In a time where Americans and their leaders agree on almost nothing, who would have thought UFOs would unite us?
The truth is out there and former President Obama, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) andeven former President Trump are interested.
UFOs were a political and cultural force in midcentury America and the ‘90s. Now, as we await a Pentagon report on the subject, they’re back in vogue, generating segments on “60 Minutes,” making their way into interviews with former presidents and trending across the internet.
Here’s what you need to know, no tin foil hats required.
Why is everyone talking about UFOs right now?
Air and Space Magazine dubbed 2019 “the Year of UFOs,” but it may actually be 2021.
The Pentagon is expected to release a report this month on UFO sightings, the result of a program designed to record and investigate sightings by the U.S. military.
Defense officials and some lawmakers are publicly pushing for the release of information, including Rubio, the highest-ranking Republican member of the Senate Intelligence Committee.
“We cannot allow the stigma of UFO’s to keep us from seriously investigating this. The forthcoming report is one step in that process, but it will not be the last,” he said in a statement to the Tampa Bay Times.
But we probably wouldn’t be here without former Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada. Reid is among the loudest voices calling for information on UFOs.
In a bipartisan effort in 2007, he and late Sens. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) and Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) secured $22 million in funding for the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program. Intelligence officials claimed it was disbanded in 2012, though former employees later told the New York Times that it was still operational through 2017.
Meanwhile, Reid continues to give interviews about UFOs. “Congress should make this an ongoing program. I don’t think the report is going to tell us too much,” he told the Guardian in an interview published Tuesday. “I think they need to study it more and not just have one shot at it.”
What’s in the report?
Passed in December, the Intelligence Authorization Act for the 2021 fiscal year directs the task force to deliver a report to Congress within 180 days on collected reports, with information on how it will analyze and track future sightings. And that report must be unclassified.
But it may not contain the validation some are looking for. While much of the program’s details remain classified as research is conducted, what has emerged indicates a growing military interest in UFOs as a national security threat.
They’re taking UFOs literally — unidentified flying objects that could have come from anywhere, such as another country. In other words, the threats they’re looking for are of the more terrestrial variety.
Still, new details might emerge about the events that have been reported. Military pilots describe erratic movements and lights that seem to defy physics, and aircraft shaped like a “Tic Tac.”
What’s different about 2021?
As with many conspiracy theories, UFO devotees have claimed for decades that government disclosure is imminent. The government has repeatedly dismissed discussion of UFOs.
The Times’ archives and those of other papers are full of officials downplaying reports of sightings. Sincere believers in the extraterrestrial are framed as kooky punchlines across news, TV and film.
In 1977, NASA denied a request from President Carter — who said he had seen a UFO years earlier — to open a government investigation, calling the idea “wasteful and probably unproductive.”
The denial came after the Air Force shut down an investigative program called Project Blue Book in 1969, saying it uncovered little in two decades at “considerable expense,” according to an Associated Press story.
But there’s something different about this round of UFO mania. Now, it seems, Americans and their elected officials are on the same side (though President Biden has not indicated his stance). And the government has an actual deadline.
It’s also not an unexpected resurgence in public interest: We’re in the midst of a national reckoning with what it means for something to be true, prompting new demand for disclosures about everything from policing to ballot counting.
Belief in conspiracies (many much more dangerous) surged during Trump’s presidency, aided in part by the president. He also introduced a space element, establishing the Space Force and the new task force.
Hollywood and internet culture have also helped resurrect the UFO in public imagination. The “Storm Area 51” meme, which began as a Facebook event page, went viral and ended with about 2,000 people gathering in the Nevada desert in 2019 to joke about “rescuing” aliens and taking pictures.

What about aliens?
Americans love aliens. Perhaps you grew up watching a galaxy far, far away in “Star Wars” (1977), Sigourney Weaver fighting to survive in Ridley Scott’s “Alien” (1979) or Steven Spielberg’s “E.T.” (1982).
Not your speed? Maybe you listened to Blink-182’s “Aliens Exist” (1999) or loved the 1964 cult holiday classic “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians,” or consider yourself a fan of “The X-Files,” a landmark in the our-government-is-hiding-aliens storytelling tradition.
There’s a story for every interest group and time period, often with a trademark flying saucer and an undercurrent of distrust in authority. But the more information that becomes public, the more it becomes clear that what a UFO is and whether extraterrestrial life exists are two distinct questions.

— The Supreme Court overturned a rule used by the 9th Circuit Court in California that presumed immigrants seeking asylum were telling the truth unless an immigration judge had made an “explicit” finding that they were not credible, David G. Savage reports.
— The Biden administration dispatched Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken to Costa Rica on Tuesday to take Central American officials to task on corruption in their countries and to examine how they can more efficiently block migration to the U.S. He could face a tough crowd, Tracy Wilkinson writes.
— Texas Democrats pulled off a dramatic last-ditch walkout from the state House of Representatives on Sunday night to block passage of one of the most restrictive voting bills in the U.S. But it could still be resurrected in a special session.
The view from California
— A Northern California county has voted to rename Jim Crow Road after a debate over the racist implications of the name and accusations of “woke cancel culture,” Brittny Mejia reports.
— From Taryn Luna: A historic California task force met for the first time Tuesday with the ultimate goal of recommending reparations for descendants of enslaved people and those affected by slavery.

After decades without a NASA mission, it's Venus' time to shine.
NASA will send two new missions to Venus to learn more about how the planet's hellish atmosphere turned so hostile over its history.
The announcement came on Wednesday (June 2) during NASA administrator Bill Nelson's livestreamed State of NASA speech. The two missions, called DAVINCI+ and VERITAS were selected from NASA's shortlist of four spacecraft for the next round of Discovery missions; the other two contenders would have visited Jupiter's volcanic moon Io and Neptune's largest moon Triton.
DAVINCI+ (short for Deep Atmosphere Venus Investigation of Noble Gases, Chemistry and Imaging) will plunge through the thick Venus atmosphere to learn more about it changes over time. Meanwhile, VERITAS (Venus Emissivity, Radio Science, InSAR, Topography and Spectroscopy) mission will use radar to map Venus' surface in detail from orbit.

"We hope these missions will further our understanding of how Earth evolved, and why it's currently habitable when others in our solar system are not," Nelson said, alluding to the recent NASA refocusing on climate change under the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden, who took office in January.
"Planetary science is critical in answering key questions that we have as humans, like, Are we alone? What implications beyond our solar system could these two missions [show]? This is really exciting stuff," Nelson said.
Discovery missions are capped at $500 million, excluding costs for the launch vehicle and mission operations. Both new Venus missions will launch between 2028 and 2030 and will carry technology demonstrations as well as the main science components, NASA said in a press release.
VERITAS will host the Deep Space Atomic Clock-2, a successor to similar technology that launched to Earth orbit in June 2019. "The ultra-precise clock signal generated with this technology will ultimately help enable autonomous spacecraft maneuvers and enhance radio science observations," NASA stated.
DAVINCI+ will host the Compact Ultraviolet to Visible Imaging Spectrometer (CUVIS), the agency added, which will make high resolution measurements of ultraviolet light using a new instrument based on freeform optics," NASA officials wrote. "These observations will be used to determine the nature of the unknown ultraviolet absorber in Venus' atmosphere that absorbs up to half the incoming solar energy."
There was little else new in the State of NASA speech, as it included allusions to climate change science, the Artemis moon-landing program and other recent announcements by the Biden administration. Nelson was sworn in as administrator May 3 and the career space politician opened his speech with anecdotes from his six-day flight on the space shuttle Columbia in 1986.
He used those memories of the fragility of the Earth to reintroduce the Earth System Observatory system the agency said it would design last week to combat global warming. "Anyone who has flown [in space], or who sees these dramatic photos and videos, you look at the rim of the Earth and you can actually see the thin film of the atmosphere," Nelson said. "You realize that that is what sustains all of life … and you could see from that altitude how we're messing it up."
The new observatory system includes five planned satellites, the first of which would launch in 2023, Nelson said. He hinted there would be more to come in terms of climate science announcements. "The Earth System Observatory is just one of the many missions that we have on the horizon, and I'm excited to share more about the exciting future we have in store here at NASA," he said.
The new administrator also paid tribute to the Perseverance rover mission, which landed on Mars on Feb. 18 and helped to launch the Ingenuity drone for the first-ever flights on Mars. "Since then, we've created oxygen on Mars and we've seen Ingenuity — that little helicopter — defeating the odds and outliving its planned lifespan. It transitioned from a tech demo to a scout," Nelson said. (Ingenuity experienced an anomaly on its latest flight, but pulled through to a safe landing.)
Other NASA activities Nelson highlighted included the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope "in just a few months" (NASA and its partner on the mission, the European Space Agency, had announced on Tuesday (June 1) that the mission may delay a few weeks to November) the beginning of the commercial crew program in 2020, and ongoing development for the Artemis moon-landing program.
Nelson said nothing about the moon-landing deadline of 2024, originally proposed by the administration of President Donald Trump; during a news conference held on Friday (May 28), NASA Chief Financial Officer Steve Shinn acknowledged the timeline could be pushed, "because space development is so hard." Instead, Nelson focused on the program's goal to put the first woman and (a new announcement from April) the first person of color on the moon. "The United States must and will continue to lead the way globally, not just in exploration, but also in equity," he said.
The address also included a cameo prerecorded video from "Star Trek: The Original Series" captain William Shatner, best known as Captain James T. Kirk to Trekkies, mainly pondering "why we exist" and NASA's aspirations to seek out habitable environments in the universe.
Nelson's speech today left out mention of the troubled Artemis human landing system (HLS) development. Contract competitors Blue Origin and Dynetics have protested the award of that contract to SpaceX in April; during Nelson's confirmation hearing, senators pushed him about the importance of having multiple different systems to ensure competitive results. The U.S. Government Accountability Office has until Aug. 4 to decide whether NASA should award a second contract to build a second, redundant HLS.
Nelson also did not talk about commercial development of low Earth orbit, which received $101.1 million in Biden's budget request for fiscal year 2022, which begins in October. The value is up nearly 500% from the previous year. Involvement in the International Space Station is still a priority of the new administration; Biden's $1.3 million budget request is roughly equivalent to 2021's allocation.

Scientists looked into Earth's ancient history and found that it would take serious action in reducing fossil fuel emissions to prevent our climate from reaching prehistoric warming levels.
An international team of researchers has peered into the past to piece together the most complete history to date of carbon dioxide (CO2) levels on Earth over the last 66 million years in a new study. With this work, they aimed to bolster our understanding of the link between CO2 and climate, show how things have really changed since the time when dinosaurs last walked planet Earth and look to Earth's future as climate change continues to threaten our planets and its inhabitants.
With this study, the team showed how, without a significant reduction in fossil fuel emissions, Earth will soon reach CO2 levels as high as they were about 50 million years ago.
"If we allow fossil fuel burning to continue to grow, our grandchildren may experience CO2 levels that haven't been seen on Earth for around 50 million years, a time when crocodiles roamed the Arctic," lead researcher James Rae, a researcher at the University of St. Andrews School of Earth and Environmental Sciences in Scotland, said in a statement.
"CO2 has transformed the face of our planet before," Rae said, and "unless we cut emissions as quickly as possible, it will do it again."
In this study, which was published Monday (May 31) in the journal the Annual Review of Earth and Planetary Sciences, the team analyzed data taken over the last 15 years. This data came from previous research that took samples of ancient mud from the deep-sea floor.
These ancient mud cores contained microscopic fossils and molecules that accumulated over time. These samples contain preserved information about CO2 levels and climate conditions from the past.
So, by looking at these records of ancient climate history, the team was able to map out CO2 levels over time. This allowed them to compare modern-day CO2 levels with prehistoric levels and get a sense of what our world might look like if we return to these extreme climate conditions.
"For instance," Rae said, "the last time CO2 was as high as it is today, enough ice melted to raise sea level by 20 meters [66 feet], and it was warm enough for beech trees to grow on Antarctica."

It might look like a postcard from Arizona, but this snapshot shows something much more exotic: the planet Mars, as seen by NASA's Curiosity rover.
The image is a combination of 21 individual photographs the rover took recently to study a strange type of wispy cloud over its Gale Crater home. Scientists realized two Earth years ago that the cloud type was forming earlier in the Martian year than they expected. So this Martian year, Curiosity was watching for the early clouds, and it was not disappointed. The clouds did indeed show up beginning in late January, when the robotic skywatcher began documenting the wispy, ice-rich clouds scattering sunlight in sometimes-colorful displays.
"I always marvel at the colors that show up: reds and greens and blues and purples," Mark Lemmon, an atmospheric scientist with the Space Science Institute in Colorado, said in a NASA statement. "It's really cool to see something shining with lots of color on Mars."
Strangely, these clouds appear higher in the Mars atmosphere than those clouds scientists typically see on the planet, according to NASA. Usually, if a cloud passes over Curiosity, the structures are full of water ice and float about 37 miles (60 kilometers) above the Martian surface.
The clouds in Curiosity's new photos are higher in the atmosphere, although NASA didn't specify their altitude. The distinction may reflect a different composition, clouds of frozen carbon dioxide or dry ice, according to the agency, although the scientists aren't yet confident in that explanation.

The clouds are at their prettiest just after sunset, when the last light makes the ice crystals glow, which is why scientists call them noctilucent, or night-shining. (Curiosity can monitor these noctilucent clouds with both its black-and-white navigation cameras and its color Mast Camera.)
Some of these clouds even appear a bit iridescent when the cloud particles are very similar sizes, Lemmon said, which typically happens when clouds have just formed and have grown at the same speed.

William Shatner discusses The UnXplained’s major crossover event with Ancient Aliens, and what Gene Rodenberry knew about extraterrestrial life.
Willam Shatner’s The UnXlplained and Ancient Aliens are combining forces to figure out the mysteries of the universe. Typically, Friday nights on the History Channel include Ancient Aliens, then an episode of The UnXplained. This Friday, however, History will join the shows together in a two-hour special. Shatner is joining Giorgio Tsoukalos and the Ancient Alienscrew for a special called “William Shatner Meets Ancient Aliens.”
Den of Geek’s was able to catch up with Shatner and get some insight into what to expect on Friday’s crossover event and his thoughts on UFOs and extraterrestrial life. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
Brandon Fugal is the owner of Skinwalker Ranch. As the Chairman of Colliers International in Utah, Brandon is one of the most prominent businessmen and real estate developers in the Intermountain West. From an early age, he has also been fascinated with the mysteries of our universe and the question of whether or not we are alone. In 2016, Brandon purchased Skinwalker Ranch from aerospace tycoon Robert Bigelow in order to investigate and study the strange and unexplainable phenomena that has been reported there for more than two centuries.

Alejandro Rojas: When was it you first heard about the ranch and what is it that you heard?
Brandon Fugal: The ranch was first brought to my attention when I was at Barnes and Noble, back in 2006, and saw Dr. Colm Kelleher and George Knapp’s book The Hunt for the Skinwalker on the shelf. I actually bought it and read it on the weekend. I found it to be very interesting. And that was about it.
I read the book, found it interesting, especially as it relates to being a Utah property and, you know, a very intriguing account of strange activity not far, just hours, from where I live. But upon finishing the book, I put it on the shelf and didn’t really think about it any further until 2015 when I was contacted by two of Robert Bigelow’s science advisors with the question as to whether I would be willing to entertain a potential joint venture or acquisition of the property for the purpose of advancing the research beyond what Mr. Bigelow had done for 20 years. I had developed a good relationship with these science advisors through another effort that I had been involved with a decade ago.
They had a high degree of respect for me, thankfully, and confidence that I would be a worthy successor to Mr. Bigelow’s interest in a program regarding the property. I quickly agreed. I was intrigued and quickly agreed to meet with Mr. Bigelow to discuss a potential joint venture or acquisition of the property. I flew down to Las Vegas to meet with he and others, including Dr. Kelleher, to discuss not only the history of the property and their investigation, but a new structure moving forward. Upon meeting them, I disclosed to them that I was approaching the topic as a healthy skeptic and that I had never seen a UFO, ghost, or anything of the sort. And that I believe that there was most likely a natural prosaic explanation for what had been reported in the book and on the property.
They were amused and shared with me the reality of what their investigation revealed. They also disclosed that the ranch had been part of a five-year Pentagon black budget program studying the UFO phenomenon and that, although the results of that investigation remain classified and confidential – how do I say this? The phenomenon is real. It was interesting, so we took the discussion forward. I had my attorneys work with his legal counsel and in April of 2016 I acquired the property.
I first saw the property one week before closing on the purchase, flying in on my private helicopter with Jim Morris, who you see on the History Channel series as the ranch manager. I have had a long relationship with Jim Morris in that he was my first big commercial real estate developer client when I was 18 years old, back in 1991, when he was developing class A office buildings in our market. As a confidant and someone with military experience, I felt it was important to bring him with me to inspect the property for the first time and establish this new phase of ownership and investigation.
He also was very skeptical and had never seen anything unusual in his life that would qualify as a UFO sighting or paranormal experience. He has had a special relationship with the Indian tribes spanning decades, raising millions of dollars for scholarships and providing financial aid,and his great respect for the Native American people has been a key part of our community engagement.
Rojas: So are you still as skeptical as you were about something unusual going on at the ranch?
Fugal: No. So people ask me all the time whether I am now a believer based on what we have seen and recorded during my ownership of the ranch. The honest, most direct answer I can provide is that I am not a believer. I am an experiencer. I know for a fact that it is real and have witnessed with my own eyes, with other credible witnesses at my side, what can only be described as daylight sightings of exotic craft over Skinwalker Ranch.
Rojas: Do you mind describing one of those incidents?
Fugal: Yeah. You bet. For the first six months of my ownership and stewardship of the property, I did not personally witness or see anything unusual. But, six months into our investigation, I had an experience while entertaining a visiting dignitary and his security detail that involved an undeniable sighting of what can only be described as a 40 to 50 foot long silver, grayish disc-like object that performed maneuvers that were stunning and defy conventional explanation.
This was in broad daylight with multiple witnesses present. During that same afternoon, we experienced everything from our smartphones being completely drained from about 80% charge to zero to other electromagnetic anomalies, even acute medical episodes that attended the incidents that occurred on that fateful day.

Rojas: Lue Elizondo, who worked on that Pentagon program that you had referred to earlier had stated that a lot of the pushback in the Department of Defense (DoD), and one of the main reasons they kind of pared it down to a UFO project, as opposed to the other paranormal phenomenon that they were looking at, is that there were a lot of insiders who felt what they were dealing with was demonic. Do you believe that there’s anything angelic or demonic related to the phenomenon going on at the ranch?
Fugal: Good question. I am asked on a daily basis whether I believe that what we are observing is extraterrestrial, inter-dimensional, or spiritual in nature. And my honest answer is “all of the above.” I believe what we are observing and documenting involves all of the above. I think there is a spiritual aspect to what we are encountering at Skinwalker Ranch. There are definitely malevolent and benevolent forces at work and we’ve had negative experiences from time to time that have resulted in people being hospitalized.
Rojas: Yeah. I talked with Travis Taylor about some of those incidents.
Fugal: Yeah. Travis Taylor himself. I mean, Dr. Taylor, he ended up going to the hospital with injuries that were difficult to explain.
Rojas: How did you feel about the results of the first season of the show?
Fugal: Very pleased. In fact, when we commenced filming the team for season one of the investigative series, I gave the disclaimer to the crew and the History Channel that you can’t schedule or conjure up the paranormal or strange activity. It doesn’t work that way. The phenomena witnessed on the ranch is transient in nature and unpredictable. So I was surprised when, during the first day of flying Dr. Taylor out to the ranch for the first time on the helicopter, within minutes, he and our team started seeing things happening that were unusual. And it only got more pronounced as days and weeks passed by.
We conducted a series of experiments over several months, including, rocketry, balloon, instrumented, balloon experiments, ground penetrating radar, resistivity studies, and other research. On every occasion, both our team and third-party experts and consultants involved, experienced unusual activity and events.
Rojas: When it comes to the first season of the show, is there one incident or investigation that stands out to you as being the most compelling or shocking to you?
Fugal: Yeah, the cow dying and upon investigating the body, having a number of unusual events occur. Those included multiple types of smartphones malfunctioning while in the presence of the dead animal, trifield meters going crazy, and then, upon reviewing the cameras, surveillance footage, seeing an unidentified flying object up there, above the animal, just before its death. It all combined to present some of the most compelling evidence of high strangeness on the ranch. I mean, I am often reminded that correlation is not causation. However, you cannot ignore a rapid fire combination of events, including electromagnetic anomalies, physical distress, and what can only be described as UFO activity occurring without giving it some credibility. We immediately brought to the site a veterinarian to study the animal on camera and he concluded that the animal died of stress induced pneumonia. The circumstances surrounding the rapid death of the animal and the correlating strange events continue to baffle the team. In addition, the fact that the animal carcass has remained untouched by any scavenger activity since, underscores how unusual this event.
Rojas: I’ve talked to some of the previous investigators and your investigators. Something they have in common is this thing called the, I think it’s been labeled, the hitchhiker phenomenon, where when you go to the ranch and have an experience, sometimes they’re having unusual experiences after that, in their own homes. Have you experienced that?
Fugal: No, thankfully I have not had that experience, personally. But I do know members of my team and visitors that have had that experience. Strange activity following them home and even terrorizing their family.
Rojas: I’ve even got to talk to a couple of the spouses who are not happy about that, the weirdness that they’ve experienced after these guys would come home.
Fugal: Well, it’s a known fact that numerous participants, including military operatives, refuse to ever set foot on the property again due to the negative experiences that they have had, including phenomena following them home. Even Mr. Bigelow has had experiences that have followed him, resulting in his refusal to ever visit the property ever again.
Rojas: Wow. So, season two. I know Dr. Taylor’s very excited about what they have found and been able to record for season two. Can you tell us a little bit about the amount of compelling stuff that we’ll be seeing in season two of the show?
Fugal: Absolutely. What you will see is a definite progression regarding our efforts and investigation. We take more aggressive measures to study not only what is below, but above the ranch with this new season, and bring to bear our advanced instrumentation in service to learning the secret of Skinwalker Ranch.
Rojas: I guess my last question, because we’re about out of time, is, how do your colleagues feel? How have they reacted to you buying this ranch and participating in this sort of research?
Fugal: The business community has been surprisingly supportive and I have had a number of executives reach out to me privately with their own experiences. I never intended to reveal my identity as owner of the most infamous, scientifically studied paranormal hot spot on the planet. But I elected to go public last year in order to present the fully transparent account of our investigation. And my stewardship, even though the effort at Skywalker ranch is a dramatic departure from what I focus on 95% of the time in my conventional business efforts, it is an inspiring and intriguing part of my life.
Astronomy is one of the oldest disciplines of science. Many prehistoric monuments are aligned with stars and planets, giving us clues as to the importance of ancient forms of astronomy. As a result, astronomers remain one of the leading groups responsible for the serious investigation of the UFO phenomenon.

Astronomer UFO Sightings During the Renaissance

Hundreds of years ago astronomers were observing objects which can still not be definitively identified. Jacques Vallee and Chris Aubeck chronicle many reports of anomalous aerial objects throughout history in their book, Wonders in the Sky: Unexplained Aerial Objects from Antiquity to Modern Times. One of these mysterious observations was by the famous astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini.
In 1672, Cassini spotted a small object close to Venus. At first he only took note, but did not share the discovery. He then saw it again in 1686 and decided to announce it as a possible discovery of a new moon of Venus. His sightings continued over the next few decades but were sporadic. In 1884, a former director for the Royal Observatory in Brussels, Jean-Charles Houzeau, proposed the idea that the object observed by Cassini may be another planet. He also named the object Neith, after an Egyptian Goddess. In 1887, the Belgian Academy of Sciences suggested that Neith was just a group of stars near Venus.
In 1686, a much more mysterious sighting was reported by astronomer Gottfried Kirch, the director of the Berlin Observatory. His sighting took place in Leipzig, Germany on July 9 at approximately 1:20 a.m. Kirch said that he saw an extremely bright fireball with a tail that was a quarter the size of the Moon, hovering in the sky for fifteen minutes. He said that people in towns as far as eleven miles away also reported seeing the object. Kirsh explained that eventually the object darted off to the right and left two “globules” that could only be seen by telescope.
Astronomers and Modern UFO research

UFO sightings by astronomers are often taken more serious than those by the general public, due in part because astronomers are trained to observe and identify astronomical objects and spend a lot of time looking up into Space. Understandably, UFO reports from renowned astronomers helped boost the public’s fascination at the inception of the modern UFO era.
Prior to World War II, UFOs were not as prevalent a topic as they are now. In fact, the term “UFO” was not even coined until the early 1950s during the U.S. Air Force investigation of the phenomenon. Sightings were abundant in the 1950s, and they often made media headlines. It was at this time that Life magazine put together a compelling story that included the accounts of two well-known astronomers. The Life article described the first of these men as “one of the U.S.’s top astronomers.” He wanted to remain anonymous for the magazine story, but it was later discovered that this was Dr. Lincoln LaPaz, a leading scientist in the study of meteors.
In the article, Dr. LaPaz described a sighting that he and his family had on July 10, 1947 at 4:47 p.m. He, his wife, and their two teenage daughters were driving from Clovis, New Mexico to Clines Corners, New Mexico, when they all noticed a strange luminous object that hovered in the sky. Instinctively, Dr. LaPaz began estimating distances in order to make calculations about the object, and his entire family followed suit.
Dr. LaPaz described the object as follows:
[It] showed a sharp and firm regular outline, namely one of a smooth elliptical character much harder and sharper than the edges of the cloudlets . . . The hue of the luminous object was somewhat less white than the light of Jupiter in a dark sky, not aluminum or silver-colored . . . The object clearly exhibited a sort of wobbling motion . . . This wobbling motion served to set off the object as a rigid, if not solid body.

Dr. LaPaz’s family watched the object for thirty seconds before it moved behind a cloud. The object reappeared soon after, but they eventually lost sight of it as it moved behind the clouds again. Dr. LaPaz said, “This remarkably sudden ascent thoroughly convinced me that we were dealing with an absolutely novel airborne device.”

Dr. LaPaz estimated that the object was 20 to 30 miles away and that it was a solid elliptical object approximately 165 to 245 feet long and 65 to 100 feet from top to bottom. He also estimated that it moved at between 120 and 180 mph horizontally and 600 to 900 mph vertically. His family agreed with his calculations. He did not believe that the object was of an astronomical nature, an illusion, a rocket, or a missile.
Later in the article, Dr. LaPaz commented on the mysterious nature of hundreds of green fireballs seen throughout the Southwest, mostly in New Mexico, in the late 1940s and early 1950s. One green fireball incident referred to a sighting of a large fireball seen by over a hundred-fifty people in Arizona in November 1951.
The sightings of green fireballs became so frequent that the U.S. Air Force established Project Twinkle in order to investigate them. Dr. LaPaz was one of the experts that investigated the phenomenon, and he felt that whatever was being seen were not meteorites.
The Life article explained:
[Dr. LaPaz] points out that normal fireballs do not appear green, they fall in the trajectory forced on them by gravity, are generally noisy as a freight train, and leave meteorites where they hit. The green New Mexican species does none of these things. Neither do the green fireballs appear to be electrostatic phenomena—they move too regularly and too fast.
The second sighting by an astronomer covered in the Life article was that of Clyde Tombaugh, the man who discovered Pluto. At around 11:00 p.m., while sitting in his backyard in Las Cruces, New Mexico, with his wife and mother-in-law, they all saw an object dart across the night sky. They agreed it appeared to be oval shaped and had a blue-green glow. Tombaugh said it “seemed to trail off at the rear into a shapeless luminescence.” Tombaugh alleged that he also saw what appeared to be half a dozen windows on the front and the side of the craft.
Project Blue Book Report on UFOs and Astronomers
The Life article popularized the UFO phenomenon at the time and exhibited the highly credible nature of some of the witnesses. Its effect on the U.S. Air Force’s official UFO investigation, Project Blue Book, was evident in a report put together by their consulting astronomer, Dr. J. Allen Hynek. The report referenced the Life article and may have even inspired it altogether.

Hynek is often considered the father of modern UFO research. He was a professor of astronomy at Ohio State University when he began consulting for the air force on identifying UFOs. At the time he began working with the air force he said he thought the topic of UFOs was just a fad and referred to it as “utterly ridiculous.” However, his opinions eventually changed, and he began to take the topic very seriously.
Hynek is infamous for trying to explain away a famous rash of UFO sightings in Michigan in 1966 as an effect of swamp gas. However, he is more fondly remembered for coming up with the close encounters classification system for UFO reports.
In 1952, Hynek began to surmise that there was more to the UFO phenomenon than he had previously thought. In August, he submitted a report to the air force titled, “Special Report on Conferences with Astronomers on Unidentified Aerial Objects.” Hynek had decided it would be valuable to get the opinions of astronomers on UFOs and assist in the air force’s investigation into UFOs. In order to get the astronomers’ true opinions, Hynek did not tell them he was involved with the air force. He told them he was just a traveling astronomer visiting observatories to talk about scientific issues. He spoke to forty astronomers at various observatories.

For the most part, Hynek kept the names of the astronomers anonymous, except for those that had already revealed their names in the Life article or had done so to the media in some other fashion. The opinions among the astronomers he spoke to varied. Some thought the topic was a waste of time; others thought that government secrecy on the issue was “stupid.” One astronomer said that if he had seen something he would not tell anyone unless he could remain anonymous and he knew the information was going to a group of scientists for serious research.
Among those who shared their UFO sightings, one had said that he and another astronomer had sighted a group of five “ball-bearing-like” objects moving rapidly during the day. Two years later, he saw a singular similar object. Another astronomer reported that he had seen a light zoom across his field of view that went too fast to be a plane and too slow to be a meteorite. This astronomer pointed out that it is important that scientists do not “fall into the error of believing we understand all physical phenomena.”

Tombaugh and LaPaz were also part of Hynek’s report. Hynek reported that besides the sighting Tombaugh reported to Life, he also shared another sighting that took place at White Sands Proving Grounds just outside of Las Cruces. Tombaugh said that while he was looking through his telescope he saw a luminous object traveling from the “zenith to the southern horizon in about three seconds.”
Tombaugh also offered up the use of his telescope at White Sands to help the U.S. Air Force investigate UFOs. He told Hynek that he would just have to ask the general in charge, but Hynek never divulged whether that request was made.
Hynek wrote that he also asked the astronomers about LaPaz’s findings in regards to the green fireballs seen in the Southwest. Many thought the objects were most likely natural objects, but Hynek said questioning revealed that many of them had little knowledge of the details of the sightings. Hynek agreed with LaPaz that given the descriptions and frequency, the green fireball phenomenon did not exhibit characteristics of astronomical objects.
In conclusion, Hynek found that of the forty astronomers he interviewed, five had reported sightings. Hynek noted that this is a higher percentage than the rest of the population. He speculated that this is perhaps because astronomers watch the sky more often, but also noted that astronomers are less likely to misidentify aerial objects.
Hynek observed that the astronomers he spoke to weren’t particularly hostile towards the idea of UFO investigations. He said that when he described the details of the more mysterious reports, they seemed genuinely interested. He felt their “lethargy” toward the subject was mostly due to a lack of good information. Hynek said their biggest fear seemed to be getting branded as questionable scientists as a result of any association with the UFO topic.
Hynek recommended that the U.S. Air Force officially give UFOs the status of a scientific problem and that a group of reputable scientists be allowed to examine sightings. He felt that such an effort would not only lead towards more answers, but also lend dignity to the issue. He continued to push for serious scientific investigation into UFOs.

Three years after the air force closed down official UFO investigations in 1969, he published his first book on UFOs, The UFO Experience: A Scientific Inquiry. In his book, he released his close encounters scale and shared another story on astronomers’ opinions on UFOs. He recounted the story of a reception at which “several hundred” astronomers were in attendance, and where it was reported that there was a UFO being seen outside making strange maneuvers. He said people laughed and made some jokes as usual, but not a single astronomer went outside to investigate. His problem with this was that the lack of investigation didn’t exhibit a true scientific inquisitiveness. He quoted physicist and philosopher Erwin Schrödinger who wrote, “The first requirement of a scientist is that he is curious. He should be capable of being astonished and eager to find out.”
In 1973, Hynek founded the Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS), an organization of scientists and technical experts. In 1980, they conducted a poll (which included eighteen hundred members of various amateur astronomer associations) and found that 24% responded that they had “observed an object which resisted [their] most exhaustive efforts at identification.”
The Sturrock Report
The U.S. Air Force stopped investigating UFOs based in large part on a study by the University of Colorado in Boulder which was issued in 1969. The study concluded that there was no scientific value in the investigation of UFOs. This report has been dubbed the “Condon Report” in reference to the lead scientist of the investigation, Dr. Edward Condon. In 1970, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AAIA) released its own report that was the result of a multi-year study by one of the organization’s subcommittees. The AAIA disagreed with Condon stating, “[we] did not find a basis in the report for his prediction that nothing of scientific value will come of further studies.” In fact, they suggested further study was warranted.

In his book, The UFO Enigma: A New Review of the Physical Evidence, Dr. Peter Sturrock, a professor of applied physics at Stanford University, noted that the AAIA report made him wonder if perhaps scientists would be more interested in reports by other scientists. He conducted a small survey amongst the members of the San Francisco chapter of the AAIA, and the results were published in their monthly journal in 1974. Of the twelve hundred members responding, 5% said they had UFO sightings.
Encouraged by the results, Dr. Sturrock sought to perform a larger survey and was given permission by the American Astronomical Society (AAS) to poll their membership. Dr. Sturrock wrote that he was pleased to receive a 52% response rate, with only a few rude remarks. In fact, the responses were overwhelmingly supportive. Similarly to his previous study, 5% of AAS members admitted having unexplainable sightings. However, Dr. Sturrock was even more satisfied with the results of this study because they indicated that there was significant interest among astronomers in continued research into the UFO phenomenon. Sturrock summarized: “Each respondent was asked to state his opinion on whether the UFO problem deserves scientific study: 23% replied ‘certainly,’ 30% ‘probably,’ 27% ‘possibly,’ 17% ‘probably not,’ and 3% ‘certainly not,’ which represents a positive attitude among 53% of the respondents, as against a negative attitude among 20%.”
The high number of positive responses surprised Sturrock, as he was expecting the opposite. He had also asked how the AAS members would like to receive information on this subject, and the response was overwhelmingly through scientific journals. However, Dr. Sturrock and his colleagues always had problems getting their papers regarding UFOs printed in mainstream journals. This contradiction prompted Sturrock to help start a new organization called the Society for Scientific Exploration (SSE), which publishes a peer-reviewed journal. Of the dozen or so professors that helped found the SSE, seven were astronomers. The SSE is still going strong with a large membership of doctorates. The organization’s website defines it as “a professional organization of scientists and scholars who study unusual and unexplained phenomena. Subjects often cross mainstream boundaries, such as consciousness, unidentified aerial phenomena, and alternative medicine, yet often have profound implications for human knowledge and technology.”
Astronomers and UFOs Today
Interest in the UFO phenomenon hasn’t been a passing fad, and astronomers continue to show interest in UFO research today. In 2011, Irish astronomer Eamonn Ansbro made news when he claimed that he was tracking UFOs. Ansbro said that he is convinced that what he is tracking are extraterrestrial spacecraft. He has even given lectures on the topic to the French government, and his studies have been published by the European Space Agency. He has named his project the Optical Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (OSETI).
He told his local paper, the Roscommon Herald, “We haven’t proven our discovery to the scientific community yet and don’t have the resources but we can show that extraterrestrial space craft are on specific orbital tracks around the earth.”
Interest in the phenomenon also continues in other parts of the world. Astronomers at Canada’s David Dunlop Observatory in Richmond Hill, Ontario, have been holding lectures on UFOs. The lecturers include astronomers Dr. Ian Shelton and Dr. Tuba Koktay, a husband and wife team, who both worked at the observatory in the past. Dr. Koktay is now a researcher, and Dr. Shelton teaches astronomy at the University of Toronto. Shelton told www.yorkregion.com, “We try to be open-mined and honest, we don’t just dismiss, because we [scientists] don’t know everything.”

Closer to home, Dr. Derrick Pitts, the chief astronomer and planetarium director for the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia and a nationally renowned astronomer, recently told Lee Speigel of the Huffington Post that he was supportive of serious research on the nature of the UFO phenomenon.
I can speculate about what many astronomers would say if you ask them that question. Many of them would say, “I haven’t seen anything, so I can’t say that they exist. I can’t say that this five percent are alien spacecraft.” But if you ask them in the same breath, “Would you be willing to engage in a research project to figure out what these things are,” I don’t know what that answer would be. I’d say, yeah, let’s find out, let’s take a look at it, because here we have a phenomenon that causes a tremendous amount of interest. Why not try to understand what it is?

The notion that astronomers are not interested in UFOs is false. Hynek, the U.S. Air Force’s own astronomer, who eventually became a pioneer in civilian UFO research, probably had it right when he observed that often scientists are just not informed of the important details. Even Dr. Pitts said his interests were piqued when he read the credible and mysterious UFO cases presented in Leslie Kean’s book, UFOs: Generals, Pilots, and Government Officials Go on the Record.
Historically, astronomers were the leading force behind investigating and reporting on the UFO phenomenon, and they continue to be the driving force into the research into the UFO phenomenon. Their interest adds credibility to the field and demonstrates that there is at least a sliver of interest in UFOs in mainstream science.

ASTROBIOLOGIST DAVID GRINSPOON HAD BEEN CONDITIONED FOR REJECTION.
He’s submitted Venus mission proposal after Venus mission proposal to NASA for years on end, each landing with a thud. So when he heard the news that his mission DAVINCI+ got selected by NASA on Wednesday, Grinspoon was in disbelief.
“I did a lot of screaming and jumping up and down,” Grinspoon tells Inverse. “I scared my dog.”
On Wednesday, NASA selected both DAVINCI+ and another Venus mission, VERITAS, to study the planet’s atmosphere and geological history. It will mark a return to Venus after decades away.
By returning to Venus, it could answer questions both intriguing, like if Venus ever had the right conditions for life, and existential, like if Venus is a vision of our future.
WHY ARE WE GOING TO VENUS NOW?
NASA sent several missions to Venus in the 1960s and 1970s, but the last one, Magellan, arrived at Venus in 1989 and shut down in 1994. Since then, the agency hasn’t launched a dedicated mission, instead putting a laser focus on Mars.
Part of this is due to Venus’ unusual nature, where temperatures around 900 degrees Fahrenheit have felled landers within a couple of hours. Thick clouds make orbiters work extra hard to study the surface below.
“There have been a number of reasons why we've been neglecting Venus but hopefully that's all changing,” Grinspoon says.
Mars has proven an important laboratory for understanding the early Solar System and Earth’s origins, but the picture is incomplete without Venus. The neighboring planet shares a lot of similarities with Earth, being about the same size and potentially having a watery past.
That watery past ended in a hellish series of poorly understood climate events that left the planet as the hottest world in our Solar System thanks to a thick atmosphere of carbon dioxide. Venus could serve as a real-life lab to study the effects of climate change on planet like Earth.
“We think Venus used to be a lot like Earth,” Grinspoon says. “But something happened to its climate, geology, and its ocean that seems to make it no longer Earth-like and no longer able to support life.”
That's why Venus often serves as an eerie vision of what Earth's future may look like if we don't get greenhouse gas emissions under control.
“Venus is a natural laboratory to study climate change and to sort of push our climate models to the limit,” Grinspoon says.

VENUS’ COMEBACK TOUR
Scientists, as well as Venus enthusiasts, have been calling for a mission to Venus for years.
Planetary scientist Paul Byrne of North Carolina State University was hoping that NASA would select one mission to Venus, and was beyond ecstatic to find out that the space agency selected two missions instead.
“It hasn’t sunk in yet,” Byrne tells Inverse. “It gives us a very clear path forward in terms of how we're going to explore and understand Venus in the coming decades.”
The two missions were selected from a batch of four possible missions selected by NASA’s Discovery Program in 2020, and are expected to launch between 2028 and 2030.
The missions aim to understand how the planet formed and evolved over time, and if it ever had an ocean.
The DAVINCI+ mission, which stands for Deep Atmosphere Venus Investigation of Noble gases, Chemistry, and Imaging Plus, will drop a spherical probe into the Venus’ atmosphere to measure the chemical makeup of each layer. It will also have an orbiter component that will capture ultraviolet and infrared images of Venus looking for signatures of present-day volcanism over the course of a Venusian year (225 Earth days).
“I'm looking forward to the high-resolution images of the surface of Venus. They will reveal features that we didn't even think to look at,” Byrne says. “It's going to revolutionize what we think Venus looks like.”
The second mission VERITAS, which stands for Venus Emissivity, Radio Science, InSAR, Topography, and Spectroscopy, will map the geological features of Venus.
The spacecraft will create 3D topographic maps of the planet’s surface and measure its gravitational pull. The purpose of understanding Venus’ geological history is to determine why the planet, which started off very similar to Earth, developed in a much different way over time.

ARE WE SEARCHING FOR LIFE ON VENUS?
In September 2020, a potentially groundbreaking discovery on Venus claimed to provide evidence for potential life being harbored in Venus’ clouds.
A group of scientists detected traces of phosphine gas in Venus' atmosphere. Phosphine is considered a biosignature gas on Earth, meaning that it is typically produced by a living organism.
But the results were met with skepticism, with some arguing that the signal wasn’t produced by phosphine and that it is unlikely produced by microbes that live in the clouds of Venus. DAVINCI+ could help researchers figure out whether the phosphine detected there was real or an illusion.
However, Grinspoon doesn’t think the phosphine debate played into the Venus mission selection.
“I actually don't think that was a huge factor. It's true that there was a story in the media recently and it gave us some visibility,” Grinspoon says. “The good arguments for these missions to Venus was never dependent on the discovery of phosphine.”
The two missions will complement each other, helping scientists put together parts of Venus’ past in order to better understand its future, and possibly the future of Earth.
“Venus is long overdue,” Grinspoon says. “I’m excited to get to work and make it happen.”

In 1953, the alien spacecraft known as EBE 3 crashed on Earth . Thanks to its technology, the United States Air Force has built advanced spacecraft.

He also mentioned that his father, in the 1950s, was involved in different programs to develop antigravity technology . Technology that remains secret.
The most surprising thing is that many military and weight officials have confirmed many of these statements. Among the most prominent are Phil Corso, David Wilcock , Glen Steckling , among others.
Alien research, reverse engineering, and interaction with developed civilizations from other worlds is nothing new. It is not the first time that officials have declared similar things, sometimes, even costing him his freedom.
Should UAP be changed from Unidentified Aerial Phenomena to Unidentified ‘Aquatic’ Phenomena? Or should underwater UFOs and their bases get their own name, abbreviation, and task force? UFO expert Gary Heseltine might support the latter. He’s the vice president of the new International Coalition for Extraterrestrial Research (ICER) – a group of UFO researchers and scientist from 27 countries whose mission is “Preparing for Contact” – and he believes that contact preparation should involve wetsuits and submarines.
“UFOs are often seen coming in and out of water so suspect that in our deepest oceans and trenches we may well have alien bases. That sounds crazy but if you think about it we only know 5 per cent of ocean, we know more about the surface of the moon or Mars than our own oceans – so that would seem to me why UFOs are seen regularly coming in and out of water.”
Good point, although Heseltine’s most famous investigation involved the non-water UFO event at Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk, in 1980. Heseltine has the credentials for his position at ICER — he created the Police Reporting UFO Sightings (PRUFOS) database, and founded or worked for a number of leading UFO publications. That lifetime of UFO research revealed to Heseltine the missing link between aliens, underwater bases and recent military UFO encounters – nuclear power. As he explains in a recent interview with The Sun:
“There is a massive correlation between UFOs being seen near nuclear facilities, whether it’s nuclear aircraft carriers, nuclear submarines, nuclear weapon storage areas, power plants. This would seem to indicate that it’s as if they’re saying ‘we don’t like nuclear weapons’ so they show up. Maybe they realize we could destroy this beautiful planet. If you think about it if there was World War III and we made toxic all the water then that would affect their habitat. That’s why I think there’s correlation with water – they have bases and we only know 5% of the ocean.”
Heseltine points to the 70-year history of UFO sightings dating back to the time of the Roswell incident as evidence that aliens have “been here all that time, they’re not a threat” and the only reason for the recent uptick in encounters is our own better equipment. However, he believes that “everything is pointing to ET or non-humans,” thus ICER was formed to “start preparing people for a massive psychological change” – one he predicts will happen soon … and from the water rather than the air.
“ICER, a not-for-profit organization, is comprised of scientists, academics and leading UFO/UAP researchers from 27 countries on 5 continents who are unanimous in their recognition that we are not alone in the cosmos.
Based on more than 75 years of research, ICER acknowledges that the UFO/UAP phenomenon is real; it acts with intelligence and is likely to be extraterrestrial/non-human in origin.”
The members list of ICER is a Who’s Who of international UFO researchers. President Dr. Roberto Pinotti is the founder of Italy’s Centro Ufologico Nazionale, former editor of its UFO Magazine, and has organized more than 100 national and international UFO conferences. U.S. representative Donald R. Schmitt is a co-founder of the International UFO Museum and Research Center in Roswell, New Mexico, and former co-director of the J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies in Chicago. Professor Lachezar Filipov of Bulgaria is a Space Astrophysicist and astronaut trainer. Dr Eamonn Ansbro of the Republic of Ireland is an astronomer. Gary Heseltine is certainly correct about the many UFO sightings around nuclear facilities – which many believe are aliens monitoring to make sure we don’t destroy ourselves and the planet. There have been instances of UFO sightings at nuclear missile sites prior to their mysterious shutdowns. The fact that the number of nuclear-powered ships and submarines is rising, and there is increased talk of using nuclear power in spaceships certainly can create a plausible link to the recent sightings around them. Finally, the admission by the military that many of the UFOs seen by Navy personnel are transmedium – videos seem to show them traveling both over and under the water – lends credence to the idea that they came from underwater bases rather than outer space … at least for the recent encounters.
Does it all add up to Unidentified Aquatic Phenomena and Aqua-Terrestrials? Extra-Aquatics? We’ll keep an eye on ICER to find out.
One of the reasons why we don’t always see UFOs is because they’re barely visible, and particularly so when they are flying high in the skies above .There’s another reason for why we sometimes fail to see UFOs. It’s because they are so small. That said, let’s have a look at some UFOs of the small kind. Every now and then a story will surface that is so bizarre, yet also intriguing, that it is almost impossible to categorize. Such a story comes from Janice Bakewell, a woman who encountered a small UFO – as in extremely small – in Marlborough, Wiltshire, England in 1977. Janice was walking through nearby woods with her dog early one morning when she heard a loud buzzing noise that quickly filled her ears – and clearly those of her dog, too. Puzzled, she looked around, but it was all to no avail – at least, for around two minutes. Then, everything became amazingly clear. As if out of nowhere, a small flying saucer appeared before her, hovering at a height of around four feet off the ground, in a small clearing in the trees.
It was circular in shape, silver in color, and had a red band around its middle. And, it was barely four-feet across. She watched, astonished, as the diminutive craft settled to the ground – in decidedly wobbly fashion – and a small door opened. Janice still recalls holding her breath, wondering what might happen next. She soon found out. Out of the door flew three, three-to-four-inches long small humanoid figures: clearly female and glowing brightly, they fluttered around Janice for a minute or two, dressed in silvery mini-skirts! At one point the tiny trio landed on Janice’s right arm, smiled, then flew back into the craft, which shot away into the skies, never to be seen again. Such totally rogue cases are so often dismissed by Ufology; yet they are weirdly engaging and not at all rare. Now, let’s move onto another strange saga.
Rob Freeman is someone who, on January 11, 1999, had a very weird encounter in Staffordshire, England’s Cannock Chase woods; it’s a large area of forest noted for being a magnet for strange activity, including sightings of UFOs, Bigfoot, and a multitude of other, unusual phenomena. Freeman, while taking a long walk in the woods – to burn off the calories ingested over the Christmas period – came across a strange, small ball of metal sitting on a trio of metal legs. The ball was around the size of an average beach-ball, while the legs were about two-feet in length. Somewhat perplexed, Freeman stared at the weird contraption – wondering what on Earth it was. He admitted, however, that its flying saucer-like shape almost immediately had him thinking it was some sort of vehicle – despite its small size. His suspicions were not wrong. In mere seconds after Freeman encountered the curious object, it shot into the sky, and was out of sight in seconds. Despite contacting the local police and also nearby military bases – in an effort to try and determine if the object was something of theirs – Freeman hit a brick wall. For him, at least, the matter was never resolved.
Mavis Allen had a very strange encounter on a particular morning in 1975, in an area of woodland in central England. As Mavis walked her dog through woods near the town of Rugeley, she was amazed to see a circular, black-colored object rolling along the ground in front of her. It was around six feet in circumference and had four protrusions (that Allen referred to as “spikes”) that stuck out from equal points around the middle. Allen stopped in amazement as the object rose slowly and silently, to a height of around fifteen feet and which then shot away at a fast pace. Yet again, a UFO of the hardly big size. There’s no doubt that the cases above stretch credulity. And, yet, I’ve met all three of them. And none of them came across as crazy, as fantasists, or as potential hoaxers. They were just regular people who had close encounters of the extremely tiny kind. Of course, today, things have been made more complicated by the rise in drones – crafts that I suspect have probably been responsible for more than a few reports of small UFOs.
Now and again, I’m asked: how, and under what circumstances, did the saga of the “UFO landing” at Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk, England in December 1980 begin? And how did it all come tumbling out? On the issue of how Ufology learned of the story, there’s no doubt at all that it was the team of Brenda Butler, Dot Street and Jenny Randles that got the ball rolling. They were the authors of the very first book on the mystery, Sky Crash, which was published in 1984. There is also no doubt that without their combined investigations, our knowledge of the incidents would be nowhere compared to where we are today. Possibly, even, without those three persistent investigators the truth behind those incidents would have remained hidden and locked away. Forever? I would not bet against it. That gives you some idea of the depth and determination of Dot, Jenny and Brenda to get the answers. A bit of background for you on how the story began to surface:
Brenda lived not at all far from the forest and had more than a few contacts in the region. Notably, that included friends who were employees of the U.S. military. It wasn’t one hundred percent inevitable that Brenda would hear tales of something strange having taken place just outside the confines of Royal Air Force Woodbridge and very close to Royal Air Force Bentwaters. It was, however, highly likely that such a thing would eventually occur. And as the history books have shown, such a thing did occur. Dot and Brenda were friends and decided to take a deep and careful look at the story. Jenny Randles joined their team soon after, in early 1981. The three were soon hot on the trail of the story – and barely a month after Lieutenant Colonel Halt had put his memo together for the U.K.’s Ministry of Defense (MoD). And, the three never looked back. It was a story that suggested, just maybe, a spacecraft from a faraway world had come down in the woods. In the world of Ufology, this was a development that could not have been envisaged just a short period earlier.
One of the key sources for the story who the three women relied on – and whose unforgettable words galvanized the trio to look ever deeper into the story – was the pseudonymous “Steve Roberts.” Such was the sensitivity surrounding the man and his story, he was careful to mask his real name. A lot of water has gone under the bridge since the very early part of 1981, however. Today, we know so much more. That includes the real name of that prime, early source. Gary Heseltine is a former Royal Air Force Police officer who went on to have a twenty-four-year-long career with the British Transport Police, serving the majority of the time as a detective. Heseltine, who has spent a large amount of time studying what happened in Rendlesham Forest, says: “Surprisingly to this day, many people don’t realize that the mysterious ‘Steve Roberts witness’ has been identified for many years as J. D. Ingles. Ingles was on the base at the time of the incident, a Sergeant in the Reports and Analysis section of the 81st Security Police Squadron.”
It was, to a large degree, the words of their source that caught the attention of Street, Butler and Randles. They did a very good, solid job of pursuing the story. It was soon published. Sky Crash makes for fascinating reading. Shadowy characters, Ministry of Defense chicanery, sinister goings-on in the woods, tales of extraterrestrial visitation, and military figures hiding their real names for fear of what might happen to them, were just the start of things. In the weeks and months that followed, the Ministry of Defense proved to be highly close-mouthed when it came to discussing the December incidents with members of the public and the media. No surprise. They were even more cautious about chatting with an energized team of UFO sleuths who weren’t going to give up. That’s Jenny, Dot and Brenda, of course.
In some ways, the MoD was unable to do very much about it, as wild rumors of the startling events were already seeping out. Eventually matters would develop into a chaotic torrent. To demonstrate how incredibly careful and determined the MoD was to try and keep matters under wraps, it was not until April 13, 1983 that an official admission was made to Jenny Randles that a handful of “lights” had been seen in the vicinity of Rendlesham Forest and that remained “unexplained.” That’s right: two years passed before the rumors of something very strange and non-human having been seen in Rendlesham Forest began to unravel in the world of intelligence and the military. Those who were hiding the truth were now in the dangerous position of losing control of the situation. Almost two months later to the day, a copy of Lieutenant Colonel Halt’s memo was declassified in accordance with the laws of the U.S. Freedom of Information Act. It was provided to a now-deceased American UFO investigator, Robert Todd.
In a June 14, 1983 letter to Todd, Colonel Peter Bent – who, at the time, was the Commander of the 513th Combat Support Group (CSG) – made an amazement statement. He said: “It might interest you to know that the U.S. Air Force had no longer retained a copy of the 13 January 1981 letter written by Lt. Col. Charles I. Halt. The Air Force file copy had been properly disposed of in accordance with Air Force regulations. Fortunately, through diligent inquiry and the gracious consent of Her Majesty’s government, the British Ministry of Defense and the Royal Air Force, the U.S. Air Force was provided with a copy for you.” It wasn’t long at all before Brenda, Dot and Jenny found themselves in a runaround. Curiously, during the course of an interview with MoD spokeswoman Pam Titchmarsh on August 18, 1983, Randles was told that – contrary to the statement made by Colonel Bent – the Ministry of Defense had not supplied the Americans with a copy of Halt’s memorandum. Notably, Titchmarsh was very wary about discussing the case with Randles, who had made a trip down to London with Street and Butler. “I wouldn’t know,” was Titchmarsh’s uneasy and succinct reply when Randles asked her if the MoD’s “operational staff” had built up their own files on the case.
Nevertheless, since a copy of the Halt memo had been released to Robert Todd by U.S. authorities, Titchmarsh was – at the very least – obliged to admit that her department in the MoD (Defense Secretariat 8) did have a copy of Halt’s report on file. Despite that, the Ministry of Defense denied that the events of December 1980 were of any kind of defense significance. And, it wasn’t long before the media was on the trail of the story, thanks to Brenda, Dot and Jenny.
While those in the U.S. anxiously awaiting the intelligence report on UFOs – which will hopefully shed more light on the UFOs buzzing US military ships and pilots which many have speculated are secret advanced hypersonic vehicles from China – Chinese media reveals that the Chinese military doesn’t bother with pilots and radar and is instead using artificial intelligence to track UFOs in its airspace. The South China Morning Post and the Hong Kong News also describe what they say is the only “officially confirmed” UFO sighting in that country, although a quick search can find more. Is the People’s Liberation Front doing more to track UFOs than the Pentagon? Do they already know more?

Some are hard to miss
As with the Pentagon, the People’s Liberation Army has its own term for UFOs — “unidentified air conditions” or UACs. Chen Li from the Air Force Early Warning Academy revealed it in a 2019 report to a conference of senior information technology scientists in Beijing. The PLA’s task force dedicated to UACs uses AI to collect data from multiple sources – both military and media, and no matter how minute it might be – and then painstakingly identify each one, from enemy aircraft to amateur drones to natural occurrences (birds, clouds, etc.) to “other reasons.” Each is then assigned a “threat index” based on behavior, frequency, design, radioactivity, and other data. The article quotes an unnamed radar scientist based in Xian who says the numbers are going up but AI is helping to prove they’re “more likely caused by humans than aliens”.
Well, except for that one in 1998 over an airbase in Cangzhou, Hebei province. News reports at the time described a “short-legged mushroom” with two beams of light shooting down from its underside that easily sped away from two military jets sent to investigate it. While that incident was confirmed, ABC News reported in 2010 on a UFO that shut down Xiaoshan Airport in Hangzhou for an hour and affected 18 flights. Speculation at the time ranged from a camouflaged US bomber to aliens, and authorities claimed there was a military connection but offered no more info. However, ABC notes there had been many sightings in Xinjiang, Hunan, Shandong and Jiangsu provinces prior to this one.

China’s military was also blamed for reports in 2019 when UFO sightings across multiple provinces coincided with two military exercises in the Bohai Sea and Bohai Straits. Photos showed up on the Internet and there were again reports of previous sightings, but nothing more was said by officials. However, 2019 is when Chen Li and the Air Force Early Warning Academy began referring to UFOs as “unidentified air conditions.” Coincidence? The unnamed radar scientist said citizen drones have become more popular in China and US military activities in the South China Sea have become more common. Does the Chinese military really need artificial intelligence to identify those UACs?
Is it just a coincidence that this article from China comes out as the Pentagon report is nigh and the U.S. media devotes increasing attention to UFOs? Will Russia be next?

My husband and I were on our way home and he first observed a fireball maybe a little bigger than a basket ball cross in front of our truck. At that point I literally hung out my window taking picts snd video. What we witnessed was unbelievable and amazing at the same time. Once it crossed the road it stopped and switch directions. It seemed to be following us and stayed maybe 10 ft above the tree line. I tried zooming my camera but the more I zoomed the further away it looked. I’ve never had my camera do that before. My pictures and video look further than what the object really was. My first picture is the orange ball but when you zoom the picture in you can see a lighter color almost like a vortex and the outside you can almost see energy around it. My 2nd picture with the lines and ending pints is NOT what I saw when taking the picture! It was huge like a hexagon shape about the size of a helicopter! There were no wings no propellers there’s was nothing but a huge hexagon surrounded by lights with different shapes inside all connected by lights! It was so bizarre because what I saw is NOT what I got on the picture!! My video isn’t the best (keep in mind I was hanging out of my truck window while my husband was driving) but you can see the light in the corner that follows us until we get to the clearing then it stops. It flashed several times then was gone!! Just disappeared! I do have 1 other witness that saw the fireball less than 5 mins later but he was driving and didn’t have time to get a picture. He was also the next town over. Less than two minutes later my husband and I made it home and I was excited telling my son about what we saw and showing him the picts and video. While telling him his cell phone rang and it was a friend of his yelling in the phone saying he had just saw a UFO! What makes this so odd is his friend was on his way over to hang out with my son when he saw what we had! I placed my pics and video to Facebook and no one else in our area has seen anything except for My husband and I, and a friend of my son that was already on his way to my home! I NEED to understand what we saw and why!!!??

Long Description of Sighting Report
My friend Zach, who lives in Millard Nebraska, called me up saying that he saw a white, star-like dot in the sky at around 2:00 PM. My friend Derek and I went to inspect but we didn’t see anything as it was really bright outside. He took a picture and sent it to me. At around 7:00 pm Derek and I went to look again and we clearly saw the white dot he was talking about. I opened my Star Map on my phone and pointed it at the direction of the object, there were no obvious Star/Planet candidates for the light. Venus and Mars were not visible at that time. I got my brother Chris and his girlfriend Monnie to come look at the object and they could clearly see it as well. I then called my other brother Zakk who was in Bellevue Nebraska to see if he could see it. He did, and he had a set of binoculars but they did not help much. As the Sun set the dot became less white and more red-ish over time, like it was reflecting the color off the sunset. I lied down on the grass to stabilize my viewing of the object and noticed a slight Z-like pattern of motion.
As the sun finished setting the object dimmed until it could not be seen anymore, and the stars eventually came out. The object was gone. It was almost as if there was something reflective floating very high in the atmosphere in roughly the same spot all day. Both Zach and I took pictures and video of the object, He sent me a few of the pictures that he took at 2:00 pm and I have video from around 8:00 pm. I would usually say it’s probably some sort of balloon but since three different people all across the spread-out area saw it, it’s a bit more curious.

Spotted some weird lights in the sky that dimmed on and off ... these are two different clips pieced together of the same lights in the sky, from two vantage points.
Sighting took place on May 29, 2021 at approx 9:30 pm at Bush Lake Park in Bloomington, MN. Lights observed approx 30 mins. No sound, just lights. I actually left before lights completed disappeared so duration of lights in the sky was longer than 30 mins.

NASA's new top administrator is directing the agency's scientists to investigate unidentified flying objects, just a month after taking charge of the agency.
Bill Nelson, the former Florida senator who flew aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia, says there is no evidence yet that extraterrestrials have visited Earth, telling CNN on Thursday: 'I think I would know.'
But, as the Pentagon prepares to release a highly anticipated UFO report that does not rule out an extraterrestrial origin for high-profile military sightings, Nelson agrees that the possibility remains open.
'We don't know if it's extraterrestrial. We don't know if it's an enemy. We don't know if it's an optical phenomenon,' Nelson told CNN of encounters filmed by Navy pilots.
'We don't think [it's an optical phenomenon] because of the characteristics that those Navy jet pilots described ... And so the bottom line is, we want to know,' he said.

NASA press secretary Jackie McGuinness told the outlet that Nelson has not established a formal task force to begin investigating UFOs, but did direct researchers to move forward investigating the topic as they see fit.
'This is a really interesting phenomenon and Americans are clearly interested in it [so if] the scientists want to investigate, they should,' said McGuinness.
Meanwhile, Federal Aviation Administration' database of drone-related incident has been revealed to include some unusual incidents.
The majority of the 10,000 incidents from the past 10 years appear to be related to encounters with commercial drones in restricted airspace -- but some suggest advanced capabilities including high-altitude operations.
An analysis of the incident database by The Drive found a curious pattern, with clusters of encounters occurring off the coast of the southeast U.S. and in the southwest.
One report in 2017 cited as many as eight unidentified aircraft operating in sensitive airspace off the East Coast.
It comes as the Pentagon faces a June 25 deadline to release its UFO report to Congress.

Two officials briefed on the report say the U.S. government cannot give a definitive explanation of the 'unidentified aerial phenomena' -- better known as UFOs -- spotted by military pilots.
Investigators have found no evidence the sightings are linked to aliens - but can´t deny a link either.
The report also doesn´t rule out that what pilots have seen may be new technologies developed by other countries. One of the officials said there is no indication the unexplained phenomena are from secret U.S. programs.
The officials were not authorized to discuss the information publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. Findings of the report were first published by The New York Times.
The report examines multiple unexplained sightings from recent years that in some cases have been captured on video of pilots exclaiming about objects flying in front of them.
Congress in December required the Director of National Intelligence to summarize and report on the U.S. government´s knowledge of unidentified aerial phenomena, or UAPs - better known to the public as unidentified flying objects or UFOs.
The effort has included a Defense Department UAP task force established last year. The expected public release of an unclassified version of the report this month will amount to a status report, not the final word, according to one official.
A Pentagon spokeswoman, Sue Gough, declined Friday to comment on news stories about the intelligence report. She said the Pentagon's UAP task force is 'actively working with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence on the report, and DNI will provide the findings to Congress.'

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, when asked about the report, said of the question at first, 'It´s always a little wacky on Fridays.' But she added, 'I will say that we take reports of incursions into our airspace by any aircraft - identified or unidentified - very seriously and investigate each one.'
The Pentagon and Central Intelligence Agency have for decades looked into reports of aircraft or other objects in the sky flying at inexplicable speeds or trajectories.
The U.S. government takes unidentified aerial phenomena seriously given the potential national security risk of an adversary flying novel technology over a military base or another sensitive site, or the prospect of a Russian or Chinese development exceeding current U.S. capabilities. This also is seen by the U.S. military as a security and safety issue, given that in many cases the pilots who reported seeing unexplained aerial phenomena were conducting combat training flights.
The report's lack of firm conclusions will likely disappoint people anticipating the report, given many Americans' long-standing fascination with UFOs and the prospect of aliens having reached humankind. A recent story on CBS' '60 Minutes' further bolstered interest in the government report.
Luis Elizondo, former head of the Pentagon´s Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, said the one official's claim that there was no indicated link to secret U.S. programs would be significant. But he called on the government to be fully transparent.
'I think that our tax dollars paid for information and data involving UFOs,' Elizondo said. 'And I think it is the U.S. government´s obligation to provide those results to the American people.'
But skeptics caution that the videos and reported sightings have plausible Earth-bound explanations. Mick West, an author, investigator and longtime skeptic of UFO sightings, said he supported the military looking into any possible incursion of U.S. airspace, especially by an adversary.
'People are conflating this issue with the idea that these UFOs demonstrate amazing physics and possibly even aliens,' West said. 'The idea that this is some kind of secret warp drive or it´s defying physics as we know it, there really isn´t any good evidence for that.'
The Pentagon last year announced a task force to investigate the issue, and the Navy in recent years created a protocol for its pilots to report any possible sightings. And lawmakers in recent years have pushed for more public disclosure.
'There´s a stigma on Capitol Hill,' Senator Marco Rubio, a Florida Republican, told '60 Minutes' in May.
'I mean, some of my colleagues are very interested in this topic and some kind of, you know, giggle when you bring it up. But I don´t think we can allow the stigma to keep us from having an answer to a very fundamental question.'

Former U.S. Senator Harry Reid recently penned an article demanding that the Senate Intelligence Committee release a report on UFOs lawmakers have commissioned.
Reid, 81, also detailed in his article for The New York Times how the former Senate Majority Leader became 'increasingly interested in UFOs' and said he has 'no problem' if aliens exist.
In December, Sen. Marco Rubio - then-acting head of the Senate Intelligence Committee - called for Pentagon reports into the unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) to be declassified. The Pentagon's Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force has until June to report its findings to Congress.
'I believe that there is information uncovered by the government's covert investigations into unidentified aerial phenomena that can be disclosed to the public without harming our national security,' Reid wrote for The New York Times.
'The American people deserve to know more — and hopefully they will soon, with the release of a comprehensive government report requested by the Senate Intelligence Committee on the military's encounters with UFOs.'
He added: 'Let me be clear: I have never intended to prove that life beyond Earth exists. But if science proves that it does, I have no problem with that. Because the more I learn, the more I realize that there's still so much I don't know.'
In the article, Reid described first becoming interested in unidentified aerial phenomena, what most people refer to as UFOs, in 1996 after being invited to a conference on topic by an investigative reporter for KLAS-TV.
He said his interest in UFOs grew through conversations with former astronaut John Glenn, a fellow senator, but his staff warned him 'stay the hell away' from the topic publicly.
'I politely ignored them. I was inquisitive and, like Senator Glenn, I thought it was an issue that demanded attention, and I was in a position to act,' he said.
Reid, while serving as Senate Majority Leader in 2007, worked to secure $22 million in funding for the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program.
'This clandestine Pentagon operation investigated reports of UFOs and other related phenomena, including UFO encounters involving American military personnel,' he wrote.
Reid noted that program no longer exists but the government continues to study UFOs through the Pentagon's Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon Task Force.
He said that, as a senator, he visited Area 51 and saw classified information that fascinated him.
The top-secret Air Force testing site in southern Nevada has long associated with UFOs and related 'conspiracy theories' in popular culture. Reid noted that its existence wasn't publicly acknowledged by the U.S. Government until 2013.
'What I saw fascinated me, though much of it must remain classified. During one visit I traveled a short distance to the facility that housed the Air Force's secret new stealth fighters,' Reid wrote.
Reid explained that 'there's still a great deal we don't understand' but UFOs and it remains unclear how to explain some of these 'strange sightings' scientifically.
We have some good news and some interesting news about the much-anticipated government intelligence report on UFOs ‘promised’ to be released this month. The good news is, it definitely exists, according to anonymous senior administration officials who told The New York Times that they have been briefed on it. The interesting news is …
“The report determines that a vast majority of more than 120 incidents over the past two decades did not originate from any American military or other advanced U.S. government technology, the officials said.”
“And while a forthcoming unclassified version, expected to be released to Congress by June 25, will present few other firm conclusions, senior officials briefed on the intelligence conceded that the very ambiguity of the findings meant the government could not definitively rule out theories that the phenomena observed by military pilots might be alien spacecraft.”
Julian E. Barnes and Helene Cooper from the “All the UFO News That’s Fit to Print” newspaper reveal that the report looks at over 120 incidents over the past two decades, including many similar to the publicized incidents in 2004 and 2019 involving Navy pilots, ships and personnel that are backed up with radar, photo and video records. Many of the elected officials who have been peppered with questions ahead of the report have said their main concern is airspace security, and the Times reporters said officials who received the briefing admitted it could be experimental technology – possibly hypersonic — most likely from Russia or China. In particular, they looked at the 2004 “Tic Tac” which was estimated to be “about the size of a commercial plane” which one of the pilots, Cmdr. David Fravor, said to The Times “accelerated like nothing I’ve ever seen.”
Unfortunately, that’s all the Times reporters revealed. Inverse interviewed Mark Rodeghier, the scientific director at the Chicago-based Center for UFO Studies, who agreed the report will be inconclusive and will probably focus on mostly military sightings. He listed three of what he believes are the strongest UFO cases, which may not have been reviewed because they’re out of the two-decade range of the report.
On November 2, 1971, a mushroom-shaped craft was reported in Delphos, Kansas. The witness claimed he was temporarily blinded by its light, and his mother took a Polaroid photo allegedly showing the ground still glowing a day after the incident. The soil was analyzed and an organic compound was identified.
On October 18, 1973, a UFO was spotted near Charles Mill Lake near Mansfield, Ohio, by an Army Reserve helicopter pilot and a crew of four enlisted men. The crew claimed the UFO was headed for a collision, then bathed the chopper in a bright green light and took off. The UFO was also reported by witnesses on the ground.
From 1983 to 1986, thousands of people in New York and Connecticut reported seeing a slow-moving, low-flying V-shaped craft that was nicknamed the Westchester Boomerang. Despite all those sightings, no explanation was ever given.
Rodeghier sounds like he’s prepared to be disappointed by the report, but hopes it spurs more witnesses to come forward and more pilots to report unusual sightings.
When it comes to waiting for this report, I’m not saying it’s frustrating … but it’s frustrating.
UFOs may not be coming from space - but rather from beneath the sea amid a string of strange encounters involving US warships, a former cop turned investigator has claimed.

He told The Sun Online recent videos showing encounters between the US Navy and UFOs along with a Pentagon investigation are game changers that pave the way to finally explain the unexplained.
"UFOs are often seen coming in and out of water so suspect that in our deepest oceans and trenches we may well have alien bases," Mr Heseltine said.
"That sounds crazy but if you think about it we only know 5 per cent of ocean, we know more about the surface of the moon or Mars than our own oceans - so that would seem to me why UFOs are seen regularly coming in and out of water."
Mr Heseltine spent six years working with the Royal Air Force police, 24 years with the British Transport Police, and launched a national database for UFO sightings for cops whiles till a serving officer in 2002 - before retiring from the force in 2013 to focus on his research.
US intelligence officials have been ordered to compile a dossier on UFOs for Congress after a flurry of videos filmed by US Navy and Air Force personnel were leaked - and the report is due for release this month.
Strange videos show encounters with objects which appear to defy all conventional understanding of how aircraft move - with the most recent showing 14 UFOS swarming the USS Omaha.
UFOs - now more commonly referred to in scientific and intelligence circles as Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) - have stepped from being fringe conspiracy theories to a genuine security concern.
And with eager UFO enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the US report compiled by the US Congress, ICER was formed to highlight the global implications that these UFOs could be "non-human intelligence".
Mr Heseltine also added there appears to be a correlation between UFO encounters and the world's nuclear capabilities.
He told The Sun Online: "There is a massive correlation between UFOs being seen near nuclear facilities, whether it's nuclear aircraft carriers, nuclear submarines, nuclear weapon storage areas, power plants.
"This would seem to indicate that it's as if they're saying 'we don't like nuclear weapons' so they show up.
"Maybe they realise we could destroy this beautiful planet."

Drawing together the nuclear and underwater theories, Mr Heseltine said: "If you think about it if there was World War 3 and we made toxic all the water then that would affect their habitat.
"That's why I think think there's correlation with water - they have bases and we only know 5% of the ocean."
UAPs have become a hot topic issue as the deadline approaches for the report, with more and more US military footage leaking and pressure mounting on governments to come clean.
And so far there are no definitive public answers as to what appears to be happening in our skies.
However, US officials have started taking the unprecedented step of confirming the authenticity of strange videos filmed by warships and warplanes.
And they have admitted they do not know the origin of the unusual objects as calls grow in the US for widespread disclosure to figure out what - if anything - the world's governments are hiding on UFOs.
Competing theories on the strange videos continue to rage – with some grounded on Earth claiming the videos capture never-before-seen military aircraft or drones, while others claim it shows otherworldly craft possibly piloted by aliens.
Others however are more skeptical and sometimes even dismissive, claiming the bizarre videos may just be camera tricks, natural phenomena or even outright hoaxes.

“We know that ultimately this conversation will lead to confirmation that we’re being engaged with some kinds of intelligence that is likely to be extraterrestrial,” Mr Heseltine told The Sun Online.
“The things that are being described now were seen and being described in the 1940s, 50s, 60s and 70s.
“Nothing has changed all we have is better technical equipment like video on aircraft so we can pick things up easier, that’s why it’s being seen more.
“We are saying you’ve got to start preparing people for a massive psychological change – whether it’s now or six months or a year’s time everything is pointing to ET or non-humans.
“Through awareness programmes we want to prepare people for the shock of this new reality on a global scale because 95 per cent of the world is in ignorance about it.
“Seventy years of past history would say they’ve been here all that time, they’re not a threat."
He explained ICER wants to make sure the public are ready for any potentially bombshell revelations on UFO, saying "we should be preparing the world now".

What is going on with UFOs in the US?
UFOS have stepped from fringe conspiracy theories to a genuine national security debate in the US.
Pentagon officials last year took the unprecedented step to release of trio of remarkable videos which showed US encounters with UFOs.
The debate is still open as to what the phenomena caught on film were – but it made clear to everyone, something is in the skies.
Perhaps the most striking was a video known as the “Tic Tac” – which showed an unidentified object being pursued by fighter planes.
The US also confirmed the existence of the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP) – a Pentagon programme set up to study UFOs before being disbanded in 2017.
However, it was replaced by the UAP Task Force in June 2020 after a vote by the US Senate Intelligence Committee.
Defence chiefs have since confirmed a number of leaked UFO videos and photos which were submitted to the Task Force for investigation.
Why this sudden rush for transparency?
No outside the secretive wings of the US government currently knows for sure.
And as a tacked on addendum to a 5,500 page Covid relief bill passed in December, the the Director of National Intelligence’s office was ordered to compile a report on UFOs within 180 days.
Former intelligence director John Ratcliffe has hinted the report will be a big deal – and we now just over a month away from its release.
US intelligence services officially closed the book on the phenomena in 1969 at the conclusion Project Blue Book - which stated there was nothing to see regarding UFOs.
However, in the last three years there has been an abrupt turnaround as the Pentagon took the unprecedented step of releasing three stunning UFO videos filmed by the US Navy.
He said: "What is true, and I’m actually being serious here, is that there’s footage and records of objects in the skies, that we don’t know exactly what they are, we can’t explain how they moved, their trajectory.
"They did not have an easily explainable pattern. And so, you know I think that people still take seriously trying to investigate and figure out what that is.
Upcoming government report on ‘unexplained aerial phenomena’
Officials told ABC News that an upcoming intelligence report concludes the “unexplained aerial phenomena” witnessed by Navy pilots in recent years are not part of a government program.
American officials investigating the UFO sightings by Navy pilots in recent years have not reached a definitive explanation for the unidentified aerial phenomena, or UAPs, as they've come to be known, three U.S. officials confirmed to ABC News -- adding a new layer of mystery to the interstellar drama ahead of an upcoming report on the matter.
Investigators compiling a report to Congress due later this month are said to have found no evidence to suggest the UAPs are linked to alien spacecraft, nor are they in a position to explain what has been reported by U.S. military pilots in encounters over the years, the three officials said.
One of the officials told ABC News that some of the dozens of incidents involving UAPs were able to be explained, for example as weather balloons or as atmospheric conditions, but other incidents were not able to be explained.
A fourth official said that investigators have also ruled out the possibility that UAPs are related to any secret U.S. military technology, or so-called "black programs."
At the Pentagon, a top spokesman declined to comment on press reports about what was included in the upcoming report.
"I'm not going to get ahead of a report that hasn't been filed to Congress, and I'm certainly not going to speak about intelligence issues here from the podium," said John Kirby, the Pentagon's top spokesman. "I've seen the press reporting, but I'm not going to be able to comment beyond that."

Kirby said the UAPs are taken seriously since safety concerns have been raised by incursions into aerial training areas where some of the incidents were documented. The spokesman also confirmed that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has been briefed on the progress of the report.
Meanwhile, weapons experts are casting doubt on the possibility that the sightings are hypersonic technology belonging to America's foreign adversaries.
These developments further muddle the list of possible explanations for UAP sightings, which have consumed the national conversation in anticipation of a report due later this month from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and a Pentagon task force focused on the issue.
In the absence of answers, experts and former government officials have coalesced around two competing theories for the UAP sightings: they could either be extraterrestrial in nature, or they could be experimental military materiel belonging to Russia or China.
Mick Mulroy, a former deputy assistant secretary of defense and retired CIA officer, said that either way, "these need to be investigated."
"These objects appear to exceed our military capabilities," said Mulroy, now an ABC News contributor. "We need to determine who this is and what capabilities they possess. It is never a good thing to discover you are vastly behind in technology. From a national security perspective, we cannot presume benevolence – whether terrestrial in origin or not."
A New York Times report cited a U.S. official as suggesting that the UAPs could be Russian or Chinese military assets experimenting with hypersonic aircraft or weapons – advanced technology that would allow objects to fly at unfathomable speeds.

In recent years, both China and Russia have "accelerated" their hypersonic research and development programs, according to a report prepared by the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service in April. The race for hypersonic technology is high stakes, and experts fear the Chinese and the Russians are making progress.
"Open-source reporting indicates that both China and Russia have conducted numerous successful tests of hypersonic glide vehicles and likely fielded an operational capability," the report read.
Weapons experts, however, are wary of a hypersonic explanation for the UAP anomalies.
"I would be very skeptical about the hypersonic theory," said Pavel Podvig, a senior researcher specializing in advanced weapons at the United Nations.
Video evidence of the UAPs released by the Pentagon shows Tic Tac-shaped objects flying at superfast speeds and abruptly changing directions. Lt. Ryan Graves, an F/A-18 Super Hornet pilot, told the CBS News program "60 Minutes" last month that he saw the objects "every day for at least a couple of years" off the Atlantic coast.
David Fravor, another naval aviator, described a 2004 encounter he had with one of the Tic Tac-shaped UAPs off the coast of southern California.
"The Tic Tac's still pointing north-south, it goes, click, and just turns abruptly. And starts mirroring me. So as I'm coming down, it starts coming up," Fravor said. "And it's climbing still. And when it gets right in front of me, it just disappears."
Kelley Sayler, the author of the Congressional Research Service report, told ABC News that she is "not aware of any hypersonic weapon or aircraft that behaves in the manner depicted in the videos."

Podvig, the U.N. researcher, echoed that sentiment.
"Any object moving at hypersonic speed would generate a strong infrared signature, which doesn't seem to be visible in images of these UAPs," Podvig explained.
"It would also create a shock wave and sonic boom, which doesn't seem to happen in these images, either. Further, a hypersonic object would not be very maneuverable -- it can change a trajectory somewhat, but cannot do sudden turns, not to mention stops," Podvig said.
With no clear earth-bound explanation for the UAPs -- and with the recent dismissal of some previously accepted alternative theories – so-called ufologists have elevated the prospect that these unexplained sightings reflect extraterrestrial interactions.
Christopher Mellon, a former Pentagon official who has led the charge for further investigation into the UAPs, tweeted on Friday that "It is likely that there is not a single explanation for all of this."
For its part, White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters Friday that the report is "not in the conclusion phase, as I understand."
"I will say that we take reports of encouragement incursions into our airspace by any aircraft identified or unidentified very seriously and investigate each one," she said.
She said President Joe Biden had not been briefed on the upcoming report.

Evidence appears to be mounting that, in fact, we are definitely not alone.
U.S. defence department officials are preparing to present Congress with a bombshell report outlining UFO secrets the government has kept a tight lid on for decades.
And new radar footage has been released of apparent UFOs swarming an American warship off the California coast in 2019.
Filmmaker Jeremy Corbell leaked the latest video, claiming the video was filmed in the combat information centre of the ship on July 15, 2019.
Footage taken aboard the USS Omaha shows an unknown object flying over the ship before it disappeared into the ocean.
Corbell tweeted: “This is corroborative electro-optic data demonstrating a significant UFO event series in a warning area off San Diego.”
In Canada, as well, there has been an increase in UFO sightings. And interest.
In Alberta, authorities received nearly 900,000 calls last year, according to the RCMP.
“There were definitely some themes about unusual UFO sightings and satellites,” Tracy Duval, acting operations manager in Red Deer, Alta., told The Canadian Press.
“We were getting a lot of calls with the SpaceX satellite launches. They’re a very specific pattern in the sky, they’re not hitting the ground, and we can just explain very quickly to people that there are actual satellites in there.”
Lue Elizondo, a former head of the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, filed a complaint against the Pentagon last week.
He claims officials attempted to smear his character when he leaked evidence of UFOs. But he said things are changing — and fast.
“The level of interest is reaching a critical mass,” Elizondo told the New York Post.
“I think (government officials realize that) it would be like putting the cat back in the bag or like putting toothpaste back in the tube. Now that the government has acknowledged the reality of unexplained aerial phenomenon … it’s going to be real hard to backtrack.”
Now, the U.S., the government has reversed its decades-long official stand of ignoring UFOs which have even been given a new acronym: UAPs or unidentified aerial phenomenon.
And the U.S. navy has confirmed that the photos and video taken aboard the Omaha were shot by sailors on the ship. They are not fakes.
“I can confirm that the referenced photos and videos were taken by navy personnel,” Pentagon spokesperson Susan Gough said in a statement to the Black Vault.
The latest unclassified clip shows sailors observing as many as nine UFOs swarming the vessel at what appears to be speeds of around 260 km/h.
Earlier, the Pentagon confirmed that an 18-second video of three UFOs hovering over the USS Russell in July 2019 is also authentic. That, too, was leaked by Corbell.
“Luckily we have footage from the CIC [combat information center] that was obtained by a crew that was specifically called in to film these anomalous events,” Corbell told associate, KLAS-TV Las Vegas reporter George Knapp on Knapp’s paranormal-focused show Mystery Wire.
In addition, Corbell said at one point during the encounter, at least 14 UFOs were seen on radar.
“It supports the hypothesis that these are not just a balloon that is dropping into the water, it’s not something that is easily explained, these are true unidentifieds in mass number,” he said.
During July 2019, there were a series of encounters involving nine American navy ships stationed in the Pacific Ocean, he said.
“The objects are truly of unknown origins,” Knapp said.
“If they are foreign drones, they displayed abilities to exceed our own technologies, anything we know of, that is, and some of them appeared to be transmedium craft: They could fly in the air, they could enter the ocean, travel through water as easy as they travel through air.”
The truth is out there. And now, finally governments appear ready to play ball.

I was searching through some old NASA moon photos when I found something that really caught my interest. A face in the center of the crater. The object is a carved face that closely resembles humans, but its wearing or growing two huge horns from its head. The horns are bent backwards a little bit as if they grew from the being. Also the horns are hollow, indicated from the shadows and openings...since one of the horns is cracked across its middle. The whole face and horns are a structure created to celebrate, commemorate and hold highly the person or species it was created to represent. The structure is hollow and was made to be a shrine or temple of some sort. For its horns to be broken, it must be thousands of years old. I love the bold look of the huge horns...it represents fearlessness, stubbornness and power.
I also found a horse statue not far away. It was laying down on the ground, made of the same white material and its long face, ears, neck back, hind area, and front two folded legs are all easily visible. Horses and horned warriors...almost sounds like vikings. Maybe aliens influenced Vikings here on earth, or perhaps the Vikings influenced the aliens who visited them.

NASA is returning to sizzling Venus, our closest yet perhaps most overlooked neighbor, after decades of exploring other worlds.
The space agency's new administrator, Bill Nelson, announced two new robotic missions to the solar system's hottest planet, during his first major address to employees Wednesday.
"These two sister missions both aim to understand how Venus became an inferno-like world capable of melting lead at the surface," Nelson said.
One mission named DaVinci Plus will analyze the thick, cloudy Venusian atmosphere in an attempt to determine whether the inferno planet ever had an ocean and was possibly habitable. A small craft will plunge through the atmosphere to measure the gases.
It will be the first U.S.-led mission to the Venusian atmosphere since 1978.
The other mission, called Veritas, will seek a geologic history by mapping the rocky planet's surface.
"It is astounding how little we know about Venus," but the new missions will give fresh views of the planet's atmosphere, made up mostly of carbon dioxide, down to the core, NASA scientist Tom Wagner said in a statement. "It will be as if we have rediscovered the planet."
NASA's top science official, Thomas Zurbuchen, calls it "a new decade of Venus." Each mission—launching sometime around 2028 to 2030—will receive $500 million for development under NASA's Discovery program.
The missions beat out two other proposed projects, to Jupiter's moon Io and Neptune's icy moon Triton.
The U.S. and the former Soviet Union sent multiple spacecraft to Venus in the early days of space exploration. NASA's Mariner 2 performed the first successful flyby in 1962, and the Soviets' Venera 7 made the first successful landing in 1970.
In 1989, NASA used a space shuttle to send its Magellan spacecraft into orbit around Venus.
The European Space Agency put a spacecraft around Venus in 2006.

Superreuzen en hyperreuzen zijn de allerzwaarste sterren in het heelal. Wist je dat hyperreuzen net ‘dikke BMW’s’ zijn en hun brandstof in korte tijd opstoken? En dat de grootste hyperreus verder reikt dan de baan van Saturnus? 11 boeiende weetjes over de grootste sterren in het universum.
Deze week overleed astronoom Kees de Jager op 100-jarige leeftijd. Hij werd ook wel de ‘superreus’ onder de astronomen genoemd, omdat De Jager veel betekende voor het onderzoek naar super- en hyperreuzen. In 2017 verscheen een artikel van Kees de Jager over deze bijzondere sterren. “Het is bijna niet voor te stellen: sterren die één miljoen keer helderder zijn dan de zon,” schrijft De Jager. “Maar ze bestaan echt!” Ter nagedachtenis aan De Jager staat Scientias.nl dit weekend in het teken van deze bijzondere sterren.
Wat zijn superreuzen en hyperreuzen? Superreuzen en hyperreuzen zijn de allerzwaarste en allergrootste sterren in het heelal. Het zijn reuzen in vergelijking met onze zon, die een vrij gemiddelde dwergster is. “Hun eigenschappen laten zich alleen in superlatieven beschrijven,” vertelt De Jager in zijn artikel. “Zij werpen een heel eigen licht op de evolutie van de allerzwaarste sterren.”
Enkele reuzensterren op een rij. Van links naar rechts: Cygnus OB2 #12, V382 Carinae, V915 Scorpii, UY Scuti en Stephenson 2-18. Ter vergelijking: de oranje lijn is de baan van Saturnus, de blauwe lijn is de baan van Neptunus.
#1 De grootste hyperreus is Stephenson 2-18
Stephenson 2-18 is 2.150 keer breder dan de zon, wat betekent dat de zon bijna 10 miljard keer in de superreus past. Stel, we plaatsen Stephenson 2-18 in het centrum van het zonnestelsel, dan zou zijn fotosfeer – de diepste laag van de atmosfeer van een ster – verder dan de baan van Saturnus reiken. Stephenson 2-18 maakt onderdeel uit van de Melkweg, maar is 18.900 lichtjaar van de aarde verwijderd en bevindt zich in een cluster met 25 andere superreuzen. De tweede grootste ster is LGGS J004539.99+415404.1 in het Andromedastelsel. Deze ster is 1.980 tot 2.377 keer breder dan de zon. Op de voorlopig derde plaats staat MSX LMC 597 in de Grote Magelhaense Wolk, een satellietstelsel van onze Melkweg. MSX LMC 597 is 1.882 tot 1.953 keer breder dan de zon.

#2 De allereerste sterren in het heelal waren hyperreuzen
Kort na de oerknal was het universum nog donker en warm, maar langzaam koelde het uitdijende heelal af en werden de eerste sterren geboren. In het begin waren er alleen nog hele simpele elementen, zoals waterstof, helium en een beetje lithium. Uit observaties van CR7 (een jong sterrenstelsel in het vroege universum) blijkt dat in wolken zonder zware metalen grote sterren ontstonden die honderden of zelfs duizend keer zwaarder waren dan de zon. Deze populatie-III-sterren leefden heel kort – mogelijk enkele honderdduizenden jaren – maar zijn wel belangrijk geweest voor de ‘evolutie’ van het universum. Deze sterren zetten lichte elementen in korte tijd om in zwaardere elementen, zoals zuurstof, stikstof, koolstof en ijzer. Zonder deze elementen waren wij er niet geweest, want ze zijn heel belangrijk voor het ontstaan van leven.

#3 De bekendste superreus is… Betelgeuze
Betelgeuze is 764 keer breder dan de zon. Stel, we plaatsen Betelgeuze in het centrum van het zonnestelsel, dan zou zelfs Mars opgeslokt worden door de rode superreus. Betelgeuse is de helderste rode superreus vanaf het aardoppervlak en maakt onderdeel uit van het sterrenbeeld Orion. Je kunt de ster dus vrij eenvoudig zien op een heldere winteravond. Sterker nog: als je naar Betelgeuze kijkt, dan heeft de ster een rode kleur ten opzichte van bijvoorbeeld de ster Rigel in hetzelfde sterrenbeeld. Betelgeuze is opvallend goed zichtbaar, omdat de afstand tussen de zon en Betelgeuze relatief klein is: circa 600 lichtjaar. Deze nabije ster staat op het punt van ontploffen, maar daar hoef je niet wakker van te liggen. De afstand is gelukkig groot genoeg en het kan nog miljoenen jaren duren. Het grote voordeel van een nabije reuzenster is dat Betelgeuze vaak in detail wordt bestudeerd door astronomen. Zo begon de helderheid in oktober 2019 plotseling af te nemen, wat mogelijk kwam door een grote uitbarsting op de ster. Ook maakten astronomen in het verleden een prachtige foto van Betelgeuze, waarop te zien is hoe de reuzenster een enorme gasbel de ruimte in blaast.

#4 Hyperreuzen zijn ‘dikke BMW’s’
Hyperreuzen zijn geen zuinige sterren, waardoor ze ook niet oud worden. Onze zon is 4,6 miljard jaar oud en zal waarschijnlijk nog wel vijf miljard jaar schijnen. Hyperreuzen stoken hun brandstof er in een rap tempo doorheen en leven daardoor erg kort, namelijk slechts een paar miljoen jaar. “Hoe meer massa een ster heeft, des te meer nucleaire brandstof een ster heeft en des te sneller de ster deze brandstof verbrandt”, vertelt professor Steve Eikenberry. Juist omdat hyperreuzen relatief kort leven, zijn ze zeer zeldzaam.
#5 Rode superreuzen zijn koeler dan de zon
Het oppervlak van de zon heeft een temperatuur van 6.000 graden Celsius. Rode superreuzen zijn veel koeler en hebben een oppervlaktetemperatuur van circa 3.000 graden Celsius. Dit betekent dat de sterren koeler zijn dan sommige exoplaneten, zoals exoplaneet Kepler-70b. Een mooi voorbeeld is de ster Betelgeuze in Orion. Deze ster is 100.000 keer zo helder als de zon, maar zijn oppervlaktetemperatuur ligt iets boven de 3000 Kelvin, wat neerkomt op ongeveer 2750 graden Celsius.
In dit Hertzsprung-Russelldiagram zijn de verschillende soorten sterren te zien. Van links naar rechts neemt de temperatuur af. De verticale as laat de absolute helderheid van de sterren zien. Er is sprake van een lijn: van heet en lichtsterk (linksboven) naar koel en minder helder. Dit wordt de hoofdreeks genoemd. De meeste sterren in het heelal zijn zogenoemde ‘dwergsterren’ en maken onderdeel uit van de hoofdreeks. Ook onze zon is een dwergster. De grootste sterren (Ia en Ib) wijken af van de hoofdreeks en zijn veel zeldzamer.
#6 Hyperreuzen veranderen aan het eind van hun leven in hypernova’s
Aan het eind van het leven van een ster is er niet genoeg nucleaire brandstof meer en wordt de kern steeds zwaarder doordat zijn eigen massa richting de kern stroomt. Aangezien een ster geen energie meer produceert, kan het object geen tegendruk geven tegen de enorme druk van de zwaartekracht. Uiteindelijk stort de kern van de ster in elkaar en ontstaat er een supernova. In het geval van hyperreuzen worden er zelfs hypernova’s gevormd. Hypernova’s zijn de zwaarst bekende explosies in het heelal (als we de oerknal niet meerekenen). De kracht van een explosie is honderd keer groter dan die van een supernova. Een hypernova schijnt korte tijd veel feller dan een heel sterrenstelsel vol met miljarden sterren.
Stel, een hypernova zou plaatsvinden binnen een afstand van enkele honderden lichtjaren van de zon, dan zou dit mogelijk leiden tot een massa-extinctie op aarde. Röntgenstraling en gammastraling van de hypernova kunnen stikstof en zuurstof in de atmosfeer ioniseren, waardoor er stikstofoxiden ontstaan en leven op aarde drastisch zou veranderen. #7 Superreus Eta Carinae verloor een zon per jaar
Eta Carinae is een indrukwekkende ster op 7.500 lichtjaar van de aarde. De zon is ongeveer 82 keer zo zwaar als de zon, maar was vroeger waarschijnlijk veel massiever. 200 jaar geleden was deze ster net zo helder als Sirius, maar na 1860 nam de helderheid af. Dit kwam door enkele grote explosies. Bij deze ontploffing kwam evenveel energie vrij als bij een supernova-explosie. Hierbij zijn er twee grote gaswolken ontstaan die inmiddels een grootte hebben van 0,7 lichtjaren. De totale massa van deze gaswolken wordt geschat op twaalf tot dertig zonnen. Dit betekent dat Eta Carinae in ongeveer twintig jaar tijd (van 1840 tot 1860) ongeveer één zonsmassa per jaar verloor. Dat is uitzonderlijk veel voor een ster. Astronomen verwachten dat de ster de komende decennia weer een stuk helderder wordt, omdat een stofnevel om de ster langzaam verdwijnt.

#8 De geboorte van een hyperster is… niet ‘hyper’-bijzonder
Je denkt misschien dat een hyperster op een andere manier ontstaat als een eenvoudige ster als de zon, maar dat is niet zo. Alle sterren ontstaan op dezelfde manier. Wolken van gas en stof trekken langzaam samen. Op een bepaald moment stort een deel van zo’n wolk onder zijn eigen gewicht ineen. De kern wordt heter en de wolk begint sneller te draaien. Op een bepaald moment ontstaat er dan een protoster (oftewel een ster-in-spé). Er vindt nog geen kernfusie plaats, maar de protoster geeft al wel hitte af. Pas later, als de druk en temperatuur in het centrum van de protoster ver toeneemt, zal de kernfusie op gang komen. In 2010 vonden wetenschappers een bijzonder zware babyster (IRAS 13481-6124). Deze babyster is twintig keer zo zwaar en vijf keer zo groot als de zon. Net als andere babysterren is ook IRAS 13481-6124 gehuld in een cocon van stof. “Onze waarnemingen tonen aan dat de vorming voor alle sterren op dezelfde manier verloopt, ongeacht de massa,” concludeert onderzoeksleider Stefan Kraus.

#9 Reuzensterren kunnen plotseling verdwijnen
In het Kinman-dwergstelsel was lange tijd een monsterster te zien, maar in 2019 konden wetenschappers de ster niet meer vinden. “Tot onze verrassing kwamen we erachter dat de ster verdwenen was,” zegt onderzoeker Andrew Allan. Het is vreemd dat er geen supernova of hypernova aan vooraf ging. Er zijn twee mogelijke theorieën voor het verdwijnen van de ster. Mogelijk is de lichtsterke blauwe variabele ster door een uitbarsting veranderd in een minder heldere ster, die ook nog eens deels door stof wordt verduisterd. De tweede theorie luidt dat de ster ineengestort is tot een zwart gat, zonder dat daar een supernova-explosie aan voorafging. Dat zou echter wel een ontzettend zeldzame gebeurtenis zijn: voor zover we weten sluiten zware sterren namelijk hun bestaan af met een supernova. “Als dit toch zo is, zou dat de eerste, directe detectie van een monsterster zijn die zijn leven op deze manier afsluit,” aldus Allan.
#10 Rode, gele en blauwe, maar geen groene superreuzen
Reuzensterren zijn er in verschillende smaken. Er zijn rode superreuzen, gele superreuzen en blauwe superreuzen. De kleur van een ster verraadt hoe warm het oppervlak is. De blauwe superreuzen zijn het warmst, gevolgd door gele superreuzen en rode superreuzen. Sterren kunnen veranderen. Zo kan een blauwe superreus in omvang toenemen en uiteindelijk veranderen in een rode superreus. Onze zon is op dit moment een gele dwergster, maar transformeert over miljarden jaren in een rode reus (maar geen rode superreus).
Een bekende blauwe superreus is Rigel op een afstand van circa 800 lichtjaar van de aarde. Deze ster is zeventien keer zwaarder dan de zon, maar geeft 40.000 keer meer licht. De ster geeft zoveel licht, dat ‘nabije’ nevels door Rigel worden verlicht, zoals de Heksenkopnevel op onderstaande foto.

Kijk je met een eclipsbrilletje naar de zon, dan zie je dat de zon een duidelijke rand heeft. Onze moederster is een mooi rond bolletje. Dit geldt niet voor hyperreuzen. Hyperreuzen en superreuzen verliezen veel massa, waardoor de buitenste randen nogal ijl zijn. Hierdoor hebben hyperreuzen geen duidelijke rand, maar een wazige rand. Dit maakt het ook veel lastiger om de grootte van hyperreuzen en superreuzen te bepalen, want het is niet altijd duidelijk waar gas stopt en het vacuüm begint.

Het centrum van ons Melkwegstelsel is een kosmisch web van heet gas en magnetische velden met in het midden: een supermassief zwart gat.
De Amerikaanse ruimtevaartorganisatie heeft een bijzondere panorama uitgebracht van ons galactische centrum. Het centrum van de Melkweg bevindt zich op 26.000 lichtjaar van de aarde. Het kosmische meesterwerk is gemaakt door data te combineren van de Zuid-Afrikaanse MeerKAT radiotelescoop en NASA’s Chandra-röntgenobservatorium.
Het mozaïek is het resultaat van 370 Chandra-waarnemingen van 1999 tot 2019. In totaal gaat het om 1.555 uur en 26 minuten aan observaties, wat neerkomt op ruim 64 dagen.
Sagittarius A*
Precies in het midden van de foto is Sagittarius A* te zien. Dit is een superzwaar zwart gat in het centrum van ons Melkwegstelsel. Dit zwarte gat is de laatste tijd erg actief en varieert regelmatig in helderheid. Dit komt door het materiaal dat in het zwarte gat valt. “Voordat het materiaal er helemaal in verdwijnt wordt het eerst warm en gaat het stralen,” vertelt astrofysicus Rudy Wijnands aan Scientias.nl. “De hoeveelheid straling die we zien is direct gerelateerd aan de hoeveelheid materiaal dat in het zwarte gat valt. Als het zwarte gat helderder wordt, valt er dus meer materie in het zwarte gat.”
Een draad van superheet gas Op de foto is een opvallend lange draad van superheet gas te zien, namelijk G0.17-0.41. Deze draad is twintig lichtjaar lang, maar slechts 1/100ste lichtjaar breed. Zo’n draad ontstaat door botsende magnetische velden. Als magnetische velden op elkaar botsen, raken ze verstrengeld en ontstaan deze draden van superheet gas. Astronomen vermoeden dat deze botsende magnetische velden het gas tussen de sterren – het zogenoemde interstellaire medium – kunnen verhitten. Door deze turbulentie kunnen uiteindelijk weer nieuwe sterren ontstaan.
Clusters, sterren en röntgenbronnen Nabij het centrum is de Quintuplet-cluster te zien. Dit cluster is slechts vier miljoen jaar oud en bevat veel jonge massieve sterren. In dit cluster bevindt zich de Pistoolster: een van de helderste sterren in de Melkweg. Verder zien we diverse andere clusters, zoals de Arches-clusters, vele sterren (de kleine puntjes) en heldere röntgenbronnen (groene cirkels).

Chandra: bijna net zo legendarisch is als Hubble Het Chandra-röntgenobservatorium zweeft inmiddels al meer dan twintig jaar in de ruimte. In deze periode heeft het observatorium veel bijzondere ontdekkingen gedaan. Zo heeft Chandra een jet van het zwarte gat Sagittarius A* gefotografeerd. Dit is een kosmische fontein van hoog-energetische deeltjes. Chandra fotografeerde de stroom afkomstig uit Sagittarius A. Wat blijkt: de jet botst met gas in de nabije omgeving. Tijdens de botsing wordt röntgenstraling en radiostraling geproduceerd, wat door Chandra waargenomen is.
Ook maakte Chandra al eerder een prachtig mozaïek van het centrum van de Melkweg. De foto hieronder is in werkelijkheid 400 bij 900 lichtjaren groot. Rondom het zwarte gat in het centrum van de Melkweg draaien honderden witte dwergen, neutronensterren en stellaire zwarte gaten.

After a months-long investigation, the Pentagon is poised to produce a report addressing sightings of unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) — more commonly known as "unidentified flying objects," or UFOs.
But don't expect a big reveal about secret alien technology and extraterrestrial spaceships. The aim of the report is to establish standards for recording sightings of mysterious objects and to determine if those objects pose a threat to national security.
In 2020, the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee called for an inquiry into UAPs in the Intelligence Authorization Act for the Fiscal Year 2021. According to the document, committee members were concerned that "there is no unified, comprehensive process within the Federal Government for collecting and analyzing intelligence on unidentified aerial phenomena, despite the potential threat."
After the bill was enacted on Dec. 21, 2020, the director of national intelligence and the secretary of defense then had 180 days to produce a report for the committee, "submitted in unclassified form," on the current status of UAP sightings and protocols, Live Science previously reported — and that six-month deadline expires this month.
Florida Sen. Marco Rubio served as the Intelligence Committee's acting chair when the act was drafted and enacted, and he ordered the investigation of UAPs because he saw them as a critical national security issue, Rubio told journalist Bill Whitaker on CBS's "60 Minutes" in May.
"Anything that enters an airspace that's not supposed to be there is a threat," Rubio said. "I want us to take it seriously and have a process to take it seriously. I want us to have a process to analyze the data every time it comes in."
In April 2020, the U.S. Navy released three videos of UFO sightings from 2004 and 2015; the clips were nicknamed "FLIR," "GOFAST" and "GIMBAL," and they showed what appeared to be spacecraft traveling at hypersonic speeds with no visible means of propulsion, Live Science reported. (The three videos had previously been posted online in 2017 and 2018 by the UFO research group To the Stars Academy of Arts and Science.)
"There's footage and records of objects in the skies that we don't know exactly what they are — we can't explain how they moved, their trajectory. They did not have an easily explainable pattern," former president Barack Obama said in May, in an appearance on CBS's "The Late Late Show with James Corden."
So, what might be included in the report? Not everything in the document will be publicly available — while the report will be unclassified, it "may include a classified annex," the Intelligence Committee wrote. The committee requested a detailed analysis of UAP data and intelligence, including information gathered by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) about UFOs.
The committee also requested that the report outline a process for sharing information between agencies, to help identify unfamiliar technologies and to detect patterns in UFO appearances that could imply hostile intentions.
"I want us to have a process to analyze the data every time it comes in. That there be a place where this is cataloged and constantly analyzed, until we get some answers," Rubio said.
"Maybe it has a very simple answer. Maybe it doesn't," Rubio told Whitaker. "We're gonna find out when we get that report."

Jason Suraci had just come back from attending Joshua Warren's Finding Your Magic seminar in Las Vegas. He lives in Colorado near the Space Command Air Force base and nightly sees odd things. Jason sent Joshua Warren and Mobius videos showing that people all over the US had seen tube-like UFOs over the last few days. He was fascinated with one that was seen by the CE5 group: "ECETI Captures a Huge Craft."
Jason sent several other videos seen all over the US. Some were obvious SpaceX and some were much more mysterious. There was also a SpaceX launch that same day adding to the confusion of videos in circulation. Jason wrote both Joshua Warren and Mobius and simply stated he had made up his mind he was going out that night and was going to capture this tube-shaped UFO video footage himself.
A few hours later Jason sent his video and said he got it. Joshua, Mobius, and soon the whole UFO community was doing analysis on the video, looking up satellite tracks, rocket launches, and reviewing all data. The analysis clearly shows stars and other objects dithering through the clouds, but the tube-like UFO simply vanishes and never re-emerges. It is a very strange video and should open up a wide discussion of debate.

Avi Loeb discusses the presence of extraterrestrial life on 'Fox News Primetime'
The government should be stowing away more money to look into the presence of extraterrestrial life, Harvard University professor and astrophysicist Avi Loeb argued Tuesday on "Fox News Primetime."
Loeb explained that the scientific community often ridicules the idea of alien existence. Meanwhile, he pushed for following supposed evidence such as UFO sightings and other interstellar happenings.
"We should be guided by evidence," he said. "In the context of UFOs, we should get more data on this and make it part of the scientific research program that we have."
Instead of Earth inhabitants welcoming complete transparency on the matter, Loeb suggested people would rather remain in their "comfort zone" of ignorance. The scientist then advocated for the normalcy of inspecting all objects in Earth’s orbit, comparing it to "walking on the beach."
"Most of the time you see rocks or seashells that were naturally produced but every now and then you might see a plastic bottle that tells you there is civilization out there," he said.
Loeb also rallied for the rekindling of the Apollo program and pushed for further exploration of other planets and outer space.
"I do think the future of humanity is in space because currently all of our eggs are in one basket here on Earth," he went on. "And there is a risk that a catastrophe will destroy everything that is precious to us, and we do need to think about spreading our eggs in multiple baskets."

A scientific examination of aspects of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena
As blog readers will be aware, I am continuing to examine the vast amount of information in Jacques Vallee’s latest book “Forbidden Science: Volume Four.” Here, in Vallee’s diaries, I found a series of notes about Dan T. Smith. I will quote Vallee: One of the numerous individuals, who have inhabited the UAP landscape over the years, is one Dan T. Smith.

An Internet search provided me with further information about Smith.
“My father was involved with the military in WW11 and was later in the government as an economist. He had no interest in UFOs, but was in contact with some influential people who I discovered later had unusual interests. After doing some graduate work in physics I turned to metaphysics. An extended psychic experience led me to contact MUFON and through them I came into contact with Tom [Ronald Pandolfi-KB] at the CIA in ’91. He was known as the ‘keeper of the weird.’
“…I wanted to find out what take the CIA might have on eschatology [See note below-KB] and possibly provide some input. Discussing the aviary and the UFO community was a good excuse for continuing contact with an intelligence officer who had relevant responsibilities.”
“…I began to network with some folks in the UFO community who were interested in sharing information. Through Tom I was in contact with some other members of the aviary…At one point some of my UFO colleagues persuaded the CIA I/G (Inspector General) to conduct an internal investigation of Tom relative to his unusual methods of collecting information…well there was the fact that he was involved in domestic collections. He was making provocative statements to me about the possible presence of ETs. He spoke freely of his involvement with other members of the aviary. On several occasions we met in ‘nightclubs.’ He had ‘indelicate’ conversations with a female researcher. It was far from clear what was in the line of duty. He was interviewed by an IG officer…”

I needed to look up what the word “eschatology” in a dictionary. There it was defined as “a part of theology concerned with the final events of history, or the ultimate destiny of humanity. This concept is commonly referred to as the “end of the world” or “end times.”
“Smith became interested in what the government knows about paranormal phenomena in the 1980’s. In the early 1990’s he joined Rosemary Ellen Guily, a famous paranormalist, in an investigation of crop circles in Britain.
Shortly after Smith began looking into government complicity in a cover-up of an eschatological phenomenon problem, he was introduced to a CIA analyst named Ron Pandolfi. Smith and Pandolfi have been friends ever since, and Smith often blogs about the latest gossip passed on to him by Pandolfi. Smith has shared numerous communications with Pandolfi and some of his associates, like Dr Kit Green, another former CIA analyst. In 2006, Pandolfi shared Green’s communications with Smith, to facilitate spreading the information to investigators.”
“And then there is Dan T. Smith whose father was Harvard economist Dan Throop Smith, the Treasury Department’s number-one tax advisor during the Eisenhower administration. Researcher Gary Bekkum said of Dan T. Smith: ‘His personal meetings have included former and present representatives of the US government intelligence community and their political associates, like Chris Straub, a former member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.
Researcher Vince Johnston, who had the opportunity to speak with Smith about his ufological views and insider contacts stated: ‘According to Smith, UFOs are primarily a psychological/metaphysical phenomenon which are both preparing us and pressuring us to develop our own PSI abilities. Not that UFOs are a single type of entity; Smith asserts that there are ‘powers and principalities’ at work – presumably supernatural entities such as angels and demons.
Johnson added: ‘[Smith] reported that his governmental sources ‘hinted at’ an eschatological emergency… when I asked why the CIA was interested in eschatology, he replied that the ramifications of the eschaton event represented a serious threat to national security, and thus fell into the purview of the intelligence agencies. Smith also revealed that the eschatological issues he raised related directly to the biblical prophecies of the Book of Revelation.”
Smith claims that “Robert Frosh (former NASA boss, now at GM) ran a secret UFO study at the Johnston Spacecraft Center in the mid-1970’s along with Kit, using microwaves to study their effects on human behavior.” First, it’s “Frosch,” and “Johnson Space Center” (as in LBJ).
What is true is that John Schuessler, longtime MUFON director, worked at the JSC in the 1970s and 80s. He investigated UFOs on his own, not as part of any NASA program. Schuessler was fixated on the Cash-Landrum case (which did not occur until December 1980), in which he was a principal investigator. Schuessler thought this case did involve microwave effects on the witnesses.
Probably Smith was misrepresenting Schuessler’s not-so-secret investigations of supposed ‘microwave effects’ while he was at JSC in the early 1980s as a secret NASA study.
The relationship between the phenomenon and the Eschaton is the focus on my book “Apocalypse Aliena”. Comparing the messages given by “ET” with the ones from the “Virgin Mary” it is evident to see the similarities, reg. the coming “end times”. Clearly also the intelligence community noticed that.

A spherical unidentified flying object (UFO) hovers in midair, moves side to side like a ball in the “Pong” video game and then seems to dive into the ocean, in footage that was recently released online by a filmmaker who produces documentaries about UFOs. On May 14, Jeremy Corbell described the mysterious object on his website, writing that “the US Navy photographed and filmed ‘spherical’ shaped UFOs and advanced transmedium vehicles” — craft that can travel through air and water — in 2019.
Pentagon spokesperson Susan Gough confirmed that U.S. Navy personnel did capture the footage that Corbell posted, The Debrief reported on May 14. Gough told The Debrief in an email that the footage was included in “ongoing examinations” by the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force (UAPTF), a U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence program that investigates reports of unexplained aerial vehicles, according to The Debrief.

Lt. Col. Brown
After returning from WWII an Air Force hero, Lt. Col. Brown worked in the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. He was assigned to work on Project Grudge where he was responsible for investigating UFO’s and came to recognize that on some cases there were no viable conventional explanations.
He later came to believe that Project Bluebook was a deliberate whitewash to the public. Among others, he was privy to reports of cases where four independent radars were tracking objects that were traveling 5000 miles an hour.
The so called scientist experts often claim UFOs are not real, while thousands of pilots an aircrews have spotted UFOS and gun camera film, radar and ground observation indicate they exist. During 1952, a naval exercise occurred and lights entered the carrier traffic pattern. Balls of light appeared to have intelligence that appeared and disappeared. Col. Brown saw five lights in a row that seemed to be windows of light that suddenly disappeared. The lights may have been widows into the interior of the craft ,while the craft itself was invisible or in a different dimension..
He studied the Blue Book Investigation and felt it was a complete cover-up by Dr. Condon’s University of Colorado group.
He also invented a device which reduced vehicle emissions by 40% and increased fuel mileage by 20%, by putting hydrogen water in the air inside an engine “My concept really just opened the door on a whole new field of science. This is not just my judgment but that of at least 3 or 4 PhD’s in physics, chemistry and engineering.” He was subjected to abuse, sabotage, theft, and endless harassment. Apparently the government and others did not want to have his invention used that would have decreased fuel burning by 20% are increased performance by 20 %. I met Col Brown at Dr. Greer’s Disclosure Conference . Dr. Greer’s mission is to initiate peaceful contact and put an end to the disinformation surrounding contact.
Early approval would have added oxygen to the air and reduced carbon dioxide CO2 by 20%. It is basically a water vapor injector into the engine like that used in aircraft to increase power.
Hydrogen Power
The next generation will see the expansion of hydrogen power. It is obvious the new government in decreasing the amount of oil produced in the United States by stopping frocking and oil pipe lines. They are looking at other products.
The BMW Hydrogen 7 is a limited production hydrogen internal combustion engine vehicle built from 2005-2007[1] by German automobile manufacturer BMW. The car is based on BMW’s traditional gasoline-powered BMW 7 Series (E65) line of vehicles, and more specifically the 760Li. It uses the same 6-litre V-12 motor as does the 760i and 760Li; however, it has been modified to also allow for the combustion of hydrogen as well as gasoline, making it a bivalent engine. Unlike many other current hydrogen powered vehicles like those being produced by Hyundai, Honda, General Motors, and Daimler AG – which use fuel cell technology and hydrogen to produce electricity to power the vehicle – the BMW Hydrogen 7 burns the hydrogen in an internal combustion engine.
Electrolysis is a process that splits hydrogen from water using an electric current. Electrolysis is commonly used to demonstrate chemical reactions and hydrogen production in high school science classes. On a large, commercial scale, the process may be referred to as power-to-gas, where power is electricity and hydrogen is gas. Electrolysis itself does not produce any byproducts or emissions other than hydrogen and oxygen. The electricity for electrolysis can come from renewable sources such as hydro, solar, or wind. Expect to hear more about hydrogen power to power ships and other vehicles.
22 Pound Aquarius Engine
“It was always our dream at Aquarius Engines to breathe oxygen into hydrogen technology as the fuel of the future,” said Gal Fridman, Chairman of Aquarius Engines.
“From initial tests it appears that our hydrogen engine, that doesn’t require costly hydrogen fuel-cells, could be the affordable, green and sustainable answer to the challenges faced by global transport and remote energy production,” Fridman continued. “As the world moves away from fossil fuel, our new hydrogen engine could spark the dawning of the age of Aquarius.” Israel-based Aquarius Engines unveiled a new hydrogen engine that it says could do away with the global reliance on hydrogen fuel cells and fossil fuels, the company explained in a press statement via PR Newswire.
The machine, which weighs only 22 lb (10 kg), is a single-piston-linear-engine, that runs exclusively on hydrogen. As it has only 20 components and one moving part, the engine is also much cheaper to produce and maintain than traditional engines.
The electric versus hydrogen debate rages on
Indeed, as with many green initiatives, the financial incentive behind going hydrogen is set to play a big role, and will likely determine whether we eventually drive hydrogen cars or electric at a mass scale.
Really, the main selling point of the new Aquarius Hydrogen Engine, with its one moving part, is the fact that it’s much cheaper than hydrogen fuel cells. Still, it might take more for the current trend to veer away from electric vehicles. Elon Musk was quick to reply, saying “Hydrogen is a staggeringly dumb form of energy storage for cars. Barely worth considering it for a rocket upper stage, which is its most compelling use.”
That’s not to say plenty of companies aren’t exploring hydrogen fuel as a sustainable method for transportation
Multiple sources familiar with the matter tell that while the Pentagon and other agencies probing the matter have reached no clear conclusions on what happened, the fact that such an attack might have taken place so close to the White House is particularly alarming.
Defense officials briefed lawmakers on the Senate and House Armed Services Committees on the matter earlier this month, including on the incident near the White House. That incident, which occurred near the Ellipse, the large oval lawn on the south side of the White House, sickened one National Security Council official, according to multiple current and former US officials and sources familiar with the matter.

The mystery ailment that has afflicted U.S. embassy staff and CIA officers off and on over the last four years in Cuba, China, Russia and other countries appears to have been caused by high-power microwaves, according to a report released by the National Academies. A committee of 19 experts in medicine and other fields concluded that directed, pulsed radiofrequency energy is the “most plausible mechanism” to explain the illness, dubbed Havana syndrome.

Molecular dissociation causes the cement and steel to become aerosols. China, Russia and the US have satellites with Directed Energy weapons. China is thought to have continued using them in starting the fires throughout the U.S.. It is interesting that most of the fires started recently form a line of wildfires as if satellites were starting the fires.
The Chinese Communists have an array of DEWS carried by some of its satellites. The tens of thousands of fires started around the country last year include 8,000 for California and the most ever for Colorado. Towns have been burnt to the ground while the forest around them remains. Untouched.
NASA Says Virtually No Atmosphere on Mars
The obvious problem with this news, of course, is that Mars has virtually no atmosphere according to official NASA figures, which state the Mars atmosphere is 0.6% the pressure of Earth’s atmosphere. Notably, helicopters can’t fly in a near-vacuum, even in the lower Mars gravity (which is 38% of Earth’s gravity, roughly). It appears NASA has kept the Mars atmosphere a secret.
On Monday, April 19, 2021, the Ingenuity helicopter flew attempt the first ever powered, controlled flight on another planet. Apr 19, 2021 · During this first flight, the helicopter climbed to an altitude of 10 feet (3 meters), hovered, and then touched back down on the surface of Mars. Ingenuity is a technology demonstration. The 4-pound (1.8-kilogram) rotorcraft will help determine whether future explorations on Mars could include an aerial perspective.

My body was filled with blood before he could stop the internal bleeding and I was expected to die. Abortion advocates have frequently argued that abortion is necessary to protect women’s mental health, or even beneficial. But a 2011 study published in the British Journal of Psychiatry found that 10 percent of mental health problems among women, including 35 percent of suicidal behaviors, may be attributable to abortion. These findings were based on the combined results of all studies published between 1995 and 2009 that met strict inclusion criteria. The resulting analysis included 877,181 women from six countries.
Women who aborted were 81 percent more likely to experience mental health problems compared to all other control groups, and 55 percent more likely to have problems compared to women who delivered an unplanned or unwanted pregnancy.

Further, a meta-analysis combining the results of eight studies of women who experienced unwanted pregnancies, published in 2013, concluded that “there is no available evidence to suggest that abortion has therapeutic effects in reducing the mental health risks of unwanted or unintended pregnancy.” about 700 women die each year in the United States as a result of normal pregnancy or delivery complications. Suicide rates among women of childbearing age are 11.3 out of 100,000. Post-abortion women have a [suicide] rate of 34.7.or 461 suicides per year. Interestingly enough, women who have given birth have a suicide rate of 5.9 per hundred thousand or 77.

Puerto Rico — On November 10, 2019 around 2 PM we departed San Juan airport for New York City. I had a window seat fling at 35,000 feet, and I was looking down at the Atlantic and spotted several large ships. At around 4pm, I noticed a white sphere hovering over the water. There was whitewater below causing the water below it to churn. It appeared to be quite large and hovering above the water as I tried to film. This is a depiction of sighting.

Kappa ring – on May 26, 2021, I was watching an object in the sky for about 4 minutes whilst in the passenger seat of a car. It looked like two car headlights flying which reminded me of Harry Potter. It was a few kilometers away. The craft started getting closer to us fast floating on air. Another similar craft appeared next to the first craft, but then it stayed in the one spot and the first craft kept coming. Within seconds, the first craft was a 100 meters above us. We stopped at a red light and I filmed its metallic dark flat triangle shape. There were three white then flashing green and red lights one on each tip. The triangular object then flew directly to our right, quite beautiful, and rotated about 180 degrees clockwise. It then shot off into the distance.

Tokyo — A mysterious flying object appears! SID-1® captured a UFO similar to an unidentified flying object announced by the US Department of Defense. SID-1® also recorded the same object! It became clear that many UFOs photographed by SID-1® were recorded that were reminiscent of the white objects of GOFAST. Surprisingly, not only are the shapes of these mysterious flying objects photographed off Tokyo and Florida very similar, but the ratio of the major axis to the minor axis is 1.80 to 1.00, which is exactly the same ratio. The fact that they are in the same capsule shape and have the same ratio of major axis to minor axis is likely to be the same type of similar object. I tried to summarize those videos from the huge record of SID-1®. It has also been analyzed that these images are not birds, aircraft, helicopters, drones, airships, balloons, halation phenomena, natural phenomena, lens ghosts or flares. Herne Bay — on May 16th 2021, I went out into our garden and could see 2 light sources across the southern sky, Denebola and Arcturus using my iPod star AP. There was a short tail of a shooting star to the left of Denebola in the Leo constellation. Within 15 seconds the same light happened again moving in a slight curve, as if a single light was travelling around the circumference of an invisible disk shaped object, once, with 10-30 second gap between it happened 5 more times. I started to video and captured the period between the lights that increased gradually, then it ceased.

It’s often said about science that the more we learn, the less we know. That is certainly true when it comes to fast radio bursts – these millisecond pulses have been difficult to detect, challenging to track, nearly impossible to predict and frustrating to explain. Yet our knowledge of them continues to grow as more are found … but that new knowledge typically negates what we thought we knew. A recent example is FRB 20200120E – a fast radio burst discovered in 2020 and traced to a globular cluster about 11.7 million light-years away, making it the closet known FRB outside of our own galaxy. Yet the good look that its proximity gives us doesn’t reinforce previous theories on fast radio bursts — FRB 20200120E instead defies a big one.
In 2021, astronomers using the Hubble space telescope discovered five fast radio bursts and traced them to the spiral arms of five distant galaxies. These FRBs conformed to the prevailing theory that they come from young magnetars – neutron stars with unusually high magnetic levels. They also fit into the idea that magnetars are generally found in galaxies that are actively creating new stars. In the blink of an FRB, FRB 20200120E may have challenged both of those theories
“Here we conclusively prove that FRB 20200120E is associated with a globular cluster in the M81 galactic system, thereby confirming that it is 40 times closer than any other known extragalactic FRB. Because such globular clusters host old stellar populations, this association challenges FRB models that invoke magnetars formed in a core-collapse supernova as powering FRB emission.”
In a new paper on the preprint server arXiv, astronomers put FRB 20200120E in a globular cluster containing objects billions of years old — some of the most ancient in the observable universe. This is like seeing a pharaoh painted on the wall of an ancient Egyptian tomb watching television – FRB 20200120E doesn’t belong in this picture. And yet … there it is. The more we learn …
If FRB 20200120E isn’t a magnetar created by the death of a young star, the authors of the paper theorize it could have formed when a low-mass white dwarf interacting with another star and gained enough mass to collapse into a neutron star. Or it’s the result of a merger or collision of two white dwarfs. Or … what we know about FRBs themselves is wrong — FRB 20200120E may not have come from a magnetar at all. They propose its source could be a low-mass X-ray binary pairing a white dwarf and a neutron star. Or an even stranger binary pair of a neutron star and an exoplanet. It might even be a growing black hole.
The more we learn about fast radio bursts, the less we know about them. The same could be said about the field of astronomy – what we once thought were just people peering through a telescope and drawing what they see has become a field where being a detective leads to greater success … and more questions.
The field of astronomy – like the universe it explores – is wide open.

Possible UFO flying above the Martian surface caught by Perseverance Rover
On May 28, 2021, the Perseverance mars rover captured two images of the same landscape. Image 1 shows a possible UFO flying above the surface of Mars (Time 11.36.48) but Image 2, captured 10 minutes earlier, shows No UFO (Time 11.26.48).
At first glance, the small light source looks like a camera artifact but after adjusting brightness and contrast, the image shows us the shape of a UFO and the thrust that moves the UFO forward.
The filmmaker, who leaked the footage that shows UFOs harassing a warship off the California coast in 2019, has released new radar footage that allegedly shows the USS Omaha being swarmed by UFOs.
Jeremy Corbell claims the video was recorded on July 15, 2019, in the ship’s combat information center. Earlier this month, he released a video taken aboard the USS Omaha showing a strange spherical UFO over the ship before disappearing into the ocean.
In his latest Tweet, Corbell said, “this is corroborative electro-optic data demonstrating a significant UFO event series in a warning area off San Diego.”
The newly released clip shows sailors aboard the Omaha observing up to nine UFOs swarming the ship at speeds about 160mph.
A sailor is heard saying, “Holy sh–t they’re going fast,” before adding, “Oh, it’s turning around.”
The Pentagon had previously confirmed that the leaked video of three UFOs hovering over the USS Russell in July 2019 disclosed by Corbell is authentic.
Corbell and investigative reporter George Knapp discussed the new clip during Knapp’s paranormal show “Mystery Wire.” On the program, Corbell said they have footage from the combat information center (CIC) from a crew that was specifically assigned to record these strange events.
According to the filmmaker, 14 UFOS could be seen at one point on the Navy radar, but that video was not provided. The Department of Defense is still mum on the latest footage.
The new revelation comes as defense officials are getting ready to present Congress with a report detailing all the government knows about UFOs next month, a mandate attached to the $2.3 trillion COVID-19 bill of President Donald Trump in December.
PENTAGON UFO REPORT: WATCH NEW VIDEO LEAKED AHEAD OF LANDMARK DOSSIER
“WHAT I’M SAYING IS THAT THESE ARE UNIDENTIFIED AND WE HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW, A NEED TO KNOW, AND A DUTY TO FIND OUT.”
ON JULY 15, 2019, UNITED STATES NAVY PERSONNEL FILMED SOMETHING THEY COULDN’T EXPLAIN — OR AT LEAST, THAT IS WHAT A NEW VIDEOPURPORTS TO SHOW.
The video dropped Thursday afternoon on the website of Jeremy Corbell, a filmmaker and UFO enthusiast. In the new footage, we can see what appears to be a radar display with multiple objects moving across the field. At a point in the video, one of the people apparently monitoring the radar exclaims: “holy shit.”
The website describes the new footage thus:
This RADAR data release shows four clips; multiple unknown targets (and one civilian vessel). Some of the unknown targets drop off RADAR in this footage. This happened numerous times throughout the UFO encounter series. At the height of the contacts - there were at least fourteen unknowns observed at one time. The event series reached a crescendo with one of the unknown targets entering the water at 11pm. No wreckage found. None of the unidentified craft were recovered.
This is just the latest escalation in what is fast becoming an all-consuming obsession on the part of the U.S. public. Sarah Scoles, a journalist and author of the UFO culture book They Are Already Here, has been researching UFO incidents for four years but never imagined that things would get as heated as quickly as they have the last few months.

This unverified footage purports to show a UFO encounter with U.S. Navy.
The video comes weeks ahead of one of the most-anticipated events of 2021. Inverse, like Scoles, is keeping an eye on the Pentagon UFO report, which is set to be released in June.
“It's definitely not what I expected when I first started looking into UFOs around 2017,” Scoles tells Inverse. “This was not what I thought the end result would be, or even that public interest would sustain itself for this long.”
The government report on unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) is due to be delivered by June 25. The report has been preceded by a series of surprising statements by the Department of Defense authenticating grainy footage of UAP caught by Navy pilots. This has lead many who have been following the development of this story to wonder: Why are UFOs suddenly the big talk of the government?
Ahead of the release of the UAP report, Inverse breaks down what to expect from it, how much of it will be available to the public, and how it will likely change the narrative around UFOs.
WHY IS THE PENTAGON RELEASING A UFO REPORT?
The catalyst from the reports come from a series of leaked Pentagon videos purporting to show UFOs:
The latest video, leaked on May 27, 2021 by Corbell, appears to show U.S. Navy encountering numerous unidentified objects on radar.
In 2017 Navy videos leaked, stirring up a barrage of rumors online. The footage shows a cluster of odd-looking aircraft executing strange maneuvers. The Navy pilots can be heard saying: “what the f--k is that?”
In April 2020, the Pentagon formally released the three videos of “unidentified aerial phenomenon” — the official term for UFOs — captured by the Navy pilots.
The Pentagon release suggested the videos were legitimate, but it did not say what the crafts were or were believed to be.
In December 2020, the government made the Intelligence Authorization Act law and called for an unclassified report on UAPs to be published in 2021.
The Act was a part of the mammoth appropriations bill that also included financial aid checks for people living with the economic fallout from Covid-19.
The report is due in June. It will be compiled by the Director of National Intelligence and the Secretary of Defense and it should pull together everything the U.S. military knows about the phenomena. It will first be presented to the congressional Intelligence and Armed Services committees.
For people like Corbell, the release of the report is like a dream come true.
“I was always hopeful that if we beat the drum, marched forward and shook things up and kicked down some doors, that we would see a day like this,” Corbell tells Inverse. “I’m an optimist so I had to believe that we would get more confirmation from what our military knows about the UFO presence on planet Earth.”
Corbell has previously shared footage captured by the U.S. Navy off the coast of San Diego in July 2019. The video, which he shared on Twitter, showed a dark, spherical shape disappearing into the water.
A few days later, the Department of Defense confirmed that the video was recorded by military personnel and that it would be reviewed by the Pentagon’s Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force.
Seth Shostak, a senior astronomer at the SETI Institute, says that the government was forced to confirm the legitimacy of the Navy videos because they leaked to the public — but notably, they didn’t confirm much else.
“I don’t think they were planning on releasing these videos,” Shostak tells Inverse. “And in releasing them, they said, ‘well, these videos are definitely videos.’”
WHAT IS GOING TO BE IN THE UFO REPORT?
As far as what is going to be included in the Pentagon’s report, Corbell is not one step ahead of the government this time.
“I don’t have a crystal ball so I can’t predict what will be in it,” Corbell says. “Anything they put out for me is good because it’s saying that the Senate Intelligence Committee is listening to the American public and that this is important to the American public.”
Former Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe said in a high-profile interview with Fox News earlier this year that the report would contain information on “difficult to explain” sightings.
“NOW, COULD THEY BE ALIENS? SURE, THAT OPTION IS DEFINITELY FIRMLY SITTING ON THE TABLE.”
“We are talking about objects that have been seen by Navy or Air Force pilots, or have been picked up by satellite imagery, that frankly engage in actions that are difficult to explain, movements that are hard to replicate, that we don’t have the technology for, or are traveling at speeds that exceed the sound barrier without a sonic boom,” Ratcliffe told Fox News in March.
In addition to the three videos the Pentagon confirmed as real footage in April 2020, the Department of Defense also confirmed the authenticity of several photos and videos of UAPs taken in July 2019.
The footage shows mysterious lights encircling the USS Russell and the USS Omaha at the Naval Base in San Diego — a major point of operations for the U.S. Navy.
A Defense Department spokeswoman confirmed to CNN in April 2021 that the footage of triangle-shaped flying objects was indeed recorded by Navy pilots, but that the Department could not explain what they were.
It’s still not clear whether the report will also include footage that the public has already seen, or if it will release new video footage.
“They’re kind of trying to keep all of this under wraps right now, so I don’t really think we have a sense of what it will contain,” Scoles says. “It would be great if we saw more of their cases because I’ve seen all of the videos and photos that we have about a thousand too many times.”
Meanwhile, Shostak believes that parts of the report will be classified and not available to the public.
“It’s going to be a mix, that’s often the case with these reports,” Shostak says. “Some of it is going to be classified simply because the military doesn’t want to tell you too much about the capabilities of their cameras.”
HOW WILL THE UFO REPORT AFFECT US?
When the Pentagon released the footage of the UAPs, they admitted they cannot explain the maneuvers pulled by the aircraft seen in the videos. So it’s pretty safe to assume that the report will not confirm whether or not the UAPs are in fact alien spaceships or some form of foreign technology.
“I think in the end, it is above all else an unclassified government report and it will read like that,” Scoles says.
But Scoles believes the report may still serve a purpose as it will lay the groundwork for figuring out what to do with the information that has been released and provide a way to systemize information that may be available in the future.

WILL THE UFO REPORT CONFIRM ALIENS?
The short answer is, no. The language adopted by the side of the government has emphasized that they themselves are not sure what these flying objects are.
“You have a transparent, honest response from our military that they don't know what these are,” Corbell says. “So they’re telling the truth.”
Corbell himself remains agnostic as to whether they might be aliens.
“I’m not saying that they’re aliens, I’ve never said that once in my life,” Corbell says. “What I’m saying is that these are unidentified and we have a right to know, a need to know, and a duty to find out from a safety standpoint, from a national security standpoint, as well as for understanding our place in the universe as humanity.”
“Now, could they be aliens?” he adds. “Sure, that option is definitely firmly sitting on the table.”
Although alien enthusiasts have been rejoicing over the government finally confirming the footage of UAPs, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are admitting these are alien spaceships. Instead, the government’s main concern appears to be whether or not this poses some form of threat.
“It will probably be focused on whether UAP presents a national security threat which is a very terrestrial, very grounded concerning,” Scoles says. “And so that I think will tether a lot of people to Earth.”
But in most cases related to alleged UFO sightings, it only takes an incident of an unidentified aerial phenomenon for people to claim that it is the work of an alien civilization and that will most likely happen with the release of this report.
“UFOs have a very good way of sustaining their own history,” Scoles says.
Ellis Silver: “The Earth was colonized, we are the aliens”

The ecologist told Yahoo News that the Earth meets all our needs as a species, but not with the effectiveness of the planet where we possibly come from.
For example, lizards can sunbathe for whole days. The human can only go out for a week or two. But what happens if it is exposed to UV rays for a long time? You could even get a deadly disease like cancer.
Another argument is that of chronic diseases ; Back or muscle problems are a sign that we are from a less serious world .
The difficulty women have in giving birth, which, without the advancement of science, could be fatal . However, no other species native to Earth has that problem.
Problems such as heat stroke are a sign that humanity does not belong to Earth.
Problems not suffered by another species
It is also necessary to point out the 223 extra genes of the human being, which are not present in another creature. And, obviously, there is no “missing link” to complete the human evolutionary chain.
Silver focuses especially on disease; the human is chronically ill. There is no person in the world who is 100% healthy .
The ecologist’s conclusion is that most of our problems as a species are simply because our internal clocks evolved to live 25-hour days .
In fact, there is a scientific study that supports this claim. But the Earth only has 24 hours a day. And this problem has been traced throughout the known evolution of mankind.
There is a possibility that early pre-humans, such as Homo Erectus, may have been interbred with other species. In addition, it is also possible that our origin comes from the Solar System closest to the Sun: Alpha Centauri .
Despite the fact that humanity is far above the development of other species, it has too many problems that are related to the environment. This should already be an indication that something strange is happening.

The results of their experiments confirm that previous predictions of impact synthesis of prebiotic material, where the impact could produce life-capable compounds.
Goldman is sure that this is an important step in understanding the origin of life. In addition, it increases the possibility that life does not originate from Earth and may have been spread throughout the Solar System.
This theory, as Ellis Silver originally put it, has generated great controversy. In fact, the origins of the Earth and the possibility that they came from Mars are still being investigated and debated.

NASA will head to Venus for first time in roughly 30 years
Two spacecraft aim to solve deep mysteries about the nearby planet, including why it resembles a hellish, toxic version of Earth.

NASA had a surprise in store for planetary scientists today: During a “State of NASA” briefing, the agency announced that roiling, toxic Venus will be the target ofthe next two missions in its highly competitive Discovery program.
“These two sister missions, both aimed to understand how Venus became an inferno-like world capable of melting lead at the surface—they will offer the entire science community the chance to investigate a planet we haven’t been to in more than 30 years,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said during the briefing. “We hope these missions will help further our understanding of how Earth evolved and why it’s currently habitable, when other [rocky planets] in our solar system are not.”
One spacecraft, called DAVINCI+, will study the planet’s toxic atmosphere—a thick shroud of carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid clouds. The other, VERITAS, will make detailed maps of the planet’s surface and try to reconstruct its geologic history.

The announcement comes amid surging interest in a U.S.-led mission to Venus, which some planetary scientists have considered “the forgotten planet.” Venus is remarkably similar to Earth in size and mass. And although it is a hellish, inhospitable world today, it may once have been a temperate, ocean-covered planet like our own. Understanding how Venus became such an extremely unfriendly world is crucial for understanding how common truly Earth-like planets might be.
“We have an Earth-size planet next door that is nothing like Earth—why? That’s a pretty important thing to figure out,” says Paul Byrne, a planetary scientist at North Carolina State University. “We have some pretty big questions to answer regarding the formation, characteristics, and evolution of an Earth-size world.”
Double the fun
NASA’s Discovery program supports smaller, less expensive missions than those in its New Frontiers and flagship categories. Launching roughly every 36 months, Discovery missions are typically capped at $450 million, excluding launch vehicle and mission operations costs, while New Frontiers expeditions are capped at $850 million. Flagships—such as the Perseverance and Curiosity Mars rovers—can cost billions.
Currently, NASA is flying two Discovery missions. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, launched in 2009, has spent more than a decade mapping the moon’s surface. The InSight Lander, launched in 2018, is studying the Martian interior.
In 2021, two more missions will launch: Lucy will study multiple asteroids and use them to uncover secrets about the early solar system, while Psyche will visit a giant, extremely metal-rich asteroid of the same name. At the time, some scientists grumbled about two asteroid missions being selected—especially given that they beat out several proposed Venus missions, including VERITAS and DAVINCI+.
A long time coming
Now, those missions will at last have their chance to fly, exposing new truths about the shrouded world next door.
The last U.S. mission to Venus, Magellan, ended in 1994 as the spacecraft executed a programmed plunge through the planet’s atmosphere. Since then, European and Japanese probes have visited Earth’s twisted sister, and scientists have continued to aim Ed telescopes at the intriguing planet.
Venus 101
Named after the ancient Roman goddess of beauty, Venus is known for its exceptional brightness. Find out about the volcanoes that dot Venus's surface, the storms that rage in its atmosphere, and the surprising feature that makes Venus outshine every planet or star in the night sky..
Despite the scrutiny, Venus’s mysteries have only deepened. Among them is growing evidence for ongoing volcanism on the planet’s surface, despite the fact that Venus lacks the type of tectonic activity that fuels Earth’s most extremely volcanic regions. There’s also the controversial detection of phosphine gas in the planet’s atmosphere, which could be a sign of life.
Soon, perhaps by 2030, the Deep Atmosphere Venus Investigation of Noble gases, Chemistry, and Imaging, or DAVINCI+, spacecraft will set sail for Venus. It will then descend through the planet’s atmosphere, which is 90 times denser than Earth’s, collecting samples and relaying data that will help scientists understand how it evolved, and whether the planet ever had oceans.
While DAVINCI+ studies the Venusian shroud, the Venus Emissivity, Radio Science, InSAR, Topography, and Spectroscopy, or VERITAS, spacecraft will be busy mapping the planet’s surface from orbit. Those images, plus detailed information about surface chemistry and topography, will help reconstruct Venus’s geologic history—and perhaps solve the mystery of how it evolved into the hellhole next door.
“My poor dog really thought our house was under attack from the way I was screaming when I found out our mission was selected,” tweeted the Planetary Science Institute’s David Grinspoon, a member of the DAVINCI+ team.
“I’ve been pushing for this for literally my entire career,” he also tweeted. “Last U.S. Venus mission launched in 1989, year I finished grad school. So much to learn about climate, history of Earth-like worlds & life in the universe.”

Robots may be taking away our jobs, but one consolation (perhaps the ONLY consolation) is that they don’t ever seem to look like they’re enjoying it. Then again, how many of you look like you enjoy your job … at least pre-pandemic? Well, some robots have decided to rub our human noses into our job losses by curling that thing underneath THEIR useless noses into the creepiest smile ever. If you’ve been searching for incentive to rise up against our robot overlords, that look may be it.
“The idea for EVA took shape a few years ago, when my students and I began to notice that the robots in our lab were staring back at us through plastic, googly eyes.”
Hod Lipson, James and Sally Scapa Professor of Innovation (Mechanical Engineering) and director of the Creative Machines Lab at Columbia Engineering (Columbia University), explains in a press release how an observation by students who hadn’t yet gotten jobs that they would eventually lose to robots turned into a study called “Smile Like You Mean It: Driving Animatronic Robotic Face with Learned Models” which led to the development of EVA, an autonomous robot with a soft face and AI Learning algorithms it used to mimic the facial expressions of humans around it.
“The greatest challenge in creating EVA was designing a system that was compact enough to fit inside the confines of a human skull while still being functional enough to produce a wide range of facial expressions.”
Undergraduate student Zanwar Faraj led the team in developing artificial cable-and-pulley facial muscles to replace the more than 42 tiny muscles in a human face. That gave the robot the ability to express the six basic emotions of anger, disgust, fear, joy, sadness, and surprise, plus an array of more nuanced feelings. Over the mechanics they stretched a blue skin resembling a member of the popular and much-loved Blue Man Group performance art company. To make the robotic face closer to a human one than the animatronic robots at theme parks, they gave EVA deep learning artificial intelligence to “read” and then mirror the expressions on nearby human faces, and then learn more by watching videos of itself. In that way, EVA obtained a ‘self-image’.
Did it work?
“I was minding my own business one day when EVA suddenly gave me a big, friendly smile. I knew it was purely mechanical, but I found myself reflexively smiling back.”
Hod Lipson was one of the first to come under the control of EVA. He admits that his reflex response to the smiling EVA was one of the goals of the project – he had noticed that grocery stores using restocking robots often decked them out in name badges and clothing to give them a human identity, and decided the next step was to make a robot that could control that identity and its responses itself.
“Our brains seem to respond well to robots that have some kind of recognizable physical presence.”
That’s true … but is it wise? Boyuan Chen, a PhD student who led the software phase of the project, added this:
“Robots are intertwined in our lives in a growing number of ways, so building trust between humans and machines is increasingly important.”
What could possibly go wrong?
What’s the harm in making a robot smile? What’s the first thing a con man does? Or a politician? Or a pusher? A kidnapper? Anyone looking to win your trust before they violate it?
We now have a smiling robot that can make you reflexively smile back. What do you think it’s going to say as it smilingly leads you away and you ask it to tell you where it’s taking you? You’ve seen this movie before.
It seems there is no X-Files division in Australia, so we at Curious Adelaide stepped up.

It's a question many of us have asked ourselves: are we alone in the universe?
From flying saucers to balls of light rocketing through the sky, South Australia has had its fair share of reported UFO encounters.
One avid ABC reader has asked us to delve into the history of the state's major cases, as part of our Curious Adelaide campaign.
So we dusted off some of South Australia's oldest X-Files to find answers.
Nightmare on the Nullarbor

We'll start in the outback, where a traumatised family was allegedly lifted off the ground by aliens.
It was still dark in the early hours of January 20, 1988, when the Knowles family was driving along the remote Nullarbor Plain.
The seemingly mundane trip from Perth to Melbourne quickly turned to terror when they encountered an unidentified flying object that tormented them for 90 minutes.
A large glowing object "like a big ball"chased Faye Knowles and her adult sons Patrick, Wayne and Sean down the highway, before landing on their roof and plucking them into the air.
"It apparently picked the car up off the road, shook it quite violently and forced the car back down on the road with such pressure that one of the tyres was blown," a police spokesman told media at the time.
In a state of shock, Sean Knowles put his foot on the accelerator as his mother screamed but, according to reports, their voices distorted like time was slowing down.

"I wound down the window and I felt this thing on the roof... all of this smoke stuff started coming into the car, the car was covered in black stuff," Faye Knowles told reporters after the incident.
"It was a small light and all of a sudden it became big like this, like a big ball.
"We thought we were dying, then we got out the car and we hid behind a little tree and the bushes and it couldn't find us."
The family eventually made it to Ceduna and reported the bizarre events to police who took the report seriously, given the state of the car, which was dented and had dust over it.
The story made headlines around the world with sceptics and believers alike trying to make sense of what happened on that lonely stretch of road.
Flying saucers and lights in the sky

UFO reports in the state can be traced back to the beginning of the twentieth century but it wasn't until the early Cold War that they started appearing all over the place.
It seems that, in an atmosphere of heightened political tension, people became spooked by strange lights in the sky.
UFO researcher Keith Basterfield said Port Augusta was home to one of the state's first sightings.
"Even in the beginning of the flying saucer era in 1947 when the whole thing took off, we had one of the earliest sightings in Port Augusta," Mr Basterfield said.
"Five metallic objects were seen by three people working at the Commonwealth railways there.
"Even the government astronomer — we had such a person at the time — couldn't explain that sighting."

Reports made the front pages of newspapers of strange objects sighted from Eyre Peninsula to the outskirts of Adelaide.
On January 22, 1954, The Bunyip newspaper reported three people had sighted a flying saucer over Gawler.
"As the object approached at terrific speed they could make out the perfect shape of a saucer — pure white," the report stated.
"It looked no bigger than an ordinary saucer because of its great height."
One case that still stumps Mr Basterfield took place outside the remote community of Kimba on the Eyre Highway on the night of February 4, 1973.

Four people in three separate cars all spotted it in a clearing they passed — an orange rectangle similar to an illuminated door in the scrub, with a strange figure standing inside.
Police were baffled, so Mr Basterfield and his team drove out to investigate.
"We had a look at the site, we took soil samples from the area, we had the samples analysed looking for something unusual there," he said.
"That's not your typical flying metallic saucer but it's a very, very strange set of observations by a group of independent people.
"And we never did get to the bottom of it."

Another strange happening, in South Australia's Flinders Ranges in 2006, was witnessed by scores of people many kilometres apart.
Service station owner John Teague was outside pumping tyres when something plummeted through the sky.
"For some reason I glanced up and I yelled, 'look at that Lloyd', and this thing was hurtling through the air," he said.
"Looked like [it was] about the size of a baseball just flying through the air rapidly."
Mr Teague made such a noise that a group across the street looked up and saw the same thing.
"Then all of a sudden, and this was quite some time later, a huge sonic boom rattled through the air," he said.
"I thought it might have been a meteor going through the air in daylight, I didn't know what it was, maybe space junk coming back.
"But it would have had to be pretty big for space junk for it to be that size way up in the air."
To this day, what it was remains a mystery.
So how common are UFO sightings in South Australia?

South Australia's Astronomical Society's Paul Curnow said it's pretty common.
"The average city person doesn't look at the sky very often and sometimes when they do look up and see something strange, they can't really explain it," Mr Curnow said.
When Curious Adelaide phoned SA Police to check whether it could shed some light on the matter there was a moment of silence, before some laughter.
Senior constable Mick Abbott did however make the following comment:
"If you stay on the line, I'll transfer you to agents Mulder and Scully from our X-Files division."
When the ABC contacted the CSIRO there was a similar reponse.
According to Paul Curnow, it's still common to get several dozen to hundreds of UFO reports each year in South Australia alone.
But what's being reported is changing, he told us, with fewer sightings of flying saucers hovering over the land.
"Probably for every 10 cases you get, nine can be explained in mundane terms," Mr Curnow said.
The majority of cases, unfortunately for those hoping for an encounter with the extra-terrestrial, have a logical explanation.
"Quite often people report a little silver dot in the sky [and it] turned out to be an aircraft," he said.
"A lot of these things like planes, satellites, planets, even searchlights sometimes, can all add to what people are reporting."
So is the truth really out there?
UFO researcher Keith Basterfield was based in Adelaide when the Knowles family incident occurred.
"My first thought was 'here is a very interesting story that we can carry out some hard science on'," he said.
"We've got a vehicle, we've got reported unusual dust on a vehicle, we've got a number of witnesses.
"If we could document all that we'd have a very strong case for saying something unusual occurred."
However, the conclusion he reached was far from the extra-terrestrial encounter portrayed by the media.
The car had been forensically tested with nothing unusual found, and Mr Basterfield had a more ordinary explanation for the bright light.
"We figured it was potentially a mirage caused by a temperature inversion that night," he said.
That kind of mirage can make lights a long way in the distance curve over the Earth's horizon and appear to be much closer than they actually are.
"Although they saw the light approaching them, they never saw the [source of the] light reach them, so it never actually got to them," Mr Basterfield said.
"It disappeared at that point in front of them so we figured a mirage of a track light several kilometres away could explain that."

He also had a simple explanation for the car jumping and vibrating.
"If a tyre explodes under your car going at really high speed you're going to get vibrations, you're going to get brake dust entering the vehicle," Mr Basterfield said.
"It was simply a case of misunderstanding, of seeing a light in the distance, a tyre bursting and those things had built up into a story."
While it seems science offers an explanation for many of the sightings in the state, you'll need to decide for yourself whether it's more tale than truth.
For whatever reasons, some places seem to draw to them more UFO activity than others. These places log in more sightings than other places, often by a fair margin, and it is not easy to ascertain just exactly why that should be. One place that is perhaps little known to the outside world as a UFO hotspot is the wilds of South Australia, consisting of largely of sparsely inhabited arid and semi-arid rangelands, with several low mountain ranges. It is a wild, remote place in many areas, and it is here where the dark rural roads that meander through the outback have long been seemingly plagued by UFOs.
Our earliest report here comes from the files of UFO Research South Australia (UFORSA), in the year 1955, near the town of Tintinara. On April 22 of that year, a young, unnamed man was driving along a dusty rural road at around 7:45 a.m. when he was startled to see something hover across the road in front of him. He would describe it as a “three metre diameter silvery sphere, surrounded by a flange,” with a total diameter of around 10 meters. According to the witness there were no external portholes or markings, the entire thing completely smooth and metallic. The object crossed over the road, hovering about 1 meter above it, after which it circled around and crossed behind the vehicle before taking a parallel course beside it, matching the speed of the astonished man’s car. The mysterious object reportedly followed him for about 25 kilometers before it either lost interest or found something better to do, launching straight up into the sky at phenomenal speeds.
Continuing into the 50s, according to a report in the Adelaide “Advertiser, on March 13, 1959, two men were in a truck near a place called Purnong Landing when they crested a hill and were astounded to see a “dome illuminated by colored lights,” measuring around 10 meters in diameter. They were so in awe of the object that they stopped the truck to watch it. The object eerily hung there in one place, flashing through a pattern of alternating hypnotic sequences of different colored lights, before it without warning went completely dark. The men approached out of curiosity, the thing now just a black, indefinable shape, but it then sped off silently without illuminating again. In that same month, on March 31, witness Barry Neale was driving near Port Elliott when he passed a strange object resting about 100 meters off the road, which he described as 2 meters wide and looking like a “a glowing reddish orange object with a row of portholes.” Neale drove off onto a dirt side road through the trees to try and get closer, but the object then took off at an incredibly high speed.
Moving into the 1960s, there are several notable reports. On May 19, 1963, a 17-year-old local mechanic was driving home near Mount Gambier and noticed a strange metallic object travelling along near the road. As he approached it, the object allegedly flashed him with a blinding light before hovering directly above his vehicle. At this point he could see that it was oval-shaped, about 6 meters long, and with an array of lights as bright as “the arc lights in electric welding.” It apparently followed him for several miles before drifting off into the distance. The very next day there was another report from the same general vicinity, this time given by a witness who says he was followed for 3 miles along a desolate stretch of barren road by a mysterious silent object that was “bright red/white and shaped like a bull-dozer.” The object apparently only flew off when another car appeared coming the opposite direction. The following month, on July 28, 1963, a witness was near a place called Sandy Creek, making his way towards the town of Gawler when he was forced to slam his brakes when he almost collided with a “blood-red colored object extending across the roadway” as he rounded a bend. The object had a concave top and a flat base, the whole of it bathed in that eerie red glow. It then ascended, the color of its light changing to yellow as it did, then turned on its side and flew off, streaming a trail of vapor behind it.
In July of 1967, a witness was driving near Murray Bridge on his way to Karoonda through thick fog when his radio began to go haywire, distorting and morphing until it became an ear-piercing, high pitched whine, causing him to turn it off. Shortly after this, his engine died for no apparent reason and a warning light came on telling him his key was not in the ignition, even though it was. As the car rolled to a stop he noticed a patch of fog suddenly clear to reveal a “large dark shadow” about 120 feet wide and with a greyish-blue glow above it hovering 20 feet above the road. As he looked on in amazement, the hole in the fog suddenly closed again, making it appear as if the enigmatic object had just vanished into thin air. As soon as it was gone, his car jumped back to life and the radio worked normally.
In the 1970s we have first a report of a Mr. Boyce, who on August 8, 1971 was on his way from the town of Wallaroo to Kadina when he was bathed in an orange glow as his car died. He guided the powerless car to the side of the road and got out of the vehicle to see “an oval shape with three to four windows” hovering almost directly over his car and emitting a low buzzing noise. It allegedly hovered there motionless and silent for around 3 minutes before moving off out of sight, his car coming back on when it did.
In February of 1972, a witness named Hunt was driving outside the town of Kimba with a passenger called Finkler, when Hunt saw a “red and orange rectangle of light” hovering nearby about 3 feet over the ground. In this case he could allegedly see the occupant of the craft within the light, which appeared to be a 6-foot-tall humanoid decked out in “a white space suit with a mask over the head and face.” Hunt woke his passenger, who had been sleeping, who also saw it, and they reported it to police. Authorities would then find out that two other independent witnesses had reported seeing the orange light in the same location within a 15-minute period, although no one else reported the alien figure. In February of 1974 there was another sighting of a humanoid being in conjunction with a UFO in the same area, when four people in three separate vehicles saw an orange lighted rectangular object sitting in a clearing off the road. There was also allegedly seen a “two-meter-tall ‘man’ in a white space-suit” hovering within the rectangular light like an insect in amber.
In the 1980s we have the strange case of two young men only known as “Messrs P.” and “J”, who were driving outside of Port Lincoln when they saw an odd bright light in the sky. After that they apparently drove into a “white endless space,” after which they woke up in their car on the dark road several hours later with no memory of what had happened after entering that white landscape. Under hypnosis they would recall fragments of walking into a big room and a tall, humanoid figure, but nothing else could be dredged up from their subconscious. Perhaps the most famous case of all occurred on January 20 of 1988, in the barren badlands of the remote Nullarbor Plain. In the early morning hours, the Knowles family was travelling from Perth to Melbourne when they were aggressively chased by a glowing object “like a big ball” that would reportedly terrorize them for the next 90 minutes. At one point, the object landed right on top of their car to spew smoke into their windows before picking the vehicle clear up into the air. They then felt the car shake violently and noticed that their screams of terror were distorted and slowed down as if they were in some sort of time warp, after which they were dropped so hard back onto the road that one of their tires burst. They ended up running into some brush to hide until the marauding UFO went away. Police would later examine the car to find it scratched and dented, but no radiation or any other evidence of the bizarre encounter could be found.
These are just some of the many other UFO reports from the remote and desolate roads that meander through South Australia, and indeed the region in general has gathered about itself a reputation as a UFO mecca. Why should this be? What is it about this place that should attract so many such stories? Is it something about the land itself? There have been theories that this place lies upon some sort of earth energy line, or that it possesses certain geographical features that may attract such strange forces, so could that be it? Why are they so keen to patrol the roadways here and terrorize vehicles? No one really knows, and South Australia remains a pretty active and strange UFO hotspot, where it might be best to keep your eyes to the sky the next time you are driving through.
Earthquakes have a very flexible time period that they can last, such as a few seconds, several minutes, days, weeks, or months. But based on new analysis of an ancient coral, the longest lasting earthquake in Earth’s history dragged on for a whopping 32 years.
Researchers in Singapore (specifically at the Nanyang Technological University) were able to confirm the 32-year-long earthquake by studying odd and ancient coral structures called “microatolls” off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. Microatolls grow at a very slow rate which provides experts with important information regarding changes in land elevation and sea levels throughout history.
The experts determined that between the years 1738 and 1829, the baseline readings were normal based on the fact that the microatolls were sinking between 1 and 2 millimeters each year. However, they noticed a significant change around the year 1829 when they began sinking at an astonishing rate of 10 millimeters annually. They continued sinking at the faster rate until around the year 1861.
With the rapid sinking of the microatolls, which is connected to the movement of tectonic plates, this revealed that there was a slow earthquake that lasted 32 years – the longest in all of Earth’s history. (A picture of the microatolls can be seen here.)

When two tectonic plates push up against one another so much that they end up shifting, that’s when earthquakes happen. While the majority of the time, they shift very quickly which causes vibrations to rise to the surface of the planet (aka earthquakes), occasionally the shifting process can take much longer with those living above the plates to not even feel anything. In fact, sometimes the vibrations can only be detected by experts using specialized equipment.
When the 32-year-long earthquake finally ended, it left devastation behind as it caused a massive 8.5-magnitude quake that created a large tsunami that hit the shores and killed thousands of people (this is known as the 1861 Sumatra earthquake).

It’s incredible that this slow-motion earthquake was discovered as they have only been recognized since the late part of the 1990s when they were first detected in the Pacific Northwest of North America as well as off the coast of Japan. And there are slow-motion quakes that experts believe are happening right now in different locations of Indonesia. For example, Rishav Mallick, who is a Ph.D. candidate at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, said that the island of Enggano is “sinking a little too fast.” “It’s not just one isolated event in the 1800s.” “We’re seeing this happen right now.”
