Fleet of UFOs Pass the Moon Filmed From an Earth Based Telescope
A sky-watcher using his telescope captures an unknown object as it passes the moon.
It looks like it is a fleet of UFOs, a large Mothership followed by several smaller UFOs. The video captured last month, August 2019, shows the fleet of UFOs passing the moon until they disappear behind the moon.
Brain organoids — also called mini-brains — are 3D cellular models that represent aspects of the human brain in the laboratory. Brain organoids help researchers track human development, unravel the molecular events that lead to disease and test new treatments. They aren’t prefect replicas, of course. Brain organoids do not replicate cognitive function, but researchers can check how an organoid’s physical structure or gene expression changes over time or as a result of a virus or drug.
University of California San Diego researchers have now taken brain organoids one step further, achieving an unprecedented level of neural network activity — electrical impulses that can be recorded by multi-electrode arrays. Using data from babies born up to three-and-a-half months premature, the team developed an algorithm to predict their age based upon EEG patterns. The algorithm then read lab-grown brain organoids the same way, and assigned them an age.
The electrical impulse pattern for nine-month-old brain organoids revealed similar features to those of a premature infant who had reached full-term (40 weeks gestation).
These new optimized brain organoids may make it possible for researchers to study mental illnesses that aren’t caused by or result in overt physiological changes, but instead involve disturbances in brain cell network activity, such as autism or epilepsy. For many of these conditions, there are no relevant laboratory or animal models.
“We couldn’t believe it at first — we thought our electrodes were malfunctioning,” said co-senior author Alysson R. Muotri, PhD, professor of pediatrics and cellular and molecular medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine. “Because the data were so striking, I think many people were kind of skeptical about it, and understandably so.” Muotri led the study with Bradley Voytek, PhD, associate professor of cognitive science in the UC San Diego Division of Social Sciences.
Brain organoid construction begins with a perhaps surprising source: an adult skin sample. In the lab, researchers convert the skin cells into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). Like most stem cells, with the right cocktail of molecular factors, iPSCs can be directed to specialize into any cell type. In this case, they become brain cells — different types of neurons and glia, for example.
At UC San Diego, brain organoids have been used to produce the first direct experimental proof that the Brazilian Zika virus can cause severe birth defects and to repurpose existing HIV drugs for a rare, inherited neurological disorder. Muotri and team also recently sent their brain organoids to the International Space Station to test microgravity’s effect on brain development — and maybe prospects for human life beyond Earth.
In the latest study, Muotri and colleagues optimized every step of brain organoid construction. For example, they started from single cells, rather than the clumps of cells used in most protocols. They also tweaked the precise timing and concentration of factors added to prompt brain cell organization. There wasn’t a single secret ingredient or innovation, he said, but rather several improvements over time.
The optimization paid off in terms of cellular diversity and cellular network activity. For example, the team detected a particular primate-specific neuron, called a cortical GABAergic neuron, that had never before been generated in a lab dish. According to Muotri, these cells are important players in the sophistication of neural networks.
To measure cellular network activity, the researchers grew their newly optimized brain organoids on multi-electrode arrays. The electrodes capture and record electrical impulses, which appear as patterns of waves and spikes in an EEG read-out. With the new protocol, the brain organoids went from producing 3,000 spikes per minute to 300,000 spikes per minute.
In humans, oscillations change with age, as brain cell connectivity develops. Newborn baby brains tend to have periods of rest (no waves) between spikes of electrical activity. Those quiet periods get shorter and shorter as the brain develops. In time, brain activity becomes constant, though levels vary. These brain oscillation patterns often correlate with human cognition and disease states.
Muotri and team compared their brain organoid electrical patterns to a publicly available dataset of 567 EEG recordings from 39 babies born prematurely, between 24 and 38 weeks gestation, and for several weeks after birth. From their initial days to nine months, the brain organoids produced similar levels of electric activity, following a similar pattern: less quiet time, more frequent electrical impulses.
Muotri said he is often asked about the ethical implications of this work, with questions like: “Are we getting too close to re-creating the human brain?” These brain organoids dramatically differ from human brains in many ways, he explained. For example, they are several times smaller than an adult human brain. They do not have hemispheres or blood vessels. And they are not surrounded by protective skulls or connected to other tissues.
“They are far from being functionally equivalent to a full cortex, even in a baby,” said Muotri, who is also director of the UC San Diego Stem Cell Program and a member of the Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine. “In fact, we don’t yet have a way to even measure consciousness or sentience.”
Muotri’s brain organoids can live for years in the lab, but their activity plateaus at nine months. He said a number of reasons might apply, including the lack of blood vessels or the need for additional neurons to continue maturing.
The better brain organoids can replicate the human brain in the lab, Muotri said, the less researchers will need to rely on animal models and fetal tissue to better understand and treat human disease.
“Our work doesn’t yet replace the need for human fetal brain tissue for research, but it’s very attractive as a potential alternative,” he said.

Over the years there have on occasion appeared remarkable and sensational stories of UFO crashes in which the bodies of the occupants have been captured or otherwise obtained by shady government forces. Undoubtedly the most well known of these is the case of Roswell, New Mexico, but while this may be the one most ingrained in popular culture there are other more obscure reports as well. One of these supposedly occurred in a small, backwater town in Texas, where a strange visitor would purportedly come from some other realm to crash and find its final resting place in a crude grave that has been lost and remains a mystery to this day.
The setting for this bizarre story comes amid a UFO flap that was sweeping the nation at the time. From between the years of 1896 and 1897 some outlandish stories were starting to make the headlines. Beginning in California and working their way east there began to be reported numerous accounts of what were described as mysterious, metallic cigar-shaped “airships” appearing in the skies, said to be slow moving and with powerful spotlights that could pierce the night with great precision. The reports were remarkable because this was an era before airplanes, when even balloons and blimps were not a particularly common site in the skies of these regions, so for so many people to suddenly start reporting giant mystery airships of an unknown design was cause for great concern, making the news on a regular basis.
One town that would be visited by one of these ship was the small, rural farming town of Aurora, Texas. This was an unassuming place that would normally be just another dusty town out in the badlands, nothing remarkable about it or particularly special, a place one could pass right on by without really noticing. Yet according to the Dallas Morning News, on April 15, 1897 one of these mysterious ships allegedly appeared to come sailing down out of the sky to go floating over center of town. This would have been an otherworldly, awe-inspiring sight to begin with, but things would apparently get more spectacular still when the ship meandered off and seemed to experience some sort of mechanical difficulties, purportedly colliding with a windmill on the rural property of a Judge J.S. Proctor, and causing a “terrific explosion” that wrecked the windmill, a water tank, and the airship, sending debris raining down everywhere.
When the wreckage was investigated by stunned locals, they apparently found that much of the debris was a strange, light metal that none of them had ever seen before, like a “mixture of aluminum and silver.” According to the report they also found the pilot of the craft sprawled out on the ground dead amongst the wreckage, and although there was no really detailed description it was described as a petite humanoid figure and called “a Martian,” with the report stating of its appearance, “while his remains are badly disfigured enough of the original has been picked up to show that he was not an inhabitant of this world.” On the creature’s person were supposedly sheets of a paper-like material upon which were scrawled some sort of strange symbols like hieroglyphs, the meaning of which was as enigmatic as the pilot and his weird ship. So, now there seemed to be an actual crashed mystery ship and an alien body, so what did the locals do? Well, according to the tale they tossed the wreckage into an old well, sealed it off, and then had the tiny “alien” given a Christian burial in the nearby Aurora Cemetery in a grave with a small, unassuming headstone with a crude etching of the alien’s ship on it. Newspapers at the time ran with this story, and before long it was being talked about all over the place while curiosity seekers came to town to see the area and its cemetery for themselves.
While it might be easy to say that the Dallas Morning Newsreport, which happened to have been written by an Aurora local, must surely have been a made-up joke piece, there were soon numerous other witnesses coming forward to corroborate the story, saying that they had also seen the craft or had even witnessed the crash and the dead alien body, giving weight to the strange account. There was also the odd claim from the new owner of Judge Proctor’s property, a Mr. Brawley Oates, who claimed in 1945 that he had found pieces of the alien ship buried in the well, which had made him ill and forced him to cover the site with cement to seal it away.
As amazing as all of this was at the time, it oddly all sort of faded away and became sort of an obscure historical oddity for decades, the location of the grave forgotten until the account was picked up on by UFO enthusiasts. The case quickly became popular with the UFO hunting crowd in later years, with many investigations of the claims launched over the years. One of the first of these was carried out by Bill Case, an aviation writer for the Dallas Times Herald and the Texas state director of Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), who interviewed surviving witnesses and checked out the cemetery. He would claim in 1973 to have found the gravestone of what he believed to be the alien’s grave, not much more than a rock, really, small in size and half-broken, carrying what appeared to be part of an etching of a “saucer shaped structure.” Using a metal detector, it was determined that there seemed to be large metal pieces buried down there in the ground, and the excited investigator tried to get permission from the city to exhume the grave with no success. Making the story more bizarre was that he would claim that upon his next visit the metal pieces had seemingly disappeared, possibly moved by someone. Not long after this the gravestone itself was stolen, and the location of the body lost once more.
Aurora Cemetery
Another notable investigation was carried out by the television show UFO Hunters in 2008. The team approached the current owner of the Judge Proctor property Tim Oates, nephew of Brawley Oates, the one who had sealed the well. Oates gave them permission for the well to be unsealed, but no pieces of alien wreckage were found and the water tested was fairly normal except for heightened levels of aluminum present. If there had ever been pieces of an alien airship in there they had since been removed and lost. UFO Hunters also investigated Aurora Cemetery, looking for the lost unmarked grave with ground penetrating radar. It seems they found a promising spot and tried to get permission to dig it up but were denied. Without being able to exhume the remains it was impossible to determine if they were human or not, and so the mystery has remained. To this day the location of the grave, or indeed if it ever existed at all, is unknown, although the cemetery itself still bears a plaque listing the alien as one of those interred there.
The tale of Aurora’s UFO crash and its lost alien grave has been much discussed and picked apart in recent years. One prominent idea is that this was all merely a publicity stunt to get more people to come to the town. They had been suffering from a string of calamities such as a disease epidemic, a devastating fire, and lost crops, so it is possible that the original article was a ploy to get people to go there. After all, at the time it doesn’t seem that any one really ever followed up on the original report, and there is also the fact if there was a dead alien of all things, how could it possibly be buried and then its resting place forgotten about? Wouldn’t someone desecrate the grave or even rob it? Other ideas are that the crash really was an alien craft and the grave is either still out there waiting to be found or the body whisked away by the government Roswell style. There has also been the idea that this might have really happened, but rather than some alien or interdimensional traveler it was perhaps some mad scientist testing out his own airship contraption. Considering the verifiable facts are thin and no evidence has ever really been found that any of this happened as described we are left to wonder. Did a UFO crash at Aurora and is there an alien buried in the cemetery there? Whether it is true or not, it is an strange little historical oddity that stokes the imagination.
Two UFOs Seen Over New York During Day, Sep 2, 2019, Video, UFO Sighting News.
Date of sighting: Sept 2, 2019 Location of sighting: Clayville, New York, USA Source:MUFON #103083 This report just came into MUFON today. Two UFOs were seen passing over trees in the small town of Clayville, New York. Clayville has a population of 350-400 residents. The daytime footage is 56 seconds long. If it were CGI often its so hard to make it that people will only make about 10-15 seconds of footage. So this rules out CGI. The UFOs are also matching color with the clouds in the sky as many UFOs have done in past reports. It is however very rare to see them traveling outside the cloud. Usually they dart from cloud to cloud. Scott C. Waring-Taiwan
I found two interesting structures today in a Mars gigapan photo. The two structures appear to be ships that landed at the center of craters. You can see the black shinyness of the objects. One is very round and dome like the other is less thick and more turtle shell shaped. I believe both are ships that can leave at any time. By landing in the craters, astronomers and others who record them will assume that they are mere shadows. But as you see, they are real objects hiding in the craters.
We have accomplished a lot in our (relatively) short time on Earth. We’ve sent humans to the Moon and to live in space, developed massive and sophisticated telescopes to see the farthest reaches of the cosmos, and even rocketed rovers to Mars and probes to the edge of our solar system. However, a number of organizations have taken humanity’s voyage into the final frontier a step farther. NASA, the European Space Agency, and the research collective behind the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) have been working tirelessly to find out if we are alone, once and for all.
Already, a number of projects exist that scan the stars for signs of intelligent life. And despite the fact that many of them have been looking to the skies for decades, we have yet to make contact. And that’s a bit of a problem.
The Paradox That Started It All
To put it mildly, our solar system is very old. In fact, scientists are still figuring out just how old — clues gathered from meteorites suggest it is almost 5 billion years old, and surrounding star systems are likely billions of years older. While interstellar travel still seems to be a distant dream, new technology is born every year that allows us to scan the skies for signals from civilizations in the most distant corners of the cosmos. The number of known alien worlds and star systems discovered through these technologies continues to rise, but our creative methods of listening to space have not yet revealed anything that resembles extraterrestrial communications or civilizations.
Given the size and age of our universe, it seems like we should have made contact. We, of course, have not.
In the early 20th century, physicist Enrico Fermi asked himself a now-famous question: Given the scope of our universe, why haven’t we found intelligent extraterrestrial life yet (or why haven’t they found us)? This is sometimes called the Fermi Paradox or the Great Silence. Scientists have floated many possible answers in the century since Fermi first asked this question. Here are some of the most plausiblereasons why he haven’t made first contact.
Basic probability asserts that alien life must exist. Since we haven’t made contact yet, one theory goes, there must be something barring life from interstellar travel or, at least, barring it from communicating with other alien species. This barrier is known as the “Great Filter,” and it is a force or event that stops a civilization from getting to the aforementioned point of interstellar travel or communication.
If the theory holds true, there are two primary reasons that we haven’t made contact: Because societies kill themselves off before they reach a state advanced enough to explore the stars or interstellar travel is simply not possible on a technological scale. Neither option is particularly pleasing.
And according to the experts behind the work, the filter event is of equal or greater probability than the existence of alien life itself. This is the point argued by Robin Hanson, a research associate at the Future of Humanity Institute at Oxford University, in his discussion of the topic.
No alien civilizations have substantially colonized our solar system or systems nearby. Thus among the billion trillion stars in our past universe, none has reached the level of technology and growth that we may soon reach. This one data point implies that a Great Filter stands between ordinary dead matter and advanced exploding lasting life.
Since we have not been able to detect alien life (or leave the solar system much, for that matter), how far are we from being caught up in some event that would bar us from ever finding aliens? “The easier it was for life to evolve to our stage, the bleaker our future chances probably are,” Hanson writes. In other words, the more life there is in the cosmos, the greater the likeliness that we are about to reach a cataclysmic, life-ending event or reach the cosmic limits of technological advancement.
2. Do Not Disturb The Aliens
Another hypothesis asserts that alien civilizations certainly exist, but they’re simply inactive. That’s the “aestivation hypothesis” (aestivation refers to an organism’s state of prolonged inactivity, similar to a bear hibernating or a frog that buries itself in sand during hot weather), which was put forth by researchers from Oxford’s Future of Humanity Institute and the Astronomical Observatory of Belgrade.
The theory, published in a paper in the Journal of the British Interplanetary Society in 2017, states that aliens may be “hibernating” until the environmental conditions are just right to become active and build their super society. The researchers argue that the laws of thermodynamics directly limit computation, as computing technologies need to be cooled in order to function. This makes it exceedingly difficult to create advanced technologies, as keeping them cool at scale quickly becomes prohibitively difficult. So the aliens are falling into a dormant until, to be blunt, the universe cools.
But distilling the development of a civilization to the kinds of conditions that our current, and somewhat imperfect, models can predict could be reductive. What if intelligent extraterrestrial life has found a way around the thermodynamic conditions that limit its ability to compute? “What if there are other forms of value that can be generated?” the study authors write. If they’re wrong about the relationship between thermodynamics and technology, the aestivation hypothesis would be moot. In this case, perhaps one of the other ideas here holds true.
According to the “Gaian Bottleneck” hypothesis, life needs particular environmental conditions to develop, and they’re not so common. Astrobiologists at the Australian National University penned their explanation to the Fermi Paradox in 2016.
Extinction is “the cosmic default for most life that has ever emerged on the surfaces of wet rocky planets in the Universe,” the researchers wrote. That’s because a planet has to be actually inhabited for it to be habitable, because organisms change the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. A Catch-22 emerges: no life without habitability, no habitability without life.
For alien life to persist, the researchers write, it must hang on: “like trying to ride a wild bull. Most life falls off.” Life can only take place with the presence of an unlikely feedback loop. In this case, Earth is the exception to the rule.
4. Trapped In Deep Oceans
In 2015, after nearly a decade in transit, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft became the first to do a close flyby of Pluto. It offered humanity its first look at its icy surface and raised questions about the possibility of subsurface oceans of water, and lots of methane and nitrogen. These questions put Pluto on a short but growing list of worlds with buried oceans trapped under a thick crust of ice and rock (some of the other worlds are Saturn’s moons Enceladus and Titan, as well as Jupiter’s moons Europa, Callisto, and Ganymede).
Those oceans figure prominently into another theory of where life might be lurking, one that Alan Stern, the principal investigator for New Horizons, touches on. Since buried oceans form a much more stable ecosystem than flowing surface streams, changes such as altering tides and dissipationtake place over a longer time period. A hard outer shell protects hypothetical life in the oceans from a harsh climate and a lethal mix of gases on the surface. “Impacts and solar flares, and nearby supernovae, and what orbit you’re in, and whether you have a magnetosphere, and whether there’s a poisonous atmosphere — none of those things matter,” Stern told Space.com.
Any intelligent alien life that forms in these deep oceans would have to overcome a big hurdle to reach inhabitants of other worlds: drilling through that thick, protective crust. All that work would only get them to the surface — sending signals to other planets become even more unlikely.
For the past eighty years or so, we’ve been listening for signs of extraterrestrial life with radio technology. The Allen Telescope Array, situated 470 km (290 miles) northeast of San Francisco, is one of the biggest — since 2007, 42 dishes have stood at the ready to scan the skies regularly in the hope of receiving radio signals from extraterrestrial life.
But what if extraterrestrial life doesn’t operate on those frequencies? Attempts at contact could simply be passing us by simply because we don’t comprehend the right wavelengths.
Instead of using telescope arrays and scanning the skies for radio signals, Duncan Forgan at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland suggests creating a galactic communications network. The same way we blink our high beams to send a signal to other drivers, we could use the shadow that Earth creates when it passes in front of the Sun to send a message to our fellow inhabitants of the universe. Forgan suggests that we build powerful lasers that contain those encoded messages, which are sent out as we pass in front of the Sun.
“If you want to communicate with someone on the other side of the galactic centre, there’s lots of stuff in the way – dust, stars, a big black hole – so you can take the long way around using the network,” Forgan tells New Scientist. Rather than letting intergalactic messages get lost in the vastness of space, civilizations in different galaxies could agree to use this “galactic communications network” to ensure their messages get to their intended recipients – a unified system to cut through the chatter.
6. We Are Being Impatient
We’ve only been actively reaching out for alien life for about a century — a mere blip in the long history of the solar system and of the universe overall. Evan Solomonides, an astrophysics and mathematics undergrad and researcherat Cornell University, suggests that it could take a while — about 1,500 years from now, to be precise — before we hear from any extraterrestrials.
In a paper submitted to the American Astronomical Society, Solomonides examines the probability of finding life. “We predict that under 1 percent of the galaxy has been reached at all thus far, and we do not anticipate to be reached until approximately half of the stars/planets have been reached.” Solomonides believes that we will have explore around half of the Milky Way galaxy before we hear anything, which will take a while since we’ve barely explored our own galactic neighborhood.
Solomonides is careful to note that the 1,500 years is not a deadline. “This is not to say that we must be reached by then or else we are, in fact, alone. We simply claim that it is somewhat unlikely that we will not hear anything before that time.”

It’s likely Mars was once a water world with rivers, lakes and maybe even an ocean. New research lends support to the possibility that an asteroid slammed into Mars’ ocean 3.5 billion years ago, creating a vast tsunami.
Artist’s concept showing a proposed Mars ocean, some 4 billion years ago. According to some researchers, the young planet Mars then would have had enough water to cover its entire surface in a liquid layer about 500 feet (140 meters) deep. But it’s more likely the liquid would have pooled to form an ocean occupying almost half of Mars’s northern hemisphere, in some regions reaching depths greater than a mile (1.6 km).
It’s now commonly accepted among scientists that Mars used to be a lot wetter than it is today, a few billion years ago. As well as rivers and lakes, there has been growing evidence for a former ocean in the northern hemisphere. Now,new research is lending support to the possibility that an asteroid slammed into that ocean 3.5 billion years ago, creating a mega-tsunami 1,000 feet (309 meters) high!
The new peer-reviewed findings, from Francois Costard, a scientist at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), were first published in the Journal of Geophysical Research Planets on June 26, 2019.
Costard has advocated his theory since 2017 to explain some unusual surface features called Thumbprint Terrain – concentric ridges that look like those in a thumbprint – in Mars’ Arabia Terra region. A very similar theory had also been suggested by two other groups of astronomers back in 2016. In their scenario, the asteroid impact caused not one but twotsunamis.
Part of the Thumbprint Terrain in the Arabia Terra region of Mars, that might have been created by a mega-tsunami 3.5 billion years ago.
Now, Costard thinks he has found the impact crater that the asteroid created. He attempted to trace back the direction that the tsunami would have originated from, away from the Thumbprint Terrain. He narrowed down the possible impact location to 10 craters, before focusing on Lomonosov Crater. The shape of the crater indicates it was under water at the time, and it’s the right age (about 3 billion years old) and size (75 miles – 120 km – in diameter). From the new paper:
We attribute its broad and shallow rim, in part, to an impact into a shallow ocean as well as its subsequent erosion from the collapsing transient water cavity. The likely marine formation of the Lomonosov crater, and the apparent agreement in its age with that of the Thumbprint Terrain unit strongly suggests that it was the source crater of the tsunami. These results have implications for the stability of a late northern ocean on Mars.
If the tsunami scenario is correct, it has implications for the potential habitability of ancient Mars, since that means the northern ocean was still around 3.5 billion years ago. Until now, it has been thought that the planet lost most of its water closer to 3.7 billion years ago. That would allow an extra couple hundred million years in which life could have started. Alexis Rodriguez, a Mars geomorphologist at the Planetary Science Institute (PSI) in Tucson, Arizona, noted that the ocean sediments:
… may be a window into the subsurface habitability of Mars.
Orbital view of Lomonosov Crater, as seen by NASA’s Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft. This crater may have been formed by the asteroid impact that caused the tsunami(s) in the ancient ocean.
There’s still a lot we don’t know about water on ancient Mars and the climate conditions that allowed it to exist on Mars’ surface, something it does not do today. As Paul Byrne, a planetary geologist at North Carolina State University, said:
It’s fair to say that we don’t yet fully understand the history of Mars’s climate, and certainly, the climate models we use will continue to be improved.
While evidence for the possible ocean has grown, it’s still not absolutely definitive. But if the findings regarding the Thumbprint Terrain are accurate, that would be pretty compelling evidence for the ocean. After all, how could you have a tsunami without an ocean?
Even if there was no ocean, though, Mars was still plenty wet, with rain, groundwater, aquifers, rivers and lakes. Early Mars was a lot more like Earth in many ways, but then the planet lost most of its atmosphere – for reasons still being investigated and debated – and the water dried up.
There have been recent findings that suggest liquid water aquifers still exist deep underground, and the Recurring Slope Lineae (RSL) features on some slopes near the equator may be evidence for trickles of briny water on the surface, but otherwise most of Mars’ current water is in the form of ice, at the poles and underground. Landers and rovers have also seen frost, snow and clouds (both water and carbon dioxide types), and orbiters have photographed fog in canyons and craters. But compared to a few billion years ago, Mars is much drier now, and colder, than it used to be. So we can only imagine what it would have been like to be able to stand there and watch the asteroid plummet into that Martian ocean.
Bottom line: Evidence for a possible ancient ocean in Mars’ northern hemisphere has grown in recent years, and now additional evidence suggests that a massive asteroid impact created a mega-tsunami about 3.5 billion years ago.
It's stressful to hang out near the king of the solar system, and Jupiter's moon Iobears the scars of that close relationship on its surface, which is pockmarked by a host of volcanoes.
Those volcanoes form because the planet's massive gravity stretches the interior of Io in a process called tidal heating that melts rock into liquid magma, which eventually builds up enough pressure to burst to the surface. A new study examines three decades of observations of the ebb and flow of thelargest of those volcanoes, which scientists call Loki Patera, looking for patterns that might tie the volcano's schedule of activity to Io's orbit around Jupiter.
"Some people are expecting Io's volcanoes to do something like this and it's not too surprising," lead author Katherine de Kleer, a planetary scientist at the California Institute of Technology, told Space.com. "But then there are other people who think that volcanoes are so complicated that they wouldn't necessarily follow these orbital trends."
De Kleer and her colleagues started by pinning down the details of Io's orbit, which takes about 1.77 Earth days. That's too fast for scientists to develop a nuanced understanding of the orbit's impacts using Earth-based telescopes, which can only observe when Io is in their line of sight.
But there are other, much slower cycles — on the scale of hundreds of days — that are embedded within that orbit, as other moons pull at Io. Those cycles could also influence the tidal heating that the moon experiences.
"It's been this interesting search for patterns in the volcanic activity; tidal heating should produce volcanism that follows specific patterns," de Kleer said. "So you should have volcanoes that are occurring at specific places on the surface and not at other places, and you might expect them to show specific patterns in time also."
To try to make sense of the volcano, the study authors gathered all the observations they could find of Loki over the past three decades. For much of that timeline, scientists' data was sporadic at best, but in 2013, de Kleer and her colleagues made a concerted effort to maximize observations of Loki.
The result is the most detailed look scientists have ever had of the volcano's activity. "It's the dataset which is the most impressive thing," Julie Rathbun, a planetary scientist at the Planetary Science Institute who wasn't involved in the new research but who also studies Loki, told Space.com. "It's really hard to get all the data we want from the ground."
The other factor that de Kleer and her colleagues focused on, the details of Io's orbit around Jupiter, was less challenging to study. But it's not the sort of factor volcanologists might turn to first if they've been inspired primarily by volcanoes closer to home, which aren't strongly affected by any tidal heating.
"A lot of the geology is based on terrestrial geology and there's not a lot of things on Earth that are driven by tides, so it's not something I think people, especially when studying volcanoes, are used to looking for," Rathbun said. "When studying planets and moons, tides and periodicity are among the most obvious things to measure, they're the easiest things to measure."

De Kleer and her colleagues were inspired by cycles scientists have noticed in plumes streaming off one of Saturn’s moons, Enceladus, which seem to brighten and dim in conjunction with that moon's orbit.
They found two cycles in Loki's activity that might be influenced by tidal heating: one lasting 454 days and the other 480 days. Both of those numbers are close to cycles in which Io's orbit is tweaked by the influences of its neighbors.
And realistically, that sort of cycle might make more sense in a volcano than a cycle tied directly to an orbital period as fast as Io's. "Those are the timescales that a volcano can actually evolve on," de Kleer said. She and her colleagues think one potential explanation for what's happening at Loki is that the plumbing of the volcano can't respond to tidal heating at the speed of the 1.77-day orbital cycle, leaving only slower cycles to affect the volcano.
Understanding how Loki works isn't just about understanding one massive planet's one weirdo moon. Earth and Io are the only worlds in our solar system where it's easy to study volcanoes, and Earth's aren't strongly influenced by tidal heating, but scientists believe that phenomenon is a vitally important one in the bigger picture of planetary science, in our solar system and beyond.
"This kind of global-scale tidally driven geophysics is just not something that you have on Earth," de Kleer said. "[Io] is kind of this alien world where we have these processes that you're not able to study on Earth, and if we can study them on Io we can broaden our idea of geophysics more generally so that it's less Earth-centric and encompasses more worlds."
De Kleer and her colleagues are hoping to continue regularly checking on Loki in order to sort out how Io's orbital cycles are governing its activity. They calculated out when the volcano could rumble based on each timeline, and within a few years, they're hoping to gather enough data to pin down a better understanding of Loki's dynamics.
"It's going to be a lot of fun when we get close to the predicted times that the brightenings should occur," de Kleer said. "We can watch and we notice right away in the images when Loki starts to brighten, and that's always fun."
The research is described in a paper published May 8 in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.
One small piece of the Mars methane mystery may have just been solved.
NASA's Curiosity rover has spotted multiple surges of methane in Mars' air over the past few years — most recently in June, when levels of the gas inside the Red Planet's Gale Crater spiked to 21 parts per billion per unit volume (ppbv).
That's far higher than background methane levels on Gale's floor, which Curiosity has determined range seasonally from 0.24 ppbv to 0.65 ppbv.
Scientists don't know what's producing this methane, or where exactly it's coming from. But they're keen to find out, because the gas is a possible sign of life. More than 90% of the methane in Earth's air, for example, was produced by microbes and other organisms.
A recent study may help researchers narrow the hunt. Scientists estimated the methane content of typical Red Planet rocks by analyzing Mars meteorites and native basalt and sedimentary rocks here on Earth — stand-ins for their Martian counterparts.
The team then calculated how much of this methane could be liberated by scouring winds, the dominant form of erosion on modern Mars. (The Red Planet hasn't hosted stable bodies of surface water for more than 3 billion years.)
The researchers determined that, for wind erosion to produce detectable levels of methane in the Martian air, the scoured rocks would have to contain as much methane as the most hydrocarbon-rich shale here on Earth. That's a very unlikely scenario, study team members said.
"What's important about this [finding] is that it strengthens the argument that the methane must be coming from a different source," co-author Jon Telling, a geochemist at Newcastle University in England, said in a statement. "Whether or not that's biological, we still don't know."
Indeed, methane can be produced abiotically as well — by reactions involving hot water and certain types of rock, for example. And it's unclear if the methane detected by Curiosity (and Europe's Mars Express orbiter, which confirmed one of the surges the rover found) is modern or ancient. However it was originally generated, the gas could have been trapped underground for billions of years before bubbling up to the surface.
The cause of the methane spikes is "still an open question," study lead author Emmal Safi, a postdoctoral researcher in the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences at Newcastle University, said in the same statement.
"Our paper is just a little part of a much bigger story," she added. "Ultimately, what we're trying to discover is if there's the possibility of life existing on planets other than our own, either living now or maybe life in the past that is now preserved as fossils or chemical signatures."
The recent paper was published in June in the journal Scientific Reports.

As far as we can tell, Mars is a desolate-looking desert, with no obvious life. Sure, there may still be microbes there, but I think it's safe to say that there is not an advanced civilization living on the Red Planet. But was it always that way? Did Mars once host a bustling civilization, one that perhaps was capable of nuclear warfare? Let's check in with some conspiracy theorists to find out.
"There are literally hundreds of building ruins in a few of NASA's panoramic images. What has happened on Mars? Was it a Nuclear WAR, or perhaps Asteroid hits? The fact of the matter is, that there are many pockets of living humanoids all over Mars," he wrote on a YouTube video showcasing some of these "building ruins."
Let's just put this out there. This is one of the fringiest of fringe conspiracy theories out there. Andrew is probably just a wee bit off his rocker, but he didn't randomly make up the idea that there was civilization on Mars and that it could have died in a nuclear WAR.
A SEPARATE CONSPIRACY THEORIST BELIEVES THE MARTIAN HOLOCAUST AND THE ARK OF THE COVENANT ARE RELATED.
For that, let's take a look at an excerpt from Did Spacemen Colonize the Earth?, a book published by Robin Collyns in 1976. Earlier in the following passage, Collyns argues that there certainly were nuclear explosions on Mars.
"It is difficult to imagine a nuclear explosion on Mars that was not deliberately caused," Collyns writes. "It is very likely that the explosion was made for some constructional purpose. Thus, the [nuclear observations] can serve as one of the proofs in the favor of existence of rational life on mars."
Pseudoscience and wild conjecture are fun, but John Brandenburg, a plasma physicist who got his degree from UC Davis and who has seemingly had a relatively normal, distinguished career for a scientist, has staked his reputation on his theory that Martian life was, perhaps purposefully, destroyed with nukes.
BRANDENBURG'S APPEARANCE ON SUPREME MASTER TELEVISION SCREENGRAB: SUPREME MASTER TELEVISION
In an oddly disconcerting interview with "Supreme Master Television," a thoroughly bizarre station run by the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association cult, Brandenburg notes that Mars had two ancient humanoid civilizations, called Cydonia and Utopia, which had a level of technology similar to that of the ancient Egyptians.
What happened to those Martians? Nukes, he says.
"Two great disasters happened on Mars," he told Supreme Master TV, pointing to Utopia on a map. "One here, and then an asteroid impact happened here, and Cydonia was right in between them. That's puzzling. Why would so many bad things happen in one area of mars that just so happened to have archaeology on it?"
That was back in 2011. Since then, Brandenburg has decided that both disasters were nukes, and possibly "natural" nuclear explosions that could have been caused by some cosmic weirdness like an asteroid hitting radioactive material or something like that. Today, however, he has upped the ante.
This weekend, he's going to present new research at a meeting of the American Physical Society that he says proves that there were indeed nuclear explosions on Mars and that they are consistent with nuclear bomb "airbursts," meaning that there's no possible way these were natural. He said in a statement emailed to me that the evidence he's found is "consistent with mixed fusion-fission explosions."
Here's his case, set to be published in the Journal of Cosmology and Astrophysics, a journal that just published a study about the Big Bang being a hologram:
"The high concentration of Xenon-129 atmosphere, the evidence from Krypton-80 and the detected pattern of excess abundance of Uranium and Thorium on Mars surface, relative to Mars meteorites, first seen by the Russians and now confirmed by the Mars Odyssey Spacecraft Gamma Ray Spectrometer, mean that the surface of Mars was apparently the site of massive radiological events, which created large amounts of signature isotopes and covered the surface with a thin layer of radioactive debris enriched in certain elements relative to its subsurface rocks. This pattern of phenomenon can be explained as due to two large anomalous nuclear explosions on Mars in the past."
So, there's the theory. Reading that, it's possible, until you get to the last line, to think that hey, here's a scientist who thinks something weird happened on Mars—the idea of there being a naturally occurring nuclear explosion on a planet that has radioactive elements on it hasn't been completely ruled out by NASA, after all.
But then, well, he is presenting published, quasi-scientific research suggesting that these were anomalous and not natural. If that's not clear enough, maybe the description and title of his upcoming book Death on Mars: The Discovery of a Planetary Nuclear Massacre will drive it home.
Or we can just read the conclusion to his paper, a preprint version of which he shared with me.
"Given the large amount of nuclear isotopes in Mars atmosphere resembling those from hydrogen bomb tests on Earth, Mars may present an example of civilization wiped out by a nuclear attack from space," he wrote.
"It is possible the Fermi Paradox means that our interstellar neighborhood contains forces hostile to young, noisy, civilizations such as ourselves," he added. "Such hostile forces could range from things as alien as AI (Artificial Intelligence) 'with a grudge' against flesh and blood, as in the movie Terminator, all the way to things as sadly familiar to us as a mindless humanoid bureaucrat like Governor Tarkin in Star Wars, eager to destroy planet Alderann as an example to other worlds."
It is of course worth noting that no high profile scientists have given any credence at all to this theory.
To gauge whether Brandenburg's thoughts have gained any traction with conspiracy theorists, I hunted around for their reactions to his earlier work. Here's what I came across:
"Having seen the evidence presented by Dr. Brandenburg, I feel certain that we need to actively plan for a possible defense against whoever perpetrated the assault on Mars. In fact, as U.S. Space Command has access to all the data that he (and this family) have, as well as all the other pertinent data that exists out there, I'd be amazed to learn that our preparations have not been underway for a very long time."
"There are other possibilities as well. Consider a very high tech civilization where a few folks mis-applied high energy technology and it got out of hand, causing a sever explosion and catastrophe a couple of million years ago. Perhaps a similar thing occurred on earth about 13,000 ya resulting in a cataclysmic event sinking Atlantis and energetically causing the Bermuda Triangle (and other anomalies) to activate. It may not have been "nuclear" and may not have been used in warfare."
"I believe that after a nuclear war broke out on Mars. The surviving Martian race emigrated to the Earth, building the Pyramids and Sphinx to represent the features on mars so that when we were intelligent enough we might discover that there was once a thriving powerful E.T race on mars."
So, there you have it. Were ancient Martians blown up by other aliens? Almost certainly not, but if we are similarly destroyed, at least one dude will be able to say "told you so."
Japan Just Landed a Spacecraft on an Asteroid, And The Photos Are Nuts
MORGAN MCFALL-JOHNSEN, BUSINESS INSIDER
The life of an asteroid is lonely. The rocks spend eons drifting through the cold vacuum of space.
But on Wednesday, the asteroid Ryugu welcomed a special visitor: Japan's Hayabusa-2 probe successfully landed on the asteroid's surface at 21:06 ET (01:06 UTC on Thursday).
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) launched Hayabusa-2 into space in December 2014. Its mission: explore and collect samples from Ryugu, a primitive asteroid half-a-mile in diameter that orbits the sun at a distance up to 131 million miles (211 million kilometers).
The probe reached its destination in June 2018, then got to work making observations, measuring the asteroid's gravity, and rehearsing to touch down.
It blasted the asteroid with a copper plate and a box of explosives in April in order to loosen rocks and expose material under the surface, then successfully landed on Ryugu last night to gather up the rock and soil debris.
The spacecraft captured the images below as it left the asteroid's surface.
"First photo was taken at 10:06:32 JST (on-board time) and you can see the gravel flying upwards. Second shot was at 10:08:53 where the darker region near the centre is due to touchdown," JAXA tweeted.

Ancient rock samples
Asteroids are made of rock and metal, and they take all kinds of quirky shapes, ranging in size from pebbles to 600-mile megaliths. Most of them hang out in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, though Ryugu's orbit sometimes takes it between Mars and Earth.
Some asteroids date back to the dawn of our solar system 4.5 billion years ago, when materials leftover from the formation of planets coalesced into these chunks of rock. In that sense, asteroids can serve as time capsules: What scientists find in those primitive rocks could tell us a lot about the solar system's history.
Ryugu is a C-type asteroid, which means it's rich with organic carbon molecules, water, and possibly amino acids. Amino acids form the building blocks for protein and were essential to the evolution of life on Earth. Some theories posit that an asteroid first brought amino acids here, gifting our planet with the seeds of life, though that's still debated.
About three-quarters of our solar system's asteroids are C-type. Hayabusa-2 aims to be the first mission to bring samples from such an asteroid back to Earth.
The probe initially landed on Ryugu in February and collected shallow samples from just below the surface, but mission managers decided to gather some deeper rock samples as well, since that material hasn't been exposed to harsh weathering from space.
To accomplish that, the probe had to lift back off the asteroid, then blast a 10-meter crater into the surface in order to access to the rock beneath.
So in April, Hayabusa-2 released and detonated a box of explosives in space that shot a copper plate into the asteroid.
Wednesday's landing then made a splash in all that freed-up material.
"These images were taken before and after touchdown by the small monitor camera (CAM-H). The first is 4 seconds before touchdown, the second is at touchdown itself and the third is 4 seconds after touchdown. In the third image, you can see the amount of rocks that rise," JAXA tweeted.
After it touched down, Hayabusa-2 then collected a new set of samples and left Ryugu's surface. At the end of this year, it will begin the 5.5 million-mile (9 million-kilometer) journey home.
The agency's OSIRIS-REx mission reached a much smaller C-type asteroid, Bennu, in August 2018. But the probe didn't land on Bennu's surface; instead, it's been orbiting at a record-breakingly close distance.
The plan is for OSIRIS-REx to approach Bennu's surface in July 2020, but the spacecraft will only make contact for about five seconds. During that quick instant, it will blow nitrogen gas to stir up dust and pebbles and collect the samples. If all goes according to plan, it will return that material to Earth in 2023.
The asteroid's surface has turned out to be rougher than expected, however, and debris flying off the space rock can pose a threat to the orbiting spacecraft. So NASA is still choosing its sampling site.
But Bennu has already made a significant finding: In December, before it entered orbit around Bennu, the probe discovered that the asteroid harbored ingredients for water (oxygen and hydrogen atoms bonded together).
Though Bennu is too small to host liquid water, it's possible that water could have once existed on its parent asteroid, which Bennu broke away from between 700 million and 2 billion years ago.
Though NASA's asteroid-exploration mission will collect a larger quantity of sample material than Japan's, the JAXA team hopes that comparing the samples from two different sites on the same asteroid will yield novel information about how long-term space exposure changes asteroids over time.
Both Bennu and Ryugu could also teach scientists a lot about the history of the solar system and potentially – if they contain organic materials – about the origins of life on Earth.
On June 5-6, 2012, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory collected images of one of the rarest predictable solar events: the transit of Venus across the face of the Sun.
This article was originally published at The Conversation. The publication contributed the article to Space.com's Expert Voices: Op-Ed & Insights.
Just next door, cosmologically speaking, is a planet almost exactly like Earth. It's about the same size, is made of about the same stuff and formed around the same star.
To an alien astronomer light years away, observing the solar system through a telescope, it would be virtually indistinguishable from our own planet. But to know the surface conditions of Venus – the temperature of a self-cleaning oven, and an atmosphere saturated with carbon dioxide with sulfuric acid clouds – is to know that it's anything but Earth-like.
So how is it that two planets so similar in position, formation and composition can end up so different? That's a question that preoccupies an ever-growing number of planetary scientists, and motivates numerous proposed Venus exploration efforts. If scientists can understand why Venus turned out the way it did, we'll have a better understanding of whether an Earth-like planet is the rule – or the exception.
I'm a planetary scientist, and I'm fascinated by how other worlds came to be. I'm particularly interested in Venus, because it offers us a glimpse of a world that once might not have been so different from our own.
A once-blue Venus?
The current scientific view of Venus holds that, at some point in the past, the planet had much more water than its bone-dry atmosphere suggests today – perhaps even oceans. But as the Sun grew hotter and brighter (a natural consequence of aging), surface temperatures rose on Venus, eventually vaporizing any oceans and seas.
With ever more water vapor in the atmosphere, the planet entered a runaway greenhouse condition from which it couldn't recover. Whether Earth-style plate tectonics (where the outer layer of the planet is broken into large, mobile pieces) ever operated on Venus is unknown. Water is critical for plate tectonics to operate, and a runaway greenhouse effect would effectively shut down that process had it operated there.
But the ending of plate tectonics wouldn't have spelled the end of geological activity: The planet's considerable internal heat continued to produce magma, which poured out as voluminous lava flows and resurfaced most of the planet. Indeed, the average surface age of Venus is around 700 million years – very old, certainly, but much younger than the multi-billion-year-old surfaces of Mars, Mercury or the Moon.
The exploration of Planet 2
The Venus-as-a-wet-world view is just a hypothesis: Planetary scientists don't know what caused Venus to differ so much from Earth, nor even if the two planets really did start off with the same conditions. Humans know less about Venus than we do about the other inner solar system planets, largely because the planet poses several unique challenges to its exploration.
For example, radar is needed to pierce the opaque, sulfuric acid clouds and see the surface. That's a lot trickier than the readily visible surfaces of the Moon or Mercury. And the high surface temperature – 470 degrees Celsius (880 degrees Fahrenheit) – means that conventional electronics don't last more than a few hours. That's a far cry from Mars, where rovers can operate for more than a decade. In part because of the heat, acidity and obscured surface, then, Venus hasn't enjoyed a sustained program of exploration over the past couple of decades.
That said, there have been two dedicated Venus missions in the 21st century: the European Space Agency's Venus Express, which operated from 2006 to 2014, and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's Akatsuki spacecraftcurrently in orbit .
Humans haven't always ignored Venus. It was once the darling of planetary exploration: between the 1960s and 1980s, some 35 missions were dispatched to the second planet. The NASA Mariner 2 mission was the first spacecraft to successfully carry out a planetary encounter when it flew past Venus in 1962. The first images returned from the surface of another world were sent from the Soviet Venera 9 lander after it touched down in 1975. And the Venera 13 landerwas the first spacecraft to return sounds from the surface of another world. But the last mission NASA launched to Venus was Magellan in 1989. That spacecraft imaged almost the entire surface with radar before its planned demise in the planet's atmosphere in 1994.
The Magellan mission was launched from Atlantis' cargo bay on May 4, 1982. The spacecraft's high gain antenna is visible at the top of the image.

Back to Venus?
In the last few years, several NASA Venus missions have been proposed. The most recent planetary mission that NASA chose is a nuclear-powered craft called Dragonfly, destined for Saturn's moon Titan. However, one proposal to measure the composition of the Venus surface was selected for further technology development.
Some 30 years after NASA set course for our hellish neighbor, the future of Venus exploration looks promising. But a single mission – a radar orbiter or even a long-lived lander – won't solve all the outstanding mysteries.
Rather, a sustained program of exploration is needed to bring our knowledge of Venus to where we understand it as well as Mars or the Moon. That will take time and money, but I believe it's worth it. If we can understand why and when Venus came to be the way it is, we'll have a better grasp of how an Earth-size world can evolve when it's close to its star. And, under an ever-brightening Sun, Venus may even help us understand the fate of Earth itself.

One of the key determinants of which worlds can host life may lie in the motion of their oceans.
Right now, calculating that motion is a challenge. After all, scientists can't just dip their toes in the water. But new research pulls together information about four of the most intriguing ocean worldsto inform models of what their subsurface oceans might be doing.
"These oceans are really interesting in and of themselves," Krista Soderlund, an expert on planetary fluid dynamics at the University of Texas at Austin and author of the new research, told Space.com. "You often are first drawn to a satellite by what it looks like on its surface, but I think that what is going on beneath the surface is just as exciting and interesting."
And according to her new calculations, there is indeed plenty going on beneath the surface of the solar system's icy moons. Soderlund focused on Jupiter's moons Europa and Ganymede and on Saturn's moons Enceladus and Titan.
In each case, she tried to understand how factors like the world's rotation rate, the thickness of its ice shell and the density of its seawater might affect how much water moves around the hidden oceans.
Her calculations suggest that the oceans on Enceladus and perhaps Titan could host currents in alternating bands and particularly strong heat flow near the poles. Europa, on the other hand, because its spin is less of a factor, seemed to sport the most noticeable heat flow near its equator. (Scientists don't know enough about Ganymede to quite settle on a specific ocean current model.)
Predicting such activity inside icy moons is a promising indicator for those who wonder whether such oceans could be home to life. "When we think about ocean dynamics, it's really important for habitability," Alyssa Rhoden, a scientist at the Southwest Research Institute focused on ice shells, told Space.com. Rhoden wasn't involved in the new research but is co-leading a new network for ocean worlds research. "It gives us a sense of how much that swirling and whirling is going on and how you get nutrients from one place to another place, how you move energy from one place to another place."
More swirling and whirling means better odds that the ingredients of life can actually collide. But despite the work Soderlund has put into trying to understand these hidden oceans, the result is still an echo of what could be happening on these worlds.
It's the universal challenge of modeling as a scientific approach: a model will never be quite as intricate or comprehensive as reality. "All of our models are wrong, they're all wrong," Rhoden said. "Because we can't actually model everything."
A visualization of ocean surface currents on Earth.
(Image credit: NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center)
But getting more data about these moons and their hidden oceans will fine-tune these models, Rhoden said, and that doesn't necessarily require directly sampling the oceans — although needless to say, scientists would love to do that.
Long before such feats are possible, a different mission, scientists can turn to NASA's Europa Clipper and the European Space Agency's Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE), both scheduled to launch in the 2020s.
Soderlund is on the team behind one of Europa Clipper's instruments, the Radar for Europa Assessment and Sounding: Ocean to Near-Surface device, or REASON. Because an ocean's dynamics affect the ice shell above it, REASON data should help scientists vet some of their hypotheses about Europa's ocean activity, she said.
If her prediction that heat flow is strongest in Europa's ocean at the equator is correct, for example, the moon's ice shell should be thinner there. It's an approach that turns the massive annoyance of an ice sheet blocking a direct view of your research subject into a tool and recognizes the ways these strange oceans must be connected to their surroundings — just as is true here on Earth.
"The fact that we're predicting they have strong ocean currents in itself is pretty exciting, since then it's not just a really passive body of water, it actually has some really cool, intriguing and fun characteristics," Soderlund said. "It's kind of like our own Earth's ocean in that respect, where there's just a lot going on."
The research was described in a paper published on July 29 in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.
Video – 3D bioprinter patches up wounds using a patient’s own skin cells
While the advent of 3D printers is commonly thought of as a revolution for manufacturing, it could have huge benefits for medicine as well. To help patch up large wounds that might normally require a skin graft, researchers at Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine (WFIRM) have developed a new bioprinter that can print dual layers of a patient’s own skin directly into a wound.
The idea of 3D printing skin has been in development for a few years. In 2014, a prototype machine was unveiled that could print large sheets of human skin that could then be cut to size and grafted onto a patient. The tech evolved over the years into more detailed machines and eventually a handheld device that works like a tape dispenser for skin.
The new machine looks like a cross between those last two. It’s much larger than the handheld device, but it’s still relatively portable in a hospital setting. The machine can be wheeled to a bedside, and a patient lies underneath the printer nozzle while it goes to work.
Like earlier devices, the new printer uses an “ink” made up of a patient’s own cells, to minimize the risk of rejection. First a small biopsy of healthy skin is taken, and from that two types of skin cells can be isolated: fibroblasts, the cells that help build the structure to heal wounds, and keratinocytes, which are the main cells found in the outermost layer of skin.
Larger amounts of these cells are grown from the biopsy sample, then mixed into a hydrogel to form the bioprinter ink. And here’s where it differs from previous bioprinters – rather than just applying the new skin over the injury, the new machine first uses a 3D laser scanner to build a picture of the topology of the wound. Using that image, the device then fills in the deepest parts with the fibroblasts, before layering keratinocytes over the top.
That technique mimics the natural structure of skin cells, allowing the injury to heal faster. The team demonstrated that it works using mouse models, observing that new skin began to form outward from the center of the wound. Notably, it only worked when the ink was made using the patient’s own cells – in other experiments the tissue was rejected by the body.
“If you deliver the patient’s own cells, they do actively contribute to wound healing by organizing up front to start the healing process much faster,” says James Yoo, co-author of the paper. “While there are other types of wound healing products available to treat wounds and help them close, those products don’t actually contribute directly to the creation of skin.”
The researchers say that the next steps involve conducting clinical trials in humans. Eventually, the new device could be put to work treating burn victims, patients with diabetic ulcers and other large wounds that have trouble healing on their own.
TRUMP TWEET ACCIDENTALLY REVEALS SECRETS ABOUT US SPY SATELLITES

In recent tweet, U.S. President Donald Trump included a smartphone picture of Iran’s Semnan Launch Site One — a location where U.S. authorities believe a rocket failure took place.
Donald J. Trump✔@realDonaldTrump
The United States of America was not involved in the catastrophic accident during final launch preparations for the Safir SLV Launch at Semnan Launch Site One in Iran. I wish Iran best wishes and good luck in determining what happened at Site One.
But astronomy experts managed to glean much more from the simple image. By analyzing the angle at which the image was taken, they apparently figured out which spy satellite took it and when.
Dutch astronomer and asteroid tracker Marco Langbroek suggests the image could’ve been taken by USA 224 — an extremely secretive recon satellite which cost around two billion dollars — a day before Trump tweeted the image.
I measured the semi-major and semi-minor axes of the ellipse (the obliguely viewed circular platform). The viewing angle is then derived by minor=major*cos(angle) --> so find the matching angle. That yielded nominal 43.97 deg. That value matches 09:44:23 UT and azimuth 194.7.
Dr Marco Langbroek@Marco_Langbroek
So the position of the satellite at 09:44:23 was taken, and in STK I let the viewq from the satellite point towards the launch platform. That yielded this. It is a very good match so there is no doubt in my mind that it is an image taken by USA 224.
The suspected KH-11-type optical imaging satellite launched in 2011, but has been visible to amateur astronomers and trackers since then.
“They’re super bright in the sky and are easy to find,” Michael Thompson, a graduate student in astrodynamics at Purdue University, told NPR.
Oh Doubt
But the extremely high resolution of the image has some astronomers puzzled. Calculations put the resolution at an estimated 10 centimeters per pixel, while the newest commercial satellites take images at only 30, according to Quartz.
“The level of detail in the image is incredible,” wrote Langbroek in a blog post. “These are high resolution optical satellites that resemble the Hubble Space Telescope, but look down to Earth instead of to the heavens.”
New Delhi: A huge asteroid will eventually hit humanity and there will be no way out, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has predicted. A monster asteroid called Apophis, named after an Egyptian “God of Chaos”, will come dangerously close to the Earth, about 19,000 miles (31,000 km) above the surface.
“Great name! Wouldn’t worry about this particular one, but a big rock will hit Earth eventually & we currently have no defence,” Musk tweeted late on Monday. On April 13, 2029, a speck of light will streak across the sky, getting brighter and faster.
At one point it will travel more than the width of the full Moon within a minute and it will get as bright as stars. But it won’t be a satellite or an aeroplane — it will be a 1,100-foot-wide, near-Earth asteroid called “Apophis” that will potentially cruise harmlessly by Earth.
“The Apophis close approach in 2029 will be an incredible opportunity for science,” said Marina Brozovic, a radar scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, who works on radar observations of near-Earth objects (NEOs).
“We’ll observe the asteroid with both optical and radar telescopes. With radar observations, we might be able to see surface details that are only a few meters in size,” she added.
It’s rare for an asteroid of this size to pass by the Earth so close. Although scientists have spotted small asteroids, on the order of 5-10 meters, flying by Earth at a similar distance, asteroids the size of Apophis are far fewer in number and so do not pass this close to Earth as often.
The asteroid, looking like a moving star-like point of light, will first become visible to the naked eye in the night sky over the Southern Hemisphere, flying above Earth from the east coast to the west coast of Australia.
It will then cross the Indian Ocean, and by the afternoon in the eastern US, it will have crossed the equator, still moving west, above Africa. “Current calculations show that Apophis still has a small chance of impacting Earth, less than 1 in 100,000 many decades from now, but future measurements of its position can be expected to rule out any possible impacts,” said NASA recently.
Apophis is a representative of about 2,000 currently known Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs). “It is possible that there will be some surface changes, like small avalanches,” Davide Farnocchia, an astronomer at JPL, said in the blog post.

For the first time ever, ESA has performed a 'collision avoidance manoeuvre' to protect one of its satellites from colliding with a 'mega constellation'#SpaceTraffic
On Monday, the European Space Agency (ESA) tweeted that it had to perform a “collision avoidance” maneuver to avoid a crash with one of SpaceX’s Starlink satellites.
SpaceX knew about the potential collision, Holger Krag, head of the ESA’s Space Debris Office, told Forbes — but refused to do anything about it and wouldn’t say why.
According to the Forbes story, the U.S. military noticed that one of SpaceX’s Starlink satellites had a 1 in 1,000 chance of colliding with the ESA’s Aeolus Earth observation satellite.
The Pentagon informed both agencies of the potential collision, and although the ESA’s satellite had been occupying the region for nine months longer than the Starlink satellite, SpaceX told the ESA via email that it didn’t plan to take any action to prevent the collision and didn’t offer any explanation as to why.
This prompted the ESA to perform the avoidance maneuver, which it does regularly to avoid collisions with dead satellites or space junk — but rarely to avoid active satellites and never before to prevent a collision with a mega constellation of them. But the fracas raises the possibility that similar maneuvers might become more regular in the future.
While SpaceX’s Starlink mega constellation currently consists of fewer than 60 satellites, it could eventually launch upwards of 12,000 as part of its plan to deliver broadband internet to the entire globe — and that could dramatically increase the risk of collisions.
“We are not upset by them saying [they wouldn’t move],” Krag told Forbes. “My concern is how often will we have such events in the future? These are just two satellites. Now they will add several thousand, and they will also be disposed and end up at various altitudes. And there’s no rule or law on how to react, it’s all goodwill.”
To prepare for a future in which potential Starlink crashes are far more common, the ESA is now exploring the use of artificial intelligence to automate its collision avoidance systems, tweeting that such a system is “becoming necessary to protect our space infrastructure.”
According to Engadget, the Starlink satellites are already equipped with automated collision avoidance systems, so perhaps SpaceX’s decision to do nothing was part of a plan to see if those systems would work as intended, by automatically adjusting the satellite’s path without SpaceX manually intervening.
That could explain why SpaceX didn’t provide the ESA with a reason for its inaction — it’s hard to imagine the agency would’ve been OK with SpaceX risking the ESA’s $560 million satellite in order to test its own AI.
Asteroid warning: Space rock comparable to dinosaur killer is heading Earth’s way
A MASSIVE asteroid comparable to the massive space rock which brought the dinosaurs’ reign on Earth to an end is hurtling towards Earth, and scientists have confirmed it is “potentially hazardous”.
The asteroid known as 1990 MU is currently completing another orbit of the Sun, and in 2027 it could come perilously close to Earth. Asteroid 1990 MU is between 4-9 kilometres in diameter and on June 6 2027, it is set to come within 0.03 AU - astronomical unit. One AU is the distance between the Earth and the Sun, so coming within just 0.03 AU is perilously close.
For reference, Mars – the planet which humans are hoping to reach – is around 0.5 AU.
The asteroid is classed as a potentially hazardous asteroid, which according to NASA has the “potential to make threatening close approaches to the Earth.”
According to data from NASA, 2019 OK was large – an estimated 187 to 427 ft (57 to 130) wide – and hurtling fast along a path bringing it within only 45,000 miles (73,000km) of Earth when it flew by in recent weeks.
This was less than one-fifth of the distance to the Moon and what the Royal Institution of Australia’s Professor Alan Duffy described as “uncomfortably close.”

An asteroid strike 66 million years ago put an end to the dinosaurs
(Image: GETTY)
That asteroid would have been big enough to wipe out a city, so 1990 MU could be truly devastating.
Asteroid 1990 MU is up to nine kilometres in diameter, which puts it in the same ball-park as the space rock which put an end to the dinosaurs.
That space rock is believed to have been between 10-15 kilometres wide and came crashing into what is now Mexico 66 million years ago marking the beginning of the end of the dinosaurs.
Research from the University of Glasgow has found up to three quarters of life on Earth was wiped out from the asteroid, with the dinosaurs dying out within a few centuries.
The space rock caused a cloud of dust to fill the air which blocked out the sun, leading to drastic and sudden climate change that ultimately created major food shortages across Earth, leading to the death of bigger animals, and allowing smaller creatures, such as mammals, to thrive in their absence.
Now, a comparable asteroid is heading Earth’s way.
While the asteroid will be close within the next decade, it will be even closer in 2058, when it comes within 0.02 AU - less than three million kilometres.
Scientists estimate that a life-ending asteroid, such as the one which put an end to the dinosaur’s reign, would collide with Earth every 100 million years or so.
But asteroids can strike at any moment and there is always a very slim chance a massive civilisation-ending space rock could hit sooner.
For that reason, many claim global authorities should have a plan in place – but it seems they do not.
NASA employee Robert Frost, who works as an instructor and flight controller for the space agency according to his bio on Q+A website Quora, said the best thing governments could do is tell the public to “hunker down”, as there would be little which can be done to prepare for the inevitable.
Mr Frost was writing in response to the question: “If it were discovered that an asteroid was going to wipe humanity out, say in 2 months, how would the governments of the world respond?”
The value of asteroids
(Image: EXPRESS)
He said: “That’s a tough one. Movies tell us they would keep it secret. There’s a lot of sense to that. Mass panic can be more dangerous than the actual event.
“But my experience working in government is that the government really isn’t good at keeping anything secret unless it begins within a secretive part of the culture, like the military.
“Something like this would likely be first discovered by someone that couldn’t spell ‘security clearance’. It would be evident to astronomers all over the world.
“Feeling helpless, the government would likely just tell us to ‘hunker down’ and duct tape our window seams.
“Then the Democrats would blame it on the Republicans for ignoring global warming and the Republicans would blame it on the Democrats for not praying in school.”
Asteroid Alert: NASA, ESA To Team Up To Save Humans By Crashing Spaceship Into THIS Massive Space Rock

Asteroids approach towards the Earthdue to the gravitational forces that affect them. Asteroids are small, rocky objects that orbit the Sun and these space rocks can bring tsunamis, shock waves and flattening winds that could be catastrophic. It is said that Earth will reach to its end one day and one of the possible reason for this could be an asteroid. No one knows what our future will be. These days a large number of asteroids are hovering all around the Earth and we might get hit too sooner or later. However, in a bid to save our planet and humans as well, NASA is stepping-up plans to deliberately crash a spaceship into anasteroid when it joins forces with the European Space Agency (ESA) next week.
According to a report published by Daily Star, scientists from NASA and ESA have planned to test whether it is possible to deflect the orbit of potentially-deadly asteroids. It is worth mentioning here that the mission will launch in 2022 and involves two spacecraft, one to smash into the space rock and the other to measure the results of the collision.
Experts will meet in Italy to fine-tune the plan. So far, it involves crashing NASA spacecraft DART — or Double Asteroid Impact Test — into the asteroid. Then ESA's Hera will survey DART's crash site and analyse the direction of the asteroid's new path, Daily Star reported.
Queen guitarist and astrophysicist Brian May explained how the mission would be conducted using the might of NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA) and other asteroid specialists.
“HERA is going to show us no one has ever seen before. This ESA mission will be humanities first-ever spacecraft to visit a double asteroid, Didymos. “This asteroid is typical of the thousands that pose an impact risk to our planet.” express.co.uk quoted Brian May as saying.
“Imagine a mountain in the sky with another rock about the size of the great pyramid swinging around it, that is Didymos. Just the seemingly tiny moon would be big enough to destroy a city if it were to collide with the Earth. But we are going to find out if it is possible to deflect it,” Brian May added.
He further said, “HERA is led by a multinational team of scientists and engineers. Right now all we have is many years and theories but HERA will revolutionise our understanding of asteroids and how to protect ourselves from them. Then ESA comes in, HERA will map the impact crater left by DART and measure the mass of the asteroid.”
“Knowing this mass is key to determining what is inside and knowing for certain whether we would be able to deflect it. Next come our briefcase-sized CubeSats, if you think of HERA like an aeroplane, cubists will operate more like drones,” Brian concluded.
According to a report published by spacetelescope.org, there are more than 7 lakh asteroids that have been found in space. Asteroids are mainly found in an area called the ‘main belt’, between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.

Some residents of what’s been called “America’s Bermuda Triangle” have poked fun at the mention of paranormal activity or monster sightings in their South Shore communities.
Others have gone on record and sworn by what they’ve witnessed or encountered, be it strange lights in the sky, hairy creatures in the swamp, or a spirit in disheveled clothes lingering on the side of the road and waiting to hitch a ride.
While people’s opinions vary about the unexplained phenomena, on this they seem to agree: News that a major network could be making a series based on the legends of “The Bridgewater Triangle” — an approximately 200-square-mile region of Southeastern Massachusetts that has long been linked to the supernatural and macabre — is exciting, to say the least.
In an exclusive last week, Deadline.com reported that FX has acquired a short story titled “The Bridgewater Triangle” and plans to develop it into a television show.
Details are as thin as a spectral being for now. But Noah Hawley, the force behind the television series “Fargo,” and his company 26 Keys Productions, are reportedly executive producing what’s being described as an “apocalyptic horror thriller.”
The show would center on three siblings who must unite and confront a confluence of paranormal events, Deadline.com reported.
A spokesperson for FX confirmed in an e-mail to the Globe that the information in the Deadline story is correct but said the network has “no further information at this time.”
“The Bridgewater Triangle” refers to an area bordered by the points of Abington, Freetown, and Rehoboth. More than a dozen other municipalities fall within its mystical bounds.
The name for the uncanny zone was first coined by famed cryptozoologist Loren Coleman more than 40 years ago and is a play on the mysterious section of the Atlantic Ocean where boats and airplanes have reportedly vanished, known as the Bermuda Triangle.
Coleman, founder and director of the International Cryptozoology Museum, in Portland, Maine, said while going to school full time in the 1970s, he began investigating “creature reports” from the area.
He later mapped out where the strange activities had been reported. Eventually, he connected the dots and realized all of the alleged sightings — UFOs, birdlike creatures, large snakes, man-beasts — were entrapped by the space.
“It was very obviously a triangle,” Coleman said. “I was just putting all of the pieces of data together, and that’s why I came up with the word ‘Bridgewater Triangle,’ just to give a handle to people that want to read about it, or wanted to talk about it.”
The name later appeared more officially in his 1983 book, “Mysterious America.”
The Hockomock Swamp, part of a network of wetlands, creeks, rivers, and ponds that span thousands of acres, is perhaps the most infamous part of the triangle.
According to Globe archives, the Wampanoag tribe gave the spot, which falls within Bridgewater, Easton, Norton, Raynham, Taunton, and West Bridgewater, its name, meaning “place where spirits dwell.”
The habitat has been called the “beating heart” of the triangle and is rich with history. According to the Massachusetts Historical Commission, “the archaeological sites in the vicinity of this wetland complex are known to span a period of 9,000 years.”
Stories about Hockomock’s “inhabitants” have thrived for generations and include sightings of “vicious, giant dogs with red eyes seen ravenously sinking their fangs into the throats of ponies; a flying creature that resembled a pterodactyl, the dinosaur that could fly; Native-American ghosts paddling canoes; and glowing somethings hovering above the trees,” the Globe reported in a 2005 story about the swamp.
Reports of a Bigfoot-like creature wandering the thickets and brambles have also been a constant theme throughout the years.
The announcement that a show will probably cast a spotlight on the Bridgewater Triangle has people who live within it — as well as those who have spent time researching or exploring it — looking forward to seeing how its myths and legends could come alive on the small screen.
“I’ve certainly heard about the FX show,” Marilee Kenney Hunt, Bridgewater’s town clerk, said in an e-mail to the Globe, “and shared the news with family members across the country.”
In a private Facebook group called “Bridgewater Residents,” which boasts 18,000 members, people expressed interest in being part of the project if filming takes place in the state.
“If ANYONE sees a casting call for this, PLEASE let me know,” one person wrote on the page recently.
Another said, “Put me in coach.”
When a Globe reporter posted in the group, asking whether there’s talk in town about the series, more than 100 comments followed, with a handful of people offering to tell their own stories.
Filmmaker Aaron Cadieux, who wrote and codirected a 2013 documentary with local actor Manny Famolarecalled “The Bridgewater Triangle,” said he’s hopeful about the series.
“This will raise the national profile of the Bridgewater Triangle,” he said in a telephone interview. “We were surprised, but very pleasantly surprised [by the news].”
While the duo’s 90-minute film has no direct affiliation with the story FX apparently acquired, Cadieux offered up their expertise on the subject matter, if needed.
“We would be happy to talk to them or consult with them in any way that we can. It’s just exciting,” he said. “Selfishly, I hope people will find their way to our documentary.”
Coleman, the cryptozoologist, said he hasn’t been in contact with FX either, but he’d also be willing to talk about his ties to the region and the title he coined.
“That would be fun,” he said. “It’s something that if they do a good job writing it or acting in it, I’d watch it — because I came up with the name.”

Then, he went to Mars where he spent 17 years at a military base. After a major loss of human lives during a battle between the military forces and native people of Mars, he was deployed back to the moon where he spent his final three years as a military pilot.
He tells his story with vivid and captivating detail. Randy Cramer: Space Traveler and Mars Colonist Randy Cramer, who initially told his story under the pseudonym “Captain Kaye,” says he was only four years old when he began training for the SSP through a program called Project Moon Shadow.
He was one of approximately 300 girls and boys who were “covertly drafted” to participate in the program. Girls comprised only 20 percent of the group, a male/female ratio that remained consistent during his entire 20 years with the SSP. Cramer recalls that during his childhood, he would be taken from his bed at night.
Even though he would be gone for days or even weeks, he would be returned to his bed and travel back in time to when he was taken. He would wake up as though no time had passed, feeling like he had just had a really, really long dream.”

Planet X Warning Really Revealed On Russian TV? Revisited
Of course there is great debate about Planet X. Even Graham Hancock has said a roaming planet has come thru before. But one thing I see all the time in comments is that this was announced on Russian TV. So I decided to revisit this to see what interesting comments we could find from our commenters.
Russia has Been warning us ever since 2012, they don’t hide it. Share… this video must be shared with max number of people! make your part now, please share it! Because the Government Cover-up!
Important: Before you JUDGE, watch the whole video. NIBIRU PLANET-X EMINENT APPROACH! MUST SEE!! URGENT VIDEO PUBLIC UTILITY! GOV COVER UP!
The asteroid belt is huge. If it used to be one planet, it must have been a very massive giant. If it was destroyed by “Nibiru” then Nibiru must be many times more massive to have survived the impact without becoming part of the same asteroid belt. Which means they must have both been rock giants, and this is unusual. Our giants are gas planets. Tin Tin
Fleet of UFOs passing the moon filmed from an Earth based telescope
A sky-watcher using his telescope captures an unknown object as it passes the moon.

Stone Disk Found In Coal Mine In Russia, Video, UFO Sighting News.
Location of discovery: Russia Date of discovery: 2015 I believe what they have found is a UFO drone ship. These smaller drones are used as scouts for keeping larger ships safe. Often a UFO will have these small scouts or even smaller baseball size orbs rotating around the UFO like a protective shield. Many such UFO disks have been found around the world, always heavy and appear to be made of stone. However I do not believe its really stone, but a condensed nano bot micro material that strengthens the UFO like stone, but actually is a complex network. I believe if we looked at its material under an electron microscope, we would find evidence of micro alien tech. Scott C. Waring
News states:
A mysterious boulder resembling a flying saucer was unveiled on Sunday after it was unearthed at a coal mine in the Belovo District, Kemerovo at the end of January. The disc is 1.2m (3.9ft) in diameter and weighs approximately 200kg (441lb).
Glowing White UFO Seen Over Ukraine Aug 2019, Video, UFO Sighting News.
Date of sighting:August 2019 Location of sighting: Ukraine Source: Email Report This was sent into me from an Youtube subscriber living in the Ukraine. The video shows a glowing object moving across the sky. The object has no wings, windows, tail. It keeps its reflective white appearance the whole time. But there are a few seconds where this UFO looks triangular in shape. That could mean its a TR3B in the hands of the Russians. Russia and China have their own share of recovered UFOs, also NASA worked with the Russians during the covert Apollo 18, 19, 20 missions...which recovered a lot of alien technology from some crashed ships on the moon. This could be a secret military craft. Scott C. Waring
UFO Sighting Video Shows a Bright UFO Splitting into Two
A strange video has shown a UFO splitting into two separate flying objects allegedly over the East China Sea. The eyewitness said she felt joy and happiness at the sight that caused her to burst into tears.
The clip was reportedly recorded around 6:20 pm on Monday near Shurijo, Japan from the top of a mountain.
From the peak of the mountain, Lotus Raelian observed the mysterious object hovering for some 10 minutes before decided to record it on video. The footage starts with the sight of a singular bright flying in the far distance above the East China Sea.
Seconds later, the brightness of the light dims and seems to separate into two lights.
The two faintly lit objects slowly move further apart as the schoolgirl is heard starting to cry.
The girl said she had a strong feeling to go to the top of a Shurijo mountain located just beside their school.
Then she saw something hovering in the sky that was as bright as a star. The strange object was still there after around 10 minutes, according to the witness.
After that moment, she said that the bright star began to move and shine blue and red colors.
Then she took out her phone and began to record a video as the bright star started to move and become two parts.
The witness said that she was so surprised and cried with joy and happiness of seeing a flying machine first hand.

The gas giant planet Jupiter could have collided with a “proto-planet” approximately 10 times as big as Earth and swallowed it whole during the early days of the Solar System, a group of researchers say.
A joint group of scientists from China, Switzerland, Japan and the US created a model that seeks to explain the discrepancies in Jupiter’s structure discovered by NASA’s Juno spacecraft. According to gravitational readings, the planet’s core is less dense and more extended than expected.
"This is puzzling," said Andrea Isella, a co-author of the study. "It suggests that something happened that stirred up the core, and that's where the giant impact comes into play."
Published in Nature magazine, the new model suggests that the strange core structure may be a result of an impact with a huge rocky or icy “planetary embryo” in the first few million years of Jupiter’s formation.

A colossal, head-on collision between #Jupiter and a still-forming planet in the early solar system, about 4.5 billion years ago, could explain surprising readings from
"The only scenario that resulted in a core-density profile similar to what Juno measures today is a head-on impact with a planetary embryo about 10 times more massive than Earth," said Shang-Fei Liu, the study's lead author.
“A sufficiently giant impact between a large planetary embryo and the proto-Jupiter could have shattered its primordial compact core and mixed the heavy elements with the inner envelope,” the study reads.
Isella explains that, after the supposed impact, it took billions of years for the proto-planet’s heavy material to settle back into Jupiter’s dense core.
"It sounded very unlikely to me," Isella admitted, adding that it was "like a one-in-a-trillion probability.”
The team also ran alternative scenarios, such as weather erosion or a presumption that Jupiter’s core always contained gas, but the impact model came with the results that matched the Juno reading best, The Daily Mail report said.
“Models of such a scenario lead to an internal structure that is consistent with a diluted core, persisting over billions of years,” the study reads.
Based on their research, scientists speculate that similar collisions were not rare during the early days of the Solar System.
"We suggest that collisions were common in the young Solar System and that a similar event may have also occurred for Saturn, contributing to the structural differences between Jupiter and Saturn,” the study says.
For the first time, heavy metal gases like magnesium and iron have been detected floating away from an exoplanet, a planet orbiting a distant sun. Why? Because the planet – which is about as big as Jupiter – is orbiting perilously close to its star.

Exoplanets – worlds orbiting other stars – have been discovered in a wide variety of types and sizes, from small rocky worlds to sizzling hot gas giants orbiting close to their stars. The phrase “music of the spheres” comes to mind, an ancient philosophical concept that regarded the movements of the sun, moon and planets as a form of music. While that phrase tends to evoke thoughts of classical melodies, one exoplanet in particular seems to fit the heavy metal genre better.
The planet – WASP-121b, a hot Jupiter 900 light-years from Earth – orbits so close to its star that its upper atmosphere is a sizzling 4,600 degrees Fahrenheit (2,500 Celsius). The gravity of its host star has distorted the planet into the oblong shape of an American football. First discovered in 2015, the planet is 1.8 times the mass of Jupiter.
The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) detected gas escaping from the planet, iron and magnesium gas, dubbed “heavy metals.” These new peer-reviewed results were published on August 1 in The Astronomical Journal.
Evidence suggests that the lower atmosphere of WASP-121b is so hot that iron and magnesium remain in a gaseous state. They stream to the upper atmosphere, where they can escape into space on the coattails of hydrogen and helium gas. This is the first time that such gases have been observed escaping a hot Jupiter exoplanet. As David Sing, a researcher at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, said:
Heavy metals have been seen in other hot Jupiters before, but only in the lower atmosphere. So you don’t know if they are escaping or not. With WASP-121b, we see magnesium and iron gas so far away from the planet that they’re not gravitationally bound. The heavy metals are escaping partly because the planet is so big and puffy that its gravity is relatively weak. This is a planet being actively stripped of its atmosphere.

How does this process occur? First, the star itself is hotter than the sun, and ultraviolet light from the star heats the planet’s upper atmosphere. The escaping iron and magnesium gas may also help to heat the atmosphere even more, according to Sing:
These metals will make the atmosphere more opaque in the ultraviolet, which could be contributing to the heating of the upper atmosphere.
Not only is the planet’s atmosphere severely affected, but so is the planet as well. It is actually approaching the point where it could be ripped apart by the star’s gravity. Right now though, it has been stretched into a football-like shape. WASP-121b offers a rare observation opportunity for scientists, as Sing noted:
We picked this planet because it is so extreme. We thought we had a chance of seeing heavier elements escaping. It’s so hot and so favorable to observe, it’s the best shot at finding the presence of heavy metals. We were mainly looking for magnesium, but there have been hints of iron in the atmospheres of other exoplanets. It was a surprise, though, to see it so clearly in the data and at such great altitudes so far away from the planet.
According to Drake Deming, an astronomer at the University of Maryland:
This planet is a prototype for ultra-hot Jupiters. These planets are so heavily irradiated by their host stars, they’re almost like stars themselves. The planet is being evaporated by its host star to the point that we can see metal atoms escaping the upper atmosphere where they can interact with the planet’s magnetic field. This presents an opportunity to observe and understand some very interesting physics.
Hot Jupiters this close to their host star are very rare. Ones that are this hot are even rarer still. Although they’re rare, they really stand out once you’ve found them. We look forward to learning even more about this strange planet.
These observations of WASP-121b are part of the Panchromatic Comparative Exoplanetary Treasury Program (PanCET) survey. It is the first large-scale ultraviolet, visible, and infrared comparative study of 20 different exoplanets, ranging in size from super-Earths (several times Earth’s mass) to Jupiters (over 100 times Earth’s mass).

By studying WASP-121b and other hot Jupiters, scientists can learn more about how planets lose their primordial atmospheres. The atmospheres of still-forming planets tend to consist of the lighter-weight gases hydrogen and helium. But those atmospheres can be stripped away as a planet moves closer to its star. As Sing explained:
The hot Jupiters are mostly made of hydrogen, and Hubble is very sensitive to hydrogen, so we know these planets can lose the gas relatively easily. But in the case of WASP-121b, the hydrogen and helium gas is outflowing, almost like a river, and is dragging these metals with them. It’s a very efficient mechanism for mass loss.
WASP-121b is also an ideal target for future observations from the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope, which will be able to examine the atmosphere for water and carbon dioxide, and help provide a more complete analysis of all the chemical elements in the atmosphere. That data will help scientists better understand how worlds like hot Jupiters form, as well as planetary systems in general.
Artist’s concept of WASP-121b, which astronomers are describing as a heavy metal exoplanet. The planet is so hot that gases of magnesium and iron – called “heavy metals” because these elements’ atomic weights are greater than those of hydrogen or helium – are escaping its atmosphere. Meanwhile, the host star’s gravity is pulling on the planet and its atmosphere, stretching it into a football shape.
Bottom line: WASP-121b is a kind of hot Jupiter exoplanet rarely seen, a world so hot and so close to its star that heavy metal gases are being stripped from its atmosphere and the planet itself is being stretched into the shape of a football.
The question of whether or not we are alone in the universe has hung over us for a surprisingly long time. Since pretty much the point when we became aware of other planetary bodies and something other than this earth we stand on we have contemplated it and looked to the sky to wonder on it. One of the first targets of this fascination with the worlds beyond our own was the moon, already long the focal point of myth and legend, and it is here where an intriguing and odd history of aliens and proposed space travel unfolds in a very weird sequence of historical oddities.
Back in the 17th century the thought of actually traveling to space was so beyond us that it wasn’t even really science fiction yet, or even a thing at all. We simply did not understand the planets and space in general enough to even fully comprehend it at the time, although there were more and more discoveries being made all of the time, notably those of Galileo and his newfangled telescope. It was at around this time that a man named John Wilkins would be born in 1614, and his childhood obsession with the voyages of great explorers such as Christopher Columbus, Francis Drake, and Ferdinand Magellan would shape what he was to become later in life.
Wilkins would go on to complete his studies at Oxford in both theology and natural philosophy, also studying at Cambridge, and he had shown a lifelong fascination with the field of astronomy, which was still very much in its infancy at the time. He would achieve quite a good amount of respect and high standing, later even marrying the sister of self-styled Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland, Oliver Cromwell. He had also become a full-fledged vicar and clergyman, an interesting but not uncommon at the time matching of religion and science, and would be one of the founding members of the the Royal Society, as well as Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, gaining great prominence as a natural philosopher and author.
Wilkins was, in short, one of the most highly regarded intellectuals and academics of his time, and in this capacity he made quite a few groundbreaking propositions. Among his many wild ideas were that a universal language should be instated amongst the world’s scientists, a universal system of weights and measurements should be used, and a revolutionary way to record time accurately by use of a system of pendulums. Some of these ideas were quite groundbreaking and forward thinking, such as the standard system of length and weight that predated the metric system by over a hundred years. He was also responsible for all manner of strange and ingenious inventions, but perhaps his most out there achievements sat firmly with his longtime fascination with space and the life that he believed was out there within it.
Wilkins believed that not only did other living creatures inhabit the moon and beyond, but that it was possible to create flying machines that were capable of reaching these places, in an age when this had been previously not even a thing. These were heady, revolutionary concepts at the time, but this did not stop Wilkins from penning sophisticated and in-depth treatises on his ideas entitled The Discovery of a World in the Moone in 1638, and A Discourse Concerning A New Planet in 1640. Some of his wild ideas on the properties of the moon were fascinating and well ahead of their time, many of them quite accurate in retrospect, such as that the moon created no light of its own, but rather merely reflected the sun’s light, and that it was constantly hit by meteorites that left impact craters and orbited Earth in the same way that the Earth orbits the sun. In fact, Wilkins was describing how bodies orbit each other and stay aloft long before Isaac Newton was contemplating such things. Of course he was wrong about quite a few things, such as erroneously concluding that the moon had its own atmosphere, but for the era his predictions were extraordinary.
Not only this, but he also believed that trade could actually be established with these proposed beings, and his first target was the moon and its inhabitants, which he called “Selenites,” and with who he seriously began plans to establish trade with. To this end he began drawing out plans for a flying ship to reach it, very much like a sailing vessel in basic design, but with wings instead of sails. In Wilkins’ opinion, the craft could be outfitted with feathered wings and powered by a combustion engine, which would by his (unfortunately wrong) calculations manage to escape Earth’s gravity, which he viewed as merely a type of magnetism. For this planned mission, Wilkins made no plans to provide food rations for passengers, as he was convinced that a zero gravity environment would not generate hunger, and he also did not account for any oxygen that would be needed by these early astronauts, as it was thought they would be able to breathe up there just fine, with him writing, “space travelers would soon grow accustomed to the purer air breathed by angels who inhabit the vast space between planets.” Looking back with what we know now it all seems kind of silly, but Wilkins was very serious about building this craft, and went about drawing up plans with fellow astronomer Robert Hooke, with all of the enthusiasm of two little kids making a boat out of a mattress to take them around the world. It is extraordinary, as remember that this was an age when vehicles like cars and airplanes were not even on our radar yet, not to be invented for hundreds of years.
Unfortunately for these two complete and utter early space geeks, reality began to set in before they could get their death trap off the ground. With new discoveries in the nature of vacuum and magnetism, Wilkins realized that gravity and magnetism were different, and that his calculations were therefore way off. It occurred to both Wilkins and Hooke that this whole space travel thing wasn’t going to be as easy, or cheap, as they had thought, and that the technology to do so simply wasn’t feasible yet. They would both go on to other work, and Wilkins would pass away in 1672 at the age of 58, having never realized his dream of trading with those lunar aliens or of even getting to space period. Yet although Wilkins ultimately failed he is still one of the first pioneers of the field of space travel, and one of the first to seriously contemplate how to achieve it, giving him a place in history as a great daydreamer and innovator.
Despite the fact that Wilkins’ ideas on space travel and trade with aliens on the moon were dashed, the idea that there were indeed living beings on the moon endured, and that brings us up into the 1800s, when in 1835 there appeared a series of six articles in the New York Sun newspaper, authored by a “Dr. Andrew Grant,” which were fantastical to say the least. The articles claimed that the great astronomer Sir John Herschel had discovered concrete proof of life on the moon, which was apparently not only inhabited, but absolutely teeming with life. The articles, supposedly reprinted from a publication called The Edinburgh Journal of Science, claimed that all manner of incredible animals and entities had been discovered on the moon, as well as lush vegetation, oceans, forests, and rushing rivers and even an intelligent civilization of bat-like flying humanoids.
When the series of articles appeared the populace was spellbound, with everyone looking up at the moon and imagining what wonders were up there, and even such imminent scientific establishments as Yale University were lured in by it all, but, as you must no doubt have surmised by now, it was all hogwash. Grant was a completely fictitious character, and the whole thing had been merely a satire of ideas on life on the moon and publicity stunt to increase sales conjured up by Sun reporter Richard Adams Locke. Even Herschel had had no idea about his name being used for such a stunt, although he at first reportedly found it very amusing. What has gone on to be called “The Great Moon Hoax” had other ramifications, such as many people refusing to believe that it was a hoax even after the paper admitted it, citing conspiracies, as well as none other than Edgar Allen Poe accusing the paper of plagiarizing his work The Unparalleled Adventure of One Hans Pfaall.
Although increased understanding about how space, planets, and the moon work increasingly squashed all debate on whether life exists up there on the moon, it is still an interesting peek into another bygone era when the amazing possibility of life on the moon was still alive and people had a sense of wonder about it all. It marked the beginning of our longing to reach out past our own planet to space and beyond, to see what amazing sights await us, and whether the moon has or ever had organic life as we know it. It is a chapter in our species’ desire to go out over new horizons and connect with other life in this cold universe we spin about, currently totally alone.
Rather than leaving home young, as expected, star siblings are more likely to stick together in long-lasting, string-like star groups, according to a new study of data from ESA’s Gaia spacecraft.
Stars are born in huge clouds of gas and dust in space. As we look out into our Milky Way galaxy, we see some stars that are still hanging out in their original star families; we say these stars reside in open star clusters. Our sun was surely born in such a cloud, whose stars have now dispersed into the Milky Way at large, moving with the general stream of stars around the galaxy’s center. The search for the sun’s lost siblings is ongoing. But what if we could recognize not just our sun’s siblings but sibling stars across a wide expanse of the Milky Way? In fact, we can. The amazing Gaia spacecraft of the European Space Agency (ESA) has given us that ability. And, contrary to what astronomers believed – rather than leaving home young, as expected – the star siblings revealed by Gaia have been found to stick together in long-lasting star groups. Astronomers are currently referring to these groups of star siblings as “strings.”
An August 28, 2019, statement from ESA explained why information about star families or strings has been so long in coming:
Exploring the distribution and past history of the starry residents of our galaxy is especially challenging as it requires astronomers to determine the ages of stars. This is not at all trivial, as ‘average’ stars of a similar mass but different ages look very much alike.
To figure out when a star formed, astronomers must instead look at populations of stars thought to have formed at the same time – but knowing which stars are siblings poses a further challenge, since stars do not necessarily hang out long in the stellar cradles where they formed.
A face-on view of star families – sibling stars born from a single cloud of gas – in our Milky Way galaxy, within 3,000 light-years of our sun (center of image). The Milky Way is 100,000 light-years wide. Stars in clusters today appear as dots. Co-moving groups – stars born together and still moving together in space – appear as thick lines. The diagram is based on data from the astoundingly useful second data release of the European Space Agency’s Gaia mission.
Marina Kounkel of Western Washington University is lead author of the new peer-reviewed study, which was publishedAugust 23, 2019, in The Astronomical Journal. She explained:
To identify which stars formed together, we look for stars moving similarly, as all of the stars that formed within the same cloud or cluster would move in a similar way.
We knew of a few such ‘co-moving’ star groups near the solar system, but Gaia enabled us to explore the Milky Way in great detail out to far greater distances, revealing many more of these groups.
Kounkel used data from Gaia’s second data release in April 2018 to trace the structure and star formation activity of an area of space surrounding our solar system, and to explore how this changed over time. This data release lists the motions and positions of over a billion stars with a precision made possible only since Gaia’s launch in 2013. Gaia has been using the unglamorous-sounding tool of astrometry to do something quite amazing. The satellite is charting a three-dimensional map of our galaxy, pinpointing the locations, motions, and dynamics of Milky Way stars, along with additional information about many of these stars. I can’t emphasize enough how Gaia is making possible a view of the Milky Way we never had before. As regards this study, ESA said:
The analysis of the Gaia data, relying on a machine-learning algorithm, uncovered nearly 2,000 previously unidentified clusters and co-moving groups of stars up to about 3,000 light years from us – roughly 750 times the distance to Proxima Centauri, the nearest star to the sun.
The study also determined the ages for hundreds of thousands of stars, making it possible to track stellar ‘families’ and uncover their surprising arrangements.
Around half of these stars are found in long, string-like configurations that mirror features present within their giant birth clouds.
We generally thought young stars would leave their birth sites just a few million years after they form, completely losing ties with their original family – but it seems that stars can stay close to their siblings for as long as a few billion years.
And here’s another interesting fact about these star strings, as revealed by Gaia:
The strings also appear to be oriented in particular ways with respect to our galaxy’s spiral arms – something that depends upon the ages of the stars within a string. This is especially evident for the youngest strings, comprising stars younger than 100 million years, which tend to be oriented at right angles to the spiral arm nearest to our solar system.
The astronomers suspect that the older strings of stars must have been perpendicular to the spiral arms that existed when these stars formed, which have now been reshuffled over the past billion years.
Kevin Covey, also of Western Washington University, is a study co-author. He said:
The proximity and orientation of the youngest strings to the Milky Way’s present-day spiral arms shows that older strings are an important ‘fossil record’ of our galaxy’s spiral structure.
The nature of spiral arms is still debated, with the verdict on them being stable or dynamic structures not settled yet. Studying these older strings will help us understand if the arms are mostly static, or if they move or dissipate and re-form over the course of a few hundred million years – roughly the time it takes for the sun to orbit around the galactic center a couple of times.
Further Gaia releases, including more and increasingly precise data, are planned for the coming decade, providing astronomers with the information they need to unfold the star-formation history of our galaxy. Timo Prusti, Gaia project scientist at ESA, said:
Gaia is a truly ground-breaking mission that is revealing the history of the Milky Way – and its constituent stars – like never before.
If you’ve been following Gaia, you’ll agree!
An edge-on view of stellar groups and strings in our Milky Way galaxy.
Bottom line: A new analysis of data from Gaia’s second data release has revealed that star siblings – stars born from the same cloud of gas and dust in space – stick together in long-lasting star groups moving around the center of the Milky Way. Astronomers are referring to these groups as “strings.”
In January 2017, all U.S. aircraft carriers were recalled to their home ports for unknown upgrades. There has been much speculation about what the carriers had been secretly equipped with given the growing threats posed by hypersonic cruise missiles against which the carriers appeared defenseless. The 2018 release of a Navy patent provides a compelling answer to what had happened during the recall. The carriers were secretly equipped with powerful electromagnetic “Tesla” shields that could neutralize all hypersonic and ballistic missile threats.
In January 2017, several news reports appeared describing the recall of all US aircraft carriers to home ports and how for the first time none were actively serving anywhere in the world. On December 30, 2016, a Fox News report explained:
For the next week, not only will there be no U.S. Navy aircraft carrier in the Middle East, but there will be no American aircraft carriers deployed at sea anywhere else in the world, despite a host of worldwide threats facing the United States… the absence of a deployed U.S. Navy aircraft carrier, long seen as a symbol of American power projection, is noteworthy. It is believed to be the first time since World War II that at least one U.S. aircraft carrier has not been deployed.
When the Navy was questioned by Fox News about the recall of all its aircraft carriers in the Middle East, a Navy spokesperson said:
“We are not going to discuss the timing of operational movements of carrier strike groups into and out of the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility,” said Capt. Terry Shannon, a U.S. Naval Forces Central Command spokesman, in a statement to Fox News. Centcom is tasked with control over all U.S. forces in the Middle East and Afghanistan.
The lack of explanation for the recall led to much speculation including some concluding that the recall was done to set up the US for a major false flag attack:
In what can only be described as a disproportionate appropriation of U.S. Navy assets, a blatant breach of standard protocol, and a possible set up for a false flag operation — the entire U.S. Navy aircraft carrier group, 10 active carriers, have returned to port and are now all sitting ducks.
By the end of January 2017, the Navy began redeploying its aircraft carriers and the recall was quickly forgotten. In order to understand why the aircraft carriers were recalled and what they may have been upgraded with, we need to consider the growing threat posed by cruise missiles capable of hypersonic speeds.
I first wrote about cruise missiles developed by Russia and China and sold to countries like Iran that could threaten aircraft carrier battle groups back in November 19, 2007. In an article titled: “The Neoconservative Agenda to Sacrifice the Fifth Fleet – The New Pearl Harbor,” I explained:
Iran has sufficient quantities of cruise missiles to destroy much or all of the Fifth Fleet which is within range of Iran’s mobile missile launchers strategically located along its mountainous terrain overlooking the Persian Gulf. The Bush administration is deliberately downplaying the vulnerability of the Fifth Fleet to Iran’s advanced missile technology which has been purchased from Russia and China since the late 1990’s. The most sophisticated of Iran’s cruise missiles are the ‘Sunburn’ and ‘Yakhonts’. These are missiles against which U.S. military experts conclude modern warships have no effective defense.
I further described the capabilities of the cruise missiles sold to Iran as follows:
The SS-N-22 or ‘Sunburn” has a speed of Mach 2.5 or 1500 miles an hour, uses stealth technology and has a range up to 130 miles. It contains a conventional warhead of 750 lbs that can destroy most ships. Of even greater concern is Russia’s SSN-X-26 or ‘Yakhonts’ cruise missile which has a range of 185 miles which makes all US Navy ships in the Persian Gulf vulnerable to attack. More importantly, the Yakhonts has been specifically developed for use against Carrier groups and has been sold by Russia on the international arms trade.
Over the subsequent decade, cruise missile payloads and speeds have increased to the extent that Russia has now developed missiles that can travel over five times the speed of sound. At his February 20, 2019 State of the Nation address, President Vladimir Putin public announcedthe existence of the first hypersonic cruise missiles, which the Pentagon determined had been under development and testing since 2015:
“This is a hypersonic missile called Tsirkon. It will have the speed of Mach 9, it has a range of 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) and can hit navy or land targets.”
In December, CNBC learned that a U.S. Intelligence report had highlighted testing of the Tsirkon hypersonic system, noting that five tests had been carried out by the Russian military since 2015.
Putin has previously described Russia’s hypersonic prowess as “invincible” and accused “those who have fueled the arms race over the last 15 years” of failing to contain Russia.
China is not far beyond Russia in developing cruise missiles capable of hypersonic speeds, and currently has a number of hypersonic ballistic missiles that can be deployed against aircraft carriers. On January 2019, Elizabeth Shim from UPI reported:
China plans to deploy midrange ballistic missiles capable of destroying U.S. aircraft carriers by 2020, according to multiple state media reports.
China Times and others reported Tuesday the Dongfeng-17 is a midrange rocket that could be used to sink an entire U.S. aircraft carrier, if it is fired eight times.
The threat posed by hypersonic cruise and ballistic missiles to aircraft carriers and their support ships is well understood by senior Navy leaders and researchers. According to a March 6, 2018 news story published in The Examiner:
The era of the American aircraft carrier as the premier embodiment of military might could be ending unless the U.S. develops defenses for the next generation of highly maneuverable, super-fast hypersonic weapons under development by Russia and China, the Pentagon’s top weapons researcher said Tuesday.
Michael Griffin, undersecretary of defense for research and engineering, said China is spending billions to develop a non-nuclear version of the weapons that could render U.S. aircraft carriers vulnerable to attack.
Despite the threat posed by increasingly sophisticated and powerful hypersonic missile systems under development by major geopolitical rivals, the US Navy has nevertheless gone ahead with building and deploying a new generation of aircraft carriers beginning with the USS Gerald Ford, which is scheduled to formally begin active service in 2022.
This brings us back to the question of why did the US Navy recall all its aircraft carriers in early 2017, and forge ahead with plans to build the larger and more expensive Ford-class carriers?
For an answer, we need to review a 2018 patent awarded to a Navy scientist, Salvatore Cezar Pai, which is titled: “The High Energy Electromagnetic Field Generator” (HEEMFG). In a previous article, I briefly described his patent as an electromagnetic shield. The patent’s summary describes one of the goals of the HEEMFG is to protect the Earth from potential asteroid impacts:
It is a feature of the present invention to provide a method and apparatus for deflecting or destroying a large asteroid and preventing a possible collision with earth. The present invention may also deflect or destroy any other type of object.
It is the HEEMFG’s ability to “deflect or destroy” fast traveling objects which directly pertains the question of why the Navy recalled all its aircraft carriers and is moving ahead with building more Ford-class carriers:
It is a feature of the present invention to provide a method and apparatus for generating an impenetrable defensive shield to Sea and Land as well as Space-based military and civilian assets, protecting these assets from such threats as Anti-Ship Ballistic Missiles, Radar Evading Cruise Missiles, Top Attack for Main Battle Tanks (land and sea based systems), as well as counteracting the effects of solar-induced Coronal Mass Ejections or defending critical military satellites in an ASAT role (space based system). [Source]
The development of an impenetrable electromagnetic shield to defend a target from fast traveling objects such as asteroids and missiles is very similar to ideas first proposed by the Serbian inventor Nikola Tesla back in the 1930’s, Tesla proposed an electromagnetic shield based on scalar wave principle which has been explained as follows:
Scalar Waves can be warped into a dome around objects, such as cities or houses… Such a Scalar Wave force field is generally known as a Tesla Shield, and it would be analogous to the “shields” referred to in the popular “Star Trek” series. Tesla Shields have a definite defensive application, and could not in any way be used for offensive purposes (although a platoon of soldiers charging into a Tesla Shield would be instantly disintegrated). The only defense from a blast of a Scalar Wave Howitzer would be a Tesla Shield.

The scientist behind the HEEMFG is no rogue inventor but works at the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) on advanced technology concepts. On two occasions, Dr. James Sheehy, the Chief Technology Officer of the Naval Aviation Enterprise, a US Navy affiliated organization, has intervened on behalf of Dr. Pais’ patent applications deeming them “operable”to skeptical patent examiners.
Brett Tingley, writing for The Drive, has given detailed commentaries on Pais’ patents, and has speculated about why the Navy wanted to make public what appeared to be technologies that would be highly classified if they worked. He speculated that the patent applications may be disinformation intended to deceive China and Russia:
[I]t’s certainly possible that these patents are part of some ongoing information campaign designed to make America’s competitors question what types of black budget research is currently underway at NAWCAD and other research organizations. With so many revolutionary new aerospace technologies on the brink of deployment, perhaps this is an attempt to essentially “weaponize” patents and sow doubt among our adversaries and even inject confusion among the American populous.
An alternative explanation offered by Tingley is that the patents are feasible and the Navy is seriously contemplating developing them based on UFO sightings such as the 2004 Tic Tac incident tracked by Navy pilots:
[M]aybe this is the Pentagon’s grasping attempt to try to make sense of and emulate mysterious and seemingly highly advanced craft that are supposedly being increasingly observed near its own aircraft, vessels, and installations. Maybe the Chinese competition claim is just a placeholder for the unknown.
There is yet another, even more compelling, explanation that Tingley did not consider. The patents are based on technologies that have already been successfully developed by the Navy in a classified program to protect current and future aircraft carriers from hypersonic weapons. After all, the Navy has a long track record in studying electromagnetic means for protecting its ships as evidenced by the 1943 Philadelphia Experiment.
Even more intriguing is recent insider and documentary evidence that the Navy has developed a secret space program that deploys kilometer long spacecraft that would almost certainly have needed such electromagnetic protection from space debris and asteroids encountered during deep space travel. It’s plausible that Tesla shields that have long been used on the Navy’s secret space program which were deployed in the early 1980’s, and this technology has recently been made available for the Navy’s conventional aircraft carriers given recent advances in hypersonic weapons development.
If Tesla shields have already been developed in a highly classified Navy space program, then it is reasonable to conclude that the HEEMG patent is based on electromagnetic shield concepts that Drs. Pais and Sheehy have been officially briefed about. The existence of Tesla shield technology provides a cogent explanation for why all aircraft carriers were mysteriously recalled in January 2017, the secret upgrades they received, and why Ford-class supercarriers are going to be built.
All this leads to the startling conclusion that U.S. Navy can protect all its aircraft carriers from hypersonic cruise and ballistic missiles using electromagnetic Tesla shields. Even more significant is the potential of such electromagnetic shields to protect entire cities and even the Earth as mentioned in the HEEMFG patent. The HEEMFG patent is cogent evidence that we are about to witness a profound military revolution from the development of offensive to defensive weapons systems where civilian populations are protected rather than sacrificed in strategic military planning.
The Webb Telescope is Hubble’s successor, due to launch in 2021. A new study says it’ll be powerful enough to search for life signatures in the atmospheres of the 7 Earth-sized planets in the TRAPPIST-1 system, just 39 light-years away.
Artist’s concept of the James Webb Space Telescope as it’ll appear once it’s launched to Earth-orbit in 2021. Want to see how the actual telescope looks now? See the bottom of this post.
Only 39 light-years from Earth – right next door, cosmically-speaking – there’s a solar system with seven Earth-sized rocky planets. The system is called TRAPPIST-1. All of its seven planets are intriguing, and three of them orbit in their star’s habitable zone, where temperatures could allow liquid water to exist on them.
These worlds have been the subject of much study in the past few years, but there are limits to what current telescopes can learn more about them. What’s more, there’s been a debate about whether the James Webb Space Telescope – Hubble’s successor, scheduled for launch in March of 2021 – will be powerful enough to detect life signs at the distance of these Earth-sized planets, if indeed life signs do exist there. But now a new study says, yes, the Webb will be able to analyze their atmospheres for biosignatures. What’s more, the study says, this analysis could be done in only a year, although clouds in the planets’ atmospheres might pose a problem.
The new paper was first published on June 21, 2019 in The Astronomical Journal, and the study was led by Jacob Lustig-Yaeger, an astronomy student at the University of Washington.
According to Lustig-Yaeger:
The Webb telescope has been built, and we have an idea how it will operate. We used computer modeling to determine the most efficient way to use the telescope to answer the most basic question we’ll want to ask, which is: Are there even atmospheres on these planets, or not?
Artist’s concept of the 7 Earth-sized exoplanets in the TRAPPIST-1 planetary system.
All seven of the known planets in the TRAPPIST-1 system are rocky, and of a similar size to Earth. They all orbit close to their star, but since the star a red dwarf and cooler than the sun, that means that three of the planets are still in the star’s habitable zone, where temperatures could make liquid water possible, depending on other factors such as type of atmosphere. It is expected that most or all of the planets have atmospheres, but that isn’t known for certain yet. The Webb telescope will be able to confirm that, and analyze those atmospheres for possible biosignatures, gases like oxygen or methane that could indicate life on the surfaces. According to Lustig-Yaeger:
There is a big question in the field right now whether these planets even have atmospheres, especially the innermost planets. Once we have confirmed that there are atmospheres, then what can we learn about each planet’s atmosphere, the molecules that make it up?
The study suggests that the Webb telescope should be able to detect and analyze any atmospheres fairly quickly, in a year or so. Since the planets are all close to their star, that means their transit times – the time it takes for a planet to cross in front of its star from our viewpoint – are relatively short. The Webb should be able to confirm the atmospheres (or not) in 10 transits or less.
Artist’s concept of TRAPPIST-1e, which scientists think has the best chance of having a habitable atmosphere and an ocean like Earth.
This does also, however, depend on whether those atmospheres have clouds. If a planet had a thick cloudy atmosphere like Venus, it could take up to 30 transits to confirm it. So the Webb telescope could still do it, it would just take longer, Lustig-Yaeger said:
But that is still an achievable goal. It means that even in the case of realistic high-altitude clouds, the James Webb telescope will still be capable of detecting the presence of atmospheres, which before our paper was not known.
The James Webb Space Telescope’s capability of detecting the atmospheres of smaller rocky planets is exciting, since other telescopes haven’t been able to yet. It’s a lot easier with gas giant planets like Jupiter, but difficult with smaller planets when they are so far away.
Another possibility is that the Webb will find evidence of water that the planets lost when the system was much younger and the star was much hotter. In such cases, an atmosphere could contain abiotic oxygen – not created by life – that might be a false positive signal of active biology. Scientists would need to determine if the oxygen is biotic or abiotic.
The James Webb Space Telescope will be invaluable for studying rocky planets like Earth, astronomers say, and many more of these rocky worlds are being discovered all the time in the vast space of our Milky Way galaxy. It is estimated that there are billions of such worlds in our galaxy alone, and the Webb might provide the first compelling evidence for life on one (or more) of them. Even if it doesn’t, though, it will help to revolutionize our understanding of these planets. As noted by astronomy doctoral student Andrew Lincowski:
By doing this study, we have looked at: What are the best-case scenarios for the James Webb Space Telescope? What is it going to be capable of doing? Because there are definitely going to be more Earth-sized planets found before it launches in 2021.
The TRAPPIST-1 planetary system is unique among such systems as known so far, with seven Earth-sized exoplanets. Could any of them have life? They are ideal candidates for further study by the Webb, which may be able to help answer that intriguing question in the relatively near future. As Lustig-Yaeger added:
It’s hard to conceive in theory of a planetary system better suited for James Webb than TRAPPIST-1.
On August 28, 2019, NASA announced that the two halves of the James Webb Space Telescope have now been successfully connected. The telescope is being assembled at Northrop Grumman’s facilities in Redondo Beach, California.
Bottom line: For the first time, scientists will be able to study the atmospheres of the seven Earth-sized exoplanets in the TRAPPIST-1 system, using the James Webb Space Telescope, Hubble’s successor, due to launch in 2021.
What I found here is water leaking out of some rocks on a hillside. This photo was taken back in Aug 2014 and I found it just a few months later. Yet NASA never declared finding this water at
this location.
“Our quest on Mars has been to ‘follow the water,’ in our search for life in the universe,” said John Grunsfeld, astronaut and associate administrator of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. And yet, they ignored this water flow and never told the news or the public about the rovers findings. They must have seen this, look how big and obvious the water flow is! Its impossible to miss it. So, the only other answer is that NASA decided to hide it from the public. The rover could have easily analyzed and tested this liquid to see if its water or some other liquid, but again, NASA has not said or posted any more about this photo. NASA is hiding its discoveries from the public. I wonder just how much they know and how much they found? I bet they have found a half dozen living species on Mars already. Remember how the first life in space was announced by Russian astronauts who found large plankton growing on the solar panels of the space station a few years ago? Yeah...NASA didnt do that...Russia did. Remember that gel found on the moon this week by the Chinese moon rover Jade Rabbit? Yeah...that wasn't NASA too. If we want discloser of the truth about alien species, we have to rely on other sources instead of NASA. Scott C. Waring
On Sept. 2, the Indian Space Research Organisation's Chandrayaan-2 moon orbiter successfully released its Vikram lander in lunar orbit as seen in this illustrated depiction.
India is one step closer to conquering the moon and becoming only the fourth nation to successfully put a working machine on our natural satellite.
Its mission, Chandrayan-2, has today successfully released its rover, Vikram, from the orbiter and sent it towards the moon's surface.
The crucial step took just 52 seconds and comes after Chandrayaan-2 entered lunar orbit two weeks ago and completed five trips around the moon.
Vikram is expected to touch down on September 7, according to The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

ISRO revealed the success of the manoeuvre on Twitter and published a statement on the agency's website.
It said: 'The Vikram Lander successfully separated from Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter at 1315 Hrs IST (08:45 BST) today (September 2, 2019).
'The Vikram Lander is currently located in an orbit of 119 km x 127 km (74 miles x 79miles).
'The Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter continues to orbit the Moon in its existing orbit.
'The health of the Orbiter and Lander is being monitored from the Mission Operations Complex (MOX) at ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) in Bengaluru with support from Indian Deep Space Network (IDSN) antennas at Bylalu, near Bengaluru.
'All the systems of Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter and Lander are healthy.'
It also issued a tentative timescale for the remainder of the mission's life, with landing pencilled in provisionally for Saturday 7.
Vikram, named after Dr Vikram A Sarabhai, the father of the Indian Space Programme, should land on a high plain between two craters, Manzinus C and Simpelius N, which are around 70° south.
From there, the six-wheeled robotic vehicle Pragyan will roll out and spend one lunar day, or a fortnight on Earth, carrying out scientific experiments on the surface.
Chandrayaan-2 snapped an image of the barren surface and its myriad craters caused by a barrage of wayward meteorites last week as it completed its orbits.
The photo was taken at a height of 1,646 miles (2,650 km) above the moon and includes a look at the Apollo crater and the Mare Orientalis.
The lander will use rocket fuel to brake as it attempts to land in the south polar region of the moon on September 7.
Vikram, the name given to the rover, will search for water deposits which were confirmed by a previous Indian moon mission.
Scientists have said the water deposits could make the moon a good refuelling station for further space travel.
Israel made attempt earlier this year but the mission ended in disaster when the Beresheet spacecraft lost control of its descent and fell into an uncontrolled descent

WHAT IS CHANDRAYAAN-2?
Chandrayaan-2 is the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) second lunar probe. It is comprised of three modules, an Orbiter, a Lander called Vikram, and a Rover called Pragyan.
The Orbiter will have a terrain mapping camera to help prepare 3D maps of the moon's surface, an X-ray spectrometer looking for major elements including titanium and sodium, and another high resolution camera to help the other modules land safely.
Vikram will have an instrument to detect seismic activity on the moon, and a thermal probe that will examine the thermal conductivity of the lunar surface.
Pragyan will have an alpha particle X-ray spectrometer that examines the elemental composition of the surface and a laser induced breakdown spectroscope which looks at the abundance of various elements nearby.
The entire mission has cost around 10 billion rupees (£120million).
The $145m (£116m) mission was launched on 22 July and Indian officials hope it will be the first to ever land on the Moon's south pole.
It is the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) second lunar probe, and the first one destined to land on the moon, and is scheduled to land on September 7.
India will become only the fourth country, after the US, Russia and China, to reach Earth's satellite if successful.
Israel made attempt earlier this year but the mission ended in disaster when the Beresheet spacecraft lost control of its descent and fell into an uncontrolled descent.
The end result was not a successful fairy-tale of a mission, but a fatal blow to the nation's space dreams as the craft was destroyed.
ISRO has said it chose to explore the south pole as it is possible there is water in the permanently shadowed areas, which could pave the way for future lunar habitation.
It also hopes to examine the inside of craters - which are cold traps - to get a greater understanding of the evolution of the moon.
The South Asian nation is bidding to become just the fourth nation to land a spacecraft on the Moon after the US, USSR and China

These areas have stayed extremely cold for huge amounts of time and scientists believe it is likely they contain a fossil record of the early solar system.
Chandrayaan-2 has three modules, an Orbiter, a Lander called Vikram, and a Rover called Pragyan, which means 'wisdom' in Sanskrit.
ISRO hope topographical studies, mineralogical analyses and other experiments will help the world gain a better understanding of the moon's origins.
Using solar energy to power itself, Pragyan will be able to communicate with the Lander, which in turn can send information to both the Indian Deep Space Network in Byalalu and the Orbiter.
Former NASA scientist Kumar Krishen said India's space agency should be praised for taking on ambitious projects like Chandrayaan-2.
'We should keep in mind that space exploration is risky as many systems have failed in the past and many lives lost,' he told AFP.
WHAT HAS INDIA'S SPACE AGENCY DONE TO REACH THE MOON?
Chandrayaan-1 was India's first lunar orbiter, launched in 2008.
The £49 million ($69 million) mission was launched amid national euphoria, putting India in the Asian space race alongside rival China and reinforcing its claim to be considered a global power.
A vehicle landed on the moon a month later and sent back images of the lunar surface.
In 2009 India terminated the mission a year earlier than planned, after scientists lost all contact with their unmanned orbiting spacecraft.

A crucial sensor in the main craft malfunctioned in July experts believe.
The satellite is believed to have crashed into the moon's surface.
'Our efforts to establish contact have failed. The mission has been terminated,' said S Satish, from the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) at the time.
'There was no point continuing with the mission.'
Named Chandrayaan-2, the vehicle will take between one and two months to reach orbit and once the rover reaches the surface it will explore the area around the south pole.
It is the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) second lunar probe.
Weighing nearly 3,300kg (7,300lbs), the spacecraft will take off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, off India's southwest coast.
It is now set for launch in January 2019.

Venus, long billed as Earth's much hotter twin, holds many mysteries within the thick envelope of clouds that surround it — which may also be responsible for the planet's dramatic climate changes.
A new study on a decade of ultraviolet observations of Venus from 2006 to 2017, showed that the planet's reflection of ultraviolet light decreased by half before shooting back up again, researchers said. This change resulted in large variations in the amount of solar energy absorbed by Venus' clouds and the circulation in its atmosphere, causing the changes in the planet's climate, they added.
"Current climate changes on Venus have not been considered before," Yeon Joo Lee, a researcher at the Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Technical University of Berlin, and lead author of the study, told Space.com. "Moreover, the level of UV-albedo [ reflectivity] variations is significantly large, so sufficient to affect atmospheric dynamics."
Researchers combined observations from Europe's Venus Express mission, Japan's Akatsuki Venus orbiter, NASA's Messenger spacecraft (which flew by Venus on the way to Mercury) and the Hubble Space Telescope for the study.
The weather on Venus, like that of the Earth, is affected by solar radiation and the changes in the reflection of its surrounding clouds. But unlike Earth, Venus' clouds are made up of sulfuric acid and contain dark patches that scientists have referred to as "unknown absorbers" as they absorb most of the heat and ultraviolet light emitted by the sun.
The new study suggests that these absorbers may be what is causing these changes in Venus' climate, although the team of scientists believe that the only way to know for sure is through further observations.
"At least one more decade [[of] observation. That will cover one more solar-activity cycle, and we will be able to find out whether or not this change is cyclic," Lee said.
The weather on the planet is already quite extreme, with temperatures reaching 880 degrees Fahrenheit (471 degrees Celsuis), and winds sweeping across Venus' surface at a speed of 450 m.p.h. (724 kilometers/h).
If further observations were to prove that solar activity is connected to this change in climate, then it could be applied to all other planets with aerosols, solid or liquid particles that reflect sunlight, such as Earth and Titan, according to Lee. However, the degree of change would be different in each one.
Lee said she is developing plans for more research on the unknown absorbers in Venus' clouds, adding that a future mission to Venus could help researchers gain a better understanding of the planet's changing climate.
China’s Lunar Rover Finds Strange “Gel-Like” Substance on the Far Side of the Moon
China's Yutu-2 rover exploring the far side of the moon has discovered a mysterious, never-before-seen gel-like substance.

China’s Chang’e 4 far-side lunar mission has revealed unprecedented details about the moon’s far side, beaming back to earth a plethora of images of the landscape of the far side along the way.
But the Chinese lander and rover were not sent to the far side of the moon just to take images of their surroundings, the robotic mission was sent to the moon to study, in a unique way, the details of the moon’s far side.
Chang’e 4 was launched on 7 December 2018 and entered lunar orbit on 12 December 2018, before landing on the Moon’s far side in a historic mission. Change’4 is the follow-up mission to Chang’e 3, the first Chinese successful moon landing.
The Chang’e 4 mission, like its predecessors, are named and the Chang’e, the Chinese goddess of the Moon.
China’s Yutu-2 rover stumbled on the mysterious substance during the eighth lunar days.
The unexpected discovery caused confusion in the scientific community promoting mission experts to postpone all other explorative driving schedules of the rover, to instead focus its scientific instruments in order to try and understand what the mysterious material really is.
After all, you don’t come across a weird, alien, gel-like material on the moon’s far side.
On July 25, the Chinese-built rover was carefully making its way across a landscape littered with smaller impact craters, guided by the planning of drivers on Earth, controlling the robotic explorer from the Beijing Aerospace Control Center.
An Image taken by the Chang’e 4 lander, showing the Yutu-2 rover exploring the far side of the moon. Image Credit: CNSA.
According to Yutu-2‘s “navigation diary,” on July 28, the researchers were preparing to put the rover into its usual midday sleep, to protect it from hazardous temperature and radiation from the sun.
The team of scientists was checking the images the rover had snapped using its main camera and noted a small crater that seemed to contain material with color and glow very different from that of the surrounding lunar surface.
It was an exciting find, so the researchers in charge of the rover called in lunar scientists. The team eventually decided to postpone Yutu-2’s plans to the west and decided to make the rover drive towards the crater in order to study the mysterious material.
Identifying the mysterious material
Using its state-of-the-art obstacle avoidance cameras, the miniature rover got to the crater and studied the mysteriously colored material and its surroundings with is Visible and Near-Infrared Spectrometers (VNIS instrument) which identifies the light reflected by the materials to expose its nature.
Although we still have no idea what exactly the material is the Chinese rover spotted, the scientists have revealed its a gel-like substance and it has a very unusual color.
Even though a scientific explanation has still not been presented, some researchers argue that the mysterious material may be a king of belt-glass generated by the numerous meteorites impacting the far side of the moon.
The discovery is certainly a surprising one since we know very little about the far side of the moon. however, it isn’t the first surprising discovery made on the lunar surface. During NASA’s Apollo missions, specifically, Apollo 17, Astronaut and geologist Garrison Schmitt encountered strange, orange-colored soil near the Taurus-Littrow landing site. It was later concluded by scientists that the moon’s orange soil was created after a massive volcanic eruption on the moon, around 3.64 billion years ago.
“Natal Kicks” sounds like a great name for a band or a bad thing to happen during childbirth, but it’s actually an astrophysics term for the velocity at birth of a black hole. If you’re looking for something else to keep you awake at night besides the latest political news, the latest astrophysics news tells us that there may be millions of black holes with a very high natal kick velocity speeding around our galaxy and looking for stars and planets to consume. Sweet dreams.
“This work basically talks about the first observational evidence that you can actually see black holes moving with high velocities in the galaxy and associate it to the kick the black hole system received at birth.”
ScienceAlert brings us the news of a new study about natal kicks and more accepted by the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. Co-author Pikky Atri (a top contender for Best Name for an Astronomer) explains the good news that she and her colleagues at Curtin University in Western Australia have found a way to track black holes feeding off of their partner in a binary system and follow their history back to their origin. Feeding black holes are the only ones astronomers can track because, although they can’t be seen, they belch X-rays and radio waves that can be picked up by telescopes.
“We tracked how these systems were moving in our galaxy – so, figured out their velocities today, moved back in time, and tried to understand what the velocity was of the system when it was born, individually for each of these 16 systems. Based on the velocities, you can actually find out if they were born with a supernova explosion, or if the stars just directly collapsed onto themselves without a supernova explosion.”
It’s been commonly accepted that black holes form when an elderly star implodes into itself. While it was known they could also form as the result of a sideways kick out of a particular type of supernova explosion that is lopsided, the number of these types of natal or Blaauw kicks births of black holes was a mystery. Atri found 16 binaries with feeding black holes and backtracked them to their births. She and her team then measured their velocities and trajectories and found that 12 of them showed the high speed and erratic movement which indicated that they were born by natal kick. Twelve. That’s not so bad, is it?
That’s 75 percent of the sample. If this scales up to the estimated 10 million black holes in the Milky Way, that might mean around 7.5 million high-speed black holes careening out there. And 10 million is a low estimate.
Thanks a lot, ScienceAlert. That’s a lot of hungry black holes in the Milky Way … and there’s probably more. Fortunately, Pikky Atri brings some astronomer logic to comfort us.
“The closest black hole, we think it’s two kiloparsecs away [6,523 light-years]. It’s very, very far away. So there’s no chance that we’re getting sucked up by any black hole any time soon.”
We would have felt better with “no chance” had she not added “we think” and “anytime soon.” Still, it’s big news that astronomers are getting better at tracking black holes as they travel around the universe. Perhaps by the time one gets close, we’ll have a better early warning system and deflection/destruction plan than our current asteroid watchers do.
For the first time in centuries, compasses in Greenwich are about to point directly at true north: an epic coincidence of time and magnetism that hasn’t taken place for some 360 years.
This serendipitous occurrence – which is set to occur within the next fortnight – serves as a startling reminder of how Earth’s magnetic north pole is constantly wandering, unlike the fixed ‘true north’ of Earth’s geographic north pole.
The angular difference between those two different points is called magnetic declination, and while the gap might not be something ordinary people spend a great deal of time thinking about, it’s a disparity that can last for centuries at a time.
For hundreds of years now in the UK, due to Earth’s shifting magnetic north pole, declination has been negative, meaning compass needles have been pointing west of true north.
But nothing lasts forever.
The agonic – an invisible line that connects Earth’s north and south magnetic poles (and which represents zero declination wherever it passes through) – has been moving westward at approximately 20 kilometres (about 12 miles) per year.
At that rate, it’s set to pass through Greenwich this month – the historic site of the Greenwich Royal Observatory – making history in the process.
“At some point in September, the agonic will meet zero longitude at Greenwich,” says geomagnetism researcher Ciaran Beggan from the British Geological Survey (BGS).
“This marks the first time since the Observatory’s creation that the geographic and geomagnetic coordinate systems have coincided at this location.”
As fate would have it, it was a coincidence that when the Royal Observatory was founded in the late 17th century – at the decree of King Charles II – compasses in Greenwich also pointed directly at true north, due to zero declination.
Ever since then, constant variations in the position of Earth’s magnetic north pole due to changes in the composition of Earth’s molten outer core have seen the agonic keep shifting.
It’s a phenomenon that’s expected to endure well past this September’s circumstantial synchronicity (from the perspective of compass users in Greenwich, at least).
“The agonic will continue to pass across the UK over the next 15 to 20 years,” Beggan says.
“By 2040, all compasses will probably point eastwards of true north.”
Siberian Puppy Frozen for 14,300 Years Is a Major RNA Breakthrough
Siberian puppy frozen in permafrost for 14,300 years gives scientists major RNA breakthrough.
Source: Siberian Times
Never before has RNA – Ribonucleic acid – sequencing been carried out from so far back in time. Finding RNA on the puppy found preserved in permafrost in Tumat in 2015 is a major scientific discovery. It was either a wolf or a domesticated wolf-dog hybrid, scientists cannot be certain. In other words, this Pleistocene canid may have been an ancient pet.
Finding the Frozen Puppy RNA
Experts can be more definite about one thing: it has given up a secret amounting to a significant scientific advance. Unlike DNA, RNA has a relatively short lifespan. Yet it has been unlocked in this ancient creature from Tumat, in the Sakha Republic also known as Yakutia.
It has given up a secret amounting to a significant scientific advance.
(Siberian Times)
DNA encodes the hard copy of genes, and can survive thousands of years if conditions are right. But RNA is seen as short-lived: it is the working copy of a gene. DNA analysis shows what kind of genes a species had, while RNA explains which genes were working and which were silent.
Now Dr. Oliver Smith, of Copenhagen University, and his colleagues analyzed the RNA from the liver, cartilage, and muscle tissue of the ancient animal.
“The scientists showed that the RNA sequenced from liver tissue of the Tumat puppy was truly representative of the animal’s RNA, with many liver-specific transcripts that matched more modern samples from both wolves and dogs ,” reported sci-news.com
“The canid’s transcriptome is the oldest RNA sequenced by far, surpassing the next oldest transcriptome by at least 13,000 years.”
Joint team of Russian and Korean researchers makes an autopsy of the puppy in March 2016.
(Siberian Times)
Significance of the Discovery
Dr. Smith said:
“Ancient DNA researchers have previously been reluctant to attempt to sequence ancient RNA because it is generally more unstable than DNA, and more prone to enzymatic degradation. However, following our recent successes in sequencing ancient RNA from plant material, we speculated that a well-preserved animal specimen, frozen in the permafrost, just might retain enough material to sequence. To our delight, we found that not only did we find RNA from various tissues, but in some case the signal was so strong that we could distinguish between tissues in a way that makes biological sense.”
The devolution of UFO observations (or reports, to give Zoam Chomsky his due)
Copyright 2019, InterAmerica, Inc.
While giving cursory attention to the two MUFON books noted heavily here recently and perusing Albert Rosales’ Humanoid series often, and paying attention to my UFO feeds from various outlets, I notice that UFOs (or reports of them) have dwindled in bizarreness or vividity.
When entity sightings were rife in flying saucer reports – those 1950s accounts in France, Italy, and South America mostly – today’s reported sightings are of lights or geometrically configured “things” devoid of beings, inside or out.
Entities accompanying flying saucers bespoke the possibility of alien pilots. Lights and rectangles or triangles don’t rile the imagination.
When persons talked about being abducted – post Barney/Betty Hill, Travis Walton — or being assaulted by odd entities – Higdon and Calvin Parker – there was an idea that we were under attack by visitors from outer space or elsewhere.
Nowadays, lights and triangles only suggest an amorphous phenomenon.
And the rather new Navy pilot encounters don’t help much. They insert geometrics – spheres and cubes, a tic-tac shaped something-or-another, and a fast traveling oddity.
No indication(s) of aliens [ETs] or metal spacecraft, like the cigar-shaped thing spotted by Chiles-Whitted in 1948:
From Project 1947
Yes, some cigar-shaped UFOs show up in the MUFON books, but no alien sightings or Forbidden Planet-like saucers.
UFOs, as exciting “objects,” are winding down among observers.

How Putting Googly Eyes on Robots Makes Them Fundamentally Less Threatening (Video)
At the beginning of 2019, the supermarket chain Giant Food Stores announced it would begin operating customer-assisting robots — collectively dubbed Marty — in 172 East Coast locations. These autonomous machines may navigate their respective store using a laser-based detection system, but they’re also outfitted with a pair of oversized googly eyes. This is to, “[make] it a bit more fun,” Giant President Nick Bertram told Adweek in January, and “celebrate the fact that there’s a robot.”
“As we approach the completion of the rollout, we continue to be pleased by the addition of Marty in our stores,” a Giant Food rep told Engadget via email. “Our associates are appreciative of the assistance Marty provides them, freeing them up to do other tasks and interact more with customers. Speaking of our customers, they, too, are big fans of Marty, with kids and adults alike looking for Marty in-store and taking selfies.”
But Marty’s googly eyes don’t just give customers something to chuckle at as they pass one another in the cereal aisle. Research shows that slapping peepers on inanimate objects puts the humans around them at ease and encourages them to be more generous and pro-social (as opposed to anti-social) than they normally would.
“People pay attention to the presence of eyes,” Dr. Amrisha Vaish, assistant professor at the University of Virginia’s department of psychology, told Engadget. “Humans are very sensitive to the presence of other people, and we behave more socially in the presence of other people.” It’s called the “watching-eye paradigm” and exploits the deep-seated human trait of needing to be valued within society: managing our reputations and being seen by those around us as team players.
“In the course of our evolution, it’s been really important for us to be to cooperate with others,” Vaish points out. Interpersonal cooperation has proved “so important to the evolution of the human species that we’ve become really sensitive to even sort of minimal cues of eyes,” she continued.
Dr. Pawan Sinha, professor of vision and computational neuroscience at MIT, concurs. “If one were to find an ecological reason why we are so attuned to see faces it’s because the ability to detect faces is crucial for our social well being and, when we are young, it’s crucial to our survival to be able to detect a specific human and be able to orient towards them,” he told Engadget. “It’s very important for us to be able to live our lives as social beings.”
Vaish’s own research in this field, specifically the 2018 study Eyes, More Than Other Facial Features, Enhance Real-World Donation Behavior, bears out this effect. Vaish and her team alternated photographs of a chair, a nose, a mouth and a pair of human eyes above the donation jar at a local children’s museum over 28 weeks.
The weeks during which the eyes were displayed saw an average total donation of $27 — around $12 more than when the other images were shown.
“What we found is that the eyes — compared to the chairs — did, in fact, increase people’s donations,” Vaish said.
“The numbers weren’t huge but there was a statistically significant increase.”
This effect extends beyond actions like donations, the watching-eye paradigm can also reduce antisocial behavior like littering and bike theft. It also affects people of all ages. “As young as 5 years of age, children become sensitive to being watched.” Vaish said. “When a peer is watching them, they show more prosocial behavior and less antisocial, less stealing behavior.”
The effect does not last forever, however. Vaish notes that in her previous research position, she found that putting a picture of eyes near the communal supply of milk drastically reduced the rate at which people would help themselves to it. At least to start.
“Initially, they’re very striking when you put them up, and then you sort of start to monitor your behavior more,” she said. However, over time, people became accustomed to the presence of these watching eyes before eventually sliding back into complacency with regard to their milk intake.
This intra-office phenomenon illustrates an unusual aspect of humanity’s evolution: We can see faces (and assign agency) to almost anything. “People look for certain specific cues, physical features or behaviors, to determine whether something is alive,” Dr. Erin Horowitz, a lecturer at the University of California at Santa Barbara’s department of psychological and brain science, told Engadget. “So something that appears to move on its own, people tend to process it as alive.”
This is an ancient prey response in humans, instilled over countless generations before we arrived at the top of the food chain. It’s better to see the leopard that isn’t there, Horowitz said, than to not see the leopard that is. As such, even highly abstracted and stylized depictions of eyes can trigger this response. “You could have two dots next to each other, and those would be considered eyes,” Horowitz said, “if there’s, say, a line underneath that looks like a mouth.”
And it’s “not just identifying predators,” she said, “but also identifying potential people that we can cooperate and interact with.” These hardwired evolutionary responses and visceral need for social bonds have led to the development of the “theory of mind.”
“You can think of it as a broad term for research on the human capacity for social engagement,” Dr. Tamsin German, a professor at the University of California at Santa Barbara’s department of psychological and brain science, told Engadget. “Specifically, those ones that talk about the concepts we have of people’s internal, hidden mental states.
“People believe things, people want things, people hope things. And those internal states predict the behaviors that they will engage in,” said. By piecing together a person’s behavior and explaining it in terms of those hidden states, one can glimpse at the motivations and underlying beliefs of that person. “it’s a critically important skill for humans being such a social species,” German said.
As it turns out, slapping googly eyes on a roving robotic monolith like Marty can elicit the same response from humans even when we know the object is not actually alive. But there are limits to this effect, and surprisingly, the Uncanny Valley exists for robot eyes as well.
German notes that a wide variety of prey species have evolved agency-granting responses similar to humans’, “there is lots of work suggesting that they have a sensitivity to two eyes looking directly at them.”But in rhesus macaques, how those eyes are presented makes all the difference.
She points to a recent study from Princeton University, which placed various photographs and stylized, abstracted depictions of macaque faces in front of real macaques. “The rhesus macaque will look a lot at highly stylized, cartoony pictures of other faces of rhesus monkeys. And they look a lot at actual photographs of rhesus monkeys, But if you have very, very close, but not quite, images, they don’t like them at all.”As with humans, being almost there — but not quite — is interpreted as a negative signal.
A similar effect can be seen when humans observe the movements of robots, androids, and other people. German references a recent multinational study in which subjects were shown static images of clearly mechanical robots, natural humans and androids like you’d see at the Disney World Hall of Presidents.
“You put them in an fMRI scanner and just essentially allow the brain to acclimate to what it’s seeing,” she said. Then, “using a technique called predictive coding, you look at which parts of the brain are excited when [the object in the image] starts moving. Essentially, asking the brain to tell you what it didn’t expect.”
When the robot starts clunking around in a very mechanical fashion and the human moves smoothly, researchers noted only slight electrical responses from the brain.“But the Android looks like a human and moves like a robot in various areas of the brain kind of a more active compared to a baseline, suggesting that the brain didn’t see what it predicts,” German explained.
This is what elicits the uneasiness and trepidation in people when they interact with a machine in the Uncanny Valley. It’s 200,000 years of evolution going, “Hey, stupid, this thing is moving when it shouldn’t be (at least not moving or looking like it should be). You need to scram before you get eaten.”
But adding eyes, even the googly variety, appears to help mitigate this effect by exploiting our social nature to artificially instill a sense of agency toward these inanimate objects.
“It’s just a signal that this is an animate thing, it’s going to have mental states and — provided you’re not trying to you make it look so realistic, where the movement that it engages in looks wrong — you’re not going to get an Uncanny valley effect,” German concluded.
What I found here is water leaking out of some rocks on a hillside. This photo was taken back in Aug 2014 and I found it just a few months later. Yet NASA never declared finding this water at this location.
Scott C. Waring
