Open Minds UFO Radio: Nick Pope was in charge of the British Ministry of Defence’s UFO desk from 1991 to 1994. It was his job to officially investigate UFO reports, and although he was skeptical at first, the reports convinced him of the serious nature of the phenomenon. He has been an advocate for the serious investigation of UFO sightings ever since.

Recently, he co-wrote a book on the Rendlesham Forest UFO Incident, Encounter at Rendlesham Forest,  with two of the main witnesses, John Burroughs and Jim Penniston. This case involved multiple military witnesses seeing UFOs outside of two US Air Force bases in the UK, on lease from the British military. The events took place over several days during the holiday season of 1980. Controversy continues to surround the incident and Pope’s new book as well.

We talk to Pope about the book, the controversy, and his views on some of the most important UFO stories of the year.

1) UFO spotted hovering over iceberg in eastern Canada

An eyewitness claimed to have spotted a white object spinning and shape-shifting above the sea during an excursion to Salvador, Newfoundland.

2) US Army Air Force fighter jet destroys giant 'alien monster' in desert

A video uploaded to YouTube purports to to show the moment a fighter jet bombs a bizarre, throbbing jellyfish-like object in New Mexico, in the United States.

3) UFO whizzes past CCTV camera on darkened industrial estate

In this video, a bright, white object can be seen hurtling through the air at breakneck pace.  It was recorded on a CCTV camera on an industrial site in Prokopyevsky, Russia.

4) UFO attacks Taliban camp in Afghanistan

This clip shows a triangular shaped airborne object open fire on an insurgent position. Explosions can be seen and a huge plume of smoke soon rises up in to the sky.

5) Bizarre 'rotating' object spotted over London

A series of photographs showed a black, rotating object complete with a light in the skies above the capital.  It later floated off in the direction of Highbury and Islington.

6) Mysterious UFO 'attempts to communicate with stunned deer'

Stills from a night-time 'deer-cam' showed two parallel beams of light in the background behind a startled deer. Camera owner EDith Shattles said: "It was something I've never seen before."

7) Bizarre triangular objects spotted flying in formation over Texas

Plane spotter Steve Douglass saw the craft alongside two others and took a photo - moments after claiming to have listened in to a conversation between two pilots.

8) Amateur photographer snaps mystery 'aircraft' streaking across the sky in Cornwall

Granddad Michael Potter photographed the 'blazing triangular shape' above the seaside holiday resort of Mounts Bay. He said: "The photo hasn't been photo-shopped or tampered with, so what is it the mysterious object?"

9) Bizarre UFO spotted by robot on surface of MARS

The 'spacecraft complete with vapour trail' was photographed by an unmanned Nasa rover at work on the surface of the Red Planet.

10) UFO spotted above airport causes flights to be cancelled and delayed

The object was spotted on radars at Germany's Bremen Airport but despite a police helicopter being scrambled, nothing was found.

An ancient encampment discovered near the prehistoric monument could rewrite British history.

The earliest settlement ever found at the site, the Mesolithic 'Blick Mead' encampment is located about a mile and a half from Stonehenge and dates back to 4,000 BC.

Archaeologists exploring the site, which is believed to have been occupied by hunter gatherers returning to the British Isles after the last Ice Age, discovered signs of feasting such as burnt flints and the remains of giant bulls called aurochs which are now extinct.

"British pre-History may have to be rewritten," said archaeologist David Jacques who made the discovery. "This is the latest dated Mesolithic encampment ever found in the UK."

"Blick Mead site connects the early hunter gatherer groups returning to Britain after the Ice Age to the Stonehenge area all the way through to the Neolithic in the late 5th Millennium BC."

Concerns have been raised however concerning proposals to construct a road tunnel underneath Stonehenge with experts fearing that the project could destroy valuable archaeological evidence.

"Our only chance to find out about the earliest chapter of Britain’s history could be wrecked if the tunnel goes ahead," said Jacques.

NASA's Kepler Space Telescope Discovers Alien 'Super Earth' 180 Light-Years Away

Call it the comeback of the year.

Last year, equipment failure caused NASA to deem its $600-million Kepler space telescope irreparable. But since then, astronomers and engineers devised an ingenious way to repurpose Kepler, whose mission has been to scour the cosmos in search of Earthlike planets.

And now, the planet-hunting probe not only has been reborn, but also has discovered a massive exoplanet some 180 light-years away.

The planet, HIP 116454b, is a "super Earth" with a diameter 2.5 times the diameter of Earth. It orbits a star a little cooler and smaller than our sun, located in the Pisces constellation. The planet is too close to its star to support life as we know it, according to NASA.

Super Earths are in a class of planets that don't exist in our solar system, and HIP 116454b's average density suggests that it is either a watery world (three-fourths water and one-fourth rock) or a planet with a gaseous atmosphere, like a mini-Neptune.

"The Kepler mission showed us that planets larger in size than Earth and smaller than Neptune are common in the galaxy, yet they are absent in our solar system," Steve Howell, Kepler project scientist at NASA's Ames Research Center, said in a written statement.

Since its launch in 2009, Kepler has found nearly 1,000 confirmed Earth-like planets -- and when two of Kepler's gyroscope-like steering wheels failed last year, astronomers devised alternative methods to keep the hunt alive.

Scientists at Ball Aerospace in Colorado came up with an idea the Los Angeles Times called "so crazy it just might work." Since light particles from the sun exert enough pressure to push Kepler around, scientists realized they could harness this energy and use it as a "third wheel" to control Kepler. The plan worked.

“Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Kepler has been reborn and is continuing to make discoveries," researcher Andrew Vanderburg, a  graduate student at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass., said in a written statement. "Even better, the planet it found is ripe for follow-up studies.”

Dark Matter Signal May Have Been Found In Mysterious X-Ray Data

After a decades-long search, astronomers may finally have found the first sign of dark matter. That's the invisible substance that scientists believe makes up the bulk of our universe, since visible matter accounts for only about 20 percent of our universe by weight.

While scientists can observe dark matter indirectly by looking at its gravitational effects on visible matter, they have struggled to come up with tangible evidence that proves the stuff exists--until now.

This week, a team of researchers from Switzerland and the Netherlands announced that they may have detected the signal of decaying dark matter particles.

For the research, the team analyzed the x-rays emitted from two celestial objects: the Perseus galaxy cluster, an array of galaxies located approximately 250 million light years from Earth, and our "sister" galaxy Andromeda, which is approximately 2.5 million light years away. The researchers looked at data collected by the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton telescope and spotted a mysterious "anomaly" that could not have been emitted by any known atom or particle.

The same strange x-ray spike was also detected by a research team at Harvard in June, who announced they had spotted the emission in data from 70 different galaxy clusters.

"This tiny (several hundred extra photons) excess has been interpreted as originating from very rare decays of dark matter particles," Dr. Alexey Boyarsky, a professor of physics at Leiden University in the Netherlands and the lead researcher for the new study, told The Huffington Post in an email. "Although the signal is very weak, it has passed several 'sanity checks' that one expects from a decaying dark matter signal."

For instance, the researchers say the signal was more concentrated in the center and weak at the edges of Andromeda and the Perseus cluster, which corresponds to what they expected. Boyarsky added that the team has now found a signal at the same wave length coming from our own galaxy, the Milky Way.

Boyarsky and his team believe the signal comes from the decay of a dark matter particle, possibly a "sterile neutrino," which is a hypothetical particle believed to be 1/100th the size of an electron.

"Confirmation of this discovery may lead to construction of new telescopes specially designed for studying the signals from dark matter particles," Boyarsky said in a written statement. "We will know where to look in order to trace dark structures in space and will be able to reconstruct how the Universe has formed."

It was turning five in the morning on New Year’s Day 1970, when Miss Doreen Kendall, a practical nurse at the Cowichan District Hospital on Vancouver Island, noticed that one of the elderly patients in her ward was restless. Deciding the patient was too warm, she went to a window and parted the drapes to let in a little air.  “Just as I pulled the drapes a brilliant light hit me in the eyes,” she said. “It was still dark outside, but about 60 feet away right above the children’s ward to my left there was this object so big and bright I could see everything clearly.”  “The object was circular and had what I guess you would call a top and bottom. The bottom was silvery, like metal, and was shaped like a bowl. There was a string of bright lights around it like a necklace. The top was a dome made of something like glass. It was lit up from inside and I could see right into it.” 

Continuing her account in question-and-answer form, Miss Kendall told me there were two male-like figures in the craft, one behind the other, facing to her right away from the hospital. The one in front appeared taller, or perhaps was positioned higher, than the other. Their heads were encased in close-fitting dark material.  As she watched with intense curiosity, yet completely unfrightened – “I never felt so peaceful in all my life. I wish I could have talked to them” – she became aware of seeing more of the interior of the craft and realized it was tilting. In a moment she could see to a point just below their knees and noticed they were standing in front of what looked like stools.”They looked like fine, tall, well-built men,” she said. “They were dressed in tight-fitting suits of the same material that covered their heads but their hands were bare and I noticed how human they looked. Their flesh seemed just like ours.” 

Intrigued as she was by the appearance of the two figures, Miss Kendall found her interest centered on what looked like an instrument panel facing the one in front. The man in front was staring at the panel as if something very important was going on, and I wondered if they might have had mechanical trouble. I even thought they might have landed on the roof of the hospital and then had trouble taking off.”  She described the panel as a very large one, taking up almost half the interior of the object and reaching nearly to the top of the dome. The instruments, if that is what they were, seemed to be inset in the chrome-like metal of the panel and there was a variety of sizes.  The total sight was so absorbing that at first Miss Kendall’s thoughts were lost to everything else, and for a moment she forgot Mrs. Frieda Wilson, a registered nurse, was in the same room.   “Then when I did think of it, I guess I hesitated. I felt I mustn’t make a noise or do anything that would break the trend of what was happening.” 

At this point, almost as if her thoughts were being read, she saw the figure in the rear turn slowly and face squarely in her direction.  “He seemed to look right at me but I couldn’t see his face. It was covered by a darkish material that looked softer than the rest of his suit. I’m sure he saw me because then he touched the other man on the back. When he did this, the man in front reached down and took hold of something like a lever beside him. I’ll never forget how deliberately he did it. He pushed it back and forth and the saucer, or whatever you’d call it, started to circle slowly, still close to the building, in an anticlockwise direction.”  The motion seemed to break the spell for Miss Kendall, for then she remembered Mrs. Wilson was there and called her over.  Later I spoke separately to Mrs. Wilson, who said, “I noticed Miss Kendall standing at the window and wondered what she was looking at. In fact, I was just going to see when she beckoned to me, and then I saw this great big light over the patio outside the children’s ward. I’d say it was quite a bit larger than a car. (By the estimate of both witnesses, the object spanned a width of about five windows of the children’s ward. This gave it a diameter of at least 50 feet.) It looked circular in shape and the far side seemed to be higher than the side near us. It was moving around slowly and then it started to move away. I didn’t really see any top or bottom to it. It was all just tremendously bright.”

WINGLESS UFO CRAFT NEAR NORWEGIAN AIRPLANE

At 16.25 hours on July 11, 1995, a Dash-8 passenger plane from the Wideroe company was on route from Fornebu (Oslo) to Bronnoysund when something very strange happened over Steinkjer about 70 kilmetres north of Trondheim. The co-pilot caught sight of a flying object that moved to the right of the plane. From his left side of the cockpit the captain only saw a part of what happened: 

– First we thought it was another plane but as I bent down to get a better view, I noticed it had neither wings nor tail-fins, says captain Erik P. Risan. It was fine weather and good visibility. His (anonymous) co-pilot, on the right side of the cockpit, got a better view of the object but does not want to elaborate on the incident: 

– I have already told the facts to the radar station in Trondheim. If I had wanted this story in the media I would have said so, he said.  The Wideroe Dash-8 plane was flying on 15.000 feet. Soon the unknown object slowed down and disappeared. In about a minute it was all over. The crew informed the Vaernes tower that something was in the air. Sometimes a weather balloon goes astray, but the captain does not want to speculate if this might be the explanation in this case. The military radar at Grakallen near Trondheim had coverage of the area but caught no returns from an unknown object. There were no military planes in the area. The object was considered unidentified by the military forces.   11 year old Roy Arne Hallem apparently witnessed the incident from the porch of his home at Inndalen. The boy told his parents on Tuesday evening. The incident was published the next day.

– The object was very polished and almost as large as the airplane. I saw it for half-a-minute or a minute before it went straight up at disappeared at great speed, he said. Three hours later the same (or a similar) silvery polished object was spotted by 75 year old Bjarne Lein.
