UFO secrets SOLVED: Experts reveal if 2018 is the year of ALIEN discovery
EXPERTS have had their say on the significance of 2017's UFO sightings and whether they mean an alien breakthrough could be imminent in an exclusive chat with Daily Star Online.
It has been a fascinating year in the search for alien life.
We have seen objects appear close to the International Space Station, UFOs stalking planes in Merseyside and groundbreaking NASA discoveries.
So, with many believing 2018 could be a breakthrough year, Daily Star Online has sat down with two world-leading experts to hear their thoughts.
GETTY
UFOs: Will we see alien life in 2018?
Nick Pope is a former Ministry of Defence employee best known for the role he undertook in investigating UFO sightings for the British Government.
In an exclusive chat, Nick revealed what he thought of a clip – shown above – allegedly showing a UFO.
Observers believe the footage shows a US spy plane encountering a 130ft flying object with 20 flashing lights near Cyprus.
And Nick claims it may be genuine, admitting: “This is an absolutely fascinating video.
“This is a case from the MoD's UFO files. Not only did I work on these real life X-Files, but I've been the public face of a ten-year project to declassify and release most of this material.
“The investigation into this incident was undertaken by my predecessors, but I'm aware of the case. It was a genuine unknown.
“Incidents like this, where there were multiple military witnesses and highly classified investigations show that whatever the truth about UFOs, the mystery raises important defence, national security and air safety issues.
"It's a perfect illustration of how the media and the public were misled.”
Despite hope it could change in the year to come, there has been a lot of concern among the UFO community as to whether NASA is hiding evidence of extraterrestrial life from the public.
The video below is just one of many from this year that space boffins claim are attempted cover-ups.
Nick believes these kind of clips have a lot of contributing factors as to whether they are UFOs, but also believes NASA has no reason to hide anything.
He said: “It's notoriously difficult to judge the size, distance and speed of an object in space.
“I think UFO hunters misunderstand agencies such as NASA and ESA. Far from being the sort of organisations that would cover up evidence of an extraterrestrial presence, they'd shout it from the rooftops.
“These people want to find aliens, not hide evidence of them."
Partly agreeing with Nick, Philip Mantle believes that with the technology available these days, we should be doing a better job at capturing UFOs.
Mantle, a highly regarded and active British researcher of UFOs, said: “The question is why, despite the millions of cameras that are available do we still have poor quality film and photos of alleged UFOs?
“The fact is that the percentage of UFO reports that remain unidentified is well under 1%.
"In short, genuine UFO sightings are extremely rare, therefore the chances of actually capturing one of film is almost, but not quite, impossible."
The video below – that appears to show a mysterious green orb floating above a mountain – is an example of UFO footage captured poorly, Philip believes.
He added: “In our modern society today there are CCTV cameras everywhere and countless millions of mobile phones that have as a built in feature the ability to to take still photos and videos.
“But when it comes to UFO video footage the results, and let's be honest, are poorer than ever.”
Nick agrees that while there have been an increase in the number of sightings, many of them are in fact, far from UFOs.
He said: “Firstly, there's a lot of hoaxing in this subject. However, even where we can be sure the images are genuine, they're often indistinct, and ambiguous.
“In most cases these are misidentifications of aircraft, drones, satellites, meteors, fireballs, stars and planets, Chinese lanterns, weather balloons and all sorts of other other objects and phenomena.
“In other cases, they're the result of lens flare, other reflections, dust or dirt on the lens, or a technical problem with the camera.”
Existence of advanced UFOs 'beyond reasonable doubt', says ex-Pentagon official
London [UK], Dec 26 (ANI): There have been many debates surrounding the existence of UFOs and aliens.
But, according to a former Pentagon official, the presence of an alien craft on earth has been proved "beyond reasonable doubt," according to The Telegraph.
He said, "In my opinion, if this was a court of law, we have reached the point of 'beyond reasonable doubt'. I hate to use the term UFO but that's what we're looking at. I think it's pretty clear this is not us, and it's not anyone else, so one has to ask the question where they're from."
A number of details about the project remain classified but Mr Elizondo revealed that considerable work had gone into the project - sufficient enough to map patterns of behaviour.
The team identified movements and trends that were not like anything else "in the world".
They also discovered "hotspots" during their investigation, which were often near nuclear facilities and power plants.
Describing the findings, Mr Elizondo noted, "Extreme manoeuvrability, hyper-sonic velocity without a sonic boom, speeds of 7-8,000mph, no flight surfaces on the objects. A lot of this is backed with radar signal data, gun camera footage from aircraft, multiple witnesses."
The Pentagon said funding for AATIP ended in 2012, but Mr Elizondo said his team's UFO work carried on for another five years. (ANI)
Some major news organizations reported the other day that our government has been actively investigating UFOs in an effort known as the "Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program."
One story, by reporter Eli Rosenberg of the Washington Post, said this previously under-the-radar program, which resurrected much of the mission behind the government's long-defunct Project Blue Book (that explored essentially the same reports of unexplained aerial phenomenon) was in full swing between 2007 and 2012. Some aspects of it continue.
A compelling story contained in the report kept under wraps by the Pentagon until this month details the experience of former U.S. Navy Cmdr. David Fravor, who during his time in service said he witnessed a UFO.
It was Nov. 14, 2004, when Fravor was leading a squadron of F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets in an exercise off the southern California coastline when he saw an object the size of his plane and shaped like a Tic-Tac.
"It was a real object, it exists and I saw it," he told the reporter, emphatically adding that it was "something not from the earth."
The story said he was ordered to head about 60 miles west of his squadron's location to investigate unidentified flying objects that were descending from 80,000 to 20,000 feet before disappearing. On scene, Fravor said they could see the object, flying around a frothy patch of whitewater in the ocean.
"A white Tic-Tac, about the same size as a Hornet, 40 feet long with no wings," Fravor described to Rosenberg. "Just hanging close to the water." The object created no impressions on the water. Pilots pursued the object.
"As I get closer, as my nose is starting to pull back up, it accelerates and it's gone," Fravor said. "Faster than I'd ever seen anything in my life. We turn around, say let's go see what's in the water and there's nothing. Just blue water."
Fravor said as his plane headed back to the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier, a separate crew headed out to search. They were able to track it for about 90 seconds and shoot video. He said his superiors didn't seem that interested. So, in what's become normal fashion from those who don't share similar experiences firsthand, they took a ribbing from their colleagues. He didn't talk about it much afterwards, Fravor said.
Fravor retired in 2006 and later shared the story with family and some who asked about it. Then in 2009 a government official contacted him while doing "an unofficial investigation." Luis Elizondo, an intelligence officer who later contacted him, "ran the secretive program at the Department of Defense that was just disclosed," Rosenberg wrote.
Interestingly, Elizondo also has since left the government and works for the private To the Stars Academy of Arts and Science, which hopes to further promote UFO research. Elizondo is a large part of why the story is in the news; he was responsible for the release of three UFO videos from the Pentagon, including the video made on the same day and place as Fravor's experience.
Fravor said he realizes sharing his story has subjected him to some good-natured teasing but believes what he witnessed should be more closely studied.
"I don't think I was a nutjob as an officer in the Navy. I wasn't drunk, I don't do drugs. I got a good night's rest, it was a clear day," he told the reporter. "I think someone should have looked into it. Having talked to some of the other folks, it's a big frustration that it's coming out now and wasn't discussed back in 2004."
Fact is, Fravor's story especially resonates with me after my experience living at Fort Chaffee in 1957. I was 10 years old and had headed just before darkness fell with my 7-year-old brother, Grant, to ogle a firetruck that arrived with red lights flashing to extinguish a blaze three blocks down the street from our home.
We watched for 10 or 15 minutes until I looked up to see it had become fully dark. Knowing we'd be in trouble, I grabbed his hand and we began hurrying back to the house when we arrived beneath a streetlight intersection and something made me look up.
There, sitting silently a few hundred feet above us, was a large, glowing sphere that was pulsing light from bright to slightly dimmer. I asked my brother to look up and he immediately became frightened, asking what the massive thing was.
As surely as Fravor saw what he did in 2004, I knew what I was witnessing.
We watched for less than a minute as this brilliant mystery hovered. It seemed so odd for something this large not to be making a sound. Then it began to move slightly and in literally a flash, this glowing oval zipped over the horizon.
So when I read so many highly credible stories like Fravor's and realize there are untold numbers out there with similar untold accounts, I realize there is so much more about this impossibly complex universe comprised of energy frequencies we don't comprehend.

In this interview, we get insight from John and Nick into the recent news broken by The New York Times, with releases by Poltico and The Washington Post within hours, that the Department of Defense has had a secret UFO project since 2007. News outlets around the world are covering the story, and these guys are in high demand, so we are very lucky to have been able to speak with them. Outside of those directly involved, these are two of the most qualified to speak on this matter.
Ancient astronomical observatory discovered in Peru
500 years before the Egyptians, an ancient civilization in Peru built incredible Pyramids ·
Excavation efforts at the archaeological site of Espiritu Pampa, in the Cusco region in Peru, resulted in the discovery of huge stone walls, an astronomical observatory, and spaces with animal teeth, silver objects, ceramic vessels, tupus, and other evidence of the Wari and Inca cultures.
Specialists of the Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Cusco (DDCC) who maintain meticulous work in Espíritu Pampa, located in the jungle of Vilcabamba district, La Convención province, confirmed the recent findings.
Illustrated here are some of the recently excavated artifacts belonging to the ancient Wari Culture, Peru.

Javier Fonseca, an archaeologist who heads the multidisciplinary team, explained that the walls of a huge temple form a letter D, a characteristic feature which makes it clear that this architecture is typical of the Wari culture that originated in Ayacucho and extended all the way to Cusco.
In the center of the building, archaeologists discovered another small structure that also has the shape of the letter D, which because of its symbolic and expressive location, is considered to have served as an astronomical observatory or a place where the ancient Wari performed magical and religious rituals.
Inside the interior of the large structure archaeologists also discovered two spaces built with small stone slabs.
Images credit: ANDINA/Difusión
Fragments of animal remains were discovered inside, together with two ceramic bottles of notable Wari style, a silver pectoral and a crown or silver headdress.
One of the bottles of the ancient Wari depicts the face of a human being characterized by enormous eyes, nose, and mouth.
However, the most striking detail say researchers, is the crown that is painted on the head, which indicates that Espiritu Pampa was occupied by characters of the ruling elite during the peak of the Wari culture.
On the side of the large enclosure in the shape of the letter D, an Inca signature structure was discovered by experts, with quadrangular and rectangular design, inside which were pins (called tupus), silver needles and ceremonial ceramics.
All these artifacts belonging to pre-Hispanic cultures will be submitted to the conservation process at DDCC’s Physical Chemistry Unit for subsequent investigation.
Researchers find the oldest ‘Marine Monster’ that once lived on Antarctica
It is a 150 million-year-old carnivorous marine reptile that exceeded six meters in length. It was discovered in the Antarctic Peninsula, at a new paleontological site located 113 kilometers southwest of the Marambio Base.
As you’ve probably found out by now, Antarctica was a really different place in the distant past.
Despite the fact that Antarctica we know today is covered in snow and ice, millions of years ago, this place was teeming with life.
Now, researchers have discovered the fossil remains of a carnivorous marine reptile that lived 150 million years ago on Antarctica.
It is a plesiosaur more than six meters long.
Dr. Gouiric Cavalli, Dr. José O’Gorman and technicians Juan José Moly and Leonel Acosta Burllaile camped in this new paleontological site for 40 days.

The discovery is of great importance as it is the first record of a plesiosaur of the Jurassic period in Antarctica. The remains were excavated by paleontologists from the University of La Matanza (Argentina) in the Antarctic Peninsula, at a new paleontological site located 113 kilometers southwest of the Marambio Base.
Paleontologist José Patricio O’Gorman, a researcher at the Museo de la Plata (MLP) and CONICET, told the CtyS agency “this plesiosaur record is 80 million years older than what was initially known for Antarctica.”
Researchers say that they are positive it is a plesiosaur but not specifically which genre or variety it belongs.

“It was the first paleontological campaign that we carried out in this outcrop, which is like a frozen, 150 million-year-old sea in an excellent state of conservation”, highlighted the main author of the study that was accepted to be published in the scientific journal Comptes Rendus Palevol.
Dr. Soledad Gouiric Cavalli, MLP and CONICET specialist in the study of Jurassic creatures, told the CtyS Agency that “when walking through the deposit we found a great diversity of fish, ammonites, some bivalves, but we did not expect to find a plesiosaurus of such antiquity; it was amazing”.
The excavation site is located 113 kilometers southwest of the Marambio Base.

“The find is quite extraordinary because the site does not have the type of rocks in which you can find materials preserved in three dimensions, as is the case of the vertebrae of this marine reptile,” explained the researcher.
The area where the discovery was made can only be reached after a two-hour flight by helicopter from the Marambio Base, so the researchers highlighted the excellent logistics provided by the Argentine Antarctic Institute (IAA).
Dr. Marcelo Reguero pointed out that “these rich and unique deposits in marine Jurassic vertebrates belong to the time when Antarctica was part of the Gondwana continent and was next to Australia, New Zealand, India, Madagascar, Africa and South America.”
The temperature of the seas was much higher 150 million years ago and the world map was very different.
According to Dr. José O’Gorman, this plesiosaurus, besides being the first of its kind in the Jurassic in Antarctica, serves as evidence in favor of the possibility of the dispersal of these reptiles by means of a passage that existed between Africa and Antarctica, which at that time had just separated.
The elements that make up our bodies and everything around us are born inside stars. This new X-ray image shows them being released into space.
Meet Cass A. It’s what’s left after a star exploded as a supernova, some 11,000 light-years away. This colorful image from Chandra X-ray Observatory shows the location of different elements, newly released by the explosion. We can see the location of these elements, because each produces X-rays within narrow energy ranges.
Chandra X-ray Observatory released a new wonderful image (above) this month of Cassiopeia A, a well-studied supernova remnant. Cass A is what is left of a star that exploded and that must have appeared in Earth’s sky some 300 years ago. The expanding cloud of material left by the supernova now measures approximately 10 light-years across from our earthly perspective. What’s cool about this X-ray image are different colors, which show the presence of different elements, including silicon (red), sulfur (yellow), calcium (green) and iron (purple). These are the elements in our bodies and all around us on Earth and in space. They are indeed created inside stars and released to space by supernovae. The blast wave from the Cass A explosion is seen as the blue outer ring.
A statement from Chandra said:
Astronomers have long studied exploded stars and their remains — known as ‘supernova remnants’ — to better understand exactly how stars produce and then disseminate many of the elements observed on Earth, and in the cosmos at large.
Here’s a breakdown of the colors in the new X-ray image of Cassiopeia A. Silicon (red), sulfur (yellow), calcium (green) and iron (purple).
Bottom line: A new X-ray image from Chandra shows different colors, showing the release of different elements, including silicon (red), sulfur (yellow), calcium (green) and iron (purple). These elements may eventually find their way into new planets, and perhaps new living creatures.
Evidence of life processes found in fossils in 3.5-billion-year-old rocks. Scientists say this work suggests life in our universe is widespread.
J. William Schopf and colleagues from UCLA and the University of Wisconsin analyzed the microfossils with a cutting-edge technique called secondary ion mass spectroscopy.
This month, scientists from UCLA and the University of Wisconsin–Madison announced the results of their analysis of rock samples found decades ago in Western Australia. They say the rocks contain fossils of 3.465-billion-year-old microorganisms, the oldest ones known. The study’s lead author – paleontologist J. William Schopf of UCLA – collected the fossils in 1982 and interpreted them then as early life. Critics had argued they were just odd minerals that only looked like biological specimens. The new study shows that two of the species appear to have performed a primitive form of photosynthesis, another apparently produced methane gas, and two others appear to have consumed methane and used it to build their cell walls.
Thus, according to these scientists, the new findings show the microfossils are indeed biological. Plus, they said, the fossils provide:
… strong evidence to support an increasingly widespread understanding that life in the universe is common.
Their work was published December 18, 2017 in the peer-reviewed journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
These scientists say their work strengthens the case for life existing elsewhere in the universe because, they say, it shows a diverse group of organisms had already evolved extremely early in the Earth’s history. That early earthly life — combined with our knowledge of the vast number of stars in the universe and the growing understanding that planets orbit so many of them — suggests life is common in the universe. Schopf commented in a statement:
… it would be extremely unlikely that life formed quickly on Earth, but did not arise anywhere else.
The microfossils came from the Apex Chert, a rock formation in Western Australia. This area is among the oldest and best-preserved rock deposits in the world.
The scientists say their study is the most detailed ever conducted on microorganisms preserved in such ancient fossils. They said their study is:
… the first to establish what kind of biological microbial organisms they are, and how advanced or primitive they are.
The study describes 11 microbial specimens from five separate taxa. According to these scientists, some represent now-extinct bacteria and microbes from a domain of life called Archaea, while others are similar to microbial species still found today.
The scientists analyzed the microorganisms at the Wisconsin Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer Lab (WiscSIMS) in Madison. It is one of just a few places in the world where this type of work can be done. Secondary ion mass spectroscopy revealed the ratio of carbon-12 to carbon-13 isotopes in the fossils.
The scientists then were able to use this information to determine how the microorganisms lived. The study’s co-author, geoscientist John Valley of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said:
The differences in carbon isotope ratios correlate with their shapes. Their C-13-to-C-12 ratios are characteristic of biology and metabolic function.
When these fossils were formed, these scientists said, there was very little oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere. In fact, oxygen would have been poisonous to these microorganisms, and would have killed them, they said. Oxygen first appeared on Earth approximately half a billion years later, before its concentration in our atmosphere increased rapidly starting about 2 billion years ago. Thus, at the time these ancient microorganisms were alive, advanced photosynthesis didn’t exist yet.
The scientists also said the very existence of the rocks they analyzed is remarkable. That’s because the average lifetime of a rock exposed on Earth’s surface is about 200 million years. William Schopf commented that, when he began his career, there was no fossil evidence of life dating back farther than 500 million years ago. He added:
The rocks we studied are about as far back as rocks go.
An example of one of the microfossils discovered in a sample of rock recovered from the Apex Chert. A new study used sophisticated chemical analysis to confirm the microscopic structures found in the rock are biological.
By 3.465 billion years ago, life was already diverse on Earth; that’s clear — primitive photosynthesizers, methane producers, methane users. These are the first data that show the very diverse organisms at that time in Earth’s history, and our previous research has shown that there were sulfur users 3.4 billion years ago as well.
This tells us life had to have begun substantially earlier and it confirms that it was not difficult for primitive life to form and to evolve into more advanced microorganisms.
Schopf said scientists still don’t know how much earlier life might have begun. But, he said:
… if the conditions are right, it looks like life in the universe should be widespread.
Geoscientist John Valley, left, and research scientist Kouki Kitajima collaborate in the Wisconsin Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer Lab (WiscSIMS).
Bottom line: Scientists analyzed fossil microorganism specimens from 3.465 billion years ago, providing strong evidence to support an increasingly widespread understanding that life in the universe is common.
Hoaxes are common and even easier to create than ever with modern technology
(Picture: Ray Massey/The Image Bank)
Some people have gone through their entire lives adamant that they shared an encounter with a genuine, real-life alien.
Others have produced what they claim is definitive proof of extra-terrestrial life – blurry video clips of mysterious figures, or unexplained images purportedly showing UFOs in the sky. But for every account that ufologists deem worthy of further investigation, countless hoaxes are invented to shame, embarrass or poke fun at a community desperate to make an historic breakthrough.
These can range from little white lies that are instantly dismissed by experts to scandals that rock the community having been regarded as truthful for decades.
What isn’t a mystery to researchers is why people go to the trouble of attempting to fool them.
The Rendlesham Forest incident is the UK’s most famous sighting According to Philip Mantle, a world renowned UFO researcher and author with 40 years in the field, there are three reasons why people lie about alien sightings.
They are simply to create ‘mischief’, to make money by selling their story to media outlets, or to make UFO experts look gullible and foolish.
Mr Mantle told Metro.co.uk: ‘It can be damaging when a hoax does slip through the net and appears on TV or in newspapers. It does cast a shadow on that subject.
‘There is also a small number of researchers who will never admit it is a hoax..
‘They have such a strong belief that there is no amount of evidence that will prove to them it is a fake.’
Plenty of people lie about seeing UFOs
(Picture: Getty)
Mr Mantle has a ‘guilty until proven innocent’ policy, regarding any ‘evidence’ he receives with the utmost suspicion.
Such an attitude is even more important in an age where anyone can edit or adapt footage and photographs, making cons even harder to uncover.
5 most searched selfies of 2017 have some crazy stories behind them Mr Mantle added: ‘There needs to be more diligence now then there ever was. But equally, the tools to investigate claims are more readily available.
‘I think those that have been a hoax, I have managed to show that is exactly what they were. But we are all human and they can slip through the net.
‘A lot of them are not deliberate hoaxes but genuine mistakes, or it might be an individual who is sceptical who will conduct a hoax to show how gullible UFO experts are.’
Larry Warren has been accused of lying about witnessing the UFO at Rendlesham Forest
(Picture: YouTube)
When a possible fake story does slip through the net – and when the suspected hoax is a significant account of one of Britain’s most famous UFO sightings – the repercussions can be seismic.
Larry Warren, who claims he witnessed a UFO landing in Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk in 1980 and later co-authored a book about the incident, has been accused of making the whole thing up.
Mr Warren has stood by his account – but his co-author Peter Robbins has said he feels ‘deceived’ and the publisher of their book has suspended distribution.
Nick Pope, a former UFO expert for the Ministry of Defence, has criticised Mr Warren over the incident.
Describing Mr Warren as an ‘attention-seeker’, Mr Pope said people who make up false stories are ‘crackpots, frauds and charlatans’.
He told Metro.co.uk: ‘While there can be many motivations for hoaxing, the most common one is attention-seeking. It’s a case of the nobody who wants to be a somebody.
‘In relation to UFOs it’s particularly effective because hoaxers are pushing at an open door, given that the UFO community has a strong will to believe.
‘Hoaxers take advantage of this by telling people exactly what they want to hear, shaping their lies to fit people’s existing belief system.
‘Mud sticks, and a single hoax can be remembered long after years of good quality research and investigation have been forgotten. The danger is that people throw out the baby with the bathwater, dismissing the UFO phenomenon as a whole.
‘The exposure of the Larry Warren fraud has damaged the standing of the case itself, even though most of the story is verified by declassified Ministry of Defence documents. But, for a while at least, all people will remember is ‘that guy who made up a crazy UFO story’.’
UFO experts agree that something mysterious happened in the forest in 1980
(Picture: Taras Young)
Cosimo, the publisher of ‘Left at East Gate: A First-Hand Account of the Bentwater-Woodbridge UFO Incident, its Cover-Up, and Investigation’, has suspended distribution of the book.
In a statement, Cosimo said: ‘It has been brought to our attention that some of the experiences described in this book may be inaccurate or embellished.
‘As an independent publisher, we look for quality books in a wide range of genres from public affairs and personal development to history, philosophy and niche subjects such as ufology, and then make a determination whether these books fit well within our catalogue.
‘At this moment, we cannot be certain that Left at East Gate still meets this standard. Consequently, we have decided to suspend the distribution of this book, until the situation surrounding it has been clarified to our satisfaction.’
Mr Warren has insisted his version of events really happened.
The December 15th New York Times story that revealed a secret Pentagon UFO program that reportedly operated from 2007 through 2012 still has media outlets and UFO researchers reacting.
This UFO program was revealed by military intelligence official Luis Elizondo back on October 11, 2017 during the launch event for To The Stars Academy of Arts and Science (TTS/AAS)—a new science, aerospace, and entertainment company founded by musician and serial entrepreneur Tom DeLonge. At this event, Elizondo, who served as senior intelligence officer in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, announced that he had headed up “a sensitive aerospace threat identification program focusing on unidentified aerial technologies.” And he alleges the program is still operating. His statement that an official UFO program currently exists was surprising enough. But he added that, through his time working on the project, he “learned that the phenomena is indeed real.” The main significance of the New York Times article is the confirmation from the Pentagon that, at least from 2007-2012, the program did, in fact, exist.
Elizondo left his Department of Defense (DoD) position to join other former high-level government/military officials and scientists at TTS/AAS. This organization just launched its Community of Interest—an online platform designed to “enable interdisciplinary collaboration on reporting and analysis of anomalies among the public at large, academia, industry partners, government and every level of law enforcement.” It was on this platform that two declassified UFO videos (which were included in the New York Times story) were published.
Many UFO researchers are understandably excited by the Pentagon’s acknowledgement of a recent official UFO study. But it’s important to avoid the desire to fill in the blanks or make more out of this information than actually exists. Here are five things to keep in mind when navigating the sensational headlines about this story and the hype it has created:
1. Official UFO Studies are Cool. But They’re Not New.
Governments around the world actively study UFOs. The US government has conducted multiple studies on the subject, notably Projects Sign, Grudge, and Blue Book.
Project Sign (1947) – First official U.S. Air Force UFO investigation.Project Grudge (1949) – Established with a mandate to explain away all UFO sightings and to foster the idea to the media and the general public that UFOs were just silly nonsense.
Concluded that extraterrestrials were the best and likely explanation for some of the UFO incidents studied.
Project Blue Book (1952) – A 17-year study that investigated more than 12,000 UFO reports. And of those, 701 couldn’t be identified.
Although we know the US government officially investigated UFOs in the past, the recent confirmation of a contemporary government UFO study is noteworthy. It affirms what many have suspected for so many years: The government is still interested and concerned about Unidentified Aerial Phenomena, despite actively denying this for decades.
2. Sorry, but this is not the “Disclosure” you’re looking for.
Many are cheering, viewing the Pentagon’s confirmation of its UFO program as the grand Disclosure many hope to receive from the government. But nothing has really been disclosed, from an official level, other than the existence of a program to study and identify aerial threats. The government has not announced that extraterrestrials are visiting Earth, or that the anomalous objects studied by the program were found to be extraterrestrial in origin. Luis Elizondo has voiced his personal opinion that evidence supports the ET possibility. UFO history is filled with former high-level government and military officials who have made extraordinary claims, or have voiced their pro-ET opinions. But no such official statement has come from the government.
Many are also exercising their conspiracy speculation skills, pondering the government’s real motive behind choosing now to reveal its UFO information. Well, again, the government hasn’t disclosed anything yet, aside from confirming the existence of a former UFO study at the Pentagon. The UFO-related information brought forward recently, and other forthcoming information, is courtesy of TTS/AAS. Although its team includes former high level military/government officials and/or contractors, the information and its analysis/interpretations are from this private company, not the government.
3. The UFO program contracted with BAASS.
Perhaps the most interesting (yet not surprising) element revealed about the Pentagon’s UFO program is that it contracted with private space pioneer Robert Bigelow—an individual whose extraterrestrial beliefs are well documented—and the Advanced Space Studies (BAASS) department of Bigelow Aerospace. Bigelow has spent millions of his own fortune investigating UFOs, claims of extraterrestrial contact, and other paranormal phenomena.
It was during the time period of the Pentagon’s UFO program that BAASS was listed as one of the organizations to whom the FAA directed pilots wishing to report UFO sightings. Chapter 9, Section 8 of the FAA Air Traffic Organization Policy instructed, “Persons wanting to report UFO/unexplained phenomena activity should contact a UFO/ unexplained phenomena reporting data collection center, such as Bigelow Aerospace Advanced Space Studies (BAASS) (voice: 1-877-979-7444 or e-mail: Reporting@baass.org), the National UFO Reporting Center, etc.”
It was also during the same time period that BAASS contracted with the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) to fund its STAR Team in exchange for access to investigation data.
4. Don’t jump to conclusions regarding the recovered UFO material.
Bigelow reportedly, at his own expense, modified buildings at Bigelow Aerospace headquarters for the purpose of storing physical material allegedly recovered from UFOs. This sounds awesome. But it’s important to refrain from making assumptions based on the limited provided information. Again, this bit of information comes from an individual, and has not been confirmed by the Pentagon. We don’t know the provenance of these material samples. And we don’t know if these artifacts were personally collected at crash sites by Bigelow’s team or government officials, or if these were just acquired by Bigelow from people claiming to have recovered something from a UFO crash. We also don’t know the results of any testing performed on this material.
5. Exercise patience.
It’s difficult to resist getting caught up in the recent UFO frenzy. It’s exciting seeing the flood of media attention the subject has received in recent weeks. But it’s all to easy to see what you want to see in these kinds of stories. So far, only tiny bits and pieces of a much larger story have been reported. Anything beyond those pieces is speculation at this point. So we just have to wait and see if any further information is released to the public before we can even consider getting a little excited (or a lot freaked out) about possible proof of extraterrestrial visitors.

Whistle-blower Edward Snowden has some strong opinions on communications — even when those communications are coming from aliens.
The former intelligence-agency contractor turned fugitive was an unexpected guest on famous astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson's StarTalk podcast on September 18. And, inevitably, the two got to talking about extraterrestrials.
Snowden became an infamous household name in 2013 when he leaked classified documents divulging the government's top-secret mass-surveillance program, which involved collecting personal information on Americans via phone records without their knowledge.
When the news broke, the US charged him with theft and espionage, and he's now living in Russia where he has asylum.
But Tyson scored an interview with him in New York City. How? Snowden rigged a robot that he can control from Russia, and rolled right into Tyson's office at the Hayden Planetarium in New York with his face displayed on the screen.
The conversation turned to encryption and cybersecurity, but here's where an astrophysicist differs from a journalist: Tyson's line of questioning quickly turned to how encryption relates to communication with ... aliens.
Tyson asked Snowden if a highly intelligent alien civilization might be communicating with encrypted messages. And Snowden had an unsettling answer.
First, Snowden said, let's assume that most advanced societies eventually realize that they need to encrypt their communication in order to protect it. This could also be the reason why we've never heard from other civilizations — their messages may have just been melding into the background static of the universe.
So if you have an alien civilization trying to listen for other civilizations, or our civilization trying to listen for aliens, there's only one small period in the development of their society when all of their communication will be sent via the most primitive and most unprotected means.
So when we think about everything that we're hearing through our satellites or everything that they're hearing from our civilization (if there are indeed aliens out there), all of their communications are encrypted by default.
So what we are hearing, that's actually an alien television show or, you know, a phone call ... is indistinguishable to us from cosmic microwave background radiation.
So it could be possible there are alien messages constantly hitting our satellites, and we just don't recognize them because they're so heavily encrypted. (The cosmic microwave background radiation that Snowden mentions is thermal radiation throughout the universe left over from the Big Bang. It basically looks and sounds like static to us puny humans.)
Of course, that's assuming an alien civilization has the same security issues that we have here on Earth, and they need to worry about protecting their communication system from their alien governments, Tyson jokes.
Snowden agreed that aliens might be a little more politically sophisticated than us.
A recent news item involving UFOs has caught the public’s attention. A Navy pilot’s gun camera shows an unknown aerial object above the ocean near San Diego. It was performing aerial maneuvers not known to be possible by any U.S. technology. The pilot’s description of the object included the sensational phrase, "I can tell you, I think it was not from this world."
The government’s interest in this sort of sighting is that there may be a national defense issue involved. If the reported objects are from a potentially hostile nation, let’s say China or Russia, then of course they are possibly involved in reconnaissance or other activity that endangers our national security. If the phenomenon emanates from a smaller country, say Luxembourg, the scientific benefits are potentially enormous. If they emanate from Iran or North Korea, we are in grave military peril.
However, that scenario seems unlikely. Any nation that possesses such advanced technology would already be in a position to extort vast concessions from the United States and other nations. This kind of technology cannot exist in an industrial vacuum. A fleet of aircraft capable of what the UFOs have been reportedly performing would be part of a system that could overwhelm our defenses in short order. It has not happened.
Another possibility seems equally far-fetched -- that of interlopers from a planet other than ours, the so-called space invaders theory.
It is not that the possibility of exo-civilizations is considered unlikely. Quite to the contrary -- most scientists seem to accept it as all but a given, despite a lack of confirmatory evidence. Probability alone is considered evidence enough. What is unlikely is that such alien societies seek to harm us.
This is evident because of the following: just as any hostile earthly power in possession of ultra-advanced technology would already have overpowered us, the ability of alien conquerors would presumably be multiples of terrestrial forces. While Hollywood may fantasize about our ability to fight off alien spaceships, the probable reality is that hostile aliens would barely notice any resistance by us. Indeed, they could easily launch a standoff attack, whether by missiles, drones, or even redirected asteroids, at no risk to themselves. And we have not even considered technologies so advanced that, to us, they would appear to be magic.
There is one further impediment to making any sense of UFO reports, which is that there seems to be a set of logical contradictions to any theory of what UFOs might actually represent. The main logical fallacy is that observed UFO behaviors, if accurately reported, seem to be irrational. On the one hand, UFOs act as if they wish to avoid being seen -- while on the other hand, they do get seen, despite having technology that should put our most advanced stealth techniques to shame. These two mutually exclusive aspects are difficult, if not impossible, to reconcile.
It has been suggested that the U.S. government fabricates UFO reports simply to confuse Russia and China, and to help conceal our own advanced technology. For example, when the USAF was testing the stealth fighter aircraft, these otherworldly-appearing aircraft were often misreported as UFOs, and the government did not discourage such reports.
One possible way to explain the erratic behavior of extraterrestrial UFOs is that they are alien space junk -- yes, junk -- that is, artifacts from exo-civilizations that have for one reason or another, gone rogue. For example, if an alien civilization created drones, and then the civilization went extinct, or otherwise lost control of its technology, then such machines might behave based on algorithms that have become flawed or damaged.
However, the most likely explanation of UFO sightings, if there is an otherworldly explanation, is that they represent something so utterly alien to our ways of thinking that our best efforts to contemplate them are entirely anthropocentric, completely off the mark.
Nor can we ignore the fact that the government money spent on UFO research, that is your money and mine, was allocated at the behest of former Democrat Senate leader Harry Reid, who directed much of that money to his crony friends, who supposedly used it for the purpose intended.
Don’t fall into this trap: ‘I don’t know what it is; therefore it’s aliens.’
‘Close Encounters,’ Steven Spielberg’s classic UFO mystery, helped feed into the UFO narrative.
You may have heard stories recently about a former military pilot who’s pretty sure he saw something in the sky that he can’t explain. Therefore, it must be aliens.
Well, I have my own former military pilot who’s pretty sure he saw something in the sky he couldn’t explain. He even thought it was aliens.
Turns out, it was Venus.
Which helps explain why I’m so confident that when it comes to UFOs, the answer is never aliens. The answer is always that the observer misunderstood what was seen, or remembers it wrong.
Steve Lundquist of Bow – he’s my former Air Force pilot – puts it more colorfully. When it comes to analyzing unexpected observations, he says: “Our brains are crap.”
I contacted Lundquist, who is now a program manager for a defense contractor and who serves on the board at the Discovery Center, in the wake of reports that the Pentagon has spent tens of millions of dollars studying reports of inexplicable flying things. Those reports produced accompanying stories of military pilots who saw lights in the sky going faster than possible or otherwise breaking the laws of physics, with strong implication that alien technology is the only answer.
Both Lundquist and I think it’s perfectly fine for the military to spend our tax dollars studying these reports, even though we’re quite sure that they won’t uncover beings from other solar systems.
“It’s about threat assessment,” Lundquist said. “It’s reasonable to look into unusual aerial sightings, to make sure that it doesn’t present a threat.”
The problem comes, he said, “When it turns into: ‘We don’t know what it is, therefore it’s little green men.’ ”
In New Hampshire, we have plenty of precedent for the military to study UFO reports, as well as plenty of people who conclude that they’re due to little green men.
A website called NHUFOresearch.com, for example, includes reports that the Pease Air Force Base had an official “UFO Investigating Officer” in 1967, a truly awesome job title that was presumably created in the wake of the Incident at Exeter, a 1965 UFO sighting along New Hampshire’s Seacoast that still gets adherents very excited.
Then there’s New Hampshire’s most famous UFO connection: Betty and Barney Hill’s insistence that in 1961 they were taken into a spaceship near Lancaster and probed. I don’t know that the military ever studied the Hills’ tale, but it certainly resonated in the civilian world, launching the whole alien-abduction craze and forming the basis for at least one feature film.
Of course it’s not totally impossible that alien civilizations are playing peek-a-boo among the clouds, just as it’s not totally impossible that the Tooth Fairy exists or that I will wake up tomorrow speaking fluent Spanish after years of being confused by Sábado Gigante.
But it is so staggeringly, incredibly unlikely that space invaders might as well be impossible. It seems to me that people who are not concerned about national defense should act as if UFOs are impossible and get on with more useful things in life.
Not so fast, you cry: What about the many reports that have come in over the decades from pilots, both civilian and military, about lights in the sky that are traveling at impossible speeds or with impossible acceleration at impossible angles covering impossible distances? Isn’t that evidence of alien technology?
No – it’s evidence that people are worse observers than we think we are. This gets us, finally, to Lundquist’s alien-sighting story.
I first heard his tale in 2012 at SkeptiCamp, a free-wheeling conference for skeptics, and he confirmed it last week.
It seems Lundquist was flying over the Middle East on a military flight when he saw a strange light moving way up ahead of him, flying at impossible speeds and elevations, “doing things that no aircraft can do.” This is your classic pilot-sees-UFO scenario.
Lundquist was stupefied and alarmed and came this close to radioing in a report before he realized that he was looking at the planet Venus. All that apparent motion was an optical illusion.
He’s thankful that he came to his senses in time instead of embarrassing himself over the military airwaves.
“I know a few instances where pilots did radio in, or filled out paperwork, and then later figured out what was happening. But no one remembers that they did eventually figure it out, and only remember the call or the paperwork,” he noted.
Lundquist’s error is particularly surprising because he is a longtime skeptic of UFOs and he knew, even then, that Venus is frequently mistaken for an alien craft. How could he be so misled to think that this bright, unmoving object was traveling in fantastic ways?
Blame natural selection.
“We evolved to see things on the plains of Africa from eyes about 5 feet off the ground,” Lundquist said. Shifting this evolved skill to tens of thousands of feet in the air, moving at hundreds of miles an hour, is asking for trouble, he said: “Our brains are going to try to make sense of the data, using a frame of reference we are familiar with.”
Which means that as often as not, we’re going to fool ourselves.
So the assumption you and I and everybody else should bring to reports of an extraordinary sighting – UFO, Bigfoot, Nessie, ghosts, Elvis, whatever – is that the person’s central nervous system tricked itself. They will insist “I know what I saw,” but that really means “I know what I think I saw,” and what they think is wrong.
Without lots of evidence, and evidence stronger more than a blurry video or photo or sound recording that’s open to interpretation, they can be safely ignored.

Pentagon's UFO Research Program Revelation Puts Spotlight On The UFO Phenomenon
This past weekend’s bombshell revelations regarding the Pentagon’s secret UFO research program has sparked a media frenzy surrounding the phenomenon which has produced some additional insights into the story.
Unlike many stories generated by the phenomenon, this particular tale seems to have taken hold in the zeitgeist thanks to the seriousness with which the US government has been revealed to take UFOs.
To that end, the response to the Pentagon’s confirmation has been largely curious rather than dismissive, although it has also spawned some thought pieces on the propriety of spending tax payer money on UFO research.
Amid the tidal wave of stories detailing Saturday’s Times piece, some intriguing new details about the Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program have come to light.
Perhaps most tantalizing is that the group produced a 490-page report on their research that was ostensibly issued to the Department of Defense.
It is unknown what insights were contained within the report as well as whether or not it will be made available to the public.
Equally remarkable were some new insights into the “metal alloys and other materials” that were purportedly recovered and studied by the AATIP.
One of the Times’ reporters who penned the story elaborated on that aspect of the research in an interview with MSNBC.
Ralph Blumenthal explained that this “material from these objects that is being studied so that scientists can try and figure out what accounts for their amazing properties.”
Asked what type of material it is, he replied, “they don’t know. They’re studying it, but it’s some kind of compound that they don’t recognize.”
How the story unfolds from here remains to be seen, but there is hope in the UFO disclosure community that the tremendous public interest in the Pentagon’s admission can create momentum towards more revelations from the government.
More cynical observers and seasoned UFO researchers are taking something of a ‘wait and see’ approach as the constantly-churning news cycle may push the phenomenon back into the periphery before any progress towards answers can be achieved as has happened many times in the past.
And some concerned conspiracy theorists are already crying foul and warning people that the ‘threat’ aspect of the AATIP’s mission may be used to fabricate a ‘hostile ET’ narrative should this truly be the start of some kind of UFO disclosure.
While that may turn out to be the case, the attitude of many who have longed for UFO answers seems to be that they’ll cross that proverbial bridge when they come to it so long as they receive confirmation about ETs.
Ultimately it may take some time before we know if the Pentagon’s admission was a watershed moment in the march towards UFO disclosure or simply another maddening misstep leading us even further into the dark. By contributor Jeffery Pritchett host of the Church of Mabus radio show.
NASA Shortlists Titan Quadcopter, Comet Sample-Return Concepts for 2020s Mission

The Dragon Titan mission concept, which would send a dual quadcopter to the Saturn moon, is one of two finalists for NASA's next New Frontiers mission to explore the solar system in the mid-2020s.

NASA has selected two ambitious finalists for its New Frontiers robotic mission program: a flying lander to soar over the surface of Saturn's big, potentially habitable moon Titan and a mission to bring back samples from a comet's icy nucleus.
Both missions, chosen from 12 proposals submitted in April, will receive funding to continue developing their concepts. In 2019, one of them will be selected to fly; it will lift off before the end of 2025. Whichever mission is chosen will follow in the footsteps of three impressive New Frontiers selections, all of which are currently operational: the New Horizons mission to Pluto; the Juno probe now orbiting Jupiter; and the OSIRIS-REx asteroid sample-return mission currently on its way to the asteroid Bennu.
Both of the finalist missions aim to return to locations in the solar system that have already been mapped thoroughly, but will reveal much more than previous missions ever could, the missions' principal investigators said during a news conference today (Dec. 20). [After Cassini: 14 Epic Planetary Science Missions to Get Excited About]
Dragonfly on Titan
The Dragonfly mission would send a flying, eight-rotored lander to explore Titan's hazy, hydrocarbon atmosphere and examine its surface, which is covered in methane and ethane seas and rivers. The exotic moon is very different from Earth, but its complex chemistry makes it a fascinating target to search for the development of life. The moon was previously mapped in detail by NASA's Cassini spacecraft, which flew by several times, and that mission's Huygens lander, which descended to Titan's surface in 2005.
With Dragonfly's detailed measurements of the moon's composition, "we can evaluate how far prebiotic chemistry has progressed in an environment we know has the ingredients for life — for water-based life, or potentially even hydrocarbon-based life," Elizabeth Turtle, a planetary scientist at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Maryland and principal investigator for Dragonfly, said during the news conference.
"Dragonfly would spend most of its time on the ground, but by being a rotorcraft, we're able to fly to multiple sites tens to hundreds of kilometers apart to be able to make these measurements in different geologic settings," she added.
The lander would draw power from a compact nuclear generator called an MMRTG, like the one that powers NASA's Mars rover Curiosity. Its spacecraft would be built by APL in partnership with Penn State University, whose lab has already built models that have gone on test flights, Turtle said.
After a launch in 2025, the mission would arrive at Titan in 2034 and explore for a few years. The mission wouldn't be limited by power or a dangerous environment, Turtle said.
A comet's icy prize
While Dragonfly would beam data home to Earth, the second mission, called Comet Astrobiology Exploration SAmple Return (CAESAR), would send icy material here: The mission would travel to the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, previously scoped out by Europe's Rosetta mission, and bring back at least 100 grams of sample from the comet's nucleus for analysis.
The Comet Astrobiology Exploration SAmple Return, or CEASAR, mission would collect a sample from the comet 67P/ Churyumov-Gerasimenko and return it to Earth in a re-entry capsule. The mission concept is one of two finalists for NASA's next New Frontiers mission to launch in the mid-2020s.

"Comets are among the most scientifically important objects in the solar system, but they're also among the most poorly understood," Steve Squyres, a researcher at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and principal investigator for CAESAR, said at the conference. "They're the most primitive building blocks of planets; they contain materials that date from the very earliest moments of solar system formation and even before. Comets were a source of water for the Earth's oceans, and critically they were a source of organic molecules that contributed to the origin of life."
CAESAR's samples, the first ever taken of a comet nucleus, would include the volatile ices from its surface that are comets' signature feature. The spacecraft would separate its sample into different compartments for volatile and nonvolatile components, and its return to Earth would involve ditching its heat shield as it landed, after entering the atmosphere, to avoid overheating the sample.
The sample capsule would be designed by JAXA, Japan's space agency, and would be based on its Hayabusa asteroid mission. The spacecraft would come from Orbital ATK and use solar-electric propulsion to make its way to the comet.
Rosetta's exploration of the comet makes the mission much less risky than visiting any other comet, said Squyres, who's also the principal investigator of NASA's Mars Exploration Rover mission, which landed the golf-cart-size robots Spirit and Opportunity on the Red Planet in 2004: "We're able to say to our engineers, OK, here's the size-frequency distribution of the particles on the surface, here's how strong the surface is; we can design for specific conditions that we know to exist."
"That dramatically improves the chances for success for a very difficult activity, which is grabbing a piece of a comet," he added.
The mission would return to Earth on Nov. 20, 2038, unprecedented samples in tow.
The CEASAR comet sample-return mission concept proposes returning a piece of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko to Earth 14 years after the mission's launch.

More to explore
In addition to the two finalists, NASA officials also chose to continue funding development for two missions, but not advance them to the next step of the process: Enceladus Life Signatures and Habitability (ELSAH), led by Chris McKay of NASA's Ames Research Center in California, and Venus In situ Composition Investigations (VICI), led by Lori Glaze at NASA's Goddard Research Center in Maryland.
Both missions had challenging technical aspects that needed more work, NASA officials said. For ELSAH, more work is needed to avoid contamination so the mission can better detect potential life on Saturn's icy moon. And for VICI, the challenge is to develop more technology to survive the extreme conditions on the surface of Venus, according to Jim Green, director of the planetary science division at NASA headquarters in Washington.
"The New Frontiers program is really the premiere program for our principal investigators, and indeed it's one of the most difficult programs to be selected for — we fly only about two of these types of missions per decade," Green said during the conference. "These are tremendously exciting missions."
After Dragonfly and CAESAR complete their Phase A concept studies, NASA officials will rigorously evaluate the missions to decide which will continue on with development and, eventually, liftoff.
"The tremendous success in this mission line comes from the fact that it's so hard to get to it, including that last step, at which, based on a very detailed analysis and a Phase A, the decision is made to take the mission that is most likely to be providing that excellent science and [be] successful overall," Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA's science mission directorate in Washington, said at the conference.

The existence of unidentified flying objects using technology more advanced than human capabilities has been proved “beyond reasonable doubt”, the former head of a secret US government programme has said.
Luis Elizondo, who quit as head of the Advanced Threat Identification Programme (AATIP) two months ago, warned nations now “had to be conscious” of the potential threat posed by UFOs.
Do UFOs exist? This former government employee thinks so
The unit, which the Department of Defence (DoD) insisted was terminated in 2012, produced documents that described sightings of aircraft travelling at extremely high speeds with no visible signs of propulsion.
“In my opinion, if this was a court of law, we have reached the point of ‘beyond reasonable doubt’. I hate to use the term UFO, but that’s what we’re looking at,” Mr Elizondo told The Telegraph.
“I think it’s pretty clear this is not us, and it’s not anyone else, so one has to ask the question where they’re from.”
Mr Elizondo told the newspaper there were geographical “hot spots” – sometimes around nuclear facilities and power plants – which emerged during AATIP’s investigations, as well as common factors between UFO sightings.
He said: “It was enough where we began to see trends and similarities in incidents. There were very distinct observables. Extreme manoeuvrability, hypersonic velocity without a sonic boom, speeds of 7,000mph to 8,000mph, no flight surfaces on the objects. A lot of this is backed with radar signal data, gun camera footage from aircraft, multiple witnesses.
“There was never any display of hostility but the way they manoeuvred, in ways no one else in the world had, you have to be conscious something could happen.”
It comes after secret footage released by the Department of Defence (DoD) showed US fighter jet pilots as they tracked an unidentified aerial object gliding above the Pacific Ocean in 2004. The object had been detected appearing suddenly at 80,000 feet by the USS Princeton, a naval cruiser, which had been tracking mysterious aircraft for two weeks.
Commander David Fravor told The New York Times the object was about 40ft long, had no plumes, wings or rotors, and outpaced their F-18s. It was big enough to churn the sea 50ft below it, he said.
Revealed: eerie UFO sightings recorded in MoD fi17show all
“I have no idea what I saw ... It accelerated like nothing I’ve ever seen,” he added, admitting he was “pretty weirded out”.
Mr Elizondo described Mr Fravor as a “national hero” for speaking out due to the “social stigma” attached to UFO sightings by military personnel.
He said he had no preconceived ideas when he first took charge of the unit, but came to realise there were “probably not any type of aircraft in any national inventory” similar to the sightings.
“I think it’s pretty clear it’s not us, and it’s not anyone else,” he added.
Mr Elizondo quit AATIP in October over what he believed was excessive secrecy surrounding the programme.
In a resignation letter to James Mattis, the US Defence Secretary, he wrote: “Why aren’t we spending more time and effort on this issue? There remains a vital need to ascertain capability and intent of these phenomena for the benefit of the armed forces and the nation.”
Experts warn there is usually a worldly explanation for apparent UFO sightings and caution that an absence of an explanation is not proof of aliens.
The Pentagon said AATIP closed five years ago when defence officials shifted funding to other priorities. But according to its backers, it remains in existence in some form.
“The AATIP ended in the 2012 timeframe,” Pentagon spokesperson Laura Ochoa said. “It was determined that there were other, higher priority issues that merited funding and it was in the best interest of the DoD to make a change,” she added.
Asked if the department continued to investigate sightings, she said: “The DoD takes seriously all threats and potential threats to our people, our assets, and our mission and takes action whenever credible information is developed.”

I received this UFO video recently. This was filmed on 21st October 2017.
Witness report:
I saw a huge white orb over my house in Long Beach CA. At first I spotted two objects crossing path’s with each other then focused on the larger one. As I zoomed in on my camera the UFO started ejecting smaller spheres into the atmosphere. The first ejection formed a triangular formation! As I kept filming the object started emitting tons of orbs falling in a steady stream from the main object. There were at least 40 smaller spheres emitted from the main UFO. Interestingly the smaller orbs were only visible through my infrared camera. This was recorded with my full spectrum Canon SX60 with a monopod in my backyard in Long Beach CA.
The first part of the video shows the raw footage and the analysis of the capture is presented in the end of the video.
The Universe is Far Bigger Than We Thought, and It Has 10x More Galaxies
It turns out the observable universe has at least 10 times more galaxies than the mid 1990s Hubble Deep Field images count of about 100 to 200 billion. The development of more advanced space telescopes in the future could unveil even more of the observable universe.
THE EXPANDED UNIVERSE
It turns out, what we call the observable universe — the part visible within our cosmological horizon, A.K.A. the final frontier — has at least 10 times more galaxies than the mid 1990s Hubble Deep Field images count of about 100 to 200 billion. But now the possible correct estimates have determined that the Universe holds more 2 trillion galaxies. (Before this calculation astronomers used to say “there could be more than 1 trillion galaxies in the universe.”)
Using collected data from various deep space images from the Hubble Space Telescope and other sources, an international team of scientists led by Christopher Conselice from the University of Nottingham, UK, created a 3D map of the known universe. Mathematical models were used to calculate for galaxies current telescopes cannot yet observe. These showed that, to make sense of the numbers and the maps, about 90% of galaxies are far, far away and too faint to be seen clearly. The map recreates, as accurately as possible, different times in the universe’s history as far back as 13 billion years in its past. Accordingly, when the universe was several billion years younger than today, it contained 10 more galaxies per unit volume. Galaxies decrease in number (and increase in size) as the billion years go by. “This gives us a verification of the so-called top-down formation of structure in the universe,” Conselice explains.
This helps answer Olbers’ Paradox (why the night sky remains dark, despite the many stars). The myriad of stars within the billions of galaxies invisible to the human eye because of redshifting of light, the universe’s dynamic nature, and intergalactic dust and gas absorbing light. This keeps the night sky mostly dark — keeping the night sky mostly dark. BIGGER SPACE FOR LIFE “It boggles the mind that over 90% of the galaxies in the universe have yet to be studied. Who knows what interesting properties we will find when we observe these galaxies with the next generation of telescopes,” explains Conselice about the far-reaching implications of the new results. The development of more advanced space telescopes in the future, beginning with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) in 2018, would certainly help us see the observable universe clearly. Who knows what remains lurking just by that expanded frontier of space. In any case, a larger known universe means an even wider space to accommodate the search for possible extraterrestrial life. Why not? Every time we think that we understand more of it, the universe seems to always surprise us with more. References: www.spacetelescope.org, Space

"The picture shows something quite different to what my eyes saw."
To her amazement when she enlarged the picture, the object appeared to resemble Han Solo's famous smuggling starship from the hit Star Wars movies, starring Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill.
It first appeared in the original Star Wars film in 1977, and re-appeared in The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, The Force Awakens, and The Last Jedi.

She sent the snap to investigator Philip Mantle, 54, of Pontefract, West Yorkshire, who said: "Although on the surface this photo doesn't look like much, when it has been enlarged it almost looks like the Millennium Falcon spaceship from Star Wars.
"Add to this the witnesses description you have to label this as a genuine UFO."
Photo analyst Jason Gleaves, an ex-RAF and BAE Airbus division employee in the UK, is baffled after studying the photo.
He said: "The witnesses said she was out alone walking her dog, the weather conditions had been fairly clear, and the sky had no other stars in view and no moon visible.
"The object appeared similar to a very brilliant white star to the naked eye and appeared travelling towards her. At first she thought it might have been a helicopter but couldn’t hear any distinguishing familiar sounds.

"Seconds after taking the original photograph the object shot straight up and then disappeared before she could get a second photograph. The image was taken using an apple iPhone 5 and the image transferred when a new phone was purchased.
"Upon analysing the original source image it appears to have defined structure. No known conventional aircraft can accelerate vertically from a standing hovering position without sound."
But this isn't the first time someone claims they have seen a Millennium Falcon-shaped object in the sky.
Last September a man and his girfriend believed they also said they saw a similar looking UFO in the sky near New York.
The man uploaded footage - filmed on August 4 - alongside the caption: "Me and my girlfriend were coming home at approx between 9 and 10 pm when we saw a light to our left.
"This thing was a complete lit surfaced craft.
"It wasn't blinking lights the entire surface of craft was lit up and glowing."
Aerospace Industry CEO and NASA Partner Claims There Are Aliens Living Among Us
According to Robert Bigelow, famous in the aerospace industry for the manufacture of inflatable modules such as those tested out at the International Space Station, there are extraterrestrial beings living among humans.
The NASA partner has said that he is ‘absolutely convinced’ aliens are living among humans on Earth.
During an interview with CBS’ “60 Minutes, he said:
“I’m absolutely convinced [that aliens exist],” he told reporter Lara Logan. “That’s all there is to it.”
“There has been and is an existing presence, an ET presence,” Mr. Bigelow said. “And I spent millions and millions and millions – I probably spent more as an individual than anybody else in the United States has ever spent on this subject.”
His company, Bigelow Aerospace, is developing expendable spacecraft for humans that can inflate and may provide much-needed shelter for future astronauts and colonists in space, and other planets.
When asked about the risks that this declaration could represent for his public image, Bigelow was blunt:
“I do not give a damn,” adding that nothing he thinks, nor what the rest of the world thinks, can change this reality.
He was also questioned about his intentions to travel to outer space to contact extraterrestrial civilizations, an opportunity he took advantage of to return to his first statements: “The aliens are right in front of our noses,” he reiterated.
Bigelow said he had close encounters, here on Earth, although he refused to provide further details.
The majority of Americans, 54 percent, are convinced there are intelligent aliens out there, capable of communicating with us, according to a survey done in 2015, by marketing research firm YouGov.
However, despite the fact that more than half of Americans are convinced that aliens are out there and visiting Earth, scientists like Seth Shostak — a senior astronomer at the SETI Institute reiterate there is no ‘solid evidence’ that these visitors exist.
Shostak said in an interview with Live Science, “Well, if you really do think they’re here, then why is it that the evidence is so poor; if the evidence was so good, we wouldn’t be arguing about it, we’d be investigating it,” Shostak said.
“We have satellites monitoring the Earth all the time. And they don’t see these guys, and yet they’re apparently so visible that a random guy like Bob Bigelow can see them.”
However, world-renowned astrophysicist Stephen Hawking disagrees with Shostak, at least partially, and says that not only are aliens out there, but that they could destroy humanity.
Professor Hawking is quoted saying: “To my mathematical brain, the numbers alone make thinking about aliens perfectly rational” (Source)
Several astronauts have also spoken out about Aliens and whether or not they are among us.
“…I’ve been asked (about UFOs) and I’ve said publicly I thought they (UFOs) were somebody else, some other civilization.” µ

Back in January 2007, I interviewed a man named Ray Boeche. Ray has an interesting background, as he is both a priest and a former state-director with MUFON, the Mutual UFO Network. At the time in question, I was thinking about writing a book on the infamous Rendlesham Forest UFO event of December 1980. I already knew that Ray had spoken to a couple of government insiders who had shared some pretty bizarre and amazing data with him on the incident. It was data that suggested at least a significant portion of the affair may have revolved around the use of sophisticated holograms, rather than anything extraterrestrial.
As I continued to chat with Ray, however, he told me something that I found even more intriguing. Ray revealed that his insider sources said they were attached to a classified program within the military-intelligence-government world that was seeking contact with what they termed “Non-Human Entities.” Or, NHEs for short. At first, the group suspected that the entities were extraterrestrial. As time went on, however, that theory was replaced by a far more controversial one. The group came to believe that they were dealing with nothing less than demonic entities from a literal Hell. But, apparently, that didn’t stop the group from trying to contact and interact with them.
Reportedly, and as a result of the group trying to work with demons, there were various deaths in the program (Ray told me that his sources personally showed him graphic photos of some of the dead), ill-health, and bizarre runs of bad luck. It was if the entire project was cursed. In fact, that is exactly what some of the members of the group came to believe.
When Ray told me all of this I found it far more fascinating than the Rendlesham idea. And, so, I decided to dig further into what was clearly a much stranger story, interviewing Ray at length and seeking out other sources, too. Most of the information I uncovered on this group – which used the nickname of “The Collins Elite” (I still don’t know its real name) – was published in my 2010 book, Final Events.
I don’t personally think that the NHEs are literal demons, but I do believe they are dangerous and manipulative entities from other realms of existence. However, for me the most notable and fascinating aspect of all this was the fact that some element of the U.S. Government was (and still is…) covertly funding the group, primarily those in government who adhere to the “Satanic UFO” angle. So, you may well ask, why am I mentioning all of this right now? I’ll tell you.
Take a look at this new interview with Senator Harry Reid (of the newly-outed UFO program story), in which George Knappbrings up the matter of those aforementioned “satanic UFOs,” and “fear based on religious beliefs” in relation to the intelligence community and UFOs. Knapp then brings up the matter of the UFO phenomenon being “evil.” Reid replies in an interesting way, as you will see. It’s only a short piece, about 5 minutes long, and the specific “satanic” angle comes towards the end.
All of this sounds very much like a brief reference to the Collins Elite and its work, beliefs and conclusions. Perhaps with a little bit more pushing, this new, ahem, revelation just might lead to the disclosure of more material and data on the Collins Elite and its work – most of which, from the 1990s onward, was connected to the human soul and an unclear agenda that the NHEs have for our souls. If you believe the NHEs are Satanic, of course.
The recent news wave of the so-called UFO Disclosure via the New York Times, Harry Reid and Tom Delonge, is probably nothing more than a smokescreen to move secretly highly advanced technology from their “black world’ into the “white world” to justify the missing money ($21 Trillion) at HUD, NASA & the Department of Defense, used to fund the secret black budget projects.
After they have cleared up their major problem of the missing trillions, they will continue with their soft UFO disclosure program in such a way, that due to the possible release of highly advanced technology, many people will not look surprised anymore.
While a disclosure will not come as a surprise for the hardcore believers, obviously it will be a managed UFO and Alien disclosure especially intended for those that don’t know the truth to lessen the overall panic and confusion that will surely take place once this event (major TV event) happens.
A follow-up of their UFO disclosure agenda will be a possible request to the Senate to increase the funding of their space defense program to develop their already existing technology in a way that if it would come to an “alien threat” they are prepared to protect the people around the world. (Remember Wernher von Braun’s statement: “Their last card will be a threat from space.”
In the following interview, Grant Cameron of Whitehouse UFO and Stephen Bassett of Paradigm Research Group discuss the true agenda as well as the current UFO related topics occurring via mainstream news.
Is That A Sleigh With Eight Reindeer Overhead? No… It’s A UFO
JAZZ SHAW
I’m not going to be the wet blanket who discounts sightings of Santa Claus this evening. (You can track Saint Nick’s progress at Norad to save yourself some time outdoors.) But as we wait for Christmas to arrive, I wanted to share some thoughts on what appears to be a subtle shift in the attitudes of other people looking up into the night skies.
For a long time now it’s been absolute taboo for anyone in the professional media (or any other “proper” social circles for that matter) to talk about the idea of intelligent extraterrestrial beings hanging around in the vicinity of the Earth except in jest. To do otherwise was an invitation to exile with the rest of the kooks, nuts and general conspiracy theorists. But after that curious report in the New York Times which I wrote about recently, I’m sensing a change.
People who would formerly never have uttered more than a few one-liners on the subject suddenly seem just a tad bit more open to at least suggesting… a possibility. We’ve been hearing stories and whispers from people who (sometimes at least) don’t really seem all that insane, claiming that they saw or experienced… something. Oh, to be sure, we all have to quickly add stern, grown-up caveats about how it could still be explained by something totally mundane. But there’s also been a muted “maybe” attached ever since that New York Times story came out, exposing the revelation that the government has indeed been up to… something related to the subject. One such story came from the completely sensible and practical Michael Brendan Dougherty at National Review.
Over time I put away Mysteries of the Unknown and tried to forget my nightmarish preoccupations with life out there. And on balance, I resolved to believe we probably are alone. I’m fine being the sort of person unsophisticated enough to believe humanity really is at the center of the great cosmic drama, that all this space, all those lights, all the cosmic flashes, and all this beautiful and scary mystery was daubed across the great blackness for us. In fact I think this is the more humble view, the one that accepts that humanity isn’t left to “socially construct” all the meaning for itself.
But once in a while, I think it is okay to take a second glance at the mysterious picture and think to yourself the words on that poster in Mulder’s office: “I want to believe.”
Dougherty isn’t the only one quoting Fox Mulder’s poster this month. Sure, there are still some dour individuals like Matthew Walther who sensibly remind us that too much obsession with what’s “out there” can lead us to ignore, neglect and further ruin the infinite mystery of what’s right in front of our eyes here on Earth. But then there are eminently respectable eggheads like Rafi Letzter, a science reporter at Scientific American (among other journals), who seems to have folded a slightly shifted attitude toward the extraterrestrial phenomenon into his baseline. He spends a great deal of time in this article criticizing the New York Times discussion of the “unusual alloys” allegedly being stockpiled in Las Vegas. This is because he feels that we already have a reliable grasp on the science of such things to the point where we could identify most any alloy we encounter or, if not, could define the properties of a new one quickly.
All of that is fair enough from the perspective of most metallurgists I suppose. But Letzter also tosses in the following paragraph, as if it were the most normal thing in the world. It’s the part where he outlines the three main “bombshells” in the New York Times article. (Emphasis added)
1. Many high-ranking people in the federal government believe aliens have visited planet Earth.
2. Military pilots have recorded videos of UFOs with capabilities that seem to outstrip all known human aircraft, changing direction and accelerating in ways no fighter jet or helicopter could ever accomplish.
3. In a group of buildings in Las Vegas, the government stockpiles alloys and other materials believed to be associated with UFOs.
Points one and two are weird, but not all that compelling on their own: The world already knew that plenty of smart folks believe in alien visitors, and that pilots sometimes encounter strange phenomena in the upper atmosphere – phenomena explained by entities other than space aliens, such as a weather balloon, a rocket launch or even a solar eruption.
That’s very strange to read in a scientific journal rather than, let’s say, the website of Mysterious Universe. The author blithely points out that “plenty of smart folks” are already believers (or at least those who truly want to believe) from the school of Fox Mulder. Not hopeless, borderline schizophrenics who have gone off their meds or con artists looking to pitch their next reality show. Smart people leading otherwise respectable lives.
Yes, he includes the still (mostly) mandatory caveat about how many sightings can be attributed to decidedly non-alien phenomena. But what we saw in the government video was something else. A fifty-foot long white tic tac with no wings, rotors or exhaust ports which was solid and could be tracked from multiple radar stations, dropping down from 80K feet to hover over the ocean, be filmed by (multiple) experienced Navy pilots, and then leave a pair of Super Hornets capable of doing nearly Mach 2 in the dust? That was no balloon, swamp gas, ball lightning or trick of the light, bending the image of a solar flare through some inversion layer in the atmosphere. So what was it? We don’t know yet, and we might not unless the military knows more and cares to tell us. It’s unidentified. Hence the acronym.
So if I see something in the sky tonight that I can’t identify, sure… I’ll leave room for the possibility that it might be Santa on his sleigh. Or, just perhaps, it might be something else. It’s a big, empty looking universe. But at least in the way it’s being treated in the “respectable” media now, it may have just gotten a tad bit smaller and perhaps even a bit more crowded. So do I Believe? Not yet, because I haven’t experienced anything like that myself thus far and, as Carl Sagan once said, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. But I’m at least willing to say in public that I really want to. There’s more room in our world for Fox Mulders now, as long as we keep a healthy supply of Dana Scullys around to peer review the findings.
Feds Reportedly Funded $22 Million On Secret UFO Program
The US government allegedly spent around $22 million funding in their apparent suspicion that the truth was out there. The New York Times reported that Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program remains in existence even though the Department of Defense decided to cancel the funding in 2012.
The program investigated sightings of fast moving aircraft with no visible sightings of propulsion or hovering aircraft with no apparent means of a lift, the Times reported. It also allegedly studied videos of encounters between American military plane and unknown objects.
According to the newspaper, the initial funding of the program came mainly at Sen. Harry Reid’s request. The senator is a Democrat from Nevada and has had a long-held interest in space phenomena, the Times reported. Just last week, Reid renewed his call for the federal government to fund UFO research in a tweet that linked to the report of the Times and borrowed the famous tagline from The X-Files “the truth is out there.”
In a subsequent tweet, Reid wrote if anyone says they have the answers, they are fooling themselves. He added that they do not know the answers, but they have plenty of evidence to support asking the questions. He stressed that this is about science and national security, and if the US does not take the lead in answering these questions, others will.
Reid, who retired from Congress this year, told the Times he was proud of the program saying that it is one of the good things he did in his congressional service. He believed he had done something that no one has done before.
UFO Recorded On Video Apparently Chasing A Passenger Jet Above Brit Town
A video clip has emerged showing a UFO that is apparently pursuing a plane in the skies over Liverpool before suddenly darting out of view.
Witnesses said that the saucer-shaped UFO looked like a glowing yellow star but bigger. The object reportedly followed the passenger jet’s path, dodging in and out of clouds.
The footage was recorded in 2015 but came to light again after YouTube channel secureteam10 uploaded it recently to the video-sharing site. It now has more than 200,000 views.
The voice of self-proclaimed UFO analyst Tyler can be heard in the background of the video, explaining what took place.
According to Tyler, the footage shows a glowing or reflective object described as an orb. He notes that it is not an aircraft or a drone.
He further says that the UFO is tagging along, following the passenger jet. Right at the end, Tyler says that the UFO takes a steep nosedive, totally changes direction and vanishes.
A local witness on the ground said that it was bright and white light throbbing and pulsating from the mysterious aerial object.
At first, he thought it was a plane but later realised that it could not be because it was stationary.
Filer’s Files #50 – 2017 A Merry UFO Christmas - PART I
In special reports, this week’s files cover: Senator Harry Reid Pushed Pentagon UFO Program, Data About Pentagon UFO Program, Evangelist Billy Graham on Angels and UFOs, and Into the Valley of Death.
Unidentified Aerial Phenomena sightings were reported over Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Minnesota, North Carolina, and Oklahoma.
Unidentified Aerial Phenomena sightings were reported over Canada, Kazakhstan, Mexico, and England in the United Kingdom.
The Filer Research Institute feels the scientific study of UFOs is for the benefit of humankind and is an important endeavor. The US Air Force investigated UFOs publicly for more than twenty years under Project Blue Book; and I continue this advanced research. I believe the God of the universe has spread life throughout the cosmos and UFO’s are visiting us in ever-increasing numbers.
I wish you all a most Merry Christmas and thanks for your many letters and friendship you have shared with me this past year.
Forward these files to your friends and neighbors.

Senator Harry Reid Pushed Pentagon UFO Program
Senator Harry Reid was behind the recently-revealed Pentagon UFO research program, retired Nevada senator Harry Reid spoke with George Knapp about the story that has spawned headlines around the world.
In his first televised interview on the topic, which was exclusively provided to KLAS, the former Senate Majority Leader was remarkably forthcoming about the program and how it developed.
Asked how he feels about the Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program being revealed to the public, Reid responded, “I’m very glad, because now we have scientific evidence.”
To that end, the retired Senator indicated to Knapp that, as opposed to how the program’s findings have been portrayed by some media outlets, the results of the study were impressive.
Reid also provided some clarification on how space entrepreneur Robert Bigelow was chosen to helm the AATIP.
He stressed that “we wanted to make sure people couldn’t complain about it that it was some sweetheart deal” and explained that the job was “put out to bid.”
Bigelow, in turn, was awarded the contract because he “gave the best cost” and was “willing to build the infrastructure and build everything on his own.”
According to Knapp’s report, the program boasted a team of 46 scientists and employed ‘rapid response teams’ to investigate UFO cases which came in to the group.
As to why the program ultimately shut down, Reid refuted reports that he had a hand in ending the AATIP, saying “I wish it were still going.”
On Wednesday, December 20, 2017, David Mathes wrote:
IMHO he offered a fresh face for an almost 70 year old narrative of seven talking points. IMHO no breakthrough in release of information and “no compelling evidence.” Just a broadcast reminder of hope for a slow news day during the Christmas season.
Note that the Obama administration opened the office and the Trump administration closed the office. Some folks would say both have been briefed but neither has high enough access to the files and current work. Your opinions will vary.
So far, only visual sighting evidence has been brought to our attention from him; from a scientific view, there is no physical evidence that he presented. So, don’t get too exuberant since this particular USG office is closed. It’s not the start of disclosure, just a reminder and reinforcement that *something is out there.*
The talking points of Mr. Elizondo are consistent with unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) aka UFO sightings. So far, he has not elaborated beyond things in the air. No USO. Nothing about platforms and vehicles in space. Nothing exotic like Krasnikov tubes or even warp drive. and nothing that goes beyond Paul Hill’s book Unconventional Flying Objects.
So let’s take a look at the seven claims Luis Elizondo puts forth about what his office investigated. His words are in quotes.
Electric, magnetic, gravitational (sic) and inertia forces must all be controlled for flight. These craft do it better than our rotating machinery and apparently have internally integrated the flight control for attitude and velocity/acceleration along a path. Field control externally is part of the answer. Internally, there may be moving energy states involving oscillating or circulation of mass states including solid, liquid, gas and plasma.
The lack of “any obvious forms of propulsion” (no prop or jet)
Current known advanced efforts in leading propulsion research (basic R&D, not product R&D)
“Extreme Maneuverability” – Inertia is the issue, especially angular momentum
The key question is how angular momentum is conserved. Keep in mind that multiple sources of thrust may be available and well coordinated. Also, relativistic level analysis (General relativity, not special
In atmosphere, velocities up to Mach 10 before ionization begins. By Mach 12 in the atmosphere, almost all known materials and coatings ionize and disperse.
“Positive lift” (hover and lift)
Note choice of “lift”. It’s not aerodynamic lift but vertical velocities of a craft from a hover position is what he is speaking of.

“Not known (by him) in foreign inventory” (that he is aware of)

Common technologies used to correlate and confirm visual sightings
Beyond radio, there were at least two technologies instrumental in his presentation: radar and electro-optics. Here is a brief summary.
Bob Tarantino ~1929 to 1935
Radar dates back to the 1929 for antiaircraft fire and even further into the 19th century for noticing interference above noise.
Radar developed rapidly after the invention of Cavity_magnetron in the late 1930s.
This device was used for radar then and emDrives now.
For velocities above Mach 3, at two ground air traffic radars are required to simply identify faster moving anythings. Over-the-horizon radars have at least 10x the distance capability of the ~250 mile range of ATC radars. So hypervelocity vehicles traveling Mach 5 or higher are an issue. In the atmosphere, 0he upper limit is above Mach 10 when everything unprotected ionizes. Mach 10 is about 7600 mph. Most sightings from ground are far less but greater than Mach 4 which is the limit of jet craft so far. Above Mach 5, one has to go to scramjet and rocket technologies or borrow something seen leaving the atmosphere.
Electro-optics refers to night vision. Germans and US in WW2 advanced sniperscope (Generation 0). US advances in 1950s and 60s.
AN/PVS-1 Starlight scope was in Viet Nam late 1966 amplified ambient light from moon typically (Generation 1).
The most important thing is that in the optical spectrum many of these observers cannot see aerial objects due to cloaking or fast movement. However, most craft have an infrared signature which is more difficult to mask or hide.
The Navy pilot provides an interesting view as if the vehicle were in a cloud chamber. The visual sighting suggests a field driven craft. Field drives us electromagnetic fields as well as gravitational AND inertia fields to control the craft especially in space but quite useful in earth’s atmosphere with no obvious control surfaces.
For attitude and path control of a craft without observable control surfaces for some time there has been in the works at leading aerospace manufacturers. The physics of ions (electrohydrodynamics) can be used to control lift, thrust, drag and even work against gravity. Fully developed, commercial planes could have a no-moving-parts control surfaces within the next ten years.
In order to detect most vehicles or platforms, IR and starlight-type scopes are very useful. In all cases, a thorough scan across the Em spectrum from DC to beyond light is required. A 3D scan of the acoustic spectrum is also required since reflections and refractions can create ghost imaging and hide actual sources of sounds.
We are at a time in history where we may see US or foreign countries produce a vehicle with the propulsion system only on the inside of the craft and generating fields outside the craft for deflection of particles and fields resulting in silent travel.
At the same time one has to be very skeptical of any pronouncement and understand clearly what not only is being said, but what is left unsaid.
For some, the hope of ETs lies in camera/movie evidence. While fascinating, given the graphics, imaging and special effects along with vehicles and platforms such as RC helicopters and quadcompters, this may not be enough in many cases and simply a form of entertaining game of “what’s that?”
As a result of technologies that can simulate, spoof or prank the observer such as CGI and projector systems, the bar of “compelling evidence” needs to be raised.
“Not in our inventory….There is very compelling evidence that we are not alone, whatever that means.” Thanks to Luis Elizondo, recent Head of Pentagon UFO program. On Wednesday, December 20, 2017, Thanks to Bruce Cornet and Bob Tarantino
Evangelist Billy Graham has had a ministry for 50 years to almost every US. President since Truman and was close to the Clinton’s. In his bestselling book, “Angels God’s Secret Agents” Graham states, “Some reputable scientists deny and others assert that UFOs do appear to people from time to time. Some scientists have reached the place where they think they can prove that these are possibly visitors from outer space.
Some Christian writers have speculated that UFOs could very well be a part of God’s angelic host who preside over the physical affairs of universal creation. While we cannot assert such a view with certainty, many people are now seeking some type of supernatural explanation for these phenomena. Nothing can hide the fact, however, that these unexplained events are occurring with greater frequency. (Page 21)
We must be aware that angels keep in close and vital contact with all that is happening on the earth. “The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of angels.” (Psalm 68) “His chariots of conveyance, which he sends for his friends, as he did for Elijah …his chariots of state, in the midst of which he shows his glory and power.“ Psalm 91. “For he will give his angels charge over you to guard you in all your ways.”
Dead Sea The priest-scientist ENOCH, is a prediluvian patriarch, one of the most famous and seminal characters of the previous time cycle. Father of Methuselah and great grandfather of Noah, Enoch is credited in the Bible as architect of the original Zion, the legendary “City of Yahweh”, as well as inventor of the alphabet and calendar. Enoch is also history’s first astronaut, who “is taken aloft by the Lord” and shown “the secrets of earth and heaven”. He returns to earth with the “weights and measures” for all humankind.
In the controversial Dead Sea Scrolls, revealing the lost Books Of Enoch removed from the Bible by early religious leaders, Enoch describes a wondrous civilization in the past, who misused the keys of higher knowledge and were unable to save themselves from the last cataclysm. Both literally and figuratively they lost the “keys”, they lost all higher knowledge. Yet, Enoch, along with many traditions, even the Mayan legend of Quetzalcoatl, promises a return of this knowledge at “The end of time”, the end of the present time cycle. Biblical Revelations promise “all will be revealed” at the end of the present world.
Reverend Barry Downing in his book states
The Bible is one of the best historical and technological books ever written about UFOs and their occupants.
Two thousand years ago Angels play a part in announcing Christmas for the first time.
This time of year we celebrate the birth of Christ who was announced by angels, and his star was seen in the east. In the first chapter of the New Testament we’re told the Holy Ghost visited the Virgin Mary and that an Angel of the Lord visited Joseph to announce the conception of Christ and later his birth.
The Bible states, “That night some shepherds were in the fields outside the village, guarding their flocks of sheep. Suddenly an angel appeared among them, and the landscape shone bright with the glory of the Lord. They were badly frightened, but the angel reassured them.”
“Don’t be afraid! I bring you the most joyful news ever announced, and it is for everyone! The Savior-yes the Messiah, the Lord-has been born tonight in Bethlehem! How will you recognize him? You will find a baby wrapped in a blanket, lying in a manager! Suddenly the angel was joined by a vast host of others–armies of heaven-praising God: Glory to God in the highest heaven, they sang, “and peace on earth for all those pleasing him.” When this great army of angels had returned again to heaven, the shepherds said to each other. “Come on! Let’s go to Bethlehem! Let’s see this wonderful thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about. (Luke 2) The armies of heaven may describe UFOs that are often seen in large numbers.
When Jesus is born the Magi or Wise Men from the East follow a star and are able to find the baby Jesus. Johannes Kepler discovered the math for the movement of the stars and planets and was unable to find the Star of Bethlehem followed by the Wiseman. Technically a star is very difficult to follow because stars appear to move as the world turns on its axis. It is more likely that the star was an unidentified light hovering high in the sky that according to scripture changed direction to bring the Wise Men to the birth place.
Kenneth Larson writes, “In the Bible, the actual scriptures state that the “Star of Bethlehem” appeared in the eastern sky and led the wise men westward to Jerusalem. While at Jerusalem, the star hovered overhead and then when the wise men appeared from the building the star made a sharp 90-degree turn and led the wise men four miles to the birth of Jesus Christ in the manger at Bethlehem.”
Most of the descriptions of Angels compares nicely with our available data of at least one group of the alien visitors. In Genesis, the first book of the Bible and Torah; Angels are described as having bodies with parts such as hands, feet, eyes, head, voices, mouths, hair, faces and other human body parts.
Apparently millions have believed and each year we celebrate the birth of Christ at Christmas that occurred some 2017 years ago. If we believe His message we are promised ever-lasting life. Of course, if the promise is untrue, we will all die. However, if it is true, I’ll meet you in Heaven! Merry Christmas
The Bible and Unidentified Flying Objects at Christmas
At Christmas time it would be interesting to review some of the teachings of the Bible because I feel it is one of the most important books that describe UFOs, and their occupants who give us information on why they are here. The Bible states, “In the beginning god created the heaven and Earth and made man in his image,” that includes a mortal body and soul and spirit that is immortal. The term soul is used 754 times in the Bible and we’re told the soul is the invisible spiritual part of man, a living organism.
The Bible claims each person has a soul, a life force that continues after death. At the time we take our last breath the soul or spirit leaves the body and is taken to Heaven by Angels perhaps using UFOs.
My brother who was thought dead was taken to the hospital by ambulance and brought back to life in the emergency room. He claims to have observed his body from above and saw the ambulance ride and the Doctors working on him. Later he returned to his body to live again.
Many medical personnel claim to have seen the spirit leave the body at the time the physical body dies. My wife who was helping her brother walk at the time of his death, she felt his body become lighter as his spirit left, followed by his full weight.
The Bible claims that the angels are sent by the Father in Heaven who promises the greatest gift of all, ‘eternal life.’ We can speculate at this time of year that the religious stories of the past are related to the signs and wonders we see in our skies now. I’ve studied the Bible, the Torah, the Koran, the Book of Mormon and many other ancient writings that claim angels exist and are messengers of God bringing scriptures.
Into the Valley of Death
During the last two weeks I have been in the hospital with two operations to improve the arteries around my heart and I’m now on the road to rapid recovery. If there are some spelling errors please excuse since the the procedures damaged my eye sight, but I’m scheduled for cataract surgery at the beginning of the year.
During my operation I was taken to the basement of Lourdes Hospital away from all other operating rooms. As I was wheeled into the operating room a black person six foot eight inches tall gave me a little water for my dry mouth. A giant of man dressed in medical clothes said to the surgical team, I’m sorry but we just lost Mary and I was next. I felt my arms and legs were tied down and I really couldn’t move.
The Doctor stated I need an #9 scalpel and was given pain medication. I was very apprehensive as I entered a bright light and taken to an Egyptian like room where my soul was being weighed to determine if I should live or die. I was found probably not worth saving. A voice of an angel or guardian spoke on my behalf claiming I could still do great good on earth, save lives, with his web site, movies. Etc.
I stated much more needs to learned about UFOs, and I can help stop the killing of thousands caused by illegal drugs. I traveled in space and time in a dream world and awoke in my Intensive Care Room. So I guess you arec stuck with me for a while.
“Pilots and astronauts who have seen UFOs, often claim the UFO is the size of an aircraft carrier. There is no question in my mind that they exist. I don’t know for certain what UFOs are, who is flying them, but something is flying in our skies. They could be a natural phenomenon not understood. Several times while in Air Force intelligence, I briefed UFOs to numerous general officers. I attempted to obtain documentation and films of UFOs from the Air Force. I was told the evidence was there with safes full of evidence, but I needed the signature of my four star commanding general to see it. I have a dozens of friends who also know they exist, and seen various types of evidence. I’m part of the Disclosure Project that includes over one hundred military and government personnel ready to testify to Congress about the phenomenon.”

UFO Sightings in the United States
Arizona Light
Deer Valley— I went to the park over in Deer Valley (Paseo Highlands Park) to get some fresh air and do some reading on December 20, 2017. I noticed a unusual cloud cover and a rainbow looking reflection in the sky. I captured a couple photos to show my wife the amazing sky this evening in Phoenix. After viewing the first picture I noticed an object in the picture that I could not see with my eyes, so I took a couple more. The UFO started moving higher out of sight after a few minutes. I did not alert anyone in the park because the object moved out of sight and was not visible with the eyes. Thanks to MUFON CMS

California Object
Manteca— Facing southwest I felt something watching us on December 16, 2017. It was like a heaviness above us. I saw a bright light like a diamond twinkling. being stationary just hovering then it moved slightly enough to convince me it wasn’t a natural thing because I was thinking it was just a star. I ran home took photos didn’t look at them for 3 days . Thinking that it wouldn’t show up much with cell camera. I saw a glowing dot only then I zoomed in and I was stunned. I could tell it had white lights and I think one red. Then I noticed it had a few friends cuz I saw several object that looked identical just hovering but I could see them moving slightly. Today Dec 20, 2017 I counted 6-10 craft all identical where I couldn’t describe much but I could tell they were not of this realm. Thanks to MUFON CMS

keechobee — At 05:19 PM, on December 1, 2017, I was at home and received a text from a relative asking me to watch a snap they just sent which I did. Two videos were then sent to me by text. I went outside with binoculars to look eastward in the direction they were seen. Their house is about two miles East of mine. I also saw an object that I couldn’t identify as an aircraft. My first thoughts were that the object(s) were ultralights. The object flew to the north and out of view then south and out of view. I saw an object much higher going north which went out of sight. After studying the videos I could not conclude that they were a known type of aircraft or even that they were of the same object. Thanks to MUFON CMS
Georgia Light
Metter — I observe many strange craft and orbs here in southeast Georgia. We are on a military flight path that a lot of exercises are performed as on February 2, 2017. But I first started noticing these unusual lights on random nights. I was usually alerted by the animals making noise as like they’re sending out a warning. This particular craft that is in this pic appears to be the shape of a horseshoe. With the recent video I saw showing something similar, I thought I would submit this pic finally. I have seen many more extraordinary things in this area; way to many to discuss at one time. These UFOs are here and are real. Thanks to MUFON CMS
Illinois Light
Lakemoor — We were sitting at a stoplight at Route 120 and Darrell Road in Lakemoor Il. heading west on November 11, 2017. Saw 4 bright lights hovering diagonally. One light descended behind some trees. Thought it looked strange so my girlfriend took a picture. The 1st 2 pics didn’t show anything. The 3rd picture showed the 4 diagonal lights and when we zoomed in on the picture, we saw the huge triangle ship with all the lights. We pulled over to get another picture and they all disappeared and were gone. Thanks to MUFON CMS
Minnesota Unknown
Inver Grove Heights — traveling on 55 east I got off the Barnes Avenue exit on September 8, 2017. As I am exiting I see a Black object with a bright orange light traveling East getting ready to cross the Barnes ave bridge. Once I am on the bridge I stop to take pictures and video of the object. It crosses highway 52 still traveling East then passing about 20 feet from a water tower on the other side of the highway. Then traveling on 494 East Crossing the Wakota Bridge I see to my right the object flying over buildings now traveling more Northeast Crossing the Mississippi River. As I continued to travel on 694 North I lose track of the object and see a helicopter that is now running parallel to me as I travel 694 for about a mile and then I don’t see it anymore. This is a video I took a few days ago. I live in Robeson County, Maxton NC. This video is of lights that stayed in the same spot never moving. A few nights later I was on the phone to my boyfriend and saw the same light in the same patch of sky. This time the lights started darting not crazy across the sky, but from the spot it was to an inch or two above or below or side to side of it’s position. I apologize for the poor quality as the video was shot with my cell phone. Thanks to William Puckett, Director Http://www.UFOsnw.com
Oklahoma Object
Observing the December 3rd, 2 017 supermoon I noticed object that was brighter than the moon at the 10 o’clock position.
Took photo and zoomed in as close as I could and noticed 5 diamond/star shaped lights in a perfect line but did not flicker like a star.

Yellowknife— My auntie was driving when I looked out my window and saw a bunch of white lights in the sky appear on December 3, 2017. We thought it was a airplane or helicopter. But then the lights disappeared and one beamed back in the sky so we pulled over and took pictures. But then a hovering thing started changing colours. I felt scared and curious but my auntie started driving and I lost sight of the UFO. Thanks to MUFON CMS
Kazakhstan Light
Stem Reap — I add a compilation of the photos, i work with aviation and it is not an airplane or helicopter. Objects connect in the sky and after move to the horizon. Our government believes open contact with aliens is imminent and by being the first nation to specifically create such facilities they are convinced they will reap enormous financial and economic rewards. The Kazakhstan Government also see this as a chance to demonstrate their nation’s forward thinking.. Thanks to MUFON CMS
Mexico Disc
Teotihuacan— We went with my wife on vacation to Mexico City on December 13; 2017. As usual, we took pictures and we recorded a couple of videos of the route we made in the pyramids. Until then we had not seen anything. The next night we started to organize the photos we had of the visit and we observed an anomaly on the pyramid of the citadel; I made two shots of those in an interval of two seconds. We started to review the videos and in 3 of them the UFOs move at an impossible speed for the technology that we currently have. You can see that they are in disk form, the video at normal speed is almost imperceptible but when you see them in slow motion they look the right way. No plane overflew the place, Photo 1 shows that we are in the Citadel, behind the Pyramid of the Feathered Serpent, and on the pyramid appears an object in the form of anchor or boat, on the one kind of T, it seems to be turning around. Nottingham — My daughter, who lives in Nottingham, was looking at the evening sky late August this year 2017, she just took the photo and didn’t notice the object at the time. Later when looking at it she noticed the object to the right of the photo. it is in the sky in the early evening. I don’t think it is a reflection of any lamp inside of the bedroom on the window pane. It is a large metallic looking ring emitting a lot of light from the top. it is quite bright.

Did the United States keep crashed UFO remains stored away in modified buildings in Las Vegas?
“The company [involved in the DOD research] modified buildings in Las Vegas for the storage of metal alloys and other materials that … program contractors said had been recovered from unidentified aerial phenomena. Researchers also studied people who said they had experienced physical effects from encounters with the objects and examined them for any physiological changes. In addition, researchers spoke to military service members who had reported sightings of strange aircraft.”
Is UFO disclosure finally upon us? Are we really being lied to about UFO’s? And is there a slight possibility that the US government is actually stockpiling materials—belonging to Alien technology—in building in Nevada that scientists cannot identify?
Ever since Bob Lazar, an alleged scientist who worked in Area 51, reassured to the general public that there were extraterrestrial spacecraft recovered from which “reverse engineering” was performed, UFO scholars have accused the US government of keeping from society evidence we are not alone in the universe, and hiding in secret hangars evidence of aliens.
Now, after the recent news about a secret program that existed to study the UFO Phenomenon, the pot continues to uncover.
A fighter Jet chasing a UFO.
by RussellWSanders
In December of 2017, the New York Times published a shocking story that exposed how the Department of Defense (DoD) of the United States kept secret, from 2007 to 2012, a program with a budget of 22 million dollars to investigate UFOs.
From the published text, three points clearly stand out:
Countless highly-ranked individuals in the federal government know that UFOs are real and that aliens have visited our planet.
Military pilots have managed to record UFO encounters which show flying objects that display capabilities unlike any man-made vehicle in existence today.
In a series of buildings located in Las Vegas, the U.S. government stores the remains of alien technology and materials that are believed to come from, or are related to UFOs.
Despite the fact that the first two points mentioned above received an ample amount of coverage in media, the third—and perhaps most important—point was nearly ignored completely, the reason why one of the authors of the article published by the Times, recalled it in a television interview seen in the video below.
“They have in their possession, as we reported in the article, several materials belonging to these objects [the UFOs]. They have been studied by our scientists to learn more about their amazing properties and technology, “says Ralph Blumenthal in the interview conducted on the MSNBC news channel.
Mr. Blumenthal said the DoD “do not know” what the materials are made of.
“It’s some sort of compound they do not recognize,” he added.
According to the NY Times article;
While there is much information about the DOD research and the objects themselves, any questions remain in the open.
What type of metal alloys are we exactly talking about? What are the materials with exotic properties? At this point, it is noteworthy to mention the Roswell incident and what Bill Jr., son of one of the main witnesses (Mac Brazel) said to have seen from the alleged crash site: fragments of a strange material that, despite being “thin as a leaf”, was impossible to break, cut or burn and had the property to return to its original state.
This raises other questions; Are these types of materials those that are being kept away in the secret facilities spread across Las Vegas? And, is it possible that the study of these exotic materials may have contributed to our technological boom in recent decades?
Boeing today released a photo of its MQ-25 Stingray prototype, an unmanned carrier-based tanker aircraft. The U.S. Navy is looking for an unmanned tanker that can operate with existing carrier catapult launch and recovery systems. The MQ-25 will fly missions to extend the range of Navy F/A-18 Super Hornets, EA-18G Growlers, and F-35C Lightning II fighters.
A final request for proposals (RFP) was issued by the Navy in October, and proposals are officially due January 3, 2018. In addition to Boeing's bid, Lockheed Martin is expected to submit a proposal for the MQ-25 contract. General Atomics, which builds the MQ-1 Predator and MQ-9 Reaper military drones, will also submit a bid, having revealed artist concepts of its tanker drone design in October shortly after the RFP was announced.
“Boeing has been delivering carrier aircraft to the Navy for almost 90 years,” said Don Gaddis, head of the refueling system program at Boeing’s Phantom Works, in a press release. “Our expertise gives us confidence in our approach. We will be ready for flight testing when the engineering and manufacturing development contract is awarded.”
Boeing's MQ-25 prototype will undergo additional engine tests before flight ramp and deck handling demonstrations that will be conducted on an aircraft carrier early next year. After the handling demonstrations, Boeing will need to launch the MQ-25 off a carrier deck for its first flight.
The image released by Boeing reveals robust landing gear for carrier operations and possibly a low-observable design, although stealth is not one of the primary requirements for the drone tanker. The Navy, however, has been researching a multitude of carrier-launched aerial drone systems for years, from surveillance to electronic warfare to strike operations. If Boeing secures the contract for the MQ-25 tanker, they could have a leg up for future Navy contracts for additional carrier-launched drone aircraft.
It is not clear whether the MQ-25 prototype from Boeing Phantom Works was designed with future drone configurations in mind. More information and photos of Boeing's MQ-25 should become available in the coming months as the company conducts additional tests. For now, we are just waiting to see an actual photo of General Dynamic's drone tanker, and of course, to see what Skunk Works has been busy cooking up for the competition.
Mainstream news outlets jumped into the deep end of Billy Cox's Great Taboo. The New York Times, Politico and The Washington Post are among those reporting to have confirmed that Luis Elizondo, a career intelligence officer formerly with the Defense Department and currently of Team DeLonge, headed a UFO investigation project as claimed. The Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program, reportedly operational from no less than 2007 to 2012, was financed through black funding which included money funneled to Bigelow Aerospace, owned by longtime UFO enthusiast and controversial philanthropist Robert Bigelow. The remarkable circumstances published included the claim, "Under Mr. Bigelow’s direction, the company modified buildings in Las Vegas for the storage of metal alloys and other materials that Mr. Elizondo and program contractors said had been recovered from unidentified aerial phenomena."
If you're interested in UFOs, you are justified in sitting up and taking note. If you've been pulling for DeLonge, congratulations. A little chest beating is in order. The current revelations don't excuse his wild and unsupported claims about an alien presence, but he apparently has, in fact, been in contact with an intelligence community member who actually had something to say, or at least more to say than the average self-proclaimed insider. That stated, questions involve how and why it was orchestrated. It is imperative to proceed cautiously and critically. I encourage trying to refrain from premature conclusions and confirmation bias. While some long frustrated ufology activists have indeed succeeded in making some noise, it is important to remember a well executed public relations campaign does not an established fact make. It is imperative the reporters and key players produce materials fully supporting their claims else risk driving yet another stake of cynicism squarely through the heart of open mindedness. In this post let's cautiously explorewhere these stories lead us, both past and present. Taxpayer Funds For starters, let's consider the reported UFO hunting initiative was a taxpayer-supported program. I asked Sharon Weinberger via email if she cared to provide comment for this blog post. She is Executive Editor at Foreign Policy and author of the nonfiction book, Imaginary Weapons: A Journey Through the Pentagon's Scientific Underworld, as well as the recent bestseller, The Imagineers of War: The Untold Story of DARPA, the Pentagon Agency That Changed the World. "As a long-time advocate of government transparency, I think the only thing I have to say at the moment is that such programs, if pursued, must be able to stand up to public scrutiny," Weinberger explained. "The fact that we didn't know about this program until long after it was over, even though it was unclassified, reflects a more fundamental problem at work here. Taxpayers deserve to know their money is being spent." The reported distribution of funds under the direction of the Department of Defense potentially opens the circumstances up to FOIA inquiries. The news stories alone offer a substantial number of FOIA opportunities, including requesting for public verification and review the documents and communications provided to the reporters. Obviously, circumstances surrounding the alleged physical evidence stored in modified buildings per Bigelow's oversight should be scrutinized at length, among other items referenced.
Robert Bigelow
It was further reported via the Times, "Researchers also studied people who said they had experienced physical effects from encounters with the objects and examined them for any physiological changes." I encourage submitting FOIA requests on such research, who specifically did it, the exact funding trail involved, the resulting dissemination of data, and similar details. For instance, who were the "program contractors" collecting material recovered from unidentified aerial phenomena? With what organization(s), exactly? What were the specific circumstances? Dr. Tyler Kokjohn holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and is a Professor of Microbiology at Midwestern University Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has shown a willingness to address UFO-related topics in reasoned manners, applying his expertise to issues often debated within the community.
In response to request for comment on the UFO-Pentagon news, the doctor provided the following:
Helene Cooper et al. have reported a remarkable story about an obscure Defense Department ‘black money’ project, the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (1). This 5 year, multi-million dollar effort to investigate UFO reports was funded at the request of Senator Harry Reid supported by two (now deceased) Senate colleagues. Financial support for the earmark program was terminated in 2012 when officials determined these funds should be directed to ‘higher priority issues’ (2). Whether the work still continues somewhere within the Department of Defense is unclear (2).
This news story has exposed a secret treasure trove of information for follow-up investigations. It appears most of the money was channeled to an aerospace research company owned by Robert Bigelow. Researchers interviewed military personnel who reported UFO sightings and conducted medical examinations of subjects experiencing physical manifestations linked to UFO incidents. In addition, Bigelow Aerospace customized buildings in Las Vegas to store metal and other materials recovered from UFO encounters.
The story by Cooper et al. (1) was solid journalism in that it provided information acquired from several persons with direct involvement in the events. However, one facet of the reporting inadvertently reveals something odd; the scientist and engineer contacted for responses, although highly expert, did not appear to have direct knowledge of the work or to have been given access to any results/data. Accordingly, their responses were generic doubts about the UFO subject, not specific critiques of the actual work itself. This seems strange because Bigelow Aerospace solicited research proposals for the effort and hired people to conduct the work. Somehow the people best able to comment regarding the scientific quality of the investigations and the significance of the results obtained were mostly overlooked.
For somewhere between 5-10 years, data and physical evidence gathered under the auspices of the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program has been hidden from the public. Perhaps the unclassified portions of the scientific work performed by Bigelow Aerospace will now be forthcoming to enable evaluations by independent experts. This was a taxpayer-supported program and some extraordinary claims are being made about the findings in public. It will be unfortunate if investigators are forced to resort to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to discover what was done in this program. However, because it appears requests for research proposals/assistance were issued by Bigelow Aerospace, investigators may be able to pry loose some of the information if it becomes necessary.
The information provided in the New York Times story suggests that opinions as to what was discovered and its significance varied sharply. Senator Reid felt that the findings were so momentous the program needed a higher level of security to restrict access. A director’s summary alleged science fiction had become science fact and the U.S. could not defend itself against some of the technologies discovered. It will be fascinating to see how Defense Department officials receiving such statements weighed them against the hard data to reach a decision that other priorities were more pressing.
Because some of the principals involved in overseeing the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program have been speaking about it openly and exploiting their experiences in a commercial venture, it seems unlikely any entity could now withhold all scientific results by claiming the information is classified. Does Bigelow Aerospace hold physical evidence proving UFOs are real? Do the data prove claims the phenomena did not originate from any country? From a scientific perspective the most fascinating question is this - why would any organization with convincing, apparently unclassified, proof of UFO technologies and their origins keep it secret? Maybe an independent scientific inspection of the evidence will confirm why secret earmark programs are not always good ideas. Evaluating the scientific evidence in hand and comparing it to some remarkable claims promises to be a fascinating exercise.

MUFON In 2009 the Mutual UFO Network entered into an ill fated collaboration initiated by the then-newly launched Bigelow Aerospace Advanced Space Studies. The MUFON-BAASS venture was almost certainly a part of the now revealed Pentagon-funded Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program, if not the primary arm of the operation. At the time, MUFON attempted to coordinate widespread training for field investigators described as a rapid response team. The organization soon found itself marred in turmoil which included a large scale exodus of personnel. Public relations were extremely strained as revolving door leadership saw a run of four executive directors in as many years. A lack of organizational transparency was a common complaint, which included the public nonprofit corporation's failure to provide details of funding sources, so before we join the capital-D disclosure celebration, let's consider how the players conducted their affairs up to this point. James Carrion served as Executive Director of MUFON from 2006 to 2009. He is a former intelligence analyst and UFO writer/researcher who pursues forensic historic analysis.
In response to request for comment for this post, Carrion provided the following contribution:
In the fall of 2008, Robert Bigelow approached MUFON with an extraordinary business proposal – a subcontract from a Bigelow subsidiary called Bigelow Aerospace Advanced Space Studies, LLC (BAASS) for MUFON UFO investigative services. The MUFON Board signed non-disclosure agreements and the negotiations began.
BAASS essentially wanted MUFON’s field investigators to conduct quality investigations of significant UFO cases, no expense spared, and then to feed those investigations to BAASS scientists. BAASS’ alleged goal for this endeavor was to acquire UFO super technology and then to file patents on this technology. The contract was signed in the spring of 2009 and ran for only a few months before the partnership withered and fell apart towards the end of the year.
Before, during and after this partnership, only one MUFON Board member, former MUFON International Director, John Schuessler, was ever made privy to the money source for the Bigelow subcontract. Now it is public knowledge, courtesy of investigative journalists, that this money came from a Pentagon black budget project.
What are we to make of this public disclosure of the Pentagon’s renewed forage into UFO investigation? If we look back in history when UFOs first hit the mass consciousness in 1947, the nascent U.S. Air Force investigated UFOs through a number of projects culminating in the last official investigation, Project Bluebook, which was killed off in 1969. That is, count it, 22 years of taxpayer dollars spent in the pursuit of “something” that was declared a non-threat to national security.
Fast forward to 2007 and the Pentagon’s Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP) – funded allegedly at the behest of a politician and a billionaire who had a common interest in the phenomenon. Are we expected to believe that the Pentagon let almost 40 years pass in-between its investigations before deciding that UFOs were a potential threat? Did the billions of dollars spent prior on air defense against a Soviet, Chinese or rogue nation nuclear attack, or tracking the most minute space junk, simply not detect these UFO threats beforehand?
And is black budget money given out freely at the whim of any politician who wants to study their eccentric interests? Is there a black project currently looking into uncovering Barack Obama’s “real” birth certificate, or whether Ted Cruz’s father was really involved in the JFK assassination or one that is trying to determine how hundreds of thousands of Americans donned an invisibility cloak at the 2017 Presidential inauguration?
And will the disclosure of AATIP just spawn countless other conspiracy theories, like perhaps AATIP is just a shade of gray and that other competing and unacknowledged UFO projects are hidden even deeper in the murky world of black projects?
Today when science is sadly under attack, previously accepted facts take second place to rumor, innuendo and fantasy, and where the alleged leader of the free world spins daily conspiracies and has a severe allergy to the truth, what are we really to make of the Pentagon investigating what it has consistently called a nothing burger? Even after the AATIP was disclosed, some of the data it collected or is still collecting remains classified. Does that mean the American public will AGAIN only get half of the truth?
The question that every American should be asking their elected officials is what did the 22 million taxpayer dollars, earmarked for this black budget UFO investigation project, really buy them and how soon can we the people examine the ENTIRE merchandise? Even more importantly for Congress to investigate is the decision making rationale that led up to this project and why almost 40 years lapsed before UFOs were declared objects non grata in American airspace.
What an in-depth Congressional investigation may reveal is a deeper truth – one that as Sir Winston Churchill once described the former Soviet Union – is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. In reality, we are all tired of enigmas, mysteries and riddles – what Americans really want, indeed what the whole world wants, is just the ultimate truth, whatever that may be.
The MUFON-BAASS train wreck was not the first time activities involving the nonprofit, Bigelow, and cash accountability came under fire. At the turn of the century news leaked of what would become known as the Carpenter Affair. It was soon confirmed that John Carpenter, while serving as MUFON Director of Abduction Research, secretly provided Robert Bigelow data from case files of some 140 "alien abductees" for a reported $14,000. John Carpenter is among those who confirmed what he termed the discreet sharing of data, which reportedly included copies of recordings of hypnosis sessions conducted with the individuals. Carpenter explained during a 2012 email exchange that he confidentially provided the data to Bigelow for review by Bigelow and colleagues at the now dissolved Bigelow-founded National Institute for Discovery Science. Personnel of the Institute included Col. John Alexander, who, according to John Velez via UFO UpDates List in 2000, confirmed what Velez termed the "file sale," as did MUFON then-Executive Director Walt Andrus and Bigelow himself. An excerpt from my 2013 blog post, The Carpenter Affair: For the Record:
The 140 people in question, who had sought support from Carpenter and MUFON, were not informed of the arrangement between Carpenter and Bigelow. The specific details of the primary motives and agendas behind the circumstances remain unclear. "We may never know," Elizabeth Chavez Carpenter, former wife of John Carpenter and one of the 140, reflected during a December, 2013, telephone conversation. A lack of accountability is disappointingly common within the UFO community. Its members, often eager for new and intriguing information, frequently fail to question the bookkeeping of the messenger if they support the message. A 1996 AP article which explored Bigelow's interests in the Skinwalker Ranch reported that Bigelow declined to be interviewed, while NIDS employee John Alexander stated details would not be provided of how or why research was being conducted. The article further indicated former ranch owner Terry Sherman, employed by Bigelow to maintain the property, chose not to comment because Bigelow had him sign a nondisclosure agreement. Public trust of MUFON and its collaborators was substantially diminished due to a lack of accountability for the Ambient Monitoring Project. In 2008, long time MUFON and ufology staple Tom Deuley wrote in the MUFON UFO Journal how the approximately ten year-long effort was coming to fruition. Deuley explained funding was in hand to complete analysis already begun on data obtained from instruments placed in the homes of reported alien abductees. The idea was to monitor the environment and discern what, if anything, was physically taking place during alleged abductions. Much to the disappointment of a community eager to hear what happened, no conclusions were ever produced. Explanations were offered by a variety of involved parties as to why no final project report or even summary was published, all of which were inadequate, often contradictory to one another, and sorely lacking in professionalism. The failed project involved a collaboration between some UFO organizations, including the Fund for UFO Research, which Deuley suggested in his 2008 article was a substantial influence. A review of the circumstances revealed, per the FUFOR website circa 1993, "the Fund joined with the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) and the Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS) to form the UFO Research Coalition to conduct major projects, at the suggestion of Las Vegas builder Robert Bigelow, who promised major funding." By 1994, it was further reported via the website, "disagreement over control of the UFO Research Coalition lead to a complete break with Robert Bigelow. Laurance Rockefeller appeared on the scene, ready to fund major projects through his intermediary, Mrs. Marie 'Bootsie' Gailbreath." Further research and communications with men listed as members of boards of directors of the involved nonprofit corporations often produced the same inconsistent statements as made publicly, if not implying worse. A 2008 email inquiry to astrophysicist Dr. Richard Henry, listed at the time as a FUFOR board member on the org's website, resulted in the doctor responding he had not heard from FUFOR "in ages." "Let me know if you find out anything!" he added. Bottom Line There is no substitute for an established fact, and facts cannot be established absent evidence available for public review. Some of the material supplied to those reporting on the UFO-Pentagon story, i.e., the DeLonge project, is relevant and offers some value as contributions to the UFO genre. The videos, for example, embody what, by definition, are UFOs. They deserve ample examination by qualified experts. That stated, the public indeed has a valid complaint when taxpayer funds are used to obtain alleged materials that, as of this writing, are not readily available for review. The public also has a valid complaint when public nonprofit corporations, which enjoy tax benefits and offer tax deductions for donors, fail to adequately report their financial activities and agendas. What's more, some of the parties involved in the Pentagon saga have not only shown a willingness to avert from disclosing details of their activities, but an outright effort to conceal them. In doing so, the identities of funding entities have been concealed, financial reporting has been inadequate, and notification of the circumstances to involved parties has, at times, been nonexistent. Just because someone is an intelligence community asset doesn't make them inherently dishonest or nefarious. There are any number of people who assist the U.S. intelligence services in honorable manners. A primary point, as I see it, is that with all the half-truths, lack of accountability, and direct lies within the UFO community, it is impossible to discern the value of someone's claim if they don't produce the beef. Demand it or recognize the situation for what it often is: sizzle and no steak. It might also be unethical at times. The only way to know for sure is to actually find out, and you know what they say about fool me once...
Scientists make surprising discovery after studying DNA of ancient Egyptian Mummies
Long story short? The first ever full-genome analysis of Ancient Egyptian mummies has shown they were closely related to populations from the Mediterranean. Some would say this is a history changer.
Even though scientists believed that Ancient Egyptian mummies were all our of DNA, they were wrong. A new study has revealed fascainting—and totally unexpected—results.
According to reports, the first ever full-genome analysis of Ancient Egyptian mummies has shown that they were more Turkish and European than Africa.
Experts studied ancient DNA from Egyptian mummies from around 1400 BC to around 400 AD finding that they shared genes with people who originate from the Mediterranean.
Experts discovered that ancient Egyptian mummies were closely related to ancient people in the Levant, modern-day Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Israel and Lebanon.
The discovery has come as a surprise to many experts.
The sequencing success, reported in Nature Communications, “finally proves to everyone that there’s DNA preserved in ancient Egyptian mummies,” says Albert Zink, a biological anthropologist at the Institute for Mummy Studies in Bolzano, Italy.
According to sciencemag.org, he participated in a 2010 study that identified DNA sequences from 16 ancient Egyptian royal mummies, including Tutankhamun. But that study used polymerase chain reaction, a method that efficiently finds and extracts targeted DNA fragments but cannot always reliably distinguish between ancient DNA and modern contamination.
The researcher’s goals were to establish a comprehensive genetic database to study the ancient past of Egypt for the first time ever.
The ‘history-changing’ study was performed by Johannes Krause, a geneticist at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History in Jena, Germany, using state-of-the-art sequencing methods to read stretches of any DNA present in a sample and fish out those that resembled human DNA.
Speaking to Mail Online, Johannes Krause said: “The population history of Egypt is complex because it is found at the ispus of Africa, the gateway to a continent, and has seen much historical turnover, Ancient Egypt in the 1millenium BC had been dominated by many foreign powers.”
“It has been much debated whether foreign dominations such as Assyrians, Nubians, Greeks or Romans changed the gene pool of ancient Europe, making them more or less African. “We wanted to test that and found that there is genetic continuity between the old kingdom and Roman period. However in the last 1,500 years, Egypt became more genetically African, whereas the ancient Egyptians showed almost no sub-Saharan African ancestry and high affinity to ancient Near Eastern and European populations,” Professor Krause added.
RUMOR HAS IT Researchers stirred up controversy this year by claiming that a skeleton discovered in a Swedish grave (excavation illustrated above) belonged to a Viking woman warrior. Other potentially big scientific discoveries also generated buzz — and disagreement — in 2017.
EVALD HANSEN, C. HEDENSTIERNA-JONSONETAL/AMER. J. OF PHYS. ANTHRO. 2017
Some reports from 2017 hint at potentially big discoveries — if the research holds up to additional scientific scrutiny.
1. Under pressure
Putting the squeeze on hydrogen gas turned it into a long-elusive metal that may superconduct, Harvard University physicists claimed (SN: 2/18/17, p. 14). A diamond vise, supercold temperatures and intense pressure made the element reflective — a key property of metals. But other researchers in the field don’t buy it; one experiment with a slew of caveats isn’t enough to confirm the claim, those scientists say.
2. Woman warrior?
The skeleton of a 10th century Viking woman buried in full warrior regalia has scientists sparring over women’s roles in Viking society (SN: 10/14/17, p. 6). Researchers who confirmed the skeleton’s sex through DNA analysis contend that the woman was a high-ranking Viking warrior, the first Viking woman warrior known. But other archaeologists argue that the bones — with no obvious signs of injury or strenuous physical activity — are too pristine to have seen battle.
3. Blink and you’ll miss it
A far-flung star’s extra wink, spotted in data from the Kepler space telescope and further probed by the Hubble Space Telescope, may be the first evidence for an exomoon — a moon orbiting a planet orbiting a distant star. If it exists, the Neptune-sized candidate moon (dubbed Kepler 1625b i) is roughly 4,000 light-years away and orbits a planet a tad larger than Jupiter (SN: 8/19/17, p. 15).
4. Rooting out hominid origins
The first members of the human evolutionary family may have originated in Europe, not Africa. New analyses of a fossilized jaw (shown) and teeth from Graecopithecus, a chimpanzee-sized primate that lived in southeastern Europe roughly 7 million years ago, suggest that it may be the earliest known hominid(SN: 6/24/17, p. 9). But more complete fossils are needed to determine whether Graecopithecus was truly a hominid.
UFO Expert warns: Attempting to scan ‘Oumuamua may ‘wake’ alien intelligence inside
Despite the fact that there are no direct indications that the mysterious interstellar object known as ‘Oumuamua is anything more than a weirdly shaped asteroid, there are many UFO experts who do not rule out the possibility that it may be an alien space probe.
The enigmatic asteroid—first thought to be a comet—zipped past our planet earlier this year.
Due to a number of characteristics, astronomers eventually decided it would be a good idea to take a closer look at ‘Oumuamua, in order to rule out the possibility that it is more than just a space rock.
Recently, the Breakthrough Listen project used the world’s largest radio telescope to scan the mystery objects for any radio singles it may be emitting. Even though initial scans did NOT reveal anything being emitted from the space rock, a leading Ufologist believes we shouldn’t rule out ‘Oumuamua as an alien probe just yet.
According to Nick Pope, the former head of the Ministry of Defense’s UFO project, even though we haven’t picked up any signals from ‘Oumuamua yet, our scans may have ‘woken the alien intelligence’ inside it. Mr. Pope warns that this move may have turned Aliens toward us, and they may be now watching us.
Speaking in an interview with Sun Online, Mr. Pope said that even though scans haven’t revealed anything yet, we can’t rule out ‘Oumuamua is an alien probe.
“While nothing has been found yet, there’s another intriguing possibility: If this ship is an alien probe, it’s possible that our scans will awake the intelligence inside.”
Some argue that ‘Oumuamua may be an alien probe sent out by an advanced alien civilization to keep an eye on our world.
Whether or not we are looking at an alien space probe is still a mystery.
Mr. Pope added:
“Simply put, any alien ship searching for life may go into a dormant mode until it gets close to an inhabited planet.
“But what’s fascinating about this theory is just how many astronomers and other scientists are taking the idea seriously.
“It’s a sign of how accepting we are these days about the likelihood of finding alien life”
Many consider ‘Aliens’ and ‘UFOs’ a conspiracy theory, even though here is sufficient evidence that shows how worldwide governments have taken the idea more seriously in recent decades. Evidence of that is the recently revealed detail about the Pentagon’s secretive UFO research program that had staggering $22 million dollars budget to research UFO’s and whether or not they pose a threat to National Security.
Speaking about the Pentagon’s secretive UFO research program, Mr. Pope said:
“It’s an amazing revelation, not least because it directly opposes the many specific denials that the US government has issued previously when asked about this subject and their involvement in it.”
“The take-home message here is that there’s probably something out there, but we don’t know what it is.”
Returning to the ‘Oumuamua subject, Mr. Pope argues that it may very well be an alien probe disguised on purpose as an asteroid saying that: “Since there’s no air in space, an alien spaceship would not need to be designed in the same way that our aircraft have to be.”
“Rather than building an interstellar spacecraft from scratch, it makes perfect sense to take an asteroid and then build your ship around it, or hollow it out and build inside it, for the protection you’d derive from being surrounded by so much rock.”
Cosmic Crash That Knocked Uranus Sideways Also Made Its Moons
By Charles Q. Choi, Space.com Contributor
Uranus is a strange, giant planet tilted on its side. A new study finds that the same impact that knocked Uranus sideways may have also created the planet's moons. This image shows Uranus in false color as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope.

NEW ORLEANS — The giant impact from an Earth-size rock that knocked Uranus sideways may have also helped create the tilted planet's moons, a new study finds.
The poles along which Earth spins are mostly pointed the same way as the poles of the sun and nearly all the other planets of the solar system. However, Uranus is an oddball in that its axis of spin is tilted by a whopping 98 degrees (relative to the plane of the solar system), meaning it essentially spins on its side. No other planet in the solar system is tilted as much — Jupiter is tilted by about 3 degrees, for example, and Earth by about 23 degrees.
Now, researchers in Japan suggest a giant cosmic impact may not only have knocked Uranus on its side, but also created most of the planet's moons. [Photos of Uranus, a Tilted Planet]
Uranus possesses 27 known moons. Eighteen of these moons orbit around the planet's equator, and these "regular" moons make up 98 percent of the total mass of Uranus' moons, said study lead author Yuya Ishizawa at Kyoto University in Japan. The other nine moons are "irregular" in that their orbits are skewed away from Uranus' equator, and prior work suggested these moons were captured after Uranus formed.
In computer simulations, the researchers found that an Earth-size rock striking a newborn Uranus could have helped give the planet its current tilt. At the same time, the simulations found that the rubble from the impact could go on to collapse and form moons with orbits and masses similar to those of Uranus' actual moons.
"Material from the two bodies is ejected in a debris disk, and finally satellites are formed from the debris disk," Ishizawa told Space.com. "It is possible to explain the axial tilt and the formation of the regular satellites of Uranus simultaneously." [The 5 Weirdest Facts About Uranus]
Ishizawa noted that the researchers' initial simulations did predict the formation of a number of moons that would orbit Uranus at distances closer than planet's actual moons do today. He suggested that further research should investigate how the orbit of such moons might decay over time and potentially end up destroying these moons, explaining their current absence around Uranus.
Ishizawa and his colleagues detailed their findings Dec. 13 at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union in New Orleans.
Weird World: Evaporating Exoplanet's Orbit Is Misaligned

GJ 436b keeps getting weirder.
Astronomers already knew that the Neptune-mass exoplanet is evaporating; a few years back, a research team spotted the huge, comet-like tail of gas that streams behind GJ 436b as it orbits its small, dim host star.
Now, a new study reveals there's something very off about that orbit: It's highly elliptical and takes the alien world over the star's poles. (The "normal" case, exhibited by all eight officially recognized planets in Earth's solar system, is a relatively circular path in line with the star's equatorial plane.) [The Strangest Alien Planets]
"This planet is under enormous tidal forces because it is incredibly close to its star, barely 3 percent of the Earth-sun distance," study lead author Vincent Bourrier, an astronomer at the University of Geneva in Switzerland, said in a statement.
"The star is a red dwarf whose lifespan is very long," Bourrier added. "The tidal forces it induces should have since circularized the orbit of the planet, but this is not the case!"
Bourrier and his colleagues figured this out after analyzing spectrographic observations of GJ 436b, which lies 33 light-years from Earth in the constellation Leo. These observations were made by the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS) instrument at the European Southern Observatory's La Silla Observatory in Chile, and HARPS-N (for Northern Hemisphere), which is installed at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory in the Canary Islands.
The team's calculations also suggest that GJ 436b did not always sport its peculiar tail. The alien world probably once orbited much farther away from its parent star but was pushed inward at some point, likely by an as-yet-undiscovered sibling planet, study team members said.
"Our next goal is to identify the mysterious planet that has upset this planetary system," Bourrier said.
The new study was published online Monday (Dec. 18) in the journal Nature.
A lot of unexplained metal artifacts found all over the world, without being able to explain their origin the modern scientists feel thoroughly baffled.
Are these unknown metal objects proof that we have been visited by otherworldly beings? Or may be extraterrestrials teach our ancestors secrets of metallurgy that we are just now beginning to develop and reproduce? Perhaps by examining these strange metal objects, we may begin to understand our past, let’s have a look at 5 of the most bizarre metal artifacts ever discovered.
1 – 250,000-Year-Old Piece of Aluminum
A chunk of aluminum is on display at the National Museum of Transylvanian History in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
Lab tests concluded it is an old UFO fragment given that the substances it comprises cannot be combined with technology available on Earth.
The piece measures 20 cm (7.8 in) by 12.5 cm (4.9 in) by 7 cm (2.8 in) and looks like something one might dig up while excavating to put in a foundation for a building. The details of the discovery were never made public at the time because it was pulled out of the earth in communist Romania in 1973.
According to tests, the object is made of 12 metals, 90% aluminium, and it was dated by Romanian officials as being 250,000 years old. The initial results were later confirmed by a lab in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Conspiracy theorists suggest object is actually part of a UFO and proof of visitation by an alien civilisation in the past.
2 – Ulfberht Sword
Dozens of these swords—made with metal so strong and pure it’s baffling how any sword maker of that time could have accomplished it—have been found in Europe, along with some knock-offs. They are all marked with the Ulfberht name and two crosses, though some of the imitations are missing a letter here or there.
One of three Ulfberht swords found in the territory of the Volga Bulgars. Its hilt (classified as Petersen type T-2) is decorated with three lines of round holes inlaid with twisted silver wire
The Ulfberht sword was made of steel which has a carbon content of up to 3 times more than the average medieval steel. Today, it is the same material used years ago, that is called crucible steel. According the age of the sword the making of crucible steel has started in the medieval era. It is indeed surprising that how this happened. Crucible steel was not around in Europe until the Industrial revolution which took place in the 18th century.
3 – The Mythical Lost Metal of Atlantis
In 2015, 39 roughly-cast lumps of an unusual red-gold metal were recovered from the sea floor 300m off the coast of Gela in southern Sicily. The metal was identified as orichalcum, which was said by Ancient Greeks to be found in Atlantis.

Divers uncovered another 47 ingots from the mud which present unique finding. Scientists claim nothing similar has ever been found yet, orichalcum was mentioned only in some ancient texts and ornamental objects. Indeed orichalcum has long been considered a mysterious metal, its composition and origin widely debated.
Today most scholars agree orichalcum is a brass-like alloy, which was made in antiquity by cementation. This process was achieved with the reaction of zinc ore, charcoal and copper metal in a crucible, which requires modern technology and advance knowledge.
4 – The Betz Mystery Sphere
This bizarre, allegedly self propelled, seamless metallic orb was discovered by members of the Betz family in 1974, and rapidly became the object of fascination, controversy and alarm for scientists, military officials, ufologists and the general public as the story of this mystery sphere spread like wildfire through the international media.
Decades after its discovery, the Betz Sphere remains a scientific mystery
During inspecting the damage caused by a brush fire that had raged across an 88-acre swathe of woodland Betz family stumbled across a peculiar highly polished, metal orb that was just under 8-inches in diameter. The only delineating mark that the three could find on the eerily unblemished object was an elongated triangular shape stamped into its surface. Terry Betz decided to heft the 22 lbs., bowling ball sized sphere into their car and take it back home.
And that’s when the Betzes’ lives changed.
It began when Terry was playing guitar. The family reported that the ball strangely resonated the music. And then it began to move around, all on its own. The Betzes experimented with it, placed it on their table, and watched it navigate its own way around the perimeter without falling off. Doors began slamming themselves around the house. Mysterious organ music filled the residence, even though there was no organ. This seemingly impossible defiance of the laws of Newtonian gravity left the Betz tribe thoroughly baffled.
Puzzled by the bizarre sphere, the US military examined it and found it was made of high-grade steel and X-rays revealed there were three smaller balls inside, the object’s origin remains a mystery.
5 – Kera UFO
During the summer of 1972, a similar to Betz metal sphere (though not spherical) anomalous object plagued a group of teens who repeatedly managed to capture and lose a small, self propelled, evidently intelligently guided device over a vexing 4-weeks period in the Kera area of Kōchi City, Japan.
The airborne object resembled a dull, silver hat with a flat bottom and a narrow lip.
The silver, hat-shaped object weighed 1.3 kilograms (3 lbs) and measured roughly 7 centimeters (3 in) tall and 15 centimeters (6 in) in diameter. The bottom surface was perforated with an array of tiny holes and imprinted with designs depicting what appeared to be a bird, some waves, and another flying object. Something rattled around inside the object when shaken.
The strange device came to be known as the Kera UFO. This object’s movements also defied logic and appeared to be motivated by self preservation “instincts.”

Glowing Auras and ‘Black Money’: The Pentagon’s Mysterious U.F.O. Program
The shadowy program began in 2007 and was largely funded at the request of Harry Reid, the former Senate majority leader, who has had a longtime interest in space phenomena.
Crashes in Roswell, New Mexico, and flashing lights over New Jersey — for decades, people around the world have looked up at the skies and reported mysterious unidentified objects (UFOs).
But are these sightings signs of alien visitation? And are they truly unexplained?
A recent New York Times investigation found that the Pentagon had, for years, funded a program to answer just that question. The program found several reports of aircraft that seemed to travel at high speeds and have no signs of propulsion, the Times reported.
While the vast majority of UFO sightings, when investigated, have turned out to be the result of ordinary Earthly phenomena, such as weather balloons, flares or rockets, some still leave experts scratching their heads — and looking to the skies for little green men. From white Tic Tacs to flashing lights, here are some of the most mysterious UFO sightings out there. [7 Things Most Often Mistaken for UFOs]
Fighter pilot encounter
The Times investigation highlighted one of the most intriguing UFO sightings, which was captured on video. In 2004, two Navy F/A-18F fighter jets (also called Super Hornet or Hornet) encountered a mysterious flying object near San Diego, The New York Times reported. The object seemed to be traveling at high speeds, was surrounded by a glowing halo and was rotating as it moved. According to audio from the event, one of the fighter pilots exclaimed, "There's a whole fleet of them," the Times reported.
One of the Navy pilots who witnessed the bizarre event, Cmdr. David Fravor, recalled that the object looked like "a white Tic Tac, about the same size as a Hornet, 40 feet [12 meters] long with no wings," Fravor told The Washington Post. As his plane approached the UFO, the mysterious object accelerated "faster than I'd ever seen anything in my life," Fravor said.
Fravor, for his part, is convinced that the source of the object was extraterrestrial, he told The Washington Post.
French encounter
In 1981, a 55-year-old farmer in Trans-en-Provence, France, reported hearing a strange, high-pitched sound before seeing a flying saucer nearby. The lead-colored UFO took off almost immediately, he said.
What makes this sighting unique is that the farmer immediately contacted local police, who took soil and plant samples, according to a report of the incident. Experts from France's UFO-investigating body, formerly called Groupe d'Études et d'Informations sur les Phénomènes Aérospatiaux Non-identifiés (GEPAN), said the chemical evidence was consistent with heating of the soil and pressure from a heavy object. They also found traces of zinc and phosphate and evidence of abnormalities in the plants nearby.
However, skeptics said the smooshed plants could have been caused by tires, and cars had been heard traveling in the area around the same time as the farmer's sighting. Because there was a military base nearby, another explanation is that the French military was testing an experimental craft.
Sighting by retired astronaut
In general, some of the most reputable or credible sightings come from those who are in the skies all day long: pilots and members of the military. The National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) logged one such sighting in 2013, Vice reported. Late in the evening in 2013, the man, a former commercial pilot, fighter pilot and astronaut, was looking at the sky with his family in Athens, Texas, when he noticed what looked like an orange, glowing fireball.
"When I looked up into the sky, I saw a fairly large, orange, glowing orb moving rapidly overhead [at] right about 90 degrees of elevation," the man reported to the NUFORC.
After a few minutes, a group of three similar objects followed the same flight path. Three minutes later, two more objects flew along that same route. The objects gave off no sound and seemed to glow from atmospheric heating, the man reported. He and his family attempted to record the objects using their iPhones, though the grainy, dark video was difficult to decipher, he said.
"They moved much faster than orbital satellites (International Space Station, for example) or airplanes, but much slower than meteors and did not change brightness as a meteor would upon entering the atmosphere," the man said in his call. "I have no explanation for what we saw."
Lights over Mount Shasta
Another report from the NUFORC came from an airline captain who was flying between Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon, when he noticed glowing blue lights over Mount Shasta in California that appeared much brighter than the stars typically do in the area.
"The two lights were approximately an inch apart in the windscreen and the size of normal stars," the captain noted in a report. Then, "one of the 'stars' just dimmed out over about a 10-second time span followed by the other one dimming out completely in about 10 seconds also."
"We were flying in crystal-clear skies and were not flying though any clouds whatsoever. These two lights were not following the typical west-to-east orbital path as most satellites do and were just sitting there kind of like ships hiding in plain sight," the captain reported to the NUFORC.
The lights also appeared to be far above the level of the plane, which was flying at 38,000 feet (11,580 m).
Not so U-FOs
For every unexplained sighting, there are dozens that turn out to be military flares, weird cloud formations, weather phenomena or elaborate hoaxes. For instance, GEPAN's database suggests that only 7 percent of all supposed UFO sightings are truly unexplained.
In the 1940s, the U.S. Air Force began investigating UFO sightings, and that program, called Project Blue Book, logged more than 12,000 reported sightings before it was shuttered in 1969. Most of those Project Blue Book sightings were ultimately explained. While a few remained unexplained, the people involved in the program were skeptical that these cases were true alien sightings or completely unknown physical phenomena.
"If more immediate, detailed, objective data on the unknowns had been available, probably these, too, could have been explained," a report in the Project Blue Book archive noted. However, the fact that human factors are involved — in particular, personal impressions and interpretations, rather than accurate scientific data — it's likely impossible to eliminate all unidentified sightings, the report noted.
WHAT IS THE UNIVERSE? REAL PHYSICS HAS SOME MIND-BENDING ANSWERS
The questions are as big as the universe and (almost) as old as time: Where did I come from, and why am I here? That may sound like a query for a philosopher, but if you crave a more scientific response, try asking a cosmologist.
This branch of physics is hard at work trying to decode the nature of reality by matching mathematical theories with a bevy of evidence. Today most cosmologists think that the universe was created during the big bang about 13.8 billion years ago, and it is expanding at an ever-increasing rate. The cosmos is woven into a fabric we call space-time, which is embroidered with a cosmic web of brilliant galaxies and invisible dark matter.
It sounds a little strange, but piles of pictures, experimental data and models compiled over decades can back up this description. And as new information gets added to the picture, cosmologists are considering even wilder ways to describe the universe—including some outlandish proposals that are nevertheless rooted in solid science:
Will this collection of lasers and mirrors prove the universe is a 2D hologram? (Fermilab)
The universe is a hologram
Look at a standard hologram, printed on a 2D surface, and you’ll see a 3D projection of the image. Decrease the size of the individual dots that make up the image, and the hologram gets sharper. In the 1990s, physicists realized that something like this could be happening with our universe.
Classical physics describes the fabric of space-time as a four-dimensional structure, with three dimensions of space and one of time. Einstein’s theory of general relativity says that, at its most basic level, this fabric should be smooth and continuous. But that was before quantum mechanics leapt onto the scene. While relativity is great at describing the universe on visible scales, quantum physics tells us all about the way things work on the level of atoms and subatomic particles. According to quantum theories, if you examine the fabric of space-time close enough, it should be made of teeny-tiny grains of information, each a hundred billion billion times smaller than a proton.
Stanford physicist Leonard Susskind and Nobel prize winner Gerard ’t Hooft have each presented calculations showing what happens when you try to combine quantum and relativistic descriptions of space-time. They found that, mathematically speaking, the fabric should be a 2D surface, and the grains should act like the dots in a vast cosmic image, defining the “resolution” of our 3D universe. Quantum mechanics also tells us that these grains should experience random jitters that might occasionally blur the projection and thus be detectable. Last month, physicists at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory started collecting data with a highly sensitive arrangement of lasers and mirrors called the Holometer. This instrument is finely tuned to pick up miniscule motion in space-time and reveal whether it is in fact grainy at the smallest scale. The experiment should gather data for at least a year, so we may know soon enough if we’re living in a hologram.
The universe is a computer simulation
Just like the plot of the Matrix, you may be living in a highly advanced computer program and not even know it. Some version of this thinking has been debated since long before Keanu uttered his first “whoa”. Plato wondered if the world as we perceive it is an illusion, and modern mathematicians grapple with the reason math is universal—why is it that no matter when or where you look, 2 + 2 must always equal 4? Maybe because that is a fundamental part of the way the universe was coded.
In 2012, physicists at the University of Washington in Seattle said that if we do live in a digital simulation, there might be a way to find out. Standard computer models are based on a 3D grid, and sometimes the grid itself generates specific anomalies in the data. If the universe is a vast grid, the motions and distributions of high-energy particles called cosmic rays may reveal similar anomalies—a glitch in the Matrix—and give us a peek at the grid’s structure. A 2013 paper by MIT engineer Seth Lloyd builds the case for an intriguing spin on the concept: If space-time is made of quantum bits, the universe must be one giant quantum computer. Of course, both notions raise a troubling quandary: If the universe is a computer program, who or what wrote the code?
The universe is a black hole
Any “Astronomy 101” book will tell you that the universe burst into being during the big bang. But what existed before that point, and what triggered the explosion? A 2010 paper by Nikodem Poplawski, then at Indiana University, made the case that our universe was forged inside a really big black hole.
While Stephen Hawking keeps changing his mind, the popular definition of a black hole is a region of space-time so dense that, past a certain point, nothing can escape its gravitational pull. Black holes are born when dense packets of matter collapse in on themselves, such as during the deaths of especially hefty stars. Some versions of the equations that describe black holes go on to say that the compressed matter does not fully collapse into a point—or singularity—but instead bounces back, spewing out hot, scrambled matter.
Poplawski crunched the numbers and found that observations of the shape and composition of the universe match the mathematical picture of a black hole being born. The initial collapse would equal the big bang, and everything in and around us would be made from the cooled, rearranged components of that scrambled matter. Even better, the theory suggests that all the black holes in our universe may themselves be the gateways to alternate realities. So how do we test it? This model is based on black holes that spin, because that rotation is part of what prevents the original matter from fully collapsing. Poplawski says we should be able to see an echo of the spin inherited from our “parent” black hole in surveys of galaxies, with vast clusters moving in a slight, but potentially detectable, preferred direction.
The universe is a bubble in an ocean of universes
Another cosmic puzzle comes up when you consider what happened in the first slivers of a second after the big bang. Maps of relic light emitted shortly after the universe was born tell us that baby space-time grew exponentially in the blink of an eye before settling into a more sedate rate of expansion. This process, called inflation, is pretty popular among cosmologists, and it got a further boost this year with the potential (but still unconfirmed) discovery of ripples in space-time called gravitational waves, which would have been products of the rapid growth spurt.
If inflation is confirmed, some theorists would argue that we must live in a frothy sea of multiple universes. Some of the earliest models of inflation say that before the big bang, space-time contained what’s known as a false vacuum, a high-energy field devoid of matter and radiation that is inherently unstable. To reach a stable state, the vacuum began to bubble like a pot of boiling water. With each bubble, a new universe was born, giving rise to an endless multiverse.
The trouble with testing this idea is that the cosmos is ridiculously huge—the observable universe stretches for about 46 billion light years in all directions—and even our best telescopes can’t hope to peer at the surface of a bubble this big. One option, then, is to look for any evidence of our bubble universe colliding with another. Today our best maps of the big bang’s relic light do show an unusual cold spot in the sky that could be a “bruise” from bumping into a cosmic neighbor. Or it could be a statistical fluke. So a team of researchers led by Carroll Wainwright at the University of California, Santa Cruz, has been running computer models to figure out what other sorts of traces a bubbly collision would leave in the big bang’s echo.
Tech: An alien hunter explains why extraterrestrial visitors are unlikely — despite the US government’s UFO evidence
BY ROTHSCHILD JOBI
Astronomer Seth Shostak is skeptical about alien visitation: "It is a little odd that aliens would come hundreds and hundreds of light-years to do nothing."
The Department of Defense reportedly funded a program to investigate unidentified flying objects (UFOs), according to The New York Times and Politico.
One of the program's contractors said he is "absolutely convinced" that aliens frequently visit Earth.
However, scientists who look for extraterrestrial life say the published videos and other materials don't prove aliens were here.
Seth Shostak, a senior astronomer at the SETI Institute, gives several basic arguments for his skepticism about extraterrestrial visitation.
On Saturday, The New York Times and Politico independently published stories confirming that the US government had quietly funded a program to study UFOs for years.
The Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program "collected video and audio recordings of reported U.F.O. incidents," including one of an undated encounter with "an aircraft surrounded by some kind of glowing aura traveling at high speed and rotating as it moves," the Times wrote.
AATIP reportedly started in 2007 to study potential unknown military threats, and was funded by nearly $22 million of Department of Defense "black money".
DoD officials told The Times and Politico that it shut down the program in 2012. But Luis Elizondo, a military intelligence official who ran the research effort, allegedly continued its efforts after that.
Elizondo reportedly resigned in protest of the secrecy surrounding the program in October, and he now helps run a startup to research UFOs called the Stars Academy of Arts and Science.
"These aircraft … are displaying characteristics that are not currently within the US inventory, nor in any foreign inventory that we're aware of," Elizondo told CNN on Monday. "My personal belief is that there's very compelling evidence that we may nto be alone. Whatever that means."
But Seth Shostak, a senior astronomer at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute, is not convinced — despite making a bet that we'll detect aliens within 20 years.
"If you see something in the air that you don't understand, and you're the guy in charge of the Air Force, you want to know what that is. It doesn't have much to do with aliens, necessarily," Shostak told Business Insider of AATIP's purpose. "But despite more than a half-century of this, the really good evidence that we're being visited still has failed to surface."
Traveling hundreds of light-years 'to do nothing'?
But that isn't the only reason Shostak is skeptical of alien visitation claims.
For one, the distances in space are mind-bogglingly vast. NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft, for example, is leaving the solar system at a clip of 38,000 miles per hour. If the probe was aimed at Proxima Centauri — the closest star to Earth besides the sun — it'd take nearly 75,000 years to reach that system, since it's roughly 4.24 light-years away from us.
Shostak said that alien civilizations would know about our existence if they're within about 35 light-years of Earth, since we haven't been sending signals into space for very long.
"The only way they could know that is to pick up, for example, signals from our transmitters — television, radio, radar, all that stuff. But those signals have been going out only since the second World War," Shostak said. "So if they're more than 35 light-years away, there hasn't been enough time for our signals to get to them, and for them to decide, 'Well this is worth the money to go down there and fly around.' Because they can't go faster than the speed of light, and they probably can't go the speed of light."
Within a generous 50 light-years, there are only about 1,400 star systems.
"That sounds like a big number, but it's a very small number if you're looking for intelligent beings," Shostak said. "Unless they're the next star system over, which is statistically rather unlikely."
Assuming that aliens regularly visit Earth defies logic in other ways, too. In nearly all credible reports of UFO sightings, there's no interaction with the witness (aside from claims of alien abductions, which evidence suggests are hallucinations caused by episodes of sleep paralysis).
"They're the best house guests ever. Because if they're here, they're not doing anything, except for occasionally puzzling pilots. … They don't help us. They don't hurt us. They don't do anything, just sail around." Shostak said. "It is a little odd that aliens would come hundreds and hundreds of light-years to do nothing."
Shostak compared this to Europeans discovering America, but not troubling any Native Americans: "They don't try and take any of their land, they don't bring any disease, they don't do anything; they just sort of walk around at the fringes of their settlements, leading to puzzling sightings, but that's it."
On top of this, Shostak thinks the reasons to visit Earth aren't very convincing.
"I always ask, 'Why are they here now?' They weren't visiting the founding fathers in the late 1700s, they're visiting us," he said. "The Romans weren't troubled by the aliens visiting. It doesn't make very much sense why they're here now."
Rooting out the nature of UFOs
Shostak rejects the notion that the news about AATIP and the Pentagon's footage constitute any proof of aliens.
About 90% of UFO sightings have explanations, he said, and that still doesn't mean the other 10% are aliens.
"It just means they're unexplained," he said. "It isn't that one shouldn't look into these — of course, if there really is something here, it'd be extraordinarily interesting to find out. But the fact that there are cases that are hard to explain and that sound rather convincing would be true no matter what the premise."
Sara Seager, a planetary scientist at MIT who hunts for signs of habitable planets, echoed this idea in the Times' story, telling the newspaper "what people sometimes don't get about science is that we often have phenomena that remain unexplained."
Another area of skepticism for Shostak is that AATIP contracted out much of its work to Bigelow Aerospace in Nevada. The real-estate billionaire Robert Bigelow runs that startup and is friend of former Nevada senator Harry Reid, who started AATIP — in part, according to the Times, due to persuasion from Bigelow. Shostak said he's met Bigelow, and describes him as a "very likable guy" who is a passionate believer in alien visitations, but "not a scientist."
"If you were investigating some phenomenon that you're not sure whether it's for real or not, but it would be extraordinarily important if were real … you would want somebody sort of impartial, I would think," Shostak said. "Giving this case to somebody who already knows what the answer is is maybe not terribly objective."
And then there are the sightings themselves, which likely have far simpler explanations than alien visitations. For example, sightings tend to spike in the summer for a variety of reasons.
Issues with camera hardware, unfamiliar optical effects, atmospheric phenomena, bright stars and planets, and the presence of unmanned aerial vehicles are all common explanations.
Though AATIP's unmasking has vindicated many claims by the UFO community that the government is covering up its research, it "may be a situation where they should have been careful what they wished for," Shostak said. "The government said, 'Well, yeah — we did have a program, and we did cover it up, but we didn't find anything.'"
Indeed, an anonymous senior intelligence official told Politico that AATIP began mostly to root out the existence of unknown Chinese and Russian military technologies. But after a couple of years, "the consensus was we really couldn't find anything of substance," the official said. "They produced reams of paperwork. After all of that there was really nothing there that we could find."
Have Attempts to Scan Interstellar Asteroid 'Oumuamua Awoken Aliens Inside?
Matthew Loffhagen

The recent arrival and subesequent departure of our solar system's first known visitorfrom outside the sun's own creative sphere has given scientists a lot to talk about.
Nick Pope, former specialist with the UK Military of Defense, warns that in scanning the visiting rock, we may have awoken some kind of ancient life forms that dwell within what some are already speculating is a spaceship in disguise.
"While nothing has been found yet, there's another intriguing possibility: If this ship is an alien probe, it's possible that our scans will awake the intelligence inside.... "Simply put, any alien ship searching for life may go into a dormant mode until it gets close to an inhabited planet."
Speaking with UK supermarket tabloid The Sun, Pope goes on to explain how he believes that an alien race might design a probe by strapping sensors to an existing asteroid and then hurling it out into space. According to Pope, this is a genuine possibility that experts are taking very seriously, although he fails to elaborate on which actual experts he's spoken to.
It's worth pointing out that in the grand scheme of things, The Sun newspaper does not exactly have a high reputation within the UK press. The tabloid is known primarily for featuring photos of topless women on its inside page, and it's safe to say that the paper isn't exactly The Guardian when it comes to original research.
Pope himself isn't exactly an expert in extra-terrestrial research, being best known as a television personality—albeit not a particularly famous one. Pope is generally good for a quote that can feed a scary quote about an ancient alien race, but not exactly a reliable source of accurate predictions about a floating cigar-shaped rock in space.
As unlikely as it is that 'Oumuamua is any kind of alien transport, what is interesting is that the rock does potentially contain biological matter that could one day prove to be influential in creating the spark of life.
A new theory about the formation of life on our planet suggests that fertile material which allowed our very first ancestors to thrive was created as an asteroid was exposed to cosmic rays in space, essentially creating the building blocks for organic life that then crashed down onto our planet. It could be that 'Oumuamua contains similar cosmic flotsam, and that if, one day, it crashes onto a suitable planet, it could help to create single-celled organisms to begin populating that distant world.
While we're probably not looking at an artifact from an ancient alien race when we observe 'Oumuamua, there's a possibility, however slim, that we're glimpsing the beginning of a new alien race that could form in thousands of years from now when the asteroid finds a home on the surface of a distant world.
VIDEOS.

The people of Los Angeles can be forgiven if they were a little quick to jump to extraterrestrial conclusions.
So, it’s perfectly logical that Angelenos gazing into a darkening sky around 5:30 p.m. Friday would assume their city was in the midst of an alien invasion as they saw this:
Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur who ultimately wants to put people on a space-bound Megabus, fanned the flames by saying on Twitter that the jellyfish-like shape in the sky was a “nuclear alien UFO from North Korea.”
Southern Californians and other people out West, well, freaked out.
Jan Brewer, whose Twitter profile succinctly identifies her as “Arizona’s 22nd Governor” tweeted that she was wondering what the lights over Phoenix were. For some reason, she tagged President Donald Trump.
And many, many others pointed their smartphone cameras skyward, capturing what they assumed was the first sign of the alien apocalypse — or something — and musing about the vapory lights in the sky.
There was, of course, a perfectly reasonable explanation.
Musk’s SpaceX had launched an Irdium-4 rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California — about 150 miles from the City of Angels.
According to the Los Angeles Times, officials had warned that people would be able to see the launch across Southern California and elsewhere on the western half of the country. There was even a live webcast for those with more than a passing interest in rockets.
The moment a SpaceX rocket launch produced a shining, billowing streak in the sky over California
The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, carrying 10 satellites into orbit, left behind a trail of mystery and wonder as it soared into space after lifting off in the setting sun from coastal Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.
If you liked tonight’s launch, you will really like Falcon Heavy next month: 3 rocket cores & 3X thrust. 2 cores return to base doing synchronized aerobatics. 3rd lands on droneship.

Cosmic Filament Probes Our Galaxy’s Giant Black Hole
Release No.:
2017-35
Cambridge, MA -
The center of our Galaxy has been intensely studied for many years, but it still harbors surprises for scientists. A snake-like structure lurking near our galaxy’s supermassive black hole is the latest discovery to tantalize astronomers.
In 2016, Farhad Yusef-Zadeh of Northwestern University reported the discovery of an unusual filament near the center of the Milky Way Galaxy using the NSF’s Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). The filament is about 2.3 light years long and curves around to point at the supermassive black hole, called Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), located in the Galactic center.
Now, another team of astronomers has employed a pioneering technique to produce the highest-quality image yet obtained of this curved object.
“With our improved image, we can now follow this filament much closer to the Galaxy’s central black hole, and it is now close enough to indicate to us that it must originate there,” said Mark Morris of the University of California, Los Angeles, who led the study. “However, we still have more work to do to find out what the true nature of this filament is.”
The researchers have considered three main explanations for the filament. The first is that it is caused by high-speed particles kicked away from the supermassive black hole. A spinning black hole coupled with gas spiraling inwards can produce a rotating, vertical tower of magnetic field that approaches or even threads the event horizon, the point of no return for infalling matter. Within this tower, particles would be sped up and produce radio emission as they spiral around magnetic field lines and stream away from the black hole.
The second, more fantastic, possibility is that the filament is a cosmic string, theoretical, as-yet undetected objects that are long, extremely thin objects that carry mass and electric currents. Previously, theorists had predicted that cosmic strings, if they exist, would migrate to the centers of galaxies. If the string moves close enough to the central black hole it might be captured once a portion of the string crosses the event horizon.
The final option is that the position and the direction of the filament aligning with the black hole are merely coincidental superpositions, and there is no real association between the two. This would imply it is like dozens of other known filaments found farther away from the center of the Galaxy. However, such a coincidence is quite unlikely to happen by chance.
“Part of the thrill of science is stumbling across a mystery that is not easy to solve,” said co-author Jun-Hui Zhao of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass. “While we don’t have the answer yet, the path to finding it is fascinating. This result is motivating astronomers to build next generation radio telescopes with cutting edge technology.”
Each of the scenarios being investigated would provide intriguing insight if proven true. For example, if the filament is caused by particles being ejected by Sgr A*, this would reveal important information about the magnetic field in this special environment, showing that it is smooth and orderly rather than chaotic.
The second option, the cosmic string, would provide the first evidence for a highly speculative idea with profound implications for understanding gravity, space-time and the Universe itself.
Evidence for the idea that particles are being magnetically kicked away from the black hole would come from observing that particles further away from Sgr A* are less energetic than those close in. A test for the cosmic string idea will capitalize on the prediction by theorists that the string should move at a high fraction of the speed of light. Follow-up observations with the VLA should be able to detect the corresponding shift in position of the filament.
Even if the filament is not physically tied to Sgr A*, the bend in the shape of this filament is still unusual. The bend coincides with, and could be caused by, a shock wave, akin to a sonic boom, where the blast wave from an exploded star is colliding with the powerful winds blowing away from massive stars surrounding the central black hole.
“We will keep hunting until we have a solid explanation for this object,” said co-author Miller Goss, from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Socorro, New Mexico. “And we are aiming to next produce even better, more revealing images.”
A paper describing these results appeared in the December 1st, 2017 issue of The Astrophysical Journal Letters.
