the revelations during a Reddit AMA (Ask me Anything), where intrigued users asked questions relating to artificial intelligence and extraterrestrial life. “Let me stick my neck out. I personally feel is that within this century, we will make contact with an alien civilization, by listening in on their radio communications,” Kaku stated, adding that he expects they will see us like we see forest animals.

“And what are their intentions. Are they expansive and aggressive, or peaceful. Another possibility is that they land on the White House lawn and announce their existence. But I think that is unlikely, since we would be like forest animals to them, i.e. not worth communicating with.”

View image on Twitter

Questions about hyperspace, the physics of the impossible, or THE FUTURE OF HUMANITY? Ask Me Anything on @reddit_AMA at http://iama.reddit.com , today @ 4:30 pm ET. #reddit #AskMichioKakuAnything

Kaku doubled down on this theory in another response, musing that humans will probably be seen as insignificant to alien society. At the core of their peaceful approach is knowledge, according to Kaku, who believes the extraterrestrials have had thousands of years to resolve sectarian, fundamentalist, nationalist questions.

The physicist admitted, however, that this neutral stance could shift if “we get in the way.” “They still might be dangerous if they simply don’t care about us and we get in the way. In War of the Worlds, the aliens did not hate us. We were simply in the way.”

“But for the most part, I think they will be peaceful, but view us like we view forest animals,” he concluded.

In contrast, Kaku suggested that robots will need chips implanted in their brains to control any “murderous thoughts.”Envisaging their future development, the scientist predicts that their intelligence level will go from that of a bug to a level on par with that of a monkey. “By that point they might become dangerous and even replace humans, near the end of the century. So I think we should put a chip in their brain to shut them off if they have murderous thoughts.”

Ultimately, humans may have to accept their fate and merge with their robot overlords, according to Kaku. “But what happens centuries from now, when robots evade even our most sophisticated fail-safe system?? At that point, I think we should merge with them."

“This may sound strange to some people, but remember that it is the people of the far future (not us) who will decide how far they want to modify themselves to deal with super smart robots.”

The dangers of AI and the grim possibility of a future with ‘killer robots’ have been addressed by several industry experts, including Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking. Musk was among more than a hundred tech leaders to call on the United Nations to ban the use of lethal autonomous weapons, or ‘killer robots, last year. The SpaceX and Tesla CEO believes AI is a “fundamental threat to human civilization.”

World-renowned physicist Stephen Hawking holds similar fears about the future of AI, warning that one day robots could entirely edge out human beings and become a new life form.

Supermassive black hole and host galaxy not evolving together?

Supermassive black hole and host galaxy not evolving together?

Astronomers assumed supermassive black holes and their host galaxies evolve together and affect each other. They call it “co-evolution.” But it’s not happening in the distant galaxy WISE1029.

Artist’s concept of gas outflow (in green) driven by a central supermassive black hole not affecting the star formation of its host galaxy. Maybe it happens when the gas is flowing especially perpendicularly to the galaxy’s flat disk.

Image via ALMA (ESO/NAOJ/NRAO). Look below for real images of the galaxy in this study.

In recent decades, astronomers have learned that almost all massive galaxies have a supermassive black hole at their hearts. More recent findings show that the masses of these black holes match that of their host galaxies; that is, the more massive the galaxy, the more massive the black hole. And so it’s been natural for astronomers to assume that supermassive black holes and their host galaxies have evolved together and affect each other. That’s why astronomers are so puzzled by new results from the ALMA telescope in Chile, suggesting no relationship between a distant galaxy and its supermassive black hole.

Yoshiki Toba of the Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics in Taiwan led this new research. The team used the ALMA radio telescope, because it’s sensitive to millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths and thus good at studying distant gas clouds – for example, those that form stars and possibly planets within our own local Milky Way galaxy. Galaxies evolve in large part by forming stars, and ALMA can also be aimed toward distant galaxies, to study star-forming gas in their disks. Plus, it can peer at the gas flowing outward from the vicinity of a distant galaxy’s central supermassive black hole.

Toba and his colleagues aimed the telescope toward an active galaxy known as WISE1029+0501. This galaxy is known to have a strong ionized gas outflow, presumably from the supermassive black hole at its center. The team also clearly detected carbon monoxide (CO) gas associated with that distant galaxy’s flat disk. Such gas is known to be related to star formation. Yet, these astronomers found, the CO gas in the flat part of the galaxy is not affected by the strong ionized gas outflow launched by the supermassive black hole from the galaxy’s center. Yoshiki commented in a February 20, 2018, statement from ALMA:

… it has made the co-evolution of galaxies and supermassive black holes more puzzling.

And he added:

… understanding such co-evolution is crucial for astronomy. By collecting statistical data of this kind of galaxies and continuing in more follow-up observations using ALMA, we hope to reveal the truth.

Yoshiki’s research was published in late 2017 in the peer-reviewed Astrophysical Journal.

The team has focused on a particular type of objects called Dust-Obscured Galaxy (DOG) that has a prominent feature: despite being very faint in visible light, it is very bright in the infrared. This image shows the DOG that the team studied, WISE1029. The left and right panels show an optical image from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and a mid-infrared image from WISE, respectively.

Bottom line: Astronomers thought that supermassive black holes and their host galaxies evolved together, but maybe – in at least some cases – they don’t.

Some black holes erase your past

Some black holes erase your past

You can’t survive a passage into a black hole … or can you? A UC Berkeley mathematician says you could enter certain types of black holes, but your past would be obliterated and you’d have an infinite number of possible futures.

A reasonably realistic simulation of falling into a black hole shows how space and time are distorted, and how light is blue shifted as you approach the inner or Cauchy horizon, where most physicists think you would be annihilated. However, a UC Berkeley mathematician argues that you could, in fact, survive passage through this horizon.

By Robert Sanders/Berkeley News

In the real world, your past uniquely determines your future. If a physicist knows how the universe starts out, she can calculate its future for all time and all space.

But a UC Berkeley mathematician has found some types of black holes in which this law breaks down. If someone were to venture into one of these relatively benign black holes, they could survive, but their past would be obliterated and they could have an infinite number of possible futures.

Such claims have been made in the past, and physicists have invoked strong cosmic censorship to explain it away. That is, something catastrophic – typically a horrible death – would prevent observers from actually entering a region of spacetime where their future was not uniquely determined. This principle, first proposed 40 years ago by physicist Roger Penrose, keeps sacrosanct an idea – determinism [cause and effect] – key to any physical theory.

That is, given the past and present, the physical laws of the universe do not allow more than one possible future.

But, says UC Berkeley postdoctoral fellow Peter Hintz, mathematical calculations show that for some specific types of black holes in a universe like ours, which is expanding at an accelerating rate, it is possible to survive the passage from a deterministic world into a non-deterministic black hole.

What life would be like in a space where the future was unpredictable is unclear. But the finding does not mean that Einstein’s equations of general relativity, which so far perfectly describe the evolution of the cosmos, are wrong, said Hintz. He said:

No physicist is going to travel into a black hole and measure it. This is a math question. But from that point of view, this makes Einstein’s equations mathematically more interesting. This is a question one can really only study mathematically, but it has physical, almost philosophical implications, which makes it very cool.

Hintz and his colleagues published a paper describing these unusual black holes in January 2018 in the journal Physical Review Letters.

Beyond the Event Horizon

Black holes are bizarre objects that get their name from the fact that nothing can escape their gravity, not even light. If you venture too close and cross the so-called event horizon, you’ll never escape.

For small black holes, you’d never survive such a close approach anyway. The tidal forces close to the event horizon are enough to spaghettify anything: that is, stretch it until it’s a string of atoms.

Still image taken from an animation by Andrew Hamilton, based on supercomputer simulation by John Hawley.

But for large black holes, like the supermassive objects at the cores of galaxies like the Milky Way, which weigh tens of millions if not billions of times the mass of a star, crossing the event horizon would be, well, uneventful.

Because it should be possible to survive the transition from our world to the black hole world, physicists and mathematicians have long wondered what that world would look like, and have turned to Einstein’s equations of general relativity to predict the world inside a black hole. These equations work well until an observer reaches the center, or singularity, where in theoretical calculations the curvature of spacetime becomes infinite.

Even before reaching the center, however, a black hole explorer – who would never be able to communicate what she found to the outside world – could encounter some weird and deadly milestones. Hintz studies a specific type of black hole – a standard, non-rotating black hole with an electrical charge – and such an object has a so-called Cauchy horizon within the event horizon.

The Cauchy horizon is the spot where determinism breaks down, where the past no longer determines the future. Physicists, including Penrose, have argued that no observer could ever pass through the Cauchy horizon point because they would be annihilated.

As the argument goes, as an observer approaches the horizon, time slows down, since clocks tick slower in a strong gravitational field. As light, gravitational waves and anything else encountering the black hole fall inevitably toward the Cauchy horizon, an observer also falling inward would eventually see all this energy barreling in at the same time. In effect, all the energy the black hole sees over the lifetime of the universe hits the Cauchy horizon at the same time, blasting into oblivion any observer who gets that far.

You Can’t See Forever in an Expanding Universe

Hintz realized, however, that this may not apply in an expanding universe that is accelerating, such as our own. Because spacetime is being increasingly pulled apart, much of the distant universe will not affect the black hole at all, since that energy can’t travel faster than the speed of light.

A spacetime diagram of the gravitational collapse of a charged spherical star to form a charged black hole. An observer traveling across the event horizon will eventually encounter the Cauchy horizon, the boundary of the region of spacetime that can be predicted from the initial data. Hintz and his colleagues found that a region of spacetime, denoted by a question mark, cannot be predicted from the initial data in a universe with accelerating expansion, like our own. This violates the principle of strong cosmic censorship.

Image via APS/Alan Stonebraker.

In fact, the energy available to fall into the black hole is only that contained within the observable horizon: the volume of the universe that the black hole can expect to see over the course of its existence. For us, for example, the observable horizon is bigger than the 13.8 billion light-years we can see into the past, because it includes everything that we will see forever into the future. The accelerating expansion of the universe will prevent us from seeing beyond a horizon of about 46.5 billion light-years.

In that scenario, the expansion of the universe counteracts the amplification caused by time dilation inside the black hole, and for certain situations, cancels it entirely. In those cases – specifically, smooth non-rotating black holes with a large electrical charge, so-called Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter black holes – an observer could survive passing through the Cauchy horizon and into a non-deterministic world. Hintz said:

There are some exact solutions of Einstein’s equations that are perfectly smooth, with no kinks, no tidal forces going to infinity, where everything is perfectly well behaved up to this Cauchy horizon and beyond.

Hintz noted that the passage through the horizon would be painful but brief.

After that, all bets are off; in some cases, such as a Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter black hole, one can avoid the central singularity altogether and live forever in a universe unknown.

Admittedly, he said, charged black holes are unlikely to exist, since they’d attract oppositely charged matter until they became neutral. However, the mathematical solutions for charged black holes are used as proxies for what would happen inside rotating black holes, which are probably the norm. Hintz argues that smooth, rotating black holes, called Kerr-Newman-de Sitter black holes, would behave the same way. Hintz said:

That is upsetting, the idea that you could set out with an electrically charged star that undergoes collapse to a black hole, and then Alice travels inside this black hole and if the black hole parameters are sufficiently extremal, it could be that she can just cross the Cauchy horizon, survives that and reaches a region of the universe where knowing the complete initial state of the star, she will not be able to say what is going to happen. It is no longer uniquely determined by full knowledge of the initial conditions. That is why it’s very troublesome.

Hintz’s paper has already sparked other papers, one of which purports to show that most well-behaved black holes will not violate determinism. But Hintz insists that one instance of violation is one too many. He said:

People had been complacent for some 20 years, since the mid ‘90s, that strong cosmological censorship is always verified. We challenge that point of view.

Bottom line: A UC Berkeley mathematician suggests that there are some types of black holes in which the law of determinism breaks down.

Today's Top Space Headline: "Communicating With Aliens" --Clues from Earth's 7,000 Languages (WATCH Video)

6a00d8341bf7f753ef01bb08a2fc8c970d-600wi

“We can’t use ourselves as a starting point,” said Sheri Wells-Jensen, an associate professor of linguists at Bowling Green State University. “We are an endpoint at looking at things. We are the product of evolution. We’re like pond scum.”

Studying alien languages might seem like a silly, science fiction fantasy reports today's Inverse. But at the rate we’ve discovered more habitable Earth-like worlds, we are bound to encounter an alien species pretty soon. Wells-Jensen is one of a tiny group of people who has actively thought about how an alien species will communicate with humans. The only thing she knows for sure is that there’s no way to know how they’ll communicate.

“It’s profoundly humancentric to think they’ll talk like us and look like us,” Wells-Jensen told Inverse. The fact that most sci-fi revolves around aliens who speak through voice boxes like us, are bipedal, and even have vaguely anthropomorphic faces limits our imagination as to how extraterrestrial beings will speak when they get here. In reality, more likely than not, their bodies won’t operate or look a single thing like ours. And that means their communication mechanism will be wildly different from ours.

“We’re only beginning to understand that the way we think and communicate and what we build is determined by the way our bodies are shaped and our sensory apparatus,” Wells-Jensen said. For example, if we didn’t perceive sound waves, then our use of sound as a communication device would not exist. Consider the way deaf people communicate so expressively with their hands and faces, and are unable to lasso their voices into the pitch and tone the way hearing humans do when they talk.

Before we can begin to hypothesize about any extraterrestrial language, we must examine our basis for understanding what language is. We should examine what we know—and, even more important, what we presume—about language. One approach linguistics has taken is to look deeply into the structure of a single language with the goal of capturing its essence in a series of descriptive principles; this approach assumes that each Earth language has within it a "universal" set of rules that characterize all potential human languages.

Another approach would be to study the 7,000 or so known Earth languages to identify what all of them have in common and distill the set of descriptive principles from there. Unfortunately, both approaches are quite human-centric, and even with a dataset of 7,000 languages to work with, we still have effectively only one data point. Still, defining this single data point is useful because we can't think outside the box until we have identified the box.

With this in mind, what we could do is examine those 7,000 languages to establish what is rare among them or what they all lack: That is, what presuppositions do they all make? What things are unsaid, or even unsayable, because these things are too obvious, too obscure, or somehow foreign to human cognition? We cannot know which of our assumptions about language might be natural outgrowths of intelligence and therefore truly universal, and which result from specifically human factors; the best we can do at this point is lay out the possibilities.

In the Denis Villeneuve space-opera Arrival, 12 pods from outer space land at various locations on Earth, each operated by a strange species of alien. The American government enlists a linguist — Louise Banks, played by Amy Adams — to try to figure out what these extraterrestrials want, but it’s not going to be easy.

The first, and most significant, hurdle is language. How is someone who’s learned only Earth-based languages supposed to communicate with a group of beings that gurgle out croaks and write in what look like inky floating coffee stains?

Anatomy and physiology do more than dictate how we speak; it’s our way of understanding the world, which is vital to how early humans developed the language, and how we comprehend the world around us. “What if you had a race of aliens that couldn’t see? In what ways would that change the way they built their civilization and how they understand their world?” Wells-Jensen proposed. “We have some data to suggest that the way we are physically built might influence the way our language is structured. It’s because we walk erect, our top appendages are free, and we have to use our hands to do things.”

Language, after all, is a verbal reflection of how we understand our world through our bodies: We crawl, we stagger, we cry, we laugh. We look to see the stars, taste our morning coffee, smell the garbage on the streets, rub our hands in nervousness. Which makes the heptopods that Louise Banks deals with in Arrival an especially hard one to understand, given that they experience the world with seven fingers, no obvious eyes or ears, and a language based purely on sound reverberations.

There’s also the fact that even if we did come to a point where we could speak the same language as an extraterrestrial species, we wouldn’t have the language to express certain concepts. “You see this with those lists of things in English that we don’t have a word for,” Wells-Jensen points out. And it could happen the other way around too — extraterrestrials might have phrases for concepts that they don’t have words for, which means we’ll have a rough time getting their worldview as well.

Alien Invasion: What Would Aliens REALLY Want With The Earth?

Let’s put aside the questions as to whether or not we’ve been visited by aliens. Let’s ask a better question: Why would aliens visit us at all? Is there anything about Earth that makes us prone to an alien invasion?

An Alien Invasion has Occurred, But For What Reason?

While there’s plenty of talk of human-alien hybridization programs & plans to take over our government and make us slaves, do these ideas make any sense? I mean, if a far advanced alien race came here with the intent of making us slaves, they wouldn’t need to infiltrate our government to do so. They’d just… do it. They would just do it because they’re so advanced relative to us. So let’s explore the possibilities…

The Most Unlikely Scenarios for an Alien Invasion

The first 2 scenarios really have good reasons why they’re unlikely. While they’re popular with hardcore alien enthusiasts, many of which believe these things are happening now or have in the past, a step back to reality doesn’t support these ideas. The likely scenarios are much more insidious and dire for humans in the event of a true alien invasion.

#1 Gold Mining

Gold is a very rare metal. For thousands of years, humans have mined it. We work for it. We kill for it. Aliens want gold too.

The idea is a cornerstone for Ancient Alien theorists. They believe that aliens came to the earth in ancient times to mine gold. In their desire for gold, they genetically modified ancient apes to make them more intelligent. The theory states that modern-day humans, us, are those genetically modified apes. Aliens designed us to have love and desire for gold so that we would mine it for them by our own ‘choice’.

The Argument for an Alien Gold Mining Operation

Truth be told, there isn’t much evidence in support of this theory. Everyone who reads this blog knows my stance on the Ancient Alien religion. It’s undeniable that humans have a love and obsession with gold. We also have a love and obsession with lots of pretty stones and shiny metals that aren’t gold.

The Reality – Gold isn’t THAT Rare

While gold is a rare metal by certain standards, there’s no reason to think Earth has more gold than other rocky planets. Gold can only be created during a supernova and any planets forming in the resulting cloud of heavy elements will have some gold on them. So does it really make sense that aliens would travel here specifically for gold? Probably not. The fact of the matter is that from the perspective of an interstellar species, gold isn’t that rare or hard to find.

Alien technology would be so great, they wouldn’t need human ‘slaves’ to mine gold for them. They’d have machines that can do it much faster. Additionally, there’s no reason why they would choose an inhabited planet to mine when there are so many uninhabited ones out there. If they did choose to mine an inhabited planet such as the Earth, they’d probably wipe out all life first so that they wouldn’t have to deal with all the ankle biting from the pesky humans.

#2 Hybridization for Their Dying Species

Another popular theory by alien-believers is that aliens are running a hybridization program. The theory postulates aliens are a dying species, abducting humans, and taking DNA to merge with their own in order to strengthen their own biology. Many people believe it’s already happening.

The Arguments for an Alien Hybridization Program

The proponents of the theory point to cases of alien abduction & cattle mutilations as evidence. Sightings of cryptids, such as the Chupacabra, are cited as examples of alien hybridization having gone wrong.

Additionally, many female abductees describe being artificially inseminated and forced to carry fetuses only to be abducted later and having it removed. Male abductees frequently describe having semen extracted from them by their alien abductors. Some folks claim to have had sexual encounters with extraterrestrials.

The Reality – You Don’t Need Much DNA for Hybridization

By far, the weakest part of the entire theory is that a little DNA goes a long way. A single human carries enough DNA information to hybridize an entire generation of extraterrestrials. Aside from the fact that many abduction cases can be dismissed as instances of sleep paralysis, continued abductions for 50+ years would be unnecessary.

It’s also worth noting that a species capable of interstellar travel would have learned how to genetically modify themselves without the need for samples from a relatively primordial species such as ourselves.

The Most Likely Scenarios for an Alien Invasion

This set of scenarios for an alien invasion take into account what science knows about intelligent life and how it behaves. Of course, we only have ourselves to look at, but you work with what you’ve got right? These scenarios which come from real scientists are much more disturbing than some of the fantasy stories tossed around by the ancient alien and conspiracy crowds.

#1 Their Own Earth-like Planet was Destroyed

What if aliens weren’t very different from us? What if they came from a planet just like ours in a neighboring solar system? Maybe their planet died or became uninhabitable, and the entire species took the skies looking for a new place to call home.

Nebula

Woah, This One is Crazy to Think About

As a skeptic, this scenario for an alien invasion is mind blowing because it could actually happen. No planet lives forever. Our own Earth has gone through several mass extinction events and there’s no reason to think other planets would be any different.

We’d likely be powerless to stop it, and if our own history of exploration is any indication, it wouldn’t turn out very well for us humans. Think about what happened to the Native Americans when Europeans discovered the New World…

#2 Natural Resources that Support Carbon-Based Life

If there’s one thing more rare in the universe than gold and diamonds, it’s life. At least, life as we know it – carbon-based life. Life with all its associated proteins & fats is likely the rarest thing in the cosmos. We know this because we’ve looked around and not found it anywhere else.

Tropical Paradise

Photo by Milada Vigerova on Unsplash

Earth’s Natural Resources Would be a Figurative Goldmine

While it rains diamonds on Jupiter and Saturn, the compounds necessary to support carbon-based life are much rarer. Earth’s trees, plants, animals, & humans might be so rare in the universe that aliens could invade in order to use these sources of energy.

The rarity of life in the universe makes the Earth a prime candidate for aliens wishing to create a planetary zoo or to rule us. They could also potentially farm the life on Earth for food much as humans currently do.

#3 Dominance

It could simply be that a space-faring race may come to the earth simply to rule the population. Remember Superman 2? Political and social power can be addictive and satisfying to intelligent beings. The desire to rule may even be a common trait of all intelligent species.

alien invasion grey alien

The Desire to Rule Depends on the Aliens

The culture of the aliens who happen to find us really determines the likelihood of this scenario. By all counts, it’s a true alien invasion of the type only seen in movies and cinema. The takeover could be quick and violent, or it could be slow and shadowy. Proponents say it’s already happening. They point to reports of reptilian aliens infiltrating our government and big corporations as evidence.

#4 They Might Be Looking for a Planetary Zoo

Zoos are pretty cool. Maybe aliens think so too? Perhaps aliens wouldn’t actually invade the earth as much as keeping it ‘caged up’ for observation.

lions in zoo

Photo by Shireah Ragnar on Unsplash

Another Very Possible Alien Invasion Scenario

Like the previous example, the planetary zoo is very possible. What’s really crazy? It might already be happening and we aren’t even aware of it.

#5 Food – Humans? Yummy!

There isn’t a single animal on this planet that humans won’t eat. We’ll eat anything except other humans (and there are even exceptions to that as well). Aliens might be the same way, especially if carbon-based life turns out to be a compatible food for their biology.

Steak Rosemary

The Scariest Scenario of All: Humans = Cattle

Based our own behavior towards other animals, this scenario is highly likely. Perhaps, it’s the most likely of all. And it’s utterly terrifying. With advanced intelligence and technology, humans would be raised as cattle scarcely aware of our true purpose. We might live out our lives without so much as a hint of our grisly ends at the hands of our alien farmers.

Other Reasons?

We can only guess at the motives of our potential alien invaders. Perhaps the alien invasion will have nothing to do with us at all, or maybe it will have everything to do with us. Regardless, if aliens ever do come to meet us with technology millions of years ahead of us, we won’t have much say in the matter anyway. And that’s the scariest part of the entire thing.

What do you think? Why would aliens invade the earth? Let us know below in the comments.

Ezekiel’s Wheel and the Extraterrestrial Question

Ezekiel’s Wheel and the Extraterrestrial Question

General Bible Discourses Vol 16. — Ezekiel's Wheel and the Extraterrestrial Question

There is a story in Ezekiel chapter 1, known as “Ezekiel’s Wheel”. This story is believed by many people both Christian and non-Christian alike, to represent an alien encounter experienced by the prophet Ezekiel. The four beasts in this story are often interpreted to be aliens, and the wheels are often interpreted to be flying saucers. However, the vision seen by the prophet Ezekiel in Ezekiel chapter 1, is likely a reference to the “Four Conquering Empires” of the Holy Bible namely Babylon, Persia, Macedon, and Rome. It should be noted that there are similar visions of four beasts had by the Prophet Daniel in the book of Daniel chapter 7, which turn out to be these same empires. In the book of Revelations Chapter 4, the Apostle John also documents his own visions that are similar to Ezekiel and Daniel’s visions in regards to beasts representing empires. Because of these similarities in representations concerning the dreams and visions had by prophets and apostles, I encourage the historical study of biblical narratives before reading and attempting to interpret dreams, visions, and revelations as they are presented in the Holy Bible.

Image result for Ezekiel’s Wheel and the Extraterrestrial Question

... myself who had actually tried to figure out what the heck did Ezekiel see. Look at these artistic interpretations of what he saw … just look at them!

With the advent of the science fiction genre of entertainment, namely comic books, video games, television shows, and movies, the human imagination is more creative and vibrant than ever, making concepts such as aliens seem less impossible. The Bible does not address the existence of extra-terrestrial beings as we know them in the science fiction genre of entertainment. There are however, reports in the Bible of Angels appearing to man in modern times; Hebrews 13:2 tells us that these angels assume the appearance of everyday mortal men and that a person would not know that these men are of a divine nature. In my opinion, a person needs devout faith to believe in aliens, namely beings from distant galaxies that possess intelligence.

In my estimation, the sketchy photographs and imaginative artistic renderings of aliens and their spacecrafts and technology are not reliable as factual. Imagine if concrete evidence of Alien life was found. Whatever that evidence was, would be the centerpiece of every political address, film documentary, news story, magazine cover, religious sermon, and scientific inquiry all over the world. Museums would acquire the rights to these discoveries and charge healthy prices to the general public in order to view them. If living aliens were found, they would be placed in specialized zoos, open to any and all who could pay the money required to observe them. Scientists would dissect the bodies of deceased aliens and publish their findings in academic journals, and academic textbooks all over the world. The trajectory of human life would be forever changed based on these findings. Due to the absence of any of these historical, commercial, and scientific events, I conclude that the existence of extraterrestrials and their technology is a matter of personal belief, not much unlike the faith and personal belief that it takes to believe in angels or demons, albeit without the guidance of a holy book to contextualize the existence of such beings.

The new evidence contradicts previous research suggesting water was confined to certain areas and depended on lunar days. “We find that it doesn’t matter what time of day or which latitude we look at, the signal indicating water always seems to be present,” said Joshua Bandfield, a senior research scientist with the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colorado, and lead author of a new study published in Nature Geoscience.

“The presence of water doesn’t appear to depend on the composition of the surface, and the water sticks around,” he added. It’s hoped the results will lead to a greater understanding of the origins of the moon’s water and offer insight into how it could be used as a resource.

It’s not yet clear how accessible the water supply is but if it is convenient to reach it could be used as a drinking water for future explorers or converted to use for rocket fuel, NASA said in a statement.

Water, water, everywhere, but is there a drop to drink? Data from 2 lunar missions finds evidence that the Moon’s water is widely distributed across the surface. If the Moon has enough accessible 🌊, it could be an essential resource to future explorers: http://go.nasa.gov/2EPwxX3

Earlier studies suggested that more water was detected at the moon’s polar latitudes and that the strength of the water signal waxes and wanes according to the lunar day. However, these analyses depended on remote-sensing instruments which were challenged by the mixture of reflected and emitted light. For this latest examination, Bandfield and his team created a new model to incorporate temperature information for more accurate results.

Their results showed widespread and relatively immobile water indicating that it may be present primarily as hydroxyl (OH), a more reactive relative of H2O that is made of one oxygen atom and one hydrogen atom. It also suggests that any H2O present on the moon isn’t loosely attached to the surface.

“By putting some limits on how mobile the water or the OH on the surface is, we can help constrain how much water could reach the cold traps in the polar regions,” said Michael Poston, of the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas.

Discussions are still continuing among researchers about what exactly these new findings reveal about the source of the moon’s water. One theory is that the water is created by the solar wind hitting the lunar surface; however, the team hasn’t ruled out the possibility that the moon itself could be the source. It is conceivable that the water could be slowly released from deep inside minerals, where it has been locked since the moon was formed, NASA stated.

“Some of these scientific problems are very, very difficult, and it’s only by drawing on multiple resources from different missions that are we able to hone in on an answer,” said NASA scientist John Keller.

The Shaver Mystery: UFOs, the Hollow Earth, and the Birth of a Science Fiction Sub-Genre

The Shaver Mystery: UFOs, the Hollow Earth, and the Birth of a Science Fiction Sub-Genre

It was 1945, and science fiction writer Ray Palmer was working as the editor of a popular pulp fiction magazine called Amazing Stories. A diminutive fellow with a hunchback, Palmer had suffered a near-crippling accident early in life that broke his spine, and the resulting unsuccessful surgery stunted his growth. Thus, at the age of 35, Palmer had grown to a mere four feet in height.

It was on an afternoon during the year in question that Palmer happened upon an odd letter in the office slush pile. The letter was from a man who claimed he had managed to decipher a secret, coded ancient language, of which evidence could still be discerned from modern writing. Palmer wrote back to the author, a Mr. Richard Sharp Shaver of Pennsylvania, seeking clarification on the unusual matter. This prompted a long, rambling letter from Shaver, who claimed to learn of this, and other mysteries of our world, after psychically overhearing the communications of beings living in extensive caverns below ground.

Shaver was no great writer himself, if this grandiloquent offering was any indication, though Palmer saw potential nonetheless. From it, he began to construct an outline based on Shaver’s missive, and shaped it into a decent fantasy story, which eventually saw publication under the title, “I Remember Lemuria.”

Thus, the Shaver Mystery was born.

Initially intended to be read and enjoyed only as fiction, Shaver’s weird ramblings would inspire Palmer and the publishers of Amazing Stories to continue publication of “Shaver Mystery” stories for several years, during which the readership of the magazine reportedly increased by thousands. Throughout the period which saw the publication of stories based on his odd, rambling mythos, Shaver had always maintained that his “communications” with inner-earth dwellers were real and that the stories of cavern systems inhabited by strange beings beneath the Earth were based on fact.

Following the publication of the novella “I Remember Lemuria,” Palmer professed that letters his publication recieved–usually numbering less than fifty or so each month–were now close to 50,000. Equally impressive had been that many of these fan letters detailed strange experiences, expounding on the exploits of these deep-Earth denizens Shaver claimed to have met.

Among the letters Palmer received had been the story of a woman who, claiming to have served as a medical specialist in France during the Second World War, entered the sub-basement of an old building via an elevator. A cavernous opening existed in the lowest portion of the building, and upon her discovery of the entrance to an underground realm, the woman was captured by a group of monstrous creatures. She claimed to have been held prisoner by these beings for an indefinite period, after which she was finally discovered and released by a group of benign, human-like saviors. (An apparent nod toward this story was later featured in the works of science fiction writer Harlan Ellison, who wrote in a short story titled, “The Elevator People” that, “There are five hundred buildings in the United States whose elevators go deeper than the basement.” Ellison, however, was a vocal critic of the Shaver Mystery stories and had at one time badgered Palmer about his insistence on publishing them.)

Much like the story above outlines, Shaver categorized these subterranean inhabitants into two different groups: a monstrous, evil group called Deros (meaning “detrimental robots”), and their good-natured counterparts the Teros, who were nearly identical to humans in appearance.

Palmer himself had begun to wonder about the circumstances surrounding all this insanity, and Shaver’s claims that the events related in his letters to Amazing Stories were true. His curiosity finally prompted a visit to Richard Shaver’s home in Pennsylvania. After a late-evening coffee session, Palmer was led upstairs and shown to the spare bedroom, where throughout the evening he claimed, to his astonishment, to hear five individual voices of men, women, children, and even an “old gruff man.” According to Palmer, he was terrified to hear a discussion that pertained to the dismemberment of a human woman someplace four miles away–and presumably four miles down. Discussing the experience with Shaver the following morning, the strange host claimed he had asked the “beings” to “go easy on him (Palmer),” and Palmer, finally growing in his conviction regarding the Shaver Mystery himself, was able to get a night’s sleep uninterrupted.

This would be only one of many strange stories Palmer would recount, and though Richard Shaver’s own sanity would later come into question on many occasions, the prolific interest in his visions of an inner-Earth struggle would continue, inspiring a generation of devotees and researchers that included Timothy Green Beckley, who had known Palmer personally. Of his own discovery of Richard Shaver’s visions of conflict in a subterranean world, he admits being “chilled to the bone,” by the stories as a young reader, saying it was “stuff that nightmares were made of, and I was intrigued just as Ray Palmer had been.”

Palmer’s convictions about Shaver’s ideas would come and go over the years. After leaving Amazing Stories, the former editor was still under contractual obligations that prevented him from launching a competing publication. He did, however, do so anyway under a pseudonym, which led to the appearance of FATE, a magazine which, at the time, was mostly devoted to the burgeoning interest in flying saucers that followed pilot Kenneth Arnold’s observation of a group of objects over Mount Rainier, Washington in 1947.

Initially, Palmer had been convinced that the appearance of flying saucers might prove to be a vindication for Shaver’s claims, supposing that the seemingly advanced aircraft might actually belong to the subterranean dwellers discussed in his stories. With the founding of FATE, Palmer hoped in part to be able to get to the bottom of the saucer mystery, but after a few years, he left the operation which continued under the publication of his partner, Curtis Fuller.

Ultimately, what was Palmer to make of Shaver and his stories? Like many, it seemed by the 1970s that he had become disillusioned with Shaver and his claims, even noting in 1971 that during periods Shaver claimed to have lived underground amidst the warring factions of Deros and Teros, that he had instead been hospitalized in a mental institution.

The stories, of course, were purely imaginary, supplemented perhaps by the ramblings of a once disturbed mind; but in their heyday, the stories of Richard Shaver saw a kind of success and popularity that was nearly unrivaled in the science fiction genre.

UFO Fleet Caught On Video Moving Underneath a Passenger Jet

UFO Fleet Caught On Video Moving Underneath a Passenger Jet

taiwan-ufo

Online community on UFOs has been debating about the video showing an inexplicable fleet of UFOs recorded on video from a plane. The footage was initially sent to US-based Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), which keeps a global database of UFO sightings, for investigations and it went viral after several UFO and conspiracy theory websites shared it.

The video was allegedly shot above Taiwan. It shows apparent eight bright circular orbs flying slowly just beneath the plane. According to the report from an unnamed witness, they were on the aeroplane of Eva Airlines from Vancouver, Canada to Taipei, Taiwan when they saw bright lights flying underneath. They saw around eight UFOs flying under the plane.

They managed to get a slow-motion video of the UFOs until they were asked to shut down their camera as part of a landing policy.

Many online viewers of the video thought it was a fleet of UFOs moving beneath the plane.

The video was recorded in October 2014, but only recently it has been shared online.

Sceptics believe those are just reflections of small lakes as the plane appears to travel over mountains. Some even say that they are only ships in the sea as they are not moving and not above the clouds. Others suggest they are oil rigs as the plane is leaving them behind, which means they are either slower or stationary.

However, many firmly believe that those are evidence of UFOs.

1°) la négation officielle qui s’exerce par une pression sur les témoins pour les décourager de témoigner;

2°) dès qu’un témoin parvient à expliquer ce qu’il a vu, il y a fabrication par les autorités, de toute une panoplie d’explications fantaisistes n’ayant aucun rapport avec le phénomène;

http://pleinsfeux.org/la-grande-tromperie-de-satan/#.UfW_…

…

Strange Blue Rays of Light in the Sky over Hawaii

Strange Blue Rays of Light in the Sky over Hawaii

A very rare light pillar was captured on the night of February 13/14, 2018 by the Gemini skycam facing south from the top of Mauna Kea in Hawaii. Frankie Lucena who was checking the skycam came across this rarely seen event in this part of the world.

Light pillars usually occur in cold climates, so to see them this far south is indeed very rare. But not only the strange light pillar appeared over Hawaii, even stranger are the three blue rays of light that suddenly came out of nowhere.

The rare light pillar in Hawaii could be a natural phenomenon, like the amazing light pillar at sunrise photographed by our reader from Coventry in the UK on February 14, 2018. Thanks.

But what about the blue rays of light?

Lightning, maybe but these blue rays of light are completely different from the specific lightning strikes as we know.

Scientist Warns; Mankind Must Prepare To Defend Itself Against An Attack From Space

Scientist Warns; Mankind Must Prepare To Defend Itself Against An Attack From Space

According to a Russian scientist, our civilization has to prepare to repel an attack from space.

No, we won’t be fighting aliens yet, but potential alien civilizations aren’t the only threat to humanity.

According to Konstantin Sivkov, a member of the Russian Missile and Artillery Academy and a senior captain of the Russian Army, we need to create weapons to defend Earth against doomsday asteroids.

According to a military officer from Russia, mankind must develop a weapon capable of repelling potentially dangerous asteroids and comets, in order to save mankind.

In an article published by the newspaper VPK News, the Russian senior captain has suggested that the international community needs to work on a weapon that has the ability to repel potentially dangerous celestial bodies.

The scientist believes that the threat represented by asteroids for humanity deserves the creation of an international weapon to combat them.

“In the face of the danger of the extinction of the human being as a biological species, all our geopolitical conflicts are like a children’s fight in a sandbox over a toy,” he compared.

Konstantin Sivkov, a member of the Russian Missile and Artillery Academy suggests international conflicts are incomparable to a threat from outer space.

The expert proposes to destroy asteroids with rockets that have self-guided thermonuclear warheads and to create “a system of regular or omnidirectional control of the space that surrounds the Earth” for the detection of dangerous asteroids.

Furthermore, Sivkov has stated that the proposed system has to be controlled by a “scientific council”, while businessmen, politicians, soldiers and “representatives of any military structure” that produce “cannibalistic theories about the reasonable reduction of the population” do not have to be involved in the decision-making process in this regard.

Humanity must work together and help create a defense system to protect our planet and ensure our existence.

The expert believes that the project that he has recently proposed is, in fact, a possible goal, since despite the high costs of the project “only 25-30% of the current US military budget would be needed”.

Considering that US military expenditures for the fiscal year 2018 constitute, according to the approval of the Trump Administration, 700,000 million dollars, the initiative of Sivkov would come out to the international community much cheaper: just about 210,000 million dollars.

Taking into consideration that several countries would participate in the program, the project turns out to be relatively cheap. But then again, who can put a price on the survival of the human race?

Researchers Make Discovery Of Biblical Proportions After Unearthing 2,700-Year-Old Seal

Researchers Make Discovery Of Biblical Proportions After Unearthing 2,700-Year-Old Seal

Researchers believe they may have found the direct evidence of the Prophet Isaiah on a 2,700-year-old clay seal discovered in Jerusalem, which bears the signature of the ‘Biblical Figure.’

According to researchers, the Hebrew script located on the clay seal reads: ‘Belonging to Isaiah the prophet,’ according to a new article in Biblical Archeology Review.

If this is indeed true, it would be the first ever evidence of the existence of Isaiah outside of the Bible. Furthermore, this would be the oldest reference to the prophet outside the Bible.

If researchers are able to confirm that the seal impression was for the Prophet Isaiah, it ‘would be the first archaeological and the earliest extra-biblical reference to the prophet Isaiah ever discovered,’ Robert Cargill, an archaeologist, and professor of classic and religious studies at the University of Iowa told Live Science.

In the article, titled ‘Is This the Prophet Isaiah’s Signature?’ author, archaeologist and professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem Eilat Mazar suggests that the ancient Hebrew inscription appearing in the damaged clay seal of 1.2 centimeters could have read “Belonging to the prophet Isaiah.”

Isaiah-seal-jerusalem.jpg

The seal is believed to read: Belonging to Isaiah the prophet.

‘We appear to have discovered a seal impression, which may have belonged to the prophet Isaiah, in a scientific, archaeological excavation,’ said Mazar.

A Great discovery, open to interpretation?

If the interpretation of the characters of the 2,700-year seal is correct, it would be the first reference to Isaiah outside of the Bible. The Hebrew prophet is described as a counselor to the Jewish king Hezekiah, who ruled between the late eighth century and the early seventh century BC.

This important piece of history was recovered by archaeologists during excavations at the Ophel, an archaeological site between the ‘City of David’ and the ‘Temple Mount’.

The location of the discovery, near Temple Mount.

The Hebrew Bible tells us that Isaiah’s call to prophecy roughly coincides with the beginning of the westward expansion of the Assyrian empire. According to the Torah, the Prophet Isaiah lived 700 years before Christ.

The name of Isaiah (‘Yesha’yahu’ in Hebrew) is visible on the seal. However, the damage to the seal means that archaeologists are not sure whether it refers to the biblical prophet Isaiah or another person with the same name that lived during that period.

As noted by Mazar, the clay seal, or bullae, was one of the 34 discovered during the excavations carried out by Mazar at the base of the south wall of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

The seals, or bullae, were recovered in small Iron Age waste pits (1200-586 B.C.), outside the wall of what Mazar describes as a royal bakery, razed during the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem in 586 B.C.

Mazar further noted that the word ‘nvy’ was also visible on the seal, but archaeologists are uncertain as to what meaning the word may bear, suggesting that it could be a personal named making reference to another Isaiah, and not the prophet.

My Precious—Ancient Ring That Inspired Tolkien’s The Hobbit Found In The U.K.

My Precious—Ancient Ring That Inspired Tolkien’s The Hobbit Found In The U.K.

The ring that inspired Tolkien in writing the trilogy of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Hobbit’, exists and has behind its steps a mysterious story full of curses dating from Roman times.

During the Rule of the Roman Empire over Britain, elite citizens of the time flaunted their status by wearing peculiar rings.

Now, after looking at a set of Brancaster rings, which scientists have dated to the fourth and fifth centuries, researchers have found numerous clues about their owners, who lived during the last days of Roman rule over Britain.

As noted by the University of Newcastle, a Brancaster ring is a type of signet ring with a characteristic square or rectangular bezel, inscribed with characters or text. The rings are named after the Roman Fort and Norfolk village where the first example was discovered in the mid-19th century.

My Precious: This is the ancient gold ring, believed to have inspired JRR Tolkien

Experts discovered that the metal used in their construction, just as the images imprinted on them give off numerous details about their owners, who were members of high society in Britain.

One of the rings, in particular, the cursed Silvianus Ring is believed to have been the source and inspired J.R.R. Tolkien as he was writing the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The so-called Silvanius ring was discovered near Silchester, in Hampshire, England, in 1785. The Ring belonged to a member of a Roman high society called Silvianus but was stolen by a person named Senicianus, upon whom Silvianus called down a curse: ‘To the god Nodens: Silvianus has lost his ring and promises half its value to Nodens. Among those named Senecianus, let none enjoy health until he brings it back to the temple of Nodens.’

In a recent archaeological mission, experts from the universities of Oxford and Newcastle have gathered 54 rings that exist in the United Kingdom and cataloged them all for the first time. Most of the 54 rings were made from silver and only a small number of gold.

In addition to being used as jewelry, the rings were used in ancient times with wax to seal letters and other important documents.

The various rings are unique, mostly made of precious metal and engraved with different designs. Some bare the symbol of soldiers, lovers, and even emperors.

However, some rings feature evidence of incredible Roman Art, as experts have discovered that some rings have intricate designs such as dolphins and mythical sea creatures, as well as sea griffins which have been found frequently in Roman Art.

Speaking about the Rings, Dr. James Gerrard, senior lecturer in Roman archaeology at Newcastle, said: ‘The fifth century was a period of major upheaval and marked the start of the transition from Roman Empire to Anglo Saxon Britain. These rings and their inscriptions provide a glimpse of what Britain was like during these years and give an insight into the dress, beliefs, ideologies and education level of the elite at the time.

INSIDE ROBERT BIGELOW'S DECADES-LONG OBSESSION WITH UFOS

INSIDE ROBERT BIGELOW'S DECADES-LONG OBSESSION WITH UFOS

ufo-180359923-%5BConverted%5D.jpg

GETTY IMAGES

IN 1994, A Mormon family bought a 480-acre plot in in Utah’s Uintah Basin, thinking they’d get back to the land. But this particular land was weird. It came with too-large-thrice-over wolves that refused to die by bullet, cattle with their reproductive organs sucked clean out, and a multitude of UFOs, as they told the Deseret News in 1996. It was driving them bonkers.

Robert Bigelow saw their story. Today, the Nevada businessman is known for founding Bigelow Aerospace, which spun off a business to sell its expandable space habitats just last Tuesday. But in 1995, he had also founded something called the National Institute for Discovery Science, an organization built to research paranormal phenomena. Soon after reading the newspaper story, he took Skinwalker off the family’s hands, and his institute set up shop.

That, at least, is the story told in Hunt for the Skinwalker, a book that I downloaded in audio form one Friday night in January. Bigelow deactivated the National Institute for Discovery Science in 2004, after years of failing to capture the supposedly supernatural. But as the world recently discovered, he didn’t give up the cause. In December, a New York Times story revealed that Bigelow Aerospace had conducted a study on UFOs—for the Pentagon. I’d been interested in Bigelow’s anomalistic dealings since that article came out; thus, the audio book.

The Pentagon’s Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program officially ended in 2012. But similar work continues today—involving people from both the defunct Defense Department program and Bigelow’s dismantled paranormal enterprise. They have become part of a for-profit company: To The Stars Academy of Arts and Science, which launched in October 2017 to research and reverse-engineer UFOs, among other goals.

Bigelow has gotten his fingers into lots of private UFO pies. Even before Skinwalker, he helped initiate the UFO Research Coalition, which puts his UFO-hunting career at about 24 years old. Bigelow is not officially involved with To The Stars. But its aims, and its team, seem to line up with his past and his people. So I set off to try to understand that past.

ALL EIGHT HOURS and 42 minutes of audiobook downloaded, I got in my car at 5 a.m. the next day with my sister. Pointed toward Skinwalker Ranch, hoping for context and maybe something strange, we sped through the Rockies, trying to beat the ski traffic and a snowstorm. All the while, the staid voice of the book’s narrator described the alleged happenings at Skinwalker.

As my sister and I journeyed down I-70, the book’s authors—George Knapp, a journalist, and Colm Kelleher, former deputy administrator of Bigelow’s institute—presented the paranormal tales almost as matters of fact. Kelleher has a PhD in biochemistry, but his mindset was often anti-scientific. He took coincidences as meaningful; he aw-shucksed every time an “anomalous phenomenon” mysteriously evaded the cameras. The supposed point of Bigelow’s National Institute for Discovery Science was to get away from that kind of softness.

About four and a half hours and several hundred milligrams of caffeine in, I listened to a description of how instrument-bearing institute investigators witnessed a growing yellow light—or maybe a tunnel—from which a faceless black creature maybe emerged. I needed a break. Pausing the book, I pulled over at Rio Blanco Lake, a rare bit of water with an assemblage of red picnic tables. The lake, frozen, stretched to the scrub-covered buttes on the far shore. It was peaceful.

Then came the noises. Great metallic twangs, or thwangs, or something, that seemed to start here, no there, and rush across the landscape as if carried on an invisible wire.

They sounded like trebly light sabers. They sounded like alien spaceship chatter. Like maybe someone had pulled the power lines taut for miles and then plucked them with a giant finger.

“What is it?” I kept saying, deeply unnerved—not because I thought it was inexplicable but because I couldn’t explain it.

And then the lake’s ice cracked, the break spreading fast like a faultline in an action movie. The frozen water heaved itself into a new position.

With that, the noises explained themselves and stopped. We stood in the silence for a few seconds.

“That’s probably the weirdest thing that will happen all day,” my sister eventually said.

WE CONTINUED ON our way toward Skinwalker Ranch, where Bigelow’s people had, for years, tried to find that weirdest thing, every day. Researching UFOs seems a bit like gambling: You mostly lose, or break even, but the promise that you might hit jackpot is powerful. “The thing about UFOs that makes them so mysterious is that they disappear,” says historian Greg Eghigian, who is researching the global history of UFO sightings and alleged alien contact. “Not that they appear.” You just have to keep looking and hope they come back.

Toward the end of the book, the authors let us know that Bigelow abandoned studies at Skinwalker in the early 2000s. But he didn’t stop looking: In 2007, he got that Pentagon contract—some $22 million to study advanced aerial threats, including some that remain allegedly unidentified.

Around the same time, in 2008, Bigelow created a new company: Bigelow Advanced Aerospace Space Studies, a subsidiary of Bigelow Aerospace.

Archived versions of the Bigelow Aerospace Careers webpage say it “focuses on the identification, evaluation, and acquisition of novel and emerging future technologies worldwide as they specifically relate to spacecraft.” (Blair Bigelow, vice president of corporate strategy at Bigelow Aerospace, declined to comment.) Colm Kelleher—co-author of the Skinwalker book—was the company’s deputy administrator, according to his LinkedIn page.

Around the same time Bigelow created the new company, he also hitched a star to the Mutual UFO Network, a nonprofit that collects and investigates user-submitted reports of UFOs, according to MUFON’s executive director Jan Harzan. “If we were able to fund you so you could put investigators on the ground faster,” Harzan recalls Bigelow offering, “could you get better data on some of these reports?” Together, MUFON and Bigelow supported investigators’ fact-finding expeditions, and shared data—though for less than a year.

But that didn’t stop Bigelow from collecting UFO reports outside of the MUFON collaboration. The FAA, for instance, used to suggest pilots report UFO sightings directly to Bigelow Advanced Aerospace Space Studies. Christopher Rutkowski, who coordinates the Canadian UFO Survey, says Bigelow approached him at a MUFON conference in 2009. “He asked me to help him in his UFO-related efforts by alerting him and his team to any 'good' Canadian cases that needed onsite investigations,” he says. One of Bigelow’s people checked in with Rutkowski every few months following, for a year or two.

That person doesn’t call now. The FAA doesn’t instruct pilots to report to Bigelow. The Pentagon program is over. There’s no more MUFON collaboration. The National Institute for Discovery Science is kaput. So where’s a guy to get a bunch of UFO reports?

The newest answer might be To The Stars Academy—and its newly-launched “Community of Interest.” On this site, you can currently view two videos of alleged UFOs—the same footage embedded in the Times story about the Pentagon program—as well as a video interview with a Navy pilot who says he witnessed one of those events and a written report of the same encounter. In the future, the site aims to amass and analyze many more reports of anomalies.

Although a representative from To the Stars claims no affiliation with Bigelow, the overlap between its team and Bigelow’s is inarguable: Hal Puthoff, who was on the board of the National Institute for Discovery Science, is now the vice president of science and technology at To The Stars. Kelleher is now To The Stars’ biotech consultant. And Elizondo, who was reportedly in charge of the Pentagon program that contracted Bigelow’s company, is now To The Stars’ director of global security and special programs.

And if the gathered reports are public, Bigelow could check them out, same as anyone else. If Bigelow is as committed to ufology as his last two decades of work have suggested, he could do worse than striking a deal with this group.

WHEN MY SISTER and I arrived at Skinwalker Ranch (now owned not by the institute or Bigelow but by the mysterious Adamantium Real Estate (whoever that nerd is), we were numb to the claims of its strange happenings. To be clear, I don’t really believe in much. Not God, or miracles, or magical beasts. I don’t believe that anything “defies” the “laws of physics.”

I do believe that we probably misunderstand some laws of physics, that our knowledge is, in some cases, incomplete, or even drop-dead wrong. I believe there are things in the universe we don’t get yet, that our scientific explanations haven’t caught up to. But I also believe that they can. Anyway, I’d driven all the way to the Uintah Valley, and I was sure going to try to look for something strange in the sky. We found a legal gravel pull-off that looked down on the semi-martian land of Skinwalker, and stared at the sky, waiting.

I added an extra layer to my clothes, blew hot air into my gloves, and found a nearby rock suitable for sitting, surrounded by broken glass and scattering of half-smoked cigarettes. And so my sister and I sat, mock-gasping at the lights from low-flying planes.

And then the clouds, which had hung low all day, began to clear. The stars—some of them perhaps supporting life that almost certainly has not come here, but, you know, maybe—were crisp and clear. I turned Hunt for the Skinwalker back on, my phone’s speaker pulsing from my pocket.

We scanned the skies; we listened to the tall tales.

“It’s good out here,” I said to my sister. “But you were right about that ice.”

“What?” she said.

“That it was the weirdest thing that would happen all day.”

A Top-Secret US Military Base Will Melt Out of the Greenland Ice Sheet

A Top-Secret US Military Base Will Melt Out of the Greenland Ice Sheet

Planners thought it would stay buried in ice forever.

About 60 years ago, at the height of the Cold War, the US designed a network of top-secret mobile nuclear launch sites buried in the Greenland ice sheet to prepare for possible war with the Soviet Union. At Camp Century, which was part of Project Iceworm, soldiers lived in the ice, which enclosed the base so it wouldn’t be completely buried in snow.

Camp Century was shut down in 1967, and the site was abandoned as Project Iceworm wound down. Back then, military planners assumed the hazardous stuff buried at Camp Century—including diesel fuel, PCBs, and some radioactive coolant—would stay locked up in the Greenland ice sheet, essentially forever. But now Greenland is warming because of climate change. Dangerous contaminants threaten to re-emerge from the ice, potentially putting people in Greenland and maybe as far away as Arctic Canada (400 km offshore) at risk.

Camp Century isn’t the only US military installation abroad that’s increasingly threatened by climate change. A Pentagon report from earlier this year, for example, noted that half of all US bases worldwide could be at risk. But Project Iceworm is a useful case study, argues Jeff Colgan, associate professor of political science and international studies at Brown University, who’s studied this in detail. That’s partly because the question of who should take responsibility for Camp Century has become such a political hot potato. According to him, at this point it isn’t clear exactly who is responsible for cleaning it up.

Over the phone, Colgan described the secondary effects of climate change—like the release of dangerous substances, or infrastructure damage—as its “knock-on effects.” (He pointed to the release of hazardous materials in Texas after Hurricane Harvey as another example.) “It creates a whole new type of politics, and it’s becoming more important in a variety of ways.”

Colgan is author of a new paper in Global Environmental Politics that views the impact of climate change on military bases as not just an environmental problem, but as a political and diplomatic one.

Project Iceworm goes to show just how politically complicated these situations can be. Camp Century was the result of a legal treaty between Denmark and the US, since Greenland was a Danish colony at that time.

Motherboard contacted the US State Department to inquire about Camp Century, and was referred to the US Department of Defense. A Defense Department spokesperson then referred our query to the government of Denmark.

The Danish foreign ministry, which handles relations with the US and Greenland, referred Motherboard to the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS), an independent research institution under the Danish Ministry of Energy, Utilities and Climate. In a follow-up phone call, a ministry spokesperson said decisions around the cleanup would be made once the science is settled.

“It’s not a high priority. In fact it’s a barely known [issue] in Washington,” Colgan told me. “The only people who are really agitated [are in] Greenland, and they don’t have a lot of leverage.”

Scientists aren’t ignoring the problem. In 2016, a high-profile paper in Geophysical Research Letters predicted that Camp Century’s site could see primarily melting conditions by the year 2090, and described in detail all the hazardous stuff buried there. “It caused quite a reaction from scientists and the political system,” Flemming Christiansen, deputy director general of GEUS, told Motherboard in a phone interview, and it spurred them to study the site further.

GEUS has been monitoring the Greenland ice sheet for years, and is now tracking the Camp Century site specifically. In the summer of 2017, Christiansen said, a weather station was installed there, and scientists used radar last year to map what is locked up under the ice. (The map should be available later this year.) Climate data from Camp Century is publicly available online, although it will take some time to begin to notice longer-term trends.

Politicians, meanwhile, have yet to sort out exactly what to do about the threat posed by climate change to military installations abroad, each one governed by what Colgan calls “ad hoc” arrangements. Colgan noted that the US Pentagon, at least, does seem to appreciate the dangers of climate change. Of the hundreds of US bases overseas, “it’s unclear how many of them are at the frontlines of climate change, like Greenland,” he said, adding that other sites, like low-lying Pacific islands, are also certain to be impacted.

Meanwhile, Camp Century is melting out. “If there is something coming to the surface, you would like to know when this will happen,” Christiansen told me. Scientists are working on that part. Now it’s up to governments to come up with a plan.

Scientists say space aliens could hack our planet

Scientists say space aliens could hack our planet

New paper argues that extraterrestrials might beam 'contaminated' messages our way.

by Seth Shostak

With all the news stories these days about computer hacking, it probably comes as no surprise that someone is worried about hackers from outer space. Yes, there are now scientists who fret that space aliens might send messages that worm their way into human society — not to steal our passwords but to bring down our culture.

How exactly would they do that? Astrophysicists Michael Hippke and John Learned argue in a recent paper that our telescopes might pick up hazardous messages sent our way — a virus that shuts down our computers, for example, or something a bit like cosmic blackmail: “Do this for us, or we’ll make your sun go supernova and destroy Earth.” Or perhaps the cosmic hackers could trick us into building self-replicating nanobots, and then arrange for them to be let loose to chew up our planet or its inhabitants.

Mind you, making a small star like the sun go supernova would be a mind-boggling trick — one that would impress astrophysicists (if any were left). As for the nanobots, I figure the aliens need only wait a century or two, and we’ll make the little devils ourselves, without any help.

LIKE THREATENING NEANDERTHALS

It’s indisputable that space aliens, if they do exist, might not be friendly. But it’s hard to think of things that we could do for agile, technically sophisticated aliens that they couldn’t accomplish more easily on their own. Imagine modern humans threatening Neanderthals with nuclear war unless they washed our cars. Would that make any sense?

The astrophysicists also suggest that the extraterrestrials could show their displeasure (what did we do?) by launching a cyberattack. Maybe you’ve seen the 1996 film “Independence Day,” in which odious aliens are vanquished by a computer virus uploaded into their machinery. That’s about as realistic as sabotaging your neighbor’s new laptop by feeding it programs written for the Commodore 64.

Related

In other words, aliens that could muster the transmitter power (not to mention the budget) to try wiping us out with code are going to have a real compatibility problem. The Stuxnet virus that took out Iran’s enrichment centrifuges was designed to target a contemporary bit of software: the Windows operating system.

If these nasty aliens are more than 40 light-years away, they won’t know that we have personal computers, let alone which operating system they should target. If they’re more than 80 light-years away, they won’t know that we have computers of any kind.

Maybe they’ll try to disable our abacuses.

A DANGEROUS GIFT

It’s worth remarking that today’s SETI experiments — in which large antennas are used to search for signals from alien societies — are largely impervious to any of this chicanery. SETI receivers integrate incoming signals (which is to say, they average them) over seconds or minutes. That would turn any message into digital goo, and no pernicious content would remain. Yes, that’s a technical point, but I think it’s highly unlikely we’ll ever have computers susceptible to Klingon code.

Yet there is a way that messages from space might be disruptive. Extraterrestrials could simply give us some advanced knowledge — not as a trade, but as a gift. How could that possibly be a downer? Imagine: You’re a physicist who has dedicated your career to understanding the fundamental structure of matter. You have a stack of reprints, a decent position, and a modicum of admiration from the three other specialists who have read your papers. Suddenly, aliens weigh in with knowledge that’s a thousand years ahead of yours. So much for your job and your sense of purpose.

If humanity is deprived of the opportunity to learn things on its own, much of its impetus for novelty might evaporate. In a society where invention and discovery are written out of the script, progress and improvement would suffer.

Then again, aliens would likely have real trouble transmitting knowledge to us. In movies, extraterrestrials often communicate with us in colloquial English. But a real message from space is likely to be no more understandable than a digital TV signal would be to Guglielmo Marconi. An alien transmission is unlikely to be a Trojan horse — but it would at least tell us that there’s someone outside the gates.

Neanderthals were artists just like humans, and even understood symbolism

Neanderthals were artists just like humans, and even understood symbolism

BY MIHAI ANDREI

As early as 64,000 years ago, Neanderthals in today’s Spain were creating impressive cave paintings, showing that they were just as artistic and creative as humans.

The ladder shape composed of red horizontal and vertical lines (center left) dates to older than 64,000 years and was made by Neanderthals.

Essentially human

Neanderthals, our closest biological relatives, were extremely similar to us. They shared common behaviors, common characteristics, and even common territory to early humans. They were also much more sophisticated than most people give them credit for.

But they might have also shared something else with our ancestors, something which we consider fundamentally human: our ability to understand symbolism.

“The emergence of symbolic material culture represents a fundamental threshold in the evolution of humankind. It is one of the main pillars of what makes us human”, says Dirk Hoffmann of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. “Artefacts whose functional value lies not so much in their practical but rather in their symbolic use are proxies for fundamental aspects of human cognition as we know it.”

A team of researchers from the UK, Germany, Spain, and France analyzed carbonate samples from three cave sites in Spain: La Pasiega (north-eastern Spain), Maltravieso (western Spain) and Ardales (south-western Spain).

All three caves contain spectacular red or black cave paintings depicting animals, dots and geometric signs, as well as hand stencils, handprints and engravings.

These aren’t necessarily new findings, but for the first time, researchers have been able to prove that they must have been made by Neanderthals, since they were the only ones around when the cave paintings were made.

Three hand stencils (center right, center topm and top left). One has been dated to at least 66,000 years ago and must have been made by a Neanderthal.

The team used a dating technique that isn’t commonly employed in anthropology: Uranium-Thorium dating. This dating technique relies on analyzing the isotopic content of the two elements and dating the sample by calculating the decay of Uranium 234 into Thorium 230. The technique is widely used to date calcium carbonate materials such as stalactites or corals, but was only recently implemented to anthropology thanks to technological advancements. Radiocarbon technique, which is currently much more common, isn’t able to date back far enough.

The team dated the paintings to 64,000 years ago — 20,000 years before humans modern humans arrived in Europe. This means that Neanderthals were the artists behind the paintings.

“Our dating results show that the cave art at these three sites in Spain is much older than previously thought”, says team member Alistair Pike from the University of Southampton. “With an age in excess of 64,000 years it predates the earliest traces of modern humans in Europe by more than 20,000 years. The cave art must thus have been created by Neanderthals.”

“Dating cave art accurately and precisely, but without destroying it, has so far been difficult to accomplish”, adds Hoffmann. “Thanks to recent technical developments we can now obtain a minimum age for cave art using Uranium-Thorium (U-Th) dating of carbonate crusts overlying the pigments.”

Artistic thinking

This is the first time any evidence of a Neanderthal cave painting has been found — until now, this artform had been considered human and human alone. There has been some evidence that Neanderthals used body ornamentation around 40,000 to 45,000 years ago, but some researchers believed that they learned the idea from humans, a theory which was almost impossible to disprove. The only way to clearly show that Neanderthals came up with the idea on their own was to date their work to before they met humans — and that’s exactly what this study does.

Perforated shells have also bee found in cave sediments, dating to between 115,000 and 120,000 years.

Joint lead author Dr. Chris Standish, an archaeologist at the University of Southampton, said:

“This is an incredibly exciting discovery which suggests Neanderthals were much more sophisticated than is popularly believed.

“Our results show that the paintings we dated are, by far, the oldest known cave art in the world, and were created at least 20,000 years before modern humans arrived in Europe from Africa – therefore they must have been painted by Neanderthals.”

Neanderthals also dyed and decorated marine shells. Perforated shells were found in sediments in Cueva de los Aviones and date to between 115,000 and 120,000 years, indicating that their artistic practices can be traced even further back.

It’s also significant that this is not a one-off accident — paintings were found in three caves 700 km apart, indicating a long-standing tradition passed on from generation to generation. It’s quite possible that many other similar works of art still exist, but we just haven’t found them yet.

“This is certainly just the beginning of a new chapter in the study of ice age rock art”, says Gerd-Christian Weniger of the Foundation Neanderthal Museum Mettmann, one of the leaders of the Ardales excavations.

It’s intriguing to think about it, but this is convincing evidence that humans and Neanderthals shared the same artistic sense and the same ability for symbolic thinking. Neanderthals weren’t the brutes they’re often portrayed as — they were thinkers and artists just like our ancestors.

But this also raises an even more exciting possibility: since both humans and Neanderthals shared creative abilities, it’s possible that they both inherited them from a common ancestor. If this is the case, we might have to look even further — much further — down in history to find where these abilities first appeared.

“According to our new data Neanderthals and modern humans shared symbolic thinking and must have been cognitively indistinguishable”, concludes Joao Zilhao, team member from the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies in Barcelona and involved in both studies. “On our search for the origins of language and advanced human cognition we must therefore look much farther back in time, more than half a million years ago, to the common ancestor of Neanderthals and modern humans.”

The paper, U-Th dating of carbonate crusts reveals Neandertal origin of Iberian cave art, is due for publication in Science on Friday, 23 February 2018. DOI: 10.1126/science.aap7778.

New study links ancient cave drawings and the origin of language

New study links ancient cave drawings and the origin of language

BY TIBI PUIU

Humans first emerged 200,000 years ago but didn’t figure out how to use language until 100,000 years ago, scholars think. Now, an intriguing new study suggests that cave drawings had an important role to play in the evolution of language by familiarizing our ancestors with symbolism.

The Chauvet Cave paintings, dated at 30,000 to 28,000 BC, were once thought to be the oldest cave drawings. Here, we can find more than 1,000 paintings depicting lions or mammoths of unmatched sophistication. Credit: DRAC Rhone-Alpes, French Ministry of Culture.

Our species has had a knack for art from its humble beginnings. To this day, you can still find ancient cave art on virtually every continent except Antarctica. In some places, like South Africa, there are over a million drawings made inside caves. Drawing such as those found on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, where there are 35,400-year-old depictions of a babirusa, or pig-deer, once common in these valleys. The spectacular lions and rhinos of Chauvet Cave, in southeastern France, are commonly thought to be around 30,000 to 32,000 years old, and mammoth-ivory figurines found in Germany correspond to roughly the same time.

Writing in the journal Frontiers in Psychology, researchers from MIT argue that places Chauvet or Sulawesi acted like hotspots for language generation by offering the perfect environment to translate acoustics into drawings.

“Our research suggests that the cognitive mechanisms necessary for the development of cave and rock art are likely to be analogous to those employed in the expression of the symbolic thinking required for language,” says Cora Lesure, a linguist at MIT and one of the study’s authors.

Sound + pictures = language

Lesure and colleagues that the brain uses the same cognitive functions to transfer acoustic sounds to pictures as language. Linguists often frustratingly say that language doesn’t fossilize but it can leave artifacts — cave drawings, for instance. And in this context, our early ancestors used cave drawings less as means of artistic expression, as Picasso or van Gogh would, but rather more as a means of communication.

“Cave art was part of the package deal in terms of how homo sapiens came to have this very high-level cognitive processing,” says Miyagawa, a professor of linguistics at MIT. “You have this very concrete cognitive process that converts an acoustic signal into some mental representation and externalizes it as a visual.”

“I think it’s very clear that these artists were talking to one another,” Miyagawa says. “It’s a communal effort.”

In some caves, 90 percent of the drawings involve hoofed animals which could have been used to replicate the sound of hoofbeats. Many such drawings were found to be made in chambers where echoes and reverberation create sounds similar to hoof beats. On the other hand, drawings of felines, dots, and handprints were etched in quiet cave chambers. Such drawings could have been part of stories or rituals — scenarios that display properties of language like “action, objects, and modification.” Miyagawa suggests that “acoustically based cave art must have had a hand in forming our cognitive symbolic mind.”

[ALSO SEE] Oldest known words are 15,000 years old

At this point, this is still speculative work but what Miyagawa or Lesure are doing is starting a discussion with potentially huge ramification. The MIT linguists hope to inspire more work and further scrutiny of the syntax etched on the walls of ancient caves around the world. Hidden in these drawings are stories that reveal content that might one day lead us to the origins of language. In this respect, the holy grail would be finding cave art older than 100,000 years.

The dogfight over Area 51

MYSTERY: Two USAF jets were filmed near another unidentified craft over Area 51

UFO seekers spotted the fighter planes 'hurtling towards the triangular object' above a desert area in Nevada

By Jeff Farrell

This is the mysterious moment two US air force jets are seen "dogfighting" with an unknown craft in an area where there are believed to be UFOs.

The fighter planes are seen zipping through the sky in an apparent routine training mission over the top secret military base Area 51 in a desert area in Lincoln County, Nevada.

UFO seekers Tim Doyle and Tracey Su camped out some 12 miles away to snap pictures and videos of activity over its skies and didn't see anything unusual when the military aircraft soared above.

But when they later combed through their photos they spotted the third craft which they described as a "triangular" object which appeared to be battling the US fighter jets.

Their sighting piles more weight on the countless conspiracy theories that the top secret base is a hub of interactions between earthly beings and aliens.

The site is at the centre of the so-called Roswell incident where US scientists are believed to have examined aliens who apparently crash landed their flying disc into a ranch in an area in New Mexico.

Tim and Tracey camped out just outside Area 51 and filmed and snapped the comings and goings and activity in the sky there.

"Welcome to area 51," said Tim in one of his videos. "We're in front of the most mysterious and secretive military installation in the entire world.

"We're just here to look for lights in the sky," said Tim, "and if they're here we're going to find them."

A narrator on the video, by YouTubeChannel thirdphaseofmoon , says: "These guys are taking a lot of risk bringing this information to you and we're sharing the evidence."

The pair filmed hours of footage over several days including the US fighter jets zipping through the sky, but didn't see it as unusual.

"When we got home and started reviewing the pictures we noticed a third object" in the sky, said Tim.

"What in the world is this? It's looks like some kind of triangular unmanned drone, because it's definitely too small to have a person inside of it.

"And after looking at the pictures it definitely looks like the crafts are interacting with each other. It's like a three-plane dogfight."

Tim and Tracey's remarkable footage on YouTube has already been seized upon by conspiracy theorists that it is proof there is UFO activity in Area 51.

Chuku Marrero posted: "I know they are real they are with us ... Nevada is the centre."

Lori Roberson1 wrote: "Ufo's been round for so many years."

The US government has never revealed the purpose of the site in a remote area in the desert in Nevada.

The CIA only admitted for the first time in 2005 that the military base, which is north-west of Las Vegas, even existed.

Shining UFO is spotted over remote northern Norway and 'EXPLODES into two' as stunned onlookers watch before 'fading into dust'

Shining UFO is spotted over remote northern Norway and 'EXPLODES into two' as stunned onlookers watch before 'fading into dust'

  • The object was first seen above Bardufoss in northern Norway on Thursday afternoon and evening
  • It had a bright, white light which exploded into two butterfly shapes then faded into 'dust'
  • Stunned onlookers on the ground said they first mistook it for a chopper because it appeared so quickly
  • One, who was in a remote part of the mountains, said it appeared suddenly then 'turned' and went away
  • One possible explanation for the sighting is that it was Paz, a radar imaging satellite launched on Thursday
  • It was launched by Elon Musk's Falcon 9 Space X rocket on Thursday in California along with two others
  • Paz belongs to the Spanish Ministry of Defence and will orbit earth for 5 years taking weather pictures
  • Musk launched it with his two StarLink prototypes which will beam broadband internet around the world

A bright, white UFO has been spotted over a remote part of northern Norway.

The aircraft was seen by stunned onlookers in Bardufoss on Thursday afternoon. A short while later, it was seen again in 80 miles away in Tromsø.

It lingered until after sunset then exploded neatly into two parts before disappearing into dust, according to witnesses.

Perplexed locals shared photographs and videos of the structure as it hovered above them near the town of Tromsø on Thursday night.

Tarquin Millington-Drake of Frontier Travels told DailyMail.com how he witnessed the spectacle.

'We thought it was a chopper coming towards us - a very bright light which came over the mountain and headed toward us - then it turned and went past us.

The bright shining light appeared suddenly above Bardufoss in Norway on Thursday afternoon as stunned onlookers watched. Above is the view of it from Wolf Lodge where a group of tourists mistook it for a chopper

The stunning object appeared suddenly then 'turned' and went back over the valley as the group watched on in disbelief

Witnesses described how the object faded into 'dust' as it disappeared from view

Witnesses described how the object faded into 'dust' as it disappeared from view

'Then it seemed to explode but the explosion was very uniform and symmetrical like two butterfly explosions either side of the light.

'It then seemed to turn and go away but no longer as one bright light - just bright dust that faded,' he said.

Mr. Millington-Drake watched it from the Wolf Lodge, a remote hideaway in Bardufoss where guests have up-close experiences with wolves.

He and other guests were gathered around a fire outside waiting for the northern lights when the UFO appeared.

Stunning photographs from the lodge show the group watching, stunned, as the UFO hovered above them, far outshining the stars.

'We assumed it was some special event laid on but the luxury Wolf Lodge but when our hosts starting taking photos it became clear that was not the case.

'It veered away from coming directly from us and just went across the valley.

'By now we were all watching intently and then suddenly it seemed to explode with those butterfly shaped wings.

The sightings were in northeast Norway on Thursday

'It slowed dramatically, now the bright light was more subdued and the light from the explosion joined to form an amoeba-like circle of light which then seemed to turn away from us and then slowly faded totally.

'It seems nobody in Bardufoss knows what it was.

'There is a big military base there but still no definitive theories from anyone.'

So far the only explanation for the sighting is that it could have been Paz, a radar imaging satellite which was launched on Thursday from Elon Musk's Falcon 9.

Musk's Tesla launched it on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Defence. The  }will orbit earth 15 times a day for five-and-a-half years taking photographs.

It was launched in California on Thursday along with two Musk's StarLink, two prototype satellites whose later versions will beam broadband internet anywhere in the world.

SpaceX, Musk's company which launched them, did not respond to DailyMail.com's requests for comment about the Norway sighting on Friday.

SectureTeam10 is one of the most viewed YouTube channels, with over 785,000 people subscribing to its conspiracy videos.

But the channel has come under fire, as Lions Ground, a rival channel, claims that it has been intentionally fooling its viewers.

According to Lions Ground, SecureTeam10 has been raking in an estimated £600 ($745) a day by posting fake videos that 'outsmart UFO believers.'

Lots of people were sceptical of their latest claims, with many saying the footage showed a high speed boat.

The Google satellite images were compiled in a video by Tyler Glockner, known for uploading images of UFO sightings to his YouTube channel Secureteam10.

Whoever created the craft has a 'main foothold in designing aircraft engines that are widely used in civilian and military aviation', Mr Glockner claimed.

'What you're seeing is a very secretive object... I haven't been able to work out what it is', he said.

More than 400,000 people viewed the video which shows a series of screen shots from Google Earth.

'It is no public aircraft that has been disclosed', Mr Glockner claimed.

'You can see that this thing looks like a hypersonic aircraft or spacecraft'.

The shape is similar to the SR-72 hypersonic plane - which is set to be a strike and reconnaissance aircraft that tops Mach 6, writes Daily Star.

White Settlers Buried the Truth About the Midwest’s Mysterious Mound Cities

White Settlers Buried the Truth About the Midwest’s Mysterious Mound Cities

Pioneers and early archaeologists credited distant civilizations, not Native Americans, with building these sophisticated complexes

SMITHSONIAN.COM

Around 1100 or 1200 A.D., the largest city north of Mexico was Cahokia, sitting in what is now southern Illinois, across the Mississippi River from St. Louis. Built around 1050 A.D. and occupied through 1400 A.D., Cahokia had a peak population of between 25,000 and 50,000 people. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Cahokia was composed of three boroughs (Cahokia, East St. Louis, and St. Louis) connected to each other via waterways and walking trails that extended across the Mississippi River floodplain for some 20 square km. Its population consisted of agriculturalists who grew large amounts of maize, and craft specialists who made beautiful pots, shell jewelry, arrow-points, and flint clay figurines.

The city of Cahokia is one of many large earthen mound complexes that dot the landscapes of the Ohio and Mississippi River Valleys and across the Southeast. Despite the preponderance of archaeological evidence that these mound complexes were the work of sophisticated Native American civilizations, this rich history was obscured by the Myth of the Mound Builders, a narrative that arose ostensibly to explain the existence of the mounds. Examining both the history of Cahokia and the historic myths that were created to explain it reveals the troubling role that early archaeologists played in diminishing, or even eradicating, the achievements of pre-Columbian civilizations on the North American continent, just as the U.S. government was expanding westward by taking control of Native American lands.

Today it’s difficult to grasp the size and complexity of Cahokia, composed of about 190 mounds in platform, ridge-top, and circular shapes aligned to a planned city grid oriented five degrees east of north. This alignment, according to Tim Pauketat, professor of anthropology at the University of Illinois, is tied to the summer solstice sunrise and the southern maximum moonrise, orientating Cahokia to the movement of both the sun and the moon. Neighborhood houses, causeways, plazas, and mounds were intentionally aligned to this city grid. Imagine yourself walking out from Cahokia’s downtown; on your journey you would encounter neighborhoods of rectangular, semi-subterranean houses, central hearth fires, storage pits, and smaller community plazas interspersed with ritual and public buildings. We know Cahokia’s population was diverse, with people moving to this city from across the midcontinent, likely speaking different dialects and bringing with them some of their old ways of life.

The largest mound at Cahokia was Monks Mound, a four-terraced platform mound about 100 feet high that served as the city’s central point. Atop its summit sat one of the largest rectangular buildings ever constructed at Cahokia; it likely served as a ritual space.

In front of Monks Mound was a large, open plaza that held a chunk yard to play the popular sport of chunkey. This game, watched by thousands of spectators, was played by two large groups who would run across the plaza lobbing spears at a rolling stone disk. The goal of the game was to land their spear at the point where the disk would stop rolling. In addition to the chunk yard, upright marker posts and additional platform mounds were situated along the plaza edges. Ridge-top burial mounds were placed along Cahokia’s central organizing grid, marked by the Rattlesnake Causeway, and along the city limits.

Cahokia was built rapidly, with thousands of people coming together to participate in its construction. As far as archaeologists know, there was no forced labor used to build these mounds; instead, people came together for big feasts and gatherings that celebrated the construction of the mounds.

The splendor of the mounds was visible to the first white people who described them. But they thought that the American Indian known to early white settlers could not have built any of the great earthworks that dotted the midcontinent. So the question then became: Who built the mounds?

Early archaeologists working to answer the question of who built the mounds attributed them to the Toltecs, Vikings, Welshmen, Hindus, and many others. It seemed that any group—other than the American Indian—could serve as the likely architects of the great earthworks. The impact of this narrative led to some of early America’s most rigorous archaeology, as the quest to determine where these mounds came from became salacious conversation pieces for America’s middle and upper classes. The Ohio earthworks, such as Newark Earthworks, a National Historic Landmark located just outside Newark, OH, for example, were thought by John Fitch (builder of America’s first steam-powered boat in 1785) to be military-style fortifications. This contributed to the notion that, prior to the Native American, highly skilled warriors of unknown origin had populated the North American continent.

This was particularly salient in the Midwest and Southeast, where earthen mounds from the Archaic, Hopewell, and Mississippian time periods crisscross the midcontinent. These landscapes and the mounds built upon them quickly became places of fantasy, where speculation as to their origins rose from the grassy prairies and vast floodplains, just like the mounds themselves. According to Gordon Sayre (The Mound Builders and the Imagination of American Antiquity in Jefferson, Bartram, and Chateaubriand), the tales of the origins of the mounds were often based in a “fascination with antiquity and architecture,” as “ruins of a distant past,” or as “natural” manifestations of the landscape.

When William Bartram and others recorded local Native American narratives of the mounds, they seemingly corroborated these mythical origins of the mounds. According to Bartram’s early journals (Travels, published in 1928) the Creek and the Cherokee who lived around mounds attributed their construction to “the ancients, many ages prior to their arrival and possessing of this country.” Bartram’s account of Creek and Cherokee histories led to the view that these Native Americans were colonizers, just like Euro-Americans. This served as one more way to justify the removal of Native Americans from their ancestral lands: If Native Americans were early colonizers, too, the logic went, then white Americans had just as much right to the land as indigenous peoples.µ

The creation of the Myth of the Mounds parallels early American expansionist practices like the state-sanctioned removal of Native peoples from their ancestral lands to make way for the movement of “new” Americans into the Western “frontier.” Part of this forced removal included the erasure of Native American ties to their cultural landscapes.

In the 19th century, evolutionary theory began to take hold of the interpretations of the past, as archaeological research moved away from the armchair and into the realm of scientific inquiry. Within this frame of reference, antiquarians and early archaeologists, as described by Bruce Trigger, attempted to demonstrate that the New World, like the Old World, “could boast indigenous cultural achievements rivaling those of Europe.” Discoveries of ancient stone cities in Central America and Mexico served as the catalyst for this quest, recognizing New World societies as comparable culturally and technologically to those of Europe.

But this perspective collided with Lewis Henry Morgan’s 1881 text Houses and House-life of the American Aborigines. Morgan, an anthropologist and social theorist, argued that Mesoamerican societies (such as the Maya and Aztec) exemplified the evolutionary category of “Middle Barbarism”—the highest stage of cultural and technological evolution to be achieved by any indigenous group in the Americas. By contrast, Morgan said that Native Americans located in the growing territories of the new United States were quintessential examples of “Stone Age” cultures—unprogressive and static communities incapable of technological or cultural advancement. These ideologies framed the archaeological research of the time.

In juxtaposition to this evolutionary model there was unease about the “Vanishing Indian,” a myth-history of the 18th and 19th centuries that depicted Native Americans as a vanishing race incapable of adapting to the new American civilization. The sentimentalized ideal of the Vanishing Indian—who were seen as noble but ultimately doomed to be vanquished by a superior white civilization—held that these “vanishing” people, their customs, beliefs, and practices, must be documented for posterity. Thomas Jefferson was one of the first to excavate into a Native American burial mound, citing the disappearance of the “noble” Indians—caused by violence and the corruption of the encroaching white civilization—as the need for these excavations. Enlightenment-inspired scholars and some of America’s Founders viewed Indians as the first Americans, to be used as models by the new republic in the creation of its own legacy and national identity.

During the last 100 years, extensive archaeological research has changed our understanding of the mounds. They are no longer viewed as isolated monuments created by a mysterious race. Instead, the mounds of North America have been proven to be constructions by Native American peoples for a variety of purposes. Today, some tribes, like the Mississippi Band of Choctaw, view these mounds as central places tying their communities to their ancestral lands. Similar to other ancient cities throughout the world, Native North Americans venerate their ties to history through the places they built.

WE JUST BEAMED A SIGNAL AT SPACE ALIENS. WAS THAT A BAD IDEA?

WE JUST BEAMED A SIGNAL AT SPACE ALIENS. WAS THAT A BAD IDEA?

In a valley eight miles southeast of the Norwegian city of Tromsø, a radar antenna has just transmitted a short bit of radio programming to potential alien listeners: some specially composed electronic music and a tutorial about geometry and the use of binary numbers.

This isn’t the usual approach to the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI). Ordinarily, scientists engaged in SETI use such antennas with the hope of hearing a signal that would have been broadcast tens, hundreds, or even thousands of years ago. So far, no dice. But at least SETI offers the chance of short-term success. It’s like a slot machine that’s been stubbornly ungenerous despite having been fed a ton of quarters. There’s always a chance the next coin will trigger a jackpot. SETI could succeed before tomorrow.

That’s not true with the Tromsø transmission. It’s an example of active SETI, or what some scientists call METI (for messaging to extraterrestrial intelligence). The idea is simple: Send a signal that would alert aliens we’re here, and listen for a reply.

Obviously, patience is required. The Tromsø broadcast was beamed to one of the nearest star systems believed to have an Earth-like planet. The target, GJ 273, or more familiarly Luyten’s Star, is a runty red dwarf located 12 light-years from our solar system. Since radio waves travel at the speed of light, we’ll have to wait more than two decades before looking for a reply.

Despite the lack of immediate gratification, Doug Vakoch, founder of the San Francisco-based nonprofit METI International, has argued that if we really intend to prove that humans have cosmic company, we need to step up to the plate and take the initiative. He envisions the Tromsø transmission as a first step down a yellow brick road that eventually leads to signaling thousands or millions of star systems.

Trying to find aliens by pinging only one star system is a long shot. But although the broadcast from Norway is unlikely to provoke a response by any Luytenians, you can be sure it will provoke plenty of Earthlings.

That’s because METI is controversial. To begin with, what do you say to someone you’ve never met, and who’s a member of a different species? This has been batted about at more than a few conferences, and much of the conversation centers on whether we should show our bad side. Do we tell aliens that we engage in war, threaten our environment, and chow down on other critters? Personally, I don’t get too exercised about these discussions. Such concerns — while of great importance to us — are likely to be mere curiosities to the aliens.

But the aspect of METI that really inflames people (including some in the SETI community and even celebrated physicist Stephen Hawking) is the possibility that sending signals skyward may expose us to an existential danger. Suppose Luytenians do exist, and they’re unfriendly. If we tip our hand with a broadcast — no matter what its content — they might respond with a fleet of interstellar missiles to take us out. Bummer.

Frankly, it’s hard to think of any credible reason why aliens would do this. But why take the chance? My answer is twofold. To begin with, we’ve been broadcasting into space with high-powered transmitters (radar and TV) for more than a half-century now. Sure, those signals aren’t easy to detect out there in space — at least for someone with our level of technology. But for a society a century or two ahead of us, it would be trivial. And if the aliens are not at least that advanced, they simply won’t have those interstellar missiles.

So that’s point one, and it’s a doozy. Our hand has already been tipped.

But there’s something else, often lost in the discussion. Limiting strong transmissions skyward will straitjacket our descendants, not just in their efforts to do active SETI but for many other projects that might require beamed radio signals. If we want to map the outer regions of our solar system (to locate errant comets), we’ll need to use radars that are much more powerful than the ones we have today. If we envision having interstellar probes, signaling will be needed to keep in touch.

Let’s face it, it’s impossible to know what our great-great-grandchildren will find interesting or worthwhile to do. But telling them to never, ever aim a transmitter skyward is akin to telling them to never colonize Mars because, after all, there may be some indigenous microbes under the soil and it’s their planet.

Personally, I hope the Luytenians get in touch.

Dr. Seth Shostak is a senior astronomer at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California.

Apollo 15 Video Shows Sound In Space, But Sound In A Vacuum Is Impossible!!! UFO Sighting News Video.

Screen%2BShot%2B2018-02-24%2Bat%2B7.10.02%2BPM.png

Date of sighting: Feb 2018
Location of sighing: Earths Moon
Mission: Apollo 15

When Streetcap1 finds something, you can bet your life that its got some juicy meat to it. He found an Apollo 15 mission video with audio that lets you hear the astronaut hammering! Thats impossible in the vacuum of space! Awesome find by Streetcap1. I've known him for over 5 years and can vouch for him.

Scott C. Waring-Taiwan

Streetcap1 states:

This is from Apollo 15 NASA footage. If you did Physics at school or college you will know that sound cannot travel in a vacuum. Yet we can hear the Astronaut's Hammer Strokes in this clip. Space is a vacuum = No Air. Quote ' In Space no-one can hear you scream.' All Astronaut communication is through headset radio. Vibrations cannot travel through the vacuum even to the astronaut's radio, so the hammer strokes should be silent, yet we can hear them! Conclusion: Either there is Air on the Moon or NASA faked the Apollo 15 program. SC1.

FBI CONFIRM ALIENS EXIST – RELEASED DECLASSIFIED UFO DOCUMENTS & FILES – WHO IS THE REAL THREAT TO EARTH?

EDIT (April 2013): The FBI have recently published a blog post confirming that they never investigated the claims made in the now-famous Hottel memo. The FBI also made it clear that the memo is not related to the Roswell incident of 1947 in any way, the document relates to a completely seperate incident which remains unexplained to this day.

Additionally, recent attention has been drawn to the FBI document which confirms that a UFO exploded above Utah (see video below). Dr. Bruce Maccabee has studied the FBI files extensively and concludes that there is an extraterrestrial presence engaging the human race, … and just in time for Sirius and CHOD (Citizen’s Hearing On Disclosure).

There’s been a whole lot of buzz going on in the UFO and alien community over the past few years with UFO sightings and public interest increasing tenfold over the past ten years. First the UK’s Ministry of Defense (MoD) decided to carry out a phased release of their official UFO documents leading up to 2012, NSA then made their files public and accessible online and now the FBI have started releasing their documents too.

FBI Documents – UFO’s & Aliens

Although there’s some interesting information there, controversy has arisen particularly in relation to a document written by FBI special agent Guy Hottel in 1950 who claimed to have received information from a US Air Force investigator about a UFO found in New Mexico. The document claims that three bodies about three feet tall, dressed in a very fine metallic cloth and bandaged up in a way similar to the method that test pilots use were recovered from the crash.

Whilst many people are claiming that this document proves the existence of extraterrestrial life and it IS an official FBI document it has been suggested (decades ago) by Bruce Maccabee that the document could also relate to a hoax originally perpetrated by Silas Newton. Officially there is no explanation for the document and the FBI have placed it under the perhaps appropriate subcategory Unexplained Phenomenon (See edit at beginning of article).

However, the document was actually presented as evidence to Dr Steven Greer for the purpose of the Disclosure Project, a non-profit organization that has collected over 120 hours of witness testimony from government and military officials, astronauts, pilots, etc who have all confirmed their will to testify under oath before congress that what they are saying about the UFO phenomena is the truth.

* See the official explanation by Sergeant First Class Clifford Stone, for the Guy Hottel memo, in the column to the right.

One document contained within the FBI files provides a detailed illustration of a flying disc which is, rather coincidentally, identical to the several discs that can be seen on the Youtube video of NASA’s infamous tether overload incident. The disc even had the triangular notch in it – after NASA told us that the anomalies on the video footage were most likely ice or dust particles. When this excuse didn’t fly too well they claimed they were camera anomalies – NASA gave two different conflicting explanations.

Alien UFO SightingsALIENS DID IT!!

FBI Documents – Cattle Mutilation

The FBI also released documents in relation to cattle mutilations which have been strongly attributed to alleged UFO and alien activity whereby organs and blood had been removed with surgical precision. Several theories have been put forward to explain the cattle mutilation phenomenon such as other animals feeding on the carcass while it’s fresh, biological warfare experiments and even satanic occultism which was rife throughout the prison system. However, there remains absolutely no evidence to this day, even though cattle mutilations still take place. What we do know is that many of the animals seem to have been dropped from a great height and black helicopters are often seen. Some kind of belt, harness or strap was also found at one of the cattle mutilation sites which may have been used to either lift up or release the cow(s). It’s not only animals that are being mutilated though, there are actually also many human mutilations taking place too.

NSA Documents – Extra Terrestrial Intelligence

Contained within the NSA’s archive is a document which appears to relate to 29 encoded messages received by extraterrestrial intelligence. Whilst this document stormed the internet amongst believers who claimed it also proved the existence of intelligent alien life, several skeptics came to the conclusion that the document is, in fact, just a staff training exercise. However, government whistleblowers have come forward to say that signals, such as the ‘wow signal’ have been received and documented numerous times by Harvard University but have been ignored because there were no furthers anomalies when those regions were scanned again. Harvard University confirmed with researchers that the claims were genuine.

MoD Documents – Unexplained

Whilst the Ministry of Defense’s documents hold witness testimony but seemingly very little else information on the subject, former MoD employee Nick Pope believes that between 5-10% of sightings cannot be explained in conventional terms and that more investigations are required in the interest of national security.

Pope also claims to have had a close-up photograph of a UFO on the wall of his office when he worked for MoD. In a UFO documentary entitled The Day Before Disclosure Nick Pope attempted to debunk several incidents before going on to state that an extraterrestrial presence is undoubtedly and unequivocally engaging the human race.

* Nick Pope investigated UFO reports during his time working for MoD.

In addition, the MoD confirmed that they found evidence of the existence of MJ-12 under a secret stamp but could attain no further information on the subject. The MJ-12 documents were also confirmed by Stanton Friedman’s interview with Charlette Mann, who confirmed that her grandfather was involved in a UFO crash retrieval involving alien bodies as early as 1941. Mann claimed her grandfather had told her that he had seen unusual small bodies that either had as skin, or were covered in, some kind of material that looked like aluminium tin-foil. Is it just a coincidence that the Guy Hottel memo also describes the same details?

Despite this new information the Majestic-12 documents remain labelled a ‘hoax’ by the FBI yet the Guy Hottel memo has not been labelled a hoax. It has been confirmed by other government whistleblowers, such as Command Sergeant Major Robert O’ Dean, that Majestic-12 is now called PI40 and that there are now 36, or possibly more, members.

Note: information regarding this evidence seems to be rapidly disappearing from the internet.

The Disclosure Movement

Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon, stated that certain freedoms could be accessed if a protective layer of secrecy could be stripped away. He also stated that him and Buzz Aldrin were being watched by someone much more technologically advanced than us all the time that they were on the moon and that there was no question of a space station before later denying ever saying it.

In addition, Edgar Mitchell (the 6th man on the moon) says he knows we have been visited and that extraterrestrial life exists. There are over four-hundred government and military officials that took part in Steven Greer’s Disclosure Project plus several more who are not taking part but are taking part in the disclosure movement.

Edgar Mitchell has confirmed that he met with high-up government officials at the Pentagon who confirmed that the extraterrestrial presence is real, an alien spacecraft really did crash at Roswell in 1947 and the government has been covering up the evidence for decades. When questioned as to who was keeping the information secret the government officials stated that they did not know but it was obviously a transnational covert group who operate amongst the highest echelons of government.

Command Sergeant Major Robert O’ Dean confirmed that this meeting had taken place in a basement room of the Pentagon nicknamed ‘the tank’. According to Colonel Philip J Corso’s books, The Day After Roswell and Dawn Of A New Age, and according to Corso’s testimony, it was in the basement of the Pentagon that Corso gained access to the Roswell file.

Robert O’ Dean had Cosmic Top Secret Clearance (38 levels above top secret) and claims that, whilst working for NATO, he saw a classified document entitled The Assessment which explained the UFO/EBE presence in great detail and theorized that the extraterrestrials have been around for hundreds, if not thousands, of years and that man’s evolution may have even been a result of intervention by the extraterrestrials who are apparently knowledgeable on the subjects of genetic engineering and cloning.

Remote Viewing

In addition to the above, the FBI have many more documents relating to the alleged UFO/EBE presence including one document containing insightful information that a remote viewer had channeled during the time of the remote viewing experiments. The information seems to corroborate that from other official government whistleblower testimony, including that of Lt. Colonel Philip J Corso.

Corso (and many others) claim that the extraterrestrials have developed technology that interfaces with coherent thought and that they wore head-bands which allowed them to become an integrated part of their spacecraft – in other words, they navigated their spacecraft simply by thought.

The information in the FBI document states:

“A very serious situation may develop at any time with regard to the ‘flying saucers’. If one of those should be attacked, the plane will almost certainly be destroyed. In the public mind this might create near panic and international suspicion.”

The memo also states:

1. Parts of the discs carry crews, others are under remote control.

2. Their mission is peaceful. The visitors contemplate settling on this plane.

3. These visitors are human-like but much larger in size.”
Eventually the document states:

4. They are not excarnate Earth people, but come from their own world.

5. They do not come from any ‘planets’ as we use the word but from an etheric planet which interpenetrates with our own and is not perceptible to us.

6. The bodies of the visitors, and the craft also, automatically materialize on entering the vibratory rate of our dense matter.

7. The disks possess a type of radiant energy, or a ray, which will easily disintegrate any attacking ship. They re-enter the etheric at will, and so simply disappear from our vision, without trace.

8. The region from which they come is NOT the ‘astral plane’ but corresponds to the Lokas or Talas. Students of esoteric matters will understand these terms.

9. They probably cannot be reached by radio, but probably can be by radar, if a signal system can be devised for that.”

Could the fact that the aliens allegedly communicate by telepathy and use thought to control their craft be the real reason for the remote viewing experiments in order to find out where the visitors were from?

Despite the fact that the public were told there was no conclusive evidence to suggest that remote viewing was useful, Nick Pope claimed that he had seen surprisingly successful remote viewing experiments being carried out first-hand himself.

Weaponization Of Space

Whilst the Disclosure project offers very little actual smoking-gun evidence (even over 10 years later), we need to remember that there are plans for the weaponization of space which Dr. Greer and all other participants of the Disclosure project seem to oppose. There is over 120 hours of highly compelling testimony from massively prestigious, highly reputable and credible government witnesses, people who we have trusted (and who have earned our trust) to have their fingers on the nuclear trigger; people such as Dan Salter, NRO (National Reconnaissance Office)who claims to have direct knowledge of a worldwide organization called ACIO (Advanced Contact Intelligence Organization) that was set up specifically to communicate with extraterrestrial civilizations.

As noted as part of Disclosure project testimony, when Mikhail Gorbachev was asked on CNN whether they should stop using weapons in space Mikhail’s wife stepped in and said “No, I don’t think we should ban nuclear weapons in space because of alien spacecraft!”.

Her statement is ambiguous and can be taken either way.

Did she mean that alien spacecraft are being used to propose an opposition to the weaponization of space? Or did she mean that we need to keep nuclear weapons as defense against alien spacecraft?

Many officials testified to the fact that UFO’s had been shutting down equipment at secret nuclear installations and that they are concerned that we may take nuclear weapons into space, in which case, the aliens may need to retaliate.

It was also claimed that the aliens are concerned that we may be on the brink of destroying ourselves – Earth is a precious resource for the extraterrestrials who are interested in Earth’s magnetic field which they can use to maneuver and stay aloft according to Wang Sichao of China’s Purple Mountain Observatory who confirmed that the observatory had observed ET craft on numerous occasions.
So, are the aliens a threat to us or are we a threat to the aliens?

Archeologists May Have Proof of Existence of Biblical Isaiah

Archeologists May Have Proof of Existence of Biblical Isaiah

Finding the Arks of Noah and the Covenant are still on many bucket lists but you may soon be able to cross off “evidence of the existence of Isaiah.”

“We appear to have discovered a seal impression, which may have belonged to the prophet Isaiah, in a scientific, archaeological excavation.”

In a statement in the Biblical Archaeology Review (with photos), archaeologist Dr. Eilat Mazar announced that she and her team of researchers found a portion of a 2,700-year-old stamped clay seal at what was once the location of a royal bakery near the Temple Mount compound in Jerusalem. No, there’s no mention of the bakery in the Hebrew Bible or the Old Testament, but there’s plenty about Isaiah – an entire book bearing his name and believed by scholars to have been written by one person, most likely named Isaiah, who is regarded by both Jews and Christians as one of the leading religious prophets.

The Temple Mount

However, like today, there were probably a lot of Isaiahs around. The biblical Isaiah was noted for counseling and aiding King Hezekiah in his quest to protect the Kingdom of Judah from an Assyrian invasion during the 8th century BCE. That link plays an important part in determining if this seal belonged to the prophet Isaiah, according to Dr. Mazar.

“We found the eighth-century B.C.E. seal mark that may have been made by the prophet Isaiah himself only 10 feet away from where we earlier discovered the highly-publicized bulla of King Hezekiah of Judah.”

That bulla or clay seal was also discovered by Mazar in 2015. It’s close proximity to the seal of Hezekiah might have sealed the identity of the new seal … if it were whole and undamaged. Unfortunately, there’s some missing pieces to the seal and the story. While it definitely has an inscription that reads
l’Yesha’yah[u] (Belonging to Isaiah), the next line has some characters missing.

“Because the bulla has been slightly damaged at the end of the word nvy, it is not known if it originally ended with the Hebrew letter aleph, which would have resulted in the Hebrew word for ‘prophet’ and would have definitively identified the seal as the signature of the prophet Isaiah.”

Dr. Eilat Mazar

While Dr. Mazar feels pretty strongly that close counts in horseshoes, hand grenades and biblical seals, others aren’t so sure. The Times of Israel reports Israeli epigrapher (one who studies inscriptions) Dr. Haggai Misgav thinks that the seal would have been tied to a “sack of goods” that was not important enough to carry a notation that the owner was a prophet.

“But as always there is no shortage of those who jump on the finds with cries of, ‘Hurray, we have proven the Bible.’”

Perhaps he would believe the seal’s authenticity if it was on a sack of bagels and challah from the royal bakery.

omega.jpg?auto=format&fit=max&h=1080&ixlib=php-1.1.0&q=65&w=1920&s=cc5672632a2855d5f0befcc7ad5a438b

Jetstream_-_Rossby_Waves_-_N_hemisphere.svg_.png?auto=format&fit=max&h=1080&ixlib=php-1.1.0&q=65&w=1920&s=6a348a57bcc7714e0cc137306577a457
