Hurrah, NASA's sending another robot to Mars!
InSight is scheduled to touch down on Mars today (Nov. 26) at 3 p.m. ET, joining Mars' other robotic inhabitants: Curiosity, Opportunity and Spirit (though only Curiosity is currently "live," sending signals back to Earth).
You may be wondering if InSight will meet native forms of life during its stay on Mars; alas, that question will remain unanswered. The hardy little lander won't be spending its time searching for signs of Martian microbes. Instead, InSight will send a probe to burrow several feet below the planet's surface.
In doing so, InSight will provide a never-before-seen glimpse into Mars' internal structure, which could help scientists figure out how Mars — and other rocky planets, like Earth — took shape in a young solar system. [Mars Insight Photos: A Timeline to Landing on the Red Planet]
On the surface, Mars is covered in red dust that is rich in iron oxide; this coating earned it the nickname "Red Planet." Even when viewed from Earth without a telescope, Mars appears reddish in color as it hangs amid the stars — in fact, its bloody appearance inspired ancient astronomers to name the planet after the Roman god of war, according to NASA.
However, this signature red color doesn't extend very far below the surface, as Curiosity discovered in 2013. After drilling about 2.5 inches (6.4 centimeters) into a rocky outcrop, the rover extracted rock dust that was light gray, offering a first look at subsurface material on Mars.
But InSight will explore far beyond that, sinking a "self-hammering" probe that will dig itself into the ground to a depth of 10 to 16 feet (3 to 5 meters), for experiments measuring how the rock in the planet's interior conducts heat. [NASA's InSight Mars Lander: Full Coverage]

Curiosity, Opportunity and Spirit have already provided scientists with a wealth of data on Mars from samples collected on the planet's surface, revealing the composition of its minerals and showing that the planet might have been capable of supporting life in the distant past. Orbiting satellites have also revealed important puzzle pieces about Mars' climate makeup and orbit, and have even detected what are thought to be flows of salty liquid water.
But unlike these other missions, InSight — Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport — will gather information from inside the planet. In addition to the burrowing subsurface probe, InSight also carries seismometers that will measure "marsquakes" — tiny vibrations triggered by planetary activity under the planet's crust. As these tremors travel through rock, they reveal the thickness and composition of the planet's internal layers, NASA officials explained in a statement.
By mapping what Mars looks like on the inside, the InSight mission could also help to explain the violent processes that shaped other rocky planets in the solar system at the same time, William "Bruce" Banerdt, a research scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and the principal investigator for InSight, said in a video statement.
"InSight is a mission to Mars, but it's much, much more than a Mars mission. In some sense, it's like a time machine — it's measuring the structure of Mars that was put in place 4.5 billion years ago," Banerdt said.
"By studying Mars, we'll be able to learn more about Earth, Venus, Mercury, even the moon, even exoplanets around other stars," he added.
NASA 'tried to DESTROY images of pyramids and statues' found on Mars by Curiosity Rover
THE MARS Curiosity Rover has unearthed images "statues" hidden in the rocks of the Red Planet which NASA has tried to "cover up", according to conspiracy theorists.
Ancient astronaut theorists – who believe aliens visited Earth in prehistoric times – have claimed to have spotted a range of religious icons, including a statue of Buddha and a cross.
Satellite imagery expert Joseph White says the Rover’s images have been tampered with in order to keep these statues from being discovered by the public.
Speaking to the History Channel as part of their Ancient Aliens series, he said: “They [NASA] do so much to destroy these images.
“Basically, what they do is resize them down so that the detail is all lost.”
Author David Childress said: “Certain structures on Mars may be completely related to structures here on Earth.
“On Mars, we have structures that look like pyramids. There are standing stones and Stonehenge-type structures on Mars.”
David also points out a "structure" on Mars which looks like a Sphinx, as well as an object shaped eerily like a sarcophagus.

Many of these unexplained objects have been spotted in an area known as The City, including a cluster of pyramids similar to the ones found in Egypt.
These pyramid-like mounds follow a similar pattern to the constellation of stars called the Pleiades – a constellation reflected in monuments on Earth.
On the topic, author Giorgio A. Tsoukalos said: “We have to ask ourselves ‘what civilisation built this and what happened to them?”

BOLDLY GOING Two briefcase-sized satellites, shown side by side in this artist’s rendering, will become the first tiny spacecraft to fly by Mars and act as communications relays for a lander.

The next spacecraft set to land on Mars is bringing its own communications team. InSight, a lander scheduled to touch down on the Red Planet on November 26, is accompanied by a pair of briefcase-sized spacecraft that will send details of the landing to Earth in almost real time.
The twin craft on this mission are CubeSats — tiny, inexpensive satellites that are easy to build and launch. CalledMars Cube One, or MarCO for short, they will fly past Mars as InSight lands, becoming the smallest spacecraft ever to be entrusted with a task as crucial as relaying landing information for a mission. Now nearing Mars, they are also already the first CubeSats to make it so far from Earth. If all goes well with InSight’s landing, future Mars missions could also be equipped with their own single-use comms team.
“A future where landers and rovers brought their own communications systems for landing, that would be fantastic,” says engineer Joel Krajewski of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., and MarCO’s program manager.
InSight — short for Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport — will carry the first seismometer to Mars (SN: 5/26/18, p. 13). After touching down in a wide, flat plain called Elysium Planitia near Mars’ equator, the lander will sit perfectly still to listen to seismic waves and measure how heat flows through the Red Planet’s interior. The results will help scientists understand how Mars, and perhaps other rocky planets like Earth, formed around 4.5 billion years ago.
It will be only 6½ minutes between when InSight enters the Martian atmosphere, at a speed of nearly 1,000 meters per second, to the moment its legs touch the ground. The spacecraft will use a parachute and rockets aimed at the ground to slow to about 2.4 meters per second as it lands. Light-speed signals from the CubeSats or Insight itself will then take about eight minutes to travel between Earth and Mars, so by the time NASA engineers hear that InSight has entered Mars’ atmosphere, the spacecraft will be on the ground.
“Which is terrifying,” says engineer Farah Alibay, also of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. “Whether it landed softly or pretty hard, we won’t know. But we’ll know when you get that first bit of data, InSight’s already landed.”

For most previous Mars landings, one of the large orbiters currently circling the Red Planet had to pause its data-taking to watch the event and send details to Earth. The orbiter that will be in the best position to watch InSight will be NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. While that spacecraft will observe the landing, it won’t be able to relay any details to Earth for at least three hours as its orbit takes the craft behind Mars from Earth’s point of view, blocking communications.
“Three to four hours is not long for most people, but it’s pretty long for us,” Alibay says. “Landing is the scariest part of your mission.” Waiting to hear about the spacecraft’s landing is like waiting for news about a loved one’s health, she says.
To avoid that waiting, the team sent the twin CubeSats. The spacecraft launched with InSight, but have been navigating through deep space on their own since May. The MarCO craft can change their trajectories by expelling compressed cold gas, similar to the way a fire extinguisher works — which earned them the nicknames Wall-E and Eve among the team, after the space-flying Disney robot characters. “We’ve demonstrated that a CubeSat can leave Earth orbit, survive the harsh environment of space and direct itself towards Mars,” Alibay says.
About five minutes before InSight hits the top of the Martian atmosphere, the two MarCO craft will position themselves to track the lander all the way to the ground, and send details back to Earth immediately. Each operates independently, backing each other up.
If all goes well, MarCO could set a precedent for future Mars missions. Existing Mars orbiters will be able to support two Mars missions launching in 2020 — NASA’s Mars 2020 rover and the ExoMars rover run by the European Space Agency and Russia’s space agency. But after that, the future is dim.
“Right now, there’s not an active plan for an orbiter beyond that time frame,” Krajewski says. Plus, existing orbiters have to burn fuel to get into the right position to watch other spacecraft land, which shortens the orbiters’ lives. Sending future spacecraft with their own CubeSat comms team could help scientists monitor landings without compromising the big orbiters’ science missions.
After InSight lands, MarCO’s job will be done. The tiny craft don’t have enough fuel or the right equipment to enter a long-term orbit around Mars. Instead, MarCO will “wave goodbye and continue along,” Krajewski says.
A RIVER RAN THROUGH IT The next NASA Mars rover will land at Jezero crater, a former lake bed that includes the remains of an ancient river delta (seen above in this composite image from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter).

The next NASA Mars rover will hunt for signs of ancient life in what used to be a river delta, the agency announced on November 19.
The rover is expected to launch in July 2020 and to land on Mars around February 18, 2021. It will seek out signs of past life in the sediments and sands of Jezero crater, which was once home to a 250-meter-deep lake and a river delta that flowed into the lake.
“This is a major attraction from our point of view for a habitable environment,” said Mars 2020 project scientist Ken Farley of Caltech in a news conference discussing the site. “A delta is extremely good at preserving biosignatures.” Any evidence of life that may once have existed in the lake water, or even evidence that came from the river’s headwaters and flowed downstream, could be preserved in the rocks that are there today.
The 2020 rover’s design is similar to that of the Curiosity rover, which has been exploring a different ancient crater lake, Gale crater, since 2012 (SN: 5/2/15, p. 24). But where Curiosity has an onboard chemistry lab for studying the rocks and minerals in its crater, Mars 2020 will have a specialized backpack for sample storage. A future mission will pick up the cached samples and return them to Earth for more detailed study, possibly sometime in the 2030s.
“The samples will come back to the best labs — not the best labs we have today, but the best labs we will have then,” said science mission directorate administrator Thomas Zurbuchen of NASA headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Mars 2020 will also use a souped-up version of Curiosity’s landing system called Sky Crane, in which a hovering platform lowers the rover onto the ground with a cable. Mars 2020’s version will include a navigation system that will help it avoid hazards on the ground, like cliff faces and boulders.
Jezero crater is within striking distance of another site on scientists’ wish list. That region, called Midway, is just 28 kilometers away from Jezero and contains some of the most ancient rocks on Mars. At the final landing site selection workshop in October, scientists floated the idea of visiting both sites in one mission, a feat seen as ambitious but achievable. But a decision on that will have to wait until after the rover is safely on Mars, Farley said.
A group of Chinese researchers recruited couples in order to create the first gene-edited babies — a pair of twin girls born earlier this month. The controversial initiative aims to make babies resistant to certain diseases and pathogens, such as HIV infections.
The news was first reported by MIT Technology Review, which obtained official medical documents (1 and 2) filed by researchers at the Southern University of Science and Technology, in Shenzhen.
According to the documents, the Chinese researchers want to use the gene-editing tool CRISPR to modify human embryos and then transfer them into women’s uteruses. They plan to edit the CCR5 gene in such a way as to potentially make the offspring resistant to HIV, smallpox, and cholera. Using the

Although gene editing on humans is prohibited in most countries (China has banned cloning but not human embryo gene editing specifically), He and colleagues seem nevertheless bent on experimenting with gene editing and human cells. The major concern is that any edits will be passed on to offspring, thus making their way into the gene pool. As such, potentially troublesome mutations could become relatively widespread. On the other hand, even if the gene editing process is flawless, any beneficial gene edits — such as enhanced resistance to disease and even intelligence — could result in unfair advantages and may open the door for eugenic practices.

It’s all uncharted territory, and the long-term consequences of gene editing on humans can be unpredictable, which is why the scientific community advises caution. In stark contrast to this cautionary approach, He claimed that his team has “a strong responsibility that it’s not just to make a first, but also make it an example.”
He says that the aim of the trial is not to cure or prevent an inherited disease, but rather to bestow traits that few people naturally have. Specifically, the ability to resist an infection with HIV, which some individuals from Western European populations have due to a rare CCR5 genetic mutation. This gene forms a protein doorway that allows HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, to enter a cell; the mutation alters this doorway, physically blocking the virus from entering the cell.
According to the Associated Press, the Chinese researchers have altered embryos for seven couples during fertility treatments, with one pregnancy being carried to term thus far. All the men involved in the trial had HIV, while the women did not. This claim, however, is unverified, and the work has yet to be published in any journal.

The gene editing occurred during the lab dish fertilization (IVF) stage. The researchers first separated sperm from semen, the fluid which may contain HIV. A single sperm cell was joined with a single egg to form an embryo, which was subjected to gene editing via CRISPR. Once the embryos were 3 to 5 days old, some cells were removed and checked for editing. Overall, the Chinese researchers edited 16 of 22 embryos, out of which 11 embryos were used in six implant attempts, resulting in a single twin pregnancy. The couples could choose whether to use edited or unedited embryos for their pregnancy attempts.
Tests suggest that one twin had both copies of the altered gene and the other twin had just one altered copy. There was no evidence that suggests harm to other genes, according to He. People with only one copy of the CCR5 gene can still get HIV. Further pregnancies are on hold until the twin pregnancy is deemed safe.
Others say it could be a manmade UFO, such as a spy plane.
The news comes after apparent UFO sightings in Northern Ireland this month.

NASA’s Future Spaceships Will Travel At 1 Million Miles Per Hour
NASA could be on the verge of a breakthrough. Currently, NASA is working on an advanced propulsion engine, that if cracked, can elevate our space travel to the next level. For decades, spacecraft have been stuck traveling at low chemical speeds, limiting our ability to research and explore space. However, now speeds of over one million miles per hour before 2050 are possible. The NASA institute for Advanced Concepts (NIAC) is funding two high potential concepts.
There are new ion drives being developed right now that could have power levels that are tens thousand times higher. Antimatter propulsion and multi-megawatt ion drives are being developed. The current speeds of spacecraft are quite low in space terms. The Voyager 1 spacecraft is moving at 38,000 mph (61,000 km/h).
This speed was achieved mostly by a chemical rocket but also with the assistance of gravity, using it to slingshot the spacecraft out of orbit. Juno, Helios I and Helios II managed to reach speeds of around 150,000 mph using gravitational boosts also. The recently launched Parker Solar Probe will reach 430,000 mph using the Sun’s gravity.
Gravitational boosts are our current best way of achieving higher speeds for our spacecraft. However, this method is also detrimental to our research and exploration as it takes a lot of time to work. It can take many months before the desired speed is achieved and the real mission starts.
The new methods will use 50000 ISP lithium ion thrusters, the first of which will be tested in 4 months. This is part of a NASA NIAC phase 2 study to use lasers to beam 10 megawatts of power into new ion drivers. The recent progress of lasers is largely unknown to the public.
The US military is developing lasers that can produce a whopping 100 kilowatts within the next two years.
Laser beam powered ion drives will be up to ten times faster than any previous ion drive. A spacecraft with this technology would take less than a year to get to Pluto.
Jet Propulsion Lab is building and ironing out the many components used in this system. The sail and the ion drives are finally coming together. The hardest part will be creating and sustaining the phased array lasers.
Testing voltage will be boosted up to 6000 volts. This will allow the ion drives to be directly driven, which eliminates the need for a lot of electronics and weight. These type of ion drives do have many technical challenges, but predictions show a well-funded project could be successful before 2040.

Pas als de InSight met drie poten op de rode grond staat, is het eerste deel van de missie geslaagd. Iedereen die betrokken is bij het internationale project, houdt de adem in. Ook onze Belgische Koninklijke Sterrenwacht (Lees ook: Belg weet als eerste of het lukt, red). De afdaling van InSight, een compleet laboratorium dat de komende twee jaar inzicht moet verschaffen in de diepste geheimen van Mars, is niet bepaald simpel. Het kostbare apparaat komt met een snelheid van bijna 20.000 kilometer per uur de ijle atmosfeer van Mars binnen. In minder dan zeven minuten moet het ruimtetuig van die duizelingwekkende snelheid zien af te remmen naar bijna nul. De vluchtleiding op aarde kan slechts toekijken, ingrijpen is onmogelijk.
APHet onderzoek van InSight zal de opmars zijn naar bemande kolonies op de planeet.
Helse afdaling
De capsule waarin InSight zijn helse afdaling richting het oppervlak maakt, lijkt op die waarmee in de jaren zestig en zeventig ook de maanmissies terugkeerden: een conische vorm, met daaronder een gladde vlakke bodem. De onderkant van de lander is van cruciaal belang om InSight te beschermen tegen de enorme hitte die ontstaat bij het binnendringen van de Mars-atmosfeer. Afgezien van het hitteschild is ook de hoek waarin de landingscapsule de atmosfeer van Mars raakt, uiterst belangrijk. Die hoek moet exact 12 graden zijn. Is de hoek te klein, dan kaatst InSight af en duikt het de diepten van het heelal in. Is de hoek te groot, dan gaat de sonde door de wrijving met de lucht als een razende vuurbal ten onder. En de missie letterlijk in rook op.
APDe capsule waarin InSight afdaalt op Mars lijkt sterk op die van de Apollo-missien in de jaren zeventig.
Loodrecht omlaag
Ongeveer drieënhalve minuut nadat de capsule de Mars-atmosfeer raakt, gaat een parachute open die het ruimtevaartuig verder afremt. Vijftien seconden later blazen explosieven het hitteschild weg en maakt InSight zich op voor de daadwerkelijke landing. Na tien seconden strekt de sonde drie poten uit en bungelt nog een minuut of twee onder de parachute. 45 seconden voor de landing verlaat InSight de capsule en nemen zijn landingsraketten het laatste remwerk over. De boosters stoppen ook elke horizontale beweging van InSight, waardoor het ding uiteindelijk loodrecht omlaag komt. Komt InSight na intrede en afdaling met een vaart hoger dan 8 kilometer per uur op het oppervlak terecht, dan is het alsnog einde oefening. De sonde slaat te pletter en de missie is mislukt nog voor hij kan echt beginnen. Acht minuten na de, hopelijk geslaagde, landing komt het verlossende levensteken van InSight op Aarde aan.
De plek waar de InSight gaat landen, Elysium Planitia, is een kale vlakte net boven de evenaar van Mars. De vluchtleiding hoopt dat er weinig rotsen zijn of stenen liggen die een zachte landing kunnen dwarsbomen. Dat voor het weinig interessante landschap is gekozen, heeft nog een reden: het is InSight niet te doen om het oppervlak, zoals zijn voorgangers, maar om de binnenkant van Mars.
AFPAls alles goed gaat, komt InSight met een gangetje van 8 kilometer per uur neer op Mars.
Metersdiep boren
InSight gaat metersdiep in de bodem van Mars boren, zodat wetenschappers kunnen leren wat er onder het oppervlak zit en inzicht kunnen krijgen in de geschiedenis van de rode planeet. Dat boren gaat eenvoudiger op een ondergrond die waterpas staat. Doordat er geen schaduwen zijn, kunnen de zonnepanelen van de lander bovendien meer energie opwekken.
Een tweede taak van InSight is het registreren van bevingen op Mars. Het vermoeden is dat die bevingen er wel zijn, alleen anders dan op Aarde. Mars heeft geen tektonische platen zoals onze planeet, maar onderzoekers denken de komende jaren toch tientallen tot honderden bevingen waar te kunnen nemen. Ook die trillingen kunnen iets vertellen over het binnenste van Mars.
Met het oog op toekomstige bemande Marsmissies is het ook belangrijk om te leren wat de temperatuur op een bepaalde diepte is. Als de temperatuur onder het oppervlak warm genoeg is, zou water er in vloeibare vorm aanwezig kunnen zijn. Tot nu toe werd altijd aangenomen dat water slechts als ijs voorkomt. Vloeibaar water zou een verblijf op Mars aanzienlijk eenvoudiger maken.
APInSight gaat metersdiep de marsbodem inboren om de rode planeet te ontfutselen zijn geheimen te ontfutselen.
Maankolonie
NASA zet komend jaar de eerste stappen voor het stichten van een maankolonie. Een nieuw ruimtestation, The Gateway, moet als uitvalsbasis gaan dienen voor de eerste bewoners die ergens rond 2030 voet op de maan zullen zetten. De maankolonie kan de opmars zijn naar een kolonie op Mars, zoals techmiljardair Elon Musk graag wil. Een groot deel hangt af van wat InSights aan het licht gaat brengen. Mits hij veilig landt natuurlijk.

NASA, dat in de jaren zestig de planeet al aandeed met de Mariner-missies, heeft overigens behoorlijk wat ervaring als het aankomt op Mars. Toch is het alweer zes jaar geleden dat de ruimtevaartorganisatie de rijdende verkenner Curiosity Rover op Marsiaanse bodem wist te zetten. Het succespercentage van sondes om heelhuids te landen, ligt op 40 procent.
Mars is vooral een waar kerkhof van mislukte missies. Diverse ruimtevaartorganisaties, waaronder naast Amerikaanse en Russische ook Europese, Indiase en Japanse bureaus, stuurden de afgelopen decennia 44 sondes naar Mars. Daarvan waren er 18 succesvol, met zeven geslaagde landingen. 23 missies mislukten en drie haalden wel de planeet zelf, maar faalden bij de landing.

Jiankui benadrukt dat hij de controversiële ingreep enkel voor gezondheidsredenen wil toepassen. Als dit waar is, gaat het om een enorme evolutie in wetenschap en ethiek.
De Chinese wetenschapper zette een filmpje op YouTube waarin hij aankondigde dat de eerste gemanipuleerde kindjes al geboren zijn. In de video zegt hij dat de vader van de bewuste meisjes, Mark, hiv heeft. Dankzij de genetische aanpassing die Jiankui met zijn team doorvoerde bij de embryo’s tijdens de vruchtbaarheidsbehandelingen, zijn de baby’s nu zelf resistent tegen het hiv-virus.
De ingreep gebeurde met de veelbelovende en erg precieze CRISPR-techniek. Die laat toe om een enkel ongewenst gen door te knippen en te vervangen door een ander gen. In het geval van de tweeling was het de bedoeling om te voorkomen dat de meisjes ziek zouden worden door een mogelijke hiv-besmetting. Maar de ethisch omstreden techniek zou ook kunnen gebruikt worden om een zogenaamde designerbaby samen te stellen. Dan kan je als ouder de kleur van ogen en van haar kiezen, tot zelfs het niveau van intelligentie. Van die mogelijke toepassingen distantieert He Jiankui zich uitdrukkelijk in het filmpje.
Het is koffiedik kijken of de beweringen van He Jiankui kloppen. Er is nog geen gepubliceerde studie van de case en dus ook geen onafhankelijke controle van andere experts. De ouders wensen niet in de pers te komen en blijven anoniem. De aankondiging gebeurde in Hong Kong aan de vooravond van een internationaal congres over genetische manipulatie. Ze analyseerden de genetische ‘barcodes’ van vijf miljoen dieren en kwamen tot de conclusie dat de mensheid is voortgekomen uit twee volwassenen na een catastrofe waarbij bijna alle soorten uitstierven.

De wetenschappers, Mark Stoeckle en David Thaler, concludeerden dat 90 procent van alle diersoorten die vandaag de dag leven, zo’n 250.000 jaar geleden tegelijkertijd is ontstaan.
Ze trekken daarmee de menselijke evolutie in twijfel.
“Deze conclusie is erg verrassend en ik heb er zo hard tegen gestreden als ik maar kon,” zei Thaler.

Voici quelques images brutes d’un OVNI qui sort tout droit du ciel au-dessus de la Californie cette semaine. L’OVNI brille de mille feux et descend lentement du ciel. Au début, il ressemble à un météore, mais sa chute est trop lente pour en être un. Des images déconcertantes, c’est le moins que l’on puisse dire. Le fait est que deux ovnis existent et se succèdent, donc ils veillent l’un sur l’autre. Une sorte de copilote, comme ils l’ont fait dans l’US / Navy pour les pilotes afin de les tenir à l’écart des ennuis. Manifestement contrôlé intelligemment.

HOW AND WHERE TO WATCH NASA'S INSIGHT FINALLY LAND ON MARS
ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 26th, following a six-month journey across hundreds of millions of miles of deep space, NASA’s InSight spacecraft will arrive at Mars in suitably dramatic fashion, hitting the top of the planet’s atmosphere at 12,300 miles per hour—several times faster than a speeding bullet—shortly before 12:00 pm PST (3:00 pm EST).
If all goes as planned, it will take InSight (short for Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy, and Heat Transport) just seven minutes to decelerate completely and alight on Mars’ surface. The planet’s atmosphere will do a lot of the work, aided in turn by InSight’s parachute, descent thrusters, and shock-absorbing legs. If NASA can pull it off, it will be the agency’s eighth successful landing on the red planet.
NASA and others will be broadcasting news of InSight’s approach, entry, descent, and landing all day long. Here are the best places to keep tabs on Monday’s proceedings in person and online.

Tune in here Monday to catch two live feeds from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. The first will feature live interviews with mission experts between 3:00 am and 7:00 am PST (6:00—10:00 am EST), followed by live landing commentary and news briefings from scientists and engineers between 11:00 am and 12:30 pm PST (2—3:30 pm EST). The second will be an uninterrupted feed of cameras from inside JPL Mission Control, featuring mission audio only, during the same time window. Notification of the landing is expected to arrive at Mission control around noon PST, but if communication with the spacecraft is delayed, NASA might not know InSight’s status for hours or even days. For this reason, the agency has penciled in a post-landing news conference for no earlier than 2:00 pm PST.

The term cloud iridescence – aka irisation – comes from Iris, the Greek personification of the rainbow. True iridescent clouds are relatively rare. Here’s what causes them.

Sky watchers often report seeing rainbow colors in clouds. There are various kinds ofhalosand colored arcsand even truerainbowsyou might see associated with clouds, but – if the rainbow-like colors are randomly distributed, and if the sun is nearby – what you’re seeing is likely an iridescent cloud.
These sorts of clouds are caused by especially tiny ice crystals or water droplets in the air. Larger ice crystals produce lunar or solar halos, but tiny ice crystals or water droplets cause light to be diffracted – spread out – creating this rainbow-like effect in the clouds.

Our friend Dave Walker in the UK caught another iridescent cloud in 2013. He wrote, “There’s been a lot of very high cloud recently, always a cue for me to look out for more atmospheric optics.”
The best way to see an iridescent cloud is to place the sun itself behind some foreground object, a building or mountain, for example. Other aids are dark glasses, or observing the sky reflected in a convex mirror or in a pool of water. EarthSky Facebook friend Duke Marsh captured this image in 2012 in New Albany, Indiana.

Bottom line: You might on occasion see a rainbow-like cloud. They’re fairly rare, but people do spot them, and we sometimes receive photos of them. They’re caused by the presence of very tiny ice crystals or water droplets in the air, which cause light to be diffracted (spread out).
Sprawled out across a portion of the northern Mojave Desert of California, in the United States, is the magnificent yet forbidding moonscape that is Death Valley. This is one of the hottest, most inhospitable places on the planet, boasting the highest ground temperature ever recorded on earth at 201 °F (93.9 °C), and in general a sun-scorched wasteland, devoid of water and pounded by relentless sun and heat. It is so inhospitable that it might as well be the surface of some remote, lifeless planet, and it is not called Death Valley for nothing. Yet, for how totally uninhabitable it may seem there have long been Native tribes living in this extreme land for thousands of years, and it some reports are to be believed there is even a mysterious lost civilization that lived under it all.
The tribe most associated with the Death Valley region is the Paiute, who like many other tribes throughout the world have their particular legends and myths about the land they inhabit. For the Paiute one of the most intriguing is that of a great underground city they call Shin-au-av, meaning “God’s Land” or “Ghost Land.” According to the lore, there was once a great chief who lost his wife to the clutches of death. Unable to cope without her, this chief took a journey to the land of spirits, during which he found himself in a vast subterranean world. In this land he was attacked by horrific monsters, which he barely managed to fend off as he retreated, finally crossing a rock bridge and coming to a peaceful land ruled by a chief called Shin-au-av.
Death Valley
This was apparently a land of lush green meadows, sweeping valleys, and dancing, happy people, and the chief who had stumbled across this magical place realized that is was a land of spirits, possibly even harboring his dead wife. He even asked if his wife was there, and one of his guides said that she indeed was, and that she would be presented to him with the caveat that he whisk her away as soon as possible without looking back. The chief was elated, but after waiting several days she did not materialize. He was about to give up but then she appeared and he did as promised, taking her by the hand and leading her across that stone bridge back to the land of the living, but he broke his pact by looking once more onto that sumptuous realm of green and his wife subsequently faded away once again. The heartbroken chief made his way back to his village, but he was never the same again, and his tale of that amazing underground domain became the stuff of legends.
Whether this fantastic fable is based in any way in reality or not, there have actually been explorers and adventurers who seem to have stumbled across this seemingly mythical place buried under the harsh hellscape of the Death Valley above, and whether connected to this legend or not there have been many who have claimed to have found something quite odd there under the parched earth. One of the earliest such accounts comes from the early 1900s, when two men named White and Thomason were said to have been hiking through Death Valley and one of them allegedly fell through the ground into an old mine shaft at a place called Wingate Pass.
It turned out that there underground was a gigantic cavern that they claim to have followed for 20 miles beneath the earth, where it penetrated out under the Panamint Mountains. According to them, this meandering, expansive cavern emptied out into a vast and ancient subterranean city, which had long since been abandoned but which still held much evidence of its past residents. White and Thomason said that they found perfectly preserved mummies wearing leather clothing and gold jewelry down there in the dank depths, as well as gold spears, a polished stone round table of some sort, golden statues, and just generally gold lying all over the place, as well as countless gemstones. Throughout all of it was an intricate lighting system that they speculated harnessed natural gases, and immense stone doors that seemed to have once been operated with elaborate mechanical systems.
The men claimed to have taken some of the treasure and relics out of there so that they could be studied, but that they had been subsequently stolen by an associate. They captured the attention of the Smithsonian Institute, and promised that they could show them where the entrance to this bizarre underground world was, but the men were unable to locate it again. Considering there is absolutely no evidence of these men’s claims, we are left to merely speculate as to how much truth any of it has.
In the 1920s there was another interesting account when a Native Guide named Tom Wilson came forward to claim that his prospector grandfather had also found some sort of underground city under Death Valley. Wilson said that his grandfather had followed a cave down into the earth, where he had come across a city of fair-skinned people living there underground, who spoke a language he could not understand and were decked out in leather clothing of some sort. This strange race had horses down there, and the whole city was lit up by some sort of lighting system he could not comprehend. Interestingly, Wilson would hear the earlier account of the explorer White and would go on to spend the rest of his life obsessively looking for the lost city without success until he passed away in 1968.
In 1947 the mysterious lost city of Death Valley captured the public imagination when a man named Howard E. Hill came forward with a rather bizarre tale of his own, which was circulated in the newspaper The San Diego Union. Hill told of a man named Dr. F. Bruce Russell and his colleague, an archeologist named Dr. Daniel S. Bovee. In 1931, Russell was claimed to have discovered a complex network of subterranean caves, which were stumbled across completely by accident while sinking for a mine shaft to make a claim on. The two men went on to explore these uncharted tunnels and found a series of spectacular caverns and catacombs down there in the gloom, which revealed some rather startling discoveries indeed.
According to the report, Russell and Bovee came across the mummified remains of three actual giants in the darkness, each measuring a purported 9 feet tall and wearing clothing that appeared to be jackets and knee length trousers made of some sort of unknown animal skin. The chamber that the giants were found in was allegedly full of relics that seemed to be some sort of mix of Egyptian and Native American design, and there were apparently hieroglyphics etched into the walls and ceiling. The men also found some sort of hall that they believed had been used for mysterious rituals, and within this hall were the remains of numerous animals presumably used for sacrifices, including both known and unknown animals, as well as the bones of extinct animals such as mammoths and even actual dinosaurs, as weird as that may seem.
Russell supposedly claimed that the remains were dated to be at least 80,000 years old, and that the whole complex meandered out into the unexplored dark for miles, with no telling what else lie within the unexplored murk. Although the two tried to get interest from the scientific community they were perhaps not surprisingly looked at with quite a bit of skepticism, with all of this talk of giant bones and dinosaur skeletons in an underground city. Yet they were apparently adamant that it was all real and that it was the discovery of the century. The two were finally able to draw some interest, but when they tried to find the entrance again they of course could not. Rather bizarrely, not long after this Dr. Russell and Bovee just suddenly vanished, and Russell’s car would supposedly be found abandoned in the desert of Death Valley several months later with no sign of its occupant.
There have been sporadic reports since of finding anomalous caverns and ruins down there in the earth below Death Valley, and we are left to wonder what it all means. Was there ever an ancient underground city here or is this all just myths and folklore? What of the findings of these explorers who have claimed to have been there? What is the significance of the mummies or the bones? 70 metal plates contain the earliest account of Jesus
The discovery of 70 metal plates in Jordan in 2008 describes the earliest account of Jesus, among many other references to the time 2000 years ago. The metal plates have now been confirmed as authentic...
In 2008, the authenticity of the 70 metal plates was questioned, but now the codicils have been analyzed and confirm that they are genuine and 2000 years old. The metal plates have been joined together and represent documents from this period. Particularly striking is the statement that Jesus did not establish a new teaching at all, but that he carried on the teachings of King David as a 1000-year-old tradition.
His intention was not to create a new religion, but rather to represent a God who is both male and female. The metal plates were in a large box made of stone bone and lead. The scientists Roger Webb and Chris Jeynes from the "Nodus Laboratory" of Surrey University tested the plates extensively and found that they were equivalent to a sample from an ancient Roman mine at the excavation site in Dorset. The language to be discovered on the metal plates is Paleo-Hebrew. They also mention the apostles Peter, John, James, and Jesus.
The authors Jennifer and David Elkington have revived interest in Jordanian codicils. They temporarily received the metal plates for further study. They attempted to largely translate and examine the text. They even discovered the face of Jesus surrounded by a halo. Webb and Jeynes also stated in their research that the many blogs that doubted the authenticity of the metal plates withdrew these hasty conclusions because they are now considered authentic. The symbols discovered on the metal plates show a clear correspondence with those of the Temple of Solomon.
The names Jesus and Simon were also discovered. Simon is associated with Simon bar Kokba, who led a rebellion against Rome at the time. The plates are probably from 137, but are probably copies of the originals that were made in earlier times. In addition to the text, there are pictures and symbols, most of which are associated with the temple in Jerusalem. The pictures depict seven-branched candlesticks, palm trees, eight-pointed stars, bowls with templefern and diagonal crosses as symbols of the early Christian period. Links to the secret Kabbalah script have also been identified, esoteric and mystical script interpretations. In addition, references to coded Bible texts about the sealed books of the Bible of Isaiah, Daniel, and Revelation.
Jesus is said to have even known female apostles by his side. Dr. Ziad Al Saad, the former director of the antique collection in Amman, regards the codicil as one of the most important finds of our time. He very much hopes that the codicils will be known throughout the world in the future.
David Elkington is a well-known researcher and says: "The main material is found in nine plates of this book and also describes the beginnings here on earth. The representations are very astronomical in nature with stars. There are three stars on it, like the Sun, which are relevant, with Earth-like planets on it."
He also found the Ra symbol in them. He is convinced that the sun depicted does not mean our sun. "It seems to me as if we were never alone in the universe and we are the offshoots of distant star visitors," he explains thoughtfully.

BREAKING: Complex Organic Molecules Discovered on Enceladus For The First Time

The plumes of salty water shooting out of Saturn's ocean moon Enceladus have just ponied up one of the most significant ingredients for habitability: large organic molecules rich in carbon.
It's a discovery that suggests a thin, organic rich film atop the oceanic water table - very similar to the sea surface microlayer here on Earth, which is extraordinarily rich in organic compounds.
And yes, you guessed it. These findings bolster the hypothesis that, deep under its icy crust, Enceladus could be harbouring simple marine life, clustered around the warmth of hydrothermal vents.
Previously, simple organic molecules detected on the little moon were under around 50 atomic mass units and only contained a handful of carbon atoms.
"We've found organic molecules with masses above 200 atomic mass units. That's over ten times heavier than methane.
"With complex organic molecules emanating from its liquid water ocean, this moon is the only body besides Earth known to simultaneously satisfy all of the basic requirements for life as we know it."
Let that sink in for a moment.
One might think that a moon far from the Sun with an ocean covered by a thick crust of ice would be an unlikely place to look for extraterrestrial life, but the case for it is mounting.
Last year, Cassini data revealed the presence of molecular hydrogen in the plumes shooting off the surface of Enceladus - a possible source of which would be the ocean's water reacting with rocks via hydrothermal processes.
That process has been observed here on Earth - around hydrothermal vents, volcanic apertures in the seafloor that spew heat into the surrounding water.
These terrestrial hydrothermal vents are often far from the life-giving light of the Sun, which triggers the photosynthesis on which the vast majority of Earth's life depends.
But the warmth from the vents allows a different process to take place - chemosynthesis. Bacteria around the vents harness chemical energy, such as the reaction between hydrogen sulfide from the vent and oxygen from the seawater, to produce sugar molecules - food.
"Hydrogen provides a source of chemical energy supporting microbes that live in Earth's oceans near hydrothermal vents," said physicist Hunter Waite of the Southwest Research Institute, principal investigator on the Cassini Ion and Neutral Mass Spectrometer.
"Once you have identified a potential food source for microbes, the next question to ask is 'what is the nature of the complex organics in the ocean?' This paper represents the first step in that understanding - complexity in the organic chemistry beyond our expectations!"
The molecules were also detected by Cassini, which sampled an Enceladus plume before it was decommissioned in September of last year.
It then used its Cosmic Dust Analyzer and Ion and Neutral Mass Spectrometer to take measurements, both of the plume and of Saturn's E ring - the planet's second outermost ring, within which Enceladus orbits. It's formed by particles escaping the moon's gravity.
It's possible that a future probe may be able to dive through the plumes, equipped with a high-resolution mass spectrometer, to analyse those molecules in greater detail, and with more advanced technology.
Meanwhile, researchers here on Earth are continuing to observe and experiment on hydrothermal vents in the hopes of advancing our understanding of what life on Enceladus might look like.
And there are a number of proposed missions to actually send a craft to the ice moon to investigate more closely the possibility of life - and maybe even find it. But sadly, none of those are in development yet, so any such mission would still be years away, if it happens at all.
But, based on what we're still continuing to learn from Cassini, the moon is only looking more and more intriguing.
"Even after its end," Glein said, "the Cassini spacecraft continues to teach us about the potential of Enceladus to advance the field of astrobiology in an ocean world."
The research has been published in the journal Nature.
Nasa's Mars InSight mission heads for '7 minutes of terror'

The American space agency Nasa will attempt to put another robotic probe on Mars later.
The InSight landeris being targeted at a flat plain just north of the planet's equator called Elysium Planitia.
It carries a suite of instruments - many of them from Europe - to try to determine the rocky world's internal structure.
Signals from the probe confirming its safe touchdown should be received at 19:53 GMT, give or take a minute.
As with previous surface missions, InSight must survive the "seven minutes of terror" - the time it takes for a probe entering Mars' thin atmosphere at hypersonic speed to slow to walking pace and gently put itself on the ground.
Many have tried; most have failed. "As humanity, as explorers - we're batting at less than 50%," said Nasa's science chief, Thomas Zurbuchen. "Going to Mars is really, really hard."
InSight has some heritage on its side. It will be using the exact same combination of heatshield, parachute and retro-rockets that proved so successful in positioning Nasa's Phoenix probe in Mars "Arctic" in 2007.
Engineers here at mission control on the Jet Propulsion Laboratory campus in California have a quiet confidence in the outcome as a result. That said, they are also very aware of the statistics.
"We've done all the preparations that we can possibly think of to make sure that our entry, descent and landing (EDL) goes as smoothly as we can imagine," explained project manager Tom Hoffman. "But Mars as a planet does not always behave. I think our team is ready; I think the spacecraft is ready. We just don't know if Mars is ready," he told BBC News.
What is the latest status?
The EDL engineers have been closely watching the weather on the Red Planet, looking especially for any dust storms and evidence of high winds that could complicate InSight's passage through the atmosphere.
The probe's trajectory was altered ever so slightly on Sunday, to ensure it is lined up perfectly with the targeted landing zone on Elysium Planitia.
There is very little now that Nasa teams can do to influence the outcome. The whole process is necessarily automated because commands take eight minutes to traverse the 146 million km distance between Mars and Earth. You cannot use a joystick to control a far-off probe.
InSight will transmit messages as it heads down to the surface. These will be relayed back to Earth via two small satellites flying overhead. Radio telescopes at Earth will also be tracking the probe's progress just in case the primary communications link falls over.
Assuming it lands in one piece, InSight is programmed to take a quick picture of its immediate surroundings. This could come back within the first 30 minutes on the surface.

What is different about this mission?
This will be the first probe to dedicate its investigations to understanding Mars' interior.
Scientists want to know how the world is constructed - from its core to its crust. InSight has three principal experiments to achieve this goal.
The first is a package of Franco-British seismometers that will be lifted on to the surface to listen for "Marsquakes". These vibrations will reveal where the rock layers are and what they are made of.
A German "mole" will burrow up to 5m into the ground to take the planet's temperature. This will give a sense of how active Mars still is.
And the third experiment will use radio transmissions to very precisely determine how the planet is wobbling on its axis. Deputy project scientist Suzanne Smrekar uses this analogy: "If you take a raw egg and a cooked egg and you spin them, they wobble differently because of the distribution of liquid in the interior. And today we really don't know if the core of Mars is liquid or solid, and how big that core is. InSight will give us this information."
Why do we need to know this?
Scientists understand very well how Earth's interior is structured, and they have some good models to describe the initiation of this architecture at the Solar System's birth more than 4.5 billion years ago. But Earth is one data point and Mars will give researchers a different perspective on how a rocky planet can be assembled and evolve through time.
InSight chief scientist Bruce Banerdt said: "The small details in how planets evolve are what we think make the difference between a place like Earth where you can go on vacation and get a tan, and a place like Venus where you'll burn in seconds or a place like Mars where you'll freeze to death."

Dmitry Rogozin responded to a question about whetherNasa’s Apollo programme actually put men on the moon back in the 1960s and 1970s during a conversation with the president of Moldova, Igor Dodon.
He appeared to be joking, as he smirked and shrugged while answering. But conspiracies surrounding Nasa's moon missions are common in Russia.
In a video of their interaction, posted to his 815,000 Twitter followers, Mr Rogozin says: “We have set this objective to fly and verify whether they’ve been there or not”.
Nasa’s six well-documented official manned missions to the surface of the Moon, beginning with astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin in July 1969 and continuing with Gene Cernan and Jack Schmitt in December 1972, have been dogged with conspiracy theories.
Vladimir Markin said an enquiry should be launched into the disappearance of original footage from the first moon landing in 1969 and the whereabouts of lunar rock, which was brought back to Earth during several missions.
The International Space Station (ISS) is about 254 miles above the Earth. The inner Van Allen Belt is about 400 miles above the Earth. The radiation levels in the Belts is deadly. The US moon landings were fake. The Russians won't be going to the moon. The Chinese won't be going to the moon. The US never went to the moon.

UFO streaking across the sky in front of a thunderstorm in Columbus, Ohio
The witness who reported the sighting to Mufon says that he observed lightning during a thunderstorm in Columbus, Ohio, which was only seen within the clouds. The clouds lit up several times during the video.
He says that he heard no sounds coming from the lightning and thought that it was unusual that the lightning was only seen within the clouds, and recorded the event.
During the recording some type of flying object can be seen streaking across the sky from left to right.
I noticed this object near the rover looks very similar in shape to a snail...like an old fossil of a Mars Ammonite from its ancient lakes or oceans. Here on Earth, Ammonites lived died out 66 million years ago, but lived as long ago as 200 million years ago. I believe that since it evolved on a different planet, its shape was effected by a different evolution involving different environmental influences. I'm confused at why the NASA rover didn't want to examine it more closely, since it was hovering over some rocks nearby for several days. It would be most interesting to have a paleontologist take a look at the object.

This video was taken in a UFO hotspot...Denver, Colorado just two days ago. Whats happening here is a drone UFO is creating a cloud tunnel for transportation purposes. The drone creates the tunnel and for some unknown reason the tunnels keep their shape for hours. UFOs will then use the tunnel to fly to the location s that they desire to go. At the end of the tunnel, where its being created, the object changed direction.
Yes, I personally witnessed four such cloud tunnels (side by side) back in 1989-90 in Rapid City, SD and watched the glowing balls of light appear at the tunnels beginning which just happened to be 1km above my parking lot...everyone going to their cars were staring up in awe. The lights appeared one at a time (3X bigger than a B1 bomber) then then the light rolled increased speed moving from slow to fast, faster, then gone...then another orb would appear in a different tunnel and do the same...there was also a rumbling as it moved...like a wooden cart being pulled over a cobblestone road. Saw over 25 in 20 minutes...before I had to leave to work at Ellsworth AFB flight line. Its a base with hundreds of nuclear silos that it controls, and lots of B-1 bombers which I worked on. No, the UFOs were not USAF. I knew everything going on there, even saw the nuclear attack plans made for presentations since I worked with the base commander. Awesome, but never saw it in the news, even though it was seen by thousands of residence.

If you’re at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, it sounds like winning the Super Bowl: cheers, laughter and lots of hollering.
But in the minutes before that, NASA’s InSight team will be monitoring the Mars lander’s radio signals using a variety of spacecraft – and even radio telescopes here on Earth – to suss out what’s happening 91 million miles (146 million km) away.
Because these signals are captured by several spacecraft, they’re relayed to Earth in different ways and at different times. That means the mission team may know right away when InSight touches down, or they may have to wait up to several hours.
Here’s how NASA will be listening for the Mars landing on November 26, 2018.
Radio Telescopes
As the InSight lander descends into Mars’ atmosphere, it will broadcast simple radio signals called “tones” back to Earth. Engineers will be tuning in from two locations: the National Science Foundation’s Green Bank Observatory in Green Bank, West Virginia, and the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy’s facility at Effelsberg, Germany. Their results will be relayed to Mission Control at JPL and to engineers at Lockheed Martin Space in Denver.
These tones don’t reveal much information, but radio engineers can interpret them to track key events during InSight’s entry, descent and landing (EDL). For example, when InSight deploys its parachute, a shift in velocity changes the frequency of the signal. This is caused by what’s called the Doppler effect, which is the same thing that occurs when you hear a siren change in pitch as an ambulance goes by. Looking for signals like these will allow the team to know how InSight’s EDL is progressing.
Mars Cube One (MarCO)
Two briefcase-sized spacecraft are flying behind InSight and will attempt to relay its signals to Earth. Belonging to a class of spacecraft called CubeSats, the MarCOs are being tested as a way for future missions to send home data during EDL.
The MarCOs are experimental technology. But if they work as they should, the pair will transmit the whole story of EDL as it’s unfolding. That might include an image from InSight of the Martian surface right after the lander touches down.
InSight
After it touches down, InSight will essentially yell:
I made it!
Seven minutes later, the spacecraft says it again – but a little louder and clearer.
The first time, it will communicate with a tone beacon that the radio telescopes will try to detect. The second time, it will send a “beep” from its more powerful X-band antenna, which should now be pointed at Earth. This beep includes slightly more information and is only heard if the spacecraft is in a healthy, functioning state. If NASA’s Deep Space Network picks up this beep, it’s a good sign that InSight survived landing. Engineers will need to wait until early evening to find out if the lander successfully deployed its solar arrays.
Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO)
Besides the MarCO CubeSats, NASA’s MRO will be soaring over Mars, recording InSight’s data during descent.
MRO will hold on to the data it records during EDL as it disappears over the Martian horizon. When it comes back around from the other side, it will play back that data for engineers to study. By 23:00 UTC on November 26 (6 p.m. EST), they should be able to piece together MRO’s recording of the landing.
MRO’s recording is similar to an airplane’s black box, which means that it could also prove important if InSight doesn’t successfully touch down.
2001 Mars Odyssey
NASA’s longest-lived spacecraft at Mars will also relay data after InSight has touched down. Odyssey will relay the entire history of InSight’s descent to Mars, as well as a couple of images. It will also relay confirmation that InSight’s solar arrays, which are vital to the spacecraft’s survival, deployed fully. Engineers will have this data just before 01:30 UTC on November 27 (8:30 p.m. EST on November 26).
Odyssey will also serve as a data relay for InSight during surface operations, along with MRO, NASA’s Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution mission (MAVEN) and the European Space Agency’s Trace Gas Orbiter.

Bottom line: Here’s how NASA will know the fate of its InSight lander, as it attempts to land on Mars on Monday, November 26, 2018.
There are around 500 billion planets in the Milky Way alone, and at least 10 billion of them are Earth-like. All these planets, and yet, we’ve discovered exactly zero alien life forms.
But what if we did? What if NASA announced that they found microbes in the oceans of Europa? Or ancient alien ruins on Venus?
What would that mean to our human civilization here on Earth? Would we consider that good news at all?
Aliens? No Aliens?
Since humans began searching for extraterrestrial life within our Solar System in the 1890s, we’re still waiting to encounter an alien life form. But if we did find one, that would be very bad news. Because in that case we might as well be dead.
Obviously, in this case we’re referring to life which comes from a planet other than Earth, not alien residents of other countries. Humans have speculated about alien life for decades, ranging from simple bacteria to advanced species.
Most of our speculation on alien life is based on the simple fact that the universe is huge. How could we be the only life in the galaxy, let alone the universe?
This logic is based on the Copernican principle. Named for the scientist Nicolaus Copernicus, the principle states that the Earth and the Sun are not observers in the universe, nor are they better or worse than every other planet. Everything that applies to other planets applies to Earth… including life.
Scientists have proposed various ‘habitable zones’, where extraterrestrial life could theoretically live. Billions of ‘Earth-like’ planets have been discovered, but very few have been found in one of these zones which meet the criteria for life.
These zones require solvent water, which is a necessity for life on Earth.
So, what if the aliens invaded? It wouldn’t look anything like the alien invasion you might imagine. Nobody would blast their super advanced weapons at us… Hopefully not.
Even if they did, it wouldn’t be that much of a problem. Because by the time we found alien life, we’d already be on our way to self-destruction. All because of the Great Filter. But what kind of filter is capable to kill our entire civilization? And why?
The Great Brita Filter:
Let’s back up a little bit. Basic probability asserts that alien life must exist somewhere in the Universe. If that were the case, wouldn’t we be able to see some signs of life out there? But we don’t. The Universe seems endlessly empty.
It’s this contradiction that has been blowing scientists’ minds ever since they realized that the Universe is very, very big. They called it the Fermi paradox. It also says that all species in the Universe go through the same evolutionary path, no matter where they’re from.
First, the development of life anywhere in the Universe starts with the right star system and a planet that has just the right conditions.
Then organic compounds assemble themselves into self-replicating patterns and eventually evolve into more complex multi-cell organisms. All the way up to the species with the big brain, that eventually take over their own planet and change it according to their needs. Here on Earth, that happens to be us, humans.
Then there’s the last step – space colonization. That could happen for many reasons – overpopulation and the need to spread out to survive, conquest of solar systems one after another, or even simple curiosity. Whatever the reason is, all civilizations will end up trying to colonize space.
Some alien species may have been around for billions of years longer than us. But they still haven’t shown up here on Earth. Looks like something is making it very hard to colonize a galaxy, maybe even impossible. The Great Filter. Yes, the thing that might wipe out all of humanity.
It’s something very dangerous, something that happens to every civilization that is advanced enough to go beyond their planet. One of the steps on everyone’s evolutionary path. Something that takes maybe billions of years to go through.
Having never met life on other planets means that the hypothesized Great Filter didn’t wipe us out. Instead, we might be the first civilization to pass it safely, and the first to reach this level of technology in the entire Universe.
But, just because we haven’t seen them, doesn’t mean they don’t exist, or never existed…. There’s a chance some aggressive alien species might have been on the way to Earth to destroy us all. But since they never showed up on our planet, that means something destroyed their entire civilization before they even reached Earth. The Great Filter?
It doesn’t look we’re going to find anyone as advanced as we are. If there was a more advanced civilization than ours, we’d know it by now. The most we can hope for is bacteria on Mars, or multicellular animals in the oceans of Europa.
Both options would be disturbing, but the worst thing to find would be the ancient ruins of an advanced alien civilization.
Because if they didn’t get past the Great Filter, neither did we. The only difference is that they are long dead, and we are just on our way to self-destruction.
The more complex and advanced the discovered alien life was, the more likely it would mean we’re behind the Great Filter.
Maybe that filter starts once the species take control over their own planet?
AI destroying its creator… Experiments that blow up the whole planet… Genetic engineering gone wrong… Climate change…It could be anything. It might have happened to those dead alien civilizations, and might happen to us, too.
Alien life might sound like the most exciting discovery of our time. However, it may be better for us if the Universe is absolutely sterile, and there are billions of new planets to be discovered and terraformed.
SHENZEN, China — Amy and John Bollinsworth are sitting on a white couch in the waiting room of BabyX, China’s chain of premiere fertility clinics. Two days ago they flew from London with a mixture of excitement and anxiousness for today’s appointment with their genetic counselor.
After a month’s discussion and going through the BabyX’s gene catalogue, they’re ready to pick out the traits of their future baby: a piercing blue eyed, curly-red haired girl with tiny freckles on her face and a gene enabling her to sleep just a couple of hours a night and feel rested.
It is 2070, the year when China registered five million “designer babies” being born, up 20% from last year and expected to continue growing. BabyX, a part state-owned enterprise, is at the forefront on the boom. Developed out of GHealth, a consumer genomics company offering genetic tests to improve fertility treatments, BabyX received the first commercial baby-engineering license in 2030.
“We’re happy to be able to provide a high quality genetic service to our customers coming from over 50 countries across the world,” said Xiao Bao, head of BabyX business operations, speaking at a recent launch of a new product line in Beijing — a gene catalogue of sports traits including increased reaction speed, endurance, among others.
BabyX is one of many companies which sprung up during the genomics revolution in the first half of the 21st century. In 2014 the total sequencing market was estimated at $1.9 billion, with the potential market being estimated at $23 billion. For reproductive testing market, the opportunity was estimated to be close to $2.0 billion annually.
The “designer babies” are created using CRISPR gene editing, a technique that allows genes to be modified at specific desired locations within the genome and that became commonly used in laboratories around the world in early 2010s.
Gene editing is done using a tool called CRISPR-Cas9. CRISPR stands for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Palindromic Repeats. The name refers to the DNA sequence within the bacterial system where CRISPR was initially discovered. The DNA sequence repeats itself over and over again with unique sequences in-between the repeating palindromic ones. Cas9 is a protein which acts like molecular scissors, while a guiding piece of RNA (the other molecule essential to life) works as a small tag pointing Cas9 to which area in the DNA it should go and then where it should make very precise cuts. One way to think about CRISPR is as a text editor where you could search the given text of your genome, find the place where you want to edit it and make a change.
The technology has developed rapidly since the 2010s, although it initially ran into heavy resistance. Around forty countries, including China, discouraged or banned the editing tool to genetically engineer germline cells — cells whose change in the genome will be passed onto the progeny.
After publishing the first study on human embryos in 2015, where scientists attempted to modify a gene responsible for B-thalassaemia, a fatal blood disorder, China took the lead from the US in genome editing of embryos.
Whereas in the US, the federal funding of germline gene editing research was prohibited, the B-thalassaemia study was funded by the Chinese government. Within the next decade, technical challenges on the road to designer babies were overcome. One of the biggest challenges was preventing CRISPR going rogue and acting on unintended sites within the genome. This could lead to unwanted mutations such as inadvertently activating a cancer-causing gene or allowing pieces of chromosome to come together in a genomic rearrangement called a translocation, one of the causes of diseases like chronic myeloid leukemia. But by 2025 CRISPR system evolved up to the point where such off-targeting was strictly controllable.
The same year, 2025, China established its Human Fertilization Agency and lifted the ban on embryo genome editing, paving the way to commercializing the science behind it. The role of the Human Fertilization agency was to issue licenses to private and governmental organizations to use embryo genome editing for commercial and research purposes.
In China, these arguments were brushed aside. “China supports human rights and is a leader in the fight to improve health around the world with use of genetic engineering. UNESCO declarations do not create a legally binding obligations for the countries which signed them,” was the only short statement given from the communications department of the Human Fertilization Agency. After this act, a number of private designer genomic clinics sprung up in China.
The first “designer baby” was born in 2030 in Tianjin: Adam, a boy with purple eyes and golden locks framing his heart-shaped face. Like the Bollinsworths’ future daughter, Adam also had the ability to sleep just a couple of hours a day and feel rested. The activation of this gene enhanced the productivity of the working population by 3 percent around 2070, when the generation after Adam’s began entering the workforce. In the 2030s, though, it initially just meant longer sleepless nights for Adam’s parents.
Adam and other designer babies were born with enhanced intellectual abilities and physical appearances, designed to be more attractive based on population wide polls. However, the superhuman life they were given to lead came at a price.
In the decades after Adam’s birth debates raged from questions of serving genetically enhanced people to the need for different grading systems adapted to designer children’s enhanced abilities. Private schools appeared, offering accelerated curriculum specially catering for designer children. Education specialists warned that designer children could face similar challenges as gifted learners. A 2006 study, reported that 67% of gifted individuals experienced some form of bullying by the age of 14 within the educational system and therefore could face higher rates of suicide and depression.
The rise of genetically-modified people also quickly provoked fear, particularly in the US.
On Time Magazine’s 2040 Person-of-the-Year cover, a 10 year-old Adam stared out under the headline, “U.S. or Them” — just a decade after he had appeared on it under a celebratory one. A month earlier, the U.S. had banned entrance to all genetically-modified people, except in cases where the modification was medical-related.
“We won’t let those monsters enter our country and procreate with our citizens!” Benjamin Jackson, the country’s controversial president, had told TV cameras, as he signed an executive order imposing the ban.
There had also been a fearful reaction in Europe, where France required special visas for GM-people entering. Countries enforced strict border controls where the special visa stamped in the passport contained a barcode with person’s stored genome sequence, allowing immigration officers to see what modifications had been made.
Just five years before that, in 2035 the world had celebrated a milestone together. Thirty two OECD countries had recorded zero new cases of cystic fibrosis. In more than two thirds of cases the difference between suffering the disease or not had proved to be just a single missing letter in a person’s genome.
This disease was just one of many genetic disorders that future generations in developed countries would know nothing about. Progress was still uneven though, while developed nations were making huge strides towards disease eradication, developing countries faced the same problems as in the past: poor medical access and unaffordable prices of genetic engineering. Similar to prices of insulin which soared in 2010s, the price of a genetic modification didn’t depend only on the price of technology. Although the technology was getting cheaper, prices often depended more on the politics around governments and the pharmaceutical companies providing the service. Genetic engineering of embryos came coupled with IVF treatments, which, according to the Advanced Fertility Center of Chicago, in their basic form without CRISPR came with a price tag of $15,000, making them unattainable for populations of developing countries.
But, while throughout the 2030s the world embraced editing embryo’s genomes as a way to eradicate heritable diseases, enhancing the genetic traits of your offspring remained intensely contested.
The EU and the US initially banned any kind of genetic manipulation which didn’t directly aid disease prevention and treatment. Asian and Latin American countries, however — led by Japan, China, Brazil and India — allowed the creation of designer babies under one condition: a designed life couldn’t create life, all people created this way were compulsorily born sterile.
Unsurprisingly, the technology was quickly identified as a potential means of population control, particularly in countries where policies meant to target overcrowding were already in place. The same year Adam was born, China, released a planning document estimating a 1:1 ratio of designer vs. normal newborns would lead to a decrease in the population numbers. India projected that by 2080 a quarter of its births would be designer babies, conducted under a public births program. As the GM-people matured, adoptions also surged.
After half a year in China and two IVF treatments, Amy and John Bollinsworth returned to London expecting a child. Not everyone was pleased by their decision — some friends refused to hold baby Jemima. Many things though were the same for them as any other family — there were still waiting lists for childcare, and the scrambling later to get her into the right school catchment area. Even in a world of genetically-designed life some things didn’t change.

De discussie of de Amerikanen nu wel of niet mensen op de maan hebben gezet blijft tot op de dag van vandaag aktueel.
Om aan alle speculaties een einde te maken, zijn het de Russen die op de maan willen controleren of de Amerikanen er werkelijk zijn geweest.
Voor velen is het niet voor te stellen dat de maanlandingen door de Amerikanen waarbij mensen op dit hemellichaam rondliepen wellicht in scene is gezet.
De discussie of dit nu wel of niet echt is gebeurd, wordt uiteraard niet alleen bij ons gevoerd, maar eigenlijk overal ter wereld.
En zo kan het dat de president van Moldavië aan Dmitry Rozogin, hoofd van Roscosmos (de Russische NASA), vroeg of hij wist of de Amerikanen nu wel of niet op de maan zijn geweest. Dit mede omdat Rusland zelf ook plannen heeft om met maanmissies te gaan beginnen. In de jaren zeventig van de vorige eeuw waren ook zij bezig met maanmissies, maar na vier exploderende raketten werden verdere pogingen toen afgeblazen.
Rozogov antwoordde dat een onderdeel van de Russische maanmissies zal zijn om te controleren of de Amerikanen daadwerkelijk op de maan zijn geweest. Nu wordt er in de Amerikaanse media gezegd dat Rozogov dit gezegd zou hebben als grap, maar Russen staan er in het algemeen niet om bekend dat ze echte grappenmakers zijn. Verder weet Associated Press te melden dat er in Rusland veel mensen zijn die samenzweringstheorieën aanhangen.
Er is uiteraard een reden dat Rozogov dit zegt en misschien doet hij het wel voor komen als grappig bedoeld, maar dat zal het waarschijnlijk niet zijn. Uiteraard zullen de Russen controleren of er inderdaad sporen te vinden zijn op de maan van de geclaimde Amerikaanse aanwezigheid.
Wij hebben twee jaar geleden een uitgebreid artikel gepubliceerd, geschreven door een lezer, waar overtuigend wordt afgerekend met de Amerikaanse bewering dat ze op de maan zijn geweest.
Ook nu nog, bijna een halve eeuw later, komen er nog steeds nieuwe dingen boven water waaruit blijkt dat NASA heeft gelogen over de maanlandingen, zoals het volgende uit een artikel eerder dit jaar.
Het schijnt een wetenschappelijk feit te zijn dat geluid niet hoorbaar is in de ruimte. Dit komt omdat volgens de wetenschapje klaarblijkelijk geen geluid kunt horen omdat er geen atomen of moleculen zijn om dit geluid te dragen.
Ruimtefilms met zware explosies slaan de plank volledig mis. In de ruimte is het doodstil, want geluid plant zich niet voort in een vacuüm.
Nasa laay zich door dit soort kleinigheden niet uit het veld slaan en wil de wereldbevolking doen geloven dat astronauten op de maan met een hamer kunnen slaan en dat dat geluid vervolgens kan worden gehoord.
We kunnen daarom ook een lang verhaal kort houden dit keer, want de fameuze Streetcap heeft beelden ontdekt van de Apollo 15 missie, waarbij een astronaut druk bezig is met met een hamer een soort paal in de grond te slaan en iedere keer als hij de paal raakt dan hoor je dit.
Dat betekent dan dat de maan een atmosfeer heeft net als de aarde en als dat niet zo is, dan zijn de beelden volkomen nep en is Nasa bij deze wederom betrapt.
Mocht je nog meer argumenten willen hebben waaruit zou blijken dat de maanlandingen nep waren, dan volgen er hier nog tien in de volgende video.
Maar, het is zoals met alles. Ook al wijzen veel argumenten in de richting van een nep maanlanding, het zou natuurlijk heel mooi zijn als de Russen er daadwerkelijk in zouden slagen om voor eens en voor altijd vast te stellen wat er nu wel of niet is gebeurd.
En mochten zij vaststellen dat de maanlandingen inderdaad helemaal nep waren, dan is nog maar de grote vraag of wij dat ooit te weten zullen komen. Waarschijnlijk zullen de Russen dat lekker voor zichzelf houden, bijvoorbeeld om Amerika mee onder druk te zetten, net zoals Erdogan dat doet met de moord op de journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
En, mocht je al moeite hebben met het idee dat de bevolking massaal is voorgelogen betreffende de maanlandingen, dan raden wij je voor je eigen gemoedsrust aan vooral niet op deze link te klikken.
It’s the favorite Old Testament story of fire-and-brimstone preachers who want their flocks to clean up their acts. In fact, fire and brimstone (an ancient word for ‘sulfur’) is what the Book of Genesis says rained down on the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah as punishment for various sins (sexual, of course – the source of ‘sodomy’). And who can forget Lot’s wife, who disobeyed an order and looked back at what was happening to Sodom and turned into a pillar of salt. Did Sodom and Gomorrah really exist? Is there some sort of natural explanation for what might have happened to them … and to poor Lot’s wife, who doesn’t even get a name in the account? A group of researchers recently found evidence that leads them to believe the fire-and-brimstone the destroyed Sodom was the result of an atmospheric meteor explosions that puts those of Tunguska and Chelyabinsk to shame. And they name names!
“That the most productive agricultural land in the region, which had supported flourishing civilizations continuously for at least 3,000 years, should suddenly relinquish, then resist, human habitation for such a long period of time has begged investigation.”
That puzzle was the inspiration for “The 3.7kaBP Middle Ghor Event: Catastrophic Termination of a Bronze Age Civilization,” a paper produced by a multidisciplinary group of scientists and presented by archaeologist Philip Silvia at the annual meeting of the American Schools of Oriental Research held last week in Denver. According to The Times of Israel, Silvia revealed the results of twelve seasons of study in a 25-km (15 mile)-wide circular plain north of the Dead Sea called Middle Ghor which is where Sodom and Gomorrah were believed to have once stood. Radiocarbon dating and minerals that appeared to have been instantly crystallized by high temperatures convinced them that these were the result of a massive airburst caused by a meteor about 3,700 years ago … the time when Lot’s wife would have turned around to see the explosion and possible been incinerated.
The excavations showed that the area, now a part of Jordan, was continuously occupied for at least 2.500 years before an estimated 65,000 people disappeared, entire cities were reduced to rubble and the Dead Sea suddenly spread its salty waters over once-fertile farmlands, rendering the area uninhabitable for 700 years. The archeologists found pieces of pottery melted into glass and shards of minerals embedded into their surfaces by incredibly high-force winds. This evidence and much more left them no doubt as to what Lot’s wife saw:
“This paper surveys the multiple lines of evidence that collectively suggest a Tunguskalike, cosmic airburst event that obliterated civilization — including the Middle Bronze Age city-state anchored by Tall el-Hammam — in the Middle Ghor (the 25 km diameter circular plain immediately north of the Dead Sea) ca. 1700 BCE, or 3,700 years before present (3.7kaBP). Based upon the archaeological evidence, it took at least 600 years to recover sufficiently from the soil destruction and contamination before civilization could again become established in the eastern Middle Ghor.”
OK, that explains the fire-and-brimstone, but does it prove that this meteor destroyed the biblical cities of Sodom and Gomorrah?
There are biblical references to “ha-kikkar,” which means “the plain,” and translations of Genesis refer to the rain of “burning sulfur” destroying “those cities and the entire plain, including all those living in the cities — and also the vegetation in the land.” Silvia and co-author Dr. Steven Collins write:
“The physical evidence from Tall el-Hammam and neighboring sites exhibit signs of a highly destructive concussive and thermal event that one might expect from what is described in Genesis 19. The destruction not only of Tall el-Hammam (Sodom), but also its neighbors (Gomorrah and the other cities of the plain) was most likely caused by a meteoritic airburst event.”
What about Lot’s wife and all the sinning? You’ll have to wait for another study.
PRE-ADAMITES: DID HUMANS INHABIT EARTH BEFORE ADAM AND EVE?
The timeline of human existence has captured the attention of philosophers, scientists, and ordinary, curious people throughout the ages. Of course, there is the famous tale of Adam and Eve, but were they truly the first humans to walk the Earth? There is a growing body of research that suggests modern humans were not the first intelligent beings to live on our planet.
IS IT POSSIBLE PRE-ADAMITES EXISTED?
There are groups from all belief systems — Christians, conspiracy theorists, alien researchers, evolutionists, and more — who believe pre-Adamites (humans or intelligent beings that walked the Earth before Adam) actually existed.
The idea of the possibility of a pre-Adamite civilization and discussion about the origin of the human race is not a new one. Debates on the topic have been taking place since 170 AD. Over the years, many theories swirled about, enticing logical and romantic thinkers alike to explore further, look deeper, and question what they had been taught.
THE CHRISTIAN DEBATE
A growing number of Christians and people of other faiths believe modern-day humans were not the first — and possibly are not the last.
The Bible has clear passages about events that have taken place and that will take place at some point in the future, stating human existence operates on a 7,000-year cycle. Based on scripture now, the Earth is only a little over 6,000 years old. However, a great deal of scientific evidence indicates it is much, much older.
The Bible does not specifically state Adam was the first man ever to walk the Earth. There are too many gaps in the information contained in that chapter to get a clear picture.
Consider the account of Noah and the Great Flood. All humans were wiped out, except for Noah and his family. It’s quite possible a new Adam and Eve were born out of this catastrophe, starting the cycle anew. Therefore, it’s not entirely irrational to have doubts over whether or not Adam and Eve were truly the first humans on Earth.
In the book of Genesis, we read the Earth was without form and void — as if it had experienced a great catastrophe. We know from scripture that water already covered the Earth, and scientists are now finding, under the great bodies of water of the world, evidence of entire civilizations. These findings raise more questions than answers. How do we mesh science with scripture? Is it possible?
Many events documented in the biblical texts seem to be supported by science. Can these two seemingly oppositional systems coexist and come together to give us a more complete picture of where we came from?
Consider that the original biblical texts have been translated repeatedly. The version we use today has only been around since the 1600s, and the Catholic church uses a heavy hand in changing the scripture and the structure of the book itself. If you stop and think about it, perhaps we’ve lost something in all the edits and translations. Maybe we don’t have the whole story.
Keep in mind, there is nothing new under the sun (Ecclesiastes 1:9).
THE SCIENTIFIC DEBATE
Traditionally, science and religion are diametrically opposed, with religion calling for faith and science calling for fact. However, scientific findings in recent years seem to be closing that gap.
Scientists present evidence that dinosaurs once roamed the Earth. Christians open their Bibles to the book of Job to read about what appears to be dinosaurs coexisting with humans. More recently found civilizations and objects defy all scientific and biblical teaching.
Throughout the world, ancient cities are being discovered; not on mountaintops or in forests, but under the ocean. These include:
Port Royal, Jamaica
Lion City of Quiandao Lake, China
Nero’s sunken city
Cleopatra’s Palace in Alexandria, Egypt, and Thonis-Heracleion in Egypt
Sunken city of Cuba
Dwarka, India
Yonaguni Monument, Japan
What are these ancient underwater cities? Are they evidence of a pre-Adamite civilization? Many of them have elaborate structures and display a level of technology scientists say was not possible at the time they would have been in use. Could carbon dating and other methods scientists use to date materials really be that far off? That’s not just a decade or two but a multi-billion-year error. Scientists believe they have definitive evidence, or are at least very close, to support their timelines.
Some scientists believe they have found evidence of the inhabitants of some of these civilizations. A flash frozen civilization in Antarctica is of particular interest. The skeletons looked vaguely human except for the elongated skulls. Who were they? What were they? Scientists speculate an ancient race that has long since died out.
Conspiracy theorists, on the other hand, believe they are an alien race that came here to escape their dying planet. They set up their civilizations and “seeded” the Earth. That is what we humans are.
Everyone has a story, a theory about what took place. The truth is, there are very strange things on this planet that cannot be explained by our current understanding of history, science, technology, and culture. What do we do? We press on. We continue to explore. We keep our minds open and keep searching for the truth.
Regardless of our belief systems, nothing can be learned by blindly walking through life ignoring what does not fit in the history books. Skeptics must acknowledge these ancient civilizations are real, and they were left here for a reason. Why weren’t they destroyed? Is this part of an elaborate puzzle, a higher test to separate the wheat from the chaff?
As for the scientists, are they doing all they can? Is science truly utilizing all available resources to explore these civilizations and search for clues that would change the way we view society and the world? The fact that these structures and entire cities were left behind and buried, only for us to find them so many years later, suggests intent.
When you are deciding what to believe, the greatest tool that can be sharpened and utilized is your critical thinking.

These bar codes, or snippets of DNA that reside outside the nuclei of living cells, suggest that it's not just people who came from a single pair of beings, but nine out of every 10 animal species, too
Stoeckle and Thaler, the scientists who headed the study, concluded that ninety percent of all animal species alive today come from parents that all began giving birth at roughly the same time, less than 250 thousand years ago - throwing into doubt the patterns of human evolution.

'This conclusion is very surprising,' Thaler admitted, 'and I fought against it as hard as I could.'
The new report from experts at the Rockefeller University along with from the University of Basel published the extraordinary findings in Human Evolution.
The research was led by Senior Research Associate Mark Stoeckle and Research Associate David Thaler of the University of Basel, Switzerland.
They mined 'big data' insights from the world's fast-growing genetic databases and reviewed a large literature in evolutionary theory, including Darwin.
Dr Stoeckle said: 'At a time when humans place so much emphasis on individual and group differences, maybe we should spend more time on the ways in which we resemble one another and the rest of the animal kingdom.'
The conclusions throw up considerable mystery as to why the need for human life to start again was needed such a relatively short time ago, especially since the last known extinction we know of was during the time of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.
This opens up the possibility of an inbuilt human evolutionary process wherein we break down and die out, leaving the need to start from scratch.

We're also surprisingly similar to not just every other human, but every other species.
'If a Martian landed on Earth and met a flock of pigeons and a crowd of humans, one would not seem more diverse than the other according to the basic measure of mitochondrial DNA,' said Jesse Ausubel, Director of the Program for the Human Environment at The Rockefeller University.
'Culture, life experience and other things can make people very different but in terms of basic biology, we're like the birds,' Dr Stoeckle added.
The 'mitochondrial DNA' examined in the research is that which mothers pass down from generation to generation and it showed the 'absence of human exceptionalism.'
'One might have thought that, due to their high population numbers and wide geographic distribution, humans might have led to greater genetic diversity than other animal species,' added Stoeckle.
'At least for mitochondrial DNA, humans turn out to be low to average in genetic diversity.'
The study has been misunderstood by some religious parties who thought it meant that we all came into being in some seminal Big Bang-typed event 100,000 ago, but this isn't what the findings actually suggest.
What Stoeckle and Thaler's findings point to is that our species has to revamp far more often than we thought, and we do so in unison with all animals.

While plenty of orbiters, landers and rovers have sought to understand Mars' surface and atmosphere, InSight — or more formally Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport — will be the first to turn its gaze inward.
With just three main instruments aboard the lander, the team has carefully designed the mission to tackle a big mystery: What's hiding beneath the Martian surface — geologically, that is. That makes InSight stand out from the string of missions that have gradually looked at the possibility of life on Mars throughout the planet's history, most recently the Curiosity rover and the upcoming Mars 2020 rover. InSight has three main projects that will structure its time on Mars.
First, it carries a seismometer decked out with a suite of environmental sensors. You may be familiar with seismometers from their work here on Earth detecting tremors in the ground, and InSight's will perform a similar task, sensing hypothesized shakes in the ground that scientists call marsquakes, as well as tremors triggered by meteorite impacts.
But terrestrial seismometers build up a dense network of instruments, helping scientists pinpoint what's causing the shakes those instruments feel. InSight's seismometer will be the only quake sense on all of Mars, so scientists had to rig the instrument to make sure they could still get the data they need. They'll also be hoping to see as many shakes as possible to maximize the data they can use and its precision.
Another challenge for the seismometer was eliminating all the other factors that could look like shakes to the super-sensitive instrument. That means the seismometer is decked out with a suite of sensors measuring factors like wind and pressure, which could be misinterpreted as marsquakes.
Once the seismometer has time to gather data on shakes, the team hopes to be able to map layers within Mars, since waves travel differently through rock under different conditions. The analysis could also potentially identify liquid water or plumes feeding volcanoes, although scientists aren't yet confident of that.
That underground-mapping project is paralleled by the work being done by a second instrument, a pair of incredibly precise radio transmitters. By bouncing signals to and from Earth and watching how they travel, scientists can identify where InSight is in space down to just a couple inches (a few centimeters).
Using that ultra-detailed location, the scientists can then watch the lander move over time and gradually map the tiny wobbles in how Mars rotates. Those wobbles reflect the planet's interior structure, specifically where its core falls on the spectrum between solid and liquid — the latter sloshes more.
InSight's final task is to deploy a heat probe that can hammer itself 16 feet (5 meters) below the Martian surface — much deeper than the mere inches that other spacecraft have drilled on planetary bodies.
The probe will measure how heat is rising through the planet, which should help scientists figure out where the heat is coming from. It can also produce its own brief flashes of heat and study how that heat flows through the surrounding rock, learning more about the rock that makes up the Martian crust.
All told, InSight's three projects will help scientists figure out how our neighbor was born and whether Mars was formed from the same mixture of materials as Earth and our moon. That could have implications for our broader understanding of how our solar system formed — and even for what we know about solar system formation more generally.
So get excited for the drama of landing — but remember, it's just the beginning for InSight.
Look out, International Space Station, this spacecraft is hot on your tail! An astronaut captured a stunning time lapse video of the Russian Progress MS-10 cargo spacecraft, also known asProgress 71, on its way to the orbiting complex.
About 15 minutes of the Progress launch on Nov. 16 show up in the time lapse video posted on theEuropean Space Agency website. The video clearly shows the flare of rocket launch, the spacecraft making its way up into space, and the re-entry of the first stage of the rocket. European Space Astronaut Alexander Gerst, the commander of Expedition 57, captured the images from the wrap-around Cupola window on the space station. He set a camera that took pictures at regular intervals, and the resulting timelapse shows the launch at about eight to 16 times normal speed, according to a statement from ESA.
Progress delivered 5,652 pounds (2,564 kg) to the space station Nov. 18 after making a flawless launch from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, where Russia blasts cargo and cosmonauts to the space station. The next scheduled launch from the site will have a crew on board — the three-person Expedition 58 crew, which is expected to leave Earth at 6:31 a.m. EST Dec. 3 (1131 GMT).
Gerst, NASA astronaut Serena Auñón-Chancellor and Russian cosmonaut Sergey Prokopyev arrived at the space station on June 8. Gerst's crew was supposed to be joined by two other astronauts after an Oct. 11 launch, but that flight aborted during launch due to a deformed sensor in the rocket. Russia swiftly wrapped up an investigation and moved the Expedition 58 launch three weeks earlier in order to keep the station crewed while Gerst's team leaves for home on Dec. 20.

George Filer III is 82 years old and currently serves as the New Jersey director of MUFON, which is an American based non-profit association that studies the UFO phenomena. He is one of the many ex-military and NASA veterans to speak openly about UFOs. However, he also happens to have 20 years of experience as an Air Force officer. He revealed that some of the events he experienced in the air are rather inexplicable.

Namely, during the Cold War, Filer was placed in Scotland. He remembers piloting a military aircraft that tried to intercept a weird object that was as big as a bridge on the radar. As they were getting nearer, they were able to see lights off in the distance. He described the lights looked something like a cruise ship at night. There were multiple all over the object.
When we got closer, we could see lights off in the distance – kind of like a cruise ship you would see at night, with multiple lights across it. As we got, I don’t know, about 5 miles from it – it went up into space. And we were doing over 400 (miles per hour) and I would say it was doing 10, 20 times our speed and it was this huge object. In one of the most provocative and misunderstood studies of the year, scientists in the U.S. and Switzerland have madean astonishing discovery: All humans alive today are the offspring of a common father and mother – an Adam and Eve – who walked the planet 100,000 to 200,000 years ago, which by evolutionary standards is like yesterday. Moreover, the same is true of nine out of every 10 animal species, meaning that nearly all of Earth’s creatures living today sprang into being recently from some seminal, Big Bang-like event.
Mark Stoeckle at Rockefeller University and David Thaler at the University of Basel reached this striking conclusion after analyzing the DNA “bar codes” of five million animals from 100,000 different species. The bar codes are snippets of DNA that reside outside the nuclei of living cells – so-called mitochondrial DNA, which mothers pass down from generation to generation.
With each reproduction, errors creep into the bar code, as they do when you repeatedly photocopy a document. By measuring the accumulated errors – the blurriness or “diversity” among the bar codes – scientists are able to infer the passage of time.
That’s how Stoeckle and Thaler concluded that ninety percent of all animal species alive today come from parents that all began giving birth at roughly the same time, less than a quarter-million years ago. “This conclusion is very surprising,” Thaler avers, “and I fought against it as hard as I could.”
What caused animal life on Earth to be almost completely renewed such a short time ago? For now, it remains a mystery.
It’s possible something far more powerful than H-bombs decimated life and only a single set of parents for each species survived to live and procreate another day. But the last major extinction event we know about – the one that snuffed out the mighty dinosaurs – happened a full 65 million years ago.
It’s also possible there is something in nature that limits the size of an animal population. Perhaps it’s some built-in evolutionary process that when a population gets too big, it crashes and must restart itself from scratch.
In their report, published in Human Evolution, Stoeckle and Thaler offer other possible explanations, including, Thaler explains, “ice ages and other forms of environmental change, infections, predation, competition from other species and for limited resources, and interactions among these forces.” Whatever the explanation, he adds, the takeaway is this: “all of animal life experiences pulses of growth and stasis or near extinction on similar time scales.”
That is, humans, elephants, birds, you name it – Earth’s creatures tend to stand and fall in unison, like the rising and falling of the tides. And even though we don’t know what Svengali is directing the show, we now have scientific evidence that it wipes the slate clean far more frequently than we ever imagined.
Many religious commentators misunderstand this study to mean that species abruptly came into being only recently. To be clear: according to evolutionary biologists, species developed gradually over many millions of years. Stoeckle and Thaler’s discovery is that something happened roughly 100,000 years ago that created entirely new populations from long-existing species.
That said, Stoeckle and Thaler’s study does line up with the Bible in at least two notable ways. First, it affirms that we and our fellow creatures on Earth arose from a recent and profound creation event, orchestrated by some unknown mechanism. And second, the DNA bar codes reveal that species are quantized. Instead of there being a continuum of animal varieties, as one might expect from millions of years of gradual evolution, creatures fall into very distinct, widely separated populations – what the Bible describes as “kinds,” from the Hebrew word min.
“Darwin struggled to understand the absence of intermediates and his questions remain fruitful [to this day],” says Thaler. What the new study discovered, he explains, is that “If individuals are stars, then species are galaxies. They are compact clusters in the vastness of empty sequence space.”
Above all, Stoeckle and Thaler’s intriguing study serves up hard evidence for the astonishing fragility of life and a humbling lesson for the high-and-mighty among us. It proves we are at the mercy of forces we do not see nor understand; forces that made our existence possible a few hundred thousand years ago and that just as quickly – in the twinkling of an eye – can and will one day take us out.

Killer Robots? They Are Reality. Should We Be Concerned?
As I write this my robot vacuum cleaner hums away downstairs quietly doing its thing, sometimes rumbling over the air vent in such a way that I can hear it upstairs in my office. It has a name – Sharknado.
The robot vacuum is great. I was initially skeptical. How could it do a decent job ? It’s a rolling disk with brushes. How could it do anything close to the job of a conventional vacuum? But after 2 sessions with the thing I was convinced. As I marveled at the nice fresh family room courtesy of our new gadget I became a believer.
It was yesterday that I heard my wife yell to the kids that they needed to pick their headphones up off the floor “so the robot could clean” their rooms. The sentence gave me pause.
It won’t be long before yards are cut, kids are driven to school, dogs are walked, beds are made, and meals are cooked by robots on a large scale. The trajectory seems clear. The robots are coming.
We are just in the opening scenes of this new world and we would be wise to have a serious debate about the role of robots in our society,now. The ethical questions we are and will be presented with in a robotized world are and will be profound. They will challenge our understanding of what it means to be human. We will have to consider seriously the prospect of robots as potentially sentient beings. (Beyond sci-fi movies.) What does it mean generally if a robot can “think”? What if a robot can “feel”? What does that mean for us in a real (forgive me) nuts and bolts sense?
In a more narrow sense we need to be aware of the fact that robots represent a leap in warfare, and that the leap is happening right now. If robot slaves can go to war and do the bidding of governments (and other entities with resources), governments are going to use them. Imagine a Golden Horde of automated soldiers sweeping into a city to raise it. Consider how one would counter such an assault. (Likely with other robots.) Consider what it means to have these machines wandering the landscape. Machines that with time may prove more robust than relatively fragile humans. We’d better make sure we do some real hard thinking before we end up with a Terminator-like situation. No joke and God forbid.

There's been talk about mysterious passageways underneath the suburb of Ybor City in Central Florida going back about 20 years, University of Southern Florida - St. Petersburg professor Emeritus of history Dr. Gary Mormino told DailyMail.com.
Mormino, 71, who has been researching the history of Ybor City for about 40 years, said the first tunnels of this kind were unearthed about two decades ago when work was being down below a Blue Ribbon grocery store.
'That provoked the question, "Why would you build a tunnel in an area that has a water table of about one foot below sea level?"'
While some have guessed the underground passages may have been used by bootleggers, Mormino said that doesn't make sense, and it's more likely they were used to bring in prostitutes or Chinese laborers from Cuba.

Mormino described them as, 'nothing too remarkable to look at,' flat on the bottom, and wide, making them unsuitable as a sewage system, and all the more interesting to those wondering why they exist.

'At this point, I'm looking at ruling things out,' he said. 'I'm asking myself, "What were the tunnels not used for?"'
While some are quick to guess they may have been used to transport bootlegged alcohol during the 1920s and early 1930s, Mormino said that doesn't make any sense, either.
'I interviewed a lot of people in the 1970s and '80s who would have been involved in bootlegging of '20s and '30s and they've all said the only people who feared the police were those who weren't involved in the rackets' he said. 'If you paid off the police, you were fine.'
Mormino shared a story about one of his interview subjects named Sam, who said his father was an Italian bootlegger, who would receive a call once each month from the police telling him he had to come in and be arrested and pay his fines.
Once there, Sam said the police would ask his father what name he wanted to be arrested under 'this time,' and the next day the front page of the newspaper would read, 'Seven Italian bootleggers arrested,' as part of a ruse intended to appease the public.
In fact, Mormino said Sam also told him he used to deliver crates of bootlegged alcohol to shops and when the police were they, they would open the door and help him carry the boxes in, praising him for being such an enterprising young man.
So, Mormino has determined, the tunnels probably weren't used for bootlegging.
Instead, he said, it's far more likely they were used for 'white slavery related to bringing women across interstate lines for immoral purposes,' along with smuggling in Chinese laborers and Chinese-Cuban prostitutes.
Mormino said Ybor City has had a large Chinese-Cuban population dating back to 1886.
'Chinese people were brought to Cuba after slavery ended in late 19th century to replace slaves and work in the sugar industry,' Mormino said.
The professor guessed that around that time, city of Tampa officials may have been in on creating the tunnels which would have otherwise been a massive and expensive undertaking for a criminal enterprise.

'Basically, corrupt politics likely allowed the criminal elements to use those tunnels as part of a vast, interconnected network,' he said.
But, Mormino made sure to mention, that while it's fun to guess about what may have gone on in those hidden passageways all those years ago, anything anyone has come up with is just a guess.
'I don't know if we'll ever know the truth, to be honest,' Mormino said. 'It's a rather elusive story now.

I don’t know what UFOs are, but I do know one thing. I can say with confidence that according to hundreds of thousands of reports across the globe and going back over several millennia, humans have a knack for encountering unexplainable things.
Does this mean that every single anomaly is a message from spirits, alien beings, or mystical entities? No. Just because someone saw something doesn’t mean that it is real, objective or honest. Lying and hallucinations are authentic phenomena. Moreover, many things that were once spooky to our little species have since been explained. We know that bubonic plague is not caused by evil spirits and that lightning is not the wrath of a vengeful god. That being said, there are still many things that escape our explanation. Many mysteries remain, and bizarre sightings and events continue to haunt us. Indeed, one day, many more of these odd events will be explainable as our ability to learn, grow and understand changes. We will continue to develop. With all that being said, errors and delusion happen, but can we claim that nothing is outside of current human knowledge? We still have much to learn.
The UFO, as an objective and cultural phenomenon, is undefinable. Author and academic Dr. Jeffrey Kripal, in his book, The Super Natural; A New Vision of the Unexplained,compares the “UFO phenomenon” to “a wastebasket problem.” He writes that the,
“UFO phenomenon is not a single thing. It is a broad set of things that are constantly being confused and mixed up.”
We tend to hold assumptions, the vast majority of which are influenced by our cultures, histories and collective mythologies, concerning exactly what we believe the UFO phenomenon to be. We toss all those assumptions into the wastebasket, creating a chaotic mix of ideas which have little rhyme or reason to be together. As I continue to study both the community and the phenomenon, I am at a loss on how to properly define the term “UFO phenomenon.”
We lump alien abductions and extraterrestrial contact in with seeing strange lights and unknown objects in the sky. The channeling of inter-dimensional entities or spirits, and even poltergeist activity, often accompany UFO sightings. Sightings of Sasquatch often accompany orbs and aerial lights. Are these all part of the UFO enigma? While the term “UFO” itself began as an American Cold War military response to ‘foo fighters’ and flying saucers, it has often been co-mingled with parapsychological phenomena such as remote viewing and telepathy. How about ancient sightings and reports of fairies, goblins, and elves? Various other modern creatures like the Mothman and the Flatwoods Monster also have connections to the UFO phenomenon. How about New Age mystical beliefs, UFO cults, demonology, secret military black aerospace projects, seeing ghosts of deceased loved ones, and near-death experiences? It is impossible to make adequate distinctions.
The UFO is incredibly pervasive, not because of the number of sightings, but because it seems to co-mingle with a vast array of established and soon to be established mythological constructs. Interestingly, it is possible to trace the various shifts in Ufological thinking across the century. From ancient mythological creatures, to evil bacteria prone Martian invaders, to flying saucers piloted by men from Venus, to extraterrestrial Greys and Nordics from distant stars, to ultraterrestrials and interdimensional beings crawling through portals, to TicTac piloting “Others,” the UFO has always been symbiotically connected to broader cultural motifs, anxieties, and ideologies. The UFO is undefinable because our cultures are. UFOs are the ghosts which haunt our socio-cultural zeitgeist, and we, in turn, haunt UFOs and make them reflections of us. It is impossible to understand what UFOs are because, fundamentally, we do not yet understand what we are.
Our cultural ideologies are constantly changing and shifting. Our values and worldview evolve. To paraphrase philosopher Guy Debord, we live in and as “representations” of the real, in a spectacle of reality, and not totally in the ‘real’ itself. This begs a key question. What contemporary ideological constructs will shape the UFO reality going forward?

While the military conspiracy trope has a long history in the Ufological narrative, the lines between absurd conspiracies and factual investment into the study of UFOs are blurring.
With defense contractors and players in the military intelligence game openly getting into bed with the UFO community, am I the only one who is a little nervous? As author Robbie Graham pointed out in his book, Silver Screen Saucers, the military has always tried to have a hand in the creation of fictional UFO-themed films. However, it seems that they are much more involved in the factual aspects of Ufology, and if their intent in dramatic films is to manage the message, what ideologies and hegemonic systems are being established when it comes to the “real” thing?
If 2017 has shown us anything, it is that the tenets and ideas within UFO research can change quickly. If anyone asked me in 2016 whether the majority of the UFO community trusted certain military and intelligence organizations, I would have guffawed. Today, my Twitter feed is a massive military industrial love-in. Are we being sold that this phenomenon is a threat and that weaponization is part of the solution?
I am not suggesting that there is a conspiracy or some secret cabal. There really doesn’t need to be. The UFO community is reflective and reflexive, and every cultural movement is influenced by a wide collection of experiences and events. The only Ufological reality we can be certain of is that reality is changing.
In retrospect, maybe the one thing I know about UFOs is that I know nothing.
Unexplained mass animal deaths just don’t seem to get the headlines they should. Shouldn’t we be worried when large groups of animalsfall from the sky or wash up on shorewith no discernible cause of death? These unexplained animal deaths appear to be getting more common. Couple that with the World Wildlife Fund’s recent data demonstrating that 60% of vertebrate life has been lost in the last four decades, and it’s easy to imagine the type of future envisioned in Blade Runnerand other sci-fi in which humans are the last living things on Earth. Bye bye, bacon.

The latest mysterious mass animal death to drive a nail in the animal kingdom’s coffin occured in Hillsboro, Oregon this month where dozens of birds from four different species were found dead with “no obvious signs of death.” Wildlife agencies are currently testing the birds to try and determine a cause of death, but as in other recent mass bird suicide events and deaths, the cause will likely remain elusive.
The bird suicides are the most troubling. Entire flocks have been seen to dive bomb the ground for no reason.
The dead birds in Hillsboro include dozens of red-winged blackbirds and European starlings, a red-tailed hawk, and a bald eagle. It’s quite uncommon for so many birds to die at once, and the fact that several different species were involved is even more anomalous. Bob Sallinger, the Conservation Director at Audubon Society of Portland, believes the birds may have been unintentionally poisoned, but other residents aren’t so sure. One resident, who refused to speak on camera, toldlocal news outlet KPTV that he has been finding dead birds on his property ever since a new electrical transformer was installed in a nearby field.

Could electromagnetic fields generated by telecommunications or electric grid infrastructure be affecting birds’ internal navigation mechanisms? NASA has been exploring the possibility that solar weather and fluctuations in Earth’s magnetic field may be driving unexplained mass marine mammal beachings. This is a UFO video that just came out. It was released by an eyewitness in Poland today. At first the video shows what looks like a four engine passenger jet burning up and crashing, but no news of such a plane crash exists. As we watch the video, the object begins to burn more and more until its just a burning ball with a flaming tail behind it. It does look like its coming from outside Earths atmosphere and boring up on reentry. There is no chance in hell that this is a meteor. No meteor ever had four contrail tails lined up side by side. Either this is a top secret space craft of Russia making a crash landing (a boarder neighbour of Poland) or this is a UFO. But as you can see, if this is a top secret craft...by the time it hit the ground, it was a crispy critter.
I do know that many UFOs can make such trails behind them, because I have seen such UFO first hand. I use to work on aircraft in the USAF. I worked on B1 and B2 bombers at Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota, a SAC high security base.

Een team van archeologen heeft in Egypte een oude tombe ontdekt met daarin nog intacte mummies van meer dan 3.500 jaar oud.
De ontdekking werd gedaan in de Al-Assasif-vallei, niet ver van de stad Luxor. Daar werden twee sarcofagen gevonden, met daarin telkens een mummie. Volgens de archeologen dateert de vondst uit de tijd van de 13e tot de 16e eeuw voor Christus. Een van de twee mummies was een vrouw met de naam Thuya.
De wetenschappers waren al sinds maart aan het werk op de plaats waar de sarcofagen nu zijn gevonden. Er werden bovendien ook zo’n 1.000 beeldjes van begrafenisrituelen gevonden, naast ook een aantal andere mummies die niet in een sarcofaag lagen. Daar zaten ook kinderen bij.
Researcher Found An Alien Shipwreck In The Bermuda Triangle
Mysterious underwater objects have emerged in the Bermuda Triangle and no one can explain whether they have a natural, an artificial or an extraterrestrial origin. The researcher who discovered the objects believes that, in fact, he found an extraterrestrial ship.
For those who don’t know, the Bermuda Triangle is located in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean. However, it doesn’t appear on any official geographic map. Its second infamous name is the Devil’s triangle.
Under the water, this area hosts many mysteries and secrets. Namely, the Bermuda Triangle is notoriously responsible for many disappearances of aircraft and ships for unknown reasons.
According to some claims, the disappearances happen due to some strange hexagonal clouds in the area.
Numerous diving researchers claim they have witnessed perplexing events in this scope. For instance, a few years ago, divers exploring the area said to have discovered a large ancient underwater city with sunk sphinxes and old wrecks. Could it have been the legendary city of Atlantis? Many, rightfully, thought so.
Treasure hunter Darrell Miklos announced yet another interesting discovery regarding the area. According to him, the Bermuda Triangle could be the home of an alien spaceship.
While diving in an area nearby the Bahamas, he saw a marvelous but mysterious underwater structure. “It was a formation unlike anything I’ve ever seen related to shipwreck material, it was too big for that,” Miklos said in an interview with Daily Mail.
As Daily Mail further reveals, Miklos arrived in the undisclosed area thanks to some secret maps designed by Gordon Cooper, a NASA astronaut and a close friend of his.
At first, Miklos actually believed he would find an English sunken ship linked to Sir Francis Drake. However, he encountered something far more mystical.
“I was trying to identify shipwreck material based on one of the anomaly readings on Gordon’s charts when I noticed something that stuck out, that shocked me. It was a formation unlike anything I’ve ever seen related to shipwreck material, it was too big for that.”
Miklos added that the objects he discovered were unique and they didn’t look as they were created by nature. “It’s almost like there are five arms coming out of a steep wall cliff and each one of these is the size of a gun on a battleship. They’re enormous and then there’s five over here and five over there, 15 in total,” he said.
There are identical formations in three different areas and they don’t look nature made, they don’t look man-made, certainly nothing I’ve ever seen based on my experience and I have years of experience at doing this, we’ve identified multiple different types of shipwreck material, this doesn’t match or look anything like that.”
Even though Miklos is convinced the structures have an extraterrestrial origin, it is still too quick to draw such conclusions. Therefore, they need to undergo a further analysis in the future.
