Tiny Asteroid-Mining Scouts Could Study Space-Dust Strikes

Tiny Asteroid-Mining Scouts Could Study Space-Dust Strikes
The Meteoroid Impact Detection for Exploration of Asteroids concept mission, or MIDEA, envisions sending tiny robotic scouts to rendezvous with asteroids, then study the material blasted off them by fast-moving space dust.

Watching asteroids get pummeled by fast-moving space dust could reveal a lot about the rocks — including which ones might make good mining targets.

That's the idea behind a mission concept called MIDEA (short for Meteoroid Impact Detection for Exploration of Asteroids), which would launch tiny robotic scouts to rendezvous with asteroids and then study the material that minuscule impactors blast off them.

Such observations could help scientists identify asteroids that harbor resources that exploration missions could exploit, said Nicolas Lee of Stanford University's Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, who presented the MIDEA concept in December at the annual fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) in San Francisco. [Photos: Asteroids in Deep Space]

"We want to help enable the broad exploration of the solar system for ISRU," Lee told Space.com at the AGU meeting. (ISRU is short for "in situ resource utilization" — a technical term that basically means "living off the land.")

As currently envisioned, MIDEA would employ 6-unit (6U) cubesats — spacecraft just slightly larger than a cereal box — as mother ships. These craft would journey to near-Earth asteroids (NEAs), go into orbit around them and release five to 10 free-flying "ultralight plasma detectors" that would study the plasma generated by micrometeoroid impacts.

Modeling work performed by Lee and MIDEA principal investigator Sigrid Close, an associate professor of aeronautics and astronautics at Stanford, suggests that such impacts occur quite frequently — about one hit per square meter (11 square feet) every 10 days or so for NEAs.

"In about two weeks, we should get enough impacts to get an idea of [the composition of] the entire surface," Lee said.

The mother ships would be quite cheap as spacecraft go; Lee said one could probably be built for $10 million to $20 million. Each one would journey to just one NEA. (Visiting multiple asteroids would probably require a mother ship bigger than a 6U cubesat, Lee said.)

 A Space Rock
Asteroids are fascinating for lots of reasons. They contain a variety of valuable resources and slam into our planet on a regular basis, occasionally snuffing out most of Earth's lifeforms. How much do you know about space rocks?
Earth Causes Asteroid-Quakes

There are no construction plans at the moment; MIDEA is just a concept, and much of the current work is focused on developing the technology required for the ultralight plasma detectors, Lee said.

The MIDEA team is currently being funded by NASA's Early Stage Innovations program, he added. If MIDEA does manage to go from concept to full-on mission, spaceflight is likely at least five to 10 years away, Lee said.

That first mission probably wouldn't take a MIDEA craft very far from home.

"I think a LEO [low-Earth orbit] mission would be a good proof of concept," Lee said. "That would make a lot of sense."

There May Be Extraterrestrial Dust On Your Rooftop

There May Be Extraterrestrial Dust On Your Rooftop

Image: NASA/JPL

The gutters around your roof are undoubtedly a horror story right now. They’re probably stuffed with dirt, leaves, and whatever animals decided to nestle themselves up there. Though spring cleaning will definitely unearth these terrors, take heart, because there might be some micrometeorites trapped in your gutters, too.

In a study published in November in Geology, a team of European scientists analyzed material from a group called Project Stardust, which asked people in Oslo, Norway to collect debris on their rooftops. The leader of Project Stardust, Jon Larsen, also assisted as co-author on this study, which confirmed that “urban meteorites” are not just an urban legend—they’re literally as close to home as you can get.

Out of the 661 pounds of rooftop debris the team analyzed, 48 samples were confirmed as “cosmic spherules,” formed by extreme melting as a meteorite heats up in Earth’s atmosphere. The team’s findings include some of the largest—and youngest—micrometeorites ever discovered. It’s important to keep the “large” part in perspective, since these samples are actually between 300 and 400 microns in size, making them extremely difficult to see without the aid of a microscope.

“The micrometeorites in the new collection are mainly found on the roofs of buildings with a maximum of 50 years of age, so it can be assumed that the stones have a terrestrial age of 0–50 years, which make them fresh compared with most of the micrometeorites in the other collections,” Larsen wrote in an essay shared with Gizmodo.

As the team noted in their study, the idea of urban micrometeorites has long been dismissed as a myth. The latest discovery proves that urban micrometeorites are in fact real, and moreover, that scientists don’t have to go to remote regions like Antarctica to find these tiny cosmic intruders.

More than 100 billion micrometeorites are believed to fall to Earth each year. So, if you’re a space enthusiast but a lazy housekeeper, this could give you an added incentive to clean those gutters.

Druist in tegen

UFO following a plane over Lincoln, New Hampshire

UFO following a plane over Lincoln, New Hampshire

lincoln-ufo

Here’s one interesting daytime footage of a bright object that was following a plane over Lincoln, New Hampshire. This was filmed on 21st April 2016 and it was just uploaded to MUFON.

Witness report:

I was reading on my deck around 7 o’clock. I am told that military pilots train in the mountains around where I live and I’ve always enjoyed seeing them fly through. This happens all the time, jets and helicopters are a common sighting. So I naturally saw the jet and did a double take, because there was something following it. I immediately thought I was witnessing some strange aircraft, possibly military but it was not a jet. I knew it wasn’t a jet because it was actually right behind one. The jet it was chasing left a long contrail behind it, but the UFO did not. The UFO was gaining on a jet. No helicopter could do that. I was blown away and luckily got out my phone in time to take a video. I watched the object gaining on the jet for about 10 seconds when i lost them in the trees. I was very excited and anxious. I felt I has witnessed something very hard to dismiss as a “weather balloon” or some obvious type of aircraft. Shortly after the jet and object left my range of sight I saw 3 more jets and 1 helicopters going the same direction (in my opinion chasing the UFO). I also got another video of those other aircraft. I would like to show the video to an aviation expert and maybe get an explanation. I’m uploading to MUFON hoping for answers.

SECRET MILITARY TESTS? UFO filmed 'tailing jet' near US Airforce base

SECRET MILITARY TESTS? UFO filmed 'tailing jet' near US Airforce base

THIS video is said to show a mysterious object "tailing and catching a jet plane" near to a US Airforce (USAF) base.

The case is being investigated by the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) after it was sent the footage and a witness report.

The man was in Lincoln, New Hampshire, in the US, when he recorded the odd video.

It appears to show a plane being folloed and caught up by a smaller object.

In a report to US-based MUFON, which is the world's largest organisation dedicated to UFO and alien research, the unnamed man said: "I am told that military pilots train in the mountains around where I live and I’ve always enjoyed seeing them fly through.

Aurora Borealis: What Causes the Northern Lights & Where to See Them

Aurora Borealis: What Causes the Northern Lights & Where to See Them

The northern lights, or aurora borealis, offer an entrancing, dramatic, magical display that fascinates all who see it — but just what causes this dazzling natural phenomenon?

At the center of our solar system lies the sun, the yellow star that sustains life on our planet. The sun's many magnetic fields distort and twist as our parent star rotates on its axis. When these fields become knotted together, they burst and create so-called sunspots. Usually, these sunspots occur in pairs; the largest can be several times the size of Earth's diameter.

At the center of the sun, the temperature is 27 million degrees Fahrenheit (15 million degrees Celsius). As the temperature on its surface rises and falls, the sun boils and bubbles. Particles escape from the star from the sunspot regions on the surface, hurtling particles of plasma, known as solar wind, into space. It takes these winds around 40 hours to reach Earth. When they do, they can cause the dramatic displays known as the aurora borealis. [Infographics: How the Northern Lights Work & Anatomy of Sun Storms & Solar Flares]

The sunspots and solar storms that cause the most magnificent displays of the northern lights occur roughly every 11 years. The solar cycle peaked in 2013, but it was the weakest solar maximum in a century. [Photos: Amazing Auroras of 2014]

"This solar cycle continues to rank among the weakest on record," Ron Turner of Analytic Services, Inc. who serves as a Senior Science Advisor to NASA's Innovative Advanced Concepts program, said in a statement.

Since record-keeping of the ebb and flow of the sun's activity began in 1749, there have been 22 full cycles. Researchers monitor space weather events because they have the potential to affect spacecraft in orbit, knock out power grids and communications infrastructure on Earth, and amp up normal displays of the northern and southern lights. Scientists are also investigating how fluctuations in the sun's activity affect weather on our planet.

Earth is constantly bombarded with debris, radiation and other magnetic waves from space that could threaten the future of life as we know it. Most of the time, the planet's own magnetic field does an excellent job of deflecting these potentially harmful rays and particles, including those from the sun.

Particles discharged from the sun travel 93 million miles (around 150 million km) toward Earth before they are drawn irresistibly toward the magnetic north and south poles. As the particles pass through the Earth's magnetic shield, they mingle with atoms and molecules of oxygen, nitrogen and other elements that result in the dazzling display of lights in the sky.

The auroras in Earth's Northern Hemisphere are called the aurora borealis. Their southern counterpart, which light up the Antarctic skies in the Southern Hemisphere, are known as the aurora australis.

The colors most often associated with the aurora borealis are pink, green, yellow, blue, violet, and occasionally orange and white. Typically, when the particles collide with oxygen, yellow and green are produced. Interactions with nitrogen produce red, violet, and occasionally blue colors.

The type of collision also makes a difference to the colors that appear in the sky: atomic nitrogen causes blue displays, while molecular nitrogen results in purple. The colors are also affected by altitude. The green lights typically in areas appear up to 150 miles (241 km) high, red above 150 miles; blue usually appears at up to 60 miles (96.5 km); and purple and violet above 60 miles.

These lights may manifest as a static band of light, or, when the solar flares are particularly strong, as a dancing curtain of ever-changing color.

For millennia, the lights have been the source of speculation, superstition and awe. Cave paintings in France thought to date back 30,000 years have illustrations of the natural phenomenon.

In more superstitious times, the northern lights were thought to be a harbinger of war or destruction, before people really understood what causes them. Many classic philosophers, authors and astronomers, including Aristotle, Descartes, Goethe and Halley, refer to the northern lights in their work.

As early as 1616, the astronomer Galileo Galilei used the name aurora borealis to describe them, taking the name of the mythical Roman goddess of the dawn, Aurora, and the Greek name for wind of the north, Boreas.

The aurora australis, or the southern lights, occur around the south polar region. But, since the South Pole is even more inhospitable than the North Pole, it is often trickier to view the southern lights.

The best places to see the northern lights are Alaska and northern Canada, but visiting these vast, open expanses is not always easy. Norway, Sweden and Finland also offer excellent vantage points. During periods of particularly active solar flares, the lights can be seen as far south as the top of Scotland and even northern England. [A Guide for Watching Earth's Auroras]

On rare occasions, the lights are seen farther south. They were first observed by European settlers in New England in 1791. In "Historical Storms of New England," published in 1891, Sidney Perley wrote, "May 15, 1719, the more beautiful and brilliant aurora borealis was first observed here as far as any record or tradition of that period inform us, and it is said that in England it was first noticed only three years before this date. In December of the same year the aurora again appeared, and the people became greatly alarmed, not dreading it so much as a means of destruction but as precursor of the fires of the last great day and a sign of coming dangers."

The northern lights are always present, but winter is usually the best time to see them, due to lower levels of light pollution and the clear, crisp air. September, October, March and April are some of the best months to view the aurora borealis. The lights are known to be brighter and more active for up to two days after sunspot activity is at its highest. Several agencies, such as NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, also monitor solar activity and issue aurora alerts when they are expected to put on a particularly impressive show.

Florida witness describes hovering disc UFO

Florida witness describes hovering disc UFO

A Florida witness at St. Augustine reported watching a disc-shaped UFO hovering in the night sky before moving out over the ocean, according to testimony in Case 79397 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The witness is a MUFON Field Investigator who was taking out the trash at 9:39 p.m. on September 25, 2016, when the incident began.

“As I watched my garage door go up, immediately in front of me was a UFO hovering in alignment over the house across the street, but farther behind it,” the witness stated. “See house photo which shows my neighbor’s house, but in daylight.”

The witness immediately recognized the object as something unusual.

“My first thought was ‘OMG a UFO!’ It was way too big for a plane. A second later as the lights strobed and reflected off the body I realized the lights were a wrong color(too much blue) for a plane, and it was far too big and too slow to be a plane, slower than even a slow helicopter. My vision is about 20/35 without my glasses, so I ran inside to get my glasses. It was hovering at about 30 degrees in elevation and 10 degrees north. The sky was mostly clear with only a few clouds (cloud base 3,100-6,500 feet according to the weather report), wind northeast at 8 mph, temperature was 78 degrees and humidity was 78 percent.”

The witness described the object.

“It was disc-shaped, but had sharp points on the top and bottom. There was a larger oval, very bright, white light on the top point that blinked, not strobed. That light was so bright it hurt my eyes. Surrounding the object along its side were strobing multi-colored lights that strobed from white/blue/green/red/ yellow very quickly. They reflected off the body that seemed to be dull gray, but sometimes looked dull amber depending on the color of the lights strobing at the moment. Its speed was quite slow, slower than a slow helicopter.”

The object also turned off its lights.

“Twice, all of its lights went out at once for about two seconds and then the lights came back on as it hovered in the same place. Initially it hovered for about two minutes over the house, (I counted 110 seconds after I retrieved my glasses) and then it headed east for about 10 seconds, stopped for 2-3 seconds, headed back west for about 10 seconds, stopped for 2-3 seconds, and then headed southeast. It had significant sideways movement as described, but its altitude did not change much other than slight wobbling.”

The object also moved into a cloud at one point.

“Once it went inside a cloud, the cloud lit up with the multi-colored lights and then it came out of the cloud, so its elevation was at least 3,100 feet, meaning it had to be pretty big to appear penny-size at arm’s length and 3,100 feet up.”

The object soon moved away.

“It moved slowly southeast of me and I lost sight of it when it was behind some woods. From its height and distance, it should have been over the Atlantic Ocean at that point. From the direction it moved, it may have been over downtown St. Augustine and/or St. Augustine Beach at some point, so I wonder if MUFON will get more reports. I watched it for a total of approximately six minutes. There were no animal or psychological effects and no missing time.”

Fossilised protein has been discovered inside a 195-million-year-old dinosaur bone

Fossilised protein has been discovered inside a 195-million-year-old dinosaur bone

This is an incredible discovery.

DAVID NIELD

When scientists uncover bones and other hard objects from the ground, they can sometimes find scraps of organic material attached. But nothing we've found comes close to the age of proteins recently discovered on a dinosaur fossil thought to date back 195 million years.

That's around 100 million years older than fragments of collagen found in the thigh bone of a hadrosaur in 2009, and it could give us a unique look back at the biology of other dinosaurs that wandered the Earth at the time.

The discovery was made by researchers at the University of Toronto within a rib of a Lufengosaurus dinosaur, a long-necked herbivore that roamed across what's now south-western China during the Early Jurassic period.

lufen 1024

Farley Katz/Wikimedia Commons

"These proteins are the building blocks of animal soft tissues, and it's exciting to understand how they have been preserved," says one of the research team, palaeontologist Robert Reisz.

With the help of colleagues in China and Taiwan, researchers used a synchrotron machine to analyse fossil samples.

The device uses infrared spectroscopy, or targeted beams of light, to identify materials - in this case collagen and iron-rich proteins - without having to risk contaminating the samples.

lufen-2

Robert Reisz

Previous collagen discoveries of this kind required dissolving the rest of the fossilised bone away, and the team behind the latest research says its non-invasive approach could open the way to finding even more organic remains in the future.

To find any kind of soft tissue material is very rare though, as it normally decays naturally in the ground, leaving only the bones behind.

Scientists still aren't sure why some proteins and collagen are able to survive for so long, but in this case the researchers think the blood vessels helped to form a "closed micro-sized chamber" that isolated the material.

The researchers suggest that small, iron rich particles left over from blood flowing through the rib bones might have been the source of the haematite which bound to the proteins and helped protect them against the ravages of time.

One of the insights the new find might give us is how dinosaurs evolved into the species of birds we still see on Earth today, which is thought to have happened over the course of just 10 million years – a very short timespan in evolutionary terms.

In the meantime, Reiz says the synchrotron technique has "great future potential", and should be able to pick up organic material even when there's only a minuscule amount of it left behind.

That said, don't expect a Jurassic Park-style theme park anytime soon - these scraps of matter aren't enough to provide dinosaur DNA, which is thought to decay naturally within half a century.

Some experts, including Mary Schweitzer from North Carolina State University, say the current tests are too limited in scope for us to know conclusively what we're dealing with on these bones, saying that further analysis is required.

Others, including Stephen Brusatte from the University of Edinburgh in the UK, think the evidence is already strong enough. Neither Schweitzer nor Brusatte were directly involved in the research.

"To find proteins in a 195-million-year-old dinosaur fossil is a startling discovery," Brusatte told the BBC.

"It almost sounds too good to be true, but this team has used every method at their disposal to verify their discovery, and it seems to hold up."

The findings have been published in Nature Communications.

Tom DeLonge Preps Non-Fiction Book About UFO Phenomenon

Tom DeLonge Preps Non-Fiction Book About UFO Phenomenon

'Sekret Machines: Gods' co-written with noted occult author, researcher Peter Levenda

Tom DeLonge will publish a new non-fiction book that explores the UFO phenomenon, 'Sekret Machines: Gods, Man and War.' Gary Wolstenholme/Getty

Former Blink-182 guitarist Tom DeLonge will publish a new non-fiction book about UFOs, Sekret Machines: Gods, March 7th.

Inside Tom DeLonge's UFO Obsession, Blink-182 Turmoil

"Does part of me get bummed?" says DeLonge of band estrangement. "Totally. But it doesn't consume me"

DeLonge co-wrote Sekret Machines with Peter Levenda, who has penned numerous books about history and the occult. The new book is based on interviews with scientists, engineers, intelligence officers and military officials. It aims to challenge the way people think about UFO sightings and related phenomena.

Sekret Machines is the opening salvo on the complacency of human institutions where the UFO Phenomenon is concerned," Levenda sid. "It's designed to shake people up, to make them question their assumptions. This book is not only a new take on the Phenomenon – by treating it as a given – but a new approach to religion that takes a hard look at religious texts and ideas from around the world to discern the traces of an event that changed us forever."

DeLonge praised Levenda's input: "It was his ability to frame an esoteric thesis that gave me the ammunition to speak clearly on the subject matter, and that got me in the door."

Sekret Machines will also feature a forward from Jacques Vallée, a computer scientist and one of the most well-known writers and researchers on UFOs (he was the inspiration for Claude Lacombe, the French scientist in Close Encounters With a Third Kind). "The sightings have been ignored by academics, summarily brushed off by politicians, censored by churches, classified by the military and ridiculed by the media," said Vallée. "Yet the reports continue to come. The experience of the unknown has only deepened, raising unsettling questions about the intrusion of the uncanny in our shiny modern world of convenient machines and superficial entertainment."

Sekret Machines: Gods marks DeLonge's first non-fiction book after co-authoring several novels over the past few years. The books are part of a larger multi-media project, To the Stars, which DeLonge has thrown himself into since splitting with Blink-182. To the Stars also includes music and film, and DeLonge told Rolling Stone that he's been gleaning information from officials in the aerospace industry, the Department of Defense and NASA.

"It's very hard to think, 'How did this guy in a band get access like that?'" DeLonge said. "It sounds crazy. But it's because I can speak to a very specific audience. I earned their trust. I knew my material."

CIA ROSWELL COVER UP? UFO files release 'to distract truth seekers from REAL missing docs'

CIA ROSWELL COVER UP? UFO files release 'to distract truth seekers from REAL missing docs'

THE release by the CIA of thousands of formerly classified documents about suspected UFO sightings was part of a "cover up", not transparency, it has shockingly been claimed.

CIA-Roswell

GETTY

An alien chaser claims the CIA is withholding crucial UFO files.

Last month, the US intelligence agency published the swathe of historic confidential files, many of which were about former investigations into the UFO phenomena, on its website.

It has given UFO hunters hours worth of reading and investigating to undertake.

But, one alien conspiracy theorist claims they are wasting their time if they do, as he has branded the releases red herrings and not the real deal.

Scott C Waring, editor of ufosightingsdaily.com, claims no information has been released about the unsolved Roswell UFO case from 1947 - an incident seen as the holy grail of flying saucer sightings among alien truth seekers - a host of other key cases.

Roswell is the case that UFO buffs would most like to see former files about, but none ever seems to materilise.

Mr Waring, and many other conspiracy theorists, are convinced the US Government is in contact with aliens but it is kept hidden from the public amid fears over the impact it would have on religion and the rule of law.

Mr Waring vented his frustration in a blog entitled "CIA Releases UFO Documents To Waste Your Time And Make You Give Up The Subject".

Scott C Waring claims files about the Roswell UFO have been withheld by the CIA.

He wrote: "For some unknown reason, probably just out of the kindness of their own hearts, the CIA has released some ancient CIA intelligence gathered from past UFO sightings and decided to ALLOW the public to read over them.

"You see, we, the UFO researchers around the world, have put so much pressure on the world governments by us getting in the news daily and different UFO facts and sightings, all of which are the latest sightings and news, that the CIA must have figured that these old documents from a time before most of us were born would some how appease our appetite for the truth.

"But, and I say this with laughter, why did they even waste their time posting this old information?

"It's a pile of garbage documents that have been picked out as being the least important and least revealing, and then they edit them until its so unreadable that no one will ever learn anything from them."

Mr Waring protested there was no information released about:

*Roswell

*The March 1969 UFO crash in Russia

*The Brazil UFO crash of 1996

*The Kecksburg UFO crash in Dec 1965

*The UFO fleet the US Army shot at and had no effect on over Los Angeles in Feb of 1942

*The UFO crash in New Mexico in 2003

*The UFO crash in Needles, California in 2008

*The alleged alien base below the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico

He added: "I could go on and on with this list.

"What I'm saying is that the CIA documents are only good for carrying to the outhouse.

"Don't waste your time going though them. They want you to find nothing so you will give up on the subject, but we already know there their plan.

"So we keep on keeping on, doing what we do daily, trudging forward no matter what. We are already winning and the CIA and aliens know it too."

There were mixed thoughts on Mr Waring's claims.

One reader posted: "Scott, time to grow up I think."

But, another said: "Best title you've ever written, I choked laughing."

The CIA denies any cover up, and says it regularly releases formerly classified files after 30 years.

Swarm of mysterious 'UFOs' spotted in Bristol after bizarre claims BT Tower is used as spaceship refuelling station

There have been several similar sightings of UFOs in the area already this year as residents remain baffled

BY LEWIS PENNOCKTRISTAN CORKKARA O'NEILL

A swarm of mysterious lights has been spotted and filmed over Bristol as bizarre claims emerge that the BT Tower located there is actually a refuelling station for alien spaceships .

The orange blips were filmed gliding over houses in Hengrove by mum-of-one Kelly Maynard.

The intriguing footage was shared just days after a Bristol Post reader shared their theory that a BT tower in Purdown is a refuelling station for spaceships.

A similar sighting was also recorded in January over Siston Common, near Mangotsfield.

One resident spotted 10 to 15 different lights in the sky

"I looked up and there were several orange lights moving quite fast in the sky," said 36-year-old Kelly, who shared the footage to a Facebook page called 'The Universe'.

"It was about six or seven at night and I ran in and grabbed my phone. On my Facebook somebody said it was lanterns but then they saw the video and said they didn't know what it was.

"I have never seen anything like it. I could not believe it.

"I've got no explanation for it, so it must be something mysterious."

The video shows three orange blips moving through the sky, but Kelly said she actually saw ten to 15 of the unidentified objects before the camera started rolling, reports the Bristol Post .

The footage was recorded on a Saturday night in January, Kelly said, but she decided to share it online this week in the hope of finding answers.

It comes as claims have been made that that Purdown BT Tower, which dominates the skyline over north and east Bristol is a refuelling station for UFOs .

Writing to the Bristol Post from Montpelier, Ernest B Skidmore has spoken of an unusual experience he had near the tower, on the same day as a UFO was spotted and filmed by the police helicopter over the Bristol Channel.

He even claims the shape of a copse of trees nearby spells out the letter B – and is some kind of sign for UFOs that they can refuel there.

The tower, near the Stoke Park estate, has been a Bristol landmark for decades, and contains communications equipment.

Heading for Area 51? ‘UFO on truck with police escort seen being driven at night’

Heading for Area 51? ‘UFO on truck with police escort seen being driven at night’

A STUNNED eyewitness watched open-jawed as a "UFO" was apparently seen being transported by a police convoy on the back on a truck at night near a top-secret US Airforce (USAF) base.

The alleged sighting was reported by an unnamed man to the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) in the US.

The witness says he saw the "flying saucer" convoy being driven on a road in the Fort Leonard Wood area of Missouri on February 1 at 10.15pm local time.

It is about 240 miles from the Wright Patterson USAF base, which is where conspiracy theorists claim crashed UFOs, and even alien bodies, have been hidden away by the military.

In a report to NUFORC, the man said: "I was driving north 15 miles north of Fort Leonard Wood on I-44 north last night at exactly 10:15 pm and saw a line of police cars spaced out about a mile with no traffic coming southbound.

"I noticed more police cars with lights keeping traffic held back in the distance about another mile and a semi with flatbed was in the centre.

"As the semi (articulated truck) approached, I couldn't believe that the semi was carrying what appeared to be a saucer shaped object.

"I passed within a hundred or so feet of the semi going in the opposite direction.

"The semi was moving at a moderate speed and the area was somewhat illuminated and my 16-foot Penske truck was elevated so I had a clear view.

"It was dull metallic grey, with thick short legs coming from the center bottom like fence posts, and a thick central body tapering to very thin edges.

”It encompassed the whole trailer and was hanging over the edges with no cockpit or windows or markings."

The man asked if there had been any other reports or if it could be a drone.

It is not the first time there have been similar reports of UFOs being driven across America on the back of trucks in police convoys.

They have often been seen in the vicinity of Area 51, another top-secret USAF base in the Nevada desert, where it is also claimed the USAF test top secret spy planes and also store UFOs.

In fact, Peter Davenport, NUFORC director, posted a response to the sighting highlighting an earlier one, and suggesting it could actually be a secret space craft used by the USAF.

He said: "We have heard about that object before, and we believe that it is some kind of space vehicle, used by the US Air Force."

Witness report to NUFORC

He said the previous sighting happened on January 15, 2015, in the Lordsburg area of New Mexico, when a "triangle-shaped UFO" was seen being driven in convoy, and the witness had provided a drawing of what he saw, asking if they were the same.

Scott C Waring, editor of ufosightingsdaily.com, said: "Some people will ask, if it's a UFO, why don't they fly it where they have got to go?

"Because if it was recently traded from aliens to humans, like in the past, it takes a lot of time to practice flying these things to get the hang of it.

"Also the USAF don't have UFO pilots just hanging around doing nothing.

"The last thing the USAF wants is a UFO crash in the middle of some city because a pilot thought he could handle it, but was wrong."

He claimed that video footage had emerged of the most recent sighting reported to NUFORC, from another source.

Witness report to NUFORC

He pointed to a video uploaded to YouTube by Andries Riphagen on Sunday, but this video claimed it was filmed near Area 51.

In the video, a flying saucer on legs is seen on the back on a truck, which has police on sirens in front and behind it.

Mr Waring said: "There are two reports of this craft being hauled on a trailer.

"One of them also has a video, and says its probably headed to Area 51. As you can see, this is an all new video of a disk being carried by military personal with a police escort.

"The disk is huge, about ten meters a gross and stands on three legs. These two reports back up each other and are proof it occurred."

But, according to one poster on the Andries Riphagen channel, the video was actually filmed a year ago, so may be nothing to do with the new report made to NUFORC, and could be a hoax.

By March, the FBI won't let you email in FOIA requests

You can only send them by fax, snail mail or their internet submission portal.
?url=http%3A%2F%2Fo.aolcdn.com%2Fdims-shared%2Fdims3%2FGLOB%2Fcrop%2F4928x3264%2B0%2B0%2Fresize%2F1600x1060%21%2Fformat%2Fjpg%2Fquality%2F85%2Fhttp%3A%2F%2Fo.aolcdn.com%2Fhss%2Fstorage%2Fmidas%2F8288367be0dc11534bbc40c2d7e57de2%2F204904174%2F505252961.jpg Raghu_Ramaswamy / Getty Images

Formal requests citing the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) have been a powerful tool in the public's efforts to legally get info from the government. And not just for yourself: Once a FOIA request runs its lengthy course, an official body often releases that intel publicly -- for example, when the CIA published 12 million declassified documents last month on everything from Nazis to UFOs. While they take time to fulfill, most agencies allow citizens to easily submit FOIA inquiries using email, with some notable exceptions relying on older communication methods. But on March 1st, the FBI is intentionally rolling back the technological clock, and will only allow requests via fax or snail mail, plus a limited amount through their online portal.

This will undoubtedly hinder the public's ability to get information from the agency. On top of eliminating a far less burdensome method of communication, submitting through the FBI's portal requires including personal information, including phone number and address, and agree to the site's terms of service. Nested in the TOS is the requirement that users only make one FOIA request per submission per day.

As The Daily Dot points out, there is no legal limit on how many folks can submit daily, and since one could just send in other requests via fax or snail mail, the FBI isn't preventing people from making more inquiries. But it does put enormous onus on the requester for little apparent reason.

"It's a huge step backwards for the FBI to switch from a proven, ubiquitous, user-friendly technology like email to a portal that has consistently shown problems, ranging from restricting how often citizens can access their right to government oversight to legitimate privacy concerns," Michael Morisy, co-founder of the public records request tracking nonprofit MuckRock, told The Daily Dot. "Given that email has worked well for millions of requests over the years, this seems like a move designed to reduce participation and transparency, and we hope that the FBI will reverse course."

Citizens and groups have sued the FBI on behalf of FOIA requests to facilitate its review and release of documents. Last December, VICE brought a joint lawsuit against the agency alongside 50 inquiries related to its activities and disclosures immediately leading up to the election. But deliberately using outdated technology to slow down the process isn't a new strategy for government agencies, either: In July 2016, the Department of Justice was sued for refusing to upgrade their decades-old machines, thereby deliberately prolonging the process.

Police Chasing Over 5 Alien UFO in Florida

Police Chasing Over 5 Alien UFO in Florida

Police Chasing Over 5 Alien UFO in Florida Clapway

Secret UFO police may actually exist, and they were spotted in Florida. This special police unit may be responsible for containing any alien activity. That is before it goes public. YouTube channel secureteam10 posted images of what looks like regular cop cars, but with bold letters saying “UFO Response Team.” The odd labeling was on the back and sides of the cruisers. Are there alien cops patrolling the streets of Florida? Or is this just another government distraction to hide the real truth?

Florida UFO police are different than other cops; will we see alien perpetrators in the back of these cars soon?

The first image sent in from Cape Coral, Florida clearly shows a police cruiser with UFO Response Team boldly placed for all to see. Tyler from secureteam10 says the viewer who sent in the photo said that the cop car was indeed different from the normal Crown Victoria’s seen on the road. The eyewitness also said that the cop was working on his car’s laptop as well. Sounds like a real cop, doesn’t it? Was the cop responding to a possible alien sighting?

Increase in UFO activity has led to more alien police units; Men in Black chase 5 aliens in Florida

Reports of five UFOs in Florida by a son and father have led to more UFO police in the state. There have also been rumors of Men in Black type officials chasing aliens as well. The father and son claimed to see over five UFOs, and they were not the only ones. Supporting reports of the same sighting is evidence that alien activity is on the rise. Men in Black officials were also rumored to be in the state. The believers think that the agents are attempting to keep the truth about aliens secret. Since those heavily guarded secrets could cause society to collapse.

UFO Police may be for a movie, but the Alien cops could be Necessary in the wake of a 2017 invasion

The images of UFO police may also be the result of a new Resident Evil movie one viewer said. Regardless of why the alien cruisers exist, they may become a necessity if the 2017 invasion by aliens is real. The predictions have come from believers, the Bible, and even former President Eisenhower’s great-granddaughter. What will become of Earth within the next year?

Orlando man films 'glowing UFO craft,' most likely billowing garbage bag

Orlando man films 'glowing UFO craft,' most likely billowing garbage bag

Posted By Colin Wolf

An Orlando resident recently posted footage of what he says was a "glowing UFO craft," but more than likely it was a billowing garbage bag.

The witness, who only identifies himself as a helicopter pilot, submitted the footage to MUFON (Mutual UFO Network) stating, “It was lower than the clouds. I don’t know the size of the craft, but I’m guessing that it was flying at 1,500 feet. I filmed it and I saw it go inside a very small cloud. It should had flown out of it in a second, but it didn’t. I thought that somehow it had disappeared and stopped filming it. But I kept staring at that cloud. Then after quite sometime, I saw it come out of the same small cloud. It turned and flew upwards and vanished.”

The footage was taken on Dec. 18, with a cell phone, at around 5:24 p.m.

OK, let's run through a few possible things that it could be:
1. Drone
2. Shiny balloon
3. Billowing garbage bag

On OpenMindsTV, the witness said of the drone/balloon/garbage bag, “I had a feeling to look up as if I had to, and then I saw the glowing craft fly from south direction to north.”

“It was flying high, but well below the commercial airplanes flight altitude that were in traffic during the afternoon.”

Honestly, we want to believe but it really looks like a garbage bag.

Here's what it's like to be a UFO investigator in Florida, USA

Here's what it's like to be a UFO investigator in Florida, USA

Posted By Monivette Cordeiro

BY MONIVETTE CORDEIRO
Hundreds of people descended into Lake Buena Vista last weekend to talk aliens at a symposium for the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), an organization that scientifically investigates and collects data on UFO sightings and other phenomena.

While some people scoff at the notion of otherworldly beings, many are interested and they're not all wearing tin foil hats or running weird shows on the History Channel.

Orlando Weekly talked to Morgan Beall, the Florida state director for MUFON, about the kinds of things he sees when he's investigating the weird parts of the Sunshine State that don't involve the Florida man.

OW: Does Orlando have a high propensity for UFOs?
Beall:
Orlando, along with the rest of Florida, has actually had quite a few sightings compared to other states. On average we get about 30 to 40 cases a month from Florida alone. We get combination cases of someone seeing a strange object and then possibly something unexplainable, like the abduction phenomenon people talk about or something crawling around or walking around on the ground that’s associated with the flying objects. Do we know what those are? Are they aliens or not? We don’t know. We just know there’s a phenomenon that we’re trying to scientifically study. Mainly, it's objects in the sky we can’t explain.
OW: Why do you think Florida is such a hotspot for those sightings?
Beall:
The water is a good reason. Florida, as you know, has one of the longest coastlines of any state in the U.S. There’s a lot of open skies, and people go outside a lot. We’re a tourist destination for the rest of the country, so a lot of people tend to gravitate to our beaches, which translates to higher counts of cases.

OW: What has been an interesting case you’ve heard of this year?
Beall:
This is a Canadian case, but it was worked on by our stateside investigators. An engineer who runs an engineering company was on a hunting trip along with his colleagues when they saw something very close, a like a metallic-type object, that interfered with their hunting equipment. Their camera systems were shutting down. They saw this object up close, within a few 100 feet. It was definitely not a conventional aircraft of any kind because it didn’t have any physical propulsion or propeller or anything. That's something we would classify as a Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP).

OW: What about in Florida?
Beall:
One of the most interesting things we received this year are some historical pieces from military bases. I worked on a case this past year that dealt with some Navy witnesses. This incident happened on the USS Independence over the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Florida where they saw a light underneath the ship, and remember this is a large aircraft carrier. A witness described like this: If you put a paperclip in your hand, the USS Independence would be the paperclip and your hand would be the light. Eventually the light went to the front of the ship and pulled out of the water and shot off until it disappeared into the sky. It was impressive to hear this coming from military personnel. Another very interesting case off the coast of Florida involved the U.S. Coast Guard. They saw a small, silver disc come out of the water near their ship and pick up their buoy, which they were dragging behind the ship. Another famous case is from 1989 at the Miami International Airport. Two flights nearly collided with this boomerang-shaped aircraft hovering over the tarmac and all the ground personnel, the traffic operators, pilots and all these witnesses never talked about because the tower manager told everybody to keep their mouths shut. We found two witnesses that eventually came and talked to us: A radio operator who heard the whole incident happen over the radio and a tower operator who had second-hand counsel on the incident.

OW: What’s it like an investigator?
Beall:
Well, it’s certainly not glamorous. And it’s a lot of work. Depending on the research you’re doing, you could be doing historical document research and archives, which is arduous and academic. You could be part of the analysis teams that look and extrapolate data. A few of us do actual interviews and look at the trace evidence, following up on leads. There’s a lot of different roles in the organization. We’re all volunteers. I do this on my time off. I have a day job, and then I have this job.

OW: What do you hear from people? Do you get hate online?
Beall:
Oh, of course. I mean, you have people that like the phenomena, and they're interested in it, but are constantly trolling other individuals online just because they think it’s funny. It’s OK to be skeptical, actually. We encourage it. We want people to ask questions, we want them to test the hypothesis, but there are people we call pseudo skeptics or cynics who don’t want to believe. I think belief is the wrong word because it’s not so much about believing. We try to question everything, look at all the facts and then we learn from it at the the end.

ESA’s ExoMars 2020 Mission to Explore Mars for Signs of Life

ESA’s ExoMars 2020 Mission to Explore Mars for Signs of Life

More Red Planet Exploration in the Cards

As one gets older, the years go by like pages flipped in a book. One can barely make out the letters on the current page when the next page flips and then the page after that. So when we look at European Space Agency (ESA) projects that seem stuck in slow motion, we can be sure that they’ll be here before we know it.

ExoMars Mission is a story with many chapters, the first of which was ExoMars blasting off in March 2016 for the Red Planet to search for methane in the Martian atmosphere. The Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) was to search for trace gasses that would help scientists understand if there is life on the surface of the planet. It was also expected to test a number of instruments, perform orbit calibration measurements, and send pictures back to Earth.

A Setback for ESA, But a Setback They Will Learn From

Unfortunately, the Schiaparelli lander unexpectedly crash landed onto the surface of Mars even though the atmospheric entry and flight path went exactly as planned. In subsequent analysis, ESA determined that a computer glitch during descent caused the crash. Fortunately, the lander was able to collect nearly all of the data intended for the mission before crashing.

The following video, ExoMars – A Promising Future, explains why the ESA member states have decided to continue with the project that will deploy a rover on Mars and search for signs of life to a depth of 6.56 feet (2 meters).

New US Missile Hits Target in Space

Raytheon SM3

New US Missile Hits Target in Space

The US Department of Defense Missile Defense Agency and Raytheon have successfully tested a missile that intercepts enemy missiles in space.

The SM-3 IIA missile can sense ballistic missile attacks from space and neutralize the threats. The SM-3 made its debut by eliminating a ballistic missile fired from the Navy’s USS John Paul Jones destroyer.

The idea for the mission was conceived and motivated, in part, by Star Wars, according to Scout Warrior’s Kris Osborn. “Now that technology is getting better,” he said, “exoatmospheric” missiles can intercept short- and medium-range ballistic missiles descending from outer space. The anti-missile technology would come in handy if the medium-range DF-16 missile tested by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army gets deployed.

The next-generation missile is being developed by both Washington and Tokyo, Scout reported. Further, the US plans to deploy the missile in Poland by 2018. The successful launch took place in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Hawaii.

Raytheon said that the 21-inch airframe allows US and Japanese forces to defend a larger area. “Now we have a higher sensitivity—so that is just a better seeker,” Raytheon SM-3 program director Amy Cohen said.

“The SM-3 Block IIA missile is a larger version of the SM-3 IB in terms of boosters and the kinetic warhead, which allows for increased operating time,” the Missile Defense Agency said in a statement. Other officials asserted that the test was a “critical milestone” and that it was a “vitally important” achievement for preparing against “increasing ballistic missile threats around the world.”

NEW DOCUMENTARY CLAIMS ATLANTIS WAS REAL AND REVEALS THE LOST CITY’S LOCATION

700_a75535d6a86776a01fd71ddfa5d794ec.jpg?v=1486423334

Atlantis is generally considered to be a mythical story about an advanced and highly successful civilization which thought it would reign supreme over the rest of the world indefinitely until it suddenly sank beneath the waves. The story of Atlantis is usually interpreted as an allegorical legend relating to the inevitable collapse of great civilizations, but could it be that the myth is grounded in fact? According to James Cameron, who has produced and directed a new documentary on the topic, it is likely that Atlantis was a real place.

JAMES CAMERON TRIES TO DISCOVER THE LOST CITY OF ATLANTIS

The lost civilization of Atlantis has been a subject of fierce debate for more than two thousand years among prominent figures in philosophy, history, and archaeology. The only thing that modern day academics seem to agree on when it comes to the legendary city is that the first written documentation relating to it was relayed by the philosopher, Plato.

Plato wrote that Atlantis stood head and shoulders ahead of the rest of the world because of its association with the god Poseidon and his son Atlas who was anointed its king. The Atlanteans became one of the most powerful nations in the world through their military prowess and their extraordinarily advanced technology. This led to them becoming a dominant imperial power that conquered the entirety of Africa and a significant portion of Europe. However, the region was struck with a series of violent earthquakes and floods in the course of a single day and night. Plato writes that Atlantis was then ‘swallowed up by the Earth and the island of Atlantis…disappeared into the depths of the sea, ’ an act he attributed to divine retribution.

Plato was writing thousands of years after Atlantis apparently stood as a dominant world power. He received his information about the legendary city through the oral tradition. As the story passed to Plato through this method, one might expect it to contain embellishments and fictional elements. However, it does not necessarily follow that this means the entire story is a fabrication. Could it be that Atlantis really existed?

Getting to the truth of the matter is the goal of director James Cameron whose team used Plato’s texts in a bid to reveal where the lost city of Atlantis could have stood. The documentary takes viewers to some locations hoping to uncover significant clues that would indicate that an incredible and sophisticated civilization is lying beneath the waves.

New Images of Mars Show Winter Wonderland

New Images of Mars Show Winter Wonderland

If there is a Martian version of Santa Claus, this is where he would live. The European Space Agency’s Mars Express orbiter has been delivering a steady stream of images of the planet’s surface since 2004. Scientists recently pieced them all together for a mosaic revealing the stunning snow-capped canyons of the northern polar ice cap on the Red Planet.

The Martian north pole is roughly the size of the Greenland Ice Sheet on Earth and the “snow” is just over a mile deep, filling in the planet’s Chasma Boreale Canyon, which is about the same depth as the Grand Canyon.

But, the white fluffy stuff isn’t the type of snow one might use to build a snowmartian with. It consists primarily of precipitated carbon dioxide from Mars’s atmosphere, and only occurs during the winter season — which is about four months long. As the planet begins to warm up again, most of the cap will evaporate back into the atmosphere.

Mars also has its own Coriolis effect, which causes moving objects on Earth’s surface to be deflected to the right in the Northern Hemisphere, and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere. This force likely created gusts of wind that push the snow into the pinwheel formations seen below.

In this mosaic, you can see where the center of Mars' north pole.
In this mosaic, you can see where the center of Mars' north pole.

As the Mars Express orbiter continues to deliver data about the climate and atmosphere of the planet back to scientists, they are able to unravel its mysteries and determine if it is hospitable for life — specifically human life.

Other intriguing information from the Mars Express has found that the planet once harbored water and volcanic activity, and clues that the atmosphere may contain methane. They’re all signs that maybe Earthlings weren’t the first living creatures in our solar system.

New Hampshire witness says UFO chased jet (VIDEO)

A New Hampshire witness at Lincoln reported watching and videotaping what appeared to be an unknown object following a jet, according to testimony in Case 81792 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The witness was outside reading on a deck at 7 p.m. on April 21, 2016, when the incident occurred.

“I am told that military pilots train in the mountains around where I live and I’ve always enjoyed seeing them fly through,” the witness stated.“This happens all the time. Jets and helicopters are a common sighting. So I naturally saw the jet and did a double take, because there was something following it.”

The witness thought that the object looked strange – possibly something the military built, but not a jet.

“I knew it wasn’t a jet because it was actually right behind one. The jet it was chasing left a long contrail behind it, but the UFO did not. The UFO was gaining on the jet. No helicopter could do that. I was blown away and luckily got out my phone in time to take a video. I watched the object gaining on the jet for about 10 seconds when I lost them in the trees.”

The witness felt excited and anxious at the sighting.

“I felt I had witnessed something very hard to dismiss as a weather balloon or some obvious type of aircraft. Shortly after the jet and object left my range of sight I saw three more jets and one helicopter going the same direction (in my opinion chasing the UFO). I also got another video of those other aircraft. I would like to show the video to an aviation expert and maybe get an explanation. I’m uploading to MUFON hoping for answers.”

New Hampshire MUFON Field Investigator Breann Smith is investigating. Lincoln is a town in Grafton County, New Hampshire, population 1,662. Please remember that most UFO sightings can be explained as something natural or man-made. The above quotes were edited for clarity. Please report UFO activity to MUFON.com.

This object was recorded over several states and news says it was headed straight for Lake Michigan which is a perfect hiding place for an underwater alien base. This could be a meteorite, but it also could be an alien craft trying to camouflage as a meteor so that eyewitnesses and cameras operators will dismiss it.

There are two reports of this craft being hauled on a trailer. One of them also has a video, and says its probably headed to Area 51. As you can see, this is an all new video of a disk being carried by military personal with a police escort. The disk is huge, about 10 meters a gross and stands on three legs. These two reports back up each other and are proof it occurred.

Some people will ask, if its a UFO, why don't they fly it where they have got to go? Because if it was recently traded from aliens to humans, like in the past, it takes a lot of time to practice flying these things to get the hand of it. Also the USAF don't have UFO pilots just hanging around doing nothing. The last thing the USAF wants is a UFO crash in the middle of some city because a pilot thought he could handle it, but was wrong.

Also, if it wasn't a UFO, then why are they hiding it by transporting it at midnight?

As you can see from the closeups, these are not jets. They are UFOs and one of them is making a trail behind it to disguise itself as a jet. The second one in following the first. Excellent capture that proves that UFOs wont to manipulate what you think you see.

This meteor shaped UFO was caught following the space station today on live cam. What happened is I was watching and then the were switching cameras and went to the switching camera screen, and when they came back using a different camera, a UFO was right there in plain sight. The NASA guy operating the camera most have been watching it and accidentally allowed the live cam to get a good view of it. The UFO had perfectly matched its speed with the space station. I really wish they had not stopped showing it, but it switched to the changing camera screen again and then was gone.

Alien have a recorded history of studying humans for thousand maybe millions of years. To do this, few would be brave enough to volunteer, so alien have to do it the hard way...abduct the subjects. This way they can keep track of data and how things effect them over time. Most of the time a person in not abducted once, but many times over the lifetime of the individual. Often victims are implanted with a small piece of technology that tracks, monitors and even influences the person. Watch this fantastic 59 min video and believe me when I say, it will change your thought on abduction forever.

This UFO was found byParanormal Crucible of Youtube. It shows a UFO shooting across the sun, but may be very close to the SOHO image satellite, so it may only be about 100+ meters long. The object doesn't seem to move like a ship, but seems almost alive in its behavior. I have long believed that animals, intelligent or otherwise could be living in space like animals live in water. They may not be carbon base life forms, but its seems that the activity around the SOHO images and those of the space station would concur with my conclusion.

I altered the photo to show that it has a solid outside, not just a white glowing object, but it has a surface area.

Brilliant Fireball Streaks Over Milwaukee, Wows Skywatchers (Videos)

Brilliant Fireball Streaks Over Milwaukee, Wows Skywatchers (Videos)

A brilliant, bright-green meteor blazed through the sky just north of Milwaukee early this morning (Feb. 6), and likely sprinkled space rocks into Lake Michigan.

The falling space rock likely burned up in the sky about 10 to 20 miles (16 to 32 kilometers) north of Milwaukee, or about 100 miles (160 km) north of Chicago, according to the American Meteorological Society (AMS). More than 220 people have filed reports with the AMS claiming to have seen the fireball at about 1:25 a.m. CST (2:25 a.m. EST/0725 GMT), according to the NASA Meteor Watch Facebook page.

Most of the eye-witness reports came from people in and around Chicago and Milwaukee, but reports have also come in from witnesses in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Iowa, New York, Kentucky, Minnesota and Ontario, according to the AMS website. At least a dozen videos of the fireball racing through the sky have appeared online or have been sent to the AMS, Mike Hankey, operations manager for AMS, told Space.com. [5 Amazing Fireballs Caught on Video]

One video of the fireball was captured by Jim Dexter of the Lisle Police Department in Lisle, Illinois. Dexter saw the bright flash moving through the sky, and quickly turned on the dashboard camera in his car to capture the event.

A very bright meteor blazed through the skies over Lake Michigan at around 1:25 a.m. local time on Feb. 6, 2017. The fireball's flight was captured by a camera on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

"In this profession, we see so many things that the public doesn't" get to see, Dexter said in a written statement from the Lisle Police Department. "Sometimes that's good sometimes that's bad. I'm just glad that in this instance I was able to capture this for everyone to see."

Another video of the fireball streaking through the sky was captured by a camera on the roof of the University of Wisconsin-Madison's atmospheric, oceanic and space sciences building. The various videos of the event reveal that the meteor was exceptionally bright, which means it qualifies as a "fireball."

"Cameras in the region indicate that the meteor originated 62 miles [100 lm] above West Bend, Wisconsin and moved northeast at about 38,000 miles per hour [61,155 km/h]," a post from the NASA Meteor Watch Facebook page states. The meteor appears to have broken up into smaller pieces "about 21 miles [34 km] above Lake Michigan, approximately 9 miles [14 km] east of the town of Newton," the post says.

The meteor also created a sonic boom, which occurs when an object moves faster than sound waves in Earth's atmosphere. Hankey said meteorites create a sonic boom only when they remain intact long enough to travel to relatively low altitudes, where Earth's atmosphere is sufficiently dense. Most fireball meteors do not create a sonic boom, Hankey said; they burn up or break up into small pieces before they reach those low altitudes.

The sonic boom created by this fireball was "recorded on an infrasound station in Manitoba [Canada], some 600 miles [965 km] away," according to the NASA Meteor Watch page, indicating that the explosive breakup of the meteor released at least the energy equivalent of 10 tons of TNT.  (Hankey noted that people who heard a noise as the meteor moved overhead could have been hearing the sonic boom or the explosion of the rock.)

All of this information has helped meteor scientists get a better understanding of what this falling space rock looked like before it hit the atmosphere. It was likely an asteroid fragment "weighing at least 600 pounds [272 kg] and 2 feet [0.6 meters] in diameter," according to the NASA Meteor Watch page. Hankey said he thinks that's a low estimate for the meteor's size.

Based on radar data, it is likely that bits of the meteor reached the ground (these are called meteorites), Hankey said. However, the space rocks would have been sprinkled over Lake Michigan, which means they can't be collected for study, he added.

A meteor large enough to leave meteorites on the ground typically flies over the U.S. about three or four times per year, Hankey said.

The meteor also might have been spotted via radar by the National Weather Service's Milwaukee office. The office tweeted a radar picture showing the possible location of the meteor over Lake Michigan at 1:31 a.m. CST (0731 GMT). Sarah Marquardt, a meteorologist at the Milwaukee office, told Space.com that the radar instruments likely identified the space rock as it broke up into very small pieces. The radar instruments are designed to detect primarily water droplets, but the radar showed that the object or objects in that area were not made of ice or water, she said.

If you have seen a fireball, you can report it to the AMS here.

Are light columns over city a sign something's about to happen at Large Hadron Collider?

Are light columns over city a sign something's about to happen at Large Hadron Collider?

STRANGE columns of light seen hanging above a city skyline could be a sign something awful is about to be started by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), a conspiracy theorist has warned.

Video of the bizarre event over Busan in South Korea, is being shared on line, with the footage being jumped on by alien chasers with off-the-wall theories of what it could be.

According to local news reports, the lights were above the city for three consecutive nights and witnessed by hundreds of people.

Scott C Waring, editor of ufosightingsdaily.com has his views on the astonishing sight.

He blogged: "I am however worried... about it being caused by CERN. The last thing we want is a black hole to form that would eat the earth from inside out.

"This could be CERN messing around again."

The Large Hadron Collider, run by the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) at Geneva on the French-Swiss border, is the world’s largest and most powerful machine and is used to collide particles at close to the speed of light in a bid to discover more about physics and the possibility of parallel universes.

The curious machine developed across a 16-mile ring of superconducting magnets has had critics before amid claims it could inadvertently create a black hole that may swallow up the world, and it at the centre of many unfounded conspiracy theories that this could be about to happen.

The Large Hadron Collider could have caused lights in South Korea, claims a crazy conspiracy.

Some of the most extreme conspiracy theories even claim the LHC is being used by satanists to open a portal to bring the Devil back to Earth.

CERN, of course denies all such claims and says it could only create tony "quantum" black holes, which would be perfectly safe.

However, Mr Waring speculated over other, equally bizarre theories for the Busan phenomena, including the arrival of aliens.

He said: "Similar pillar lights have been seen all over the world for unknown reasons.

"Scientists try to explain it, but it seems few scientists can settle down on one theory and this amazing and beautiful phenomenon continues to go unexplained.

"Could they be caused by a fleet of UFOs? Or are they light beings, watching over an area together? Maybe, but it looks natural, like the Aurora Borealis.

Scott C Waring

"Like it’s a cosmic connection between the Earth and the rest of the universe."

But another claim is much more mundane.

The Busan Regional Weather Bureau said the lights in the sky were caused by strong lighting on squid fishing boats in the sea at the time that were reflected by ice crystals within the clouds, creating the strange effect.

Eum Ki-cheol, of the weather bureau, said: "(The light) is reflecting on the cloud or something like that, from the side we see, the light is said to be a 'light pole' because it looks like a pole.

He said the phenomenon is sometimes seen on the east coast, where squid catches are frequent.

UFO hoax buster Scott Brando, of ufoofinterest.org, agreed with this explanation.

He provided an image from the footage which showed the columns directly above the fishing boat lights below.

He said: "Several boat lights being reflected off the bottom of the clouds were responsible for the appearance of these light columns."

EXCLUSIVE: I have PROVED an ALIEN UFO landed on earth, claims scientist

EXCLUSIVE: I have PROVED an ALIEN UFO landed on earth, claims scientist

A CHEMIST claims to have proved an alien spacecraft landed on earth, after investigating a perplexing case for nearly 40 years.

Dr Erol faruk claims to have compelling evidence a UFO landed in Delphos, Kansas, 40 years ago.

Dr Erol Faruk has published the findings of his investigation into a substance left on the ground after a famous UFO sighting in a book which has concluded extraterrestrial activity is the only explanation.

In self-published work, The Compelling Scientific Evidence for UFOs, the British-born chemist of Turkish heritage, examined in detail the Delphos UFO case seen in Kansas, USA, on the evening of November 2 1971.

It is considered by some alien investigators as one of the most compelling UFO cases on record - due to the scorched ring left in the ground - allegedly when the UFO landed.

The witness was Ron Johnson, 16, who was tending sheep on his family's farm with dog Snowball, at about 7pm, when he spotted a six to eight feet diameter mushroom-shaped UFO appearing in the night sky.

It was described as having multi-coloured lights, and hovering about 75 feet away among trees at just a few feet above ground.

It then ascended with a blinding light.

He alerted his parents who saw it disappearing from view.

But, the family found a glowing ring on the ground where it had landed, and a similar material on trees nearby.

The family said the glow "felt strange, like a slick crust, as if the soil was crystallised," and Mrs Johnson was left with a numbing anaesthetic sensation on her hand after touching it.

Samples of soil, which was said to have a profound water repellant nature from within the ring were sent for analysis and stored in a number of laboratories.

Another witness also came forward, a Lester Ensbarger from Minneapolis, who advised Deputy Sheriff Leonard Simpson that at 7.30 pm the same night, he saw a bright light descending in the sky in Delphos.

According to website ufocasebook.com: "The experience of Ron Johnson is still considered as one of the best documented 'ground trace' UFO cases of the past century, and is still unexplainable by any conventional or earthly means."

Dr Faruk, who admits to a lifelong interest in the UFO phenomenon, focussed his work on investigating the chemical make up of the soil from the ring.

He was able to obtain some of the stored solid after requesting it while based at Nottingham University.

The hovering object of presently unknown origin appears to have contained within its periphery an aqueous solution of an unstable compound whose likely sole function would be light emission.

Dr Erol faruk

He wrote: "Placing water onto the affected soil was very like placing it onto a glass surface, with the water spontaneously forming into droplets sitting on the surface."

Although, he remained unable to fully identify the soil compound, he claimed to detect "a highly water-soluble organic compound which is potentially chemiluminescent”.

This could have been responsible for the alleged glow seen at the time, he said.

Dr Faruk concluded there were three possible explanations - a hoax, the ring was in fact a fairy ring - a natuarlly occurring ring of toadstools, or a genuine alien space ship had been seen.

He said a hoax was unlikely due to the unusual characteristics of the compound, and its elongation towards the wind direction on the night.

He also ruled out a fungal ring, claiming the "water-soluble alkali metal salt of an organic carboxylic acid" found in the compound would not be produced by a fungi.

This, he said meant the conclusion of a genuine UFO sighting was the most favourable.

He wrote: "A picture begins to emerge as to what possibly happened that evening.

"Some of the solution was deposited into the ground while the object positioned itself under a tree (to possibly avoid observation from the air).

"Once enough of this solution was deposited, the object departed after which the Johnson family approached the ring area."

The book is based largely on a scientific research paper Dr Faruk wrote for publication in a number of scientific journals, but his publication was rejected.

Dr Faruk claims that although his report deals with "physical and chemical evidence" as required, he was told it was investigating an "inappropriate" subject matter.

A MYSTERIOUS GREEN COMET IS HEADING OUR WAY

A MYSTERIOUS GREEN COMET IS HEADING OUR WAY

700_d568c43ff7655dbb6a65b69b3352da7b.jpg?v=1486502529

In the early hours of Saturday morning, a green physically ancient comet will be visible as it passes 7.4 million miles from Earth. Comet 45P/ Honda-Pajdusakova, named after three astronomers, will be visible with binoculars or a small telescope between Thursday and Sunday.

The comet will travel through Ophiuchus, Corona Borealis, Bootes, Canes Venatici, Coma Berenices and finally Leo. The comet will appear bluish-green with a tail. 45P will pass 0.0831 AU (12.430.000KM; 7.720.000 miles from Earth on February 11th and could even be visible to the naked eye. The comet was last seen New Year's Eve as it began its path past the Northern Hemisphere and it will become visible again as it swings back past the sun. The comets maximum brightness will be at a magnitude of 6.

This is the eighth closest comet since 1950, and it is due it its extremely proximity to Earth that spectators will be able to see the comet. The comet was discovered in 1948 and has previously approached Earth in 2011, and it has also come very close to Jupiter which caused changes in the comet's orbit. Many believe that Comet 45P shows a coming year of chaos in 2017. Christian’s believe that the comet will split as it passes the Sun and that half of 45P will collide with Earth. The Bible directly warns about this approaching comet stating; 'And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves. Men's hearts will faint them for fear for looking after those things which are coming upon the earth, for the powers of heaven will be shaken.'

Christian, Paul Begley warned “we have to take this seriously, ” He says that the Lord has directly warned him that this comet brings chaos and will be a bad start to a bad year. Others believe the comet is the second coming of Jesus. As this comet will be swinging back past the sun at a considerable force, it is possible that there could be a split in its core. According to NASA, the public has nothing to worry about. However, they also agree that they cannot guarantee there will be no variations from its forecasted path.

As meteor lights Midwestern skies, Lisle cop captures 'giant green-lighted orb' on dashcam

As meteor lights Midwestern skies, Lisle cop captures 'giant green-lighted orb' on dashcam

Megan Crepeau, John Hector and Leonor VivancoChicago Tribune

As a regular on the night shift, Lisle police Officer Jim Dexter is used to seeing the occasional shooting star or lunar eclipse, though mostly he's a witness to what he called “the odd behavior of animals and humans.”

University of Wisconsin video of fireball

But early Monday morning, Dexter was on routine patrol near Interstate 88 when he saw “a giant green-lighted orb” streaking across the sky. He made sure his dash camera had captured the fireball, then told other officers on patrol.

Meteor caught on camera

Soon after, the National Weather Service was tweeting his video of a meteor that lit up the skies across the Midwest around 1:30 a.m.

“It was too good not to share,” Dexter said. “I thought about how few people actually saw it, but then there’s the amount of people I got to share it with.”

The American Meteor Society, which monitors meteor showers, said it had received more than 380 reports of sightings Monday.

“The fireball was seen primarily from Illinois and Wisconsin, but witnesses from Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Iowa, New York, Kentucky, Minnesota and Ontario (Canada) also reported the event,” the society said on its website.

The society said preliminary information from witness reports suggests the meteor ended its flight in Lake Michigan between the shores of Sheboygan, Wis. and Manitowoc, Wis.

The fireball seen Monday was similar in size and brightness to another observed in 2003 in Park Forest, where meteorite fragments fell onto south suburban homes, said Philipp Heck, the Robert A. Pritzker associate curator of meteoritics and polar studies at the Field Museum. In 2010, a smaller and dimmer fireball was visible from Chicago and landed near Mifflin, Wis., he said.

A meteor forms when a meteoroid — which is a fragment of an asteroid — enters Earth’s atmosphere after orbiting the sun. The atmosphere’s hot air helps the meteor evaporate, and what ends up on the ground or in the water — called a meteorite — is much smaller than what initially entered the atmosphere, Heck said. About 60,000 meteorites, which can be as small as pebbles, have been discovered on Earth, and some are on display at the Field Museum.

“It’s unusual that it was visible from a metropolitan area,” said Heck, adding that most fly over unpopulated areas or over oceans.

Although the National Weather Service’s office in Green Bay said the meteor was accompanied by a sonic boom that shook houses in the region, Heck said the meteor was not big enough to cause damage.

Weather radar, seismometers, video footage of the fireball and eyewitness reports will help determine how big the meteor was and how fast it traveled, according to Heck.

Officer Patrick Murphy of the Chillicothe Police Department near Peoria, was alone in his squad car in the middle of his patrol shift when he saw the green fireball as he was passing a traffic light. His dashcam, which is constantly recording, captured the meteor.

“It definitely caught me off guard a little bit. Obviously, I was not expecting to see that,” Murphy said. “I figured it was probably a meteor because I don’t know what else it could possibly be.”

He said he drove to the northeast part of town where it looked like the meteor had fallen, but there were no flames anywhere.

Murphy, who reported the meteor sighting to his sergeant, said the fireball surprised him. He said he has seen falling stars but “nothing this big, nothing even close to this big.”

Blazing green fireball in the sky caught on police dash cam

Blazing green fireball in the sky caught on police dash cam

A bright green fireball lit up the US Midwest, generating plenty of eyewitness reports and dramatic camera footage.

Police car dash cameras are used to monitor situations when an officer pulls over a vehicle, but an officer in Illinois used one to capture an outstanding look at a massive green fireball cutting through the night sky early on Monday morning.

The American Meteor Society collected over 200 eyewitness reportsof the event from Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Canada. The bulk of the reports came from Illinois and Wisconsin.

Witness Heidi B described the view: "Reminded me of   a northern light in color and vibrancy but acted like a meteor." Some reports mention a very loud booming sound. Drew N writes, "It was pretty huge. Reminded me of the asteroid that fell through the atmosphere in Russia that was all over the internet." That meteor event occurred in 2013 and created a damaging shock wave.

The dash-cam footage of the meteor comes from the Lisle Police Department. The video quality isn't great, but you can clearly see the streak of light entering from the top of the screen. It quickly expands into an impressive green explosion.

A camera located at the University of Wisconsin got a different view of the meteor. It comes into view at a sharp angle before lighting up the sky in blinding fashion.

The American Meteor Society estimates the meteor's trajectory likely took it into Lake Michigan. That means any possible debris from the landing would have ended up under the water.

NJ has had more than 130 reported UFO sightings since Jan. 2016 (PHOTOS)

Freehold - 5/28/16NJ has had more than 130 reported UFO sightings since Jan. 2016 (PHOTOS)

freehold-5-28.jpeg?w=630&h=420&zc=2&cc=000000&a=t
“Saw a large triangular craft and other small round craft in the sky. Likely not of this earth.”

“It was perfectly still, hovering right over a highway.”

“White ball of light flying very fast then disappeared.”

If there’s life beyond this world, they must love the Garden State.

More than 120 sightings of unidentified flying objects were reported in 2016 throughout New Jersey, according to the National UFO Reporting Center. In 2017, there’s been more reported UFO sightings than there have been weeks.

Many of them cite quick bursts of light, or “orbs” of different colors and sizes that lingered just long enough to be captured in a photo. But others specifically point to physical aircraft that look unlike anything they’ve seen before.

“When I was in the Air Force, we chased them regularly,” Medford resident George Filer, New Jersey State Director of the Mutual UFO Network, told New Jersey 101.5. “A lot of us in the military or intelligence agencies chased or saw UFOs and believe in their existence.”

According to Filer, most citizen reports are submitted during the warmer months when people are more likely to be outside. He said in the summer, an estimated 1,000 UFO sightings are reported per month nationally.

As director of Fringe New Jersey, which prides itself on examining “the strange & the unusual, the paranormal, and the impossible,” chemist Sean Wasylyk has no doubt in the existence of unidentified aerial phenomena.

He claims an overwhelming majority of UFO sightings are likely to amount to nothing, due to New Jersey’s extensive military presence and number of airports. But it’s the other 5 percent or so of reports that keeps him curious.

“I’d love to say none of these are real, but I think some of them have some legitimacy. I think there’s something real there,” said Wasylyk, a Hamilton resident. “It enriches lives knowing that there’s something we don’t know. Let’s figure it out.”

UFOs, though, don’t necessarily have to link to life on another planet, he said. Perhaps people are seeing the experimentation of secret military aircraft. Or some genius somewhere is showing off their private technology that no one yet knows about.

“If you’re an alien culture and you’re that advanced that you’ve gotten inter-dimensional or inter-planetary space travel, and you don’t want to be seen, you’re not going to be seen,” he added.

Both of Wasylyk’s parents were scientists; he was raised to believe anything unless science proved it wrong.

As of Friday afternoon, the National UFO Reporting Center listed six reports out of New Jersey in 2017. The most recent, out of Cinnaminson, cited a “chevron-shaped UFO hovering over trees.”

In all, the database lists 2,047 UFO sightings in New Jersey.

Fireball UFOs in New York State

Fireball UFOs in New York State
new-york-skies

Columnist Cheryl Costa crunches the numbers of fireball UFOs in New York state.

Fireball UFOs were first reported in the American Southwest in the years following World War II. Their first appearance was greatly troubling to the United States Army and Air Force for two reasons. First, the green fireballs could outrun any military aircraft we could put in the air. Second, the green fireballs were primarily seen loitering around nuclear research facilities like Los Alamos National Laboratory and Sandia Base (Later renamed the Sandia National Laboratory).

The situation was of so much concern from the defense establishment that the United States military launched a secret research effort in 1948 named “Project Twinkle” in an effort to investigate and research the green fireball phenomena. Project Twinkle ended in 1951.

From 1951-1990, fireball UFO reports averaged less than a dozen per year nationally. Then in the early 1990s, reports began to slowly head upward. Suddenly in 1998 the number of orange fireball UFO sightings dramatically increased to a few hundred per year and leveling for a little over 10 years. Again in 2010 there was another intense increase in orange fireball sighting reports. The chart below illustrates the scale of the fireball UFO trend from 1990-2016. Oddly, the number of fireball sightings has begun to drop off. If history is any indication, I expect the sightings to be between 300-600 sightings per year.

fireball-1990-2016-nuforc

Nationally from 2001-2015, using both combined NUFORC and MUFON data, fireball UFOs are about 7.2 percent, or 11,066 sightings, of the total nationwide UFO sightings. Fireball UFO sightings rank sixth in UFO sighting shapes.

From 2001-2015, New York state had 430 fireball sightings, or 3.9 percent of the total national fireball sightings. Of New York state’s 5,141 UFO sightings for the same period, fireball UFOs were 8.9 percent of the total.

ny-2001-2015-fireballs

New York state’s fireball UFO sighting reports also consistently tracks with the national trend.

For years UFO investigators weren’t sure what to make of the fireball reports. In many cases, they were content to write the fireballs off as drifting Chinese lanterns. Over the past decade, as the sighting reports began increasing in volume, investigators began to take fireball reports more seriously.

Typically they have a red-orange appearance. They are known to hover and to move at great speed. They’ve been seen at tree-top levels before whizzing off. Some of them simply wink out, only to reappear in another location moments later. Still, others have been known to simply dart around.

A few years ago in Auburn, an observer watched in awe as a fireball flew over his house at about 200 feet from the ground at high speed. He turned around astounded, only to witness two more following right behind the first fireball.

Last year, UFO researcher and author Thomas Conwell and I discussed fireball sightings that each of us had witnessed. One thing we both agreed on was the fact that the light emitted from the fireball had a digital quality to it. The fireball clearly had the pulse of a mechanism.

In lieu of looking at a few recent New York UFO reports, I offer an alternative. The National UFO Reporting Center has a website dedicated to fireball UFO reports. To view the website, click here.

If you are interested in joining a monthly UFO discussion group in the Onondaga County area, drop Cheryl an email Blogger@CherylCosta.com. If you have a UFO sighting to report, you can use either one of the two national database services: nuforc.org or mufon.com. Both services respect confidentiality.

Cheryl Costa would love to hear the when, where and what of your New York sighting. Email it to NYSkies@DragonLadyMedia.com. The names of witnesses will be omitted to protect their privacy.

The Night of the Shape Shifting Humanoids (Part 1)

 Red Pill Junkie

Sooner or later… it happens.

If you develop a passion for the UFO phenomenon for as long as I have, sooner or later you wake up to notice them saucers are not as sexy as they used to be. Aerial sightings, photos of disk-shaped or triangular objects, they all start to feel irrelevant. Even the landing cases, with their trace evidence on the ground, eventually lose their allure.

Perhaps UFOs, like any other dependency, cause the user to slowly grow a certain ‘resistance’, forcing you to ‘increase the dosage’ in order to get that thrilling buzz…

Thus, the seasoned saucer addict ends up getting his kicks from the hardcore stuff: The close encounters of the 3rd kind, in which witnesses end up in hair-raising, hand-trembling proximity with the enigmatic entities in (apparent) control of the phenomenon. And make no mistake, my fellow junkies! When it comes to this old Fortean fiend, the weirder and more nonsensical the case, the sah-weeter!

And so it is, my dear Coppertops, that I present to you a prime-time, vintage humanoid encounter so head-scratchingly bizarre, you’ll probably end up with a mean case of the munchies: The Conil case.

The Location

The Spanish province of Cádiz, part of the autonomous community of Andalusia, has always had its fair share of exotic visitors. Its capital of the same name was originally founded by the Phoenicians, and was subsequently occupied by the Carthaginians, Romans and Arabs, until the latter were expelled by the Catholic kingdom of Castilla. Because of its enviable geographical position, Cádiz has always been a crossroads of civilizations, and its future will probably remain closely tied to the sea just as it has always been for thousands of years; although instead of Phoenician traders, Roman conquerors or Ottoman invaders, the local economy now depends on attracting tourists with dollars or euros to spend.

The Light

Our story takes place in the coastal town of Conil de la Frontera –Conil for short– on the night of September 29th, 1989. Although to be precise, our story began weeks earlier, with 2 couples of local youngsters: Loli Bermúdez and Pedro Sánchez, Isabel Sánchez and Pedro González (relationship between the members is not entirely clear) who were taking a placid stroll along the ‘playa de los Bateles’ or ‘Bateles beach’ (“Batel” is a traditional local term for a small, oar-propelled boat). The age of the kids varied between 17 and 23 years old, and just when they were enjoying the cool breeze from the sea and each other’s company, at around 8:30 or 9:00 pm, they suddenly noticed something odd: A glowing, round, reddish-orange object, as big as the full moon, which appeared to be standing still, some 200 meters directly above the Roche cape, approximately 5 kilometers away from their viewing position.

The amazed group contemplated the ‘light’ for around half an hour, until it silently moved toward the horizon and was out of sight. Driven by curiosity, the young witnesses decided to return the next night at the same hour, equipped with a pair of 7×50 binoculars, to see if by any chance the object would return; sure enough, the ‘red moon’ was punctual to the meeting, and performed exactly the same as the night before. The binoculars allowed the adolescents to discern 4 white dots in a square formation at the center of the glowing circle, like the flamboyant button missing from a god’s jacket.

The ‘button‘ would emit a random flash from time to time, and then it was lost out of sight towards the western horizon, after completing it’s indecipherable ‘mission’. The same bizarre operation was repeated for 14 or 15 consecutive nights, always leaving around 9:30; the kids would always remain up until 10, in hope the light would make a second come-back; it never did.

The Encounter

By that time, the witnesses’ families and others in their inner circle were aware of what the youngsters had been witnessing for a whole fortnight –whether they all gave credence to their testimony or not is clear. What we do know is that on the night of September 29th, a 5th member had joined the group of intrepid UFO hunters: Lázaro, the brother of Isabel, and the youngest member of the party.

As it was by now their routine, they all sat on the beach at 8:30, directly in front of the Los Corales bar. The sea was calm and the coast was practically empty, with no boat in sight (we’ll get back to this on part 2). Their approximate distance from their position to the bar was around 300 meters. And they waited.

They didn’t have to wait long. Aside from their old friend, the “red moon,” which had faithfully appeared in its accustomed position, for the first time the witnesses also saw a new development: What looked like a bright white ‘semicircle’ coming from the sea; with the help of their binoculars they could observe, at the center of it, a group of ‘red lights’ forming a sort of triangle. This new UFO silently flew past above their heads, moving toward the town, leaving the group amazed, and excitedly commenting the impressions of the event among themselves.

But then a third, blaring light appeared right over them, seemingly so high or bright they couldn’t discern any sort of shape. The witnesses noticed that when the UFO above them made three consecutive flashes, the red UFO at Roche cape would respond with two, and so on and so forth. A sort of ‘communication’ between these two objects seemed to be taking place, which lasted for around half an hour.

While they were fascinatingly observing this luminous ‘exchange’, something else caught the attention of our young witnesses: At around 9 pm, they noticed two strange figures standing by the beach’s shoreline; their presence raised the alarms of the UFO hunters, not only because of the literally ‘alien’ appearance of the entities –identical in appearance, almost 7 feet tall, covered with white flowing ‘cloaks’ whose ends reached all the way down to the water, and with round, featureless white heads with no hair– but because their arrival had not been detected by the youngsters; almost as if they had suddenly appeared out of nowhere.

Sketch of the ‘cloaked’ figures observed by the witnesses

One of the girls of the group, understandably unnerved by this observation, proposed to the rest of them to leave. Pedro González urged his companions to remain calm, suggesting the two ‘cloaked’ individuals could be some ‘pranksters’; perhaps two of their town neighbors had decided to play a joke on them by –rather lamely– dressing themselves as ‘ghosts’ with white sheets? The idea, however improbable –if nothing else because the tunics of the two beings were so bright they almost looked as if glowing– momentarily swayed the fears of the witnesses, who decided to stay.

But suddenly, the two entities started to move out of the water, towards them. Their gait was awkward and laborious, as if they were unable to bend their knees, and while they walked they kept their arms firmly on each side of their torso. Their long clothes covered their feet, as well as their hands.

The approaching figures finally managed to trigger the fight-or-flight response in all the members of the group. Panicked, they started to run away –in all honesty, could ANYONE blame them?

The group broke down their escape, though, once they realized the beings were not in pursuit of them. Instead, they had stopped and turned on their axis to face the sea, apparently looking in the direction of the ‘red moon’, which had faithfully remained on its fixed position the whole time. The group of witnesses miraculously controlled their nerves, and decided to remain observing the amazing sight from a cautionary distance (approximately some 30 meters or 100 feet away from the figures).

The unfolding of otherworldly events on this fateful night were far from over…

The Transformation

While the two cloaked visitors kept their attention toward the glowing red object in the distance, the young UFO hunters observed something akin to a ‘shooting star’ on the night sky: a small, white-blue light the size of a tennis ball falling toward the beach, yet vanishing or ‘turning off’ just 2 feet or so before crashing over the heads of the entities. As if on cue by the disappearance of the orb, the two humanoids proceeded to seat on the beach, with their backs kept stiffly straight, while at the same time swiftly digging into the sand to build a sort of u-shaped wall surrounding them; once completed, they presently lied on their backs of this makeshift fortress.

muralla-1-570x384.jpg

In-situ reconstruction of the ‘trench’ built by the beings, in which they laid down

If the purpose of the sand ‘trench’ was to obstruct the sight of the humanoids from uninvited interlopers, it was only partially successful; let’s not forget our original witnesses were still at the scene and quite capable to observe the prostate figures, although with more difficulty. Pedro González was once again forced to calm the nerves of the more jitterish among them, while the rest kept passing on the binoculars to better watch the bizarre spectacle, which proceeded to yet another unexpected act.

Soon after the beings lied down on their backs, they proceeded to pass around them a bright, small sphere of a cyan-blue color –perhaps, we could speculate, the same orb which had fallen down moments before– although this time it seemed as small as a ping-pong ball in the eyes of our young witnesses, who observed this strange ‘ball game’ performed among the humanoids around a half-dozen times or so, until Pedro González –the one who had bravely convinced the rest of the friends to stick around– without any warning tossed the binoculars to the ground and started to flee the scene. The other Pedro (Sánchez) quickly intercepted him to know what was going on, and that’s when the terrified young man informed his friend he had observed a third figure at the scene, at the foot of the other two entities. This new humanoid was considerably taller (around ten foot, according to their testimony), clad on a dark, tight-fitting suit and displaying an enormous pear-shaped head. The two young men decided not to tell the rest about the ‘giant’ and returned to their friends, but when Pedro González took the binoculars, he could not longer find the enormous humanoid near the two others, who still remained lying on their backs and passing the little blue sphere back and forth between each other.

The strangest act in this alien stage play the young men and women had been observing, was about to commence.

Suddenly the little blue light disappeared, and a few seconds later the two beings got up from the sand. To the amazement of our witnesses, though, they no longer retained their original appearance: The white, cloaked figures had somehow changed into what looked like a human couple! The male was tall (around 7 feet, which was the original height of the white beings) had long blond hair and was wearing dark jeans and a checkered shirt; the woman was slightly shorter than the man, her hair was also long but dark in color, and wore a thin blouse and long skirt.

Without saying any word, they turned and started walking toward the town, one in front of the other, without even bothering to ever once look at the startled group of youngsters who had bore witness to their entire transformation; a transformation, it should be pointed out, that for some reason wasn’t 100% perfect: The witnesses later revealed to the researchers who went to Conil to investigate the case, that although the features of the ‘female changeling’ were very beautiful and perfectly ordinary, the forehead of his male companion on the other hand was abnormally prominent. How could someone looking like an extra in a cheesy sci-fi flick could go around unnoticed in a tourist town??

The Giant

Just when they were about to reach one of the Conil’s dark alleys, the witnesses’ attention was shifted once again toward the beach, where they could see above the water a small, white cloud coming from the coast toward them at great speed. When the compact ‘cloud’ reached the shore it stopped and rapidly evaporated, and at that moment is when Loli –who was using the binoculars– alerted her friends about the presence of a dark figure near the water. Pedro González snatched the field glasses out of the girl’s hand, and confirmed it was indeed the same enormous being he had seen before.

The black giant with the pear-shaped head stood motionless in front of the young, baffled witnesses, until it quickly moved rapidly away toward the west. As if this wasn’t already strange enough, the humanoid –according to the witnesses– wasn’t even ‘touching’ the ground! Rather, its feet hovered some 8 inches above the sand, and as it floated away its arms were kept firmly on each side of its torso.

The being’s departure elicited a strange response among the members of the UFO party: The oldest and the youngest in the group –Pedro G. and Lázaro– suddenly started to run in pursuit of the giant. Asked later why they reacted in such a way, they couldn’t give a proper explanation; their chase turned out fruitless though, since no matter how hard they ran, the giant moved (or ‘floated’) even faster. When the two were about 50 or 60 meters away from the being, they finally heeded the desperate shouts of their companions pleading them to stop, which they did.

Sketch of the black-suited ‘giant’ observed by the witnesses

It was at that moment when the giant also stopped moving and turned its head toward Pedro and Lázaro. Its black eyes, huge as hen eggs, robbed the two of whatever courage they still possessed, and even though the being’s attitude was not menacing, it somehow gave the impression to the young men that it was warning them not to follow any further. At last they returned to their frantic friends and let the giant lose itself in the night.

With the couple nowhere to be seen, and the giant gone –was its purpose just to deviate the witnesses’ attention and prevent them not to chase the other beings?– the incredible events of the night were apparently over… or so they seemed.

The Aftermath

Graphic explaining the location of the sand trench in relation to the witnesses’ viewing position. It also shows the distance between the beach shore and the town

As the group of young men and women remained at the beach, excitedly commenting among themselves on what had just transpired at that humble location of the Cádiz province, they were able to witness one last unknown phenomenon around 10 pm: By the coast and heading from west to east, a small white light followed a silent, zigzagging trajectory, like a bouncing ball in one of those old sing-along children TV shows. A rather unimpressive finale, judging by the sort of spectacle preceding it.

Shortly after, an additional witness appeared on the beach and joined the group. Juan Bermúdez was an adult town resident –possibly related to Loli, one of the girls– correspondent for a local radio station as well as a painter; he had heard of his young neighbors’ nightly escapades at the Bateles beach, and as he had done on previous occasions decided to go there and see if anything interesting occurred –in a later interrogation with UFO investigator Bruno Cardeñosa, Bermúdez confessed he himself had actually had the chance to observe the giant humanoid on 3 previous separate occasions, during the first hour of dawn; if true, that would mean the Bateles beach had been the scene of extreme high strangeness even before the night of September 29th.

When the boys and girls told him what had happened, Bermúdez helped them investigate the area where the two cloaked humanoids had accomplished their incredible transformation. The group noticed the ‘trench’ the beings had built –which was approximately 2 meters wide by 1 meter long– showed discernible ‘scratch marks’ on the sand, as if it had been done by long and slender fingers.

conil-huellas-1-570x385.jpg

Reconstruction of the footprints left by the couple, compared with the size of an ordinary foot

But was even more interesting were the ‘footprints’ the beings had left on the beach as they made their escape toward the town. They were enormous: 18 inches long and 6 inches in their widest part, with a very prominent arc as well as a huge toe impression that seemed to go deeper than the rest of the foot. Which raises the question: When the young witnesses saw the ‘transmogrified’ alien couple walk out of the beach, why didn’t they notice such abnormal feet?

…Unless the image of the human couple wearing ordinary clothes was just an elaborate illusion, one that was nevertheless unable to conceal their actual imprints left in the sand? This might serve to explain why both set of footprints had exactly the same size, despite the fact the female walk-in was not as tall as her 7-foot companion.

Adding to the confusion was the fact the group also found many more footprints than they expected. Aside from the ones going from the ‘sand trench’ to the Conil, an action observed by the witnesses, 20 paces away from the trench there were imprints of the same size and characteristics, but going in several different directions and covering an area of approximately 10 feet in diameter. What’s confusing about this is the fact the 4 boys and girls NEVER observed the couple deviate from their straight line toward the town alley, so they couldn’t had the time to leave all those additional prints.

But if they didn’t do it, then who did?

Local newspaper running an article about the Conil encounter (October 5th, 1989)

The fantastic Conil encounter with what seemed to be shape-shifting humanoids took little time to garner attention from the local media. First through the radio station Juan Bermúdez worked for, and then via an article published by El Diario de Cádiz on October the 5th. On the second part on my retelling of this wonderful episode, we will explore what else transpired after debunkers attempted to shoot down the case. But far more interestingly, we will discover what happened after the enigmatic couple of alien infiltrators returned to the ‘scene of the crime’.

To be continued…

The Night of the Shape Shifting Humanoids (Part 2)

The Night of the Shape Shifting Humanoids (Part 2)

Greetings, fellow Coppertops! We continue with the chronicling of the Conil close encounter, when a group of 5 local kids witnessed all sorts of otherworldly phenomena at a beach in the coast of Cádiz, which included red-glowing UFOs, orbs of light, a 10-foot-tall levitating giant, and (last but not least) two cloaked entities who transformed themselves into a human-looking couple right in front of them. So strap in, because the high strangeness surrounding this remarkable case is far from over!

The Debunking

As we briefly mentioned by the end of part 1, it only took a few days until the incidents occurring on the night of September 29th, 1989 became a matter of public knowledge. After El Diario de Cádiz ran a story about the case on October 5th, members of the Spanish Group of UFO Investigations (GEIFO in the Spanish acronym), a skeptically-oriented organization, visited Conil de la Frontera to conduct a field research and interview the witnesses; they asked the same local newspaper to publish their findings, which it did on October 16th.

diariodecadiz-16-10-1989-copia-1-570x635.jpeg

Cover of El Diario de Cádiz from October 16th, 1989, running the debunking explanation by the GEIFO group

The conclusion by GEIFO’s researchers? The whole episode had been nothing but a big misidentification caused by over-excited imagination. The red UFO observed by the group of local boys and girls for the past couple of weeks —“as big as the moon” according to their testimony– had actually been a British ship in charge of laying down underwater cable for the Telefónica phone company in that area, which was near the coast of Conil during the night in question according to their findings, and used ‘light signals’ to coordinate the work with ground personnel. The ‘aliens’, according to the skeptics, were two crew members of said vessel wearing scuba-diving equipment and covering themselves with blankets or towels, and the ‘white cloud’ they had observed coming down from the sea, was nothing but the wake left by a Zodiac boat they divers had used to reach the beach. Case closed, Scooby Doo!

“But wait!” you may be asking, “what about the trench the ‘divers’ dug out in the sand? What about the blue light they passed around each other while they were lying down on it? What about the TEN-FOOT-TALL GIANT which appeared after the couple walked to the town (leaving their ‘towels’ AND all their equipment behind?)?”

GEIFO’s answers to all these questions –and the way they left other questions unanswered– seem to be more incredible than the testimony of the witnesses itself: The trench was built by the divers because they wanted to ‘remove their gear in privacy’ –you know, instead of doing it much more easily onboard the British ship or the Zodiac?– or maybe because after a hard night’s work laying out cable, they wanted to spend a few hours under the Cádiz’s fair weather doing *ahem* ‘other things’ *wink wink*. The ‘orb’ they had on their hands was a mere torchlight, and the black-suited giant was another diver, possibly in charge to pilot the Zodiac boat (!)

So, in the eyes of the ‘scientifically-oriented’ investigators –the ones who think any sort of explanation, no matter how tenuous or downright improbable, is always better than entertaining the possibility of a truly anomalous event– the 5 Conil witnesses rather than being UFO hoaxers seeking publicity, were just a bunch of gullible idiots. I’ll leave you Coppertops to decide which is more insulting…

The Counter-Debunking

Juan José Benítez: Reporter, UFO investigator, author and globetrotter

5 months after GEIFO’s report had ‘satisfactorily’ solved the case –and quite possibly subjected the 5 witnesses to all sorts of ridicule in the process– investigator Juan José Benítez visited Conil to make a research of his own. Benítez is one of the most famous UFO hunters in Spain and has been instrumental in coaxing his government to declassify a good number of cases which were investigated by the Spanish Air Force. He has also traveled thousands of miles all across the globe to conduct field investigations and interview hundreds of witnesses, most of them humble townsfolk living in remote villages, who had never shared their testimony outside their circle of friends and family. He is a bestselling author not only in his home country but in all of Latin America, and it was in 1990 when he described his involvement on the Conil case in his book La Quinta Columna.

Benítez’s approach to put GEIFO’s theory to the test was simple and straightforward: The skeptics’ main argument was that the UFO observed by the witnesses had been one of two British vessels laying down underwater cable –this despite the boys’ insistence that during the night in question there was NO ship or boat on sight.

Benítez did corroborate the existence of two oceanographic ships, the British Enterprise Two and the C.S. Monarch, which had been hired by a Spanish subcontractor to conduct work for the Telefónica phone company. According to GEIFO, the Monarch had been the one near the coast on the night of September 29th; yet their first mistake was in stating the ship was laying down the cable, whereas in fact they were conducting preliminary prospecting of the littoral.

It took some hard work, but in the end Benítez managed to uncover 3 important pieces of the puzzle:

  • When the Monarch started working in the area (September 18) its position was 60 miles away from the coast, which was too far to have been able to be spotted from the beach (not to mention the witnesses started to observe the red UFO on the night of September 14th).
  • On the night of September 29th the meteorological report indicated the weather conditions were inadequate for any medium-to-large ship to even approach the coast, due to the strong winds winds mixed with the low tide and the littoral currents.
  • But the coup’ de grace came when Benítez was able to contact captain, J. A. B. Simkins –Chairman and Chief Executive of BT Marine, the oceanographic fleet which owned the Monarch– who on July of 1990 wrote him a letter stating the approximate position of their vessel during the night in question (36º 23′ N, 06º 44′ W), placing it 30 miles away from the Bateles beach. Consider how during the best viewing conditions, the horizon line on the sea only extends 8 miles.

And if that is not enough, here’s a link to Benítez’s own web page describing the Conil case, where if you scroll down you can find a scanned copy of Simkins’ letter. In it one can read the final nail in GEIFO’s coffin:

“[During our operation] (W)e would not have employed frogmen.”

Check. And mate.

As an aside note, Benítez also managed to discover (according to an article written by Bruno Cardeñosa published by the magazine Año Cero in 1996) that around the time of the incidents two individuals bearing the characteristics of the ‘changeling’ couple were lodging on a small guest house in Conil around the days of the encounter; these ‘tourists’ registered themselves using the passports of German citizens who, supposedly, hadn’t abandoned their country in those days –unfortunately, La Quinta Columna doesn’t mention this detail, nor can further information be found in Benítez’s website.

But wait, there’s more! Benítez also uncovered another interesting part to this mystery: On the nights from Sept 27th to Sept 30th, the military radar station located in Algeciras (Cádiz) suffered an inexplicable malfunction, which rendered the whole Conil area ‘dark’ during the period in which the alleged UFO activity and close encounter took place. Coincidence, or did someone (or something) was trying to avoid detection?

Benítez’s detective job showed GEIFO’s main argument failed to convincingly explain the events that took place at Conil. But although it proved the UFO was not a British oceanographic ship, and the humanoids were not British scuba divers, it can’t unfortunately substantiate the testimony of the witnesses and what they claimed they saw.

Corroboration to their fantastic story did take place, though; albeit indirectly and in the typical inconclusive manner in which the phenomenon tends to conduct itself…

The Return

How many UFO hunters, I wonder, feel as if they are doomed to always remain 2 steps behind their ‘prey’? Always trying to document cases, interview witnesses and collect whatever evidence remains AFTER the objects and their occupants take off or leave the area; but never having the chance, just for once, of actually be able to witness the high strangeness with their own eyes.

Well, for local UFO hunter Jesús Borrego López that was about to change when he decided to travel to Conil in search for more answers on October 15th. A police officer of 44 years old assigned to the Security and Control office of the Cádiz town hall, Borrego López easily managed to locate four of the witnesses (Loli, Isabel and the two Pedros) who politely accepted to answer his questions.

Once they finished talking at one of the witnesses’ home, the researcher asked them to accompany him to the Bateles beach, which they accepted even though it was already late at night. Once Borrego López was satisfied with his field survey, he invited the group of boys and girls to a local bar for a refreshment, where they remained lively discussing the incident.

It was around 10:35 pm when the group instantly fell silent, because they had all taken notice of a strange couple crossing in front of them toward the sea. Borrego López was the first to say “have you noticed the forehead of that man?”

The youngsters said nothing and kept looking at the odd individual and each other in total amazement. Borrego López insisted: “look at his height! He measures 2 meters tall, easily!”

The boys finally dared to open their mouth, confirming that was indeed the same ‘man’ and ‘woman’ they had observed leaving the Bateles beach after their ‘transformation’ inside the ‘sand trench’.

The male with the prominent cranium was walking 2 steps ahead of his female partner. Like the witnesses had described in their original testimony, he had long blond hair reaching up to his shoulders, and was wearing a denim attire which looked somewhat worn out and tightly fit. The woman was way above regular height (1.90 meters) and wore similar clothes as her less-conspicuous companion.

Borrego López and Pedro Sánchez quickly got up the table and left two of the witnesses behind, with the clear intention of intersecting the couple who were ahead of them by at least 150 meters.

“Visibility was perfect,” Borrego López reported later to Benítez, “despite the fact the streetlights at the marine promenade were turned off  (according to town hall’s regulations). But the night was very clear. There was a full moon and also low clouds reflecting the town’s illumination and lunar light over the sea.”

La Quinta Columna (The Fifth Column). The book where Benítez narrates (among many other encounter reports) the events surrounding the Conil case

Yet despite these optimal viewing conditions, and the fact the two UFO hunter and his young sidekick were keeping pace with the odd couple, the individuals suddenly vanished in front of Borrego López and Pedro’s very eyes. Bewildered, the two chasers looked in all directions, but their pursuants were nowhere to be found.

The unexpected disappearance raised goosebumps on both Pedro and the seasoned researcher, who had now become another witness of this incredible case. But the surprises were not over: When they both looked toward the east they noticed what looked like a ‘black dot’ the size of a soccer ball approaching rapidly from the sea shore.

Meanwhile the two other kids they had left at the bar joined them in time to observe the dark ‘ball’ which kept moving toward them at a preternatural speed. As it got nearer, the witnesses saw how its shape started to change; its trajectory became more erratic, at times looking as if it was floating above the ground, and at others as if it was being ‘yanked’ or ‘dragged’ by an invisible force.

The group continued to observe the mesmerizing vision, until they finally realized the incoming dark mass was actually a human figure; though its legs were moving so fast they were a mere blur.

When the ‘sprinter’ was just 60 meters away from the witnesses, it stopped. It was a woman! She was standing in front of the group very close to the water age, and without any warning she removed the upper portion of her clothes to reveal her female curves, and started walking toward the Roche cape, faraway in the west. And when she had put some distance between herself and the astonished group, these observed yet another figure who joined her and watched the two individuals lose themselves in the night.

According to their later calculations given the apparent size of the figure from their position, the strange female had managed to traverse a distance of 4 kilometers in around 45 seconds; something impossible to achieve even with a land vehicle. Not to mention the woman didn’t raise a tremendous wake of sand while racing through the beach, nor even make any discernible noise.

Had that been the same man and woman Borrego López and Pedro had tried to pursue? Or were they an additional element to this absurd stage play, intended to distract the witnesses the same way the ten-foot-tall giant had done on the night of September 29th, when it showed itself floating inches above the ground while the couple of changelings were making their move toward the anonymity of the Conil streets?

Whatever the case, the only thing Borrego López could do was analyze the footprints left by the (original) couple before they vanished. While the tracks made by the woman were very light and faintly discernible, the man’s were very profound; so much so that Borrego López estimated the individual had to weigh more than 100 kilograms. The size and shape were consistent with the ones found by the youngsters on the night of the 29th, not only in their unusual shape and monstrous size, but also due to the fact the researcher found tracks hinting how whomever made them, had been apparently making strange swirls as if going in circles –movements unobserved by neither Borrego López nor Pedro, the same way the original witnesses had watched the couple walk straight toward the town, yet they later found a great number of large footprints going in different directions.

After the ‘circles´, only one set of footprints was detectable… and it went straight into the water.

It was close to midnight when Borrego López confirmed there were no more tracks to be found in a 100-meter radius, and with that he was ready to call it a night. While he was advising his young acquaintances not to reveal to anyone what had transpired that night, Pedro suddenly yelled “here they come!”. Sure enough, the enigmatic couple was making yet another uncalled-for appearance right in front of the witnesses. One of the boys was (finally!) carrying a super-8 film camera and began recording the seemingly hurried movements of the couple as they passed by.

The man looked straight into Borrego López’s with cold, unfriendly eyes. His face was very pale. The woman on the other hand was stunningly beautiful, and she seemed to have somewhat oriental features, with her eyes slanted slightly at the edges and glimpsing at the gathering of witnesses with an expression of animosity or nervousness. The seasoned UFO hunter noticed both their clothes were completely dry, which ran counter to the evidence of the tracks heading into the sea.

The witnesses never dared to address the couple. They just kept staring at them until, for the second time, they reached the streets of Conil and were lost out of sight. They didn’t return that night, nor any other subsequent night.

When they revealed the Super-8 film, nothing appeared on screen. ‘Convenient’ would say the hardcore skeptic; ‘customary’ would reply the experienced Fortean, who knows fully well these sort of things happen all the time.

The Epilogue

Our tale has basically come to an end, which doesn’t mean the UFO activity in the area fully ceased; Benítez reveals other interesting incidents near Conil during that time of 1989 in his book La Quinta Columna –including the observation of another giant being by a local artisan on the morning on September 22nd. Further confirming the supposition made by few people in the UFO field –including yours truly– that high strangeness events almost never happen in isolation; rather, it seems the ‘energy’ conducing to these  manifestations slowly increases, until a final dramatic ‘crisis’ unfolds.

And if someone needs further confirmation that the year 1989 was exceptionally ‘charged’ with high strangeness, we but need to remind our dear Coppertops of another remarkable close encounter report, which happened just two days before the Conil case: I’m talking of course about the landing in the Russian city of Voronezh, where children and other witnesses interacted with giant humanoids and robotic entities.

Which begs the question: Why does the phenomenon chooses to manifest so prominently in places like Voronezh, or in Conil de la Frontera?

The Conclusion

In the comic book world, the Marvels mini-series created by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross holds a prominent place because it managed to show all the familiar stories of the Marvel super-heroes from a fresh new perspective: That of the human bystanders, who are forced to observe their actions and epic battles of these god-like beings from a safe distance, not fully understanding their motives or even what’s really going on.

When I think of the Conil case, I feel it is a similar situation. Because this amazing story is far more suggestive by what it doesn’t reveal, than by what it actually does. The testimony of the main witnesses feels like broken pieces of a larger puzzle, hinting to a bigger tapestry of events that took place covertly in that placid beach town of Cádiz, which we will probably never fully understand.

Comparing Conil with a comic book story may look like a cheap literary trick on my behalf, yet it you think about it there are MANY aspects of this close encounter that seem almost plucked out of a pulp novel or a Sci-Fi B-movie. Forget about the grotesque appearance of the male ‘changeling’, which we already equated to that of the extraterrestrial invaders in This Island Earth (1955) or how the ten-foot-tall giant is slightly reminiscent of Gort in the classic The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) –at least in the sense of how it seems to serve as a ‘protector’ of the couple, by distracting the attention of the witnesses away from them. Consider also how there’s this strong link between the humanoids’ ability to transform themselves into a human form, and the ability of the extraterrestrial visitor portrayed by Jeff Bridges in the 1984 movie Starman to do the same thing –and do you remember the main form of ‘technology’ shown by this alien? That’s right: small metallic spheres which glowed with a blue light. Sound familiar?

Make no mistake, my dear Coppertops: Those who read the previous paragraph as an attempt to shoot down the case on my part, should do well to grab a copy of Jeffrey Kripal’s book Mutants & Mystics. Kripal is a scholar of comparative religious studies at Rice University, and rather than being skeptic on the subject of UFOs and paranormal phenomena –his last book was co-authored with Whitley Strieber– he points out there’s an undeniable ‘cross-pollination’ between these type of events and the pop culture we consume in our literature, television and films; to the point that trying to play ‘chicken-and-the-egg’ between fantasy tales and paranormal cases becomes a rather tricky proposition…

Because the truth of the matter is that stories of paranormal agencies infiltrating our world in human guise have existed way before the existence of Sci-Fi movies, or even cinematography. In fact, such folklore goes back centuries –if not millennia– into the dawn of Time. Oxford scholar W.Y. Evans-Wentz managed to gather the remnants of the belief in the Fey folk in his seminal book The Fairy Faith in Celtic Countries (1911), and talked to a lot of honest, hard-working country folk who still believed –or had actually interacted– with these elusive beings who from time to time chose to meddle in the affairs of men:

“They are able to appear in different forms. One once appeared to me, and seemed only four feet high, and stoutly built. He said “I am bigger than I appear to you know. We can make the old young, the big small, the small big.”

The Celtic peasants also believed lakes and bodies of water acted as ‘bridges’ or conduits in which the transmutation from the human to the fairy state took place. But if that is the case… couldn’t the OPPOSITE be also possible? Could water be a medium by which liminal beings could get entrance into our world? Both Evans-Wentz and Guillermo Del Toro would probably concur…

When you boil them down to their bare essence, and you stop the bickering caused by either trying to validate or debunk a given case, the true main difference between fictional stories and factual close encounters is that Fiction HAS TO MAKE SENSE. A novel or movie plot needs to have a core of consistency in order to make all the elements fall into place.

Finding sense in the events that took place in Conil on the night of September 29th is practically impossible: If what Juan José Benítez reveals in La Quinta Columna concerning the military radar station which remained inoperable during those days is true, then it would hint the beings making their appearance at the Bateles Beach wanted to perform their infiltration activities covertly, away from the eyes of the Spanish government; yet if that is the case, then WHY choose a tourist town, instead of a more remote location? WHY suffer the presence of pesky human interlopers near them? WHY was Pedro González the only one in the group who could see the giant at first? WHY perform their shape-shifting spectacle lying down on a beach, instead of the safety of their own ‘craft’ (if that is what the ‘red moon’ observed by the witnesses was)? WHY the imperfect transformation, which still rendered the male with such abnormal-looking facial features? WHY the incapacity to cover the unusual shape and size of their tracks?

…And WHY O WHY the need to reappear in front of the witnesses not once, but twice??

These are just a few of the open questions left by the Conil case. How one chooses to approach them tells more about one’s personal opinion about the UFO phenomenon, than about what really happened on that fateful night. In a polarizing world demanding to view things as either ‘black’ or ‘white’, I personally feel this case was always meant to remain ‘gray’. I consider the actions allegedly performed by the entities manifesting at Conil de la Frontera as *deliberately* absurd; like a well-crafted act enacted for the benefit of the young witnesses, who also had a part to perform in this play, even if they didn’t know it or were capable or comprehend it. The high strangeness of this encounter is both equally suggestive of non-human intervention, while at the same time being sufficiently devoid of enough concrete evidence so that almost 30 years after the story broke, it sadly remains scarcely known outside the Spanish-speaking UFO community.

“We want you to believe in us,” said one of the UFOnauts who abducted patrolman Herbert Schirmer in 1967, “… but not too much.” If the tall blond who left those inhuman footprints on the Bateles beach had ever opened his mouth and talked to the witnesses, he might have said similar words. Just as it was in 1989, his cold eyes remain an open question hinting at answers that could be not just incomprehensible… but also deeply unsettling.

Space Travel Will Morph the Shape of Your Brain

Space Travel Will Morph the Shape of Your Brain

When traveling into space, your brain will literally change shape. In a recent study published in Nature Microgravity, researchers found that astronauts brains change shape in outer space to adapt to microgravity. Using MRI scans from before and after spaceflights, researchers found that gray matter — the darker tissue that processes information in your brain — decreases in some areas and increases in others.

During spaceflight, the brain compresses and expands, and the extent of these changes depend on how long astronauts are in space. This is because changes in gravity affect the cerebrospinal fluid in the brain, says principal investigator Rachael Seidler, professor of kinesiology and psychology at the University of Michigan.

“When you’re on earth, you can imagine that gravity is pulling fluid down in your body, but in space you don’t have gravity to do that, so the fluid is shifted up towards the head,” Seidler tells Inverse.

“I don’t want to give people the impressions is that you’re losing brain cells,” Seidler continues, “but it could potentially be shifting the location of the brain in the skull or compressing it.”

Astronauts who spent a longer time in space experienced more changes in the brain. Seidler believes gray matter increases in the parts of the brain that control leg movement possibly because the brain adapts to moving the body in microgravity.

This effect, or the ability of the brain to reorganize itself to form new neural connections and adapt, is called the neuroplasticity effect. That way, astronauts learn new motor skills and get better at moving through space.

“You’re floating and in a sense it’s like swimming,” Seidler says. “You’re using your brain differently. Your muscles are contracting differently. We see that the regions increasing are the brain learning how to move the body in space. The more you learn, the better you learn with adapting to the microgravity environment.”

Previously, Seidler found that extended space missions affect astronauts’ inner ear, which decreases their balance abilities. And since the brain has changed and adapted to space, astronauts may initially have a difficult time walking and standing up straight when they return to Earth. But even as the brain learns to adapt to Earth’s gravity again, it may take a different pathway to make up for structural brain changes from spaceflight.

Seidler plans to continue studying how shape changes in the brain affect behavior and thought. Right now, she’s in the middle of a study testing balance, motor function, short-term memory, mental rotations, and other brain abilities of astronauts up to six months after spaceflight. This will help her team better understand if these brain changes reflect brain plasticity.

These findings might help researchers develop better treatments of other health conditions that affect brain function, such as normal pressure hydrocephalus, a condition where cerebrospinal fluid causes pressure in the brain and can affect leg movement, the bladder, and mental processes.

More likely, in the future when humans embark on longer flights, potentially to Mars, this research can help scientists better understand how people’s brain functions will adapt in space.

“I think it will be important to understand, if people are in space longer, what it might that mean for brain function when people get to Mars, or what that might mean for recovery functions when they get back,” Seidler says.

A Stunning New Crop Circle Has Shown Up & It’s Very Mysterious

A Stunning New Crop Circle Has Shown Up & It’s Very Mysterious

3-759x496.jpg?fit=758%2C495

A new crop circle has appeared in Reigate Hill, Surrey according to a recent report. While the reports are still recent and not much is known about the circle, including specific details about the formation that could tell us more about how it got there, this one is quite fascinating in design.

Why talk about crop circles? As we will discuss below, they are a phenomenon that simply can’t be ignored. Formations show up every single year and come with great mystery, even in the scientific realm. Many do not realize some of the amazing things that are happening inside crop circles that blow the board and rope theory out the window.

“Some of these formations are so immense and complex as to defy reason. And after all these decades, none of the perpetrators have been caught in the act of making any of the truly extraordinary formations.” – Richard Dolan, historian, academic, author, and one of the world’s leading UFO researchers (Source)

Richard’s thoughts there are quite telling of this reality, and even scientific minds are at a loss for words as although they believe the circles are done by humans, they are calling it the most science oriented art movement ever.

For example, Richard Taylor, a University of Oregon physicist, published a paper on them in the 2011 issue of Physics World, stating:

“Crop circle arts are not going to give up their secrets easily. This summer, unknown artists will venture into the countryside close to your homes and carry out their craft, safe in the knowledge that they are continuing the legacy of the most science-oriented art movement in history.”

But what would cause a physicist to conclude that these works do not have an extraterrestrial explanation? Or even consider the issue seriously?

Amazing Facts About Crop Circles

When you begin to explore the reality of crop circles you start to realize how one cannot simply pass the phenomenon off as people walking out into a field with some ropes and boards and making a design. It would be naive to make such a claim.

miklk.jpg?resize=710%2C494

Above is a picture of an 800 foot crop circle that appeared in Wiltshire, England back in 2001. It caused a lot of commotion, and as you can see, it was very beautiful and extremely complex. The design consisted of 409 circles that form what’s known as atriskelion, a symbol that dates back thousands of years. There is some great footage of it in the documentary Crop Cricles: Quest for Truth by Academy Award-winning director William Gazecki. You can view that here.

“It was so large that it took us half an hour to find the centre.”

There are some more great images of it in this YouTube video. You can also see footage of it taken by a helicopter flying above from the documentary Thrive in this video (at the 26.16 minute mark). This circle marks just one of thousands of verified formations that continue to baffle scientists, researchers, and onlookers alike.

Richard Taylor, the aforementioned scientist who studied these circles, again expressed his belief that this was one of the greatest art revolutions in history when he published his scientific analysis of crop circles in the journal Nature in 2010.

After studying the affected grass in the lab, he concluded that the circle makers must be using GPS devices, lasers, and microwaves to create these designs because the nodes of some of the stalks had been blasted out on one side. This same effect has been replicated by highly localized microwave heating, which is what causes the stocks to flop over to one side.

While he was able to come up with a scientifically feasible explanation for this phenomenon, he fails to address how hoaxers could come into possession of such advanced technology. It’s clear that there would be no other way to make some of these circles, so what is really going on here?

“If something like this caused the formations, then we are clearly talking about a highly sophisticated agency behind the phenomenon.” – Richard Dolan

Did you know that the electromagnetic field over the area where a circle appears is usually electrostatically charged? Or that there is a rare form of electromagnetic energy called an “ionized plasma vortex,” also known as ball lighting, involved with these formations?

The helicopters you see in the video are military helicopters. Military involvement with UFOs is well documented, and this should be no surprise.

These are verified facts, which is why studies published in scientific journals have tried to come up with explanations that differ from unknown or extraterrestrial. For example, Dr. Terence Meadon, a professional physicist, meteorologist, and archaeologist at the University of Oxford, said that these balls of light are a result of wind currents and ionized plasmas. Whatever the case may be, the fact that scientists are taking note should signal that this phenomenon is worth our attention.

What Archaeologists Really Think About Ancient Aliens, Lost Colonies, And Fingerprints Of The Gods

What Archaeologists Really Think About Ancient Aliens, Lost Colonies, And Fingerprints Of The Gods

klaus-wittmann-alienpack-Small.jpg?fit=531%2C480

It’s no secret that far more people watch TV shows like the History Channel’s ‘Ancient Aliens’ than attend lectures by professional archaeologists and historians.  Millions of people tune in to watch TV series and docu-dramas with a questionable grip on facts about the past.  The stories spun by producers and writers may have some basis in truth, but they’re largely stories — they’re compelling stories, though, and they’re aimed at a general audience the way that most academic output isn’t.

People are also reading books about ancient aliens and other forms of pseudoarchaeology, according to archaeologist Donald Holly. He starts a recent open-access book review section in the journal American Antiquity by asking archaeologists to entertain the idea of pseudoarchaeology — just for a little bit — so that we can create better teachable moments, whether we’re talking to students or to anyone interested in our jobs.

People who read these books are not ignorant or obstinate, he points out, but rather undecided about alternative archaeological explanations and clearly interested in understanding the past.  ”It’s time we talk to the guy sitting next to us on the airplane,” Holly asserts.  In collecting nine reviews of popular-on-Amazon pseudo-archaeology books by professional archaeologists, Holly hopes that this will both “offer the silent and curious majority that is interested in these works a professional perspective on them” and give archaeologists unfamiliar with the books a pseudoarchaeology primer.

klaus-wittmann-ancient-aliens1-Small.jpg?resize=710%2C277

The article starts out with two reviews of books whose main premise is that we need advanced humans — or nonhumans — to make sense of past developments. First up, Graham Hancock’s Fingerprints of the Gods: The Evidence of Earth’s Lost Civilization, reviewed by Ken Feder, an archaeologist famous for his anti-pseudoarchaeology book Frauds, Myths, and Mysteries: Science and Pseudoscience in Archaeology. The gist of Fingerprints is that an extraordinarily advanced civilization roamed the seas thousands of years ago, giving advice to the people they found in places like Egypt and Peru and helping them establish their own civilizations. In return, these advanced peoples were treated as gods, particularly after some cataclysmic event wiped them out. Feder’s main problems with Hancock’s book include the fact that he cherry-picked his data, not bothering to address all the evidence; that he relies on very old and discredited fringe thinkers; and that he can’t conceive of cultural evolution.

In the second review, The Ancient Alien Question, archaeologist Jeb Card points out, as does Feder, that the origins of this idea lay in Victorian mysticism and Theosophy, a movement that “blended hermetic magic, spiritualism, Western curiosity about Eastern religion, colonial racism, and misconceptions of evolution into a worldview of root races, lost continents, and ascended masters who originated on Venus or other worlds.” The author of The Ancient Alien Question, Philip Coppens, was a regular on the Ancient Aliens TV series and presents academic research as if science itself is mysterious. Most problematic, Card finds, is Coppens’ invocation of “the destruction of the Library of Alexandria and other book burnings as suppression of ancient truth without recognizing his own call for the destruction of the scientific order, replacing scientific investigation with a new history of mysticism and myth.”

Other books in the review section focus on specific sites or cultures and illustrate that the popular author has artificially selected which information to present.  Andrew Collins’ bookGöbekli Tepe: Genesis of the Gods, reviewed by archaeologist Eric Cline, deals with the Neolithic site in Turkey that Collins tries to connect to the biblical Garden of Eden by treating the Bible as incontrovertible fact. Black Genesis: The Prehistoric Origins of Ancient Egypt by Robert Bauval and Thomas Brophy, reviewed by archaeologist Ethan Watrall, misunderstands both astronomy and the Bible to show that the Egyptian state was “black African” yet also manages to accurately point out that academic archaeology has for a long time ignored sub-Saharan Africa.

The southwestern U.S. is covered by Gary David’s Star Shrines and Earthworks of the Desert Southwest, reviewed by archaeologist Stephen Lekson. While Lekson admits that David is onto something with his “loose, journalistic style,” the “content [of the book] is fantastic, it is phenomenal, it is flabbergasting, it is… a mish-mash.” Archaeologist Kory Cooper tackles Iron Age America Before Columbus by William Conner, which suggests that there is evidence of iron smelting sites in prehistoric North America.

Cooper’s highest praise is that it “would make a useful reference for an Introduction to Logic course because the book is a veritable catalogue of logical fallacies.” And archaeologist Benjamin Auerbach reviews The Ancient Giants Who Ruled America: The Missing Skeletons and the Great Smithsonian Cover-Up by Richard Dewhurst, who uses old newspaper articles to claim that not only were the skeletons of giants found in the U.S., but that the most well-known science museum in the country tried to hide the evidence. Auerbach points out that he personally has studied many of the skeletons Dewhurst mentions and “none had statures over six feet.” The selective evidence in these books is clearly problematic, but not as problematic as the motif underlying many pseudoarchaeology books.

klaus-wittmann-ancient-aliens22-Small.jpg?resize=710%2C277

The primary theme among these popular pseudoarchaeology books that professionals have a major problem with is ethnocentrism, or the idea that we can judge other cultures based on the yardstick of our own. But racism figures in here too.  Archaeologist Larry Zimmerman reviews The Lost Colonies of Ancient America by Frank Joseph, who insists that mainstream archaeologists are the ones ignoring information on transoceanic voyages and that any number of past civilizations may have colonized the New World first.

Zimmerman, though, notes that “Joseph echoes half a millennium of speculation geared toward inventing a deep Old World history in the Americas, thereby challenging the primacy of American Indians in the hemisphere, or at least implying their inferiority, their poor stewardship of the land, and the need to civilize them, all in the service of Manifest Destiny and justification for taking their land.”

Similarly, John Ruskamp’s Asiatic Echoes: The Identification of Chinese Pictograms in Pre-Columbian North American Rock Writing, reviewed by archaeologist Angus Quinlan, puts forth the idea that pictograms found in North American rock art are Chinese script characters left by an otherwise archaeologically invisible trip across the Pacific. The similarity is substantial, Ruskamp insists, but Quinlan calls it “another illustration of deductive thinking at its worst.” Further, Quinlan points out that these sorts of interpretations that try to shoehorn in foreign visitors to explain New World culture are “disrespectful of the Native American cultures that used rock art in their sociocultural routines.”

This portion of the Great Gallery, found in Horseshoe Canyon, is an example of a Barrier Canyon Style pictograph (painted rock art). The full panel is 200 feet long, 15 feet high and the paintings are life-sized human figures. The largest figure pictured is about 7 feet tall. Archaeologists are trained as anthropologists to recognize and celebrate the diversity of humanity, both today and in the past.  Eric Cline succinctly explains this in his review, noting “pseudo archaeologists cannot accept the fact that the mere humans might have come up with great innovations such as the domestication of plants and animals or built great architectural masterpieces such as the Sphinx all on their own; rather, they frequently seek or invoke divine, or even alien, assistance to explain how these came to be.”

Pseudoarchaeology books are problematic for archaeologists for a number of reasons.  First, of course, they tend to present misinformation, cherry-picked from legitimate (and not-so-legitimate) sources that is often taken as fact because it’s presented as fact. Archaeologists, as scientists, can no more select what data to consider than a chemist can select which laws of chemistry to follow. Second, pseudoarchaeology seems like a legitimate body of scholarship because authors tend to cite one another, creating a body of information that, however outlandish it sounds, fits together. Archaeology also does this, but as scientists, we are invested in improving our understanding of the past rather than in protecting our own theories the way pseudo archaeologists do.

But these books are perhaps most problematic for archaeologists because, as Lekson notes, “alternative archaeology is more interesting than the stuff we write… more interesting to more people, that is.”  Academic archaeologists are not trained to write readably, which means there is a large opening for authors to connect with the “guy on the airplane.” Archaeologists like Brian Fagan who do write more approachable books have to walk a fine line between making data interesting and not making extraordinary claims.

Unfortunately, tales of ancient aliens and extraordinary humans creating the Pyramids as a communication device are often more fascinating than slow cultural change.  We as archaeologists need to find a way to showcase the humanity of the past and get across the idea that ancient humans were intelligent, capable, and innovative — that those of us alive today are the product of that long history of innovation, and that we are continuing the tradition of our early ancestors by inventing cars, computers, and, yes, even pseudoarchaeology.

For more on pseudoarchaeology books, you can read theAmerican Antiquity book reviews here, or check out the fantastic blog by Jason Colavito, the “skeptical xenoarchaeologist,” who critiqued Hancock’s recent appearance on the Joe Rogan podcast. And if you want to take a class in pseudoarchaeology, Ethan Watrall has put his fall 2015 Michigan State University course online, with all course material freely available to anyone who’s interested.

Scientists look to flying animals — birds, bats and insects — for inspiration when they design airborne drones. But researchers are also investigating how to use technology to interact with, and even guide, animals as they fly, enhancing the unique adaptations that allow them to take to the air.

To that end, engineers have fitted dragonflies with tiny, backpack-mounted controllers that issue commands directly to the neurons controlling the insects' flight.

This project, known as DragonflEye, uses optogenetics, a technique that employs light to transmit signals to neurons. And researchers have genetically modified dragonfly neurons to make them more light-sensitive, and thereby easier to control through measured light pulses. [7 Animals That Wore Backpacks for Science.

Dragonflies have large heads, long bodies and two pairs of wings that don't always flap in sync, according to a 2007 study published in the journal Physical Review Letters. The study authors found that dragonflies maximize their lift when they flap both sets of wings together, and they hover by flapping their wing pairs out of synch, though at the same rate.

Meanwhile, separate muscles controlling each of their four wings allow dragonflies to dart, hover and turn on a dime with exceptional precision, scientists found in 2014. Researchers used high-speed video footage to track dragonfly flight and build computer models to better understand the insects' complex maneuvers, presenting their findings at the 67th Annual Division of Fluid Dynamics meeting, according to a statement released by the American Physical Society in November 2014.

DragonflEye sees these tiny flight masters as potentially controllable flyers that would be "smaller, lighter and stealthier than anything else that's manmade," Jesse Wheeler, a biomedical engineer at the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory (CSDL) in Massachusetts and principal investigator on the DragonflEye program, said in a statement.

The project is a collaboration between the CSDL, which has been developing the backpack that controls the dragonfly, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), where experts are identifying and enhancing "steering" neurons located in the dragonfly's nerve cord, inserting genes that make it more responsive to light.

"This system pushes the boundaries of energy harvesting, motion sensing, algorithms, miniaturization and optogenetics, all in a system small enough for an insect to wear," Wheeler said.

Even smaller than the dragonfly backpack are components created by CSDL called optrodes — optical fibers supple enough to wrap around the dragonfly's nerve cord, so that engineers can target only the neurons related to flight, CSDL representatives explained in a statement.

And in addition to controlling insect flight, the tiny, flexible optrodes could have applications in human medicine, Wheeler added.

"Someday these same tools could advance medical treatments in humans, resulting in more effective therapies with fewer side effects," Wheeler said. "Our flexible optrode technology provides a new solution to enable miniaturized diagnostics, safely access smaller neural targets and deliver higher precision therapies."

Could Wormholes Really Work? Probably Not

Could Wormholes Really Work? Probably Not

Could Wormholes Really Work? Probably Not
A model of 'folded' space-time illustrates how a wormhole bridge might form with at least two mouths that are connected to a single throat or tube.

Paul Sutter is an astrophysicist at The Ohio State University and the chief scientist at COSI Science Center. Sutter is also host of Ask a Spaceman, RealSpace and COSI Science Now.

Ah, wormholes. The intergalactic shortcut. A tunnel through space-time that allows intrepid travelers to hop from star system to star system without ever coming close to the speed of light.

Wormholes are a workhorse of sci-fi interstellar civilizations in books and on the screen because they solve the annoying problem of "Well, if we stuck to known physics, 99.99999 percent of the story would be as fascinating as watching people sleep."

But could we do it? Could we actually warp and bend space-time to make a convenient tunnel, making all of our galactic dreams come true? [Weird Science: Wormholes Make the Best Time Machines]

Short answer: not likely.

Long answer: Well, keep reading.

The concept of wormholes got its start when physicist Ludwig Flamm, and later Albert Einstein and Nathan Rosen, realized that black holes can be "extended." When one goes about solving the fantastically complicated equations of general relativity, the machinery that predicts a black hole also predicts a phenomenon called a white hole. A white hole is pretty much what you think: Whereas a black hole's event horizon marks a region of space that once you enter you can't leave, it's impossible to enter a white hole's horizon, although anything already in there can escape.

That same mathematical machinery delivers a bonus, too: All black holes would be naturally "connected" to white holes via their singularities, making a tunnel through space. Woohoo, wormholes here we go!

Or not. While we have gobs of evidence for the existence of black holes, white holes appear to be mathematical fiction. There's no known process in our universe that would actually form them, and even if they did pop into existence, their natural extreme instability would snuff them right out again. [Watch: Wormhole instabilities.]

Oh, yeah, and the mechanism for making black holes — the collapse of massive stars — also automatically prevents the formation of a symbiotic white hole.

And even if they did form (and they don't), the extreme gravity of the mutual singularities would cause the wormhole tunnel to immediately stretch and snap much more quickly than anything could cross it.

But that doesn't stop anybody from playing a fun game of "what if." What if white holes could naturally form, or be constructed? What if we could stabilize them? What if we could attach a white hole's singularity to a black hole and make a wormhole? What if? What if? What if?

Well, for one thing, traveling down such a wormhole would really, really suck. Literally. The entrance to the wormhole — the "throat" — sits inside the event horizon of the black hole.

That's a problem.

The very definition of an event horizon — their very cosmique raison d'etre — is that once you enter them, you don't get to come out. No way, no how. It doesn't matter if there's a wormhole tunnel inside it — you don't get to leave.

Inside a black hole event horizon, you have only one destination: singularity town, the place of infinite density and soul-crushing gravitational forces.

So let's say you enter a wormhole. You can watch light from another patch of the universe filter in from the opposite side. If someone else jumps in, you can meet them and have some tea together. And you can die — miserably — as you careen into the singularity. [Chasing Wormholes: The Hunt for Tunnels in Space-Time]

Is there any way to make a working, even fun, wormhole, instead of a terrifying portal to inevitable destruction?

Surprisingly, yes. Well, not quite 100 percent absolutely "this is a normal part of our universe" yes. More like "if we play pretend" yes.

To construct a traversable wormhole, you need to overcome two important obstacles. First, the entrance to the wormhole has to actually sit outside the event horizon. That would allow you to enter the wormhole and blast through it to your faraway destination without fearing a "singular" encounter.

Second, the tunnel itself has to be stable and strong. It has to withstand the extreme gravity of the singularities and resist tearing apart when something flies down its length.

There is indeed a material that solves both problems. But that material has a problem all its own: It has negative mass.

That's right: mass, but negative. A ring of negative-mass material could be used to construct a fully functional and useful wormhole. Since the exotic nature of negative mass warps spacetime in a unique way, it "inflates" the entrance to the wormhole outside the boundary of the event horizon, and stabilizes the throat of the wormhole against instabilities. It’s not an intuitive result but the math checks out.

But could such a substance exist? We've mapped out a good chunk of the universe, and we've never seen negative mass. If it did exist, it would have some pretty weird properties. For example, following the math of Newton’s Laws with some minus signs tossed in, we find that a negative-mass particle would push on a positive-mass particle, while the positive-mass particle would pull on the negative-mass one. Set two opposite-mass particles next to each other, perfectly still, and the pair would start accelerating, zooming off without any input of force.

That seems like that might violate some sort of rule. [Watch: The problem of negative mass.]

What about the Casimir effect, the odd and fascinating attraction of two metal plates due to vacuum energy? That’s often trotted out as an example of the universe behaving badly, and a possible route to negative mass. But the Casimir force is characterized by local negative pressure (it pulls rather than pushes), not negative mass.Sure, we don't know everything there is to know about quantum gravity and the nature of space-time at super-duper-teensy scales. Could an advanced civilization discover the path to negative mass and manipulate gravity in just the right way? Would a breakthrough in physics point a way to fashioning wormholes?

Honestly, probably not. There are just too many things working against them. Working wormholes would violate so many aspects about known (and extremely well tested) physics that I think it's better to just work on other problems.

I know some people might accuse me of not being creative enough, but the universe doesn't care about our creativity. The tools of science are harsh but fair judges; if an idea doesn't work, it simply doesn't work. There are many varied and beautiful mysteries in our universe, and we certainly haven't unlocked all of the inner workings of the cosmos. But wormholes probably aren't one of them.

Alien abductee explains what actually happens during ‘missing time’

Alien abductee explains what actually happens during ‘missing time’

A man who claims he was abducted by aliens – and has a metal implant in his leg – has explained what actually happens when people wake up with unexplained ‘gaps’ in time.

Chris Augustin claims that he knows that time had passed in an instant – because he suddenly ‘came to’ behind the wheel of his car.

Chris Augustin, ‘Three minutes and 40 seconds took place inside my car. I felt like I’d come aware from something – like a daze.’

‘My hands are on the wheel, executing a turn – and then three-and-a-half minutes are gone. I was afraid, afraid of what I didn’t understand.

In a wide-ranging speech at a UFO conference in late January, Augustin claims that years later, he started to wake up with blood on his sheets – and that aliens implanted a metal object in his leg.

Nigel Watson, author of the UFO Investigations Manual said, ‘‘American ufologist and artist Budd Hopkins categorised many of the prime elements of the abduction experience. He discovered that UFO witnesses, with no inclination of an abduction experience, often cannot account for a missing period, ranging from minutes to hours.

‘Abductions often start in childhood, continue throughout a person’s life, and are not just isolated incidents. Abductees regularly find mysterious scars on their body; they are often confused and worried by dreams or nightmares that they have had since childhood. Under hypnosis they remember being inside a flying saucer.

‘Typical memories recall medical procedures that include the taking of sperm or ova. At times, the experience amounts to a form of ritualized rape. From his study of hundreds of reports, Hopkins believes that aliens are abducting people to create human/alien hybrids.

‘As might be expected, such ideas have attracted the attention of both sceptics and believers. Sceptics regard the abduction researchers and abductees as gullible fools who do not know the difference between fact and fantasy. The believers regard the abductees as tortured victims who need understanding and help after the trauma of alien encounters.’

The Most Amazing Space Stories This Week!

The Most Amazing Space Stories This Week!

The Most Amazing Space Stories This Week!
Blazars form extremely active cores of some galaxies. They consist of a supermassive black hole with a dense, whirling disk of material around it, which generates the energy for near-lightspeed jets of material aimed perpendicular to the disk. If one of those jets is aimed toward Earth, it appears particularly bright and the core is classified as a blazar.

Ban reactions

The American Astronomical Society, American Geophysical Union and American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics signed a letter protesting last week's White House executive order restricting immigration to the United States from seven Muslim-majority nations, and the International Astronomical Union also spoke out with their concerns. Many space industry organizations, on the other hand, have described a "wait-and-see" approach. [Full Story: Mixed Reactions in Space Community to Immigration Executive Order]

Blazing bright

Five gamma-ray blazars, shooting intense radiation from enormous supermassive black holes at the centers of distant galaxies, have been spotted further away than ever before, dating back to when the universe was nearly one-tenth its current age. [Full Story: These Powerful Blazars Are the Most Distant Ever Seen]

Moon air time

A new study has discovered a type of oxygen common in Earth's atmosphere embedded in the lunar soil, suggesting that that the moon has been picking up the charged substance during a specific part of its orbit — ever since plants on Earth began generating it. [Full Story: Moon's Been Getting Oxygen from Earth's Plants for Billions of Years]

ET chemistry test

A new chemical analysis could detect specific amino acid types on the surface of an alien world, letting robotic missions autonomously sniff out evidence of life. The analysis can distinguish between "left-handed" and "right-handed" amino acids with extreme sensitivity — while natural amino acids form in both varieties equally, life generates just one. [Full Story: Finding Alien Life Could Be a Simple Chemistry Test Away]

An icy mystery

New results from the IceCube neutrino detector experiment, buried under the Antarctic ice, have revealed a strange symmetry in measurements of the neutrinos' masses, suggesting there's an underlying physics scientists don't understand behind the ghostly particles. [Full Story: Cosmic Neutrino Detector Reveals Clues About Ghostly Particle Masses]

Space plants

A satellite scheduled to launch later this year will grow tomatoes experimentally at moon and Mars gravity by rotating on its axis at different speeds. The German Aerospace Center project will help researchers understand how to best grow plants for future settlements on those worlds. Junk collector fail

A space junk "collector" attached to a Japanese space station resupply vehicle ran into a glitch, failing to propel a long tether into space. The system would ultimately use such a tether to reach large pieces of dangerous debris and pull them down to be incinerated in Earth's atmosphere. [Full Story: A Japanese Space Junk Removal Experiment Has Failed in Orbit]

Hey neighbor

Breakthrough Starshot, a project to send tiny probes to our neighboring star system, Alpha Centauri, initially described probes that would whiz by after a journey at 20 percent the speed of light. A new study explores how such a probe could slow down enough to get into orbit around Alpha Centauri or the associated star Proxima Centauri, giving it a chance to investigate the newly-discovered planet Proxima b (although the journey would take much longer).
