Scientists Detect Massive Structure Under Antarctica

Researchers have uncovered the existence of a monumental geological structure buried two miles beneath the frigid ice of Antarctica.

According to a new paper, published in the journal Nature, the massive structure is made up of several previously known glacial landforms, like the Wilkes and Aurora subglacial basin region of East Antarctica, as well as Lake Vostok, the largest known subglacial lake on the planet.

These features have been studied separately for years, a press release notes, but have never been recognized as individual pieces to a larger puzzle.

Called the East Antarctic Fan-shaped Basin Province, the newly-identified structure likely represents one of the largest Earth features of its kind. While more work will be needed to corroborate the findings, the theorized formation could be crucial for understanding how Antarctica came to be, and how its three major ice sheets may respond to a warming climate.

To map the structure, scientists compiled datasets from a buffet of sources, like geological observations, gravity measurements, magnetic data, and models of the Earth’s crust, among others.

Added together, those datasets led researchers to conclude the geological feature likely formed through a process known as “distributed rotational extension,” where continental crust slowly stretches outward from a central point over a period of millions of years.

“Because these basins underlie about half of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet, they are likely to heavily influence both ice-flow and landscape evolution, making them essential to Antarctic glacial and hydrological processes,” the study’s authors write.

It was clear to me this was something created by intelligent beings long ago and may even be inhabited today. The However, if we saw them, would we recognize them as an intelligent species? Probably if they wanted us too, I mean what if they were light entities that could only be seen during the night time? Then day time rules seeing them, and night such light entities have been seen in China, Japan and Taiwan, this location is at its center...and since I myself saw at midnight about 13 years ago hundreds of light entities flying over our apartments when I was out front entering the outside area of the apartments, where me, my son and my wife all saw several hundred glowing lights we can see through that looked like transparent tear drops passing over us at about 100 miles per hour, after they passed by, a few must have noticed us because about 7-9 came back and began circling over us (New Taipei City). They were curious about us, and my son was scared, about 8 years old at the time, cried after a few minutes thinking they were ghosts and my wife led him into the house. The lights united in a few minutes into a sphere large like the moon and then I went in the house. The whole thing lasted about 7-10 minutes. I took some video, but the lights were so faint that they just barely showed up on video. So...light entities are a real thing. I can now recognize similar videos that had the same entities in them...which has happened around the globe but always dismissed as city lights, but...they are wrong.

Scientists discover ‘zombie’ sea cucumber that could outlive us all

If you told a guy in the 1760s – when the average lifespan was 38 – that you were 82, he’d probably think you could live forever.

Now, Canadian scientists may have accidentally discovered something that’s really immortal – a discarded chunk of sea cucumber.

A relative of starfish and sea urchins, sea cucumbers are blobs that creep across the ocean floor on tentacle-feet, gobbling up algae and plankton.

Three years after scientists amputated bits of a scarlet sea cucumber, known to experts as a Psolus fabricii, the tissues refuse to die.

The severed tube feet and tentacles have sat inside a tank of natural running seawater, slowly growing and healing.

Marine biogeochemist Rachel Sipler from the non-profit Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Science said the sample is a ‘real-life zombie’.

‘We haven’t grown a new, complete sea cucumber yet, but we are seeing pretty stunning growth and diversification of cells literally years after this tissue was removed,’ she said.

‘It’s like a lizard that loses its tail. We know some lizards can grow new tails; we’re talking about whether the tail can grow a new lizard.’

What is going on?

When humans lose a chunk of flesh, it dies and decays. Same goes for lizards and other sea cucumbers, even though they can regenerate lost limbs.

This isn’t so with scarlet sea cucumbers, found in the cold waters of the Arctic and North Atlantic Ocean, however.

Instead, the tentacles that these klutzes of the ocean lose when they get into scrapes or bump into things keep on living, according to a recently published study in Science Advances.

Sipler and her team at Memorial University of Newfoundland scooped up a discarded tube foot – a tiny limb used for movement and feeding.

They placed the samples in seawater, which is crawling with bacteria and organic matter.

Unexpectedly, they found that the lost pieces of tissue were repairing their wounds and that their immune cells were springing into action.

The tentacles – which showed no signs of rot – even responded to tactile stimuli, suggesting the preservation of the animal’s neural network.

The researchers realised that these slivers of sea cucumber were feeding off the organic material in the water, despite having no mouth or digestive system.

They were even soaking up the amino acids – which cells string together to form proteins – in the seawater.

And they were still doing it three years later, long after the study had wrapped up, the team discovered.

The researchers said that this is the first time a tissue sample has survived and thrived in a natural setting.

‘Our findings challenge conventional perceptions of tissue immortality,’ they concluded.

Why is this a big deal?

Immortal cells are nothing new – scientists have made them using animal and human stem cells, which are blank canvases that all tissues and organs in your body are created from.

But these cells can only be kept alive in highly controlled and clean environments. Keeping cells inside a tissue section is even harder.

Yet the researchers found a slab of Scarlet sea cucumber could live ‘indefinitely’ in dirty seawater.

This species even seems to be unique compared to other sea cucumbers, whose appendages usually decay within three or so months.

Dr Robert Puschendorf, an associate professor in conservation biology at the University of Plymouth, who was not involved in the study, told Metro that these prickly cucumbers don’t quite hold the ‘secret to immortality’.

‘This is not an immortal animal, and the study does not tell us anything about why humans age,’ he says.

‘[Lead author Sara Jobson] herself is clear on this point, noting that the tissue never grew back into a whole sea cucumber and that the fragments sit somewhere between alive and dead, which is why her team calls them “zombies”.’

At least 17 earthquakes up to a 4.4 magnitude were detected just miles from Area 51,  a cultural phenomenon thanks to decades of conspiracy theories connecting the base to UFOs, aliens and experimental aircraft testing.

The 4.4-magnitude earthquake kicked off the seismic activity, striking just 2.5 miles underground, fueling speculation about possible underground testing.

The tremors were recorded in an area not typically known for frequent seismic activity, raising questions among observers tracking the unusual cluster.

Geophysicist Stefan Burns described the location as 'an unusual place to get an earthquake,' noting that the region has historically remained relatively quiet compared with other fault-heavy zones across the West.

He also pointed to the shallow depth of the strongest quake, roughly just miles underground, a detail he said made the event particularly noteworthy.

Burns added that earthquakes and underground explosions can sometimes produce similar seismic signatures, especially when energy is released suddenly beneath the surface.

However, earthquake swarms can occur when stress shifts along nearby fault lines, causing clusters of smaller tremors as the Earth's crust adjusts. 

The Nevada desert sits within an active tectonic region where the ground is slowly stretching apart, making sudden bursts of seismic activity possible even near sensitive sites like Area 51.

Experts have recovered 42 lost pages from a major early Christian manuscript, heralding a 'breakthrough' for understanding ancient scripture.

Scientists successfully reconstructed passages from Codex H – one of the world's most important early New Testament scripts.

The text, a 6th century copy of the Letter of St Paul, was lost to history when it was disassembled at the Great Lavra Monastery on Mount Athos in Greece in the 13th century.

Its pages were re–inked and reused as binding material and flyleaves for multiple other manuscripts.

Today, the surviving fragments are scattered across libraries in Italy, Greece, Russia, Ukraine and France.

Using advanced imaging techniques, an international team of academics have now been able to digitally reconstruct the missing pages – revealing text unseen for centuries.

The findings shed new light on ancient scribal habits and early biblical structures, providing unique insight about how people interacted with their sacred texts.

Scientists successfully reconstructed passages from Codex H – one of the world's most important early New Testament scripts

Paul's letters, also known as Pauline epistles, are a group of texts in the New Testament traditionally attributed to Paul the Apostle and are the earliest written explanations of Christian theology.

These letters were written in the 1st century and sent to early Christian communities and individuals, explaining Christian beliefs and giving practical advice to churches.

Codex H, a 6th century handwritten book, contains a collection of these letters and shows how they were being used centuries later.

The codex was later taken apart and reused in other books, with pages scattered across multiple countries.

The researchers explained their breakthrough came from an important starting point – the knowledge that at one point, the manuscript was re–inked.

This describes the process of a scribe tracing over the original, fading ink with new ink to preserve the text.

'The chemicals in the new ink caused "offset" damage to facing pages,' Professor Allen explained.

'They essentially creating a mirror image of the text on the opposite leaf – sometimes leaving traces several pages deep, barely visible to the naked eye but very clear with latest imaging techniques.'

Using advanced imaging techniques, an international team of academics have now been able to digitally reconstruct the missing pages

Using specialised imaging techniques, the team processed images of the remaining manuscript pages in order to recover 'ghost' text that no longer physically exists.

This meant they could retrieve multiple pages of information from every single page of remaining manuscript.

Radiocarbon dating was then used to confirm the parchment's 6th century origin.

While the recovered text contains known portions of Paul's letters, the discovery offers a unique insight into how the New Testament has evolved and been understood through the centuries.

Key findings include the earliest known examples of chapter lists, which differ drastically from how the letters are divided today.

The fragments also show how 6th century scribes corrected, annotated and interacted with sacred texts.

Meanwhile the physical state of the manuscript also reveals how sacred works were reused and repurposed once they fell into disrepair.

For historians, the newly–recovered texts provide evidence for how the New Testament developed over time.

A new print edition of Codex H is forthcoming and a digital edition is freely available here, making these recovered pages available to the public and scholars for the first time in centuries.

Archaeologists have been excavating the remains of a cathedral in the ancient city of Hippos in Israel, near the Sea of Galilee.

According to the gospels, Jesus' earthly ministry centred around this area, making it a significant site in the history of Christianity.

And it is here that the team came across an unusual object – a unique marble item featuring three hemispheric cavities which they believe used to hold three different oils.

Traditionally, during baptisms, a person is anointed with two oils – one used before the water baptism and a different one used after.

But the new discovery indicates people used to be anointed with oils three times – and it could force historians to rethink the history of the practice.
