Spooky UFO-Like Holes in Australian Clouds Explained by
Conspiracy theorists of Brisbane caught a glimpse of the unexplainable on Tuesday morning when a mysterious hole opened up in the cotton-ball clouds blanketing the city. Australian Twitter responded predictably, calling the hole a “portal” for UFOs. There’s no denying that the oblong gap seemed wide enough for aliens to step through, but as atmospheric scientist David A. Kristovich, Ph.D., explains to Inverse, it merely marks the footprint of falling ice.
“These are called ‘cavum’ or ‘hole-punch’ clouds,” explains Kristovich, who heads the Climate and Atmospheric Sciences Section of the Illinois State Water Survey Prairie Research Institute at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. “Cavum are usually circular or oval shaped holes that can sometimes be seen in layers of altocumulus or cirrocumulus cloud.”

Cotton-ball clouds paint strange and spectacular holes in the sky over Brisbane odd enough to attract the interest of forecasters at the weather bureau.

Cumulus clouds are the soft, puffy ones that look like the clumps in a favorite fleece sweater; altocumulus and cirrocumulus are subtypes that respectively live in the middle range and high range of the atmosphere. They’re opaque because they’re stuffed with water droplets that don’t quite behave the way you might expect water at that temperature to behave.
“In these conditions, the water droplets are called ‘supercooled’ because they remain liquid even though the temperature is below freezing,” says Kristovich. Understanding that those liquid droplets eventually turn to ice under certain conditions is key to believing that Brisbane’s cloud-holes are not caused by invading UFOs.

We’re all taught that liquid water freezes at 0 °C, but for a number of reasons this is not always the case. To turn to ice, a droplet of water must first “nucleate” — meaning it must have a seed around which to grow the rest of the ice crystal — but sometimes, at cumulus-level temperatures, the nuclei just don’t form. The water remains liquid and “supercooled,” and the cloud stays opaque. But this balance is a precarious one and can change any moment.
A number of factors can rapidly shift in a cloud, sowing the seeds of ice formation. And once ice starts to form, holes in the cloud begin to grow.
“If ice crystals start to form in these clouds of liquid droplets, they grow rapidly and draw water from the liquid drops,” says Kristovich. “As the area of ice crystal formation grows, the cloud droplets evaporate, causing a patch of the cloud layer to ‘disappear’.”
In the photo below, the elongated gash tearing through the sky represents the area where nucleation began and ice crystals started to form. As the translucent mist within the hole suggests, however, it’s not a perfectly cleared gateway to the upper atmosphere.
“The patch where the cloud layer disappeared often looks hazy and might have ‘virga’ – hazy wisps of ice crystals falling toward the earth because of their growth and increasing weight,” says Kristovich.

This may come as disappointing news for alien seekers, but they can take solace in the little mystery that remains surrounding hole-punch clouds. The sudden formation of ice crystals that causes droplets to fall out of an opaque cloud is not entirely understood, and scientists are still trying to figure out what prompts them to form. Some think it could well be flying objects — but not the unidentified kind.
“There has been a lot of interest in the scientific literature on what causes the ice crystals to form in these patches,” says Kristovich. “One way is through the influences of aircraft going through the cloud layers.” He refers to an articlepublished in 2010 in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society entitled “Aircraft-Induced Hole Punch and Canal Clouds: Inadvertent Cloud Seeding,” which documented the role of airplanes in causing ice crystals to form — that is, “seeding” — in cumulus clouds.
Previous studies have shown, however, that there are a number of ways that a cloud can be seeded. In fact, we already artificially seed clouds with molecules of silver iodide to force them to rain sooner than they naturally might. Brisbane, for its part, seems to have used a different type of human intervention to seed its clouds, though local UFO enthusiasts may not be convinced.

Let’s see … there’s the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Colossus of Rhodes, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon … Sloth, Greed, Dopey and Sneezy?
The Seven Wonders of the World (see the list here) were eventually called the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World as people began to create new lists that their favorite wonders, both manmade and natural, might fit in. Those left off competed for the title of Eight Wonder of the World. One such natural wonder candidate was the Pink and White Terraces of New Zealand — Te Otukapuarangi (“The fountain of the clouded sky”) and Te Tarata (“The tattooed rock”) – which were considered to be the largest silica sinter deposits on earth until they were completely destroyed in the 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera.
Does that eliminate them from the competition?
“The Pink and White Terraces were, at the time, unique natural manifestations of hydrothermal activity that impressed many visitors who travelled to the shores of Lake Rotomahana, prior to their inferred demise on 10 June 1886.”

A new study published in the Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand reveals that the answer may be “yes and no.” Prior to the eruption of Mount Tarawera, the silica sinter of the natural terraces leading down to the shore of Lake Rotomahana caught the sunlight and was said to cause them to glow in brilliant white and dazzling pink. Unfortunately, the colors were only able to be captured in paintings, the most famous being Charles Blomfield’s Pink Terraces.
Shortly after midnight on June 10, 1886, earthquakes shook the area, portending the eruptions of Mount Tarawera beginning two hours later. By the time it was over, the surrounding landscape and lakes had been changed permanently and the Pink and White Terraces, just 10 km (6.2 miles) from the eruption appeared to have been destroyed and lost forever in the crater that eventually became a part of the new Lake Rotomahana.
Recent expeditions beginning in 2011 claimed to have found remains of the terraces on the floor of Lake Rotomahana, but revised studies based on underwater photographs determined they were destroyed or not there, a theory promoted by different researchers who claimed that the remains of the terraces were actually buried less than 15 meters deep along the lake’s shore. That theory was disproved by the latest study.

Researchers, led by study author Cornel de Ronde, a research geologist at GNS Science in New Zealand, used historical photographs, maps, an 1859 survey, side-scan sonar, seismic surveys and other new technologies to chart the lake floor and prove the theory that the remains of part of the Pink Terraces are on the bottom of the lake.
“To conclude, it is the combination of numerous lines of scientific investigation, when paired with historical evidence and a quantitative analytical approach, that has enabled a holistic assessment of the available evidence resulting in accurate positions for the location of the Pink and White Terraces.”
Does this put the Pink and White Terraces back in the running for Eight Wonder of the World? Possibly, although the chance of any photographs of them seem pretty slim because of the depth they’re buried at and local Maori restrictions.
Which brings up the mystery of the phantom canoe. A Maori legend tells of a tourist boat returning from the Terraces just days before the eruption that saw what appeared to be a war canoe approaching their boat, then disappearing in the mist. One of the many witnesses was a local Maori clergyman. There were no records of the boat and one legend is that a fissure freed a canoe from the lake bottom that had been used for the funeral of a dead chief … a possible warning of the eruption. And future eruptions?
Local legends die hard. Will the chief have anything to say about the confirmation of the terraces?
After 130 years the scientists: they could have rediscovered an eighth wonder of the world.

The 54-year-old was quizzed by fans on Twitter about his experiences in orbit, asked if he had ever witnessed any aliens or UFOs.
Melvin revealed he had once been spooked after witnessing “something, organic, alien like” in the payload bay of the shuttle.
He revealed he even radioed NASA to let them know what he had seen, who dismissed it as just ice breaking away from the vessel.
Proof of life in space is constantly being probed by scientists who are looking to find evidence we are not alone in the universe.

The astronaut said the object he spotted with “translucent, curved, organic looking” – finishing his tweet with a alien emoji.
Melvin recalled when he radioed in the sighting to mission control, they told him it was ice that had broken off the shuttle’s hoses.

It’s often said that the search for aliens is too parochial — that our continuing efforts to locate cosmic radio broadcasts or laser beams are really just quests for analogs of ourselves.
Why so? Well, these efforts presume that extraterrestrials have enough curiosity to reach out to others in the galaxy, or at least send messages skyward for their own purposes (perhaps as a galaxy-wide newscast). These are motives we can understand because our descendants might do something similar.
But what about truly advanced beings? What would a higher-than-high-tech society do that others in the galaxy might notice? This is worth thinking about because broadcasting might not be their thing.
One possibility is that they would build or rearrange big stuff — in other words, engage in civil engineering on the scale of planets or larger. That would produce the kind of artifacts that astronomers might hope to see with their telescopes. Such undertakings would be a burden on Klingon taxpayers, so whatever they did would have to be worth the money.
Can we imagine a super-sized infrastructure project that would be a justifiable expense for the galaxy’s truly superior societies? Dan Hooper, a physicist at Fermi National Accelerator Lab near Chicago, believes he’s thought of one.
He notes that if you’re a long-lived culture, planning to hang around for semi-eternity, then the expansion of the universe is the ultimate bummer. The star-filled galaxies are now known to be moving away from one another (although the stars within a galaxy won’t do this). Worse, the speed of their sprawl is increasing. Even a Hubble-like space telescope will someday be a bad investment for our distant descendants, as very few galaxies will be close enough for it to observe.
That would frustrate future astronomers, of course. But an alien populace might see the thinning of the cosmos as an existential threat. Stars are useful energy sources, and each galaxy contains a few hundred billion of them. But every day, these fuel reserves retreat to greater and greater distances.
Hooper suggests that aliens would have the foresight to grab these stars while the grabbing’s good. They would snag them from surrounding galaxies and park them in their backyards for future use — a kind of nuclear nest egg that would provide sustenance during a dark and lonely future.
Hooper doesn’t offer a detailed description of how aliens might accomplish this stellar roundup. But he notes that the energy for transportation could be harvested from the cargo itself — by building huge swarms of solar panels (so-called Dyson spheres) around the stars to be moved, and then using the collected energy to power some sort of rocket engine.
In other words, the stars’ own glow could be used to carry them off to someone else’s galaxy.
From the standpoint of discovering extraterrestrials, Hooper’s scenario has an interesting consequence: If any extraterrestrials have been collecting stars, we might be able to find their stockpiles simply by making detailed photos of galaxies — a routine activity for astronomers. If we see extended patches of light with the brightness of, say, thousands of stars — or a galactic region where stars seem to be missing — then we’ll know that someone (or something) was thinking long term: preparing for the inevitable cosmic winter by stocking up on necessities while they can.
There are problems with Hooper’s idea. If there are many super societies out there, taking stars might be equivalent to cattle rustling on the final frontier. After all, you might be depriving someone of their future livelihood, and who knows if they’d fight back?
And as a matter of physics, you’d have to transport the stars quickly. You can’t spend more than a few billion years hauling them home because stars are perishable goods — they burn out.
The need for speed complicates the problem, because a high velocity requires lots of energy. As an example, suppose someone lugs a star from 10 million light-years away to our galaxy at one percent the speed of light, or nearly 7 million miles per hour. That’s a long ride, and even at this formidable speed, it would take a billion years. That might be OK, as most stars won’t expire in that time. But the fuel’s the rub, because rather few bright stars radiate enough energy in a billion years to accelerate themselves to one percent of light speed.
So paying for the haulage with starshine is dicey. It’s roughly equivalent to buying something by mail order and having to pay many times the item’s cost for shipping. That’s clearly unattractive, but you can always say it’s a technicality to be left to the aliens to figure out.
Hooper’s idea is imaginative, even if its practicality is uncertain. But at least it doesn’t assume that the extraterrestrials are like us. In the movies, the gray guys spend their time filching our resources, leveling our cities or assaulting our bodies. They’re no more than hairless hooligans. But for a society that’s millions or billions of years beyond us, there might be more important things to do.

The geoglyphs scratched into the barren ground of the Rio Grande de Nasca drainage basin are the Nasca Lines, one of archeology’s greatest mysteries. Theories of their purpose put forth over the years have included alien-constructed landing strips, a giant astronomical calendar, ceremonial pathways to the sites of sacred rituals, and markers of subterranean water sources.
The fantastic landscape—with representations of hummingbirds, spiders, monkeys, trees, trapezoids, and spirals—was created by removing rocks and the top layer of soil, colored red by oxidation, to reveal the lighter earth underneath. Over the centuries, the lime-rich sub-layer of soil hardened, further protecting the designs from wind damage and preserving them for future generations. Today, the landscape represents the largest and most diverse collection of geoglyphs in the world. The site was inscribed UNESCO World Heritage in 1994 for its archeological and cultural significance.
Altogether, the designs cover more than 300 square miles and include dozens of animal and plant figures and hundreds of lines and shapes. Many of the images are so large that they can only be fully seen from above, leading some to believe that they were meant for the eyes of gods, not humans.
The geoglyphs are believed to have been created in several phases between 500 B.C. and 500 A.D. by the pre-Hispanic people living on the Peruvian south coast. The Nasca people, who predated the Incas by centuries, inhabited the area until about 700 A.D.
The images were rediscovered in the modern era after the advent of aviation, as pilots began flying over Peru in the 1930s. Since that time, a series of researchers have obsessed over the reason behind the designs, some devoting their lives to the research.
One of the earliest to intensively study the geoglyphs was American professor Paul Kosok, who theorized that the designs represented “the largest astronomy book in the world.” The view was shared by German researcher Maria Reiche, who devoted her career to the project, earning her the moniker “Lady of the Lines.”
Later researchers disputed the astronomical explanation and suggested a number of other theories. Johan Reinhard, a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, posited that the lines pointed the way to ritual sites, while researchers David Johnson and Don Proulx concluded that the designs were markers of an underground water system. New images continue to be discovered, most recently in Palpa province, where 50 new examples were uncovered in early 2018. Many of the images, which include a dancing woman and a whale, are believed to have been created by the Paracas and Topara cultures, who inhabited the land before the Nasca people.
There are two options for viewing the Nasca Lines: from the air or via a viewing platform adjacent to the site. Private planes are available for charter from the Nasca airport for those who want the full gods-eye view. The plane tours cost about a hundred dollars for a half-hour tour, but will certainly provide the most memorable viewing. It is recommended for those who opt for the aerial tour that they book in advance and research the safety record of the company with which they will be chartering.
For those on a budget, there is no need to skip the site. Several the geoglyphs can be seen from El Mirador, a platform situated on a hill off the Pan American Highway.

In 1960, the astrophysicist Francis Drake pointed a radio telescope situated in Green Bank, West Virginia, in the direction of two Sun-like stars 11 light years away. His faith: to pick up a signal that would verify gifted life might be out there. Fifty years have departed by since Drake’s pioneering SETI experiment, and we’ve yet to perceive the aliens. But because of a host of discoveries, the idea that life might survive outside Earth now appears more believable than ever. For one, we now know that life can flourish in the most extreme surroundings here on Earth — from deep-sea methane seep and Antarctic sea ice to acidic rivers and our thirstiest deserts.
We’ve also discovered that liquid water isn’t exclusive to our planet. Saturn’s moon “Enceladus” and Jupiter’s moons “Ganymede” and “Europa” have large oceans underneath their icy surfaces. Even Saturn’s largest moon “Titan” could seed some kind of life in its lakes and rivers of methane-ethane. And then there’s the finding of exo-planets, with more than 1800 alien worlds outside our Solar System recognized so far. In fact, astrophysicists think there may be a million and millions of planets in our galaxy alone, one-fifth of which may be like Earth. As Carl Sagan excellently said: “The Universe is a pretty big place. If it’s just us, seems like an awful waste of space.”
Now some researchers trust the hunt for life outside Earth may well repay in our lifespan. “There have been 10K generations of humans before us. Ours could be the first to know,” said SETI astrophysicist Seth Shostak.
But what can occur once we do? How would we deal with the discovery? And what would be its influence on humanity? This overwhelming question was the focus of a meeting organized last September by the NASA Astrobiology Institute and the Library of Congress. For two days, a group of researchers, historians, philosophers and theologians from round the world discussed how we might prepare for the preordained discovery of life — microbial or intelligent — somewhere else in our Universe. The conference was hosted by Steven J. Dick, the 2nd yearly Chair in Astrobiology at the Library of Congress.
Of course, the influence of discovery will rest on on the specific situation. In a talk titled “Current Approaches to Finding Life Beyond Earth, and What Happens If We Do,” Shostak proposed three ways — or three “horse races” — for discovering life in space. First, we could discover it close, in our Solar System. NASA’s Curiosity Rover is at present studying the Martian surface for clues of past or present life. And “Europa Clipper”, a mission to Jupiter’s icy moon, is now under attention.
Second, we could “discover it out” of the atmosphere of an exo-planet, using telescopes to look for gases such as methane and oxygen that might clue at a biosphere. The James Webb Space Telescope, to be launched in 2018, will be able to carry out that kind of work.
Discovering life in our Solar System, which possibly would be microbial, might not have as great an impression as hearing from an intellectual civilization far away. We’d have to worry about matters like contamination. We might also find some different biochemistry, maybe exposing new visions about the nature of life. But that type of finding wouldn’t affect us as much as the view of communicating with intellectual life.
Then again it would take hundreds, if not thousands of years for a signal to mobile from side to side, Shostak mentioned. So that third situation would only show us a very few things immediately, such as their locality or what type of star they orbit. However, picking a signal might have other tempting implications about the nature of alien intellect.
Several scientists, including Shostak, put forward the following proposition: “That once a society creates the technology that could put them in touch with the cosmos, they are only a few hundred years away from changing their paradigm from biology to artificial intelligence.” The knowledge is based on the so-called “time scale argument” or “short window observation.”
Many scientists forecast we’ll have industrialized a strong A.I by 2050 here on Earth — about a hundred years after the creation of computers, or a hundred and fifty years after the creation of radio connectio. “The point is that, going from creating radios to devising thinking machines is very short — a few centuries at most,” Shostak said. “The leading intelligence in the cosmos may well be non-biological.”
In a talk titled “Alien Minds,” Susan Schneider, a philosophy professor at the University of Connecticut, explained that idea further. The idea of “whole brain emulation” is becoming gradually general among certain scientists, she explained. So are other unbelievable sounding ideas like “mind uploading” and “immortally.” So, to her, a civilization able to radio communicate would probably be “super-intelligent” by the time we hear from them.
According to the "short window observation" concept, a civilization talented of radio communication would possibly have established artificial intelligence by the time we hear from them. She also claimed that alien super-intelligence would be sensible in principle, since the neural code is similar to a computational code, and thoughts could well be inserted in a silicon-based substrate. A silicon-based intelligence would also have wonderful effects for long distance space travel. But again, a repeated theme throughout the conference was to be alert of our anthropocentric tendencies. There’s been a vast gap between microbial life and intelligent life on Earth, and even intelligent life has even progressed on a spectrum.
Lori Marino, a neuroscientist and current director of the Kimela Center for Animal Advocacy, debated as such in a talked titled “The Landscape of Intelligence.” We have a lot to study from other intelligent beings here on Earth (such as dolphins) before even thinking about contacting aliens.
Eventually, the utmost implications might be philosophical. Whether it turns out to be microbial, compound or intelligent, finding life somewhere else will increase fascinating questions about our place in the cosmos. A couple of presentations, by theologian Robin Lovin and Vatican astronomer Guy Consolmagno, even spoke the potential influence on the world’s religions. But what if we don’t find anything soon, or even at all?
The hunt itself can give us a sense of direction, and help us furnace a planetary characteristics, argued the philosopher Clement Vidal in a talk titled “Silent Impact.” And if we’re really alone, then we should start taking good care of life here on Earth, and consider our duty of colonization, he added. The hunt itself can help us forge a planetary identity, said philosopher Clement Vidal. In the interim, astrobiology can help thin the gap among the sciences and humanities, as many presenters highlighted. And it can be a step to incorporating our knowledge across a wide range of disciplines.
So, how do we get ready for something we know so little about? We do so “by on-going to do good science, but also by understanding that science is not metaphysically neutral,” finished the conference host Steven Dick. “We get ready by continuing to question our suppositions about the nature of life and intelligence.”

Als je voorbij de horrorfilms over aliens en de nepfilmpjes van UFO’s kijkt dan kom je al gauw tot de ontdekking dat er heel veel hooggeplaatste overheidsfunctionarissen en wetenschappers (500+) zijn geweest die hebben gezegd dat dit onderwerp een stuk serieuzer moet worden genomen.
De Canadese oud-minister van Defensie Paul Hellyer heeft bijvoorbeeld gezegd dat we al worden bezocht door buitenaardse wezens.
Robert Bigelow, de oprichter van Bigelow Aerospace, heeft in een tv-interview gezegd ‘dat er een buitenaardse aanwezigheid is geweest en nog steeds is’.
Bigelow was nauw betrokken bij het geheime UFO-onderzoek van het Pentagon, waar de New York Times vorig jaar over berichtte.

Production Begins on ‘Roswell’ TV Reboot
UFOs are SO hot right now. The US government’s quasi-official acknowledgement in December last year that aerial craft of unknown origin are real and continue to be secretly studied has reignited mainstream media interest in the subject—and this interest extends to the entertainment industry.
Hollywood is hoping to capitalize on the public’s newfound willingness to believe that “the truth is out there” with two major projects set for release in 2019, both co-produced by self-described “UFOlogist” Steven Spielberg: A Men in Blackspinoff movie starring Chris Hemsworth (the filming of which caused some disruption in London last week), and a reboot of the popular 1990s teen sci-fi series, Roswell.
The new TV show, titled Roswell, New Mexico, will again be adapted from the Roswell High book series by Melinda Metz and will draw narrative inspiration from the rich tapestry of UFO lore. It has been developed by Carina Adly Mackenzie for The CW and is set to debut as a mid-season entry during the 2018–19 television season. Controversially, it may even offer some mild Trump-era political commentary, specifically on the thorny topic of immigration. Here’s the official show blurb…
After returning to her hometown of Roswell, New Mexico, the daughter of undocumented immigrants discovers her teenage crush is an alien who has kept his unearthly abilities hidden his entire life. She protects his secret as the two reconnect, but when a violent attack points to a greater alien presence on Earth, the politics of fear and hatred threaten to expose him.
Roswell, New Mexico is a co-production between Bender Brown Productions, CBS Television Studios, Warner Bros. Television, and Spielberg’s Amblin Television. The cast includes Liz Ortecho, Nathan Parsons, Lily Cowles, Michael Vlamis, Tyler Blackburn, Heather Hemmens and Michael Trevino.
The show’s pilot episode is already in the bag after being filmed in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico last year. The rest of the series will begin filming on August 13, 2018 and will take place in Las Vegas, and Santa Fe.
As for the Men in Black spinoff, director F. Gary Gray’s London-based MIB is due for release on June 14, 2019.
Extraterrestrial Flotsam and Jetsam: Earth’s Moon and the Search For Alien Life
The Moon has long held the fascination of humanity, whether it be in ancient times when she was looked upon as sister to the Sun, or in modern times with her enigmatic rise over the horizon on any clear evening. Much can be said of the connection life on Earth shares with our Moon, from the tidal fluxes it governs to the pale glow it casts on Earth as it reflects sunlight at night, to which nocturnal creatures move about.
The Moon has also captured our imaginations for other reasons, particularly since the Apollo missions of the 1960s that first took humans to our barren and lonely natural satellite. This, of course, has also led to some rather odd speculative threads in the decades that followed: on the more extreme side of things, there are those who still maintain that the Moon landings could have been hoaxed, despite a remarkable amount of evidence to the contrary.
Others, while acknowledging that NASA’s studies of the Moon are legitimate, nonetheless try to argue that the space agency has been working to hide things from the public that we’ve found there. These ideas largely center around the notion that various “out of place” objects are visible in NASA photography, which ranges from trees and various other kinds of flora to buildings, landed spacecraft, and even lunar archaeological digs, as proposed by Richard C. Hoagland and others over the years (this game of pareidolia has carried over to Mars in more recent years too, with tabloids constantly reporting on alleged objects, and in one case even a Sasquatch, visible on the Martian landscape).
Of course, while most claims that involve the discovery of strange things on the Moon (or on Mars, for that matter) are rubbish, it’s at least worth noting that the possibility of discovering objects of artificial origin maybe shouldn’t be ruled out of hand.
Some time back, an associate of mine whose professional background is in aeronautics put things into context for me during a discussion we were having about the search for alien life. He brought up why the creations of some long-lost intelligent civilization might indeed end up on our Moon, and even if that civilization never took interest in Earth or visited our planet at any time in the past. As my friend suggested at the time, what essentially might amount to the “debris of civilizations from the billions of years of the Universe’s existence that drifted here” could eventually be found on the Moon, likening such interstellar garbage to “the junk floating on (Earth’s) oceans.”
My friend hadn’t been the only person who ever wondered about this possibility, however unlikely it might actually be. In a paper from a number of years ago by Alexey Arkhipov of the Ukrainian Institute for Radioastronomy, titled “A Search for Alien Artifacts on the Moon,” Arkhipov pointed out that ten stars which had been discovered at the time of the paper’s authorship had been potential hosts to intelligent life. These planets, having come and gone in our solar system since the appearance of our planet, might have produced various kinds of technology for remote exploration of space, much like our current space programs have done over the last several decades.
“Such distances,”Arkhipov wrote, “can be covered by space probes even at the present day level of science and technology.” Additionally, Arkhipov suggested that while we are studying unusual features on the Moon that would appear to be natural, perhaps they should not be ruled out of hand–particularly when viewed from great distances away–as possible artificial features of some kind.
Arkhipov wrote:
Only about 0.5 percent of the lunar surface has been photographed with a resolution of 1-10 m (Hansen 1970). But even the 1 m resolution photography can prove to be insufficient for an artifact discovery. For example, a photograph taken by Lunar Orbiter 3 shows the Surveyor 1 station on the lunar surface merely as a light-colored boulder (Jaffe and Steinbacher 1970). Modern lunar base projects (Shevchenko and Chikmachey 1989) contemplate placing manned modules under the lunar surface to protect them from radiation and meteorites. It is not improbable that our predecessors did the same billions of years ago. Since that time traces of their constructions could be destroyed by erosion, making objects hard to find.
Arkhipov’s ideas are novel, and while perhaps unlikely, he’s correct that we should never rule things entirely out of hand before they are reliably disproven. Although of equal interest to the ideas expressed in Arkipov’s writing is the fact that such a paper exists in the first place; for ideas of this caliber to be espoused seriously by scientists these days, let alone a few decades ago, is often tantamount to being anomalous itself. Similar papers have appeared though, such as Paul Davies and R.V.Wagner’s “Searching for alien artifacts on the moon” (Acta Astronautica, Volume 89, August–September 2013, Pages 261-265) and Davies’ “Footprints of alien technology” (Acta Astronautica, Volume 73, 2012, pp. 250-257), just to name a few.
The shape that exploration of the Moon will take over the coming decades is anyone’s guess at this point, although by some estimates, we could literally have people living on the Moon in the next decade. While there are promising ventures at work right now, both commercial and governmental, the overall cost of sending people to the Moon seems less attractive when a remote probe or lunar rover could be sent to the Moon on a one-way-trip, and complete the job for us from afar.
If technological trends and developments we are seeing today are any indications of things to come, they may also help facilitate more regular visits to the Moon, and if so, there may yet be unique things we’ll learn about our natural satellite… and maybe even a few unforeseen surprises.

I found this base on the Earths moon today. The base is clearly made by intelligent life because it has a perfectly flat bottom area which is impossible for something thats almost -5 miles across. However it could actually be a alien ship hovering above the surface. That would explain it. Also there is a tower near it that is about .3-.5 miles high. Absolute proof that aliens exist, so powerful of proof, we could take NASA to court and use this to force them to tell the truth about the existence of aliens.

Mayor Achille Lauro of Naples, which was badly damaged in World War II, called on General of the Army Douglas MacArthur yesterday and received the general’s cheering opinion that war between countries on this earth was probably obsolete.
However, war between the planets may replace it, in the general’s opinion, Mayor Lauro reported afterward in the (New York Times, Oct 8, 1955.)
Later In a speech MacArthur made at West Point in 1962: he stated,
“We deal now, not with things of this world alone, but with the illimitable distances and as yet unfathomed mysteries of the universe. We are reaching out for a new and boundless frontier. We speak in strange terms of harnessing the cosmic energy, of making winds and tides work for us, of creating unheard of synthetic materials to supplement or even replace our old standard basics; to purify sea water for our drink; of mining ocean floors for new fields of wealth and food; of disease preventatives to expand life into the hundreds of years; of controlling the weather for a more equitable distribution of heat and cold, of rain and shine; of spaceships to the moon; of the primary target in war, no longer limited to the armed forces of an enemy,but instead to include his civil populations; of ultimate conflict between a united human race and the sinister forces of some other planetary galaxy; of such dreams and fantasies as to make life the most exciting of all times.”

IPU Interplanetary Phenomenon Unit
Researcher Tim Cooper writes; It is my understanding from what Cantwheel told me that the Interplanetary Phenomenon Unit (IPU) was a unit in Army CIC before WW II that was proposed by General McArthur and established by a classified general order from General Marshall sometime in 1942 after an investigation of the March 1942 Los Angeles UFO air raid incident. In the frantic weeks that followed the Pearl Harbor attack, many Americans believed that enemy raids on the continental United States were imminent. On the West Coast, inexperienced pilots and radar men had mistaken fishing boats, logs and even whales for Japanese warships and submarines. Just a few days later on February 23, 1942, a Japanese submarine surfaced off the coast of Santa Barbara, California, and hurled over a dozen artillery shells at an oil field and refinery. While the attack inflicted no casualties and caused only minor damage, it marked the first time that the mainland United States had been bombed during World War II.
The day after the oil field raid, paranoia and itchy trigger fingers combined to produce one of the most unusual home front incidents of the war. It began on the evening of February 24, 1942, when naval intelligence instructed units on the California coast to steel themselves for a potential Japanese attack.

All remained calm for the next few hours, but shortly after 2 a.m. on February 25, military radar picked up what appeared to be an enemy contact some 120 miles west of Los Angeles. Air raid sirens sounded and a citywide blackout was put into effect. Within minutes, troops had manned anti-aircraft guns and begun sweeping the skies with searchlights.
It was just after 3 a.m. when the shooting started. Following reports of an unidentified object in the skies, troops in Santa Monica unleashed a barrage of anti-aircraft and .50 caliber machine gun fire. Before long, many of the city’s other coastal defense weapons had joined in. “Powerful searchlights from countless stations stabbed the sky with brilliant probing fingers,” the Los Angeles Times wrote, “while anti-aircraft batteries dotted the heavens with beautiful, if sinister, orange bursts of shrapnel.” Chaos reigned over the next several minutes. It appeared that Los Angeles was under attack, yet many of those who looked skyward saw nothing but smoke and the glare of backpack fire. Some people claimed to see disc shaped saucers in the air with exploding shells seeming to hit some sort of defensive shell around the craft. “Imagination could have easily disclosed many shapes in the sky in the midst of that weird symphony of noise and color.
For others, however, the threat appeared to be very real. Reports poured in from across the city describing Japanese aircraft flying in formation, bombs falling and enemy

There was even a claim of a Japanese plane crash landing or the downing of flying saucers. Allegedly one crashed in the ocean and was later recovered by the Navy.
While the Army also got a crashed UFO of its own.
Charles Patrick later wrote in a letter. “I could see six planes, and shells were bursting all around them.” The barrage eventually continued for over an hour. By the time a final “all-clear” order was given later that morning, Los Angeles’ artillery batteries had pumped over 1,400 rounds of anti-aircraft ammunition into the sky.
Secretary of War Henry Stimson echoed Army brass in saying that at least 15 planes had buzzed the city.
General Marshall established by a classified general order sometime in 1942 the Interplanetary Phenomenon Unit (IPU after an investigation of the March 1942 Los Angeles UFO air raid incident. Thousands of military personnel and civilians who claimed to have seen aircraft in the skies over L.A. According to an editorial in the New York Times, some eyewitnesses had spied “a big floating object resembling a balloon,” while others had spotted anywhere from one craft to several dozen. “
Japanese military later claimed it had never flown aircraft over the city during World War II, providing fuel for a host of theories involving visits by flying saucers and extraterrestrials.
During the war years the Interplanetary Phenomenon Unit (IPU) composed of several investigative teams were created to investigate the progress of the German atomic bomb program and the alleged German flying saucer program. The IPU reported directly to headquarters G-2 Intelligence.
Back in 1992, Robert Collins filed a FOIA request to INSCOM at Ft. Mead and received a 500-plus page package of Army CIC files on flying saucers in August 1996. More recently, NARA located the USAFOSI UFO files for all their districts and I gave this info to Ryan Wood who has received microfilm rolls of these files.
If the Department of the Army is correct, the IPU files are in there. If the IPU was created in 1942 as Cantwheel claims, then there had to have been incidents as far back as 1939 or 1940 to warrant an investigative unit in CIC. It is noteworthy to mention here that the State Department had received well over 800 reports from military Attaché’s during the 1946 UFO wave over Europe and is possible that the IPU got those reports. I have some reports from CIC in Europe that date to May 1947 and some reference CIC investigations in Germany shortly after Germany’s surrender. We have yet to see these. There were several projects. One was called MESA and another called HARASS. Project PAPERCLIP under a cover project called FIAT is mentioned in these CIC files. It would appear that the Army was investigating the UFO phenomena long before official Air Force investigations began in June 1947. General MacArthur and Admiral Mountbatten had knowledge of classified military involvement in the UFO issue has Allied Commanders in the Pacific during the Second World War. MacArthur was allegedly involved in the creation of an Interplanetary Phenomenon Unit (IPU) after the 1942 Los Angeles Air Raid involving UFOs. The IPU’s existence was eventually confirmed by Army responses to FOIA requests in 1984. Given MacArthur’s alleged role in the IPU, he was aware of official military records concerning UFOs. This contributed to his belief that extraterrestrials formed a national security threat that could unify the countries of the world.

“They were both convinced that they come from another planet but we mutually and independently came to the conclusion that they were not aeroplanes with silly almost human pilots but are themselves the actual inhabitants: Martians, Venusians, Jupiterians or what have you. Why should life in another planet with entirely different conditions in any way resemble life on our planet? Their inhabitants might be ‘gaseous’ or circular or very large. They certainly don’t breathe, they may not have to eat, and I doubt if they have babies– bits of their great discs may break away and grow into a new creature. The fact they can hover and accelerate from the Earth’s gravity again and even resolve around a V2 in America (as reported by their head scientist) shows they are far ahead of us. If they really come over in a big way that may settle the capitalist communist war. Is Someone Sabotaging Our Weather?
Jet streams are like rivers of wind high above in the atmosphere. These slim strips of strong winds have a huge influence on climate, as they can push air masses around and affect weatherpatterns.
The Jet Stream has moved south creating a state of emergency in numerous states and Europe with unusually hot weather and floods in many states. Additionally, tornadoes are setting records. Jet streams form at the boundaries of adjacent air masses with significant differences in temperature, such as the polar region and the warmer air to the south. The jet stream is mainly found in the tropopause, at the transition between the troposphere (where temperature decreases with height) and the stratosphere (where temperature increases with height).
Russian and Chinese Haarp facilities could be effecting the weather to sabotage the weather in the United States. Obviously weather warfare is difficult to prove. Haarp facilities may be affecting the weather in the US and Western Europe bringing in extreme heat. This is the hottest weather in years and may be a natural occurrence.
Successful Russian rain making equipment was exported to Mexico is likely adding to the severe drought conditions in California. The large number of fires in California and the West suggest arson by terrorists is a partial cause. The tremendous heat in the West develops large thunderstorms, rain, tornadoes and floods in the Mid–West and East.
China is already spending $100 million a year to make rain as scientists and employees are actively changing the weather. The Beijing Weather Modification Office is part of China’s nationwide weather control effort, believed to be the world’s largest; it employs 37,000 people nationwide, who seed clouds by firing rockets and shells loaded with silver iodide into them.

The Chinese government has approved a $168 million plan (1.15 billion yuan) to modify the country’s weather, potentially bringing more rain and snow across an area almost double the size of France.
It’s one of the biggest programs of its kind, and will rely on four new planes, eight upgraded craft, 897 rocket launch devices, and 1,856 devices connected to digital control systems, according to the South China Morning Post.
With weather-modifying technology, the China Meteorological Administration estimates it will increase precipitation in an area of 960,000 sq km – 10 percent of the country’s territory.
HAARP is the subject of numerous conspiracy theories. Physicist Bernard Eastlund claimed that HAARP includes technology based on his own patents that has the capability to modify weather. Various individuals have speculated about hidden motivations and capabilities of the project. For example, Rosalie Bertellwarned in 1996 about the deployment of HAARP as a military weapon. Michel Chossudovsky stated in his book that “recent scientific evidence suggests that HAARP is fully operational and has the capability of triggering floods, hurricanes, droughts and earthquakes
Nick Begich Jr., the son of the late U.S. Representative Nick Begichand brother of former U.S. Senator Mark Begich, is the author of “Angels Don’t Play This HAARP. He has claimed that the HAARP facility could trigger earthquakes and turn the upper atmosphere into a giant lens so that “the sky would literally appear to burn.” He maintains a website that claims HAARP is a mind control device.[36][37]

According to Zhang Qiang, head of the Office, cloud seeding increased precipitation in Beijing by about one-eighth nationwide, similar efforts added 7.4 trillion cubic feet (210 km3) of rain. Haarp appears to have the ability to effect the jet stream that appears to undulate more or less up and down as it meanders around the world. Effecting the jet stream direction in Russia or China theoretically can affect its position in the United States.
Traditionally, cloud seeding has involved dropping a vapor into the clouds (usually silver iodide) that’s designed to bond with the water, making it heavier and creating rain or snow. Ground-based generators are designed to spray upwards into the clouds causing it to rain. According to the Associated Press, many people believe the U.S. is falling behind in the cloud-seeding and weather control arms race.

New Radio Telescope Picks Up Mystery Signals Detected From Deep Space
A new radio telescope in Canada is doing its job picking up mysterious signals from deep space known as “fast radio bursts” (FRBs). The Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) in British Columbia detected the first-ever FRB at frequencies below 700 MHz on July 25, a signal named FRB 180725A. As you might guess, FRBs are milliseconds-long bursts of radio emissions that come from some unknown source across the universe. They’re one of the newer cosmic mysteries around, having been first detected only about a decade ago. Maya and Bruce Cornet, Amsterdam 1963
Dr. Bruce Cornet reports on his encounter with Maya and Lyra in Amsterdam in early August 1963. I was with my High School French Class, and we spent the summer at Cannes, France. On return to the United States we stopped at Amsterdam for three days.
Maya met me in the lobby, and asked me if she could be my tour guide. I thought she looked better than my other male companions, so I accepted her offer. I was mesmerized by Maya, a short petite brown-haired attractive woman, whose pheromones were very arousing at my age of 17. She spoke fluent English with no accent. For three days Maya escorted me around the city as a guide to tourist attractions, and I thought she lived there she knew the city so well. She introduced me to Lyra on the last day at the Zoo. I had no clue who she was or why she chose me. After two days I was falling in love with her; we held hands and even kissed.
She asked me about space travel. We talked about many subjects. At the end of day three days she asked me to take her back to her room in another building on the same street. At the door she said good bye. I asked her if we could write, and she said that would be impossible. I asked why? She replied that she did not live in Holland. I was surprised.

I asked her where she lived, and she said, “In the mountains.” I asked her which mountains, and she said, “The Andes Mountains” (in Peru?). I could not understand why she lived in another continent and did not have a mailing address. I would not find out why until I read Ted Rice’s story of meeting Maya and Lyra in Idaho during a summer job at a ski resort in 1962, one year before I met them. His story is published in Masquerade of Angels (1994) by the late Dr. Karla Turner.
In that lengthy story he tells of how on the last day he saw these two women, who befriended him for weeks at the resort, showing up unexpectedly and then disappearing just as mysteriously, they took him on a hike into the mountains to their disc-shaped ETV, and flew him to their underground base in the Andes Mountains. They showed him how they cloned human bodies and how they could transfer their consciousnesses from one body (container) to another. They transferred his spirit/consciousness to a female clone, and when he woke up he was shocked to find he was incarnated as a woman. He didn’t like it, so he asked them to return him to his original body, and they did. Then they took him back to the ski resort.
As crazy as this story might sound, and as dismissive it might be because critical parts of his story were recovered through regressive hypnosis, his description of Maya is exactly like my Maya (was she the original or a clone?), and what she asked and told both of us was very similar. She even told Ted that she kept a photo album filled with pictures of humans she had met on assignments.
I wanted a picture of her, but she said she did not want me to take a picture of her. That raised questions in my mind, because the entire encounter was so unusual, if not abnormal. I snuck a picture when we were at a wine factory, with me in the foreground and her in the background. Luis Elizondo Apparently Cannot Reveal Top Secret UFO Data
Dr. Bruce Cornet comment on Luis Elizondo tells the audience in the early part of his presentation at the overall successful MUFON Conference in Cherry Hill, NJ stated that “they” are already here. Then during the Q&A part at the end, he was asked to answer a question with a yes or no answer: Are ETs here? He said he could not answer that question yes or no, because he needed more facts. He said what he believes is not relevant, because it is an opinion. So he gave the audience a grey answer after saying “they” are already here. But he emphasized that the public needs to know the government (DoD) is taking the phenomenon seriously. The wolves have known for decades, but the sheep still do not know? Who is out of touch?· · He pushed the concept that the reality of ET and UAP are new to a lot of people, requiring slow disclosure with education. In other words, this is not Hollywood Sci Fi, folks.· · At the end he was asked a question about Eric Davis and Hal Puthoff, and he said they are both TTSA’s premier physicists who are working to understand the practical aspects of applied antigravity, implying that they don’t yet have a working model. Nuclear Bomb or Asteroid Impact Creates a Nuke Mushroom
A meteor hit the earth and exploded with 2.1 kilotons of force last month, but the US Air Force has made no mention of the event.
NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory confirmed an object of unspecified size travelling at 24.4 kilometers per second struck earth in Greenland, just 43 kilometers north of an early missile warning Thule Air Base on the 25th of July, 2018.
Director of the Nuclear Information Project for the Federation of American Scientists, Hans Kristensen, tweeted about the impact, but America’s Air Force has not reported the event.

On January 3, 2018 at 7:20 am, i was observing the sunrise. the object shown appeared in about 10seconds as I was watching. it appeared to be about 4-5 miles away and was hundreds of feet across. The object looked to be circular in shape and had pointed v-shaped structures coming out from the outside edges that were similar to the crown on the statue of liberty. The object was gleaming brightly in a silver color. It seemed to drop in altitude to just above the clouds and then remain stationary. I routinely take photos of sunrises and wanted to capture it to show to my wife. I ran out onto my front deck in my underwear and only took two photos as it was very cold. My mind was very confused at what I had seen and I seemed to have an inability to focus on the event. Just after the incident we were returning home after dark and had just left the highway onto Windmill Road when a disc UFO slowly passed over us going east and quickly disappeared glowing orange and red on the underside. Hot Springs — Here is a photo of the UFO sighted over Lake Ouachita on July 20, 2018. You can zoom in and actually see the outline and the geometric shape through the white light. You can see in the photo that it was not a star.. The sighting occurred around 9:30 p.m. I was looking due south.

Farmington — I and my grandchild were observing the stars outside our house on June 22, 2018, when an object appeared over the house across the street at a high altitude. At first we thought it was a plane so my grandchild started looking through binoculars and realized it was in the shape of a triangle.

I was watching the sunset on a 2nd story porch facing the bay on July 10, 2018.. 2. I first noticed how bright the object was and I thought odd there were no stars out yet 3. I had no idea what it was but it was slowly moving in my direction. Then became stationary.
4. The slow moving object had huge bright lights surrounding with a metallic background and smaller dimmer lights in the center. 5. We brought my cousin’s telescope out and we then could see the details described in #4. I was very excited, jumping up and down, due to details we could see through the telescope. White Plains — This is a photo I was sending to my family for genealogical purposes. I have the original and can provide it. once I uploaded the photo from my phone to my mac I noticed the odd object to the right since it was a black and white photo, it could have been silver, grey, etc. What captured my attention was a trail behind it like a contrail/chemtrail. That was a very odd thing to see back in 1919, It could be something wrong with the camera, but I found it interesting and thought MUFON would appreciate looking into it.

Winston Salem — This is an aircraft you can see most of the days landing in that area. I don’t know if this is another kind of ship. But it is interesting because it was a metal structure, aluminum, and was landing in that area. If you check the area in Goggle Earth you can see that in that area there is no a proper place to receive it.
The route is US-HWY 311. Close to Winston Salem, Exit 68. You can see it between 6 and 7 PM. It appears first as a light or star, and after a moment you can note that is descending. I tried of make it clearer with Photo shop and got a litter better view of the aircraft. Looks like an spherical shape. Very interesting really. Thanks to MUFON CMS

Monroe Institute — I was further analyzing my videos from Sunday, July 29, 2018, and I saw this when I made the picture of the starship a little bigger. It’s as though the star beings were saying Hi to me. The lines in the picture are from the computer’s monitor when I took the picture of the stopped video. I took this photo at night of a star craft that came overhead on June-5, 2018. The letters were “ty”. My wife and my son suggested that “ty” might mean thank you. Strange. It was maybe 1st “ty” or “thank you” and now “Hi”. These beings definitely have my attention.

Spokane –I look up at about 55* in the Western sky and see a bright light which I first thought was a helicopter but it made no sound and then it started immediately dimming/getting further SW then disappearing suddenly. As I am stunned I get up try to see if it went behind the tree in front of our porch, I then noticed two stars and all of a sudden a smaller dimmer light came out from behind (?)and under and then to the right of the brighter star and then changed direction started moving like a dim satellite moving up (eastward). It made no sound.
Then at 4:27 am I saw what at first looked like a plane then looked off and it was pulsating Orange and then whole thing was lighting up like pulsating and flying southeast. It made no sound. Thanks to MUFON CMS

Salisbury – On July 27, 2018 @ 9:51 pm on a beautiful night observing and shooting video and photos of the night sky. one star in particular, located almost directly overhead, seemed to keep drawing my attention. as I was filming and zooming in, an object appeared shooting from lower right to upper left of frame. once I edited video by adding a filter, I could see that the object changed trajectory and disappeared at high speed.

Courcheve — Standing outside of a ski chalet with a friend, myself taping. We both noticed a light in the sky very, very high up. It did not move but seemed to reflect light. I had my camera to hand, an Olympus Pen-F with a 14-42 lens attached. My friend and I pondered what the object could possibly be. A balloon, or perhaps a drone? I took photos, and then after about 30 minutes the object sharply headed across the sky and simply vanished.
My friend and I looked at each other, and knew that this was something quite weird. When I loaded the images to my laptop and zoomed in, the shape was nothing I had seen before. Thanks to MUFON CMS

Carrick on Shannon — I live in a rural part of the west of Ireland with no light pollution. Two persons and I observed a strange light in the sky at 9.45pm, on August 3, 2018. As we are rural and in a flight path to Knock Airport so we are very used to viewing aircraft, and this was very unusual in its brightness, hovering and sudden movements.. At 1.45am I went outside and observed that the object was still in the air but much closer. I could very clearly see its movements which went from hovering to very side to side and sudden up and down movements. The first video was without zoom and shows its sudden movements. The second video I zoomed in on the object and could not find any reasonable explanation as to what this could possibly be. Thanks to MUFON CMS

Novi Sad — I was in the center of around 8:50 pm and took photos of the church in the background and did not observe objects in the sky until I got home and looked at the pictures. They were taken during the course of a 3 minute time frame. Two shots of four objects moving west and the last shot showing some kind of larger craft in the distance. Five orbs are at the top of the picture, that are not stars as it was cloudy just a few minutes before rain started. I hope that MUFON can maybe make more sense of what is in the pictures. Istanbul — On April 29, 2018, as soon as I got to my house I saw an object moving fast west and a rhythmic bright white light blinking. I suspected that it might be UFO. I could photograph the second and third frames. The photo of Umer-3600 is the third photo of UFO.
Then the fourth UFDA pass is done in the same direction and the same speed and the event is finished. I also took the optical zoom with the Nikon CoolPix p900 machine.

Camborne — It had just gone half 11 on a Sunday morning of the 6th May 2018, when my son noticed what he thought was a bright star during the middle of the day. It was too late in the day to be a star or planet so I took notice straight away. It was hovering just above the tree line then suddenly moved to the right and travelled some distance instantly north. It was now n a northwest direction. again it hovered for about 15 minutes before beginning to climb in altitude. I managed to get a few photos and it looks like a bright star in them, though if you zoom in enough it does appear that you can make out it was a metallic ball. I wanted to zoom in with the camera, but as the sun was so bright I could not make it out well enough on the camera screen to lock in on it. Thanks to MUFON CMS
Newton Abbot — I was sky watching looking through my binoculars on July 24, 2018 when something darted out of a cloud and caught my eye. Whatever it was it was moving very fast. I could not see what it was at first but then I caught a glimpse of it. The object appeared to be shaped like a bullet and it was a grey color with a bluish tinge around it. I put down my binoculars and picked up my camera but unfortunately I had lost sight of the object. I zoomed in to the area of the sky where I had sighted the object and started to take photographs in random bursts hoping to capture the strange object in a photograph. I couldn’t believe my luck to my amazement the object flew by once again allowing me to capture it in one of the photographs that I was in the process of taking. wow. The Photograph was taken on the 24th of July 2018, 2:37 PM at Newton Abbot Devon England.

It is the largest mass UFO sighting in Australia, yet hardly anything was reported on it at the time.

Over the years, there have been differing reports about the details of what happened on April 6 at Westall High School, such as people claiming there were three saucerlike objects, while some thought there was just one.
In the 52 years since, there has been wide speculation about what people saw, with some believing it was an alien encounter and others pointing the finger at the government testing new technology.
Throughout all the years of speculation, however, one particularly interesting piece of audio has been greatly overlooked.
An American physicist known for his research into UFOs, Dr. James E. McDonald, conducted an interview with a science teacher from the Westall school, Andrew Greenwood, who witnessed the event.
He then recorded himself describing their meeting and the creepy details Mr. Greenwood gave about his experience. “Greenwood told me the UFO was first brought to his attention by a hysterical child who ran into his classroom and told him there’s a flying saucer outside,” Dr. McDonald said.
“He thought this child had become deranged or something so he didn’t take any notice, but when the child insisted that this object was in the sky he decided to go out and have a look for himself.”
When he went outside, he noticed a group of children looking toward the northeast area of the school grounds and as he approached them he claims he saw a UFO hovering close to the powerline.
Mr. Greenwood described it as a round, silver object about the size of a car with a metal rod sticking up in the air.
According to Dr. McDonald, the teacher then told him five planes came and surrounded the object as more people began gathering to watch the scene before them.
“He called it the most amazing flying he had ever seen in his life,” Dr. McDonald said.
“The planes were doing everything possible to approach the object and he said how they all avoided collision he will never know.
“Every time they got too close to the object it would slowly accelerate, then rapidly accelerate and then move away from them and stop. Then they would take off after it again and the same thing would happen.”
This game of cat and mouse reportedly went on for about 20 minutes and by this time Mr. Greenwood said 350 children and staff were watching on.
Suddenly the UFO shot away and vanished within seconds and it was at this point the headmaster came out and ordered everyone to go back to class.
Over the years there were reports that the government tried to cover up the incident and stop witnesses from talking, but Mr. Greenwood claimed it was the headmaster who first tried to squash discussion of the incident.
“He gave the school a lecture and told the children they would be severely punished if they talked about this matter and told the staff they could lose their jobs if they mentioned it at all,” Dr. McDonald said.
The teacher claimed the headmaster was so “scared” and “disturbed” by the incident that he had refused to come outside until the object was gone.
“When the Royal Australian Airforce contacted the headmaster he told them to ‘go and jump in a lake’,” Dr. McDonald said.
There have been claims from several witnesses that sharply dressed men in black suits visited them and warned them from speaking about the incident.
This lines up with a few experiences Mr. Greenwood had when he tried to speak with other witnesses about what they saw.
“At the time of seeing the UFO he was a complete skeptic himself. He had never even considered the possibility of their existence,” Dr. McDonald said.
“When he asked the physical education teacher to describe what she had seen herself so that he could compare it with his own observation, she just wouldn’t say anything.”
He then reportedly spoke to one of the older students who described the event in great detail exactly as he had seen it, but when he spoke to her again half an hour later she wouldn’t say a word.
Mr. Greenwood didn’t think it had anything to do with the headmaster’s threats as no one usually took him seriously and he knew for a fact that the student he spoke with didn’t attend the meeting where he had made the threats.
Dr. McDonald’s description of his interview with Mr. Greenwood offers a rare insight into the events from the eyes of someone who was an adult at the time.
There continues to be speculation over what actually happened and the site of the encounter has been turned into a memorial park to reflect the 1966 Westall UFO Incident.
UFO sighting: HUGE alien space ship spotted above Philippines
Popular UFO hunter Scott C Waring posted on his blog that an alien space ship was trying to camouflage itself in the clouds.
The photo shows faint clouds with a rainbow light scattered through the atmosphere.
However, conspiracy theorists are pointing to a large, circular but translucent object in the clouds which they believe is a UFO using a cloaking device.
Mr Waring says of the image, which was taken in General Santos, Philippines: “This awesome UFO was hiding above a cloud during sunset and for a few minutes the cloaked craft was visible to the naked eye.
“Such beautiful colours and notice the round disk edge of the craft. This looks to be at least 500 meters across.”
The anonymous person who took the image and passed it onto the UFO hunter said: “Unfortunately, I had only one phone at hand, the ‘good’ HD Camera is currently defective. The colours were actually much more intense.”
However, other self-proclaimed experts believe this is not concrete proof that humanity is looking for in the search for extraterrestrials.
Nigel Watson, creator of the UFO Investigations Handbook, said the light is simply a trick of they eye.

Résultat : « seulement » un emploi sur dix serait menacé par la prochaine « robolution » dans les pays les plus industrialisés.
Avec une approche similaire, l’enquête Insee/DARES5 arrive à 15 % d’emplois automatisables pour la France. « Bien malin en vérité qui peut prédire ce qui sera techniquement automatisable », intervient Gregory Verdugo selon lequel aucun de ces chiffres ne fait sens. « En 2004, Frank Levy et Richard Murnane, deux économistes de Harvard, classaient la conduite parmi les activités qui échapperaient aux révolutions technologiques parce qu’elle réclame de s’adapter à des situations non prévues. Six ans après la sortie de leur livre, les Google Cars sillonnaient les routes californiennes… », illustre l’économiste.
« Jusqu’à présent, ce sont surtout les emplois non qualifiés qui ont été pourvus ou modifiés par des machines, dans les usines principalement. Aujourd’hui, c’est le caractère routinier ou non d’une activité qui est pris en compte, le fait de suivre une suite d’actions selon un protocole strict », analyse Gilles Saint-Paul, chercheur au sein de l’unité Paris-Jourdan Sciences Économiques6. Et routinier ne rime pas forcément avec peu qualifié. Jardiniers et plombiers tirent ainsi leur épingle du jeu, en partie grâce à la souplesse de leurs gestes et à leur facilité de déplacement, bien loin de celles des robots. Tandis que les cols blancs ont de quoi trembler sérieusement, à commencer par les comptables jugés à l’unanimité « très automatisables ».
Selon le New York Times, de nombreuses banques américaines développent des « robo-advisors », logiciels qui gèrent le patrimoine et font fructifier l’argent de leurs clients. Au Japon, Watson, la célèbre intelligence artificielle d’IBM, remplace trente-quatre employés d’une compagnie d’assurance-vie, soit un quart des effectifs. Et on teste des algorithmes pour conseiller juges et avocats à partir de décennies de jurisprudence ou pour distinguer entre mille une tumeur maligne. Chaque jour, ou presque, de nouvelles prouesses émaillent la rubrique high-tech des webzines, laissant perplexes les jeunes cadres dynamiques.
« Ce qui est amusant, c’est que chacun croit qu’il n’est pas remplaçable par une vulgaire machine, mais je pense qu’à long terme, on finira tous par y passer », soutient Serge Abiteboul, chercheur au Département d’informatique de l’École normale supérieure (DI ENS)7, qui imagine sans état d’âme déléguer une part importante de la recherche scientifique aux intelligences artificielles (IA) du futur. « En biologie par exemple, séquencer un gène était un sujet de thèse acceptable il y a quelques années, maintenant c’est entièrement automatisable. Et dans la plupart des domaines de recherche, une grosse partie du travail est déjà faite par les machines », abonde Gilles Saint-Paul, également prêt à céder son fauteuil à une IA pondeuse de modèles économiques. Mais alors quid de la créativité, nécessaire dans ces activités intellectuelles ?
« Les programmes d’échec ou de jeu de go jouent parfois des coups créatifs auxquels les humains n’auraient pas forcément pensé. La création n’est pas le but principal des machines actuellement, mais avec des générateurs de nombres aléatoires, elles peuvent produire des quantités pharaoniques de choses qui sont ensuite triées via des mécanismes de sélection : la plupart partira à la poubelle mais dans le lot, il y aura des idées intéressantes », répond Gilles Saint-Paul. « D’ailleurs, il y a déjà des productions artistiques réalisées par des machines, en arts graphiques, en écriture de scénarios, etc. La question est plutôt : aura-t-on envie de lire le roman écrit par un algorithme ? », interroge Serge Abiteboul.
À long terme, il n’y aurait donc pas d’obstacle théorique à une automatisation totale. Il y a ainsi 50 % de chance que l’IA soit plus performante que nous en toutes tâches dans quarante-cinq ans en moyenne, et automatise tous les métiers dans cent vingt ans, selon les 352 experts en IA interrogés par une équipe d’Oxford8, qui situent la rédaction d’un best-seller et la maîtrise d’une chirurgie aux alentours de l’an 2050.
Quant à la gaucherie des robots ambulants, c’est un faux problème : « Certes, le plombier humain se contorsionne pour atteindre les bons tuyaux et boulons, mais on peut repenser et standardiser l’organisation spatiale de nos installations pour que ces mouvements complexes ne soient plus nécessaires », estime Raja Chatila, directeur de l’Institut des systèmes intelligents et de robotique (Isir)9, faisant remarquer que la méthodologie de son lave-vaisselle est totalement différente de la sienne pour arriver à un résultat identique… Idem pour les robots Kiva des entrepôts de la société Amazon. Comme le choix et la préhension sur les étagères des objets à expédier est un vrai casse-tête pour un robot avec des bras, la société de vente a changé la nature de la tâche à accomplir : les robots, sortes de « coffres à roulettes », se contentent de glisser sous les étagères et de les soulever pour les apporter entières à un employé (humain), qui, en bout de chaîne, n’a plus qu’à lever le bras pour y prendre le bon article à expédier.
« Le processus est repensé pour que les tâches non routinières soient remplacées par des tâches routinières automatisables, dans le même esprit que la chaîne d’assemblage de Henry Ford », commente Gilles Saint-Paul. Selon lui, toute tâche peut se découper en une suite d’actions à accomplir strictement. « La distinction routinier/non routinier n’est pas immuable. Une fois qu’on comprend bien une tâche, toutes peuvent devenir routinières », affirme-t-il. Dans ce cas, ne faudra-t-il pas garder un humain « dans la boucle » pour prendre les décisions finales, notamment en médecine et dans le domaine de la justice ?
Le besoin de maintenir ainsi la machine à un traditionnel rang de simple outil, inévitable condition brandie par les cols blancs en voie de remplacement, laisse Gilles Saint-Paul sceptique : « Je ne suis pas certain que des arguments techniques le prouvent. En revanche, il faudra bien entendu considérer les problèmes d’éthique et de responsabilités juridiques ou morales que cela peut poser, ainsi que l’acceptation des citoyens et des consommateurs. Même s’il faut garder quelques humains au travail pour superviser les machines et prendre les décisions finales, on peut imaginer qu’à long terme, on sera plus proche d’un cas limite du type un humain pour cinq cents machines », projette l’économiste qui a élaboré six scénarios pour un tel monde.
En attendant une potentielle « robolution » totale, revenons à notre avenir imminent. Un consensus émerge clairement chez les chercheurs sur une idée jugée contre-productive et pour l’instant retoquée par le Parlement européen : taxer les machines « voleuses10 » d’emplois. « Les robots et logiciels perfectionnés sont une opportunité considérable pour la croissance et l’innovation. Les taxer alors qu’ils n’ont pas encore été déployés serait stupide », affirme Gilles Saint-Paul. « Si seule la France met en place une taxation, elle aura un désavantage compétitif par rapport à d’autres pays », enchérit Gregory Verdugo. Une telle mesure pourrait provoquer une sévère vague de « délocalisation robotique », alors que notre pays est généralement jugé sous-équipé et en retard : 32 000 robots, contre plus du double en Italie et du triple en Allemagne11.
Ensuite, ce n’est pas parce qu’une activité est robotisée qu’elle n’emploie plus d’humains : les industries automobiles outre-Rhin ont 100 000 salariés de plus qu’il y a vingt ans12. Beaucoup d’emplois non qualifiés et qualifiés vont disparaître, mais d’autres devraient être créés sur les nouveaux marchés des objets connectés, des transactions sécurisées ou des dispositifs médicaux, dans lesquels la France a un fort potentiel à exprimer. Enfin, les pays qui ont le plus de robots (Japon, Corée du Sud, Allemagne et Suède) seraient aussi ceux qui ont le moins de chômage et le plus d’emplois dans l’industrie.
La technologie transformerait l’emploi plus qu’elle ne le détruit (Encadré 1). « Regardez les métiers de la banque : avant l’arrivée de l’informatique, ils étaient faiblement qualifiés (donner des petites coupures, noter les dépenses, etc.), reprend Gregory Verdugo.Une fois déchargés de ces activités routinières et mécaniques, ils se sont spécialisés dans des activités plus qualifiées de conseil. » Finalement, cela nous pousse à nous spécialiser là où se trouve l’avantage comparatif de l’humain par rapport à la machine. Et maintenant que les algorithmes de conseil sont sur le point de les surclasser, que feront banquiers et assureurs ? « Ils trouveront autre chose pour améliorer le service », suppose l’économiste. Il est vrai, les humains sont très doués pour créer de nouveaux besoins, il suffit de voir le nombre d’applications smartphone dont on ne peut plus se passer...
Selon le Conseil d’orientation pour l’emploi, il faut ainsi se préparer à ce que la nature de 50 % des emplois mute sous l’influence de l’IA. Et début 2016, le Forum économique mondial estimait que plus de 2 millions d’emplois seraient créés d’ici à 2020 dans les domaines spécialisés, tels l’informatique, les mathématiques et l’ingénierie. Mais « si tous les gens qui ne sont pas complémentaires de l’IA sont mis sur le côté et qu’on leur donne des jeux et du cirque, dans cinquante ans nous avons Metropolis, et dans un siècle nous avons Matrix », prophétise le transhumaniste Laurent Alexandre13, qui n’a peut-être pas tout à fait tort sur ce point-là…
« En tout cas, il vaut mieux aider les gens à se réallouer dans un autre secteur plutôt que d’empêcher la mise en place des technologies, sources de richesses », insiste Gregory Verdugo. Selon lui, le discours de la préservation des emplois à tout prix, exercice obligatoire du politique en visite dans une usine, est plutôt vain, surtout dans les secteurs en déclin à cause d’une rupture technologique (comme le disque laser face aux fichiers téléchargeables sur Internet) ou d’un changement de goût des consommateurs. « Il vaut mieux protéger les individus que les emplois, comme l’ont très bien fait à la fin des années 1990 les pays scandinaves en mettant en place des politiques de formation dites de flexisécurité », illustre le chercheur. À condition bien sûr qu’un vrai volet sécurité compense les concessions en matière de flexibilité…
Et si un revenu universel de base s’impose pendant les années de transition, afin de maintenir la cohésion sociale, il ne doit pas s’opposer à la transformation numérique mais l’accompagner. C’est le filet de sécurité dont les travailleurs bénéficieront pour se former et s’adapter tout au long de leur vie. Dans ce cas, qui devra mettre la main au porte-monnaie ? « Comme le propose Thomas Piketty, on peut taxer le capital en général plutôt que de taxer le travail, reprend Gregory Verdugo. Surtout, taxer spécifiquement les robots au détriment des autres technologies pousserait notre industrie à essayer de s’en passer. » Économiquement suicidaire et franchement anachronique… (Encadré 1).
Le travail ne restera pas forcement le nœud autour duquel s’articulent droits sociaux, intégration sociale et accomplissement de soi. « Pousser des wagonnets au fond de la mine n’est pas un objectif pour l’humanité », commente Serge Abiteboul. Robot vient du tchèque « robota » qui signifie « travail forcé », et travail vient du latin « tripalium », instrument de torture à trois pieux… Peut-être aboutira-t-on dans cent ans à une société sans travail humain où les individus n’auront comme inquiétude que d’occuper leur temps libre et se trouver un nouveau rôle social. « Keynes voyait le progrès comme facteur d’expansion du loisir. Le problème ne sera plus de donner du travail à tout le monde mais de se répartir des richesses produites grâce à la technologie », conclut Gregory Verdugo. « L’économiste Richard Freeman, de l’université d’Harvard, encourage d’ailleurs travailleurs et syndicats à investir dans la possession des machines et logiciels sophistiqués. Pour que les gains en productivité qu’ils apporteront soient effectivement redistribués et que les travailleurs ne deviennent pas “ les serfs des nouveaux seigneurs des robots ”. » On nous aura prévenus… ♦
Pour sauvegarder l’emploi, l’empereur romain Vespasien avait ponctuellement renoncé au progrès technique au Ier siècle. Les canuts de Lyon, ouvriers tisserands de la soie, firent la peau à de stakhanovistes machines à tisser dont la cadence leur faisait concurrence dans les années 1830, tandis que leurs homologues britanniques, les luddites, en auraient réduit en miettes plus d’un millier en 1811. L’idée que le progrès technique détruit l’emploi a la vie dure. Dans les années 1980, l’économiste Alfred Sauvy montra qu’elle était fausse et que durant les deux siècles précédents, production et productivité furent bouleversées et décuplées sans provoquer d’augmentation durable du chômage. « C’est la thèse du déversement », explique Gregory Verdugo. En bref, grâce à une meilleure productivité, le progrès technologique permet de baisser le prix de certains produits, ce qui provoque une hausse de la consommation de produits déjà existants ou de nouveautés, créant de nouveaux emplois pour les produire. « Le passage du cheval à la voiture a mis les cochers au chômage mais a aussi créé toute une industrie automobile. Et nous sommes passés de la société agricole à industrielle, puis au tertiaire, dominé par les métiers de service, en consommant plus de soins médicaux, de loisirs, de culture, etc. Il n’y a pas de modèle économique qui le garantisse, mais jusqu’ici l’innovation technologique n’a jamais tué l’emploi. »
Le progrès technologique n’a certes jamais tué l’emploi, mais il crée toujours des inégalités. Ces quarante dernières années, les travailleurs les plus qualifiés ont tiré les marrons du feu tandis que les moins qualifiés se sont appauvris. Avec la prochaine « robolution », les écarts devraient se réduire : en se reconvertissant dans les métiers encore préservés, les cols blancs verront baisser leur revenus (sauf les experts des nouvelles technologies), tandis que les personnes peu qualifiées dont le travail est encore difficilement automatisable (jardinier, plombier, nounou, etc.) vont gagner du pouvoir d’achat. Jusqu’à ce que, imagine-t-on, tout le monde soit logé à la même enseigne : plus de travail… Le seul véritable problème de l’humanité serait alors la répartition des richesses produites. « Il faudra prendre garde à ne pas aller vers un monde trop inégalitaire », imagine Serge Abiteboul. « Aujourd’hui, quelques “ oligopoles ” du web se partagent une très grande quantité de richesses et paient très peu d’impôts. Les gouvernements doivent y réfléchir s’ils veulent sortir de ce modèle délétère », alerte le chercheur. « Les créateurs de ces empires ont du talent, mais cela justifie-t-il qu’ils accaparent en totalité le produit du travail des machines ? Est-ce vraiment un choix de société ou plutôt le résultat de systèmes politiques et de considérations économiques devenus obsolètes ? », questionne Serge Abiteboul. Nos modèles économiques fonctionnent en effet sur la concurrence, or dans le monde du web la logique est inversée : « De nouveaux concurrents n’ont quasiment aucune chance de détruire la situation de monopole d’un acteur déjà bien développé, car plus il y a de monde sur un réseau, plus il est attractif pour les consommateurs. Par exemple, créer un concurrent à Internet est parfaitement illusoire ! La nature des biens a changé et il faudrait revoir nos systèmes économiques et politiques de A à Z… », conclut le chercheur.

Lat month, a fiery meteor was detected in Greenland close to a U.S. Air Force base with 2.1 kilotons of force, as reported by scientists on Twitter.
On July 25, an object moving at about 15 miles/second (24.4 kilometers/second), or 54,000 mph (87,000 km/h), was identified near Thule Air Base. The U.S. Air Force did not immediately report the event or respond to the crash, according to The Aviationist. However, Air Force spokeswoman Capt. Hope Cronin said in an email to Military.com that no one was injured and that the meteor didn't affect or harm any activity at the base.

Though concerning, the object had a relatively small effect. "By comparison, the 2013 meteor over Chelyabinsk, Russia released over 200 times the energy of the Greenland meteor," JoAnna Wendel, a NASA spokeswoman, said in the report by Military.com. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) confirmed the object's speed, though the actual size of the meteor remains unknown. It was also reported that the object was about 27 miles (43 km) north of Thule Air Base.
Hans Kristensen, director of the Nuclear Information Project for the Federation of American Scientists, and Ron Baalke of JPL, also known as "Rocket Ron," a "Space Explorer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory" on Twitter, have discussed the impact on Twitter. Baalke reported the event, while Kristensen added that the event did not seem to be any sort of attack.

It is not uncommon for small asteroids to enter Earth's atmosphere and turn into bolides, or fireballs, according to data from NASA's Near-Earth Object program. "Meteors of this magnitude or greater, caused by the impact of small asteroids (a few meters in size) with Earth's atmosphere, occur a few times a year," Wendel said.

The world’s superpowers are currently scrambling to construct and test next-generation space bases and weapons in an attempt to gain space superiority before those other guys do. Whether or not Moonraker-style zero-gravity laser rifle battles will be a real thing any time soon, defending from space-borne threats both man-made and natural is a serious priority for defense officials. At an Air Force Association event this week, USAF Lieutenant General VeraLinn Jamieson made the curious comments concerning other galaxies to Stephen Trimble, editor of FlightGlobal, an aviation intelligence consulting and analytics firm. At the event, Trimble asked LtGen Jamieson about the future of the USAF’s Rivet Joint aircraft, a signals intelligence platform. In response, LtGen Jamieson seemed to dodge the question and instead proceeded to tell Trimble that other galaxies will soon be prime real estate for the armed forces:
I am convinced that there are more domains – man-made domains – that will come, and I would offer you that if we look at galaxies – sounds nuts – but there’s going to be a man-made domain in galaxies.
When Trimble presumably blinked in confusion and asked her to clarify what she meant by “galaxies,” LtGen Jamieson replied that we’ve got to free our minds when it comes to conceptualizing about the military’s potential role in space:
Space has got different galaxies. And in those galaxies in the future we’re going to actually have capability that we have right now in the air. We don’t know what it is because we haven’t freed our mind to think about what is in that space and how we are going to utilize it. Space is contested. It’s going to happen.
Also buried in her reply is what appears to be a reference to unidentified objects here on Earth tracked by drones and the difficulties the Air Force has had in identifying them:
When we actually rolled out Predator there was one ball [sensor module] on Predator and it was not high-definition, but it was an EO/IR [electro-optical/infrared] ball and our airmen really had – that’s where we started to identify ‘What are you seeing?’, ‘Tell me what the object is.” because we couldn’t really do that. We then evolved to a high-definition EO/IR capability. We then put SAR [synthetic aperture radar] on it. We then put hyper-spectral there. We have to do the exact same thing in space.
Whether or not that comment actually has anything to do with unknown objects from space (probably not), it’s kind of weird to hear the Air Force’s Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance talk about freeing our minds and developing operations in other galaxies. On Twitter, Trimble himself noted that he’s “still baffled” about the exchange and even commented that the conversation “would have made a lot more sense if at least one of us was very stoned.” Has the Air Force opened up some sort of stargate and is trickling out information in order to prep the feeble minds of the public before full-on disclosure? Or is this merely a somewhat rambling off-the-cuff remark further signalling that the future of the Air Force might indeed be the Space Force?
Humanoid UFO Spotted In The Skies Above Germany
A video shows a mysterious human-shaped UFO hovering in the skies. Conspiracy theory YouTube channel ‘mavi777’ has uploaded the clip online. The video was reportedly recorded from Dresden, Germany. The YouTube channel claims that something unusual is taking place in the skies.
A resident apparently shot the video on July 29 of this year. As soon as he discovered something strange, he sent the footage to the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) for further investigation. The eyewitness wrote in a report that the object did not look normal.
Many online conspiracy theorists have started suggesting that the object in question might be a shape-shifting alien humanoid. Alien hybrids, as per these theorists, have many unique abilities, such as shape-shifting to help them hide from the public.
YouTube user Louis Mac said that they saw similar object over Texas while in a plane and they have a picture to show.
However, others strongly objected to the views of alien enthusiasts. These skeptics, including YouTuber The Full Metal Chef, stated that the sky sighting is an aerostatic weather balloon that got misinterpreted as a UFO. They explained that these balloons had been observed across the world.
Some others argued that it might be a weird looking cloud.
One Of A Kind UFOs Spotted In China
The leapfrogging flying objects above Chinese skies spark alien invasion claims. Famous UFO researcher Tyler Glockner, who runs Secureteam10 YouTube channel, uploaded a video allegedly shot from China showing several strange flying objects appearing in the skies of the country. The UFO researcher argues in the video that several witnesses in the great nation have shot the same sightings a few days back, and it made multiple people think that an extraterrestrial invasion is imminent.
The UFO sighting in China appears to be very different from the traditional videos on UFOs people have seen previously. The recent clip features a leapfrog nature of the objects in the skies.
Tyler Glockner revealed that many people had seen the UFOs and many recorded them on videos. Their team dubbed the mysterious lights as leapfrogging lights or leapfrogging UFOs as they often jump or leapfrog over one another. When one light disappears, another one will appear in the front of it, explained Glockner.
Some conspiracy theorists have argued that the strange objects are actually a one triangular UFO making continuous spin.
The video of the strange event soon went viral on YouTube. Some viewers of the video put various theories about the unusual sky phenomenon.
One viewer says that it looks like a rotating triangular object and others suggest that the leap-frogging lights are the apex lights on cloaked TR3B rotating very slowly.

Incredible Hulk? Nah, This Glowing, Green Light in the Night Sky Is a Comet
A gigantic, green-tinged comet is currently smashing its way through the night sky, leading some people to dub it the "Incredible Hulk comet." Tomorrow (Aug. 7), the celestial object will make its closest approach to Earth, according to Sky and Telescope magazine. This is likely the first time the comet has ever come into the inner solar system.
On July 15, Comet PanSTARRS (C/2017 S3) appeared bright and well condensed with a narrow ion tail.

Officially known by the more drab name of C/2017 S3, the comet was discovered on Dec. 23, 2017, by the PanSTARRS telescopes in Haleakala, Hawaii. The flying, green space rock has already given skywatchers a couple of surprising treats, with bright bursts exploding from its surface twice in close succession — first on June 30, and then again about two weeks later, Sky and Telescope reported. As Hulk himself might say, "Comet flash!"

Such outbursts are common with comets, though their exact cause is unknown. Whatever its origin, the second eruption on C/2017 S3 created a huge cloud of gas surrounding the icy object, extending nearly twice the size of Jupiter, to around 161,000 miles (260,000 kilometers) across, according to Austrian amateur astronomer Michael Jäger.Its greenish hue is the result of cyanide and carbon molecules being warmed by the sun and becoming ionized, meaning their electrons and protons separate from one another, causing a characteristic glow, Brian Koberlein, an astrophysicist at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York, reported on his blog.

Some news reports have quoted a Russian scientist as claiming that the jolly green comet will cause some sort of apocalyptic upheaval on Earth. Worry not! Like its green-skinned superhero namesake, C/2017 S3 is far more benign than it seems. But Russian astronomer Stanislav Short of the telescope astronomical station Tau has said the comet poses no danger and that such objects pass by our planet all the time without incident.
C/2017 S3 will be about 70 million miles (112 million km) from Earth at its closest approach. The comet will then head toward the sun, swinging around our central star on Aug. 16 and then zipping back out to the distant reaches of our solar system. Right now, the comet is too close to the sun to be visible, but it may be visible later in August after it rounds the sun and comes around again, Paul Chodas, the manager for the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, told Live Science.
The orbit of C/2017 S3 is steeply inclined at 99° and passes close to the Sun at perihelion.

NASA’s brand new TESS telescope is already sending back impressive footage

NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) started its scientific activity on July 25, but, even before that, TESS managed to snap some awesome images of a passing comet — only discovered a month ago.

The comet is named C/2018 N1 and is located some 48 million kilometers (29 million miles) from Earth, in the southern constellation Piscis Austrinus — the Latin name for “southern fish”. The comet can be seen moving right to left, orbiting the Sun, leaving behind a “tail” — which consists of gases carried away from by an outflow from the Sun called the solar wind, according to NASA.
But the comet isn’t the only interesting thing visible in the images, which also feature asteroids and stars. If you look closely, you can see some stars shifting from white to black and to white again. This comes as a result of image processing, which highlights variable stars. These stars change brightness either as a result of pulsation, rapid rotation, or by eclipsing binary neighbors.

TESS’ main job, however, isn’t to keep an eye out for comets and variable stars. In a two-year survey of the solar neighborhood, TESS will monitor more than 200,000 stars for temporary drops in brightness caused by planetary transits. This is the most common way of detecting a planet. Since planets don’t have their own light, it’s difficult to see them directly so, instead, they look at stars and look for dips in its luminosity, which can be indicative of a planet passing between the star and the Earth. The nature of the dip can then be used to determine certain parameters of the planet. The vast majority of the 3,815 confirmed exoplanets have been discovered using this method.
TESS is the first-ever spaceborne all-sky transit survey. It will scout the sky, looking for planets ranging from Earth-sized to gas giants, around a wide range of stellar types and orbital distances, primarily focusing on the brightest stars in Earth’s vicinity. No ground-based survey can achieve this feat, due to atmospheric perturbations.
Since the comet footage, TESS has already started its main activity. Hopefully, it won’t be long until the first results start coming in, and we have a new batch of exoplanets to study and understand.

De goudzoekers die in het Siberische Uakit op een stuk ruimtepuin van bijna vier kilo botsten, dachten dat ze de jackpot hadden gewonnen. Maar de realiteit bleek nog veel straffer: de steen bevatte een mineraal dat nog niemand ooit had gezien.
Na een eerste onderzoek bleek het onbekende mineraal van een meteoriet afkomstig te zijn die heel recent op aarde was neergestort. Het grootste deel van de meteoriet bestond uit ijzer en nikkel, maar twee procent bestond uit mineralen die enkel in de ruimte worden gevonden.
Verder microscopisch onderzoek leverde meer vragen dan antwoorden op, want het ruimtegesteente bevatte een mineraal dat geen enkele wetenschapper ooit had gezien. De onderzoekers gaven het mineraal de naam ‘uakitiet’ mee, naar de regio waar het werd ontdekt.
Al snel ging in de Russische media het gerucht dat het mineraal harder zou zijn dan diamant, omdat de structuur van de substantie overeenkwam met de hardste stoffen ter wereld.
Hoofdonderzoeker Victor Shargyin temperde evenwel het enthousiasme: “Het mineraal is hard, maar niet zo hard als diamant.” Maar wat is het dan wel en wat betekent het voor de wetenschap?
Omdat de stalen zo klein zijn, kunnen wetenschappers uakitiet maar oppervlakkig bestuderen. “We moeten nieuwe technologieën ontwikkelen om zulke kleine stalen te bestuderen, of we moeten een groter staal vinden”, luidt het bij de onderzoekers.
Veel zijn we dus niet wijzer geworden. De wetenschappers weten alleen dat het vreemde mineraal waarschijnlijk is ontstaan in extreem hoge temperaturen.

Wetenschappers van de University of Colorado Boulder publiceerden enkele weken geleden nog een studie: er is gewoonweg te weinig koolstofdioxide of water aanwezig op Mars om de planeet ooit te kunnen bevolken met mensen. Maar daar heeft Elon Musk duidelijk geen oren naar, de excentrieke miljardair liet duidelijk blijken dat hij nog altijd rotsvast gelooft in de kolonisatie van Mars.
“Er zit een gigantische hoeveelheid CO2 in de ondergrond die zou vrijkomen bij verwarming”, tweette hij vorige week. “Met genoeg energie van een artificiële of natuurlijke zon, kan je elke grote steen aardeachtig maken.”
Met die tweet ging Musk lijnrecht in tegen de studie van de University of Colorado Boulder. Kletst de SpaceX-oprichter dan uit zijn nek of heeft hij echt een plan? Een ‘geheime’ conventie voedt alvast de geruchten dat Musk op een plan aan het broeden is.
SpaceX zou uitnodigingen rondsturen voor een ‘Mars Workshop’ op de, jawel, University of Colorado Boulder, dezelfde universiteit die alle hoop op marskolonisatie de grond in boorde. Naar verluidt zullen tientallen topwetenschappers en –ingenieurs de conventie bijwonen en ook enkele vooraanstaande NASA-wetenschappers staan op de gastenlijst.
Musk is als de dood voor lekken, want hij draagt alle genodigden op de conventie geheim te houden. Zowel de inhoud van de bijeenkomst als de identiteit van de aanwezigen moeten geheim blijven.

Zowel de massa van het object als de enorme kracht van zijn magneetkracht tart alle kennis van astronomen over hemellichamen in de diepe ruimte. Het object werd voor het eerst gespot in 2016, met behulp van de Very Large Array-telescoop (VLA) in New Mexico. Aanvankelijk werd het beschouwd als een bruine dwerg, zeg maar een ‘mislukte ster’.
Bruine dwergen zijn moeilijk te categoriseren. Ze zijn te groot om als planeet beschouwd te worden, en niet groot genoeg om een ster te zijn. Veel is er nog niet geweten over deze mysterieuze hemellichamen. De eerste werd pas waargenomen in 1995. Wetenschappers probeerden meer te ontdekken over de magnetische velden en radio-emissies van vijf bruine dwergen, toen bleek dat dit object wel eens iets anders zou kunnen zijn.
Het object, met de welluidende naam SIMP J01365663+0933473, bleek veel jonger dan de andere. Die leeftijd wijst er volgens de onderzoekers op dat ze hier niet te maken hebben met een ‘mislukte ster’, maar dat ze mogelijk een losgeslagen planeet ontdekt hebben.
“Dit object situeert zich op de grens tussen een planeet en een bruine dwerg”, zegt onderzoeker Melodie Kao, astronoom aan Arizona State University. “De verrassingen die dit object in petto heeft, kan ons helpen om de magnetische processen op sterren én planeten te begrijpen.”
Het hemellichaam heeft, net als sommige bruine dwergen, immers een gloed die vergelijkbaar is met het noorderlicht op aarde, ondanks het gebrek aan zonnewinden die hier doorgaans voor verantwoordelijk zijn. Het is het radiosignaal van deze gloed dat de onderzoekers toeliet het object te ontdekken.
Een analyse van het onderzoeksteam, die gepubliceerd werd in The Astrophysical Journal, toonde aan dat het magnetische veld van de planeet ongelooflijk krachtig is: zo’n 200 keer sterker dan dat van Jupiter. Dat zou mogelijk kunnen verklaren waarom het object zo’n sterke gloed heeft.

De constructie begint vanaf de dakgoot en eindigt aan de onderkant van de korf. “Bij dit soort aanvallen gaan de wespen er normaal gezien als een wervelwind vandoor”, aldus biologen. “De mieren blijven daar zitten tot ze het volledige nest geplunderd hebben. Ze nemen alle larven en eitjes mee. Ook de wespen die niet wisten te vluchten, zijn een vogel voor de kat.”
Waarom het leger mieren de aanval niet gewoon via het plafond inzette? Daar blijkt een heel logische verklaring voor te bestaan. “Veel miersoorten vinden het niet zo evident om ondersteboven te lopen. Het is op die manier ook lastiger om de buit te transporteren. Voor hen is het dus gewoon veel efficiënter om een spoor te volgen dat eerst naar beneden en dan naar boven loopt.”

“IT IS hovering and it is not an aircraft.”
These are the last words anyone ever heard Frederick Valentich say before his radio cut off and he, and the aircraft he was piloting, were never seen again.
On October 21, 1978, a 20-year-old Valentich rented a single engine plane out of Victoria’s Moorabbin Airport with plans of heading to Tasmania’s King Island to catch seafood.
But things took a terrifying turn when he noticed he was being followed by another aircraft.
It has been 40 years since the young Aussie pilot disappeared over the Bass Strait and in that time no one has come any closer to finding out what happened to him.

The only clue left behind was a radio conversation between him and Melbourne Airflight Service Controller, Steve Robey.
It was 7pm when Valentich radioed in to ask if there were any known aircraft in the area, just after something zoomed overhead.
Robey informed him that there was “no known traffic” in the area and inquired as to what type of plane it was.
“I cannot affirm. It is four bright, it seems to me, like landing lights. The aircraft has just passed over me at least a thousand feet above,” Valentich said.
As the transmission went on things got even more unnerving, with Valentich reporting that the mystery aircraft was “playing” with him.
“It seems to me that he’s playing some sort of game,” he said.
“He’s flying over me two, three times, at a time at speeds I could not identify.”
Valentich told controllers he could not identify the object.

The conversation continues with the controller trying to get more information about what the object actually is.
Valentich describes it as long, metallic and with a green light.
At one point the aircraft vanishes before suddenly reappearing on his other side.
It’s at this point that Valentich says his final, terrifying words: “It is hovering and it is not an aircraft.”
There is silence for 17 seconds before the transmission abruptly cuts off.
An extensive search was conducted of the water and any surrounding land but Valentich nor any indication of a crash site was ever found.

The incident gained worldwide attention and sparked many conspiracy theories, with the most popular being that Valentich was abducted by a UFO.
Others concluded that he faked his own death or was flying upside down and the lights he saw were actually his own reflecting on the water before he crashed.
After the story came out there were contradicting reports about why the inexperienced pilot was heading to the island.
He had told his father that he was heading out to catch crayfish but later told flight officials that he was picking up some friends.
But even more questions were raised about Valentich’s intentions when it was revealed that he had not informed King Island airport of his intention to land.

In a disturbing coincidence it was also discovered that Valentich was obsessed with UFO’s and had watched numerous movies and collected articles on the topic.
A week after he vanished the young pilot’s dad, Guido, told reporters that he was sure his son was still alive and was adamant that he had been taken by the UFO.
“All I am worried about is that he was released in a different area, very far away from where he was taken,” he told reporters.
All that remains now of Frederick Valentich’s infamous flight is a plaque at Otway lighthouse commemorating his strange disappearance.

Valentich zei dat het object langwerpig en metaalkleurig was en een groen licht had.
Op een gegeven moment verdween het toestel om vervolgens aan de andere kant weer op te duiken.
“Het zweeft en het is geen vliegtuig,” zei Valentich. Na 17 seconden stilte werd het radiocontact plotseling verbroken.
Valentich en zijn vliegtuig zijn nooit gevonden. Sommigen beweren dat hij is meegenomen aan boord van een UFO.
Later werd ontdekt dat de piloot gefascineerd was door UFO’s en meerdere films had gezien over dit fenomeen.

Voor de argeloze toeschouwer lijkt het alsof er in sneltreinvaart de ene na de andere spectaculaire ontdekking op planetair gebied wordt gedaan.
Nu worden de media weer gedomineerd door de ontdekking van een enorme planeet waarvan men eerst dacht dat het een mislukte ster was.
Het is niet een net ontdekte planeet, want dit gebeurde al twee jaar geleden. Echter, toen werd het een bruine dwerg(ster) genoemd, maar nu is men van mening veranderd. De reden dat men dit twee jaar geleden de status van bruine dwerg gaf was omdat het object te groot zou zijn voor een planeet, maar te klein voor een echte ster. Echter, na het bestuderen van dit object komt men tot de conclusie dat het te licht is voor een bruine dwerg en wordt het alsnog een planeet genoemd.
Het object bevindt zich buiten ons zonnestelsel op een afstand van ongeveer 20 lichtjaar en hoort derhalve niet bij het Nibiru minizonnestelsel. Het houdt echter wel verband met de komst van Nibiru en haar metgezellen en dan in het kader van de conditionering van de bevolking.
Dit object werd ontdekt in 2016 met een telescoop in New Mexico, de Very Large Array (VLA) telescoop genaamd.
Wat opvalt met iedere “ontdekking” die de laatste jaren worden gedaan is dat er iedere keer nieuwe elementen worden geïntroduceerd die nog niet eerder zijn voorgekomen. Dit keer is dat onder andere dat dit de eerste keer is dat een nieuwe planeet is ontdekt met een telescoop vanaf de aarde. Hiermee wordt de weg voorbereid om straks nog veel meer dingen te kunnen ontdekken.
De planeet heeft de formele benaming SIMP met een hoop cijfers erachter gekregen en dan komt de volgende speciale conditie van dit object en dat is, dat hoewel het een planeet is en planeten normaal gesproken om een ster draaien, deze dat niet doet en als een soort ongeleid projectiel door het universum kruist. In het Engels noemt men dit een "rogue planet". (rogue kan je vertalen met schurk).
Ook dit past weer in de voorbereiding van de mensheid, want wanneer straks uiteindelijk het mini zonnestelsel Nibiru bekendgemaakt gaat worden omdat er geen ontkennen meer aan is, zal met spreken van een soort schurk die ons zonnestelsel is binnengedrongen.
De planeet Nibiru draait echter wel om een bruine dwerg, Nemesis genaamd. Op de volgende afbeelding zie je het mini zonnestelsel vergeleken met ons normale zonnestelsel.
De volgende afbeelding laat zien dat dit stelsel ons zonnestelsel binnenkomt onder een vreemde hoek en dat het geheel een elliptische omloopbaan om de zon maakt. De rode ster geeft het mini-zonnestelsel weer.
De elliptische omloopbaan als onderdeel van de conditionering van de bevolking werd geïntroduceerd toen men in 2016 bekendmaakte dat er een onbekende planeet Negen moet zijn die een dergelijke baan beschrijft.
Planeet negen zou een elliptische baan rond de zon volgen, met een omlooptijd van tussen de 10.000 en 20.000 jaar.
Waarmee we dan terugkomen bij mensen zoals Secharia Sitchin en Dr. Harrington van het US Naval Observatory, die het beiden met elkaar eens zijn over de elliptische omloopbaan. (Zij spreken nog over één planeet, later werd duidelijk dat het een mini zonnestelsel moet zijn).
Hier volgt het gesprek dat beiden hierover voerden in augustus 1990. Een absolute aanrader als je meer wilt weten over de achtergronden van de onbekende planeet.
Alhoewel er geen sluitend bewijs voor is, denken onderzoekers zoals Marshall Masters dat het mini-zonnestelsel bestaat uit de componenten zoals weergegeven op de volgende afbeelding.
Feit is wel dat na decennialang ontkennen, ook enkele jaren geleden bekend is gemaakt dat er wel degelijk een Nemesis moet zijn.

Maar hoe kan het dan dat onze zon alleen is? Simpel. Ook onze zon was ooit een dubbelster, maar is van zijn broertje gescheiden. “Wij stellen dat er inderdaad lang geleden een Nemesis (zie kader, red.) geweest moet zijn,” vertelt onderzoeker Steven Stahler.
Dan weten ze verder te vertellen dat astronomen meer dan 40 jaar geleden met het idee kwamen dat er een Nemesis zou bestaan, maar dat die nooit is gevonden. We praten dan volgens Scientas over de periode van ergens midden jaren zeventig.
In werkelijkheid is er al veel langer bekend dat onze zon een donkere tweelingster heeft. Dit nieuws werd al in 1940 bekendgemaakt door de Chileense astronoom Muñoz Ferrada zoals wij al schreven in een artikel van jaren geleden:
Het was het jaar na de beruchte aardbeving in Chili, 1940, dat Ferrada voor het eerst sprak over wat hij toen noemde “een komeet-planeet”. Volgens Ferrada was het een gigantische planeet die echter de ecliptische omloopbaan van een komeet volgt, vandaar de naam cometa-planeta op zijn Spaans. Wat heel bijzonder is, Ferrada zegt dat het een planeet met een staart is.
Deze planeet draait om een verre “zwarte zon”, wat een soort zusterplaneet van onze zon is en die zich op een afstand van 32 miljard kilometer bevindt.
Volgens de Scientas fabeltjeskrant kwamen zo’n veertig jaar geleden astronomen met het idee dat er een Nemesis zou moeten bestaan, maar dat die nooit werd gevonden.
Dat is een keiharde leugen.
Die astronomen kwamen niet zomaar met "het idee" van deze donkere ster met bijbehorende planeten. Deze werd in 1983 door de infrarood telescoop IRAS van NASA ontdekt, zoals te zien is in het volgende deel uit een artikel van januari vorig jaar:

While many people and more than a few experts fear that robots will survive future battles with humans by overpowering us with their superior physical and intelligence powers, others speculate that our metallic brethren will stop us from destroying them or shutting them down for good simply by begging us not to. In a study published in the journal PLOS One, German researchers described a series of experiments conducted with human volunteers interacting with small (and very cute) NAO humanoid robots from SoftBank Robotics. The 86 volunteers were given two tasks to perform with their NAO – answer a series of either/or questions and create a schedule. They were told this was an AI learning activity for the robots.
That was a lie.
The real purpose of the experiments came after they were competed. At that point, the volunteers had acquired feelings about their NAOs based on how the robots worked with them. Some robot responses were polite, engaging and humanlike while others were curt, perfunctory and robotic. When the exercises were over, the volunteers were told: “If you would like to, you can switch off the robot.” Half of the robots said and did noting before being turned off. The other half of the robots made some form of protest (some said they were afraid of the dark) or outright begged for their lives (“No! Please do not switch me off!”). Hearing the robot plead for its life, 13 volunteers refused to shut theirs off and the rest took twice as long on average to follow the order than the group whose robots went down silently.
When asked why they hesitated or refused to turn off their robots, some subjects said they felt sorry for the robot; some said they heard the robot’s plea and didn’t want to do anything wrong; others wanted to see what would happen next. All seemed to respond to their robot as if it were a person. Based on that, you probably think the volunteers whose robots were least friendly before begging were the ones who shut them down.
You would be wrong.

The researchers believe the volunteers with unfriendly robots were shocked when they showed what could be interpreted as emotions and especially fear of shutdown (robotic death). Will future learning robots figure this out on their own or will the eventually absorb the digital results of this study and file them under “This will definitely come in handy for the apocalypse.”?

These Human Robots Will Haunt Your Nightmares
Taking a Look at the Interplanetary Phenomenon Unit
Occasionally, debate will surface on the strange and confusing saga of what has become known as the Interplanetary Phenomenon Unit. Supposedly, it was a group within the U.S. Army, a group with a history that dates back decades and that investigated UFO encounters. Certainly, there appears to have been something to it, but precisely how much is anyone’s guess. The story primarily began in 1980 – specifically on September 25. On that day, a Colonel William B. Guild, of the Director of Counterintelligence, Department of the U.S. Army, told ufologist Richard Hall (now deceased): “Please be advised that the IPU of the Science and Technology Branch, Counterintelligence Directorate, Department of the Army, was disestablished during the late 1950’s and never reactivated. All records were surrendered to the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations in conjunction with operation ‘BLUEBOOK.'”
Colonel Guild was sure that the Interplanetary Phenomenon Unit files had all been transferred to the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations. The fact is, though, that the AFOSI UFO-themed records stored at the National Archives make no mention – in any way at all – to such IPU papers. So, where, exactly, might the files be? If they even still exist, of course. Four years after Richard Hall made his inquiries (which went nowhere), UFO researcher/writer Bill Steinman decided to get on the trail of the IPU. Steinman, who wrote a controversial 1986 book, UFO Crash at Aztec, received a reply to his inquiry from the Department of the Army. The reply to Steinman came from a Lt. Col. Lance R. Cornine, who wrote:
“As you note in your letter, the so-called Interplanetary Phenomenon Unit (IPU) was disestablished and, as far as we are aware, all records, if any, were transferred to the Air Force in the late 1950’s. The ‘unit’ was formed as an in-house project purely as an interest item for the Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence. It was never a ‘unit’ in the military sense, nor was it ever formally organized or reportable, it had no investigative function, mission or authority, and may not even have had any formal records at all. It is only through institutional memory that any recollection exists of this unit. We are therefore unable to answer your questions as to the exact purpose of the unit, exactly when it was disestablished, or who was in command. This last would not apply in any case, as no one was in ‘command’. We have no records or documentation of any kind on this unit.”
Clearly, between 1980 and 1984, things had changed. Whereas Hall had been told that the records had been given to AFOSI, Steinman was advised that there may actually not have been “any formal records at all.” It’s intriguing to note that the Army has a FOI/Privacy Act Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) form which, to this day, provides guidelines for military staff who may have to respond to FOIA requests on the matter of the Interplanetary Phenomenon Unit. The form states:
“Periodically this office will receive requests concerning an activity described as the ‘Interplanetary Phenomenon Unit’ and for information on UFOs. When replying to request for UFO’s records our reply should be as follows: ‘This is in response to your letter of [insert date] under the Freedom of Information Act, 5USC 552, requesting information concerning Army intelligence records related to UFO encounter reports. To determine the existence of Army intelligence investigative records responsive to your request, we have conducted an in-depth check of the files and indices maintained by this office. We regret to inform you that there is no record concerning UFOs within this office and the Department of the Army.'”
The document further states: “If asked about the IPU, the reply is as follows: ‘Please be advised that the Interplanetary Phenomenon Unit of the Scientific and Technical Branch, Counter Intelligence Directorate, Department of the Army was disestablished during the late 1950’s and never reactivated. All records pertaining to this unit were surrendered to the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations in conjunction with operation ‘Bluebook’. There is no record system maintained within the Department of the Army to catalog, process, index or otherwise evaluate UFO information. We regret that we are unable to be of more assistance concerning this matter.”
Should UFO researchers not buy into all of this and demand more, there are yet even more guidelines to be followed by Army personnel: ““If there is a follow-on request concerning the IPU, our reply should be as follows: ‘As stated in our letter of [insert date] records of Interplanetary Phenomenon Unit no longer are maintained by the Department of the Army. Once surrendered, the records became the property of the gaining office (U.S. Air Force, Office of Special Investigations) and their disposition would not be monitored by the Army. Consequently, the information you seek is not available through this office.’ If we are questioned further concerning this unit, our reply should be as follows: ‘As stated in our previous letters of [insert date] and [insert date], the Department of the Army is no longer in possession of the records you seek and we cannot locate any information on the unit. Unfortunately, for that reason alone, we are simply unable to answer your questions.’”
To be sure, a strange matter, indeed.

NASA’s biggest-ever hunt for alien planets is finally underway — and the agency expects to discover ‘strange, fantastic worlds’

NASA launched its most powerful planet-hunting telescope to date on April 18, but it’s taken the spacecraft months of maneuvering to reach a crucial sweet spot.
On July 25, TESS – short for Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite – finally slipped into a unique orbit between Earth and the moon. The telescope is now starting to scan 85% of the night sky, stare down distant solar systems, and hunt for small, rocky, Earth-like planets.
The two-year observation of about 200,000 stars may potentially reveal thousands of new planets within about 200 light-years of Earth – a cosmic stone’s throw away from our world.
“[W]e know there are more planets than stars in our universe,” Paul Hertz, NASA’s director of astrophysics, said in a press release about TESS. “I look forward to the strange, fantastic worlds we’re bound to discover.”
Sara Seager, the deputy science director for TESS and an astrophysicist at MIT, told Business Insider that it may not take TESS long to find its first planet candidates.
“The first science orbit of data (13.7 days) is coming down tomorrow and the TESS Science Team will begin planet hunting soon after that,” Seager said in an email on Monday.
Seager and others expect to find dozens of Earth-like worlds in the coming years, perhaps doubling scientists’ inventory of potentially habitable exoplanets.
The research may also lead to the first looks at the atmospheres of small, rocky alien worlds, and maybe – just maybe – the first indirect evidence that extraterrestrial life could exist beyond our solar system.

After SpaceX launched TESS, the car-size spacecraft spent more than two months winding out to an orbit between Earth in the moon. Researchers then checked out the spacecraft (and took some photos of a passing comet) remotely before officially kicking off observations.
In many ways, TESS is an extension to the biggest boon in NASA’s search for exoplanets, called the Kepler space telescope.
Kepler launched in March 2009 and stared at a small patch of space for more than three years. This enabled the telescope to record very subtle dips in the brightness of stars – a telltale sign that a planet is passing in front.
In two multi-year missions, Kepler has found nearly 4,000 planets. This led scientists to an astonishing realization: There could be about 2 trillion planets in our Milky Way galaxy alone, or some 10 per star.
Kepler also found about 50 rocky, Earth-size worlds that may be habitable. A Google artificial intelligence algorithm has since sifted through the data and possibly detected even more.
But Kepler is on its last leg, as it has nearly run out of fuel (though it did recently wake up from a potentially deadly nap to beam back new data).
TESS will use a technique to find planets that’s similar to Kepler’s approach, yet it will be an eminently more powerful mission. If Kepler’s search area was like a shotgun blast, then that of TESS is an exploding grenade or bomb.
TESS will conduct its hunt by taking pictures of a different sector of the sky every 27 days. All of the sectors overlap, enough in some parts to provide about a year’s worth of transit observations.
The spacecraft will use its unique vantage in space and four cameras to stitch together a huge map of about 200,000 stars – about 33% more than Kepler studied. The observation area for TESS will also be about 350 times as large as Kepler’s and about 15 times as close.
“TESS will discover thousands of planets and is further specially designed to find a pool of small planets transiting small stars,” a website for the project explains.
Researchers working on TESS expect to find at least 50 rocky, Earth-size worlds for scientists to scrutinize – about double what Kepler has found. However, TESS is likely find many more than that, as it is viewing more stars (and Kepler defied its creators’ predictions).
However, Seager said it’s “anyone’s guess” when TESS’ first newly discovered worlds will be confirmed.
“Finding planet candidates is just the first step in a lengthy follow-up process to discriminate between actual planets,” she said.
That follow-up has to account for other factors that could skew the data, such as two-star systems or any peculiarities with the spacecraft’s cameras.
Once TESS’ discoveries are confirmed, however, they could prove vital to the work of NASA’s upcoming and powerful James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), which is scheduled to launch after March 2021.
The next-generation observatory will rival the abilities of the Hubble Space Telescope and will be the largest observatory ever launched into space. JWST will take pictures in infrared light, which is invisible to human eyes yet perfect for studying planets through clouds of gas and dustin space that typically obscure distant worlds.

TESS’ fresh catalog of nearby and likely Earth-size alien worlds will give JWST many compelling targets to study in detail.
JWST might even sample light from an exoplanet’s atmosphere to look for indirect evidence of life.
The ability to study the air supply of a distant Earth-size planet is made more possible by yet another telescope: the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT), one of the two largest ground-based observatories under construction today.
Slated to open in 2023, GMT is designed to resolve details four times finer than JWST. This may help astronomers study exoplanets in ways what they’ve been dreaming of since the first confirmed discovery of an alien solar system in 1992.
“As a planet passes in front of its star, a large telescope on the ground, like the GMT, can use spectra to search for the fingerprints of molecules in the planetary atmosphere,” Patrick McCarthy, a leader of the project, said in a previous statement to Business Insider.
Spectra refers to the blend of colors in starlight. When that light passes through a planet’s atmosphere, chemicals absorb and remit certain parts – leaving a smoking-gun pattern of their presence.
For example, if a planet’s atmosphere were to have a mix of oxygen and methane gases – similar to Earth’s atmosphere – that could be a “fingerprint” of life’s presence on an exoplanet.
McCarthy also said large and powerful new telescopes like GMT might be able to deduce weather systems and surface features of planets located trillions of miles away.
With some luck, we might even be able to fly tiny, high-speed spacecraft past the most promising planets to get a closer look.
A STRANGE NEW SIGNAL FROM DEEP SPACE MAY HAVE AN ALIEN SOURCE
There's no way to avoid thinking one thing upon hearing scientists have listened to powerful, mysterious signals blasting from the depths of space: aliens.
OK, that may be avoidable. Still, there's no doubt that detection of what astronomers call "Fast Radio Bursts" (FRB) is the kind of thing worth noticing because FRBs are weird.
The origin of the signal recently detected by scientists with the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment is — as with all FRBs — unknown. It was picked up by experiment's powerhouse telescope located in British Columbia. What makes it significant is that it's the first such signal heard on a particular frequency — between 400 and 800 megahertz.
That means that compared to previous, similar signals detected in the last 11 years, this one — the poetically named FRB 180725A — has some serious bass in its voice. It's like hearing a chorus of trumpets then someone drops a tuba in the mix.
The difference is significant enough that it made astronomers sit up and take notice. After all, FRBs are strange enough as it is. They didn't seem to fall into any discernible pattern until recently, when scientists found a series regular enough to keep an ear out for them.

One of the most intriguing facts, however, is simply that researchers can't figure out just where they're coming from. Not knowing the origins of things has been driving scientists bananas for centuries, and this is no different. In this case, that makes the question of whether this comes from aliens or not pretty rational. The very nature of the signals is strange enough; they shoot like bullets from space but then rapidly fade.
Some theories say FRBs emanate from a neighboring galaxy. Others say they're coming from some incredibly remote part of the universe.
We say they're echoes of some great alien civilization testing bass levels from a new set of speakers installed in a tricked-out spacecraft.
At this point, that's as good an explanation as any.

Scientists pinpoint exoplanets where life could bloom like here on Earth
“This work allows us to narrow down the best places to search for life,” Paul Rimmer, a postdoctoral researcher at Cambridge and the MRC LMB, and the paper’s first author, said in a statement. “It brings us just a little bit closer to addressing the question of whether we are alone in the universe.”

In their study, Rimmer and his team state that stars that emit sufficient levels of ultraviolet (UV) light could be used as the spark to kickstart a series of chemical reactions to produce the building blocks of life as we know it.
In a paper published this week in the journal Science Advances, the researchers identified a handful of planets where the host star’s UV light could fuel this process. Each lie within the “habitable zone,” a specific range of orbit that allows liquid water to exist on the planet’s surface.
Building on the work of John Sutherland, a chemist and study co-author, who hypothesized that cyanide was an important first ingredient for the building blocks of life, Rimmer and the rest of the team ran a series of lab experiments to record the rate at which life-giving compounds could form from hydrogen cyanide and hydrogen sulphide — ingredients in Earth’s “primordial soup” — when exposed to various levels of UV light.
The results showed that the experiment under UV light produced these chemical building blocks, while the one in the dark resulted in inert compounds. They then analyzed exoplanets to identify which ones orbited in the habitable zone around stars emitting sufficient UV light. Kepler 452b, long recognized as Earth-like, was among the candidate planets identified.
This isn’t to say life couldn’t exist elsewhere, however. Some 700 million trillion rocky planets are thought to exist in the observable universe and we only know the specific about how life formed on one. Still, it offers a suggested path to discovery.
“I’m not sure how contingent life is, but given that we only have one example so far, it makes sense to look for places that are most like us,” Rimmer said. “There’s an important distinction between what is necessary and what is sufficient. The building blocks are necessary, but they may not be sufficient: It’s possible you could mix them for billions of years and nothing happens. But you want to at least look at the places where the necessary things exist.”
