Alien breakthrough as scientists make MASSIVE leap in hunt for extraterrestrial life

SPACE boffins have made a key discovery in the search for extraterrestrial life.

Brit astronomers are probing two new "super-Earth" planets in the hunt for life in our universe.

As a planet orbits, it causes its parent star to wobble by a tiny degree.

Astronomers can see the signature of this effect in the star’s light.

"We're getting tantalisingly close to observing the correct limits required for detecting Earth-like planets”, said lead researcher Dr Fabo Feng, from the University of Hertfordshire.

Stars the size of the Sun are the best targets for finding habitable Earth-seized planets.

Tau Ceti is similar to our Sun in size and brightness, and like our Sun hosts a multi-planet system.

Scientists hope that direct imaging of the two outer planets could show them to be rocky and habitable.

But, they did warn that a massive disc of debris around the star could be bombarding them with asteroids and comets, reducing their habitability.

Co-author Dr Mikko Tuomi, also from the University of Hertfordshire, said improved techniques were making it easier to distinguish between light signals caused by the presence of planets and stellar activity.

Two Tau Ceti signals previously identified in 2013 are now known not to have a planetary origin.

"But no matter how we look at the star, there seems to be at least four rocky planets orbiting it," Dr Tuomi said.

"We're slowly learning to tell the difference between wobbles caused by planets and those caused by stellar active surface.

"This enabled us to verify the existence of the two outer, potentially habitable, planets in the system."

The discovery comes as NASA offered an up-close look at the Trappist-1 exoplanets – believed to be key in the hunt for life.

They are also considering launching the Titan Mare Explorer, which would probe the world in a bid to find aliens.

It would take seven years to reach the moon of Saturn and spend six months on the surface looking for proof of life.

And in June, the space agency said it had discovered more than 200 new planets – 10 of which were the right size and temperature to sustain life.

Curiosity snaps fast-moving clouds in the Martian sky

Even robots exploring other planets need to take some time to unwind and just watch the clouds for a while. The Curiosity rover, which just last week celebrated its fifth anniversary on the Red Planet, has now sent back some of the clearest photos yet taken of extraterrestrial clouds.

The slideshows are made up of two sets of eight images, taken early in the morning of July 17. For the first set, the camera was pointed directly above the rover, while the second set of snaps captured the sky above the southern horizon.

To get the resulting level of clarity in the movement of the clouds, the images were enhanced by Curiosity's science team at York University. By generating an "average" of the light across all the frames of each group, and then subtracting the average from each individual frame, the changes in movement from one shot to the next could be emphasized.

Clouds may be an everyday occurrence here on Earth, but due to the elliptical orbit of Mars they're much more seasonal, forming a belt around the equator when the planet is at its furthest point from the Sun. Their presence two months before that happens means this is relatively early for the appearance of the cloud belt.

"It is likely that the clouds are composed of crystals of water ice that condense out onto dust grains where it is cold in the atmosphere," says John Moores, a scientist on the Curiosity team. "The wisps are created as those crystals fall and evaporate in patterns known as 'fall streaks' or 'mare's tails.' While the rover does not have a way to ascertain the altitude of these clouds, on Earth such clouds form at high altitude."

Hey neighbors! Nearest sun-like star hosts 4 Earth-sized planets

Tau Ceti has been a staple of science fiction for decades. Now we know a little more about the real worlds around the bright star.

Last year we learned the nearest star beyond our sun has a planet about the size of Earth, but it's very different than our solar system and not an ideal candidate for finding alien life.

So what about the closest star that would actually remind us of our own beloved sun? We now know that it probably hosts a handful of Earth-like planets, including a pair that might be able to support life.

Tau Ceti is the center of the nearest solar system that's similar to ours, an assumption made stronger by the discovery of four rocky super-Earths orbiting the star just 12 light years away.

Two of the four planets are in the habitable zone around the star where temperatures could be just right for liquid water, and perhaps alien life, to be present. 

An international team of scientists devised a new, more accurate and sensitive method of detecting planets by looking for "wobbles" in the star's movement caused by the minute gravitational tug of orbiting planets, while also better ruling out false positives coming from activity on the star itself.

"But no matter how we look at the star, there seem to be at least four rocky planets orbiting it," said Mikko Tuomi of the University of Hertfordshire, in a release. "We are slowly learning to tell the difference between wobbles caused by planets and those caused by stellar active surface. This enabled us to essentially verify the existence of the two outer, potentially habitable planets in the system."  

Tuomi is one of the co-authors on a paper detailing the discovery, which has been accepted for upcoming publication in the Astrophysical Journal.

Tau Ceti is particularly prevalent in science fiction that imagines future civilizations visiting the relatively nearby star system. Unfortunately, the odds of life on the potentially habitable rocky planets in the system might not be great after all. A massive disc of debris around the star means that the planets are likely being bombarded by asteroids and comets, making it hard for life to emerge.

Then again, certain life forms are known to be pretty tough, so perhaps we'll discover one day that a civilization of Tau Cetian tardigrades thrives on the system's planets.

Exclusive Photo Showing UFOs Fly Over Crop Circles

UFOs flying over farmland in Wiltshire left crop circle expert in awe. Pierre Beake claims to have captured the strange event on video shooting at speed across a renowned crop circle site. Mr Beake has spent many years researching crop circles in the south west of England and is convinced that they cannot all be the work of hoaxers. Beake’s video shows balls of light speeding across Milk Hill in Wiltshire. Beake said that this is not the first time he witnessed such thing as he also captured several alleged balls of light on still camera around crop circles.

Crop circles are believed to be made by landing UFOs, but they have been widely considered one of the biggest paranormal hoaxes since 1991. Doug Bower and David Chorley showed how they made many of the reported crop circle patterns found across the UK. The duo demonstrated how the use of wooden planks and rope flatten corn in a circular pattern. The pair admitted that they did crop circles in the 1970s to tease locals who believed in UFOs. Since then, a lot more circle makers have made more complicated designs as if they want to outdo each other.

However, many others refuse to believe all crop circles are human-made. Mr Beake said that when you go in a crop circle for the first time, you can’t explain the feeling. He explained that it is a great feeling and you feel nice.

Mr Beake showed two videos. One video features a bright light in the distance flying across the field. Mr Beake said that it is windy, but the bright light stays at the same speed with the same force. Another Mr Beake’s clip shows some people in the fields of Milk Hill, near Alton Priors in Wiltshire. He stated that the shot is incredible as it shows ten individuals who went on the hill to see balls of light. Mr Beake also showed an array of pictures apparently showing balls of light above crop circles.

This daytime UFO sighting of a cigar-shaped object happened on 15th May 2017 over Atlanta, Georgia.

It came out of a cloud, rotating slowly and went into another cloud. I was leaving work around 6pm and as I was walking to my car on the rooftop deck this large object caught my eye. I looked up and stared in disbelief as this large greyish cylinder shaped object slowly rotated length wise and was moving very slowly from one cloud into the next. It was a bright sunny summer afternoon with lots of big clouds in the sky. The object was that dark grey color like the cloud it came from. It was moving very slowly into the next set of clouds.

Einstein's Relativity Tested by Giant Star and Monster Black Hole

A giant star near the center of our galaxy hints, once again, that Albert Einstein was correct about gravity.

A group of astronomers in Germany and the Czech Republic observed three stars in a cluster near the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy. Using data from the Very Large Telescope in Chile, among others, the researchers tracked how the stars moved as they went around the monster black hole.

One of the stars, called S2, showed slight deviations in its orbit that might indicate relativistic effects, scientists said. If the observations are confirmed, then it shows that Einstein's theory of general relativity holds even under extreme conditions — in gravity fields produced by objects like the galactic center's black hole, which contains the mass of 4 million suns. General relativity says that massive objects bend the space around them, causing other objects to deviate from straight lines they would follow absent any forces on them. [The Strangest Black Holes of the Universe]

"Most relativity tests are done with our sun and the stars, so they are in the 1-solar-mass or few-solar-mass[es] limit," Andreas Eckart, a professor of experimental physics at the University of Cologne in Germany, who led the research team, told Space.com. "Or with the [Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory] recently, that's a few 10s of solar masses." 

The stars used in the observations are so close to the black hole that they move at 1 or 2 percent the speed of light, Eckart said, and they approach to within only about 100 times the Earth-sun distance of the black hole itself, which is quite close by galactic standards, he said. (Pluto averages about 39 times the Earth's distance from the sun, which is about 93 million miles or 150 million kilometers).

Using orbiting bodies to show relativistic effects is not new; observations of the planet Mercury in the 19th centuryshowed that its movements deviated from what Isaac Newton's theory of gravity predicted. At first, astronomers thought they had evidence of another planet, which they dubbed Vulcan. Einstein was able to show in 1915 that relativity could explain the deviation.

Mercury's motions proved Einstein correct, but the sun's gravity is weak compared to that of a supermassive black hole. This is why Eckart and his team set out to see if Einstein's theory held up in a more extreme environment. While gravitational lensing, the bending of light by massive objects, shows that massive objects bend space, the recent research is the first time anyone has taken precise measurements of any object orbiting so close to a black hole.

Here's What It's Like to Be the Planetary Protection Officer at NASA

If you want a job protecting Earth from threats from outer space — or even protecting Mars from us — NASA has an opening for you — sort of. The job of planetary protection officer generated quite a bit of buzz last week, when the public learned that a role seemingly out of a science fiction novel was actually a bonafide NASA job. But the position has nothing to do with protecting Earth from little green men, but a whole lot to do with important interplanetary science.

A primary task of the officer is to make sure that during NASA missions earthly microbes don't contaminate potentially habitable environments. And should a mission bring back samples from outer space, the officer is tasked with making sure that dust, or rocks, or whatever is brought back from outer space doesn't contaminate us.

John Rummel, a biology professor at East Carolina University, held the position twice, first between 1990 and 1993 and again from 1998 to 2006.

"The planetary protection job was mostly challenging in that it was not just important for each mission to do the right — required by requirements — thing, but to know why they were doing it, and why it was important to do a good job," Rummel said. "From that aspect, the job was definitely worth it. But as to 'rewards,' those were mostly internal."

Rummel explained that the planetary protection office reports to the associate administrator for each mission, who oversees the cost of the project. That means recommendations made by the officer are often judged in the context of whether or not they will cost the administrator more money — a vexing problem many of us might easily understand from our own work experiences.

Rummel's time as planetary protection officer coincided with the restart of NASA's Mars program.

After the successful twin Viking landings of the 1970s, a few famous searching-for-life experiments came up empty. NASA shifted its attention to other locations in the solar system, and Mars didn't get a launch opportunity until the failed Mars Observer mission in 1992.

A slew of missions followed, however, including the Mars Pathfinder mission that made it all the way to the surface in 1996 and deployed a mini-rover – Sojourner. Several other landing and orbiting missions followed — some successful, others not.

Fifteen years ago, Sojourner rolled down a specially engineered ramp to leave the first ever rover tracks on Mars.

Those missions wouldn't have been possible without the approval of the planetary protection officer, who ensured that Sojourner and other Martian spacecraft were sterile enough to prevent microbes from taking root in potentially life-friendly areas. One of Rummel's first tasks in 1990 was to look at the risk of contamination on Mars and how scientific understanding had changed since the days of the Viking missions.

"I knew people would like to go back and land on Mars, but I also knew we didn't have current advice," Rummel said.

So he assisted in the drafting of a 1992 report – Biological Contamination of Mars. The report concluded that a large part of the surface was "extremely inhospitable to terrestrial life" and for that reason, future missions would not need to be sterilized as much as the Viking missions.

But changes in landing technology meant that NASA had to be extra mindful of different scenarios for its missions. Pathfinder, for example, was supposed to fall to the surface using airbags. If the airbags failed, the mission would need to withstand a fall and possible burial in the soil of up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) without exposing possible Earth microbes to the Martian environment.

NASA has seen extensive evidence of briny water flow in recurring slope lineae, which are features that develop on the slopes of craters. Rummel, among others, speculated about recurring slope lineae as early as 2002. While researchers have long observed the formations, it was only in 2015 that NASA had strong enough evidence to say the formations are probably due to liquid water on the surface.

Rummel warned against sending Curiosity to investigate a nearby recurring slope lineae. The materials on the rover's surface could not be thoroughly sterilized with UV radiation due to their properties. And inside the rover is a warm electronics box that could melt any ice with which the box comes into contact.

Rummel was also part of early-stage planning for a "sample return" mission to bring pieces of Mars back to Earth, in collaboration with the French space agency CNES. While that mission never went forward, NASA has left the door open for future sample return missions. The next Mars rover, called Mars 2020, is expected to leave "caches" of interesting material behind for future missions to potentially pick up and bring back to Earth, when we presumably know a little more about how to protect ourselves.

Of course, Mars wasn't the only target of note back in the 1990s when Rummel began his work. NASA already had a Jupiter probe — called Galileo — and was about to launch Cassini, which has now been orbiting Saturn since 2004. Those missions confirmed some intriguing Voyager mission results from the 1970s and 1980s, showing that some of the moons are icy and potentially habitable.

Rummel remembers modifying the planetary protection plan for Galileo as evidence emerged that a liquid ocean might lie underneath Europa's icy surface.

At the end of Galileo's mission, an option was included to deliberately crash the probe into Io or Jupiter, just in case it happened to fall into Europa, damaging a potentially habitable environment underneath the ice. Because the mission planners were uncomfortable with changing Galileo's orbit to fall into Io, they went for a Jupiter extermination — collecting science all the way down.

NASA said the job posting has generated "a lot of excitement," including from Jack Davis a fourth grader from New Jersey and self-described "Guardian of the Galaxy." In a letter to the agency, Davis said he was fit for the job because his sister thought he was an alien, among other qualifications.

Although the planetary protection officer is no intergalactic warrior, it's a position that clearly provokes the imagination of skywatchers young and old.

While considered the perfect living space by many, the spaceship homes designed by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen were thought to be an horrendous eye sore by others.

The pods were originally designed as ski chalets, made from lightweight material so they could be transported between various locations.

Resembling something from a sci-fi film, doors and windows of the alternative properties are based on the design of an aircraft and the indoor living spaces are made up of a kitchen, bedroom and bathroom.

But as oil prices soared, the once-fashionable homes and holiday cabins became unaffordable and were left to crumble and rot to the ground.

Along with the Futuro homes, Matti Suuronen also designed a series of Venturo pre-fab houses.

While Suuronen is best known for his futuristic homes, he has also designed petrol stations, kiosks, detached and terraced homes as well as public buildings.

Also the “out of this world” appearance in the sky over Wakpala, South Dakota is such an unexplained phenomenon.

Our daughter and I were taking a walk in the prairies surrounding our house on Highway 1806, Wakpala, South Dakota on August 7, 2017. We stopped at a spot where I was taking pictures of my daughter on a rock and trying to make her smile.

I did not notice at the time the UFO. There was no sound. When we were reviewing the four photos we noticed the UFO.

On the first photo the UFO is above our daughter's head in the clouds but very visible as I am guessing it was stationary.

On the second photo the UFO moved slightly to the right but still clearly visible.

On the third photo is when the UFO is moving towards me on the sky and this is depicted by how it is now bigger but a bit blurry.

On the fourth photo, there is no trace of the UFO as it must have disappeared above our heads.

The whole thing took about 30-40 seconds as I was taking back to back photos of our daughter trying to make her smile. I was preoccupied with her as I was trying to get a good picture so did not notice the UFO at the time. The photographer reported the object to the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) along with the images.

Note: Although the photographer talks about a UFO, the object, which changes shape, looks more like some kind of being coming from another world.

‘Laser SETI’ Broadens the Search for Extraterrestrial Life

The SETI Institute has launched a crowdfunding drive for the first "all-sky, all-the-time search" for signs of alien civilization.

The best way to find laser flashes from an alien civilization is to look everywhere, all the time, and a new project aims to do just that.

The SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute in Mountain View, California, has released details of the effort, which it calls "Laser SETI: First-Ever All-Sky All-the-Time Search."

The first flash from the group is that it has launched a crowdfunding drive to support the project via the website Indiegogo, which you can read about here.

Though Laser SETI is cost-effective, astronomy-grade cameras must be purchased and optics fabricated, SETI Institute researchers said. The organization aims to raise $100,000 via the crowdfunding campaign, which runs through Aug. 18.

Aliens: On the air, all the time?
"The universe we call home is vast!" said SETI Institute president and CEO Bill Diamond. "It's also nearly 14 billion years old, so it's very difficult to imagine that we are alone. Yet extraterrestrial life still eludes our efforts to find it. Now you have a chance to be a part of the technology that can change that forever."

For the last 50 years, whether the extraterrestrials are wielding massive radio transmitters or high-powered lasers, astronomers carrying out SETI experiments have assumed that the aliens are on the air, all the time.

"But that might not be right," Diamond said. "After all, would these otherworldly beings relentlessly target our solar system if, like the overwhelming majority of galactic stars, they're more than 100 light-years away — far enough that they haven't learned we're here, because our own signals haven't yet reached them?"

Laser SETI is the first experiment to circumvent this assumption, Diamond adds, "because it's designed to find a very short ping that doesn't stay on all the time — it can detect a laser flash as short as a microsecond, and one that might not repeat for days, weeks, or even longer."

Rogue planet about to smash into Earth, claim conspiracy theorists

Conspiracy theorists around the world are claiming that a planet will collide with Earth this September - and that the coming solar eclipse will signal the apocalypse's beginning.

David Meade, author of Planet X - The 2017 Arrival, asserts the planet Nibiru (also known as Planet X) will crash into our own on September 23.

Although scientists deny the planet's existence, Meade is convinced he is right after finding Bible passages to support his claims.

Earlier this year Meade asserted that Nibiru would crash into Earth in October, however he has now moved the date forward a few weeks.

The Great American Eclipse - the total solar eclipse which will enshroud parts of the US in complete darkness on August 21- now apparently indicates the planet's arrival.

Where does the theory come from?

Despite a lack of evidence, David Meade - along with a number of other conspiracy theorists - claim Bible passages and the solar eclipse's existence support the idea that the end of times are nigh.

Meade told the Daily Star earlier this month: "The Great American Eclipse of August 21, 2017, is a major - huge - harbinger."

The conspiracy theorist points to warnings in the Old Testament book of Isaiah, Chapter 13, verses nine to 10, which read: "See, the Day of the Lord is coming - a cruel day, with wrath and fierce anger - to make the land desolate and destroy the sinners within it.

"The Stars of Heaven and their constellations will not show their light. The rising Sun will be darkened and the Moon will not give its light."

Meade says this passage is connected to what he has dubbed the "33 Convergence", where a string of coincidences all include the number 33.

"When the eclipse begins on August 21, the sunrise will be dark, just as Isaiah predicts," he says. "The Moon involved is called a black moon. These occur about every 33 months. In the Bible, the divine name of Elohim appears 33 times in Genesis.

He added: "The eclipse will start in Lincoln Beach, Oregon - the 33rd state - and end on the 33rd degree of Charleston, South Carolina. Such a solar eclipse has not occurred since 1918, which is 99 years - or 33 times three."

Thirty-three days after the US total solar eclipse - on September 23 - the stars will align just as the book of Revelation says they will before the world ends. This, Meade points out, "is indeed an amazing omen and a frightful sign".

Revelation's chapter 12 depicts a "great sign": that a "woman clothed with the sun, with the Moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head" will "give birth".

On September 23, Meade says, the Moon will appear at the feet of the constellation Virgo (a virgin woman). At the head of Virgo there will be 12 stars, the nine stars of Leo and the planets Mercury, Venus and Mars.

Virgo will then appear to give birth to Jupiter, apparently signalling the beginning of the end for us all.

What is Nibiru/Planet X?

Conspiracy theorists have been predicting for decades that Nibiru - also referred to as Planet X - is going to collide with Earth and destroy it. Fortunately for us, their doomsday predictions have never actually been right (so far).

An unseen planet debunked by Nasa, Nibiru was first mentioned in 1976 by Zecharia Sitchin in his cult book The 12th Planet. The mystery planet is apparently home to a race of ancient aliens called the Annunaki, whom Sitchin credited with creating the human race.

Nigel Watson, author of the UFO Investigations Manual, supports Sitchin's idea, explaining: "Nibiru collided with a planet called Tiamat that was situated between Mars and Jupiter. The result was the creation of the asteroid belt and planet Earth.

"Nibiru is populated by the Anunnaki, an advanced humanoid race, who visited Earth thousands of years ago to mine gold in Africa.

"As an outcome of needing workers to carry out these mining operations they used genetics to create Homo Sapiens."

The end of the world was also supposed to arrive on May 21, 2011, with Christian doomsday prophet Harold Camping predicting the Rapture would begin at 18.00 in each of the world's time zones, wiping out naysayers with rolling earthquakes as believers ascended to heaven.

The preacher refused to schedule any media interviews for the following day, saying: "There is no way that I can schedule an interview because I won't be here" - but this doomsday prediction wasn't his first.

He blamed an earlier apocalyptic prediction of his, which passed quietly in 1994, on a mathematical error, explaining: "I'm not embarrassed about it. It was just the fact that it was premature."

Nor is this the first Armageddon prophecy to focus on eclipses. Following four consecutive lunar eclipses at six-monthly intervals, in 2015 US pastor John Hagee claimed global destruction was nigh.

Awkwardly, this prediction contradicted fellow conspiracy theorist Chris McCann's claim that the world would end on October 7 2015 - thankfully, neither were correct.

What are scientists saying about the apocalypse?

Although Nasa hasn't responded to Meade's assertions about September 23, they did comment on 2012's apocalypse prediction.

Nasa said then in a statement on its website: "Nibiru and other stories about wayward planets are an internet hoax. There is no factual basis for these claims.

"If Nibiru or Planet X were real and headed for an encounter with the Earth in 2012, astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye. Obviously, it does not exist."

When questioned about 2015's potential apocalypse, the experts at Nasa eased our minds even more, saying: "As best as we can tell, no large object is likely to strike the Earth any time in the next several hundred years."

On 21 August, North America will experience its first total solar eclipse in decades. Precise maps and times for the event are readily available, detailed down to the second and meter. The nationwide anticipation of this phenomenon is testament to our precise understanding of the necessary celestial mechanics to so perfectly predict this event.

More complex aspects of astronomy and biology, however, have not yet succumbed to human understanding. In his ambitious book Life Through Time and Space, Wallace Arthur tackles an extraordinarily difficult set of topics. What is the origin and fate of the universe? How did life, and eventually intelligent life, come into existence on Earth? How does a fertilized human egg transform into a complex person with only DNA to guide development?
The book is organized in “triplets,” as Arthur calls them in the preface: The first is on astronomy or astrobiology, the next on evolution, and the final one focuses on embryology. Should a reader find any particular chapter less than interesting, it is a short wait before the topic shifts.

Arthur does an excellent job in the astronomy-focused chapters. There is a concise and effective explanation of our modern understanding of the origin of the universe—a play-by-play of fractions of a second. Although it is sometimes glossed over in accounts of the Big Bang, Arthur rightly notes that the early universe contained both matter and antimatter and that these two forms of matter annihilated each other into photons when they were brought together. Arthur also points out the fortuitous fact that there was slightly more matter than antimatter in the early universe; without this asymmetry, the universe would be pure energy—no stars, no planets, and certainly no life. His breadth of coverage extends to exoplanets discovered by the Kepler space telescope and the likelihood of alien intelligent life.

Insights derived from early embryonic development may shed light on the origins of extraterrestrial life, argues Arthur.

In the section on biology and evolution, I particularly enjoyed Arthur’s treatment of the evolution and origin of animal life. Here, he uses a metaphor of trees rising from the sea to describe the different branches of evolution that led to the many forms of life on Earth today. One such tree produced animal life, another plant life, and still others led to funguses and brown seaweeds.

The same chapter discusses the mystery of the “Cambrian explosion,” which I had before believed to be a burst of evolution and new species. Arthur reveals, however, that it also may have been just an epoch of intense fossilization.

Arthur’s field of study is embryology (in particular, evolutionary developmental biology), but I found these sections the hardest to follow or appreciate. The idea that a single fertilized egg can develop first into a fetus, then into an infant, and eventually into a fully grown adult human capable of thinking and understanding the world is truly a marvel. However, I am not sure I understand the mechanisms that drive and make possible human development any more than I did when I started the book, even if I know much more about what happens and in what order.

Cosmologists often wrestle with understanding the early universe because the most we can observe are photons from billions of years ago. But, as Arthur reveals, despite having direct access to their subjects, biologists often struggle to make sense of their chosen topics, too. Both of these complex sciences represent huge challenges. Arthur writes, “Maybe a close cousin of the chimpanzee … shouldn’t expect to be able to understand the origins of everything. … [B]ut that won’t stop us from trying.”

In the book’s closing chapters, Arthur pivots to broad concerns about humanity’s ultimate undoing, be it at our own hands or from an external cause. No species has ever survived anything close to 4 billion years on Earth—the expected remaining lifetime of our Sun—and extinction, he notes, has been the most common fate. Here, he writes passionately and strongly against religious fundamentalism, both past and present, that suppresses truth-based inquiry.

Although promising a lack of jargon up front, Arthur allows plenty to seep in. One cannot discuss the intricacies of the brain, for example without using the word “axon,” but phrases such as “temporal topography of development” could surely have been written more simply.

By the end, readers will have learned a great deal about three very complex and important subjects. However, those without a biology background may find themselves struggling through certain chapters at times. Still, overall, Arthur writes clearly about many complex and varied subjects, and his enthusiasm for the material shows.

Every discovery we make about the universe has implications for us. Understanding how our solar system formed, and how we got here, helps us figure out how likely it is that we'll find life on other planets. Even just our corner of the galaxy is vast; anything we can do to help narrow the possibilities of where we can and should search for life beyond our planet is helpful. And that's why a new study from Rutgers and MIT is so interesting. A team discovered that the moon's magnetic field survived much longer than previously thought.

The Earth's magnetic field is what protects us from space radiation. Some comes from outside our galaxy, but our sun also emits highly charged particles that would be incredibly harmful if we weren't protected from them. (That's one of the serious concerns about sending astronauts to Marsand beyond: How do we protect them from radiation when they're outside the protection of the Earth's magnetic field?) As far as scientists know, a magnetic field is a key ingredient in finding life on another planet, but they were under the impression that a body as small as the moon wouldn't be able to support one for very long. This new study may prove that theory wrong.

In order to conduct their experiments, the team used moon rocks that were collected by astronauts on Apollo 15. Objects lose their magnetism when exposed to extreme heat, so Sonia Tikoo, the lead author of the article published in Science Advances, heated the lunar rock to 1,436 degrees F and demagnetized it. She was then able to determine what its original magnetization was; it was higher than expected.

Scientists have dated the lunar rock to between 1 billion and 2.5 billion years old. This means that the moon's magnetic field, which was once as strong as the Earth's, lasted a lot longer than scientists thought. It was still active as of 2ish billion years ago. The moon currently has no magnetic field, but scientists are unclear as to when it shut down. In comparison, Mars lost the bulk of its magnetic field about 4 billion years ago.

Not only did we just find out more about our satellite, but this study tells us that we possibly should be looking at exomoons as potential hosts for life, in addition to exoplanets. "The question becomes what size planets and moons should we be considering as possibly habitable worlds," said Tikoo. The answer is clear: We have a lot more work to do.

Planet 10? New ‘Earth-size alien world’ found in our Solar System

A NEW alien planet a similar size to Earth has been discovered in our Solar System, according to space boffins.

Only a heavenly body the size of Mars or bigger would have enough mass to alter the orbits of other objects in the Kuiper Belt, researchers at the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory say.

Research fellow Kat Volk, of LPL – whose study will be published in The Astronomical Journal – said: “The most likely explanation for our results is that there is some unseen mass.

“According to our calculations, something as massive as Mars would be needed to cause the warp that we measured."

The LPL team are sure their calculations point to a new planet – not Planet 9.

Planet 9 – which was also discovered through its effects on objects in the Kuiper Belt – is thought to be four times the size of Earth and 10 times its mass.

Space experts have told Daily Star Online they think Planet 9 could be in the region of the constellation Orion.

It is believed to be about 500 to 700 “astronomical units” from Earth – up to 65 trillion miles away.

Whatever is affecting the Kuiper Belt objects the researchers have spotted is much nearer.

Ms Volk said: “[Planet 9] is too far away to influence these Kuiper Belt objects.

"It certainly has to be much closer than 100 AU to substantially affect the KBOs in that range."

The team hope a new telescope being built in Chile, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, may help them check out more objects in the Kuiper Belt, including the possible Planet 10.

Visitors from across the world crop up at new circle

THE overwhelming response to a crop circle's sudden appearance in a Hannington farm has caused headaches for the farm's managers.

The mysterious phenomenon cropped up last week and Shelley Klindt was shocked to discover it on Friday morning.

She briefly opened the field to visitors after pictures of the pattern taken by drones went viral.

Shelley urged sightseers to stay near the tram lines and not trample the crops but decided to stop people visiting the site when onlookers caused more damage.

She said: “I noticed that the gate to the field was open and when I went to close it, I saw that a lot of the wheat had been pressed down, it must have happened overnight.

“When I noticed the crop circle, a man was standing nearby with a drone and he showed me pictures of it from above.

“I tried to keep this quiet but the pictures went online and people started turning up."

Crowds of people from all over the world quickly gathered at the site to witness the weird wheat markings.

Shelley added: “It’s quite a pretty thing, people from Brazil, Canada and America all came to have a look, though you can’t really see it from the ground.

“I think it’s man-made but everyone else seems to think it’s spiritual or aliens or something.”

Mrs Klindt doesn’t own the farm but her husband’s family has been looking after it since the 1970s.

They have never had a crop circle appear in the fields before but claimed that one appeared in a neighbour’s fields in 2012.

Shelley added: “It’s a hassle, we were 10 days from combining the crops and now all the wheat that’s been pushed to the floor can’t be harvested, it’s ruined.

“We will have to claim this on our insurance which will make our insurance costs go up.

“The tram lines are 24 metres apart and it goes across three of them, that’s a lot of unusable wheat.”

The pattern will be gone in a few days when the combine harvesting begins.

Mooie zonnige zomeravonden hebben het voordeel dat het soms heel helder is. En dan vooral bijvoorbeeld ’s avonds laat als de chemtrails enigszins zijn gestopt en weggetrokken. 

Dat was ook het moment dat enkele dagen geleden, op 7 augustus, een inwoner van Californië begon met het nemen van foto’s van de volle maan. 

Naast de volle maan fotografeerde hij ook nog een enorm groot zwart object.

Hij bleef foto’s maken van dit vreemd bewegende object.

Zoals op de volgende afbeelding te zien, is het object in kwestie, vergeleken met de maan, enorm groot.

Op een gegeven moment was er zelfs sprake van een tweede object.

Zo te zien verdwijnt dit grote object naar de voor ons onzichtbare achterkant van de maan, waar zich ongetwijfeld de nodige (buitenaardse) bases zullen bevinden. 

Iemand die zich de laatste weken ook intensief bezighoudt met de maan is de bij ons bekende Youtube gebruiker Streetcap1.

Massive Wave Anomalies Caught Coming from Antarctica Mystery Ross Sea Base?

Yet again, MIMIC Map catches massive anomalies coming from Antarctica. This time we have two different events caught in the recent frames. The biggest being another massive wave formation that is once again being shot out above the Pacific Ocean.

As the MIMIC map showed this time two anomalies, I have tried to determine the source on Antarctica and it seems that the location must be in or close the Ross Sea.

The rough estimate and interpretation of the location of the source could be of course totally wrong, but if you see the images below then the anomalies point to a location in or next to the Ross Sea.

Now, the Scott Base a New Zealand Antarctic international research facility which is located at Pram Point on Ross Island which is close to the Ross Sea and while it doesn’t prove anything it is interesting to note that this base is in line with the supposed location from where the wave anomalies have been transmitted.

The Ross Sea and the mysterious surroundings seem to be an important part of the Antarctic given the fact that besides the activities of the International Scott Base, a few months ago, the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources decided that the 1.9 million square-mile Ross Sea will be the new marine protected area.

Despite the Ross Sea is now a protected area, China has selected a location for its first-ever airfield in Antarctica, which is to facilitate Beijing’s research efforts on the frozen continent, moreover, China is considering establishing a new Ross Sea base.

That China wants to establish a new base just in this new protected area, actually in the same area where the International Scott base is located, is interesting and it could only means, whether or not related to the strange wave anomalies, that there is something going on below the surface of the Ross Sea or in the surrounding area that has the highest attention of many governments throughout the world.

BAALBEK MEGALITH: MYTHS ABOUT THE LARGEST 'MAN MADE' STONE ON EARTH

Two thousand years ago, in the city of Heliopolis, or Baalbek, Lebanon as it is called now, a temple to the deity Jupiter was erected atop three enormous stone blocks each weighing more than one thousand tons. An imperfect stone of similar dimensions was located in a nearby quarry where the blocks are believed to have been excavated and formed. A few years ago yet another was found in the quarry; it is considered to be the largest of its kind ever discovered.

MASSIVE MEGALITH BLOCK REIGNITES ANCIENT MYSTERY

The mystery behind these enormous ancient constructions is twofold. Notable historians and archaeologists have been unable to find any evidence or clues to point them towards who may have ordered the Temple of Jupiter to be built. For more than a century, experts have failed to shed light on the origin of the temple, which is believed to be constructed by Romans and likely for religious reasons, but no specific person or group can be determined.

" There are many local legends about the origin of the temple: Cain built it to hide from the wrath of God; giants built it, at Nimrod’s command, and it came to be called the Tower of Babel; Solomon built it, with djinns’ assistance, as a palace for the Queen of Sheba. (It is said that the reason some blocks were left in the quarry is that the djinns went on strike.) "

This is noteworthy due to the enormity of the project- the labor and expense would be by no means minor. Unfortunately, no concrete information has been discovered on this or on what experts call the Trilithon, the ancient blocks. The blocks themselves are much more interesting a find given the technological deficiencies of the age. In modern times, it would still require some feat to move stones as heavy and large as these, and that is with the benefit of two thousand years of technological advancement. The primitive cranes and rolling devices of the day would not be sufficient to transport these blocks to their destination. It is an engineering accomplishment worthy of investigation.

BIBLICAL, MYTHOLOGICAL OR EXTRATERRESTRIAL?

Unfortunately, as the new stone was discovered during a quiet period in the Syrian war and with hostilities still ongoing, the mystery will have to wait until it is safe to continue excavating. What remains is speculation. There is already mythological and biblical explanations surrounding the stones and even extra-terrestrial ones. The Trilithon may precede the temple as the age of the stones, and the quarry itself is under debate. A landing platform for a spacecraft might require such a structure.

THE BALTIC SEA ANOMALY: MYSTERY SOLVED

In April 2011, a group of Swedish cazatesoros called ‘Ocean X’, led by Peter Lindberg, announced with fanfare the discovery of a strange and huge object at the bottom of the Baltic Sea.(Baltic Sea Anomaly)

End of the puzzle

Immediately the speculations began, from an old Nazi experiment to the remains of Atlantis or, better still, an extraterrestrial star ship there who knows when. Be that as it may, the object was called “the anomaly of the Baltic” and since then Lindberg has done everything possible to echo it and to raise funds for new expeditions. At the same time, of course, he was collecting headlines around the world and enormous publicity for his company.
Volker Brüchert, after analyzing the data collected by the treasure hunter, who did not want to comment on it, said that it is actually a rock formation dragged by glaciers into the deep waters a few thousand years ago,

Brüchert argued on the show that the treasure hunter gave him: “I came across a black mineral that could be a volcanic rock. My hypothesis is that this object, this great structure, was formed during the Ice Age many thousands of years ago.

It is good that there are critics voices about this supposed mystery of the Baltic Sea, “and adds:” What Ocean X’s team completely ignored is that most of the samples they took from the bottom of the sea were granite, gneiss The same composition as granite) and sandstone. ”

And this, according to the scientist, is exactly what we would expect to see in a glacial basin. The entire Baltic Sea is a large glacial basin, a region excavated by ice thousands and thousands of years ago.

2. Mars Has Methane In Its Atmosphere

In 2014, the Curiosity Rover discovered ‘burps’ of methane, which Nasa scientists said at the time could indicate “life or evidence of ancient methane trapped which could show ancient life”. Methane can be interpreted as a sign of biological activity — microbes emit it — or even of geologic activity. And active planets, it is thought, are more likely to have life on them.

But, some poor telescope optics of Lowell’s day quashed his observations. Thus, the channels he saw were nothing but optical illusions.

That said, several spacecraft have spotted other signs of ancient water — channels grooved in the terrain and rocks that only could have formed in the presence of water.

5. Mars Has Frozen Water Today

Simply put, water implies habitability. So, life as we know it is more likely to exist with water there. Mars has a thin atmosphere that does not allow water to flow or remain in large quantities on the surface. In the other side, we know for sure that there is ice at the poles and possibly frosty locations elsewhere on the planet. The question is if the ice is capable of melting enough water in the summer long enough to support any microbes.

In the past, the planet has been hit by large asteroids, just like Earth. Most of the debris fell back on the planet, but some of it was ejected into space. That sparked an incredible journey where the debris moved around the Solar System and in some cases, landed on Earth.

Earth makes a faster orbit around the sun because it’s closer to it. Meanwhile, Mars is much farther, thus having a longer revolution around our Star. A Martian year is the equivalent of 687 Earth days –while a day on the Red Planet only lasts 40 minutes more than one on Earth.

9. Mars Used To Have A Thicker Atmosphere

It is thought that the Sun’s energy striking the atmosphere must have “stripped” the lighter forms of hydrogen from the top, scattering the molecules into space. Over long periods of time, this would lessen the amount of atmosphere near Mars.

10. Humans on Mars

Nasa is planning to create an ‘Earth Independent’ Mars colony by the 2030s.

“Like the Apollo programme, we embark on this journey for all humanity,” said Nasa. “Unlike Apollo, we will be going to stay.

Geert Creyne het licht was zo gelijk een flare dat vliegtuigen kunnen uitgooien en die oplichten, maar zoals je kan zien, is het geen vliegtuig... er gebeuren hier rare dingen, niet ver van een militaire luchthaven.

Rare 'pink rainbow' spotted in sky over Bristol

A rare "pink rainbow" was spotted in the west of England on Monday evening.

The phenomenon, seen in Bristol, Taunton and Yate, has been described as an "optical illusion" by experts.

People who photographed it described it as "amazing" and "pretty" on BBC Points West's Facebook page .

BBC Weather presenter Simon King said there was no specific name for the phenomenon, which was caused by a regular rainbow and a pink sunset happening at the same time.

"We've got a regular rainbow, which is caused by water droplets in the atmosphere reflecting the sunlight into the spectrum of different colours," he said.

"The other thing is a pinkish sunset caused by sunlight having to pass through a lot more atmosphere - due to the low sun angle late in the day - hence the shortwave colours - violets, blues, greens - are diminished and we only see the pinks and reds, giving the rainbow a pinkish colour."

Maak kennis met de North North Temperate Little Red Spot 1 (NN-LRS-1 voor intimi).

De storm wordt sinds 1993 in de gaten gehouden, maar is waarschijnlijk nog veel ouder. Het is een hogedrukgebied: het op twee na grootste dat Jupiter rijk is en doorgaans ongeveer 6000 kilometer lang.

De kleur van dit hogedrukgebied varieert tussen rood en beige. Op dit moment is het hogedrukgebied wit van kleur. Maar deze foto – gemaakt door ruimtesonde Juno – onthult dat het hart van de storm nog steeds roodkleurig is.

Juno maakte de foto op 10 juli toen deze voor de zevende keer langs Jupiter scheerde. Op het moment dat de foto gemaakt werd, was de sonde zo’n 11.444 kilometer van de wolkentoppen van Jupiter verwijderd. De foto is bewerkt door Gerald Eichstädt en Seán Doran. Zo is de foto iets gedraaid: bovenaan zien we de gebieden nabij de evenaar, terwijl onderaan de gebieden nabij de noordpool pronken.

Ruimtesonde Juno cirkelt alweer een jaar rond Jupiter en doet onder meer onderzoek naar het magnetisch veld en de kern van Jupiter. Ook zoekt de sonde uit hoeveel water er in de atmosfeer van Jupiter zit. Daarnaast heeft Juno al heel wat mooie kiekjes van de aarde gestuurd. Zo konden we dankzij de sonde vorig jaar voor het eerst een blik werpen op de noordpool van Jupiter.

En wat dacht je van deze bewerkte foto? Hier zie je Jupiters Grote Rode Vlek zoals mensenogen die zouden waarnemen als we ons in de baan van Juno zouden bevinden.

UFOs Join At Air Show In Washington State

Skyfest this past weekend lured several dozens of people, and at least one of them recorded a video of what he believed a UFO. John Whichelow said that he never captured anything like it ever. The air show at Fairchild AFB involved the Thunderbirds and Whichelow thought he was just recording them at first, but when he watched the video again, he noticed two different UFOs in the frame.

Whichelow said that the UFOs were likely moving incredibly fast as they appeared when the announcer said that those jets were going 500 mph. According to the amateur videographer, some suggested that they could be meteors, birds or bugs close to the camera. However, he does not think it is any of those.

The video shows a mysterious white object passes across the frame before the Thunderbirds pass each other. At around 36 seconds later, a smaller black object appears following behind the ascending Thunderbird.

Whichelow believes what Carl Sagan had stated saying that there are more stars in the universe than grains of sand on the beach. With stars that many, Whichelow believes many are older than ours and humanity will get to the stars someday. Whichelow further explains that the possibility that someone has gotten here already from the older stars makes a lot of sense.

Researchers Document Large UFO in Squamish On Video

A giant orb that was captured on video near the Stawamus Chief excites London, Ontario documentary and research crew Rob Freeman and Marcus McNabb. The pair has travelled to 30 cities and 11 countries in the past three years with a determination to document what is out there after being inspired by experiences during their childhood years.

The sighting is the best they got on video to date, according to Freeman, who is a senior field researcher for the scientific study of atmospheric anomalies. Freeman added that the happenings in the world are not known to many people.

The crew used night imaging technology for collecting data to see the visible and invisible. On July 22, the pair arrived in Squamish. An unnamed man at the Britannia Mine gift shop shared them a story on unusual things on the Chief trail.

When the night came, the duo entered the forest and soon after they reportedly saw a large sphere of light moving across the sky and descending into the woods.

The UFO has no sound, and they were certain it was not a plane.

While the sighting was just short, Freeman was able to record the thing. Freeman explained that the orb was in front of the trees because the trees behind the orb were all lit up.

NASA generated headlines with its recent job posting for someone in its Office of Safety and Mission Assurance for Planetary Protection – and spurred the most brilliant cover letter ever:

Dear NASA,
My name is Jack Davis and I would like to apply for the for the planetary protection officer job. I may be 9, but I think I would be fit for the job. One of the reasons is my sister says I am an alien. Also I have seen almost all the space and alien movies that I can see. I have also seen the show ‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and hope to see the movie ‘Men in Black.’ I am great at video games. I am young, so I can learn to think like an alien.

The NASA post seeks someone to protect Mother Earth when space exploration missions go into the final frontier.

“NASA maintains policies for planetary protection applicable to all space flight missions that may intentionally or unintentionally carry Earth organisms and organic constituents to the planets or other solar system bodies, and any mission employing spacecraft, which are intended to return to Earth and its biosphere with samples from extraterrestrial targets of exploration,” the job post reads.

It pays up to $187,000. Here’s the job listing.

The position has been around for decades but recently went into orbit, pardon the pun, no doubt thanks to the word “extraterrestrial” in the job description. The ensuing buzz may explain why the precocious youngster from New Jersey decided to set his sights on the gig.

Dr. James L. Green, director of NASA’s planetary science division, took the time to respond:

“We are always looking for bright future scientists and engineers to help us, so I hope you will study hard and do well in school,” it read. “We hope to see you here at NASA one of these days!”

Green also worked in a little clarification about the job: “Our planetary protection officer position is really cool and is very important work. It’s about protecting Earth from tiny microbes when we bring back samples from the Moon, asteroids and Mars. It’s also about protecting other planets and moons from our germs as we responsibly explore the Solar System.”
