The Sun’s Mysterious Tilt Gets A Surprising Explanation

Astronomers point to Planet Nine.

For more than a century and a half, astronomers have known that the sun is tilted. 

That is, the sun rotates on an axis that isn’t quite perpendicular to the orbits of Earth and the other major planets ― all of which lie in the same plane because all formed out of a disk-shaped cloud of gas and dust that was spinning around the sun early in the solar system’s 4.6-billion-year history. 

But no one has ever come up with a convincing explanation for this peculiar tilt ― until now.

In a new study slated for publication in The Astrophysical Journal, three planetary scientists at Caltech in Pasadena, California, contend that the tilt was caused by Planet Nine. That’s the massive and as-yet-unseen planet whose existence at the outer edges of the solar system was predicted in research published earlier this year.

Planet Nine is thought to be about 10 times bigger than Earth and about 500 times farther from the sun, according to Space.com. Its orbit is believed to be inclined at an angle of about 30 degrees from the other planets’ orbital plane.

This cockeyed orbit means that Planet Nine’s gravitational forces have been tugging on the other planets in a way that has gradually caused their orbital plane to shift.

“Because Planet Nine is so massive and has an orbit tilted compared to the other planets, the solar system has no choice but to slowly twist out of alignment,” Elizabeth Bailey, a graduate student at Caltech and the study’s lead author, said in a press statement.

The sun’s spin axis has a tilt of about 6 degrees off the orbital plane of the major planets. And when the scientists calculated how much of a tilt Planet Nine would have caused, they came up with the same number. Mystery solved!

Of course, technically speaking, the sun only appears tilted from our perspective.

“What’s actually going on is that the sun is staying put in its fixed reference frame and it’s the planetary orbits that are being tilted by Planet Nine,” study co-author Konstantin Batygin, an assistant professor of planetary science at Caltech, told Astronomy magazine. “So Planet Nine has tilted the entire disk of the solar system by 6 degrees and because we live on that disk...to us it looks like the sun is tilted, but it’s actually the other way around.”

But if that’s the explanation for the sun’s apparent tilt, what explains Planet Nine’s bizarre orbit?

There are several possible explanations, Batygin told The Huffington Post. The likeliest, he said, is that early in the solar system’s history, gravitational forces from a star not far from the sun pulled Planet Nine from the orbital plane that until then it had shared with the other planets.

Of course, that’s not proven. Nor has it been proven that Planet Nine actually exists.

“It’s not firmly established that Planet Nine is there, because we’ve never seen it,” Batygin said. “Am I certain that it’s there? Absolutely.”

And proof could be on the way. Batygin said several groups of astronomers are searching for Planet Nine using some of the world’s biggest telescopes.

Australia's 5 best UFO sightings, as recommended by an alien expert

Area 51, the Bermuda Triangle, Roswell. Why are the most famous UFO mysteries so United States-centric? Movies probably have a lot to do with it.

In fact, it was the Independence Day Resurgence home release last week that got us thinking — what about Australia?

Our overseas mates might be surprised to learn that Australia can really hold its own when it comes to spooky UFO reports and abduction testimonies. With mass sightings, "alien hot spots” and even a mysterious oceanic triangle of its own; Down Under has its fair share of alien stories to tell around the camp fire. 

Want to hear some? It's almost Halloween, after all. Granted, it's not a holiday directly associated with aliens but you get it. *insert spooky synth sounds*

Mary Rodwell is the founder and principal of the Australian Close Encounter Resource Network, and she's the person you call when you spot a potential UFO, FYI. Especially since the Royal Australian Airforce (RAAF) officially stopped looking into reported sightings in the '90s. She says that it's due to Australia's large size and small population that you don't hear about UFO sightings more.  

She told Mashable: "A lot of the time so we don't get it [UFO sightings] recorded or people don't want to talk about it, particularly in more isolated places where farmers see stuff, as they do, and have that experience.

"I have people contacting me every week ... So this isn't just dear old America here, this is everywhere," she said. 

While it may be happening everywhere and on the regular, there are some definite Aussie stand outs when it comes to UFO tales. And thanks to Rodwell, we have some leads on the best ones. You're welcome! 

1. Mass sighting at Westall High School 

The Westall incident is often referred to on the dark corners of the web (where Angel Fire websites dwell), as Australia's most significant mass UFO sightings. It occurred in 1966 at Westall High School in Melbourne. Over 100 students, teachers and members of the public claimed to have seen three metallic objects in the sky, hovering closely. 

Afterwards, witnessed claimed they were paid a visit by "men in black" and teachers said they were told to dismiss the incident by police and military authorities. A case of mass hysteria, or something more? *X Files theme tune plays softly in the background* 

2. Frederick Valentich, the pilot that vanished 

Okay, this is a doozy. in 1978, a 20-year-old pilot and UFO enthusiast named Frederich Valentich was flying over the Bass Strait (separating Tasmania and mainland Australia) when he radioed air traffic control in Melbourne. 

In the transmission, the young man describes an object hovering 300 metres (1,000 feet) above him and said it was "not an aircraft." He made statements like "it has a green light and a sort of metallic light on the outside," and "It’s coming for me right now," before his signal was lost. His plane disappeared without a trace. *mystery intensifies*

3. Kelly Cahill, X Files inspiration 

Australian woman with the pseudonym "Kelly Cahill" was referenced in the first rebooted episode of the X Files, because that's how cool her case is. In 1993, she and her husband were driving though the Dandenong Ranges when they saw a big ol' "blimp" thing and went to get a closer look. 

Next minute, Cahill wakes up in her own car feeling oddly relaxed. The couple returned home only to realise they'd lost an hour and creepily, that Cahill had a painful triangular mark near her bellybutton. Over the next few weeks, she experienced flashbacks, eventually appearing on TV programme Today Tonight (of course) to tell the story of her abduction.  

4. The case of the Knowles family 

Believers like Mary Rodwell say the 1988 experience of Faye Knowles and her three sons (and their two dogs) is one of the most significant "close encounter" testimonies ever. 

Also reportedly involving several witnesses, the story goes involves the family witnessing an egg-like, bright structure. They then went on a high-speed car chase against the object, climaxing with the family's car being lifted from the road as weird black dust, high-pitched sound and a horrible smell overwhelmed the car. "I felt like my brain was being sucked out," said eldest son Patrick at the time. *dun dun DUN* 

5. Wycliffe Well, self-described UFO capital  

UFO hobbyists rejoice! Australia's got its own tiny town chock full of cute alien signposts. It's a great place for a road-side Instagram. Wycliffe Well is found in the Northern Territory and it calls itself the UFO capital of Australia. 

While the idea that it actually experiences "nightly UFO sightings" is up for debate, there's no doubt that it's got the quirkiest caravan park for miles around. 

While it's cool to think about road tripping to Australia's UFO hotspots, according to Rodwell, if extra terrestrial beings want to contact you, they'll damn well find a way. 

"There does seem to be certain places where craft are seen that little bit more often," she says, "but to be quite honest with you if you're someone they're interested in they can pick you up ... It can be a huge craft above Sydney that you would never see but it would be there if it needs to be…"  

Better keep those eyes peeled, earthlings. The truth is out (back) there.

Mysterious 'Dark Energy' May Not Exist, Study Claims

The universe may not be expanding at an accelerating rate after all, meaning that mysterious "dark energy" might not actually exist, according to a new study.

This is quite the claim. In 2011, three cosmologists from two research teams won the Nobel Prize in physics for independently showing that distant Type Ia supernovas, which are a kind of exploding star, are moving away from Earth faster than nearby ones are.

These surprising results, which were published in the late 1990s, strongly suggested that some strange force must be spreading space-time apart. If no such force exists, the reasoning goes, then the expansion of the universe that began with the Big Bang 13.8 billion years ago should not be accelerating. Instead, it should be decreasing, slowed by the collective gravitational pull of all the galaxies, black holes and other matter in the cosmos. [Dark Energy: The Mystery Explained (Infographic)]

This hypothetical dispersive force came to be known as dark energy, because astronomers didn't really know what it was (and still don't, as a matter of fact).

But the new study, which was published online Friday (Oct. 21) in the journal Scientific Reports, questions this Nobel Prize-winning conclusion. Lead author J.T. Nielsen, of the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, and his colleagues analyzed 740 Type Ia supernovas using a different theoretical framework than the one that the two research teams employed in the 1990s. (The previous work also looked at just 70 or so Type Ia supernovas, Nielsen's team pointed out.)

The new analysis found just "marginal evidence" for the concept of dark energy and accelerating expansion.

"The evidence for accelerated expansion is, at most, what physicists call '3 sigma.' This is far short of the 5-sigma standard required to claim a discovery of fundamental significance," co-author Subir Sarkar, of Oxford University in England, said in a statement.

"So it is quite possible that we are being misled, and that the apparent manifestation of dark energy is a consequence of analyzing the data in an oversimplified theoretical model — one that was in fact constructed in the 1930s, long before there was any real data," Sarkar added.

Sarkar acknowledged that "a lot of work will be necessary to convince the physics community" that this latter possibility could actually reflect reality. This appraisal seems to be accurate; there has indeed been pushback from other astronomers.

One skeptic is Paul Sutter, an astrophysicist at The Ohio State University (and a contributor to Space.com's "Expert Voices" section). For starters, Sutter thinks that Nielsen et al. shouldn't be so dismissive of the statistical link that they found.

"I don't know, 3 sigma is pretty great to me," he told Space.com. "Their paper very clearly points to a universe with dark energy."

While Sutter agreed with Sarkar that a 3-sigma detection is not entirely convincing by itself, he stressed that the motion of Type Ia supernovas is far from the only evidence supporting the existence of dark energy. Sutter cited, among other things, oscillations in the cosmic microwave background (the ancient light left over from the Big Bang); observations of large-scale structure in the universe; and "baryon acoustic oscillations," which are odd fluctuations in the density of matter.

"If we had a universe with no dark energy, those features would have disappeared long ago," Sutter said. "We have scads of evidence — multiple and independent probes — that all point to a universe with dark energy. And the authors [of the new study] try to just kind of hand wave this stuff away."

Sutter said that the new paper should help scientists better understand how to use supernova data to get a better handle on dark energy. But he thinks the authors made an unwarranted leap in suggesting that, as Sarkar put it, "a key pillar of the standard cosmological model is rather shaky."

"If you took out the strong claims that the authors are trying to make, it's an interesting nuts-and-bolts methodology paper," Sutter said. "But it doesn't really even begin to rock the foundations of modern cosmology."

Surprise! Cold Gas 'Halos' Found Around Brightest Objects in Universe

Gas halos around distant galaxies are colder and more common than previously believed, a new study suggests. The finding could force astronomers to rethink some of their theories about galaxy formation.

Researchers examined 19 quasars, or galaxies with very active supermassive black holes at their centers, using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile. You can see a video of the quasar halos here. Quasar black holes eat huge amounts of nearby material, such as gas and stars, very quickly, causing the galaxy centers to blast out large amounts of radiation. This makes quasars the most luminous objects in the universe.

Previous studies had found that about 10 percent of all quasars have halos, which are made of gas from the intergalactic medium and extend up to 300,000 light-years from the quasars' cores. So the astronomers were surprised to find halos around all 19 of their study objects. [Distant Quasar Lights Up Galactic Halo (Video)]

"It is still too early to say if this is due to our new observational technique or if there is something peculiar about the quasars in our sample," study lead author Elena Borisova, an astrophysics professor at ETH Zurich in Switzerland, said in a statement, referring to the group's use of a relatively new instrument on the VLT called MUSE (Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer).

"So there is still a lot to learn; we are just at the beginning of a new era of discoveries," Borisova added.

The survey held another surprise as well: The newly studied halos have temperatures of around 18,000 degrees Fahrenheit (10,000 degrees Celsius).

"This revelation is in strong disagreement with currently accepted models of the structure and formation of galaxies, which suggest that gas in such close proximity to galaxies should have temperatures upwards of a million degrees [Celsius; 1.8 million degrees F]," European Southern Observatory representatives said in the same statement.

A paper based on the research will appear in the Astrophysical Journal.

Residents did not think it was a meteor because it didn’t look like it. They said that it was a blue, green shooting out green flashes. A 40-year-old witness, who introduced himself as Khalid, stated that they were baffled as no one has ever seen anything like it.

Before going south toward the Yemeni desert, the UFO changed course multiple times. A rebel shot the UFO using a low altitude surface to air missile system with a passive infrared homing guidance and high explosive warhead. In contrast to the general idea of UFOs, which typically so advanced that any sophisticated weapons on Earth would find a hard time to take them down, this particular UFO was taken down with just a single shot.

The location of the crash site was immediately determined. A Saudi helicopter revealed an aerial photograph along with the story and embedded location. The location is a dessert located about 220 miles north and slightly east of Al Mukalla. However, it is not determined on what happen to the alien in the photo.

No report about the incident in the west, but it was witnessed as far as Kuwait. Residents in the region where the object was reportedly heading claimed they heard an explosion and felt a tremor as if something had crashed.

The Saudi government has allegedly sealed the area, which borders Yemen, but has not released information regarding the alleged crash site. Houthi rebels have been in rebellion against the Yemen government that started in 2015. Rebel sources claimed one of their men fired at the UFO using a shoulder type 9K-32 Strelka and brought down the unknown aerial thing.

The Odd History of DARPA's Cyborg Insect Sentinels

The next time you see a moth, dragonfly, or other winged insect, go in for a closer look. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has been developing insect cyborgs for the past seven-plus decades, and a recent Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request from San Jose State University Lecturer Dr. Susan Maret’s blog “secrecy {fragments}” shows just how sophisticated these futuristic, dystopian bug drones have become.

Over a year after Maret’s FOIA request, DARPA sent back 88 pages, most of which were Powerpoint slides. Since the 1940s, DARPA’s toiled to develop Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) and Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS). It didn’t take long for engineers to realize that the key to effective MAVs was right in front of their eyes: Nature’s own insects — and, in some cases, winged mammals — were ideal case studies to be mimicked and, in some designs, enslaved. These engineers, along with DARPA’s numerous contractors and subsidized academic institutions, began developing HI-MEMS — Hybrid Insect Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems.

Yikes.

In the paper’s conclusion, the authors write: “We also showed down-and up-stroke actuation of each wing separately, through which we were able to affect the flight direction of Manduca sexta. This work paves the way for future engineering approaches to utilize the bioelectronic interfaces, especially for realizing insect cyborgs.” In the acknowledgements, the researchers thank DARPA’s HI-MEMS program for single-handedly footing the bill.

Eight years have passed since these researchers’ insect cyborgs first took flight. It could well be that these cyborg bugs already fly among us, or patrol far-off battlefields. Or maybe they remain an unfulfilled prophecy. Regardless, like the cicadas, they’re bound to rise soon enough.

MUFON International tracking multiple triangle UFO reports

Four triangle UFO cases were reported to the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) international desk in recent months from Switzerland, New Zealand, Canada and Iran.

A Switzerland witness at Neuchatel recalled an incident from March 2011 when he and his wife were sitting in the living room of their apartment at Rue de la Cote.

“My wife sat under a side window of the room from where you can see the Rue Auguste Bachelin,” the witness stated.“It was already dark outside and there were nearly no cars in that road anymore. There is anyway not much traffic in that road. It was very silent outside and inside we had no light switched on as we were watching TV. It is impossible that this is any reflection from the inside. Then I turned around to talk to my wife and I saw a huge triangle with three lights under each corner.”

The witness described the object.

“It was approximately 15-20 meters wide and maybe 1.5 meters high. The edges were rounded and there were no windows or anything to see. Maybe there was something on the top, but that was not visible from that angle. The object was flying/hovering maybe 10 meters or lower from west to east, following the street.”

The witness was able to watch the object for between 10 and 20 seconds.

“The speed was very low, but I cannot tell how fast it was. It seemed to me like it was searching something like a police helicopter, but it was sure no helicopter. I am a FPV drone pilot myself and I know how a helicopter flies and that it has to make a lot of sound when flying so low. Surface was black matte without any symbols or markings as far as I have seen it.”

The witness submitted one illustration with the report.

“The next week I have searched in Google for a triangle UFO and it looks nearly exactly like the one described in the ‘Belgium UFO Wave’ from 1989 but without the red light in the middle. My wife asked me what was wrong, but before I could answer the object was gone. She was making jokes of me so I didn’t talk to anybody about that until now. But I am nearly sure that someone else must have seen it. Please let me know if there are other reports so I know I am not crazy.”

MUFON International CAG team member Wolfgang Stelzig closed this case as an Unknown.

A New Zealand witness at Christchurch recalled a UFO event from 1990 when a V-shaped UFO about 120 feet long moved overhead on November 12.

“I could see the struts quite clearly,” the witness stated.“It was the shape of electrical pylons on its side. As it passed over there was no noise. I could see part of blue light /disc upfront and two light blue lights at the rear.”

The witness explained his position.

“We lived on Cashmere Hills quite high up. After viewing this object for about 20 minutes, I asked my wife to get the video camera. I filmed it for 10 minutes. It somehow turned into a circular light jumping all over the place.”

The object the moved toward the witness.

“When the craft passed over, it was a huge triangle shape with light blue discs on the rear and front. There was no noise.”

The witness stated that he was later visited by “three men in suits” and questioned about the events.No images or videos were included with the MUFON report.

New Zealand MUFON National Director and STAR Team Member Roger Stankovic is investigating.

A Canadian witness at Estevan reported being overcome with fear after watching two, triangle-shaped UFOs move to the ground level at 8:15 p.m. on August 20, 2016. The witness was at his kitchen table when the lights on the objects caught his eye.

“They formed a triangle,” the witness stated.“There was a bright, orange-red light at the corner of each of them forming a triangle. These triangles that were formed were big. The size, location, and what had appeared they were doing scared me. They were floating, came down to the ground and appeared to be doing something. They were there for some time.”

The witness watched for about 20 minutes.

“I stopped watching them and closed the curtains. I felt that if I continued to watch them, that they would sense my presence there, even perhaps pick up on what I was thinking. At first I thought that a couple of semi-trucks took a wrong turn and had to turn around on our property. As I kept watching I soon realized I was wrong. I was stricken with fear and panic as I had watched what they were doing. I tried to calm myself. I was so worried that they would sense my presence being so close.”

“I was awake studying for my post PhD exam,” the witness stated.“I did what I used to do every night. I went out in front of the house and stood right beside the dry river that is just in front of the house. That is when it happened. I saw a red light in distance. It came closer and closer. OMG, I still get goosebumps when I think about it. I couldn’t move at all. I mean I was just like a statue staring at that thing. I am usually very brave compared to my friends and family, but that was the most frightening event of my life.”

The witness said the object was emitting light.

“It then started scattering a red light over the area. I mean everywhere was red. After a minute, it came up and just disappeared in a second. I mean, the way it disappeared was even scary, like blinking. I have never said this to anyone because I think it will probably sound crazy. I didn’t know what to do, who to tell. I just found this site and reported what happened. I also never went back to that spot for smoking. Anyway, just writing about it here made me feel better already. Thank you.”

MUFON International is investigating.

This could be more evidence to the hollow moon theory. So many UFOs have been seen around the moon, yet we don't see a lot of structures on the surface, so there must be a large cavity within. 

Hollow Moon Theory: The moon's mean density is 3.34 gm/cm3 (3.34 times an equal volume of water) whereas the Earth's is 5.5. What does this mean?

In 1962, NASA scientist Dr. Gordon MacDonald stated,
"If the astronomical data are reduced, it is found that the data require that the interior of the moon is more like a hollow than a homogeneous sphere."
Nobel chemist Dr. Harold Urey suggested the moon's reduced density is because of large areas inside the moon where is "simply a cavity."

MIT's Dr. Sean C. Solomon wrote,
"the Lunar Orbiter experiments vastly improved our knowledge of the moon's gravitational field... indicating the frightening possibility that the moon might be hollow."
In Carl Sagan's treatise, Intelligent Life in the Universe, the famous astronomer stated, "A natural satellite cannot be a hollow object."

The objects were not visible to the naked eye, and I fixed the camera on a tripod not to move the camera. only the next day I went to see the pictures on the computer, when I found strange white spots around and near the moon. When a Coca Cola Truck tipped over and spilt out its empty boxes on the side of the road, a UFO appeared. Another truck and two other cars were also traveling with them. Its uncertain why the lead truck turned off the road and flipped on its side, but the driver may have been distracted by the UFO, but afraid to say it. The UFO apparently stuck around and got caught in the photos of the accident. Aliens are curious creatures just like us. Thanks to Christian Mace for this news update.

Monclova, Mexico. Like an amazing coincidence of science fiction film were, employees of a company Monclova inadvertently caught one unidentified flying object (UFO) while attending a report on the stretch of Highway 53 leads to Backbone, Nuevo Leon. 

The incident took place last Friday, around 5:00 pm, when several co-workers were in an incident in this place; however, it was not until after retiring from the site realized that not knowing was part of an unusual event, as in the graphs they took to verify the accident appears a series of objects flying over a truck load of soft drinks, very similar what people describe as UFOs. 

"We never noticed anything until the night someone saw the photos and impressed told us to tell us what had happened," said one of the people who were present at that time, who preferred to omit his generals. 

He added that to verify the accuracy of the content in the photographs had captured, he decided to corroborate with the rest of his 12 companions images each I caught is from different angles, but to the surprise of everyone in each picture there appeared a UFO. 

He also said that in trying to recall when they were at the scene, recalled a strange incident since arriving at the site became a "zone of silence" because the car stereo stopped functioning for no reason. 

"Another strange fact is that we wanted to turn on the music, but it never worked, then, when we got to our homes the radio began to work, something had happened, but we did not realize until now that we saw the pictures." 

The photos where the alien craft appear were presented yesterday in drafting Monclova Zócalo and although people who were part decided to remain anonymous considered they were going to share it with the media.

Europese Marslander crashte door communicatiefout in de software -  HLN.be

De landing van de Europese Marslander Schiaparelli vorige week woensdag was wellicht aan een fout in de communicatie te wijten. Dit heeft directeur voor Operaties bij het Europese Ruimtevaartbureau ESA Rolf Densing vandaag in het Duitse Darmstadt gezegd. Er was met name een communicatiestoornis tussen software van een radarhoogtemeter en van de navigatie.

Na een reis van zeven maanden en na geslaagde afscheiding van de moedersonde van de eerste Europees-Russische ExoMars-missie is de Schiaparelli (EDM in het ESA-ees) gecrasht en mogelijk ook ontploft op het Marsoppervlak.

Volgens Densing stuurde tijdens de afdaling, die niet van op Aarde werd geleid, een radarhoogtemeter wel informatie maar heeft de navigatie zichzelf uitgeschakeld. Dat is waarschijnlijk op een hoogte van 4 tot 2 km gebeurd, omdat de software van beide niet correct met elkaar heeft gecommuniceerd.

De navigatiesoftware zal hebben gedacht dat de landing reeds was voltrokken. Daarom hebben de negen remraketten enkel de tevoren gekozen minimale tijd van drie seconden gewerkt. Dat had zestig seconden moeten zijn. Waarom de software het liet afweten, dient nog uitgeklaard.

Op ExoMars stond het AMELIA- instrument dat vluchtgegevens verzamelde en doorstuurde, en waarbij de Koninklijke Belgische Sterrenwacht (KSB) betrokken was. De lander voerde ook een "weerstation" mee waarin de KSB participeerde.

De moedersonde Trace Gas Orbiter kwam wel succesvol in een baan rond de Rode Planeet. Ondanks de mislukte landing van de EDM toonde ESA zich tevreden omdat het een test was waarbij voldoende data zijn doorgestuurd.

WETENSCHAP Neen, het mysterie van de Bermudadriehoek is niet opgelost. 'Bizarre wolken boven de Bermudadriehoek lossen eeuwenoud mysterie mogelijk op', kopten zowat alle Amerikaanse nieuwssites na een reportage op Science Channel. Daarin getuigden enkele wetenschappers over de zeshoekige wolken die zich boven het gebied ophouden. Even sloeg de fantasie - niet voor het eerst - op hol.

De Bermudadriehoek is een gebied van 500.000 vierkante kilometer in de Atlantische Oceaan, gelegen tussen Florida, Puerto Rico en de Bermuda-eilanden. Het gebied is wereldberoemd voor de vele mysterieuze verdwijningen die er plaatsvonden: in de loop der eeuwen verdwenen er minstens 75 vliegtuigen en honderden schepen.

En in al die jaren doken er ook evenveel verklaringen op van pseudowetenschappers en complottheoretici - van buitenaardse wezens tot bovennatuurlijke krachten. Maar een echte wetenschappelijke verklaring kwam er nog niet.

Tot enkele nieuwssites afgelopen weekend uitpakten met opmerkelijk nieuws: wetenschappers zouden het eeuwenlange mysterie eindelijk opgelost hebben. De geruchtenmolen kwam op gang na een reportage van Science Channel.

Zeshoekige wolken

Daarin vertelden meteorologen die het gebied bestuderen op basis van satellietbeelden over een weerfenomeen dat ze er gespot hebben. Het gaat om zeshoekige wolken boven het westelijke puntje van de Bermudadriehoek, variërend van 30 tot 90 kilometer doormeter. "Meestal zie je geen rechte randen aan wolken", zegt Steven Miller van Colorado State University. "Meestal zijn wolken veel willekeuriger."

De wolken produceren winden tot 270 kilometer per uur. Randy Cerveny, meteoroloog aan Arizona State University, spreekt van air bombs, of luchtbommen. "Ze worden gevormd door microuitbarstingen, ontploffingen van lucht die uit de onderkant van een wolk komen, de oceaan raken en soms gigantische golven creëren."

Ook boven de Noordzee, aan de Engelse kust, komen dergelijke wolken voor. Daar creëren ze soms golven tot 13 meter hoog. Het is plausibel dat ze dat in de Atlantische Oceaan ook doen, maar een link met de mysterieuze verdwijningen leggen de wetenschappers niet. 

Science Channel zelf doet dat wel: "Deze dodelijke rukwiden kunnen op het land bomen wegrukken, op zee schepen omverblazen en in de lucht vliegtuigen doen crashen. Ze zouden dus een verklaring kunnen bieden voor de verdwijning van schepen en vliegtuigen", klinkt het in de reportage.

"Niet ongewoon"

Het verhaal ging afgelopen weekend een eigen leven leiden op internet. Van wetenschapssites tot grote nieuwssites als NBC, The Independent en The Huffington Post. Maar één publicatie, USA Today, contacteerde de betrokken wetenschappers zelf. En die vertellen plots een heel ander verhaal.

De wolken zijn vreemd om te zien, maar niet ongewoon, zegt Steven Miller aan de website. Deze patronen worden meestal gezien boven de noordelijke Atlantische Oceaan en het noordelijke deel van de Stille Oceaan van de late herfst tot de vroege lente. Ze ontstaan wanneer koude, droge lucht zich mengt boven warm water.

"Het is een gewoon fenomeen, dat wereldwijd voorkomt", aldus Miller. "Het wordt meestal gezien op locaties met een middelmatige tot hoge breedtegraad en gewoonlijk tijdens het koude seizoen." Omdat het fenomeen zo veel voorkomt, kan het geen verklaring bieden voor de bizarre verdwijningen in de Bermudadriehoek, zegt hij.

Randy Cerveny zegt verbaasd te zijn over de reportage, omdat hij geen origineel werk rond het onderwerp gedaan heeft en speculeerde dat het weerpatroon verklaard zou kunnen worden door geconcentreerde uitbarstingen van lucht van afnemende onweders. "Ze deden het uitschijnen alsof ik een grote doorbraak aankondigde. Helaas is dat niet het geval."

De meest opmerkelijke verdwijningen in de Bermudadriehoek

Verhalen over de mysteries van de Bermudadriehoek zijn er al sinds 1492, toen Christopher Columbus sprak van vreemde lichten en vreemde kompasresultaten in het gebied. Sindsdien werd het mysterie almaar groter. Minstens 75 vliegtuigen en honderden schepen zijn op onverklaarbare wijze in het gebied verdwenen. Een overzicht van de meest opmerkelijke verdwijningen:

• Het eerste gerapporteerde scheepswrak dat wordt toegewezen aan de Bermudadriehoek dateert van 1609, toen het Engelse schip The Sea Venture verging aan het oostelijke uiteinde van Bermuda-eiland. Het leidde tot de eerste menselijke nederzetting op het eiland.

• Een griezeliger verhaal is dat van The Ellen Austin in 1881. De bemanning trof er een ander schip dat op zee dreef zonder één levende ziel aan boord. Een deel van de bemanning ging aan boord van het andere schip en probeerde ermee naar New York te zeilen. Het schip verdween plots - tot het weer opdook zonder één persoon aan boord, om nadien weer zonder spoor te verdwijnen.

• Een van de bekendste verdwijningen vond plaats in 1945. Flight 19, een eenheid van vijf torpedobommenwerpers van het Amerikaanse leger, verdween tijdens een trainingsvlucht, nadat alle contact verloren was gegaan. Alle 14 piloten waren vermist, net als de 13 bemanningsleden van een patrouillevliegtuig dat erop uit was gestuurd om de bommenwerpers te zoeken.

• De meest recente tragedie is die van het verdwenen vrachtschip El Faro in 2015. Het schip, met 33 bemanningsleden aan boord, werd als vermist opgegeven nadat het in een orkaan terechtkwam aan de zuidkust van de Bahama's.

"Aliens willen ons op de hoogte brengen van hun bestaan" - HLN.be

Twee wetenschappers van de Laval-universiteit in het Canadese Québec hebben de afgelopen jaren 2,5 miljoen sterren geobserveerd. Bij de overgrote meerderheid daarvan heb ze niets abnormaals kunnen vaststellen, maar bij 234 sterren hoorden ze dusdanig vreemde boodschappen dat ze vermoeden dat het wel eens om buitenaards leven zou kunnen gaan. Dat staat te lezen in The Independent.

Wetenschappers prof. Ermanno Borra en Éric Trottier voerden een studie naar de sterrenhemel. Een fractie van de sterren vertoonde "vreemd gedrag", zonder dat daar meteen een verklaring voor is. Dat leidt de wetenschappers tot de conclusie dat de het wel eens zou kunnen gaan om aliens die ons op de hoogte willen brengen van hun bestaan, klinkt het.

"We hebben ontdekt dat de signalen exact de vorm hebben van een buitenaards signaal dat in een eerdere publicatie voorspeld werd en ze liggen dan ook in lijn met deze hypothese", luidt het. "Het feit dat ze enkel gevonden werden in een kleine fractie van de sterren in een nauw spectrum vlakbij de zon, komt ook overeen met de hypothese van buitenaards leven."

De studie wordt binnenkort gepubliceerd in het vakblad 'Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific', onder de titel "Signals probably from Extraterrestrial Intelligence". Toch benadrukken de wetenschappers dat er dieper zal moeten ingegaan worden op de zaak om de these van aliens al dan niet te bevestigen.

'Alien Megastructure' Star Targeted by $100 Million SETI Search

If intelligent aliens actually do live around Tabby's star, astronomers are determined to find them.

The Breakthrough Listen initiative, which will spend $100 million over the next 10 years to hunt for signals possibly produced by alien civilizations, is set to begin studying Tabby's star with the 330-foot-wide (100 meters) Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia, project team members announced Tuesday (Oct. 25).

"The Green Bank Telescope is the largest fully steerable radio telescope on the planet, and it's the largest, most sensitive telescope that's capable of looking at Tabby's star given its position in the sky," Breakthrough Listen co-director Andrew Siemion, who also directs the Berkeley SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Research Center at the University of California, Berkeley, said in a statement. "We've deployed a fantastic new SETI instrument that connects to that telescope, that can look at many gigahertz of bandwidth simultaneously and many, many billions of different radio channels all at the same time so we can explore the radio spectrum very, very quickly," Siemion added.

The observations will take place for 8 hours per night for three nights over the next two months, with the first observations set to take place Wednesday (Oct. 26), project team members said.

Tabby's star, officially known as KIC 8462852, lies about 1,500 light-years from Earth. Observations by NASA's Kepler space telescope showed that the star dimmed dramatically several times over the past half-decade or so, at one point by a whopping 22 percent. These occasional brightness dips — which were first reported last year by a team led by Yale University postdoc Tabetha Boyajian (hence the star's nickname) — are far too substantial to be caused by an orbiting planet, astronomers have said.

So researchers have offered up a number of alternative explanations for the dimming to date. Perhaps a cloud of comet fragments periodically blocks the star's light, for example, or maybe some unknown structure in the depths of space between Earth and Tabby's star is responsible.

It's even possible that the brightness dips are caused by an "alien megastructure" — an enormous collection of energy-gathering solar panels, for example.

Astronomers have stressed that the megastructure hypothesis is a long shot, but long shots shouldn't be dismissed out of hand, Breakthough Listen team members said.

"I don't think it's very likely — a one-in-a-billion chance or something like that — but nevertheless, we're going to check it out," Dan Werthimer, chief scientist at Berkeley SETI, said in the same statement. "But I think that E.T., if it's ever discovered, it might be something like that. It'll be some bizarre thing that somebody finds by accident … that nobody expected, and then we look more carefully and we say, 'Hey, that's a civilization.'"

A number of other research teams have already searched for signals coming from Tabby's star, and all of those searches have come up empty so far.

For many years, claims about secret Nazi military and research bases located in the harsh terrains of the Arctic and Antarctica were dismissed as fantasy. In fact, these claims were seen as so ridiculous that when a Russian expedition team from the Russian Arctic National Park claimed that they had discovered one of these bases on the island of Alexandra (approximately a thousand kilometers from the North Pole) they were largely ignored.

MYSTERY NAZI BASE DISCOVERED IN THE ARCTIC

 

 However, there can no longer be any doubt that these secret bases really did exist as the Russian team who came across the base have released video evidence of over five hundred differently artifacts uncovered from the Nazi bunker. The ruins of the base itself as well as materials and paper documents can be seen to be fairly well preserved because of the intensely cold conditions that they were kept in. 

 

The Russian team says that the base was referred to as ‘Treasure Hunter’ and it was built in 1942, just one year before the Nazis launched an assault in Russia. It is believed that the base was not used for a particularly long period and that it had to be evacuated of all personnel in 1944 after an illness broke out. It is believed that the disease was caused by personnel members eating contaminated polar bear meat. Mysteriously, in 1950 – several years after the end of the Second World War and the fall of the Third Reich, someone returned to the base and destroyed it. Who could have done this and why is still a complete mystery to investigators.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 The team is not entirely sure what the purpose of this secret Arctic base could have been for the Nazis, but they have some avenues to pursue. It is known that the Nazis were particularly interested in archaeology which they often used to sustain their ideology of Aryan supremacy, so it is possible that they were looking for evidence of a lost Aryan civilization in the Arctic. More bizarrely, the Nazis were also interested in occult or holy items that they believed would grant them power – including the highly mythologised Holy Grail. Could it be that this is what they were seeking under the ice? Or could it be that they were looking for evidence of hidden ancient technologies in the Arctic region? All of these theories are plausible in light of the Nazis’ other wartime expedition activities. 

 

For now, it all remains a mystery but the team, along with other experts have every intention of getting to the bottom of it.

A Washington witness at Marysville reported watching and videotaping a hovering triangle UFO with three lights, according to testimony in Case 79072 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The witness and his wife were sitting in their backyard at 3:45 p.m. on September 10, 2016, when the incident occurred.

“As I sat, I just so happened to look up,” the witness stated.“The sky was blue and cloudless. As I looked up I saw what at first I thought might be a satellite, but quickly realized it had lights of changing color and movement.”

The witness then thought it might be an approaching plane with its lights on.

“All this time my wife was also observing the object. I have video of it. We observed this for almost 15 minutes, 10 of which the object did not move its position in the sky.”

Washington MUFON State Section Director Timothy Ward investigated this case and closed it as an Unknown.

“I spoke to the witness and his wife,” Ward wrote in his final report.“They told me the same story. They saw an object with three bright, golden lights on a triangle object probably at a 60-degree angle from the horizon. Object comes in from the north and hovers for 10 minutes as they video recorded it. They have never seen anything like this in the day time. As they watched it hovering it moved off to the east.”

The investigator checked for ISS and satellites and none found in this area at the observation time.Chief Investigator Maryanne Snyder checked files and no video manipulation was found. There are eight cases in MUFON CMS of triangles in the last two months in Washington State.

“I am going to conclude this as a UAV because of the triangle shape, movement during daylight hours and witnesses’ credibility.”

This video was recorded by Richard205Maria of Youtube, using their camera attached to a telescope. His editing software allows us to see its actual shape...a perfect saucer...two of them. There is no way these disks are satellites. First off, satellites wont be side by side for risk of crashing into on another and destroy each other. Second, we don't see any arms or solar panels to collect energy or transmit messages. Therefore, these are actual UFOs, flying in military style, because they are flying with a wingman, to keep each other out of possible trouble. These two...are prepared to fight, and that worries me. Please stop by Richard205Maria and give their video a thumbs up for support. Great work there.

 Carolina UFO Sighting

Here one interesting video of a group of bright lights hovering above Surf City in North Carolina.

Witness report: 

1. My wife and I were sitting out on our deck around 11PM on August 27, 2016. We noticed a group of orange, glowing orbs from the northeast about 10 feet above the house across the street. They floated slowly and silently towards our direction. We noticed them because we were seated facing north, so you couldn’t miss them unless you were asleep. We both observed these object with a skeptics eye at first, but it was unlike anything we had ever seen before. They made absolutely no noise. There was no frame to them (like a Chinese lantern). We saw them from the side and from directly underneath. I rushed into the house, grabbed my camera and told my daughter to come see these objects. I exited our deck into the front yard and started filming. There was 5 of them. They were hovering just above the power lines. The objects were in a line, one behind the other. As they reached our house they moved into a circular formation. They hovered above our house for about 20-30 seconds before going back into a linear formation and moving on towards the southwest. My wife then noticed that a sixth orb was hovering just 5 or so feet above our house as if it was curious of us. That’s when my dog started to bark at the object. It hovered over us for about 10 seconds before joining the other 5 orbs. As they all floated away in the distance, they seemed to just disappeared. There was no wind. There was no noise. They were always at least 15-40 feet away from us until they finally floated off and disappeared in the distance.

Watch this UFO destroying a chemtrail over Paris, France

This interesting daytime footage was recorded over Paris, France on 28th September 2016.

Witness report:

 I caught an extraordinary UFO sighting. I was watching an odd looking light crossing the sky at variable speeds around my house, during the sunset. To me it was just some sort of helicopter, or maybe a drone. But after 5 or 10 minutes, I began suspecting the object not to be man-made. It was performing weird maneuvers, accelerating and decelerating randomly. When the light started to accelerate towards a huge Chemtrail, I took my camcorder and tried to find it in the distance.
The object stopped in front of the Chemtrail, and slowly destroyed it. Indeed, the trail was being “consumed” progressively. I was simply speechless. I still can’t believe what I caught. The Chemtrail got literally perforated! I can’t be 100% sure it’s due to the object itself, but I’m sure there’s a link between it and the Chemtrail. Such a huge trail can’t just disappear like that, for no reason! And only a small portion of the trail gets erased, justly around the object!
After the UFO attacked the trail, it moved backwards and flied West, in my opposite direction. It disappeared pretty quickly.
Sorry for zooming out a little bit too early, my camcorder screen is really small, and doesn’t have that much pixels… The object got so far away at the end, I simply thought it was not there anymore.
What was that object? Man-made prototype to delete Chemtrails? Some extra-terrestrial technology made to protect us? (maybe a bit far-fetched, but seriously, have you ever seen that before?) I just don’t have a clue of what this is.

UFO Sighting Revealed In Leaked U.S. Security Footage

Another footage has made the rounds online that may have confirmed a real UFO sighting. The video that has been leaked is said to belong to the Department of Homeland Security of the U.S.

The alleged leaked video shows a UFO ascending from the sea and splitting in half. The movements of the object are so strange to everybody. The mysterious object appears to be a metallic sphere. It moves quickly above and dives into the ocean, then seems to change shape or tumble.

The Scientific Coalition for Ufology (SCU) claimed that the video was from the DHS through a whistleblower. SCU website says the UFO has different features to any known object and its characteristics can’t be explained.

Since it made available online, several others came forward to claim they also saw the UFO.

SCU just released the video recently, but they noted that it was shot back in 2013. They explained that the released of the video had been delayed to confirm its authenticity first before publishing it for the public.

According to the report, the video was shot at an airport in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico on April 25, 2013, 9:20 p.m. The DHS crew of a DHC-8 Turboprop aircraft from Customs and Border Protection of the U.S. reportedly monitored the UFO activity.

According to the report, the crew of the DHC-8 plane noticed a strange, pinkish, red light over the ocean during its routine flight. Not informed of any incoming traffic, they radioed the presence of the UFO.

The tower crew responded that they also noticed the object but could not identify it.

SCU confirmed the flight was delayed due to the UFO sighting that night. Also revealed in the report is the video of the plane circling the airport two times before taking off.

The unknown object was allegedly flying from 40 mph to 120 mph at between 3 and 5 feet. The strangest part of the incident was that it went into the ocean about half a mile before darting back up and out of the ocean and appeared to split into two.

Chunk of Lightweight Metal Is Believed To Be An Old Proof That Alien Once Visited Earth

A mysterious piece of aluminum is being considered as 250,000-year-old evidence of alien existence on Earth. The old metal was discovered in communist Romania in 1973, but it wasn’t made public at the time.

After several examinations, the object is found to have made of 12 metals and 90 percent aluminum. Romanian officials concluded it is a 250,000 years old chunk of metal.

A laboratory in Lausanne, Switzerland later confirmed the initial results.

The large chunk is being hailed as an intriguing find because humanity wasn’t producing metallic aluminum until around 200 years ago.

In 1973, three objects measuring 33 feet or 10 meters was discovered under the ground on the shores of the Mures River. Archeologists identified two of the objects as fossils. The third one is a light metal and suspected to be the end of an ax.

All objects being discovered were sent to Cluj City in the region of Transylvania, Romania. Experts quickly determined the two as large bones of an extinct large mammal that died around 10,000 to 80,000 years ago. However, they were stunned to know that the third object was a piece of lightweight metal that seemed to have been manufactured.

The object in question is 7.8 inches or 20 centimeters long, 4.9 inches or 12.5 centimeters wide, and 2.8 inches or 7 centimeters thick.

Puzzled experts concluded that the piece of metal could be manufactured as part of a more complex mechanical system because it has concavities.

Now, the results have brought speculations of UFO and alien visitations in the past.

Deputy Director of the Romanian Ufologists Association, Gheorghe Cohal, believes that there’s a big chance that the third object is an old UFO fragment because it comprises with substances that could not be combined with technology on Earth.

Meanwhile, local historian Mihai Wittenberger believes the object is just a piece of a German aircraft during World War II, particularly from the landing gear of Messerschmitt ME 262.

However, this suggestion doesn’t explain the age of the lightweight metal.

The mysterious metal object is currently on display at the History Museum of Cluj-Napoca with a description saying “origin still unknown.”

I only got the end of it before it dissappeared – It was around 8pm were having a family party theres about 100 guest present and my cousin starts filming me and notices 2 lights and in spanish he says “Oh were dead look they are coming for us” By they he meant the lights and in the video he films the lights right before they dissappear. Once they dissappeared they never appeared again

UFO Sighting 2016: Fleet of UFOs spotted in Santiago’s Sky in Mysterious footage

In another alien and UFO related activity, a mysterious footage has come up on YouTube that shows a supposed fleet of flying saucers over Santiago's sky in Chile, South America.

Ever since the footage surfaced, people have begun to talk about the extraterrestrial activity as a fair number of viewers think that the sighting was nothing but UFOs.

The video which has been snapped over Santiago's sky appears to show four flying saucers, reports Daily Express. At first, the glowing lights seem to be floating in the distance, making a strange formation and then they spread out only to disappear completely in seconds. The pictures were taken on Thursday at 6 p.m. local time.

Later, they were sent by the photographer to the Mutual UFO Network aka MUFON- the biggest organization in the world dedicated to UFO research and study. According to the said photographer, he did not take the pictures with the intention of capturing UFOs and they were detected later after a review of the snapshots.

On the other hand, MUFON has said that it gets so many reports on a daily basis that it is unable to investigate every case. Nevertheless, it would not take much time for the body to figure out if they are UFOs or something else. As of now, some, including one forensic investigator of UFO pictures, said that they might also be reflections of light inside the building from where the photos were taken.

Meanwhile, the social media is divided in opinion about the video of the flying saucers, reports The Daily Mail. One viewer says that he initially thought that the flying objects were Chinese lanterns tied together but they were moving at a great speed. Another said that they seemed very real. Some said that the UFO claims were false as the lights were nothing but drones flying over the city.

It may be mentioned here that Chile has witnessed many UFO sightings and one of its cities, Andean town of San Clemente has become the hub of such activities and it is known as the country's capital for flying objects.

'Spiders' on Mars: Citizen Scientists Investigate Strange Martian Terrain

"Spidery" channels spotted near Mars' south pole by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) has been surveying strange "spider-like" surface features on Mars for years, and now citizen scientists are helping the orbiter hone in on areas that require further investigation. 

These prominent surface features are found near Mars' south pole, and are believed to be linked to seasonal changes. The planet's polar ice caps thaw bottom-side first in the spring, causing carbon dioxide to build up and carve deep channels in the terrain, according to a statement from NASA. 

"The trapped carbon dioxide gas that carves the spiders in the ground also breaks through the thawing ice sheet. It lofts dust and dirt that local winds then sculpt into hundreds of thousands of dark fans that are observed from orbit," Meg Schwamb, a planetary scientist from the Gemini Observatory in Hawaii, said in the statement. "For the past decade, [the orbiter's instrument] HiRISE has been monitoring this process on other parts of the south pole." [Latest Photos from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter]]

Context Camera (CTX) aboard the MRO captured the images of these spider-like cracks and crevices, which volunteer citizen scientists have analyzed using the website "Planet Four: Terrains." 

With the observations from this citizen science project, NASA has added 20 new regions to the agency's seasonal monitoring campaign on Mars. The orbiter's High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera will explore these regions in greater detail. 

"It's heartwarming to see so many citizens of planet Earth donate their time to help study Mars," Candice Hansen, HiRISE deputy principal investigator, said in the statement. "Thanks to the discovery power of so many people, we're using HiRISE to take images of places we might not have studied without this assistance."

The new places of interest on Mars include some unexpected spider terrain, areas where the surface is composed of material that was ejected from impact craters. Previously, those areas were not associated with carbon dioxide ice sheets, and therefore not thought to have spider-like crevices. 

The spider cracks may have formed on the material ejected from craters using a different mechanism than the ice sheets, Hansen said. "Perhaps on surfaces that are more erodible, relative to other surfaces, slab ice would not need to be present as long, or [need to be] as thick, for spiders to form. We have new findings, and new questions to answer, thanks to all the help from volunteers," Hansen added.

2. Extreme Access

Engineers at NASA's Kennedy Space Center have invented an autonomous quadcopter, or drone, to fly on Mars. The machines are fast and flexible and can squeeze into places that other Mars robots cannot. They will be able to collect soil samples and return them to a mothership, which doubles as a charging station. Read more about the Mars drones here.

3. Entomopter

Insects inspired the design for this aircraft, called an Entomopter. Conventional types of helicopters and airplanes would have a hard time maneuvering through Mars' thin atmosphere, but the rapidly flapping wings on this aircraft design make flying on the Red Planet more practical. Other aircraft have to fly at over 250 mph (or 400 km/h) to remain airborne, which means that landing or taking off from the Martian surface are out of the question. But the Entomopter can fly slowly, land, take off and even crawl! It would be able to collect samples and return to a home base (like the rover pictured in the foreground) to recharge. A team led by Anthony Colozza at the Ohio Aerospace Institute in Cleveland received funding from NASA's Institute for Advanced Concepts in 2002 to develop this design for a Mars aircraft. Watch the Entomopter in action in this video.

4. LDSD, the 'Flying Saucer'

NASA's Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator project combines a balloon with a rocket to deliver huge payloads to the Martian surface — up to 15 tons. Mars Science Lab, the Curiosity rover, weighs only 1 ton and is currently the biggest spacecraft to land on Mars. LDSD could one day even deliver something as heavy as 100 tons or more, NASA officials said. The flying-saucer-shaped balloon will help slow down the landing in Mars' thin atmosphere. Read more about LDSD here.

5. Prandtl Glider

Student interns at NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California, helped to design this prototype of an engineless Mars glider called Prandtl-m. The design for this glider was inspired by boomerangs and birds and is based on a concept developed by German engineer Ludwig Prandtl around a century ago. This glider has no rudder and a slight twist in its wings, which helps to minimize air resistance and maximize efficiency. At Mars, it would be deployed high up in the atmosphere and collect data while floating down to the surface. NASA said it hopes to see one of its Prandtl gliders hitch a ride to Mars with the upcoming Mars 2020 rover mission. Read more about the Prandtl project here.

8. Tumbleweed Rovers

One proposed way to travel on Mars is essentially a giant beach ball that rolls around in the wind. It wouldn't need any engines — just the wind. Engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory said that a payload of scientific instuments would be suspended inside the ball with tension cords. If scientists decide that one of these rovers needs to stop to take a measurement, the ball can be partially deflated to keep it from blowing away. NASA has already performed field tests with tumbleweed rover prototypes on Earth, but they have yet to be tested on Mars.

So far the most popular type of robotic Mars explorer has been the rover. These types of Mars robots are somewhat comparable to vehicles that rove around on Earth, at roughly the size of a compact sedan. Several rovers have been sent to Mars, but only two are still functioning today: NASA's Curiosity (Mars Science Laboratory) and Opportunity. Another NASA rover, named Spirit — Opportunity's twin — went silent in 2010 after one of its wheels became trapped in the Martian sand. 

Though the remote-controlled rovers may be the most intuitive form of robot for humans to build and operate, they do have some drawbacks. Aside from the risk of getting stuck like Spirit did, rovers can't drive very fast on Mars. Curiosity creeps along at about 2 inches (5 centimeters) per second, or 0.11 mph (0.18 km/h). Red Spider Nebula Haunts Deep Space in Hubble Photo

Using Hubble's powerful camera, an image of the Red Spider Nebula in the constellation of Sagittarius clearly displays the power of the stellar wind expanding the lobes.

The Red Spider Nebula welcomes Halloween with its eerie lobes and ghostly shine.

Large ripples constitute the expansive lobes of the Red Spider Nebula. The two lobes of the nebula represent a typical expression at the end of a star's life, with material from the star gushing into space at high speeds. [Haunting Photos: The Spookiest Nebulas in Space]

The nebula, thousands of light years from Earth in the constellation of Sagittarius, contains one of the hottest known stars which creates waves 100 billion kilometers (62.4 billion miles) high with its powerful cosmic winds. The speed of the waves arise from supersonic shocks forming from local gas compression, heating and rapid expansion in the lobes. Atoms trapped in the the shock create the dazzling radiation seen here.

The Hubble Space Telescope captured using the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WPFC2) in September pf 1997. The WPFC2 uses five different filters and light from the different elements are colored differently — sulfur ions in red, nitrogen ions in orange, ionized hydrogen in green, atomic oxygen in light blue and ionized oxygen in dark blue.

Hubble has been returning images of the deep recesses of our Universe to us since April of 1990. After being repaired and upgraded with five separate Space Shuttle missions, with the last in 2009. While Hubble could operate into the 2030s, its successor, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is scheduled to launch in 2018.

Moving Past Volcano Live Cam On Oct 24, 2016, Video, UFO Sighting News

Here is a great example of rods. They were caught yesterday on a live volcano cam. There rods following each other side by side. Also in the distance a unknown craft moves closer to the volcano, but the video ends so we could not see if it emerges or not from the other side. Its rare to catch one, but to see three fly side by side. Wow, very exciting video.

Saturn’s Hexagonal Storm Mysteriously Changes From Blue to Gold

• Astronomers have noted a change in the color scheme of Saturn's hexagonal storm from a bluish color to a more golden hue.
• NASA experts assert this may be due to the increased production of photochemical hazes in the atmosphere as the north pole approaches summer solstice in May 2017.

A WHIRLWIND OF COLORS

The mysterious hexagon on Saturn’s north pole has just changed colors, as shown in recently released photos taken by NASA’s Cassini spacecraft. Discovered roughly 30 years ago, the geometric figure on Saturn’s northernmost area is actually a storm, which has been raging for decades, or even centuries.

The six-sided figure spans about 32,000 km (20,000 miles) in diameter, and extends for 100 km (60 miles) into the gas giant’s atmosphere. Each point in the hexagon rotates at its center at almost the same rate Saturn rotates on its axis. The perpetual hurricane in middle of the hexagon is constantly blasted by a jet stream of air at 321 km/h (200 mph).

Baffled scientists can only point to one probable explanation. According to NASA,

“The color change is thought to be an effect of Saturn’s seasons. In particular, the change from a bluish color to a more golden hue may be due to the increased production of photochemical hazes in the atmosphere as the north pole approaches summer solstice in May 2017.”

MYSTERIOUS LIKE MOST

Researchers believe the hexagon’s sides act like barriers, preventing haze particles from outside to enter. This likely explains why the hexagon turned blue sometime between November 1995 and August 2009, during a polar winter night. Presumably, while it was devoid of sunlight, Saturn’s north pole became clear of aerosols produced by photochemical reactions.

After Saturn’s equinox in August 2009, the planet’s polar atmospheres have been bathed in sunlight. Photochemical reactions in the atmosphere were triggered, producing aerosols that make the north pole’s hexagon hurricane hazy and appear golden in the recent Cassini photo.

It shouldn’t really come as a surprise that we don’t understand much of what’s going on in our giant gas neighbor. The mysteries of space continually baffle us, until technological advancescatch up and explain the previously unexplainable.

At that point, we’ll no longer be amazed. We’ll be mesmerized.
