Quasars are Standardizable Cosmic Candles, Astronomers Say

Using spectral data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the Chandra Source Catalog 2.0, and the Chandra COSMOS Legacy survey, astronomers have found that X-ray and ultraviolet luminosities of quasars are so tightly correlated that these objects can be used as new ‘standard candles’ to help determine cosmic distances and probe other fundamental cosmological parameters.

“In 1929, Edwin Hubble published observations that galaxies’ distances and velocities are correlated, with the distances determined using their Cepheid stars,” said Dr. Susanna Bisogni from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and the INAF – Istituto di Astrofisica Spaziale e Fisica Cosmica Milano and her colleagues.

“Harvard astronomer Henrietta Swan Leavitt had discovered that a Cepheid star varies periodically with a period that is related to its intrinsic luminosity.”

“She calibrated the effect, and when Hubble compared those calculated values with his observed luminosities he was able to determine their distances.”

“But even today only Cepheid stars in relatively nearby galaxies can be studied in this way,” they said.

“In order to extend the distance scale back to earlier times in cosmic history, astronomers have used supernovae, which can be seen to much greater distances.”

“By comparing the observed brightness of a supernova with its intrinsic brightness, based on its classification, astronomers are able to determine its distance; comparing that with the host galaxy’s velocity yields the ‘Hubble relation’ relating the galaxy’s velocity to its distance.”

“The most reliable supernovae for this purpose, because of their cosmic uniformity, are so-called Type Ia supernovae, which are thought to be ‘standard candles,’ all having the same intrinsic brightness.”

“However, even supernovae become harder to study in this way as they lie farther away; to date the most distant Type Ia supernova with a reliable velocity determination dates from an epoch about 3 billion years after the Big Bang.”

In their new work. Dr. Bisogni and co-authors propose using quasars as a new standard candle.

“At the heart of a quasar is a supermassive black hole surrounded by a very hot disk of accreting material that emits in the ultraviolet,” they explained.

“The disk in turn is surrounded by hot gas with electrons moving at speeds close to that of light, and when ultraviolet photons encounter these electrons their energy is boosted into the X-rays.”

They analyzed X-ray measurements of 2,332 distant quasars in the new Chandra Source Catalog and compared them to ultraviolet results from the SDSS DR 14 catalog.

They found that the tight correlation already known to exist between the ultraviolet and X-ray luminosity of local quasars continues in distant quasars, back over 85% of the age of the Universe, becoming even tighter at earlier times.

The implication is that these two quantities can determine the distance of each quasar, and those distances can then be used to test cosmological models.

If the results are confirmed, they will provide astronomers with a dramatic new tool with which to measure the properties of the evolving Universe.

“The most distant known quasars have been spotted from an era only about 700 million years after the Big Bang, dramatically extending the range of standard candle redshifts,” the astronomers said.

“Another advantage of quasars is that hundreds of thousands of them have been discovered in the past few years.”

“Not least, the physical processes in quasars are different from those in supernovae, providing completely independent measures of cosmological parameters.”

The team’s work will be published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

A brief but extremely powerful cosmic blast from a distance galaxy has taken the record for the brightest light ever seen from Earth.

It was emitted by a gamma ray burst seven billion light-years away and created more energy in a few seconds than the sun will burn in its 10 billion year lifetime.

The discovery, led by researchers from Curtin University in Western Australia involved more than 300 scientists from around the world.

They happen so far away they can only be detected when the beams are pointed directly at Earth and can last from a few milliseconds to a few hours.

'They are likely produced by a massive star being blown apart in a supernova, with the resulting explosion leaving behind a black hole', said Dr Anderson. 

Gamma ray bursts appear in the sky without warning, about once per day.

This 'massive burst' reached the Earth on the 14th of January 2019 and was detected by two space satellites - the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory built by University College London and the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope.

The burst was named GRB 190114C and, within 22 seconds, its coordinates were sent to astronomers across the globe.

Astronomers at the Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescopes in the Canary Islands were the first to survey the bursts.

In the first seconds after they started observing, the two MAGIC telescopes detected particles of light from the afterglow of the burst that clocked in at between 0.2 and 1 tera electron volts (TeV).

Researchers say the gamma ray bursts likely came from the aftermath of a massive supernova explosion billions of light years away, as seen in this artist impression 

An electron volt is the amount of kinetic energy gained or lost by a single electron as it accelerates from rest through a potential difference of one volt in a vacuum. 

A tera electron volt is 1,000,000,000,000 electron volts.

The 0.2 to 1 TeV measured in the afterglow of this blast is equivalent to the amount of energy released by proton collisions in the Large Hadron Collider, the most powerful particle accelerator on Earth.

It is the first time such high-energy radiation has been detected from a gamma ray burst in the 46 years since the phenomenon was first identified.

Dr Anderson said: 'It's a trillion times more energetic than visible light. It makes this the brightest known source of TeV photons in the universe.'

The gamma ray burst was followed up by telescopes around the world, to pinpoint where the burst had originated from and its physical attributes.

Researchers hope it will shed light on the physical processes that lead to such bright explosions and the creation of black holes. 

'We've now seen extremely high-energy light is released in the afterglow period - something that was only predicted before in models.

'Comparative studies suggest this is not an unusual feature', said Dr Paul Kuin, of University College London

The new results provide the first unequivocal evidence for a distinct emission process in the afterglow of a gamma ray burst.

It is hoped many more bursts will be detected at very high energies in the future to reveal more information about these powerful cosmic explosions.

BLACK HOLES HAVE A GRAVITATIONAL PULL SO STRONG NOT EVEN LIGHT CAN ESCAPE

Black holes are so dense and their gravitational pull is so strong that no form of radiation can escape them - not even light.

They act as intense sources of gravity which hoover up dust and gas around them. Their intense gravitational pull is thought to be what stars in galaxies orbit around.

How they are formed is still poorly understood. Astronomers believe they may form when a large cloud of gas up to 100,000 times bigger than the sun, collapses into a black hole.

Many of these black hole seeds then merge to form much larger supermassive black holes, which are found at the centre of every known massive galaxy.

Alternatively, a supermassive black hole seed could come from a giant star, about 100 times the sun's mass, that ultimately forms into a black hole after it runs out of fuel and collapses.

When these giant stars die, they also go 'supernova', a huge explosion that expels the matter from the outer layers of the star into deep space.

Gamma ray bursts are celebrities in the astronomy world for a number of reasons – they’re the brightest electromagnetic events known in the universe; many are so far away that they’re thought to be the afterglow of massive supernova blasts from just after the Big Bang. It’s the second reason that gets the most attention, which is why a recent burst from the galaxy farthest away from us gets a lot of attention – a flash from galaxy GN-z11 looks like it occurred 13.2 billion years ago, just 400 million years after the Big Bang. It’s also why it gets a lot of scrutiny, and two new studies suggest it’s not 13.2 billion light years from Earth … it may actually be so close we can almost touch it. Don’t astronomers know it’s Halloween season, not April Fools Day?

Can we really believe our eyes?

“This is a typical problem in astronomy – it’s difficult to measure distances.”

OK, that’s true for DIY carpenters … but we expect better from astronomers. Astronomer Michał Michałowski of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poland led one study of the GN-z11-flash, published in Nature Astronomy. He commented in Science Alert on the assessment made in 2020 by Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics and Peking University researcher Linhua Jiang and his team that the gamma-ray burst picked up by the MOSFIRE instrument on the Keck I telescope in Hawaii in 2017 appeared to have occurred 13.2 billion years ago. Another study, also published in Nature Astronomy and led by astrophysicist Charles Steinhardt of the University of Copenhagen’s Niels Bohr Institute in Denmark, agreed with Michalowski – those measurements looked astronomically fishy – and not in a Pisces constellation way. They both agreed the Hubble picked up something with the brightness of a gamma ray burst but not from GN-z11.

“An object with a given recorded brightness may be a faint nearby object or a luminous distant object. In both cases they would appear equally bright for us. The object in question turned out to be a very nearby piece of space junk, but its brightness was equally compatible with a huge stellar explosion at the edge of the observable Universe.”

Space junk! Specifically, a discarded Breeze-M upper stage of a Russian Proton rocket launched in 2015 that records confirmed was at a distance of 13,758 kilometers from Earth, and would have appeared in the MOSFIRE field of view during the time the flash was taking place. The ‘flash’ was actually a refection of the Sun off of the rocket. At the time of its discovery in 2017, Jiang and his team considered the space junk possibility but ruled it out. With the new information, did Jiang and his team admit they were wrong?

“We cannot completely rule out the possibility of unknown satellites (or debris). Despite this fact, our new calculations have suggested that our original conclusion remains valid.”

Of course not! In their response in Nature Astronomy (the go-to place for astronomy spats), they defended their original assessment that the GN-z11-flash was a gamma ray burst from 13.2 billion years ago, but the seed of doubt has been planted in the astronomy community and they will need to build a stronger case.

To paraphrase the rule of thumb for carpenters into the astronomy world: “Measure twice, publish once.”

I moved to the United States to live in 2001, and, in the summer, I traveled around much of the west coast – chiefly to do a series of lectures for various UFO groups situated in California. An old lady put out a thread and asking if we could talk. Well, that would be just fine. On July 28, 2001 I hung out with the then-seventy-nine-year-old woman: we had lunch in a Los Angeles restaurant and chatted extensively. She was driven to the restaurant by a family member, a much younger man who seemed to be equally as worried as she was. Nevertheless, she agreed to share what she knew, providing her name was never published (although, she was required to provide Simon & Schuster’s legal people with a release form, as were each and all of the other whistleblowers, too). So, I sat back and listened. I referred to her in the book as the Black Widow. When we met, and knowing that she had read my 1998 book, The FBI Files, my natural assumption was that she wanted to tell me something about UFO encounters at the Oak Ridge atomic facility, where she worked. Makes sense, right? No. I was dead wrong: what she actually wanted to share with me was certain information that, if provable, would radically alter the face of Ufology and blow the Roswell case right out of the water. As we ate, I wondered, with a fair degree of excitement: what the hell have I got myself into? It wasn’t long before I had the answer to that loaded question.

The Black Widow, born in 1922, had been in the employ of Oak Ridge from the mid-1940s to the early 1950s. While there, and on three occasions between May and July 1947, she saw a number of unusual-looking bodies brought to the facility – and under stringent security. They looked like regular Japanese people, she said. Others, however, displayed the signs of certain medical conditions: dwarfism, oversized heads, and bulging eyes. A few of the bodies were extensively damaged – as if they had been in violent accidents, which proved to be the case. In all, fifteen such bodies were brought to Oak Ridge under great secrecy; all of them reportedly used in certain high-altitude, balloon-based experiments in New Mexico, one of which led to the Roswell legend. Or, became a part of the legend is probably more correct. The Black Widow said: “Those bodies – the Roswell bodies – they weren’t aliens. The government could care less about those stories about alien bodies found at Roswell – except to hide the truth.” She added she didn’t know anything at all about how these people were brought to the United States, but she heard at Oak Ridge that some of them were in the States in late 1945 and brought over with Japanese doctors and Nazi doctors who had been doing similar experiments. “That’s when some of this began,” she told me. The story continued that at least some of the people used in the tests were American prisoners given the opportunity to cut the lengths of their sentences – if, that is, they were willing to take a chance and take part in the dicey experiments. Reportedly, a number did take the bait, but failed to survive the flights. Not all of the handicapped people came from Japan, but from “hospitals and “asylums” in the United States. The grim plot was that they wouldn’t be missed. Ever.

All of the material evidence was said to have been eventually destroyed – chiefly because the operations didn’t provide much in the way of results, and because of the outright illegality of the experiments. Everything, the Black Widow said, was hidden beneath a mass of fabricated tales of flying saucers and little men from the stars. She doubted that anything of any significance still existed – certainly not the bodies or the balloons, and probably not even the old records, which she believed were burned to oblivion. Unless, however, some of them were preserved for secret, historical purposes, which is not impossible. I hope they were. If not, it may be nigh on impossible to conclusively prove anything about Roswell – ever. There was one other aspect of the Black Widow’s story that needs to be addressed: her overwhelming fear. It was ever-present throughout our 2001 meeting. She tried to disguise that fear with smiles and laughter, but she was certainly no Oscar-winning Hollywood actor. That’s for sure. Seeing through her facade was like seeing through freshly polished glass. In my Body Snatchers in the Desert book I said that she “possessed the sad and somewhat sunken eyes of a person with the weight of the world on her shoulders. She was clearly looking for someone to speak with; but, equally, she was very concerned about the ramifications of doing so, ‘if the government finds out.'”

In my original manuscript, I detailed why she was so scared, but that section didn’t make the cut. The reason? The publisher was highly concerned about the Black Widow’s extremely controversial claims to me that certain people who had got too close to the truth of Roswell, and who couldn’t keep their mouths shut, had been “removed.” So the story went, certain hired assets, who regularly worked with the intelligence community on troublesome situations, were secretly contracted to terminate those who threatened the status quo and its dangerous secret. Yep: very controversial. Interestingly, the Black Widow made a mention to me of a long-retired nurse from Roswell who had died under extremely questionable circumstances “a few years ago.”  I didn’t know it at the time, but it’s highly possible that she was referring to a woman named Miriam Bush. Miriam was not actually a nurse, at all: in 1947 she was an executive secretary at Roswell’s RAAF hospital. She worked for a medical officer named Lieutenant Colonel Harold Warne, and saw the bodies found on the Foster Ranch – specifically when they were brought into the confines of the hospital. They were, as nearly everyone claimed, small, damaged, decaying and unusual-looking. This trauma-filled experience clearly affected Miriam to a huge degree. The whole thing was like an albatross around her neck. That huge, ominous bird never left her.

Miriam’s private life was a mess and she became an alcoholic – as did, by the way, two other players in the Roswell story. They were Major Jesse Marcel and Dee Proctor; a sign, perhaps of the tremendous burden of hiding what they knew. And, in the late 1980s, Miriam became fearful that she was being watched and followed. She was. Miriam  was found dead in a motel-room just outside of San Jose, California, in December 1989. A plastic bag was around her head and her arms were bruised and scratched. The verdict? Suicide. Yeah, really. When the story of Miriam Bush surfaced – years after I spoke with the Black Widow, and also a couple of years after Body Snatchers in the Desert was published – my mind instantly swung back to the Black Widow’s comments relative to the highly suspicious death of a certain “nurse” from Roswell. Was it Miriam Bush? I don’t know. But, logically, it would make sense, even if the ranks and positions were wrong. If so, though, how did the Black Widow know this? After all, Miriam was based at Roswell, New Mexico and the Black Widow worked in Tennessee. I have no answer to that question; I wish I did. But, I do know that the Black Widow’s major concern about speaking on the record was the fear that she would finish up like the woman from Roswell; a woman who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and who paid for it with her life, years later.

Now, it’s twenty years since I began to seriously pursue the theory that the Roswell affair was a top secret experiment – rather than a UFO crash – that revolved around high-altitude flights and the secret use of handicapped people in that same experiment. A dark and disturbing story, for sure. It still is a dark story, And, I still continue to get new information that makes me believe Roswell had zero to do with aliens. Not even a single one. It’s too bad that the UFO research community is scared (rather, absolutely pissing themselves) to look at what I call the alternative side of Roswell. Should they delve into it all of this, they may not like what they find. But, they will know the real story – even though it’s a terrible one.

Scientists have found an extremely rare fossil in Canada that is of an entirely new invertebrate species. This fossil is so significant that it has provided experts with very important information regarding the origins of multicellular animals. This newly identified fossil dates back to 375 million years ago during the Late Devonian Period. And it is very small, measuring just six centimeters.

Discovered in Gaspésie’s Miguasha Provincial Park, the new species is a ctenophore (comb jelly) which is a fish with a soft body and that looks similar to a jellyfish. Richard Cloutier, who is a paleontologist from the Université du Québec à Rimouski and one of the lead researchers, described the significance of the discovery, “It’s a very interesting fossil, and it’s revealing a lot of insights about the evolution of life,” adding, “It’s very, very rare that we have that kind of fossil.”

It’s hard to believe that the fossil was even found as it had no bones, cartilage, or teeth. “Normally what we find in the fossil, it’s all the hard parts,” Cloutier stated, adding, “Usually when it’s a soft-bodied animal, there’s nothing that could be preserved.” Hans Larsson, who is a paleontology professor at McGill University’s Redpath Museum, but wasn’t involved in the research, described the discovery as being exceptional and saying, “Imagine preserving a jellyfish for hundreds of millions of years in a rock. It’s almost impossible to even imagine the odds of finding this.”

Cloutier went on to say that finding such a unique fossil is confirmation that comb jellies were one of the earliest multicellular animals on the planet and has revealed important information about the origins of complex life. In fact, it is another important step regarding the theory that all animals evolved from either comb jellies or sponges.

Johanne Kerr, who is the Miguasha Park’s collection manager, stated that the site is “really exceptional” and it certainly is as it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. While numerous vertebrates have been found there, soft-bodied fish are an entirely new discovery and hopefully more will be found as Kerr noted, “Now that we know we can find this type of fossils here in Miguasha, we’ll keep an eye out for more of them.”

As for what will happen next, the fossil will be analyzed by additional scientists and will eventually be put on display next year for the public to view. In the meantime, a picture of the fossil can be seen here.

Quebec’s Miguasha National Park is famous for its fossils dating back to the Devonian Period (also known as the “Age of Fishes”). Five of the six prehistoric fish groups associated with that time period have been found at the Upper Devonian Escuminac Formation. The largest amount and best preserved fossils belonging to the lobe-finned fish have been discovered there. These brought about the first terrestrial vertebrates with four legs and that breathed air – they were tetrapods.

NASA To Launch Double Asteroid Redirection Test Mission – Preventing a Hazardous Asteroid From Striking Earth

">NASA is ready for the upcoming launch of NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission, an evaluation of technologies for preventing a hazardous asteroid from striking Earth.

DART is targeted to launch at 10:20 p.m. PST, November 23, 2021, (1:20 a.m. EST, November 24), aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. Live coverage of the launch will air on NASA TV, the NASA app, and the agency’s website.

DART will be the first demonstration of the kinetic impactor technique, which involves sending one or more large, high-speed spacecraft into the path of an asteroid in space to change its motion. Its target is the binary near-Earth asteroid Didymos and its moonlet.

NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirect Test, DART, mission is intended to collide with the smaller of two bodies of the Didymos binary asteroid system in autumn 2022.

DART is a planetary defense-driven test of technologies for preventing an impact of Earth by a hazardous asteroid. DART will be the first demonstration of the kinetic impactor technique to change the motion of an asteroid in space.

The binary near-Earth asteroid (65803) Didymos is the target for the DART demonstration. While the Didymos primary body is approximately 780 meters across, its secondary body (or “moonlet”) is about 160-meters in size, which is more typical of the size of asteroids that could pose the most likely significant threat to Earth. The Didymos binary is being intensely observed using telescopes on Earth to precisely measure its properties before DART arrives.

The DART spacecraft will achieve the kinetic impact deflection by deliberately crashing itself into the moonlet at a speed of approximately 6.6 km/s, with the aid of an onboard camera (named DRACO) and sophisticated autonomous navigation software. The collision will change the speed of the moonlet in its orbit around the main body by a fraction of one percent, but this will change the orbital period of the moonlet by several minutes – enough to be observed and measured using telescopes on Earth.

Once launched, DART will deploy Roll Out Solar Arrays (ROSA) to provide the solar power needed for DART’s electric propulsion system. The DART spacecraft will demonstrate the NASA Evolutionary Xenon Thruster – Commercial (NEXT-C) solar electric propulsion system as part of its in-space propulsion. NEXT-C is a next-generation system based on the Dawn spacecraft propulsion system, and was developed at NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. By utilizing electric propulsion, DART could benefit from significant flexibility to the mission timeline while demonstrating the next generation of ion engine technology, with applications to potential future NASA missions.

DART will launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. After separation from the launch vehicle and over a year of cruise it will intercept Didymos’ moonlet in late September 2022, when the Didymos system is within 11 million kilometers of Earth, enabling observations by ground-based telescopes and planetary radar to measure the change in momentum imparted to the moonlet.

How UFO believers are being vindicated in 2021

It’s difficult to pinpoint the precise moment the mainstream decided that it might be time to take UFOs seriously. As unlikely as it might sound, it may well be the evening that President Barack Obama appeared on CBS’ The Late Late Show with James Corden in May of this year.

“Do you have a question for our guest this evening?” asked the presenter, in the direction of bandleader Reggie Watts.

“You betcha…” replies Watts, before proceeding to ask POTUS 44 if he believes in UFOs. No judgement. We’d do the same.

Obama, so often so composed and stately, looks uncomfortable. ​“Well,” he says gingerly, ​“when it comes to aliens, there are some things I just can’t tell you on air…”

The audience giggles. Corden asks if Obama will tell them off air. Obama purses his lips.

“Look,” he says, ​“the truth is that when I came to office, I asked. I was like, ​‘is there a lab somewhere where we’re keeping the alien specimens and spaceships?’”

Corden cackles like a drunk monkey.

“And you know, they did a little bit of research, and the answer was no.”

“But what is true,” continues Obama, ​“and I’m actually being serious here, is that there are footage and records of objects in the skies that we don’t know exactly what they are. We can’t explain how they move. Their trajectory. They did not have an easily explainable pattern…”

The live studio audience is silent. The look of vacancy on Corden’s face suggests that he doesn’t know what to do with the seismic news that he’s been audience to. Obama chucks him a bone.

“Of course, Reggie might be an alien…”

Cue uproarious laughter.

“That stereotypical UFO nut isn’t the sort of person coming forward anymore. It’s credible people who want to have a serious discussion.”

Obama isn’t the only person of profile to tease us with insider knowledge of UFOs in recent times. Four years ago, The New York Times broke a story revealing that a secret Pentagon programme entitled the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, helmed by a decorated military intelligence officer named Luis Elizondo, had been investigating reports of UFOs for years, at great fiscal expense. Elizondo, a hero to a new breed of ufologists, broke rank. ​“My personal belief is that there is very compelling evidence that we may not be alone,” he says. His followers, like Elizondo, don’t just want to believe. They already do.

“It all started with Luis,” explains Andy McGrillen, creator and co-host of one of Britain’s most popular UFO podcasts, That UFO Podcast. ​“Since The New York Times article, there’s been a slow and steady release of footage and testimony from more and more pilots and the like coming forward. It meant that the U.S. government had to acknowledge it. No disrespect to any hicks coming from the local trailer park in Texas, but that stereotypical UFO nut isn’t the sort of person coming forward anymore. It’s not just people saying, ​‘Oh, they’re here from the Zeta Reticuli’, things they would just never know. It’s credible people who want to have a serious discussion.”

Interest in UFOs has been building ever since. Last year, in July, the former acting chairman of the Select Committee on Intelligence, Senator Marco Rubio, told CBS news, ​“We don’t know [what they are],” he said, ​“and [they aren’t] ours.”

Later, in December, former C.I.A. director John Brennan told the economist Tyler Cowen in an interview that ​“some of the phenomena we’re going to be seeing continues to be unexplained and might, in fact, be some type of phenomenon that is the result of something that we don’t yet understand and that could involve some type of activity that some might say constitutes a different form of life.” That same month, located within a $2.3 trillion spending and coronavirus-relief package, was a directive requiring the Department of Defence and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence to deliver an unclassified report on UFOs to Congress within six months of that date.

Boyed by the revelations potentially coming their way, with increasingly credible looking captured footage (two of the best being that of the ​“Tic Tac”, shot in 2004 onboard the USS Nimitz, and from 2015, on the USS Theodore Roosevelt, the ​“Gimbal”) to satiate their thirst in the meantime, many of the planet’s most popular cultural commentators have become more and more vocal in their interest of UFOs. It’s in keeping with the public’s mood. A poll conducted by Pew Research in July claims that 65 per cent of the U.S. population think there is intelligent alien life on other planets. This month, the Daily Star announced they would be the first British newspaper to have a dedicated Extraterrestrial Affairs Correspondent, former THE FACE writer Michael Moran.

“Growing up, as I did, in the era of the Space Race, UFOs seemed perfectly plausible and worthy of being taken seriously,” he says. ​“I think we’re coming back to that point of view again. My publishers are smart people, they’ve identified that there’s a resurgent interest in the subject. Space is the biggest beat in journalism and if there’s anything to do with space, I’ll be giving it a look.”

The growth in interest isn’t hurt by the patronage of Joe Rogan, who regularly hosts conversations with UFO advocates like Area 51 whistle-blower Bob Lazar, journalist George Knapp, computer scientist Jacques Vallée and documentarian James Fox. ​“It’s a dangerous subject for someone, because you’re open to ridicule,” the podcast titan told his quarter of a million listeners in the spring. ​“Now we can say, ​‘Listen, this is not something to be mocked anymore. There’s something to this…’”

Perhaps this elimination of shame is the biggest shift in where ufology finds itself. Mainstream entertainment stars such as Demi Lovato, whose docuseries Unidentified with Demi Lovato began last week (to couch Lovato’s credibility, they also believe in mermaids), Miley Cyrus, Post Malone, January Jones, Alicia Keys and Zayn Malik have all spoken about alleged personal encounters with UFOs in recent years. People listened. Few laughed.

In pop culture, an alien influence is also taking root. Doja Cat​’s has previously described her thematic Planet Her album as ​“the centre of the universe”, where ​“all races of space exist and its where all species can kind of be in harmony there”. And anyone who might have caught Paco Rabanne’s latest ad might have thought the fragrance giant was advertising excursions to a far-off alien world, rather than a perfume. Not since David Bowie slunk into the skin of Ziggy Stardust has culture toyed so much with alien iconography.

“It’s about getting people curious because I think what’s coming is going to be really, really interesting”

Then there’s the strange case of former Blink-182 guitarist Tom DeLonge.

“When I started talking about the UFO stuff people thought I’d lost my mind,” says DeLonge, who founded the Las Vegas based company To The Stars… Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2017. ​“I do feel vindicated to a degree.” To The Stars… currently comprises of aerospace, science and entertainment divisions, working with the likes of Elizondo and Christopher Mellon, the former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence for Intelligence in the Clinton and George W. Bush administrations. It exists not only as a hub for DeLonge’s creative pursuits, but to help promote interest in ufology and the unexplained.

“I want to inspire wonder,” he continues, ​“and to inspire us to look around. It’s about getting people curious, to help them have the latitude to absorb the information. Because I think what’s coming is going to be really, really interesting.”

Can the human race handle what’s coming?

“I think they can,” he says. ​“I think that there’s elements of it that probably would be very hard to handle. And maybe a lot of people can’t, but I don’t think that’s the stuff that needs to come first. The way I see it is it’s kind of like telling your kids that terrorists exist. You don’t need to necessarily tell them about people’s heads getting chopped off. There’s a lot of unknowns. But look at COVID, the way the vaccines came about after great cooperation between different parties. I think humans can achieve and handle a lot.”

It’s perhaps not surprising that with life on earth looking more and more desperate, so many are looking to the stars in the hope of being saved. ​“The UFO is both satisfaction and salvation,” wrote Sarah Jones for New York Magazine this year. “[It’s] the manifestation of a near-religious impulse to find mystery in everyday life. I want to believe in aliens the same way I want to believe in God. Reality remains reality. God is silent and so are the aliens. It’s tempting, though, to imagine otherwise. To think that something more advanced than we visits our small and stupid planet. Even if that power means us ill, it can spell deliverance of a sort.”

In June came the Pentagon report – and a rebrand. Unidentified Arial Phenomena (UAP) is now preferred over UFO, putting a wedge between serious interest in what’s being seen in our skies and the pseudoscience that’s always dogged ufology. Ufologists have long pointed to the alleged spaceship crash at Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947 or the subsequent U.S. investigation ​“Project Blue Book” that ran between 1952 and 1969 as evidence we aren’t alone. But here was a sober, credible document that, while not providing many answers, shut few questions down. The report honed in on 144 sightings made since 2004 by U.S. military personnel. Some were dismissed as plastic bags or lens flare. Some were flagged as potential threats from rival superpowers like China or Russia. Some were classified simply as ​“other”. The report didn’t rule out the involvement of extraterrestrial life. It concluded by saying that more investigation was needed.

“The American people now know a small portion of what I and my colleagues in the Pentagon have been privy to,” says Elizondo, who is writing about his experiences working at the Pentagon in a book due to be published by HarperCollins. ​“That these UAP are not secret U.S. technology, that they do not seem to belong to any known allies or adversaries and that our intelligence services have yet to identify a terrestrial explanation for these extraordinary vehicles.”

“This conversation,” he concludes, ​“is only just beginning.”

UFOs 'Cause Lightning,' Blogger Claims Over 'Strange Silent Storm' Video

Biblical archeologists face a major challenge – a book that so many believe to be a historical record has few bona fide artifacts to back it up. While city walls, gates and buildings are interesting, and coins, etchings and pottery fragments are tantalizing, true believers want true historical artifacts. That list includes THE Holy Grail and many minor grails – two of which popped up in the news recently … Noah’s Ark and Mount Sinai. Have archeologists discovered the genuine grails or just more mirages?

“But what if these scholars have actually been looking in the wrong spot? Move over into the Arabian peninsula and you find incredibly compelling evidence matching the Biblical account.”

You know the story

The Doubting Thomas Research Foundation, a non-profit research group, is conducting both of these searches and president Ryan Mauro told The Sun that the mount named Sinai on Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula is not the biblical one where Moses was said to get the commandments, which is why no one has found any evidence to support the claim. His group is pushing for Jabal Maqla, a peak within the Jabal al-Lawz mountain range in the northwestern province of Saudi Arabia, as the real Mount Sinai. However, the evidence presented is more circumstantial than physical. He points to the blackened peaks of Jaal Maqla as the result of the biblical story of God descending on Mount Sinai in fire – a claim which can’t be physically verified. He then gives other circumstantial evidence to support the claim – a split rock that ‘could’ be the rock Moses made to gush water; stones that ‘could’ be altars; petroglyphs that ‘could’ depict people worshiping calves. Unfortunately, none of are a physical grail for Mount Sinai.

“This is not what you would expect to see if this site is just a solid block of rock or an accumulation of random debris from a mudflow. But these results are what you would expect to see if this is a man-made boat matching the Biblical requirements of Noah’s Ark.”

Did it really look like this?

Mauro tells The Sun of the results of the organization’s Noah’s Ark Scan which scanned a boat-shaped rock discovered in 1959 by Turkish army captain Ilhan Durupinar on Mount Tendürek in Turkey. Non-biblical archeologists and geologists have dismissed it as a boat-shaped rock, but Mauro claims new surveys using ground-penetrating radar found “parallel line and right angles below the surface” which are “something you would not expect to see in a natural, geologic formation.” This combined with the claim that the rock matches the ark dimensions given in the Hebrew bible story are the main ‘evidence’ presented. Is that enough to raise the funds to crack open the ark-rock and prove or disprove the theory? That remains to be seen.

This is not to discount the efforts of biblical archeologists but to point out that physical evidence is the cornerstone of science and these claims are more like the archeological equivalent of pareidolia – fitting patterns to fit what you want them to be. Wood, oars, bones, a list of animal passengers, stone tablets with ten sentences on them, the head of a golden calf, any port of a golden calf … these are the kinds of things that constitute physical evidence. The public is not biased toward believers … they want to believe but they need more than circumstantial evidence.

The vast majority of Bigfoot researchers subscribe to the viewpoint that Bigfoot is nothing stranger than a giant ape that science and zoology have yet to conclusively classify. There is, however, a small body of data that suggests Bigfoot is something far stranger than just a regular ape. Peppered throughout Bigfoot lore and history are stories of the beasts vanishing in flashes of light, of them fading away into nothingness, and of them becoming invisible to the human eye. This has given rise to an intriguing theory: that Bigfoot has the ability to traverse multi-dimensions. In other words, while the creatures may be comprised of flesh and blood, their overwhelming elusiveness may be due to the fact that they are only temporary visitors to our realm of existence. A perfect example has been recorded by Jack Lapseritis, author of The Psychic Sasquatch. He tells the story of a group of people that had an amazing encounter with a Bigfoot. The story came from a Mrs. Jeffery, and whose story Lapseritis summarizes as follows:

“After returning from a long hike, the group was stunned when a nine-to-ten foot Sasquatch stepped out in front of them a short distance away.  Then, in the twinkling of an eye, the Bigfoot completely disappeared in front of the witnesses!  The witnesses insisted that it literally dematerialized!  Mrs. Jeffrey reported that she was so awed at what she saw, that when they returned home, she did not leave the house for two weeks.  The woman was in such a total state of shock that she did not return to the area for some time.” Ronan Coghlan is the author of a number of acclaimed books, including A Dictionary of Cryptozoology and – with Gary Cunningham – The Mystery Animals of Ireland. In a 2012 interview with me, Coghlan provided his views on the nature of Bigfoot, and what he believes may be evidence of a link between the phenomenon and that of multi-dimensions. His words are primarily focused on Bigfoot in Britain, but they could quite easily apply to the creatures seen just about here, there, and everywhere.

“The idea that there is a viable, reproducing population of apes or humanoids in Britain is totally risible; it just couldn’t be. So, alternative explanations for their presence are to be sought,” begins Coghlan. “A lot of the British reports seem to be quite authentic. So, there probably are actual beasts or humanoids out there. And the question is: How did they arrive there in the first place?” Coghlan answers his question with the following words of reply: “It’s now becoming acceptable in physics to say there are alternative universes.” He continues on this controversial but thought-provoking path: “The main pioneer of this is Michio Kaku, of the City College of New York.  He has suggested that not only are there alternate universes, but when ours is about to go out in a couple of billion years, we might have the science to migrate to a more congenial one that isn’t going to go out. I think he expects science to keep improving for countless millennia, which is very optimistic of him, but whatever one thinks about that, the idea of alternative universes is now gaining an acceptance among physicists, and he’s the name to cite in this area.”

The subject is far from one lacking in mysteries and questions, however, as Coghlan acknowledges: “Now, how do you get into, or out of, alternative universes? Well, the answer is quite simple: You have heard of worm-holes, I’m sure? No-one has ever seen a worm-hole, I hasten to add. They are hypothetical, but mainstream physicists say they could be there, and there’s one particular type called the Lorentzian Traversable Wormhole. Physicists admit there is a possibility that this exists, and it would be like a short-cut, from one universe to another. Thus, for example, it’s rather like a portal: Something from the other universe would come through it. Or, something from another planet could come through it.” Turning his attentions towards the links between worm-holes and bizarre beasts, Coghlan comments that: “If there are any of these worm-holes on Earth, it would be quite easy for anything to come through, and it’s quite possible any number of anomalous creatures could find their way through from time to time. You remember John Keel and his window-areas? That would tend to indicate there’s a worm-hole in the vicinity; such as Point Pleasant, West Virginia, where the Mothman was seen.”

Nederlandse tourgids doet bijzondere ontdekking tijdens Noorderlicht-reis: “Wat is die witte schim?”

Reisgids Ramon Lucas uit het Nederlandse Wierden wist niet wat hij zag vorige week, tijdens een speurtocht naar het Noorderlicht in Noorwegen. Een witte schim vloog op een bepaald moment dwars door het magische groene licht heen. Wat was dit? “Dit is een hele bijzonder situatie”, kirt de Nederlander.

Noem de fotoserie die hij maakte gerust uniek. Ramon Lucas, reisgids bij Cape Tracks uit Wierden, heeft in zijn leven veel meegemaakt, maar hier keek zelfs hij van op. Op een heldere avond in de Lofoten - een eilandengroep in Noorwegen - was hij samen met reisgenoten bezig met een fotoshoot.

Ze hadden sowieso al geluk die avond, omdat het magische groene en mysterieuze Noorderlicht - een van 's werelds meest bijzondere natuurverschijnselen - fraai zichtbaar was vanaf de punt van het dorp. “Rond elf uur verscheen er opeens iets vreemds wits in de lucht, dat spontaan voorbij flitste”, beschrijft Lucas wat er toen gebeurde.

Dwars door de horizon

Een witte schim trok diagonaal door de horizon, dwars door het Noorderlicht. Lucas drukte snel af en legde het tafereel tot in detail vast. Zijn beelden zijn zo bijzonder, dat het onder UFO-gelovers vast voer voor discussie is.

Landsat 9

Het echte antwoord ligt iets anders, zo ontdekte de reisgids de volgende ochtend. En is iets minder spannend, maar nog steeds heel bijzonder. Het witte schijnsel betrof namelijk een raketlancering vanuit Californië, ruim 7.000 kilometer (!) verderop. Daar vertrok op dat tijdstip de Landsat 9, een aardobservatiesatelliet vanaf de Vandenberg Space Force Base in Californië. Voor de liefhebbers: dat gebeurde op een Atlas V 401-draagraket. 

Het gaat om een van de meest geavanceerde aardobservatiesatellieten, die elke zestien dagen onze aarde gedetailleerd in beeld zal moeten brengen.

Belgisch UFO-meldpunt

Ook bij ons werd de schim van de satellietlancering gespot: het Belgische UFO-meldpunt ontving heel wat meldingen, berichten en foto’s van een ongewoon lichtverschijnsel dat plotseling boven Vlaanderen was verschenen. “Die mensen mochten een vrij uniek verschijnsel waarnemen”, legde Frederick Delaere van het UFO-meldpunt uit bij HLN LIVE. “Het komt niet zo vaak voor dat je zo’n lancering ziet.”

Voor de Nederlandse reisgids blijft het helemaal speciaal. Tja, hij had er dan ook nog eens het magische Noorderlicht bovenop.

“Dit is een hele bijzondere situatie. Het vereist namelijk nogal wat geluk”, benadrukt hij. “Ten eerste is het Noorderlicht lang niet altijd zichtbaar. Raketlanceringen zijn er ook maar sporadisch en dan moet het ook nog eens helder zijn in de lucht.” En dan vergeet Lucas het belangrijkste nog: je moet er maar net staan om het ook op de gevoelige plaat vast te leggen.

Here’s Perseverance, Seen From Space

The Mars Perseverance rover is on the move! The HiRISE camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spotted the rover from above, the first view since shortly after the rover landed in February 2021. Perseverance appears as the white speck in the center of the image above, in the the “South Séítah” area of Mars’ Jezero Crater.

The HiRISE team said the rover is about 700 meters (2,300 feet) from its original landing site.

“The rover doesn’t drive in a straight line,” wrote team member Shane Byrne, “and has covered much more ground than that, and faint wheel tracks on the nearby ground are visible.”

You can see the various arrays of sand dunes in the image, and HiRISE shots like this one allow the rover team to choose the best route to get to their primary target. These images also help put the rover’s observations in context within Jezero Crater.

HiRISE also took dramatic images of the rover’s landing, nabbing a shot of Perseverance rover as it descended through the Martian atmosphere, hanging under its parachute, as well as photos of the “debris” from landing: the discarded backshell and parachute.

ESA’s Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) also took an image from orbit of Perseverance, about a week after the rover landed.

Perseverance will spend its mission (two years primary mission, which will likely be extended) searching for signs of past microbial life. Jezero Crater appears to have a preserved river delta and clay-rich sedimentary deposits, leading planetary geologists to deduce this crater could have hosted a standing body of water billions of years ago. For this reason, it was selected as the landing site for the mission, since it is believed to be a good place to find evidence of past life.

Rest assured, MRO and the other orbiters at Mars will continue sending back images of the various rovers and landers on Mars, and we’ll keep posting ‘em!

Its a well known fact among UFO researchers that UFOs cause natural disasters. UFO also cause lightning...to what end in unknown, but when they are in the area...the UFOs speed increases and the movement often becomes erratic and unpredictable. So from that I would assume that the UFOs are creating the lightning in order to harvest some of its energy or special particles of energy that we have not yet discovered, but may be used to power up the alien craft. This is 100% real and absolute proof that UFOs do cause lightning.

Take a look at this! The guy caught a dark UFO moving across Nevada yesterday. The object was seen crossing over Las Vegas...which is famous for its top secret USAF base...Nellis Air Force Base. This base is notorious for giving the "Tall White," aliens some land behind the old firing range back in the mountain range. This doesn't look like Tall White technology. Their ships usually glow white, but what they look like in the day...nobody knows. This dark cube UFO is something isn't it? Just so ominous sitting up there looking down on everyone and everything. Now this UFO is great. What I mean is the UFO was recorded over the worlds most powerful city in the world...Washington DC. There is even a monument in the background not far away from the UFO. During a silent lightning storm over Vineland, New York a strange cube shaped anomaly appears in the clouds.

UFOs flying over Denver, Colorado yesterday

These bright lights were filmed in the sky above Denver, Colorado on 4th October 2021.

On Monday the 4th of October at 7:35 pm I had taken my sick dog outside to use the restroom. I have to carry him out so after I set him down in the grass a bright light above me caught my eye. It was a very bright white light slowly moving from the north to the north east. It appeared to be moving strangely at times unnaturally almost scooting from one point to another while still on the path towards the north east. It didn’t have any blinking lights like a plane would and definitely was strange looking and acting, so I quickly ran in to get my phone so I could film it. I ran back out and begin to film. At that point I noticed it would periodically blink. As it flew over a plane flys by and you can clearly see the difference. Then as it got further away the light slowly dimmed until it was gone. It never came back. I stopped filming right before it disappeared then tried to start filming again as it disappeared but couldn’t catch it and I am kicking myself for it. I’d also like to mention I have a couple videos because I’d stop filming to move to the other side of my yard as it flew over because a tree was beginning to block my view. I also included the last 4 second video I took where I was trying to catch the last second of it disappearing, if anything you can see that it is gone and no longer there.

Northernmost Palaeolithic Settlement Reveals Mass Butchering of Woolly Mammoths

Scientists and archaeologists have discovered the world’s northernmost Palaeolithic settlement on Kotelny Island, 990 kilometers (615 miles) north of the Arctic Circle! Ancient hunters resided on this island off the coast of Yakutia, and their tools as well as several woolly mammoth bones provide evidence that they butchered the now extinct animal at the site.

“This is a unique event for the Arctic and world archaeology. We are talking about the northernmost human site in the Palaeolithic era ,” said Alexander Kandyba, senior researcher at the Stone Age Archaeology Department of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography, part of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The woolly mammoth faced its extinction after the waning of the last Ice Age, some 10,000 years ago, but their numbers dwindled throughout the preceding period due to widespread hunting - although isolated numbers remained until as recently as 4,000 years ago on Wrangel Island in the Arctic Ocean .

At the site on Kotelny Island called Taba-Yuryakh the team of scientists reconstructed up to 70% of the skeleton of one Palaeolithic mammoth that lived 26,000 years ago. It had been hunted and was feasted upon by early man, reports The Siberian Times . Alexander Kandyba said:

“The mammoth was butchered by people. A large number of processed bones and tusk fragments were found. There are linear cuts, traces of chopping blows on the vertebra. People used a wide range of tools for cutting. There is not a single bone that would be without traces of human impact. In particular, we now know how they butchered a mammoth.”

Woolly mammoths are the third most commonly depicted animal in cave paintings – this suggests that people hunted them not just for their meat, but for other uses too. Long, furry coats protected the animals from the harsh and frigid temperatures of the Ice Age , and large sebaceous glands secreted oil to waterproof their coats. Additionally, they had camel-like humps filled with fat to store extra nutrients for long winters, according to History of Yesterday .

The Palaeolithic, or Old Stone Age, is a period in human prehistory which was marked by the beginning and usage of rudimentary stone tools between the first recorded tools made by hominins 3.3 million years ago, to 11,500 years ago, when the Ice Age began to wane. This period was marked by nomadic hunting-gathering and the presence of small clans known as ‘bands’, who subsisted by gathering roots, berries, and plants or by scavenging and hunting animals.

After the waning of the Ice Age, Palaeolithic people found weather conditions ideal for settling down and practicing agriculture. While hunting and gathering continued at a reduced scale, the first societies began developing and social differentiation occurred – storage surpluses meant that jobs were created within the fold of a clan, while populations boomed as babies no longer had to be carried on people’s backs while moving. Plants and animals began to be domesticated, particularly Einkorn wheat, and animals like chickens, goats, sheep, and cattle were used for their resources.

Palaeolithic humans were living in Siberia above the Arctic Circle by 25,000 BC. This area, once a forest, became grasslands and savannas during this time period – the change in vegetation caused long-necked grazers to enter the region. Although the Taba-Yuryakh Palaeolithic settlement is now on an island, when the ancient humans inhabited the area it was connected to the mainland.

Within mainland Siberia, scattered patches of grasslands appeared, but with the slowly rising temperature, more and more ice melted, allowing human beings to enter previously inaccessible areas where they could hunt mammoths , which had formerly been out of their reach. Thus, a combination of global warming and hunting caused the population of mammoths to rapidly dwindle.

‘What I saw that night was real’: is it time to take aliens more seriously?

Andrew Abeyta, professor of psychology at Rutgers University, co-authored We Are Not Alone, a study into why some of us want to believe in aliens. Abeyta explains that belief in aliens is akin to religiosity: unfounded beliefs in unfalsifiable ideas, which require a leap of faith. “People have a need to feel like their lives are meaningful, and these beliefs might suggest that there’s something bigger out there; there’s something more important going on,” Abeyta says

I tell Abeyta about an interview I carried out with a young man in Florida. The man, who did not want to be named, described an ambiguous close encounter that took place during his sleep. When I asked him what he preferred the truth to be – a real encounter or merely a vivid dream – the young man said he would prefer it to be true because that would mean he was “special”.

“I can imagine being a protagonist in an alien-abduction story seems pretty meaningful, like a meaningful achievement, an accomplishment,” Abeyta says. That feeling of specialness plays an important role in these stories. “Feeling like your unexplained experience is a result of an alien abduction just seems more exciting and more important than a natural explanation.”

Still, the topic of alien encounters remains sensitive. I discovered just how sensitive when author Whitley Strieber, who some claim was abducted by non-humans in 1985, terminated our call after learning that I had not read his books. In a subsequent email, he wrote: “I don’t know if I was abducted by aliens or not. The whole point of my work is to describe what happened to me and attempt to understand what it was. I was turned into ‘alien abductee Whitley Strieber’ by the media. That is not my position.” He added: “You are lost in space when it comes to this subject, my friend – all of you.”

After I got off on the wrong foot with Strieber, though, he did come back and introduce me to highly decorated former US navy cryptologist Matthew Roberts. He was stationed on the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt when fighter jets recorded the infamous “Gimbal” and “Go Fast” videos of unexplained objects off the Florida coast during 2015, which went a long way to prompting the Pentagon’s UFO report.

Now retired from the military, Roberts is unmoved by the debunkers. “These things are picked up by multiple sensors that are sometimes from different manufacturers, so to think that they would all be glitching in the same way at the same time would just be impossible – it just doesn’t happen that way.”

Mick West, a science writer and video game programmer turned conspiracy-theory debunker, offers his own, more down-to-earth explanations for the objects: arguing that mundane things – tech glitches, camera glare, balloons and birds – are more likely than aliens.

However, now even the Pentagon has conceded there’s more to UFOs than that. In its nine-page report it states: “Most of the UAP reported probably do represent physical objects given that a majority of UAP were registered across multiple sensors, to include radar, infrared, electro-optical, weapon seekers and visual observation.” In other words, there was something out there and the images were not technical glitches. I ask Roberts about a theory put forward by West that the Gimbal object was glare caused by a nearby aircraft. “All aircraft – nationally, internationally – have to broadcast who they are. If they’re not broadcasting that, that’s very unusual. Mick West, bless his soul, he has never been in the military,” he says.

Roberts explains that, after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, unidentified air tracks escalate very quickly. “It will go to the captain, it will go to the admiral, and they’ll want to know what that is because the thought would immediately be: ‘Is this a commercial airliner? Has it been hijacked?’ We’re not as incompetent as Mick West would have you believe. If something is unidentified, it absolutely has to be identified immediately.”

Despite the debunkers and proliferation of more mundane explanations for UFOs, reports of close encounters have persisted for decades. Terry Lovelace, a retired assistant attorney general in Vermont, USA, and author of Incident at Devil’s Den, kept his abduction to himself for 40 years due to fear of losing his job. He had a close encounter in 1977 while serving in the US air force.

Lovelace, now 67, was on a camping trip in Devil’s Den state park in northern Arkansas with a friend and colleague named Toby when things got strange. They were sitting around a fire, struggling to chat over the din of buzzing crickets and croaking tree frogs before everything went quiet. “That sounds kind of clichéd – out of a movie – but that is exactly what happened to us,” he says.

Three bright lights appeared on the horizon and moved in their direction. When the lights were overhead, they could see that they were emanating from a black triangular prism as wide as two city blocks.

A blue laser beam darted over them, which Lovelace thought was scanning them. When it shut off, they became sleepy. Next thing, he woke and saw Toby peering out of the tent. The triangle was hovering above what appeared to be a dozen children standing in a meadow below them. “What are these kids doing out here in the middle of the night?” said Lovelace.

“They aren’t little kids. Don’t you remember they took us and they hurt us?” Toby answered.

Lovelace says the moment Toby said that, fragmented memories of being inside the UFO flashed in his mind. Years later, hypnosis helped him fill in more blanks and he recalled actually encountering creatures while inside the UFO.

‘People who were previously disbelieved and ridiculed should be listened to and given a hearing’, says Nick Pope.

For some, the fact that the Pentagon has finally admitted it cannot explain the behaviour of the objects may have been a surprise but, for PC Alan Godfrey, 73, it merely proves what he already knows.

On a windswept and wet West Yorkshire evening in November 1980, Godfrey was in hot pursuit of a herd of escaped cows in Todmorden’s housing estate. Instead of cows, he stumbled across a giant levitating diamond that would change the course of his life. Godfrey’s close encounter with this UFO went viral worldwide and transformed Todmorden into Britain’s Roswell.

Godfrey, a no-nonsense Yorkshireman born and raised in Oldham, is long retired from the force but still recalls the events of that night when he came face to face with the peculiar object – a diamond-shaped aircraft hovering 5ft off the ground while spinning on its axis.

He just had time to sketch the UFO on his notepad before he was blinded. In his next moment of conscious awareness, he was sitting in his patrol car. The UFO was gone. “I got out of the car, looked at the road surface, and it was like a whirlpool,” he says. The UFO’s rapid revolutions had arranged the dead leaves, twigs and other debris into an autumn-themed spiral.

In the aftermath of his encounter, he had visits from the Ministry of Defence, correspondence from a Russian scientist and interest from the world’s press. He even underwent hypnosis to uncover memories of his abduction.

Godfrey was ridiculed for years – many who claim to have had encounters with UFOs are reluctant to go on the record for fear of the same treatment – but things are changing. High-ranking government officials such as Christopher Mellon, a former US secretary for defence in intelligence, and Luis Elizondo, former director of AATIP, insist that there are aircraft in our skies that don’t obey the known laws of physics. Even Barack Obama has gone on record on the subject, talking to CBS this year: “There’s footage and records of objects in the skies, that we don’t know exactly what they are, we can’t explain how they moved, their trajectory. They did not have an easily explainable pattern. And so, you know I think that people still take seriously trying to investigate and figure out what that is. But I have nothing to report to you today.”

When it comes to abduction stories, sceptics will say these encounters are either hoaxes or accounts of vivid dreams or hallucinations. Christopher French, emeritus professor of psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London, has spent years studying the paranormal and argues that sleep paralysis is a better explanation for many of these stories. “In some cases, you get associated symptoms, and they include a sense of presence; a very strong feeling that there’s something in the room with you,” French says. He adds that sufferers might hallucinate and “see strange lights moving around the room or strange figures or shadow people”.

That doesn’t fit for Godfrey’s story – he was driving and on duty at the time. “I think in Alan Godfrey’s case, he was sleep-deprived; he had been on duty for a long time. The most likely explanation is some kind of hallucinatory experience due to tiredness,” says French. What about the story he told under hypnosis? “The thing with hypnotic regression is that it is one of the best ways known of generating false memories. If you go for hypnotic regression expecting to recover memories of alien abduction, there’s a very good chance that’s what you’ll get.”

But Nick Pope, a former UFO investigator for the Ministry of Defence, is not convinced and thinks that Godfrey is genuine. “He had a lot to potentially lose by coming out with this and yet stuck to his guns.”

Doesn’t a hallucination explain what he saw? “I get that people do have hallucinations, but they tend to be the result of either mental illness or some sort of hallucinogenic substance, and this guy was on duty and was, by all accounts, rational. And so those explanations don’t seem to apply – I’m stumped when it comes to that particular case. Ask yourself: how many times have you been tired and come to the end of a long day? We’ve all been in that situation, and we don’t suddenly construct bizarre narratives about spacecraft and aliens.”

Is it time to start taking these stories more seriously? “I’m not saying that I believe it’s literally true that these are alien spaceships,” says Pope. “But at the very least, these people who were previously disbelieved and ridiculed should be listened to and given a hearing.

“For everyone who tells you these people are attention seekers after fame and fortune, I would say, ‘What fame? What fortune?’ Who outside the UFO community has heard of Alan Godfrey or Terry Lovelace?”

When expert military witnesses describe the sorts of speeds that are reported, I sit up and take note

Does Pope think ETs are among us? “I don’t know. I am certain that they are out there, but whether they’re down here or not? I don’t know. I think it’s much more likely that we’re dealing with unmanned probes.”

If not hallucinations, equipment glitches or mistakes, many will say black ops, conducted by the US, China, Russia, or other militaries, are a more plausible explanation than aliens. “I accept that most military personnel won’t have sight of every single black project and, therefore, won’t necessarily know about every secret prototype, aircraft or drone that’s flying,” says Pope. “But the military and government, and the intelligence community have a pretty good idea of roughly where the ceiling is in terms of technology. So, when these expert military witnesses describe the sorts of speeds, accelerations, manoeuvres that are reported with these sorts of incidents, I sit up and take note.”

Whatever one thinks about the veracity of these stories, many of the people who tell them believe they are real, and some suffer from severe mental illness in the aftermath. Chris French says the levels of psychological arousal in people living with PTSD go “through the roof” when they’re asked to retell their stories. “If you do the same thing with the alien abductees, you get the same thing.”

Lovelace’s night in Devil’s Den changed his life and the life of his friend Toby. The US air force got wind of their ordeal and, per military protocol, separated and reassigned them. Lovelace ignored his orders and visited Toby to say goodbye. “Toby was falling apart,” Lovelace says. The two embraced. Toby said: “It happened, didn’t it?” “Yes, my brother, it really happened. You’re not losing your mind,” Lovelace replied.

Lovelace has suffered enormously since that night. “I’ve had 40 years’ of nightmares. I still have a phobia of crossing open ground. I still sleep with a light on and a gun beside my bed.” But he feels vindicated by acknowledgments made by the US government, military personnel and Obama. “I’ve got a long list of people that I’m going to email and say, ‘I told you so.’”

For Godfrey, it’s 40 years too late. He is adamant about what he saw that morning in Todmorden. “I’ve had all sorts: you fell into some sort of trance when you were driving – all that shit. No, it was real. It left debris on the road – my headlights were reflecting off it, as were the blue lights. This was a real incident. I didn’t need the Pentagon to tell me there are things out there. I know what I saw that night was real, nuts and bolts. If I’d got out and thrown a brick at it, it would have gone, ‘Clang!’ It doesn’t change what happened to me and how I was treated back then.”

The future of vaccines? Scientists develop a 3D-printed microneedle patch that could offer a pain-free alternative to jabs

Scientists have developed a tiny 3D-printed microneedle vaccine patch that could offer a pain-free alternative to needles.  

In trials on mice, it offered a 10-fold greater immune response and a 50-fold greater T-cell and antigen-specific antibody response compared with a needle in the arm. 

The polymer patch, which is smaller than a 5p coin, needs lower doses and could be mailed to people's homes and self-administered, eliminating the need for trained medical personnel. 

It also offers an 'anxiety-free' vaccination option for people who have a 'needle phobia', also known as trypanophobia, which is putting some off getting their Covid jabs. 

The researchers are yet to conduct clinical trials of the patch on humans, which could pave the way for a new way of administering vaccines in the future.  

Researchers from Carolina and Stanford University have developed a microneedle vaccine patch that outperforms a needle jab to boost immunity. It also doesn't need to reach as deep as a needle, researchers claim 

The new vaccine patch has been developed by researchers at Stanford University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. 

'In developing this technology, we hope to set the foundation for even more rapid global development of vaccines, at lower doses, in a pain- and anxiety-free manner,' said lead study author Joseph M. DeSimone, a professor of chemical engineering at Stanford University. 

The microneedle patches were 3D printed using a CLIP prototype 3D printer that DeSimone invented and is produced by CARBON, a Silicon Valley company co-founded by Professor DeSimone.  

3D-printing uses software to create a three dimensional design before being printed by robotic equipment.

Automated robotic arms have a nozzle at the end that emit the printing substance – in this case polymer – layer by layer. 

Thanks to the flexibility of 3D printing, the microneedles can be easily customised to develop various vaccine patches for flu, measles, hepatitis or Covid-19 vaccines. 

While vaccines are typically administered as injections under the skin, there is increasing interest in what's known as intradermal injections - more shallow injections that only reach the dermis of the skin, which is located between the epidermis and the hypodermis. 

Beyond the hypodermis is the fat and muscle that a traditional vaccine needle usually penetrates. 

Intradermal injections are suitable for vaccinations as human skin is rich in immune cells (Langerhans cells and dermal dendritic cells), the researchers point out.

The current coronavirus pandemic has been a stark reminder of the difference made with timely vaccination, according to the researchers – but getting a vaccine typically requires a visit to a clinic, hospital or vaccine centre.

There, a healthcare provider obtains a vaccine from a refrigerator, fills a syringe with the liquid vaccine formulation and injects it into the arm.

Although this process seems simple, there are issues that can hinder mass vaccination – from cold storage of vaccines to needing trained professionals who can give the shots.

The vaccine patch, on the other hand, could be shipped anywhere in the world without special handling, letting people apply the patch themselves, a bit like at-home Covid testing.

The patch's microneedles would be coated in the vaccine fluid, which would be painlessly applied to the skin. 

The microneedles could be fabricated using 3D-printing from a range of materials – solid metal and silicon, for example, as well as polymers. 

It's generally a challenge to adapt microneedles to different vaccine types, said lead study author Shaomin Tian, a researcher in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology in the UNC School of Medicine.

'These issues, coupled with manufacturing challenges, have arguably held back the field of microneedles for vaccine delivery,' she said.

Most microneedle vaccines are fabricated with master templates to make molds.

However, the molding of microneedles is not very versatile, and drawbacks include reduced needle sharpness during replication.

3D-printing offers microneedles of controlled geometries, which is difficult to achieve using traditional methods.   

The ease of using the vaccine patch may lead to higher vaccination rates and avoid vaccine hesitancy during future pandemics.  

The team of microbiologists and chemical engineers are continuing to innovate by formulating RNA vaccines, like the Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines, into microneedle patches for future testing.

The study has been published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

• It can reach speeds of 300 MPH (483 KPH), which is a record for an electric plane.

This is an extremely powerful machine, but don’t think that its battery juice is depleted in just 15 minutes, as this was only a tentative demonstration. Rolls-Royce says the range should reach about 200 miles (322 km), but obviously, one would have to travel at lower, cruising speeds to achieve that. On a single charge, and by not being pushed too hard, it should be able to fly from London to Paris.

The marvel of engineering that is the ‘Spirit of Innovation’ extends to all its systems and subcomponents. For example, the energy efficiency of the electric powertrain is 90%, reaching unprecedented levels. The battery cells contain a cooling system that regulates its performance automatically, ensuring that the pack remains safe and stable.

Rolls-Royce believes in this projectsso much that they are planning to actually deliver a “toned-down” all-electric passenger aircraft based on the ‘Spirit of Innovation’ to Widerøe, the largest regional airline in Scandinavia, as soon as by 2026.

Cosmic Record Holders: The 12 Biggest Objects in the Universe

The universe is a big place, and it's full of big things. Planets, stars, galaxies and clusters of galaxies extend upward on ever-more-massive scales. Here we marvel at some of the record holders in different cosmic categories, perhaps feeling humbled by the universe's ability to produce entities of incredible size and grandeur. 

1. Largest exoplanet: GQ Lupi b

Astronomers weren't sure what to make of the mysterious GQ Lupi b when it was first discovered in 2005. Orbiting a young star around two and a half times farther than Pluto is from the sun, the companion object seemed to be either a planet or a brown dwarf, which is actually a type of small star. Subsequent observations have yet to clear up the confusion, but the best estimates suggest GQ Lupi b has a radius around 3.5 times that of Jupiter, meaning that if it is an exoplanet, it's the largest ever found.

2. Largest star: UY Scuti

UY Scuti is a hypergiant star with a radius that's around 1,700 times larger than the sun, making it the biggest known star in the universe. If someone were to place UY Scuti at the center of the solar system, its edge would extend just beyond the orbit of Jupiter. Gas and dust streaming from the star would extend even farther out, beyond the orbit of Pluto, or around 400 times the Earth-sun distance.

3. Largest Nebula: The Tarantula Nebula

Both the largest known nebula and most active star-forming region in our local galactic neighborhood, the Tarantula Nebula stretches for more than 1,800 light-years at its longest span. Also known as 30 Doradus, the object is located 170,000 light-years from Earth in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a small satellite galaxy that orbits our Milky Way. Rather than a killer arachnid, this Tarantula is a stellar nursery — within its beautiful folds of gas and dust young stars are being born.

4.  Largest empty spot: Supervoid in Eridanus

In 2004, astronomers noticed a gigantic region of empty space in maps created by NASA's Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) satellite, which scanned in exquisite detail the cosmic microwave background, or the leftover radiation from the Big Bang. The spot, which spans 1.8 billion light-years across, according to Vice, is strangely devoid of stars, gas, dust and even dark matter. While they have seen previous voids, researchers remain baffled as to how exactly one of this size and scale formed. 

5. Largest galaxy: IC 1101

Our Milky Way galaxy is around 100,000 light-years across, but that's fairly average for a spiral galaxy. In comparison, the largest known galaxy, called IC 1101, is 50 times larger and about 2,000 times more massive than our galactic home. Stretching for an impressive 5.5 million light-years, IC 1101 is so big that, if placed where the Milky Way is now, its edge would reach past our nearest galactic neighbor, Andromeda. 

6. Largest black hole: TON 618

Supermassive black holes are thought to lurk in the center of every galaxy and can clock in at many millions of times the mass of the sun. But the biggest known black hole can be found powering a distant quasar — gigantic objects in the early universe spewing out insane amounts of radiation. This one, known as TON 618, has an estimated mass of 66 billion suns, according to a statement.  

7. Largest galactic farts: Fermi Bubbles

In 2010, astronomers using the Fermi space telescope discovered colossal structures emerging from the Milky Way. These massive blobs, which can only be seen in certain wavelengths of light, are a towering 25,000 light-years tall (a quarter of the Milky Way's width). Researchers believe the bubbles are the result of an ancient feeding frenzy that our galaxy's central black hole experienced, resulting in enormous belches of energy. 

8. Largest single object: Protocluster SPT2349-56

Back when the universe was only a tenth of its current age, 14 galaxies began crashing together and forming the most massive known gravitationally bound cosmic object, protocluster SPT2349-56. Squeezed together in a space that's only about three times as big as our Milky Way galaxy, this megamerger will eventually combine into a single galaxy weighing 10 trillion times the mass of the sun. Additional observations have revealed that around 50 additional galaxies surround the structure, which will settle into a gigantic object known as a galactic cluster, in which many galaxies orbit one another.

9. Largest galactic collection: Shapley Supercluster

Astronomer Harlow Shapley discovered a colossal collection of galaxies in the 1930s that now bears his name. Containing more than 8,000 galaxies and with a mass of more than 10 million billion times that of the sun, the Shapley Supercluster is the largest structure in the local universe, according to the European Space Agency.

10. Largest supercluster: Laniakea Supercluster

Our Milky Way is just a tiny member of a gargantuan collection of collections of galaxies known as the Laniakea Supercluster. Though it has no formal boundaries, astronomers estimate that it contains around 100,000 galaxies with a total mass about 100 million billion times that of the sun, and stretches for more than 520 million light-years across.  

11. Largest quasar collection: Huge-LQG

The distant black-hole-powered superbright objects known as quasars are already mighty large. But sometimes, quasars can come together into clusters, with the largest one imaginatively named the Huge-LQG (for Huge Large Quasar Group). Containing 73 quasars and an estimated mass of 6.1 quintillion (that's a 1 followed by 18 zeros) suns, the colossal cosmic collection is thought to be 4 billion light-years across at its biggest span, according to The Atlantic.

12. Largest thing in the universe: Hercules-Corona Borealis Great Wall

By mapping the locations of gamma-ray bursts — fleeting but powerful explosions that occur when a massive star dies — astronomers uncovered what is often considered to be the largest known entity in the cosmos: the Hercules-Corona Borealis Great Wall. The object is 10 billion light-years across and could contain billions of galaxies. The Great Wall was first discovered in 2013 when surveys showed gamma-rays particularly concentrated about 10 billion light-years away in the direction of the Hercules and Corona Borealis constellations.

The Kardashov Scale is a method to measure the degree of technological evolution of a civilization, proposed in 1964 by the Russian astrophysicist Nikolai Kardashov.

Now, two specialists from the Netherlands, Hongin Chen and Michael Garrett, used a special modern radio interferometer LOFAR during their space exploration.

Because of this, they managed to find two galaxies in which civilizations of the third type on the Kardashov scale may be present.

We have reached a key point in human civilization. According to renowned theoretical physicist Michio Kaku, the next 100 years in science will determine whether we survive as a species, or become extinct.

In other words, we can reach the stars, or we will remain a Type 0 civilization.

Experts say that as a civilization grows and becomes more advanced, its energy needs grow as well. This is because the population grows and with it the machinery necessary to keep it standing.

With this as a principle, the Kardashov Scale was developed as a way to measure the technological progress of a civilization, based on the amount of energy it has at its disposal.

The third type means that this civilization is the most developed and can use the energy of the entire galaxy for its own purposes.

It is worth noting that today humanity has not yet been able to obtain the status of even the first kind. Such a civilization uses all the energy that is available on the planet of residence.

The reason for this is that people do not know how to use all the solar energy that reaches the Earth. It may take humanity about 200 years to become a Type 1 civilization.

Scientists believe that they will be able to find a superintelligent civilization because in the future they will investigate radiation in the mid-infrared range.

They can indicate the presence of Dyson spheres in outer space. A total of 21 galaxies have been studied. Four objects attracted attention, two of which were of natural origin.

NASA released its first digital, interactive graphic novel on Saturday in celebration of National Comic Book Day. “First Woman: NASA’s Promise for Humanity” imagines the story of Callie Rodriguez, the first woman to explore the Moon.

While Callie’s story is fictional, the first woman and the first person of color will walk on the Moon, achieving these historic milestones as part of NASA’s Artemis missions. Through this graphic novel, NASA aims to inspire the next generation of explorers – the Artemis Generation.

Pentagon Urged to Commit to 'Consistent’ Probing of 'Unidentified Aerial Phenomena'

The US Defence Department is being urged to oversee "the timely and consistent reporting" of what the military refers to as "unidentified aerial phenomena."

Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., who chairs the Armed Services Subcommittee on Intelligence and Special Operations, has pushed through a provision in the House of Representatives’ fiscal 2022 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) proposal, passed Thursday, to form a permanent office under the Defense Secretary for the purpose within 180 days.

Officials would be tasked with “carrying out, on a department-wide basis, the mission currently performed by the Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon Task Force” to probe government and military reports of unexplained sightings in the skies. The temporary UAP Task Force had been set up in 2020, after a plethora of reports of unexplained craft spotted in the skies were augmented by Pentagon-released three videos from the Navy.

The footage, made public in April after its authenticity had been confirmed, depicted airborne objects operating in the vicinity of military bases and restricted airspace in inexplicably aerodynamic ways.

“The aerial phenomena observed in the videos remain characterized as ‘unidentified,’” the agency revealed at the time.

According to the new legislation put forth by the Marine Corps combat veteran, the Pentagon office would also be required to share its findings on what is commonly called “Unidentified Flying Objects”, or UFOs, annually with Congress. Data would be gleaned from a variety of intelligence-gathering tools, ranging from satellites and electronic devices to human spies, stipulates the legislation.

"I decided to actually put action to words. We had a briefing on this phenomenon. One of the things that came out of that briefing, without breaking too many walls here, was that there just needed to be better data collection. There needs to be standardised data collection across the services," said Gallego.

"There's been a total lack of focus across the national security apparatus to actually get at what's happening here… I think there has been kind of a partial pastime of curiosity seekers that are within the Department of Defense but there has not been any professional initiative across the defense enterprise," the Arizona Democrat was cited by Politico as saying. The new office will be seeking to “synchronise and standardise the collection, reporting, and analysis of incidents regarding unidentified aerial phenomena across the Department of Defense," according to the provision.

The legislation, which now goes to the Senate, entrusts the military with determining whether the UAPs may possibly be linked to "non-state actors", or, in other words, potentially threatening foreign adversaries.

UAP Phenomena

The new legislation comes against the backdrop of numerous reports in recent years by Navy pilots and other military personnel who claimed to have observed highly advanced craft of puzzling origin that “appear to demonstrate advanced technology". The objects spotted were described as manoeuvring in ways seemingly defying current aerodynamics.

The reports triggered a succession of classified briefings to members of Congress. However, a public report in last year's intelligence bill concluded in a "preliminary assessment" in June that neither military nor intelligence agencies possessed enough information to make any conclusions regarding the over 100 reported UAP sightings.

In August, Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall dismissed the UAP phenomena as a not worthy of being regarded as a “threat”.

“I don’t consider it an imminent threat to the United States or the human race, these phenomena occurring… I would have to see evidence that it was something worthy of the attention of the United States Air Force as a threat," he was cited as saying by Politico.

According to Ruben Gallego, an effort ought to be made to “break down the stigma of reporting” so-called UFO phenomena.

“There are a lot of people who are afraid of reporting this because they're afraid ... it's going to cost their careers. People think they're crazy… We're not going to be able to get to the bottom of this unless we …get enough information to figure out exactly what's going on [and] the pilots and other people who have seen it actually feel comfortable talking about it," said the congressman.

Giant 4,000-year-old bull geoglyph that is thousands of years older than Peru’s Nazca Lines and England’s ‘White Horse’ is discovered at an early Bronze era burial site in Russia

A geoglyph of a bull discovered in Siberia dates back more than 4,000 years, making it twice as old as the famed Nazca lines of Peru and a millennia older than Uffington's chalk-lined White Horse.

Geoglyphs, which often have spiritual or religious meaning, are large designs made in the ground that can typically only be seen from the air. 

The bull, which measures 10 feet tall by 13 feet long, is formed from carefully arranged pebbles and sandstone.

It was part of a larger Early Bronze Age burial site uncovered near Khondergey, a village in southwest Tuva close to Russia’s border with Mongolia.

This is the first animal geoglyph found in this part of Central Asia, according to archaeologists at the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Institute of the History of Material Culture, who participated in the discovery.

Archaeologists in Siberia have discovered a bull geoglyph they believe is more than 4,000 years old—a millennia older than Uffington’s White Horse and twice as old as the famed Nazca lines of Peru

‘The bull motif is very typical for the Central Asia cultures of the Early Bronze Era,’ Marina Kilunovskaya, head of Tuva Archaeological Expedition, told The Siberian Times. ‘Later in the Scythian era, bulls were replaced by deers.’ 

Kilunovskaya said petroglyphs, or rock carvings, of bulls have been discovered in Tuva and the surrounding regions before but this is the first animal geoglyph.

‘We didn’t previously find such stone compositions.’ she told the Times.

Only the back half of the bovine remains—its front was destroyed by road construction in the 1940s. Members of the expedition hope the bull’s rear will be better preserved.

Geoglyphs have been discovered in diverse corners of the world: In addition to the Nazca Lines in Peru and Uffington’s White Horse in England, the Blythe Intaglios are a group of gigantic figures carved into the ground in the Colorado Desert near Blythe, California, that have been radiocarbon-dated to between 900 and 1200 BC.

The Cerne Abbas Giant in Dorset, England, is a 180-foot tall nude male figure with a prominent erection and  large club.

The phallic figure's outline was made by digging two-feet deep trenches into the ground and filling it with crushed chalk. 

Dates for when it was carved have ranged from the Middle Ages to the 17th century, but using optically stimulated luminescence,  scientists have placed it much further back, somewhere between  700 1110 AD.

The oldest known geoglyph is also in Russia, though some 1,100 miles away from the Tuva bull: An enormous moose only clearly visible from the sky in Chelyabinsk dates to about 6,000 years ago.

The moose, sometimes labeled an elk, was incised on the Zyuratkul Mountains. It stretches for about 902 feet and depicts an animal with four legs, antlers, and a long muzzle.

Only discovered in 2011 using satellite imaging, the moose is also the largest-known figurative geoglyph, as opposed to an abstract or geometric design.

Stone tools uncovered by archaeologists at the site show indicate were made to fit the hands of children, who partook in the glyph’s creation.

'But it was not a kind of slave labor of children,’ Stanislav Grigoryev, a senior researcher from the Chelyabinsk History and Archaeology Institute, told The Siberian Times. ‘They were involved to share common values, to join something important to all the people.'

In 2014, dozens of 50 geoglyphs of various shapes and sizes, including a massive swastika, were discovered across northern Kazakhstan.

WHAT ARE PERU'S MYSTERIOUS 'NAZCA LINES'?

Geoglyphs span large land tracts located between the towns of Palpa and Nazca. Some geoglyphs depict animals, objects or compact shapes; others are only simplistic lines.

The Nazca people lived in the area from 200 to 700 CE. Some of the designs are believed to be created instead by the Topará and Paracas people.

Most of the lines are formed by a shallow trench with a depth of between four inches (10cm) and six inches (15cm), made by removing the reddish-brown iron oxide-coated pebbles that cover the surface of the Nazca desert and exposing the light-colored earth beneath.

This sublayer contains high amounts of lime which has hardened to form a protective layer that shields the lines from winds and prevents erosion.

Paul Kosok, from Long Island University, is credited as the first scholar to seriously study the Nazca Lines.

He discovered that the lines converged at the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere.

Along with Maria Reiche, a German mathematician and archaeologist, Kosok proposed the figures were markers on the horizon to show where the sun and other celestial bodies rose.

A newly discovered geoglyph in Siberia predates those found at the famous Nazca Lines in Peru. The pebble and sandstone bull, which measures 3 by 4 meters (9.8 by 13.1 feet), is the first ever animal geoglyph that has been found in that specific part of the planet.

This newfound geoglyph was discovered near the village of Khondergey in the southwestern part of the Republic of Tuva. And it is ancient as it was associated with burials from over 4,000 years ago during the Early Bronze Era. This means that it is a thousand years older than the Uffington White Horse in England, and twice as old as Peru’s Nazca Lines.

The Nazca Lines are a group of geoglyphs that are found over an area of almost 190 square miles (492 square kilometers) and the majority of them date back about 2,000 years. The Uffington White Horse was carved into the white chalk hillside of England’s Berkshire Downs approximately 3,000 years ago. And earlier this year, a gigantic spiral geoglyph found in India’s Thar Desert is believed to be the largest on the entire planet.

As for the geoglyph found in Siberia, unfortunately the front part of the bull was destroyed when a road was constructed at the site back in the 1940s. The only remaining parts of the geoglyph are the bull’s backside, hind legs, and tail.

Marina Kilunovskaya, who is the head of the Tuva Archaeological Expedition, described the discovery in further details, “We do see bulls as petroglyphs around Tuva and the neighboring territories – but coming across the animal geoglyph is a unique discovery for the whole region of Central Asia. We didn’t previously find such stone compositions.” Geoglyphs are big motifs (normally larger than 4 meters or 13.1 feet) in the ground that were made by stones, pebbles, gravel, or by removing the soil to create lines. Petroglyphs are designs that were made by carvings or chippings in rock surfaces.

Interestingly, during the Early Bronze Era, cultures from Central Asia used bull motifs quite often, while deer were used years later during the Scythian times.

Kilunovskaya went on to say, “Although we can recognize the bull depiction, allowing us to reconstruct the lost parts with a high degree of probability, we have never seen stone layouts such as these before. In our opinion, the uniqueness of the find and the threat to the site due to the adjacent road requires further preservation.”

Ook Glen de Vries gaat mee, hij is medeoprichter van Medidata Solutions, een bedrijf dat is gespecialiseerd in software voor het monitoren van klinische proeven voor de farmaceutische industrie en dat in 2019 werd overgenomen door Dassault Systèmes.

WHEN WILL WE MEET ALIENS? 3 PARAMETERS REVEAL THE TIMELINE

SEVENTY YEARS AGO, ITALIAN-AMERICAN nuclear physicist Enrico Fermi asked his colleagues a question during a lunchtime conversation. If life is common in our Universe, why can’t we see any evidence of its activity out there (aka. “where is everybody?”)

Seventy years later, this question has launched just as many proposed resolutions as to how extraterrestrial intelligence (ETIs) could be common, yet go unnoticed by our instruments.

On the other hand, some argue that if intelligent species had emerged millions or billions of years before humans even existed, would they not have gone on to occupy the visible Universe to a significant extent? Does the fact that we don’t see any GCs when we look up into the night sky not support the notion that no one is out there, or at least not in a position to communicate with us yet?

Others still have argued that a 4.5 billion evolutionary timeline means that only longer-lived stars and planets could support life, such as M-type (red dwarfs). These stars are known to have incredibly long lifespans, remaining in their main sequence phase for up to trillions of years. At the same time, recent exosolar planet surveys have suggested that they are the most likely place to find rocky planets orbiting within their habitable zones (HZs). As Hanson explained to Universe Today via email:

“Ninety-five percent of planets are around longer-lived stars than ours, and most live longer than a trillion years. Furthermore, advanced life like us should appear toward the end of a planet’s life, as life needs to first evolve through many stages. So we are quite early compared to when we’d expect advanced life to appear.”

So while our planet has only existed during the past 30 percent of the Universe, our evolutionary timeline corresponds to one percent of the lifespans of long-lived planets. Essentially, this means that 99 percent of advanced lifeforms in our Universe will appear after today. Add to that the fact that we do not see evidence of alien civilizations occupying the majority of the cosmos (something that becomes more likely with time), and one is left with the foregone conclusion that humanity is an “early arrival.”

PARAMETER 2: STEPPING HARD!

The second parameter (n) is based on the notion that biological evolution can be modeled based on a number of steps. This concept was introduced by Australian physicist and Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) Brandon Carter, renowned for having coined the Anthropic Principle. In response to what he saw as the overextension of the Copernican Principle in cosmology, this principle states that the very existence of intelligent life indicates that the Universe itself is conducive to its creation.

In a 1983 study titled “The Anthropic Principle and its Implications for Biological Evolution,” Carter presented a statistical model of how civilizations like ours might arise from simple dead matter via a series of intermediate steps. Since then, many scholars have built on his model, which includes Hanson himself. In 1996, Hanson published an essay titled “The Great Filter — Are We Almost Past It?” wherein he proposed that the Fermi Paradox could be the result of one or more of these steps being improbable.

Using life on Earth as a template, Hanson argued that there were eight possible steps between the earliest known life forms and where humanity is today, with a ninth step representing our possible future. These consist of:

1. Habitable star system (organics and habitable planets)
2. Reproductive molecules (e.g., RNA)
3. Prokaryotic single-cell life
4. Eukaryotic single-cell life
5. Sexual reproduction
6. Multi-cell life
7. Animals capable of using tools
8. Industrial civilization
9. Wide-scale colonization

With every step, the probability for failure increases, a situation that Hanson summarized using a lockpicking analogy. Imagine you have a series of locks that you need to pick before a deadline, and they have different levels of difficulty. The odds of picking all the locks before the deadline is up is a power law, where a change in one quantity gives rise to a proportional rise in another quantity.

For the sake of this study, Hanson and his colleagues reconsidered these steps, taking into account that some may take longer to achieve than others (what they group as “easy” or “hard” steps). The combination of these steps is what they referred to as the “hard steps power law,” where each step has an impact on whether or not a species could advance sufficiently before another GC occupied their space and suppressed them. As Hanson explained it:

“The timing of events in the history of life on Earth suggests that there were three to nine hard steps that life had to go through to reach our level and that most planets like ours never achieve our level before the window for life on that planet closes. Thus, advanced life like ours is rare. We can also see that it is rare because we don’t see any life out there at the more advanced level of making big visible impacts on the universe.

“Thus, we know there is a ‘great filter’ standing between simple dead matter and expanding lasting life. Our new analysis allows us to estimate the numerical magnitude of this filter. Advanced life at the grabby aliens level appears roughly once per million galaxies before the grabby aliens deadline.”

In other words, there is a deadline for advanced life in the Universe, where it must emerge and reach complexity before a more ancient and advanced species overtakes it. Far from placing humanity alone in the Universe, the prospect of humanity being an early arrival suggests that are plenty of GCs out there, as well as ones that have not yet reached an advanced stage of development.

“If alien civilizations randomly appear that then expand out to remake the universe, then once all of the Universe is filled with such aliens, there aren’t any places left for life to evolve toward our level,” Hanson added. “That is, ‘grabby aliens’ create a deadline by which advanced life must appear. This deadline is within a few billion years from now. Relative to that deadline, we are not early.”

PARAMETER 3: GOING LOUD!

The final parameter (k) is based on the assumption that the time and space we occupy are representative of the norm (as noted already, the Copernican Hypothesis). According to the GC model, this is the result of a selection effect whereby advanced alien life will eventually expand to fill up the Universe. This raises the final aspect that Hanson and his team considered, which is how less-developed civilizations make the transition to become GCs — aka. go from being “quiet” to being “loud.”

Loud civilizations are so-called because they increase their volume (of space), change their volumes’ appearances (show signs of activity produce technosignatures). Quiet civilizations are those that do not increase their volumes or alter them, which effectively describes our current level of development. Given time, quiet civilizations (if they survive) will advance to the point that they too will become loud, provided they do so before the deadline passes.

With these parameters defined, Hanson and his colleagues simulated how variations in the expansion speed of GCs (s) and the time it takes for life to evolve (n) would yield different results on how many GCs were currently active in our Universe, how much of it they had come to occupy, and (as a result) when we might encounter a GC. These variables were visualized in terms of 1D and 2D diagrams (shown above) and a 3D animation (shown below).

The s parameter is especially significant since faster-expanding aliens would be more difficult to detect before they reached our doorstep. Due to the speed of light, any activity in an occupied volume of space would take thousands of years to reach us. If a GC is expanding rapidly enough, the light they generated when they first began expanding will not arrive before they do. As Hanson put it:

“At the origin date of a random civilization, about half of the universe is filled with very big visible alien civilizations. If these grew very slowly, then the sky would be full of them, huge circles in the sky, far bigger than the full moon. However, if they grew at the speed of light, then we wouldn’t see them until they got here.

“If they grew very fast, such as at over half of the speed of light, then most of the places that could see them would be places where they had arrived and colonized and changed. That is, if we could see them, then they would likely be here instead of us. In which case, we would not exist.”

ALIENS: WHEN DO WE MEET THEM?

Ultimately, the results Hans and his team obtained indicated the following range of possibilities:

• GCs (or “loud” civilizations) emerge from quiet ones at a rate of about once per million galaxies
• They expand and increase their volume at about half the speed of light
• They currently control 40-50 percent of the Universe’s volume
• Each GC will eventually control 10⁵ – 3 x 10⁷ (100,000 to 30 million) galaxies

Last but certainly not least, they estimated that humanity is likely to encounter the nearest GC roughly 200 million to two billion years from now. In the meantime, their modeling also indicates that the odds of humanity detecting signs of technological activity (aka. “technosignatures”) are very low. As Hanson explained, this could be bad for those engaged in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI).

“Once per million galaxies is very rare, and if grabby aliens were the only kinds to see, then the chances for SETI to see any aliens nearby would be very low,” he said. “However, it may be that there are many times more ‘quiet’ alien civilizations out there. The higher the ratio of quiet to grabby aliens civilizations, the closer might be the nearest quiet aliens to be found.”

Conversely, the fewer quiet civilizations out there (relative to GCs) right now, the higher our future chances of becoming a GC ourselves. Alas, this prospect also lowers the odds of us detecting and observing alien civilizations in our galaxy. In fact, the model Hanson and his colleagues created predicts that the “quiet-to-grabby ratio” needs to be over 10,000 to 1 for us to realistically expect that even one quiet civilization has ever been active in the history of our galaxy (ca. 13.5 billion years).

That ratio needs to be as high as 10 million to one for us to expect that any alien civilizations with a million-year lifetime are active right now in our galaxy. While none of these outcomes are particularly encouraging for SETI researchers, the research team notes that it’s possible that the volumes of space occupied by GCs are more subtle in appearance and that their expansion speed is slower. In this case, they estimate that we can predict there being signs in the night sky.

Another positive takeaway from this research is the fact that this sort of modeling is now possible. Whereas early SETI efforts were guided by conjectures that were subject to a lot of uncertainty (like the Drake Equation), we now have enough data on the types of stars and exoplanets in our Universe that we can make educated inferences.

“It’s exciting that we’re here now,” said Hanson. “We’re no longer speculating about aliens; we are reasonably sure they exist, and we can say where they are in spacetime. We have a simple statistical model that says where they are, what they are doing, and where we might see or meet them.”

If a spaceship from another planet crashed on Earth and the craft and bodies of an alien species brought to a secret military base, wouldn’t you think the greatest scientist in the world would want to analyze them? A UFO investigator has pulled together the pieces of such a story involving Albert Einstein, his young assistant and their trip to Roswell, New Mexico, after the famous UFO incident in 1947. Did Einstein choose Shirley Wright to accompany him to Roswell in the summer of 1947 to witness a “disc-shaped” craft and five small bodies that were “gray with a slight greenish tinge”? If it really happened, why did Einstein never tell anyone, why did Wright not reveal this until 1993, and why has it not come to light until now?

“She was a dedicated teacher and scientist, earning PhDs in Physical Chemistry and Physical Science. She was a chemistry professor at MDCC for over 50 years. She was a student of Dr. Albert Einstein at Princeton.”

The 2015 obituary of Shirley Wright gives a synopsis of her 85-year life, including her connection to Albert Einstein. A new article on the UFO Explorations website by longtime UFO researcher Anthony ‘Tony’ Bragalia goes back to Wright’s first contact with Einstein and what happened next through an audio interview with MUFON researcher Sheila Franklin in 1993. According to Bragalia’s article, UFO researcher Leonard Stringfield assigned Franklin to find and meet with “Edith Simpson” – the pseudonym Stringfield had given Wright in a research article to protect her identity. Franklin not only found Wright but convinced her to sit for a recorded interview. Part of that interview can be heard here – unfortunately, Franklin could not find the second half of the interview.

In the interview with Franklin, Wright explains she was at a military conference with Einstein in Chicago he took her in a small plane to the base, where they were taken to a hangar.

“It was disc-shaped, sort of concave. Its size stood up to one fourth of the hangar.”

“The body of the ship was what I would call today a rather reflective material but when you got up close to it, it was rather dull.”

She says Einstein believed they were seeing an extraterrestrial craft. And then they saw what had allegedly been taken from inside it – five alike five-foot-tall corpses “dressed in tight-fitting suits” which she heard “had no navels or genitalia.” They were then taken to another isolated building where she claims they saw one being that was still alive – apparently gurgling in pain. According to the article, she told Franklin she later heard the creature had survived.

“I was just told to keep my mouth shut.”

Wright said Einstein had written a report on what they saw, but she did not have the clearance to see it and merely ordered to keep the entire event a secret. Franklin told Bragalia she tried to confirm it but found nothing specific. Bragalia doesn’t say why Franklin decided to share this story with him – merely to reveal that she provided Stringfield’s privately published “Status Report – UFO Crash Retrievals” monograph series where he referred to Wright as “Edith Simpson”. She also provided her notes from the interview, her subsequent memories and the recordings.

What can we make of Anthony Bragalia’s story of the alleged Roswell spacecraft and alien encounters of Albert Einstein as told by his student assistant, Shirley Wright? If you’ve got extraterrestrials in your possession, who better to study them than the greatest scientific mind of the time? However, from the account, it doesn’t sound like Einstein spent much time analyzing them or the alleged craft. And why would Einstein take a student assistant into the hangar and the rooms with him – especially one without security clearance? Einstein and Wright are no longer with us. No paper trail, no physical evidence and no other testimonials seem to have been found by Franklin or Bragalia, seasoned UFO researchers. No other accounts of this alleged event come up under searches. Why would Wright decide to open up to Franklin under her own name or Springfield under an alias – especially if she’d been told to “keep my mouth shut”?

Bragalia also gives examples of when Einstein expressed a belief in the existence of other life forms, but seemed to stick to variations of “no comment” when pushed on any personal experience he may have had. Bragalia sees this as proof that “he was there and sworn to say nothing about it to anyone ever.”

This writer thinks it’s an interesting unproven story worthy of further investigation. If Roswell was a real alien event, who better than Albert Einstein should be brought in to see it?

Some people seem to have strange UFO phenomena gravitate towards them for whatever reasons. Our case here begins in September of 1961, when an unassuming housewife named Stella Lansing was driving along near her home in Northampton, Massachusetts. As she drove along, she was pulled from her thoughts by something in the sky, which appeared to be a brightly lit orb that was eerily hovering over the trees some distance away. As she stared on trying to figure out what it was, it then sped towards her car and hovered nearby for a moment before daring off out of sight into the night sky. It was all baffling to Stella, and at the time she would keep the bizarre experience to herself. However, this was to prove to be just the beginning of what would go on to become a lifetime of strange events, covering tales of UFOs, aliens, and the sinister Men in Black.

Several years later, in 1964, Stella would see the same object again, this time following her car as she drove along. As it did so, she would claim that she then noticed a large, black sedan also following her, and that the orb seemed to be moving in unison with it. The black car then pulled up alongside her, but she could not peer past the inscrutable dark windows. This was all very unsettling, and she was relieved when the black car suddenly pulled over to the side of the road and the orb shot off over some fields. In the meantime, the black sedan rolled off the side of the road and Stella got the impression that whoever was behind the wheel was watching the orb disappear into the distance. Over the next couple of years, she would see this orb of light more frequently, and she had the distinct feeling that it was keeping an eye on her. So far, so creepy, but it would get even weirder still.

On Halloween night, 1966, Stella had her car parked at a lakeside not far from her home, just out there enjoying a moment of peace and quiet. As she looked out over the lake, she then saw something emerge from beneath the water, which to her looked like ahead wearing a “black skullcap.” Whatever it was appeared to be peeking just above the water’s surface, and she felt that it was staring intently at her. Such a strange sight out there on this otherwise quiet evening hit her with a jolt of terror, and she started to back her car away even as the thing below the waves began to emerge from the water. She turned on her brights to see that it was a humanoid creature of some sort, and the sudden brightness seemed to startle it, causing it to run off towards some trees. She then saw an orb of light about the size of a basketball shoot up from behind the trees, which was then followed by a larger orb that flew out low across the water at high speed. Apparently, a few of her neighbors would also see this spectacle of strange lights, as her home was only about 60 yards away from the lake.

Seeing as how these phenomena seemed to be following her around, Stella invested in an 8mm camera in order to try to catch photographic evidence of these strange incidents, and she would not have to wit long to get her chance. On February 18, 1967, she saw the strange lights again, a smaller orb and larger one, one yellow and the other red,  and this time she stopped her car and got out for a better look. There was another motorist who had done the same, and they both watched as yet two other large orbs joined the first two, after which they began doing an aerial display of acrobatics. This time she had her camera with her, and allegedly managed to get plenty of footage of them. As all of this was going on, even more motorists had gathered to watch the spectacle, including a friend of Stella’s on her way home from work. The lights then flew off, to be replaced by a huge, bluish-white light that approached them as Stell continued to film. It would hover nearby before flying off into the night as well to leave all present gasping in astonishment. Unfortunately, it would later turn out that much of the film she had taken had not been correctly spliced, but most of it remained intact, and under analysis there could be seen four humanoid figures sitting in the large, blueish white object, which she had not noticed while actually filming.

Stella would then come into contact with a psychiatrist and paranormal researcher by the name of Berthold Eric Schwarz. He was no crackpot, having been certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and he was also a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, as well as having authored numerous scholarly or scientific articles, many focusing on psychiatric, psychoanalytic and electrophysiological subjects. He was also quite into studying UFOs, psychic powers, and the paranormal, and became interested in Stella’s case and the footage she claimed to have taken of the UFOs and their occupants after meeting her at a UFO conference.

Schwarz would subject Stella to a battery of physical and neurological examinations, after which he arranged psychiatric sessions for her. During these sessions, she would make all sorts of claims that she had not made to anyone before, such as that she was in telepathic contact with aliens and demons, that she had exhibited physical symptoms such as paralysis and lesions on her skin. It would turn out that she had voluntarily checked herself into a psychiatric hospital, where she was diagnosed as being a possible Paranoid Schizophrenic. She would be kept for observation for 10 days before being released on her own cognizance. The thing was, Schwarz did not believe that this psychosis had been causing her experiences, but rather the other ways around, that the strange incidents had taken a mental toll on her. He would then turn his attention to the reams of footage she had taken of the phenomena, which he deemed to be very credible. Schwartz decided to go out to an area where she claimed that most of her sightings had taken place, along with a friend of hers, and there he would see a UFO for himself, this one taking the form of a “flaming disc.” Even weirder was that they would observe a black car suddenly appear to shine headlights at them. Schwarz would say of what happened:

While Mrs. Lansing and I were filming these strange lights, an automobile suddenly seemed to appear out of nowhere. It stopped approximately one to two hundred feet ahead of our car. We were shocked to see its headlights illuminate our dark area and flicker alternatively left and right and vice versa, in a manner reminiscent of semaphore signals, and then dim out to a pink, and then come on again. At the height of the excitement, the lady friend panicked, and screamed for us to get back into the car, which we did. Fortunately, I photographed most of this bizarre incident, and for several film frames the flaming disc can be seen gliding ion the background, above and then just over the glaring headlights. The latter part of the event was filmed from the interior of Mrs. Lansing’s car, and showed reflections from the windshield. The mystery car then suddenly turned up its lights, started its engine, and barreled past us at great speed. Because of the blinding headlights, we couldn’t make out the license plate, but the auto seemed to be a rather large, General Motors model of several years ago. The mystery car was noisy, and sounded as if its muffler was defective. It was impossible to see if there were any occupants in the car. Mrs. Lansing, her friend, and I were completely surprised by this weird incident.

What was going on here? Whatever it was, it proved to Schwarz that Stella was not hallucinating and that something very bizarre and unexplainable was going on, and he would write a whole paper on the case. Stella’s various photographs and films taken over the years, all taken on different types of cameras with different types of films, were picked apart and debated, with many suggesting that it was all merely camera glitches or a hoax, but Schwarz insisted that there was no trickery involved, and that he had seen the objects for himself. The case picked up a lot of momentum years later, when in 1991 it featured on the TV show Sightings, which showed portions of the footage and managed to even turn up evidence of voices coming from the occupants within the craft, generating renewed interest in the case. Sadly, Stella Lansing would pass away in 2012, taking any secrets she had to the grave with her. What was going on and what was this phenomenon all about? Why were these forces tormenting her and what was the meaning of the Men in Black angle? It remains an odd and unsolved case of a very strange individual surrounded by mysteries we may never full unfurl, and has gone on to be one of the weirder cases of supposed alien contactees.

Researchers have claimed that Mars was hit by catastrophic floods more often than previously estimated. These massive floods overflowed Martian lakes and could have possibly created many of the valleys on the Red Planet.

It has been previously reported that overflowing water from more than 200 lakes may have potentially created canyons and helped shape the surface of the planet between 3.7 and 3.5 billion years ago. However, new research has suggested that since there are so many craters on Mars, perhaps there were many more massive floods than previously thought.

In an interview with Space.com, Timothy Goudge, who is a planetary scientist at the University of Texas at Austin and the lead author of the study, went into further details, “The surface of Mars is covered in impact craters that act as perfect basins to pond and store water in.” He and his colleagues focused primarily on valley networks that formed when there was the most river activity on Mars. They analyzed valleys that were connected to lake basins with a specific focus on canyons that had floors that were higher up than those of lake basins and were probably created when the lakes overflowed with water.

The researchers then calculated that the overflowed lakes would have carved out about 13,675 cubic miles (57,000 cubic kilometers) of volume – approximately 24% of the valley volume on the Red Planet. To put this into better perspective, that is over ten times the volume of Lake Michigan.

Furthermore, the valley systems that were created by overflowing crater lakes only make up 3% of the valley lengths that were formed by water. They are, however, significantly deeper than the other river valleys. While crater flood valleys have a median depth of 170.5 meters (559 feet), the median depth of the gradual valleys measure 77.5 meters (254 feet).

This research will certainly help experts in determining how the surface of Mars changed throughout the years as Goudge stated, “For example, since the catastrophically formed lake outlet canyons are so much deeper, they would have influenced the longer-lived river valleys on the surrounding terrain, with the former acting as new conduits for the flow of water,” adding, “This is just one example of why catastrophic lake-breach flooding really needs to be considered more consistently as we look to understand the evolution of Martian river valleys.”

As for what comes next, Goudge and his colleagues hope to find out even more information regarding these massive floods such as the time frame in which they occurred, “For example, when we say these canyons were rapidly carved, we often get asked, ‘How fast is rapid?’” “For this present study, all we can say is that it was geologically rapidly, where the difference between three days and three months or even three years is essentially negligible compared to tens or hundreds of thousands of years.”

But the big question still remains – was there ever life on the Red Planet? The study was published in the journal Nature where it can be read in full.

If the US military has learned anything from the videos of the Tic Tac UFOs, it might be that when the cat is out of the bag, it’s best to acknowledge it rather than deny the feline, the bag, and the person who left it open exist and instead direct attention to the dog chasing a squirrel across the street. Yet that is close to what is happening at the Skunk Works – the super-secretive aircraft lab responsible for the U-2, SR-71 Blackbird, F-117 Nighthawk and other highest-tech planes that is ostensibly owned by defense contractor Lockheed Martin but is in reality controlled by the US Air Force and the Pentagon. A video leaked recently showing what looks like a cross between a stealth plane and a flying saucer at the Skunk Works and both parties are having no part in explaining what it is. So … what IS it?

The TikTok video was discovered by Ruben Hofs, who posted it on Twitter (see the video and screen shots here) and brought it to the attention of the media and military analysts like The War Zone, which then put both Lockheed Martin and the Pentagon on the spot.

The War Zone confirmed Hofs’ speculation that the video was taken at the Helendale radar-cross section (RCS) measurement facility – a site in the Mojave Desert near the Skunk Works headquarters at Plant 42 in Palmdale, California, used for measuring the radar reflectivity of stealth aircraft. The War Zone notes this is a high security site, yet someone openly took a cellphone video which picked up an expletive of shock – both unexpected in such a secure location. The War Zone determined that the ‘thing’ was being transported upside down and it resembled other next-generation planes, but was unable to discern if this was full-sized or a scale model.

The War Zone reports that in an interview with Jeff Babione, the Skunk Works’ Vice President and General Manager (a Lockheed employee) by Defense One’s Marcus Weisgerber, refused to answer any questions due to security. In a separate interview with Air Force Chief of Staff General Charles Q. Brown by Defense One’s Tara Copp, the general said he was “not aware of that particular photo” and also refused to comment. In both interviews, those ‘no comment’ responses lead one to suspect that this was a highly secret test, or it was a massive breach of security … or both.

The War Zone notes that Lockheed Martin claims “85 percent of what Skunk Works does is classified.” Was this video of something in the non-classified 15%? Another military website, The Aviationist, could not identify the object either. Yet no one knows why Lockheed nor the Pentagon would say anything about it. The Pentagon at least admitted that the Tic Tac UAPs were real. Why not this object?

A chamber has been found by researchers who were excavating a cave network on the Rock of Gibraltar. The chamber was discovered in Vanguard Cave which is a part of the Gorham’s Cave complex and it was inhabited by Neanderthals for approximately 100,000 years. Furthermore, it has been closed off for about 40,000 years – until now.

While examining the cave, the team found a gap in the sediment so they widened it out and went inside where they discovered a 13-meter space located in the roof. They noticed broken rocks as well as stalactites coming down from the ceiling which indicated that there was an earthquake many years ago.

Inside of the chamber was a leg bone belonging to a lynx, large wing bone from a griffon vulture, a vertebrae from a spotted hyena, and a big dog whelk shell. Interestingly, there weren’t any marks on the animal bones to indicate that humans were involved in their deaths.

Additionally, the researchers noticed about half a dozen claw marks. In an interview with The Guardian, Professor Clive Finlayson, who is an evolutionary biologist and the director of the Gibraltar National Museum, explained the marks in further detail, “Something dragged things into there a long time ago,” adding, “…You’d normally associate that kind of claw mark with bears – and we do have bear remains in the cave, but they look a bit small to me. I wonder whether that lynx whose femur we found was actually scratching on the walls.”

The animals probably didn’t end up there on their own as stated by Professor Finlayson, “That bit of the cave is probably 20 metres above sea level today, so clearly somebody took it up there some time before 40,000 years ago.” “That’s already a hint that people have been up there.”

Other items associated with Neanderthals were found in different parts of the caves which include stone tools and hearths as well as more animal remains belonging to ibex, red deer, dolphins, and seals. Even a milk tooth belonging to a 4-year-old Neanderthal child was found four years ago, but it is believed that he or she was killed by hyenas and brought back to the cave.

As for what is next, Professor Finlayson said that future excavations are being planned for the caves to hopefully find more information regarding the Neanderthals, “One of the things that we’ve found on many levels of this cave is clear evidence of occupation – campfires and so on.” “I’m speculating now, but what we haven’t found is where they buried their own. Since we’re speculating, a chamber at the back of a cave could be quite suggestive – it’s total speculation, but you’re not going to bury people in your kitchen or in your living room.”

Since they inhabited the cave for about 100,000 years, the excavations will hopefully provide more items and information regarding the lives of Neanderthals. A picture of the cave can be seen here.
