The founders of quantum physics contemplated the philosophical implications of their findings. They were astounded that the thoughts of the observer seemed to influence the matter being observed. Principles believed to stabilize physical reality didn’t seem to apply.

The power of the human mind to influence physical reality has been recognized in various fields. For example, the effectiveness of placebo treatments has brought the role of human consciousness to bear on conventional modern medicine. 

Dr. Robert Jahn served as an engineering dean at Princeton University while studying for decades the impact of human thought on the functioning of mechanical devices. In his book “Margins of Reality,” he reopens the questions once raised by Max Planck, Erwin Schrödinger, and other influential scientists—questions of human consciousness, which Jahn says modern students seem to pay less attention to than the physical data collected by these science greats.

Jahn, Planck, and Schrödinger are not the only scientists to have contemplated the role of human consciousness in science. Many have suggested that scientists must face the enigma and challenges of understanding consciousness for science to make it’s next big leap. Here are the views of eight scientists. 

1. Max Planck, Founding Father of Quantum Mechanics

Planck is regarded as one of the founders of quantum mechanics. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918 for “the services he rendered to the advancement of Physics by his discovery of energy quanta,” according to the Nobel Prize website.

In “A Survey of Physical Theory,” Planck wrote: “All ideas we form of the outer world are ultimately only reflections of our own perceptions. Can we logically set up against our self-consciousness a ‘Nature’ independent of it? Are not all so-called natural laws really nothing more or less than expedient rules with which we associate the run of our perceptions as exactly and conveniently as possible?”

2. Erwin Schrödinger, Nobel Prize Winning Physicist

Erwin Schrödinger was a physicist and theoretical biologist. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1933 with Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac “for the discovery of new productive forms of atomic theory,” according to the Nobel Prize website.

Jahn quotes Schrödinger: “Consciousness is that by which this world first becomes manifest, by which indeed, we can quite calmly say, it first becomes present; that the world consists of the elements of consciousness.”

3. Robert G. Jahn, Princeton Engineering Dean

Professor of aerospace science and dean emeritus of the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Princeton University Robert G. Jahn began studying psychic phenomena some 30 years ago.

Jahn suggested in “Margins of Reality” that the study of consciousness may start by quantifying consciousness in statistical form. He has conducted many experiments on the ability of the mind to influence machines. We will give a very simplified overview of his experiments to illustrate:

He used a random event generator (REG) that can produce bits representing either 0 or 1. Study participants would try to influence the REG either way, toward 0 or toward 1. If the events showed a significant favor in the direction of the person’s will above what chance would dictate, it suggested the person’s will influenced the machine. Human intent was thus boiled down to a measurable, binary form. With many tests, Jahn built up a mass of results that could then become reliable statistics.

He noted, however, “Since most established behavior in consciousness-related domains can only be quantitatively represented in statistical terms, and since all statistical formats are themselves constructions of consciousness, it follows that the validity and limitations of the statistical representations must themselves be well defined and well understood before an anomaly can be claimed.”

4. David Chalmers, Cognitive Scientist and Philosopher at NYU

Chalmers is a philosophy professor and head of consciousness studies at the Australian National University and at New York University.

In a TED Talk earlier this year, he said science is at a sort of impasse in its study of consciousness, and “radical ideas may be needed,” to move forward. “I think that we may need one or two ideas that may initially seem crazy.”

In the past, physics had to incorporate newly discovered fundamental building blocks, such as electromagnetism, that were unexplained by more basic principles. He wonders whether consciousness is another such building block.
“Physics is curiously abstract,” he said. “It describes the structure of reality using a bunch of equations, but it doesn’t tell us about the reality that underlies it.” He quoted a question posed by Stephen Hawking: “What puts the fire into the equations?”

Maybe consciousness puts the fire into the equations, Chalmers said. The equations stay as they are, but we see them as means for describing the flux of consciousness.

“Consciousness doesn’t dangle outside the physical world as some kind of extra, it’s there right at its heart,” he said.

5. Imants Barušs, Psychologist, Member of Society for Consciousness Studies

Dr. Imants Barušs is a psychology professor at the University of Western Ontario in Canada, who teaches courses on consciousness. He studied engineering as an undergraduate student and completed a masters degree in mathematics before receiving his Ph.D. in psychology. 

At the inaugural meeting of the Society for Consciousness Studies at The California Institute of Integral Studies on May 31, Barušs presented a paper outlining his vision for consciousness studies and his reasons for supporting it.

He highlighted the importance of such research, and even a paradigm shift, by arguing that strictly materialist science is contributing to mental health problems among youth. Many depressed teens who hurt themselves don’t possess the “hallmarks of a psychiatric disorder,” wrote Baruss, quoting a Toronto Star article titled “Psychiatrists see rise in suicidal teenagers.” “Instead they seem to be suffering an existential crisis that is sort of ‘I’m empty, I don’t know who I am, I don’t know where I’m going, I don’t have any grounding and I don’t know how to manage my negative feelings.'”

Barušs wrote: “Scientific materialism assures us that reality is a meaningless, incidental, mechanistic, collocation of improbable events.”

He summarized some of the ways in which the materialist interpretation of reality has already broken down: quantum events are seen to be non-deterministic; time is no longer linear, as effects have been shown to precede their causes; particles change position depending on where one looks or what one decides to measure.

Finally, he said, “Materialism cannot explain … the sense of existence that people have for themselves.”

He hopes the Society for Consciousness Studies can promote open inquiry. Collectively, scientists interested in this line of inquiry could work to find funding or support those who are censured by their colleagues or employers.

6. William Tiller, Professor Emeritus at Stanford University

Tiller is a fellow at the American Academy for the Advancement of Science, and professor emeritus of materials science at Stanford University.

Tiller has discovered a new level of substance in the empty space between the fundamental electric particles that make up our normal electric atoms and molecules, in the vacuum. This kind of substance is usually invisible to us, and to our measurement devices.

But, he has discovered that human intention can affect this substance in such a way that it interacts with the substances we can see or that we are able to measure.

“Consciousness lifts the higher thermodynamic free energy state [of the vacuum level], then we can access the physics of the vacuum,” Tiller says. “Accessing that new physics allows intention to bring forth effects you wouldn’t imagine.”

The consciousness can, in a way, affect or interact with a power greater than anything conventional instruments have been able to measure thus far.

7. Bernard Beitman, Psychiatrist, University of Virginia

Beitman is a psychiatrist forging the emerging discipline of Coincidence Studies. He is a graduate of Yale and Stanford and is the former chair of psychiatry at the University of Missouri–Columbia.

In a 2011 paper, Beitman wrote: “One of the biggest challenges in the development of the new discipline of Coincidence Studies is providing a systematic place in scientific research for subjectivity and for human consciousness. Meaningful coincidences depend upon the mind of the observer. The question of how to develop methods and an accompanying technical language that includes and respects the subjective element built into the fabric of coincidence needs to be answered.”

8. Henry P. Stapp, Physicist Specializing in Quantum Mechanics, University of California–Berkeley

Stapp is a theoretical physicist at the University of California–Berkeley who worked with some of the founding fathers of quantum mechanics.

In a paper titled “Compatibility of Contemporary Physical Theory With Personality Survival,” Stapp looked at how the mind may exist separately from the brain.

A scientist physically affects quantum systems by choosing which properties to study. Similarly, an observer can hold in place a chosen brain activity that would otherwise be fleeting. This shows, said Stapp, that the mind and brain may not be one and the same.

He said scientists should regard “the physical effects of consciousness as a physical problem that needs to be answered in dynamical terms.”

UFO researchers seek gov't 'truths'

The truth is out there somewhere and if the U.S. government is covering it up, UFO researchers want to know.

They are also encouraged by the fact that Hillary Clinton has said she’ll reveal what she can about the subject if she is elected president – unless it threatens national security, Winnipeg’s Grant Cameron said.

Cameron will be one of seven experts who will address the very first Canadian Public Hearing on UFOs in Brantford, Ont., June 25.

“We need openness on this issue, it’s time to stop playing around,” said Cameron, who has written several books on it, including ‘UFOs, Area 51, and Government Informants.’

“It’s important because, if you look at the implications, the aliens are giving the message that we’re destroying our world,” said Cameron, 62. “And that we’re not the only fish in the fish bowl.”

It could also unite the world against a possible threat instead of people fighting each other, he added.

Cameron first got into UFO research after he believes he saw one during the infamous Charlie Red Star phenomenon around Carman 41 years ago.

“I didn’t really think I’d see anything, but then it flew right in front of our car,” said Cameron, who retired as a University of Manitoba facilities manager six years ago.

But he’s not trying to prove what he saw.

“The answer’s not determined by what you see in the sky, you need to get some better evidence,” Cameron said.

That evidence, he believes, can be found in American files on UFOs. In fact, Cameron recently won two international awards for his research of presidential files on extraterrestrials.

Even John Podesta, Clinton’s campaign manager who also worked for Bill Clinton when he was the president, believes there has been a cover-up and wants it to end, Cameron claims.

The hearing is part of the Alien Cosmic Expo in Brantford that weekend.

“We want the Canadian government to do more on this and if they don’t, they’re part of the cover-up,” said Bob Mitchell, one one of the event’s organizers.

Also speaking will be: former Deputy Prime Minister Paul Hellyer, who will discuss Canada’s knowledge of the subject, Richard Dolan, Steven Bassett, Nick Pope, Stanton Friedman and Travis Walton.

Chris Rutkowski, a well-known local UFO researcher, got a late invitation but was not interested in attending.

“I don’t think there’s anything that’s being kept hidden and, even if there was, I don’t think Hillary Clinton would release it,” Rutkowski said.

The Canadian public hearing on UFOs is meeting in Brantford on Saturday, June 25. Here’s what they’ll be discussing:

Thanks to the hit movie starring Will Smith and Tommie Lee Jones everybody has heard of the Men in Black. The movie proposed that their job is to protect the earth from the "scum of the universe." Well, that's just movie talk. The truth is a lot harder to get a handle on. Nobody knows if these guys are government agents, aliens in disguise, or just a group of intelligence operatives trying to keep a secret.

Here's what I do know: They're real. They generally show up when ordinary citizens have an extraordinary sighting or encounter with a flying saucer or its occupants. They seem bent on intimidating those individuals into not talking about what they have seen. They even attempt to do this with law-enforcement officers and military personnel. There have been hundreds if not thousands of incidents reported about these men in black.

What "Black" Means 
The word 'black' when used in this context means covert, undercover, not seen. When a person enters the intelligence community and becomes involved in operations and projects, all their government files basically disappear. They are no longer accessible through the normal channels. When this happens it is said the person has "gone black."

Some people think the MIBs are Aliens 
Complicating matters is the fact that many times it appears that the men in black are humanoid-type aliens masquerading as humans. Many people in the military are aware that this may the be case (in some instances).

Are some Men in Black Aliens?

Dr. Herbert Hopkins 
Dr. Hopkins was actively investigating a UFO abduction case in 1976 when one evening during the summer a stranger called him on the phone and asked if he could come by and talk to him about the case. This was despite the fact that the case had not been publicized at all. Hopkins agreed, hung up the phone, and immediately walked to his door to turn on the porch light so the caller could see the steps when he arrived. Hopkins was surprised to see a man walking up the stairs of the porch as he was turning on the light. He was shocked when the man introduced himself as the person who had just called him. (There were no cellular phones in 1976.)

The Black Suit Routine 
The man was dressed in black suit, black tie, black hat, and gray gloves. In the summertime! The man's skin was a pale sickly color and he appeared to be wearing bright red lipstick, a fact which turned out to be true as Hopkins later watched some of the lipstick rub onto the man's gray glove.

Vanished Into Thin Air 
The man asked Hopkins to take out the two coins that were in Hopkins' pocket. Stunned, Hopkins did it. He told Hopkins to watch the coins in his hand. The two coins simply vanished into thin air! Then the man told him, "Neither you nor anyone else on this planet will ever see those coins again."

The man then said his "energy was running low" and left. Shortly after stepping off Hopkins' porch, the man himself disappeared.

When the Scare Started 
The first widely acknowledged case of Men In Black intimidating UFO witnesses occurred in 1953. A fellow by the name of Albert K. Bender was the editor of a magazine called Space Review. He was also the founder of an organization called the International Flying Saucer Bureau.

During the summer of 1953 Bender apparently discovered some vital information pointing to the cover-up of the existence of flying saucers by the U.S. government. He had written several articles scheduled to appear in the next issue of his magazine. The next thing he knew, three guys show up at his door all dressed in black: black suits, black hats, and sunglasses. They told him they had read his article, even though it had not yet been published. They told him his information was accurate, but that he better not publish the article. In fact, they told him that he'd better not publish anything more about flying saucers. They said, "We advise those engaged in saucer work to please be very cautious." They basically scared him so badly that Bender officially retired from UFO investigations.

Super Secret ' Man In Black'

Other MIB Reports 

A teenager is threatened by MIBs and has photos of flying saucers seized from him.

MIBs make a coin disappear from a UFO witness and tell him, "Your heart will do the same if you talk."

A former Air Force officer who learned about information on extraterrestrials from NASA was harassed, tranquilized, and interrogated.

Even the Military Doesn't Know Who MIB's Are 
In 1967 the United States Air Force expressed concern about finding out more about these guys in black who were going around scaring people and saying they were from the U.S. armed services. Here's a statement by Colonel George P. Freeman, the spokesperson for Project Blue Book at the Pentagon:

"Mysterious men dressed in Air Force uniforms or all in black and bearing impressive credentials from government agencies have been silencing UFO witnesses. We have checked a number of these cases, and these men are not connected to the Air Force in any way. We haven't been able to find out anything about these men. By posing as Air Force officers and government agents, they are committing a Federal offense. We would sure like to catch one, unfortunately the trail is always too cold by the time we hear about these cases, but we are still trying."

The Joint Chiefs of Staff are in the Dark Too! 
Assistant Vice Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force Lt. General Hewitt T. Wheless sent a memo on March 1, 1967 to various agencies in the Department of Defense. Here's what it said:

"Information, not verifiable, has reached Hq.USAF that persons claiming to represent the Air Force or other Defense establishments have contacted citizens who have sighted unidentified flying objects. In one reported case, an individual in civilian clothes, who represented himself as a member of NORAD, demanded and received photos belonging to a private citizen. In another, a person in an Air Force uniform approached local police and other citizens who had sighted a UFO, assembled them in a school room and told them that they did not see what they thought they saw and that they should not talk to anyone about the sighting. All military and civilian personnel and particularly information officers and UFO investigating officers who hear of such reports should immediately notify their local OSI offices."

Three Real Cases 
Here are three encounters with the Men in Black that were told to me personally. In each case the person told me about this event without my initiating the conversation on this topic. Each person asked that I not use his or her real name if I told anyone else. In honoring those requests I'm using a pseudonym for the individual. Understandably, there seems to be a need to tell someone about what happened. With the secrecy and intimidation still surrounding any event that has to do with flying saucers or alien beings, people who have these encounters generally don't trust telling someone who doesn't have a clue that these guys even exist.

Larry 
Larry approached me following a meeting on UFOs. He was about twenty-five years old, casually but nicely dressed. He walked up to me and said, "You know, I had something very strange happen to me and my buddy. I don't like to talk about it because it kind of scares me." So I asked him what happened. He was clearly nervous and even stuttered a little. Here's what he told me:

Late one night in a state of semi-sleep, he felt a presence in his bedroom. The "presence" communicated with him and let him know it was from another world. Larry asked why all the secrecy and if they were real why they didn't just show up in the daytime. They told him that the next time he was with his best friend (whom they called by name) he would indeed see them and he would know it was them.

Larry said the entire conversation did not exactly take place using words. It was more like he understood what they were thinking and feeling without actual words. I know it sounds weird, but this is very common in human/alien interactions. For the most part, none of the aliens use verbal language, it is all telepathic, and sometimes it's in the human's own language. Many times it is a combination of feeling, "a knowingness", and understanding on a level we have not yet discovered how to describe.

When Larry woke in the morning he wasn't sure if he had been dreaming or not, but the experience was so vivid and unlike any dream he had ever had before that he thought about it daily for months afterwards.

Larry's best friend was now in the military and he didn't see him for months. His friend returned home just in time for the Fourth of July, and they decided to go down to a local park where some of his family members were holding a big picnic. The two of them were just kind of standing around, when a black van pulled up about fifty yards away. The two front doors opened and two men dressed all in black suits with black hats and dark sunglasses got out. Larry was startled because he began to remember his "dream." The two men opened the sliding door on the side of the van and two more guys got out. They too were head-to-toe in black, with shades.

Larry said, "First of all, it was hot. It was the middle of the afternoon and well over 80 degrees, and these guys were in black, with hats! Next, the two guys who got out of the side looked different. They didn't look human. I can't describe it, but their arms looked too long or something. Then they sat down at a picnic table and they all turned around and looked right at me and my buddy. After that he got real quiet. Then they just got back in the van and drove off. My buddy won't talk about it. He pretends like nothing happened, but I know he saw them and he knows I know." 

Christine 
Christine was a career military person. She is a pilot and flew in the Armed Forces of the United States. She is even a member of the now infamous "Tailhook Association." For those who don't know, Tailhook is an association for Navy Fighter pilots. The name Tailhook comes from the hook on the back of fighter jets that is used to catch the planes when they land on an aircraft carrier. Here is what Christine told me:

"One night a large UFO showed up and hovered over the base for about forty minutes. Everybody saw it. We were all pilots and we knew it wasn't ours. We could also tell because the brass didn't know what it was either. When it left, it took off at phenomenal speed. The next day a bunch of black sedans showed up on the base. Each one had four guys all dressed in black with hats. They got out and went to every building on the base and "encouraged" us not to talk about what we saw. I'm not easily intimidated. I know how to use a firearm and I've flown in combat conditions, but these guys meant business." 

Colonel Rogers 
Colonel Rogers had retired from the military and lived alone. Rogers had mentioned to some people he had seen UFOs and his work in the military had assured them that they were real. Several days later a man dressed in black showed up at his door. When Rogers opened it the man began to warn him about not talking about UFOs. Rogers told the man, "OK, just a minute." He excused himself went into his bedroom and came back to the front door with a loaded .45 pistol. He cocked it, pointed it at the man's head and said, "I don't know if you are CIA, NSA, or an alien, but somebody will have a lot of explaining to do if I blow your head off. Now get out of here."

The next day another man showed up wearing regular business attire (no black suit with shades). He hailed the colonel from the front yard with his arms raised, said he was unarmed, and asked if he could talk to him briefly. The colonel allowed the guy to approach. The guy said, "Look Colonel, we're sorry, no more guys will show up at your house. Some of this UFO information is still classified and we would appreciate it if you just didn't talk too much about it. OK? Thanks." And, then the guy left.

Black Helicopters 
These are similar to the Men in Black. Abductees, contactees, and people who have UFO encounters often report being followed by black helicopters. Once again, no one is sure if these are government aircraft or alien craft disguised as helicopters. There are cases which point to both.

One contactee, author Kim Carlsberg, has recorded being followed by black helicopters on the days following a nighttime abduction experience.

It's Probably the Army 
Unconfirmed sources say these black helicopters belong to the U.S. Army, 160th SOAR Division. The helicopters are black, or in some cases a very dark green, because they are "stealth aircraft" technology and cannot be detected by radar, just like the stealth bombers and fighters. Apparently these craft are also made available to other government agencies, including but not limited to the CIA, FEMA, and NSA.

FEMA Again 
I mention this again. FEMA stands for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. This is the organization you hear about on your local news whenever there has been a hurricane, tornado, earthquake, flood, or any other major catastrophe. FEMA manages the funds that are doled out by the government to states and individuals to help them recover from these events.

In looking into covert or "black" operations, FEMA comes up again and again. It appears that FEMA is used as a cover to direct funds into these covert operations. Can I prove it? No. However, FEMA turns up again and again from all kinds of different sources whenever government secrecy and funding is the topic. No other "civilian" agency does. Not the FDA, FAA, or USDA! Not only that, but after any major disaster people seem to have a hard time getting relief from this agency, as if there were not enough money there. Let's get a budget review done of FEMA funds and check it out!

A Personal Note on FEMA

Shortly after the printed version of my book was published, a close friend of mine named Kevin read it and then told me the following:

Kevin said that his dad had worked for FEMA for years. However, he didn't know exactly what his dad did. Unlike other dads, his father never spoke about his work and he would often take short unexplained business trips out of town. Kevin always felt that there was much more to his fathers job at FEMA than just helping out with civilian emergencies. 

One day Kevin was watching the news on TV with his dad and he asked him, "Dad, what is it exactly, that you do?" At the time, the televsion was giving a news broadcast showing then President Richard Nixon and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. Kevin's father pointed at the screen and said:
"You see those two fellas there? I was in the same room with them yesterday." That was the end of the conversation. Kevin's dad never said another word about his job or his duties at FEMA.

No More UFOs

A suggestion: try to stop using the term UFO. I know this is a tall order. UFO is part of our national vocabulary and is ingrained in our culture. Even on this website I use the term because it's easy to say and write quickly. But, whenever possible, try to use the term flying saucer or alien spacecraft instead. Here are some reasons why:

UFO originally meant Unconventional flying object, not unidentified flying object. The military has known since the 1940s that these were intelligently piloted craft. To confirm this, simply review the Air Force intelligence documents from 1958, which appear in the Government Information section.

The term flying saucer has been used in hundreds of government and military intelligence documents precisely because they are known to be flying, piloted craft. A change in mind-set is needed. It is not just a matter of semantics; it is similar to the difference between referring to someone as a victim or a survivor.

If you saw what appeared to be a boat several miles out in the ocean, you would not say, "Hey, I see a UFO, an unidentified floating object." You would make the assumption it is an example of an intelligently piloted craft that we commonly call a boat. Whether you were actually right or wrong is beside the point. It may actually have been a whale or a buoy. However, you empowered yourself to make an intelligent assessment and committed to it. When you say this you are saying you have some idea of what you saw and people will generally take your assessment at face value.

However, when you say you saw a UFO, you are confirming in your own words that what you saw is unidentified; you have no idea what you saw, or if you saw anything at all, so why should anybody listen?

Craft, Not Clouds

Flying saucers are not like clouds just drifting by. They are more like cars on a freeway; they contain "people" (alien beings) in them and they are on their way to or from a specific destination. Please spend some time thinking about this, since it is an important concept. When you fully embrace this idea you will begin to see the flying-saucer phenomenon in a new light, and some more of the pieces will begin to fall into place.

Origin of the Term

The first reported modern-day sighting of flying saucers occurred on June 24, 1947. A private pilot, Kenneth Arnold, spotted nine disk-shaped objects flying in formation over the Cascade Mountains in the state of Washington. Based on this sighting the term flying saucers was born. The following July 29, 1947, Arnold saw approximately twenty-five more alien spacecraft that flew within four hundred yards of his plane. An official CIA account of Kenneth Arnold's sightings is included in the Government Documents section.

Keep in mind the year these sightings occurred: 1947. In 1947 flying craft of any kind, even airplanes, were rarely seen by citizens. In 1947 it is estimated that less than 1 percent of the American population had ever seen a helicopter. And, for all intents and purposes, there was no television.

Sizes and Shapes of Flying Saucers

Besides the classic "saucer" shape of these alien craft, there are many other forms that have been seen by civilians and noted in military documents. Alien spacecraft sightings have also been reported in ancient texts as well as in the Bible. There are as many configurations of craft as there are shapes of cars and trucks on our planet. Here are some of the ones seen most often:

Saucer or Disk-shaped Craft

These come in different configurations and sizes. Some have small domes or cupolas on top, and some do not. The dome configuration can be rounded or square. These are known to be primarily scout ships and short-range research vehicles.

Cigar-shaped Craft

These vehicles are generally larger than saucers. They are known to be small mother ships containing eight to ten saucer-shaped craft. They are long and cylindrical with a taper at both ends; thus the name.

Triangle-shaped Craft

These ships are huge; many stretch over several miles along a single edge. These are the craft that were sighted over Belgium in the wave of sightings taking place there in 1989-1990. It is estimated that over 70 percent of the entire population of Belgium saw these craft firsthand, and as a result, Belgium is the only country that officially recognizes the existence of flying saucers.

Super-sized 'Triangle' ships are seen world wide

Boomerang

These craft are also gigantic. They differ somewhat from the triangle-shaped craft in that one arm of the boomerang ship is longer than the other. These are the sort of craft that have been seen and videotaped by thousands of citizens in Phoenix, Arizona in March and April 1997.

Giant Cylinders

Very large craft, a thousand feet or more in length (picture a 70 story building on its side). These craft are not tapered. Many photographs of these have been taken. In photos they look just like a giant, hovering telephone pole on its side and don't look like a craft at all.

The Roswell Craft

One of the most famous flying saucers of all time, the Roswell craft was not really shaped like a flying saucer. Researcher and forensic artist Bill McDonald has reconstructed the Roswell alien spacecraft from several eyewitness testimonies. Bill received confirmation from contacts he has within the U.S. intelligence community. It was McDonald's re-creation of the craft that the Testor Model Company used for their commercially sold scale model.

McDonald's intelligence agency sources have stated that Jack Northrup and Kelly Johnson, who were the founders of Northrop and Lockheed's "Skunk Works," had direct access to the data and configuration measurements of the Roswell spacecraft.1 It was said that this information was adapted and applied to the development of the X-33 and X-38 aerospace shuttle planes, NASA's space shuttles, the VentureStar, U.S. Stealth aircraft, TR-3 Black Manta.

Other Characteristics of Flying Saucers

There are a few characteristics of flying saucers that are not generally known to the public at large. Although these characteristics are never depicted in the movies, you should know about them.

The Wobble

Flying saucers often wobble when they fly. It is very pronounced at lower speeds, giving the saucer a surreal look. It is often this characteristic which first draws the viewer's attention.

This wobble immediately distinguishes the flight of a flying saucer from that of an airplane. It was the wobble that attracted pilot Kenneth Arnold's attention to the first saucers, which he spotted in 1947.

When a saucer is caught on videotape, people often think the tape is fake because of the wobble. It is reminiscent of a model rocket wobbling on a string like in the old Buck Rogers movies. The wobble is thought to be caused by fluctuations of waves in the electromagnetic fields that the saucers use to overcome gravity. To imagine how it looks, think of a high-speed boat bouncing off the water as it moves forward.

Morphing Disks

Another characteristic of these alien craft is morphing; that is, the shape of the saucer changes right before your eyes. Often a saucer will elongate and become a cigar-shaped craft. This transmutation effect has also been caught on videotape.

Jaime Maussan, a reporter and investigator for a show similar to our 60 Minutes in Mexico, has thousands of videotapes, all from different individuals, showing this morphing capability. Maussan has collected over five thousand videotapes of flying saucers from the citizens of Mexico, including many videos taken of the same craft shot at the same time from many different parts of Mexico City. In Mexico, Jaime Maussan is as well known and as well respected as Dan Rather or Peter Jennings.

Jaime Maussan has videotapes that show over fifty flying saucers at one time. They often hold themselves stationary while forming strange designs, like some kind of array of symbols in the sky. This isn't as dramatic as landing on the White House lawn, but it's pretty close.

In March 1998 Jaime told me, "Nobody in Mexico laughs at UFOs. Nobody. They are frequently around the volcano, which now has the strongest electromagnetic field in the world.  There have been times when all the traffic in Mexico City was stopped, with millions of people standing outside their cars pointing to the skies. Yet, not one American newspaper has ever carried the story."2

Hyperspace Jumps

Videotapes have also captured what have come to be known as "hyperspace jumps." This is when a flying saucer will jump a distance of fifteen to twenty miles in less than one-tenth of a second. Basically the craft is disappearing and reappearing in another location almost instantly. To the viewer, from a distance it looks like a "jump."

Different Names for Flying Saucers

Flying saucers are a world-wide phenomenon. They are called different things in different countries. In Mexico they are known as "flying plates." In China they are known as "flying woks." In many European countries they are known as "flying shields." This term originated in ancient times and continues in use today in Europe. Sizes of the Craft

Just as with the shapes, there is a wide variety of sizes. Most of the flying saucers we see are scout ships and are about thirty feet across. Their size is often deceiving because although there are larger disks, which are also seen, they are sometimes seen at a great distance and they appear smaller than they actually are.

Some Are Huge

As I mentioned earlier, some of these ships appearing in our atmosphere are huge! People regularly report seeing craft several miles across. A woman in Phoenix was driving with her two sons when a boomerang craft flew over them and hovered over the isolated stretch of highway where they were traveling. Out of fear, she accelerated to over eighty-five miles per hour. One of her teenage sons decided to time how long it would take them to get from beneath the craft. He started timing well after they had driven under the craft, and it took them just over two minutes at eighty-five miles an hour to get from under the wingspan of the ship. That makes the wingspan approximately three miles across!

Satellite Photos

Some of these large craft have been caught on film by our orbiting weather satellites. Judging by the grid on the camera lens and knowing the distance of the satellite's orbit, calculations show these craft to be hundreds of miles across! I have included more of these satellite photos in Section: “Watch The Skies.”

Estimating Sizes

I don't know about you, but I have difficulty gauging sizes and distances. For instance, if someone says an object is three hundred feet away, I don't have a clue how far that is. On the state driving test, the words "stay a hundred feet behind the next vehicle" mean nothing to me. But, I do like football, so I can gauge a hundred yards pretty accurately.  I also get a clear picture if someone tells me a building is ten stories tall. For some reason, it's easy for me to relate to.

Now I use the reference of a building to help me understand how big something is. For example, it is often reported that flying saucers are about fifty feet across. Translated, this means it was as long as a four-story building on its side. That's pretty big. Bigger than the words fifty feet seem to indicate to me.

Six hundred Feet Across

We found several military sources who have seen craft six hundred feet across. That's a forty-five story building on its side. That's large!

Folding Space

Just a little teaser to whet your imagination. Aliens beings have the ability to "fold" space. I cover this in more detail later, but here's what this means in relation to space-craft size: Often, the inside of the saucer is much larger than it appears to be from the outside. People who have worked on recovered craft often recall doing a double-take when they first stick their heads inside of a flying saucer. They can't believe it can be that big inside and they pull their head out to look at the outside of the craft. They are in total disbelief. What appears to be a thirty-foot craft on the outside is three times that size on the inside.

Why do people create UFO hoaxes?

I've had contact with quite a few hoaxers of UFO videos over the years. The motives of these individuals have varied considerably. 

   (1) Many created material simply for a laugh. While many within ufology doubt people would put in the effort necessary to, say, create a photoshopped image the amount of effort involved is generally far less than most people seem to think. 
 
   (2) CGI artists showcasing their talents. Many of these artists openly state their creation of the relevant videos (e.g. including the video in a showreel on their website and/or listing the video on their CV). 

   (3) Scientific experimentation : There have been a few interesting hoaxes which (at least according to the hoaxers) were done primarily to test the responses of witnesses and ufologists, i.e. they were conducting an experiment. The best known such experiment is the Cradle Hill hoax (referred to in some of the post above as "the Warminster hoax", which is potentially confusing since there were several alleged hoaxes at the Warminster "hotspot"). That one is discussed in quite a few articles online (particularly on the Magonia website, with D I Simpson writing at least two articles giving the background to the hoax) and in about a dozen books that I've noted. I'm happy to post the full list of references to those discussions, but the longest and most informative ones are by: 
               (a) James Oberg in his book “UFOs and Outer Space Mysteries” (1982) at pages 103-106, 116 (in Chapter 5) of the Donning paperback edition; and 
               (b) Jenny Randles in her book “UFO Study” (1981) at pages 135-138 (in Chapter 11) of the Hale hardback edition. 

   (4) Art : Apart from the obvious example of crop-circle makers, several UFO videos and events have been hoaxed by individuals that considered they were creating works of art. The audience response is part of the art-work. Several crop-circle hoaxers have branched out into this type of UFO "artwork" in the last decade or two. 

   (5) Income from advertising on Youtube videos - Frankly, I don't think this one is as important as some people think (with plain mischief/pranking being far more common...), but at least some characters in the history of ufology seem to be have been prepared to lie in the hope (often disappointed) that it would make them a lot of money. A few Youtube "UFO" video channels seem to be slick ways to maximise views and thus advertising income. But those channels quickly become known within the ufo community as being unreliable so their videos tend to be circulated more by those outside the UFO community (e.g. people on Facebook with a limited involvement in ufology) rather than on UFO discussion forums/groups.

Een magnetometer wordt in eerste instantie gebruikt voor het meten van de componenten van het magnetische aardveld. Het is een zeer gevoelig apparaat dat in een sterk vereenvoudigde vorm ook bruikbaar is voor het detecteren van de aanwezigheid  van een UFO. Het toestel wordt minder gevoelig uitgebouwd en meet alleen de zeer grote waarden van een magnetisch veld op  enkele Km rond de opstellingsplaats. Het signaal veroorzaakt door een UFO geeft aanleiding tot zeer grote afwijkingen bij de registratie en kan perfect benut worden om een alarminstallatie aan te sturen. Uit metingen uitgevoerd zou het gaan over veldsterkten van circa 100 Tesla in de onmiddellijke nabijheid van de UFO.

Die resultaten werden bekomen door constatatie van lichtpolarisatie verschijnselen in de omgeving van de UFO alsook door lijnopsplitsing in het lichtspectrum in de nabijheid ervan. 

Deze spectraal methode werd reeds in een vroeg stadium door de US-luchtmacht gebruikt ter identificatie van het verschijnsel. Een fluxmagnetometer wordt  momenteel ook met succes toegepast door de  onderzoeksploeg van het * Institütfür UFO- Forschung* onder de leding van Gerhard Gröschel in een *UFO Hotspot* omgeving van de kerncentrale van Neckarwestheim.  Een tweede voorbeeld is het gebruik van magnetometers in het onderzoek in Hessdalen (Noorwegen) door de Italiaanse groep onder de leiding van Dr Massimo Teodorani in zijn evaluatie van een typische UFO waarneming in * Physicsfrom UFO Data* .

Als laatste voorbeeld is de waarneming te vermelden door de eigen opstelling in Sint Katelijne Waver door schrijver dezes op 9 October 2008 ,daarna bevestigd door een visuëele waarneming op 1Km afstand van het meetstation tijdens het zelfde tijdsvenster .

De gegevens van deze visuëele waarneming hebben toegelaten een logische verklaring te geven van de gemeten magnetische registratie alsook de nodige gegevens bezorgd om het traject door de UFO gevolgd te controleren.

De hierna beschreven magnetometer werkt perfect en is volledig uitgetest op zijn goede werking. Deze bestaat in grote lijnen uit 3 hoofddelen: de voeding, het zendgedeelte en het ontvangstgedeelte.

Het toestel is volledig opgebouwd met onderdelen volledig verkrijgbaar in de electronica-handel. Alleen de sensor is zelfbouw en bestaat uit een rechthoekige , gesloten stripkern uit mu-metaal (folie van 0,4mm) in 2 lagen uit een legering van nikkel-ijzer-koper en een klein gedeelte Molybdeen  (75/15/5 en rest %)  om de gewenste hysteresis-lus met lage verliezen en lage saturatie-inductie te bekomen. De sensor is van het ringkerntype maar in rechthoekige vorm alleen omdat die gemakkelijker te bewikkelen is.

Een oscillator IC 4047 wekt pulsen op met een *DutyCycle* van 50% met een frequentie van ongeveer 900 Hz gevolgd door een versterker die ervoor zorgt dat de pulsen even groot in amplitude zijn tijdens de positieve en negatieve alternanties. Deze worden vervolgens toegevoerd aan de eindtrap met BC549C/ BC559C transistoren .

De pulsen worden dan aangelegd aan de primaire wikkeling van de sensorkern (over de ganse omtrek gewikkeld) in serie geschakeld met een 6,8 Ohm weerstand voor stroomdetectie. De lage verzadiging waarde van de kern laat toe deze te bekomen met een beperkte stroomuitsturing. De verzadiging speelt een grote rol in het bekomen van een goed bruikbare spanningsvorm uit de secondaire koppelwikkeling over de gehele kern.

            In de schakeling zijn een aantal belangrijke meetpunt opgenomen en te vinden onder de codes DSCO 49..  .

            Onderaan ,links: 

            De voeding uit het net met een dubbele gelijkrichting en stabilisatie van de spanningen voor beide polariteit (+5V/-5V).  Voor beide polariteiten zijn een bruggelijkrichter en een stabilisator (7805) voorzien. Het is essentieel voor de goede werking dat de voeding een zeer goed gestabiliseerde waarde geeft. De uitgang levert immers de spanning voor polarisatie van de integrator in de ontvanger : deze is bepalend voor de stabiliteit van het bekomen resultaat.

            Onderaan, rechts:

            De ontvanger ontvangt de pulsen uit de secondaire van de sensor kern. De daaropvolgende versterker (741) dient om het kleine signaal uit de sensor te versterken tot het nodige niveau om de daaropvolgende integrator (OP07) goed aan te sturen .

De asymmetrie uit het sensor signaal is een maat voor  de geinduceerde flux veroorzaakt door het externe UFO magnetische veld. Dit versterkte verschilsignaal wordt aan de inverterende ingang van de integrator (OP07) aangelegd. De zeer sterk gestabiliseerde polarisatie spanning wordt aan de andere niet-inverterende ingang aangesloten. De uitgangsspanning is een gelijkspanning met een kleine resterende rimpel tengevolge van de schakelwerking op de sensor vanuit het zendgedeelte. Het uitgangssignaal uit de integrator is normaal behoorlijk constant ; alleen tijdens het optreden van een UFO zal die sterk variëren . Het is de bedoeling deze spanning verder te verwerken in een schakeling met 2 comparatoren met boven- en ondergrens instelmogelijkheid als alarmniveau´s .

            De magnetometer, zoals beschreven, is alleen het detectorgedeelte in een uitgebreidere opstelling en wordt normaal gevolgd door een zogenaamde uitwerkingseenheid. Deze bestaat gewoonlijk uit een gedeelte met 2 comparatoren met een onder- en bovengrens vrij instelbaar .Een niet gestoord signaal bevindt zich normaal in het bereik tussen deze grenzen Als nu een groot signaal door  een externe invloed optreedt gaat de meetwaarde buiten de ingestelde zone met een alarmsituatie tot gevolg. Het  circuit bestaat uit zowel een acoustisch als een optisch alsook een aansturing van een schakelaar die de overige registratie toestellen ( eventueel videoapparatuur )in werking gaat stellen.

            De waarden ,veroorzaakt door een UFO verschijnsel , liggen ver boven deze die optreden tijdens een magnetische storm ten gevolge van een zonuitbarsting ( waarden steeds kleiner dan 1 µT).De minimale gevoeligheid van deze magnetometer ligt ver boven de maximale invloed van de zon zodat  deze laatste geen invloed zal hebben.

            De detectieafstand van deze magnetometer lig op ongeveer 8 tot 10Km (Minimum signaal ongeveer 4 µT.

Na herhaaldelijk en minutieus beluisteren van het interview opgenomen van de waarneming in Sint Katelijne Waver ,ben ik tot volgende bevinding gekomen:  Het zou hier dan gaan om *een sigaar/cylindervormige UFO met een zeer sterk begeleiden magnetisch effect veroorzaakt door de voortstuwingswijze van het toestel*

                Ik hoop hiermee het onderzoek hiervan te kunnen afsluiten met een conclusie die gebruik maakt van ALLE terbeschikking staande gegevens

Als conclusie werd destijds in het rapport vermeld*een vliegend object van

onbekende oorsprong een zeer groot magnetisch veld voortbrengende*

Bij een minutieuze analyse van de verklaringen van de waarneming tijdens het

Interview kunnen we de bekomen gegevens thans samengevat worden als volgende :

• het verschijnsel werd initiëel op grote afstand waargenomen als een hevig licht in Zuidelijke richting met daarnaast een opvallende planeet.
• Het heldere licht bleef gedurende een zeer lange tijd ter plaatse hangen terwijl de planeet langzaam opschoof.
• Het bizarre in de volgende faze was dat het licht plots zeer snel ging naderen. Het was juist dit effect dat de waarneemster haar aandacht trok.
• Wanneer het tuig dichterbij kwam verdween dit licht geleidelijk uit het gezichtsveld terwijl de details steeds beter konden waargenomen worden met volgende details:
  • • een donkere massa
    • geen aantoonbare vleugels, geen staartvlak, geen motorgeluiden , geen rood en groen navigatielicht kortom geen karakteristeken van een klassiek passagiersvliegtuig
    • een ovaal/cylindervormig object met aan de zijkant felle rode en gele lichtjes, 7 in totaal
    • bij het overvliegen vertoonde de onderzijde een zeer donker aspect zonder opvallende details
    • het toestel was zeer groot : de lengte werd vergelijkbaar met 2 lengten  passagiersvliegtuig
    • de waarneming werd gedaan buiten op het terras dus niet doorheen een glazen wand of vensterruit
    • de geschatte snelheid van naderen werd als redelijk snel ervaren
    • als bijkomend gegevenvertelde de waarneemster dat ze voordien niet in Ufo´sgeloofde

Haar kennis beperkte zich tot het vernoemen van het zigzaggend gedrag maar dat vond ze niet logisch. De waarneming gaf haar de overtuiging dat ze iets anders had gezien  maar dat het geen klassiek vliegtuig betrof was voor haar een feit (tot 10maal toe herhaald!)

            Uit metingen van de aanvlieghoek en van de schijnbare grootte ter plaatse uitgevoerd  door W.P. van het * Belgische UFO-meldpunt * waar de waarneming gemeld was bleek algauw dat de grootte van het toestel bij de dichtste nadering ongeveer 140m lang moet geweest zijn.

             De overige details opgesomd tijdens het interview gaven een duidelijke verwijzing  naar een bekende UFO vorm uit de literatuur namelijk een *cigar/cylindric UFO*

In eerste instantie werd er gedacht aan een discusvormig toestel gezien onder een bepaalde hoek maar achteraf bleek de beschrijving van een sigaarvormig toestel beter overeen te komen met de gegevens.

Volgende gegevens werden gevonden voor de afmetingen van een klassiek passagierstoestel:

1.             Boeiing 747 : 68,6m  ; voor 2x de lengte wordt dit 137,2m
2.             Airbus A380 : 73,2m  ; voor 2x de lengte : 146,2m
3.             Airbus A330 : 63,7m ; voor 2x de lengte  :127,4m

Het resultaat van deze gegevens ligt zeer dichtbij de geschatte waarde en toont een te meer aan de ze op een betrouwbare wijze heeft weergegeven wat ze gezien heeft.

BESLUIT:        

• De slotconclusie * een sigaar/cylindervormige UFO met een zeer sterke magnetische invloed * is de beste en meest logische uitleg voor hetgeen waargenomen werd.
• Een mogelijkheid bestaat erin dat het een tuig betrof met MHD aandrijving ( zie hiervoor de werken van de Franse onderzoeker en wetenschapper J.P.Petit en van onze eigen Professor A.Meessen)

La reconnaissance officielle des manifestations ovnis et de leurs origines intelligentes extérieures est-elle un évènement inquiétant pour l’humanité ? L’homme possède-t-il la capacité de rencontrer d’autres espèces plus avancées et d’y survivre ?
Ces questions sensibles, ajoutées à celles qui portent sur l’intention des visiteurs surgissent au premier plan dans l’esprit de nos gouvernants lorsqu’ils prennent connaissance de l’envergure du dossier ovni et de ses implications.
Parmi toutes les nations, il en est une particulièrement confrontée aux manifestations ovnis, du moins depuis les explosions d’Hiroshima et de Nagasaki, celle des Etats Unis d’Amérique. Les stratégies des présidents américains, les obstacles qu’ils ont rencontrés et les décisions prises sur le traitement du dossier ovni offrent un éclairage saisissant quant à la politique du secret menée par la nation américaine et son influence sur toute la planète.
Nous n’aborderons pas les éléments antérieurs aux années 40, telle que la rumeur selon laquelle Georges Washington avait rencontré des êtres étranges dans la forêt de Valley Forge(1). Et nous proposons plutôt de citer quelques éléments chronologiques succincts qu’une recherche personnelle permettra d’approfondir.

Franklin D. Roosevelt (1933-1945)

Le 24 février 1942 dans la soirée, presque trois mois après la première attaque de Pearl Harbor par les japonais, les américains qui craignent à présent une attaque sur la côte Ouest voient apparaitre de nombreuses lumières dans le ciel de Los Angeles. Dans la nuit, pendant près d’une heure, la DCA lance plus de 1400 obus sur les objets étrangers, sans qu’aucun d’entre eux ne soit touché (du moins officiellement). D’autre part, 15 avions d’interception décollent sans être capable de s’approcher des appareils étrangers qui évoluent à de multiples altitudes et avec différentes vitesses. A Los Angeles, les dégâts, les blessés et les morts seront tous les conséquences des retombées des obus ainsi que de la peur liée à l’évènement.

Plus récemment, une série de mémos de la Maison Blanche déclassifiés indique que le président Franklin D. Roosevelt connaissait la présence d’extraterrestres et de vaisseaux spatiaux interplanétaires dès 1942. Une organisation spéciale chargée d’étudier leur technologie avait alors été créée. Elle s’appelait l’«Unité des Phénomènes Interplanétaires ».

En 1950, Eleonore Roosevelt, son épouse, déclara elle aussi, son intérêt pour les manifestations ovni et remercia publiquement les témoins. Rappelons qu’au cours de la seconde guerre mondiale, les armées belligérantes sont parfois l’objet de rencontres aériennes spectaculaires. Celles d’objets d’origines inconnues impossible à abattre, à capturer à suivre ou à semer. Les Foo-fighters, nom que leur donne les alliés, créent parfois des turbulences tellement dangereuses pour les bombardiers en opération que ces derniers sont parfois forcés de se séparer discrètement de leurs bombes avant même de survoler leurs objectifs. Ces faits ne seront avoués par les pilotes qu’après la fin de la guerre.

Harry S. Truman (1945-1953)

En juillet 1947, Harry Truman est aux commandes du gouvernement lorsque la base de Roswell, dans le nouveau Mexique, première base de lancement des bombardiers nucléaires, annonce la récupération d’une soucoupe volante. Les militaires ne savent pas encore gérer une information de cette importance et publient une déclaration.

Le gouvernement prend alors la main et décide de clore le sujet en classifiant le dossier et donnant l’ordre de discréditer un des premiers officiers impliqués dans la découverte du crash, le major Jessy Marcel.

Harry truman est historiquement l’un des présidents qui donneront l’ordre d’abattre les ovnis. Les manifestations ovni de 1952 au-dessus du Capitole – La maison Blanche, le forceront cependant à admettre publiquement leur réalité et les recherches en cours: Référence télévisée
Notons au passage que c’est sous son mandat, en septembre 1947 qu’est créée la CIA, laquelle sera naturellement impliquée dans les recherches secrètes et l’application de la politique de black-out sur les ovnis afin de contrôler le sujet et ses conséquences sur la population. Harry Truman est souvent considéré par les chercheurs comme le président ayant autorisé la formation d’un groupe  très secret au dessus de toutes les administrations et dont les objectifs consistent dans le contrôle du dossier ovni au niveau national, a  faciliter les recherches sur les technologies exotiques et à les introduire dans le secteur militaro-industriel. Ce groupe capable de gérer le dossier en toute discrétion, serait chargé de récupérér les débris des engins exotiques sujets à un crash et d’effacer toutes traces pouvant éveiller l’attention des nations étrangères. Ce groupe aux moyens financiers illimités serait constitué de grands patrons de l’industrie de l’armement, de banquiers, de personnels militaire, du renseignement, de l’armement et de scientifiques. Il aurait porté plusieurs noms tels que MJ12, Majestic 12, etc…

Dwight D. Eisenhower (1953-1961)

Bien qu’il déclara en 1954 que les soucoupes volantes existent seulement dans l’imagination de ceux qui les voient, le président Eisenhower fut largement concerné par la gestion du dossier ovni. Il aurait réalisé une observation au début des années 50, alors qu’il se trouvait au large des côtes britanniques. L’objet de couleur bleue serait apparu durant une dizaine de minutes.
Le président Eisenhower est considéré par les chercheurs comme le probable dernier président américain a avoir eu un contrôle total sur le dossier ovni. Le général Robert Broussard Landry est à l’époque, colonel chargé de la liaison entre le Président Eisenhower et la CIA sur le sujet OVNI comme il l’avait fait au temps du Président Truman.

UFOs and the National Security State: Chronology of a Coverup, 1941-1973

Le général Robert Broussard Landry témoigne d’avoir eu pour mission de rédiger auprès du Président Eisenhower, un rapport sur le dossier ovni tous les trois mois. Ce qu’il prétendit avoir fait jusqu’à ce que le Président quitte la Maison Blanche.
Plusieurs témoignages, dont celui de la petite fille du Président Eisenhower, Laura Magdalène, prétendent qu’au moins deux rencontres du Président Eisenhower avec des extra-terrestres ont eu lieu. L’une se déroula en avril 1954 sur la base de Muroc/Edwards et une autre en février 1955 sur la base de Holloman dans le Nouveau Mexique. Les témoignages d’anciens responsables des renseignements ou de la Défense confirment que le Président Eisenhower était très impliqué sur le sujet. Dans un témoignage enregistré, un ancien responsable de la CIA raconte la mission qu’un jour le Président lui confie. Il s’agissait de transmettre un ultimatum aux entreprises privées et au commandement dangereusement dégagé de tout contrôle du gouvernement, quitravaillaient sur les épaves extraterrestres au sein de la zone 51. Ces entreprises avaient cessé d’émettre des rapports, refusaient à présent d’en rédiger et prétendaient que leurs activités relevaient du domaine privé. Le président Eisenhower leur donna une semaine pour venir présenter un rapport à la Maison Blanche. En cas de refus, ils auraient à subir une invasion par la première armée des Etats-Unis, et cela, quelques soient les matériaux classifiés qui y étaient développés.Référence télévisée
Rappelons-nous que dans son dernier discours présidentiel, Eisenhower alerte l’opinion publique sur le risque qui pèse sur la démocratie à cause de l’accroissement de pouvoir et d’influence des milieux militaro-industriel :référence télévisée

John F. Kennedy (1961-1963)

Le Président John F. Kennedy (1961-1963) avait eu l’occasion lors d’un voyage en bateau d’observer un OVNI de couleur argentée ayant une course descendante, mais son entourage témoigne qu’il leur avait demandé de taire l’évènement. Son frère Robert Kennedy était très intéressé par le dossier.
Le 5 novembre 1961, le président Kennedy apprend que l’URSS n’arrive pas à détecter correctement les leurres américains qui ont été envoyés dans l’espace soviétique afin de tester leurs technologies défensives. Le problème de la présence ovni prend alors une importance inattendue car la tension politique entre les deux blocs est à son sommet. Chaque nation a envisagé une confrontation nucléaire et s’interroge sur celui qui attaquera le premier. Les ovnis sont alors perçus comme un risque susceptible de créer une confusion chez les soviétiques et de déclencher par erreur une guerre atomique. Car les soviétiques comme les américains peuvent confondre des ovnis avec des escadrilles ou des missiles nucléaires adverses. John Kennedy tente alors de dialoguer avec ses rivaux afin de comprendre avec eux ces intrusions et d’éviter de déclencher une guerre par accident.
Le 11 novembre 1963, les soviétiques lancent un vaisseau spatial inhabité appelé KOSMOS 21. Demeuré en orbite, sa mission est gardée secrète. Le lendemain, le Président Kennedy transmet une directive présidentielle à la NASA, lui intimant l’ordre de collaborer avec le programme spatial soviétique. Il envoie aussi une note à la CIA pour qu’elle partage elle aussi les informations détenues sur les ovnis.
Voici le célèbre mémo de demande d’accès aux fichiers sur les ovnis que Kennedy a adressé au directeur de la CIA en date du 12 novembre 1963.

Il ne sera jamais obéi car 10 jours plus tard, il est assassiné.
Notons toutefois que plusieurs mois auparavant, Marylin Monroe qui avait été très proche du Président Kennedy mais que ce dernier avait abandonné, semble avoir menacé de tenir une conférence de presse et de révéler des informations confiées par le président Kennedy sur le crash d’un vaisseau extraterrestre et la récupération des corps. Le document ci-dessous a été rédigé par la CIA, 48h avant le décès de Marilyn Monroe.

Lyndon B. Johnson (1963-1969)

Selon Jacques Bergier (qui fut, entre autres, membre de l’OSS et resta toute sa vie « en contact » avec le milieu du renseignement), aussitôt qu’il investit le bureau ovale à la Maison-Blanche, le Président Johnson fut informé de l’existence d’un groupe de pouvoir tellement secret qu’il ne lui en avait rien été dit pendant sa vice-présidence et qu’aucune décision présidentielle ne pouvait être prise sans son aval. Il en fut tellement contrarié, qu’il ne put s’empêcher de l’exprimer, informant à cette occasion certaines personnes qui auraient dû en demeurer dans l’ignorance, et qui sont à l’origine de la fuite.
Le président Johnson s’intéressa de près aux ovnis, contraint par la vague de manifestations qui eut lieu en 1965-66 aux USA et dont la presse relatait des rapports émanant de personnalités telles que le gouverneur de la Floride.
Le 4 juillet 1966 il signa une loi qui entra en application l’année suivante. Fondée sur le principe de la liberté d’information, elle oblige les agences fédérales à transmettre leurs documents, à quiconque en fait la demande, quelle que soit sa nationalité. C’est grâce à cette loi, que les décennies suivantes vont permettre la déclassifications de nombreux documents administratifs (plus de 100 000) liés au domaine des ovnis.

Richard M. Nixon (1969-1974)

L’intervention de Richard M Nixon sur le sujet OVNI est révélée par deux témoins. L’un d’eux est un ancien responsable de la CIA. Monsieur Nixon, vice-président des Etats-Unis durant le mandat d’Eisenhower aurait assisté au compte rendu d’une mission qui consistait à donner un ultimatum aux responsables de la zone 51, détenteurs d’ovni et d’extraterrestres récupérés lors de crashs afin qu’ils se viennent en urgence à la maison blanche pour présenter un rapport de situation.
D’autre part, l’un de ses amis fidèle et célèbre, Jackie Gleason prétend avoir déjà discuté du dossier ovni avec le Président Nixon et qu’un soir, ce dernier serait venu le chercher pour le conduire dans une base militaire de Floride, afin de lui montrer des morceaux d’épaves et les corps d’extraterrestres détenus. Gerald R. Ford (1974-1977)

Lorsqu’il était membre du Congrès, Gerald R. Ford avait fortement bataillé contre ceux qui, depuis les sphères du pouvoir, maintenaientsous scellés le dossier des ovnis. Gerald R. Ford est l’un des deux hommes a avoir annoncé son intérêt pour les manifestations ovni avant son élection à la présidence. Puis, en 1966 une vague de manifestations ovni (des centaines d’observations) fut observée dans le Michigan, son Etat de résidence. Après que l’Air Force, par son conseiller, J. Allen Hynek, se fût ridiculisée en expliquant les observations d’ovnis par des « gaz des marais », une campagne de presse sans précédent eu lieu contre les communiqués perçus comme stupides de la part des militaires.

Gérald Ford déclara alors: « Avec la ferme conviction que le public américain mérite une meilleure explication que celle donnée jusqu’à maintenant par l’Air Force, je recommande vivement l’enquête d’un comité sur le phénomène ovni. Je pense que nous devons au peuple d’établir une crédibilité vis-à-vis des ovnis et de produire le plus d’éclaircissements possible sur ce sujet… » La contradiction entre la position des militaires et celle de Gérard Ford pèsera lourdement et de façon positive sur son élection à la présidence.
Il proposa que le Science of Astronautics Committee, ou bien le Armed Services Committee de la Chambre des Représentants, ouvre des auditions sur « le sujet des ovnis et invite à témoigner des membres de la branche exécutive du Gouvernement, en particulier ceux qui prétendent avoir observé des ovnis ». (Timothy Green Beckley, op. cit.)
Le sous-comité organisa effectivement une audition le 5 avril 1966, mais trois personnes seulement furent invitées à y témoigner, toutes trois liées à l’armée de l’air. Ces derniers déclarèrent au comité qu’ils n’avaient pas de preuve de l’origine extraterrestre des ovnis, ni aucune indication que les ovnis représentent une menace pour la sécurité du pays. C’est au cours de son mandat présidentiel qu’entrera en application la loi F.O.I.A (Freedom Of Information Act sur la déclassification d’archives de l’administration). Après son mandat, il répondra par courrier à un officier des renseignements : « Au cours de ma carrière au congrès en tant que vice-Président et Président J’ai réalisé de multiples demandes d’informations sur les OVNI. Les autorités officielles ont toujours nié en détenir. »

I have to admit that its does look like one ship has turned 45 degrees and waited for the other ship to arrive. The smaller ship is about 20% that of the larger vessel. Very cool observation and catch by Streetcap1 of Youtube.

This is a recent video posted to MUFON site this week. A black UFO is seen moving around the rooftops of the area, but there are also some other mysterious things...another small UFO and a white pyramid shaped cloud. Is it a coincidence? Probably not. UFO with actual pilots often need a wingman, much like the US military demands from fighter pilots. Very cool UFO, but is this new drone technology from Bigelow Aerospace? Hmmmm...

Unedited Witness Statement: i am sending this directly from my iphone, unedited. we just took this video of a ufo. Me and two of my kids(17,20) were leaving chili's parking lot and i begin to joke with them that it was a perfect evening to see an ufo. I believe in ufo but my kids are totally sceptical about it. We jump in the car and I looked up and saw a light. I continue to joke with them and said, "look there, a ufo....hahahaha".... but at the time it was only that, a joke. We continued to watch it as it rapidly start to approach us. then the light started to dim out and we could see a dark form over it. My son then started to literally freak out. That thing came about 300 meters from us and it was a dark squared with rounded corners thing, cruising the sky, no sound whatsoever!!!!!!! The video doesn't reflect even 10% of the clarity of the sighting. unfortunately phone camaras are horrible, specially at dark. But it was so clear to us. it seemed to be the size of a car just crusing there, with almost the same color of the background. My son is still shacking. He never believed in anything paranormal. Since its launch in the 1950s, Area 51 has attracted the great interest of a huge number of people, very keen to find out what lies behind the perimeter of the tightly guarded military airbase.

The top-secret location in Nevada desert has remained off-limits to the public for about sixty years, including a large no-fly zone in airspace nearby.

The lack of basic information has led to weird speculation about its primary purpose. Actually, to most, Area 51 has become a term related to outlandish conspiracy theories about government cover-ups and extraterrestrial life.

Eventually, the wild speculations have diverted public attention away from some of the magnificent developments which have occurred at the base over the many years, things that have remained relatively mysterious among the public.

There is still high confusion among the members of the public concerning the driving forces behind this facility since no photos have been released publicly in the recent years.

Area 51 has been the location of on-going secret programs managed by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) since its establishment. Used mainly to test fresh technologies, some of the most high-level air capabilities of military started their working life at the base.

Work at the location continues to be improved today, with the recent satellite images revealing that new structures are being constructed. Nonetheless, their purpose stays unclear.

Therefore, to attempt and assist you separate reality from myth, here are 15 things about Area 51 you probably don’t know.

1. Foreign Aircraft Were Present At The Base

The US used the Area 51 location to test captured technology acquired from aircrafts of enemy nations.

The earliest foreign plane to land was the Russian-built MiG-21 that had been captured by the Israeli forces in 1966 when one of the members of the Iraqi air force defected.

The primary purpose of the investigations was to reveal weaknesses in design and performance so that United States forces could exploit them during the combat. In 1970, further examinations of Area 51 began – this time on secretly developed Soviet radar systems.

Some speculate this method of examination goes on with the intergalactic spacecraft allegedly being kept somewhere inside the compound.

2. The CIA Only Acknowledged Its Existence In 2013

Until 2013, the CIA declined to acknowledge the presence of Area 51 in the official documents since the United States government deemed the work undertaken at the base to be very sensitive.

This secrecy gave rise to the elusive nature of the base and without doubt fed the thousands of myths surrounding it.

At first, all the secrecy was as a result of the Cold War. Washington became super paranoid about its military programs alleging that it might fall into the hands of the Soviet Union. Fair enough, it would have been pretty shitty if that would occur, so paranoia warranted.

The existence of Area 51 was eventually admitted in a secret report which covered the first 2 decades of operations at Area 51. It was released in 2013 as a result of a freedom of information request by a popular professor at the George Washington University.

Obama also made an impromptu comment regarding the Area 51 in 2013, making him the first president to openly acknowledge its existence.

3. First Drone Test Flight

Even though the use of drones by the United States military is currently widespread in conflicts in different countries, their development started some time ago.

Area 51 was the site of the earliest test flight of the unmanned drone in 1964. The aircraft was known as D21 and was designed for use as the surveillance aircraft.

It had taken quite some time before the drone was launched individually. However, by 1966, the D21 model had flown to the heights of 90,000 feet.

But during its 4th test flight, something went wrong when a particular drone was released from its primary carrier plane and both aircrafts were damaged, killing one crew member. The D21 drone continue to conduct 4 spying missions over China, from 1969-1971.

4. United States Army Accused Of Using Lethal Substances At Area 51

Suggestions have emerged that the military misused secrecy surrounding Area 51, and the confidentiality obligations assigned to those who work there to dump huge quantities of poisonous waste at the site.

The workers who became sick, and the widows of those who lost their lives, brought together evidence of huge drums of deadly waste being dumped in the trenches prior to being set alight.

A court case was arranged but could not proceed because of national security considerations. Claims were also made that due to the remoteness of Area 51, it was used to dispose of the waste gathered from some other military locations.

5. Area 51 Was Accidentally Disclosed

Area 51 is the well-known secret military base of operations in the entire world. However, a 1967 government memo is the single reason we know of its presence at all.

Protocol meant each reference to the Area 51 had to be redacted from each document but, enquiringly, in this memo that was sent by CIA Director Richard Helms and concerned the positioning of surveillance aircraft in the Vietnam, one slipped through.

The mistake did not reach the public, but the big question stands: was this leak actually accidental?

6. U2 Spy Plane Involved in First Area 51 Operation

The site started in 1955 as a top test center for the U-2 spy plane an aircraft established after WWII. It was able to conduct surveillance over the Soviet Union, and even practice flights were performed using the runways constructed onsite.

When it kicked off the operations over the Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, a cover story was made to display it as a weather research plane.

7. Photos Were Once Accidentally Taken off the Base

During the flight on board Skylab in 1974, a certain group of inexperienced astronauts unintentionally took photographs of the Area 51 site.

The incident prompted a national security debate and the likelihood of formally acknowledging the base was regarded. William Colby, retired director of the CIA, was drawn into a huge controversy within the intelligence service that eventually choose not to release the photograph to the public.

Confidential documents since released, show that Area 51 was the only location in the world which CIA had prohibited from being photographed from the space. This offers an indication of how valued the work done there was seen.

8. Area 51 May Have Tested The Helicopters Used In The Bin Laden Raid

The conspiracy to kill Osama Bin Laden in 2011 was conducted by a team of Navy Seals that were flown to his Pakistan site by 2 Blackhawk helicopters.

Nonetheless, when one helicopter crashed during the mission, aviation professionals recognized that this was no normal helicopter.

Some speculate it was the Blackhawk model which had undergone considerable modification; others claim it was a totally new and formerly unknown model, perhaps one which was purpose-built for this mission.

It is believed the testing grounds for this modern chopper would’ve been Area 51. The improved Black Hawk was regarded near invisible to the radar. Judging by the success of the mission, the aircraft was clearly much harder to sense than its predecessors.

9. The Recent Project May Be A Next Generation Spy Plane

Rumors are circulating, after the appearance of recent satellite data displaying Area 51 which a significant new project is under way. A huge, hangar-like building is supposedly being developed at the end of one of the runways.

According to the defense journalist Tyler Rogoway, the United States air force has indirectly admitted that the prototype of a long-range and the unmanned surveillance aircraft exists that’s believed to be a possible candidate for testing.

The hangar developed at Area 51 has been equipped with large doors, nearly 170 feet wide, suggesting that they’ve been precisely designed to deal with a massive object like an aircraft.

10. Entertainment Options at Area 51

If you are planning an enjoyable getaway to Area 51, you may need to pack some books since you are going to be bored.

Insiders have shown that, early on, the only entertainment choices at Area 51 were a small bowling alley and a single cement tennis court. There was no radio, and TV signals only made it through the nearby mountains in the evening.

However, the good news is that Area 51 workers ate very well. The mess hall occasionally served oysters and lobsters, and they enjoyed a weekly steak night.

Let’s not forget that people have camped near the area 51 gate.

11. Aliases of Area 51

During its early construction, Area 51 was given codenames Watertown, Groom Lake, the Edgar Allen Poe-inspired Dreamland and lastly, Paradise Ranch. It is unclear if Michael Jackson had a contributed any of these naming choices.

The primary idea behind “Paradise Ranch” was that it would eventually make the mission appear more desirable to the contracted construction workers.

Arguably, there was not necessary since months of back-breaking labor in the remote Arizonian desert certainly sounds like an idea of a great time.

“Paradise Ranch” is also the name of the campy Korean TV drama. Does it tells the story of the construction of Area 51? It certainly seems like it.

12. Most Ridiculous Conspiracy Theory of Area 51

There are no deficiencies of these to select from, but perhaps the most disgraceful appeared in the 2011 book, on the history of the top-secret base by Annie Jacobsen.

According to her, Area 51 was an active center of a United States cover-up which went into motion after the alleged crashing of the UFO at Roswell, in 1947.

Refuting that it was a UFO, she alleges that the craft was the Soviet mission, piloted by genetically engineered kids to make people in the United States believe that it was the alien craft, to spread fear.

In this imaginary tale, Area 51 was used as a storage location for the Soviet ship and the remains of its crew. As if this wasn’t going far enough, she also claimed that the fugitive Nazi scientist had conducted the genetic engineering of these kids, Josef Mengele, who is ill-famed for his experiments on the concentration camp prisoners during the WWII.

13. Alien Reports

In 1952, a spectacular spike in the UFO sightings had the CIA admitting the remote prospect that interplanetary aircraft were used. The government considered the phenomenon seriously and even investigated every sighting.

90 percent of reported sightings were simply debunked –whatnot and weather balloons – but the other 10 percent were categorized as “incredible reports from credible observers.”

More than half of the UFO reports from the late 1950s through to the Swingin’ 60s were accounted for by the manned reconnaissance flights over the US. Nearly all of these came from Area 51.

Despite the reasonable explanations, several still claim that the alien aircraft are being kept at Area 51 and reverse-engineered to build new weapons and aircraft.

A recent poll confirmed that more than 70 percent of Americans believe UFOs are real. A number that believes in unicorns stays unconfirmed.

14. Hoax Moon Landing Twist

It is no secret entire hoards of people believe America did fake the moon landing in order to win the coveted Space Race. Most of them believe the staged event happened at Area 51 that’s ground zero for each wild conspiracy theory.

What you may not realize is the sliver of evidence corroborates this specific conspiracy. A huge variety of space equipment – including life-support systems and land rovers – were discovered at adjoining nuclear testing grounds of Area 51.

It is possible these were mainly used for test purposes by various astronauts, but it is still very suspicious.

15. Crashed A-12 Spy Plane

The A-12 is a super-sonic spy plane which was built and tested behind the black curtain of Area 51.

It was almost undetectable to the radar and could cross-continental the USA in only 70 minutes, capturing footage at a remarkable altitude of 90,000 ft.

Pushing the aviation limits came with some risks, still, and finally led to a terrible crash outside of Area 51 in 1963. When fragments of the crashed A-12 were revealed in Utah, the CIA chose to release and even publish photos of the plane.

Reportedly, pilot Ken Collins had managed to parachute to the ground where he was shocked to be meet 3 civilians in a pickup, who provided him a ride to the wreckage of his plane.

Instead, Collins asked them to take him in an opposite direction by informing them the plane had a nuclear weapon on board. In fact, this was a pre-arranged cover story in order to keep the craft secret and even proves the lengths officials were ready to go to.

ESO Captures First-Ever Clear Image of An Exoplanet Candidate, And It’s 11 Quadrillion km Away

For the first time ever, ESO astronomers have been able to capture a clear image of a star system 11 quadrillion kilometers away using the combined forces of the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile, the Keck Observatory in Hawaii, and the Calar Alto Observatory in Spain.

CVSO 30C STATUS PENDING

For the first time, astronomers were able to capture a clear image of an exoplanet candidate, orbiting a star known as CVSO 30, which lies around 1,200 light-years away. If validated as an exoplanet, CVSO 30c would prove that CVSO 30 has two planets orbiting it.

European Southern Observatory (ESO) officials say this could be the first star system discovered to have both a close-in exoplanet and another one that is far-out. “If it is confirmed that CVSO 30c orbits CVSO 30, this would be the first star system to host both a close-in exoplanet detected by the transit method and a far-out exoplanet detected by direct imaging,” ESO officials.

In 2012, astronomers found the first exoplanet, CVSO 3b. They have found that this exoplanet is amazingly close to the star, roughly 1.2 million kilometers in distance — just 11 hours away.

On the other hand, the new exoplanet candidate orbiting it, CVSO 30c, is 98,730,000,000,000 kilometres (61,347,977,809,592 miles) away. This distance is 660 times the Earth’s distance from the sun. Given this fact, it means that one orbital period for this planet would take 27,000 years to complete, making astronomers uncertain whether the star is actually part of the star system. More observations would be necessary to confirm (or disprove) this.

“Astronomers are still exploring how such an exotic system came to form in such a short timeframe, as the star is only 2.5 million years old; it is possible that the two planets interacted at some point in the past, scattering off one another and settling in their current extreme orbits,” ESO officials said.

11,000,000,000,000,000-KILOMETER STALKER RANGE

While CVSO 30c’s status remains undecided, what’s really wonderful about the discovery is how impressive it is that we were able to get a clear image of worlds so far away from us — CVSO 30c is 11 quadrillion kilometers (7 quadrillion miles) away from Earth.

In numerical form, T! That’s 15 zeroes!

ESO researchers worked hard building the appropriately named Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile to make this happen. And that’s not even enough. They needed to combine forces with two other observatories: the Keck Observatory in Hawaii and the Calar Alto Observatory in Spain.

And at an 11,000,000,000,000,000-kilometer stalker range, it was definitely worth it.

What Is Artificial Intelligence?

Much of the recent progress in AI research has been courtesy of an approach known as deep learning.

When most people think of artificial intelligence (AI) they think of HAL 9000 from "2001: A Space Odyssey," Data from "Star Trek," or more recently, the android Ava from "Ex Machina." But to a computerscientist that isn't what AI necessarily is, and the question "what is AI?" can be a complicated one. 

One of the standard textbooks in the field, by University of California computer scientists Stuart Russell and Google's director of research, Peter Norvig, puts artificial intelligence in to four broad categories: 

The differences between them can be subtle, notes Ernest Davis, a professor of computer science at New York University. AlphaGo, the computer program that beat a world champion at Go, acts rationally when it plays the game (it plays to win). But it doesn't necessarily think the way a human being does, though it engages in some of the same pattern-recognition tasks. Similarly, a machine that acts like a human doesn't necessarily bear much resemblance to people in the way it processes information.

• machines that act rationally.

Even IBM's Watson, which acted somewhat like a human when playing Jeopardy, wasn't using anything like the rational processes humans use. 

Tough tasks

Davis says he uses another definition, centered on what one wants a computer to do. "There are a number of cognitive tasks that people do easily — often, indeed, with no conscious thought at all — but that are extremely hard to program oncomputers. Archetypal examples are vision and natural language understanding. Artificial intelligence, as I define it, is the study of getting computers to carry out these tasks," he said.  

Computer vision has made a lot of strides in the past decade — cameras can now recognize faces in the frame and tell the user where they are. However, computers are still not that good at actually recognizing faces, and the way they do it is different from the way people do. A Google image search, for instance, just looks for images in which the pattern of pixels matches the reference image. More sophisticated face recognition systems look at the dimensions of the face to match them with images that might not be simple face-on photos. Humans process the information rather differently, and exactly how that process works is still something of an open question for neuroscientists and cognitive scientists. 

Other tasks, though, are proving tougher. For example, Davis and NYU psychology professor Gary Marcus wrote in the Communications of the Association for ComputingMachinery of "common sense" tasks that computers find very difficult. A robot serving drinks, for example, can be programmed to recognize a request for one, and even to manipulate a glass and pour one. But if a fly lands in the glass the computer still has a tough time deciding whether to pour the drink in and serve it (or not).

Common sense

The issue is that much of "common sense" is very hard to model. Computer scientists have taken several approaches to get around that problem. IBM's Watson, for instance, was able to do so well on Jeopardy! because it had a huge database of knowledge to work with and a few rules to string words together to make questions and answers. Watson, though, would have a difficult time with a simple open-ended conversation. 

Beyond tasks, though, is the issue of learning. Machines can learn, said Kathleen McKeown, a professor of computer science at Columbia University. "Machine learning is a kind of AI," she said. 

Some machine learning works in a way similar to the way people do it, she noted. Google Translate, for example, uses a large corpus of text in a given language to translate to another language, a statistical process that doesn't involve looking for the "meaning" of words. Humans, she said, do something similar, in that we learn languages by seeing lots of examples. 

That said, Google Translate doesn't always get it right, precisely because it doesn't seek meaning and can sometimes be fooled by synonyms or differing connotations. 

One area that McKeown said is making rapid strides is summarizing texts; systems to do that are sometimes employed by law firms that have to go through a lot of it. 

McKeown also thinks personal assistants is an area likely to move forward quickly. "I would look at the movie 'Her,'" she said. In that 2013 movie starring Joaquin Phoenix, a man falls in love with an operating system that has consciousness.

"I initially didn't want to go see it, I said that's totally ridiculous," McKeown said. "But I actually enjoyed it. People are building these conversational assistants, and trying to see how far can we get." 

The upshot is AIs that can handle certain tasks well exist, as do AIs that look almost human because they have a large trove of data to work with. Computer scientists have been less successful coming up with an AI that can think the way we expect a human being to, or to act like a human in more than very limited situations. 

"I don't think we're in a state that AI is so good that it will do things we hadn't imagined it was going to do," McKeown said.

Mars Rover Panorama Shows Sweeping 'Marathon Valley' (Photo)

An epic Mars panorama shows the snaking valley that NASA's long-lived Opportunity rover has been exploring for the last year — and will likely soon leave behind.

The newly released photo — a composite of many images Opportunity captured in April and May — depicts Marathon Valley, a feature that cuts across the western rim of the 14-mile-wide (22 kilometers) Endeavour Crater.

Opportunity arrived in the valley in July 2015 to hunt for clay minerals, signs of which had been spotted from above by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. (Clay minerals form via the interaction of liquid water with rock, which makes them of special interest to the Opportunity team; the rover's mission aims to help tease out the history of liquid water on Mars.) While doing this work in Marathon Valley, the rover encountered some curious red crumbly material. Opportunity's handlers used one of the robot's six wheels to scuff the stuff, exposing some fresh samples for study.

The results were intriguing, mission team members said.

"In the scuff, we found one of the highest sulfur contents that's been seen anywhere on Mars," Opportunity principal investigator Steve Squyres, of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, said in a statement.

"There's strong evidence that, among other things, these altered zones have a lot of magnesium sulfate," Squyres added. "We don't think these altered zones are where the clay is, but magnesium sulfate is something you would expect to find precipitating from water. Fractures running through the bedrock, forming conduits through which water could flow and transport soluble materials, could alter the rock and create the pattern of red zones that we see."

Such analyses may be some of the last work Opportunity does in Marathon Valley; it's about time for the rover to move along, Squyres said.

"We are wrapping up our last few activities in Marathon Valley, and before long we'll drive away, exiting along the southern wall of the valley and heading southeast," he said.

Marathon Valley got its name because Opportunity rolled into the region shortly after its odometer ticked past 26.219 miles (42.195 km) — the length of a marathon race.

As of Tuesday (June 14), the rover had covered a total of 26.59 miles (42.79 km) on the Red Planet, NASA officials said. No other vehicle has ever traveled farther on the surface of a world beyond Earth.

The golf-cart-size Opportunity landed on Mars in January 2004, a few weeks after its twin, Spirit. Both robots were tasked with three-month missions, but they kept exploring long after their warranties expired. Spirit was declared dead in March 2011, and Opportunity is still going strong today.

Centuries-Old Shipwreck Recreated with 3D Printing

The seabed holds some fascinating historical secrets, but unlike monuments on land, they’re largely hidden from view. Now, archaeologists in the United Kingdom are using 3D printing to bring two historical shipwrecks to life for history enthusiasts and experts alike.

Using data from photogrammetry (measuring the distance between objects from photographs) and sonar imaging, the researchers have produced scale models of a 17th-century shipwreck near Drumbeg, in Scotland, and the remains of the HMHS Anglia, a steamship that was used as a floating hospital during World War I. The steamship was sunk by a mine off the south coast of England.

"It was a proof of concept for us, trying to establish what could be done using sound and light, but there are so many different applications you could use this for," said maritime archaeologist John McCarthy, a project manager at Wessex Archaeology who carried out dives at the Scottish site and was in charge of producing the 3D models. "People can engage much more easily with a physical object in front of them. You can bring it to schools and conferences, and we are hoping to donate both models to local museums, once we've finished with them," McCarthy told Live Science.

It was not particularly difficult to create 3D-printed representations of the shipwrecks, McCarthy said. The magic, he said, was in creating the virtual models that were fed into the 3D printer.

McCarthy carried out initial experimental surveys of the Drumbeg wreck in 2012 with his colleague Jonathan Benjamin, who is now a lecturer at Flinders University in Australia. McCarthy recently joined him there to begin Ph.D. studies under Benjamin's supervision.

At the Drumbeg wreck site, the pair found three heavily encrusted cannons with evidence of a preserved wooden hull underneath. The ship's identity is still unknown, but one theory holds that it is a Dutch trading vessel called the Crowned Raven, which is known to have been lost in the bay in the late 1600s.

After realizing the techniques they were using could provide enough data for a 3D model, the archaeologists went back to do a more detailed survey in 2014 and used the lessons they had learned from their first attempt.

The archaeologists used a technique called photogrammetry, which involves taking hundreds of overlapping photographs of a site and then feeding them into a computer program that can stitch them together. The application is able to establish the spatial relationships between photos, which allows it to create a so-called 3D point cloud that maps each image in 3D space.

"Once you have a point cloud, you can turn it into a solid surface," McCarthy said. "Then you have a 3D model of the site that's not subjective or an artist's impression, but entirely objective."

The benefits of photogrammetry are that it produces very high-resolution images and it can capture the true color of the site, McCarthy said. The method is easily thwarted, however, by excess marine growth or poor visibility, and it is not well-suited to covering large areas.

Sonar, on the other hand, can see through the murk and can cover much larger areas, McCarthy said. For the 329-foot-long (100 meters) HMHS Anglia, another team from Wessex Archaeology used multibeam sonar — which operates in a similar way to a laser scanner — to do a much larger survey of the shipwreck site.

While multibeam sonar can't match the subcentimeter resolution of photogrammetry, using higher-end equipment and doing many passes can boost accuracy, McCarthy said. The Anglia survey was a particularly high-resolution one, he added, which was part of the reason it was selected for the 3D printing project.

McCarthy pointed out that the Wessex Archaeology team is not the first to create 3D-printed models from underwater imaging data. He said that the field has been booming in recent years, with big advances in both sonar and photographic techniques, and even some novel laser-scanning approaches are beginning to come through.

"All maritime archaeologists are engaging heavily with these techniques now," McCarthy said. "Advances in hardware and software in the last five years has allowed us to do very rapid and cheap surveys, and it has added to the tools we use underwater."

This is an interesting sighting of some glowing lights over the Rosario river in Argentina last week. It looks like we are seeing a UFO hovering over the water, hence the two long lights. However the top light is actually the UFO, the bottom light may be the reflection or the illumination from the doorway below the surface which the UFO probably came from. Hiding a doorway underwater that takes you to an underground base is a smart move.

The lights of the city of Rosario could be seen in the distance, which gave me the certainty that these lights we were seeing were much closer to Victoria. I'd like to clarify a few things. The bridges along the Victoria-Rosario route are not lit, much less in this manner. All along the route there is nothing I know that has such illumination. It was interesting to observe it from hilltop, but what happened later was truly fantastic. The upper part of the illumination vanished as if by magic, and since Checo was returning to Buenos Aires along that route, we agreed that he would make sure to see what it was from both sides. The fact is he saw absolutely nothing, or any area illuminated in such a way. We have no idea what it was, only that it was never in the river, and I'm sure that I'll never see it again. These are the photos. The last photo depicts how it was left after the upper section vanished, and what evidently also vanished when Checo departed. This is a fascinating crop formation. It has a flower or question mark appearance to it. It may have hidden symbols to it, but its hard to make out for sure. Today crop formations are both made by hoaxers and by aliens. Ever since the popularity in the 1990s, people noticed that all the attention was cool, and that they too could make such things. But don't be misled...aliens were the ones who started it all, but humans are making a mockery of it by trying to fool their own species. Crop formations have been recorded going way back in history. 

Farmers have reported finding strange circles in their fields for centuries. The earliest mention of a crop circle dates back to the 1500s. A 17th century English woodcut shows a devilish creature making a crop circle. People who lived in the area called the creature the "mowing devil."

In an 1880 issue of the journal Nature, amateur scientist John Rand Capron reported on a formation near Guildford, Surrey, in the south of England. He described his finding as "a field of standing wheat considerably knocked about, not as an entirety, but in patches forming, as viewed from a distance, circular spots." He went on to say, "... I could not trace locally any circumstances accounting for the peculiar forms of the patches in the field ... They were suggestive to me of some cyclonic wind action..."

Mentions of crop circles were sporadic until the 20th century, when circles began appearing in the 1960s and '70s in England and the United States. But the phenomenon didn't gain attention until 1980, when a farmer in Wiltshire county, England, discovered three circles, about 60 feet (18 meters) across each, in his oat crops. UFO researchers and media descended on the farm, and the world first began to learn about crop circles.

By the 1990s...crop circles had become something of a tourist attraction. In 1990 alone, more than 500 circles emerged in Europe. Within the next few years, there were thousands. Visitors came from around the world to see them. Some farmers even charged admission to their mysterious attractions.

Aliens Sending Out Signals From Ceres

Baffled astronomers made the announcement that deepened the mystery of the bright spots on the dwarf planet Ceres. They recently claimed that the famous spots blinked at intervals of around nine hours.

With the latest discovery, some UFO hunters suggested that it is a definitive evidence of the theory that bright spots on Ceres are artificial beacons transmitting coded signals. The signals would guide ET spaceships coming in to land at a base on the dwarf planet, the largest body being discovered in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

The unexpected fluctuations in the brightness of the mystery spots were observed in the spectrograph of High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS) at ESO’s La Silla Observatory in Chile. The widely known spots, called faculae, can be found in an 80-kilometer crater Occator.

Some UFO enthusiasts speculate that it is a signal. It could be a warning signal, a radar tower, or a greeting signal. It must be there for a purpose, according to UFO researchers. Does humanity need to signal back?

Some members of the UFO community think that alien colonists created the bright spots on the dwarf planet. Others speculate the extraterrestrials are still living on Ceres while some believe aliens may have already abandoned the planet long ago, but the lights are still working.

In December 2015, scientists already suggested that the bright spots could be a form of brine containing magnesium sulfate hexahydrate (MgSO4.6H20). Alien hunters, meanwhile, agree with scientists but insisted that aliens have used these materials to make a beacon.

Scientists have a better explanation for the variations in brightness. They suspect the fluctuations could be due to the activity below the surface that involves churning out plumes of material that reflect light when the planet faces the Sun. The brightness decreases when the plumes evaporate. The process could repeat in the next rotation when the planet faces the Sun again.

However, scientists admit they don’t have enough data and observations to confirm the hypothesis.

These include Bridget Nielsen, 27, from Sedona, Arizona, who is a hybrid mum and medium who charges $65 (£46) for an over the phone session to put parents, who believe they may have conceived hybrid children, in touch with they offspring, according to the community’s website.

Describing sex with a lizard being on a spaceship, she said: “It was great. It was an incredible super primal, super raw, super primal sexual experience.

“There was a really freedom and we were really going for it. It was the best sex I ever had.”

Another young hybrid mum is Aluna Verse, from Los Angeles, California.

Between them Bridget and Aluna claim to have 13 children fathered by aliens.The website, which also charges for other similar sessions and asks for donations, says there are millions of hybrid parents on Earth who have conceived children with aliens either through artificial insemination or full sex, and many remain unaware.The community was founded by Sharon McCormick, aged in her 60s, and former marketing executive Miss Nielsen.

On the website Ms McCormick says: “Since I discovered six and a half years ago that I have many hybrid children, my mission in life has become to help spread the word that they’re real, positive and loving, and to support the parents, siblings and friends of these remarkable kids.

“The concept of hybrid children is so new to so many of us that I believe connecting with each other is of primary importance formoving us all ahead toward the day when we will be vibrationally ready for the children to arrive on Earth.”

Members of the group believe aliens have been harvesting their DNA to create children that combine the best of both human and alien characteristics over a period several years.

Miss Nielson said alien sex was the “best ever” and refuted claims from sceptics of a lack of evidence for the cosmic carnal encounters, saying ETs only take women who, “want to be taken”.She lives with her dad but claims to have four boys and six girls who she has regular contact with.She said: “They are not just taking our children – they are creating a hybrid race to better humanity.”The parents draw their hybrid children who look, as you might expect like a human/reptilian cross breed with big blackeyes.Ms Verse, a computer game designer who claims to have three hybrids, says she was taken on board a spaceship in a “dream state” and she has vivid memories of the sex.She said: “I was in a classroom setting with other humans.

“All of sudden I’m sat next to this green reptilian creature and immediately I’m so sexually turned on looking at this being.

“I was very surprised. We’re making love in this classroom in front of everyone. Everyone turned their attention to us.”It sounds crazy and people have asked if I’m off my meds, but this is really happening.”Philip Mollica, from Clarkston, Michigan, aged in his 50s, claims to have been discovering his hybrid children since 2012.He said: ” I feel a great love for these children, mine and all the others as well. I look forward with great anticipation as this all unfolds.”In an almost cult-like move, the group say they are planning to establish a property where they can live together as a safe place for their children to visit.

Ms Nielson said: “It will be somewhere away from the cities, somewhere where the children can visit, run free and express themselves. People say we are crazy but we are not, this is really happening to us.”

Yes, There Have Been Aliens

LAST month astronomers from the Kepler spacecraft team announced the discovery of 1,284 new planets, all orbiting stars outside our solar system. The total number of such “exoplanets” confirmed via Kepler and other methods now stands at more than 3,000.

This represents a revolution in planetary knowledge. A decade or so ago the discovery of even a single new exoplanet was big news. Not anymore. Improvements in astronomical observation technology have moved us from retail to wholesale planet discovery. We now know, for example, that every star in the sky likely hosts at least one planet.

But planets are only the beginning of the story. What everyone wants to know is whether any of these worlds has aliens living on it. Does our newfound knowledge of planets bring us any closer to answering that question?

A little bit, actually, yes. In a paper published in the May issue of the journal Astrobiology, the astronomer Woodruff Sullivan and I show that while we do not know if any advanced extraterrestrial civilizations currently exist in our galaxy, we now have enough information to conclude that they almost certainly existed at some point in cosmic history.

Among scientists, the probability of the existence of an alien society with which we might make contact is discussed in terms of something called the Drake equation. In 1961, the National Academy of Sciences asked the astronomer Frank Drake to host a scientific meeting on the possibilities of “interstellar communication.” Since the odds of contact with alien life depended on how many advanced extraterrestrial civilizations existed in the galaxy, Drake identified seven factors on which that number would depend, and incorporated them into an equation.

The first factor was the number of stars born each year. The second was the fraction of stars that had planets. After that came the number of planets per star that traveled in orbits in the right locations for life to form (assuming life requires liquid water). The next factor was the fraction of such planets where life actually got started. Then came factors for the fraction of life-bearing planets on which intelligence and advanced civilizations (meaning radio signal-emitting) evolved. The final factor was the average lifetime of a technological civilization.

Drake’s equation was not like Einstein’s E=mc². It was not a statement of a universal law. It was a mechanism for fostering organized discussion, a way of understanding what we needed to know to answer the question about alien civilizations. In 1961, only the first factor — the number of stars born each year — was understood. And that level of ignorance remained until very recently.

That’s why discussions of extraterrestrial civilizations, no matter how learned, have historically boiled down to mere expressions of hope or pessimism. What, for example, is the fraction of planets that form life? Optimists might marshal sophisticated molecular biological models to argue for a large fraction. Pessimists then cite their own scientific data to argue for a fraction closer to 0. But with only one example of a life-bearing planet (ours), it’s hard to know who is right.

Or consider the average lifetime of a civilization. Humans have been using radio technology for only about 100 years. How much longer will our civilization last? A thousand more years? A hundred thousand more? Ten million more? If the average lifetime for a civilization is short, the galaxy is likely to be unpopulated most of the time. Once again, however, with only one example to draw from, it’s back to a battle between pessimists and optimists.

But our new planetary knowledge has removed some of the uncertainty from this debate. Three of the seven terms in Drake’s equation are now known. We know the number of stars born each year. We know that the percentage of stars hosting planets is about 100. And we also know that about 20 to 25 percent of those planets are in the right place for life to form. This puts us in a position, for the first time, to say something definitive about extraterrestrial civilizations — if we ask the right question.

In our recent paper, Professor Sullivan and I did this by shifting the focus of Drake’s equation. Instead of asking how many civilizations currently exist, we asked what the probability is that ours is the only technological civilization that has ever appeared. By asking this question, we could bypass the factor about the average lifetime of a civilization. This left us with only three unknown factors, which we combined into one “biotechnical” probability: the likelihood of the creation of life, intelligent life and technological capacity.

You might assume this probability is low, and thus the chances remain small that another technological civilization arose. But what our calculation revealed is that even if this probability is assumed to be extremely low, the odds that we are not the first technological civilization are actually high. Specifically, unless the probability for evolving a civilization on a habitable-zone planet is less than one in 10 billion trillion, then we are not the first.

To give some context for that figure: In previous discussions of the Drake equation, a probability for civilizations to form of one in 10 billion per planet was considered highly pessimistic. According to our finding, even if you grant that level of pessimism, a trillion civilizations still would have appeared over the course of cosmic history.

In other words, given what we now know about the number and orbital positions of the galaxy’s planets, the degree of pessimism required to doubt the existence, at some point in time, of an advanced extraterrestrial civilization borders on the irrational.

In science an important step forward can be finding a question that can be answered with the data at hand. Our paper did just this. As for the big question — whether any other civilizations currently exist — we may have to wait a long while for relevant data. But we should not underestimate how far we have come in a short time.

Scientists discover ‘Unnatural’ mysterious element in formation of solar system

Researchers have just confirmed the presence of an ‘unnatural’ mysterious element during the formation of our solar system. It is one of the heaviest known elements and does not occur naturally. Interestingly, on our planet curium can only exist when created in laboratories or as a byproduct of nuclear explosions.

Curium was named after Marie Curie and Peter Curie whose work lay the foundations of the theory of radioactivity.Researchers identified Curium present in a meteorite nicknamed ‘Curious Marie’ by researchers offers new insight into how stars form. The presence of Curium suggests that nearly all ‘heavy radioactive isotopes’ could have formed at the same time.

The research was published in the Journal Science Advances.

According to scientists from the University of Chicago, a rare element known as ‘curium’ which was found in a meteorite during the formation of our solar system, around 4.6billion years ago. Researchers believe that the element does not occur naturally on earth and it was first produced and identified in 1944 by a group of scientists at Berkley, California.

The lead author of the study, François Tissot said that „Curium is an elusive element“.

“It is one of the heaviest-known elements, yet it does not occur naturally because all of its isotopes are radioactive and decay rapidly on a geological time scale.“

Researchers can use it in order to determine an accurate reading on when our planet was created. According to co-author Nicolas Dauphas:  “The possible presence of curium in the early solar system has long been exciting to cosmochemists because they can often use radioactive elements as chronometers to date the relative ages of meteorites and planets.”

Researchers speculate that the enigmatic element could have come into existence as a result of star formations, or massive star explosions that happened before the solar system was born.

Professor Dauphas continued:  “This is particularly important because it indicates that as successive generations of stars die and eject the elements they produced into the galaxy, the heaviest elements are produced together while previous work had suggested that this was not the case.”

According to a report from the University of Chicago, „models predict that curium, if present, was in low abundance in the early solar system. Therefore, the excess U-235 produced by the decay of Cm-247 cannot be seen in minerals or inclusions that contain large or even average amounts of natural uranium. One of the challenges was thus to find a mineral or inclusion likely to have incorporated a lot of curium but containing little uranium.“

INDIA will be the first country to explain to the world about ALIENS CONTACTS?

New Delhi is in the middle of a big secret internal debate. On one side the largest democracy of the world is eager to explain to its citizens and to the world about the ongoing contacts with the UFOs and extraterrestrials. On the other hand there are invisible untold international protocols that prohibit doing anything that may cause worldwide fear and panic.

It is well accepted between the UFO and extra-terrestrial experts that all the five nuclear powers are in contact with the beings from other stars for quite some time. Recently India has seen enormous news on UFO contacts and secret UFO bases in Himalayas near the Chinese bases. In Ladak, for example the locals clearly point out the everyday phenomenon of large triangular spacecrafts coming out below the ground and Indian security forces protecting them.

Military officials and politicians have confessed the fact that India has been contacted. India has been told the rules of the Universe.

The current debate is on whether to keep it secret like other countries are doing or in tradition of a total transparent society come out and tell the truth. India is so open and democratic; it is very difficult to keep a secret for long. The biggest concern of the Government today is that unlike in other countries, it will be very difficult to keep it secret for long. If the information comes out through unofficial channels first and then the authorities are pressed against the wall to confess, two bad things can happen. First, it can really cause a panic in the country as well as the world. Second, the way the Indian politics is run, the ruling party will be thrown out of power in no time i it is ever found that the Government withheld such information from the public.

The recent rush of world leaders to India is remarkable. Starting from Russian President Putin to major Senators from America have visited or are planning to visit India. European Union is in deep discussion with India on cooperation. All sanctions against India’s nuclear programs and Indian Space Research Organization are in the process of being lifted. India is cooperating with Europeans and the Americans in space explorations and technology research program. India is also part of World Trade Organization. India is receiving major outsourcing contracts in IT and call-center service work from America and Europe. India’s Forex reserve is at a level never imagined before because of international direct investments from Western nations, Japan, Korea and others. Interestingly, China the arc rival of India changed its posture in the last few years to make India’s friendship and trade a priority. India is slowly getting to the point when it is accepted as a permanent member of the Security Council. All the five Security Council members China, America, Russia, France and UK support India’s inclusion.

When all these factors are added together and analyzed, it seems like India is being told by the world to abide by the hidden protocols and in exchange be recognized as a major emerging superpower.

The debate the country is facing internally is whether to abide by the laws of the world and the Universe to be recognized as a superpower or be truthful to its citizens and the world.

According to sources close to the Government, the UFO contacts is known by quite a few politicians in the opposition and of course by those who are in power.

The military has legitimate concern of not letting the secrets out either.

Recently, India’s foreign affairs minister Mr. Natwar Singh came out and said that for India it was not necessary to become a nuclear power. He is a strong supporter of Mrs. Indira Gandhi, India’s former Prime Minister who initiated the nuclear program in the mid sixties. India first exploded a nuclear device in Pokhran in early seventies. The whole country including people from his own party questioned Mr. Singh for such an irresponsible statement. But on analyzing his statements, it is evident, that based on what he knows now, being a nuclear power really does not matter much because the technologies controlled by the extra-terrestrials are so advanced that all our technologies mean really nothing. But importantly he may be irritated with this controversial ongoing secret debate and what he really meant was that if India was not a nuclear power, the debate on UFO and extra-terrestrials will never be there in India.

I love this video. It has a mixture of 32 different UFOs found on Google Earth over the years. Understand that there were hundreds more, but Google deleted those older ones. 

 

Long ago, about 8 years ago, there were dozens of giant metal silver orbs over different countries around the world. Each one was reported (before I had this site so its not posted) and each one was deleted within weeks. 

This is a great video put together by Argentine Marcelo Irazusta, and I really hope he gives us an update to the coordinates to this green UFO above.

Guys, this UFO is just beautiful. When I added light to the photo, it really made the colors stand out. The green and the pink boarder are really memorizing. Christchurch is famous for its UFO sightings, and this is the best, most clearest that they have ever presented to us. This could be a UFO with an occupant, or it may be a remote drone, that allows the alien light years away to experience most senses through it...sight, sound, smell...maybe not feeling objects, but drones like that must come closer to gather such info.

A brightly coloured sphere filmed in the night sky near Christchurch this week joins a tradition, of mysterious objects seen in Kiwi skies, stretching back at least a century. Oisin Lavelle reported seeing and filming one sphere on Monday night and seeing three on Tuesday night. He watched the Monday night sphere for two hours before it sped away amid bursts of bright orange light.

NASA says its an object that was sitting in the ring and then was dislodged, I agee with that. It looks like a UFO was laying dormant in the ring and was suddenly turned on and shot out to do its job. This UFO was probably a drone, since the UFO may have been hiding there for an infinite amount of years. 

 

Of course there are some dormant ships that have a living human-like pilot...for instance the Apollo 20 mission ship in Deporte crater on Earths moon. The pilot (a woman) had a third eye on her forehead and was attached to the pilot controls with an umbilical cord-like tubes. This woman was recovered by the astronauts, taken back to earth...all the time she was said to be in a stasis, not alive...not dead. I askedWilliam Rutledge on Youtube  (RetiredAFB) for more info (he was an astronaut on the mission), but his account was hacked, videos mostly deleted, and at about 80 years old, decided to give up trying to teach the world about what he saw. He did leave a message I read saying "congratulations to the ones hacking my account, you have great hacking skills." or something like that. That was the last we ever heard of William 8 years ago.

A bright disruption in Saturn's narrow F ring suggests it may have been disturbed recently. This feature was mostly likely not caused by Pandora (50 miles or 81 kilometers across) which lurks nearby, at lower right. More likely, it was created by the interaction of a small object embedded in the ring itself and material in the core of the ring. Scientists sometimes refer to these features as "jets." Because these bodies are small and embedded in the F ring itself, they are difficult to spot at the resolution available to NASA's Cassini spacecraft. Instead, their handiwork reveals their presence, and scientists use the Cassini spacecraft to study these stealthy sculptors of the F ring. This view looks toward the sunlit side of the rings from about 15 above the ring plane. The image was taken in visible light with the Cassini spacecraft narrow-angle camera on April 8, 2016. The view was acquired at a distance of approximately 1.4 million miles (2.2 million kilometers) from Saturn and at a Sun-Saturn-spacecraft, or phase, angle of 105 degrees. Image scale is 8 miles (13 kilometers) per pixel. The Cassini mission is a cooperative project of NASA, ESA (the European Space Agency) and the Italian Space Agency. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. The Cassini orbiter and its two onboard cameras were designed, developed and assembled at JPL. The imaging operations center is based at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colorado.

Paradigm Research Group Wants A Different Form Of Disclosure

It has been reported many times that Hillary Clinton will dig deeper into the UFO issues once she becomes the next U.S. president. UFOlogists and conspiracy theorists have been claiming that several governments have evidence of extraterrestrial visitations, but keeping it secret to the public because of fear of potential impacts on the rule of law and religion. Bill and Hillary have long intrigued the disclosure movement after making moves in the 1990s related to the disclosure.

Things got more interested when Mrs Clinton promised to look into the alleged alien technology that has been hidden at Area 51 in Nevada. She said: “I’m going to get to the bottom of it.” Temperatures raised another level earlier in March when Hillary’s most trusted advisor John Podesta reaffirmed commitment to declassify top-secret UFO files.

However, Paradigm Research Group would rather want a different form of disclosure from Hillary’s camp. The group is not only interested in alien visitation, but also on claims about aliens secretly engage with world leaders. The research organization wants to lift the truth embargo, which it says has been in force since the 1940s. The controversy stems from Clintons’ dealings with friend Laurence Rockefeller, the late billionaire philanthropist.

Rockefeller made a fortune through oil and banking and was part of the family considered as one of the most influential in U.S. history. In 1993, the business person started an approach to the disclosure, including CIA classified files, in what became the Rockefeller initiative. Rockefeller advocated a review of the legendary Roswell case with the help of then director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and advisor to the president, late Dr John “Jack” Gibbons.

However, the Roswell review initiated by Rockefeller concluded there was no alien involvement and the event mainly involved a balloon, but not a weather balloon, as first reported, but a top-secret nuclear-detection balloon being tested at the time. The US Air Force said that the weather balloon explanation was provided at the time for national security reasons. The UFO community labeled the report a whitewash for not explaining any of the testimony from the witnesses.

Aside from Roswell, Rockefeller had planned to write a direct open letter to then President Bill Clinton along with a threat of taking out adverts in the press. Rockefeller wanted a full disclosure and an amnesty for all witnesses to come forward and avoid prosecution. Dr Gibbons reportedly prevented Rockefeller from doing it. However, the threat somehow carries some weight as Rockefeller secured the ears of Mr and Mrs Clinton at his ranch.

During the seven-day vacation of the Clinton family in August 1995 at the Rockefeller Teton Ranch, the 85-year-old billionaire privately talked the First Lady and the President of UFOs and his hopes. No one knows what was said exactly, but Mr Clinton was carrying a review of how the government handled confidential material at that time. Later that day, Mrs Clinton was photographed walking through the ranch in conversation with Rockefeller, carrying a copy of a Paul Davies book “Are We Alone: Philosophical Implications of the Discovery of Extra-terrestrial Life.” (Amazon link) However, until today, no member of the Clinton team ever say a word about it publicly.

Sedona — My life partner and I set out tonight to consciously look for UFOs and to stargaze as we often do. Sedona is the Extra-Terrestrial (e.t.) capitol of the world, so we often engage in long, late night drives like we did on June 9, 2016. We drove on 89A near the Chapel of the Holy Cross and saw several small UFOs, which may have been shooting stars or aircraft. We were the only ones on 89A for several miles. My partner spotted a very bright light off in the distance and seemed to be hovering over the cliff walls to the right of Bell Rock. It was brighter than Sirius and Venus combined together and it just sat there motionless. It was too low for an ordinary plane. My partner stopped the car in the middle of 89A trying to discern whether it was a man-made craft or not. It was silent. I consider extraterrestrials to be my “star family.” The instant I said that, the white light became SO bright that I had to look away for a moment because it hurt my eyes. The white light appeared to be emanating from a dome shaped structure on the top of the craft. Then the craft was rapidly descending and heading straight for our car at astonishing speed. It reached us in seconds. The craft sped SO quickly to us that it was almost scary. It was completely silent and flew at a very low altitude. It was pretty large and definitely not a drone. It was shaped almost like an upside down “Y” and had a definite triangular presence to it and we saw blinking lights in the corners of the “wings” as it literally came to a point right above our car. The craft slowed down above our car.

It didn’t stop but it came at us with the seeming intention of letting us know that its passengers saw us. It started to curve over us a little bit almost like it was going to head towards Airport Mesa behind us. I turned to my partner to see their face (full of pure awe) and when I turned around to see where the craft went, it was completely gone. My partner stated that if we had hit a baseball hard enough, we probably could have hit it. If it had flown towards Cathedral Rock it would have crashed into it because of how low it was. The fact that it shined its light as brightly as it could the minute I addressed it and the fact that it literally zoomed to our car like a little white fireball was extremely intriguing. My partner remembers a blue light, white light, and green light. I saw the massive white light and the green light, but instead of blue I saw a couple of red lights blinking. Sitting there and when I looked at the car clock it said 11:11 p.m. Thanks to MUFON CMS

California Lights

Joshua Tree  — On June 4, 2016 by Kristie Cowan’s at Contact in the Desert UFO Conference:  Around 10:00 in the evening. There was a small airport south of us and a Marine Base northeast of us- but all the activity came from the west going due east. At Orion Lookout we set up for our CE-5 protocols. One of us was filming, and I was spotting with Celestron stargazing binoculars and a green laser. As we began I was able to spot many stars, planets, planes and satellites. There was a parade of 7 orbs/UFOs flying faster than satellites and as high as planes from west over the mountains and disappearing to the east. The orbs were a defused soft green, soft red and soft lilac blue. They gave us quite a show! We pointed our laser pointers and flashed them three times and they flashed us back! The 2nd, 3ed, & 4th ones formed a triangle configuration as they passed us! The crowd of around 100 people went wild with cheers, clapping, and jumping up and down. At this time I did feel a “heart” connection, thanking them and sending love to them. Sadly, my friend that was recording came up with just audio, however a documentary over on Melinda Leslies side got footage of all the activity. Not only are they here, it appears they are friendly! The orbs/UFOs were large enough to be seen with the unaided eye, quite large actually and looked like an orb of soft diffused light. The orbs/UFOs glowed with one single light (unlike recreational and military drones that glow with 2 or more). The type of glow was unlike anything I have ever seen in my research on military drones. Colorado Triangle

Loveland — I was out filming in my yard with an old camera on June 12, 2016. I was watching a bunny then I started to look around in the sky (1st look) and saw nothing. I resumed looking around my yard then I looked at the mountains, and then scrolled towards 2 cottonwood trees. In the center, I glanced around. It was until I reviewed the tape that I saw it: Hovering near a cloud, it was a near-transparent pyramid with only the outline visible. In less than a second, it quickly went up and ‘cloaked’ itself. I was pretty spooked… and I showed it to my parents and they said it could be reflection or a cloaked ship. Thanks to MUFON

Harrington — I was going for my morning walk on Wednesday June 2, 2016. I walked into town, and was planning to buy some water and head home. I looked up high and it was the colors that made me notice it.  And then it was tumbling and flying upward in a cartwheel-like manner.
It first looked black but then I saw colors. It would flash bright blue, yellow, and red. It started off below the clouds, but as it tumbled, it was rising so that it was very high, above the clouds. I saw it tumbling. On my video, it appeared at the top to jump suddenly from one place to the other. When I finally stopped filming, it was because the drone had reversed its course.  Florida Cylinder

Ormond Beach – I observed something very strange on evening of June 10, 2016 at 9:10 pm. I was outside looking west when I observed what appeared to be a fireball t traveling north. It was three times brighter than Jupiter and very bright white yellow orange and had a slight tail pointing south. I instantly thought fireball, but the object was slowing down, so I thought this object was space junk. This object was “dropping” what appeared to be hot material that was same color as the object. The object continued to slow down and dripped the strange material two times before the object slowed to a complete stop.  As the object remained stationary it dripped the bright material momentarily. It took ten seconds to stop- which is far too long of a time for any fireball or space junk. I observed this object stationary for two minutes and shot one still photo with my iPhone.  I’ve been a dedicated amateur astronomer for over 40 years and I know the sky well. This was neither a fireball or space junk, ISS, satellites or planets. Thanks to MUFON CMS

Boca Raton — My girlfriend and I Observed a cigar-disc type object hovering low (400-500 feet up) on June 12, 2016. It was silent and had very bright colors rotating around it. It would tilt. And I ran through golf course to get a better video angle on my phone. It started moving south, and then hooked around an apartment building. I saw it come from behind building in distance; and change into an orange energy ball before I lost sight of it at 9:17 pm.

An hour later I observed a black triangle with three flashing bright lights (1 red, 2 white although one of the white lights appeared green at some points). It flew from the southwest approx. 800-1000 feet up, and circled over my head. My iPhone camera got static twice, after circling twice it took off fast to the north. Thanks to MUFON CMS

Rochester – I was taking pictures on June 11, 2016, of sunset when checking pictures to send to local meteorologist I noticed something with four lights in picture.   Thanks to MUFON CMS

 Massachusetts Object

Vineyard Haven — Doing yard work when I noticed the first object passing over at 3:15 PM, on June 14, 2016. I was in the shadow of my roof line and thought that is a strange shiny object. It passed at a good clip in a NW to SE direction. One minute after another traveled the identical route. Then others passed over pretty evenly spaced by about 1-2 minutes between. As the sixth one passed over my son drove up the driveway and I insisted he watch. He saw one pass over and dismissed it as a Mylar balloon. They didn’t look like balloons to me and I felt they were small craft of some kind. I ran into the house and grabbed my Cannon power shot camera and shot two short clips of video.  Took four pictures and the battery died. I got my binoculars and made notes. The sun was reflecting off of them brightly to begin with and they appeared to have a small dome on top and  a faint red orange ring at the base of the dome. The shape overall was a fat disc or squashed basketball with the dome on top. The final one I saw was at 4:03 PM and it passed over a small single engine plane. I have to guess that the plane was about 600 to 800 feet and the object was 200 feet higher. The final orb traveled N to S then took a slight hook to the E. This was so fascinating and I saw 25orbs total. Thanks to MUFON CMS

Jersey City — My mother and special needs sister went up to a family member’s barn to see the horses on June 4, 2016, to take pictures of my sister and animals. My mother later that day came home and sent me pictures of my sister and the horse.

The first and second picture with the object in upper left hand corner peeked my interest.  My family truly believes that there is so much more then we even know or can explain. Thanks to MUFON CMS

Mantua — Triangular UFO hovered over route 45 in NJ and turned on its side over the road and then flew sideways towards Philadelphia at approximately 10 mph. I have never encountered any aircraft like this in my life. It made no noise and it seemed to have multicolored lights rotating inside one light. If anyone else witness this at 9:40 pm on June 10th 2016.  Thanks to MUFON CMS

 South Carolina Triangle

Indian Land — A large, black triangle UFO was spotted on May 26, 2016, by a witness that moved away so quickly, it made the witness upset. He was lying in bed when he noticed a light out a bedroom window on May 26, 2016.  The witness saw a white light along with red and blue lights blinking on the UFO. It was moving too fast to be a plane, so he got up and ran to the window. Its light so big and considering the distance. The witness just saw the blue and red strobes on the wings. The witness observed the triangle as it moved behind trees, still traveling at very fast speed. He noticed a smaller white light following the first object. Just before the witness lost sight of it, he realized that the two lights were connected and that he was actually looking at a huge, black triangle craft with lights at the points. Pennsylvania Orb

Belle Vernon — Out with my Mom on June12, 2016 she had to go to a few stores that evening; I stopped to get a couple of pictures randomly.

When looking them over later, I found some with an “object” that I hadn’t noticed when taking them originally. I was facing west into the sunset, so these could be artifacts or reflections, but the object shows the same pixilation as the rest of the sky, etc.

Killeen — As I was walking out of IHOP with my boyfriend on June 12, 2016, we noticed there was lightening in the sky. We also noticed there were Amber colored lights just falling out the sky at a distance.

We were thinking it was maybe transformers but then I started doing my research and I noticed it could have been a UFO. Yes, my heart dropped. I watch too many movies so of course I was paranoid. I am submitting this so there can be further investigation.

Washington Object

Tacoma – I’m a public school teacher and former lawyer, On June 12, 2016, my birthday, I was at my aunt’s house near the Narrows Bridge and saw what I thought was a helicopter. I watched it through the window for a few minutes, but as it neared I went outside. It had blinking lights that repeated its pattern, much like a plane, but I saw no wings. Once outside, I heard no sound. Once it neared overhead I took this 30 seconds of video. I then went out in the backyard to continue watching it. I showed my uncle and cousin. Neither knew what it was. By the time we got binoculars it was so far in the distance I could no longer spot it. We just saw it within the past 20 minutes.

P.s. After re-examining the footage, it appears the spherical object was rotating on its axis. The light source at its base appears to show this. The object was traveling with the wind (5 MPH from the NNE), too.

Note: The object is not a balloon or helicopter. As stated by witness it has no wings. It is also not a drone. Perhaps it is a real UFO. Thanks to William Puckett, Director Website

Arab Emirates

Dubai — I was in Bin Ladin Signal near the police station around 3 am in Sarah. I didn’t have the remaining balance to pay my taxi so my house is not far from where I stopped. I saw a light moving very fast. From a different direction came three lights forming a triangle. Ten minutes later the craft changed direction and flew different ways. I tried to record but my mobile battery is not charged to record video so I took some pictures with my phone. I can see some high way light and I was scared to even go home alone. When I got home I charge my mobile and zoom the picture in and I can understand the shape., I got home and I feel confused, this is the second time I saw UFO at my company where I live. I asked my boss to get CCTV camera but they did not. Thanks to MUFON CMS

 Argentina Disk

 El Cholar – The witness said he found an object on Google Earth in Argentina that he wanted me to take a look at, because it had a disk shape.
When I checked out the coordinates he gave me, I found that the UFO was visible four times. The first three times it’s seen far away, but still a disk shape. The fourth and final time its extremely close and tilted again.
Its also tilted, which is what Bob Lazar (Area S4 scientist) says that disks need to do to move from place to place. It also has an antenna sticking out of it. Purpose may be for magnetic energy waves it harnesses to hover.
This is a very old and secluded farms area from the 1800s. This is the perfect location for UFOs to do research on humans or other creatures and not be noticed.

I stopped and filmed a white object flying at high speed moving right to left. It made no noise.

Germany Triangle

Kühren –I was at my friend’s birthday party in a little village that hasn’t many street lights it was already very dark on November 1, 2014. We went outside and played hide and seek. Two friends were hiding in a very dark place and saw three big lights in a triangle shape with a little red light in the middle. It was moving very fast and the lights were steady and not flashing like airplane lights. It made no sounds although it was very big and near to me. It was flying in a straight line and disappeared behind some houses after a couple seconds.

There wasn’t an airport anywhere nearby so why should a plane this size fly so close to the ground and make no sounds. When I saw the object I felt really weird and couldn’t really talk. After it was gone I asked my two friends if they’ve seen it too, they had but they thought it was just an airplane. I am still really confused what this was. Thanks to MUFON CMS

Cospicua — At 9:42 PM, while observing night sky on my roof I saw a very bright silvery shining object round disc-shaped heading east. Its size was as much as five times the size and brightness of Jupiter as visible from Earth. It was at 70 degrees elevation in the Ursa Major constellation and disappeared at once as it reached an elevation of 40 degrees. Edinburg — We were in a park when we observed the object in the sky on June 5, 2016. It was not like and airplane or something similar. We thought that maybe would be a satellite but we were very suspicious about the object.

It looked very distant and reflective, not very easy to see. We had the feeling that was something weird and tried to take some pictures with a camera (60mm lens).

For our surprise, the camera was able to catch it (We had to use the trees as a reference to take the picture and also to be able to find the little dot later). Thanks to MUFON CMS

7 Theories on the Origin of Life

Life on Earth began more than 3 billion years ago, evolving from the most basic of microbes into a dazzling array of complexity over time. But how did the first organisms on the only known home to life in the universe develop from the primordial soup?

One theory involved a "shocking" start. Another idea is utterly chilling. And one theory is out of this world!

7. Electric Spark

Lighring may have provided the spark needed for life to begin.

Electric sparks can generate amino acids and sugars from an atmosphere loaded with water, methane, ammonia and hydrogen, as was shown in thefamous Miller-Urey experiment reported in 1953, suggesting that lightning might have helped create the key building blocks of life on Earth in its early days. Over millions of years, larger and more complex molecules could form. Although research since then has revealed the early atmosphere of Earth was actually hydrogen-poor, scientists have suggested that volcanic clouds in the early atmosphere might have held methane, ammonia and hydrogen and been filled with lightning as well.

6. Community Clay

The first molecules of life might have met on clay, according to an idea elaborated by organic chemist Alexander Graham Cairns-Smith at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. These surfaces might not only have concentrated these organic compounds together, but also helped organize them into patterns much like our genes do now.

The main role of DNA is to store information on how other molecules should be arranged. Genetic sequences in DNA are essentially instructions on how amino acids should be arranged in proteins. Cairns-Smith suggests that mineral crystals in clay could have arranged organic molecules into organized patterns. After a while, organic molecules took over this job and organized themselves.

5. Deep-Sea Vents

The deep-sea vent theory suggests that life may have begun at submarine hydrothermal vents spewing key hydrogen-rich molecules. Their rocky nooks could then have concentrated these molecules together and provided mineral catalysts for critical reactions. Even now, these vents, rich in chemical and thermal energy, sustain vibrant ecosystems.

4. Chilly Start

Ice might have covered the oceans 3 billion years ago, as the sun was about a third less luminous than it is now, scientists say. This layer of ice, possibly hundreds of feet thick, might have protected fragile organic compounds in the water below from ultraviolet light and destruction from cosmic impacts. The cold might have also helped these molecules to survive longer, allowing key reactions to happen. [Related: The Ingredients of Life]

3. RNA World

Nowadays DNA needs proteins in order to form, and proteins require DNA to form, so how could these have formed without each other? The answer may beRNA, which can store information like DNA, serve as an enzyme like proteins, and help create both DNA and proteins. Later DNA and proteins succeeded this "RNA world," because they are more efficient.

RNA still exists and performs several functions in organisms, including acting as an on-off switch for some genes. The question still remains how RNA got here in the first place. And while some scientists think the molecule could have spontaneously arisen on Earth, others say that was very unlikely to have happened. Other nucleic acids other than RNA have been suggested as well, such as the more esoteric PNA or TNA.

A study in 2015 suggests the missing link in this RNA puzzle may have been found.

We have two last ideas to throw at you . . .

2. Simple Beginnings

Instead of developing from complex molecules such as RNA, life might have begun with smaller molecules interacting with each other in cycles of reactions. These might have been contained in simple capsules akin to cell membranes, and over time more complex molecules that performed these reactions better than the smaller ones could have evolved, scenarios dubbed "metabolism-first" models, as opposed to the "gene-first" model of the "RNA world" hypothesis.

1. Panspermia

Perhaps life did not begin on Earth at all, but was brought here from elsewhere in space, a notion known as panspermia. For instance, rocks regularly get blasted off Mars by cosmic impacts, and a number of Martian meteorites have been found on Earth that some researchers have controversially suggested brought microbes over here, potentially making us all Martians originally. Other scientists have even suggested that life might have hitchhiked on comets from other star systems. However, even if this concept were true, the question of how life began on Earth would then only change to how life began elsewhere in space.

Oh, and if you thought all that was mysterious, consider this: Scientists admit they don't even have a good definition of life!

Near-Perfect Free Fall in Space Sets Stage for Gravitational Wave Hunt

A European space mission has achieved the closest thing to a true free fall ever observed for a human-created object, demonstrating the technologyneeded to build a future observatory that will hunt for gravitational waves far from Earth, scientists said.

The two gold-platinum cubes inside the European Space Agency's (ESA)LISA Pathfinder spacecraft are virtually motionless with respect to each other, with a relative acceleration equivalent to the weight of a virus here on Earth, mission team members announced today (June 7).

"With LISA Pathfinder, we have created the quietest place known to humankind. Its performance is spectacular and exceeds all our expectations by far," Karsten Danzmann, director at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics and director of the Institute for Gravitational Physics at Leibniz University Hannover, both in Germany, said in a statement. "Only by reducing and eliminating all other sources of disturbance could we observe the most perfect free fall ever created," added Danzmann, the co-principal investigator of the LISA Technology Package. "And this has shown us that we can build LISA, a space-based gravitational-wave observatory."

Gravitational waves: The hunt is on

Gravitational waves are ripples in space-time that were first predicted by Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity a century ago.

According to Einstein's equations, the acceleration of massive objects generates gravitational waves, which then propagate through the universe at the speed of light. Dramatic events such as black-hole mergers andsupernova explosions produce the strongest gravitational waves.

These ripples cause tiny distortions of space-time that should be identifiable, given a precise enough instrument. And in February, the first such direct detection was announced, by scientists with the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) consortium, which operates huge detectors in Louisiana and Washington state. 

The announcement made a big splash among scientists and laypeople alike, because gravitational waves offer a new way to study the universe. The waves don't interact with matter, so the information they carry across billions of light-years is "pure," free of distortion or alteration, researchers have said. But ground-based instruments such as the LIGO detectors can spot only a subset of gravitational waves, because of interference from seismic activity and other factors here on Earth, ESA officials have said. Space-based observatories will therefore be needed to hunt for lower-frequency waves, such as those generated by mergers between the supermassive black holes that lurk at the hearts of galaxies, the officials added.

ESA aims to launch such an observatory, provisionally known as LISA, in 2034. The mission will likely consist of three spacecraft arrayed in a triangle, with each leg about 620,000 miles (1 million kilometers) long. Inside each craft will be a "free-falling test mass"; lasers will measure the distance between these masses, spotting the minuscule anomalies caused by passing gravitational waves, researchers have said.

Such work will require incredible precision, which means that the test masses will have to be in near-perfect free fall, unperturbed by sunlight pressure and other forces. And that's where LISA Pathfinder comes in.

Paving the way

LISA (short for Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) Pathfinder — whose total cost to ESA is $490 million (430 million euros) — launched on Dec. 3, on a mission to demonstrate the technology required for the future observatory.

At the heart of LISA Pathfinder are the two identical gold-platinum cubes, each of which weighs 4.3 lbs. (1.96 kilograms) and measures 1.8 inches (4.6 centimeters) on a side. The cubes are separated by 1.5 inches (3.8 cm), and they hang inside the spacecraft, which surrounds but does not touch them.

A laser precisely measures the cubes' positions, orientations and distance from each other.

"We can determine the distance of the two free-falling test masses to less than the diameter of a single atom," Gerhard Heinzel, leader of the Interferometry in Space research group at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics and Leibniz University in Hannover, said in the same statement.

On Jan. 22, LISA Pathfinder reached its destination in space, a gravitationally stable spot known as Lagrange Point 1, which lies about 930,000 miles (1.5 million km) from Earth, in the sunward direction.

Then, on March 1, the probe began its six-month science mission, performing a variety of experiments, including a crucial one that attempted to place the test masses in a virtually perfect free fall. LISA Pathfinder used its thrusters to maneuver precisely, shielding the masses from external forces — and did so incredibly effectively.

The relative acceleration between the two test masses was lower than 1 part in 10 millionths of a billionth of Earth’s gravitational acceleration, mission team members said. This result — which is based on the first two months of datacollection, and was published today in the journal Physical Review Letters — proves out the key technologies required to detect and study gravitational waves in space, Danzmann said.

"At the precision reached by LISA Pathfinder, a full-scale gravitational-wave observatory in space like LISA would be able to detect fluctuations caused by the mergers of supermassive black holes in galaxies anywhere in the universe," he said.

"The results reported by the LPF team are, quite simply, a tour de force in precision measurement," LIGO executive director David Reitze, who's based at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, wrote in an accompanying "Viewpoints" piece that Physical Review Letters also published today.

"These results bode extremely well for the future LISA mission," added Reitze, who was not involved in the LISA Pathfinder (LPF) study. "The LPF experiments firmly establish that the precision needed by LISA for measuring test-mass displacements are well in hand, setting the stage for the next era in gravitational-wave detectors."

Methanol, a Building Block of Life, Found Around Newborn Star for 1st Time

Some of the building blocks of life are likely present on many planets from day one, a new study suggests.

Astronomers using the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array(ALMA) in Chile spotted methanol in the dusty disk around a newborn star, marking the first time this carbon-containing organic molecule has been spotted in a planet-forming environment.

"Methanol in gaseous form in the disk is an unambiguous indicator of rich organic chemical processes at an early stage of star and planet formation," study co-author Ryan Loomis, of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts, said in a statement. "This result has an impact on our understanding of how organic matter accumulates in very young planetary systems."

ALMA — a collection of radio telescopes high in the Andes Mountains of northern Chile — looked at the sun-like star TW Hydrae, which lies about 170 light-years from Earth.

Astronomers think TW Hydrae is about 80 percent the mass of the sun, and much younger — barely 10 million years old. (The sun formed about 4.6 billion years ago.) TW Hydrae is surrounded by a disk of dust and gas that could one day form a planetary system.

ALMA mapped the chemical composition of the disk and found methanol, also known as methyl alcohol (CH3OH). Methanol is a relatively simple organic molecule, but it's one of the largest molecules ever found in a protoplanetary disk, researchers said.

Methanol forms as a solid (an ice) on the surface of grains in frigid dustclouds. That means the dust grains are releasing it into space, study team members said.

The methanol was found in a region where comets may be forming, some 30 to 100 astronomical units (AU) out from TW Hydrae. (One AU is the distance from Earth to the sun — about 93 million miles, or 150 million kilometers.)

Comets might be one source of the organic molecules that formed the basis of the first self-replicating molecules on our own planet, so the new results could have bearing on the origins of life on Earth, study team members said.

The study was published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters on May 13.
