On June 2, 2018, residents in Botswana were shocked to see a huge fireball explode in the sky. In fact, the white glow of the asteroid exploding in the air was so bright that it was about 20,000 times brighter than the full moon. Researchers went to the Kalahari Desert to look for pieces of the asteroid and they found 23 fragments.

A team of experts located a fragment of the asteroid 2018 LA in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve in the southern African nation of Botswana. The asteroid fell from space on June 2, 2018, and the team found this fragment three weeks later on June 23.

Interestingly, the asteroid – which has been named 2018 LA – was spotted by the University of Arizona’s Catalina Sky Survey team approximately eight hours before it reached our planet but since it was only six feet across, they didn’t think it was dangerous so they didn’t alert anybody.

And now, almost three years later, scientists have revealed more information regarding the 2018 LA asteroid – more specifically, its 22-million-year journey to Earth. First of all, the asteroid, which weighed approximately 5.7 tons, exploded 27 kilometers above the ground (17 miles) while traveling at a speed of about 60,000 km/h (just over 37,000 mph).

Scientists were able to precisely map out the journey the asteroid took through space – this is the first time it’s ever been done. “I could hardly believe my eyes when I came upon an object that appeared to be moving across images taken by SkyMapper,” said astronomer Christopher Onken. SkyMapper is a 1.35-meter wide-field survey telescope at the Siding Spring Observatory in New South Wales.

They were able to pinpoint its origins to the second biggest asteroid in our Solar System named 4 Vesta. This asteroid, which has a diameter of approximately 525 kilometers (326 miles), is occasionally “…bright enough to be sometimes visible to the unaided eye,” Dr. Onken noted.

It is believed that around 22 million years ago, 2018 LA broke off of 4 Vesta because of a massive impact with another asteroid that made Vesta’s Veneneia basin. Astronomer Hadrien Devillepoix went into further details, “Analysis of the meteorites from 2018LA indicate it was deeply buried under the surface of Vesta prior to being ejected all those years ago.” After it broke off from the larger body, it began its 22-million-year journey towards Earth, ending up in the Kalahari Desert.

After the fragments of 2018 LA were found, they were analyzed and experts found zircon grains that date back over 4.5 billion years. This means that the asteroid dates back to when our Solar System was first forming. Pictures of the 2018 LA fragments can be seen here.

Mitch Kuhne was driving back to the Gold Coast along the Hume Highway near Bardia, Sydney just before 8pm on Sunday when he claims to have spotted a small child standing on the road. 

Mr Kuhne reported and claims he was later told by an officer that the child had been found but police have since said that while a search was conducted no child was discovered in the area. 

When we take a closer look at the "ghost" child then the shape of the figure resembles that of the so-called Nightcrawlers.

These peculiar creatures drift eerily through the night, leaving many wondering if their origins are earthly or extra\terrestrial. 

According to Native American folklore, these creatures, strange upright standing thin creatures with no arms, have existed for hundreds of years and have lived along-side humans peacefully. 

Despite there is very little evidence to prove that these so-called Nightcrawlers are real undiscovered cryptids, in 2011, there have been multiple CCTV camera sightings of strange upright standing thin creatures with no arms walking endlessly at night. 

The first appearance of a Nightcrawler took place in Fresno, California and the second appearance took place in Yosemite National Park.

Puerto Rico UFO Sighting Investigated

Scientists find explanations on a series of incidents involving a UFO observed in and around the Aguadilla, Puerto Rico airport in April 2013.

The Scientific Coalition for UAP, which is composed of a team of analysts focusing on unidentified aerial phenomena, has examined thermal, visual and sensor data showing the unidentified flying object hurtling through the sky then skimming through the water and splitting into two.

There have been theories on the phenomenon, with some speculating a Chinese lantern and others saying a Mylar balloon. However, Rich Hoffman, a co-founder of SCU, says none of these ideas could be proven. The team at SCU has been working their best to find an explanation and testing these theories but has come up with nothing.

They looked to see if there was any propulsion system but found nothing. They then consider the balloon theory, but the object’s thermal did not match a balloon. Additionally, the object in question has split.

They then looked into the possibility it could be a bird, but the thermal result also did not match that of a bird. Also, the bird would not split into two identical pieces.

In Search of Varginha’s UFO – “Aliens” in the Amazon or Collective Insanity?

Today we are going to review one of the most famous UFO files in all of Brazil , the Varginha Incident . Celebrated as the Amazonian Roswell , the event that occurred in 1996 continues to divide the world ufological community. Let’s get the facts.

Year 1996. UFO Invasion in the Amazon

“Varginha, January 20, 1996. It would be a normal day in the quiet city of 100,000 inhabitants south of Minas, but the report of three girls changed everything. They said they saw a strange, short, red-eyed creature that did not appear to be from this world. Overnight, investigators and countless witnesses started talking about the ‘Varginha ET. Samantha Silva and Régis Melo. Varginha’s ET: case turns 20 with mysteries and uncertainties , 2016.

In January 1996 the municipality of Varginha , located in the southwest of the state of Minas Gerais , witnessed an unusual event.

According to reports from the time, on 20 January of 1996 at 15:30 hours, residents of the area complained, the collision of unknown flying objects, and subsequent recovery of two occupants, kidnapped, as was rumored, by military personnel. The news shocked Brazil , being covered by countless media.

The case from its inception was surrounded by much controversy, especially due to government silence, which did its best to discourage any investigation. But the attention remained, and 25 years later, what happened in Varginha , continues to generate furious counterpoints. The truth is, unlike other incidents, Varginha has many witnesses, both local and military, who even today defend their positions on what happened so many years ago. Let’s get back to the case.

Perhaps one of the most astonishing testimonies is that provided by three witnesses, young women who claimed to observe an alien presence.

Those beings were baptized as the Etzinhos , according to the newspaper La Tercera, in its article, ” Varghina case: two decades for the Brazilian Roswell” :

“One meter tall, red eyes, shiny brown skin. They had three bumps on their forehead, a very small mouth-like opening, bulging veins on their neck, shoulders, and arms. They produced a strange sound as if they were bees, and they had very thin bodies ”.

In another paragraph it stands out:

“Another important event within this experience was that several inhabitants of Varginha witnessed the presence of a strange flying sphere on January 22, 22 and 23, who even said that it gave them the impression of acting like a mother looking for to his children. In those same days they caught the two beings and transferred them to the state of Sao Paulo for their examination and study ”.

In 1995 the world was shaken, when a supposed short film was revealed, showing the autopsy performed on an alien recovered in Roswell. A week before the event, an aviation pilot Carlos de Souza , while flying in the interior of Minas Gerais , claimed to observe a huge ship-like object. In the book published by ufologist Ubirajara Rodrigues , O Caso Varginha , 2001 , Souza delivers a shocking version, stating that he saw the ship crash somewhere between Varginha and Três Corações .

Writes Ubirajara Rodrigues :

“He went into a side road to see if he was (and helped) in the crash of what appeared to be an aircraft. Once there, he was surprised to see that the Army and the Military Police were already surrounding the remains of that indefinable object. Gray chunks of what looked like metal were scattered across the ground. He saw no victims. Some time later, one of the soldiers brusquely invited him to leave the scene. He shouldn’t say anything about what he had seen. “

His testimony coincides with the version given by the Freitas couple , both residents asserting that they observe a gigantic steel-gray ship, which silently glides, surrounded by a lot of smoke, as if it were going to crash.

Other mind-boggling facts point to a strange storm shaking Varginha , and the reported existence of a toxic scent that is even noted as the cause of death for animals, and even a soldier.

The matter suffered heavy censorship, and many wondered if Varginha was just the product of a collective psychosis. Let’s see.

Alien autopsy, and the shadow of Roswell

In August 1985, the ufological world was amazed at the irruption of a strange short film, denouncing the recreation of a supposed alien autopsy. The film was said to show the body recovered from a ship crashed in Roswell during 1947 . Although the controversy would later erupt, revealing a monumental fraud, the media explosion was unstoppable, re-staging the extraterrestrial discussion . It is curious that the film appeared two years before, the forty-seventh birthday of the events that occurred in Roswell.

Many ufologists felt the infamous images presented by Ray Santilli , a mentor of its commercialization, influenced in trying to dirty the case, seeking to ridicule it.

The US military breathed a sigh of relief, and later issued a statement, denying their involvement in some kind of cover-up, and making it clear, Roswell, was part of a popular myth. It had never happened.

When the Varginha file is studied , we see certain parallels with what is narrated here. It is undeniable that the Autopsy of Roswell , generated an impact on the public imagination difficult to assess. Many critics argue, Varginha’s birth is intertwined with the Roswell case .

And as I say the intricacies is disturbing. But as we will see next, the answers are not so easy. Let’s examine a few points.

Varginha case , and the mystery of NORAD

“The memorable event occurred on the night of January 19-20, 1996 in the vicinity of the small Brazilian town of Varginha. On the night in question, the CINDACTA air surveillance center received radar data on a flying object from American colleagues at NORAD. Those of us who live in South America know about the relationships, sometimes close, sometimes complex, that the United States has with the countries of the region. In the case of Brazil , this link is long-standing, established during the Second World War .

That is why it is not easy to decipher, Brazil plays a key role as an ally, maintaining close communication with the United States , especially with regard to military cooperation between the two countries. This brief reference allows us to understand certain aspects that will now be analyzed.

It happens while I deepen Varginha , highlights as the first spicy data, the mention of NORAD , ( North American Aerospace Defense Command ). This body was created in 1958, during the Cold War , with the objective of providing surveillance to North American airspace, especially with regard to ballistic missiles. NORAD currently focuses its operations on combating drug trafficking. Its base is in the Cheyenne Mountains , Colorado . One of the most iconic films of the eighties, War Games , was filmed there .

Well, regarding Varginha , we are told at dawn on January 20, 1996, NORAD alerted the Brazilian Air Force through the CINDACTA ( Integrated Center for Air Defense and Air Navigation Control ) , that unknown objects were penetrating the southwestern region of Minas Gerais . The data provided by NORAD , would have had SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) as emitter, station located in New Mexico . Once notified, the Brazilian military would have deployed F17 fighters, and V2 bombers , which took off from their air bases, on patrol mission.

In this report we are discussing unofficially, some researchers speculate, parallel to the movements carried forward by his counterpart from Brazil , the United States would be sent to the South American country, a specialized team, nothing less Boinas Verdes .

The story continues, with alien bodies recovered from the Varginha crash , evidence later transferred to the United States . When questioned any Brazilian military , he will emphatically deny any point of this story, arguing confusion, exaggeration, and fraud in its construction. It is also interesting to note, until a few years ago, these same soldiers denied having UFO records in their files.

However, in 2017 , there was a small declassification, and to greater surprise, a report of a sighting recorded in Varginha appeared , dated from 1971 . The UFO would have been parked on the roof of a house, emitting a loud noise, causing the resident to faint. He was also reported, prowling the facilities of the School of Sergeants of Arms , an Army unit in Três Corações ( Minas Gerais) , a municipality near Varginha that is 287 km from Belo Horizonte.

UNICAMP. Small Area 51 of Brazil?

“In the second semester of 1996, Dr. Badan, after giving a lecture at a law school in Campinas, was interrogated by a student with the question:“ Is it true that they did an autopsy on the creatures captured in Varginha? ? ”. To which the doctor replied: “If this question were asked in a few years, perhaps he could answer it with greater freedom and precision.”

In another twist of the case, there is the presumption that a being from another world was the subject of an autopsy, after being captured in Varginha . The popular UNICAMP ( Campinas State University ) study center, based in São Paulo , is mentioned as the site that received the body of the space creature. Information widely rejected by the prestigious academic house, founded in 1966, focused on promoting science and technology.

All the occupants of the UFOs, living or dead rescued in Brazil , would be taken there.

The ufologist Ricardo Roehe , maintains that its construction underground prevents the received aliens from being able to communicate telepathically with other companions, as well as controlling their mental powers. Apparently the United States would use it as a parallel center, to also conduct its own studies of captured UFO occupants.

5. VENUS

We know, we know. Venus. Some might say it is toxic, hot, and inhospitable. And they are right. But Mars is deadly too, albeit in the opposite direction. Just as Venus is extremely hot, Mars is frigid cold. Venus has a thick, poisonous atmosphere, but Mars has a paper-thin one. Mars has all that radiation exposure to boot, which doesn’t sound that nice.

For Empire Strikes Back fans irresistibly drawn to the idea of living in a Cloud City, NASA has a plan. Storm IV Twin-Pod cloud car not included. Meet HAVOC — or the High Altitude Venus Operational Concept. HAVOC is basically a blimp and a fleet of other buoyant vehicles designed to explore Venus with humans on board.

“VENUS... CAN PLAY A ROLE IN HUMANITY’S FUTURE IN SPACE.”

The truly inhospitable region of Venus lies far below, near, and at the surface. About 30 miles above the surface, temperatures are actually Earth-like. At this altitude, atmospheric pressure is also similar to Earth at sea level. There’s also similar radiation protection at that level. The air isn’t breathable, but the other factors mean spacesuits for venturing outside — like on an observation deck — wouldn’t be overly bulky affairs. HAVOC is still on the drawing board, but the preliminary design calls for a craft that would allow two astronauts to live on Venus for 30 days. Or above it, at least.

The paper introducing HAVOC as a concept reveals ambitions for the world. HAVOC phase I is to send robots to Venus’ clouds. Phases II through IV are composed of increasingly ambitious human missions of increasingly long stays. The goal for Phase V? Permanent human habitation of a Venus cloud city.

“Ultimately, the authors conclude that Venus, with its relatively hospitable upper atmosphere, can play a role in humanity’s future in space,” the authors write in the paper.

Who are we to argue?

• The Inverse analysis: Steampunk fans may love living on an airship, and Earth-like pressure at high altitudes could make for less clunky spacesuits. But one small failure could spell major doom for would-be Venusians.

4. MARS

“There are three reasons underlying the case for Mars,” Robert Zubrin tells Inverse. “For the science, for the challenge, and for the future.” Zubrin should know — he is the founder of the Mars Society, which advocates for moving humans to Mars as soon as possible.

To understand Zubrin’s passion for the Red Planet, let’s break those three elements down — the science, the challenge, and the future. The science refers to the question we could soon answer: if there was life on Mars. If there is life on Mars, even. The challenge is a throwback to the space race that led to Apollo, and a sort of knock-on effect that draws more dreamers to the sciences. The future is the idea of humanity staking a permanent future off-Earth.

Zubrin says has all the resources we need, if we can harness them correctly:

• Water: while surface water is only found seasonally and in small amounts laden with toxins, recent discoveries could make potable water possible by looking underground
• Soil: The soil of Mars is laden with iron and nasty salts, but experiments with growing crops in Mars-like soil have found some success.
• Lava tubes: Rather than building expensive structures or risking inflatable habitats, a la The Martian, a series of caves on Mars built by long-dormant volcanoes could create a radiation-shielded environment. Just add oxygen.

Humanity’s transition to Mars is inevitable, as far as Zubrin is concerned. It will happen in four phases, he says: exploration is the first step before we set up a Mars base, which we can springboard into cities somewhere in between Musk and Total Recall, and from there, entire societies can flourish. Zubrin doesn’t see human movement on Mars as monolithic. Like Earth, different groups will settle in, and pursue different values and goals. The planet will bring them new opportunities to practice the forms of governance and beliefs they wish they could on Earth, he says.

Ultimately, Mars offers a chance for renewal and a clean slate. And it is a mere six-month flight away. Deliverance has never been so handy.

“THE GOAL IS THE STARS.”

The resources of Mars could also be a launching pad for further exploration, Zubrin says. Methane and water on the planet can be used to create rocket fuel. After Mars, the next jump is the asteroid belt. And after that?

“The goal is the stars,” Zubrin says. “As humans become spacefarers, we’re going to learn a lot more about the stars, about the planets orbiting the stars.”

What if there’s already life on Mars, and it is still alive? Zubrin says that most of the arguments for current life on Mars are easily refuted, so humanity can rest easy there. One of the biggest criticisms of potential human settlements on Mars is the idea of cross-contamination: Either that humans will incidentally kill off whatever life there is on the Red Planet, or conversely, that that life could threaten us instead.

But one way we know about the conditions on Mars is because chunks of it frequently fall to Earth, products of impacts ejected across interplanetary distances. “The issue of back contamination which is the one that gets the biggest headlines is nonsense,” Zubrin says. “We’ve been getting materials from Earth every year for four billion years.”

Carl Sagan once said, "If there is life on Mars, I believe we should do nothing with Mars. Mars then belongs to the Martians, even if they are only microbes." But Zubrin calls this an “aesthetic issue.” He says, for instance, that on Earth, we happily murder microbes all day, every day — mouthwash, antibiotics, household cleaners — our poisons are as varied as they are effective. And yet, we don’t regard these acts of destruction on our own planet as an ethical issue. “I think that Sagan got carried away in a poetic fit when he made that statement,” Zubrin says.

“The idea that an entire planet — the whole potential of a new biosphere of not only people but of an entire assortment of wonderful plants and animals that could grow in flourish on Mars — should be abluted because there are microbes on Mars is absurd and I would say unethical to say that people should not exist on Mars so that it can be safe for microbes.”

• The Inverse analysis: Despite sub-Antarctic temperatures, space radiation, and other hazards at least there’s terra firma (martis ferma?) to stand on and a gateway to the rest of the Solar System and points beyond. Just hope nothing goes wrong.

3. PROXIMA CENTAURI B

When it comes to planets in the solar system to use as humanity’s ark, the pickings are slim. We’ve got Mars. We’ve (sort of) got Venus. Beyond that, the only terrestrial planet left — Mercury — is too hot on one side and absolutely frigid on the other. It’s also notoriously hard to get to thanks to the gravity of the Sun. Jupiter’s out — we would fry in a bath of radiation. The other gas planets aren’t hospitable either.

So maybe we just build a generation ship or pray for a warp drive and punt ourselves a star system over. And where better to aim than Proxima Centauri?

Abel Mendez is the director of the Planetary Habitability Laboratory (PHL) at the University of Puerto Rico Arecibo. Mendez has maintained the Habitable Exoplanets Catalog for 10 years. At the time the catalog began, the number of potentially habitable exoplanets was scant: Back then, it was made up of just Gliese 667 C f, and the contentious and ever-evolving planets in the Gliese 581 system. (Gliese, in this case, refers to a star catalog — while the stars are 20 and 23 light-years away from Earth, respectively, they’re not close to each other.)

Since then, the number has beefed up to 60 potentially habitable worlds if we’re lucky, or 24 if we’re being realistic. Mendez uses a rubric to rate these worlds using a few factors:

• Are they close enough to their star to be warm, but not too hot, or too cold? This would mean water could exist in its liquid state.
• Are they somewhere in between Mars and an Earth-and-a-half in radius? This would probably place them close to Earth-mass, and thus likely rocky.
• If we don’t know the radius, are they less than five times the mass of Earth? This would again make for a planet that, at the upper limit, would be a very heavy but still rocky planet, rather than a gaseous mini-Neptune.

Of the 4,375 known exoplanets (as of April 16, 2021, according to NASA), this rubric means only 24 of them are potentially habitable. But the right size and distance are only two of the things we need for habitability in reality. Beyond these traits, we don’t have much other information to go on.

This is why Mendez says if we had to go somewhere beyond the Solar System, we should go somewhere close.

“Otherwise we cannot tell, but assuming that information there is right … I think the planets I would prefer to visit are the nearby ones,” he says. And there’s no habitable planet closer than Proxima Centauri b.

Alpha Centauri A and B are pretty well known. They’re the closest stars the size of the Sun to Earth. But they aren’t quite the closest star. The two stars orbit each other. But about .12 light-years out — around 7600 times the distance of the Sun to Earth — they have a faint companion. Alpha Centauri A and B have been known since antiquity and known to be two separate stars since 1689. Their companion, Proxima Centauri, is so small and faint that it wasn’t discovered until 1915.

“I THINK THE PLANETS I WOULD PREFER TO VISIT ARE THE NEARBY ONES.”

And while the Alphas Centauri are 4.37 light-years from Earth, that smidge of difference in distance puts Proxima Centauri just a fraction closer to Earth.

We’ve looked time and time again for planets around one of the Alphas Centauri, usually coming up short. But in 2016, astronomers working as part of the Pale Red Dot project used decades of data on Proxima Centauri to draw out the existence of a possible planet, Proxima Centauri b. This planet is likely around the mass of Earth, and orbits in a tight 11-day loop around its star.

While such a close orbit sounds like a recipe for disaster — Mercury, after all, orbits the Sun in 88 days — the small size and mass of Proxima Centauri and its lower temperatures mean that the planet could be habitable, under the right conditions. The star Proxima Centauri is only 20 percent larger than Jupiter and is just 12 percent the mass of the Sun. It’s classified as a red dwarf, also called an M-dwarf star. These stars are the least massive and most common types of stars in the universe. Not surprisingly, many of the planets on PHL’s index are M-dwarf stars. Only three are not.

But — and there’s always a but — that doesn’t mean Proxima Centauri b is much like Earth. With that close an orbit, the planet faces the same side of the star at all times, the same way we only see one face of the Moon. This process is called tidal locking, and it is part of why Mercury is so inhospitable.

“I think that most of these planets are probably tidally locked because there are around M-dwarf stars, and even if they have an atmosphere, water will be locked as ice on the dark side, and the dayside will be a desert,” Mendez says.

But in between the two sides is a little sliver of liminal space that’s neither day nor night — a place of perpetual twilight. That’s where liquid water might exist, and life might flourish.

There’s also the problem of atmospheres. Red dwarfs are small stars, but early in their history, they thrash around violently with flares — which can blow away the primordial atmospheres of planets out into the cosmos. So we have to hope that Proxima Centauri b was able to regrow an atmosphere and that it’s something like Earth, and not, say, Venus or Mars.

• The Inverse analysis: It’s close and in the right place to have life, but a lack of known details and a potentially hazardous star mean we shouldn’t go quite yet.
• Habitable rating: ❓❓🤷🤷🤷

2. TRAPPIST-1D

In 2015, Belgian astronomers working on the Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope (TRAPPIST) project announced a new star, dubbed (entirely by coincidence and not for promotion reasons, we are sure) TRAPPIST-1.

It’s small — about the size of Jupiter — and less massive even than Proxima Centauri. In fact, at 8.9 percent the mass of the Sun, it’s barely over the threshold of having enough mass to ignite. TRAPPIST-1 wasn’t alone — the astronomers announced three Earth-sized planets in orbit. And all three are potentially habitable.

It was big news at the time. Three worlds a sneeze of a distance apart, all temperate enough to hold water, all around a fairly calm, tiny star. But subsequent studies pulled a real “hold my beer” and hit us with four more planets in orbit around TRAPPIST-1. All of them were close enough to be temperate too. Tiny but mighty, indeed.

Suddenly, we have a very tantalizing system on our hands. The PHL index lists TRAPPIST-1d as the likeliest of all of them to have Earth-like conditions. But it’s not a one-one comparison. The planet is thought to be somewhere in between Mars and Earth in size. It’s got an Earth-like amount of radiation from its star and thus, likely, similar temperatures, too.

So let’s go there!

Or not. It might be just a little too hot, according to a 2018 study. "We are modeling unfamiliar atmospheres, not just assuming that the things we see in the solar system will look the same way around another star," a statement from the authors reads. In short, they say TRAPPIST-1d may be more Venus-like than we might like for habitability.

They also argue:

• TRAPPIST-1b may be far, far too hot — maybe even too hot for an atmosphere at all.
• TRAPPIST-1c and TRAPPIST-1d have thick atmospheres which create intense greenhouse effects.
• TRAPPIST-1f, TRAPPIST-1g, and TRAPPIST-1h might be too icy.

They conclude that TRAPPIST-1e may be the real world we should look to. The answer isn’t definitive though. And we likely won’t know anything until we can get a close look at the system via next-generation telescopes like the James Webb Space Telescope.

“IF ONE PLANET DOESN’T WORK, YOU JUST MOVE TO ANOTHER PLANET.”

But if we go to TRAPPIST-1 and any one planet isn’t quite right, we could just jump to the next one — most of them are less than a million miles apart. If we don’t like TRAPPIST-1d, then TRAPPIST-1e is a mere 650,000-mile journey. Earth is 238,000 miles from the Moon. It took three days for Apollo astronauts to get to the Moon.

It’s not the six-month trip to Mars humans would experience — it’d be more like an extended business trip.

“You have seven planets, some in the habitable zone,” Mendez says. “You have in one system everything possible, and multiple planets with those conditions, hot or cold.”

The term Goldilocks Zone is sometimes used in place of the habitable zone. Not too hot, not too cold, just right. But TRAPPIST-1 plays with that by making for a Goldilocks system where, in a few days, we can make our way in between the planets. Even the farthest out of the planets is only 1,400,000 miles from its home star.

“If one planet doesn’t work, you just move to another planet,” Mendez says.

And what’s more, it’s only 40 light-years away. Sure, that’s 10 times the distance of Earth to Proxima Centauri. And sure, even going half the speed of light makes for an 80-year one-way trip. But can you really put a price on the future of humanity?

• The Inverse analysis: Don’t like one planet? Hop to another. Heck, if they’re all habitable, choose your own adventure. If none are … good luck.

BUT … what if red dwarfs don’t have the right stuff?

Aside from pillaging the PHL list of worlds, you eliminate the potential for robust life in the universe. You have to stick to stars like the Sun. And suddenly, we don’t have a lot of places nearby to go. Two of the remaining planets around non-M-dwarf stars on the PHL index aren’t an easy shot. Kepler-442 b is nearly 1200 light-years away. Kepler-62f is 980+ light-years away. We can’t get there.

1. TAU CETI F

Tau Ceti f is a hefty world. We haven’t seen it directly, but it’s at a minimum four times the mass of Earth. Gravity there would be high — not a lot of fun for those who like calisthenics. It’s also likely 1.8 times the radius of Earth (though we haven’t seen it pass in front of its star, so that’s a rough estimate). It has a 642-day orbit — one of the longest period known habitable exoplanets.

But it has a lot of things in its favor. Tau Ceti is a Sun-like star, about 78 percent the mass of the Sun, and burns at similar temperatures. (Both are classified as G-stars.) At 12 light-years away, we could get there in 24 years going half the speed of light — just in time for babies leaving Earth to have a quarter-life crisis on arrival.

Its Sun-like qualities have made it a popular destination for science fiction, including Dan Simmon’s Hyperion and Arthur C. Clarke’s Rama series. The star system also makes an appearance in Star Trek, Barbarella, Doctor Who, The Expanse, and … uh … Earth: Final Conflict. It’s the nerd connoisseur's Sun-like star, to all you Alpha Centauri-loving plebes.

It’s not exactly high on the list of the 24 most habitable planets on the list. In fact, it’s 22 on a list of 24. It’s not graduating with honors. It’s only listed as having a .58 Earth Similarity Index (.99 is the highest possible, and Proxima Centauri b has .87 and TRAPPIST-1d .90, sitting at #4 and #6, respectively.)

So maybe Tau Ceti f isn’t quite what we want there, either — especially with the gravity and potential to be more of a small Neptune than a large Earth. There could be moons. We might find an elusive candidate, Tau Ceti PxP-4, that (if it exists) is in the habitable zone too. In other words, it’s still worth the trip — especially if the red dwarf stars are out.

• The Inverse analysis: Earth-like temperatures could make this a great place to go, and if the planet isn’t so great, maybe it has an ok moon … or even another planet waiting for us.
• Habitability rating: 🤔🤔🤔

BONUS: CALLISTO

Okay, okay. We know. Not a planet — it’s Jupiter's outermost large moon. But hear us out.

Let’s say astronomers realize Proxima Centauri b isn’t habitable. Fine. There are other potentially habitable planets within the same distance as Tau Ceti, including Teegarden’s Star b (the most potentially habitable planet by PHL standards), Ross 128b, and Luyten’s Star, which we’ve already beamed a message to. We could just go there, but being that they’re all M-dwarf planets, the journey seems iffier.

But let’s say Proxima Centauri b is very habitable. So habitable, in fact, that it’s rife with intelligent life. We aren’t going to be welcomed with open arms. We would, after all, be invaders — the kinds of aliens sci-fi has taught us to fear. (If you want to know how first contact can go very wrong, get out of hand if you will, read The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell.) Then we can’t go there either.

And if Mars and Venus are non-starters, there are still places we can go. They’re just not planets. They’re the water worlds of our Solar System, places like Ceres in the asteroid belt, Europa and Ganymede circling Jupiter, and Enceladus spewing oceanic water out into space. Even Titan looks like a cold version of early Earth — lakes of ethane and methane dotting the surface while an entire ocean of water is trapped deep below. Pluto might have a subsurface ocean.

But we might not want to go down this path. Jupiter, for example, has some of the most deadly radiation in our solar system. When the Pioneer 10 probe passed it in 1974, NASA hadn’t correctly predicted just how much radiation it would emit. Even passing what they thought was a “safe” point, the probe was damaged by the radiation.

And while Europa and Ganymede are watery ocean worlds underneath an icy crust, they’re within those radiation belts. The ice may protect life below but would endanger or flat-out fry humans above.

There has to be a better way.

And maybe there is. In 2003, NASA Langley researchers suggested a solution to the Ganymede / Europa problem. Just go a world over, to Callisto.

Why is Callisto so promising?:

• It’s outside the most dangerous parts of the radiation belts
• It’s the size of the planet Mercury (Ganymede is slightly larger, Callisto slightly smaller)
• Its heavy cratering gives places to land

It’s also made of water ice. This water could be used for drinking after some processing, sure, but it could also be refined into hydroxyzine for rocket fuel.

What’s so tantalizing about Callisto (in the more immediate) is the chance it could be home base while we send robots off to Europa to explore. We could set up shop on the relatively safe far side of the moon and wait for the data to come back.

Maybe it’s our new home, maybe it’s our new research station. Ultimately, the worlds beyond Earth seem pretty inhospitable. While humans are tough, you’re asking all of humanity to participate in the Shackleton Expedition.

OR MAYBE WE SHOULD JUST STAY HOME and stay put, fixing our problems on Earth instead of running away to another planet. (But if we don’t, dibs on a condo on Tau Ceti f.)

Four-Legged Dark Creature Was Spotted On Mars by NASA’s Rover

As the title suggests, this photo was taken by the Mars Opportunity Rover, and right off the bat you can see why it got so much attention to say the least.

This four-legged animal turned up out of nowhere and as it brushed past the camera experts couldn’t help but compare it to a bear from our planet.

Of course, we know that this is virtually impossible, but it is interesting to see if such similarities did occur between life on Mars and life on Earth.

We know that for the most part, the aliens that lived on Mars were humanoid so why wouldn’t creatures similar to bears actually live on Mars too?

The photograph itself is quite good too, unlike most others out there you can clearly see its outline and the fact that it isn’t just a random camera glitch too. Of course, there were some skeptics that called this just another typical case of the pareidolia effect but that’s inconsequential, to say the least as we could give these people an actual alien being and they’d still find reasons to complain at the end of the day.

A lot of experts have stated that this could actually be one of the last remnants of the Red Planet although that’s very unlikely considering just how many encounters we found so far to this day on Mars.

So, which is it? Is it our imagination or is there more to this picture than meets the eye?

When it comes to black holes, does size really matter? Would you be afraid if astronomers discovered one of the tiniest black holes ever? Would you change your mind if they told you it was also the closest black hole to the Earth ever found? How close? Ah, all of sudden, size DOES matter!

Tharindu Jayasinghe is a doctoral student in astronomy at The Ohio State University and part of a team of researchers looking for tiny black holes – a new class of black holes discovered in 2019 at The Ohio State University. They were scanning data on a red giant star in the constellation Monoceros – so named because it resembles the mythical steed – when they noticed something was causing the light from the red giant to periodically change in intensity and appearance. The changes were so drastic that they signaled the orbiting object was massive enough to change its shape – a phenomenon called tidal distortion – but not large enough to block it completely from view. Knowing what they know at OSU about tiny black holes, they suspected (and hoped) that’s what was circling the red giant.

“When we looked at the data, this black hole – the Unicorn – just popped out.”

The data showed a black hole a mere three times the mass of our Sun that was distorting its companion into a football shape – how appropriate for Ohio State! Even better, it’s only 1,500 light years from Earth – giving the researchers a double-black-hole-score for the closest and nearly the tiniest ever found. They nicknamed it the Unicorn because of its uniqueness and location in the constellation Monoceros (Latin for unicorn) and their study was accepted for publication in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

“What we’ve done here is come up with a new way to search for black holes, but we’ve also potentially identified one of the first of a new class of low-mass black holes that astronomers hadn’t previously known about. The masses of things tell us about their formation and evolution, and they tell us about their nature.”

As Todd Thompson, a professor of astronomy at The Ohio State University, study co-author and lead author of the 2019 study announcing the discovery of tiny black holes, pointed out in 2019, The Ohio State University has become a leader in finding them with the KELT (Kilodegree Extremely Little Telescope) system — developed by an OSU graduate student – and the ASAS-SN (All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae), which is run out of Ohio State. They’ve done so well in finding them, they’re now becoming the leader in mapping them.

“I think the field is pushing toward this, to really map out how many low-mass, how many intermediate-mass and how many high-mass black holes there are, because every time you find one it gives you a clue about which stars collapse, which explode and which are in between.”

There’s no doubt that radar has played a large role in the study of the UFO phenomenon. For decades, strange and mysterious craft have been recorded on radar-screens by personnel at numerous military facilities. But, we get further, though, here’s a bit of background on radar: As the people at ExplainThatStuff! state: “An airplane’s radar is a bit like a torch that uses radio waves instead of light. The plane transmits an intermittent radar beam (so it sends a signal only part of the time) and, for the rest of the time, “listens” out for any reflections of that beam from nearby objects. If reflections are detected, the plane knows something is nearby—and it can use the time taken for the reflections to arrive to figure out how far away it is. In other words, radar is a bit like the echolocation system that “blind” bats use to see and fly in the dark.” With that said, now let’s take a look at some fascinating cases. In September 1952, NATO held a large-scale military exercise in the North Sea and English Channel. Its name: Operation Mainbrace.

During the week-long exercise numerous UFO sightings were made by military personnel. One of those was William Maguire, whose encounter occurred on September 17. At the time, he was stationed at RAF Sandwich, Kent, England. Maguire speaks of his memories of how staff at the base tracked on radar the movements of a gigantic UFO hovering over the sea: “My memory was that everything was in a complete flap. Normally, in a military situation everything is ordered, regular and set out. But here was a situation that was plainly out of control. Mechanics were flying about all over the place. The mechanics were being blamed for not calibrating the instruments properly; we were being blamed for not interpreting the readings correctly. Every single instrument on the base was showing this enormous object sitting up at an unbelievable height. It was the size of a warship and it just stood there.”

Moving on: According to the late UFO researcher James McDonald: “An Air Force RB-47, equipped with ECM (Electronic Countermeasures) gear, manned by six officers, was followed over a total distance in excess of 600 miles and for a time period of more than an hour, as it flew from near Gulfport, Miss., through Louisiana and Texas, and into southern Oklahoma. The unidentified object was, at various times, seen visually by the cockpit crew (as an intense white or red light), followed by ground-radar, and detected on ECM monitoring gear aboard the RB-47. Simultaneous appearances and disappearances on all three of those physically distinct ‘channels’ mark this UFO case as especially intriguing from a scientific viewpoint.”

An FBI document of September 21, 1951, and captioned “Flying Saucers,” reads as follows: “On September 20, Andrew J. Reid G-2 [Army Intelligence] Ft. Monmouth, NJ, provided following report of unconventional aircraft observed by radar at above Army installation. On Sept 10, fiftyone [sic], an AN/MPG-1 radar set picked up a fast moving low flying target, exact altitude undetermined at approximately 11:10 a.m., southeast of Ft. Monmouth at a range of about twelve thousand yards. The target appeared to approximately follow the coast line, changing its range only slightly but changing its azimuth rapidly. The radar set was set to full aided azimuth tracking which normally is fast enough to track jet aircraft, but in this case was too slow to be resorted to. Target was lost in the N.E. at a range of about fourteen thousand yards.” The story gets even more controversial, as the next part of the report makes very clear: “This target also presented an unusually strong return for aircraft[,] being comparable in strength to that usually received from a coastal ship [italics mine].”

An FBI teletype of October 13, 1950 refers to the radar detection of a definitive squadron of unknown objects tracked over the Oak Ridge installation at 11:25 p.m. on October 12. The documentation states: “USAF radar installation at Knoxville…picked up indications of eleven objects and perhaps more traveling across controlled area of Atomic Energy installation at Oak Ridge.” The report continued: “Altitude of objects varied from one thousand to five thousand feet…and density from reading made by light aircraft equal in size to C-47, speed from one hundred to one hundred twenty-five miles per hour…” Then we have the following from the same document: “No reasonable explanation for radar readings yet developed although operators are experienced reliable personnel and radar set is in perfect operating condition. Bureau will advise of further developments.” Four days later, the FBI received the details of yet another alarming incident, this time involving the visual sighting of a UFO over Oak Ridge.

The so-called “Kinross Case”” focuses upon the strange – and still-unresolved – disappearance of a US Air Force F-89C jet fighter that was scrambled late on the night of November 23, 1953, on an “active air defense mission” to intercept an “unknown aircraft” over Lake Superior. Kinross Air Force Base, which was closest to the scene where the “unknown”” was initially tracked, quickly alerted the 433^rd Fighter Interception Squadron at Truax Field, Madison, Wisconsin, and the F-89C gave immediate chase. Available USAF records demonstrate that the F-89 was vectored west-northwest, then west, climbing to 30,000 feet. While on its westerly course, the crew received permission to descend to 7,000 feet, turning east-northeast and coming steeply down on the target from above. Alarmingly, as the aircraft closed-in on the “unknown” it subsequently vanished into oblivion, along with its two crew-members. The last radar contact placed the interceptor at 8,000 feet, 70 miles from Keeweenaw Point, and about 150 miles northwest of Kinross AFB, which, today, is called Kincheloe AFB.

An extract from the official USAF Aircraft Accident Report outlines further details of the official story: “Aircraft took off at 2322 Zebra 23 Nov 53 on an active Air Defense Mission to intercept an unknown aircraft approximately 160 miles Northwest of Kinross Air Force Base. The aircraft was under radar control throughout the interception. At approximately 2352 Zebra the last radio contact was made by the radar station controlling the interception. At approximately 2355 Zebra the unknown aircraft and the F-89 merged together on the radar scope. Shortly thereafter the IFF signal disappeared from the radar scope. No further contact was established with the F-89. An extensive aerial search has revealed no trace of the aircraft. The aircraft and its crew are still missing.” For both ufologists and the Air Force the matter of the Kinross affair remains wide open.

Musk has already said he hopes to get humans on Mars by 2026 – seven years before NASA aims to land astronauts on the Red Planet.

But a barefoot Musk warned Thursday: 'Going to Mars reads like that advert for Shackleton going to the Antarctic. You know it is dangerous, it's uncomfortable and it's a long journey.

'You might not come back alive but it is a glorious adventure and it will be an amazing experience.

SpaceX brought spaceflight back to America in May last year by launching NASA astronauts from Kennedy Space Center in Florida to the to the International Space Station (ISS) – an event that has not happened in nearly a decade. 

Dubbed 'Launch America,' it was also the first time a private company has put astronauts into space.  

In February Musk told the Good Times Show his goal was to establish a self-sustaining Martian civilization. 

SpaceX brought spaceflight back to America in May last year by launching NASA astronauts from Kennedy Space Center in Florida to the to the International Space Station (ISS) – an event that has not happened in nearly a decade. Astronauts are pictured Friday 

NASA plans to put the first humans on Mars by 2033 as part of its Artemis program that will see the next man and first woman land on the Moon in 2024. 

Although Musk hopes to achieve his goal of landing humans on the Red Planet by 2026, he was realistic and said it isn't a hard deadline due to the technical hurdles. 

Musk says there are a number of technological advances that need to be made between now and 2026 before humans can travel to Mars on Starship. 

These include ensuring Starship is fully reusable and that it can reach orbit where it is able to refuel ready for the long six month trip to Mars.

'For the first time in the four and a half billion year history of Earth it has been possible to extend life beyond Earth and make life multi-planetary,' he said.

'Humanity is the agent of life and we have an obligation to ensure the creatures of Earth continue even if there is a calamity on Earth, whether it is man-made or a natural calamity - if you look at the fossil record there are many mass extinctions. 

'It is about ensuring we pass that threshold where it is self-sustaining if some calamity prevents the ships from going there.

'What comes first - a self-sustaining city on Mars or World War Three?'

He said it would be a tiny, dangerous outpost to start with requiring a lot of hard work, a 'frontier environment' with far more ways to die than there are on Earth.

'It will be fun and a great adventure, but it will not be a luxurious thing to start'.

He said the propellant plant, solar power, food production, iron ore refinery are all 'fundamentals of industry' required to make Mars self-sustaining.

Although this was SpaceX´s third crew flight for NASA, it was the first to use a vehicle that´s flown before, an essential part of a plan by SpaceX founder and chief executive Elon Musk to push to the moon and Mars. 

The Dragon capsule was used for SpaceX´s first crew launch last May, while the Falcon rocket soaring Friday hoisted crew two in November.

It was the first time two SpaceX crew Dragons were parked there at the same time - practically side by side. 

And earlier this month NASA picked Musk's SpaceX to build the spacecraft that take the first woman and next man to the moon. The Musk-owned firm beat out Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin and Dynetics.

The officials statement from NASA confirms SpaceX will be the only one to take humans back to the moon for the first time since the Apollo mission 48 years ago.

A new Technique Could use Quasars to Directly Measure the Expansion Rate of the Universe

One of the biggest challenges to measuring the expansion of the universe is the fact that many of the methods we use are model-dependent. The most famous example is the use of distant supernovae, where we compare the standard brightness of a Type Ia supernova with their apparent brightness to find their distance. But knowing the standard brightness depends upon comparing them to the brightness of Cepheid variables which is in turn determined by measuring the distances of nearby stars via parallax. Every step of this cosmic distance ladder depends upon the step before it.

This doesn’t mean our distance measurements are necessarily wrong, but it makes them more vulnerable to systematic errors. In recent years it has become clear that our various measures of cosmic expansion don’t quite agree, so either a systematic error has crept into our data, or something is wrong with our cosmological model. One way out of this mess would be to find new ways of measuring cosmic expansion. Preferably methods that aren’t model dependent. We’ve made quite a bit of progress in this area. Methods using phenomena such as astronomical masers and gravitational waves have shown a lot of promise. And a recent study in Physical Review A introduces a method using quasars and gravitational lensing.

Quasars are incredibly bright and distant objects. They are powered by active supermassive black holes in young galaxies. The light we see from quasars has traveled for billions of years to reach us, and so it is redshifted by the expansion of the universe during that time. Rather than trying to measure the distance of these quasars, this new method looks at quasars that are gravitationally lensed by closer galaxies.

When a galaxy is between us and a distant quasar, the gravitational mass of the galaxy bends quasar light around the galaxy. As a result, we can often see multiple images of the quasar rather than a single image. Each of these images is the result of a different path of light as it is lensed by the galaxy. Because of gravitational lensing, the light paths of these images can differ in distance by dozens of light-years. So the quasar images we see can differ in age by decades. Since the universe is always expanding, a younger quasar image will be redshifted less than an older one.

The idea behind this new work is wonderfully simple. Just compare the redshifts of the lensed quasar images near a galaxy, and you can determine how much the universe expanded over a decade or century. Do this with galaxies at various distances, and you can determine not only the rate of cosmic expansion but whether that rate has changed over time.

In practice, comparing these redshifts is very difficult. The redshift difference between two quasar images is extremely small, and since the light has traveled so far its spectral lines are blurred by the gas it has passed through to reach us. It’s an effect known as Doppler broadening. So we can’t compare the redshifts directly.

To overcome this problem, the team proposes a method called intensity correlation speckles. The method takes the Doppler broadened light of a quasar image and compresses it into an average line. Since two lensed images will have a similar Doppler broadening when compressed their main difference will be their difference in redshift. The two images can then be compared by the way they interfere or speckle. It’s an optical effect similar to the way two slightly different musical notes can interfere to create a warbling tone.

In principle, this method could give us a detailed measure of the evolution of cosmic expansion, and might settle the tension of modern cosmology. The next step is to create a detector for ground-based telescopes that could make such a measurement.

Navy Flight Encounters A Hugh Alien Craft In 1956 Over The Atlantic

1956 ………FLIGHT OVER THE ATLANTIC

It had happened in 1956. Cruising at 19,000 feet, a Navy R7V-2 transport – a four-engine Super-Constellation – was flying west across the Atlantic Ocean. The next stop was Gander, Newfoundland. Final destination, Naval Air Station, Patuxent, Maryland.

The night was clear, visibility unlimited. In the senior pilot’s seat, Commander George Benton was checking the dim-lit instruments. At thirty-four, Benton had a decade of Navy flying behind him. He had made the Atlantic crossing more than two hundred times. Back in the cabin were two extra Navy air crews, en route home from foreign duty.

Most of these men were asleep. Including Benton’s regular and relief crews, there were nearly 30 airmen-pilots, navigators and flight engineers aboard the Constellation. As Commander Benton finished his cockpit check, he glanced out at the stars. Then he leaned forward, puzzled. A few minutes before, the sea below had been dark. Now there was a cluster of lights, like a village, about twenty-five miles ahead.

Benton looked over at his co-pilot, Lieutenant Peter W. Mooney. “What do you make of those lights?” Mooney peered down, startled. “Looks like a small town!” “That’s what I thought.” Benton quickly called the navigator, Lieutenant Alfred C. Erdman. “We must be way off course. There’s land down there.” “It can’t be land.” Erdman hurried forward from his map table. “That last star sight shows…” He broke off, staring down at the clustered lights. “Well?” said Benton. “They must be ships,” said Erdman. “Maybe a rendezvous for some special operation.”

“They don’t look like ships,” said Benton. He called Radioman John Wiggins. No word of any unusual ship movements, Wiggins reported. And no signals from the location of the lights. If they were ships, they were keeping radio silence. “Wake up those other crews,” Benton told Erdman. “Maybe somebody can dope it out.” In a few moments, two or three airmen crowded into the cockpit. Benton cut off the automatic pilot, banked to give them and the men in the cabin a better view.

As the transport began to circle, the strange lights abruptly dimmed. Then several colored rings appeared, began to spread out. One, Benton noticed, seemed to be growing in size. Behind him, someone gave an exclamation. Benton took another look. That luminous ring wasn’t on the surface – it was something rushing up toward the transport. “What the devil is it?” said Mooney. “Don’t know,” muttered Benton. He rolled the Constellation out of its turn to start a full-power climb. Then he saw it was useless. The luminous ring could catch them in seconds.

The glow, he now saw, came from the rim of some large, round object. It reached their altitude, swiftly took shape as a giant disc-shaped machine. Dwarfing the Constellation, it raced in toward them. “It’s going to hit us!” said Erdman. Benton had known normal fear, but this was nightmare. Numbed, he waited for the crash. Suddenly the giant disc tilted. Its speed sharply reduced, it angled on past the port wing. The commander let out his breath. He looked at Mooney’s white face, saw the others’ stunned expressions.

Watching out the port window, he cautiously started to bank. He stopped as he saw the disc. It had swung around, was drawing abreast, pacing them at about one hundred yards. For a moment he had a clear glimpse of the monster. Its sheer bulk was amazing; its diameter was three to four times the Constellation’s wing span. At least thirty feet thick at the center, it was like a gigantic dish inverted on top of another.

Seen at this distance, the glow along the rim was blurred and uneven. Whether it was an electrical effect, a series of jet exhausts or lights from opening in the rim, Benton could not tell. But the glow was bright enough to show the disc’s curving surface, giving a hint of dully reflecting metal. Though Benton saw no signs of life, he had a feeling they were being observed. Fighting an impulse to dive away, he held to a straight course. Gradually, the strange machine pulled ahead.

Tilting its massive shape upward, it quickly accelerated and was lost against the stars. Commander Benton reached for his microphone, called Gander Airport and identified himself. “You show any other traffic out here?” he asked the tower. “We had something on the scope near you,” Gander told him. “But we couldn’t get an answer.”

“We saw it,” Benton said grimly. “It was no aircraft.” He gave the tower a concise report, and back at Gander teletype messages were rushed to the U.S. Air Defense Command, the Commanding Officer, Eastern Sea Frontier, the Director of Air Force Intelligence and the Air Technical Intelligence Center.

When the Constellation landed at Gander, Air Force intelligence officers met the transport. From the start, it was plain they accepted the giant disc sighting as fact. For two hours, Benton and the rest were carefully interrogated[debriefed], separately and together: How close did the object come? What was its size… estimated rate of climb… any electrical interference noted… what happened to the other luminous rings?

From the answers to scores of questions, the majority opinion emerged. The flying disc was between 350 and 400 feet in diameter, and apparently metallic. No interference with ignition noted; instruments not observed and radio not operating during this brief period. Time for the giant disc to climb to the transport’s altitude, between five and eight seconds, indicated speed between 1,400 and 2,200 knots; the disc had accelerated above this speed on departure.

Not all the men in the cabin had seen the luminous rings. Of those who had, most were watching the huge disc approach and did not see the “rings” disappear. If they, too, were flying discs, in a rendezvous as some suggested, they apparently had raced off while the other one was checking on the Constellation. At one point, an Intelligence captain asked Benton if he had seen any indication of life abroad the disc.

“No, but it was intelligently controlled, that’s certain. Benton looked at him closely. “That size, it would hardly be remote-controlled, would it?” “I couldn’t say,” replied the Air Force man. Nor would he tell what the Gander Airport radar had shown about the disc’s speed and maneuvers. “What’s behind all this?” demanded Mooney. “Up to now, I believed the Air Force. You people say there aren’t any flying saucer…”

“Sorry, I can’t answer any questions,” said the captain. “Why not? After a scare like that, we’ve got a right to know what’s going on.” The Intelligence officer shook his head. “I can’t answer any questions,” he repeated. As quickly as possible, intelligence reports with full details were flashed to the four Defense commanders already notified, with an extra message for the Director of Naval Intelligence.

After the Constellation reached Patuxent, the air crews were interviewed [debriefed] again, by Navy order. Each man made a written report, with his opinion of what he had seen. Five days later, Commander Benton had a phone call from a scientist in a high government agency. “I’m informed you had a close-up UFO sighting. I’d like to see you.”

Benton checked, found the man was cleared by the Navy. Next day, the scientist appeared, showed his credential, listened intently to Benton’s report. Then he unlocked a dispatch case and took out some photographs. “Was it like any of these?” At the third picture, Benton stopped him. “That’s it!” He looked sharply at the scientist. “Somebody must know the answers, if you’ve got photographs of the things.”

The other man took the pictures. “I’m sorry, Commander.” He closed his dispatch case and left. At the time when I (Donald Keyhoe) learned of this case, I had served for two years as Director of the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena.

Martin is fascinated by the meta-paranormal surround of the phenomenon.

Nick Redfern’s interest is saturated by anything outside normalcy, UFOs only a part of that.

Kevin Randle prefers to augment UFO reports with only credible, reputable reportage.

Bryan Daum is just happy that UFOs of all kinds are rampant.

We all know what José C believes.

Anthony Bragalia is obsessed with Roswell, and only UFOs connected to that mischievous incident.

A few returnees or long-time lurkers, here, are open to anything that is out of the ordinary, including my pontifications, no matter how loony.

Me? I’m polluted by the psychological element of UFO witnesses and the oddity of UFO encounter reports. (All the rest is backwash.)

[And no one here seems particularly interested in the “abduction” stories.]

That’s part of the UFO (UAP?) problem: only José is immersed in his preference, the rest of us mucking around with no real or aggressive pursuit of our interest.

We’re flailing around for any whiff of UFO authenticity, any!

(Some UFO enthusiasts I see on Facebook appear to be immersed in “research” of an iffy kind or just playing footsie with other UFO enthusiasts only for the camaraderie, nothing more than social propinquity.)

Let’s all try to buckle down and present worthwhile input, here and elsewhere, without the mangle of flotsam we, including me, keep putting forth as viable UFO information or conjecture.

Contact with Aliens Will Happen by the end of Century

A scientist believes that humanity will make contact with extraterrestrials by the end of the Century. Dr Michio Kaku of the US Tv series “Ancient Aliens” has stated that following the recent leak of US military UFO footage, it’s likely that extraterrestrials do exist.

The 74-year-old physicist said the footage is either the proof of secret government weaponry or evidence of life beyond Earth.

He said that alien visitation was attributed to crackpots, hucksters, and people who saw something not real because they were in a drunken haze but could no longer be ruled out today.

As a physicist, he believes in testable, reproducible, and falsifiable things. Extraterrestrial visitations in the past could not be tested, and it was just an eye-witness account. Now we have videos from the US military, and physicists have analysed these graphs frame by frame, Kaku said. We now realize that no known military or commercial vehicle can reproduce the gyrations and the velocity of UFOs. Either they’re secret military weapons, or they’re from outer space, Dr Kaku explained.

Dr Kaku also pointed out that with the rapid advancements of our technology in recognizing signs of life, it’s only a matter of time before we come into contact with an alien civilisation.

He explained: “I think that there’s a good likelihood that, in this Century, we’ll make contact with an alien civilisation. And how do we know this? Because we’re getting better at scanning planets in outer space for radio signals.”

Dr Kaku expects advanced alien civilisations could reach Earth from outer space as they’re probably thousands of years ahead of humankind in technology, in which case we are like squirrels to them.

“What do we have to offer? Gold? No, gold is a rather useless metal for an extraterrestrial. We really have nothing to offer them, and if anything, they’ve been observing us for many years, and if they wanted to make contact, they would have done so decades ago.”

Dr Kaku called those people who beamed up by an extraterrestrial craft to steal something next time as there’s no law against stea

ling from an alien civilisation, and you’ll have bragging rights that can be tested in the laboratory.

Saturn’s rings are one of the most recognized and revered celestial objects known to the human race. From a distance, they look like a disk of layered crystal or multicolored disks within disks that wrap around Saturn’s hazy umber face. When viewed up close, we see that these rings are actually particles of water ice (from microns to icebergs), as well as silicates, carbon dioxide, and ammonia.

We would also noticed that the rings have some interesting orbital mechanics. In fact, each ring has a different orbit that is the result of its proximity to Saturn (i.e., the closer they are, the faster they orbit). To illustrate what this complex system look like, NASA Fellow Dr. James O’Donoghue created a stunning animation that shows how each of Saturn’s major ring segments (A-Ring to F-Ring) orbit together around the planet.

Born in the UK, Dr. O’Donoghue is a planetary researcher and scientist currently working with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) who lives outside of Tokyo. While searching for anomalies in Antarctica, using Google Earth, I found several unnatural looking structures, including some that resemble possible remnants of ancient settlements.

Metallic gold rotating object filmed over Christchurch, New Zealand 22-Apr-2021

This unknown object was filmed over Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand, on 22nd April 2021.

Witness report: 

Object came from the east drifting toward the west. Appeared to have two parts that were rotating kind of like bike pedals. There was no sound that I could hear but it reflected the sunlight as it was a very sunny morning. Eventually it just disappeared from view. If I hadn’t been on my way to work I would’ve chased it for longer. People are saying it’s probably balloons but it didn’t look like balloons to me!

Atlantis and “the ships that made humans fly in ancient times”

For decades, researchers have raised their voices to accept the theory that flying ships existed in ancient times. Different ancient texts and stories would reveal the existence of airships from Atlantis.

The technological level of our ancestors has been discussed by archaeologists and historians. Some claim to have discovered that the technological principles of humanity come from Atlantis , thousands of years ago.

The evidence of flying machines of antiquity, we can find them in the different ancient cultures around the world.

The “Nazca balloons”

The ancient town of Nazca is one of the most important archaeological centers in the world. In its plains you can see in the Nazca lines , gigantic geoglyphs that present different figures.

Among them are huge hot air balloons , which have confused historians. Researcher Jim Woodman is convinced that the construction of these aircraft was possible with the tools that the natives of Nazca had.

Skeptical, Nott listened to Woodman’s theory and helped him build a hot air balloon out of materials that may have been used in ancient times . Against all odds, the balloon flew.

The Vimanas of India

Perhaps the greatest evidence of flying ships in ancient times comes from ancient Hindu culture . Specifically from the Veda .

The most recent research has yielded evidence of an advanced civilization , which existed before the end of the last Ice Age . This civilization inhabited part of the region that is now India and it is believed that it could have rivaled other equally advanced regions.

Ancient Sanskrit writings suggest that the stories, considered fantasy by experts for hundreds of years, could be true .

Support for this theory is based on the discovery of strange artifacts and additional texts that supplement the records kept in museums and universities.

In these stories you can read detailed descriptions, not only of flying ships , but of complex aeronautical processes and mechanical parts that exist today.

In fact, experts consider it an ancient guide to aerospace engineering .

The Vedas also mention an air war and an atomic war , which took place between a region in northern India and an unknown region, located in the Gobi desert.

It should be noted that there is a section of the Gobi desert , which has shown signs of radioactivity and several sections of the sand are melted, transforming into greenish glass .

The radioactive sands of Mongolia could be yet another proof of this war. In the same way, the remains found of an ancient city in northern India, showing signs of radioactivity .

It is thanks to these findings that the Aiud wedge , discovered in 1973 , was seen from another perspective; a machined piece of metal made from an aluminum alloy.

At first it was believed to be 400 years old . However, the new analyzes determined that it comes from the year 18,000 a. C. , almost 20,000 years before the discovery of aluminum.

Many experts have stated that this artifact could be part of an aircraft landing gear .

William Scott-Eliot and Remote Viewing

William Scott-Eliot was the first person to speak of Atlantean technology.

Atlantis has been one of the most controversial stories of humanity. Many ancient cultures make mention of a lost continent, however, it is thanks to the Greek philosopher Plato , that the legend became known.

He described it as an ancient city , still to his day, similar to a gigantic island that was located beyond the columns of Hercules .

More current researchers suggest that its location was off the coast of Spain , near the Bimini Islands in the Caribbean.

Although some experts believe that Atlantis is located at the South Pole , because this region is located “beyond the columns of Hercules”, as Plato mentioned.

There is no doubt that Atlantis is a mystery, however, nothing worries more than its ancient technology . Many historians assure that this continent had large submarine ships and an enigmatic crystal of power, which supplied electrical energy to the continent.

However, little has been said about the aircraft that traveled the skies, exploring the world .

The first text that touched on this theme was “The History of Atlantis and the lost Lemuria”, by William Scott-Elliot , published in 1909.

Scott-Eliot described a navigation aircraft technology based on a technology lost in ancient times.

Although many experts ignored the writer’s statements, since he was not based on any type of evidence, but on what he calls “Remote Viewing”.

Although historians did not take Remote Viewing into account , this ability was used by the CIA and the Pentagon on different occasions. In fact, these agencies took it into account years before, thanks to the work of experts, such as the genius in electronics, Michael Faraday.

The Aircraft of Atlantis

Using this process, Scott-Eliot was able to observe how society worked in Atlantis and Lemuria. Thus he discovered that both civilizations possessed flying ships . The writer described his experience as follows:

“The material from which the aerial ships were built was made of wood or metal. The previous ones were built of wood.

The platforms used are extremely thin, however the injection of a substance that did not add material to the weight, gave it toughness like leather, provided the necessary combination of lightness and resistance.

When the metal was used it was generally made of an alloy, two white metals and one red were included in its composition. The resultant was white in color, like aluminum and lighter in weight.

A large sheet of this metal was spread over the rough structure of the ship, which was then beaten into shape and electrically welded where necessary.

However, if it was constructed of metal or wood, its outer surface was perfectly smooth and seemingly without problems, and it glowed in the dark as if it were coated with luminous paint.

They were ship-like in shape, but invariably covered, because if she was going full speed it couldn’t have been convenient, even safe, for anyone on board staying on the upper deck. Its propeller and steering mechanism could be set in motion at either end. “

Although William Scott-Eliot did not rely on any evidence or ancient accounts for his research, there is some material that could be considered as evidence.

In the Library of Alexandria there are certain scrolls that survived the destruction, which speak of the lost history of mankind .

Other experts have argued that Atlantis existed at the same time as the “super state” of ancient India, known as the Rama Empire , some 15,000 to 20,000 years ago .

They may even have had commercial agreements through the Vimanas and the airships of Atlantis.

It is obvious that for skeptics, everything related to Atlantis, especially its airships, is nothing more than a myth. However, the evidence indicates that other cultures did possess flying machines which, possibly, were inherited from the lost continent.

On the eighth anniversary of its occurrence, a UFO captured on video over Puerto Rico by a U.S. Homeland Security plane is back in the news because it still hasn’t been resolved, and scientists who think a UAP that is seen traveling at 120 mph through both the air and the ocean before splitting in two should be investigated until it is identified and, if it’s not from Earth, the three-minute video is the “most compelling” evidence in existence of an alien spacecraft. In the wake of statements by Pentagon on other similar UFO videos recorded by military aircraft and the open policies on UFO data by other governments, this seems like a reasonable request.

“The SCU believes that all government data regarding unidentified aerospace objects should be made available to the public to be openly investigated by the broader scientific community, provided that such data does not compromise sources or methods of data collection. A full scientific investigation of such data would be able to uncover valuable information relating to both national security and advancement of our understanding of physics, aerospace engineering, and our world.”

In a letter, signed off by 55 concerned scientists, to Senators Marco Rubio and Mark Warner (read it here), the Scientific Coalition for Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (SCU) urged that the upcoming promised unclassified report on UFOs by the Director of the National Intelligence and the Department for Defense due for release in June contain more evidence on recent military encounters — evidence the SCU has been requesting without success. They hope it will include information on the 2013 UFO recorded on April 25, 2013. According to SCU spokesperson Jonathon Lace, the object was first seen over a runway at Rafael Hernandez airport in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. Shortly after that, Homeland Security (Customs and Border Protection (CBP)) pilots of a DHC-8 Turboprop spotted a red light over the ocean, were told by air traffic controllers they could not identify it, and too the three-minute video with an infrared camera. That video was later leaked to SCU, which conducted its own investigation.

“They (the pilots) wanted (the video) to be scientifically looked at, not UFO related, because again, the stigma that goes along with UFOs. So we pull the team together.”

“The object witnessed by CBP and tower personnel and recorded on the CBP DHC-8 aircraft’s thermal imaging system is of unknown origin. There is no explanation for an object capable of traveling under water at over 90 mph with minimal impact as it enters the water, through the air at 120 mph at low altitude through a residential area without navigational lights, and finally to be capable of splitting into two separate objects. No bird, no balloon, no aircraft and no known drones have that capability.”

Rich Hoffman, one of the co-founders of SCU and an experienced UFO investigator, told Mystery Wire the SCU investigation was thorough and refuted all of the alternatives proposed by skeptics. What looks like the ability to travel in both air and water – known as “trans-medium travel” is especially intriguing and sets this UFO video apart from the recently disclosed photos of UFOs seen by Navy ships off the coast of California in 2019 and the Tic Tacs seen by Nimitz pilots and personnel in 2004.

“This video is the best documentation of an unknown aerial and submerged nautical object exhibiting advanced technology that the authors of this report have ever seen.”

Why doesn’t the military or the government feel the same? According to Hoffman, the video kept getting passed between departments with none of them wanting to take ownership. Will the SCU Letter to Senators Rubio and Warner help? Both have expressed interest in UOFs/UAPs, but it remains to be seen if they’re able to stand up to whoever internally is applying the longstanding and extremely powerful pressure to conceal this data.

If only Mulder and Scully were available.

While UFO enthusiasts in the U.S. are applauding the few tidbits coming out from government authorities on sightings by military or commercial pilots, Canadian commercial pilots have been logging them for years in a public database that is searchable in a variety of ways and accessible to anyone with a computer, time and interest. That description fits Vice.com, which recently dug into the data and found many close encounters of the commercial aircraft kind that makes one wonder if Canada is just more open about UFO sightings or if the Great White North is hotspot for aliens looking for beer, polar bears and hockey games. Let’s take a look at a few of the most interesting recent ones.

CADORS (Civil Aviation Daily Occurrence Reporting System) is the Canadian national ATS (Airline Technical Support) safety data reporting system which collects information about operational occurrences within the Canadian National Civil Air Transportation System. Reporting by pilots is mandatory, but details of the occurrences are often brief and leave out details that come up in subsequent investigations.

Nonetheless, it’s an excellent starting point for incidents like the one on January 6, 2019, when the crew of the medical transporter Vanguard Air Care reported “an inexplicable bright light followed them… at the same altitude and speed” over northern Manitoba and “no aircraft were reported in their vicinity.” Civilian air traffic controllers alerted the 21 Aerospace Control and Warning Squadron Air Force unit at the CFB North Bay military base in northeastern Ontario. Their investigation was reported to the Government of Canada, the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), and NORAD (part of their responsibility area). That report shows the incident occurred in the Mystery Lake region (coincidence?) near Thompson, Manitoba, and the analysis was “another A/C” (aircraft). The end result is disappointing UFO-wise, but this shows that the Canadian government has a UFO investigation department that works with their military and that of the U.S. … a department that seems to be thorough and somewhat open to the public.

Another interesting encounter occurred on April 30, 2018, when a Kalitta Charters Boeing 747 cargo flight flying over the Northwest Territories reported “an object flying sporadically, estimated at (60 to 80 thousand feet) and moving at Mach 4” – a speed that exceeds the capability of the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird. Vice.com notes that the CADORS report wasn’t filed for a year-and-a-half and, while it doubted the crew’s judgement of the speed, could not identify the speedy object.

One that made the Canadian news happened on November 14, 2016, over Lake Ontario when a Porter Airlines Dash 8-400 turboprop dove to avoid hitting an unidentified object that “appeared to be solid… and shaped like an upright doughnut or inner tube.” Two flight attendants were injured so the incident was reported by the Toronto Star and other media outlets, forcing the Transportation Safety Board (TSB) to investigate. According to CADORS, it found the object was “approximately 5 to 8 feet in diameter” and implied that the pilot could have just flown past it but chose instead to override the autopilot and take a nosedive evasive action. Vice.com notes that TSB never did identify the object.

More incidents such as these can be found by searching the CADORS database. The amount of unusual events makes clear that there’s unexplained stuff going on in Canadian airspace where thousands of passengers fly (at least until the pandemic) every day – and that means the same thing is occurring in the U.S. UFO investigator Chris Rutkowski told Vice.com that everyone, not just UFO enthusiasts, should be concerned about this. Former Royal Canadian Air Force pilot John “Jock” Williams plainly states the frustration everyone outside of the military or the government has when looking into these events:

“Any aviator who goes through the trouble of reporting something like this deserves to have it investigated. I don’t see that happening in Canada.”

Nor the U.S. … yet. Kudos to Vice.com for bringing this and many other ‘mysterious lights’ to light.

Located on the New England Highway in northern New South Wales, Australia, about 250 miles north of Sydney, is the rural township of Guyra. It is perched high on a volcanic uplift of the Northern Tablelands, and in fact the town is one of the highest in Australia at 4,364 feet above sea level, and is known for being one of the coldest places to live in Australia, comparatively speaking. It is a quaint place full of natural beauty, but not a place where a whole lot typically happens, yet this would change in December of 1999, when a mysterious object fell from the sky to smash right into the local water dam. So would begin a mystery that would cause hysteria in this small town, and which has not ever been concretely explained.

On December 8, a local council employee was carrying out routine maintenance work at the Guyra Water Supply Dam when he noticed an unusual sight. There was a crater at least 6 feet across and area of reeds measuring 50 feet by 20 feet that had been flattened in a semi-circular pattern, as if something had plunged down from the sky to smash into the ground there right at the edge of the dam. When police were notified, it would turn out that locals had been calling in actual sightings of an object coming down, described as a “green light” that had caused a loud boom about 30 seconds after being sighted. However, rather oddly, space agencies and meteorological experts and authorities in Canberra had no record of a meteorite or space junk coming down in the area at that time. No one had a clue what it could have possibly been, but just to be safe, authorities quickly moved to shut down the water supply and carry out an investigation. It was quickly found that radiation levels in the vicinity were normal, but in the absence of any more information the water supply was cut while divers got to work to check out the bottom.

Guyra, New South Wales

As this was going on, the incident was hitting the news in a major way, featured prominently on all of the major television networks, radio stations and newspapers. Newspapers were covered with sensationalist headlines such as “There’s an alien in Guyra’s drink!”, “Guyra hit by mystery flying object,” “UFO splashdown – Divers search dam for mystery object,” “Does Guyra Have a UFO in its Dam?” and others like these. Such headlines stirred up much intense interest, with people flooding into the normally quiet town in droves and rumors going around that a UFO had crashed at the dam. It was a minor hysteria and the theories were flying, with some saying that it was a meteorite or space junk, while others said it was aliens, and this captured the attention of the Australian UFO Research Network, who contacted the RAAF base at Amberley Ipswich. One of the team’s researchers, Martin Studer, would say of this:

I spoke to office staff at Amberley RAAF and they told me they had heard it wasn’t a meteorite, that it was an object of some kind. It was funny they were having a laugh with me saying maybe it was a space ship, ha! I was told that people have been sent to measure radiation. I was asked to hold the line and they would transfer me to someone who could help me with my inquiry. I got transferred to the, RAAF base at William Town NSW. The police divers are in the lake looking for what may have landed. William’s Town RAAF are waiting for the Police to report back before moving. It was still not clear what had come down, it could have been space junk or meteorite or a plane.

In the meantime, police divers were searching the water, and they found a subterranean cavern or tunnel, which was suspected to have been caused by the object drilling deep into the ground, but at first the object itself could not be located. Over several days of searches, the water was found to not be contaminated, and there were some mysterious fragments found on the bottom, but whatever the mystery object was, it could not be retrieved because it was speculated to have buried itself about 13 feet down into the soft granite down in the earth. The official cause of the impact was now being seen as a meteorite, which was thought to have been about the size of a grapefruit, but there were no further efforts to retrieve it. The General Manager of the Guyra Shire Council, Geoff Brooks, dismissed any talk of trying to actually dig up the object, saying:

Bearing in mind its location in the dam, I think it’s unlikely that Council will commit any more resources to it. Certainly it’s difficult to get to and it causes a fair bit of disruption to the water supply. So I think it will actually remain one of life’s marvelous mysteries.

As far as officials were concerned, that was that. It was a meteorite, pure and simple, move along. However, this was not known for sure, and no object had been produced to prove that it had been a meteorite, so conspiracies were going around that officials were trying to cover up what had really gone down, with accusations that the object actually had been dug up and whisked off, and that it was no meteorite but rather a UFO. This was further fueled by the fact that the RAAF base contacted by the Australian UFO Research Network had quite clearly stated that it had not been a meteorite. Things got even more mysterious when two researchers from Phenomena Research Australia (PRA) by the names of John Auchettl and Ron Barnett went to investigate, who also speculated that it might have been a meteorite, but also found some odd details that did not fit into this theory. Auchettl would say:

We did find the site interesting. Normally, we would not travel to such sites, but the information sent to us from DoD warranted a look. So yes, the impact has some strange aspects to it that need to be looked at. For example, the angle of entry to the dam was very shallow less than 45 degrees. The surface has burn marks; this is very unusual for a meteorite impact. I had a good look at the reeds on the bank. They are down in a strange shape not quite like an explosion but have the characteristics of a compression wave. The mud splash is also interesting as it lets us know how much energy was in the impact but the sting in the tail, with this impact, is on the other side [bank], the object may have skipped on the water. There was no witness to the impact.

Indeed, one of the problems is that no one seems to have seen the actual impact, making it hard to tell just what came down to earth here. Also making things more difficult are the discrepancies in some of the reports from eyewitnesses. For instance, some witnesses mentioned a green glow or light before the object apparently came down, while others said it was blue, and some witnesses described a loud boom like an explosion, while others made no mention of a sound. It all makes for a compelling mystery, and while the official explanation is that this was nothing more than a crashed meteorite, there are plenty of people who think it could have been something far more mysterious. What came down at the Guyra Dam that day and what happened to it? We may never know for sure.

Many people with an interest in Ufology will recall how, beginning in November 2005, a controversial stash of UFO-themed papers surfaced. They collectively became known as “The Serpo Documents.” The source of the documentation, to this day, remains unknown. She, he or them  chose to use the very appropriate alias of “Anonymous.” For some saucer-sleuths, the papers are leaked, highly secret files. For others, the entire thing is nothing but a big joke that has spun wildly out of control. Others suggest disinformation to muddy the ufological waters. The Serpo papers cover a huge amount of ground, but the primary focus is on controversial claims of an “exchange program” between us and the representatives of an alien race, one which began in the 1960s. Anonymous said: “I am a retired employee of the U.S. Government. I won’t go into any great details about my past, but I was involved in a special program. As for Roswell, it occurred, but not like the story books tell. There were two crash sites: one southwest of Corona, New Mexico and the second site at Pelona Peak, south of Datil, New Mexico.”

There was more to come: “Sandia Army Base, Albuquerque, New Mexico was then notified. A recovery team from Sandia took custody of all evidence, including six bodies. The bodies were taken to Sandia Base, but later transferred to Los Alamos. The live entity established communications with us and provided us with a location of his home planet. The entity remained alive until 1952, when he died. But before his death, he provided us with a full explanation of the items found inside the two crafts. One item was a communication device. The entity was allowed to make contact with his planet. Somehow, I never knew this information, but a meeting date was set for April 1964 near Alamogordo, New Mexico. The Aliens landed and retrieved the bodies of their dead comrades. Information was exchanged. Communication was in English. The aliens had a translation device. In 1965, we had an exchange program with the aliens. We carefully selected 12 military personnel; ten men and two women. They were trained, vetted and carefully removed from the military system. The 12 were skilled in various specialties.”

And, finally, there is this from the man or woman with no known name: “Near the northern part of the Nevada Test Site, the aliens landed and the 12 Americans left. One entity was left on Earth. The original plan was for our 12 people to stay 10 years and then return to Earth. But something went wrong. The 12 remained until 1978, when they were returned to the same location in Nevada. Seven men and one woman returned. Two died on the alien’s home planet. Four others decided to remain, according to the returnees. Of the eight that returned, all have died. The last survivor died in 2002. The returnees were isolated from 1978 until 1984 at various military installations. The Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) was responsible for their security and safety. AFOSI also conducted debriefing sessions with the returnees.” Despite the outrageous and unlikely tale that the documents told, Serpo very quickly became a sensation within certain ufological quarters and provoked massive debate – in magazines and journals, on radio shows, and at online forums. There is, however, one issue that has, for the most part, been overlooked, ignored and forgotten. In early 2006, a source that used the named “Chapman,” and who maintained they had a background with the British Ministry of Defense, claimed to know all about the Serpo files and what they really represented.

Chapman explained: “Interesting reading. However, these are NOT real events that are being described here, although the document they come from IS REAL. I saw this information in 1969 or ’70 in Whitehall. Originally it was a CIA document authored by a lady named Alice Bradley Sheldon. Its main purpose, if you will pardon the phrase, was to ‘scare the crap out of the Soviets’ in response to them scaring the crap out of us.” Admittedly, it’s fair to say that “Chapman” was as much an unknown whistleblower as was “Anonymous.” But, what’s the most likely scenario in this strange story? That “Anonymous” told an incredible truth of alien contact? Or that this was all a Cold War-based plot designed to disrupt the Russians? I say the latter. Here’s why: Alice Bradley Sheldon was born in 1915 and, in the immediate aftermath of the horrific events that occurred at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in December 1941, chose to do whatever she could for her government. It wasn’t long before she was working in the heart of U.S. military intelligence. She ultimately rose to the rank of Major. In 1945, she married Huntington D. Sheldon.

The two decided to relocate to Washington D.C. and both accepted new and exciting careers in the CIA. Alice took part in espionage operations and worked on photo-analysis projects, such as studying imagery of Soviet military installations and then-new Russian aircraft. She remained with the CIA until 1955. As for Huntington, he rose to the position of the Director of the Office of Current Intelligence of the CIA. He held that same position until 1961. In 1967, Alice decided to turn her hand to an area that she had a great love for: that of science-fiction. She did so, however, under the alias of James Tiptree, Jr. In 1973, a collection of her short stories hit the stands. It was entitled Ten Thousand Light Years from Home. Then, in 1975, Warm World and Otherwise were published to high acclaim. More books appeared: 1981’s Out of the Everywhere and Other Extraordinary Visions and 1985’s Brightness Falls from the Air. Barely a handful of people knew, during her lifetime, that Alice and Tiptree were actually one and the very same.

The final years for Alice and her husband were sadly not good; not at all. Both were suffering from ill-health. Huntington finally became bed-ridden. The end was getting closer and closer. It finally arrived. On May 19, 1987, Alice shot and killed her sleeping husband, and then took her own life. Her secrets from that time spent in the employ of the CIA went with her. Unless there is a significant development in the matter of Alice Bradley Sheldon, the Serpo papers, and a plot designed to terrify the Russians, we may never get to see the full picture. But, I cannot think of a better, and more qualified, source than Sheldon –a sci-fi writer and a CIA employee – to have whipped up the saga of Serpo, as a means to freak out the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

Giant Planet is Found at an Extreme Distance From its Star

One of the best things about the sheer number of exoplanets that astronomers are currently finding is how some are just very different. Those differences can sometimes undermine standing theories, and prompt scientists to start considering new theories that account for the new information.  That is undoubtedly what will happen to accommodate a new massive planet found by a team led by Dutch scientists.  This planet is unique in one very special way – it is about 110 times farther away from its star than the Earth is from the sun.

The star and accompanying planet are located in the southern constellation Musca about 360 light years away from Earth.  Known as YSES 2b, the planet was found by the Young Suns Exoplanet Survey (YSES) which uses data from the Very Large Telescope to search for young stars.  The one YSES 2b is orbiting is only 14 million years old, but resembles what our own sun would have looked like at that age.

There is no planet like YSES 2b around our current sun though, and its existence has some interesting implications for models of the early solar system.  Three potential explanations were put forward as to how such a massive planet could form so far out from the star.

First would be that it simply grew out of the protoplanetary disc, which is the most common method of planetary formation.  However, models of those early stage discs suggest that not enough material would be available in the disc to form a planet six times the size of Jupiter that far away from the parent star.

Another possible explanation is that there was some gravitational instability in the planetary disc, causing material to collect at the planet’s distant location.  For that to be the cause, there would have to be lots of material out in that space in order to cause the instability.  Right now there doesn’t appear to be enough of it to do so.

The final explanation is that the planet formed much closer to the star, and then migrated out to its extreme distance over the last few million years.  A similar thing is posited to have happened with the gas giants in our own solar system known as the Grand Tack Hypothesis.  Scientists would expect some other force to cause that migration though.  Most usually that force would be caused by a second planet, but scientists don’t see one that could have caused the gravitational disturbance to send the planet out far enough to end up where it is now.

While all three processes have arguments against them, it is still possible that one or more did in fact create YSES 2b.  But a more interesting prospect is that there was some other process that created it, and which would be new to science.  More study is needed, including seeing if the planet is indeed moving or potentially increasing in mass, which could shed more light on the finding.  Until then astronomers, including the ones running the YSES survey, will continue to search out wonderfully bizarre exoplanets.

The huge area of Nevada that now houses Area 51 had decidedly humble origins. In the pre-World War II period, portions of the land were designated to the Department of the Interior. The reason was to create a large reservation and sanctuary for animals. Things all changed, however, not long after crazed Adolf Hitler began flexing his muscles in Europe – something which led to the start of the Second World War in September 1939. America would join the war in 1941, after the terrible, deadly attack on Pearl Harbor by Japanese forces on December 7. The U.S. Government recognized that it was now all but inevitable that the nation would eventually have to enter the war, chiefly because Hitler’s forces were overrunning significant portions of Europe at an alarming pace. And, it was suggested in some quarters, the United States just might be next on Hitler’s list. Only the U.K. – as an island – managed to avoid being invaded, although it suffered massively from nightly bombing missions by German pilots. Pearl Harbor, though, was the key event which quickly set the wheels in motion for the U.S. to enter the Second World War. But, it’s important to note that the fear of potential war had already led the government to take certain, secret steps to ensure that if the worst scenario really did occur – which, as history has shown, it did – America would be ready to strike back in a decisive fashion.

As a result of the above developments in the war, various new facilities of the military were constructed all across the country. One of those very same new facilities was the Tonopah Bombing Range, based in Nevada. Today, there is a great deal of controversy concerning how much land previously in the public domain has now been handed over to Area 51, all in the name of national security. People have been forced to leave their homes. Land that one could once walk and drive through is now government land – and don’t even think about straying onto it. There is a very good reason for mentioning this: as history has shown, there is absolutely nothing new about any of this. In fact, on October 29, 1940, the U.S. Government quietly grabbed a significant amount of Nevada land to allow for the construction of the aforementioned Tonopah Bombing Range. In the immediate years ahead, there were name changes, new designations, and additional facilities: the Tonopah General Range, the Tonopah Gunnery and Bombing Range, and the Las Vegas General Range. In quick-time fashion, the desert land of Nevada was morphing at a startling rate – and it was morphing into what would ultimately become home to one of the most mysterious, notorious and important installations in the world. You know the one.

As the Second World War progressed, and as it became bleakly clear that defeating Adolf Hitler and his Nazi cronies was not going to be achieved overnight, further development of military facilities in Nevada were created. They included the Fourth Air Force Bombing and Gunnery Range, the Tonopah Army Air Field, and the Indian Springs Auxiliary Army Airfield. When the Nazis were finally, and thankfully, defeated in 1945, matters took a turn out in the desert. While some of the facilities that had played significant roles in the Second World War were shut down, or at least trimmed in terms of their work, a new lease of life and a change in direction was ultimately to begin. In the immediate post-war era, both Tonopah Air Force Base, and what was called the Las Vegas Air Force Base, both took on new roles. It was very much thanks to the work of the Atomic Energy Commission, which pushed for the area to become a central hub for the training of personnel in the fields of bombing, gunnery activity and more. The U.S. Government nodded approvingly at the plans of the AEC and, as a direct result of the AEC’s recommendations and forward thinking, it was on December 18, 1950 that the old Nellis Air Force Gunnery and Bombing Range was transformed into the Nevada Proving Grounds. Close to 700-square miles of local land was given to the NPG, to allow for work to go ahead at full-speed, and to ensure that the public had no access to the facility. Thus began the careful and slow confiscation of countless square-miles of the American landscape.

In terms of important events in the history of the development of Area 51, the next time period of note was 1955: that was when Area 51 really began to come to fruition. But, before we get to that, let’s continue with our study of the work of the overall Nevada Test and Training Range. It was also in 1955 – specifically in July of that year – that the legendary U-2 spy-plane flew at the NT&TR’s huge runway at Groom Lake, thus cementing the range’s undeniable role in aviation history. Further land was soon grabbed, such as that which surrounded the Tonopah Test Range. As a result, and just before the dawning of the 1960s, plans were made for what became known as the Tonopah Test Range Airport. They were plans for the construction of a runway close to 20,000-feet in length. Just about anything – terrestrial or maybe even extraterrestrial – could fly out of the facility. And, largely, no-one would ever know.

The land-grabbing didn’t end there. In fact, it had barely begun. In this case, the grabbing was internal: in 1961 a wealth of land previously used by the U.S. Air Force was handed over to the Atomic Energy Commission, something which not all of the higher echelons of the Air Force were particularly happy about. They suddenly found out how the locals felt. From the 1960s though to the 1970s, the Nevada Test and Training Range performed a major role in the training of pilots destined to go into battle during the Vietnam War. By the late 1970s, the range’s staff were working on some deeply, secret programs. And “deeply” is a very apt term. One of the primary tasks of the personnel was to bury the wrecks of some of the ill-fated “stealth” aircraft tested out on the range. It was imperative that Soviet space-satellites didn’t take pictures of the crashed planes – and, in the process, secure significant data on America’s growing research into the field of stealth-based technology. So, in many cases, the crashed planes were buried – using bulldozers to ensure the aircraft and their remains were hidden deep below the desert floor. Ironically, given that the Russians were trying to figure out what was going on at the range, one of the aircraft which crashed and was buried – in 1984 – was a captured Russian MiG-23 aircraft.

Today, as well as being home to Area 51, and to the S-4 facility that Bob Lazar claimed he worked at briefly in the late 1980s, the Nevada Test and Training Range houses the Tolicha Peak Electronic Combat Range, the Eastman Airfield Target, and the Point Bravo Electronic Combat Range. That’s quite a history!

Among the many, many UFO reports out there, some of them have truly stood the test of time and proven to be even more unexplainable than most. These are the cases that have come from very credible witnesses, with corroborating evidence to show that they are not making all of this up, and it is cases like these that truly inspire wonder and awe. One such UFO encounter happened in the skies of Australia, and has served to incite debate and discussion to this day.

On August 31, 1954, a Lieutenant J.A. “Shamus” O’Farrell was returning to Royal Australian Navy Air Station Nowra, in New South Wales, aboard his Sea Fury aircraft. It had been a routine standard night-navigation exercise at dusk, and at 7:10 PM O’Farrell contacted the air base with a routine radio communication. Up until that point everything had been going smoothly and without issue, but things were about to get very strange. Shortly after this radio contact with the base, O’Farrell allegedly saw a very bright light closing in on him fast from his 1 o’clock position. This anomalous light then crossed in front of his aircraft to take up a position on his port side, where it appeared to match his speed. He then noticed a second bright light approaching from his 9 o’clock position, which passed the plane about a mile in front of it and then returned to the position of the original light. He would later describe each object as a “vague cigar shape with the bright light situated centrally on top.” He would say of what happened:

I was just over 12,000ft. It was a fine dark night. The stars were all out with no moon, no clouds, no bad weather and good visibility. A pleasant night for night flying. I had been airborne for about two hours and was somewhere in the Goulburn region, near Canberra. When I left Nowra, the radar there was not working, but they were hoping to get it on line by the time I returned. The operators asked me to call so that they could do a check-tune on me as I came in. I was surprised when I saw two aircraft, on either side of me, each with a single bright light above it, but with no navigation lights. In fact, it was quite a shock because everything was going well. I was keeping a lookout, constantly scanning from one side of the aircraft to the other. They came from astern and I looked out to one side and thought, ‘Gee, what is that?’ I continued to look around and there, on the other side, was another one. They were in formation with me, and holding their station with me and they were about the same distance out on either side. And then I thought about it for some time to make sure I wasn’t seeing things that weren’t there. But sure enough, I could see two dark cigar-shaped objects – not very long, about the size of a Dakota – but their central bright lights made their outline quite distinct. I could see no other details, no other lights – just one bright centrally placed light over the top of each mass.

The two mysterious objects would be reported as approaching and later leaving extremely fast, much faster than his own aircraft, later estimated as having been moving at 1,000 mph or more, and the shocked O’Farrell contacted Nowra to see if their radar was online yet and whether they were seeing this. After telling the base what had happened they confirmed that they had two objects on their radar that matched the position he described, after which the two lights fell into the 9 o’clock position and sped off to the northeast. The radar team would lose track of the objects after that, and at the time there was no rational explanation for what they could be. In an interview with ufologist Bill Chalker, O’Farrell would later say of the incident and his conversation with the base:

I said, “Nowra, this is 921. Do you have me on radar?” “And a few seconds later they came back and said, “Affirmative 921. We have you coming in from the west. We have another two contacts as well. Which one are you.” “I said, “I think I’m the central one.” And so they said, “Do a 180…for identification.” So I did a quick 180 and then continued on around and made it a 360 back to where I was going. “They said, “Yes, we’ve got you. You’re the centre aircraft.” I said that’s correct. They then said to me, “Who are the other two aircraft,” and I said, “I don’t know. I was hoping you would tell me, because I didn’t think there was anyone up here. They said, “Well there shouldn’t be, and they certainly shouldn’t be that close to you.”

So the conversation went on like this and I was very pleased to be talking to somebody because it gave me a lot of reassurance. With that these two aircraft came in quite close to me and I could really see the dark mass and that they were quite big, but I couldn’t make out any other lights or any other form of an aircraft. With that they took off and headed off to the north east at great speed. I was about to press the button and tell them at Nowra that the two aircraft were departing when Nowra called me up and said, “The other two aircraft appear to be departing at high speed to the north east. Is that correct?” and I said, “Yes!”. And they said, “Roger, we’ll see if we can track them.” They tracked them for a while and then lost them. I came in and landed at 7.30 (1930) and when I got there there were quite a few people waiting for me. I thought it was a bit strange and so they came over, and they said, “You sure you had aircraft out there!” and I said yes.

Upon landing, he was met by the Surgeon Commander, who would give him a full medical check-up to find nothing physically wrong with him. Although the Directorate of Naval Intelligence deemed O’Farrell to be a seasoned, well-respected pilot and “an entirely credible witness,” and despite this and the corroboration from the base radar, he would claim that the main attitude around the base was that no one completely believed it. After this, the case was quietly kept secret until it began to leak into the news in December of that year. Before long there were headlines all over the papers talking about the “Sea Fury Incident,” forcing the Royal Navy to make a statement. Incredibly, the Navy Minister would be quite forthcoming about what had happened, while stopping short of saying that these had been aliens from outer space. He would say:

It is a fact that on a night cross-country flight from Nowra on August 31, at 13,000 feet above Goulburn, a pilot in a Sea Fury observed two lights on his radar, with vague shapes underneath. The lights passed ahead of him at a very fast speed as he flew at 220 knots (just under 250mph). The pilot made contact with Nowra and advised them. It was later ascertained that the only other aircraft in the vicinity was a TAA Convair. This was passed by Naval Intelligence to RAAF Intelligence.

The news brought a great amount of unwanted attention to O’Farrell, who was afraid that this was going to ruin his career. He was approached by numerous news agencies who constantly harassed him, even as the military tried to distance itself from the whole affair and sweep it under the carpet. As this was going on he also faced a good amount of ridicule from those who didn’t believe him, including close colleagues. The other pilots thought he had lost his mind, and it all took its toll of O’Farrell, who continued to insist that he was telling the truth but just wanted to leave it behind him. He would say:

I was bit ashamed about it all. People thought that I had flipped my lid, lost control, done something silly. And it was a bit of a joke by the rest of the aircrew. People would have a few drinks and say to you, ‘Have a drink O’Farrell and tell us more about the flying saucers.’ As the years went by I became more embarrassed and I just wiped it out of my memory and never worried about it again. It has always intrigued me. It has always worried me. To this day I am as certain as I was then that I saw two objects flying in close formation with me. And I am convinced that they weren’t aeroplanes that come from the Navy, Army or the Air Force, or Civil aviation. Whatever they were, they were very fast craft and they very, very good performance. I saw no explanation, but I didn’t see any need to tell anybody else about it or talk about it.

However, he would never really be able to escape it. Over the years, O’Farrell’s case would be pursued by several UFO researchers, including Australian ufologist Bill Chalker and American UFO researcher Dr. Allen Hynek, who interviewed him and could find no rational explanation for what he had experienced. In particular, O’Farrell would remember how when he had met Hynek in 1973, the researcher had been very interested in the case, in that it was in his opinion one of the stronger cases he had come across. O’Farrell would say of this:

The interesting thing he (Hynek) said was that all of these sightings had been made by professional people in aviation. By that he meant they were military pilots, military aircrew, civil aviation operators, air traffic controllers, and the like, or airline pilots. These were the ones he was now (1973) going around meeting the people themselves and investigating. All the others he had written off and had been able to explain down to some other phenomena. It came to the point where he said, “Your sighting cannot be explained away.” And he left it at that. To this day I wouldn’t know where it came from or where it went.

Interestingly, the official files on the case would be classified for decades, and it was only after they were declassified that it would be learned that O’Farrell had not been as nuts as many had made him out to be. It would turn out that there had actually been two further independent witnesses to the event. One was an officer from the Department of Aviation who had been out repairing a navigation beacon when he had visually seen the two lights streak past shortly after the incident, and the objects had also been detected by an air traffic controller in the tower at Sydney’s Mascot Airport, who had logged in two strange fast-moving lights passing to the south of the city. Why had these reports been kept under wraps while O’Farrell was being lambasted by everyone as being a liar or a kook? Also rather odd is that the original tape of O’Farrell’s communication with the base during the incident has disappeared, as have several official files on the matter. Without those files, it is hard to say what is really going on here, but Chalker is convinced that this is a very credible account that deserves serious consideration, saying on the TV program The Extraordinary:

One has to bear in mind the credentials that come with the sighting. You have a highly qualified and experienced pilot, you have confirmation from the ground from the radar operator. You have two separate ground witnesses all confirming the presence of two unidentified aircraft of some description. And doing things that were apparently inexplicable beyond the capabilities apparent at that time.

The Sea Fury case has gone on to be considered one of the most credible unexplained UFO encounters out there, and there are many questions still lingering about it. What did O’Farrell see out there? Was this some kind of experimental aircraft or something else? Why were the other witness accounts covered up and why were the files doomed to be classified or to go missing entirely? It is hard to say that he could have possibly just been seeing things because there are other corroborating reports, such as the radar evidence and the other sightings, so what was going on here? Whatever the case may be, the Sea Fury UFO incident has managed to become a classic case that has continued to elude understanding.

Over the years (decades, in fact) there have been claims to the effect that more than a few people in the UFO field have been murdered for what they knew. We’re talking about those who allegedly got too close to “the truth,” and who just had to be exterminated by the likes of the Men in Black and hired assassins. There’s no doubt this is one of the most controversial angles of Ufology. For that reason, it’s a topic that should be examined carefully. Very carefully. Today, I’m going to share with you a number of such cases that, as I see it, are worth addressing. For example, there was the jump (or, maybe, the ruthless push) of the first Secretary of Defense, James Forrestal from the 16^th floor of the Bethesda Naval Hospital, Maryland on May 22, 1949. It has been rumored that it was top secret knowledge of UFOs and aliens that led to Forrestal’s breakdown. Ufologists will tell you that Forrestal – a man with a mind filled with swirling secrets – was overwhelmed by the dark, alien secrets he suddenly found himself burdened with. The only thing we know for sure is that just a couple of months before Forrestal’s life was no more, he told his long-time friend, William O. Douglas, an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court: “Bill, something awful is about to happen to me.” Something awful did happen. Death came for Forrestal. The very first fatal victim of a UFO cover-up? Maybe.

Now, let’s take a look at a now-dead writer, Danny Casolaro. From the late 1980s to the early 1990s, Casolaro claimed he was hot on the trail of what he called “The Octopus.” It was said to have been a worldwide organization with tentacles all across the world (hence the term “Octopus”) that manipulated major events, made murders look like suicides, and even sought to have us all under some kind of “New World Order” in the years ahead. The Octopus also had a connection to the UFO subject, said Casolaro. It was the summer of 1991 – specifically August 1 of that year – when the body of a middle-aged man was discovered in a hotel room in the Martinsburg, West Virginia Sheraton Inn. His body was lying in the shower. It was a grim sight for the maid that made the discovery. The man, it seemed, had committed suicide: his wrists were cut deep, something which effectively meant that without anyone to help him, the man was doomed. And, he was. It didn’t take more than a few moments for hotel staff to figure out who, exactly, the man was. He was identified by the person on the front-desk as none other than Danny Casolaro. He was an investigative journalist of the Woodward and Bernstein variety. Casolaro’s death was a big tragedy for his family and friends. Suicide is always a terrible tragedy – and not just for the victim, but also for those left behind who have to pick up the pieces. But, was Casolaro’s death really just the suicide that it appeared to be?

Many people in the field of conspiracy theorizing doubted the official theory for Casolaro’s death. More were fascinated by the UFO angle to it all.  Casolaro said he had proof of the existence of the so-called secret group known as Majestic 12. Supposedly, it oversaw Area 51, and the wreckage and alien bodies said to have been found in New Mexico in the summer of 1947 – the legendary Roswell affair, of course. For the record, the Majestic 12 issue has been an integral one to the field of Ufology for decades. For some UFO investigators, Majestic 12 is the real deal. For others, though, it’s nothing but government disinformation designed to confuse the Roswell incident even further. By early 1991, Casolaro’s head was spinning – which is hardly surprising. Unfortunately, Casolaro did not live to see the truth of the Octopus unveiled – by himself, he hoped. The matter of his death in August 1991 ensured that. While Casolaro’s death could have been due to suicide – certainly, that’s what it looked like – there were solid and valid reasons to suggest that his death was due to something very different. At the time of his passing, Casolaro was certainly not in a state of woe or depression. It was the exact opposite: he was energized by new leads, and new revelations, in his quest to find the truth of the Octopus, its activities, and its motivations.

Now, onto the matter of the infamous Roswell “UFO crash” affair of July 1947. Miriam Bush was someone who knew exactly what happened just outside of Roswell in early July of 1947. Not only that, she may well have paid for that knowledge with her life. Miriam has, at times, been incorrectly described as a nurse who worked at the military hospital at the Roswell Army Air Field. She was not: Miriam was actually an executive secretary at the facility. The distinction may sound small, but the fact is that Bush’s position meant that she would have been in a prime position to see the mangled bodies when they were secretly brought to the base. It’s hardly surprising, given the circumstances and the subsequent warnings issued to Bush and others in the base hospital at the time, that Miriam Bush became deeply paranoid and even in fear of her life. Although she had been told by high-ranking personnel at the base never, ever to discuss what she had seen, Bush secretly chose to confide in her family, but warning them to never tell anyone what had happened and what she knew. For Bush, though, the Roswell affair came to dominate her life: she became even more paranoid, entered into a loveless marriage, and soon started hitting the bottle to a serious degree. Miriam would soon be a full-blown alcoholic. Such were the effects of what can happen when finds oneself tangled in a conspiracy as disturbing and dark as the Roswell event surely was.

For Miriam Bush, matters came to a head – and to a shocking and suspicious end – in the late 1980s. Without warning, and on a particular day in December 1989, she took off for San Jose, California and checked into a local motel under her sister’s name – a strange action, and which further suggests that she was concerned she was being watched. After all, why would she try and obfuscate her real identity, if she had nothing to hide? The very next day, Bush was found dead in that very same motel room: a plastic-bag was around her neck. It had been tied tightly. Marks on her arms were indicative of a scuffle having occurred at some point after she checked in the motel. Despite the evidence suggesting she was murdered, the official conclusion was that Bush had taken her own life.

Morris K. Jessup

In 1955, one of the most controversial of all the many and varied UFO books published in the fifties was released – and, for the UFO field, to a distinct fanfare. Its title was The Case for the UFO. The author was Morris K. Jessup. His book was a detailed study of the theoretical power-sources for UFOs: what was it that made them fly? How could they perform such incredible, aerial feats, such as coming to a complete stop in the skies, hovering at incredible heights? Jessup believed that the vitally important answers lay in the domain of gravity. Or, as he saw it: anti-gravity. Jessup may well have been onto something, as it wasn’t long at all before the world of officialdom was on Jessup’s back – specifically senior figures in the U.S., Navy. And it was one particularly intriguing office of the Navy that was watching Jessup – a “special weapons” division. Clearly, someone in the U.S. Navy was interested in, and perhaps even concerned by, Jessup’s findings and theories. Maybe, that same office of the Navy was worried that Jessup just might stumble onto the same technology that was being used to fly Uncle Sam’s very own UFOs – those UFOs which the military were very happy for the public to perceive them as alien spacecraft, as it all helped their long-term plan to fabricate an alien invasion. Just like Miriam Bush,  Jessup became deeply worried – paranoid, even – that he was being spied on by certain elements of the U.S. government. In the early evening of April 20, 1959, the lifeless body of Morris Jessup was found in his car, which was parked in the Matheson Hammock Park in Miami, Florida. The car’s engine was still running and a hosepipe, affixed to the exhaust, had been fed through the driver’s side window. Jessup was dead from the effects of carbon-monoxide. Jessup’s body was found by a man named John Goode, who worked at the park. Shocked at the sight before him, Goode quickly called the police, who arrived in no time at all. The verdict was suicide. Not everyone in the UFO field at that time agreed.

UFOs: What’s missing?

In any endeavor, the person(s) experiencing it, comes away – usually – with something satisfying (besides their effort).

Whether it’s winning a race, climbing a mountain, drinking an exceptional wine, obtaining a dinosaur bone, obtaining an object (or person) that one loves, growing a tasty, ripe tomato, et cetera, et cetera.

But within the UFO world, what does anyone bring back that is substantive, worthwhile, or satisfying as part of their experience?

Has anyone brought to the UFO table a photo or film/video that provides proof of a tangible thing that removes the “unidentified” label, replacing it with an “identified” sobriquet?

Has a UFO abductee (experiencer) brought home something from their “experience” that convinces others that they were “abducted” (kidnapped) by entities outside our normal reality?

Have UFO researchers/investigators enlightened anyone about a supposed UFO reality?

That is, has anyone made a case for a UFO reality, a case that withstands scrutiny or withering opprobrium of even the faltering kind (like that from obtuse skeptics)?

Nope.

Like the search for The Fountain of Youth or the gold of El Dorado or even Moby Dick, no one with a UFO interest, even a serious interest, has brought anything resembling an explanation or supposition of a tangible UFO reality, even though the circum- stantial overlay indicates that there is something there.

What has gone wrong? What is wrong?

WITNESS STATMENT

 This was recorded a few weeks ago in Swindon. It was extremely bizarre to see a black triangle shaped object floating in the sky. There wasn’t really anything to indicate the size or proximity of the object. It just gave me that weird unsettled feeling when you genuinely have no idea what something is and what it’s doing.

It’s not a drone and it’s not something that’s being held in place or bobbing about like a balloon.

There have been over a dozen UFO sightings reported by commercial airline pilots in Canada in recent years.

One too-close encounter even forced a plane to dive to avoid it, injuring two flight attendants, while a 'shiny, silver object' was seen over Toronto, and one pilot spotted an aircraft in 2018 that appeared to be moving at Mach 4 - making it faster than any known aircraft in the world. 

The revelation comes shortly after the CIA declassified two thousand documents on UFOs over America, dating back to 1970s. 

The XXXX dossier with nearly 3,000 pages of documents about Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAPs) - the US government's official term for what are commonly called UFOs - was published on The Black Vault in January. 

A DailyMail.com review of the files uncovered a bevy of perplexing - yet unverified - accounts of mysterious disks tracking across the sky, spewing beams of light across small towns, causing explosions and even a few claims of military officers confronting aliens that come out of outlandish vehicles.

Other documents show correspondence between CIA officers about the UFO sightings. Sometimes the officers brush off observers' stories as purely superstitious, even when another explanation isn't clear. But in several instances the officers show genuine concern that perhaps something XXXXX is at play.

In Canada, the Civil Aviation Daily Occurrence Report System (CADORS), operated by federal department Transport Canada, has a database of almost 300,000 incident reports, which include any event involving an aircraft, not just UFO sightings.

 UFOs don't necessarily confirm the presence of aliens, as some believe, but simply demonstrates there are objects in the sky that are hard to identify. 

Airline pilots in Canada have reported dozens of run-ins with potential UFOs (stock)

CADORS is searchable, although knowing the correct terms to search with is tricky - for instance, a search back to 2000 looking for 'UFO' populated just one result.

Nevertheless, there are dozens of reports of potential UFO sightings hidden deep in the CADORS archives.

There were several notable incidents, most of them happening in recent years, although one intriguing one took place in 2005. 

On October 21, 2005, local air traffic controllers 'received reports from four aircraft flight crews of a shiny, silver object over Toronto.'

It was reported to be 30,000 feet above the ground, at which point it suddenly turned and moved quickly southeast to Lake Ontario.

Another incident happened on January 10, 2015, 'multiple aircraft reported a very large object with a small white light in the middle, surrounded by a halo' as it appeared to come down from 41,000 feet in the air.

That incident reportedly took place before dawn.

The Pentagon has confirmed that images and videos showing unidentified flying objects buzzing over Navy warships off the coast of California 'were taken' by branch personnel. Critics have said that this image appears to show a balloon but it's classified as unknown 

On May 30, 2016, an Air Canada Express flight traveling from Montreal to Toronto reported an 'unidentified flying object, round in shape,' which was traveling at more than 550km/h.

Arguably the most significant incident came in November of the same year. 

On November 14, 2016, a Porter Airlines flight at over 8,000 feet dove to avoid an object that was 'solid…and shaped like an upright doughnut or inner tube.'

Initially, the object was described only as not likely being a balloon, but two crew members were injured, prompting a Transportation Safety Board (TSB) investigation into the incident.

The TSB report, which came two weeks after the incident, claimed the object was 'approximately 5 to 8 feet in diameter.'

It also stated that the 'captain overrode the autopilot in order to quickly descend the aircraft under the object,' which is how the two flight attendants were injured as they were securing the aircraft.

None of the 54 passengers were hurt in the incident, though.

'TSB was not able to positively identify the object,' the agency said to VICE World News. 

Another incident happened on March 16, 2017, when two WestJet flights near Okanagan Valley in British Columbia saw a 'bright, white strobe-type light' above them at night.

The vague details in the CADORS and the low number of reports over the years suggests many potential UFO sightings are going unreported. 

Roswell, New Mexico is famous for the rumored UFO sightings that happen annually

Former Royal Canadian Air Force pilot John 'Jock' Williams believes many more sightings never make official reports.

'Pilots are probably not reporting about 90 per cent of the things they're seeing, because they know it could have lengthy career implications. For most pilots, it's not worth it,' Williams continued. 

'That's why I believe that each of these guys saw what they reported.' 

Transport Canada chose not to comment on the individual observations made by airline crews.

'The events that are entered into CADORS are entered as they are reported to Transport Canada,' a spokesperson for Transport Canada said to VICE World News.

'Transport Canada endeavours to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the data contained within CADORS. However, the information within should be treated as preliminary, unsubstantiated, and subject to change.'

Some of the events recorded do have explanations, such as the flights that saw 'up to two dozen evenly-spaced bright objects in a line' on December 26, 2019, with it later being identified as SpaceX's Starlink internet satellites.

A UFO investigator told VICE World News that the sightings of these potential UFOs are concerning.

'CADORS clearly shows that these types of incidents are occurring in airspace where thousands of passengers are potentially travelling every day,' Chris Rutkowski said.

'Regardless of one's belief or disbelief in UFOs, this is certainly a concern from a flight safety and public welfare perspective.'

Perhaps no incident was harder to explain than what a Kalitta Charters Boeing 747 cargo flight saw on April 30, 2018.

The plane was travelling above the Northwest Territories as it was traveling from New York to Alaska.

Suddenly, a member of the crew saw 'an object flying sporadically, estimated at (60 to 80 thousand feet) and moving at Mach 4.'

There was no way for the crew to accurately measure the speed, but Mach 4 would make it the fastest moving object in aviation history.

That mark previously belonged to the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, which traveled at speeds just above Mach 3.3 before being retired in 1999.

The report of that sighting took over a year and a half to add to CADORS, suggesting that the moment left a long-lasting impression on the flight's crew. 

Rutkowski helped lead a survey recently that noted a marked increase in UFO sightings in 2020.

According to CTV News, there was a 46 percent increase in UFO sightings in Canada in 2020 - a total of 1,243 sightings - likely spurred by the coronavirus pandemic as more people stayed home and turned their attentions upwards. 

Rutkowski claimed that 13 percent of the sightings had no explanation at this point.

Reports of the Canadian sightings come a year after the Pentagon confirmed the authenticity of three videos captured by U.S. Navy fighter jets that appeared to show UFOs. 

In late February, the FBI confirmed it was 'aware' of an American Airlines flight which had a close encounter a fast-moving, 'long cylindrical object' on a trip from Cincinnati to Phoenix.

The encounter, which occurred at 36,000 feet above the remote northeast corner of New Mexico, west of Des Moines on Sunday, involved AA Flight 2292, an Airbus A320, according to The Drive. 

The apparent encounter shares various similarities with another incident that occurred in the same area just under three years ago.

In that incident, two pilots on different aircraft – a Learjet and an Airbus – reported having close encounters with a mysterious object flying above them.

The photos were leaked from a Pentagon investigation of UFOs by the UAP Task Force, which has been gathering evidence for a report for Congress that's due in June. 

The images, obtained by filmmaker Jeremy Corbell, show unidentified objects flying above four US destroyers, including the USS Kidd Navy destroyer, in 2019. 

One of the images appears to be a pyramid-shaped object while others were thought to be drones or balloons; however, the Navy has listed them as unknown.

The confirmation comes a week after Admiral Michael Gilday, the chief of naval operations, admitted that he has no idea where the swarm of mysterious Tic Tac-shaped drones that menaced four US destroyers in July 2019 originated. 

When the Pentagon declassified the three Navy videos last year, they admitted they didn't know what was seen in them.

 'The Department of Defense has authorized the release of three unclassified Navy videos, one taken in November 2004 and the other two in January 2015, which have been circulating in the public domain after unauthorized releases in 2007 and 2017,' said Susan Gough, a Defense Department spokesperson in a statement.

The statement added that the videos were released after a 'thorough review' which determined that the unclassified videos do 'not reveal any sensitive capabilities or systems, and does not impinge on any subsequent investigations of military air space incursions by unidentified aerial phenomena.'

One of the clips shows the 2004 'Tic Tac' incident that was recorded over the Pacific Ocean. A second video was captured off the coast of Jacksonville, Florida, in 2015.

Lawmakers have been calling for the Pentagon for years to open up its classified  records about the encounters, citing national security concerns.

In January, as part of a COVID-19 relief package, Congress set a deadline of June 1 for US intelligence agencies and the Defense Department to release UFOs and unidentified aerial phenomena.

Also in January, the CIA declassified around 2,000 documents related to UFOs dating back to the 1970s.

A dossier with more than 700 files about Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAPs) was published on The Black Vault website.

One of the reports describes how seemingly urgent UFO information was hand-delivered to the CIA's deputy director for science and technology in 1976.

Most details about the information were redacted in the document on The Black Vault website.

A second document from June 1976 appears to request an update on the review, but there is no record of the ordeal after that moment.

In 1976, there was also a sighting of a UFO in Morocco, although that document is also heavily redacted.

The full-page report is covered in 25 black lines that appeared to have been made directly with a pen. 

In another report, CIA officials discuss the possibility that UFOs were behind a 'mysterious blast' in the small Russian town of Sasovo in 1991.

In that report, residents reported seeing a 'fiery sphere' drop from the sky before a shockwave tore through the town, leveling an entire block.

The report said investigators had failed to come to a conclusion about the cause of the explosion.

Flying a helicopter on Mars: NASA's Ingenuity

If you know the history of the Men in Black phenomenon, you’ll also know that the whole thing began in the early 1950s with a guy named Albert Bender. He found himself on the wrong side of the creepy MIB. It was something that altered his life forever. And also something that led to the coining of those three, memorable words: Men in Black. But, what about Bender’s life before that trio of menacing, strange characters were on the scene? Not many people – even in Ufology – are aware of those earlier years; a time when, for Bender, the nightmare had yet to begin. With that said, let’s have a look at what went down in that pre-MIB period. It all began in a dark, eerie attic in a three-story, old house at 784 Broad Street, Bridgeport, Connecticut. And it revolved around a young man (Bender, of course), who was an undeniable eccentric and someone with a fascination for the realms of monsters, the supernatural, alchemy, the paranormal, and the occult. And with a significant degree of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and an obsession with clocks. Without him, they (the Men in Black) may never have left the terrible marks – or, perhaps, more correctly, the ugly scars – on society they most assuredly have. But, I’m getting a little bit ahead of myself. Read on…

The early years of Bender’s life were nothing out of the ordinary. In fact, quite the opposite was the case. Born in 1921, Bender lived in Duryea, Pennsylvania, where he worked in a factory. In the aftermath of the terrible attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in 1941, Bender joined the United States Army Air Corps, stationed at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland. He served from June 1942 to October 1943 – as a dental technician – and was given an honorable discharge. Bender, his mother Ellen, and his stepfather, Michael Ardolino, made a home for themselves in Bridgeport, Connecticut. And, that’s when things started to get weird. Very weird. Too weird, some might say.  Michael J. Bielawa – a poet and the author of Wicked Bridgeport – states that Bender “…was employed as chief timekeeper at Acme Shear Co., the world’s largest manufacturer of scissors. The factory was located across the Pequonnock River from downtown at Hicks and Knowlton Streets. Perhaps it was Bender’s sense of humor, but in an ironic salute to his job Bender filled his living space with an assortment of twenty chiming clocks. Every fifteen minutes, half hour and on the hour, 784 Broad Street resounded with the din of bells, bells, bells.” The strangeness had well and truly begun. It was followed by Bender’s decision to convert the attic room in which he lived into what can accurately be termed as his “Chamber of Horrors.”

Artwork of bloodsucking bats, monsters, ghouls and skulls adorned the walls. There was barely a space for wallpaper. Imagery of vampires, the Moon, a horse’s head, and black cats could be seen. Interestingly, Bender painted a picture that showed a cloaked man wearing a fedora hat while prowling around an old, tree-shrouded cemetery after sunset. Both the cloak and the hat were, of course, black in color. Does that mean the MIB were already getting their claws into Bender? I should stress there’s no evidence of that, but who knows? Fedoras were, and still are, part and parcel of the outfits of the MIB. In light of that, just maybe there’s a part of the story that has been lost forever. Bender was very much a loner (he would marry later, though). Girlfriends were nowhere in sight. Much of his spare-time was taken up watching sci-fi movies and horror flicks on Saturday nights. By Bender’s own admission, his visits to the local cinema were always made alone. As were the late-night walks back home. When the few friends Bender had called on him, he would entertain them with spooky sound-effects that boomed around the room. It was all good fun – albeit undeniably odd. And, it surely cannot have been healthy to have lived in such a claustrophobic situation. Even Bender himself had to admit: “Late at night the attic became a creepy place.” No shit!

Interestingly, Riley Crabb – the director of Borderland Sciences Research Associates and who followed the Bender affair – went on record as saying of Bender that, for years, he had: “…dabbled in magic, with no success in table-tipping, and surprising success with a yes-or-no technique using the Holy Bible. There was a history of psychic phenomena in his family.”
