De lucht bevat zones waar stralingsniveaus zo hoog zijn dat de straling mogelijk de gezondheid van vliegtuiginzittenden aantast. Dat publiceert een door de NASA opgezet onderzoeksteam in vakblad Space Weather. De onderzoekers stellen dat vliegtuigen deze zones in de toekomst moeten vermijden om elk gezondheidsrisico te minimaliseren.
Het was al bekend dat vliegen op grote hoogte ons blootstelt aan kosmische straling. De stralingsdosis op een vlucht van Amsterdam naar Tokio komt ongeveer overeen met die van een röntgenfoto van de borstkas.

Vliegtuigen met onderzoeksapparatuur hebben nu aangetoond dat er luchtzones zijn waarin het stralingsniveau meer dan twee keer zo hoog is als gemiddeld. Het onderzoek werd verricht in het kader van het ARMAS-programma van de Amerikaanse lucht- en ruimtevaartorganisatie NASA. Dit programma is gericht op de ontwikkeling van nieuwe methoden om de hoeveelheid straling op grote hoogten te meten.
Gedurende de 265 onderzoeksvluchten hielden de stralingsniveaus zich over het algemeen aan het verwachte patroon. Bij zes vluchten vertoonden de niveaus echter plotseling een enorme piek, alsof de vliegtuigen dwars door een wolk van straling vlogen.
Geomagnetische stormen
‘We hebben meerdere gevallen waargenomen waarbij de blootstelling verdubbelde tijdens het vliegen door zo’n ‘wolk’’, zegt ARMAS-hoofdonderzoeker W. Kent Tobiska. In sommige gevallen werden zelfs nog hogere waarden gemeten. Die resultaten zijn echter niet in de publicatie meegenomen, omdat de onderzoekers eerst alternatieve verklaringen voor deze extreme waarden willen uitsluiten.
De pieken traden tegelijk op met geomagnetische stormen. Dat plaatst hoogenergetische elektronen afkomstig van zonnewind in de rol van verdachte. Deze elektronen worden door het aardmagnetisch veld gevangen gehouden in de buitenste vanallengordel.
Volgens Tobiska kan een geomagnetische storm de hoogenergetische elektronen uit hun benarde positie bevrijden. ‘Deze elektronen worden dan de bovenste lagen van de atmosfeer in gedreven. Daar botsen ze met stikstof- en zuurstofatomen en -moleculen. Dat veroorzaakt een fontein van secundaire en tertiaire straling, waarschijnlijk in de vorm van gammastraling.’ Deze gammastraling is volgens Tobiska wat de ARMAS-vluchten op verschillende plekken maten.
Zwangerschap
Momenteel zijn er geen vaste standaarden voor stralingsveiligheid in de luchtvaart. Tobiska denkt dat dit de komende jaren zal veranderen. Het absolute risico is weliswaar laag – een röntgenscan van de borstkas verhoogt de kans op dodelijke kanker met slechts 0,0005 procent – maar volgens de onderzoeker moet dit worden afgewogen tegen het grote aantal vluchten en de mogelijkheid het risico te vermijden.
‘Het betreft vooral bemanningsleden,’ zegt Tobiska. ‘Maatregelen zouden echter zeker ook frequent flyers en zelfs foetussen tijdens het eerste trimester van de zwangerschap begunstigen.’
ARMAS werkt aan een methode om de stralingswolken via satellietgegevens en sensoren in de lucht te traceren. Daarmee kunnen vliegtuigen worden aangezet tot een andere koers om de gevaarlijke zones te vermijden.
Hoewel fysici al jaren tevergeefs zoeken, is er geen enkele reden om te twijfelen aan het bestaan van donkeremateriedeeltjes. Onderzoekers van de Radboud Universiteit stellen in een nieuw artikel op de voorpublicatiesite Arxiv dat supersymmetrie nog altijd een keurige verklaring biedt voor het bestaan van het mysterieuze spul.

Dat nog niemand donkeremateriedeeltjes heeft gevonden, betekent niet dat ze niet bestaan, stelt een groep deeltjesfysici van onder andere de Radboud Universiteit in Nijmegen. De fysici ontwikkelden een analysemethode die een bijna afgeschreven, maar elegante oplossing voor donkere materie, supersymmetrie (SUSY), nog eens tegen het licht hield. En wat bleek? De huidige detectoren zijn nog niet gevoelig genoeg om dit theoretische model te kunnen testen. Het is dus niet zo gek dat er niets gevonden is, vinden zij.
Daarmee blijft supersymmetrie overeind als mogelijke verklaring voor het raadsel van donkere materie. Maar liefst 85 procent van de materie in ons heelal lijkt te ontbreken. Het effect van de zwaartekracht van die ontbrekende massa is duidelijk te zien, maar de deeltjes waaruit die materie bestaat zijn nog nooit waargenomen. Al decennia lang wordt tevergeefs gezocht naar deze donkere materie. Het is dus niet gek dat sommige mensen op zoek gaan naar andere verklaringen. Theoretisch fysicus Erik Verlinde sprong hier eind vorig jaar bijvoorbeeld handig op in door een nieuwe verklaring te geven voor de zwaartekracht, zodat donkere materie niet langer nodig is om het raadsel van de missende massa op te lossen.
Vergeten modellen keren terug
Volgens de fysici is een dergelijke drastische aanpak echter niet nodig. Het oude idee van supersymmetrie voldoet nog altijd. ‘De allereerste SUSY-modellen zijn bijna helemaal uitgesloten’, zegt deeltjesfysicus Melissa van Beekveld van de Radboud Universiteit die bij het onderzoek betrokken is. ‘Daardoor denken veel mensen dat SUSY donkere materie niet kan verklaren. Maar die eerste modellen zijn te beperkt.’ Toen die modellen ontwikkeld werden, deden fysici allerlei aannames, omdat de computerkracht ontbrak om alle mogelijkheden te berekenen. Nu de onderzoekers toegang hebben tot betere computers kunnen zij uitgebreider uitzoeken of de meest populaire subcategorie van de supersymmetrie modellen, genaamd ‘natuurlijke’ SUSY-modellen donkere materie kunnen verklaren.
Uit de analyses van de onderzoekers kwam een elegant SUSY-model naar voren dat een specifiek supersymmetrisch deeltje als beste kandidaat voor donkere materie aanwees. De eigenschappen van dit deeltje komen verrassend goed overeen met hints uit onafhankelijke metingen van onder andere het AMS-02 experiment, dat gemonteerd is aan het internationale ruimtestation ISS, en de Fermi Gamma-Ray Telescoop, die in een baan om de aarde draait. Beide zoeken indirect naar donkere materie.
De fysici stellen bovendien dat het op dit moment bij dat soort indirecte hints zal blijven. Uit hun berekeningen blijkt namelijk dat de huidige experimenten onvoldoende gevoelig zijn voor een directe meting.
Het is, met andere woorden, niet zo verrassend dat nog niemand een dergelijk deeltje heeft gezien. ‘We hebben aangetoond dat er geen problemen zijn met SUSY’, zegt deeltjesfysicus Sascha Caron van de Radboud Universiteit. ‘SUSY werkt nog steeds fantastisch en geeft je precies het donkeremateriedeeltje dat je wilt.’
Onwaarschijnlijke massa
SUSY-modellen zijn uitbreidingen op het standaardmodel van de deeltjesfysica, dat alle bekende deeltjes en hun onderlinge interacties beschrijft. Ze werden bedacht in de tweede helft van de twintigste eeuw en probeerden een simpele en elegante verklaring te geven voor donkere materie. Bovendien geven ze een verklaring voor de gemeten massa van het higgsdeeltje, die onwaarschijnlijk laag bleek. ‘De kans dat het higgsdeeltje deze massa heeft, is te vergelijken met de kans dat je vijf keer achter elkaar de Staatslotterij wint ’, zegt Van Beekveld. Daar worden natuurkundigen een beetje ongemakkelijk van. De natuurlijke SUSY-modellen geven echter een verklaring voor deze opmerkelijk lage massa, een extra reden waarom veel fysici hopen dat het SUSY-idee uiteindelijk in metingen zal worden bevestigd.
Donkere materie optimisme
Het Xenon1T experiment speurt naar donkere materie in het ondergrondse lab Gran Sasso in Italië
De bevestiging waar fysici naar zoeken is de vondst van een SUSY-deeltje in een van hun experimenten – iets dat binnenkort al mogelijk is. ‘Als donkere materie bestaat uit de deeltjes die natuurlijke SUSY-modellen voorspellen, dan zal het in de komende jaren gevonden worden door Xenon1T’, zegt Caron. Xenon1T is een experiment in Gran Sasso dat net begonnen is met meten. Ook de ATLAS-detector van de deeltjesversneller LHC gaat naar zo’n donkeremateriekandidaat zoeken. ‘De eerste studies van ATLAS kunnen we al over een paar maanden verwachten’, zegt Van Beekveld.
Theoretisch fysicus Christopher McCabe van GRAPPA (GRavitation AstroParticle Physics Amsterdam), die niet bij het onderzoek betrokken was, is niet verrast door de resultaten. ‘Maar de methode die ze ervoor gebruiken is slim bedacht’. McCabe is naar eigen zeggen ‘heel optimistisch’ over het bestaan van een SUSY-deeltje dat donkere materie verklaart. ‘Met name omdat er geweldige experimenten zijn, zoals Xenon1T en de LHC, die dit kunnen testen. Pas als er over tien jaar nog niets gevonden is, word ik pessimistischer.’

Rene Heller van het Max Planck Institute voor zonnestelselonderzoek bedacht samen met de onafhankelijke ruimteonderzoeker Michael Hippke een nieuw antwoord. We kunnen een schip met zonnezeil ook afremmen met behulp van sterrenkracht.
Ons buurstersysteem, Alpha Centauri, is meer dan vier lichtjaar bij ons vandaan. Technologieën op basis van chemische voortstuwing wegen teveel om dit soort enorme afstanden te overbruggen. Ze zouden er ongeveer 100.000 jaar over doen om Alpha Centauri te bereiken.
Grafeen
Een andere optie is daarom handiger. Wanneer je met een laser vanaf de aarde op een ultralicht zonnezeil gemaakt van grafeen schiet, kun je dat schip binnen een paar minuten al versnellen tot twintig procent van de lichtsnelheid. Dat betekent dat een interstellaire sonde het Alpha-Centauri-systeem, en de daarin aanwezige aarde-achtige exoplaneet Proxima b, al 20 jaar na de lancering kan bereiken.
Vorig jaar maakte miljardair Yuri Millner nog 100 miljoen dollar vrij om een project van de grond te krijgen dat kleine satellietjes naar het systeem te sturen en de eventuele bewoners van dichtbij te bekijken.

Genieten van het uitzicht
Helaas zal een ruimteschip op een dergelijke snelheid binnen een paar uur voorbij het stersysteem schieten. ‘Dat is nauwelijks voldoende om van het uitzicht te genieten, laat staan om serieuze wetenschap over de bewoonbaarheid van een planeet te doen’, zegt Heller.
Om af te remmen, zou het ruimteschip brandstof en een remraket kunnen meenemen. En je zou het zonnezeil ook nog met lasertechnologie in z’n achteruit kunnen zetten. Maar dergelijke opties wegen wel veel, en zouden ook nog eens onderweg stuk kunnen gaan.
Daarom stellen Hippke en Heller nu een andere optie voor, waarbij ze de zwaartekracht van de sterren waar ze langs vliegen combineren met de stralingsdruk van de fotonen die ze uitzenden. Op die manier kunnen zij het ruimteschip in een stabiele baan rond een van de sterren krijgen. Stralingsdruk kan vervolgens gebruikt worden om het schip naar een baan rond Proxima b te tillen, die draait in de leefbare zone om de ster Proxima Centauri.
Gewicht beperken
Dat idee is volgens Avi Loeb van Harvard University ‘wetenschappelijk mogelijk en heel interessant’. Zijn grootste zorg is praktisch. ‘Je moet onthouden dat een zonnezeil wel elektronica nodig heeft, en die elektronica weegt ook wat’, zegt hij.
Om het gewicht tot een minimum te beperken, mag het zeil maar een paar atomen dik zijn. Dat betekent dat het verschillende ordegroottes dunner is dan de golflengtes van het licht dat het wil weerkaatsen. Daardoor zou het zonnezeil niet heel weerspiegelend zijn – een probleem, omdat het zeilschip zijn vaart juist krijgt vanwege het weerkaatsen van de fotonen die erop vallen. ‘Het lijkt niet mogelijk om het gewicht te beperken en toch een stevig en weerspiegelend zeil te maken’, zegt Loeb.
Hippke geeft toe dat dat een probleem is, maar hij ziet wel oplossingen. Een laagje siliconen van een atoom dik zou de spiegelkracht van het zonnezeil volgens hem enorm vergroten, en juist dat soort typen materialen worden op dit moment door ingenieurs ontwikkeld.

Titled Mainbrace, the exercise utilized the armed forces of the UK, the United States, Norway, Canada, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, and Belgium. No less than 85,000 military personnel took part in the operation, the purpose of which was to demonstrate to the former Soviet Union that NATO was fully prepared to withstand, and counter, any possible Soviet attack on western Europe.
Barely one day into the exercise, at least two reports of UFO encounters were filed with authorities by naval personnel on board ships in the Atlantic, between Ireland and Iceland. The first such encounter involved a “blue/green triangle,” which was observed flying over the sea at a speed estimated to be around 1,500 mph. Later that same day, three unidentified objects, travelling at around the same speed, were seen flying in a triangular formation. All three craft reportedly emitted a “white light exhaust.”
As part of the British Royal Air Force’s involvement in Mainbrace, 269 Squadron – which was based at RAF Ballykelly, Ireland – was posted to RAF Topcliffe, Yorkshire, England. It was at Topcliffe, on September 19, 1952, that one of the most historically important UFO sightings was reported by serving members of the RAF. A September 20, 1952 document written and signed by Flight Lieutenant Dolphin of RAF Topcliffe – and sent to Headquarters, No. 18 Group – states: “In accordance with your instructions, herewith a report on the unidentified object which was seen over the station earlier today.”
The report referred to by Dolphin was prepared by one of the main witnesses, Flight Lieutenant John Kilburn, who revealed the following:
“Sir, I have the honour to report the following incident which I witnessed on Friday, 19th September, 1952. I was standing with four other aircrew personnel of No. 269 Squadron watching a Meteor fighter gradually descending. The Meteor was at approximately 5000 feet and approaching from the east. [Flight Officer R.N.] Paris suddenly noticed a white object in the sky at a height between ten and twenty thousand feet some five miles astern of the Meteor.”
Kilburn continued: “The object was silver in colour and circular in shape, it appeared to be travelling at a much slower speed than the Meteor but was on a similar course. It maintained the slow forward speed for a few seconds before commencing to descend, swinging in a pendular motion during descent similar to a falling sycamore leaf…After a few seconds, the object stopped its pendulous motion and its descent and began to rotate about its own axis.”
Then, Kilburn noted, something amazing happened: “Suddenly it accelerated at an incredible speed towards the west turning onto a south-easterly heading before disappearing. All this occurred in a matter of fifteen to twenty seconds. The movements of the object were not identifiable with anything I have seen in the air and the rate of acceleration was unbelievable.”
As well as the documentation filed by Kilburn (which was supported by the testimony of five of his colleagues), a number of reports from members of the public reached RAF Topcliffe too, all of which were received by Group Captain J.A.C. Stratton and forwarded to the Air Ministry at Whitehall, London for scrutiny.
The major American presence in Mainbrace was the huge aircraft carrier, the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. On September 20 (just one day after the incident at RAF Topcliffe), an American press-photographer, named Wallace Litwin, was on board the Roosevelt to photograph U.S. planes taking to the skies from the aircraft carrier.
It was while securing the pictures that Litwin sighted a circular, silver object maneuvering above the American fleet. Litwin, who was shooting with color film, managed to obtain three photos of the UFO. Significantly, all the photos had the Roosevelt in shot – something that gave the pictures depth of field and assisted in determining the size of the UFO, which, according to Litwin’s report, was considerable.
Twenty-four hours later, a similar object was seen over the North Sea. Again, it was silver in color and circular in shape. On that occasion, an interception was attempted by a number of RAF fighter aircraft engaged in the exercise. The UFO easily outdistanced itself from the planes.
Then there is the testimony of William Maguire, formerly of the RAF. During Mainbrace he was posted to RAF Sandwich, Kent, England where something seriously strange was going down. In Maguire’s own words…
“My memory was that everything was in a complete flap. Normally, in a military situation everything is ordered, regular and set out. But here was a situation that was plainly out of control. Mechanics were flying about all over the place.”
As Maguire got his bearings, and the situation was revealed to him in its starkest form, the reasons behind the blind panic became staggeringly clear: a huge, unidentified aerial object was being tracked on the radar-scopes high over the English Channel: “The mechanics were being blamed for not calibrating the instruments properly; we were being blamed for not interpreting the readings correctly. Every single instrument on the base was showing this enormous object sitting up at an unbelievable height. It was the size of a warship and it just stood there.”
Now we move on to the world of the CIA: as part of their monitoring of foreign press agencies, the CIA obtained a copy of a Norwegian newspaper clipping concerning an incident that had occurred on September 18. Published in a Harstad, Norway newspaper, a CIA translation of the article reads as follows:
“On 18 September, at 1400 hours, three forestry workers who were working right outside Kirknes, noticed a flat, round object hovering motionless at about 500 meters altitude. The object appeared to have a diameter of 15-20 meters. After the workers had observed the object for a while, it suddenly flew away at great speed in a northwesterly direction. It appears that only these workers saw the object; they swear, however, that their report is true.”
It must be said that the characteristics displayed by the UFO were very similar to those described at RAF Topcliffe just one day later.
And we’re still not done with Mainbrace. In his book The Report on Unidentified Flying Objects, Edward J. Ruppelt – former head of the U.S. Air Force’s Project Blue Book – revealed that a British Royal Air Force intelligence officer, on an exchange visit to the Pentagon, admitted it was the Mainbrace sightings that led the British Government to officially recognize the UFO.
Curiously, Ruppelt also stated in his book that prior to the commencement of the NATO exercise, it had been suggested by someone in the Pentagon that Naval Intelligence should “keep an eye open for UFOs” during Mainbrace.
Why someone might have had advance notice that UFOs were likely to turn up during Mainbrace remains a mystery to this day. Unless, of course, NATO knows better…

On September 20 (just one day after the incident at RAF Topcliffe), an American press-photographer, named Wallace Litwin, was on board the Roosevelt to photograph U.S. planes taking to the skies from the aircraft carrier.
It was while securing the pictures that Litwin sighted a circular, silver object maneuvering above the American fleet. Litwin, who was shooting with color film, managed to obtain three photos of the UFO. Significantly, all the photos had the Roosevelt in shot – something that gave the pictures depth of field and assisted in determining the size of the UFO, which, according to Litwin’s report, was considerable.
Twenty-four hours later, a similar object was seen over the North Sea. Again, it was silver in color and circular in shape. On that occasion, an interception was attempted by a number of RAF fighter aircraft engaged in the exercise. The UFO easily outdistanced itself from the planes.
Then there is the testimony of William Maguire, formerly of the RAF. During Mainbrace he was posted to RAF Sandwich, Kent, England where something seriously strange was going down. In Maguire’s own words…
“My memory was that everything was in a complete flap. Normally, in a military situation everything is ordered, regular and set out. But here was a situation that was plainly out of control. Mechanics were flying about all over the place.”
As Maguire got his bearings, and the situation was revealed to him in its starkest form, the reasons behind the blind panic became staggeringly clear: a huge, unidentified aerial object was being tracked on the radar-scopes high over the English Channel: “The mechanics were being blamed for not calibrating the instruments properly; we were being blamed for not interpreting the readings correctly. Every single instrument on the base was showing this enormous object sitting up at an unbelievable height. It was the size of a warship and it just stood there.”
Now we move on to the world of the CIA: as part of their monitoring of foreign press agencies, the CIA obtained a copy of a Norwegian newspaper clipping concerning an incident that had occurred on September 18. Published in a Harstad, Norway newspaper, a CIA translation of the article reads as follows:
“On 18 September, at 1400 hours, three forestry workers who were working right outside Kirknes, noticed a flat, round object hovering motionless at about 500 meters altitude. The object appeared to have a diameter of 15-20 meters. After the workers had observed the object for a while, it suddenly flew away at great speed in a northwesterly direction. It appears that only these workers saw the object; they swear, however, that their report is true.”
It must be said that the characteristics displayed by the UFO were very similar to those described at RAF Topcliffe just one day later.
And we’re still not done with Mainbrace. In his book The Report on Unidentified Flying Objects, Edward J. Ruppelt – former head of the U.S. Air Force’s Project Blue Book – revealed that a British Royal Air Force intelligence officer, on an exchange visit to the Pentagon, admitted it was the Mainbrace sightings that led the British Government to officially recognize the UFO.
Curiously, Ruppelt also stated in his book that prior to the commencement of the NATO exercise, it had been suggested by someone in the Pentagon that Naval Intelligence should “keep an eye open for UFOs” during Mainbrace.
Why someone might have had advance notice that UFOs were likely to turn up during Mainbrace remains a mystery to this day. Unless, of course, NATO knows better…
Every so often, those of us who are invested in the serious study of alleged UFO craft hear some incredible stories, which variously involve the testimony of trained pilots and other witnesses to unusual things seen in the skies. Countless numbers of stories that involve this sort of interaction between airmen and exotic-looking aircraft can be found by performing online searches, with the occasional appearance of flight audio that recounts such events.
Recently, a story along these lines was shared with me by one of my listeners, who had recently heard this subject being discussed on the The Gralien Report Podcast. Thus, she felt compelled to share the following account with me, in hopes that somebody else may have heard about what may have been going on recently in the skies over Indiana. Was it a UFO, or something else?
Here’s the message that appeared in my inbox only a few days ago:
I heard something today and thought that with your contacts in the ufo field you might be able to find something out. My sister called me today and told me that her husbands best friend (who is a pilot) was flying in Indiana airspace last night. He received a call over his radio redirecting him from his original flight plan. He said everyone was being redirected out of the area. At the time he said he was close enough to look into this no fly zone and he saw a very bright light. He also said that F18’s were in the air. He said that the chatter over the radio from the other pilots was all about this bright light, the F18’s, and the fact that they had orders to shoot!
I did a google search to see if I could find any news reports of ufo sightings in Indiana last night but was unsuccessful.
In truth, this was indeed the very first I had heard of such an incident, and a subsequent online search seemed to turn up few further details.
In the past, various incidents that involved the appearance of UFOs in midst of Fighter Pilots have occasionally resulted in disaster. Perhaps the most infamous, taken directly from the files of Project Blue Book, dealt with the death of 25-year-old pilot named Captain Thomas F. Mantell, on January 7, 1948. Mantell, of the Kentucky Air National Guard, had been pursuing what was believed to be a “flying saucer” at a high altitude, and in attempting to reach it himself, likely passed out due to loss of oxygen or similar circumstances, thus resulting in the crash of his jet. Rather tragically, Edward Ruppelt would later surmise that the entire Mantell incident may have involved nothing more than a high-altitude weather balloon, which, from Mantell’s perspective, could certainly have resembled a huge, silvery flying disc.
So far as the more recent incident over Indiana goes, few details have been made available with regard to just what may have been going on… and fortunately, there have been no reports of ill-fated pursuits of strange UFO craft on part of the U.S. Airforce this time around, either.
UFO Disclosure lobbyist Stephen Bassett has started up a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for his lobbying project to bring about an announcement from the United States government that extraterrestrials are interacting with humanity and earth.
On the campaign page, he writes,
This funding effort is in service to every citizen of every nation now convinced the world should not wait one more day for confirmation we are not alone is this universe. For 70 years this truth has been embargoed by your government. After 20 years of engagement of the issue, I know this embargo can end this year with your help.
Bassett is the founder of the Paradigm Research Group, an activist organization that has been working since 1996 to end the “truth embargo” established by the American government in regards to an alleged ET presence on earth.

The GoFundMe campaign, which is attempting to raise $50,000, is slated for a few key projects. First, it will allow his group to “keep the pressure on the media to engage the politics of Disclosure throughout 2017” and to hire a “public relations liaison who has substantial contacts with the new Administration.” Secondly, it will be used to set up an office in Washington DC, “seek professional speaker representation,” and to begin working in European countries, as well as to develop media and revamp their current website.
Many have been critical of the Disclosure movement (myself included), and any lobbyist or movement needs to accept that. Criticism leads to a healthy democracy, which is what Bassett is essentially trying to establish by pushing for Disclosure. However, one does have to admire him for trying. It has undoubtedly not been easy to do this work, and trying to raise money for this project is similar to Atlas carrying the world upon his shoulders. Except the world is flat, at least according to Mr. Bassett; it would be more like carrying a serving tray full of water and rocks upon your shoulders like some sort of strange cosmic waiter.
All joking aside, Mr. Bassett is doing what he believes in, and pushing for more transparency in government is a noble pursuit. Perhaps the government is hiding knowledge via a “truth embargo.” Perhaps the millions of sightings, countless witnesses, and allegedly truthful testimony of dozens of high ranking politicians and military personnel actually points to one of the greatest secrets ever kept. The world may not yet be convinced, but perhaps one day that will change.
If anyone thinks that this is truly a cause worthy of their attention, one can literally put their money where their mouth is. It all depends really upon what people believe at this point…unless they believe the earth is flat. It’s not. It’s an oblate spheroid. That is a fact, a real fact, not one of those alternative ones people just make up.
It was the tweet heard round the worlds. On John Podesta’s last day at the White House on February 13th, the longtime Presidential counselor, who is likely to chair a 2016 Hillary Clinton campaign, dashed off a confession that lit the blogosphere with thousands of retweets and comments: “Finally, my biggest failure of 2014: Once again not securing the #disclosure of the UFO files.”
Along with the media, which couldn’t resist a spoof by late-night comedian Jimmy Fallon, conspiracy theorists are having a field day. Taking Podesta’s barb as confirmation of fantastic coverups by operatives with knowledge of extraterrestrials and twisted political agendas, they imagine Podesta himself holds devastating secrets. Some are claiming with bravado that their own activism is what prompted his recent lighthearted remark.
The facts hardly bear that out.
Actually, as surprising as the tweet was, Podesta’s position on the controversial issue was not exactly news. A staunch proponent of open government, he has previously called for the release of any government files on unidentified flying objects, or more broadly, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), that merit such action under existing law. As Chief of Staff for President Bill Clinton, Podesta pressed for Executive Order 12958 which declassified broad categories of information formerly withheld on the grounds of national security.
In 2002, Podesta began publicly supporting what became a landmark Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit filed by the Coalition for Freedom of Information, an independent advocacy group. NASA had been stonewalling and refusing to release its records concerning a significant 1965 UFO incident in Kecksburg, PA. Many witnesses described seeing a fireball in the evening sky, followed by a controlled landing and the systematic military recovery of a spacecraft-like object, rushed away on the back of a flatbed truck. As reported by local radio and newspapers, U.S. military personnel cordoned off the area, investigated the site, and left without ever providing a full report of the incident other than to dismiss it as a meteor.

During the lawsuit’s final hearing in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia in 2007, the exasperated Presiding Judge, Emmet G. Sullivan, declared that “heads should roll” at NASA and that NASA’s case was a “ball of yarn.” He approved a settlement that required NASA to comb through hundreds of documents in specified locations, and provide them to journalist and plaintiff Leslie Kean, under the watchful eye of the court.
Success at forcing an agency to do this kind of extensive historical search under FOIA without Congressional intervention was unprecedented. Podesta called the victory “a triumph for open government and the spiritof inquiry.”

But - there was one problem. The resulting documents did not include one iota of information relating to the Kecksburg case, despite an earnest and thorough effort by NASA staff. Three hundred boxes were searched, on top of the hundreds of pages released during the court proceedings prior to the settlement. Yet they revealed nothing about the case at hand.
Could these be the “UFO files” that Podesta was alluding to in his tweet? Might there be others as well, stored in locations inaccessible to the FOIA in violation of the law?
Podesta has been a brave voice for sanity and objectivity on a subject that is generally considered unworthy of serious discussion. In a foreword for Kean’s 2010 book, UFOs: Generals, Pilots and Government Officials Go On the Record, Podesta wrote: “The time to pull the curtain back on this subject is long overdue.” Describing himself as “a curious skeptic” who understands the difference between fact and fiction, he said the American people “want to know, and they can handle the truth.”
Official investigations around the world have consistently found that a small but significant percentage of sightings defy conventional explanation, most of them involving police officers, military personnel, pilots and air traffic controllers. Physical evidence such as radar returns, measurable effects on the environment, or scientifically analyzed photographs accompany the best cases.
In 2011, Podesta hosted a private meeting of government officials, scientists, and military and intelligence experts, organized by Kean and her coalition, at his liberal think tank, the Center for American Progress. A panel presented expert briefings backing the establishment of a modest official project to evaluate UAP in cooperation with other countries.
“The official position of the U.S., which has denied the existence of any abnormal aerial phenomena since 1969, is a weighty handicap and has a negative influence on the attitude of many governments,” wrote Yves Sillard, former Director General of the French National Space Center, in his briefing paper. “If this position could be modified, the U.S. would probably play a leading role in this necessary international effort.”
Ricardo Bermúdez, a retired Air Force general who directs the Chilean investigative effort, agrees. “United States participation would be beneficial for all countries,” he stated.
A U.S. agency is long overdue. The Air Force’s official investigation, Project Blue Book, was terminated in 1970 after two decades, since no sightings were determined to pose a national security threat. Yet over 700 cases remained unexplained. Since then, no branch of the government has investigated UAP.
This lack of both transparency and responsive action to alarming UFO incidents undermines public trust. Some unidentified objects may be attributable to foreign military aircraft or drones, and should be of general defense interest. Other phenomena display such unusual characteristics that they are of broader scientific interest. Under certain circumstances, UAP can even raise air safety concerns. Still, the FAA discourages pilots from reporting any such incidents, in stark contrast to policy in Europe and South America.
Official agencies in France and Chile, along with other South American countries, conduct rigorous, open UAP investigations. In 2014, the heads of these offices met in Paris for the first time, to begin a cooperative venture. The U.K. spent decades collecting data, but closed down its office in 2008 due to the overwhelming stream of Freedom of Information requests besieging the staff. Interest was so great that the Ministry of Defense decided to simply release all its documents online.

Yet here at home, a 2012 poll showed that nearly 80% of Americans believe the government has concealed information about UFOs. As a result, frustrated citizens turn to fringe conspiracists seeking some way of understanding our irrational denial of this very real phenomenon.
When UFO events occur here, civilian groups do the best they can in battling the obstacles to investigating them. At Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on Nov. 7, 2006, a metallic disc was observed hovering over the United Airlines terminal for at least five minutes, before shooting straight up in the sky, at great speed, cutting a hole in the cloud bank. This was not a flying machine known to any of the aviation experts who witnessed or later analyzed the event.
On March 13, 1997, hundreds if not thousands of citizens, including the governor at the time, saw massive delta-shaped objects gliding silently over Arizona. Like the Kecksburg case, this event has never been explained despite a class action lawsuit filed in 2000 by witnesses in Phoenix. A court-ordered search for information was issued to the Department of Defense, but once again, no pertinent records were obtained.
Nonetheless, much more data on UFOs has been accumulated than ever before, and files have been released around the world. The phenomenon’s physical reality is now firmly established. But its nature and origin remain a problem. Meanwhile, astronomers have reported that there could be as many as 40 billion habitable Earth-size planets in our galaxy; one out of every five sunlike stars has a planet the size of Earth orbiting it in the Goldilocks zone.
We need to join the other countries taking responsible action in addressing this persistent mystery, preferably at the White House level where The Office of Science and Technology Policy is well positioned to take on this task. OBSERVATION DE JETS BLEUS DEPUIS LA STATION SPATIALE INTERNATIONALE
La question de leur existence a fait l’objet de débats pendant de nombreuses années : d’insaisissables décharges électriques dans la haute atmosphère, nommées sylphes rouges, jets bleus, farfadets ou elfes. Faisant l’objet de rapports anecdotiques par des pilotes, ces phénomènes s'avèrent difficiles à étudier car ils se produisent au-dessus des orages.
Proposée par l’Institut Spatial National du Danemark, l’expérience Thor, qui s’était déroulée pendant la mission « iriss » de 10 jours de l’astronaute de l’ESA Andreas Mogensen à bord de la Station, avait pour objet d’étudier les orages. Une liste d’endroits où des orages étaient prévus avait été communiquée à Andreas, qui a pris des photos avec l’appareil le plus sensible de la Station pour capturer ce que l’on appelle les phénomènes lumineux transitoires.
Après analyse, l’équipe à l’origine de l’expérience a publié un article scientifique confirmant la présence de nombreux jets bleus d’une envergure de l’ordre du kilomètre autour de 18km d’altitude, et même d’un jet bleu à impulsion atteignant 40km d’altitude. Une vidéo enregistrée par Andreas au-dessus du Golfe du Bengale alors qu’il volait à 28000km/h montre clairement le phénomène électrique – le premier du genre.

Des satellites avaient déjà étudié le phénomène mais leur angle de vue n’est pas idéal pour rassembler des données sur l’échelle des jets bleus et des décharges bleues, qui sont de plus petite taille. La Station spatiale, placée sur une orbite relativement basse au-dessus de la Terre est au contraire idéalement située pour prendre des photos des sylphes et des jets.
Dans le cadre de Thor, Andreas avait pour consigne de viser les tourelles orageuses (des colonnes nuageuses qui s’étirent jusqu’à la haute atmosphère), et l’astronaute a filmé une vidéo de 160 secondes montrant 245 flashs de jets bleus, soit environ 90 par minute, émanant du haut d’une tourelle nuageuse qui s’écartait de l’orage au-dessus du Golfe du Bengale.
Les décharges et les jets bleus sont des exemples d’une part de notre climat que nous connaissons très peu ; en effet, comme les orages électriques atteignent la stratosphère, ils jouent un rôle dans la manière dont notre atmosphère nous protège des radiations cosmiques.

Cette expérience a confirmé que la Station spatiale est une plate-forme utile à l’observation de ces phénomènes. Andreas conclut : « Ce n’est pas tous les jours que l’on filme un nouveau phénomène météorologique, je suis donc très satisfait du résultat, mais encore plus satisfait à l’idée que les scientifiques auront bientôt l’opportunité d’étudier ces curieux orages plus en détail. »

Alpha Centauri is having a moment: Our mysterious neighboring star system has been seeing a surge of scientific interest lately, and for good reason.
Although space researchers have often focused on our own star system, Alpha Centauri has become a more viable option to closely study, and even potentially travel to one day. Our nearest stellar neighbor has received a lot of buzz recently due to the announcement of Breakthrough Starshot, a mission backed by famed cosmologist Stephen Hawking, Russian investor Yuri Milner and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, with the goal of sending probes to Alpha Centauri someday.
Although it's the closest star system to our sun, Alpha Centauri is still 4.37 light-years (25 trillion miles, or 40 trillion kilometers) away from Earth. Because it's so far away, reaching and studying Alpha Centauri poses significant challenges. But the three-star system — comprising Alpha Centauri A, Alpha Centauri B and a faint red dwarf star Proxima Centauri — also presents enormous opportunities for furthering space research, which is why it is the focus of our mission at Project Blue. NASA's Kepler space telescope has found thousands of exoplanets in the universe, many of which orbit in the habitable zones of their stars and could be Earth-like. In fact, one out of every two sun-like stars has a rocky, potentially Earth-like planet in its habitable zone. At Project Blue, we are aiming to actually see one with our own eyes — and take the first photograph of a planet like Earth.
So, why focus on Alpha Centauri? In short, it gives us the best opportunity to accomplish our mission.
A large reason for this is its proximity. After Alpha Centauri, the next-closest sun-like star is 2.5 times farther away and would require a telescope roughly 2.5 times larger in order to be viewed at the same level of detail.
The system also has a unique binary structure: It contains not just one, but two stars similar to the sun, doubling our chances of finding planets in either of their habitable zones. In fact, that gives us an estimated 85 percent probability that the Alpha Centauri system harbors at least one potentially habitable planet. However, although the binary structure increases our odds, it also presents challenges. In order to take the photograph, we have to use a specialized system to efficiently suppress the light of two stars to see any potential surrounding planets.

Finally, the last reason our focus remains on our neighboring star system is that Alpha Centauri A is a yellow "G2"-type star that has a temperature and color that closely match the sun's, thus increasing the chances of the existence of an Earth-like planet. Alpha Centauri B, which is a bit cooler and redder than our sun, is also still a good candidate to host a rocky planet like Earth.
The image we hope to take would reveal whether the planet appears blue, as Earth does from space, which could suggest that it hosts liquid oceans or a substantial atmosphere — and, therefore, the potential to support life.
Our chances of spotting a planet successfully are high in Alpha Centauri. This is only underscored by the discovery of an Earth-like planet in the star system earlier this year. Scientists have located the planet Proxima b, with a minimum mass 1.3 times that of Earth, orbiting in the habitable zone of its star, Proxima Centauri.
This recent discovery is indeed exciting, and it sparked Breakthrough Starshot to announce that it will focus on the potential to travel to Proxima b one day, once the technology is developed. However, the planet is not a good option for Project Blue. Because Proxima b orbits so closely to its small, dim star, it would be extremely difficult to image with a telescope, and as such, our focus remains on the larger stars Alpha Centauri A and B.
Alpha Centauri's potential is exciting to not only the science community but the future of humanity, and it's clear that it will provide us with some of our most exciting space discoveries in the years to come.
Mars Was Recently Hit by a Meteorite 'Shotgun' Blast

On Earth, we are blessed with a thick protective atmosphere that prevents all but the biggest space rocks from wreaking havoc on the surface. Mars, however, doesn't have that luxury, highlighting yet another deadly hazard that will threaten any future human presence on the Red Planet.
Take this recent observation from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter for example. From afar, a small cluster of dark blemishes on an otherwise pale landscape was the only indication of a meteorite impact, but on closer inspection, we realize it wasn't a single impact — it was in fact dozens all clustering around a small area in the Tharsis region of the Red Planet.
Initially detected by the orbiter's Mars Context Camera (CTX), scientists were able to determine that the impact must have occurred some time between 2008 and 2014. That detection led to a followup on Oct. 4, 2016, by the mission's High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera and the true nature of the impact became apparent. Two large impact craters accompanied by up to 30 smaller craters litter the scene, revealing that a meteoroid broke up in Mars' atmosphere, sending pieces of rock raining down onto the dusty surface.
The MRO regularly surveys for, studies and tracks long-term changes in fresh impact sites on Mars. These impacts not only tell us how frequent meteorite impacts are on Mars, they also provide a natural means to excavate material so we can see what minerals — that have not been exposed to the harsh weathering effects of being exposed on the Red Planet's surface — lie beneath. Also, by tracking long-term changes to the dusty material around the blast sites, we can learn something about surface winds and the movement of fine particles over time.
It is worth noting that the dark areas surrounding the impact sites isn't only ejecta that got blasted out of the crater. As the meteorites slammed into the ground, shocked air blew surface dust away, stripping the darker, fresh material bare around the crater. By analyzing the pattern of impact ejecta, planetary scientists are able to determine the direction from which the meteorites came from. In the above image, the meteoroid likely struck from the south (traveling from bottom to top).
Interesting science this may be, but it's also a warning. All indications are that we'll be sending a human expedition to Mars sometime around the 2030's — whether that be a NASA mission, via Elon Musk's SpaceX Interplanetary Transport System or an expedition led by another nation, like China — and if we play our cards right, we may establish a permanent human presence soon after. But Mars will be a harsh extraterrestrial home that will require a momentous effort to create sustainable habitats.
As Mars' atmosphere is approximately 100 times thinner than Earth's, more meteors that streak through the atmosphere make it to the ground as meteorites. And in many cases, the atmosphere isn't quite thick enough to burn-up incoming space rocks, but thick enough to cause them to break up into many pieces. So rather than getting hit by a single projectile, depending on the size of the meteor, many bits of projectile can blanket bomb a large area.
For our future Mars colonists living in pressurized habitats on the surface — which, for the most part, would be vulnerable to falling rocks — it would be a grim reality of taking your chances of being hit by a single meteorite or by many pieces of meteorite, the cosmic equivalent of trying to dodge a bullet or buckshot from a shotgun. Neither is a good scenario, but you're more likely to get hit by the buckshot.
Waves on Mars? Sand Ripples in Striking Red Planet Photos

Waves of sand on the parched surface of Mars, spotted by NASA's Curiosity rover, are reminiscent of ripples on the surface of a lake.
While there may have once been lakes, rivers and oceans on the surface of Mars, today the Red Planet is more parched than the driest deserts on Earth. (However, very salty liquid water is thought to exist in a few places on Mars.)
But new images from the Curiosity rover, released today (Feb. 6), show windswept stretches of sand that look like waves cresting on a body of water. The repeating ripples create a hypnotic pattern that stretches across the baked landscape.

Curiosity has been scuttling around on the surface of Mars since August of 2012. In that time, the little robot has explored beautiful and treacherous landscapes, and sent back images of all kinds of interesting surface features, including massive sand dunes and rocky outcrops.

The rover's primary mission is to evaluate whether Mars may have once had an environment that could support life. In Curiosity's first two years on the surface, the rover found ample evidence that Mars once supported large bodies of water, a necessary ingredient for life as we know it.

Chris Augustin tours UFO conferences across the globe giving the shocking story amid claims he has experiences missing time due to abductions by extraterrestrials - and it all started after his misadventure at the USAF base in the Nevada desert.

Mr Augustine claims it was six months later before his first of many alien abductions that then followed.
It was at around 10pm in February 2002 when he was driving home from his girlfriend's and lost three and a half minutes while at the wheel.
He then said he had a spike in psychic experiences, suffered more abductions, would wake up with blood in his bed, and was left with a bizarre metal implant in his lower left leg that was placed there by extraterrestrials.
Mr Augustine told the conference exactly what happens before people wake up with unexplained gaps in time.

Fireball Hissing: Weird Cause of Noises Made by Meteors Found

Bright, flaring meteors are sometimes accompanied by faint noises. What's strange about these popping, sizzling, rustling, and hissing sounds are that they reportedly occur almost instantly to earthly onlookers. This makes little sense, as meteors are as far as sixty miles away from viewers on the ground, so any sound they make should take several minutes be heard. What's going on? Do meteors somehow defy the laws of physics?
Researcher Richard Spalding and several of his colleagues at Sandia National Laboratories recently set out to study this strange phenomenon, and in a study just published to the journal Scientific Reports, they announce that the sounds are likely created through light.
Meteor fireballs sometimes pulse with light many times brighter than the full Moon, and these blasts can briefly heat the surfaces of objects many miles away. Such sudden temperature changes can actually create sound.
"We suggest that each pulse of light can heat the surfaces of natural dielectric transducers," Spalding and his colleagues write. "The surfaces rapidly warm and conduct heat into the nearby air, generating pressure waves. A succession of light-pulse-produced pressure waves can then manifest as sound to a nearby observer."
The "dielectric transducers" the researchers mention are objects that readily absorb light, have low conductivity, and heat up quickly. These include dark paint, leaves, grass, and dark clothing. Sky-watchers in close proximity to such objects are much more likely to "hear" meteors.
Another incredible transducer is hair. Previous studies have shown that people with fine and frizzy hair are more likely to hear meteors. This makes intuitive sense, the researchers write.
"Hair near the ears will create localized sound pressure, so it is likely to be heard. Also, hair has a large surface-to-volume ratio which maximizes sound creation."
The explanation Spalding and his colleagues offer is actually tied to a well-known phenomenon known as the photoacoustic effect, describing a process whereby materials absorb light energy and produce sound waves. Alexander Graham Bell originally noticed the effect in 1880, and used it to invent a device called the photophone, which transmitted speech via light.
Astronomers have previously suggested that some meteors emit very low frequency radio waves, which produce near instantaneous sounds. They dubbed such meteors "electrophonic meteors." Spalding and his team suggest their explanation is more likely, and indeed, it may be preferable to sky-watchers, as it suggests that anyone can hear a meteor provided it's bright enough and they situate themselves in a quiet area with photoacoustically-sensitive objects nearby.

The AMS has received 467 reports so far (and counting…) about of a fireball event over seen over Wisconsin on Monday, February 6th 2017 around 01:27 CST (07:27 UT.). The green fireball was seen primarily from Illinois and Wisconsin but witnesses from Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Iowa, New York, Kentucky, Minnesota and Ontario (Canada) also reported the event.

Twice upon a time (maybe, thrice upon a time), a tadpole frog who lived by the side of a vast blue-green ocean visited his distant tadpole frog cousin who lived very far away in a deep, small well in a very dark cave.

Repressing the codons in the DNA meant that human beings would never be able to reach the same levels of consciousness and spiritual awakening of the Anunnaki themselves. Anomaly hunters have recently come across what seems to be an artificial complex inside a crater on the Moon.

Its silent and smooth movement is incredible, but its design...two disks one above another that is really baffling to me. I have never seen a UFO like this before...its really got me scratching my head about this one. This video blew me away when I saw the craft pass behind the buildings. What this tells me is that the UFO was huge! I am talking city bus size and it passed extremely close to these buildings. No jet engine heard, no propellers or wings detected and from the looks of it, no one on the ground seemed to have any idea what the heck this could be other than an alien craft. Scott C. Waring
Sci-Fi Comes Alive: 'Dune' Star Photographed Above Volcano

The desert planet Arrakis is imaginary — from the famous science fiction series "Dune" — but the star it's said to orbit is real: Canopus, the second brightest star as seen from Earth. Here, Canopus shines above a volcano range on La Palma, Canary Islands.
An effort called project nightflight, led by astrophotographers Karoline Mrazek and Erwin Matys, captured the photo on May 3, 2016. The photographers used image stacking and a diffusor filter to create the image's striking views of the La Palma landscape and the shining star. The project promotes interest in and conservation of the night sky, and its work can be found online at www.project-nightflight.net.
Canopus is likely 313 light-years away from Earth, and because of the object's brightness, it is useful in spacecraft navigations. The star is visible from February into the spring for latitudes up to 35 degrees north, project nightflight told Space.com in an email.
In this photo, the "Dune" star hangs over a setting not so dissimilar from the Spice-mining planet author Frank Herbert imagined orbiting the star. But in the books, enormous, deadly sandworms terrorized that planet.
"Although the often-barren, sandy dunes of the volcanoes on the Canary Islands sometimes remind us of [the series' first main character] Muad'Dib's Dune planet, there were absolutely no wormsigns near or far," project nightflight said.
A giant black hole ripped apart a star and then gorged on its remains for about a decade, according to astronomers. This is more than ten times longer than any observed episode of a star's death by black hole.

A supermassive black hole has been gobbling up a star for more than a decade — about 10 times longer than any previously known such meal, a new study finds.
The extreme duration of this meal suggests that the star is incredibly large, or that it's being consumed more completely than any other known star that has fallen prey to a black hole, study team members said.
The astronomers in the study used three space telescopes — NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and Swift satellite, and the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton craft — to examine an X-ray source known as XJ1500+154, which lies 1.8 billion light-years from Earth. [Images: Black Holes of the Universe]
XMM-Newton first spotted this source in July 2005 and has continued to monitor it since that time, as have Chandra and Swift. Chandra's observations showed that XJ1500+154 sits at the center of a small galaxy, strongly suggesting that it's associated with a supermassive black hole. (These behemoths, which can contain billions of times more mass than the sun, lurk at the centers of most, if not all, galaxies.)
The X-rays are being generated by a "tidal disruption event" (TDE) — a star or other object that's being torn apart by a black hole's powerful gravity, the researchers said. Some of the doomed body's material falls inward during a TDE, heating up so much that it generates an X-ray flare.
The XJ1500+154 X-ray flare is like nothing astronomers have ever seen, study team members said.
Black holes are so bizarre, they sound unreal. Yet astronomers have found good evidence they exist.
"We have witnessed a star's spectacular and prolonged demise," lead author Dacheng Lin, of the University of New Hampshire, said in a statement. "Dozens of tidal disruption events have been detected since the 1990s, but none that remained bright for nearly as long as this one."
The three telescopes' observations also suggest that the black hole has been growing rapidly while gobbling up the star. This conclusion could shed light on an astronomical mystery — how supermassive black holes managed to grow so big so fast long ago. (Some of these monsters already contained 1 billion solar masses just 1 billion years after the Big Bang that created the universe.)
"This event shows that black holes really can grow at extraordinarily high rates," co-author Stefanie Komossa, of QianNan Normal University for Nationalities in Duyun City, China, said in the same statement. "This may help [us] understand how precocious black holes came to be."
The record-setting meal won't last forever, of course. The team's modeling work suggests that the XJ1500+154 X-ray flare will dim considerably over the next few years, and the food supply will decline significantly over the next decade.
The new study was published online Monday (Feb. 6) in the journal Nature Astronomy.
Ce mercredi 5 novembre 1975, sept bucherons ont passé la journée à couper des arbres dans la forêt nationale Apache-Sitgreaves, dans les Montagnes Blanches, proche de Snowflake, à 240 km au nord de Phoenix (Arizona, USA). Le patron, Mike Rogers, avait vingt-huit ans, le plus âgé des sept hommes, et ses subordonnés se nomment : Allen Dalis, John Goulette, Dwayne Smith, Kenneth Peterson, Steve Pierce et Travis Walton, qui a 22 ans à l'époque.
Le coucher du Soleil dans ce lieu un peu élevé et montagneux se produisit vers 17h45 et, après avoir continué à travaillé dans la lumière déclinante, l'arrêt du labeur fut donné à 18 heure précise. Le temps de récupérer les outils, les scies à chaînes, les bidons de pétrole et d'huile et de se regrouper, les hommes s'entassèrent dans le vieux pick-up de 1965, qui put partir vers 18h10. Les places étaient bien définies dans la camionnette : les non-fumeurs à l'avant (Mike Rogers qui conduit, Kenneth Peterson au mileu et Travis Walton à droite, contre de la porte donc. Tous les autres sont assis à l'arrière et sont fumeurs. Ils commencèrent à monter la crète menant à la route, ils devraient être rentrés chez eux vers 19h30. Ils ouvrirent les fenêtres malgré le froid qui tombait : la chaleur et sueur du travail était encore bien présente...
Ils avaient atteint la route depuis quelques minutes et continuaient à monter quand Travis Walton aperçut une lumière à travers les arbres situés à leur droite et 100 mètres en avant. Il supposa d'abord qu'il s'agissait du soleil en train de descendre à l'ouest, mais se souvint que ce dernier avait déjà disparu depuis une bonne demi-heure. Il pensa alors qu'il s'agissait des lumières d'un camp de chasseurs, ou des phares ou même un possible incendie. Les collègues placés à droite de la camionnette avaient du aussi voir quelque chose car ils étaient bien silencieux. Alors qu'ils continuaient à avancer vers cette luminosité, une trouée dans les arbres permis de la distinguer un peu mieux...
" Fils de . . ." commença Allen Dalis.
- Qu'est-ce que c'était ? Demanda Travis Walton.
Ses yeux s'efforçaient de donner un sens à la lueur scintillante à travers les arbres denses qui bloquaient leur vision. De la fenêtre ouverte, il pouvait voir l'éclat jaunâtre apparaître au travers de leur chemin, sur la route, quarante mètres plus loin. Du siège du conducteur, Mike Rogers ne pouvait pas utiliser son œil droit sans se pencher, " Qu'est-ce que vous voyez ? " Demanda-t-il avec curiosité.
Dwayne Smith répondit :" Je ne sais pas - mais cela ressemblait à un avion écrasé suspendu dans un arbre ! "
Finalement, notre excitation croissante a poussé Mike Rogers à accélérer un peu la petite vitesse que le pick-up pouvait encore atteindre sur l'inclinaison. Nous passâmes au-delà de l'ombre des feuillus persistants, vers l'endroit où nous pouvions avoir une vue dégagée sur la source de l'étrange éclat. Soudainement, nous avons été électrisés par la vue la plus impressionnante, incroyable que nous avions vue dans nos vies entières.
" Arrêtez ! " Cria John Goulette. " Arrête le camion ! "
Alors que le camion glissait dans un arrêt poussiéreux sur la route rocailleuse, Travis Walton ouvrit sa portière pour avoir une vue plus claire de la chose éblouissante.
" Mon Dieu ! " Cria Allen Dalis. " C'est une soucoupe volante ! "...
Mike Rogers coupa le moteur et ils regardèrent tous, interloqués un étrange disque doré qui planait silencieusement à 20 pieds au-dessus du sol . Nous avons regardé, épouvanté. Les hommes du côté gauche du camion se penchaient pour qu'ils puissent voir. Là, à vingt pieds (6 mètres) au-dessus du sol, un étrange disque d'or planait silencieusement, à 30 yards d'eux (27 mètres). Ses bords étaient clairement définis. La machine d'or était nettement dessinée contre le bleu profond du ciel clair du soir. Un hâlo léger jaune émanait de l'embarcation et illuminait faiblement la zone immédiate d'une lueur mystérieuse. Sous la lumière étrange, la forêt autour prenait des teintes bizarres, qui étaient très différentes de ses couleurs naturelles. Les arbres, les branches et l'herbe reflétaient de nouvelles nuances subtiles et singulières.
D'après leur estimation, l'objet avait un diamètre global (un diamètre étant une ligne droite) de quinze ou vingt pieds (5 à 6 mètres - soit 18 mètres de circonférence env.); Il avait huit ou dix pieds d'épaisseur (3 mètres). Le disque aplati avait une forme semblable à celle de deux gigantesques poêlons placés lèvre à lèvre, avec un petit bol rond retourné sur le dessus. A peine visible de leur angle de vue, un dôme blanc dépassait en effet le contour supérieur du navire. Ils pouvaient voir des rayures plus foncées d'un éclat d'argent terne qui divisaient des zones incandescentes de sections en panneaux. La lumière jaunâtre pâle émise par la surface avait l'éclat du métal chaud, incandescent d'un haut fourneau. Il n'y avait aucune antenne ou protubérance visible d'aucune sorte. Rien qui ressemblait à une trappe, portes ou structures en forme de fenêtres ne pouvait être vu. Il n'y avait aucun mouvement et aucun bruit de l'engin.
Selon Travis Walton, il fut soudainement saisi de l'urgence d'aller voir la chose de près. Il eut peur de son départ et qu'il puisse manquer la chance de sa vie de satisfaire sa curiosité à ce sujet. Il sortit précipitamment du camion et se dirigea rapidement mais calmement vers le mystérieux véhicule et une clairière...
Ces collègues s’inquiétèrent de son action aussitôt :
" Qu'est ce que tu crois faire ? " Demanda Mike Rogers dans un fort murmure.
" Hé, Travis ! " l'appelèrent les hommes avec insistance.
Walton a longuement hésité, puis il est reparti plus lentement vers l'engin, à demi-courbé. Puis il s'est redressé en entrant dans le cercle de luminosité jaune laissé par l'engin sur le sol. Il était à peine à 1m80 d'être en-dessous de l'engin quand il s'est arrêté à nouveau. Là, il perçoit comme un son sourd, un étrange mélange de sons mécaniques bas et aigus. Il y avait des pointes intermittentes, perçantes, des bip superposés sur le bruit lointain, un bas grondement d'une machinerie lourde. Les sons étranges étaient tellement mélangés qu'il était impossible de les comparer à un son quelconque, déjà entendu.
- Travis, éloigne-toi de là ! cria Mike Rogers.
L'interpellé a jeté un regard fugitif sur le pick-up garé sur la route, puis a reporté son attention sur l'étude du navire incroyable. Soudain, il est surpris par une houle puissante et tonnante avec l'augmentation du volume des vibrations de l'engin. Il semble sauter sur place à cause du son vibrant, comme celui d'une multitude de générateurs de turbine démarrant. Il voit que la soucoupe commençe à vaciller sur son axe avec un mouvement d'accélération, comme une balance autour d'un sommet non stabilisé. Le même côté a continué à lui faire face pendant que l'engin restait à peu près à la même hauteur tout en se balançant
Il était en train de s'accroupir lorsqu'un rayon bleu-vert brilla du fond de l'engin. Il n'a rien vu ni rien entendu, juste la sensation d'un coup engourdissant, comme une électroction. Et puis sa conscience s'est enfoncée dans des ténèbres intenses...
Les hommes dans le camion ont vu son corps s'archer en arrière, les bras et les jambes tendus, lorsque la force du coup l'a soulevé du sol. Il a été projeté en arrière, en l'air de plusieurs pieds (5-6 mètres). Ils ont vu son épaule droite frapper la dure terre rocheuse de la crète. Mon corps restait immobile, étendu sur le sol.
" Il l'a eu! " Cria Steve Pierce.
Dwayne Smith a crié: " Partons d'ici ! "
" Faites bouger ce fils de pute ! " hurla hystériquement Allen Dalis.
Ce n'était pas la peine de demander à Mike Rogers : il tâtonnait déjà désespérément, cherchant le commutateur d'allumage. Ses doigts tremblants saisirent finalement la clé. Le moteur rugit à la vie. Mike mit le camion sur la piste qui était parsemée de cailloux. Il tourna frénétiquement le volant d'un côté, puis de l'autre, parcourant la route tortueuse, écrasant la pédale de l'accélérateur...
- Il nous suit ? Cria-t-il par-dessus son épaule. Personne n'a répondu.
- C'est après nous ? Cria-t-il encore...
Quand encore aucune réponse ne vint, il se tourna pour voir les regards choqués et stupéfiés sur les visages de son équipe. Leurs visages pâles regardaient droit devant eux, vides. En réaction à l'horreur incroyable de ce qu'ils avaient vus, six bucherons endurcis étaient réduits à une terreur sans intelligence... lui-même terrorisé, il pencha la tête par la fenètre pour voir s'ils étaient poursuivis tout en écrasant la pédale... le camion faisait des embardés, cognait des petites roches en bordure de la route, et ce ne fut que lorsqu'ils perdirent le rétriviseur droit, touché par un tronc d'arbre et que le camion fit un vol plané sur une forte bosse, faisant gémir les amortisseurs d'une façon inquiétante à l'atterrissage, qu'il freina et diminua sa vitesse... réalisant que la mauvaise route et sa vitesse étaient tout aussi dangereux...
Il finit par arrêter la camionnette à 30 mètres de la Rim Road.
« Il ne semble pas être après nous », frissonna Mike Rogers. La pause a poussé les hommes hors de leur silence choqué. Ils ont commencé à japper hystériquement. Tout le monde hurlait aussitôt, dans une confusion de cris aigus. Il insista : " Je l'ai vu retomber, mais qu'est-ce qui lui est arrivé ? "
" Man, un rayon bleu est sorti du fond de cette chose et l'a frappé partout ! Cela semblait l'engloutir ." La voix de Kenneth Peterson était solennelle.
- Bon sang ! Il semblait qu'il se désagrègeait ! s'écria Dwayne Smith.
- Non, il était d'une seule pièce, contredit Steve Pierce. Je l'ai vu frapper le sol.
" Je sais une chose, il a l'air d'avoir été frappé par un éclair !" revint Dwayne Smith. " J'ai entendu un zap - comme si il avait touché un fil électrique ! "
" Hé, les gars, nous ferions mieux d'y retourner ! " a dit quelqu'un.
- Pas question, mec, je n'y retourne pas ! Dit quelqu'un d'autre.
Comme les hommes l'ont soutenu, Mike Rogers intervint. " Allons faire un feu pour que les gars qui ne veulent pas y aller puissent rester ici dans la clairière, tandis que le reste d'entre nous y retourna ".
A ce moment, une camionnette s'approche sur la route en contrebas : ils se précipitent et l'arrêtent, pour demander s'ils ont vu quelque chose... Le conducteur demande aussitôt s'ils avaient vu ça ?... Il semble que le chauffeur de ce camion ait vu un disque au sud, qui s'est élevé et est parti à toute vitesse vers le nord-est... Du coup, les bûcherons ne pensent plus à rien et reprennent la route, tout en discutant...
Ils discutent encore à un mile (1,5 km) sur la route, où ils ont atteint le virage qui allait au nord de Heber. Là, ils sont finalement arrivé à une conclusion inévitable. Mike Rogers a remit le camion à l'arrêt. Il a dit fermement : " Ce camion va faire demi-tour, tous ceux qui ne veulent pas venir peuvent sortir ici et maintenant, et attendre... Nous avons agi comme un tas de lâches. Maintenant, ce que nous devons faire est ce que nous devrions avoir fait en premier lieu ! "
Les hommes embarrassés ne protestent plus de revenir sur le site. Même si certains étaient encore réticents, ils avaient honte de le dire. Aussi, la perspective d'attendre seul dehors dans l'obscurité était bien pire que de revenir tous ensembles... Leur courage avait été renforcé par le temps et la distance du site. Cependant, lorsqu'ils tournèrent à gauche, au large de la Rim Road vers la scène originale, leur appréhension commençait à se reconstruire. Ils ont commencé à spéculer sur les possibilités redoutables de ce qu'ils pourraient trouver quand ils seront revenus. Plus ils se rapprochaient, plus ils étaient anxieux.
Quelqu'un a suggéré de mener le camion autour et de pointer les phares vers la pile de rondins au-dessus de laquelle ils avaient vu l'engin planant. Ils montèrent et tirèrent, en roulant vers le sapin qui se penchait sur le chemin. Leurs yeux ont cherché dans la zone éclairée par les phares. Ils n'ont rien trouvé.
" Nous allons juste devoir sortir et regarder autour, " dit Mike Rogers.
Ils ont cherché d'abord dans la sécurité des phares. Tout le monde est resté ensemble, se serrant près de Mike Rogers, qui portait la seule lampe de poche. Le faisceau de la lampe de poche sondait dans la nuit, en examinant chaque forme sombre. Ils ont cherché derrière chaque bûche, buisson et souche. Ils ont appelé à plusieurs reprises: " Travis! ... TRAVIS !! " A l'exception de leurs appels, les bois étaient tranquilles. Ils ont cherché plus au nord, comme AllenDavis avait suggéré. Ils ont cherché au-delà du sommet de la crête et plus au sud. Ils n'ont trouvé aucun signe nulle part - pas d'objets étrangers ou de marques inhabituelles. Pas de brûlures, pas d'empreintes ou de terrain dérangé. Pas une trace de pistes et aucune preuve d'une lutte.
Plus ils continuaient, plus Mike Rogers était inquiet, plus émotionné. Il trébucha, puis se releva, regardant ses pieds, luttant pour contrôler ses sentiments. La perte de son ami, sa culpabilité en partant, et la pression de la direction qui lui était demandée devinrent trop lourdes pour un instant. Finalement, Mike Rogers réussit à reprendre son sang-froid. " D'accord, les gars, nous ne faisons rien de bien ici. Allons-y ! "
Ils sont entrés dans le camion et ont commencé la longue route de retour à Heber. Le souvenir de ce qu'ils avaient vu récemment les a laissés avec une gamme de fortes réactions émotionnelles.
Puis Kenneth Peterson a exprimé la pensée qu'ils avaient tous évité jusqu'à présent. " Nous allons devoir en informer les autorités "...
Après avoir beaucoup réfléchi de peur qu'on les accuse de cette disparition, ils prennent l'initiative d'aller voir le shérif adjoint, qui alerte immédiatement le shérif Marlia Guillespie. Celui-ci soupçonne fortement ces hommes d'être à l'origine du meurtre de leur collègue, et que tôt ou tard ils vont avouer et raconter ce qu'il s'est réellement passé. Des fouilles intensives sont organisées sur les lieux afin de tenter de retrouver d'éventuelles traces du disparu, en vain. En fait, c'est bien durant les quatre jours suivant que la police, aidée pour l'occasion par plusieurs dizaines de volontaires, organise des battues pour retrouver Walton, sans succès. Pendant la battue, des tests de radioactivité étaient réalisés en vain sur le terrain, mais des radiations étaient présentes sur l'équipement des compagnons de Trevis Walton. Après quatre jours de recherches, le 9 novembre, des rumeurs du meurtre de Travis par ses camarades commencent à circuler parmi la population et les autorités. C'est alors que le shérif décide de faire passer les compagnons de Travis au détecteur de mensonge. De nombreuses caméras de télévision y assistèrent. La personne chargée de réaliser le test polygraphique (détecteur de mensonge) était l'une des meilleures de l'Arizona (C. Y. Gilson). Durant cet examen, cinq des collègues de Travis ont réalisé le test ; le dernier, Allen Dalis, a refusé de le passer. Le plus extraordinaire est que le résultat fut sans appel, car les cinq personnes furent jugées sincères par le détecteur de mensonge.
Le 10 novembre, en fin de journée, le beau-frère de Travis Walton reçoit un appel téléphonique en PCV : il s'agit de Travis qui l'appelle d'une cabine publique à quelques kilomètres de là. On le retrouve sur place, nu, désorienté et en état de choc, amaigri et déshydraté (comme le confirmera un examen médical ultérieur : Un médecin local confirma l'état d'extrême désorientation et de déshydratation sévère dont souffrait Travis lorsqu'on le retrouva le 10 novembre. Le récit de Travis Walton est conforme à ceux des autres témoins, y compris le témoignage sous hypnose. Pour l'expert qui mena le test, Travis croyait dire la vérité.).

Travis Walton a tout oublié sur le coup, mais sa mémoire lui reviendra petit à petit, sans qu'il soit soumis à l'hypnose, contrairement à ce qui a été affirmé sur certains sites. Il racontera ceci : après avoir perdu connaissance sur la route, il se réveilla dans une pièce, allongé sur une table, entouré de trois créatures d'1,50 m de haut qu'il décrira comme ressemblant à des fœtus, avec la peau presque blanche, portant des robes longues bien ajustées de couleur brunes. Pris de panique, il repoussa violemment les trois créatures qui sortirent et il entreprit de sortir à son tour.
Il entreprend alors d'explorer l'ovni. Après avoir parcouru un couloir incurvé, il pénètre dans une salle circulaire. Au centre, il voit un fauteuil. A mesure que Travis s'en approche, la lumière s'atténue. Il distingue alors au-dessus de sa tête une voûte étoilée, s'assoit sur le siège face à une sorte de tableau de bord et commence à essayer de le manipuler, faisant parfois réagir l'engin. Un humanoïde d'assez grande taille, équipé d'un casque, entre alors dans la pièce, lui adresse un sourire et le conduit dans une autre partie du vaisseau - lequel se révèle beaucoup plus grand que Travis ne l'avait imaginé (on peut supposer ici qu'il n'est plus dans le premier vaisseau mais a été transféré de vaisseau pendant son inconscience). Apercevant plusieurs soucoupes réunies dans une vaste salle, il suppose qu'il est à bord d'un "vaisseau-mère". Il se retrouve finalement dans une autre salle, de dimensions plus réduites, où des êtres d'apparence humaine sont rassemblés. Il y a une femme parmi eux, mais tous se ressemblent comme des jumeaux. A cet instant, les visiteurs cosmiques endorment Travis, qui ne réussira pas, par la suite, à se souvenir de ce qui s'est passé après. Lorsqu'il revint à lui, il eut juste le temps de voir l'OVNI disparaître... Pour lui donc, peu de temps s'était passé, alors qu'il a été absent plusieurs jours en réalité...
Travis a également réalisé le test du détecteur de mensonge avec la même personne que pour ses cinq camarades, et sa sincérité fut également reconnue.
A priori, Les premiers ufologues sur les lieux sont le Dr. Lester Stewart du GSW et le professeur Allen Hynek, représentant alors le CUFOS, qui interrogent la famille Walton alors que Travis est encore disparu. L'attitude de la famille, qui aurait déjà eu des expériences avec des OVNIs, et le fait qu'ils ne semblent pas inquiets, fait que Hynek a de forts doutes "instinctifs" envers ce cas.
- La famille Walton dans son ensemble a eut une histoire continue avec les ovnis. Les garçons Walton ont signalé avoir fait 10 à 15 observations d'ovnis distinctes (très élevé, certes !). Lorsque Duane a été interrogé sur la disparition de son frère, il a déclaré que "Travis sera retrouvé, que les ovnis sont amicaux." Le GSW a objecté : "Comment savez-vous que Travis sera retrouvé ?". Duane a dit "J'ai un pressentimment, un fort pressentiment." Le GSW a demandé "Si les 'capteurs' de l'ovni vont rendre Travis, aurez-vous un appareil photo pour immortaliser ce grand événement ?" Duane, "Non, si j'ai un appareil photo 'ils' ne le rendront pas." - Notons tout de même que cela ne prouve rien, ni dans un sens, ni dans l'autre, de ressentir des choses...
La mère des Walton n'a pas démontré une émotion débordante lors de la "perte" de Travis. Elle a dit que les ovnis ne feront pas de mal à son fils, qu'il sera rendu et que des ovnis ont été vus par sa famille de nombreuses fois. Idem, cela peut être logique si une famille est "privilégiée" avec ce type de phénomène, tout comme il semble avoir existé dans le passé des familles de "sorciers" ou de guérisseurs, radiesthésistes, etc...

Les Waltons ont "vendu" leur histoire au National Enquirer et l'histoire a été complètement déformée de la vérité. Tous les témoins ayant subi des ragots, soupçons de drogues, d'alcool ou autres, d'avoir eu leur vie bouleversée, est-il anormal de vouloir avoir quelques bons côtés financiers ? Sûrement pas...
L'enquête sera longue et difficile et les expertises contradictoires. Walton et ses amis seront, des années durant, tournés en ridicule et accusés de supercherie. On dira que Walton fut sous l'empire d'une drogue (canabis), qu'il avait halluciné (alors qu'il n'a jamais fumé et le canabis ne provoque pas d'hallucinations !). Lui et ces compagnons seront soumis au détecteur de mensonges, à des interrogatoires croisés, qui ne permettront pas d'infirmer leur témoignage, à aucun moment...
Depuis 1975, aucun de ces hommes n'a changé sa version des faits, et c'est en 1993 que C. Y. Gilson eut l'opportunité de faire passer le test du polygraphe au dernier de la bande, Allen Dalis à propos de l'enlèvement de Travis par un OVNI. Le résultat fut conforme à ceux obtenus avec les collègues d'Allen Dalis.
On rappelle qu'il est impossible que sept personnes puissent tromper un détecteur de mensonge sur une même histoire, d'où le grand intérêt des médias pour cette dernière. Néanmoins, un détecteur de mensonge ne fait qu'indiquer la sincérité de celui qui y est soumis, c'est-à-dire si ce dernier est convaincu de ses dires ; il ne prouve en rien leur véracité (même si c'est tout de même un fort indicateur).
Travis Walton écrivit un livre sur cette affaire, The Walton experience, qui fut publié en 1978 et réédité en 1996 sous le titre Fire in the Sky.
Un long-métrage également intitulé Fire in the Sky (Visiteurs extraterrestres en français) et librement inspiré de ces événements fut réalisé en 1993 par Robert Lieberman. A part l'enlèvement même dont l'horreur est exagérée dans le film, le livre est bien respecté...
Il est important de noter que le NICAP, organisme auto-proclamé d'enquêtes sur les OVNI, enquêta sur cette affaire et conclut à un canular orchestré par Travis Walton et son frère Duane, en affirmant avoir en sa possession des pièces de loupés non déclarés de tests de détecteurs de mensonges, mais sans réellement les montrer officiellement ni les avoir fait formellement authentifiées par des instances "neutres". De plus, Ryan Somers, dans son livre " The Blue Planet Project " soupçonne fortement le NICAP (et d'autres organismes d'ufologues) d'être très infiltré par la NSA afin de discréditer au mieux certains témoignages ou affaires "crédibles"... difficile donc de faire la part des choses en final, et comme souvent sur la plupart des affaires UFO, et cela semble bien voulu... il s'agit d'interventionisme de sécurité et non de "complot" donc, même si le résultat apparaît comme fortement anti-démocratique...

DENVER – The object first appeared to be a shooting star, the Littleton man told U.S. Airforce investigators in 1951, but then suddenly changed course and color as it drifted off into the horizon and ultimately disappeared.
Bill Johnson’s encounter in the Four-Corners area is just one of thousands of bizarre sightings documented in a recently declassified government report related to Unidentified Flying Objects. A trove of more than 130,000 pages of UFO records, known as Project Blue Book, hit the internet last year.
After the infamous alleged alien landing in Roswell, New Mexico, in July 1947, the US Air Force investigated 12,618 sightings from 1947 to 1969, and many of those cases occurred in Colorado.
The following are some of the notable cases from our state profiled in Project Blue Book:
If you work at Pikes Peak, you are probably used to the stunning view and can easily identify points of interest, but three employees of the Pikes Peak Railway viewed something on a spring day in 1947 that they couldn’t quite explain.
The report states the three employees were on their lunch break when the crew spotted a silver object in the sky. The object appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed. The men were certain the object was not a conventional aircraft, the report reads. The craft stayed in the area for several minutes, maneuvering in ways no other known aircraft could move.
You can’t get a more credible witness than Sam T. Taylor, the Democratic Floor Leader of the Colorado State Senate in 1955. He pops up in the report for the strange encounter in La Veta on Nov. 25 of that year.
Investigators interviewed Taylor at the State Capitol. He told them he saw a barrel-shaped object with a large front-end. The object was greenish-blue in color and appeared jelly-like. The object was silent and flew ten miles before it disappeared over Mt. Mestas. He estimated the speed of the object to be about half the speed of a meteorite.
The biggest movie of the summer in 1954 was The Egyptian, and the best place to take in a film during that time was at the Drive-in. That is what one Aurora man was doing when he came across several flying objects on an August night in Lakewood (Edgewater now).
The man said he saw “flying saucers” at the Lakeshore Drive-in at 1701 Sheridan Blvd. (where a King Soopers shopping center is now). The man said he saw a flying object fly north in the vicinity of Stapleton Airfield. Fifteen minutes later, up to 12 objects were seen flying at a high-rate of speed toward Stapleton.

What happens when you work at an airforce base and report a UFO? You end up in Project Blue Book. Hopefully, he didn’t end up on any other government list.
That’s how Theodore Mahoney ended up in this report. He was a flight instructor at the old Lowry Airforce Base in Denver. On Aug. 20, 1949, he reported seeing a flying disk from his backyard at 2801 West Dartmouth Street. The object was traveling at a high-rate of speed west from where he stood. The object maintained a steady flight path until it disappeared over the horizon.
The report notes that Mahoney was well acquainted with aircraft of the era, but he didn’t recognize the oval-shaped object flying over his southwest Denver home.
They used to own the Alpine Café in Walsenburg, but this couple wasn’t serving up the soup of the day when the encountered this strange light in the sky.
The couple said they spotted a cigarette-shaped object creating a strange vapor trail. The object was white in color and glowing at the top. The couple told investigators that the object was moving too slow to be a jet. The UFO disappeared over Mt. Baldy.

There are UFO sightings everyday, but they aren’t the kind you imagine.
Instead of alien spaceships flying high in the sky, we’re talking about Futuro Houses: UFO-shaped prefab homes originally built in the late 1960s. These rare homes are located all around the world, from Los Angeles to Antarctica and from New Jersey to Estonia.
According to TheFuturoHouse.com—an extensive website dedicated to documenting the unique structures—at least 80 to 100 Futuros were manufactured, some were destroyed, and a handful are still waiting to be discovered.
But around 64 of the UFO houses are scattered in different countries, still standing and causing locals and visitors alike to do a double take. After all, it’s not often that you see a real-life UFO.
Why were the Futuro Houses built and what do the insides look like? In honor of this unique structure, we’ve answered these questions and rounded up the best photos from across the world.

History and design
In the late 1960s, Dr. Jaakko Hiidenkari commissioned Finnish architect Matti Suuronen to design a ski chalet that could be relocated from central Finland to elsewhere. Hiidenkari wanted a structure that would heat quickly and could be built easily on rough terrain.
The solution? Suuronen took inspiration from the space-obsessed 1960s and designed an elliptical house on a metal frame; To any observer it looked exactly like a flying saucer.
Inside, a lack of right angles meant everything took place in-the-round, from the built-in seating to the windows. You entered the Futuro through a hatch—another element that cemented the intergalactic comparison—and the structure featured a bedroom, bathroom, fireplace, and living room.
An electric heating system allowed the house to be heated from -20 degrees Fahrenheit to 60 degrees Fahrenheit in only 30 minutes. In all, the Futuro House could sleep up to eight people, most in the round living room that featured a central fireplace.

According to The Futuro House, Suuronen’s design was originally manufactured in Finland and later licensed for manufacture in other countries. It used cheap materials—fiberglass reinforced with plastic—and the building’s 16 prefab pieces could be mass-produced, transported to a building site, and bolted together with relative ease. Once at their final location, the capsule house stood on raised legs—adaptable to almost any terrain—built on four concrete piers.
The first Futuros cost $14,000. And the capsule’s innovative design held appeal beyond ski resorts. The Futuro Corporation that built the lightweight houses believed that the prefab structures could be a low-cost, easy-to-assemble housing solution in any environment.
Unfortunately, the 1973 oil crisis increased the cost of plastic—a key ingredient—and made the Futuro almost three times more expensive. Higher costs limited production and doomed the Futuro to the dust bin of history as an architectural oddity, instead of an affordable housing solution.

Where are they now?
A big part of the Futuro’s appeal was in its ease of transport. So it’s not surprising that, despite the Futuro’s limited production, the structures still ended up all over the world.
Since the early 1970s, Futuro Houses have mostly been transported in sections, by road, and then assembled on site. But there are also documented cases of a Futuro being airlifted by helicopter or transported by road fully assembled.
While some Futuros have been abandoned, others—like this turquoise version that sits on the roof of the Central Saint Martins college in London—have been lovingly restored by artists or architecture lovers. At times, a Futuro will even pop up for sale on eBay.
The Futuro House website has mapped all of the known locations of Futuros. At least 15 of them are still standing in the United States, and there are quite a few of the capsule buildings in Europe, New Zealand, and Australia. The most unique locations with confirmed Futuros are Antarctica (with two of the houses) and Japan (with one building).

UFO 'chases passenger jet' through the sky as baffled witness releases video in a bid to find explanation
The witness said they felt both 'excited and anxious' as they watched the bizarre light fly almost alongside they jet

Bizarre footage appears to have captured the moment a UFO appears to chase a passenger jet through the sky.
The incident was caught on camera by a baffled resident in the US who has recently uploaded the footage in a bid to get some answers.
The witness told the Mutual UFO Network : "I am told that military pilots train in the mountains around where I live and I’ve always enjoyed seeing them fly through.
"This happens all the time. Jets and helicopters are a common sighting. So I naturally saw the jet and did a double take, because there was something following it.”

"I knew it wasn’t a jet because it was actually right behind one. The jet it was chasing left a long contrail behind it, but the UFO did not. The UFO was gaining on the jet.
"No helicopter could do that. I was blown away and luckily got out my phone in time to take a video. I watched the object gaining on the jet for about 10 seconds when I lost them in the trees.”
The witness described feeling both 'excited and anxious' at the sighting.

They claimed that the object was very difficult to dismiss as a weather balloon or other aircraft.
After the initial sighting, the witness claims they then saw three more jets and one helicopter flying in the same direction as the UFO.
The witness claims the original sighting was at 7pm on April 21, 2016, in Lincoln, a town in New Hampshire in the US.
And now they want more information: "I would like to show the video to an aviation expert and maybe get an explanation. I’m uploading to MUFON hoping for answers.”

In 2016 a video of a massive disc-shaped object was seen flying around the skies of Malaysia. Many were left in shock at what appeared to be a rare UFO sighting in the Southeast Asian country, but some recent investigations have now uncovered the truth behind the video.
The video was originally posted on YouTube in September 2016 and has more than 590,000 views as of this writing. In the video - which can be seen below - an object can be seen gliding in the sky before it zips away. It then returns a few seconds later turning on its axis to the amazement of onlookers. Judging from the video, it is easy to see why they are all in awe of what they are witnessing as a stream of white light can be seen coming from the flying saucer.
It was then shared all across Malaysia and caused quite a stir among the residents of the town of Kuala Krai, the place where the flying saucer was spotted. However, the video seems to have been created using CGI (computer generated imagery). To be more precise the CGI creation was based off on one that was created in 2007. According to the Malaysian news agency Bernama, the police had reported no such sightings in the area.
The video titled "UFO CGI Unveiled" was uploaded by a YouTube user named Damien White in 2007. In the video he explains how the alien ship is created using computer graphics. The Malaysian UFO video looked so realistic that it even newspapers such as The Sun began to report it. UFO sightings in Malaysia aren't uncommon as there have been many of them over the years. As a matter of fact, news of one that was spotted in Georgetown, Penang was recently reported by The Star.
Blink-182's Tom DeLonge to publish book about UFOs
Former band member’s forthcoming non-fiction book, Sekret Machines: Gods, is ‘designed to shake people up, to make them question their assumptions’

In the wake of a complicated public split from a famous pop-punk group, many musicians might make their first step into book publishing a tell-all autobiography. Not for former Blink-182 member Tom DeLonge, whose book about UFOs will be out on 7 March.
DeLonge co-wrote the non-fiction book, Sekret Machines: Gods, with the occult expert Peter Levenda. It is based on interviews with intelligence officers, scientists, engineers and military officials. According to a press release, it will be “an eye-opening investigative journey to the heart of the UFO phenomenon”, as well as transcending “the speculation of journalists, historians and others whose conclusions are often either misinformed or only tease around the edges”.
“Sekret Machines: Gods is the opening salvo on the complacency of human institutions where the UFO Phenomenon is concerned,” says Levenda. “It’s designed to shake people up, to make them question their assumptions.”
DeLonge said Levenda’s expertise aided the project: “It was his ability to frame an esoteric thesis that gave me the ammunition to speak clearly on the subject matter, and that got me in the door.”
According to Rolling Stone, DeLonge has been interviewing aerospace industry officials, the US Department of Defense and Nasa. “It’s very hard to think, ‘How did this guy in a band get access like that?’” he said. “It sounds crazy. But it’s because I can speak to a very specific audience. I earned their trust. I knew my material.”
The Blink-182 founding member announced his departure from the group and confirmed details of his publishing project. At the time of the split, the guitarist defended his decision to not record new music with Blink-182, saying that the “Blink stuff went haywire” because a new contract with the band conflicted with his plans to record a soundtrack to accompany fiction he was planning to publish. DeLonge disputed the account of the split given by band’s manager.
Sekret Machines is DeLonge’s first non-fiction book. He has co-authored a number of novels, one of which – Sekret Machines: Chasing Shadows – covered similar alien-based themes as his forthcoming book. DeLonge is also reportedly to direct a sci-fi film titled Strange Things, about a group of San Diego skateboarders who investigate UFO phenomenon.

“It was a daytime sighting — I saw this orb that was zipping around. I followed it, and accidentally hit a guy backing up on a side street. I bumped him, and I hopped out, saying, ‘Oh my God, I’m so sorry! I was watching this UFO,’ and he looked up at it and said, ‘You know what, never mind.’”
She grins as she finishes her story: “So I decided that from now on if I get into another car accident, I’ll just point up at the sky and say, ‘Oh, I saw something.’”
Gadd is the co-host of Aliens With Gass, Phoenix’s number-one (and only) radio program devoted to all things extraterrestrial and rock ’n’ roll. The weekly radio program offers a platform for her and her co-host, longtime radio personality Kevin Gassman, to talk about their shared passion for aliens and UFO phenomena. It also offers an outlet for listeners who’ve had their own close encounters to hear that they aren’t alone.
“I think a lot of people don’t want to admit they have an interest in this,” Gassman explains. “But when we tell them we do an alien show, nine times out of 10, someone will come up to me afterward and say that they saw something.”
Both of the hosts have had personal experiences dealing with the unknown: Gadd, who grew up out in the desert, has seen scores of UFOs; Gassman recalls seeing one in his youth.
“When I was 19, I saw something in the sky — it was three black triangles in a triangle formation, way high up in the sky. It left an indelible mark in my brain,” he says.
When Gassman speaks, you can hear all 20 of the years he’s spent on the radio. His voice is perfectly tuned for broadcasting, sounding wry and articulate. It’s a voice that anyone who’s tuned into 93.9 KWSS for the last decade would instantly recognize. It was while doing his long-running Driving With Gass program on KWSS that the idea of doing a rock ’n’ aliens radio show first materialized.
Guest speakers on the show include people Fox Mulder would deem a "true believer."

“I met Heidi a few years back. She contacted me out of the blue, and introduced me to Ken Koshio, who’s a Japanese drummer and performer,” Gassman says.
“Ken and I were doing a show together, and we needed to do something on the radio to promote it,” Gadd adds. It was during that radio segment where the two discovered their on-air chemistry and mutual interest in aliens. “I was watching a lot of Ancient Aliens at the time,” Gassman says with a laugh.
Gassman and Gadd started doing a weekly segment on aliens on Driving With Gass on Thursdays, closing out his afternoon show with an hour devoted to all things otherworldly.
The show stopped in March 2016, but a good radio bit is a lot like a chestburster exploding out of the ribcage of a space colonist — you just can’t keep it down. The duo returned to the airwaves in August on 99.1 FM in the East Valley, and it was then that they started to do Aliens With Gass consistently. It was also when they started making music a bigger part of the program.
“One of the things that started it was a song by a local band called the Wiley One, ‘UFO Man,’” Gassman explains. “It started me down this rabbit hole of music.”
Gassman dug back through the history of pop music to find songs about aliens, discovering some surprises along the way. “We found this Ella Fitzgerald record that has a song on it called ‘Two Little Men In A Flying Saucer.’ It’s from 1951, four years after Roswell.”
The history of pop music is intertwined with aliens, in more ways than one. Iconic bands like the Rolling Stones, the Byrds, and the Kinks have all crafted odes to aliens. It would be impossible to conceive of Bowie or T-Rex without them. The spooky theremin sounds that added a sci-fi touch to countless novelty records, Joe Meek’s outer space productions, Danzig howling about astro-zombies and teenagers from Mars, the Pixies singing about abductions and motorways to Roswell, Kool Keith’s alter egos, Sun Ra, P-Funk on their mothership, Blink-182’s Tom DeLonge leaving his band to chase after aliens and co-author books with conspiracy theorists — space is a place in which pop culture feels right at home.
Each episode of Aliens With Gass is laced with music to help lighten the mood. “People come on to talk about their experiences with aliens, and sometimes it can get really heavy,” Gadd says.
Their show alternates between talking about news bits and interesting pieces of UFO lore with interviewing local personalities, musicians, and well-known figures in the UFO community like Travis Walton (whose extraterrestrial experience inspired the film Fire in the Sky) and NASA whistleblower Ken Johnston (who claimed that Apollo 17 received an ominous alien message while leaving the moon: “Don’t come back — you’re not ready yet”).
It may seem odd at first that a state as conservative as Arizona could produce a show like Aliens With Gass, but the Valley of the Sun has been a haven for high weirdness. While the Phoenix Lights incident in 1997 and Walton’s abduction near Snowflake in 1975 are the most famous examples of the paranormal in Arizona, our state’s history is full of UFO sightings and cryptozoological stories.
This strange history isn’t lost on Gassman and Gadd, who make a point to talk about local lore and events on their shows. Even if something seems outlandish or too bizarre to be believed, they’re willing to hear it out. Gassman gleefully shares a story he’s heard recently about an observatory near Tucson. “It’s owned by the Vatican. It’s near Tucson off Grand Mountain. The reason why they have it, allegedly, is that they’re looking for an alien savior.”
Stories like these bring up the obvious question: How much of this do Gassman and Gadd believe? “I want to believe it’s real,” Gassman says. “There’s got to be something better than where we’re at right now.” While both hosts believe in the existence of aliens and their coming to Earth, they remain refreshingly skeptical and open-minded about their favorite subject.
“We’ll call out BS when we hear it,” Gassman says.
Gadd chimes in: “There are so many people out there who put out fake stuff on purpose, so we have to be very mindful of that.”
One of the things they address on their show, which makes it a compelling listen, is they talk about the tension that that desire can bring: the risk that wanting something to be true can warp our perception of reality.
“Remember the demon that was spotted in Phoenix? Why did they think it was a demon? Because people want it to be a demon. They want to see it, they want to believe in something other than this planet, something otherworldly,” Gadd muses.
“But then you have to wonder why demons don’t appear on pieces of toast? That’s the Virgin Mary’s territory: trees and toast,” Gassman interjects.
Both radio hosts are optimistic that the truth about aliens will eventually be revealed, and that the news that we’re not alone in the universe could spark a desperately needed renaissance for our species.
“When aliens show up, it’s going to transcend everything that’s happened on this planet,” Gassman says. “Regardless of your gender, your race — it’s going to change the dynamic of how we live. It’s a serious thing; we have to be aware of it.”
Gadd nods in agreement, ending the conversation on a hopeful note.
“I think it would stop wars — that’s the hippie in me talking. I think people would learn to love each other, and realize that we’re all just a speck of stardust, man.”

Tegen het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden in Duitsland bouwtekeningen voor vliegende schotels gevonden.
De Duitse ingenieur Georg Klein stelde volgens de CIA dat er in 1941 al in Duitse vliegtuigfabrieken werd gewerkt aan vliegende schotels.
Eerste testvlucht
Klein, die zei dat hij werkzaam was voor het ministerie van Albert Speer, was op 14 februari 1945 in Praag om de eerste testvlucht van een vliegende schotel te aanschouwen.
Tijdens het experiment bereikte het vaartuig binnen drie minuten een hoogte van 12.400 meter en een snelheid van 2200 kilometer per uur.
De topsnelheid van de schotels bedroeg volgens de ingenieur 4000 kilometer per uur.

Syrië
In Frans-Equatoriaal-Afrika werden op 22 november 1952 vier vliegende schotels gezien. Een priester genaamd Carlos Maria zag die avond vier grote schijven roerloos in lucht hangen.
“Ze hadden een zilverachtige kleur zoals de maan,” zei de priester. “Vlak voordat ze alle vier begonnen te bewegen lichtten ze op als zonnen.”
De CIA wijst daarnaast op een bericht dat op 19 mei 1953 in de Syrische krant Al Ahaya verscheen en waarin wordt gesteld dat er vliegende schotels waren gezien boven de stad Homs.
Iran
De objecten kwamen volgens de krant vanuit het zuiden.
Een dag daarvoor, op 18 mei 1953, werd een oplichtend object gezien in de lucht boven de Iraanse stad Abadan.
Het object ‘was net zo fel als de zon en had de vorm van een nieuwe maan’. Hetzelfde object werd gezien boven de olievelden in Khuzestan, aldus de krant.
Een man rijdt enkele dagen geleden ’s avonds in de Amerikaanse staat Missouri als hij naar de kant van de weg wordt gedirigeerd door politieauto’s met zwaailichten.
Er volgen nog meerdere politieauto’s en dan opeens verschijnt er een vrachtwagen met een dieplader die de hele breedte van de weg in beslag neemt en de mond van de man valt open van verbazing.
Scott C. Waring is een man die zich ongeveer 24 uur per dag bezighoudt met UFO-waarnemingen en ook rapporten van over de hele wereld ontvangt.
Niet zo vreemd dat er af en toe foutjes sluipen in zijn berichtgeving zoals gisteren toen hij verslag deed over een UFO-transport dat door twee onafhankelijke getuigen zou zijn waargenomen in de Amerikaanse staat Missouri.
Als voorbeeld voegt hij dan een aantal foto’s en video’s bij en zegt dat hoewel het transport is gesignaleerd in Missouri dit dan wel onderweg zal zijn naar het beruchte Area 51 in Nevada.
Ik reed gisteravond (1 februari 2017) op de I-44 noord. Om precies tien uur vijftien zag ik een rij politieauto’s over een afstand van bijna twee kilometer richting zuiden gaan. Ik zag meer politieauto’s met zwaailichten die het verkeer tegenhielden. Tussen de politieauto’s reed een vrachtauto met een dieplader. Toen die dichterbij kwam, kon ik mijn ogen niet geloven want wat die vervoerde, leek precies op een vliegende schotel.
De vrachtauto passeerde mij op een afstand van ongeveer 30 meter en ging in tegenovergestelde richting en reed niet al te snel. Het geheel was min of meer een beetje verlicht en mijn auto wat verhoogd zodat ik duidelijk zicht had. Het was een dof metalen grijs object, met korte dikke poten die onder vanuit het midden kwamen. Het centrale gedeelte was vrij dik en werd steeds smaller aan de rand. Het was zo groot dat het helemaal over de oplegger uitstak. Ik zag geen cockpit of ramen of andere markeringen.

Bovenstaande beelden zijn afkomstig uit een video waarvan Scott zegt dat die laat zien wat de man in Missouri zag en dat er dus twee onafhankelijke getuigen dit transport hebben gezien en dat het dan wel onderweg zal zijn naar Area51.
Wat Scott niet heeft gezien, is dat de man die de video publiceerde deze heeft gekopieerd van een oudere video van bijna twee jaar geleden. De originele video waar de beelden uit komen is al gemaakt op 21 maart 2015 en ook niet in Missouri, maar in Nevada, wat wel weer de staat is waarin ook Area51 ligt. Kortom, het zijn niet twee onafhankelijke getuigen die hetzelfde tegelijkertijd hebben gezien, maar het zijn wel een aantal getuigen die hetzelfde fenomeen hebben waargenomen op andere dagen en op verschillende locaties.
Daarmee blijft natuurlijk de vraag overeind wat de Amerikanen hier nu precies vervoeren en waarom.

As propulsion technology advances, humanity will be able to reach farther into space, subsequently deepening our understanding of the universe in which we live.
THE POWER OF PROPULSION
Space has always been a frontier where we expect the most advanced technologies and the most brilliant innovations to be employed. But for all that expectation, development has seemed to have stalled in one area: propulsion.
Here is a rundown of the technology that will be pushing the boundaries of space propulsion very soon.
1. CHEMICALS ROCKETS
Ah, the good old liquid fuels. A staple since the advent of the space age, these fuels have been in development for 90 years already. But even after all that time, chemical fuels are still around and will be for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, we’ve done about all we can to make traditional chemical propulsion methods as efficient as possible.
We’ll need to develop more advanced chemical systems that make use of high energy density propellants and more advanced engine cycles if we want to use chemical propulsion for longer-term missions that would require a higher thrust-to-weight ratio. If we do make it to Mars using this propulsion methods, we will likely see astronauts splicing polar ice caps for hydrogen fuel to make the trip back home.
2. ELECTROTHERMAL
More commonly associated with thrusters that orient rather than propel, these engines create super-heated plasma using electrical energy and push it through a supersonic nozzle. They’re ideal for longer missions as they don’t require the storage of volatile chemicals, and they are also fairly simple to make.
Since the 1970s, electrothermal engines have been used in Russian satellites, so we’ve had plenty of time to improve the technology. However, because they produce a very low level of thrust, they don’t have as many potential uses as some of the other propulsion methods.

3. ION DRIVE
A low-thrust, long-term design, ion drives work by ionizing unreactive fuels (such as xenon), accelerating them using electrical fields, and then shooting them out into space. They are very slow at picking up speed, but can deliver 10 times as much thrust as a chemical rocket in the long run.
This type of propulsion has already been used on a number of spacecraft, including dozens of Earth-orbiting satellites and ones that have traveled as far as dwarf planet Ceres, so we know that they can work. Unfortunately, they do require a huge amount of electricity, which is typically provided by solar cells or a nuclear reaction.
NASA is currently working on several new systems, including the NASA Evolutionary Xenon Thruster (NEXT) and the Annular Engine, so this type of propulsion will be used to help us explore space even more frequently in the future.
4. SOLAR SAILS
The ability of light to produce force was first discovered in 1873, and this innovative propulsion method works by having photons push a solar sail, thus propelling a craft forward. It would eliminate the need for heavy fuels or bulky engines, and the technique has already been proven effective by the LightSail project and Japan’s IKAROS project.
However, building the huge solar-relays such a system would need isn’t easy, and the farther away from the Sun this type of rocket travels, the less efficient the system becomes. Some have proposed using a massive laser to propel a spacecraft in the direction of a nearby star, but those designs are still very much in the planning stages.

5. PLASMA PROPULSION ENGINE
A variation on ion drive technology, this engine has magnetic currents and electrical potentials that accelerate ions in plasma to generate thrust. Despite the concept being more than half-a-century old, no one has yet to launch a spacecraft with this type of propulsion system beyond our atmosphere.
However, the Ad Astra Rocket company in Texas is currently working on the VASIMR, the world’s biggest plasma propulsion engine prototype. They predict that such a system could make the trip to Mars in just 39 days.

6. THERMAL FISSION
Some may say an extension of the nuclear obsession, this engine would use conventional fission to heat a propellant and generate thrust. The NERVA was a Nixon-era rocket that’s based on this idea, but it was scrapped before off-Earth testing could be done. Such propulsion systems have been tested on the ground, though.
This type of system would allow for very short trip times to Mars or other destinations, but we must first figure out a way to design a reactor that reaches the necessary temperatures with minimum erosion and that meets all environmental standards set by the government when tested on the ground.

7. CONTINUOUS FUSION
Fusion propulsion involves compressing electrically charged particles and then accelerating them to the speed of light before they are forced out of the rocket’s propulsion system. It is a highly researched propulsion method, and for good reason — such a system would cut the amount of travel time to Mars in half.
Fusion-powered rockets effectively try to recreate the power of the Sun by super-heating fuel to hundreds of millions of degrees until the atomic nuclei fuse, and generate even more energy.
A fusion rocket would be hundreds of times more efficient than the best chemical rocket. But a continuous fusion enginer hinges on achieving a net output from a fusion reactor, something that several decades of research, and a few billion dollars of research funding, have so far failed to do.
8. PULSED FUSION
Perhaps a more achievable way to use fusion power is to control detonation of a miniature fusion bomb to power a craft.
One design, being pursued at the University of Washington, works by dropping a pellet of two hydrogen isotopes, surrounded by metal rings made of lithium, into a combustion chamber.
At the right moment, a huge magnetic field slams the metal rings closed around the pellet, compressing the fuel to incredible pressures, leading to fusion. It’s a bit like how your car engine uses controlled explosions of gasoline.
A grain of sand of this fusion material would the same energy content as four litres of rocket fuel. But a major problem with this research is that actually testing one would likely violate nuclear test ban treaties.
9. NANOSPACECRAFT
Rather than focusing on finding ways to move the spacecraft we currently have, some are focusing on designing crafts that would be easier to propel. Nanospacecraft are much smaller probes and satellites, which means they wouldn’t need the same level of propulsion as their larger counterparts. CubeSats, FemtoSats, and even the idea of the Breakthrough Starshot depend on smaller vessels.
Some of these craft are so small, their engines could fit on a single silicon chip. While they wouldn’t be large enough to transport astronauts, they could help us retrieve data on far away planets or other celestial bodies.

10. ANTIMATTER
The most efficient of any of these designs, an antimatter engine would be able to convert up to 75 percent of fuel mass into energy. It creates this propulsive energy by forcing atomic particles to collide with their antiparticles. The problem is that generating a usable amount of antimatter has not yet been done — so far, we’ve only been able to create it in particle accelerators in amounts that wouldn’t be enough to boil a cup of water, let alone propel us anywhere.
If we are able to find a way to produce the stuff in greater quantities, NASA researchers estimate that just 10 thousandths of a gram could propel a craft to Mars in just 45 days.
Science fiction has long imagined alien worlds inhabited by silicon-based life, such as the rock-eating Horta from the original Star Trek series. Now, scientists have for the first time shown that nature can evolve to incorporate silicon into carbon-based molecules, the building blocks of life on Earth.

As for the implications these findings might have for alien chemistry on distant worlds, “my feeling is that if a human being can coax life to build bonds between silicon and carbon, nature can do it too,” said the study’s senior author Frances Arnold, a chemical engineer at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. The scientists detailed their findings recently in the journal Science.
Carbon is the backbone of every known biological molecule. Life on Earth is based on carbon, likely because each carbon atom can form bonds with up to four other atoms simultaneously. This quality makes carbon well-suited to form the long chains of molecules that serve as the basis for life as we know it, such as proteins and DNA.
Still, researchers have long speculated that alien life could have a completely different chemical basis than life on Earth. For example, instead of relying on water as the solvent in which biological molecules operate, perhaps aliens might depend on ammonia or methane. And instead of relying on carbon to create the molecules of life, perhaps aliens could use silicon.
Carbon and silicon are chemically very similar in that silicon atoms can also each form bonds with up to four other atoms simultaneously. Moreover, silicon is one of the most common elements in the Universe. For example, silicon makes up almost 30 percent of the mass of the Earth’s crust, and is roughly 150 times more abundant than carbon in the Earth’s crust.
Scientists have long known that life on Earth is capable of chemically manipulating silicon. For instance, microscopic particles of silicon dioxide called phytoliths can be found in grasses and other plants, and photosynthetic algae known as diatoms incorporate silicon dioxide into their skeletons. However, there are no known natural instances of life on Earth combining silicon and carbon together into molecules.
Still, chemists have artificially synthesized molecules comprised of both silicon and carbon. These organo-silicon compounds are found in a wide range of products, including pharmaceuticals, sealants, caulks, adhesives, paints, herbicides, fungicides, and computer and television screens. Now, scientists have discovered a way to coax biology to chemically bond carbon and silicon together.
“We wanted to see if we could use what biology already does to expand into whole new areas of chemistry that nature has not yet explored,” Arnold said.
The researchers steered microbes into creating molecules never before seen in nature through a strategy known as ‘directed evolution,’ which Arnold pioneered in the early 1990s. Just as farmers have long modified crops and livestock by breeding generations of organisms for the traits they want to appear, so too have scientists bred microbes to create the molecules they desire.
Scientists have used directed evolutionary strategies for years to create household goods such as detergents, and to develop environmentally-friendly ways to make pharmaceuticals, fuels and other industrial products. (Conventional chemical manufacturing processes can require toxic chemicals; in contrast, directed evolutionary strategies use living organisms to create molecules and generally avoid chemistry that would prove harmful to life.)
Arnold and her team — synthetic organic chemist Jennifer Kan, bioengineer Russell Lewis, and chemist Kai Chen — focused on enzymes, the proteins that catalyze or accelerate chemical reactions. Their aim was to create enzymes that could generate organo-silicon compounds.
“My laboratory uses evolution to design new enzymes,” Arnold said. “No one really knows how to design them — they are tremendously complicated. But we are learning how to use evolution to make new ones, just as nature does.”

First, the researchers started with enzymes they suspected could, in principle, chemically manipulate silicon. Next, they mutated the DNA blueprints of these proteins in more or less random ways and tested the resulting enzymes for the desired trait. The enzymes that performed best were mutated again, and the process was repeated until the scientists reached the results they wanted.
Arnold and her colleagues started with enzymes known as heme proteins, which all have iron at their hearts and are capable of catalyzing a wide variety of reactions. The most widely recognized heme protein is likely hemoglobin, the red pigment that helps blood carry oxygen.
After testing a variety of heme proteins, the scientists concentrated on one from Rhodothermus marinus, a bacterium from hot springs in Iceland. The heme protein in question, known as cytochrome c, normally shuttles electrons to other proteins in the microbe, but Arnold and her colleagues found that it could also generate low levels of organo-silicon compounds.
After analyzing cytochrome c’s structure, the researchers suspected that only a few mutations might greatly enhance the enzyme’s catalytic activity. Indeed, only three rounds of mutations were enough to turn this protein into a catalyst that could generate carbon-silicon bonds more than 15 times more efficiently than the best synthetic techniques currently available. The mutant enzyme could generate at least 20 different organo-silicon compounds, 19 of which were new to science, Arnold said. It remains unknown what applications people might be able to find for these new compounds.
“The biggest surprise from this work is how easy it was to get new functions out of biology, new functions perhaps never selected for in the natural world that are still useful to human beings,” Arnold said. “The biological world always seems poised to innovate.”
In addition to showing that the mutant enzyme could self-generate organo-silicon compounds in a test tube, the scientists also showed that E. coli bacteria, genetically engineered to produce the mutant enzyme within themselves, could also create organo-silicon compounds. This result raises the possibility that microbes somewhere could have naturally evolved the ability to create these molecules.
“In the universe of possibilities that exist for life, we’ve shown that it is a very easy possibility for life as we know it to include silicon in organic molecules,” Arnold said. “And once you can do it somewhere in the Universe, it’s probably being done.”
It remains an open question why life on Earth is based on carbon when silicon is more prevalent in Earth’s crust. Previous research suggests that compared to carbon, silicon can form chemical bonds with fewer kinds of atoms, and it often forms less complex kinds of molecular structures with the atoms that it can interact with. By giving life the ability to create organo-silicon compounds, future research can test why life here or elsewhere may or may not have evolved to incorporate silicon into biological molecules.
In addition to the astrobiology implications, the researchers noted that their work suggests biological processes could generate organo-silicon compounds in ways that are more environmentally friendly and potentially much less expensive than existing methods of synthesizing these molecules. For example, current techniques for creating organo-silicon compounds often require precious metals and toxic solvents.
The mutant enzyme also makes fewer unwanted byproducts. In contrast, existing techniques typically require extra steps to remove undesirable byproducts, adding to the cost of making these molecules.
“I’m talking to several chemical companies right now about potential applications for our work,” Arnold said. “These compounds are hard to make synthetically, so a clean biological route to produce these compounds is very attractive.”
Future research can explore what advantages and disadvantages the ability to create organo-silicon compounds might have for organisms. “By giving this capability to an organism, we might see if there is, or is not, a reason why we don’t stumble across it in the natural world,” Arnold said.
The research was funded by the National Science Foundation, the Caltech Innovation Initiative program, and the Jacobs Institute for Molecular Engineering for Medicine at Caltech.
Later this week, a dazzling bluish-green comet will streak across the sky. If you manage to wake up early enough, you might be able to spot it.
You’ll recognize it by its unusual bluish-green color and fan-shaped tail. Its color comes from vaporizing diatomic carbon, a gas that glows green. And it has an icy nucleus heated by solar radiation, causing it to spew out brilliant jets of gas.
This comet, called Comet 45P/Honda-Mrkos-Pajdusakova (45P for short) and named after a trio of astronomers who discovered it in 1948, travels into the inner solar system every 5.25 years. You won’t want to miss this opportunity — 45P won’t be as close to Earth again for the rest of this century (although 45P did fly closer to Earth in 2011).
The comet will be nearest to Earth on Saturday, when it comes to within 7.4 million miles from of the planet. Sounds pretty far, but it’s actually a remarkably close shave — you’ll be able to see just with a pair of binoculars.
Speaking of which, if you want to catch a glimpse of 45P, be sure to camp out outside and bring binoculars or a small telescope. Here’s the catch though — you’re going to have to wake up before dawn.
The best time to see it is in the dark hours before sunrise between Thursday and Sunday. Look high into the Eastern sky as the comet zips through the Hercules constellation, and you may be able to catch a glimpse of the fuzzy green comet.

Comet 45P actually passed near the moon on New Year’s Eve. But if you missed it then, you’ve got a better chance this weekend when it flies even closer.

Turns out, the levels of carbon dioxide on early Mars were too low to foster a warm enough red planet where liquid water could exist. Without sufficient carbon dioxide, the planet would have been far too cold to feature a lake environment 3.5 billion years ago. And yet, we know that Mars had ancient lakes! Scientists are baffled by the new findings, published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Before the research team at NASA’s Ames Research Center found otherwise, we always thought carbon dioxide was crucial to keeping a planet warm enough to be potentially habitable. Young Mars must have had a decent supply — after all, we know there was liquid water. So if carbon dioxide levels back then were too low to keep the water temperature above freezing, what else could have been doing it?
“That’s really tricky, and we don’t have a very good idea of how that happened,” Thomas Bristow, a research scientist Ames and the paper’s first author, told Inverse by phone. “I can tell you that there are a couple of possibilities.”
Possibility #1:
The lakes could have been covered by a layer of ice that acted as a sort of blanket, preventing the water beneath from freezing or escaping into the atmosphere — sounds reasonable enough. The problem here is that the Curiosity rover hasn’t seen any convincing evidence of this ice cap in the sediment it’s been analyzing. If a sample had been deposited in an icy, glacial environment, it should have a particular set of features, like drop stones (rock fragments that became embedded), ice wedges, or glacial till (a term for a kind of glacial-deposited sediment).
So far, however, we’ve observed nothing.
Possibility #2:
Mars overall has always been extremely cold, but perhaps it was warmer intermittently. Sulfur dioxide released by volcanoes could potentially keep the planet warm for maybe a few hundred or thousand years at a time before it escaped out of the atmosphere and left the planet to cool again. The problem with this theory is that Curiosity has been working its way through hundreds of meters of Gale Crater lake deposits already, which implies the lake was around for hundreds of thousands to millions of years — so that the “transient volcanic model,” as Bristow describes it, doesn’t seem to fit.
Scientists are also looking to the effects of various greenhouse gases for a potential explanation, but essentially there’s no clean answer so far. As [Curiosity] keeps going up Mount Sharp, Bristow and his colleagues will keep observing the sediment and look for clues as to whether there was ice or not.
“The rover is going to keep climbing, and we’re expecting to see changes in climate conditions on Mars being reflected in changes in the rocks as we climb [higher up Mount Sharp],” Bristow said. “So perhaps we go along and build that story well get additional clues into exactly how early Mars was operating.”
This is as good a place as any to bring up the faint young sun paradox — early Earth had liquid water just as early Mars did, and yet the Sun two or four billion years ago should have been too young and faint to produce enough energy for that. The new findings simply deepen the mysteries behind how water and habitable environments developed in the solar system.
We’ve been able to investigate the mystery on Earth by looking at ancient rocks, and on Mars by analyzing images from afar, but one of the very many cool things about Curiosity is that this is the first time we’ve really been able to get on the ground and test ancient rocks on the red planet, too. Now that we can begin comparing that data to the data we’ve gathered from space, maybe we’ll start getting somewhere.

Shape-shifting UFO reportedly deadens sound around witness
An Idaho witness at Idaho Falls reported watching and photographing a fire-colored, shape-shifting object that seemed to silence natural sounds in the area when it passed over, according to testimony in Case 81932 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The witness was inside meditating when a sibling came inside to alert family that an unknown object was moving towards the house.
“While I was getting ready to go outside, my two nephews were already outside, and one of them turned on his phone camera to take video,” the witness stated. “But he said the phone kept giving him an error when trying to take video. He switched to take pictures and he managed to take four images of the object.”

The witness went outside and was informed by the nephews that the object could be seen in the northwest sky.
“I saw the object when it was leaving. It had a very intense red and orange color to it – very bright. My nephew was the one who took the images. He told me the object, before passing over the house,that it remained a sphere shape, but once it passed over the house it started to change shape. He said, ‘The closest thing that this can resemble is one of those light sabers from that movie “StarWars.”’ It had that same effect. It would stretch. It would go from a sphere to a cigar shape and once it passed the house it went back to just being a sphere. He said all around the object there was this wave-like pattern of fire.”

“Everything went super silent while the object passed by – no bird sounds, no wind sound, no car sounds, nothing. Just silence and this effect of sound cancelling was only when the object was passing over the house and everything went back to normal once the object left.”

Enkel in de poolgebieden?
Wetenschappers kunnen zonnewinden voorspellen op basis van de hoeveelheid en frequentie van zonnevlekken. Hoe meer zonnevlekken er te zien zijn, hoe actiever de zon is. Maar zonder intense zonneactiviteit wordt het noorderlicht een uitzonderlijke gebeurtenis, luidt het.
"Het fenomeen van het noorderlicht zou wel eens een exclusieve show voor de poolgebieden kunnen worden", zegt onderzoeker Mathew Owens van de universiteit van Reading. "Door een gebrek aan zonnewinden zal het onzichtbaar zijn op lagere lengtegraden.
Maar minder zonneactiviteit heeft nog meer gevolgen. Als de zon een kalme periode ingaat, wordt het magnetische veld van de aarde zwakker. Aliens arrive on Earth to abduct a man in Puerto Rico and tell of a meteor which is on its way to destroy the Earth.
The first date of initial contract has been reported to be 1988 in Puerto Rico.
This sighting of aliens is one that I ignored since I know that many individuals have been abducted, and none of these abductees have been comprehensively identified. It is also likely that due to misunderstandings these individuals have tried to hide their experiences from all others, but this person in Puerto Rico appears to be an exception to the rule. He has reported it and managed to take photos of military jets flying in the vicinity of the UFO while it took off.
An interesting question then arises. Why is it that a person from Puerto Rico who claimed he was abducted by aliens know about the New World Order way back in 1988? A man named Amaury Rivera Toro who we will nickname 'Rivera'--stated that he came into contact with aliens in Puerto Rico on May 14, 1988.
Rivera managed to be interviewed in 1991 by Jim Cunningham during the First International UFO Conference at the Riveria Hotel in Las Vegas. He spoke about his alien abduction mentioning the aliens as half-human demon-like beings who used holographic projections. Rivera then produced photos of a UFO and a fighter jet.
Interesting, if we were to believe in Biblical prophecies, we would consider if the aliens that Rivera encountered were demons and fallen angels or if the hologram he saw was truly a vision of a post-Apocalyptic future like the New World Order agenda.
It will take more investigations to uncover the truth, but it is fascinating to see more evidence appearing regarding alien sightings.
REMAINS OF A SIXTEEN-FOOT -TALL GIANT FOUND ON MALAYSIAN ISLAND
Working at a large grave site in Pulau Upeh, a small island off the coast of Malacca in Malaysia, Mohd Fuad and his assistant Azman Wahab recently unearthed colossal human skeleton remains .
Reports state that they have found massive graves, and deep inside the island's caves have discovered gigantic bone fragments so large the person would've stood 3-5 meters (10-16 feet) tall. Now they say they want the Malaysian government to invest in the excavation of these caves to reveal the true history of the island.
EVIDENCE FOR GIANT HUMANS FOUND IN SOUTH EAST ASIA
'Island gigantism' is a known phenomenon and the cause of many of the world's giant animals. The Corsican Giant Shrew on the French island of Corsica, the Giant Solenodon on Cuba, and the now extinct Moa of New Zealand are just a few examples. The latter was once the largest bird species on the planet standing at around 3.6 meters (12 feet) tall. This gigantism occurs because of the unique ecological environment that islands present in comparison to the mainland. Species often thrive and evolve to become twice or three times their normal height because of a lack of competition or natural predator. It has been observed for many animals and plants, but not humans yet.
Malaysian folklore includes tales of giant humans from the secluded island of Pulau Upeh. Could the same evolutionary process that created the world's giant turtles, rats, and birds also have created giant humans? Have these Malaysians stumbled upon one of the most groundbreaking discoveries of the 21st century? Critics dismissed these claims as fairy-tales that have not to be taken seriously. However, the discovery of these large graves and bones could change all that. Could Pulau Upeh have once been home to a race of humans that would have dwarfed us by comparison?
If it's true, they are no longer alive there. The small and beautiful island is now a relaxing destination for tourists and fisherman. Reported sightings of the giants are all over a hundred years old, and most are far older than that. However, there is growing support for a state-funded excavation of the island's caves to truly understand its history. Others say that it would be unholy to excavate a possible grave site, and so it would be best to leave it untouched.
Like the many other mythical giants from ancient tales, there are actually good theories to support the existence of giant humans. Perhaps one day we will uncover evidence on a remote island of their existence. Until more excavation can be done in Malaysia, the Malaccan Giants will have to remain a myth for now.

I would really like to know what material it was made from to give off such beautiful colors. The eyewitness saw it vanish under the clouds, which is proof that it was a large object in low Earth orbit. I wonder what NASA would have to say about this UFO? China space administration released some new photos of the China lunar rover this week and in one of those photos is a spaceship hovering in the distance. The UFO was found by Secureteam10 of Youtube and as he mentioned, this UFO has a lot similarities to those seen in early Apollo mission photos. Nice clear photo with no visible editing of it. Tornado Hits NASA Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans

A tornado impacted NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans Tuesday (Feb. 7), according to a statement released by the agency.
"At this time, only minor injuries have been reported and NASA employees and other tenants are being accounted for," NASA officials said in the statement. The tornado hit the facility at 11:25 a.m. CST (12:25 p.m. EST/1725 GMT), they adde
NASA posted a video to YouTube that shows cell phone footage of the tornado (taken from afar), as well as footage of the facility after the impact.
"That thing is an awesome thing to look at," one spectator said in the video, referring to the massive grey funnel on the horizon.
"Hopefully, everybody's okay, but it is real bad," said a person taking footage of the facility after the tornado had passed. The video seemed to show damage to buildings and a car flipped over in a parking lot.
"There is still a threat of severe weather in the area and emergency officials are continuing to monitor the situation to ensure the safety of onsite personnel," the statement said. "The onsite Michoud emergency response team is also conducting damage assessments of buildings and facilities."
Currently, the Michoud Assembly Facilityis responsible for manufacturing and assembling the core stage of NASA's next-generation heavy-lift rocket, the Space Launch System (SLS), which is built by Boeing, according to NASA's website. Michoud will also assemble and integrate the SLS main propulsion system, including the RS-25 engines, built by Aerojet Rocketdyne. The facility is also involved in manufacturing large structures and composites for the Orion crew vehicle. Previously, NASA used the facility to assemble the external propulsion tanks for the space shuttle program, as well as Saturn V moon rocket stages.
