Ex-Pentagon employee described seeing ‘translucent triangle’ fly overhead in 2023 UFO sighting
A former Pentagon employee and his wife saw a strange, triangle-shaped aircraft fly over their Colorado home late one night in October 2023, according to a startling account included in the fifth batch of UFO files released by the Trump administration Friday.
The story, outlined in an FBI interview summary known as a Form 302 from January of this year, contains some of the most striking descriptions of any Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena — government-speak for UFOs.
The witness said he and his spouse were sitting on their back porch shortly before 11 p.m. when they noticed something flying overhead “possibly as low as 300 feet.”

The summary report adds that the UFO “looked like a perfect triangle … without any extra wings, fins, or any bubble for the engine housing” and “appeared almost see-through” with “what appeared to be a haze or distortion around it … as if you were looking through mist; and that there were ripples like you were looking at an object that is underwater.”
The ex-Pentagon worker insisted that the object was “competely silent” and he “did not feel any rumble, static or any other effects from the object as it passed over him.”

Due to his less-than-perfect viewing angle at the time of the alleged sighting, the witness said he couldn’t identify whether the object’s shape was that of an isosceles or equilateral triangle.
He added its translucent appearance could be attributable to the UFO’s “either dark gray or silver” color blending in with the night sky, and that the precise shape of the form was difficult to discern.

The witness also initially believed the triangle had “rounded edges and corners,” but said that impression may have been due to the distortion around the UFO.
As the alleged craft traveled away from the couple, the man said he detected a “band of silverish blue light,” which he surmised could have been a byproduct of the vessel’s propulsion system.
The pair continued to observe the UFO as it moved in a “straight path” at a “consistent elevation” — traveling rapidly and “covering a large distance” in the time they were watching.

Moments before they lost sight of the triangle, the witness said it quickly switched to an almost vertical orientation without changing path or elevation.
He said the entire sighting lasted just four seconds, not enough time to whip out his phone to record or photograph it.

Living right near an airport, the eyewitness claimed to be “very familiar” with the normal operation of ordinary aircraft, including private planes, helicopters and even advanced drones, but said the movement of the UFO “did not match anything he encountered before.”
President Trump, who ordered the rolling disclosure earlier this year, has said repeatedly that he is skeptical about the existence of alien life, but mandated transparency about UFOs after former President Barack Obama said of aliens during a February interview: “They’re real, but I haven’t seen them.”

BREAKING NEWS - Declassified UFO files reveal hunt for 'dead spaceman' after mysterious sphere crashed in city
Declassified UFO files have exposed an extraordinary US investigation into claims that a ‘dead spaceman’ was discovered inside a mysterious metal sphere.
The object was said to have plummeted into the center of Conde, a municipality in the Brazilian state of Bahia, on November 8, 1963, blasting a hole approximately 13 feet deep.
Reports claimed the sphere had glass-covered windows and contained a human body dressed in heavy clothing marked with inscriptions nobody could decipher.
The astonishing account sparked inquiries by American officials, who asked diplomats in Brazil to determine whether something inexplicable had fallen from the sky.
Details of the alleged crash and its mysterious occupant were circulated among the State Department, Department of Defense and NASA.
For six days, officials pursued conflicting reports involving a possible spacecraft, a dead crewman and a suspected weather balloon.
But when US diplomats attempted to verify the account, the extraordinary mystery began to collapse.
The records were included in the Trump administration’s fifth tranche of UFO files released on Friday, alongside dozens of reports, images and videos previously unavailable to the public.

The object was said to have crashed into the center of Conde, a municipality in the Brazilian state of Bahia, on November 8, 1963, gouging a hole approximately 13 feet deep

On November 14, the US Embassy in Rio sent a telegram to the State Department and the American Consulate in Salvador asking for clarification
The story first surfaced in a Portuguese-language broadcast by Radio Tupi in Rio de Janeiro late on November 8, 1963.
A US government transcript recorded the station reporting that a ‘large metal sphere’ had fallen in the middle of Conde.
‘Inside is a human body dressed in heavy clothing bearing inscriptions which cannot be deciphered,’ the transcript stated.
It added that residents had been left intrigued and local authorities were informed, but it did not include photographs, identify witnesses or offer any physical evidence.
On November 14, the US Embassy in Rio sent a telegram to the State Department and the American Consulate in Salvador asking for clarification.
The embassy wanted to confirm whether officials in Salvador had issued an ‘unqualified negative’ response to local newspaper coverage of the incident.
Its message described the object as a ‘large metal manned balloon’ and the alleged occupant as a ‘dead crewman’ wearing a ‘uniform or spacesuit with strange markings.’
Officials had also heard that an object was seen flying over the area around the same time and had tentatively been identified as a weather balloon.
However, the telegram emphasized that no such craft had been recovered from the ground.

A notation shows the request was passed to the Defense Department and NASA later that afternoon.
Six days later, a final diplomatic cable delivered the results of inquiries conducted in Bahia, and dismantled the extraordinary story.
The November 20 document quoted Harold Midkiff, the American consul in Salvador, as saying the account had ‘apparently [been] fabricated in Rio.’
Midkiff said newspaper reporters and other investigators rushed to Conde but could not find anybody in the area who had witnessed a strange object descending.
The local secretary of public security speculated that it might have been a weather balloon, but even that sighting could not be verified.
Midkiff also sent the embassy two reports from newspapers in Bahia that supported his findings.
One stated that Brazil’s Ministry of Aeronautics ‘categorically’ denied that any strange object had appeared in Conde.

The claim attracted the attention of American officials, who asked diplomats in Brazil to determine whether it was true
The other carried the dismissive headline: ‘The Airship that wasn’t there.’
According to the final cable, the only remarkable result of the episode was that a reporter managed to transmit a dispatch from Conde using an old Morse code machine at the federal telegraph office.
The documents do not reveal who originated the sensational claim or how it reached Radio Tupi.
An apparent error in the final record lists the incident as occurring in November 1964, despite the cable being written in November 1963 and referring to reports issued that same month.
Although the files show that American officials examined the allegation, their inclusion in the newly released UFO archive does not mean the US verified a crashed spacecraft or recovered an occupant.
Instead, the records trace how an extraordinary radio report prompted an official inquiry that ultimately found no witnesses or physical evidence that the alleged crash ever occurred.

Department of Defense releases fifth set of UAP files, two potential sightings in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - The Department of Defense (DOD) has released its fifth set of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) files Friday, with two incidents occurring in Colorado Springs.
DOD officials released two incidents of people describing potential sightings of UAPs in Colorado Springs in 2023, with artistic renderings of each.
The FBI investigated both incidents, according to the files released by the DOD.

The Department of Defense has released its fifth set of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) files Friday, with two incidents occurring in Colorado Springs.
(Department of Defense)
Multiple agents from the FBI interviewed a former DOD employee who said he saw a dark “perfect triangle” shaped object in the sky in October 2023.
In the report, FBI officials said at around 10:50 p.m., the former employee and his wife were sitting on a back porch of their residence in Colorado Springs.
As the former employee was looking up, officials said he suddenly noticed that something had flown over his house from behind him.
The UAP appeared low in elevation, officials said, and the former employee estimated it was about the size of a large SUV based on his elevation estimation.
The former employee said he did not think he would have noticed the UAP if it was a cloudy night. Officials said he described the night as having clear skies, but could not recall seeing many stars in the sky.
At first, the former employee noticed the object’s movement before actually seeing its silhouette, officials said. He described the object as “almost see-through,” and it had appeared to have a haze or distortion around it.
The former employee further described it appearing as if he was looking at it through mist, officials said, and that there were “ripples like you were looking at an object that is underwater.”
The UAP looked like a “perfect triangle,” officials said, however, because of the former employee’s viewing angle, he could not determine whether it was an isosceles or equilateral in shape. He thought the triangle had rounded edges and corners, but stated the distortion around the UAP may have made the edges less sharp in appearance. His wife remembered seeing a “dark seem” running around the edge of the UAP.
The former employee stated that the UAP could have been either dark gray or silver in color, which would have blended in the night sky. With its surrounding distortion, it may have caused it to have the appearance of looking translucent.
The UAP traveled away from the former employee and his wife with a forward-facing point, officials said.
As it traveled away from them, officials said, along the trailing, flat, back edge, it had what appeared to be a band of “silverish blue light.” The former employee figured that the light could have been caused by the mode of propulsion for the UAP.
The UAP moved in a straight path at a consistent elevation, officials said. It moved “very quickly and covered a large distance in the short time they observed the UAP.”
The UAP the former employee and his wife saw that night did not match anything he encountered before.
The former employee said he witnessed the UAP for a total of four seconds from when he initially saw it to when he lost sight of it. He said it disappeared from his sight sooner than he expected it should have.

In a separate report, multiple agents from the FBI interviewed a US citizen about seeing a potential UAP near Colorado Springs also in October 2023.
The witness said he saw a “pixelated” or “distorted” UAP shaped like a “solid black triangular shaped object” with a “red light in each of the three corners.”
Officials said between 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., the witness walked over to his coworker and began looking up, admiring the stars.
As the witness looked up, he said he noticed a “very bright star” in the sky, which initially drew his attention.
As the witness was looking at the star, he said he noticed movement in his left peripheral vision. He looked further up and to his left and saw what appeared to be a “dark-gray colored cloud phasing into his sight.”
The cloud was stationary in the sky, officials said, and the witness stated it looked “very strange, as if it was pixelated or distorted in some other manner.”
As he watched the cloud, the witness said he saw a constant, diffuse red light on the bottom front point of a “solid black triangular shaped object” that was coming out of the cloud.
The object behind the point became wider and larger as it left the cloud until the witness saw the entire equilateral triangular object with a “red light in each of the three corners,” the witness said.
The witness estimated the UAP was “very large” and could have been as large as the parking lot that he was standing in. He estimated the UAP was about three to five stories in thickness.
At first, the UAP appeared to be moving at a steady speed like a helicopter, the witness said. It then almost instantaneously accelerated “to possibly Mach 1 or 2″ and turned slightly.
The witness noticed there appeared to be waves surrounding and radiating from the object. He compared the waves to the mirage effect that can be seen when one looks down a hot road into the distance.
Officials said the witness did not hear the object make any noise, could not see any form of propulsion and did not “smell anything out of the ordinary.”
As the UAP moved, it abruptly banked 90 degrees on its left side with its three lights still visible while veering towards the right, the witness said. It then quickly banked down to level flight.
The witness said the banking motion was opposite to that of a conventional aircraft that would bank in the direction it was turning.
As the witness lost sight of the object, he said he looked back to where it originally came from and noticed that the dark-gray cloud had disappeared.
The witness shortly called his wife to tell her about what he saw. She said his voice sounded “robotic, as if there was electronic interference occurring within the call.”
This is the second release of files that mention incidents in Colorado Springs. The first release was found in the DOD’s third release of UAP files back in June.

Eerie ‘shape-shifting orb' spotted hovering over Colorado for hoursAn eerie orb that appeared to be 'shape-shifting' was spotted by witnesses in Colorado. The globule hovered in the same position for hours, sparking conversations about its unconventional nature. A fencing crew working on their jobsite first noticed a glowing circular shape in the morning sky but were unable to explain what it was, per the Daily Mail.
One of the witnesses claimed to have observed the unidentified flying object with binoculars that revealed its transparency. Strangely, the orb remained fixed the entire day and was allegedly seen in two different places at the same time.
"[It was] perfectly round and transparent through binoculars, almost like a ball of energy," said Smith. The perfectly circular blob's fixed position is what left most viewers intrigued about its mysterious nature. Photographs of the orb have surfaced but barely justify the unnatural physicality of the object's size, altitude, or true distance.
The mysterious orb was seen for the second time this month. Smith recalled witnessing a similar white object with similar characteristics at another job site. "We saw the second orb a week later about 50 miles away on another job site, same exact situation," he said. At the time, the orb did not budge from its suspended position the entire day.
Images of the recent UFO sighting that Smith shared on Facebook sparked a debate among people trying to explain what it really was. Some even suggested it was just a balloon, but the witness had a different opinion. However, the photos did not justify its shape-shifting nature and ability to exist in two different locations simultaneously.
Smith dismissed the theory of balloons, hinting at the massive size of the orb. "It definitely wasn't a balloon… It was triple the height of a 747," he said. He suggested that the orb was inexplicable, unlike the common sightings of balloons in Aspen. A self-described UFO researcher, Scott C. Waring, said the object was a "plasma orb" that could change sizes and shapes. He went on to allege that the orb could read the thoughts of the witnesses.
In 2022, the U.S. Army reportedly witnessed a similar circular object shaped like a potato over Cheyenne Mountain, per Fox 21. The sighting made its way to the latest batch of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) reports from the Department of War. President Donald Trump had earlier directed the authorities to disclose all information about alien sightings in the sky to the public.
Eerie 'shape-shifting orb' spotted hovering over Colorado for hours
An eerie, glowing orb appeared to hang frozen in the Colorado sky for six hours, leaving witnesses unable to explain what they had seen.
A fencing crew noticed the brilliant white object near New Castle at approximately 11am and said it remained in the same position until they left the area around 4:30pm.
Images and footage from the encounter show what appears to be a luminous, almost perfectly circular object against the clear blue sky.
John Smith captured the eerie object in the sky, telling the Daily Mail: '[It was] perfectly round and transparent through binoculars, almost like a ball of energy.'
He added that the orb displayed no obvious movement despite being watched throughout the working day.
Adding to the mystery, the crew claimed this was not their first encounter with the unexplained object.
'We saw the second orb a week later about 50 miles away on another jobsite, same exact situation,' said Smith. 'The orb stayed in place the entire day.'
The photograph alone cannot establish the object’s size, altitude or distance from the camera, leaving open more conventional explanations such as a balloon or an optical effect.
But its apparent ability to remain fixed for hours, and its alleged appearance in two different places, has left the witnesses searching for answers.
Smith shared the footage and image in a Facebook group, where users offered numerous explanations for the mysterious sighting.
‘I honestly think this is a daytime plasma orb, which doesn’t happen often!’ one user said.
Several others argued that the object was nothing more than a weather balloon.
Smith rejected that theory, saying: ‘It definitely wasn’t a balloon… It was triple the height of a 747.’
It was unclear how Smith calculated the object’s altitude, which cannot be established from the footage alone without reliable information about its size and distance from the camera.
Some Boeing 747 models have a maximum operating altitude of 45,100 feet, meaning three times that height would be approximately 135,300 feet, or nearly 26 miles above Earth.
However, weather balloons routinely climb above 100,000 feet before bursting and can appear almost stationary when viewed from a great distance.
Smith said weather balloons are common around Aspen, but maintained that the object he and his colleagues witnessed was unlike any balloon they had previously seen.

Images and footage from the encounter show what appears to be a luminous, almost perfectly circular object against the clear blue sky
Self-described UFO researcher Scott C Waring claimed the object was a ‘plasma orb’ capable of altering its size and shape.
‘This is a plasma orb which can change sizes and even change shapes,’ Waring said, although he offered no evidence supporting that conclusion.
He also questioned why the witnesses recorded only approximately 10 seconds of footage despite reportedly observing the object for several hours.
Waring went on to allege that the orb could read the workers’ thoughts and access their memories through telepathy, an extraordinary claim that cannot be verified from the photograph or video.
Neither image provides enough information to determine the object’s size, altitude or composition, and no official agency has identified it as plasma or extraterrestrial technology.
Pentagon releases new batch of UFO files:
The 41 new files, posted on the Pentagon's UFO website, include a mix of documents, images and videos. The records come from the Pentagon, FBI, CIA, State Department and Executive Office of the President, with the oldest being from 1950 and the most recent being from this year.
The disclosure is the fifth release under an executive order President Trump signed in January directing the military and other agencies to produce more documents related to UFOs.
The bulk of Friday's release includes the type of grainy videos that have been the hallmark of past disclosures, showing flying objects captured by military sensors and cameras.
Six of the videos show different versions of the same incident — an encounter over the Gulf of Oman by Special Operations forces on an AC-130J gunship in September 2021. The clips are cellphone videos of screens on the gunship, showing objects picked up by its infrared and other sensors.
An accompanying intelligence report sheds more light on the footage. The report said the forces onboard the gunship "observed approximately 25 instances of UAPs while conducting a live fire exercise in the Gulf of Oman."
"The UAPs were observed as cold orbs flying at lower altitudes between 250 to 1300 MPH in different formations as well as maneuvering aggressively. UAPs also appeared to react to the aircraft firing its main cannon," the report said.
The encounter could not be resolved by the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, the Pentagon's UAP investigative arm.
One clip submitted by U.S. Central Command shows footage captured by a military aircraft over a populated area in the Middle East in 2025. The video shows what appears to be an object zooming across the screen. The incident also remains unresolved.
Another video shows footage captured by a "U.S. Government Special Agent" in the western U.S. this year. The Pentagon said the video "features two, slow-moving 'black-hot' areas of contrast, visible in infrared imaging."
A partially redacted report about that encounter said the agent received a report about a radio frequency being detected and soon pointed a handheld infrared sensor in its direction.
"He saw a black object in the sky. It was not moving fast. He took pictures using the optical device. While observing he saw a second object to the right of the first and took additional photos/videos. The objects were moving together at the same speed," the FBI report said. "Both were black hot. He lost view of the objects when they traveled a distance out of view. Total observation time was approximately 5 - 10 minutes."
Friday's release includes eight 302 forms, which the FBI uses to record the details of witness interviews. All eight include redactions to shield confidential information, and most are paired with artist renderings from the bureau showing the objects that the witnesses described. Others were released along video footage that the interviewees captured, showing what appear to be orbs and other light sources in the sky.
One noteworthy 302 report records an interview with a former military pilot in 2024. The pilot told an agent that military pilots began seeing strange lights in the sky between midnight and 3 a.m. the year before. The pilot said he first saw the lights during a flight from Massachusetts to Ireland in October 2023.
"[Redacted] was at an elevation of 37,000 feet and believed the lights were higher than him, probably at 50,000 feet or higher. The lights were white in color, would start out as dim, and get brighter before they eventually faded out," the report said. "The full cycle of the lights would range from 10 seconds to one minute."
The pilot said he saw the lights roughly 10 times after that first experience.
He also told the agent about something he saw while serving in Afghanistan in 2002.
"At approximately 4:30 AM local time, [redacted] noticed that the stars were getting blacked out over Bagram. It appeared as if something huge went overhead, from west to east, and was an equilateral triangle shape. The object was moving silently, at a consistent speed and altitude, possibly 150 knots, with no lights visible," the agent wrote.
The pilot "estimated it was 500 feet in size, but he could not fully see the shape of the object." He reported that the pilot he was with "also observed the triangle, and when it passed over stated, 'did you see that?'"
The FBI produced this artist's rendering of the object:
The Pentagon said that Friday's document disclosure won't be the last under Mr. Trump's executive order, with a spokesman saying the department "will release additional files on a rolling basis."
Trump releases new UFO footage as files expose silent 500ft triangle over US base and mysterious body with undecipherable markings
The Trump administration released a fresh batch of UFO files on Friday, exposing dozens of reports and videos previously hidden from the public.
The fifth tranche includes chilling accounts of enormous triangular craft, mysterious high-speed orbs and even a metal sphere allegedly carrying a human body.
Among the most extraordinary reports is a military pilot's account of a silent, 500-foot triangular object that swept over Bagram Airfield, a US-operated base in Afghanistan, in 2002.
The witness said it then abruptly rolled 90 degrees onto its left side while veering right, the opposite direction in which a conventional aircraft would normally bank, before quickly returning to level flight.
The pilot told agents that he was stargazing with a colleague at approximately 4.30am when the stars suddenly began disappearing above them.
'It appeared as if something huge went overhead,' the FBI interview summary states.
The pilot described the object as an equilateral triangle that moved silently across the sky at a steady speed and altitude, despite displaying no visible lights.
Another file recounts claims that a large metal sphere crashed into the center of Brazil's Rio de Janeiro in 1963, gouging a 13ft-deep hole.
The mysterious object reportedly had window-shaped openings covered with thick glass, and contained a human body dressed in heavy clothing bearing inscriptions that could not be deciphered.

A screenshot of a video released on Friday showing an unresolved UFO report from last year. The footage shows a small orb-like object traveling across the screen
However, the records preserve witness statements and media reports rather than verified government findings, and they offer no evidence that either object was extraterrestrial.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said on Friday: 'The Department of War is in lockstep with President Trump to bring unprecedented transparency regarding our government’s understanding of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena.
'These files, hidden behind classifications, have long fueled justified speculation, and it’s time the American people see it for themselves.
'This release of declassified documents demonstrates the Trump Administration’s earnest commitment to unprecedented transparency.'
One of the records, a three-page FBI interview summary, details the pilot’s alleged encounter with the 500ft triangular craft over Bagram.
He estimated that the equilateral object was traveling at around 173mph.
The second pilot reportedly witnessed it too, asking, ‘Did you see that?’ as it passed overhead.
The witness said he did not report the encounter at the time and later failed to find anything that explained what they had observed.

An artist's impression of a reported incident this year in an undisclosed part of the Western US
The same file revealed that the pilot subsequently reported unexplained lights during commercial flights beginning in October 2023.
He first noticed them while flying from Boston to Dublin at 37,000ft and believed they were hovering at least 13,000ft above his aircraft.
The lights reportedly brightened and faded in cycles lasting between ten seconds and one minute. Some remained stationary while others traveled in straight lines or suddenly changed direction.
Although they resembled aircraft landing lights, the pilot said their behavior did not match planes, meteors, satellites or Starlink - Elon Musk's satellite internet company.
He claimed to have witnessed the phenomenon approximately ten times, with individual encounters lasting from 45 minutes to two hours.
During a flight in February 2024, he recorded more than ten lights moving and changing brightness as his aircraft traveled at approximately Mach 0.80 near Sioux Falls.
The pilot said he never felt threatened and believed the lights remained at least 100 miles away.
A separate FBI file described an even more dramatic encounter involving a giant black triangle over Colorado Springs in October 2023.

Friday's release also included an encounter with a mysterious triangular craft that appeared over Colorado Springs in 2023
The witness told agents that he was standing outside with a co-worker on a clear night when a strange, dark-gray cloud appeared in the sky.
He described the cloud as stationary and seemingly ‘pixelated or distorted’ before a red light emerged from it.
As he watched, an enormous solid-black triangle reportedly came into view, displaying a diffuse red light at each of its three corners.
The witness estimated that the object was as large as the parking lot where he was standing and measured between three and five stories thick.
It initially traveled at a speed comparable to a helicopter before ‘almost instantaneously’ accelerating to what he believed was Mach 1 or Mach 2.
He claimed waves appeared to radiate from the craft, producing a shimmering distortion similar to the mirage seen above a hot road.
Despite its apparent size and speed, the triangle allegedly generated no noise, displayed no visible propulsion and produced no unusual odor.
The witness said it then abruptly rolled 90 degrees onto its left side while veering right, the opposite direction in which a conventional aircraft would normally bank, before quickly returning to level flight.

Analysis of films of unidentified objects over Utah and Montana in the 1950s was in the files
After the object disappeared to the south, he looked back and discovered that the strange cloud from which it had emerged had also vanished.
Around a minute later, he called his wife to describe what he had seen, but she told him his voice sounded ‘robotic,’ as though electronic interference was disrupting the call.
The FBI report records the witness’s account but offers no conclusion about what he saw and does not independently verify his estimates of the object’s size, speed or altitude.
Another Colorado Springs couple described a smaller triangular object that passed approximately 300 above their home in 2023.
Another Colorado Springs couple described a smaller triangular object that passed approximately 300ft above their home in 2023.
The witness said it appeared ‘almost see-through’ and was surrounded by haze and ripples, ‘like you were looking at an object that is underwater.’
It reportedly banked until it was nearly vertical without changing its direction or altitude, then disappeared within four seconds.
Another study analyzed films of unidentified objects recorded over Utah and Montana in the early 1950s.

Another Colorado Springs couple described a smaller triangular object that passed around 300ft above their home in 2023. Above is an artist's impression of the encounter
The objects appeared disk-shaped and blue-white, with analysts calculating that those in the Utah footage traveled at up to 2,457mph and endured acceleration reaching 965 times the force of gravity.
In a bizarre encounter this year, two witnesses reported red lights descending over a remote area of the western US, with one allegedly hovering just 6ft above the ground.
The report concluded that birds, balloons and conventional aircraft could not explain the calculated movements, describing the objects as neither identifiable natural phenomena nor ‘commonly known man-made objects.’
But those figures relied on assumptions about the objects’ distance from the camera, which analysts acknowledged was arbitrary.

Another glow appeared to move through a dry wash around 330ft behind them.
Afterward, one witness discovered that his mechanical watch had jumped 25 minutes ahead, while his phone, vehicle clock and his companion’s digital watch continued showing the correct time.
The watch allegedly continued running normally afterward, but remained 25 minutes fast.

See the damage left behind by SpaceX on the moon: Shocking photos reveal new lunar crater carved out by one of Elon Musk's discarded rockets
Shocking images have revealed the damage left behind when Elon Musk's discarded SpaceX rocket crashed into the moon.
On Wednesday, an out–of–control SpaceX Falcon 9 second stage careened into the lunar surface at 5,400 miles per hour (8,690km/h).
Scientists believe that the 4,500kg and 39ft–long (12m) rocket would have hit with a force equivalent to 15,000 sticks of dynamite, or three tonnes of TNT.
Now, a Korean lunar satellite has captured the first images of the new crater that the blast left behind.
The Korea Aerospace Research Institute's (KARI) Danuri spacecraft flew over the impact site at 7.34am BST, shortly after the SpaceX rocket collided.
The orbiter also managed to grab images 30 minutes before the impact, revealing a striking before and after.
In these incredible images, a new crater on the lunar surface is clearly visible, which scientists estimated could be up to 27m across and five metres deep.
The area around the crash site is also noticeably darker after the rocket carved out the landscape, raining down dust and rocks on the surrounding terrain.

In a post on X, KARI said: 'Danuri began observations about 30 minutes before the collision and, through orbit control, passed over the impact site multiple times, conducting a total of 8 imaging sessions.
'Through this observation, changes in the terrain around the impact site and traces of ejecta spread were confirmed.'
KARI says that its observations will soon be backed up by photos from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.
Although this orbiting observer wasn't in the right position to catch the crash live, it's expected to take some very clear photos of the crater next week.
Meanwhile, a group of researchers from the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía in Spain claim they have recorded the only footage of the impact actually taking place.
The Falcon 9 booster hit just behind the moon's limb, meaning that the actual flash of impact was hidden.
However, astronomers think they managed to catch the rising plume of dust and debris that the force of the impact kicked out into space.
The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched from Kennedy Space Centre, Florida, in January last year.

Scientists believe that the 4,500kg and 39ft–long (12m) rocket would have hit with a force equivalent to 15,000 sticks of dynamite, or three tonnes of TNT
It was carrying two private lunar landers, Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost and ispace's Resilience, into lunar orbit and was not intended to crash into the moon.
The Falcon 9's primary booster is designed to be reusable, safely returning to Earth after pushing the upper stages out into space.
However, the later sections are simply jettisoned and left to drift through space, where they often burn up in Earth's atmosphere after several years.
While it was never intended to hit the moon, a combination of lunar gravity and unexpected solar weather eventually pushed this particular secondary stage into a collision course with our lunar satellite.
This was initially spotted by independent astronomers, who noticed the rocket's dangerous trajectory, before being confirmed by NASA's Centre for Near–Earth Object Studies.
Scientists around the world have been extremely excited by the impact because it offers a rare chance to watch a lunar impact under relatively controlled conditions.
The moon is hit by thousands of meteorites every single year, but most of these are too small to pick up with telescopes or don't have a known size and mass.
However, scientists know exactly what a SpaceX Falcon 9 second stage weighs and is made of.

The orbiter passed overhead 30 minutes before the impact and multiple times afterwards, revealing the shocking before (left) and after (right)
This essentially turns the impact into a giant laboratory experiment, which is perfect for learning more about how impacts have shaped the moon's history.
In 2006, the European Space Agency deliberately crashed the SMART–1 satellite into the lunar surface at 4,470 miles per hour (7,200km/h) so they could watch the impact.
The last time a rocket accidentally crashed into the moon was in 2022, when pieces of a Chinese spacecraft left two craters on the far side.
These impacts don't pose a threat to any human life, and the debris they kick up won't affect the Earth.
However, scientists are beginning to become concerned about the growing mounds of human junk gathering in space.
There are now roughly 3,000 human–made objects on the moon, with a combined weight of approximately 190 tonnes, and researchers expect many more to rain down in the future.
While these impacts only directly affect a small region of the moon's surface, their after–effects could become disastrous.
Dr Mark Burchell, an astronomer from the University of Kent, told the Daily Mail: 'The impact does not just make a crater, it creates ejecta, a sort of debris that moves away from the impact site at speed,' Dr Burchell explains.

Researchers from the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía in Spain recorded what they believe to be the dust plume kicked up by the impact
'That debris will rain down over a much larger region, 10s to 100s of kilometres away.
'Each piece of debris may be small, but could puncture the skin of a pressurised vessel – bad news for the astronauts inside – or penetrate into a robotic spacecraft and damage its circuits.'
Right now, the risk is very low, so scientists are free to use the moon as a test site for impacts, but that could soon change.
Dr Matthew Bothwell, an astronomer from the University of Cambridge, told the Daily Mail: 'There are thousands of things orbiting around Earth these days, and a crash with any one of them could scupper a mission.
'Right now the risk is pretty small, but there are plans for some serious Lunar infrastructure in the coming decades, with NASA, China, and various private companies planning landers and even permanent Moon bases.
'So while it’s not a problem today, it’s the kind of thing we should be thinking about so it doesn’t become a problem in future years.'

There was nothing much happening in Jerome and Benno Leuer’s yard in Hamel, Minn. on August 11, 1948. It was noontime in the thick of summer and the boys, 10 and 8, were idly playing when, as they later described it, something overhead caught their eyes. They looked up and their jaws dropped.
Roughly 12 ft. up in the air was a dull gray, circular object, about 1 ft. thick and 2 ft. in diameter, slowly descending between them. They stood transfixed as the object settled onto the ground, making a clattering sound like metal hitting metal. The object rested there a moment, and then began emitting a high-pitched whistle that, to the boys, sounded like a teakettle. It spun in place once, then shot 20 ft. into the air, hovered for a moment, and ascended to 30 ft., maneuvering around tree branches and telephone wires in its path. Finally, it jetted out of sight.
Jerome and Benno ran inside and told their parents what they had seen. Their father notified the only authority he could think of: R.R. Sheridan, the local postmaster. Sheridan, in turn, called the FBI field office in St. Paul. To the family’s surprise, the bureau sent an agent. He interviewed the boys and inspected the yard.
“The spot where the alleged ‘flying saucer’ had landed was approximately 2 ft. in diameter and appeared as though a heavy object had landed there or had touched down,” read the statement in the official report. “The ground was dented and protruding rocks had been leveled.”
The boys grew up and moved on. Nothing came of their mysterious sighting, but the government preserved the report all the same, filing it away in a cache of documents it had already begun keeping, of both civilian and military accounts of flying, hovering, blinking objects that appeared in the skies, skittering about, sometimes touching down, and then vanishing back the way they came, just as Jerome’s and Benno’s object had. For 78 years, the boys’ story—and hundreds of others like it—had languished in storage. Until May 8, 2026, when President Donald Trump began a serial release of four tranches of more than 450 official reports going back to the middle of the last century, ordering that they be posted on a Department of Defense website and made available for public perusal.
After decades of secrecy, stigma, and sometimes silliness—like the conspiratorial tales about recovered spacecraft and alien remains at a place known as Area 51 in Roswell, N.M.—the government has at long last begun taking things seriously. What used to be called UFOs and now go by the more decorous handle of UAPs—or unidentified anomalous phenomena—are being given the full investigatory treatment.
Congressional hearings into the origins of the sightings were held in 2022 and 2023. In 2022, the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) was established “to detect, identify and attribute objects of interest.” In December 2023, then President Joe Biden signed into law the Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena Disclosure Act, requiring the collection, review, and public disclosure of all sightings and encounters.

On June 12, capturing the global hunger for answers to the UAP mystery, director Steven Spielberg—who has long had a sort of seismographic sense of the popular mood—released his latest film, Disclosure Day, in which a government cover-up of extraterrestrial visitations is exposed. The movie grossed $94 million worldwide on its opening weekend alone. At about the same time, the White House established the UAP Science Advisory Council, a body led by Harvard astrophysicist and cosmologist Avi Loeb to study the national-security risks posed by UAPs.
“I was tasked to create a panel for the White House, AARO, the Director of National Intelligence, the FBI, and related agencies, so that all of these organizations are in contact [about UAPs],” says Loeb. “It’s clear, based on much better sensors that we have, that there are objects the intelligence agencies and the Pentagon do not, cannot figure out.”
It’s not just for the government, academia, and Hollywood to do that figuring. Last year, the nonprofit Disclosure Foundation, led by former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Intelligence Christopher Mellon, was launched with the aim of encouraging the release of UAP reports, promoting scientific investigation of sightings, supporting whistle-blowers, and formulating policy related to UAPs. On June 25 of this year the group convened a Capitol Hill forum in the Kennedy Caucus Room of the Russell Senate Office Building.
The daylong event featured political figures including Representatives Eric Burlison (Republican, Missouri), Anna Paulina Luna (Republican, Florida), André Carson (Democrat, Indiana), and Suhas Subramanyam (Democrat, Virginia), and Senator Mike Rounds (Republican, South Dakota). Loeb was present, as were other well-lettered experts discussing the technological, national-security, economic, psychological, and even religious implications of UAPs. The speakers acknowledged that in some respects they were there at their peril, since publicly discussing flying saucers still carries reputational risk.
“You’re black, you’re Muslim, you represent a district in Indiana,” Carson said of himself, “and now you want to talk about UAPs?”
But it’s a measure of the growing public interest in the phenomena and the mounting evidence that something is out there that more and more serious people are willing to take that risk. Even former President Barack Obama weighed in on the topic. In a February interview, Obama was asked if extra-terrestrial life exists, and he responded, “They’re real,” hastening to add, “But I haven’t seen them. They’re not being kept at Area 51. There’s no underground facility—unless there’s this enormous conspiracy and they hid it from the President of the United States.”

In an open hearing before the House Intelligence Counterterrorism, Counterintelligence, and Counterproliferation Subcommittee on May 17, 2022, Deputy Director of Naval Intelligence Scott Bray shared this video of a U.S. naval jet encounter with an unidentified anomalous phenomenon (UAP). The object’s path was fleeting, but a cockpit camera captured it before it vanished. The left-hand image includes a portion of the jet’s canopy.
U.S. Department of War (DOW)—The appearance of U.S. DOW visual information does not imply or constitute DOW endorsement.
Obama added that he based his belief in the likelihood of extraterrestrial beings in part on the fact that “statistically, the universe is so vast that the odds are good there’s life out there.” That’s a point a lot of believers make, especially since NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope and other space-based and Earth-based observatories have discovered thousands of exoplanets—or planets orbiting other stars—leading astronomers to conclude that virtually every one of the trillions of stars in the sky has at least one world circling it.
As with all things in a loud, messy, pluralistic democracy, public opinion plays a role here too—and Americans are clearly ready for action. According to a poll conducted by the Disclosure Foundation just weeks before the Capitol Hill forum, 84% of respondents want more information from the government on UAPs, 69% believe UAPs are real, 59% support hearings and transparency laws, and just 21% trust the federal government to be telling the complete truth. The responses are bipartisan. A statistically meaningless 1% separates the whopping 89% of Republicans and 88% of Democrats who say they want more information on UAPs.
“You could be a single-issue candidate running in the U.S.,” says Jordan Flowers, the Disclosure Foundation’s executive director. “That single issue could be [UAP] transparency, and you could get elected just based on that.”
Unlike other single issues like taxation, immigration, or climate, which unfold indefinitely over decades, UAP transparency has a fixed end point. The government will tell all it knows, the sightings will be investigated, and their origins will be determined to be terrestrial—highly advanced military or other assets—or, epochally, extraterrestrial.
“My null hypothesis would be that these are human-made objects being operated by adversarial nations, near strategic assets of the U.S.,” says Loeb. And if they’re not? If they do come from ... elsewhere? “That will be the biggest discovery ever made by humanity.”
The U.S. Senate doesn’t lend out the Kennedy Caucus Room to just anybody. Opened in 1909, the room is a prepossessing place, with carved marble walls measuring 74 ft. long, 54 ft. wide, and 35 ft. high—climbing to an ornate ceiling decorated with gilded rosettes and acanthus leaves. The doors of the room open onto the Russell Building’s vaulted, marble rotunda, which rises three stories high.
The caucus room has seen a lot of history: it was the site of hearings on the sinking of the Titanic, the Teapot Dome scandal, Pearl Harbor, the Vietnam War, Watergate, Iran-Contra, and more. Both John and Robert Kennedy announced their presidential runs there. It was thus no small thing that the Disclosure Foundation was cleared to use the space to hold its June 25 summit. The 300-plus people in attendance took the event exceedingly seriously. Despite the once flaky, fringey, fantastical topic under discussion, the vibe was clearly not Burning Man, Comic Con, or South by Southwest. One attendee was decked out in a T-shirt featuring a bug-eyed alien playing electric guitar, but for everyone else in the room, business attire was the order of the day.
“Today, experts that rarely occupy the same room—physicists, historians, economists, intelligence professionals, educators, journalists, and policymakers—are gathered here in this room,” said Mellon in his opening remarks, “to discuss a subject that was, until very recently, untouchable.”

Of all of the panels that appeared throughout the day, it was a morning session on the security and defense implications of UAPs that had the most gravity. The panelists discussed the repeated sightings of UAPs both by naval pilots and personnel at military bases, raising concern about the permeability of armed American airspace. If the objects’ origins were indeed found to be extraterrestrial, the technology of the alien species far eclipses any flying machines human beings have ever developed. If they are terrestrial—built and flown by rival nations—they signal an arms race that we are already losing.
Retired naval Lieutenant Ryan Graves had his first encounter with UAPs off the East Coast of the U.S. 14 years ago and more in the two years that followed. “We came back from a deployment in 2012 and began to upgrade our radar systems,” he told TIME, “and we immediately saw objects in our working area that we were not expecting. There were usually anywhere between three and six objects within the airspace off the coast of Virginia Beach. Sometimes [they were] completely stationary at very high winds, sometimes flying at 250 to 350 knots [288 to 402 m.p.h.].”
The objects, Graves said, were 5 to 15 ft. in diameter, and appeared to be a gray or black cube inside a clear sphere. They gave off no exhaust and flew in such a way—diving and soaring and suddenly changing direction—that any human passenger would be subject to potentially deadly g-forces. Sometimes they flew so close to the Navy jets that the pilots were required to file hazard reports so that other planes operating in the vicinity could be warned.
“They would be outside doing these behaviors all day,” Graves says. “It might appear that these objects are using magical physics we don’t understand.” As part of the pilots’ routine rotation, they later shifted their operations to the waters off Jacksonville, Fla. They got no peace there either. The UAPs, says Graves, “were either already down there or they had followed us down, because we had over a dozen incidents.”
The naval flyers’ Virginia and Florida encounters are by no means the only experience the military has had with UAPs. One of the most compelling is the so-called Tic Tac incident, which occurred off the coast of California in 2004. During an otherwise routine deployment that year, radar personnel repeatedly noticed the reflection of a skittering airborne object they could not explain—looping and diving, climbing and then dropping from an altitude of 80,000 ft. to 20,000 ft. To crack the mystery, a team of flyers was scrambled into the sky. Once aloft, they discovered what they estimated to be a 45-ft.-long flying machine that bore a striking resemblance to a Tic Tac breath mint.
“All four of us looked down and saw a Tic Tac object moving very abruptly over the water,” said pilot David Fravor in a 2023 appearance before a congressional committee. “There were no rotors, no rotor wash, or any sign of visible control surfaces like wings. As we pulled nose onto the object within about a half-mile of it, it rapidly accelerated and disappeared.” Cockpit video preserved the encounter.
Military assets on the ground have been harassed too. For 17 straight nights in December 2024, Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Va. was swarmed by objects that appeared overhead 45 minutes after sundown and repeatedly flew over the base. According to one eyewitness—former astronaut Scott Kelly, who in 2022 was tapped to serve on a NASA UAP study team—the objects appeared to be 20 ft. long, flying at an altitude of 3,000 to 4,000 ft., at a speed of 100 m.p.h. The incursions became serious enough that Langley canceled nighttime training flights and moved its F-22 jets to another air base.
More dramatic was a reported sighting by six federal law-enforcement officers in October 2023, near what the official memorandum described as “a sensitive national security site in the western United States.” For two consecutive days, just at dusk, the witnesses reported observing “a luminous ‘mother orb’ appear[ing] to produce smaller red orbs, one after another, multiple times over a period of several hours. The ‘red orbs’ reportedly persisted for several seconds before disappearing.”

On April 19, 2023, Sean Kirkpatrick, director of the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), shared a video that depicts an apparent silver, orblike object crossing a video sensor’s field of view. Kirkpatrick said the “metallic orbs” are the most common type of UAP and are reported from “all over the world.”
U.S. Department of War (DOW)—The appearance of U.S. DOW visual information does not imply or constitute DOW endorsement.
“It is clear that we have lost control of our airspace. Full stop,” says Flowers. “Whether this is some form of human intelligence, or whether it’s something else, I am not creative enough to say.”
“Many of these things are certainly not drones,” says Luis Elizondo, a former intelligence officer with the government’s Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP). “They are advanced technology from somewhere. If you’re scrambling jets off Langley, you’ve got a problem.”
Not everyone is persuaded by the reports. “Great claims require great evidence,” says Jon Kosloski, director of AARO, “and the evidence just isn’t there yet.” Kelly does not minimize the security risk posed by rogue objects but does not think they have to have an exotic origin. “In science, eyewitness testimony is kind of opinion; it’s not data,” he says. “I have never seen anything that couldn’t be explained.”
Kelly points to a sighting he made during his days as a military pilot when he was flying a Tomcat jet off the coast of Virginia. In the midst of the maneuvers, the pilot in the back seat of the plane suddenly announced, “We just passed something. It looks like a UFO.”
“What?” Kelly asked.
“Yeah, maybe it was like an alien spaceship or something. It looked really weird.”
Kelly banked the jet around in the opposite direction, looking for an object through his wind screen, and indeed saw it in the distance, though it wasn’t showing up on radar. He drew closer and closer until he was on an intercept course, and the bogey at last resolved itself.
“It was Bart Simpson,” Kelly says. “It was a balloon.”
If UAPs are ever confirmed to have an extraterrestrial origin it will represent what Carlos Eire, professor of history and religious studies at Yale University and a speaker at the Disclosure Forum, calls a “rupture” in human civilization.
“A rupture is something after which nothing is the same,” he says. “It’s similar to the rupture that occurred for the natives of North and South America when Europeans showed up.”
Clinical psychologist Jennice Vilhauer, a member of the advisory boards of both Loeb’s UAP Council and the Disclosure Foundation, spoke at the June 25 event, and her words were sobering. “If this news were to come out tomorrow,” she says, “we’re entirely unprepared.
An emotional contagion like panic is always possible, but Vilhauer does not think most people would react that way even to such paradigm-shifting news as nonhuman intelligence. “There are certain communities that would look at this through a catastrophic lens, like an end-times event,” she says. “But I don’t see this being something that would spread across the entire population.”
That doesn’t mean that there would not be a psychic impact. A lot, she says, would depend on whether alien life was perceived as either benevolent, indifferent, or hostile. Even a microbe could be hostile if it posed a risk of infection—a peril about which humans have always been mindful. During the first three moon-landing missions, returning astronauts were required to spend three weeks in medical quarantine against the chance that they picked up alien germs—a practical impossibility since no microorganisms could survive on the dry, airless moon.

Also playing a role would be the question of what Vilhauer calls personal relevance—whether the news of nonhuman life affected any one person directly. The greatest emotional reaction would occur in people who perceive a high threat level and high personal relevance; the least effect would be in people who see low threat and low personal relevance. “Disclosure alone would be a huge, unprecedented event,” Vilhauer says. “Those two things together—personal relevance and threat—could create a really negative response.”
Mental health will not be the only thing that’s affected by UAP disclosure; spiritual health will be too. As long ago as the 1970s, divinity scholars established the concept of exotheology—a branch of Christian thought that includes the possibility of life in the cosmos. That can come in handy now. Eire believes that the three leading monotheistic religions—Christianity, Judaism, and Islam—will have the most work to do coming to terms with nonhuman intelligence. That’s because all three of them share the idea that there is one God, and that he created everything including human beings. Our species, we like to think, is his crowning creation—a belief that will be harder to hold onto if a cosmic species comes along that’s better, smarter, fitter than us. “The book of Genesis, which is shared in different ways by Jews, Christians, and Muslims, poses this very troubling story about human origins,” says Eire.
Christianity, Eire believes, will have a special hurdle to overcome in adjusting to the idea of off-Earth life because of its teaching that God became human. On the other hand, all three mono-theistic religions do have some practice with the idea of intelligent, nonhuman life. “Jews, Christians, and Muslims accept as a given that human beings are not alone in God’s creation,” says Eire. “There have always been angels.”
The puzzle of how to marry theology and extraterrestrial life predates the current surge in UAP disclosures. In 2014, Brother Guy Consolmagno, then the director of the Vatican Observatory, coauthored the cheeky book Would You Baptize an Extraterrestrial?…and Other Questions From the Astronomer’s In-Box at the Vatican Observatory. When someone posed the baptism question to him directly, he famously answered “Only if she asked.”
Questions about UAPs and the life-forms that may or may not have sent them our way may turn in part on faith, but they also turn on physics. While exobiologists continue to explore the possibility of microbial life on Mars and on ocean moons like Jupiter’s Europa and Saturn’s Enceladus, it is well accepted that our solar system has just one world with advanced, intelligent life, and that’s ours. That means looking for exceptional beings farther afield.
The closest star system to Earth is Proxima Centauri, a tidy 4.25 light-years—or 25 trillion miles—distant. Getting from there to here would in theory take at least 4.25 years, and only if you’re traveling at the speed of light—which Albert Einstein long ago proved can’t be done. Other star systems lie thousands and billions of light-years away, meaning that traveling the trans-Earth distance could take almost as long as the age of the universe itself.
Still, plenty of academics don’t rule out the possibility of alien visitors from the stars. “I would put the estimate of the chances that we’ve been visited—and I would define that as an exploration through our solar system, leading to them being aware that Earth has life and civilization—at maybe something like 50%,” says Jack Singal, professor of physics at the University of Richmond. He puts the odds that any of the claimed UFO or UAP sightings over the past century have actually been one of those visitations at a much lower 5%. “I think there’s just enough mundane explanations for these things,” he says.
Jonathan Miller, a program engineer for MIT’s department of mechanical engineering and the director of an academic program called Confronting Unknowns, which explores the question of UAPs, does not go as far as Singal, but he is open to the possibility that other civilizations are not as constrained by Einsteinian physics as we think they’d be. “There are the physics of traveling from point A to point B,” he says. “But there may be alternative ways to sort of bridge that gap. There’s probably an iceberg of possibilities [to explain UAPs] below the waterline.”
Some of those explanations may be straightforward—at least compared with extraterrestrials. If it’s possible that some rival power has developed advanced technology that can perform the acrobatics the UAPs do, it’s equally possible that the U.S. has as well and that witnesses are simply observing domestic hardware. The military is nothing if not secretive, and all of this work could be done in the dark—much the way the Manhattan Project, which developed the world’s first nuclear weapons, operated silently, invisibly, from June 1942 to August 1947.
It’s possible too that there is something even more prosaic than earthly or alien space technology at play. Miller speaks admiringly of the “mark one eyeballs of a well-trained pilot” as perhaps the most reliable sensor system on any plane—better than radar, infrared, or motion sensors. But those eyeballs can be fooled—especially given the thermal, chemical, and physical complexity of the atmosphere in which the UAPs are being seen and reported.
“The atmosphere is a crazy place,” says Singal. “You can see double, triple rainbows. You can go to some Arctic regions and see the sun appear several times at several different angles in the sky. You can have tornadoes that pick up and throw a car or impale a cow on a tree. Could it make a black triangle move across the sky for 10 seconds? I would say it could.”
“You get a lot of reports from naval officers, more so than from the Air Force,” says Kelly. “That’s because the Navy flies over water and it’s an environment that is very subject to optical illusions.”
Witnesses, of course, swear by the evidence of their eyes, and sightings like those of Graves and his fellow pilots, which involved large objects moving at close proximity between two naval jets, are hard to dismiss as just the hallucinatory interplay of light and air.
“We came within 50 ft. of the lead aircraft,” says Graves. “I think some of what we were seeing were true UAPs. What I mean by that is that these were true airborne assets that were physical in nature, that were exhibiting capabilities beyond our state of the art.”
The community of people who believe accounts like these and want to get to the bottom of them is growing. In addition to chairing the UAP Science Advisory Council, Loeb is co-directing the Harvard-based Galileo Project, which scans the skies looking for hints of extraterrestrial technology. Galileo relies on three Earth-based telescopes—in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Nevada—using infrared, visible, and radio sensors to track moving objects that seem to deviate from the performance of earthly technology. In 2018, Loeb and his colleague Shmuel Bialy, then a post-doctorate researcher, made headlines with a paper in the Astrophysical Journal Letters, in which they entertained the idea that the cigar-shaped interstellar comet Oumuamua “may be a fully operational probe sent intentionally to Earth vicinity by an alien civilization.”
In 2017, the object flew into our solar system, whipped around the sun like a comet, and flew back out. On that departing leg of the journey, it accelerated when it should have been slowing down due to the gravitational pull of the sun. That suggested some propulsion system was at work. It is possible, Loeb and Bialy wrote, that the object is “floating in interstellar space as a debris from an advanced technological equipment.”
Other astronomers dismiss that idea, arguing that Oumuamua was pushed either by solar wind, the storm of charged particles forever streaming from the sun, or by solar radiation pressure, the gentle force imparted by electromagnetic energy when it contacts an object. The object has since soared back into deep space, taking the possibility of any answers with it.
Congress is staying on the UAP case—in its own dilatory way. In 2024, lawmakers took up the UAP Transparency Act, which would mandate declassification of all documents related to UAPs. The bill has not yet become law, and its potential impact has been partly mooted by the White House going ahead and releasing the four tranches of documents on its own.
For now, UAPs remain a riddle. They may be real, they may be illusion, they may simply be artifacts of human desire—something we see because we want to see them. A universe with other life-forms, after all, is a lot less lonely than one in which we are the only world with lights in the windows. The eyewitnesses, of course, would differ—knowing what they saw, believing what they saw, and remaining, in some cases, transformed by what they saw. In time—if the proof is found, if biological intelligence is discovered in the void—we may all be transformed the same way.
First photos of SpaceX lunar rocket crash show blackened hole torn into the moon's surface
New images from South Korea's Danuri lunar orbiter reveal where a runaway SpaceX rocket part slammed into the moon on Wednesday.

In the dead of night on Wednesday (Aug. 5), part of a defunct SpaceX rocket slammed into the moon at more than 5,000 mph (8,000 km/h) — and a Korean lunar satellite has just shared the first images of the aftermath.
A series of photos snapped by South Korea's Danuri lunar orbiter on Wednesday reveal a small, blackened crater at the alleged site where a used Falcon 9 upper stage crashed into the lunar surface around 2:35 a.m. ET. The crash occurred near Einstein crater, on the northwestern limb of the moon, close to the terminator zone where lunar day and night meet. The photos were shared by the Korea AeroSpace Administration on social media on Thursday (Aug. 6).
Because this region was on the sunlit side of the moon at the time, the initial flare from the crash was not visible from Earth; however, scientists at the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile reported seeing evidence of a debris plume lifting off of the lunar surface shortly after the collision, according to the CBC. (At this time, no photos of the debris plume have been released).
A preprint study shared earlier this week predicted that the crash would create a new crater on the moon measuring roughly 90 feet (27 meters) wide and up to 16 feet (5 m) deep — a dent too small to be seen from Earth, even with a good telescope. No measurements of the newfound crater have been shared yet, but they are likely to arrive in the coming days as other lunar orbiters, such as NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, and Earth-based observatories get a chance to examine the crash site.

The pesky piece of space junk that hit the moon on Wednesday is the second (or upper) stage of one of SpaceX's Falcon 9 rockets that launched into space on Jan. 15, 2025. It was carrying a pair of lunar landers: the Blue Ghost lander developed by private company Firefly Aerospace, which successfully touched down on the moon in March 2025; and the Hakuto-R lander developed by Japanese company ispace, which lost contact with Earth and crash-landed on the moon in June 2025.

An ancient piece of the moon found in Africa hints at a violent, long-ago collision
Unlike Falcon 9's first (or lower) stages, which can return to Earth for reuse, the rocket's second stages are discarded in orbit. This rocket piece spent nearly a year drifting in an elliptical orbit around our planet before a combination of solar radiation and the moon's gravitational pull nudged it away from us, according to Live Science's sister site Space.com. In May this year, independent astronomer Bill Gray first predicted the crash and when and where the collision would occur, before other experts confirmed his calculations.
The 4.4-ton (4 metric tons) rocket part is estimated to have struck the moon at roughly 5,400 mph (8,700 km/h). While many times faster than the speed of sound, that’s still much slower than the average meteoroid strike on the moon, making the crash that much harder to see.
This is not the first time that human-made objects have impacted the moon, nor will it be the last. Studying these crashes can lead to important insights about the moon’s composition.
For example, the 2009 crash of a Centaur rocket's upper stage near the moon's south pole was analyzed by NASA's Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite mission, which revealed subsurface ice in the area. As a result, the lunar south pole is now the most coveted location for missions that aim to establish a permanent human presence on the moon.
Studying human-made impacts like these will also be essential for managing the potential risks to future astronauts and missions, like the permanent moon base NASA hopes to build.
"Now that we're in an era where we're going to have more and more astronauts going back to the moon, perhaps permanently, we also want to understand how much of a risk these artificial impacts pose," Benjamin Fernando, a postdoctoral researcher at Los Alamos National Laboratory and co-author of a recent study on the impact, told CBC.
"It presents a different set of hazards than say the Apollo astronauts faced on the lunar surface from the average background meteoroids that are striking the moon every day. And what we want to try and do with this event is understand both the direct [and indirect] hazards."
The sun as you've NEVER seen it: Scientists capture the highest resolution observations of our home star's surface
Scientists have captured the highest–resolution observations of the sun ever taken, revealing astonishing new details.
These incredible videos and photos were taken using the NSF Inouye Solar Telescope in Hawaii, the world's most powerful solar telescope.
They show a magnetically turbulent area on the edge of a cool sunspot, in the visible outer layer of our home star.
Combined with cutting–edge simulations, researchers say their new observations reveal something that has never been seen before.
In a new paper, published in Nature, the scientists describe the first 'unambiguous' identification of a phenomenon called 'Kelvin–Helmholtz instability' (KHI).
These are swirling patterns that look like whirlpools on the sun's surface, which form when fluids slide past each other at different speeds.
According to the researchers, these spiralling vortices could be the key to understanding the most violent solar weather.
That could help astronomers better predict the solar flares and coronal mass ejections that threaten to knock out satellite and communication systems on Earth.

Scientists have captured the highest–resolution images of the sun's surface ever taken (pictured), revealing patterns that have never been seen before
The distinctive spiral patterns of KHI can be found everywhere from the smallest ocean waves to the interactions between solar wind and planetary magnetic fields.
However, until now, astronomers haven't had powerful enough tools to spot them in the sun's outer layers.
Jacqueline Keane, NSF Programme Director for the National Solar Observatory, says: 'For decades, seeing these vortices at such tiny scales remained elusive.
'cientists combined observations from the Inouye telescope with the results of highly specialised computer simulations.
ThBy pairing a massive four–meter mirror with state–of–the–art optics and instruments, the NSF Inouye Solar Telescope delivers the resolving power needed to reveal these ultrafine details for the first time.'
Sese simulations help researchers understand what they are seeing in the real observations by revealing things that would otherwise be hidden or impossible to measure.
In both the telescope images and the simulations, scientists found dozens of KHI vortices on the edges of magnetically unstable areas with strikingly similar characteristics.
This not only showed that scientists' computer simulations were right, but also helps to explain how these never–before–seen processes actually function.

Scientists describe the first 'unambiguous' identification of a phenomenon called 'Kelvin–Helmholtz instability' (KHI), small–scale vortices of plasma that occur when two fluids slide past each other

These incredible photos were taken using the four–meter NSF Inouye Solar Telescope (pictured) in Hawaii, the world's most powerful solar telescope
The researchers found that the sun's constantly bubbling surface interacts with magnetic structures, causing neighbouring layers of plasma to move past each other.
That difference in speed between the passing fluids then creates the conditions that trigger KHI.
Dr David Boboltz, Deputy Director at the National Solar Observatory, says that this is a 'major step forward in our understanding of the dynamics and evolution of solar and stellar plasma, and will serve as a basis for future discoveries'.
What makes this discovery so exciting is that scientists think KHI could be the engine which drives some of the sun's most violent behaviour.
Solar flares and coronal mass ejections fling vast quantities of radiation and charged particles into space, some of which end up flying in Earth's direction.
When these waves of solar energy collide with the planet, they can cause serious disruption for modern technology, including power grids, satellites, GPS navigation and global communications.
The leading theory on how the sun builds up magnetic energy for these explosions is called 'flux braiding.'
The idea is that as magnetic field lines twist around each other, like braiding strands of hair, they build up tension and create an unstable structure.

Researchers compared the images with highly specialised computer simulations to help understand dynamics that would otherwise be impossible to measure

Researchers say these spiralling whirlpools could be the engines that drive the most violent space weather, including solar flares that can knock out communications on Earth
Eventually, the field lines 'snap' and reconnect into a new, stable shape, releasing a burst of energy out into space.
However, what scientists don't yet fully understand is what causes this twisting and braiding to occur in the first place.
Now, the researchers say that the small swirling patterns produced by KHI could be the key.
Since the swirls appear to be happening everywhere on the sun's surface where magnetic fields are strong enough, they could be the 'engine' that twists magnetic field lines and drives space weather.
Similarly, these swirls could also explain how the outer layers of the sun become so hot.
That would solve the longstanding puzzle of why stars' coronas can reach over a million degrees Kelvin.
But with the first direct observations of these patterns only just being published, a lot more investigation will be needed until scientists understand their mechanics fully.
Dr Friedrich Wöger, Senior Scientist at the National Solar Observatory, says: 'We are only at the beginning of recognising the wide–reaching impact the discovery of Kelvin–Helmholtz instability has on our understanding.'

Did Trump just release UFO secrets- or the ultimate distraction? What’s inside the new ‘UFO files’&imwidth=800&imheight=600&format=webp&quality=medium)
The Trump administration has released the first batch of declassified “UFO files” featuring alleged UAP videos, Apollo mission transcripts and witness testimonies, sparking debate over aliens, conspiracy theories and political distraction.
The Trump administration, on Friday, May 8, 2026, released the first batch of “UFO files". The files purportedly claim to have released 162 never-before-seen videos, photographs and witness testimonies tied to Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP). The declassified materials are publicly available through a dedicated portal hosted by the US Department of War. The move is part of the initiative known as PURSUE (Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters) involving multiple US federal agencies.
Among the most controversial materials were images and transcripts linked to NASA's Apollo 17, Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 moon missions. In the Apollo 12 transcript, it reads “the pilot of the Lunar Module (LMP-LM), Astronaut Alan L. Bean, described observing particles and flashes of light 'sailing off in space' via the onboard Alignment Optical Telescope (AOT). He characterised these phenomena as ‘escaping the Moon.’” Another such testimony from the Apollo 12 mission reads, “Mission Commander, Charles ‘Pete’ Conrad, described observing floating debris outside the lunar module, which had been illuminated by the module’s onboard tracking light. At 06:00:21:51, Conrad assessed that the tracking light had burnt out because he could no longer see the debris from the module.” Another such testimony from the Apollo 17 mission transcript mentions astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt described "very bright particles" and "jagged, angular fragments" moving past their windows. There are several other reports of UAP sightings over Georgia, Turkmenistan, the UAE, and videos of suggested UAPs moving over the Gulf of Oman. Other documents include visual reconstruction of eyewitness testimony; however, none of the files has been verified, and the Trump administration quite similar to the Epstein files has left bread crumbs for the public to fiddle around. It's like another task of augmented reality or a gameshow where the observers are invited to solve the puzzle.
The White House described the documents as “never-before-seen", while Trump directed people's attention towards the files he did not personally claim the existence of aliens, stating that the public should "make up their own minds". US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth claimed that the release is a move to end "decades of public suspicion" and provide "maximum disclosure".
Marjorie Taylor Greene, once a Trump loyalist, is now a vocal critic of Trump, launched a harsh criticism of the move by the administration, calling it a tactic to get people “so excited that you forgot you are paying over $4.50/gallon” and diverting attention from the Epstein files. While Trump's critics and fanatics battle over the credibility of different sets of files, Trump can use this ultimate weapon of mass distraction and, at the same time, target the credibility of some of the tragic crimes of the 21st century. In 1994, Canadian conspiracy theorist and journalist Serge Monast claimed about an “Operation Blue Beam” which asserts that the US will stage an alien attack or supernatural event to manipulate people to establish a "New World Order" under a totalitarian government.
Humanity and popular culture's fascination with aliens has made it relatively smooth to jump from unknown to extraterrestrial beings. Just because a phenomenon can't be explained does not imply it's linked to extraterrestrial beings. Neil Patrick Harris claimed that “theory of the gap” can not substitute science. Scientist and host of the show Cosmos, Carl Sagan, once said, “extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence”. Analysts have urged people to “take it with a grain of salt”. Dr Sean Kirkpatrick, who served as the first director of the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), the Pentagon’s official UFO-hunting unit, warned against the "erosion of critical thinking" regarding UAP claims.

EXCLUSIVE - UFO disclosure movement's astonishing new Trump claims: Secret Oval Office meetings... Air Force One plan... and 'imminent' next move
Key figures in the UFO disclosure movement are intensifying their demands that the president reveal what the US government supposedly knows about nonhuman life.
One influential entrepreneur claims to have recently met with President Donald Trump on the issue, and another UFO enthusiast believes that more figures in the movement are now descending on Washington, DC, fueling speculation of an 'imminent' announcement from the White House.
Billionaire businessman Robert Bigelow, who has spent years funding UFO research, claimed that he met with Trump in the Oval Office and urged him to make a declaration about nonhuman life.
He told KLAS 8 News Now on Tuesday that he gave the president a statement to read to journalists on Air Force One: 'A non-human intelligent presence has been on Earth for a very long time using spacecraft and with performances completely beyond our capabilities and our human physics.'
Bigelow said he advised Trump to pause at the aircraft door, turn toward the assembled reporters and deliver that single confirmation without elaborating further. The statement, he said, would achieve both disclosure and official confirmation in one sentence, something he said no previous president has been willing to provide.
Filmmaker Mark Christopher Lee, who previously claimed Trump has a disclosure speech 'written and ready,' told the Daily Mail on Tuesday that he believes an announcement will come 'potentially within the next 48 hours.'
White House officials, however, told the Daily Mail that no presidential speech on the subject is planned.
According to Lee, any such address would likely amount to a 'soft disclosure,' potentially acknowledging that some UFO incidents involved spacecrafts and possibly beings of nonhuman origin. He also claimed that the speech could reference historic UFO cases and call for greater transparency on the issue.

In February, Trump called on the Pentagon to release government files related to UFOs
Filmmaker Mark Christopher Lee, who previously claimed Trump has a disclosure speech 'written and ready,' told the Daily Mail on Tuesday that he believes a speech will come 'potentially within the next 48 hours'
'Whether President Trump will go as far as explicitly acknowledging recovered craft or biological material remains to be seen,' Lee said.
'My sources have always indicated there would be significant pushback from certain private and institutional interests, so I expect the final version to be carefully worded.'
Lee previously claimed to the Daily Mail that a supposed draft of Trump's speech referred to several of the most closely scrutinized UFO encounters of the past 80 years, including the US Navy's 2004 encounter with the so-called Tic Tac craft and a series of unexplained objects pursued by fighter pilots along the East Coast in 2015.
Lee also claimed that one version of the speech referred to forensic tests performed on entities purportedly recovered from crashed UFOs, with the results supposedly indicating that the beings did not originate on Earth.
There is no publicly available evidence supporting that claim, and the Daily Mail could not independently verify it.
The US government has maintained that it has found no verifiable evidence that UFO sightings represent extraterrestrial life or that aliens have visited Earth.
Lee's latest claims come after past predictions that never materialized.
In early July, he suggested Trump could deliver the alleged address during the NATO summit in Turkey on July 8, the 79th anniversary of the Roswell UFO incident.
The 1947 event in Roswell, New Mexico, involved the crash and recovery of what was said at the time to be a US Air Force high-altitude weather balloon, but was initially identified as a 'flying disc,' sparking conspiracy theories of extraterrestrial life and 'flying saucers.'
Almost 50 years later, the government said that it was actually debris from a US spy balloon used to try to search for evidence of Soviet Union nuclear testing, though UFO enthusiasts claimed such explanations were a cover-up.
The anniversary of the Roswell incident last month passed without an announcement from Trump.

The White House has released four batches of UFO files since May. Above is a still from a video taken in 2020 over the Atlantic Ocean, which was released in the latest tranche in July
The president's daughter-in-law Lara Trump said in February this year that she was given reason to believe that an address had been prepared and was ready to be delivered publicly.
Trump has supported greater transparency around UFOs, although he has stopped short of describing himself as a believer in extraterrestrial visitation.
'Am I a believer? No, I probably can't say I am. But I have met with people who are serious people who say there are some really strange things that they see flying around out there,' Trump said during a 2024 appearance on YouTuber-turned-WWE star Logan Paul's podcast.
In February, Trump directed the Pentagon to declassify government materials on UFOs, resulting in the publication of multiple tranches of materials - a move that Lee had predicted in January.
None of the files released so far, however, have provided definitive evidence that extraterrestrial beings have visited Earth or that the US government possesses alien spacecraft.
'While past administrations have sought to discredit or dissuade the American people, the president is focused on providing maximum disclosure to the public,' White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly said in a statement in May.
Ancient Egypt mystery deepens after major discovery at Giza©The Daily Digest
Fresh insight draws intrigue
Egyptian officials announced a major archaeological discovery in 2023: a previously unknown corridor hidden inside the Great Pyramid of Giza. The remarkable find offers new clues about the pyramid’s design and could help researchers better understand how the ancient monument was constructed and what purpose its hidden spaces may have served.

An international scientific mission
This secret room was discovered as part of an international research project called ScanPyramids. Since 2015, German, French, Japanese and Canadian universities have been collaborating with Egyptian archaeologists to study the pyramids and learn more about the construction methods used to build the pyramids more than 4,500 years ago.

Look through the stones
ScanPyramids' mission is to use non-invasive technologies to look through the stones to discover previously unknown internal structures within the pyramids.

"We didn't want to dig indiscriminately"
Ground-penetrating radar and ultrasonic testing are the techniques used to discover this space through the stones. "We already knew in 2017 that there was a cavity behind it, we just didn't want to dig indiscriminately (...), so additional measurements were needed," explains research engineer Sébastien Procureur, who worked on the project.

A space that remains mysterious
"Discovering an empty space in a pyramid is something special," explains German professor Christian Große, leader of the research team. "But the fact that this space is large enough to accommodate several people makes it even more important."

What was it for?
According to Zahi Hawass, a famous Egyptian archaeologist, it is "very possible" that this room is "protecting something". It could even house a huge treasure: "In my opinion, it protects the true burial chamber of the Egyptian monarch Khufu," adds the Egyptologist.

"There is not the direct connection that we could hope for"
Sébastien Procureur remains more skeptical: "That's a bit of the bad news: there isn't the hoped-for direct connection to the 'Big Void' (the so-called 'great void' at the heart of the pyramid where the pharaoh's body is said to be)". However, research is ongoing to clarify this question.

The Great Pyramid of Khufu
The Pyramid of Khufu is the largest of the Pyramids of Giza. For thousands of years it was the tallest, most voluminous and most massive man-made structure in the world. It was built about 45 centuries ago (ca. 2551-2528 BC) to house the body of the pharaoh Khufu, the second ruler of the dynasty.

A fascinating construction
An achievement that has always impressed and fascinated scientists. Its many architectural features are further mysteries that have not been solved until now. The researchers' only certainty today is the relatively short construction period: just 25 years.

The existence of the 'Big Void' was discovered in 2017
The "Big Void" is one of the questions that are still unanswered about the Khufu pyramid. Its existence was discovered by the Scan Pyramids teams in 2017. It is a "cavity at least 35 meters long and about 3 meters high," as Sébastien Procureur explains in an interview for Sciences et Avenir magazine.

What is in the 'Big Void'?
Archaeologists don't yet know what's in the 'Big Void'. Hypotheses vary, it could simply be a cavity formed during the construction of the pyramid or, what scientists hope, the real burial chamber of the pharaoh Khufu.

The Mystery of Pharaoh Khufu
The tomb of Khufu could contain all the treasures of this ancient king, but also the corpse of the pharaoh, which has not yet been discovered.

The research goes on
Only one thing is certain: the pyramid has not yet revealed all its secrets to us. The Scan Pyramids teams intend to deepen their research to gather new data and make more discoveries.
