Experts Share Their Thoughts On UFO Sighting Reports in 2017

nevada-ufos

The year 2017 has been an exciting year in search of life beyond Earth. There have been objects appearing near the International Space Station, groundbreaking NASA discoveries, and unidentified flying objects stalking planes in Merseyside.

Many do believe that next year could be a breakthrough year. Former Ministry of Defence employee Nick Pope, who is known for his role of investigating UFO sightings for the British Government, revealed what he thought of a video that allegedly shows a UFO.

Observers think the footage shows an American spy plane encountering a flying object at around 130ft with 20 flashing lights near Cyprus. Nick believes it may be genuine, saying that it is a fascinating footage.

Nick adds that the case is from the MoD’s UFO files. He explains that he did not only work on these real-life X-files, but also the public face of a ten-year project to declassify most of the materials.
He stresses that he is aware of the case even though his predecessors investigated the incident. He believes that it was a genuine unknown.

He says that incidents like this one, where several military witnesses and highly classified investigations were involved, show that the mystery raises essential defence, national security, and air safety issues whatever the truth about UFOs. He further stresses that it is a perfect illustration of how the public and the media were misled.

There have been concerns among UFO community as to whether the National Aeronautics and Space Administration is hiding proof of space alien life from the public. Nick believes clips that are supposed to be the proof of attempted cover-ups have a lot of contributing factors as to whether they are UFOs, but also thinks the space administration has no reason to hide anything.

He says that it is complicated to know the size, distance, and speed of an object in space.

Nick believes UFO hunters misunderstand agencies such as ESA and NASA. He explains that these groups of people want to find aliens, not hide evidence of their existence.

Philip Mantle, who is an active British UFO researcher, partly agrees with Nick saying that people should be doing a better job at capturing UFOs with the technology available these days. Mantle says that out of UFO reports, only under 1% remain unidentified. He explains that the number just shows that genuine UFO sightings are scarce. Therefore the chances of capturing a real UFO is almost, but not quite, impossible.

FLEET OF UFO’S SEEN IN TELESCOPE HEADING FOR EARTH

FLEET OF UFO’S SEEN IN TELESCOPE HEADING FOR EARTH

A man who claims to have worked as a consultant for both NASA and the NSA gave a series of mind-blowing statements.

For the past 12 years, Dr. Eric Norton has been an outside consultant for NASA and the National Security Agency (NSA) and his job description included keeping an eye on celestial threats such as asteroids and comets. But in January 2012, Dr. Norton saw something much more menacing—a massive fleet of extraterrestrial craft heading straight for our home world.

On January 22, he was called to the MacDonald Observatory near Fort Davis, Texas. Using the facility’s wide range of instrumentation, Dr. Norton was able to detect a menacing-looking group of unidentified spacecraft.

“What I saw was an array of massive, three dimensional black structures in space, in a straight line formation, advancing in the direction of planet Earth.”

Over a three-month period, he monitored their advance. The fact that the objects “had moved millions upon millions of miles closer within just months” suggested a technological level far superior to that of our own spacecraft.

Spectroscopy data suggested that the unknown objects were built using materials several thousand times harder than anything ever developed on Earth. Naturally, this hypothesis caused great concern among Norton and his peers.

Moreover, infrared spectrum imagery showed that cosmic particles were deflected by what must have been an energy field not unlike the magnetic field that protects our Earth. As the fleet advanced through our Solar System, telescopes could distinguish their details far more accurately and it became obvious that they resembled three dimensional “L” shaped craft. Judging by the distance, these craft must have been enormous.

By January 2013, the objects had passed the orbit of Mars and seemed to be heading for us, when the objects simply vanished from view, leading Norton to believe some kind of cloaking device had been deployed, effectively erasing the ships from the visible spectrum.

During the past decade or so, advanced camouflage techniques have been making steady progress here on Earth and there are plenty more breakthroughs to be made. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that a decidedly advanced alien civilization would possess technology that could make them physically invisible.

The craft must have changed their course as well. By the time Norton and his team pointed the infrared telescope toward the last point in space where the fleet had been, there was no sign of them. As Leo Tolstoy once put it, “one must be cunning and wicked in this world.” If he lived today, he would have considered the cosmic scale as well.

Norton described the following months a tense period, when the only thing worse than not knowing the spacecrafts’ position was not knowing the exact intention of their occupants.

“I knew that the upper echelons of government were worried about these things because I was under a constant 24/7 guard by Secret Service agents. For nearly the entire year of 2013, we watched the skies in disbelief. We didn’t know what was going on or were these things were. According to my calculations, these things would have been so close to us by now that we would have no problem seeing them in the night sky had they stayed visible to us. We didn’t know if they were still coming or had left the solar system.”

Approximately one year later later, Norton was contacted by a former colleague who disclosed the fact that the fleet was once again visible and had positioned itself behind the moon. He also handed him an internal report that mentioned an enormous object being “visually verified as having landed on our moon.”

The same report communicated that the Department of Defense ordered the launch of three Terrier-Orion rockets from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. EST, on January 15, 2014. The launches had been performed with the utmost secrecy and their mission remains unknown to the general public.

Dr. Norton outlined the fact that his disclosure might prove dangerous. “I need to be careful as to what information I give out to the public so I can protect myself.” He also believes that the sensitive information he carries has the potential to deal a powerful blow to the public opinion regarding the UFO phenomenon.

This would be a concern if revealed to the public. It would not only change the game forever, and we’re not just talking about the breakdown of all religions and total over all of everything we have ever known about the universe and space but we are talking about the breakdown of society itself.

We are talking about a subject matter that even up until today carries with it a level of disbelief amongst the majority of the world wide community.”

While Norton’s statements are definitely shocking, he offers little proof to back them up. But he does make a point when he says that an extraterrestrial intervention of this magnitude would be the exact kind of thing the government would want to keep a tight lid on.

Guess we won’t know until they land.

LOOKING FOR SIGNS OF LIFE ON DISTANT PLANETS JUST GOT EASIER

LOOKING FOR SIGNS OF LIFE ON DISTANT PLANETS JUST GOT EASIER

When it comes to searching for worlds that could support extra-terrestrial life, scientists currently rely on the “low-hanging fruit” approach. Since we only know of one set of conditions under which life can thrive – i.e. what we have here on Earth – it makes sense to look for worlds that have these same conditions. These include being located within a star’s habitable zone, having a stable atmosphere, and being able to maintain liquid water on the surface.

Until now, scientists have relied on methods that make it very difficult to detect water vapor in the atmosphere’s of terrestrial planets. But thanks to a new study led by Yuka Fujii of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), that may be about to change. Using a new three-dimensional model that takes into account global circulation patterns, this study also indicates that habitable exoplanets may be more common than we thought.

The study, titled “NIR-driven Moist Upper Atmospheres of Synchronously Rotating Temperate Terrestrial Exoplanets“, recently appeared in The Astrophysical Journal. In addition to Dr. Fujii, who is also a member of the Earth-Life Science Institute at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, the research team included Anthony D. Del Genio (GISS) and David S. Amundsen (GISS and Columbia University).

To put it simply, liquid water is essential to life as we know it. If a planet does not have a warm enough atmosphere to maintain liquid water on its surface for a sufficient amount of time (on the order of billions of years), then it is unlikely that life will be able to emerge and evolve. If a planet is too distant from its star, its surface water will freeze; if it is too close, its surface water will evaporate and be lost to space.

While water has been detected in the atmospheres of exoplanets before, in all cases, the planets were massive gas giants that orbited very closely to their stars. (aka. “Hot Jupiters”). As Fujii and her colleagues state in their study:

“Although H2O signatures have been detected in the atmospheres of hot Jupiters, detecting molecular signatures, including H2O, on temperate terrestrial planets is exceedingly challenging, because of the small planetary radius and the small scale height (due to the lower temperature and presumably larger mean molecular weight).”

When it comes to terrestrial (i.e. rocky) exoplanets, previous studies were forced to rely on one-dimensional models to calculate the presence of water. This consisted of measuring hydrogen loss, where water vapor in the stratosphere is broken down into hydrogen and oxygen from exposure to ultraviolet radiation. By measuring the rate at which hydrogen is lost to space, scientists would estimate the amount of liquid water still present on the surface.

However, as Dr. Fujii and her colleagues explain, such models rely on several assumptions that cannot be addressed, which include the global transport of heat and water vapor vapor, as well as the effects of clouds. Basically, previous models predicted that for water vapor to reach the stratosphere, long-term surface temperatures on these exoplanets would have to be more than 66 °C (150 °F) higher than what we experience here on Earth.

These temperatures could create powerful convective storms on the surface. However, these storms could not be the reason water reaches the stratosphere when it comes to slowly rotating planets entering a moist greenhouse state – where water vapor intensifies heat. Planets that orbit closely to their parent stars are known to either have a slow rotation or to be tidally-locked with their planets, thus making convective storms unlikely.

This occurs quite often for terrestrial planets that are located around low-mass, ultra cool, M-type (red dwarf) stars. For these planets, their proximity to their host star means that it’s gravitational influence will be strong enough to slow down or completely arrest their rotation. When this occurs, thick clouds form on the dayside of the planet, protecting it from much of the star’s light.

The team found that, while this could keep the dayside cool and prevent water vapor from rising, the amount of near-Infrared radiation (NIR) could provide enough heat to cause a planet to enter a moist greenhouse state. This is especially true of M-type and other cool dwarf stars, which are known to produce more in the way of NIR. As this radiation warms the clouds, water vapor will rise into the stratosphere.

To address this, Fujii and her team relied on three-dimensional general circulation models (GCMs) which incorporate atmospheric circulation and climate heterogeneity. For the sake of their model, the team started with a planet that had an Earth-like atmosphere and was entirely covered by oceans. This allowed the team to clearly see how variations in distance from different types of stars would effect conditions on the planets surfaces.

These assumptions allowed the team to clearly see how changing the orbital distance and type of stellar radiation affected the amount of water vapor in the stratosphere. As Dr. Fujii explained in a NASA press release:

“Using a model that more realistically simulates atmospheric conditions, we discovered a new process that controls the habitability of exoplanets and will guide us in identifying candidates for further study… We found an important role for the type of radiation a star emits and the effect it has on the atmospheric circulation of an exoplanet in making the moist greenhouse state.”

In the end, the team’s new model demonstrated that since low-mass star emit the bulk of their light at NIR wavelengths, a moist greenhouse state will result for planets orbiting closely to them. This would result in conditions on their surfaces that comparable to what Earth experiences in the tropics, where conditions are hot and moist, instead of hot and dry.

What’s more, their model indicated that NIR-driven processes increased moisture in the stratosphere gradually, to the point that exoplanets orbiting closer to their stars could remain habitable. This new approach to assessing potential habitability will allow astronomers to simulate circulation of planetary atmospheres and the special features of that circulation, which is something one-dimensional models cannot do.

In the future, the team plans to assess how variations in planetary characteristics -such as gravity, size, atmospheric composition, and surface pressure – could affect water vapor circulation and habitability. This will, along with their 3-dimensional model that takes planetary circulation patterns into account, allow astronomers to determine the potential habitability of distant planets with greater accuracy. As Anthony Del Genio indicated:

“As long as we know the temperature of the star, we can estimate whether planets close to their stars have the potential to be in the moist greenhouse state. Current technology will be pushed to the limit to detect small amounts of water vapor in an exoplanet’s atmosphere. If there is enough water to be detected, it probably means that planet is in the moist greenhouse state.”

Beyond offering astronomers a more comprehensive method for determining exoplanet habitability, this study is also good news for exoplanet-hunters hoping to find habitable planets around M-type stars. Low-mass, ultra-cool, M-type stars are the most common star in the Universe, accounting for roughly 75% of all stars in the Milky Way. Knowing that they could support habitable exoplanets greatly increases the odds of find one.

In addition, this study is VERY good news given the recent spate of research that has cast serious doubt on the ability of M-type stars to host habitable planets. This research was conducted in response to the many terrestrial planets that have been discovered around nearby red dwarfs in recent years. What they revealed was that, in general, red dwarf stars experience too much flare and could strip their respective planets of their atmospheres.

These include the 7-planet TRAPPIST-1 system (three of which are located in the star’s habitable zone) and the closest exoplanet to the Solar System, Proxima b. The sheer number of Earth-like planets discovered around M-type stars, coupled with this class of star’s natural longevity, has led many in the astrophysical community to venture that red dwarf stars might be the most likely place to find habitable exoplanets.

With this latest study, which indicates that these planets could be habitable after all, it would seem that the ball is effectively back in their court!

ALIEN CONTACT ALIENS EXTERRESTRIAL THEORY EVIDENCE OF ALIENS? 5 RECENT SIGNS WE ARE NOT ALONE

EVIDENCE OF ALIENS? 5 RECENT SIGNS WE ARE NOT ALONE

The universe is not just vaster than we imagine, but vaster than we can imagine. Scientists estimate the cosmos contains hundreds of billions of galaxies. In all probability, somewhere deep in space there is a sun much like our own, which is shining on an alien civilization that is quite likely very different from ours.

Perhaps, this extraterrestrial society is far more advanced than we are. Maybe, they have mastered intergalactic space travel and have visited our planet. Most scientists believe we are not alone — that somewhere in the immense recesses of space there are other intelligent beings. Some contend that aliens have visited the earth and that our government is hiding evidence of their existence. Indeed, here are five recent signs that we will soon discover that extraterrestrial life is for real.

1. Government officials hint at classified info about aliens

According to polls, 80 million Americans — about one-third of the population — believe in the existence of aliens. Recently a flurry of former high-level government officials have come forward with tantalizing comments. They indicate that major governments know more about extraterrestrials than they are willing to acknowledge.

For example, recently John Podesta, former chief-of-staff for President Bill Clinton and an advisor to President Barack Obama, added his name to a list of A-level government figures who have made comments that have hinted that there is classified info about aliens being withheld from the public.

In an interview with CNN, for instance, Podesta indicated that the time had come for the government to “release any evidence it has about the existence of alien forms of life in outer space.” Podesta fell short of confirming that aliens exist — or that the U.S. government has evidence it won’t reveal publicly — but his carefully-crafted comments seemed to suggest that he knew more than he was letting on. Asked point blank if he himself had seen proof that alien life existed, Podesta responded evasively by saying that is “for the public to judge once they’ve seen all the evidence that the U.S. government has.”

Sensing there was more, perhaps, the reporter then asked if Podesta believed in aliens. The former chief-of-staff responded wryly that, “There are a lot of planets out there.” He then added, “The American people can handle the truth.”

Podesta is hardly the only credible government figure to come forward. In 2005, Paul Hellyer, Canada’s former defense minister, became the first prominent ex-official to openly accuse the major world governments of deliberately withholding information that would confirm the existence of extraterrestrial life.

Recently, speaking at the University of Calgary, Hellyer insisted, “Aliens have been visiting our planet for thousands of years,” but he lamented that “much of the media won’t touch [the documents]” and that governments won’t come clean until the public demands the information about UFOs that is being kept hidden. Many of Hellyer’s claims seem far-fetched — namely, that some alien species originated from Mars, Venus and one of Saturn’s moons. But he insists that extraterrestrials have helped humans develop technologies such the microchip, LED lights and the Kevlar vest.

2. Evidence of microscopic life may have been found on Mars

Is it possible that NASA’s scientists discovered life on Mars in 2007? Recently, news reports have surfaced that researchers examining Martian rover data — the unmanned space probes sending photos and atmospheric samples back to earth — may have found evidence of microscopic life on the red planet.

Apparently, the Spirit rover, which landed in the Gusev crater near the Martian equator, photographed “finger-like” rock formations called stromatolites, which are formed when microbial colonies are trapped in moist sediment. In addition, in 2014, another of NASA’s rovers recorded evidence of methane gas. In fact, over 90 percent of methane gas found on earth is produced by living organisms, leading to the possibility that some microbe life forms may still exist on Mars.

According to astrophysicist Dan Brown of Nottingham Trent University, “Finding live on Mars or even the past presence of life has been a driving goal and infamous challenge for missions to Mars.” Unfortunately, the Spirit rover, which discovered the distinctive silica patterns that have so intrigued scientists, was decommissioned after it got stuck in the Martian soil. It will be 2020, at the earliest, before the next rover probe is launched to do a follow-up mission.

3. Deeply mysterious signals are coming from space

SETI is a non-profit scientific institute dedicated to discovering the origins of the universe and searching for evidence of extraterrestrial civilizations. In particular, the organization uses a network of radio telescopes to try and detect signals that may indicate the existence of intelligent life somewhere in deep outer space.

In 2007, a researcher named Duncan Lorimer, from West Virginia University, was analyzing data from the Parkes observatory in Australia when he uncovered what seemed to be Ian unusual signal. They have been described as “shrieks from the black abyss of the universe unlike anything ever found before. And they are deeply mysterious.”

Initially, other scientists did not know what to make of the findings. However, similar bursts have since been detected by the Arecibo facility in Puerto Rico. Researchers have dubbed these signals “fast radio bursts” of FRBs for short. No one quite knows what to make of them. They remain unidentified and unexplained, but of tantalizing interest.

4. Extraterrestrial life may have hitched a meteor to Earth

Dr. Eric Haseltine is a neuroscientist who also served as the U.S. Associate Director of National Intelligence in 2006. He’s been asked by programs like 60 Minutes to speak on the record about UFOs and Area 51, where ET enthusiasts believe the government is hiding evidence of alien existence. Haseltine has declined to divulge any information that would violate his national security obligations. However, he has made it clear that the evidence he can talk about publicly strongly points in the direction that alien life has reached the earth.

Haseltine’s comments focus on primitive forms of life — microbes, extremophiles and even insects — that may have hitched a ride to earth via a meteor. To begin with, Haseltine notes that scientists at the National Institute for Aging now believe that DNA itself is older than the existence of the earth. That suggests that the human journey may not have begun on earth, but somewhere else in the galaxy.

In addition, Haseltine mentions several other intriguing findings, most notably a rock found in Antarctica that is believed to have originated from Mars. Some scientists believe the artifact, which cosmologists speculate may have been ejected from the red planet millions of years ago following an asteroid hit, contains fossil evidence of ancient single-celled organisms.

At present, the scientific community is uncertain about the significance of the findings. However, other researchers have found evidence to suggest that microbes, spores and even hardy insects could survive interplanetary travel via meteors. Microbes from outer space may not be quite as exciting as Martians, but the confirmation of any extraterrestrial life forms will be profound.

5. Kepler telescope may have discovered alien megastructure

NASA’s Kepler space telescope is designed to detect earthlike planets orbiting stars. Recently, it discovered a strange anomaly orbiting a sun designated KIC 8462852. Astronomers are not quite sure, but something is causing the starlight from KIC 8462852 to dip and then burst. Researchers have ruled out a variety of possible natural phenomena, leading some scientists to speculate that the most plausible explanation is an alien megastructure, possibly designed to harness solar power, orbiting the star.

The evidence keeps accumulating that we are not alone

Claims about evidence for aliens can range from sensationalistic to scientifically respectable. So, I reached out to a researcher with down-to-earth credentials and a lot of credibility when it comes to the search for extraterrestrial life.

Steve Vogt is a professor of astronomy and astrophysics at the University of California in Santa Cruz. He is also a member of the Lick Observatory, which home to the Automated Planet Finder, a program that is at the forefront of the scientific search for interstellar environments that could harbor life. I asked Vogt about the chances of finding life in outer space.  Here is some of what he had to say:

”Life (as we understand it) requires a stable place where water can exist in liquid form for the billions of years necessary for evolution to work its magic. If you look around the universe, those places where water is likely to exist stably in liquid form for billions of years is on or near the surface of a planet or similar body in a stable orbit in the habitable zone of a star. Our exoplanet program (now 20 years underway) has been aimed at determining how common such potentially habitable planets are in the universe.”

Asked about space aliens, Vogt said he couldn’t comment. However, he added, “We can now say, with great confidence, that potentially habitable rocky planets are exceedingly common, and occur around at least one out of every two stars (at least in our local stellar neighborhood). If you assume that our corner of the universe is typical, the numbers indicate that there are more potentially habitable rocky planets in the universe than there are grains of sand on all the beaches of Earth. With such statistics, it would be pretty hard to argue that life does not exist elsewhere.”

Vogt’s confidence is echoed by other highly respected scientists too. For instance, “I think we’re going to have strong indications of life beyond Earth within a decade, and I think we’re going to have definitive evidence within 20 to 30 years,” insists Ellen Stofan, NASA’s chief scientist. In all probability, there will be some earth-shattering findings and revelations ahead. The evidence is accumulating that we are not alone.

Filament points to Milky Way black hole

Filament points to Milky Way black hole

A recently discovered giant filament – 2.3 light-years long – points toward Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at our galaxy’s heart.

SagA-filament-annotated-e1514292207696.jpg

The bright source near the bottom of this image, Sagittarius A* – pronounced Sagittarius A-star – is thought to be the location of the supermassive black hole at the center of our home galaxy, the Milky Way. See the filament appearing to point toward it? The filament might be caused by high-speed particles kicked away from the black hole, or it might be something even stranger.

One of the most mysterious and interesting known locations in our neighborhood of space is the center of our home galaxy, the Milky Way. It’s thought to contain a supermassive black hole, with a mass of some 4 million suns. Astronomers call this region and its possible black hole Sagittarius A* (aka Sgr A*, pronounced Sagittarius A-star). In 2016, Farhad Yusef-Zadeh of Northwestern University reported his discovery of an unusual filament in this region. The filament is about 2.3 light-years long and appears to curve around the site of the black hole. Now, another team of astronomers has employed a new technique to obtain a high-quality image of the curved filament. These astronomers said their new image supports the idea that the filament is pointing toward the black hole. The new image has led to some fascinating speculations as to the nature of this mystery filament.

A paper describing the new image – and astronomers ideas based upon it – was published in the December 1, 2017 issue of the peer-reviewed Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Mark Morris of the University of California, Los Angeles, led the imaging study. He said in a December 20, 2017 statementfrom the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA):

With our improved image, we can now follow this filament much closer to the galaxy’s central black hole, and it is now close enough to indicate to us that it must originate there. However, we still have more work to do to find out what the true nature of this filament is.

Artist’s concept of Milky Way galaxy, showing the locations of the central, supermassive black hole and our solar system. The entire galaxy is about 100,000 light-years across. Our sun lies about 26,000 light-years from the center.

Image via ZMEScience.

Researchers have considered three possible explanations for the filament:

The first is that it is caused by high-speed particles kicked away from the supermassive black hole. A spinning black hole coupled with gas spiraling inwards can produce a rotating, vertical tower of magnetic field that approaches or even threads the event horizon, the point of no return for infalling matter. Within this tower, particles would be sped up and produce radio emission as they spiral around magnetic field lines and stream away from the black hole.

The second, more fantastic, possibility is that the filament is a cosmic string, theoretical, as-yet undetected objects that are long, extremely thin objects that carry mass and electric currents. Previously, theorists had predicted that cosmic strings, if they exist, would migrate to the centers of galaxies. If the string moves close enough to the central black hole it might be captured once a portion of the string crosses the event horizon.

The final option is that the position and the direction of the filament aligning with the black hole are merely coincidental superpositions, and there is no real association between the two. This would imply it is like dozens of other known filaments found farther away from the center of the galaxy. However, such a coincidence is quite unlikely to happen by chance.

Each of the scenarios being investigated would provide intriguing insight if proven true. The scientists’ statement continued:

For example, if the filament is caused by particles being ejected by Sgr A*, this would reveal important information about the magnetic field in this special environment, showing that it is smooth and orderly rather than chaotic.

The second option, the cosmic string, would provide the first evidence for a highly speculative idea with profound implications for understanding gravity, space-time and the Universe itself.

Evidence for the idea that particles are being magnetically kicked away from the black hole would come from observing that particles further away from Sgr A* are less energetic than those close in. A test for the cosmic string idea will capitalize on the prediction by theorists that the string should move at a high fraction of the speed of light. Follow-up observations with the VLA should be able to detect the corresponding shift in position of the filament.

Even if the filament is not physically tied to Sgr A*, the bend in the shape of this filament is still unusual. The bend coincides with, and could be caused by, a shock wave, akin to a sonic boom, where the blast wave from an exploded star is colliding with the powerful winds blowing away from massive stars surrounding the central black hole.

Co-author Miller Goss, from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Socorro, New Mexico, said:

We will keep hunting until we have a solid explanation for this object. And we are aiming to next produce even better, more revealing images.

Unannotated image of the great cosmic filament at the center of our Milky Way galaxy. This radio image is from the NSF’s Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array.

Bottom line: Astronomers have obtained a new image of the 2.3-light-year-long filament that curves around Sagittarius A*, the region of our galaxy thought to contain a supermassive black hole.

Yes! Time Travel Is “Technically Possible”

Yes! Time Travel Is “Technically Possible”

By: Nidhi Goya

Time travel has been one of man’s wildest fantasies for centuries. Many science fiction movies have shown people getting into a vehicle of some sort and then magically arriving in the past or future.

Sounds crazy, right? But maybe not. According to astrophysicist Ethan Siegel, time travel is technically possible, but you’ll ONLY be able to go back into the past, not into future.

Siegel explained this by referring to Einstein’s General Relativity and the concept of negative mass/energy particles. He said that a person could travel through a wormhole and go back in time.

Siegel wrote, “If this negative mass/energy matter exists, then creating both a supermassive black hole and the negative mass/energy counterpart to it, while then connecting them, should allow for a traversable wormhole.” He added, “No matter how far apart you took these two connected objects from one another, if they had enough mass/energy – of both the positive and the negative kind – this instantaneous connection would remain.”

The wormhole could be constructed in such a way that allows one end of it to remain almost motionless, and the other is traveling at roughly the speed of light. Then, one could “step into the relativistic end of the wormhole, and you arrive back on Earth only one year after the wormhole was created, while you yourself may have had 40 years of time to pass.”

Siegel explained, “If, 40 years ago, someone had created such a pair of entangled wormholes and sent them off on this journey, it would be possible to step into one of them today, in 2017, and wind up back in time at the mouth of the other one … back in 1978. The only issue is that you yourself couldn’t also have been at that location back in 1978; you needed to be with the other end of the wormhole, or traveling through space to try and catch up with it.”

The Sole Survivor of the Cassini Mission Is Still Lost in Space

After its 20-year-long sojourn in space, on September 15, NASA’s Cassinispacecraft plunged into Saturn’s atmosphere, becoming one with the longtime object of its study. While many continue to mourn the loss of this benevolent spacecraft, NASA announced a bit of unexpected good news this month — one piece of Cassini survived, and it’s wandering around space right now.

According to NASA, the aluminum shell of one of Cassini’s instruments, called the Cosmic Dust Analyzer (CDA), was “jettisoned in order to open the instrument’s aperture” back in 1997. The CDA itself stayed on the spacecraft, of course, and was used to study tiny particles within Saturn’s rings.

But since the CDA cover came off the spacecraft in its nascency, it never reached the Saturn system, and didn’t burn up in the planet’s atmosphere like the rest of the probe.

“This early cover release was necessary in order to begin measurements of the interplanetary and interstellar dust background,” NASA writes in an article about the CDA.

The CDA. (NASA/JPL-Caltech)

Inverse has reached out to NASA to find out where the CDA might be right now. According to a post the agency wrote about the instrument back on December 22, it expects that the CDA cover is traveling in an “Earth-like orbit” with an “approximate speed of 19 miles per second (30 kilometers per second).” It may be bright enough to be visible with a very powerful telescope, but so far, NASA hasn’t been able to confirm that.

The Cassini mission, which ended this past September, left Earth on October 15, 1997. It entered the Saturn system on June 30, 2004, where it spent the next 13 years observing Saturn and several of its moons, including Enceladus, Tethys, Dione, Helene, Rhea, Titan, Iapetus, and Phoebe.

This "Farewell to Saturn" is a mosaic of images from Cassini. (NASA/JPL-Caltech/Space Science Institute)

While Cassini fans would probably love to see this piece of the spacecraft in a museum, it’s highly unlikely that NASA would spend the time and money needed to recover it. After all, it’d be a really expensive trip for an aluminum cover.

That said, maybe the best way to remember Cassini isn’t by bringing back a piece of it that has already been lost to the cosmos. The scientific data and images that Cassini beamed back to Earth will inspire new discoveries for years to come. With that, the best mission of our lifetime lives on forever — a piece of it orbiting alone just adds to that poetry.

WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR RELIGION IF WE FIND EXTRATERRESTRIAL LIFE

WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR RELIGION IF WE FIND EXTRATERRESTRIAL LIFE

How will humankind react after astronomers hand over rock-solid scientific evidence for the existence of life beyond the Earth? No more speculating. No more wondering. The moment scientists announce this discovery, everything will change. Not least of all, our philosophies and religions will need to incorporate the new information.

Searching for signs of life

Astronomers have now identified thousands of planets in orbit around other stars. At the current rate of discovery, millions more will be found this century.

Having already found the physical planets, astronomers are now searching for our biological neighbors. Over the next fifty years, they will begin the tantalizing, detailed study of millions of planets, looking for evidence of the presence of life on or below the surfaces or in the atmospheres of those planets.

And it’s very likely that astronomers will find it. Despite the fact that more than one-third of Americans surveyed believe that aliens have already visited Earth, the first evidence of life beyond our planet probably won’t be radio signals, little green men or flying saucers. Instead, a 21st century Galileo, using an enormous, 50-meter-diameter telescope, will collect light from the atmospheres of distant planets, looking for the signatures of biologically significant molecules.

Astronomers filter that light from far away through spectrometers – high-tech prisms that tease the light apart into its many distinct wavelengths. They’re looking for the telltale fingerprints of molecules that would not exist in abundance in these atmospheres in the absence of living things. The spectroscopic data will tell whether a planet’s environment has been altered in ways that point to biological processes at work.

If we aren’t alone, who are we?

With the discovery in a distant planet’s light spectrum of a chemical that could only be produced by living creatures, humankind will have the opportunity to read a new page in the book of knowledge. We will no longer be speculating about whether other beings exist in the universe. We will know that we not alone

An affirmative answer to the question “Does life exist anywhere else in the universe beyond Earth?” would raise immediate and profoundly important cosmotheological questions about our place in the universe. If extraterrestrial others exist, then my religion and my religious beliefs and practices might not be universal. If my religion is not universally applicable to all extraterrestrial others, perhaps my religion need not be offered to, let alone forced on, all terrestrial others. Ultimately, we might learn some important lessons applicable here at home just from considering the possibility of life beyond our planet.

In my book, I investigated the sacred writings of the world’s most widely practiced religions, asking what each religion has to say about the uniqueness or non-uniqueness of life on Earth, and how, or if, a particular religion would work on other planets in distant parts of the universe.

Extrasolar sinners?

Let’s examine a seemingly simple yet exceedingly complex theological question: could extraterrestrials be Christians? If Jesus died in order to redeem humanity from the state of sin into which humans are born, does the death and resurrection of Jesus, on Earth, also redeem other sentient beings from a similar state of sin? If so, why are the extraterrestrials sinful? Is sin built into the very fabric of the space and time of the universe? Or can life exist in parts of the universe without being in a state of sin and therefore without the need of redemption and thus without the need for Christianity? Many different solutions to these puzzles involving Christian theology have been put forward. None of them yet satisfy all Christians.

Mormon worlds

Mormon scripture clearly teaches that other inhabited worlds exist and that “the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God” (Doctrines and Covenants 76:24). The Earth, however, is a favored world in Mormonism, because Jesus, as understood by Mormons, lived and was resurrected only on Earth. In addition, Mormon so-called intelligences can only achieve their own spiritual goals during their lives on Earth, not during lifetimes on other worlds. Thus, for Mormons, the Earth might not be the physical center of the universe but it is the most favored place in the universe. Such a view implies that all other worlds are, somehow, lesser worlds than Earth.

Bahá’í without bias

Members of the Bahá’í Faith have a view of the universe that has no bias for or against the Earth as a special place or for against humans as a special sentient species. The principles of the Bahá’í Faith – unifying society, abandoning prejudice, equalizing opportunities for all people, eliminating poverty – are about humans on Earth. The Bahá’í faithful would expect any creatures anywhere in the universe to worship the same God as do humans, but to do so according to their own, world-specific ways.

Light years from Mecca

The pillars of the faith for Muslims require the faithful to pray five times every day while facing Mecca. Because determining the direction of Mecca correctly could be extremely difficult on a quickly spinning planet millions of light years from Earth, practicing the same faith on another world might not make any sense. Yet the words of the Qu’ran tell us that “Whatever beings there are in the heavens and the earth do prostrate themselves to Allah” (13:15). Can terrestrial Muslims accept that the prophetically revealed religion of Muhammad is intended only for humans on earth and that other worlds would have their own prophets?

Astronomers as paradigm-shatterers

At certain moments throughout history, astronomers’ discoveries have exerted an outsized influence on human culture. Ancient Greek astronomers unflattened the Earth – though many then chose to forget this knowledge. Renaissance scholars Copernicus and Galileo put the Earth in motion around the Sun and moved humans away from the center of the universe. In the 20th century, Edwin Hubble eliminated the very idea that the universe has any center at all. He demonstrated that what the universe has is a beginning in time and that, bizarrely, the universe, the very fabric of three-dimensional space, is expanding.

Clearly, when astronomers offer the world bold new ideas, they don’t mess around. Another such paradigm-shattering new idea may be in the light arriving at our telescopes now.

The ConversationNo matter which (a)theistic background informs your theology, you may have to wrestle with the data astronomers will be bringing to houses of worship in the very near future. You will need to ask: Is my God the God of the entire universe? Is my religion a terrestrial or a universal religion? As people work to reconcile the discovery of extrasolar life with their theological and philosophical worldviews, adapting to the news of life beyond Earth will be discomfiting and perhaps even disruptive.

NASA astronomer told why scientists have not yet found aliens

US-warns-Russia-Aliens-on-Their-Way-Will-Attack-in-2017-Aliens-2017-Photo.jpg?resize=696%2C430&ssl=1

Humanity has not yet established contact with extraterrestrial civilizations or has not found traces of extraterrestrial life because most of the potentially inhabited planets are most likely formed by ice-covered water worlds, said Alan Stern, the head of the New Horizons mission, at the annual planetary conference DPS in the US Provost.

“Oceans worlds are one of the most ideal environments for the birth of life, the conditions in the waters of such planets are almost independent of which stars they revolve around, how far away they are from them and how long such a star has to live.” They are not threatened by supernova explosions , meteorite impacts, sudden climate changes and other events that can destroy life on Earth, “explains Stern.

More than half a century ago, the American astronomer Frank Drake developed a formula for calculating the number of civilizations in the Galaxy, with whom contact is possible, trying to assess the chances of discovering extraterrestrial intelligence and life.

The physicist Enrico Fermi, in response to a sufficiently high estimate of the chances of interplanetary contact by Drake’s formula, formulated a thesis now known as the Fermi paradox: if there are so many alien extraterrestrials, why does humanity not observe any of their tracks?

This paradox scientists have tried to solve in many ways, the most popular of which is the hypothesis of the “unique Earth”. It says that for the emergence of intelligent beings, unique conditions are necessary, in fact, a complete copy of our planet.

Other astronomers believe that we can not communicate with aliens because the galactic civilizations either disappear too fast for us to notice them, or because they actively hide the fact of their existence from humanity.

Stern proposed his own explanation of this phenomenon, which does not require the existence of galactic “camarillas” of rational races or justifications for the uniqueness of the Earth.

Studying the lists of newly discovered exoplanets that are inside the “life zone”, a special area of the orbit where water can exist in liquid form, the planetologist from NASA drew attention to the fact that many planets, similar in size to the Earth, are not stony celestial bodies, but oceanic worlds.

They can be either completely covered with liquid water or the ice crust under which the icy ocean lies, similar to those found on satellites of Saturn and Jupiter.

This observation made him think about how often life can arise on such planets, which will influence the probability of its origin and how such water forms of life can establish contact with mankind.

As his calculations showed, such oceans, covered with a thick crust of ice, should be much more friendly for the birth and development of life than the “open” planets, similar to the Earth. As Stern believes, if extraterrestrial life exists, then it most likely lives in the depths of such water worlds.

“The inhabitants of such worlds will not even suspect that there are stars, cosmos and other planets in the Universe, the closest equivalent of our space program will be the access to the surface of their water world, so neither we nor they will suspect about the existence of each other, – concludes the scientist.

27 UFO Sightings In Illinois Since September

27 UFO Sightings In Illinois Since September

But there were no reports in the town one researcher calls the "UFO Capital of Chicagoland."

Illinois is known to some researchers as a "UFO" hotspot, especially Cook County, and in recent months it's lived up to its reputation. According to the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC), Illnois had 27 reported sightings of strange objects since September, including several sightings in Springfield, plus reports from Champaign, Carbondale, Wilmette, Chicago, Batavia and Rockford.

The most recent sighting reported to NUFORC was Dec. 15 in Pawnee, a village in Sangamon County, when a resident reported seeing "very bright orange flashing lights" for about 15 minutes at about 3:30 a.m.

"We woke up to bright flashing lights on our window," the resident told NUFORC. "Went onto deck and could see a row of orange lights on ground and a globe like set of rotating lights about 20 feet from the row of lights on ground."

Cheryl Costa, a New York-based blogger and author, has analyzed UFO sighting reports nationwide and said Illinois had more than 4,000 reports between 2001 and 2015, making it one of the top states for UFO reports.

"Illinois had four or five counties in the top 100 and Cook County was third in the nation," Costa told Patch earlier this year. "Illinois was number 8 in the country with 4,191 reported sightings in 15 years."

While Chicago had a reported sighting on Oct. 27, the town Costa called Cook County's "UFO capital" hasn't had any reports since April, according to NUFORC. Between 2001 and 2015, Tinley had 168 reported sightings, according to Costa, who called the numbers "unusually high." For comparison, all of Will County had a total of 283 sightings during the same period.

Someone in Chicago reported this broad-daylight sighting on Oct. 27:

I was headed southbound on the CTA bus on Damen Ave. on 10/27/17 the day way heavily overcast. Somewhere between (Clybourn) street and Webster where less buildings were the best to my recollection is where I noticed this object in the sky. I was looking up towards the West sky noticed how thickly covered in clouds it was then that moment there was a parting of the clouds and I saw a sphere. It was gray with a glow almost (lunar) like, did not do anything but just stay there for that brief moment and the clouds covered it up again.

On Dec. 1 near Springfield, a witness reported seeing a cigar-shaped object in the sky:

I was traveling on a rural road outside of Springfield with my daughter and in the sky was a very low flying slow moving cigar shaped object with a bright white light on each side of the object and had no sound to it. It was traveling South east bound at a very slow speed.

Someone in Plato Center, located in unincorporated Kane County, reported seeing a "strange, bright blue orb" fall from the sky, along with a mysterious black SUV. The person said their dog even reacted to the sighting and the sound of helicopters, detailing the experience in a lengthy report:

I was watching TV in my bedroom when a strange bright, blue orb passed across my shade drawn window right in front of my that I was facing. It was going from east to west as I looked south. It crossed the top half of the window width in about 2-3 seconds, falling at approximately a 25 degree angle. I had my bedroom light on so to see it through my raffia type shades it had to be very bright. I thought it could be a meteor, large drone or UFO and thought it was going to crash some where into the area in the fields by Connors Rd or just west toward Rt 47.I quickly jumped up and went to the window in the bathroom where it had no shades to see if there was fire in the nearby field. Didn't see any. Went out onto the front porch to look and listen and heard many dogs or coyotes barking. It was so unusual that I decided to get in my car and drive down the road to see if I could see some crash or fire. ...
Didn't see anything so I turned around half way up the hill before Rt 47 then drove back to Kendall. When I came to the stop sign at Connors and Kendall, I looked South and saw a large Black SUV type vehicle with headlights off, but yellow parking lights on, near the Woodlands entrance but on the East side of the road. It was strange as I couldn't imagine a car stopped there unless it had seen it to. I thought about stooping to ask them if they had seen it, but it didn't feel right being there, so I didn't.I drove back home, parked in the garage, got out of the car and immediately heard a Helicopter overhead going west near to me and then just past Rt. 47. I went out onto the driveway to see if I could spot it and immediately heard a second Helicopter that seemed to be coming up from the south along Rt 47 west of me.All of this had taken place in under 15 minutes.I stayed out in the middle of the dark driveway for about 3 or 4 minutes until I didn't hear the helicopters anymore.((Dog's name deleted)) was barking inside the house so I closed the garage door and went inside to calm him.I then opened the front door and went onto the porch to listen. I didn't hear anything more. No helicopters or strange sounds, or lights even at that point--probably about 9:50 pm.It was all very strange and I now think maybe some type of UFO fell nearby and the helicopters were out scouting or retrieving. The large Black SUV could have been Men in Black as the car gave me a strange feeling, big, dark, tinted windows I think, and in a strange country road location to stop and pull over.

In case you're wondering what the National UFO Reporting Center is, it's been around since 1974, and it investigates UFO sightings and has put together a list of more than 90,000 sightings around the world. You can catch up and read more about each of the UFO sightings in Illinois here. The report dates back decades.

PENTAGON UFO PROBE - Truth about UFO videos the US Government did NOT release

PENTAGON UFO PROBE - Truth about UFO videos the US Government did NOT release

CLAIMS the US Government is on the brink of a major revelation about "alien visitations of Earth" were today undermined after it emerged there was no official disclosure of UFO video footage, as was widely believed.

Alien truth seekers have been celebrating after the Pentagon confirmed the Defense Intelligence Agency ran a £16.5 million five year probe into UFOs called the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Programme (AATIP).

The US Government had always maintained it stopped looking at the UFO phenomenon in 1969.

The probe was led by former intelligence officer Luis Elizondo, who resigned in October.

He resigned to become a key figure in a crowd-funded UFO research group set up by former Blink 182 singer Tom DeLonge called To The Stars Academy.

According to The Washington Post, Luis Elizondo essentially got the videos under somewhat false pretences.

Alejandro Rojas

It has also been widely claimed that the Pentagon officially released two separate videos of a seemingly inexplicable UFO filmed by two US Navy pilots off the coast of San Diego in 2004.

The belief by alien conspiracy theorists that the US Government had officially released the footage led to claims that there would be an imminent disclosure from the government that aliens have been visiting earth for decades and it has been kept a closely guarded secret.

Campaign group The Disclosure Activists, which seeks for "the truth" about aliens was convinced something big was on the horizon after the story broke.

It issued a press release entitled Disclosure of Extraterrestrial Intelligences Engaging Our Planet Is Underway after the first reports of the videos being released by the government.

In the release Dr Lisa Galarneau, Co-Founder of The Disclosure Activists, said: "it now appears our US government is prepared to open the kimono. What do they know that they are obviously on track to reveal?"

And Steve Bassett, the only registered "disclosure" lobbysist in the US added: " For the first time the US military has released gun camera footage from a military plane intercepting a UAP (UFO)."

However, it appears their excitement was premature.

It has emerged Mr Elizondo was personally responsible for releasing the videos after resigning, and not an official department of the government.

RELATED ARTICLES

The Defense Intelligence Agency confirmed it had not released any “information, files or videos,” and said there had been some “confusion” over the purpose of the five-year probe.

The Washington Post reported seeing an internal memo in which Mr Elizondo had tried to get the videos be “cleared for public viewing” on grounds they could “help educate pilots and improve aviation safety.”

However, he has since said in interviews, his intention was to use them for UFO research and to expose the top secret project.

Alejandro Rojas, from Open Minds TV, told The Sun: ”According to The Washington Post, Luis Elizondo essentially got the videos under somewhat false pretences.

"He claimed he wanted to use the videos for training pilots - he didn't say he wanted to use the videos to demonstrate that UFOs are real, which is what's happening.

UFO-Navy

YouTube

A still from the US Navy radar video (left) and a photograph of the UFO (right).

"I think that's why the clips are so short and - especially with the second one - there is so little information attached to it.

"I think perhaps they thought just in case somebody gets a hold of this and tries to turn it into a big UFO thing, we just won't give them much information.”

Aviation website Flyingmag.com said it was sceptical about much of the original story broken by the New York Times.

In an article, it said: “The Pentagon didn’t release those UFO videos, an official (Mr Elizondo) connected to a Las Vegas company who resigned in October did.

“The New York Times story makes it seem as though the release of the videos came from high-level government officials, glossing over the information that the disclosures were actually spearheaded by an official who led the Pentagon's relatively small UFO hunting program and who has since resigned to join a Las Vegas company called To the Stars Academy of the Arts and Sciences that is seeking private funding for more UFO research.

“That’s a major distinction that most in the media appear to be ignoring since the original Times report appeared.”

RELATED ARTICLES

Even some UFO believers are now accepting there is no big “disclosure” around the corner, however, the have accused the US Government of backpedaling, and remain convinced there is more to come out at some stage.

Mr Rojas said: "It does seem to me like they might be backtracking.

"They haven't clarified exactly what the confusion is, but I'm not surprised that they are scrambling over this now.

"It puts them in a spot because perhaps they're not ready or even willing to come out and talk about this.

"It wouldn't be the first time the government has tried to spin things in a different direction on this topic.”

A spokesman for the Department of Defense, which is responsible for the Defense Intelligence Agency, said: "The AATIP’s mandate, when it existed, was to assess far-term foreign advanced aerospace threats to the United States."

Mr Elizondo claims the project did not end in 2012 and he continued to work on it with the CIA and Navy and now has a replacement who has taken over.

Interior Ministry rules out link between HAARP, Iran earthquakes

TEHRAN – Deputy Interior Minister for Security and Law Enforcement Mohammad Hossein Zolfaqari has ruled out a link between repeated earthquakes in Iran and the HAARP project, saying the claim lacks scientific basis.

The High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) was initiated as an ionospheric research program jointly funded by the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Navy, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). It was designed and built by BAE Advanced Technologies (BAEAT). Its original purpose was to analyze the ionosphere and investigate the potential for developing ionospheric enhancement technology for radio communications and surveillance.

As a university-owned facility, HAARP is a high-power, high-frequency transmitter used for study of the ionosphere.

Over time, HAARP has been blamed for generating such catastrophes, as well as thunderstorms, in Iran, Pakistan, Haiti, Turkey, Greece and the Philippines, and even major power outages, the downing of TWA Flight 800, Gulf War syndrome, and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Zolfaqari told ILNA in an interview published on Tuesday that the Interior Ministry has not received any report from the country’s military and scientific institutions on the link between the earthquakes and the HAARP.

Iran has been struck by several earthquakes in recent months, including the Kermanshah earthquake, which left at least 630 people dead and more than 8,100 injured.

Asked about strange lights in several cities’ skies during the past few days, the deputy interior minister said no official report was made about the incidents and the ministry only knew about them through social media.

“Military and air defense ranks, who are active in their fields, would have informed us if there had been something important,” he stated.

ufo.jpg

The Most Incredible and Mysterious Lost Inventions

The Most Incredible and Mysterious Lost Inventions

We humans are a species ever focused on advancing our knowledge, of inexorably moving past perceived boundaries to find new ways to break past our confines into fascinating future realms of discovery. This has done much to progress our kind, and the tireless pursuit of our great thinkers and scientists has allowed us to achieve great leaps and bounds throughout the ages. However, as much as we advance there are those discoveries that have been lost to us for whatever reasons that serve to remind us of what could have been. Here we have astounding, sometimes seemingly improbable breakthroughs that smash through our current understanding of our world, but which have slipped into the forgotten nooks and crannies of time.

Some of the more mysterious and impressive of lost inventions are those from the ancient world, many of which were well ahead of their times and some which are thoroughly steeped in shadowy myth and lore. Perhaps the most well-known of these was a destructive weapon developed in the Byzantine Empire in the 7th century, and popularly known as “Greek Fire.” The material was more or less a volatile concoction that was sprayed from a type of cannon and which could supposedly ignite anything, continuing to burn without sputtering out and to destroy even upon water. This vast ability to annihilate the enemy in Naval battles made Greek Fire one of the most feared weapons of the time, and its manufacture one of the most jealously guarded military secrets of the Byzantine Empire.

Greek Fire seems to have first mentioned by the historian Theophanes, who described its origins. It was written that the Emperor at the time, Konstantinos IV, had been desperately looking for some sort of secret weapon to use in the face of invaders from the Middle East, and it was then that he was approached by a Syrian refugee and chemist named Kallinikos. The Emperor took him in, and in return Kallinikos supposedly taught him the secrets of making Greek Fire, which was then used to horrific effect and resounding success in a naval battle against Arab forces under the command of Khalif of Syria in 678 AD. The Greek Fire reportedly absolutely obliterated the enemy, who could find no effective way to put the ravenous flames out, saving the city of Constantinople in the process. According to the enemy, the only things that showed any promise at all of remotely stopping the fires were vinegar, sand, or urine, which could not be provided in the amounts needed to stop the onslaught. The secret weapon would then be effectively used for centuries against all who would defy them.

While this particular origin story may be mythical, at least in parts, it is widely believed that Greek Fire was indeed a real thing, and that it was likely developed and perfected over many years by various chemists working in unison. Not surprisingly, considering it was seen as such a decisively devastating weapon in Naval battles, many other powers wished to gain the secrets to its formula for themselves, but the exact recipe was so intensely guarded that only a very few were said to have even known how to make it. In addition to the actual recipe for Greek Fire, there was a certain set of steps required to make it work, and even when Bulgar nomads managed to capture a sizable batch of the stuff in 814, they were apparently unable to discern how to turn it into the fearsome weapon they knew it to be. Even when a purportedly leaked recipe for Greek Fire was released in the book Book of Fires for the Burning of Enemies, no one who read it could actually make it work, and it seems there were many parts that had to come together just right, including the siphon delivery systems, for the material to be properly unleashed in all of its blazing, ravenous glory.

In this sense, the secret of Greek Fire and its utilization were kept safe from the world for centuries, and was never once successfully stolen by the enemy. However, this obsessive secrecy had a drawback in that it meant that the few who actually knew the secrets were unwilling to share them, and when they died the secrets died with them. This turns out to be exactly what happened, and the ingredients, handling, and methods needed to create Greek Fire have been thoroughly and forever lost to the sands of time, although there are some guesses and there have been numerous attempts to recreate it. It is thought that it used some sort of resin mixed with crude oil and other chemicals, and that it was likely a liquid, but that is about all we know. Although mankind in its infinite innovation for destruction has created serviceable replacements, such as napalm, the secret of the original Greek Fire remains an incomprehensible mystery.

Just as destructive and every bit as cloaked in mystery is an invention supposedly developed in the 3rd century BC by the ancient Greek engineer and mathematician Archimedes, of the city-state of Syracuse, then a part of ancient Greece. Among his many accomplishments during his life, such as the calculation of pi, Archimedes was also known to dabble in creating various machines of war for use against the Romans, such as catapults and even a massive metal claw that could be used to pick up and sink ships, and he once boasted, “Give me a lever long enough and a place to stand and I will move the world.”

Among these colorful and elaborate weapons was something he came up with that has gone on to be rather aptly called “The Archimedes Death Ray.” It supposedly consisted of a series of enormous mirrors that were arranged in such a precise way as to catch and focus sunlight to such a ferocious intensity that it could spontaneously ignite and burn Roman ships off the coast up to 1,000 feet away. According to the ancient historian Galen, the death ray was used to great effect during the Roman siege of Syracuse, destroying many enemy ships with its blazing, unstoppable rays. However, over the centuries all other records of the weapon and any hint of how it was built have been lost.

In recent times there have been various efforts to try and recreate the “Archimedes Death Ray.” The most famous example was two episodes of the television show Mythbusters, but they couldn’t figure out how to make it work. Then a group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) managed to set alight a replica Roman ship measuring 10 feet long, but the whole process took a total of 10 minutes, and this plus other factors make this is all a questionable result at best. The model ship was motionless at the time, with no accounting for the motion of the waves that would be expected, and furthermore, the time from ignition to fire was 10 minutes, which seems a bit long to be of any practical value in a high stakes battle in the middle of chaos. There is also the fact that Archimedes’ Death Ray never caught on as a popular or widely used weapon, and was only mentioned a handful of times. As Archimedes biographer Sherman K. Stein writes:

Had the mirrors done their work, they would have become a standard weapon; yet there is no sign that they were added to the armaments of the time.

Nevertheless, the lost invention has remained the focus of many a discussion, and is speculated and debated upon to this day. Another infamous weapon of war from ancient times is a material known as Damascus steel, which originated in the Middle East and was used to fashion swords and other blades for millennia. Named after the famed city of Syria, weapons made with this mysterious breed of steel were known for the distinctive patterns within the steel itself. Damascus blades were long considered to be legendary, with many abilities and characteristics attributed to them. They were said to hold their edge exceptionally well, were considered to be almost supernaturally sharp, able to cut clean through other lesser swords without losing sharpness, and were also renowned for their incredible durability and toughness, which were said to be far beyond that of a normal blade. Some legends say that they were literally unbreakable, and that they could cleanly slice in half a human hair falling upon them.

A replica Damascus steel blade

Due to these purported remarkable properties, it is understandable that Damascus steel weapons were highly prized and sought after, but towards around the 17th century their production dropped off until they apparently went extinct, with the secrets of their production and manufacture lost for the very same reasons that those of Greek Fire were also lost. There were just a few master sword smiths who knew the exact balance of ores and the technique for making them, and this was always a carefully guarded secret that very often went with them to the grave. Indeed, we still have no idea how the steel and its blades were created, and the swords and knives available today which are labelled as “Damascus Steel,” are merely approximations of what they may have been like.

It is thought that the secret to the amazing qualities of these weapons lies in the unique raw materials that were used, and that these ores may have simply been depleted and used up over time, making it now impossible to fashion one even if one knew how. Many of the unique properties of the steel are also attributed to the manufacturing process and the impurities in the blades that it produced, with elements such as tungsten or vanadium likely present, and there are even theories that the steel was imbued with naturally occurring nanowires and carbon nanotubes, which would account for its legendary toughness and resilience. Whatever the case may be, the secret to the correct combination of materials and forging techniques needed to produce a Damascus steel weapon have been lost to the ages.

Not every mysterious lost invention is related to destruction and warfare, and indeed another legendary example is a material from the reign of Roman Emperor Tiberius Caesar, that was referred to as Vitrum Flexile, or “flexible glass.” This was supposedly a type of extraordinary glass that would not break or shatter, but rather bend, and which could be hammered back together to repair any cracks or dents. It was said to have been invented by a craftsman by the name of Isadore of Seville, and according to an early account by Petronius, the mysterious craftsman one day presented a bowl made of the material to the Emperor, who had then thrown it to the floor. However, instead of shattering into pieces as would be expected, the miracle material simply bent inward, and could be easily repaired by simply hammering the dent out, resulting in the bowl being as good as new, with no hint at all of having received any damage.

Roman Emperor Tiberius Caesar

According to the tale, the inventor told the Emperor that he was the only one who knew the secret of how to make the flexible glass, after which he was beheaded in order to keep the invention under wraps and to prevent undermining the value of gold and silver. The story would later be retold by Pliny the Younger and then Cassius Dio, who speculated that the inventor had perhaps been a powerful alchemist or magician. It is unknown if this was ever a real material or not, but there are currently efforts to develop something very much like it in the modern world, so perhaps this was just an innovation that was well ahead of its time. Neither the mystery of Vitrum Flexile nor its method of manufacture have been explained.

Yet another invention from Roman times that has been lost to us is that of the so-called “Roman Concrete.” The Romans put to use a peculiar blend of concrete that allowed them to build some of their most astounding architectural creations. Roman concrete was extremely resistant to the effects of seawater, wind, weather, and cracking, and indeed outshines even the most advanced concrete mixtures today. It is precisely the reason why so many iconic Roman structures still stand in relatively good condition even thousands of years later. The thing is, this formula has been lost to the tides of time and no one really knows how they made it, other than that they likely used volcanic ash. Other than this, how they managed to create such structures to withstand the sea and the elements for so long remains unknown, and efforts to reproduce it based on the few remaining written records have proved unsuccessful.

Another beneficial Roman invention that we have lost is a concoction known as Mithridatium, named after the king Mithridates VI of Pontus, also known as Mithradates VI Eupator Dionysus and Mithridates the Great, who supposedly discovered it. A notorious emperor known for indiscriminate killing, Mithridates racked up quite a rogue’s gallery of enemies during his tenure as ruler, and as such became absolutely obsessed with the idea that he would be poisoned. Indeed his own father had been killed in such a way, and he was convinced that he was at the heart of an assassination conspiracy. To this effect, he supposedly began to work in unison with his court physician, Crateuas, to craft an almighty elixir that would render any poison worthless.

Mithridates VI of Pontus

The two supposedly went about testing and perfecting a wide range range of toxins, venomous, medications, and concoctions, which they tested on prisoners in the hopes of finding a universal antidote to all poisons. He was apparently successful, because it is written by such well-known intellectuals of the day as Pliny the Elder that he managed to develop a daily supplement to take that would purportedly protect him from all forms of poisons, and which was said to be composed of 54 different ingredients mixed and matched in precise quantities.

The result was that Mithridates was purportedly able to ingest any toxin known to man without suffering any ill effects, and it was apparently so effective that Mithridates would perform public exhibitions in which he would willingly be subjected to all manner of lethal toxins without any ill effect whatsoever. Indeed the antidote was so effective that it apparently thwarted his attempt to kill himself with poison in 63 BC, forcing him to take his own life by sword. He had, for all intents, crated a universal, cure-all antidote for any known poison. The drug, which would be known as Mithridatium, was apparently highly sought after during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, but the secret would die with him. In later years, a supposed handwritten recipe for the concoction was found in a cabinet at his home, but no one was able to make it work, and various efforts to try and recreate it have failed. The secret to this universal cure-all for poison, or even whether it ever really existed at all or was a sham, have been lost to time, although there were skeptics even in ancient times, with Pliny saying of Mithridates:

The Mithridatic antidote is composed of fifty-four ingredients, no two of them having the same weight, while of some is prescribed one sixtieth part of one denarius. Which of the gods, in the name of Truth, fixed these absurd proportions? No human brain could have been sharp enough. It is plainly a showy parade of the art, and a colossal boast of science.

Moving on into more modern times, we have still more mysterious supposed inventions that could have had world changing implications. In the 1970s, a man named Thomas Ogle claimed to have developed a new type of car carburetor that supposedly could make gasoline into a pressurized vapor and utilize it on the engine’s firing chambers in an incredibly super efficient manner, allowing vehicles to allegedly run over 100 miles to the gallon. In addition, Ogle claimed that any car could be modified to use the new system easily and for not much additional cost, making the whole thing seem almost too good to be true. Ogle himself showed off a Ford Galaxie that had supposedly been fitted with the new miracle carburetor and was clocked at around 113 miles to the gallon.

Thomas Ogle

Unfortunately we will never know. Ogle died in 1981 without ever having divulged just how the vapor carburetor worked, and even his death has sparked controversy, with some saying he was intentionally poisoned by someone within the big gasoline companies who stood to lose the most from such an innovative product. Considering that no one has ever been able to replicate the process, it has been speculated that the whole thing could have been a hoax, with Ogle simply showing an illusion utilizing hidden fuel tanks, but other have defended his invention as having been real, and in the end the fact is we simply don’t know. All we know is that it would have been a revolutionary development way ahead of its time.

Also in the 1970s was the development of a material that was claimed to be the most incredible heat shield humanity has ever devised or even imagined. The material was called Starlite, and was supposedly created by an amateur chemist and producer of hair products named Maurice Ward, who created it in his garage by accident using common and easily accessible ingredients. After many iterations of the material he claimed that it could be simply sprayed onto any object and make it virtually impervious to heat. To demonstrate it Ward would spray it on his hand and run a flame over it to ill effect, coat eggs with it and put them under an assault by blowtorch only to show that the insides were still raw and the shell cool to the touch, and even subject the material to a concentrated laser beam running at around a diamond melting 10,000°C without showing any stress. When subjected to a test simulating a nuclear blast a Starlite coated slab only showed a small scorch mark, and many of these tests were done under scientific conditions or even televised on national TV.

Hailed as a wonder material, Starlite is mostly considered to have been very real, and Ward was in talks to have it mass produced by many high level companies and even NASA, but could never agree to the terms or reach a deal, all negotiations falling through in the end mostly due to Ward’s own greed and insistence on keeping 51% of any proceeds from his invention. Before he was able to ever find an agreement he was comfortable with, Ward died in 2011 and took his jealously protected secret with him to the grave. Ward had in the past claimed that some of his closest family knew the secret to Starlight’s creation, which was allegedly disarmingly easy, but no one has come forward to conclusively show that this is the case. This potentially groundbreaking invention will probably be forever lost to us, and if you want to read about it more in detail you can check out an article I wrote on it here at MU some time ago.

In the 1990s there was another supposed invention brought forward relating to computers, when a Dutch man named Jan Sloot claimed that he had discovered a revolutionary new digital coding system that enabled immense amounts of data to be compressed into a very tiny amount of storage space. The kind of compression rates he was talking about were far beyond anything available at the time, and indeed beyond what we have available today, able to supposedly smash down an entire movie into just 8KB of space. He also claimed that he could play up to 16 movies at the same time running on just a 64KB chip and without first copying it to the computer’s hard drive.

It was all so amazing that Sloot had people definitely interested in investing in the technology, but nothing ever went through because Sloot would end up dead, apparently the day before he was to give up the secret to it all. No one really knew how it all worked except Sloot himself, and additionally there was supposedly a floppy disc holding the compiler that could not be located. It the intervening years the supposed remarkable invention has been picked apart and speculated upon, with some saying that it would be impossible based on current file compression knowledge, and others saying that Sloot had merely found an ingenious way to get around the physical limitations.

The most controversial of all of these is perhaps a claim in 1989 that a team of scientists had achieved a theoretical process through which nuclear reactions could be obtained at room temperature for the purpose of producing energy, usually called “cold fusion.” In theory it should be impossible, as fusion typically occurs under immense pressure and millions of degrees of heat in places such as the centers of stars. Cold fusion is a concept so alien to what we know that there has never been any workable accepted theory as to how it could be accomplished, but that didn’t stop many from trying, and some claimed success.

In 1989 there was an experiment carried out by the electrochemist Martin Fleischmann and colleague Stanley Pons, who created an apparatus which they claimed could produce “anomalous heat” through a cold fusion process. They purportedly did this all through electrolysis of heavy water on the surface of a palladium electrode, and at the time it was exciting development because it held the promise of solving the world’s energy crisis, but since it was against everything we know about fusion it was also immediately met with skepticism. Additionally, there was much made of the flaws in the experiment, and no one seemed to be able to replicate the results. Although some teams continue to pursue cold fusion, it is mostly considered by mainstream science to be a dead end, and it is unknown if Fleischmann and Pons managed to actually pull it off or not.

This is by no means a complete list of all of the amazing discoveries we have made as a species over the ages that have, for one reason or other, been lost to us in time, for better or worse. There are many others, and while many seem to hold almost a mythical quality to them one cannot help but wonder how the world may have been different if they had come to fruition in their respective times. There is doubt that some of these were ever real to begin with, but they paint a picture of a dogged quest along  path of discovery and understanding that has hit some bumps in the road. These supposed inventions remain lost to use, ciphers in the mist, which stir the imagination but which have been forever buried within the sands of time.

“Something” Is Being Monitored In Space!

“Something” Is Being Monitored In Space!

Something strange is going on, especially if we know that within 5 days, from December 22 to December 26, 2017 four superpower Nations; US, Russia, Japan and China have carried out rocket/missile launches, all carrying satellites.

something%2Bin%2Bspace.jpg

December 22, 2017: US (SpaceX) – Payload: 10 Satellites.
December 22, 2017: Japan – Payload: 2 Satellites.
December 26, 2017: Russia – Payload: 1 Satellite.
December 26, 2017: China – Payload: Unknown number of Satellites.

Note: For unknown reason Russia has lost contact with its satellite after the launch on December 26.

These launches at almost the same time are no coincidence and although it said that all these satellites are communication and weather satellites, we may wonder whether that is actually the case or that the real purpose of the payload is meant to monitor “Something” in space.

NASA Is Considering Sending a “Dragonfly” Drone to an Alien World

 17-00084_fs_missionoverviewv7a16x9-750x300.jpg
IN BRIEF
Saturn's largest moon, Titan, is a promising candidate for extraterrestrial life. NASA may be sending a "Dragonfly" drone to explore Titan's surface.

SENDING A “DRAGONFLY” DRONE TO AN ALIEN WORLD

With its vast oceans and methane-filled rivers and lakes, Titan is a prime candidate for the search for extraterrestrial life. While our knowledge of Saturn’s largest moon grew tremendously thanks to the now-defunct Cassini mission, the question of whether Titan is home to primitive lifeforms remains a mystery. Now, NASA’s recent selection of Titan as a possibility for further exploration under its next New Frontiers mission indicates they might want more answers. Selected from a field of 12 possibilities, NASA chose a quad-copter known as “Dragonfly” as one of two finalists for its next nearly billion-dollar mission. The “Dragonfly” drone, like its namesake, would flit between different parts of Titan’s surface to study the moon’s landscape and its habitability.

The other contender is a mission to the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, where a lander would snag a piece of the comet’s nucleus and return it to Earth for further study.

The plutonium-powered drone would alternate between taking measurements on the moon’s surface and flying from one site to another, traveling tens to hundreds of kilometers with each flight.

EXTRATERRESTRIAL EXPLORATION

Elizabeth Turtle, principal investigator for Dragonfly from Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, told the HUB, “Titan is a fascinating ocean world. It’s the only moon in the solar system with a dense atmosphere, weather, clouds, rain, and liquid lakes and seas—and those liquids are ethane and methane. There’s so much amazing science and discovery to be done on Titan.” During a NASA teleconference on December 20, 2017, Turtle said the Dragonfly was expected to land on Titan in 2034.

Many scientists have compared the conditions on the surface of Titan to theconditions that may have existed on early Earth. In fact, NASA even stated that, “In many respects, Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, is one of the most Earth-like worlds we have found to date.” So even if life is never discovered on Titan itself, it could be an ideal place to explore how life came about on Earth.

NASA Is Planning the First-Ever Interstellar Mission

NASA Is Planning the First-Ever Interstellar Mission

 wise_nebula-750x300.jpg
IN BRIEF
NASA wants to send a probe to an exoplanet to mark the 100th anniversary of Apollo 11. However, a brand new means of propulsion — and other advanced technologies — will be necessary if this project is to come to pass.

100 YEARS ON

NASA is in the earliest stages of planning an exoplanet expedition, set to mark the 100th anniversary of its first crewed Moon landing, Apollo 11. A small team based at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) hopes to send a spacecraft to a distant planet in search of life.

In 2016, a funding bill was passed that called upon NASA to investigate methods of interstellar travel that could reach at least 10 percent of the speed of light by 2069. It also requested a mission to Alpha Centauri, the closest star system to our own.

A probe is set to be sent to the chosen exoplanet to determine whether or not life is present. A few years after its launch, NASA will send a large telescope into deep space, which will use gravitational lensing to offer a full view of the exoplanet.

At present, there’s some debate as to whether Alpha Centauri or another system will be selected, as there are several candidates being considered. Of course, there are some big questions to be answered before this mission becomes a reality.

FANTASTIC VOYAGE

The basic concept for the 2069 exoplanet expedition was presented by JPL’s Anthony Freeman at the 2017 American Geophysical Union conference. He later described its current status as “nebulous” in an interview with New Scientist.

“We don’t know whether the mission objectives will be stable,” Freeman told Futurism via email. “We would find out a lot while the spacecraft is en route, which will change the questions that we need to answer before it arrives at its destination. All this makes it hard to pin down exactly what the mission concept should look like – hence my comment that it is nebulous.”

An artist's depiction of a space probe complete with a square, gold-foil solar sail, in front of a distant planet. NASA is planning one such exoplanet expedition to mark the centennial of Apollo 11.

One of the biggest challenges is developing a spacecraft that’s capable of reaching speeds that are even a fraction of light speed. Freeman questions whether it will even be possible to build a craft that can survive in the interstellar medium while travelling at these speeds, as particle impacts could prove to be a major problem.

Antimatter-matter collisions, nuclear propulsion, and laser-powered light sails are all being considered as technologies that could potentially help a craft reach the speeds that are required. It still remains to be seen whether any of these options will prove to be feasible, but at present NASA believes that the sails are the most promising.

Even if the craft can travel fast enough to make the journey to another system, the trip would likely take centuries. The process of solely decelerating the vehicle enough to make a safe entry into the exoplanet’s orbit is expected to add decades onto the overall travel time.

PREREQUISITE TECHNOLOGIES

An appropriately speedy propulsion method is crucial to this mission, but there are various other technologies that need to be put in place as well.

Freeman lists optical communication, reconfigurable spacecraft, compact space-qualified 3D printing capabilities, genomic programming, and artificial intelligence as some of prerequisites for the 2069 mission. A journey to an exoplanet is certainly ambitious, and the amount of research and development required to facilitate such a voyage reflects that.

Of course, the rewards could potentially be great. Proof of alien life is just one goal. The mission would also allow for a greater knowledge of the exoplanet in question, opportunities to study matter and radiation encountered en-route, and tests of the theory of relativity.

It will be no small feat to develop the propulsion technology necessary to get this project off the ground, and the practicalities of carrying out a mission that will last decades upon decades offer up their own challenges. However, it’s the scope of this project that makes it so alluring. Aiming for 2069, an anniversary that Freeman describes as still having a “certain resonance” for NASA’s current crop of scientists and engineers, ties this proposal to the sense of ambition that allowed for humankind’s prior accomplishments in stretching out into the stars.

Rethinking Aliens: We Found Life in a Place Once Considered Sterile

Rethinking Aliens: We Found Life in a Place Once Considered Sterile

ice-2062433_1920-750x300.jpg

RETHINKING ALIENS

Polar ice caps, where layers of soft snow compress into permanent ice over time, were believed to be inhospitable to any kind of life. But today, new research is shaking that belief, and has us rethinking aliens on other frozen worlds.

Researchers at the University of York traveled to the the Arctic and Antarctic regions to study microbial presence on the ground, and detected the presence of tiny creatures whose metabolic activity left its own unique marks on the frozen snowpack.

To identify the microorganisms, the team studied small samples of gas trapped in snow and compared them with similar snow samples artificially sterilized with UV lamps. In the untouched snow, they found high levels of methyl iodide, a gas produced by marine bacteria.

Typically, polar ice cores’ sterility makes them reliable snapshots of ancient climates: the absence of microorganisms means that the gas footprint trapped in ice has not been altered by any digestion process over millennia.

But in this new study, published in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface, the researchers concluded that polar snow is not sterile after all. In fact, the sampled gases may have been shaped by bacteria that remain alive as the soft snowpack slowly turns into ice, a process that may take decades.

LIFE ON FROZEN PLANETS?

This is not the first time that scientists have found life in unexpected places, like giant underground crystals or deep lakes buried under Antarctic ice. But this discovery is particularly significant, because up until now polar snowpacks had been considered nearly sterile.

Scientists also believe that these hardy bacteria offer insights into the possibility of alien life on frozen planets previously considered uninhabitable. “The fact that we have observed metabolically active bacteria in the most pristine ice and snow is a sign of life proliferating in environments where you wouldn’t expect it to exist,” said the lead author Kelly Redeker from the department of biology at the University of York in a statement.

“This suggests we may be able to broaden our horizons when it comes to thinking about which planets are capable of sustaining life,” he added.

This Former NASA Engineer Has Debunked Pretty Much Every Online UFO Sighting

This Former NASA Engineer Has Debunked Pretty Much Every Online UFO Sighting

Calm down, everyone.

You've probably seen more than your fair share of stories about UFO sightings. An astronaut on the ISS just has to catch footage of a fireball shooting across Earth's skies, and conspiracy theorists have a field day. Whether it's clouds that look like spaceships or rogue meteors, the internet loves a good alien conspiracy.

But former NASA engineer James Oberg has taken it upon himself to trawl through all the sightings and stories out there and politely debunk them, using science.

The conclusion? Most of your "insane UFO sightings" are little more than 'space dandruff', or your brain misunderstanding of what space travel actually looks like, says Oberg.

As Cara Giaimo from Atlas Obscura reports, after working at NASA mission control in the late '90s, Oberg went on to become a space journalist and historian. It wasn't until a few years ago that he started to take UFO sightings seriously.

His goal isn't to simply crap all over true believers - he calls that "stomping on dormice" - instead he's interested in teasing out exactly what's going on in these images and videos, and trying to figure out why people are reacting so strongly to them.

15816695917288139724?sqp=-oaymwEKCNgEELoCIAFISA&rs=AOga4qnETxuFcTdXf3Kh9O8deSewOIAU4A

His hypothesis? Our human senses are so used to focussing on relatively slow-moving objects, as well as certain light and atmosphere conditions, that when things change, our brains get confused.

"Our sensory system is functioning absolutely perfectly for Earth conditions," Oberg told Giaimo. "But we're still a local civilisation. Moving beyond our neighbourhood has been visually confusing."

Some of the most common sighting he has to debunk are to do with NASA astronauts reportedly seeing UFOS and being forced to keep silent, which Oberg says is a result of us watching too much sci-fi and not really understanding what space really looks like.

"I've had enough experience with real spaceflight to realise that what's being seen in many videos is nothing beyond the 'norm' from fully mundane phenomena occurring in unearthly settings," Oberg writes over on his site.

Here are some of the more common reports you might have seen on the interwebs, and Oberg's explanation of what's really going on:

UFO sightings at the International Space Station

The real story? Space dandruff, which are things that have shed off space vehicles during flight, like ice flakes, paint chips, or fragments of insulation. They're different to space junk, because they don't pose a real threat to spacecraft, Oberg explains on his site.

These flecks of dandruff are pretty common, but the reason they look so weird to us is that we're not used to the way these objects look when they fall while the space station is travelling through space.

It's the same reason why people see so many UFOs in the footage filmed by the cameras attached to NASA's old space shuttle missions.

In these videos, people usually freak out because the spots seem to dance in and out of view, or suddenly appear and disappear. Which is pretty creepy if you're sitting at your computer on Earth, but isn't that weird if you're on a space shuttle travelling 28,000 km/h (17,500 mph) - nothing's going to stay in your frame of vision very long.

And if the spacecraft is in the right position in relation to the Sun, it can also cast its shadow onto these objects to make them disappear and reappear, which is known as 'twilight shadowing'.

That weird Californian flare across the night sky

At the end of 2015, people in southern California freaked out when they saw a bright white light shoot across the night sky.

But, as was cleared up pretty soon after the incident, it was actually the result of a planned, unarmed missile test by the US Navy. That strange looking trail of light was the plume of particles blasted out by the rocket thruster.

So why did it look so creepy to everyone else? Because here on Earth, we're used to seeing thin vapour trails left by planes, or billowing smoke plumes. But most of us have rarely (if ever) seen anything so big and sharp as this.

"There were thousands of people who were absolutely processing their visual stimuli correctly if [the plume] was a mile away or 10 miles away [16 km]," Oberg told Atlas Obscura. "But it was 300 miles [482 km] away, up in space and sunlit, which never occurred to them, because this is not something within the normal range of human experience."

All of this isn't to say we should give up on sharing our UFO sightings, or assuming that everything is 'normal'.

"It's good to keep scanning space video for possible anomalies and reporting them quickly," Oberg told The Huffington Post back in 2013.

"The reason is, there is always a real chance that it could be a genuine anomaly, either a spacecraft malfunction or other threat, expected or unexpected. In the past, missions have failed because a clue that should have been seen out the window was overlooked."

Head over to Atlas Obscura to read the full interview, and more debunkings, with Oberg.

SpaceX Falcon 9 Rocket Launch from Jesse Watson on Vimeo.

Physicists Say the Epic Hyperdrive Scene in 'The Last Jedi' Is Plausible

laura dern vice admiral holdo

The quietly commanding Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo (Laura Dern) may be the true hero of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. And physicists are here to back her up.

This article contains gratuitous spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

In one of the most dramatic scenes from The Last Jedi — and possibly all of Star Wars — Vice Admiral Holdo rams the Resistance’s last remaining star cruiser through Supreme Leader Snoke’s flagship in a sacrifice that buys the fleeing members of The Resistance enough time to escape to the surface of Crait. Visually, the scene is breathtaking. But in terms of logistics, it might leave you wondering whether this feat is possible.

Don’t worry, though: We’re not here to give a Neil deGrasse Tyson-style “well, actually” debunk of this scene. Rather, we want to figure out whether Star Wars follows our rules of physics. And if it doesn’t then, well, what would it take?

the raddus

The Raddus, a Mon Calamari star cruiser, is much smaller than the Supremacy. But faster-than-light travel is a great equalizer.

Let’s start with some numbers.

The Raddus, a Mon Calamari star cruiser, is 11,280.74 feet (2.14 miles) long, 2,318.08 feet (0.44 miles) wide, and 1,514.84 feet (0.29 miles) tall. It’s a massive starship, but onscreen, you can see just how much smaller it is than the hulking Supremacy, which Wookieepedia, the ultimate source for Star Wars minutiae, says is 43,437.27 feet (8.22 miles) long, 37.6 miles wide, and 13,042 feet (2.47 miles) tall. Despite its comparably puny size, the immense energy generated by the Raddus’s forward momentum becomes a great equalizer in this showdown, and physics tells us it’s plausible that the smaller ship could cut through the First Order’s Star Dreadnought.

“If jumping to hyperspace is just super-quick acceleration where you instantaneously — or close to instantaneously — hit light speed, then what is depicted in the film would be approximately what would happen,” physics professor Patrick Johnson, the author of The Physics of Star Wars, tells Inverse.

supremacy star wars dreadmaught

The Supremacy, a First Order Mega-class Star Dreadnought, is bigger than a city.

As an example of this phenomenon, Johnson asks us to imagine something a little easier to picture: a car running into the side of an eighteen-wheeler truck.

“At a slow speed, it would dent it,” he says. “At a higher speed, [the truck] would really start to bow. And then if the car is going fast enough and is solid enough, it could cut right through it in the way that Snoke’s ship is cut along the path [the Raddus] went through.” It would take an awful lot of energy to get the starship going this fast, which Johnson has attempted to calculate for us.

Estimating the mass of the Raddus, assuming it’s 40 percent steel — or durasteel, more likely — and 60 percent air, Johnson tells us how much energy it would take to accelerate the ship. And since accelerating to the speed of light requires infinite energy, at least based on the way we understand jet propulsion, we’ll settle for a significant portion of light speed in this scenario.

“The force involved in accelerating the Raddus to just 90 percent of the speed of light would be ~6.8•10^21 Newtons,” says Johnson. This is a massive amount of energy, which increases with every tiny increment closer to light speed that the Raddus accelerates.

Once the ships collide, though, Newton’s third law says that the Supremacy exerts an equal and opposite force against the Raddus.

“The moment the Raddus started to make contact, it would experience an extra force going backward,” says Johnson. “Now presumably, that hyperdrive is exerting a force forward, pushing it forward, so there’s a thrust force and a resistance force from the Supremacy. I would guess, based off of the way that it is depicted, that the Raddus is essentially at light speed by the time it makes contact. At that point, there’s only slowing down: Laws of physics dictate that you can’t go faster than the speed of light.” Of course, he notes, the hyperdrive adds a little asterisk: Maybe you can go faster than the speed of light.

Regardless of what speed the Raddus is traveling at when it collides with the Supremacy, Johnson says all of the energy the smaller ship carries with it is spent in cutting through the Supremacy — and some smaller star destroyers — and in completely demolishing the Raddus.

star wars cockpit hyperspace

Part of judging whether Vice Admiral Holdo's gambit is credible depends on how we define hyperspace.

Of course, this is all moot if hyperspace travel means the Raddus would have been in another dimension altogether — which some works in the Star Wars Expanded Universe (now “Legends”) seem to confirm. As Inverse has previously reported, hyperspace travel seems to incorporate some elements of string theory. But ships in the Star Wars universe still need to accelerate beyond light speed to enter hyperspace.

For our purposes, let’s assume the Raddus is traveling at or beyond the speed of light. Leia calls hyperdrive “lightspeed” in The Empire Strikes Back, so that’s good enough for us. With that in mind, it seems most likely that a starship accelerating into hyperspace is going at the speed of light but is also still present in the same physical dimension as everything else around it. And even if it’s not, it’s still in the same physical dimension as other space when it comes out of lightspeed.

We have evidence of this in Star Wars: A New Hope, in which Han Solo brings the Millennium Falcon out of hyperspace right in the middle of the field of debris that used to be Alderaan. Since the ship didn’t hit any of the rocks until it came out of hyperspace, this suggests that a ship is susceptible to colliding with objects in physical space once it decelerates out of hyperspace, which also suggests that a ship could still collide with something while it’s accelerating into hyperspace.

To put it simply, Holdo does on purpose what Han Solo did by accident.

“If that’s the way you go to hyperspace, it’s perfectly accurate,” says Johnson.

Jorge Ballester, on the other hand, is not totally sure that the Raddus is tall enough to make it all the way through the Supremacy. Ballester, physics department head at Emporia State University in Kansas, points out that the Raddus is about 1,500 feet tall, while the Supremacy is over 13,000 feet tall.

“The widest part of the Raddus is about one-sixth of the height of the Supremacy,” he tells Inverse. “So I don’t know how the Raddus could extend its interaction out far enough to slice through.” To put it another way, you probably couldn’t use a single pebble to split an entire boulder, since the force wouldn’t spread far enough above and below, even if the pebble had enough force to pass all the way from front to back. He also points out an issue that arises as a result of Newton’s third law.

“I don’t know why the Raddus wouldn’t be completely destroyed after penetrating one or two of its own length into the Supremacy,” says Ballester. “Presumably both sides use roughly similar materials and technologies to build their ships. Similarly, I would not expect a bullet made of wood to penetrate deeply into a wooden block because the bullet itself would be destroyed. The block might explode but I would not expect the wooden bullet to rip through making a narrow hole.”

bullet impact

Would the Raddus go through the Supremacy? Or simply explode after penetrating a couple ship lengths? It's hard to say for sure.

These points certainly shed some doubt on whether this collison could go down the way it did in the film, if we’re judging based on our universe’s laws of physics.

Whether or not the Raddus could make it all the way through the Supremacy, it’s worth taking a second to consider the passage of time as it’s depicted in The Last Jedi. There’s a cinematic effect to slowing down the action right as the ships collide so the audience can experience the emotional weight of the moment.

Leia: "Don't forge the secret plan. Drop out of hyperspace right on their faces. Got it? Nod sternly if you understand me."

And while an observer in the Star Wars universe would see the events unfold at full speed, “from her perspective, time would actually slow down for her compared to everybody else because she is traveling super fast,” says Johnson.

So to sum up: Though there are some variables we simply can’t calculate, such as how ship shields interact in the event of a crash, Vice Admiral Holdo’s gambit to save her people is pretty plausible. And, damn, it looks so good.

UFO aliens Pentagon: Latest on more sightings

An increased number of reports have been seen in recent years
UFO, Aliens, Pentagon
More and more UFO videos have been reported in recent years.
YouTube

Last week it was finally revealed that the Pentagon has done extensive research on UFOs and aliens under the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program. The program is said to remain active but funding has dried up.

Maybe there just isn’t enough new video evidence of the potential existence of alien life and the UFO videos have dried up. In this age of cell phone video, three or four should be popping up on YouTube every day, right?

All we got last week was a less than impressive video from 2004. But this isn't to say UFO sightings are down in recent years. Quite the contrary. An approximate 45,000 sightings from around the United States were recorded in 2016 alone – a figure that is up significantly from years past.

Here are some of the more staggering UFO videos in recent years.

What the New York Times UFO Report Actually Reveals

What the New York Times UFO Report Actually Reveals

By

A photo of a UFO spotted spotted on October 16, 1957, near Holloman Air Force Missile Development Center in New Mexico, which was released by the Aerial Phenomena Research Organization.  Photo: Bettmann/Bettmann Archive

The internet went slightly more bananas than usual last weekend over the New York Times’ story implying that extraterrestrials are real and the U.S. government has been tracking them for years. Appearing first on the web on Saturday, it came out in print on Sunday as a front-page story entitled “Real U.F.O.s? Pentagon Unit Tried to Know.” As if wary of the waters into which it was about to wade, the piece started out in a sober and measured tone, describing the existence of a heretofore little-known Department of Defense program, but then after the jump to page 27 loosened up and gave free rein to claims that the program had found evidence of strange aircraft that flew in seemingly impossible ways.

For Ufologists who had dreamed of being taken seriously by the mainstream media, the story was a dream come true. As BigThink.com put it, “The article is shocking, and arguably represents a historical inflection point in our attitudes regarding UFOs.” Twitter user Space Traveller wrote: “How is everyone not losing it over this Pentagon #UFO report and footage?!” Even inveterate bubble-burster Neil deGrasse Tyson accepted that something was out there, reminding CNN viewers that just because an object was unidentified didn’t necessarily mean it came from outer space.

The tl;dr appeared to be “flying saucers are real.” But a closer reading suggests a murkier proposition.

The main source in the Times article was a former Pentagon employee named Luis Elizondo, who ran a small program called Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification from 2007 until it was shut down in 2012. What made the story Times-worthy was the fact that Elizondo’s account was vouched for by the man who’d arranged for its funding, former Senate majority leader Harry Reid, as well as by the billionaire donor who won the contract to manage the program, Robert Bigelow. (Fox News justifiably raised an eyebrow at the men’s lucrative interconnection.)

The fact that the program really existed was the part that the Timestouted as its big get, but that wasn’t what set the internet on fire. What got people excited was the implication that the program had collected evidence of encounters with unidentified flying objects. In reporting this part of the story, reporters Helene Cooper, Ralph Blumenthal, and Leslie Kean were much less careful about maintaining a critical eye. “The program produced documents that describe sightings of aircraft that seemed to move at very high velocities with no visible signs of propulsion, or that hovered with no apparent means of lift,” the article asserted, later adding: “The company modified buildings in Las Vegas for the storage of metal alloys and other materials that Mr. Elizondo and program contractors said had been recovered from unidentified aerial phenomena. In addition, researchers also studied people who said that they had experienced physical effects from encounters with the objects and examined them for physiological changes.”

The straightforward presentation of these assertions implies that the authors believe them to be true. But they beg for elaboration. Were the produced documents credible? In what way were the buildings modified, and why was it necessary to modify them in order to store this material? What does it mean for an object to be associated with a phenomenon? What were the claimed physical effects, and were any physiological changes found?

Making portentous assertions out of context is a powerful technique for creating a sense of mystery and drama. Leaving a question unanswered implies that it is unanswerable. Selectively omitting key details can make a mundane fact seem uncanny. These techniques are great for exciting an audience, but they’re better suited to Ancient Aliens than the pages of the New York Times because the net effect is to cloud rather than illuminate key issues. In this case: What exactly did Elizondo’s team uncover?

The main article is decidedly short on specifics. There’s a brief reference to “footage from a Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet showing an aircraft surrounded by some kind of glowing aura traveling at high speed and rotating as it moves.” A more detailed account is provided in an accompanying sidebar entitled “2 Navy Airmen and an Object That ‘Accelerated Like Nothing I’ve Ever Seen.’” In it, former Navy F/A-18 pilot David Fravor relates his experience during a flight from the aircraft carrier Nimitz on November 14, 2004. While en route to a training mission he was vectored toward an unknown radar contact. Arriving on the scene, he witnessed a lozenge-shaped craft that moved over an agitated, churning patch of ocean, then moved so quickly that it appeared to defy physics.

Embedded in the sidebar is a 76-second-long video that is described as having been taken during the 2004 encounter. It shows a fuzzy dot in the center of an infrared-camera monitor that, when zoomed in on, appears lozenge-shaped. There are no visual clues such as clouds or sea, so it is impossible to gauge distance or relative motion. Near the end, the object ducks away to the left. There is nothing about the video that in itself reads as being beyond the realm of normal physics, though it seems eerie given the article’s content.

As UFO sightings go, Fravor’s account ranks as fairly credible. It’s detailed, internally consistent, and is provided by an unusually well-credentialed subject. Not only was Fravor a Navy pilot, he was a cast member of the ten-part documentary series Carrier about life on the USS Nimitz that aired on PBS in 2008.

Neither the story nor the video are new, however. Both have been kicking around the internet for some time. Fravor’s tale first appeared in March, 2015, on the website FighterSweep.com, where writer Paco Chierici presented a detailed story as told to him by “a good buddy of mine and former squadron mate, Dave ‘Sex’ Fravor.” Chierici advises that it’s “one of the most bizarre aviation stories of all time … a story that stretches credibility.”

In a follow-up story for the Times Insider about how the story came to be, reporter Ralph Blumenthal makes it sound like the Times scored an exclusive by getting Elizondo to open up to them, writing that he and two colleagues “met Mr. Elizondo in a nondescript Washington hotel where he sat with his back to the wall, keeping an eye on the door.” The implication is that Elizondo feared the repercussions of leaking sensitive information for the first time.

In fact, when Elizondo spoke to the Times he had left government and was promoting the launch of a new venture called To the Stars … Academy of Arts & Science, a website that is trying to crowdsource donations to study paranormal phenomena. Before the Times told his story, To the Stars’ main shareholder, former Blink-182 guitarist Tom DeLonge, had previously promoted the venture on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast.

And what, exactly, did Elizondo uncover during his five years heading a semi-secret arm of the Pentagon investigating possible extraterrestrial visitations? A visit to the venture’s website raises doubts. A video with the title “2004 USS NIMITZ FLIR1 VIDEO” is the same video seen on the Times’ website, with the addition of a detailed technical description of the infrared-imaging system that took it, along with the claim that “this footage comes with crucial chain-of-custody (CoC) documentation because it is a product of U.S. military sensors, which confirms it is original, unaltered, and not computer generated or artificially fabricated.” But no such documentation is provided.

The description links to a separate page entitled “2004 USS NIMITZ PILOT REPORT.” This is a truly curious document that retells Fravor’s story in the form of a military-style briefing, with his name replaced by the word “Source,” allegedly “to protect sources and methods.” Sections of it have been blacked out, as if by a military censor, though the given date of September 7, 2017, was some 13 years after the event and 5 years after the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification had been shut down. Curiously, the file flubs some well-known aviation technology, such as equating “UAS” with “Unidentified Aerial System.” (It commonly refers to “Unmanned Aircraft System,” or drone.)

It seems that To the Stars is trying to shroud Fravor’s account in a spooky fog of faux top-secrecy. This is a dicey strategy given Fravor’s prominence in online UFO circles, and gives the impression that Elizondo’s company is repackaging timeworn tales from the internet as freshly revealed government X-files. And, by extension, calls into question the Times’ wisdom in taking his claims about extraterrestrial encounters at face value.

UFOS AND THE PENTAGON: Mystery craft ‘tailed USAF plane half way across Atlantic’

UFOS AND THE PENTAGON: Mystery craft ‘tailed USAF plane half way across Atlantic’

EXCLUSIVE: A US Air Force man has come forward with details of a bizarre UFO encounter in the wake of the exposure of the secret Pentagon UFO investigations.

UFO-Navy

YouTube

The witness came forward 37 years later after it emerged the UG Government was examining UFOs.

The loadmaster, who has yet to be named, has broken a 37-year silence about the encounter that he failed to report at the time in December 1980 for fear of ruining his career.

However, the man reported the unexplained case to the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) yesterday, just days after there were headlines across the globe revealing details about a top secret US Department of Defense five-year probe into the threat posed by UFOs.

Details of the Department of Defense Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification £16.5million secretive programme were exposed after the US Government claimed for years it had not interest in UFOs, something conspiracy theorists refused to believe.

US-based MUFON is the world’s largest organisation dedicated to UFO and alien research, and keeps a global database of UFO sightings and reports.

Loadmasters are responsible for getting cargo and personnel onto a plane.

In a report to MUFON the man explained he failed to officially report the sighting for fear of affecting his career, due to the perceived ridicule surrounding UFO sightings.

He said: “I was a loadmaster on an C-141 transport aircraft we took off from Charleston Air Force base Going to Dover Air Force base, Delaware, when we pick up an object on radar.

“The object was pacing our aircraft. We reported the incident to the tower they also saw the object, but said we may have a problem with our radar.

“Once we landed at Dover the technicians checked out the radar on the aircraft and found no problems.”

He said the plane then set off again from Dover towards Ireland.

The loadmaster said: “Half way across the Atlantic Ocean the object returned and continue to paced us the rest of the way across the ocean.

“We once again contacted the tower to report the incident and the tower confirmed that they also had the object on radar.

“At this, we were asked if the crew wanted to file a UFO report.

“We discussed it as a crew and decided it would be bad for our careers so no report was filed.”

MUFON is investigating the case, but cautions that most sightings can be explained.

The man joins a growing number of military and airline witnesses to come forward with details of seemingly inexplicable UFO encounters.

These include Cmdr David Fravor, a former US navy pilot, who was one of two men who filmed on radar cameras a shocking UFO encounter off the coast of San Diego that was looked at by the Department of Defense probe, with no explanation coming forward.

Bombshell video of what Mr Fravor and Cmdr Jim Slaight saw was released with the recent revelations.

Mr Fravor said they encountered the oval shaped white UFO “which defied physics” at the end of a two-week period when the US Princeton ship had been tracking mysterious aircraft that appeared suddenly at 80,000 feet, before shooting down towards the ocean.

They stopped at 20,000 feet and appeared to hover, before dropping off range or heading back upwards.

Is Noah's Ark buried on a Turkish mountain? Experts claim they have 'new evidence' that suggests the Biblical ship ended up on Mount Ararat

Is Noah's Ark buried on a Turkish mountain? Experts claim they have 'new evidence' that suggests the Biblical ship ended up on Mount Ararat

  • In Genesis 8:4, it claims the Ark settled on 'mountains of Ararat' after 150 days
  • Professor Raul Esperante from the Geoscience Research Institute says he is convinced the vessel's remains are there
  • This controversial institute is sponsored by the Seventh-day Adventist Church
  • He is part of a symposium on Mount Ararat and Noah's Ark in Ağrı in Turkey
  • In 2010, a group of evangelical Christian explorers claimed to have found traces
  • Their research was widely dismissed by experts who said it lacked real evidence
  • Nicholas Purcell from Oxford University told MailOnline claims were 'nonsense'

Noah's Ark could soon be found, if one group of explorers is to be believed.

In the Bible it is claimed the ark settled on the 'mountains of Ararat' in Turkey after 150 days.

In 2010, a group of evangelical Christian explorers claimed to have found traces of the biblical ship on the mountain.

But their research was widely dismissed by experts who said it lacked real evidence.

Now a California-based 'ark hunter' believes there is new evidence Mount Ararat is where the ark and its inhabitants came aground - and the new claims have received similar reception from the scientific community.

Previous research has claimed to have found traces of the biblical ship on the mountain, and now a US researcher has says he is convinced the vessel's remains is there (artist's impression)

MOUNT ARARAT

Many believe that Turkey's Mount Ararat, the region's highest point, is where the Noah's Ark and its inhabitants came aground thousands of years ago.

In 2010, a group of Chinese and Turkish evangelical explorers set out on an expedition to explore the region and find the vessel's remains.

After a few weeks, they claimed to have found wooden specimens from an ark-like structure 4,000m (13,000 ft) up the mountain.

The team claimed they carried out carbon dating on the wood, which proved it was 4,800 years old, around the time the Ark is said to have been afloat.

Although considered a historical event, most scholars and archaeologists do not believe in a literal interpretation of the Ark story.

Nicholas Purcell, a lecturer in ancient history at Oxford University told MailOnline the claims were the 'usual nonsense'.

'If floodwaters covered Eurasia 12,000ft [3,700 metres] deep in 2,800BC, how did the complex societies of Egypt and Mesopotamia, already many centuries old, keep right on regardless?'

Talking back in 2010 when the claims were first made, Mike Pitt, a British archaeologist, said the evangelical explorers had yet to produce compelling evidence.

He said: 'If there had been a flood capable of lifting a huge ship 2.5 miles [4km] up the side of a mountain 4,800 years ago, I think there would be substantial geological evidence for this flood around the world. And there isn't.'

More than 100 researchers from around the world recenlty came together as part of a three-day international symposium on Mount Ararat and Noah's Ark in Ağrı in Turkey to see if they can find the ark's final resting place.

'My purpose is to visit the sites around the mountain to find clues about catastrophic events in the past', said Professor Raul Esperante from the Geoscience Research Institute.

The Geoscience Research Institute is sponsored by the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

On their website it states their mission is to 'discover and share an understanding of nature and its relationship with the Biblical revelation of the Creator God'.

In 2010, a group of Chinese and Turkish evangelical explorers set out on an expedition to explore the region and find the vessel's remains.

After a few weeks, they claimed to have found wooden specimens from an ark-like structure 4,000m (13,000 ft) up the mountain.

The mountain is the highest peak in Turkey, standing more than 5,100 metres (16,500 ft) tall.

The team claimed they carried out carbon dating on the wood, which proved it was 4,800 years old, around the time the Ark is said to have been afloat.

The vessel was said to measure '300 cubits, by 50 cubits, by 30 cubits', which translates to up to 515ft long, 86ft wide and 52ft high.

Professor Esperante is convinced this is true and requires more 'rigorous, serious scientific work' in the area, writes the Express.

He has urged for international investment into a full investigation.

'The result of my findings will be published in books, publications and journals, but at this point it is too early to know what we are going to find', said Professor Esperante.

'Once the scientific community knows about the existence of Noah's Ark in Mount Ararat, we can make it available to the general public.'

Another expert says that Mount Ararat can't be the location of the ark because the mountain did not form until after the flood waters receded

In the Bible, God commands Noah to build a vast ship, the ark - capable of saving himself, his family and a representation of the world's animals.

God was spurred by the wickedness and corruption of man, vows to send a great cleansing flood.

Deeming Noah to be the only righteous man worth saving, God commands him to build a vast ship.

According to the Bible, when Noah has completed his task, and God has sent 'two of every sort' of animal to the Ark, the flood waters rise until all mountains are covered and life (except fish) is destroyed.

In 2010, a group of Chinese and Turkish evangelical explorers set out on an expedition to explore the region and find the vessel's remains. They claimed to have found wooden specimens (pictured) from an ark-like structure 4,000m (13,000 ft) up the mountain

'Noah's Ark, the Flood is not a myth but a real incident mentioned in all holy books', said Dr Oktay Belli from Istanbul University.

However, Dr Andrew Snelling young-Earth creationist with a Phd from the University of Sydney says that Mount Ararat can't be the location of the ark because the mountain did not form until after the flood waters receded.

Although considered a historical event, most scholars and archaeologists do not believe in a literal interpretation of the Ark story.

THE STORY OF NOAH'S ARK

In the Bible, the story of Noah's Ark appears in chapters six to nine of the Book of Genesis.

It tells how God, spurred by the wickedness and corruption of man, vows to send a great cleansing flood.

Deeming Noah to be the only righteous man worth saving, God commands him to build a vast ship, the ark - capable of saving himself, his family and two of each of the world's animals.

When Noah completes his build, God sends 'two of every sort' of animal to the Ark before flood waters rise until all mountains are covered.

In the Bible, the story of Noah's Ark appears in chapters six to nine of the Book of Genesis. It tells how God, spurred by the wickedness and corruption of man, vows to send a great cleansing flood

The vessel is said to measure '300 cubits, by 50 cubits, by 30 cubits', which translates to up to 515ft (155m) long, 86ft (26m) wide and 52ft (16m) high.

All life non-aquatic life is destroyed in the ensuing global disaster.

When the flood subsides, the animals leave the Ark and God vows to never again send a flood to destroy man.

Many believe that Turkey's Mount Ararat, the highest point in the region, is where the ark and its inhabitants came aground.

Although considered a historical event, most scholars and archaeologists do not believe in a literal interpretation of the Ark story.

Guillermo del Toro Saw a UFO and Thought it Looked “Crappy”

Guillermo del Toro Saw a UFO and Thought it Looked “Crappy”

Tom DeLonge has spoiled UFOs for his peers. It’s no longer enough for celebrities to see unidentified flying objects – not hey have to see something that’s better that anything Tom and his friends in the government and at the To the Stars Academy of Arts & Science have released on video. Need proof? Film director Guillermo del Toro, who is riding a popularity wave after the recent success of The Shape of Water, claims he saw a UFO when he was younger and hated its looks. Only in Hollywood do you hear things like this:

“You sound like a complete lunatic, but I saw a UFO. I didn’t want to see a UFO. It was horribly designed. And it went from there to here—like 1,000 meters away—in less than a second and it was so crappy.”

Guillermo del Toro

Poor Guillermo. He told the Hollywood Reporter he and a friend were looking at the stars and drinking beer (what a shock) while parked on the side of a freeway outside of Guadalajara in a place called Cerro del Cuatro (Mountain of the Four) when he saw a light on the horizon traveling “super-fast.” So the quick-thinking Guillermo put down his beer and gave his friend instructions.

“And I said, ‘Honk and flash the lights.’ And we started honking.”

No wonder they attracted an ugly UFO and not a starship.

“It was a flying saucer. So clichéd, with lights going like this. It’s so sad.”

No, Guillermo. What’s sad is that you tapped into your inner critic rather than your inner filmmaker and didn’t have a camera or a cell phone to record it. What would Peter Jackson have done? What would Steven Spielberg have done? Those aliens could have been coming to open a whole new market for you and you knock their ride. It gets worse.

“We jumped in the car, drove really fast. I kept looking. It was following us. And then I looked back and it was gone. So, you know, judge me. I have no implant.”

Or maybe you do? How else can you explain how one goes from drinking beer and honking your horn at flying saucers to making movies like The Devil’s Backbone, Pan’s Labyrinth, Blade II, Hellboy and Pacific Rim?

Crappy? Weren’t you driving a rusty Hyundai?

Then he tries to cover it up by saying he panicked.

“Seriously, like I have never been that scared ever in my life. I wish I could reveal they’re not what you think they are. They are what you think they are. And the fear we felt was so primal.”

What a cop-out, Guillermo. You get no sympathy here. That “crappy” flying saucer scared the crap out of you?

What would Ton DeLonge say?

Scientists Weigh In On ‘Alien Alloys’ Stored in Las Vegas Hangars

Scientists Weigh In On ‘Alien Alloys’ Stored in Las Vegas Hangars

UFO watchers and truth-seekers everywhere got an early Xmas present this year when The New York Times reported on a secret $22 million Pentagon program known as the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program. This program, the NYT article claims, investigated reports of unidentified flying objects and analyzed artifacts and debris allegedly gathered from crashed alien craft. Many of the article’s claims should sound familiar to the world of UFO research – black money, reverse-engineered alien technology, classified military reports, etc. – but one detail jumped out: according the report, the Department of Defense has a collection of “alien alloys” and other materials stored in a hangar in Las Vegas which defy scientific explanation.

Similar claims of hidden mystery metals were made after the Roswell Incident.

Similar claims of alien mystery metals were made after the Roswell Incident.

One of the authors of the NYT article, Ralph Blumenthal, told an MSNBC interviewer that these materials are unlike anything found on Earth:

They have, as we reported in the paper, some material from these objects that is being studied so that scientists can find what accounts for their amazing properties, this technology of these objects, whatever they are. They’re studying it, but it’s some kind of compound that they don’t recognize.

Claims of strange and amazing alien metals are nothing new, found in other UFO cases such as in the mysterious “memory metal” found after the Roswell incident – and throughout science fiction, of course. After these most recent claims received such widespread coverage, scientists around the world weighed in to share their thoughts on these so-called “alien alloys.” According to several chemists, the existence of such an unknown material is impossible. Oregon State University chemist May Nyman, told LiveScience that thanks to X-ray diffraction, the crystalline structure of any metal alloy can quickly be identified:

These are all very standard techniques in research labs, so if we had such mysterious metals, you could take it to any university where research is done, and they could tell you what are the elements and something about the crystalline phase within a few hours.

Richard Sachleben, a retired chemist and member of the American Chemical Society, says it’s “quite impossible” that there are alloys we can’t identify:

There’s not as many mysteries in science as people like to think. It’s not like we know everything — we don’t know everything. But most things we know enough about to know what we don’t know.

While I’m sure thats true enough of everything we’ve found on our planet, I just have to wonder: given the vastness of the universe, is it actually impossible for unknown elements or alloys to exist? Seven new elements have been discovered here on Earth in the last thirty years, while the majority have been discovered in the last four hundred. On a long enough timeline, who knows what tomorrow’s science will uncover?

In some ways, then, the sounds of the Big Bang are still being heard.

I mean, there’s gotta be something out there we don’t yet know about, right?.

Furthermore, if (and that’s a big IF) an alien civilization does have the capability to construct spacecraft which can reach Earth, who knows what type of materials engineering capabilities they might have? Sure, these claims of alien alloys might not be entirely true according to our known science, but let’s point out the real issue here: what more is it going to take to get a serious conversation going about government disclosure of alien life? If a New York Times report with significant admissions from on-the-record officials isn’t enough, I don’t know what is.

M.I.B.: More On Camera-Based Curiosities

M.I.B.: More On Camera-Based Curiosities

In a recent article here at Mysterious Universe, Brent Swancer addressed the issue of the Men in Black caught on film – whether in photographs or footage. Brent states in his article: “Nick Redfern has covered in far more detail than I intend to go into here. However, what has always intrigued me are the times when these frightening and creepy specters have actually been allegedly photographed or even filmed, and there are actually a few cases where this has allegedly happened. This is what I plan to delve into here, so let’s take a look.”

You can find Brent’s article at this link.

Reading Brent’s article brought to mind something that ties in with what he was saying, but from the exact opposite angle. I’ll explain what I mean by that. Brent focused on cases when and where the MIB were captured on film. There are, however, certain incidents in which the MIB should have appeared on photos but didn’t. A perfect example is that of Graham Elliott, a man I met in 1998, at the annual, Leeds, England-based conference of the now-defunct UFO Magazine. Elliott was a postman who had a strange story to tell. In late November 1996, and in the early hours of the morning, he had a very strange dream. According to Elliott, he underwent what can only be termed a classic “alien abduction” experience. Elliott was significantly traumatized by the whole thing, particularly the graphic and realistic nature of what he hoped was a nightmare but which may have been something more.

Elliott told me that two days after the encounter something strange happened: he had the day off work and was planning on sweeping the front yard clear of leaves. He opened the front-door and was confronted by the sight of an old 1960s-era Jaguar car, totally black in color. It was parked outside his house with no sign of its driver. Elliott didn’t think much of it, aside from the fact that it was a cool-looking car. He went inside the house to tell his wife to come and have a look at the car. When they got to the window, however, the “Car in Black” was gone. The next night, around 7:00 p.m. Elliott felt compelled to go to the window and look outside. There was the car; the very same one. There was one big difference: this time there was someone sitting in the car, although they couldn’t make out much more than that, due to the darkness and the small amount of illumination from the streetlights. This time, Elliott found the whole thing very odd. In seconds, the driver hit the road.

jaguar-570x320.jpg

On the following Sunday afternoon, the car was back again. By now concerned rather than puzzled, Elliott grabbed his camera, opened the front-door and took a photo of the car “just to let [the driver] know.” In seconds, the man behind the wheel turned on the engine and drove off. The man was not seen again, and neither was the car. But, there was one very odd thing: when Elliott finally finished the 35mm roll of film and had it developed at a local store, the car was completely absent from the photo. It was, Elliott said to me, as if he had “just taken a picture of the street.” Tales of strange cars and the MIB abound, as this link shows. Moving on…

Denise Stoner is a woman with a notable background: she is the Director of the Florida Research Group affiliation of UFORCOP, a Mutual UFO Network National Abduction Research Team (ART) member, a Florida MUFON Field Investigator, a Star Team Member, and a former Florida MUFON, State Section Director, and Chief Investigator. She co-authored with Kathleen Marden The Alien Abduction Files, in 2013. Denise has an odd tale to tell that falls into this particular category of weirdness. In 2014, Denise had several eerie experiences that involved not just the MIB, but also the Women in Black.

She told me how it all went down: “Three feet from the front door to the right we have a monitor with microphone that shows us in color what/who may be at the door and what cars are parked directly in front of our home and the home to our left. A huge double wide window is next further right with wooden blinds closed most of the time. We live on one end of a T-shaped court – ours being the top of the T on the left side, once you turn the T upside down.

“Our dog sleeps in bed with us and this particular morning he did not wake up or move; my husband and I did not wake up. The doorbell was ringing and ringing and ringing like someone was playing a trick – a child, perhaps, and was going to run away when the door was answered. The strange thing was the fact that our dog did not bark and he should have at the first ring to warn us. I never heard it, my husband, who is a Vietnam Vet, never heard it. Our master- bedroom is just left of the front door and we hear everything. Our daughter called to us and said ‘Mom, you better come out here, there are two ladies with black clothes ringing the door bell and won’t stop.’ I jumped out of bed, now hearing the incessant ding-dong and beginning to figure one of our neighbors had an emergency. We all know each other and each one is willing to help out.

black-car-570x380.jpg

“I was no more than three or four seconds getting to the front door, my eyes already focusing on the monitor. There stood a woman who, to me resembled a person of Native American ethnic group, if I were to guess. She had shoulder length black hair with bangs, slightly tanned yet doughy looking skin, and dark, large black eyes looking straight into the camera. I could see that she had on a black jumper style dress with thinner than normal straps running over her shoulders to the bib portion of the dress – almost suspenders minus the clips. She had on a long sleeved under blouse in a dark shade of grey.

“Standing next to her was another woman identical to her in description only shorter in stature by a head. The height was difficult to judge due to the monitor, but she was not as tall as the lower portion of the camera, so I would say one was just over five-feet and the other just over four. I unlocked the door and swung it open only to discover there was no one there. Not a soul. I glanced down only seconds, just long enough to check the lock. My eyes were no longer on the monitor but the door and then the porch. Again, a matter of seconds. I am now looking at an empty porch, the house next door, an empty parking lot (I can identify all my neighbors’ cars), grass walk-through on the left and right, and a sidewalk to the street straight ahead between two homes. There is no way possible these two women could get to any of these described places in the time I opened my front door.”

Denise’s case is somewhat different to that of Graham Elliott, in the sense that Denise could see the two Women in Black on the camera’s monitor, but they couldn’t be seen in-person.

And, finally, there’s the case of a young man named Jordan, who lives in Edinburg, Texas. He contacted me in January 2017, after reading my Women in Black book. Jordan claimed to have photographed two MIB lurking on his family’s property in the summer of 2016, a few days after he saw a strange green light – roughly around the size of a basketball – hovering over the front-yard on what was a warm, clear and bright early evening. The “ball of energy” was only in sight for a few seconds, after which it simply vanished.

As for the pair of MIB that Jordan photographed, well, here’s the problem: Jordan sent me the photo and, yes, it does show the driveway and the front-yard, but the MIB are absent. Of course, trying to prove that the photo is of some significance is extremely difficult. Impossible, in fact. Of course, the skeptic would likely say that Jordan had taken a shot of the front-yard at night and then conjured up a story to support his claims. But, I had the chance to meet Jordan a couple of months later, when I spoke at Edinburg’s annual “Out Of This World Festival.” He came across genuinely puzzled and certainly not someone looking for anything at all in the way of publicity.

I have several other cases along these lines in my files, but by now you get the picture. Add them to the photo angle described by Brent Swancer in his article, and what we have is evidence of something very strange when it comes to the MIB and cameras. Something very strange, indeed.

Russia is Planning a Luxury Hotel on the Space Station

Now that everyone is talking out in the open about UFOs, including the US government and military, it will only be a matter of time before outer-space hotels start opening up to cater to tourist who want to see the unidentified objects from a better vantage point than their backyards. How much time? Try right now. The Russian space agency Roscosmos announced it is planning to install a luxury hotel module on the International Space Station to cater to space tourists. Will the Russian ISS hotel minibar be stocked with vodka and Tang?

The news about this planned Red Roof-of-the-Atmosphere Inn comes from Popular Mechanics magazine (motto: Grease is our favorite scent), which revealed this week that it somehow obtained access to a proposal by Roscosmos State Corporation, the government body overseeing the country’s space program, to add a 20-ton, 15.5-meter (51 feet)-long module to the ISS whose sole purpose would be to cater to space travelers. The 92 cubic meter (3249 cubic feet) will be designed to give four visitors their own 2 cubic meter (70 cubic foot) bedroom and one-half of a 2 cubic meter “hygiene and medical” station (bathroom). This orbiting B&B will also have a common area for lounging with fellow tourists, WiFi and exercise equipment (zero-gravity weightlifting anyone?).

What about UFO spotting opportunities? For those on the standard package, each sleeping room will have a 9-inch (228 mm) porthole (think airplane window) while the communal lounge will have a 16-inch (426 mm) window (think small manhole cover) for four people to push and shove their way in front of for a better view. However, those who upgrade to the luxury package will get guided spacewalks accompanied by their own personal cosmonaut, who will point out the sights and say, “Look, there’s your house!” when the tourist starts to ask too many questions about strange objects whizzing by.

How much would you pay for a luxurious one-week-to-one-month stay at the ISS? If you have to ask the price, you probably can’t afford the $40 million minimum and the $4 million down payment so RKK Energia, Russia’s primary space contractor, can begin working on the space hotel. This is the same group that ran Russia’s original space tourism program which sent 7 space tourists to the ISS between 2001 and 2009, starting with American multimillionaire Dennis Tito, who paid $20 million for an 8-day stay. RKK Energia estimates it will take 5 years and 16.4 to 26.2 billion rubles ($279-$446 million) to complete its new outer-space place, so it’s looking to sign up as many people as it can for this out-of-this-world timeshare deal. They will probably be pushing the luxury package — which includes spacewalks but requires a month-long stay, for just $20 million more.

Worth $20 million?

Five years to build means the Motel ISS won’t be ready until 2022. It also means that reservations will be limited, since the US and Russia have agreed to retire the ISS in 2028. there’s no guarantee RKK Energia will be able to raise the funds or meet the deadlines without delays, cost run-ups or problems, so it might be wise to cover your space travel bets by placing a another deposit (if you can afford $40 million, you can afford a few million more) with Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin program, which launched a space dummy on December 12th in a test of its planned suborbital tourism program, or with Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic,  }is projecting suborbital launches in 2018.

However, your chances of seeing a UFO are much better on a month-long trip orbiting 250 miles in space without worrying about NASA cutting the video feed on your window.

All it takes is money and patience.

Space War? After SpaceX the launch of a Topol/SS-25 Missile is causing a Sky Spectacle!

Space War? After SpaceX the launch of a Topol/SS-25 Missile is causing a Sky Spectacle!

On December 26, 2017 the Strategic Rocket Forces conducted a successful launch of a Topol/SS-25 missile from the Kapustin Yar test site. The test was used "to collect experimental data that will be used to develop advanced missile defense countermeasures."

The launch of the Topol/SS-25 missile during the night gave an amazing light show, similar to the SpaceX rocket and was even visible in Austria and captured by Gerald Reczek who posted the images on his Facebook page.

Coincidence or not but the launch comes several days after the launch of the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying “Satellites”.

Despite the amazing sky phenomena caused by this kind of rocket/missile launches, we may wonder whether there is something going on in space or not.

Will the next UFO disclosure be

Will the next UFO disclosure be "biological threats from outer space?"

From youtube.com: Truth About Aliens! {MID-216974}
Truth About Aliens!

(UFO archive, here)

That may sound like a misguided question. But let's look at Tom DeLonge's company, currently acting as a conduit for new UFO revelations.

DeLonge (twitter), a famous musician (Blink-182, Angels and Airwaves) has surrounded himself with high-level spooks from the CIA and the military, in his new venture, To The Stars Academy (twitter).

One of his lead collaborators is Luis Elizondo, who was the Pentagon chief of a secret program (2007-2012) to study and explore UFO activity. Elizondo is now the point man for media, explaining the breaking news about a 2004 US military sighting of a UFO, and subsequent failed attempts to analyze materials from UFOs. He's also hinting that alien UFOs are a potential threat to our safety, a threat we can't ignore.

Every major press outlet in the world, starting with the NY Times, is covering this story.

Who are the players on De Longe's team?

Buckle up. The following quotes are from the Academy's site:

Jim Semivan -- "Mr. Semivan retired from the Central Intelligence Agency's Directorate of Operations after 25 years as an operations officer, both overseas and domestically."

Hal Puthoff -- "Dr. Puthoff's professional background spans more than five decades of research at General Electric, Sperry, the National Security Agency (NSA), Stanford University and SRI International. Dr. Puthoff regularly advises NASA, the Department of Defense and intelligence communities..."

Luis Elizondo -- "Luis Elizondo is a career intelligence officer whose experience includes working with the U.S. Army, the Department of Defense, the National Counterintelligence Executive, and the Director of National Intelligence. As a former Special Agent In-Charge, Luis conducted and supervised highly sensitive espionage and terrorism investigations around the world. As an intelligence Case Officer, he ran clandestine source operations throughout Latin America and the Middle East."

Chris Mellon -- "He served 20 years in the federal government, including as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Intelligence in the Clinton and Bush Administrations."

Paul Rapp -- "His past honors include a Certificate of Commendation from the Central Intelligence Agency for 'significant contributions to the mission of the Office of Research and Development'." (Note: This office, ORD, was where the CIA's MK ULTRA mind control program secretly landed, in 1962, after it purportedly ended.)

Norm Kahn -- "Dr. Kahn had over a 30-year career with the Central Intelligence Agency..."

That's quite a roll call of military and intelligence insiders. Did DeLonge recruit them, or did they covertly recruit him, viewing him as a sincere, but rather clueless front man they could use for their own purposes?

But let's go one layer deeper with a few of these names on Tom DeLonge's team at the To the Stars Academy.

Dr. Norm Kahn's career with the CIA "culminat[ed] in his development and direction of the Intelligence Community's Counter-Biological Weapons Program."

Dr. Rapp "is a Professor of Military and Emergency Medicine at the Uniformed Services University."

Dr. Garry Nolan, another Academy adviser, "is the Rachford and Carlota A. Harris Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Stanford University School of Medicine...He holds a B.S. in genetics from Cornell University, a Ph.D. in genetics from Stanford University.

Luis Elizondo's "academic background includes Microbiology, Immunology and Parasitology, with research experience in tropical diseases."

And finally, another Academy team member, Dr. Adele Gilpin, "is a scientist with biomedical academic and research experience as well as an active, licensed, attorney."

Why are all these medical people on board, along with intelligence and military players? Microbiology, parasitology, immunology, genetics, biological weapons? What do these fields have to do with UFOs?

It doesn't take a great deal of imagination to come up with a few answers. Military and intelligence and microbiological people, working together on UFO scenarios, could easily concoct "threat assessments" focusing on "unique viruses coming to Earth from space." Via drift, or even through "aliens" visiting from afar.

I say "threat assessments," because that is how these people think and how they spin.

Don't be too surprised if you hear language like this emerge:

"We must prepare for all eventualities. After all, if we aren't alone in the universe, we could be subject to life forms at the micro level we aren't ready for, and to which we have no natural immunity..."

When your professional background is inventing enemies, there are no limits to the scenarios you'll dream up.

Suppose we soon hear this: "Dr. X has suggested the need for extensive research on possible vaccines against a whole range of unknown viral species from outer space..."

The CEO of Merck would sit up straight and grab the phone. He would want to talk to his contact at the Defense Department. He smells a new government contract.

A few big shots at the US Centers for Disease Control would huddle in a meeting. How can they get in on the action? Perhaps they can find an astrobiologist who'll claim "the possibility of human disease originating in space has been considered for many years. We've always been puzzled by the genetic makeup of certain viruses. When you consider that components involved in the formation of Earth itself could have come from distant space, these components certainly could have carried microbes with them..."

Yes, that would be a start. "And if, in fact, we have had 'visitors,' wouldn't they carry their own set of unique viruses?"

Here is an actual news story from gizmodo.com (6/22/15), "Why Scientists Have Been Scared of Space Germs for Almost 50 Years":

"The 1967 Outer Space Treaty was one of the few things the U.S. and the Soviet Union managed to agree on at the height of the Cold War. Among other things, it forbid both nations from bringing space microbes back to Earth, or spreading Earth germs to other planets.

"Mostly, they [scientists] worry about single-celled, microscopic organisms, such as bacteria, some fungi, and viruses -- or whatever the alien version of single-celled life looks like. We know for certain that bacteria and viruses can survive exposure to the harsh conditions of space long enough to hitch a ride to someplace more hospitable [like Earth].

"Once they [Apollo mission personnel] returned to Earth, the crews went into immediate quarantine. First they lived in a mobile isolation unit on the aircraft carrier that recovered the landing capsule, then in an aircraft set up for isolation, and finally in a special quarantine unit at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. They stayed there for three weeks, while NASA doctors performed tests and watched for any signs of illness that might indicate an alien infection."

Perfect. The intelligence and military and medical people at DeLonge's Academy could cook up "space-virus" scenarios in a heartbeat. And with a series of press statements, they could pitch a threat assessment to the press. They already own a direct pipeline to the NY Times, which tells you they have an official green light to move forward.

We're looking at something extraordinary here. A rock musician, who's been intensely interested in UFOs for years, starts his own Academy, and he's instantly surrounded by important CIA and Pentagon and medical players. They have access to the most powerful press outlets.

They've already sold a story about military contact with a UFO, and another story about pieces from a UFO that resist all attempts at analysis. It was a remarkably easy sale. Poof. No problem.

Why not hoist up the flag on bio-threats from deep space? Carefully craft the language. Peddle that tale, too.

There are lots of payoffs. Raise the public level of fear. Always a goal when the CIA and the Pentagon are in the game. Stimulate government contracts (big money) for new medical research. Use this research as a cover for yet more (illegal) work on offensive bio-warfare programs. Hell, if they're going to go that far, why not claim the Russians have already isolated viruses from space and are developing super bio-weapons -- and you have the makings of a brand new shiny Cold War.

Too wild to be believed? No, not really. When you own the basic narrative, and you have good propagandists at your disposal, the sky's the limit.

Or in this case, space.

It may be the Final Frontier of exploration, but it's also the frontier of sheer fabrication.

"Are you ready, boys? All right, let's go. Work it. Work the new virus-from-space scenario. This is a big one. All hands on deck. Sell it. Sell that jive. The New York Times is panting for more. Give it to them."

There are rumblings in Congress about resurrecting the Reagan Star Wars plan to build space weapons, which would intercept enemy nuclear missiles. Why not piggy-back a staggeringly expensive program to install "virus detectors" in space, to alert the government to "incoming microbes" from Out There -- or from purported Russian "bio-attacks?"

"They'd never be able to sell that idea."

Really? Given enough time and propaganda, and given control of the basic narrative, government scientists can sell almost anything.

For decades, they've been selling the concept and practice of taking babies and toddlers, who possess almost no immune systems of their own, and injecting them with brews of toxic chemicals and microbes -- known as vaccination -- in order to stimulate and produce immunity in those non-existent immune systems.

Back in the mid-1990s, a whole brew of hysteria was whipped up about the Hot Zone. The thesis went this way: Because of the ease of global travel, all sorts of dangerous viruses, buried for centuries in Africa and the rainforests of South America, were going to come to the West and kill untold numbers of people, who had developed no natural immunity to them. Books and articles and films about this threat appeared.

Well, the next great Hot Zone story would be Space.

And To the Stars Academy has the right people on board to promote and hustle it.

Plus, on the side, DeLonge's Academy can always use all those medical experts to analyze an alien ET body that suddenly pops up in a locker at Area 51.

Still No Answers on Intelligent Life, UFOs

Still No Answers on Intelligent Life, UFOs

GetFile.aspx?guid=f5128f35-c88b-4ece-a0da-71644bae8e9c&SiteName=NewsmaxBy Larry Bell

During the early 1990s, soon after the collapse of the Soviet Union, I was among the first Americans to visit Russian space organizations and facilities. On one of those numerous trips, I was invited to a private dinner at the home of a senior professor of the Moscow Aviation Institute, a leading university for training aerospace engineers and cosmonauts. An event of that evening produced a surprise which remains entirely baffling to this day.

Displayed on my host’s wall, was a framed picture of the Buran spacecraft, a virtual Russian copy of our U.S. Space Shuttle, photographed at their Baikonur launch facility in Kazakhstan. The image also showed what clearly appeared to be another spacecraft — one that was entirely unfamiliar — hovering higher above the same launch pad. Likely due to altitude, the image of the second vehicle was quite small in comparison with Buron.

Before mentally attributing any significant importance to that matter, I casually quipped that it looked like a "flying saucer" was observing launch preparations. Without replying, professor Vladimir Malozemov produced an enlarged image which exclusively centered upon that object. Its cylindrical, perfectly symmetrical form left no doubt that it was, indeed, very purposefully crafted.

Although passing decades have robbed my memory of a better description — and Dr. Malozemov is no longer living — I fully expect that other copies of that photograph still exist. I also recall that he told me of many other similarly unexplained Russian sightings having been reported. He had no reason to impress me with a fictional account — nor was there any indication to suggest that he was any less bewildered regarding the subject than I was.

I am prompted to recall this strange occurrence now because of news that that the Pentagon has recently admitted spending more than $22 million between 2007 and 2012 for a little-known project to investigate UFOs called "The Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program" (AATIP).

The program was quietly inserted within the Defense Department’s $600 billion budget by then-Senate majority leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., a long-time proponent of the possibility of intelligent life both within and far beyond the Democratic Party, even Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass. He was supported in this enterprise by former and now-deceased senators Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, and Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, both World War II veterans.

Harry Reid was urged to initiate AATIP by his long-time friend (and mine), Robert Bigelow, a billionaire founder of Bigelow Aerospace (BAA) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

BAA is developing expandable ("inflatable") modules for space tourism, with the goal of establishing a "hotel" in lunar orbit by the mid-to-late 2020s. The company has already launched three test prototypes into Earth orbit, including a habitable Bigelow Expandable Activity Module (BEAM) which is attached to the International Space Station.

Robert Bigelow is passionately committed to unveiling mysteries surrounding "paranormal" events. Working with the U.S. Government’s AATIP program, he has modified some BAA buildings to accommodate storage of materials reportedly recovered from unidentified aerial phenomena.

In 1995, Mr. Bigelow established a National Institute for Discovery Sciences (NIDS), to study various fringe science and paranormal topics, most notably ufology. The following year he set up NIDS research operations on a ranch he purchased in northwestern Utah where strange events and sitings, including animal mutilations and lights in the ground and sky, had occurred.

Several years ago, Robert told me that a surveillance monitoring video camera mounted on a high pole, had been mysteriously removed within view of a continuously active camera on a second pole which failed to detect the event. He thought this was very strange — and it seemed so to me as well.

Although reportedly now cancelled, the ATTIP program, working in conjunction with Mr. Bigelow, has produced documents that describe sitings of aircraft that appear to move at very high velocities with no visible signs of propulsion, or which hover with no apparent means of lift. It has also collected and studied video encounters between unknown objects and American aircraft.

One video released in August, shows a whitish oval object, about the size of a commercial aircraft, being chased by two Navy F/A-18F fighter jets from the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz off the San Diego coast in 2004. The voice track affirms that the pilots are excitedly confused regarding its identity.

ATTIP was preceded in similar investigations by other now-cancelled government programs. Project Sign which began in 1947 in response to a wave of "flying saucer" reports, was replaced by Project Grudge, which ended its work in 1951 after investigating more than 250 cases. Project Blue Book, the longest and most well-known, was disbanded in 1969.

So finally, what have we really learned? Are there some super-secret technologies out there that either our government or others are hiding from us? Are far more intelligent aliens with warp drive cosmoscraft cruisers finding us interesting enough to warrant worm hole trips? Frankly, I don’t have a clue.

Larry Bell is an endowed professor of space architecture at the University of Houston where he founded the Sasakawa International Center for Space Architecture (SICSA) and the graduate program in space architecture. He is the author of "Scared Witless: Prophets and Profits of Climate Doom" (2015) and "Climate of Corruption: Politics and Power Behind the Global Warming Hoax" (2012).
