Mysterious Stone Found in Egypt Contains Exotic Alien Compounds

A pebble found in a field of Libyan desert glass in southwest Egypt has proven to be quite a mystery, and may even shake up our very understanding of the history of our solar system. The pebble is known as the Hypatia Stone, named after 4th century Greek philosopher and mathematician Hypatia who is remembered as being one of the first notable female mathematicians. The pebble appears unremarkable on the surface, measuring just a few centimeters across and dark grey in color. What makes the pebble unique is its chemical composition, one that is unlike any other known substance on Earth or in space. Where did the Hypatia stone come from?

Fragments of the pebble.

Fragments of the pebble.

Most planets and known meteorites contain silicate minerals and a small amount of carbon, but the Hypatia pebble has been found to have a nearly opposite composition of mostly carbon with very little silicon. Even stranger, the pebble contains a high amount of polyaromatic hydrocarbons, a major component of interstellar dust which existed before our own solar system formed. Georgy Belyanin, a geologist at the University of Johannesburg and one of the authors of the study of the hypatia stone, says this unique composition may date it to before the birth of our own Sun and place its origin outside of our own solar system:

In the grains within Hypatia the ratios of these three elements to each other are completely different from that calculated for the planet Earth or measured in known types of meteorites. As such these inclusions are unique within our solar system. We think the nickel-phosphorus-iron grains formed pre-solar, because they are inside the matrix, and are unlikely to have been modified by shock such as collision with the Earth’s atmosphere or surface, and also because their composition is so alien to our solar system.

If confirmed, that would make it the only own fragment from this period of the universe’s history. It’s still unknown from where the pebble originated, however. There is a chance it could have originated in a comet or meteorite from the far edges of our solar system, but since we haven’t been able study those objects, scientists are still unsure of their compositions. Furthermore, if it came from our solar system, it would challenge our entire understanding of how our solar system formed. Pretty impressive for a pebble.

Footage of Bright UFO Leaving the Moon

Footage of Bright UFO Leaving the Moon

On January 1, 2018, Matt Beland was working all day and finally he went on his break to smoke. Stared to take a picture of the moon he saw something was going on so he flipped the video on and started to record.

bright%2Bufo%2Bmoon.jpg

After viewing the video it looks like a bright UFO coming out or leaving the moon till it disappears.

According to Matt, who has filmed the object from an unknown location, he has seen the exact same thing several times before next to the moon.

Alien Ship Discovered On the Moon

Alien Ship Discovered On the Moon

UFO-moon

A YouTube video titled “Alien Ship on the Lunar Surface” depicts a sizeable strange object on the lunar surface. UFO and alien researcher Streetcap1 claims he got pictures of the mysterious object from the Chinese Chang’e 3 lunar rover, which was launched in 2013.

Streetcap1 says that he does not know what else it could be and encourage the viewers to look at the detail.
He claims that no colour or brightness adjustments have been made on the photos at all. He stresses that it is precisely how it looks on the Chinese Chang’e 3 photographs.

The video has received mix comments and got thousands of views.

Some say the photos are spectacular and that they are fantastic finds. Others suggest that alien ship or not, it is something that should not be ignored.

Others have accused the uploader as a hoaxer and that the footage is fake.

A day after the video was uploaded, he uploaded another footage revealing that suspicious viewers bombarded him. He claimed to have been getting a lot of hassle from non-believers and trolls on his last video.

He insisted that no point of uploading fake rubbish unless you’re in it for money. He explained he is in it for the Kudos, which he considered worth a lot more than money.

He added that he is proud of his work and it makes him angry when people accused his channel fake.

Is alien PROOF hidden in new batch of British UFO files which have finally been released?

Is alien PROOF hidden in new batch of British UFO files which have finally been released?

A FINAL batch of the British "real life X Files" have been released by the Government after a decade long battle by UFO hunters.

The declassification of the final three documents among a series of reports dating from the 1970s brings to an end a 10-year campaign for transparency by ufologists.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) papers have been trickled out over a series of releases to the National Archives, with many delays along the way.

There are still complaints that they have been made deliberately hard to access, as they are not available online, and require a visit to the National Archives in London to pour through hard copies.

The papers include UFO witness accounts, photos and sketches of mystery objects, and MoD and official reports of sightings.

However, so far there does not appear to be the smoking gun evidence of alien life so-called truth seekers were hoping for.

UFO DISCLOSURE: Nick Pope has welcomed the release of the last batch of British X-Files.

RELATED ARTICLES

Coming so soon after the revelations about the Pentagon's UFO program, this will raise suspicion in the UFO community that there's been co-ordination between the US and UK government on this.

Nick Pope

Nick Pope, former UFO investigator at the MoD, has suggested that alien enthusiasts won't be too chuffed with this final release.

The last three documents all date from 1986, and were released on New Year’s Day.

Mr Pope said: "This looks suspiciously as if The National Archives tried to sneak out this release when nobody was looking."

The timing of the release, just weeks after the US Pentagon confirmed it had maintained a top-secret UFO investigation program, has also raised suspicions.

Mr Pope added: "Coming so soon after the revelations about the Pentagon's UFO program, this will raise suspicion in the UFO community that there's been co-ordination between the US and UK government on this."

RELATED ARTICLES

However, he is glad they are finally out.

He added: "Having worked on the MoD's UFO investigations in the 90s I'm pleased that these files are finally in the open.

"There's no smoking gun in these files that says UFOs are extraterrestrial, but there are plenty of interesting sighting reports and other related material relating to MoD research on the subject.

"These recent revelations in the UK and the US show that whatever you believe about the UFO mystery, some of us in government took the subject seriously.

"I hope this means that the media, the scientific community and the public can now have a more serious and informed debate about the UFO phenomenon, with less sarcastic comments about little green men."

Rh Negative Blood: An Alien Origin or a Rare Mutation?

Rh Negative Blood: An Alien Origin or a Rare Mutation?

Rh negative blood type

Being of the Rhesus monkey lineage, around 85 % of the world population inherits the Rh positive blood group. The remaining 10-15 % is Rh negative pointing out their origin being from a different source.

This difference in blood type has attracted various conspiracy theories – linking them to reptilian blood in one and to an alien origin in another.

Our immune system responds to any foreign substance by generating antibodies. The triggering up of these antibodies is a function of antigens. One such important antigen found in Rh positive blood type is the D antigen. The absence of this antigen indicates a person having a Rh negative blood type.

Apart from a difference in certain traits and characteristics, they live a normal life.  In fact,  as this blood type lacks proteins, it provides them immunity against certain diseases which require proteins as a carrier.

Traits and characteristics

  • Empathetic
  • Reddish hair
  • Green, blue or hazel eyes
  • Intuitive
  • Always look for facts
  • Higher than average IQ
  • Easily Scared
  • Lower body temperature
  • Sense of purpose in life
  • Compassionate
  • Unexplained psychic dreams
  • Interest in space and science
  • Extra vertebrate
  • An inclination to healing professions
  • A feeling of being different

Mothers immune system rejects the fetus

This blood type becomes a cause of concern only during the pregnancy when a Rh negative mother carries a fetus having the Rh-positive blood type.

When the blood of mother comes in contact with that of the fetus blood, it develops antibodies against the Rh D antigen. The mother’s immune system can then prove fatal for the fetus.

But with the advancement in medical science, medications are now available to prevent the fetus from such harm.

Some believe that the evolution of Rh negative blood came about when aliens mated with humans.

As these people are blessed with psychic and intuitive powers, did the aliens desired to create a lineage separate from rest of the humanity?  or did they wanted them to act as angels and prevent humanity at the time of need?

Some of the strange things common to the people having this bloodline are

  • They are doing research on ancient astronauts
  • Author of the books based on extraterrestrials, space, and science
  • Are alien abductees

It is no denying the fact that our history has also pointed to alien visitations. These indications come preserved in the form of scriptures, stone carvings, and paintings.

Some examples include

  • Ancient cave paintings
  • UFO sightings
  • Crop circles
  • The uncanny architectures such as the pyramids of Giza, Nasca lines, stone henge etc

Did the ancient astronauts come here with a purpose?

Various texts have even pointed out that gods came and blessed humans with their sons. Can Rh negative blood type come into existence due to one such blessing?

One of the professors even said that we all as a race came from space.

Prof Wickramasinghe mathematician, astronomer, and astrobiologist said

“ A dark secret lies deeply buried in our DNA. We are all aliens made up of cosmic genes from cosmic bacteria and viruses that drifted down to us in comet dust and meteorites through the depths of space”.

The largest percentage of this bloodline are the Basque people who live near the Pyrenees mountain between France and Spain. They are semi-isolated from the rest of Europe

According to the University of Nevada, center for basques studies

No one knows exactly where the Basques came from. Some say they have lived in that area since Cro-Magnon man first roamed Europe. Estimates of how long they have lived there vary from 10,000 to 75,000 years. Some say they are descended from the original Iberians. More fanciful theories exist, as well. One is that the Basques are the descendants of the survivors of Atlantis.

Scientific explanation

Let us now understand how science tries to clarify this conspiracy.

According to this website, our DNA decides our body characteristics. With a slight change in DNA, our characteristics also change.

These DNA changes can take place either when a cell divides or through outside influences such as radiation.

Mutation, as we know, is the change in the DNA or genome of an individual. Rh negative blood type having no D antigen evolved due to one such mutation. This also changed their appearance and immune system characteristics.

rh factor

What a Rh-negative mothers immune system is doing is activating its defense system obeying its DNA characteristics.

One of the inherent benefit they have over other individuals is their immunity against the parasite Toxoplasma. Also, as this bloodline is prominent in places having this parasite, it is indicative of a rare mutation took place which aided the people having this mutation to cope well.

As people in Europe account for the maximum percentage having this blood type, maybe this served them to survive in that geography.

CONCLUSION

Whether the Rh negative blood type is of alien origin or a rare genetic mutation, weighs equal. It can be concluded only after science gives us, even more, facts to remove the veil out of its very origin.

If it is only a result of genetic mutation then why does it makes such people more intuitive, psychic healers, being the popular target of aliens,  science and space explorers? There are a lot of questions which need to be answered to reach a definite conclusion.

Who knows that the theory of alien mating with humans turns out to be true when science has sufficient data to back up the claims or it turns out to be our random assumption with the concept of genetic mutation winning in the end.

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIxzvtmF0t4

What was that bright flash over Russia?

What was that bright flash over Russia?

A flash seen over a wide swath of Russia on January 7 at first caused fears of a U.S. air strike on North Korea. For now, the flash is unexplained.

Bright flash in the night sky over the Tatarstan region of Russia on January 7, 2018, via Siberian Times.

Siberian Times and other media reported this week (January 9, 2018) on an exceedingly bright flash that “turned night to day” over a wide swath of western Russia on Sunday, January 7. Some media reported that the flash caused speculationabout a U.S. air strike over North Korea. A next logical assumption might be a meteor, but – as of this writing – there are no reports about the event in the meteor logs for both the International Meteor Organization and the American Meteor Society, suggesting no bright streak of a meteor was seen.

The flash was seen primarily over three regions Bashkortostan, Udmurtia, and Tatarstan.

Siberian Times reported:

The black sky suddenly turned momentarily deep blue as if on a bright day – but according to some accounts, the Earth moved too.

Experts insist the phenomenon was not manmade: there were no reports of missile tests or explosions.

Nor were there reports of meteorites striking the Earth.

Witnesses had the feeling something massive had happened – but what?

Looking back, I noticed a story about a similar bright flash over Russia in 2014. In that story, an IFLScience reportconcluded:

It’s definitely possible that the light wasn’t originating in the sky; it came from the ground and was being reflected off of the clouds.

Other explanations include “dry thunderstorms” to “atmospheric electricity.”

The sky over Tatarstan during the mysterious explosion of light, via Siberian Times.

Bottom line: A flash seen over a wide swath of Russia on January 7, 2018 is so far unexplained.

What is a sun pillar, or light pillar?

What is a sun pillar, or light pillar?

Sun pillars, or light pillars, are shafts of light extending from the sun or other bright light source. They’re caused by ice crystals drifting in Earth’s air.

Canada geese look like ghosts as they fly though a sun pillar – January 28, 2017 – in Quakertown, Pennsylvania.

EarthSky Facebook friends occasionally post beautiful photos of sun pillars, or light pillars. For example, there was a beautiful one seen from the U.S. West Coast on March 20, 2016 … a beautiful prelude to the first full night of spring. Sun pillars are vertical shafts of light that extend upward (or downward) from a bright light source, such as the sun or other bright light low on the horizon. They can be five to 10 degrees tall and sometimes even higher. They might lengthen or brighten as you gaze at them.

They’re beautiful and wondrous. They’re also the source of some UFO reports!

Joe C. Tabb and his wife caught this amazing sun pillar at sunset on May 10, 2016. A storm had recently passed.

Sun pillars or light pillars are formed by reflection from hexagonal plate-like ice crystals in Earth’s air. These crystals drift through the atmosphere with a horizontal orientation, gently rocking from side to side as they fall. Diagram via University of Illinois.

Sun pillars or light pillars form when sunlight (or another bright light source) reflects off the surfaces of millions of falling ice crystals associated with thin, high-level clouds, for example, cirrostratus clouds. The ice crystals have roughly horizontal faces. They are falling through Earth’s atmosphere, rocking slightly from side to side.

When is the best time to see a sun pillar or light pillar?

You’ll most often see sun pillars when the sun is low in the western sky before sunset, or low in the east just after the breaking of dawn. You might even see a sun pillar when the sun is below the horizon. Light pillars can be seen at any time of night.

They’re called sun pillars when the sun helps make them. But this the moon or even streetlights can create this light phenomenon, too, in which case the name light pillar is more appropriate.

These pillars of light often prompt people to report sightings of UFOs. They can sometimes look strange! There are said to be a lot of UFO reports caused by light pillars over Niagara Falls, where the mist from the rush of descending water interacts with the city’s many upward facing spotlights. Light pillars do appear frequently over Niagara Falls, especially during the winter.

As always, the great website Atmospheric Optics is a wonderful place to go and learn more about sun pillars.

Alien Invasion: What Would Aliens REALLY Want With The Earth?

UFO-02-800x445.jpg

Alien Invasion: What Would Aliens REALLY Want With The Earth?

Let’s put aside the questions as to whether or not we’ve been visited by aliens. Let’s ask a better question: Why would aliens visit us at all? Is there anything about Earth that makes us prone to an alien invasion?

alien invasion earth

An Alien Invasion has Occurred, But For What Reason?

While there’s plenty of talk of human-alien hybridization programs & plans to take over our government and make us slaves, do these ideas make any sense? I mean, if a far advanced alien race came here with the intent of making us slaves, they wouldn’t need to infiltrate our government to do so. They’d just… do it. They would just do it because they’re so advanced relative to us. So let’s explore the possibilities…

The Most Unlikely Scenarios for an Alien Invasion

The first 2 scenarios really have good reasons why they’re unlikely. While they’re popular with hardcore alien enthusiasts, many of which believe these things are happening now or have in the past, a step back to reality doesn’t support these ideas. The likely scenarios are much more insidious and dire for humans in the event of a true alien invasion.

#1. Gold Mining

Gold is a very rare metal. For thousands of years, humans have mined it. We work for it. We kill for it. Aliens want gold too.

The idea is a cornerstone for Ancient Alien theorists. They believe that aliens came to the earth in ancient times to mine gold. In their desire for gold, they genetically modified ancient apes to make them more intelligent. The theory states that modern-day humans, us, are those genetically modified apes. Aliens designed us to have love and desire for gold so that we would mine it for them by our own ‘choice’.

Gold Jewelry

The Argument for an Alien Gold Mining Operation

Truth be told, there isn’t much evidence in support of this theory. Everyone who reads this blog knows my stance on the Ancient Alien religion. It’s undeniable that humans have a love and obsession with gold. We also have a love and obsession with lots of pretty stones and shiny metals that aren’t gold.

The Reality – Gold isn’t THAT Rare

While gold is a rare metal by certain standards, there’s no reason to think Earth has more gold than other rocky planets. Gold can only be created during a supernova and any planets forming in the resulting cloud of heavy elements will have some gold on them. So does it really make sense that aliens would travel here specifically for gold? Probably not. The fact of the matter is that from the perspective of an interstellar species, gold isn’t that rare or hard to find.

Alien technology would be so great, they wouldn’t need human ‘slaves’ to mine gold for them. They’d have machines that can do it much faster. Additionally, there’s no reason why they would choose an inhabited planet to mine when there are so many uninhabited ones out there. If they did choose to mine an inhabited planet such as the Earth, they’d probably wipe out all life first so that they wouldn’t have to deal with all the ankle biting from the pesky humans.

#2. Hybridization for Their Dying Species

Another popular theory by alien-believers is that aliens are running a hybridization program. The theory postulates aliens are a dying species, abducting humans, and taking DNA to merge with their own in order to strengthen their own biology. Many people believe it’s already happening.

The Arguments for an Alien Hybridization Program

The proponents of the theory point to cases of alien abduction & cattle mutilations as evidence. Sightings of cryptids, such as the Chupacabra, are cited as examples of alien hybridization having gone wrong.

Additionally, many female abductees describe being artificially inseminated and forced to carry fetuses only to be abducted later and having it removed. Male abductees frequently describe having semen extracted from them by their alien abductors. Some folks claim to have had sexual encounters with extraterrestrials.

The Reality – You Don’t Need Much DNA for Hybridization

By far, the weakest part of the entire theory is that a little DNA goes a long way. A single human carries enough DNA information to hybridize an entire generation of extraterrestrials. Aside from the fact that many abduction cases can be dismissed as instances of sleep paralysis, continued abductions for 50+ years would be unnecessary.

It’s also worth noting that a species capable of interstellar travel would have learned how to genetically modify themselves without the need for samples from a relatively primordial species such as ourselves.

The Most Likely Scenarios for an Alien Invasion

This set of scenarios for an alien invasion take into account what science knows about intelligent life and how it behaves. Of course, we only have ourselves to look at, but you work with what you’ve got right? These scenarios which come from real scientists are much more disturbing than some of the fantasy stories tossed around by the ancient alien and conspiracy crowds.

#1. Their Own Earth-like Planet was Destroyed

What if aliens weren’t very different from us? What if they came from a planet just like ours in a neighboring solar system? Maybe their planet died or became uninhabitable, and the entire species took the skies looking for a new place to call home.

Nebula

Woah, This One is Crazy to Think About

As a skeptic, this scenario for an alien invasion is mind blowing because it could actually happen. No planet lives forever. Our own Earth has gone through several mass extinction events and there’s no reason to think other planets would be any different.

We’d likely be powerless to stop it, and if our own history of exploration is any indication, it wouldn’t turn out very well for us humans. Think about what happened to the Native Americans when Europeans discovered the New World…

#2. Natural Resources that Support Carbon-Based Life

If there’s one thing more rare in the universe than gold and diamonds, it’s life. At least, life as we know it – carbon-based life. Life with all its associated proteins & fats is likely the rarest thing in the cosmos. We know this because we’ve looked around and not found it anywhere else.

Earth’s Natural Resources Would be a Figurative Goldmine

While it rains diamonds on Jupiter and Saturn, the compounds necessary to support carbon-based life are much rarer. Earth’s trees, plants, animals, & humans might be so rare in the universe that aliens could invade in order to use these sources of energy.

The rarity of life in the universe makes the Earth a prime candidate for aliens wishing to create a planetary zoo or to rule us. They could also potentially farm the life on Earth for food much as humans currently do.

#3. Dominance

It could simply be that a space-faring race may come to the earth simply to rule the population. Remember Superman 2? Political and social power can be addictive and satisfying to intelligent beings. The desire to rule may even be a common trait of all intelligent species.

alien invasion grey alien

The Desire to Rule Depends on the Aliens

The culture of the aliens who happen to find us really determines the likelihood of this scenario. By all counts, it’s a true alien invasion of the type only seen in movies and cinema. The takeover could be quick and violent, or it could be slow and shadowy. Proponents say it’s already happening. They point to reports of reptilian aliens infiltrating our government and big corporations as evidence.

#4. They Might Be Looking for a Planetary Zoo

Zoos are pretty cool. Maybe aliens think so too? Perhaps aliens wouldn’t actually invade the earth as much as keeping it ‘caged up’ for observation.

Another Very Possible Alien Invasion Scenario

Like the previous example, the planetary zoo is very possible. What’s really crazy? It might already be happening and we aren’t even aware of it.

#5. Food – Humans? Yummy!

There isn’t a single animal on this planet that humans won’t eat. We’ll eat anything except other humans (and there are even exceptions to that as well). Aliens might be the same way, especially if carbon-based life turns out to be a compatible food for their biology.

The Scariest Scenario of All: Humans = Cattle

Based our own behavior towards other animals, this scenario is highly likely. Perhaps, it’s the most likely of all. And it’s utterly terrifying. With advanced intelligence and technology, humans would be raised as cattle scarcely aware of our true purpose. We might live out our lives without so much as a hint of our grisly ends at the hands of our alien farmers.

Other Reasons?

We can only guess at the motives of our potential alien invaders. Perhaps the alien invasion will have nothing to do with us at all, or maybe it will have everything to do with us. Regardless, if aliens ever do come to meet us with technology millions of years ahead of us, we won’t have much say in the matter anyway. And that’s the scariest part of the entire thing.

What do you think? Why would aliens invade the earth? Let us know below in the comments.

Aliens Don't Exist: Our Solar System Is an Anomaly, Study Claims

Aliens Don't Exist: Our Solar System Is an Anomaly, Study Claims.

Aliens Don't Exist: Our Solar System Is an Anomaly, Study Claims

We've said it before, but it seems like the universe keeps proving that it's a lot more complicated than the Drake Equation would lead us to believe.

Previously, the thousands of exoplanets we discovered last year would suggest that life exists in some solar system out there, if most solar systems end up looking like ours. But new research has revealed that most solar systems are very, very different—meaning that finding alien life could be even more difficult.

According to a new paper in the Astronomical Journal, most of the solar systems observed by the Kepler telescope have planets that are a) roughly the same size and b) roughly the same distance from one another. Compared to our solar system, which has huge gas planets like Jupiter and Saturn and tiny, rocky planets like Venus and Mercury at varying distances from one another, these systems seem to be much more uniform.

This may mean that out solar system's formation was actually an anomaly:

"In classic planet formation theory, planets form in the protoplanetary disk that surrounds a newly formed star. The planets might form in compact configurations with similar sizes and a regular orbital spacing, in a manner similar to the newly observed pattern in exoplanetary systems...Abundant evidence in the solar system suggests that Jupiter and Saturn disrupted our system's early structure, resulting in the four widely-spaced terrestrial planets we have today. That planets in most systems are still similarly sized and regularly spaced suggests that perhaps they have been mostly undisturbed since their formation."

All of this adds a new layer to the search for life on other planets: apart from finding planets in the "Goldilocks" area, where they are neither too far nor too close to their star, scientists may start digging into what factors decide the size and spacing of planets in solar systems, which will determine what systems end up looking like ours.

Having smaller, rocky planets closer together near the sun may be a new marker to look for in the search for life.

These Stunning Blue Alien Crystals Contain Water and Organic Molecules

These Stunning Blue Alien Crystals Contain Water and Organic Molecules

Asteroids have been spitballing life juice at each other for billions of years, and we have the receipts.

Becky Ferreira

Becky Ferreira

Every meteorite that falls to Earth has an incredible story to tell about its extraterrestrial origins and interplanetary adventures. That’s particularly true of the 4.5 billion-year-old space rocks known as Monahans and Zag, which respectively landed in Texas and Morocco in 1998. Soon after their recovery, scientists detected microscopic pockets of water and halite (rock salt) crystals in the meteorites—a direct window into an ancient briny world from the solar system’s infancy.

Now, an extensive analysis of the meteorites led by Open University astrobiologist Queenie Chan reveals that these alien salt crystals contain organic matter, or “life’s precursor molecules,” as the team put it. These carbon compounds provide new insights into the distribution of prebiotic materials in the early solar system, while shedding light on the meteorites’ protracted and occasionally bumpy voyage to Earth.

The paper, out Wednesday in Science Advances, also marks the first time scientists have found organics in extraterrestrial samples that still contain liquid water, Chan told me over email. This is significant because water and organic matter are the key ingredients for life as we know it, and the paper suggests they may have been widespread on primitive worlds in the ancient solar system.

“Finding organic compounds in meteorites [and] other extraterrestrial samples is nothing new,” Chan said. “However, this study is unique in the sense that we have studied the organic material contained within the water-bearing salt crystals within the meteorites.”

Identifying these subtle compounds within the millimeter-scale crystals required an exhaustive experimental approach. Chan’s team scrutinized the samples with a wide range of advanced spectrometry, spectroscopy, microscopy, and liquid chromatography techniques to achieve their results. They detected carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen-bearing materials “exhibiting a wide range of structural order,” as well as “aromatic, ketone, imine, and/or imidazole compounds.”

The fact that this organic matter was locked inside these sapphire-colored crystals raises the tantalizing possibility that speculative alien beings, most likely in tiny microbe form, could be preserved the same way. Chan referred me to a 1988 studythat described terrestrial bacteria suspended in small liquid inclusions within salt crystals, so it’s not absurd to think extraterrestrial life could be likewise contained.

“If life formed elsewhere, there is such a possibility that it could be trapped in a way similar to that of the terrestrial setting,” Chan told me. “Bear in mind that, while the rich deposits of organic remnants recovered from the meteorites don’t provide any proof of life outside of Earth, finding abundant organic precursors associated with water indicates that complex chemical processes could have occurred.”

“This offers a significant implication for the context for the origin of life,” she added.

Read More: Scientists Find a Quasicrystal from Outer Space in a Russian Meteorite

These organics also flesh out the backstory of the Zag and Monahans meteorites. The rocks are similar in composition to the carbonaceous surface of Ceres, the largest object in the asteroid belt, suggesting they probably originated on that world. Chan and her colleagues propose that hydrovolcanic activity on young Ceres produced brines, and when the water eventually evaporated, it left behind these salt crystals filled with organic molecules.

At some point, these hydrovolcanic disruptions on Ceres were forceful enough to blast the material into space, where exposure to ionizing radiation caused the crystals to turn that “beautiful blue color,” Chan said, which is “pretty unique in nature.”

Photomicrograph of blue halite from Zag.
Image: Dr. Queenie Hoi Shan Chan

The ejected material then impacted with another world, possibly the metal-rich asteroid Hebe, which imprinted its own signature of organics and amino acids into the meteorites. Finally, these intermixed samples were gently “stripped” from this asteroid by natural processes, and ended up on Earth some 20 years ago.

It’s pretty mind-boggling to retread this story of interworld hops, written in the chemical composition of the Zag and Monahans meteorites. What’s even trippier is the notion that these journeys may be quotidian, with similar exchanges likely occurring right now around some of the most promising candidates for life in our solar system.

“In the context of understanding moons such as Enceladus and Europa,” Chan’s team said in the study, “halite crystals formed from cryovolcanism and ejected into space represent an ideal sample to study prebiotic and possibly biotic processes on these bodies.”

It’s impossible to predict what first contact with an alien organism might look like, but with this comprehensive new paper, Chan and her colleagues have distinguished salt crystals embedded in world-hopping rocks as a smart bet.

Researchers close in on the reactions which fed the first life on Earth

Researchers close in on the reactions which fed the first life on Earth

BY ALEXANDRU MICU

New research is in hot pursuit of life’s first energy-producing reactions.

Grand prismatic spring.

Image credits Jim Peaco, National Park Service.

What’s life worth if one can’t enjoy a good meal, right? Or, failing that, any meal at all? Not very much, since our bodies need to turn that food into fuel to keep going — and they have very sophisticated mechanisms on hand to do just that.

Our cells turn oxygen organic compounds, especially sugars, into energy and CO2 through a process known as cellular respiration. You may have been told in school that mitochondria, the specialized organelles which handle cellular respiration, ‘burn’ food to release energy, and that’s a pretty functional illustration of the process. The whole picture is, however, much larger that.

Energy-producing mechanisms in our body are often referred to as cycles — one of the most common ones is the citric acid / Krebs cycle. These are usually very complicated processes, and as such, are very difficult to wrap your head around and study them in the lab. Which is a pain if you’re the kind of scientist who’s trying to understand how these cycles came to be, where they first started from, and how they evolved. However, new research could offer these researchers the lucky break they need.

A team led by Greg Springsteen, Professor at the Chemistry Department of Furman University, South Carolina, has identified what seems to be an ancient precursor of the citric acid cycle, one that could exist in the much less-refined conditions of early Earth and sustained early life.

“It’s akin to looking at a modern roadway like Route 66,” Springsteen, who’s also affiliated with NASA Center for Chemical Evolution, Atlanta, explains.

“Wagon trails were templates for Route 66. The twists and turns of the modern pathways tell us about the challenges of the original route.”

The Krebs cycle works with a chemical known as pyruvate through a series of reactions over which the molecule changes its form (through subsequent addition/removal of atoms and molecules). The end results are energy and chemical bits and pieces to be used in other reactions throughout the body. Since organisms need a lot of energy, the Krebs cycle is propped up by specially-designed enzymes which make every step in the reaction go buttery-smooth. Because of all these extras pitching in, it can be hard to figure out how the cycle looked initially, and what chemicals could have sustained the process before the enzymes came along.

Cycles.

Image credits Greg Springsteen et al., 2017, Nature.

However, the team, which also included members from the Scripps Research Institute in California and two undergrads at Furman, found two compounds which could maintain a Krebs-like cycle in experiments mimicking conditions on early Earth. Christened the HKG- and malonate-cycles, the team says these processes are likely very similar to the pre-life versions of the reactions that keep us alive today.

They’re hugely less efficient than the Krebs cycle, but that was to be expected, given the lack of supportive enzymes. More importantly, however, they’re based on a similar chemical blueprint — both cycles turn a molecule called glyoxylate into CO2 and other molecules in the presence of an electron-capturing agent. They’re so similar, the authors’ hypothesis is that biology picked them up as it was and simply tweaked and improved upon them, leading to the reactionary cycles we see today.

“We think biology mapped itself onto preexisting chemical pathways on the early Earth,” said Springsteen.

As exciting as the findings may be, take them with a grain of salt. The team doesn’t yet have much to offer in regards to how the cycles evolved over time into today’s Krebs’, and they’re yet to find the reactions occurring naturally or to prove that they did so before life took hold on Earth. Still, the two new cycles have a lot going for them — the reactions occur in a neutral (not acidic or basic) environment and in a mild temperature range. “There were environments on the early Earth where these reactions were reasonable,” the authors note.

At the very least, they give us a possible starting point from which to expand our search.

The paper “Linked cycles of oxidative decarboxylation of glyoxylate as protometabolic analogs of the citric acid cycle” has been published in the journal Nature.

ISS astronaut Norishige Kanai (first from right) grew 9 cm taller in only 3 months in space.

Credit: NASA.

Free from the pressure of gravity, the spine can relax and temporarily expand almost like an unwinded coiled spring. This is why all astronauts stationed at the International Space Station grow taller during their stint there. But the case of Japanese astronaut Norishige Kanai, who arrived at the station on Dec. 19, 2017, was extreme by all accounts, though. In the three weeks since he arrived at the ISS, Kanai claimed he had grown a staggering 3½ inches (9 centimeters) — the most he’s “grown in 3 weeks since junior high school,” the astronaut tweeted.

Typically, a normal stint at the International Space Station will see people grow about two inches taller. But every human body is different and sometimes you get these freak occurrences at the high end of the bracket.

“Good morning, everybody,” Kanai wrote on twitter. “I have a major announcement today. We had our bodies measured after reaching space, and wow, wow, wow, I had actually grown by as much as 9cm!”

“I am a little worried I won’t fit in my seat on the return trip on Soyuz,” Kanai said more jokingly than serious.

Each seat on the Russian Soyuz TMA spacecraft actually molds to the body of each astronaut to ensure a tight fit during atmospheric re-entry which can be quite the bumpy ride. You can’t be taller than 6 feet 3″ to hitch a ride, which is why anyone around that limit isn’t allowed to the ISS.

After receiving so much media coverage, Kanai’s captain questioned the astronaut about his height and the two performed a new measurement. Turns out Kanai’s initial measurement was WAY off. Apparently, the 41-year-old Japanese astronaut had stretched only 2 cm from his Earth-bound height.

Kanai tweeted: “This mis-measurement appears to have become a big deal, so I must apologize for this terrible fake news … It appears I can fit on the Soyuz, so I‘m relieved.”

Kanai didn’t explain how he arrived at this ‘mis-measurement’ but it sure is weird  After all, he is an astronaut — a person who is trained in avionics and space engineering, which should entail being able to tell an inch from three inches.

The real talk

If growing a couple inches taller might sound appealing to some of you, know that it’s only temporary since astronauts slip back to their normal height once they touch down on Earth. Actually, growing taller can only mean trouble in space where every cubic inch counts.

Growing tall on the ISS is a fleeting experience but there are really far more concerning effects zero gravity has on the human body. Scientists are only beginning to understand what long-term weightlessness is doing to human biology but already we know some things aren’t good at all. For instance, astronauts hurt their vision since the retina gets pushed forward, arteries can become clogged due to plaque buildup, and thousands of genes switch on and off.

If humanity ever becomes a space-faring species, we shall have to confront the effects of weightlessness and conquer them. In the meantime, stints made by brave astronauts on the ISS will teach us many valuable lessons.

BUSTED? Has USAF been caught hiding 'alien tech UFO' in Florida on Google Earth?

THESE could be top secret US Air Force spy craft developed using alien technology, according to staggering claims.

Defence firm Lockheed Martin is understood to be working on a state-of-the-art spy plane for the US Air Force, which could reach over 4,600mph.

Google Earth images have now surfaced of an object bearing a startling similarity to artist’s impressions of the plane.

The silvery shape was spotted at the end of a runway in the swamplands of the Sunshine State, US.

According to Tyler Glockner – who uploaded the clip to his YouTube channel secureteam10 – the area belongs to an aerospace company that has a “main foothold in designing aircraft engines that are widely used in civilian and military aviation”.

“That gives us a hint they work with secretive things,” he added.

MYSTERY: A strange craft spotted in Florida could be the USAF's secret hypersonic warplane

“What you’re seeing is a very mysterious object.

“I haven’t been able to find out what this is.

“It is no public aircraft that has been disclosed.

“You can see that this thing looks like a hypersonic aircraft or spacecraft.”

More than 390,000 people have seen the clip and were quick to offer their suggestions.

“Definitely seems to match the images of that fast jet, but why would they leave it in the open?” one asked.

Another agreed, saying: “Not very secret if they're out in the open for anyone to see!”

But a third wrote: “These look like powerboats, could be something else but there is a massive lake not far away.”

The truth is out there? Secret ALIEN programme 'concealing evidence of UFOs'

A SECRET Government group is concealing the truth about Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs), according to researchers.

The New York Times and Politico both reported on the programme

The belief in aliens visiting Earth via spacecraft was given greater validity last year following reports by both The New York Times and Politico Magazine of the secretive Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program (AATIP).

This was coupled with a video released by the Department of Defence which shows a two Navy F/A-18F fighter jets and an unknown object near San Diego.

But, some experts in UFO studies think the release was merely a test to gauge public reactions to set people up for really big news about aliens.

Retired nuclear physicist and a long-time investigator and lecturer on the UFO phenomenon, Stanton Friedman, said: "I can't say I know why things are coming out at this time.

RELATED ARTICLES

"I appreciate the courage of those former officials who came forth.”

He also criticised debunkers who advocate listening for alien signals but “ignore the tone of evidence of alien visitors”.

According to Steven Aftergood of the Project on Government Secrecy at the Federation of American Scientists in Washington, the purpose of the AATIP is “threat identification”.

He added: "But the fact that this program was initiated at the request of Senator Reid — not the Air Force — suggests that national security was not the paramount motivation here.

"It is somewhat dismaying to see how quickly 'unidentified' aerial phenomena are publicly interpreted and portrayed as UFOs of possibly extraterrestrial origin.

”Collectively, we should all be becoming more intelligent and more perceptive, not more stupid and gullible."

President and scientific director of the J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies in Chicago, Mark Rodeghier, said he was initially sceptical of UFOs.

But, after looking through hundreds of reports by witnesses, he became convinced that UFOs deserve serious study.

Speaking of the AATIP, he said the sightings "confirms something that has been believed for many years … that these sightings are still happening, we just were not learning about them”.

He said he hopes the core AATIP information that has been gathered can be released to the public and made available for scientific study.

He added: "It would be extremely disappointing and frustrating if these reports are not released for scrutiny. We need high-quality data about UFOs to do better science.

"If those reports are never released, all of this is going to be blip in UFO history.

Mark Rodeghier said he was initially sceptical of UFOs

"But even if it's only a blip in history, it's still a darn interesting blip."

A spokesman for the Scientific Coalition for Ufology (SCU), Alejandro Rojas, said the revelation of the AATIP is evidence the US Government has been researching the phenomenon for years, despite claiming no interest in the phenomenon since 1969.

Mr Rojas advocates the scientific study of UFOs and believes all information regarding them should be released so the data can be properly analysed scientifically.

He said: "Remember, the 'U' is for unidentified, not alien. We don't know what these things are.

The US Air Force had a programme called Project Blue Book

“Just because we get uncomfortable with the idea of aliens does not mean we should not investigate when the people who pilot our most advanced technology say they encounter something that outclasses their aircraft.

“It would be highly negligent not to investigate."

Between 1952 and 1969, the US Air Force’s official UFO-investigation programme called Project Blue Book came to the following conclusions:

No UFO reported, investigated and evaluated has ever indicated a threat to our national security; there is no evidence that sightings categorised as "unidentified" represent technological developments or principles beyond the range of present-day scientific knowledge, and there is no evidence that sightings categorised as "unidentified" are extraterrestrial vehicles.

Area 51’s Secret Airline is Looking for a Flight Attendant

Atlasglobal_Ukraine_flight_attendants_on_board_UR-AJA-999x540.jpeg

Area 51’s Secret Airline is Looking for a Flight Attendant

Performs Flight Attendant duties aboard Company operated aircraft.

Reports to Operations one (1) hour before scheduled flight or as otherwise assigned by supervisor.

Post/Pre-flights aircraft as assigned.

Perform light cleaning of aircraft interiors.

Active Top Secret Clearance Highly Desired

Wait, what? That sounds like the typical job description of a typical flight attendant. However, Janet is anything but typical, which explains that last qualification. Are you interested in flying in and out of Area 51? Are you willing to serve coffee to any passenger – no matter how many arms they have or how big their heads are? Can you keep your big mouth shut about it? Janet is looking for you.

As anyone who knows anything about Area 51 will tell you, Janet is a mysterious airline operating out of a terminal at Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport that is rumored to fly military and contract employees to the Nevada National Security Site (home of Area 51), and other secretive sites, including Edwards Air Force Base (California), Hill Air Force Base (Utah) and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (Ohio).  Anyone asking questions about it is jokingly (and occasionally nervously) told Janet stands for “Just Another Non-Existent Terminal.” It has six Boeing 737-600s painted white with a red stripe and five executive turboprops painted white with blue stripes.

That’s it. Nothing else to see here. Move along. Any more questions and those men over their in black with the blue gloves will see you in that small room to the right that no one ever comes out of.

Well, that’s normally the case when you try to dig deeper into this airline. However, Janet has opened itself up for scrutiny with the flight attendant job posting on the website of AECOM, the defense contractor which operates it.

“AECOM is a place where you can put your innovative thinking and business skills into high gear and work alongside other highly intelligent and motivated people. It’s a place where you can apply your skills to some of the world’s most challenging, interesting, and meaningful projects worldwide.”

That sounds like a nice place to work, especially if you like living in Las Vegas where all Janet employees are allegedly based. The duties sound like those of flight attendants at any other airline: ensures security practices and procedures are followed; provide leadership, direction, and assistance during an emergency, including aircraft evacuation; assist and administer first aid to ill or incapacitated passengers or crew members; push heavy doors weighing up to 80 pounds; possess a current state driver’s license.

Is this why Janet flight attendants need top security clearance?

And then there’s the big one: Active Top Secret Clearance Highly Desired.

That’s not easy to get. A person cannot apply for it – the application must come from a current or prospective employer. The process can take up to two years due to the high number of background checks required. Individuals with Top Secret Clearance are assumed to have access to information or material that could be expected to cause “exceptionally grave damage to national security if it was released without authorization.” The clearance must be reinvestigated every five years.

Does this job sound like something more than checking seat belts. Closing overhead doors and passing out pretzels?

If you think you can handle it, applications are now being taken. Whatever you do, don’t say you got the information from me.

Academic Claims Noah had Cell Phones, Drones and Nuclear Power

Academic Claims Noah had Cell Phones, Drones and Nuclear Power

Does anyone in the world NOT know the story of Noah and his DIY wooden ark filled with family and animals (not necessarily in that order)? After all, it’s been retold many times in many tomes, including the Old Testament, the Quran, the Ethiopian Orthodox Book of Jubilees, the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Epic of Gilgamesh and has spawned hunts for its existence and amusement parks recreating the experience. And yet … a Turkish academic claims all of these have the story wrong. He believes Noah built his ark with steel plates, propelled it with nuclear power, sent a drone to look for dry land, communicated with his son via cellphone and was able to save all of the world’s species because he filled the ark with not pairs of animals but sperm and eggs. Really!

“I am a scientist, I speak for science”

Yavuz Ornek, a lecturer at the Marine Sciences Faculty of Istanbul University, made these bold ‘scientific’ revelations in a recent appearance on a talk show on Turkey’s TRT channel that was translated by Hurriyet Daily News . He based his alternative flood narrative on the idea that the waves were too massive and the distances too far to allow mere wood and doves to function successfully.

“There were huge 300 to 400-metre-high waves and his [the Prophet Noah’s] son was many kilometers away. The Quran says Noah spoke with his son. But how did they manage to communicate? Was it a miracle? It could be. But we believe he communicated with his son via cellphone.”

How many bars do you have on your phone?

If you believe that people living 5.000 to 7,000 years ago – the time when many archeologists suggest an historical deluge occurred and inspired the various accounts of Noah – had modern technology such as cellphones (and towers) to communicate over great distances, it’s not a stretch for Ornek to extrapolate that other advanced (and not-so-advanced) technologies such as nuclear power, drones and steel allowed Noah to build a ship to withstand and sail through 1,300-foot waves and survey the area while buffeted by high winds that would have kept birds from flying.

But in vitro fertilization? That would certainly allow Noah to build a much smaller ark filled with Petri dishes and beakers stored in nuclear powered coolers … right? Remember, Ornek is a “scientist” who speaks “for science,” not religion, so he is looking for scientific solutions to 7,000-year-old problems and, since wood, nails, doves and pairs of animals don’t solve the problem, he solves it with what he knows best – modern technology.

If only there was a better way.

But … how did Noah get this modern technology? Not surprisingly, Ornek doesn’t answer that question. However, if one accepts even just some of the ancient astronauts/aliens theories, is it that farfetched to think that the same beings who helped build the pyramids might have also aided in constructing the ark and saving life on earth? Sure, if they had that kind of knowledge and power, a better choice might be to stop the flood, but what kind of stories and movies would that inspire?

Since he’s in Turkey, perhaps Professor Ornek should join in on one of the expeditions to find the ark on Mt. Ararat. And bring a Geiger counter.

Strange Tales From Secret Bases

keep-out-999x540.jpg

Strange Tales From Secret Bases

We hear a lot of tales of crashed UFOs and dead aliens secretly taken to well-guarded government facilities for study. But, what about cases where the incident/discovery went down in the heart of the sensitive facility itself? That’s altogether quite another thing. I’ll share two such stories with you, one from the U.K. in the 1990s, and the other from the United States in the early part of the 1980s. Both are deeply weird, but for extremely different reasons. As will soon become apparent.

Porton Down is an installation located in the English county of Wiltshire. Its overwhelmingly-classified work focuses to a very significant degree on exotic viruses, chemical-warfare and biological-warfare. Although work at Porton Down originally, and secretly, began at the height of the tumultuous First World War, it was not until the dawning of the 1940s that the installation became the central hub for British interest in, and concerns relative to, the expanding realms of chemical- and biological-warfare. From 1946 onward, one year after the successful defeat of Nazi Germany, Porton Down’s work began to focus more on the defensive – rather than chiefly offensive – aspects of such issues, and in 1957 the installation was duly christened the Microbiological Research Establishment.

By the late-1970s, a decision was made to place the MRE under the control of a civil body. As a result, significant reorganization duly occurred: on April 1, 1979, the MRE became the Center for Applied Microbiology and Research. Then, in 1995, it was absorbed into the Defense Evaluation and Research Agency. Six years later, there was yet another change: DERA split into two organizations, a private body called QinetiQ, and the Defense Science and Technology Laboratory, a body steeped in official secrecy, as a result of the fact that it is an arm of the Ministry of Defense. After that, the facility became known as DSTL, Porton Down.

View of Porton Down

All of which brings us to a very strange story. Jonathan Downes is the director of the U.K.-base Center for Fortean Zoology. But, it’s not just strange creatures like Bigfoot, Nessie, and Mothman that have attracted Downes’ attention. It’s the issue of Crop Circles too. For years, there have been rumors of classified, military/government investigations into the Crop Circle phenomenon in the U.K.

Downes publicly stated something that may have had a bearing on those same rumors. He said, in 2000: “I am aware that midway through 1996 on land adjacent to the Government’s chemical and biological research establishment at Porton Down, Wiltshire, a Crop Circle was found. When it was first seen, the circle was still in the process of being formed and had actually been surrounded by both troops and police who had cordoned off the area.”

I have heard variations on this very odd story over the years, suggesting that an intricate formation was indeed found within the grounds of Porton Down in the mid-90s. Whether it was the work of fence-jumping circle-makers of a very human mind, or the work of something much stranger, is very much still open to debate. Of course, if the formation really was forming as the police and the military watched on, then that effectively rules out a human connection. Moving onto Area 51…

From 2003 to 2009 I lectured at Ryan Wood’s annual UFO Crash-Retrieval Conference, which was held in Las Vegas, Nevada. As is so often the case at such conferences, an attendee came up to me at the 2008 event with a very strange story to tell. Aged around thirty he said that his now-retired father had worked out at Area 51 in the early 1980s, specifically in the development of Stealth technology for military aircraft. The guy said that on several occasions, in the 1990s, he had asked his father about the rumors of crashed UFOs and dead aliens held at the secret vase. His father said that the only thing he knew about aliens at Area 51 came from watching TV shows. Indeed, he told his son that he had never seen any evidence at all of alien-related activity at Area 51. But, there was one strange event that the man was willing to share with his son – and which was then shared with me.

The story told to me was that on one occasion in January 1981, a pedal bike was found deep in a remote part of the vast amount of land that is collectively known as Area 51. Yes, a bicycle. The highly-sophisticated sensors that are carefully placed all around the facility had picked up the sudden presence of something not far from one such sensor. So, a security team was quickly sent out to investigate. It was that team, I was told, which found the bike. But, there was something very strange about the bicycle: it was extensively damaged – as if it had plummeted to the ground from a great height.

Had it fallen from an aircraft? Probably not! It’s a fact that unauthorized flights over Area 51, and in the immediate vicinity, are treated very seriously. Any such event over the base would have resulted in drastic (maybe even deadly…) action. And, of course, the base would likely have gone on lock-down. Even NASA’s astronauts have almost found themselves in trouble for photographing the facility from space.

The guy who shared the story with me said that the finding of the bike was a matter of deep concern: how had it got there? Where was the rider? Who was the rider? Why did the bike look like it had fallen from a great height? There were no answers. As a result, the investigation was finally closed down. Quiet and concerned discussion of the weird affair apparently continued for quite some time though, among those who had heard of it. The whole thing, the man told me, became a bit “of a legend.”

Extra-terrestrial Hypatia stone rattles solar system status quo

Extra-terrestrial Hypatia stone rattles solar system status quo

Date:
January 9, 2018
Source:
University of Johannesburg
Summary:
Analyses on a small pebble found in south-west Egypt cast significant questions on a widely-held view about the primitive pre-solar dust cloud which our Sun, Earth and other planets were formed from. Researchers found exotic micro-mineral compounds in the 'Hypatia' stone that are not known to occur on Earth, elsewhere in our solar system, or in known meteorites or comets
FULL STORY

Researchers Jan Kramers and Georgy Belyanin found mineral compounds unlike anything on Earth, or in known meteorites or comets, in these fragments from the Hypatia stone, which was picked up in south-west Egypt in the Libyan Desert Glass Field.

In 2013, researchers announced that a pebble found in south-west Egypt, was definitely not from Earth. By 2015, other research teams had announced that the 'Hypatia' stone was not part of any known types of meteorite or comet, based on noble gas and nuclear probe analyses.

(The stone was named Hypatia after Hypatia of Alexandria, the first Western woman mathematician and astronomer.)

However, if the pebble was not from Earth, what was its origin and could the minerals in it provide clues on where it came from? Micro-mineral analyses of the pebble by the original research team at the University of Johannesburg have now provided unsettling answers that spiral away from conventional views of the material our solar system was formed from.

Mineral structure

The internal structure of the Hypatia pebble is somewhat like a fruitcake that has fallen off a shelf into some flour and cracked on impact, says Prof Jan Kramers, lead researcher of the study published in Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta on 28 Dec 2017.

"We can think of the badly mixed dough of a fruit cake representing the bulk of the Hypatia pebble, what we called two mixed 'matrices' in geology terms. The glace cherries and nuts in the cake represent the mineral grains found in Hypatia 'inclusions'. And the flour dusting the cracks of the fallen cake represent the 'secondary materials' we found in the fractures in Hypatia, which are from Earth," he says.

The original extraterrestrial rock that fell to Earth must have been at least several meters in diameter, but disintegrated into small fragments of which the Hypatia stone is one.

Weird matrix

Straight away, the Hypatia mineral matrix (represented by fruitcake dough), looks nothing like that of any known meteorites, the rocks that fall from space onto Earth every now and then.

"If it were possible to grind up the entire planet Earth to dust in a huge mortar and pestle, we would get dust with on average a similar chemical composition as chondritic meteorites," says Kramers. "In chondritic meteorites, we expect to see a small amount of carbon{C} and a good amount of silicon (Si). But Hypatia's matrix has a massive amount of carbon and an unusually small amount of silicon."

"Even more unusual, the matrix contains a high amount of very specific carbon compounds, called polyaromatic hydrocarbons, or PAH, a major component of interstellar dust, which existed even before our solar system was formed. Interstellar dust is also found in comets and meteorites that have not been heated up for a prolonged period in their history," adds Kramers.

In another twist, most (but not all) of the PAH in the Hypatia matrix has been transformed into diamonds smaller than one micrometer, which are thought to have been formed in the shock of impact with the Earth's atmosphere or surface. These diamonds made Hypatia resistant to weathering so that it is preserved for analysis from the time it arrived on Earth.

Weirder grains never found before

When researcher Georgy Belyanin analyzed the mineral grains in the inclusions in Hypatia, (represented by the nuts and cherries of a fruitcake), a number of most surprising chemical elements showed up.

"The aluminum occurs in pure metallic form, on its own, not in a chemical compound with other elements. As a comparison, gold occurs in nuggets, but aluminum never does. This occurrence is extremely rare on Earth and the rest of our solar system, as far as is known in science," says Belyanin.

"We also found silver iodine phosphide and moissanite (silicon carbide) grains, again in highly unexpected forms. The grains are the first documented to be found in situ (as is) without having to first dissolve the surrounding rock with acid," adds Belyanin. "There are also grains of a compound consisting of mainly nickel and phosphorus, with very little iron; a mineral composition never observed before on Earth or in meteorites," he adds.

Dr Marco Andreoli, a Research Fellow at the School of Geosciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, and a member of the Hypatia research team says, "When Hypatia was first found to be extraterrestrial, it was a sensation, but these latest results are opening up even bigger questions about its origins."

Unique minerals in our solar system

Taken together, the ancient unheated PAH carbon as well as the phosphides, the metallic aluminum, and the moissanite suggest that Hypatia is an assembly of unchanged pre-solar material. That means, matter that existed in space before our Sun, the Earth and the other planets in our solar system were formed.

Supporting the pre-solar concept is the weird composition of the nickel-phosphorus-iron grains found in the Hypatia inclusions. These three chemical elements are interesting because they belong to the subset of chemical elements heavier than carbon and nitrogen which form the bulk of all the rocky planets.

"In the grains within Hypatia the ratios of these three elements to each other are completely different from that calculated for the planet Earth or measured in known types of meteorites. As such these inclusions are unique within our solar system," adds Belyanin.

"We think the nickel-phosphorus-iron grains formed pre-solar, because they are inside the matrix, and are unlikely to have been modified by shock such as collision with the Earth's atmosphere or surface, and also because their composition is so alien to our solar system," he adds.

"Was the bulk of Hypatia, the matrix, also formed before our solar system? Probably not, because you need a dense dust cloud like the solar nebula to coagulate large bodies" he says.

A different kind of dust

Generally, science says that our solar system's planets ultimately formed from a huge, ancient cloud of interstellar dust (the solar nebula) in space. The first part of that process would be much like dust bunnies coagulating in an unswept room. Science also holds that the solar nebula was homogenous, that is, the same kind of dust everywhere.

But Hypatia's chemistry tugs at this view. "For starters, there are no silicate minerals in Hypatia's matrix, in contrast to chondritic meteorites (and planets like the Earth, Mars and Venus), where silicates are dominant. Then there are the exotic mineral inclusions. If Hypatia itself is not presolar, both features indicate that the solar nebula wasn't the same kind of dust everywhere -- which starts tugging at the generally accepted view of the formation of our solar system," says Kramers.

Into the future

"What we do know is that Hypatia was formed in a cold environment, probably at temperatures below that of liquid nitrogen on Earth (-196 Celsius). In our solar system it would have been way further out than the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, where most meteorites come from. Comets come mainly from the Kuiper Belt, beyond the orbit of Neptune and about 40 times as far away from the sun as we are. Some come from the Oort Cloud, even further out. We know very little about the chemical compositions of space objects out there. So our next question will dig further into where Hypatia came from," says Kramers.

The little pebble from the Libyan Desert Glass strewn field in south-west Egypt presents a tantalizing piece for an extraterrestrial puzzle that is getting ever more complex.

The research was funded by University of Johannesburg Research council via the PPM Research Centre.

The researchers would like to thank Aly Barakat, Mario di Martino and Romano Serra for access to the Hypatia sample material; and Michael Wiedenbeck and his co-workers at the Geoforschungszentrum Potsdam, Germany for their collaboration.

ss.jpg

Mijn collega in Katwijk.

Of rond cirkelde.

What caused the Bright Flash that turned night into day over Russia on Jan 7, 2018?

What caused the Bright Flash that turned night into day over Russia on Jan 7, 2018?

A mysterious bright flash turned night into day over a huge area of Russia on January 7, 2018. The phenomenon was seen and felt over thousands of miles in Russia, especially in the regions Bashkortostan, Udmurtia, and Tatarstan.

bright%2Bflash%2Bufo%2Bmeteor%2BRussia%2B2018.jpg

The flash accompanied by large explosions, whereby even the ground was shaking and moving according to witnesses was blamed on a UFO visitation or a meteor exploding in the atmosphere.

Russian officials and scientists immediately denied that there had been a Russian missile test or any reported space rock crashing to earth, but it is clear that something unprecedented has taken place in the sky.

It reminds us the Tugunska event from June 30, 1908 when a huge explosion, which came out of nowhere, ripped through the air above a remote forest in Siberia, near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River and flattened 2,000 square kilometers of forest.

It is said that in the Tugunska case, a UFO has destroyed itself by crashing into an object to save Russia with as a result that the object is thought to have disintegrated at an altitude of 5 to 10 kilometers rather than to have hit the surface of the earth.

Why We Should Rethink How We Talk About “Alien” Species

Why We Should Rethink How We Talk About “Alien” Species

In a trend that echoes the U.S.-Mexico border debate, some say that calling non-native animals “foreigners” and “invaders” only worsens the problem.

AJYTGK.jpg

Nilgai antelope, like the cattle fever ticks they carry, are considered an invasive species in places like Texas. (Don Despain / Alamy)

In South Texas, government agents patrol a barrier line that snakes some 500 miles along the course of the Rio Grande. Their mission: to protect their country from would-be invaders. But these aren’t the U.S. Border Patrol—they’re employees of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. And their purpose is to keep out the ticks that carry cattle fever, a deadly bovine disease endemic to Mexico.

The USDA’s “tick riders,” as they are called, are tasked with keeping infected cattle from straying deeper into Texas, where the deadly fever poses a serious threat to the beef industry. Whenever they find a stray or infected cow, they track it down and dip it in pesticide to kill the ticks and prevent them from spreading. Yet despite their best efforts, the tick riders’ challenge has recently increased, as more and more of the hardy ticks find their way across the border.

A large part of the problem is that cattle fever ticks also have another host: Nilgai antelope, a species native to India that was imported to North America in the 1930s as an exotic target for game hunters. These antelope, like the ticks themselves, and the pathogen they carry, are considered an invasive species. They are cursed not only for their role as a disease vector, but because they eat native plants and compete with cattle for food.

That’s why, unlike native white-tailed deer—which also host ticks—they are subject to an unrestricted hunting season, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service sponsors regular Nilgai hunts in protected areas.

The differences in how authorities treat domesticated cattle, native deer and wild, imported antelope illustrate a stark divide in ecology. For decades, both scientists and laypeople have referred to organisms like the Nilgai as “alien,” “exotic” and “invasive.” But as long as ecologists have warned about the danger of invasive species, others have asked whether this kind of language—which carries connotations of war and xenophobia—could cloud the science and make rational discussion more difficult.

In the same border region, U.S. immigration officers patrol their own line, looking for signs of illegal human immigration into the United States. If caught, these immigrants—often referred to as “aliens” by the media or even “illegals” by the president—face arrest and deportation. The parallel has not been lost on those who study invasive species. In a recent essay, New School environmental studies professor Rafi Youatt wrote that a trip to Texas left him contemplating “the opposition of invasiveness to nativeness and purity” and “the many ways that invasiveness attaches to both human and nonhuman life.”

In an era of renewed focus on borders, it’s hard to ignore the similarities between how we talk about non-native animals—hyper-fertile “foreigners” colonizing “native” ecosystems—and the words some use to discuss human immigration. And as international relations have become more heated, so too has the debate among researchers over the pointed rhetoric we use to talk about animals, plants and micro-organisms that hail from elsewhere.

Cattle-Fever-Tick-quarantine-road-sign-25.jpg

As cattle fever ticks expand their range, “tick riders” patrol a 500-mile quarantine line to protect U.S. cattle populations. (Texas A&M)

Charles Darwin was perhaps the first to posit the idea that introduced species might outcompete natives. In 1859, he wrote that “natural selection … adapts the inhabitants of each country only in relation to the degree of perfection of their associates,” so organisms that evolved under more difficult conditions have “consequently been advanced through natural selection and competition to a higher stage of perfection or dominating power.” It would be another 125 years before invasion ecology coalesced as a subfield. But by the 1990s, it was driving public policy.

Today, governments and non-profits dedicate considerable resources to controlling invasive species. The U.S. and Canada spend tens of millions of dollars a year to keep Asian carp out of the Great Lakes. Eurasian garlic mustard is a common target of volunteer weed-pulls organized by local parks departments. Estimates of the number of invasive species vary widely: according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, there may be as many as 50,000 non-native species in the United States, including 4,300 that could be considered invasive.

The devastation wrought by these plants, animals and microbes has inspired both desperate and creative measures—from government-sponsored eradication of non-natives off entire islands to restaurants that put invasive species on a plate. These efforts are motivated by very real concerns about economics, the environment and human and animal health. But the idea that non-native species are inherently undesirable also has a dark history.

In the 19th century, European and American landscape architects expressed a patriotic pride that was sometimes tinged with nativist suspicion of “foreign” plants. In the 1930s, the Nazis took this concept to the extreme with a campaign to “cleanse the German landscape of unharmonious foreign substance.” One target was an unassuming Eurasian flower, Impatiens parviflora, which a 1942 report condemned as a “Mongolian invader,” declaring, “[A]n essential element of this culture, namely the beauty of our home forest, is at stake.”

Today’s critics of invasive species rhetoric are quick to clarify that they aren’t calling their colleagues racist. But Macalester College ecologist Mark Davis, for one, questions whether our modern campaign against non-native species has gone too far.

Davis is perhaps the field’s most notorious heretic, lead author of a widely-read 2011 essay in the journal Nature, co-signed by 18 other ecologists, that argued for judging non-native species based on environmental impact rather than origin. He believes that invasion ecology has been led astray by its central metaphor: the idea that non-native species are invading native ecosystems, and that we are at war with them.

“Militaristic language is just so unscientific and emotional,” says Davis. “It’s an effective way to bring in support, but it’s not a scientific way.”

The idea of invaders from elsewhere, whether human, animal or vegetal, taps into one of the bedrocks of human psychology. We form our social identity around membership in certain groups; group cohesion often relies on having a common enemy. Fear of contamination also drives human behavior, an impulse frequently evident in rhetoric about so-called “illegal immigrants” whom President Trump has declared—erroneously—to be bringing “tremendous infectious disease” across the border.

Davis does not dispute that many non-native species are harmful. Novel viruses like Zika and Ebola clearly threaten human health. Long-isolated animals on islands or in lakes have been quickly wiped out after new predators arrived along with humans. But he argues that most introduced species are harmless, and some are even beneficial. The U.S. government has spent 70 years trying to eradicate tamarisk shrubs from the Southwest, for example, but it turns out the plants are now a preferred nesting spot for an endangered songbird.

Inflammatory rhetoric may be counterproductive, encouraging us to expend resources fighting problems that are not really problems, says Davis. “The starting point should not be that these are dangerous species,” he says. “You need to focus on what they do. We’re taught, don’t judge people because of where they come from—it should be the same with novel species.”

Many of Davis’s colleagues argue the opposite: that it’s dangerous to assume non-native species are innocent until proven guilty. Numerous examples from history back them up: In 1935, farmers carried two suitcases of South American cane toads to Australia, hoping they would eat the beetles that plagued their sugar cane crop; today, more than 1.5 billion of the toxic amphibians have spread across the continent, poisoning native animals who try to eat them. Brown tree snakes, inadvertently imported to Guam after World War II, wiped out all the island’s native birds.

Daniel Simberloff, a respected ecologist at the University of Tennessee, is one of Davis’s colleagues who disagrees with his approach. In fact, he compares Davis and others who share his views to people who—despite overwhelming scientific consensus—deny the existence of climate change. “So far it hasn’t been as dangerous as climate denial,” Simberloff says, “but I’m waiting for this to be used as an excuse not to spend money [on controlling invasive species.]”

Simberloff is the author of the 2013 book Invasive Species: What Everyone Needs to Know, a book aimed at policy-makers, land managers and others who are working to fight the spread of invasive species. He recoils at the idea that the work of modern invasion biology, and the language scientists use to talk about it, has any relation to xenophobia against humans. Military language, he says, is often simply an accurate description of the threat and the necessary work of mitigating it.

“If we’re allowed to say ‘war on cancer,’ we should be allowed to say ‘war on cheatgrass,’” he says, referring to the prolific Eurasian weed that has fueled increasingly intense wildfires throughout the Western United States. “Does it help generate policy and higher-level activities that would not otherwise have been? Maybe. Legislators are not scientists and are probably motivated by colorful language—‘They’ve made a beachhead here,’ ‘We’ve got to put out this fire,’ or what have you.”

CNX4G2.jpg

Tamarisk shrubs, like this one in Greece, were long considered an undesirable invasive species in the American southwest. Today, conservationists recognize the plant as a valuable nesting site for endangered songbirds. (blickwinkel / Alamy)

Still, Simberloff has noted a gradual shift in vocabulary among his colleagues over the past decade, which he reasons has to do with greater awareness of the political implications of certain words—especially words we also use to talk about people. Today, for example, few American scientists use the word “alien” to refer to these species, despite its continued appearance in books and articles directed at a general audience.

“It has a pejorative connotation now in the U.S.,” Simberloff explains. “People tend to say ‘non-indigenous’ or ‘non-native’ now.”

Outside of academia, there is also evidence that conservation workers who confront invasive species directly are moving away from military metaphors. In a recent paper for the journal Biological Invasions, researchers at the University of Rhode Island interviewed New England land managers working on coastal marshes and found that they no longer spoke of the now-common invasive reed Phragmites australis in militaristic terms.

Instead of “trying to battle with, kill, eradicate, or wage war upon Phragmites in coastal ecosystems,” the managers tended to discuss the reed in the context of ecosystem resilience. They even went so far as to note the ability of Phragmites to build up elevation as sea levels rise, perhaps mitigating the impact of climate change on vulnerable marshland.

These shifts in metaphor and terminology are necessary, says Sara Kuebbing, a post doc in ecology at Yale who was a student of Simberloff’s.

“Terms like ‘alien’ and ‘exotic’ have a lot of baggage,” she says. “We’re such a young field, and in the beginning everyone used their own terms to describe non-native species, but I don’t think they were thinking very deeply about the social implications of these words. Consolidating around consistent terminology is really important for the field, and for us to communicate to others, to help people understand the difference between non-native and non-native invasive species as we translate science into policy and management.”

A shift in rhetoric isn’t the only way that international border disputes impact ecology. Today, human-made borders interrupt natural environments, making it harder to control invasive species and protect ecosystems.

The challenge is more than physical. The United States and Canada depend on one another to keep Asian carp from reaching the Great Lakes, for example. And while U.S. border agencies like the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service make numerous references to their role as “our first line of defense” against “alien species,” scientists say that this sort of fortification can only hold so long without communication and cooperation between neighboring countries, trade partners, indigenous groups and local communities.

On the tick line in South Texas, the resurgence of cattle fever and the looming threat of vector-borne pathogens spreading with climate change has made the importance of cross-border cooperation especially clear. While there is no vaccine in the United States, Mexico does have one. The problem? It’s made in Cuba, and despite research showing its effectiveness against one of the two cattle tick species, sensitive international politics have delayed its approval for widespread use north of the border.

The prospect of a vaccine is “exciting,” says Pete Teel, an entomologist at Texas A&M. Meanwhile, however, violent drug cartels in Mexico represent a new complication, as they threaten to make wildlife control and quarantine enforcement more dangerous. While scientists in both countries are eager to work together, the darker side of human nature—our violence, greed and fear of the foreign—is always poised to interfere.

“Despite whatever is going on elsewhere, people are working to manage this, and ideas move back and forth between Texas and Mexico,” Teel says. “But everything is intertwined across the border.”

Fransen geloven echt massaal in complottheorieën.

Zoals jullie vermelden, fotograferen Chinezen alles.

Conflicting Reports Follow SpaceX’s Secret Zuma Mission

Conflicting Reports Follow SpaceX’s Secret Zuma Mission

 39556548902_dc8033556c_k-750x300.jpg
IN BRIEF
Conflicting reports about the supposed loss of a secret spy satellite have begun to swirl after a seemingly successful mission. SpaceX contends that it fulfilled its duty without a hitch.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Conflicting reports are surfacing after SpaceX’s seemingly successful launch of a Falcon 9 rocket with a secret government payload, code-named Zuma. While it appeared that the launch went off without a hitch, the full launch and separation of the nose cone, which surrounded the secret satellite, was not streamed as it normally is, due to the classified nature of the mission.

Reports coming from the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg are claiming that Zuma burned up upon reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere. These reports are partially based upon a briefing supposedly given to lawmakers and congressional staffers indicating that the satellite did not separate from the rocket as planned.

SpaceX did not report any problems with the launch; however, while the company usually announces a successful launch regardless of the classification of the payload, no confirmation was given by SpaceX or Northrup Grumman, the company that manufactured the secret satellite.

Futurism reached out to SpaceX and obtained the following statement from Gwynne Shotwell, President and COO of SpaceX, “For clarity: after review of all data to date, Falcon 9 did everything correctly on Sunday night. If we or others find otherwise based on further review, we will report it immediately. Information published that is contrary to this statement is categorically false. Due to the classified nature of the payload, no further comment is possible.”

STICKING THE LANDING

To confuse matters further, the Falcon 9’s first stage was able to successfully landback on Earth, indicating that the rocket was still fully operational.

Even more so, the US Strategic Command added an entry to its Space-Track catalog of artificial objects orbiting the planet, indicating that the new satellite was able to make at least one orbit. That was before another confusing piece was added: their spokesman Navy Captain Brook DeWalt stated that Strategic Command had “nothing to add to the satellite catalog at this time.” This could either indicate that there is nothing to add in addition to the new satellite entry, or that the Zuma satellite is no longer in orbit.

The conflicting reports, coupled with the seemingly incongruous aftermath, are adding a rocket-load of mystery to an already mysterious launch.

Yet SpaceX seems confident that it played its part in the Zuma mission well, and the company does not foresee this mission disrupting its schedule. According to Shotwell, “Since the data reviewed so far indicates that no design, operational or other changes are needed, we do not anticipate any impact on the upcoming launch schedule.”

She continued: “Falcon Heavy has been rolled out to launchpad LC-39A for a static fire later this week, to be followed shortly thereafter by its maiden flight. We are also preparing for an F9 launch for SES and the Luxembourg Government from SLC-40 in three weeks.”

Iced Iguanas and Fried Flying Foxes Falling From the Sky

chill-out-2073882_1920-999x532.jpg

Iced Iguanas and Fried Flying Foxes Falling From the Sky

It’s rarely a good sign when things unexpectedly fall from the sky. It’s worse when those things are living or recently dead creatures. It’s probably a sign of extremely unusual weather when some of the creatures are frozen while others are cooked alive. Is it climate change? Or something worse? During a week of freaky hot and cold spells, residents of Florida saw icy iguanas dropping from the sky while people in Australia were bombarded by fried flying foxes boiled to death by the heat. Worried yet?

A number of news sources in southern Florida reported about people finding rigid iguanas in their yards or around their pools during the sub-40 degrees Fahrenheit temperatures caused by the recent so-called ‘bomb cyclone’ that iced the east coast of the U.S. One reporter covering the phenomenon was hit by a falling iguana while driving. The lizard came back to life and ran off, leaving a huge crack in the reporter’s windshield.

Which one doesn’t belong?

Social media posts showed people carrying stiff iguanas by the tail – a practice quickly rejected by wildlife experts who warned that these non-Floridian invaders were merely in a state of hibernation due to the cold and would not be happy when awaked upside down with a human on their tail or when they find bruises due to falling frozen from trees. It’s better to use this opportunity to trap them, according to Kristen Sommers, who oversees the nonnative fish and wildlife program for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. She told CBS News:

“This provides an opportunity to capture some, but I’m not sure it’s going to be cold enough or long enough to make enough of a difference. In most cases, they’re going to warm back up and move around again, unless they’re euthanized.”

Meanwhile, in the air down under where it’s summertime … (Australia)

The Campbelltown-Macarthur Advertiser reports that 111.5 degrees Fahrenheit (44.2 degrees Celsius) temperatures in Campbelltown, New South Wales, knocked a colony of flying fox bats out of their trees near the town’s train station. The flying foxes are favorites of locals, so Kate Ryan, the colony manager, organized volunteers to help rescue them.

“They basically boil. It affects their brain — their brain just fries and they become incoherent.”

Over 200 of the flying foxes (Pteropus poliocephalus), which can have wingspans over a meter (3.3 feet) and weigh over 1 kg (2.2 lbs.) were found dead on the ground, with more caught in the trees. Ryan said most of the dead were babies whose smaller bodies were unable to regulate their temperature. Fortunately, the heatwave has dissipated and the flying foxes are back to eating insects and pollinating fruit trees.

Until the next mysterious crisis (is it really that mysterious?) knocks the iguanas and the flying foxes out of the sky again.

Mysterious Flash Lights Russia’s Sky—Witnesses Wonder: Missile? Meteor? UFO?

Mysterious Flash Lights Russia’s Sky—Witnesses Wonder: Missile? Meteor? UFO?

A blazing light turned night into day over much of Russia on Jan. 8, sparking speculation that North Korea was launching a nuclear attack, —or that the Russian government was testing a new weapon.

Not so, said members of the government and the scientific community. it was just a common meteor.

Many Russian citizens who saw—and felt—the incident are not convinced.

Artyom Russkikh saw the flash, and also felt a shock wave.

“We saw this while driving—there was a vibration and the sound of explosion in the sky. Awesome,” he told The Siberian Times.

“What was it? A meteor, a rocket from space, UFO, North Korea?”

Another witness, Firaya Zaripova, opined: “Probably it was the testing of some military weapon, if even the ground was shaking.”’

The epicenter of the explosion seemed to be over the Ural mountains, in the areas of the Udmurtia, Bashkortostan, and Tatarstan.

Ilnaz Shaykhraziev told the Daily Mail, “I saw the flash in Menzelinsk. There was also the sound of an explosion and then a vibration, I felt it.”

Menzelinsk is about 250 miles north of Kazakhstan and 500 miles east of Moscow, and about 150 miles east of Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan.

Western Russia (Screenshot—Bing Maps)

Multiple Mysteries

One reason residents of the trans-Ural region might suspect a man-made source for this explosion, is that this is not the first. There have been many extremely bright flashes and explosions through the past several years over west-central Russia.

A meteor exploded over Central Russia in February of 2013, injuring about 1,200 people. That blast was centered over Chelyabinsk, a city about 950 miles east of Moscow, Reuters reports.

Another flash was seen in February 2014, over the Kola peninsula, about 600 miles north of Moscow. According to Military.com, the flash was seen around 2:10 a.m. on Feb. 21, and was silent—there was no sound and no shock wave.

This astronomical object lit up the skies on April 19, 2014.

November 14, 2014 several people in the Sverdlovsk region of Russia, also in the Ural Mountains, filmed the night sky bursting into a bright orange-red fireball that quickly dissipated.

Just a Meteor

Astronomers from Kazan Federal University claim that there was nothing man-made about the phenomenon—it was a simply a meteor which exploded in the atmosphere.

“This was a bolide, when all substance burns in atmosphere and doesn’t reach Earth,” Dr. Sergey Golovkin, of Kazan University’s Physics Institute, told The Siberian Times.

“It is accompanied by a loud bang.

“It could have been a fragment of a spacecraft that burnt, but normally it takes them more time to enter the atmosphere, thus they can be observed for longer.

“This was a bolide that burnt in the dense layers of the atmosphere which is why it was seen over such a big territory. We didn’t register the flash because there was strong blizzard on this night.”

Yet not all Russia’s scientists agreed.

Yuri Nefefyev, director of the Engelhardt Astronomical Observatory, said the apparent explosion was, in fact, a massive discharge of atmospheric electricity.

“There are a huge number of effects linked to atmospheric electricity, many of which are not properly studied because of how rarely they occur,” he told The Siberian Times.

One witness, Denis Rozenfeld, told the Daily Mail that he agreed with the scientists.

“A meteor burned out, not reaching the lower layers of the atmosphere. Before this, it exploded and split into many small pieces. That is why there was such a sound, which came to us in a few seconds.”

Flash over Russia sparks fears of US strike on North Korea

  • Blast of light was accompanied by 'ground shaking' over large parts of Russia
  • The explosion sparked fears the US had launched a missile strike on North Korea
  • Others suggested the phenomenon was a Russian military test, meteor or a UFO
  • Light was strongest in three regions - Bashkortostan, Udmurtia, and Tatarstan

A mysterious bright flash turned night into day over a huge area of Russia - sparking fears the US had launched a strike on North Korea.

The explosion of light accompanied by the 'ground shaking' was also blamed on a UFO visitation or a meteor exploding in the atmosphere.

The phenomenon was seen and felt over thousands of miles in Russia, but was especially evident in three regions Bashkortostan, Udmurtia, and Tatarstan.

Russian officials and scientists immediately denied that there had been a Russian missile test or any reported space rock crashing to earth.

Firaya Zaripova commented on the light show in the early hours of Monday morning: 'Probably it was the testing of some military weapon, if even the ground was shaking.'

But there were denials Vladimir Putin had ordered any military tests that could have produced this dramatic scene.

What Curiosity found on Mars are probably just crystals — not fossils

What Curiosity found on Mars are probably just crystals — not fossils

 BY ALEXANDRU MICU

If you were excited about the signs of life reportedly spotted on Mars, it’s might be time to reign in your expectations. The tube-like structures identified by Curiosity were probably formed by geology, not biology, mission team members say.

Curiosity's crystals.

The troublesome structures captured by Curiosity on Jan. 2, 2018, using its Mars Hand Lens Imager. The tubular structures were likely created by crystalline growth, mission team members said.

News that Curiosity stumbled upon fossilized traces of life took the Internet by storm a few days ago. And I get it — Mars is just so tantalizingly right for our first encounter with extraterrestrial life, no matter how dead the latter may be. The planet’s dry as a brick now, but we know it used to have water and a proper atmosphere. It’s relatively close-by, enough so that we actually stand a chance of getting there in the mid-future, but it’s still largely unexplored and mysterious as of now. I too, if I may use a cliche, want to believe.

NASA however, as they tend to do, comes to nip those hopes in the bud. The tubular structures spotted on Mars were probably formed by growing crystals, not burrowing creatures, members of the Curiosity mission said.

“When we looked at these things close up, they’re linear, but they’re not tubular in the sense of being cylinders; they’re actually quite angular,” said Ashwin Vasavada of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

“They have kind of a square or a parallelogram sort of cross section and form at angles to each other when there’s multiple of them together. And all of that’s pretty reminiscent of crystalline growth.”

The team suspects that the structures are either crystals or molds left in the rock when sediments hardened around pre-existing crystals. While that’s less exciting than finding life, it’s not an inconsequential find at all — both scenarios (the second one a bit more) would require quite a lot of liquid water, suggesting that the area Curiosity is roaming around right now was abundantly wet in Mars’ past. The whole area, a flank of the towering Mount Sharp, is pretty elevated as well — over 300 meters (1,000 feet) vertically above the rover’s initial landing site on Gale Crater.

Curiosity found ample evidence for the existence of a (now dry) groundwater network and an ancient lake-and-stream system on the crater’s floor and along the mountain’s lower slopes. The team is confident that evidence of Mars’ transition from a warm and wet world to the cold, dry place it is today remained locked in the mountain’s rocks. The rover is still to find that transition zone, however, and will continue its ascent until it does so.

Everything considered the chances that this will be our first taste of alien life look slim. It’s not impossible that the tubes are trace fossils of life on Mars, it’s just not very likely given what we know so far. And, as someone who’s gone fossil-hunting in the field, I can confirm that it’s really hard to distinguish trace fossils from weird, but random, shapes left over as geology does its stuff. So making a bullet-proof case that these really are fossils would be extremely difficult on Mars.

“We just, unfortunately, may not have the ability with Curiosity to tell that,” Vasavada said.

The rover has two instruments it can use to analyze the structures. The first is a laser-touting ChemCam, supplemented with the Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS). These devices can be used to gauge the little tubes’ chemical make-up, but they’ve proven themselves difficult targets. The structures are only about 1 millimeter (0.04 inches) wide by 5 millimeters (0.2 inches) long. Still, Vasavada is confident we’ll have the results within the next week, and with them, we could get the answers we so crave.

Untill then, as the rover tweeted, science continues.

View image on Twitter

Meanwhile, back on Mars... I’m checking out these stick-like figures. Each is about a quarter-inch long. Maybe they're crystals? Or they could be minerals that filled spaces where crystals dissolved away. Stay tuned! Science continues.

U.S. Cargo Spacecraft Set for Departure from International Space Station

U.S. Cargo Spacecraft Set for Departure from International Space Station

The SpaceX Dragon cargo craft is pictured attached to the Harmony module of the International Space Station after it arrived on Dec. 17. 2017.

Credits: NASA

After delivering more than 4,800 pounds of science and supplies to the International Space Station, a SpaceX Dragon cargo spacecraft will depart the orbiting laboratory on Saturday, Jan. 13. NASA will provide live coverage of Dragon's departure beginning at 4:30 a.m. EST.

On Friday, Jan. 12, flight controllers will use the space station’s Canadarm2 robotic arm to detach Dragon from the Earth-facing side of the station's Harmony module. After Dragon is maneuvered into place, a ground-controlled command will release the spacecraft as NASA’s Expedition 54 Flight Engineers Joe Acaba and Scott Tingle monitor its departure at 5 a.m. Saturday.

Dragon’s thrusters will fire to move the spacecraft a safe distance from the station before SpaceX flight controllers in Hawthorne, California, command its deorbit burn. The spacecraft will splash down about 10:36 a.m. in the Pacific Ocean, where recovery forces will retrieve Dragon and approximately 4,100 pounds of cargo, including science samples from human and animal research, biology and biotechnology studies, physical science investigations and education activities. NASA will not provide coverage of the deorbit burn and splashdown.

NASA and the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS), the nonprofit organization that manages research aboard the U.S. national laboratory portion of the space station, will receive time-sensitive samples from experiments conducted aboard the station and begin working with researchers to process and distribute them within 48 hours of splashdown.

Dragon, the only space station resupply spacecraft capable of returning science and cargo to Earth, launched Dec. 15 on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida and arrived at the station Dec. 17 for the company’s 13th NASA-contracted commercial resupply mission to the station.

UFO 'mothership releases orbs and aliens' in bizarre footage sparking INVASION concerns

UFO 'mothership releases orbs and aliens' in bizarre footage sparking INVASION concerns

TERRIFYING footage has emerged of a large UFO in the sky, with smaller orbs appearing to disperse from what onlookers have called a "mothership".

By Callum Hoare

In the clip, we see a large white glowing object floating high in the blue sky.

“Woah, what the f*** is that thing?” The cameraman questions.

Then, for no apparent reason, three smaller orbs seem to be dropped by the larger object.

“Wow, holy s***,” the bloke adds.

They then seem to rush off into the distance in a triangular formation, before the video ends.

ALIEN INVASION? Orbs were spotted leaving a 'UFO mothership'

Captured in California, the footage was uploaded to YouTube channel UFO Invasion with the description: “Are they orbs or some type of alien spores like the Invasion of the Bodysnatchers film?”

The clip has clocked up over 1,000 views already with a number of concerned comments.

One read: “That's some serious s***!”

And another speculated: “This is very cool footage! To me this looks like a wormhole opening with orbs or crafts coming into our atmosphere.... just a guess.”

A third wasn’t so convinced though, adding: “A UAV carrier of some sort? Maybe the MQ-25 with some sort of drone drop tank? I have seen other videos similar to this, but at this distance it is hard to judge.”

It comes after a recent surge in the number of reported UFO sightings.

Earlier today, it was reported that Elon Musk’s SpaceX live feed was cut after a UFO appeared on the screen.

TR-3B Anti Gravity Spacecraft Fleet againts Ufo in South America

TR-3B Anti Gravity Spacecraft Fleet againts Ufo in South America

TR-3B Anti Gravity Spacecraft Fleet againts Ufo in South America

This is everything you ever expected not to see when talking about the TR3B! A fleet of Tr_3b filmed in South America, Brazil coupled with other alien ship. The TR-3B, a triangular anti-gravity flying platform, powered by nuclear power, appears to be the new aerospace technology craft designed and created by the (CMITF) Military and Industrial Technology Complex in the US aerospace, this aircraft until recently Top Secret was developed and created by the Aurora Program in conjunction with the SDI (Strategic Defense Initiative) and sponsored with a black budget.

The following document is the translation of the description of this artifact that Edgar Rothschild Fouche saw in Nevada in 1998.

Mr. Fouche has worked on Government Programs in the Defense Industry for the past 30 years, including Area 51, the Air Force base of Groom Lake and Nellis for several years, also on top secret projects.

Fouche describes the TR-3B propulsion system as follows: "It is a circular, plasma-filled accelerator ring called Magnetic Field Disrupter, (MFD or Magnetic Field Switch) that surrounds the crew's revolving cockpit, is far beyond any technology imaginable ... The plasma, based on mercury, is pressurized to 250,000 atmospheres at a temperature of 150 degrees Kelvin, and accelerated to 50,000 RPM to generate a superconducting plasma with the result of the interruption of the force of gravity.

The MFD generates a magnetic field vortex, which interrupts or neutralizes the effects of gravity on any mass that is in the vicinity, in a percentage of 89%. This means that the "G" force is reduced by 89%. The MFD that owns the TR-3B causes that the vehicle is extremely light and can carry out maneuvers that no other airplane could ... My sources say that the possibilities are only limited by the physical resistance of the human pilots. Which is a lot really, considering the reduction of 89% of the mass, the G forces are also reduced by 89%. The crew of the TR-3B could comfortably support up to 40G ... reduced by 89% the occupants would only feel 4.2Gs.

The DoD UFO news is fading. Now what?

The DoD UFO news is fading. Now what?

The news cycle on this latest revelation that the Department of Defense (DoD) had a project called the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP) that looked into UFOs – remember the U is for “unidentified” not aliens – seems to be coming to a close. Dozens of interviews were conducted, many, if not all, can be seen at this link, and many more stories written. But it seems with all that was learned, many more questions remain to be answered.

On December 16, 2017, The New York Times posted an article that may have forever changed how the general public views the UFO topic. Luis Elizondo, who had previously claimed to work for a UFO project for the DoD, and The New York Times, shared much more detail about the project. The news made worldwide headlines and set off a weeks long media frenzy with interviews with Elizondo, jet fighter pilots who chased UFOs, and retired Nevada Senator Harry Reid, who took the lead on securing funding for the program.

The article that started it all.

However, now that we are almost a month out, the media cycle seems to be coming to an end and the story seems to be fading. But it most likely will not stay that way, because for as many questions that were answered, many more have come to light.

For example, Elizondo said he was able to get permission to release three videos of objects they were unable to identify. So far, only two of those have been released, and even these two warrant further scrutiny. One of the better-known videos was from a case that a few UFO researchers had already been examining. This was a sighting of what has been referred to as a Tic Tac shaped UFO by crewmen in the Nimitz aircraft carrier group. The sighting was in November of 2004 near of San Diego.

Robert Powell, a UFO researcher with the Scientific Coalition for Ufology (SCU), has been working with the Navy on a Freedom of Information (FOIA) request he had made on the case. He outlined his research thus far in a previous article on OpenMinds.tv. Investigative documentarian Jeremy Corbell had also been researching this case.

Most had heard of the case from a blog post made by one of the pilots who witnessed the event. An alleged video from the event was also leaked. Now it has been confirmed the video is from the Nimitz UFO encounter, but we do not know how that video got out to the public in the first place. This was the focus of another recent OpenMinds.tv article by contributor Andreas Muller from Germany. It is video from an advanced infrared camera on an F-18. Not the kind of thing that normally makes its way to YouTube.

Although some detail about this event has made it out to the public, the reports and files on the investigation of this UFO are still under lock and key. Powell has not received any of this, despite his requests. He is hopeful now that it has been revealed AATIP looked into this case more documentation will be released.

The second video, referred to as the GIMBAL video, was released with very little information as to its origins or the situation in which it was acquired. According to the To the Stars Academy (TTSA) website, an organization Elizondo now works for, the video “was captured by a US Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet using the Raytheon AN/ASQ-228 Advanced Targeting Forward-Looking Infrared (ATFLIR) pod.” However, the date, time and location are still kept under wraps. No doubt there is a stack of FOIA requests on this one.

So why release these videos without supporting documentation, and when will we see the third? We don’t know.

The Washington Post wrote: “Elizondo, in an internal Pentagon memo requesting that the videos be cleared for public viewing, argued that the images could help educate pilots and improve aviation safety. But in interviews, he said his ultimate intention was to shed light on a little-known program Elizondo himself ran for seven years…”

Luis Elizondo

(Credit: To the Stars Academy)

This seems to imply Elizondo was able to get the videos released under false pretense. However, I have been told that this statement by The Washington Post is inaccurate, and this is not how the videos got released. Well then, how did he get permission to release them, and what was the rationale behind it? We do not know.

There are a host of other questions. What other cases did AATIP look into? Do they have more video? Are these three the best they have? How many cases did they investigate and how many remain unknown? Even more exciting, how many of these objects do they believe exhibit technology much more advanced than what we Americans, or humans for that matter, have?

Then there is the case of the mysterious metals. The New York Times wrote: “Under Mr. Bigelow’s direction, the company modified buildings in Las Vegas for the storage of metal alloys and other materials that Mr. Elizondo and program contractors said had been recovered from unidentified aerial phenomena.”

WTF? Were these metals analyzed? If so, by whom and what did they find? If the phenomena that produced these metals are still unexplained, does that imply any analysis done thus far was inconclusive? What sort of properties do these metals have? Are they extraordinary? This is kind of a big deal, but we have no answers, and the media is not even asking these questions…yet.

Does this tweet by Tom DeLonge, President and CEO of TTSA, posted two days before The New York Times article, have anything to do with these metals?

After mentioning the metals, The New York Times continued, “Researchers also studied people who said they had experienced physical effects from encounters with the objects and examined them for any physiological changes.”

Physiological changes? Did they find any?

The phrase “who said they had” implies this may have been just anecdotal in nature. This brings to mind a recent case where this claim was made in a long and wild story of a man by the name of John Burroughs, who says he came close to a UFO that appeared to land in a forest outside a base in the UK on lease to the United States Air Force. At the time, he was working security at the base and along with others, approached the object. Years later, in a declassified study on UFOs done by the British government, it was speculated that these men might have suffered some physical effects from the object.

Burroughs did have health issues he believed stemmed from this incident and had to hire a lawyer to get veterans benefits. Incidentally, Burroughs’ efforts lead him to discover the section in the classified UK report that referred to his encounter and other yet to be released UK UFO files despite the fact that the UK had claimed to had released all of their UFO files. For his research, John Burroughs was awarded the UFO researcher of the year award at the 2015 International UFO Congress. DeLonge won that very award in 2017, and his video acceptance went viral early last year. You can read more about Burroughs’ efforts here.

The reason I went off on this tangent is because this case is well known. Is this the case that is being referred to in regards to studying “people who said they had experienced physical effects?”

It feels like we learned a lot in the last few weeks. The media seems to have boiled it all down to the idea that the government has taken UFOs seriously and perhaps it is a more credible topic than previously thought. That is a good takeaway.

However, there are many more questions that need to be answered, and it is likely more revelation will be forthcoming. I would venture to guess some of those revelations will be coming very soon.

Do you have some questions I did not include here? If so, let us know what they are below.

World Fly-In Expo in China: Drones Steal the Show

World Fly-In Expo in China: Drones Steal the Show

By: Nidhi Goyal

World Fly-In Expo

Image by tran dung on Youtube

The first-ever World Fly-In Expo was held recently in the central Chinese city of Wuhan. The air sports extravaganza was co-hosted by the FAI, the world governing body for air sports, and the Aero Sport Federation of China.

This global aviation event featured hundreds of aircraft, including jets, helicopters, hot-air balloons, auto-gyros, and ultra-light planes. More than 1000 pilots, athletes, coaches and referees from 37 countries participated in this mega event organized by the Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone.

Three big international competitions took place at the expo:

  1. The China International Hot Air Balloon Tournament
  2. The International Para-motor Invitational Championship
  3. The International Skydiving Championship

Another highlight of the event was the creation of a new Guinness World Record, involving 100 hot air balloon weddings.

But the stars of the event were the drones

Chinese-made remote-controlled flying machines stole the show. The drones drew massive crowds at exhibition booths.  The tiny propeller-driven flying machines performed in tight formation, high above the ground and competed with each other in events like delivering parcels and spraying plumes of mock pesticide.

Theory of Evolution in Extraterrestrials? Makes sense?

Theory of Evolution in Extraterrestrials? Makes sense?

end-time-2310776_1920.jpg
After reading this news from the Public Newspaper, in which scientists used Evolution Theory to explain what life forms would look like on other planets, I have to say that I agree in part with what has been described.

I agree that extraterrestrial life forms do not have to be based on a human model, ie head exchange, and members, nor have the same atomic constitution. The forms of alien lives may have another type of physiognomy and atomic constitution.
For me, they can even have a physical form and be what we consider spiritual entities.
I do not agree with the Theory of Evolution in this respect, just as I do not agree with it in our world. Creationism has a view, in my opinion, smarter than the facts and arguments that make the most sense to me.
Why this? Imagine you have all the ingredients of a cake in a closet. Suddenly there is an explosion and all those ingredients are scattered. However, they began to mix until they were a homogeneous mixture and with the heat of the explosion they baked and made a beautiful chocolate cake. Do you believe that?
Of course not? You know that it is impossible, in the same way, I believe it is impossible that after an explosion such as the Big Bang, carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur, have gathered and mixed by taking advantage of the heat of explosion to become life.
It's too complex so everything has happened from an explosion. How would life come from a primordial soup? Have you ever seen some chickens come out of your chicken soup? Should not you leave as there are molecules of the bird and are receiving heat?
From this, extraterrestrial species cannot originate from a cellular evolution, but from a careful process of creation, such as the whole Universe. Because it is impossible that the whole Universe has arisen with all this order by the simple chance of an explosion.
Of course, you may disagree with me, my opinion is based on theories and fruit of what makes sense to me. For others, my opinion will no longer make sense and I just have to respect it.

The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, a brief history

The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, a brief history

screenshot-1.jpg

Is there anybody out there? If we don't listen for the answer, we certainly won't hear it. Over at the Planetary Society, Jason Davis posted an excellent survey of the past, present, and future of the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. It begins in 1959 with Giuseppe Cocconi and Philip Morrison's historic paper "Searching for Interstellar Communications" and Frank Drake's Project Ozma, the first scientific SETI search:

One year later, the National Academy of Sciences hosted an invitation-only meeting at Green Bank to discuss how to go about conducting further SETI research. The eclectic, interdisciplinary group included Drake, Cocconi, Morrison, the biochemist Melvin Calvin (who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry during the meeting), Bernard Oliver, who was the vice president of research and development at Hewlett-Packard, the young Carl Sagan, and the scientist John Lilly, who had recently published a controversial book arguing dolphins were an intelligent species.

With a nod to Lilly's book, the participants dubbed themselves "The Order of the Dolphin." One product of the meeting was the Drake equation, which attempts to predict the number of advanced civilizations in the Milky Way able to contact Earth. The equation includes variables such as average star formation rate, the number of habitable planets per star, and the number of planets where intelligent life could evolve.

For the rest of the 1960s, SETI research remained mostly dormant, aside from a few searches in the Soviet Union. Starting in 1971, two Project Ozma follow-ups named Ozpa and Ozma II used bigger dishes and listened to more stars.

In 1973, another SETI search began, using a radio telescope called Big Ear at Ohio State University. Big Ear was a flat, aluminum dish three football fields wide, with reflectors at both ends.

On the night of August 15, 1977, Big Ear picked up a signal from the constellation Sagittarius that was 30 times stronger than the cosmic background noise, right at the 1,420 megahertz hydrogen line frequency. No one noticed it for a few days, until a volunteer sifting through the previous week's data circled the signal and wrote "Wow!" in the margin.

Jill Tarter is a legendary SETI scientist. She's the Bernard Oliver Chair for SETI at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California, and is the inspiration for protagonist Ellie Arroway in Contact, played by Jodie Foster in the film adaptation.

Tarter told me Big Ear's automated search program had no built-in logic to stop and focus on the Wow! signal. Furthermore, there was no confirmation system such as a second telescope located elsewhere, which could help determine whether the signal was local to Earth or truly from the stars.

Despite decades of follow-up searches, the Wow! signal was never heard again. To this day, Tarter favors SETI programs that can process data in real time, rapidly follow-up on detections, and rule out local interference.

I asked her if the Wow! signal still haunts the SETI field. "Well, it haunts me," she said.

Animaux (vols d'oiseaux, Hibous Grand Duc, etc.)

Conclusion.

[discussion venant après la conclusion.]
