A scientist, Peter Ma, has applied machine learning and artificial intelligence to data collected by the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute, a press statement reveals.

Based on initial results, there is a slight chance the new method may have unearthed non-Earth-based "technosignatures". That would mean it had achieved SETI's goal of finding signs of extraterrestrial intelligence.

Algorithm finds 8 promising signals that could be of alien origin

SETI was founded in 1984 to scan the skies for radio signals that could originate from technology developed by intelligent alien civilizations. The search so far has turned up empty-handed, though there is a slight chance that we may have seen a breakthrough.

In a new paper published in the journal Nature Astronomy, Ma describes how he trained a machine-learning algorithm on 480 hours of telescope data from 820 stars collected in 2016. The algorithm identified eight signals of interest that previous algorithms had failed to detect.

Ma, an undergraduate at the University of Toronto, told VICE in an interview that their method completely removes humans from the equation, unlike previous machine learning algorithms applied to SETI data. "This work relies entirely on just the neural network without any traditional algorithms supporting it and produced results that traditional algorithms did not pick up," Ma explained to VICE.

Why did the algorithm single out those 8 signals?

The result of Ma and colleagues' experiment is that we now have eight signals that may have originated from advanced extraterrestrial species. Ma's algorithm specifically pinpointed signs that "are narrow band, doppler drifting signals originating from some extraterrestrial source."

As the SETI Institute's press statement points out, "signals caused by natural phenomena tend to be broadband,". In contrast, the ones picked up by the algorithm "were narrow band, meaning they had narrow spectral width, on the order of just a few Hz." The signals also exhibited a number of properties that suggest they aren't caused by Earth-based interference, such as the fact they had non-zero drift rates.

Machine learning could crack the SETI code

Essentially, Ma and colleagues' algorithm filters out Earth-based interference while also identifying signals with specific features that could mean they are being used for communication or other technological applications.

Scientists are increasingly using machine learning and artificial intelligence to sift through massive amounts of cosmic data that could otherwise take humans years to investigate. Machine learning is a subset of AI that uses data to refine its search parameters and improve its capabilities.

Ma chose to use a machine learning neural network because this allows adaptability that is not afforded by more traditional artificial intelligence algorithms. "The issue is that the nature of an ET signal is not completely known," he told VICE, "hence our proposed approach is to just learn it."

Though Ma and colleagues' algorithm pinpointed eight unique signals, there is no guarantee that these signals did, indeed, originate from alien civilizations. The next step is for researchers to investigate the signals in more detail and determine whether it's worth carrying out follow-up observations on the regions of space from which the mystery signals originated.

“Living Nostradamus” Athos Salomé, has a prediction for 2023: He believes aliens will arrive through a portal in the controversial Area 51. He previously predicted the Covid-19 pandemic and conflict in Ukraine!

Athos Salomé, known as the “Living Nostradamus,” (you can check him out on Linktr.ee) has made a new prediction for 2023 that is causing a stir. He claims that a three-dimensional portal will open under Area 51, the highly classified US Air Force base in Nevada. Salomé says that this portal will transport people between space and time dimensions and that Elon Musk already knows about it. According to the so-called psychic, the portal will be accessible through an underground tunnel located at Area 51.

Area 51 has been the subject of many conspiracy theories and has long been associated with aliens and UFO sightings. The base covers 2.3 million acres of remote desert in Nevada and is said to have a network of airstrips stretching up to 12,000ft. The official explanation from the US military is that it serves as a testing ground for tactics, development, and advanced training.

However, the true purpose of Area 51 has remained a mystery for decades, fueling speculation about its connection to aliens and extraterrestrial technology. The base has been the site of many supposed UFO sightings, and rumors of secret experiments and underground facilities have circulated for years.

The Contact team have traveled the world to gather UFO footage and talk to witnesses about their encounters. The footage they have collected is stunning and has been analyzed using sophisticated software to determine its authenticity.

One piece of footage, captured in Rio Blanco, showed an object moving at a high speed and maintaining a general shape. The team used motion analysis software to track the object’s movement and found that the motion vectors were consistent with the object’s predicted path. This level of detail and accuracy would be difficult to fake, leading the team to conclude that the footage is authentic.

Another piece of footage was captured by a medical doctor in Phoenix, who saw a formation of six lights in the sky. The doctor captured video of the lights, which appeared to be attached to something, and over 10,000 people reported seeing the same sighting. Despite multiple sightings over several years, there has been no official explanation from the military or government.

Sorry but that is statement misleading. Fact is that there were military exercises being carried out on the other side of the mountain bordering that side of Phoenix and flares were being dropped from aircraft. An analysis performed by a completely credible but non-military or government organization showed the descent rate of deployed flares, intensity, duration etc, and then they compared that to the “lights” and the mountain and camera locations…..everything checked out. Even if the Gov or military does step up remain skeptical, they love when people blame ALIENS for things they do and people misinterpret. That all being said that white object ripping through the air across that valley? That’s something very intriguing.

Riding the Seas: Kelpies, Hippocampus, and More Monstrous Horses

There are many interesting legends from around the world and through the ages that refer to mythical beings that are similar to horses. The Scottish Kelpies are some of the more intriguing of these creatures and tales about these water horses have been told far and wide around that country. But before those creatures existed there was a sea horse in Greek myth that was known as a hippocampus.

Shape-shifting and Sacrifices to Water Spirits

In Scotland, the kelpie is a shape-shifting water spirit which resides in lakes and pools. The historian Douglas Harper defined kelpies as demons appearing specifically in the shape of horses. However, some legends say that it can also assume human form.

While appearing as a human, the kelpie will still have its hooves. For this reason, the kelpie is seen as a malefic entity. In Scotland, almost every lake has a story about a kelpie. Probably the most well-known of these stories is the one about the kelpie of Loch Ness .

In the past, human sacrifices were made to appease the gods and spirits of the waters. In time, this practice led to the appearance of the belief in evil water horses. There are some stories, however, in which kelpies are seen in a more positive light and are said to protect small children from drowning in lakes. Kelpies also apparently warned young women to be wary of handsome strangers.

Kelpies are the most common water spirits in Scottish folklore and they can live both in water as well as on land. They often appear in legends as strong and beautiful black horses which live in the deep pools of rivers and streams in Scotland.

Kelpies are known for preying on the humans they encounter. The hooves of the kelpie are thought to be reversed to those of a regular horse. In Aberdeenshire, the kelpie allegedly has a mane of serpents, while the kelpie of River Spey was known to be white and capable of singing.

More Vicious Horse Beings

The tangie or tongie is another shape-shifting spirit from Orkney and the Shetland Isles. It is a sea spirit appearing in the form of a horse or as a merman. This spirit can also appear as an old man. The creature is said to be covered with seaweed and it allegedly loves to terrorize lonely travelers.

Specifically, the tangie has a predilection for young women, whom it allegedly will abduct and devour under water. Black Eric, a sheep rustler, was known in legends for riding a tangie. The tangie he rode offered him supernatural assistance while raiding surrounding crofts. Ultimately, Black Eric fell to his death in the sea - but his tangie continued to terrorize the area.

People in the Highlands were often wary of lone animals and strangers they encountered near the water’s edge.

The each-uisge of Scotland is known as “Ech-Ushkya” or as the “each-uisce” in Ireland. Literally meaning “water horse” it is a water spirit resembling the kelpie, but is far more vicious. Folklorist Katharine Briggs described the mythical being as “perhaps the fiercest and most dangerous of all the water-horses”.

While the kelpie inhabits rivers and streams, the each-uisge lives in the sea and in lakes. It is a shape shifter disguised as a beautiful horse, a pony, a giant bird or as a handsome man. While it is in its horse form, should a person mount it, then the individual is only safe while the each-uisge is on land.

A blacksmith from Raasay lost his daughter to the each-uisge. In revenge the blacksmith and his son made a set of large hooks, in a forge they set up by the loch side. They then roasted a sheep and heated the hooks until they were red hot. At last a great mist appeared from the water and the each-uisge rose from the depths and seized the sheep. The blacksmith and his son rammed the red-hot hooks into its flesh and after a short struggle dispatched it. In the morning there was nothing left of the creature apart from a jelly like substance .

Hippocampus and Other Ancient Horses

The hippocampus, meaning “horse monster” in Greek, is a mythical creature in Greek and Phoenician mythology. In English, the creature is often called a “sea-horse”. The being was also adopted by Etruscan mythology and it is described as having the upper body of a horse and the lower body of a fish.

Melquart, the tutelary god of the Phoenician city of Tyre, was depicted as riding a winged hippocampus. Poseidon was also the god of horses and known as Poseidon Hippios.

Even though it was not a water horse, Sleipnir of Norse mythology is also worth mentioning here. Sleipnir was believed to be the eight-legged steed of the chief god Odin, the child of Loki, and the fastest horse in all of the nine worlds.

Horses have been present since the beginning of human history and they have also entered the myths and legends of the world in a variety of forms – sometimes sweet, sometimes scary.

Using the Lunar Lab and Regolith Testbeds at NASA’s Ames Research Center, a team created this simulated lunar environment to study lighting conditions experienced at the unexplored poles of the Moon.

The testbeds aren’t huge, but big enough to provide a variety of conditions. The first original sandbox measures approximately 13 feet by 13 feet by 1.5 feet (4 meters by 4 meters by 0.5 meter) and is filled with eight tons a lunar regolith simulant called Johnson Space Center One simulant (JSC-1A), which makes this the world’s largest collection of the material. The JSC-1A simulant mimics the Moon’s mare basins and is dark grey in color.

The new larger testbed, measures 62 feet by 13 feet by 1 foot (19 meters by 4 meters by 0.3 meter) and is  filled with more than 20 tons of Lunar Highlands Simulant-1 (LHS-1), which is light grey to simulate the lunar highlands. This larger sandbox can be reconfigured if needed to be a smaller, but deeper, testbed.

Some of the things tested are how various tools and rovers work in the incredibly abrasive and “sticky” regolith. Moon dust has grains as fine as powder, but it can also be sharp as tiny shards of glass. In addition, it has the annoying ability to electrostatically cling to everything.

The special lighting system can mimic both the dark polar regions of the Moon and the glaring, unfiltered light elsewhere on the Moon.

“When rovers and astronauts carry out missions at the lunar South Pole, they’ll have to navigate in low-angle lighting and overcome harsh solar glare that makes it difficult to see,” NASA said in a press release. “Because the Sun will never rise overhead, even the smallest rock or crater will cast long shadows and cloak craters in darkness. And, at times, the Sun will blaze at eye-level as it reflects off the soil.”

The new testbeds have been instrumental in testing out NASA’s new Moon rover, the Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER). VIPER’s rover drivers will rely on a system of rover-mounted lights and cameras to steer clear of boulders, descend steep declines into craters, and avoid other potentially mission-ending dangers. The facilities at the Regolith Testbed  allowed research teams create over 12 different scenarios of craters and rock formations to improve the rover’s autonomous navigation system, so it can navigate safely through unknown terrain and harsh conditions.

Despite their mysterious nature, FRBs are ubiquitous and the best estimates indicate that events arrive at Earth roughly a thousand times a day over the entire sky. None of the theories or models proposed to date can fully explain all the properties of the bursts or the sources. While some are believed to be caused by neutron stars and black holes (attributable to the high energy density of their surroundings), others continue to defy classification. Because of this, other theories persist, ranging from pulsars and magnetars to GRBs and extraterrestrial communications.

CHIME was originally designed to measure the expansion history of the Universe through the detection of neutral hydrogen. Roughly 370,000 years after the Big Bang, the Universe was permeated by this gas, and the only photons were either the relic radiation from the Big Bang – the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) – or that released by neutral hydrogen atoms. For this reason, astronomers and cosmologists refer to this period as the “Dark Ages,” which ended roughly 1 billion years after the Big Bang as the first stars and galaxies began reionizing neutral hydrogen (the Reionization Era).

Specifically, CHIME was designed to detect the wavelength of light that neutral hydrogen absorbs and emits, known as the 21-centimeter hydrogen line. This way, astronomers could measure how fast the Universe was expanding during the “Dark Ages” and make comparisons to later cosmological eras that are observable. However, CHIME has since proven itself to be ideally suited for studying FRBs, thanks to its wide field of view and the range of frequencies it covers (400 to 800 MHz). This is the purpose of the CHIME/FRB Collaboration, which is to detect and characterize FRBs and trace them back to their sources.

As Dunlap Postdoctoral Fellow and lead author Ziggy Pleunis told Universe Today, each FRB is described by its position in the sky and a quantity known as its Dispersion Measure (DM). This refers to the time delay from high to low frequencies caused by the burst’s interactions with material as it travels through space. In a paper released in August 2021, the CHIME/FRB Collaboration presented the first large-sample catalog of FRBs containing 536 events detected by CHIME between 2018 and 2019, including 62 bursts from 18 previously reported repeating sources.

For this latest study, Pleunis and his colleagues relied on a new clustering algorithm that looks for multiple events co-located in the sky with similar DMs. “We can measure the fast radio burst’s sky position and dispersion measure up to a certain precision that depends on the design of the telescope that’s being used,” said Pleunis. “The clustering algorithm considers all fast radio bursts that the CHIME telescope has detected and looks for clusters of FRBs that have consistent sky positions and dispersion measures within the measurement uncertainties. We then do various checks to make sure the bursts in a cluster are really coming from the same source.”

Of the over 1000 FRBs detected to date, only 29 were identified as repeating in nature. What’s more, virtually all repeating FRBs were found to be repeating in irregular ways. The only exception is FRB 180915, discovered by researchers at CHIME in 2018 (and reported on in 2020) and pulses every 16.35 days. With the help of this new algorithm, the CHIME/FRB collaboration detected 25 new repeating sources, almost doubling the number available for study. In addition, the team noted some very interesting features that could provide insight into their causes and characteristics. As Pleunis added:

“When we carefully count all our fast radio bursts and the sources that repeat we find that only about 2.6% of all fast radio bursts that we discover repeat. For many of the new sources we have detected only a few bursts, which makes the sources quite inactive. Almost as inactive as the sources that we have only seen once.

“We thus cannot rule out that the sources for which we have so far only seen one burst, will eventually show repeat bursts as well. It is possible that all fast radio burst sources eventually repeat, but that many sources are not very active. Any explanation for fast radio bursts should be able to explain why some sources are hyperactive while others are mostly quiet.”

These findings could help inform future surveys, which will benefit from next-generation radio telescopes that will become operational in the coming years. These include the Square Kilometer Array Observatory (SKAO), which is expected to gather its first light by 2027. Located in Australia, this 128-dish telescope will be merged with the MeerKAT array in South Africa to create the world’s largest radio telescope. In the meantime, the prodigious rate at which new FRBs are being detected (including repeating events) could mean that radio astronomers could be close to a breakthrough!

Draper to send a mission to the far side of the Moon

Draper has received a USD 73 million NASA contract to deliver several cargoes to the far side of the Moon. It was  given as part of the CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Services) program, the main purpose of which is to attract American industry to the development of the moon of our planet.

Under the terms of the agreement, Draper is responsible for cargo integration, its delivery from Earth to the Moon (the SERIES-2 platform developed by the company will be used for landing) and operations on the lunar surface. This is the eighth contract issued under the CLPS program.

Schrödinger impact basin

The landing site of the mission will be the Schrödinger impact basin, a 312-kilometer crater located near the south pole of the Moon. This place is of great interest to geologists. Schrödinger is one of the youngest lunar craters. The impact that formed it tore off the lunar crust, exposing the upper part of the mantle in the inner ring. The outer ring of the crater consists of an impact melt.

Another interesting feature of the impact formation is that its bottom is covered with smooth sedimentary deposits. According to scientists, after the formation of the crater it became the site of a major eruption. Scientists hope that studying the basin will allow them to better understand the thermal and geophysical properties of the Moon’s interior, as well as the electrical and magnetic properties of the surface in a place sheltered from the influence of Earth’s electromagnetic fields.

Draper Mission Payload

The Draper descent platform will have to deliver instruments to the Moon for the implementation of three NASA experiments with a total mass of 95 kg. Among them:

• Pair of FSS seismometers (Farside Seismic Suite), which will provide the first-ever seismic data from the far side of the Moon.
• LITMS Payload Kit (Lunar Interior Temperature and Materials Suite). It is designed to study the structure of the heat flow and subsurface electrical conductivity of the lunar soil.
• The LuSEE instrument (Lunar Surface ElectroMagnetics Experiment), which will conduct a comprehensive study of electromagnetic phenomena on the surface of the Moon. LuSEE also uses plasma wave measurements to characterize the lunar ionosphere and the interaction of the solar wind and magnetospheric plasma with the magnetic fields of the lunar surface and the Earth’s crust.

Currently, the implementation of the Draper mission is planned for 2025. It is not yet known which launch operator will be chosen to launch it to the Moon.

But building radio observatories on the far side of the Moon is no easy task, so we have to start small. One of the first steps is LuSEE Night, the Lunar Surface Electromagnetic Explorer, a small radio antenna and instrument package that is scheduled to be delivered to the far side of the Lunar surface as early as 2025.

LuSEE Night owes its technological heritage to the Parker Solar Probe, and is in fact nearly an identical copy of one of the instruments onboard that spacecraft. LuSEE Night consists of two 6m long antenna set in a cross-shaped pattern along with a bare bones set of electronics. 

In observing mode the instrument is relatively quiet, so it doesn’t add to any radio contamination. It can then send up any data to an orbiting Lunar spacecraft which sends the data back to Earth.

The team behind LuSEE Night hopes to capture some of the first observations of the very low frequency radio universe, which includes emissions from cosmic rays spiraling around the magnetic fields of the Milky Way galaxy and distant bright sources like supernovae and white dwarfs.

LuSEE Night is just the first step. The astronomers hope that it will prove to be a success, so that future observatories and missions on the Lunar far side can open up new windows into the cosmos.

The Lunar Surface Electromagnetics Experiment, or LuSEE, will be built by the Space Science Laboratory to study the magnetic and electric fields on the moon’s surface and how they interact with fine dust particles.

LuSEE will integrate flight-spare and repurposed hardware from the NASA Parker Solar Probe FIELDS experiment, the STEREO/Waves instrument, and the MAVEN mission to make comprehensive measurements of electromagnetic phenomena on the surface of the Moon.

Mysterious UFO Captured on Camera by FedEx Pilot Flying Over Monterrey, Mexico!

On the night of March 19, 2020, a team of experienced American aircrew flying a Boeing 767 encountered something truly extraordinary. As they flew from Queretaro International Airport in Mexico to Memphis, Tennessee, a strange, yellowish-white light suddenly appeared in their view and descended from above. Initially believed to be a meteor, the light then projected a beam of bright, white light onto their aircraft and seemed to take a collision course with their flight.

The crew, highly experienced with observing and identifying aircraft, prepared for evasive action, but to their surprise, the beam of light suddenly stopped and the light accelerated to the same speed and heading of the aircraft. It then maintained a safe distance of approximately 1-2 kilometers and paced the aircraft for a significant amount of time.

As they took a closer look, they realized they were not looking at another airplane. The copilot described the light as “a brilliant yellow-white plasma object, teardrop-shaped.” The captain even exclaimed “Platillo…., Platillo…” (“saucer”, implying “Flying Saucer” or “Platillo Volador” in Spanish). They noted the lack of navigation lights or any other features associated with airplanes and the light seemed to have a tail.

The crewmen quickly realized that they were witnessing something truly unique, something that defied conventional explanation. They were able to capture 8 photographs and a 4:47 video of the encounter from the cockpit, providing valuable evidence of the event.

The National Aviation Reporting Center on Anomalous Phenomena (NARCAP) was contacted by members of MUFON to look into the report. After reviewing the case and evidence, NARCAP agreed to conduct an independent analysis of the incident. NARCAP’s definition of an Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon (UAP) is “the visual stimulus that provokes a sighting report of an object or light seen in the sky, the appearance and/or flight dynamics of which do not suggest a logical, conventional flying object and which remains unidentified after close scrutiny of all available evidence.”

The Roswell Incident: Exploring the Possibility of Extraterrestrial Life

The Roswell Incident of 1947 has been the subject of much debate and speculation for many years. The story goes that a flying saucer crashed in the Foster Ranch near Roswell, New Mexico, and was later reported to have been recovered by the Roswell Army Airfield. Devils Tower: Born From the Earth After a Bear Mated with a Woman

Devils Tower in Wyoming, USA holds both historical and ancestral importance. This magnificent geological feature has long been considered sacred by the many of the Native American tribes who have lived in the area and it was the first landmark declared a United States National Monument.

Where is Devils Tower?

This is a natural geologic formation which is part of the Bear Lodge Mountains, a small mountain range in Crook County, Wyoming. Whilst geologists are not entirely certain about how this tower was formed, several theories have been put forward.

The most widely accepted theory postulates that Devils Tower is actually a laccolithic butte. Such a feature is formed when a large amount of igneous rock rises to the surface of the earth but is sandwiched between two layers of sedimentary rock. As a result, a bulge in the earth is created, and the molten rock is unable to escape, thus allowing it to cool slowly underground.

An alternative theory suggests that it is the interior of an extinct volcano and was formed after the remaining debris and ash eroded away.

Native American Legend of Devils Tower

The Native Americans who live in area, however, rely on their folklore to explain how the tower came into being, and these tales vary from one tribe to another. As an example, according to Cheyenne folklore, a band of warriors and their families went to the area to worship the Great Spirit, as it is believed to be a sacred site. Whilst they were there, a huge bear mated with one of the warriors’ wives, and when the warrior found out about it, he was determined to kill the bear.

The bear, however, was so huge, that the warrior retreated to the camp for reinforcements. This was to no avail as well, and the terrified warriors, who had climbed up a big rock, began to pray to the Great Spirit to save them. As a result of their entreaties, a rock was made to grow out of the ground, which became Devils Tower, and from the top of this rock the warriors were able to kill the bear.

In fact, most of the Native American stories about Devils Tower involved bears, and therefore the site is also known by the Native American tribes as ‘Grizzly Bear’s Lodge’, ‘Bear Lodge Butte’, and ‘Bear’s Tipi’, amongst others.

The Search for Mountain Gold

Whilst the Native Americans were already aware of Devils Mountain, and have revered it for a long time, it was only recognized by others around the 19th century. It was only in 1875 that this tower received its current English name.

In that year, a scientific expedition in the area, which was aimed at confirming the presence of gold there, was conducted by the geologist Walter P. Jenney, who was guided by Colonel Richard Irving Dodge. According to Dodge, the tower was referred to by the Native Americans as the ‘Bad God’s Tower’, and hence the name Devils Tower was adopted by the team. It has been suggested that Dodge may have mistranslated the name of the landmark, as, in the Lakota language, for example, the words for ‘bad god’ and ‘bear’ are quite similar.

Devils Tower Makes History

Finally, on September 24, 1906, Devils Tower became the first United States National Monument. The proclamation was made by President Theodore Roosevelt, who had signed the Antiquities Act into law not long before that.

Since then, the site has become a tourist destination, and climbing the tower has become a popular activity. According to the National Park Service, between 5000 and 6000 rock climbers visit each year.

Galactic collisions act as a 'cosmic delivery service' for hungry monster black holes

Scientists have long thought that when galaxies collide, the violent process delivers gas that feeds supermassive black holes and acts as fuel for energetic outbursts. Now, astronomers have obtained the first evidence to support the existence of this "cosmic delivery service." 

The revelation demonstrates an important link between violent interactions with neighboring galaxies and the tremendous volumes of gas needed to fuel these monstrous black holes, which are thought to dwell at the hearts of most large galaxies. 

The discovery could finally reveal how supermassive black holes get enough fuel to power the intense activity that can light up the hearts of their home galaxies. Feeding supermassive black holes that power energetic outbursts are called active black holes, and the regions they dwell in are known as active galactic nuclei (AGN).

"Supermassive black holes fuel their activity by, in part, the gradual accumulation of gas from the environment around them," Sandra Raimundo, an astronomer at the University of Southampton in the U.K. who led the research, said in a statement. "Supermassive black holes can make the centers of galaxies shine very brightly when they capture gas, and it's thought this process can be a major influence on the way that galaxies look today.

"How supermassive black holes get enough fuel to sustain their activity and growth still puzzles astronomers, but the work we have carried out provides a step towards understanding this," she added.

Raimundo's team, which included researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles and the University of Copenhagen, tackled this mystery by using the Anglo-Australian Telescope in Australia to study the orbits of gas and stars in over 3,000 galaxies.

This allowed them to detect gas rotating in the opposite direction as the stars in some of the galaxies. This "misaligned" gas indicates an interaction, such as a collision and merger, between those galaxies and other galaxies in the past. 

Galaxies with misaligned gas were also more likely to feature an active supermassive black hole. This link between misaligned gas and active supermassive black holes hinted that the collision and merger of galaxies may deliver gas to where the galaxies meet. 

This gas then travels vast distances before encountering the massive gravitational influence of the supermassive black hole. Dragged toward the cosmic titan, the gas then ends its journey by being swallowed by the black hole and acting as a fuel source for AGN activity, the researchers explained. 

"The work that we carried out shows the presence of gas that is misaligned from stars is associated with an increase in the fraction of active supermassive black holes," Raimundo said. "Since misaligned gas is a clear sign of a past interaction between two galaxies, our work shows that galaxy interactions provide fuel to power active supermassive black holes."

This gas-delivery mechanism has been suspected for a long time, but this is the first observational evidence of galactic collisions acting as a "cosmic delivery service" feeding supermassive black holes.

"What is exciting about these observations is that we can now, for the very first time, identify the captured gas and trace it all the way to the center where the black hole is devouring it," study co-author Marianne Vestergaard, a professor at the University of Copenhagen's Niels Bohr Institute, said in the statement.

Next, the team will use the findings to investigate how much of the supermassive black hole's mass grew as a result of this feeding mechanism and the role this process has played in the evolution of galaxies.

Meet the 'Golden Boy' mummy: Teenager was buried with 49 amulets 2,300 years ago - including one next to his PENIS, study reveals

Most of us know someone who is a bit of a mummy's boy.

But scientists have discovered a 2,300-year-old teenager who takes the crown – after being buried with 49 precious amulets.

Researchers from Cairo University used CT scans to 'digitally unwrap' a mummy who had been discovered more than 100 years ago in a cemetery in Nag el-Hassay in southern Egypt.

They found dozens of different amulets, many of which were made of gold, had been carefully placed on or inside the body.

The 'Golden boy' mummy had been laid inside two coffins – an outer coffin with Greek inscription and an inner wooden sarcophagus 

These included a two-finger amulet next to the uncircumcised penis, a golden heart scarab placed inside the thoracic cavity, and a golden tongue inside the mouth. 

He was also clad in sandals and draped in garlands of ferns.

The 'Golden boy' mummy had been laid inside two coffins – an outer coffin with Greek inscription and an inner wooden sarcophagus.

Apart from the heart, his internal organs had been removed through an incision, while the brain had been removed through the nose and replaced with resin.

CT scans showed the boy was 128cm tall, between 14 and 15 years old, had good teeth and had no obvious known cause of death.

The amulets represent a wide range of Egyptian beliefs. 

For example, a golden tongue leaf was placed inside the mouth to ensure the boy could speak in the afterlife, while a right-angle amulet was meant to bring balance.

First author Dr Sahar Saleem said: 'Here we show that this mummy's body was extensively decorated with 49 amulets, beautifully stylized in a unique arrangement of three columns between the folds of the wrappings and inside the mummy's body cavity.

'These include the Eye of Horus, the scarab, the akhet amulet of the horizon, the placenta, the Knot of Isis, and others.

'Many were made of gold, while some were made of semiprecious stones, fired clay, or faience. 

'Their purpose was to protect the body and give it vitality in the afterlife.'

Writing in the journal Frontiers in Medicine, the researchers added: 'Findings from this study suggest that ancient Egyptians valued their children and provided them with ritual treatment.'

The ancient Egyptians believed that when we died, our spiritual body sought out an afterlife similar to this world.

But entry into this afterlife was not guaranteed – it first required a perilous journey through the underworld, following by an individual last judgement.

For this reason, relatives and embalmers did everything they could to ensure that their loved one might reach a happy destination.

The Saqqara necropolis at Egypt's ancient capital of Memphis has been an archeological gold mine recently … and to prove it, one of the latest discoveries there is covered with gold leaf. Gold seems to be the theme when it comes to mummies these days as the mummified remains of a boy that was never unwrapped was digitally unwrapped with a CT scanner and it show the boy covered with 49 golden amulets, including a gold tongue and a gold cover for his private part. Will this trigger a ‘gold rush’ of mummy hunters to Egypt?

“This mummy may be the oldest and most complete mummy found in Egypt to date.”

Egyptian archaeologist Zahi Hawass, the director of Egyptian excavation team which discovered the gold-covered mummy, made the announcement this week at the site of the Step Pyramid of Djoser in Saqqara, near Cairo. This has been a year-long excavation which also uncovered a 52-foot-long papyrus containing the complete Book of the Dead. However, that discovery pales in comparison to the finding of the mummied remains of a man named Hekashepesy. Hawass told the media that the mummy was found at the bottom of a 49-foot (15 meters) shaft in a group of tombs dating back to the fifth and sixth dynasties of the Old Kingdom – putting them in the 2500 BCE to 2170 BCE timeframe. The tombs are near the Step Pyramid of Djoser, which was completed around 2650 BCE. That gave Hawass and his team a good idea how old the limestone sarcophagus might be when they pulled it up from the shaft. While the coffin was sealed in mortar, Hawass was able to inspect its interior. (Photos can be seen here.)

“I put my head inside to see what was inside the sarcophagus: a beautiful mummy of a man completely covered in layers of gold. This mummy may be the oldest and most complete mummy found in Egypt to date.”

It is a challenge to accurately determine the age of Egyptian mummies. A naturally mummified body was found in a near Gebelein (now called Naga el-Gherira) in 1896 – the so-called Gebelein Man was estimated to have died around 3400 BCE and is nicknamed ‘Ginger’ for his red hair. The mummified body of Lady Rai, the nursemaid to Queen Ahmose-Nefertari, the first Queen of the 18th Dynasty of Ancient Egypt, was found in 1891 and dates to around 1530 BCE. The mummy of Amenhotep I is considered to be the oldest royal Egyptian mummy, dating to about 1506 BCE. Based on that, Hekashepesy is certainly in the running, if not the current leader, in the ‘oldest Egyptian mummy’ contest. Hawass stresses the significance of this discovery is not in its age or gold leaf but in the fact that Hekashepesy and the others found there were ordinary Egyptians.

“The most important tomb belongs to Khnumdjedef, an inspector of the officials, a supervisor of the nobles, and a priest in the pyramid complex of Unas, the last king of the fifth dynasty. The tomb is decorated with scenes of daily life.”

The team found another shaft that was 30 feet deep and contained three other tombs and many wooden statues. In addition to Khnumdjedef, they found the mummified remains of Meri, the “keeper of the secrets and assistant to the great leader of the palace” who oversaw the Pharaoh's archive documents, which were considered to be magic to common Egyptians who could not read. The wooden statues were of individuals and families, not just gods, and included three of one person, a judge and writer identified as “Fetek,” which were next to his mummy. Finally, this ancient burial site contained burial artifacts - amulets, stone vessels and other items.

While the discovery of the gold-covered mummy was significant, it didn’t overshadow an announcement just a few days before of another mummy taking a lot of gold into the afterlife.

"Here we show that this mummy's body was extensively decorated with 49 amulets, beautifully stylized in a unique arrangement of three columns between the folds of the wrappings and inside the mummy's body cavity."

In an interview with CNET, Sahar Saleem, a radiologist at Cairo University, explains how she and her team revealed new information about another old mummy – one which has been stored and unexamined in the Cairo Egyptian Museum since 1916. Saleem is the first author of the research paper, “Scanning and three-dimensional-printing using computed tomography of the “Golden Boy” mummy.” Published in the journal Frontiers of Medicine, which describes how she and her team used Computed Tomography (CT)  and 3D-printing to scan the mummified remains and learn enough to call it the “Golden Boy.”

“Biological sex could be determined from the presence of male genitalia; epiphyseal fusion and tooth eruption indicated an approximate age at death of 14–15 years.”

The CT scan provided a non-invasive view of the body and the 3D printing helped to digitally reconstruct the boy’s bones, blood vessels, soft tissues and more. It showed he wore a pair of white sandals, which appear to be the least expensive part of his burial outfit. The amulets, many made of solid gold, included the Eye of Horus -- a scarab beetle inside his chest – and a two-finger amulet beside his penis. (Many photos can be seen here.) The amulets were placed in specific areas in accordance with the aforementioned Egyptian Book of the Dead. A gold tongue amulet was placed inside the mouth to ensure the deceased boy could speak in the afterlife, and the two-finger amulet by the penis was to protect the embalming incision. The mummy’s eye lines and eyebrows were inlaid with stones, and the eye pupil was made of black obsidian.

Other amulets included a gold double-falcon-plume, gold scarab, stone serpent head, and a gold double ostrich plume, and the Golden Boy’s face was covered with golden head mask. On the medical side, the CT scan showed the boy had excellent teeth and had no signs of trauma, so the researchers assume the cause of death, even at such a young age, was natural. The mummy and coffin were discovered in 1916 at a necropolis in Nag el Hassaya, the cemetery of the city of Edfu. The scan helped date the boy’s death to between 330 BCE and 30 BCE, and the gold mask indicated he was of high status.

The mystery of ancient Egyptian mummification continues to unfold and goes on to fascinate us. These recent discoveries of a complete Book of the Dead, the gold-covered oldest known mummy and the Golden Boy show the Egyptians long had a strong belief in the afterlife and a reverence for the dead – and not just the deceased of the royal families but of ordinary Egyptians as well. We would do well to follow their examples rather than portray their mummified deceased in horror movies.

Miners of the Elga coal deposit (Yakut) in Siberia dug up a strange statue in the form of a woman with a sword and shield, and behind it there seem to be wings, like a fallen angel. The statue was unearthed by an excavator. 

Miners show their emotions and enthusiasm when they are standing next to the statue. If the translation is right, they say that they cannot describe or tell what it is and that right now the special services will arrive by helicopter to pick up the statue to an unknown location. 

Further study and examination by experts may be required to determine the significance of this potentially valuable ancient artifact, but since the special services are involved, it remains to be seen whether we will hear anything about it in the future.

UFO sightings have long been a source of fascination and intrigue, with many people claiming to have seen unidentified flying objects in the sky. One such sighting occurred a few years ago at Beijing airport, when a witness reported seeing a strange, crackling craft that seemed to hum with energy. The witness, who was a technician in the aerospace industry and had worked in electroplating components in his grandfather’s company, was struck by the unusual appearance of the craft.

According to the witness, the craft was large and had four louvered boxes that shimmered like a road on a hot summer day. The researcher concluded that the witness was describing a remembered event that he could not explain, and classified the sighting as an unknown aerial vehicle or UFO.

The researcher, who has been studying UFO sightings for many years, believes that this case is particularly intriguing. He speculates that the craft could have been a time traveler’s vehicle or something from the future, and notes that the craft had a “human-like” appearance, with the louvered boxes resembling an aircraft carrier.

Despite the many prosaic explanations for UFO sightings, the researcher is convinced that there is still a small percentage of cases that cannot be explained. He notes that this is what keeps him going in his research, and encourages others to get involved in the field. He offers a mentorship program to help new researchers get started, and encourages people to submit their own UFO sightings to MUFON, a safe place to report such sightings.

In 2010, Boeing hoped to complete a crewed Starliner mission by 2015. Yet, here we are in 2022, and the Starliner has simply seen delay after delay and failure after failure.
Meanwhile, SpaceX has been making tremendous progress in terms of Crew Dragon. The company has already completed seven crewed missions using Crew Dragon, and Crew Dragon will only be used more frequently moving forward.
But is Boeing Starliner a complete failure?
Hang on there till the end of this script as I rip off everything about Boeing Starliner line by line, word by word.

Frankly, not a failure, the Starliner program has been a disaster in all aspects.

Firstly, it’s actually painful to remember that NASA dumped $4.2 billion of taxpayer money on Boeing to build the spacecraft.
Furthermore, in an award that NASA's own inspector general described as "unnecessary," NASA paid Boeing an additional $287.2 million. This brings Boeing's total to $4.49 billion.

For the same services, the development of Crew Dragon, and six operational missions, NASA paid SpaceX $2.6 billion. After its initial award, NASA has agreed to buy an additional eight flights from SpaceX—Crew-7, -8, -9, -10, -11, -12, -13, and -14—through the year 2030. This brings the total contract awarded to SpaceX to $4.93 billion.

Since we now know how many flights each company will be providing NASA through the lifetime of the International Space Station, and the full cost of those contracts, we can break down the price NASA is paying each company per seat by amortizing the development costs.

Boeing, in flying 24 astronauts, has a per-seat price of $183 million. SpaceX, in flying 56 astronauts during the same time frame, has a seat price of $88 million. Thus, NASA is paying Boeing 2.1 times the price per seat that it is paying SpaceX, inclusive of development costs incurred by NASA.

This is the dramatic story of NASA's Apollo Program, beginning with President Kennedy's ambitious deadline for a lunar landing by the end of the decade, in response to Soviet success with Sputnik and cosmonaut Yuri Gargarin. We look at how Werner von Braun, a former rocket scientist of the Third Reich, played a leading role in NASA's planning. After groundbreaking success with the Mercury and Gemini missions, NASA was rocked by the Apollo 1 disaster, in which all three crew members (Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee) were killed in an accidental fire on the launch pad. NASA overhauled its designs and methods to achieve a successful manned launch with Apollo 7. Then came the launch of Apollo 8 aboard the mighty Saturn V rocket - the largest and most powerful rocket ever seen. The mission was a complete success, culminating in the first manned orbit of the moon, and the capture of the legendary 'Earthrise' photograph by astronaut Bill Anders.

Following the success of Apollo 11, and the fulfilment of Kennedy's goal of landing a man on the Moon, questions hung over the future of the Apollo Program. With declining public interest in Moon missions, and government funding slashed, NASA focused on scientific research. But the final phase of the Program is best remembered for the dramatic near-disaster of Apollo 13, in which the ingenuity of astronauts and Mission Control was pushed to the limit.

Het gaat wellicht om een in elkaar gevallen heuvel in een oude krater. Naast de V-vormige ingevallen structuur (de neus) zijn er twee kraters (de ogen) en een ronde breuklijn (het hoofd) te zien. "Het ronde patroon kan gevormd zijn door de afzetting van materiaal bovenop een oude (gevulde) impactkrater", denkt de UA. De neus zou een vulkanische opening kunnen zijn, die vroeger lava of ander materiaal heeft uitgespuwd, maar dat is giswerk. 

Dat we er de snuit van een beer in herkennen, komt omdat de mens nu eenmaal de neiging heeft om dingen te willen herkennen in bepaalde waarnemingen (pareidolie). 

De foto werd op 12 december genomen door NASA's Mars Reconnaissance orbiter (MRO) op een hoogte van ongeveer 251 kilometer boven de Rode Planeet.

In the 1991 film 'Terminator 2: Judgement Day' T-1000 liquifies himself to walk through metal bars, and this sci-fi scene is recreated in a real-world robot.

A video of a shape-shifting robot shows it trapped in a cage, melting and then sliding through the bars where it reforms on the outside.

Researchers led by The Chinese University of Hong Kong created the new phase-shifting material by embedding magnetic particles in gallium, a metal with a very low melting point of 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

While the team does not see the innovation threatening humanity like in the Terminator movie, they foresee it removing foreign objects from the body or delivering drugs on demand.

Scientists tested the robot through a series of 'obstacles.' One saw a person-shaped robot inside of a cage

As well as being able to shape-shift, the engineers say their robots are magnetic and can also conduct electricity.

The robots were tested in obstacle courses of mobility and shape-morphing.

Team leader Doctor Chengfeng Pan explained that where traditional robots are hard-bodied and stiff, 'soft' robots have the opposite problem; they are flexible but weak, and their movements are difficult to control.

'Giving robots the ability to switch between liquid and solid states endows them with more functionality,' said Pan.

Senior author Professor Carmel Majidi, a mechanical engineer at Carnegie Mellon University, in Canada said: 'The magnetic particles here have two roles.

'One is that they make the material responsive to an alternating magnetic field, so you can, through induction, heat up the material and cause the phase change.

'But the magnetic particles also give the robots mobility and the ability to move in response to the magnetic field.'

He explained that the process is in contrast to existing phase-shifting materials that rely on heat guns, electrical currents, or other external heat sources to induce solid-to-liquid transformation.

Prof Majidi says the new material also boasts an 'extremely fluid' liquid phase compared to other phase-changing materials, whose 'liquid' phases are considerably more viscous.

Before exploring potential applications, the team tested the material's mobility and strength in various scenarios.

The robot liquifies and slides through the bars. This is because of magnetic particles embedded in gallium, a metal with a very low melting point of 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

With the aid of a magnetic field, the robots jumped over moats, climbed walls, and even split in half to cooperatively move other objects around before coalescing back together.

'Now, we're pushing this material system in more practical ways to solve some very specific medical and engineering problems,' Pan said.

The team also used the robots to remove a foreign object from a model stomach and to deliver drugs on-demand into the same stomach.

The robot can be heated and an external magnet pulls it in a specific direction 

Once on the outside of the cage, the robot reforms back into its solid shape

The innovation may also work as smart soldering robots for wireless circuit assembly and repair and as a universal mechanical 'screw' for assembling parts in hard-to-reach spaces.

Prof Majidi added: 'Future work should further explore how these robots could be used within a biomedical context.

'What we're showing are just one-off demonstrations, proofs of concept, but much more study will be required to delve into how this could actually be used for drug delivery or for removing foreign objects.'

On January 6, 2023, an unidentified flying object (UFO) was sighted by a passenger on a Delta flight traveling from Los Angeles to Atlanta. The sighting occurred at an altitude of 41,000 feet above an unknown location in the southwestern region, possibly somewhere near Phoenix, Arizona.

According to the witness, the UFO appeared to be flying in tandem with the passenger’s plane, and at one point, the object’s brightness increased. The witness was able to capture both photographs and a video of the sighting.

UFO sightings have been reported throughout history, but the true nature of these objects remains a mystery. Some people believe that UFOs are extraterrestrial spacecraft, while others believe that they are man-made aircraft or natural phenomena.

Following Russia’s first illegal invasion of Ukraine, countries around the world attempted to punish the aggressor mainly through economic sanctions. In the US, those sanctions included bans on the import of most Russian aerospace technologies, including the RD-180 engines that still power ULA’s Atlas V workhorse rocket in 2023. In 2014, ULA announced that it would work with Blue Origin to integrate the startup’s BE-4 engine into a new rocket booster to end its reliance on Russian engines.

Unfortunately, the BE-4 engine has proved to be one of the main stumbling blocks on Vulcan Centaur's journey to flight readiness, which was originally expected in 2020.

One reason the BE-4's development is progressing slower than planned is that it's a hugely ambitious piece of engineering.

Check out this eyewitness video of a group of UFOs following a passenger jet this month. The UFOs are keeping steady speed with the plane and seem to rotate each of the four glowing objects. The passenger was recording through the window and has both sound and visual. However the UFOs seem to not have any sound, but we do hear the cabin. I see a huge similarity between these UFOs and the historic sighting of the Phoenix lights seen by thousands back in March of 1997. Defiantly the same types of UFOs.

A mysterious ball of light streaking across the sky seen in a video captured by a webcam monitoring the active Mount Merapi volcano in Indonesia on January 24, 2023. 

Indonesia's Space Research Center said that it was a Falconsat-3 satellite burning up upon reentering the Earth's atmosphere while others explained that the phenomenon was an aircraft flying at that specific location at the time of the sighting. 

There are various theories about what the orb could be, but without concrete evidence, it is difficult to say for certain. But some people believe that it could be of extraterrestrial origin.

Astronomers breathed a collective sigh of relief as the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) sprung to life. Getting the $10-billion telescope up and running following its launch on Christmas Day 2021 had been a nerve-racking affair. JWST would not fit into any modern rocket without being folded, and it had to rely on hundreds of moving parts to unfurl to full size once in space. Ultimately those efforts were successful, and the telescope has started returning some of its first calibration images to thrilled audiences back on Earth.
Yet the experience left many astronomers wondering if there was a simpler way to build and launch telescopes of this size. “We were worried about the unfolding,” says John Blevins of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. But with a larger rocket, “you don’t have to unfold in space. You can do it on the ground.”

As chance would have it, two such rockets are currently sitting on launchpads. Each should ultimately exceed the power of the mighty Saturn V, which sent the Apollo astronauts to the moon.

The first, NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS), is ready and waiting at Kennedy Space Center in Florida for its inaugural uncrewed voyage around the moon as part of the Artemis I mission—the opening shot in NASA’s plan to return humans to the lunar surface in the 2020s. The rocket, tentatively scheduled for a launch in late this month, is meant to be as reliable as possible and is therefore based, in large part, on legacy hardware from NASA’s Space Shuttle program.

But reliance on tried-and-true technology could be its Achilles’ heel: some estimates currently peg the SLS’s cost at an eye-watering $4.1 billion per launch. Presuming it is not scuttled by congressional appropriators feeling buyer’s remorse, its massive size could eventually be a boon for scientists seeking to send larger, more ambitious spacecraft and telescopes throughout the solar system—and even beyond. However, it can't!

Dream Chaser Tenacity's Final Tests Before Its First Launch

Spaceplanes are unique engineering feats that come with different benefits and downsides compared to traditional spacecraft. They also come in many different shapes and sizes with the Space Shuttle and Dream Chaser being great examples.

In the past, the Shuttle revolutionized space access and what was capable. Now in 2023, Sierra Space and Dream Chaser are hoping to do the same. In the last couple of months, we have seen an increase in progress from the company regarding the first Dream Chaser test article expected to go to space named Tenacity. This involves finishing heat shield application and an upcoming shipment for final ground testing. Once complete, the only other factor influencing this launch is the first flight of Vulcan scheduled in a couple of months, which Tenacity will launch on in the future.

However, with Vulcan a few months behind schedule and this being Dream Chaser ‘s first ever mission, a lot can come in the way of the launch set to happen in the third quarter of this year. Here I will go more in-depth into some of the recent updates on both Dream Chaser Tenacity and Vulcan, what to expect on this first mission, the significance of this spaceplane, and more.

New research based on Illustris TNG shows that the Milky Way is special. But it’s not special purely for its intrinsic qualities. It’s special in relation to its surroundings.

The findings are in a new paper based on Illustris TNG 300 published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. The title is “The unusual Milky Way-local sheet system: implications for spin strength and alignment.” The lead researcher is Miguel Aragón, a computational cosmologist and assistant professor at the National Astronomical Observatory, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico.

Illustris TNG simulates the large-scale structure of the Universe. It shows how galaxies are arranged on filaments of dark matter that weave their way through vast cosmic voids. Some of the features it shows are cosmological walls, also called galaxy walls. They’re enormous features, and one of them—a wall called the Hercules–Corona Borealis Great Wall—is the largest known structure in the Universe and is 10 billion light-years long.

Cosmological walls are made up of galaxies. They’re a subtype of filaments, but they’re flattened and have voids on either side. The voids seem to squash the walls into their flattened shape. The cosmological wall nearest the Milky Way is called the Local Wall or Local Sheet.

The Local Sheet influences how the Milky Way and other nearby galaxies rotate on their axes. The Milky Way takes about 250,000,000 years to rotate, and the study shows that the rotation is more organized than if the galaxy wasn’t near the Local Sheet.

The study also shows that the Milky Way is special. While typical galaxies tend to be much smaller in relation to walls, the Milky Way is surprisingly massive in relation to the Local Wall. According to the research, this is a rare cosmic occurrence.

One characteristic that cosmologists study is velocity dispersion. It describes how much dispersal there is in the velocity of a group of astronomical objects. The velocities are dispersed around a mean velocity. The velocity of objects in the Milky Way/Local Wall neighbourhood has low dispersion, meaning they’re not dispersed far from the mean.

This is unusual for a high-mass galaxy like the Milky Way in an environment like this, close to the Local Wall. To understand this better, the researchers looked for Milky Way Analogue (MWA) galaxies in Illustris TNG 300.

They found that MWAs in Local-Sheet analogues are rare. There was only one of them per 160–200?Mpc³  of volume in the simulation. With their research, they showed that the cold environment around the Local Sheet is responsible. “We find that a Sheet-like cold environment preserves, amplifies, or simplifies environmental effects on the angular momentum of galaxies,” they write in their paper.

Specifically, the Local Sheet affects the spin of the Milky Way. “… there are particularly strong alignments between the sheet and galaxy spins,” they explain, adding that in the simulation, the galaxies near walls have low spin parameters.

This all affects how galaxies grow and merge over time, they think. It leads to lower-mass galaxies in these types of cosmic neighbourhoods. That’s why the Milky Way, with its high mass, is so unusual and why the simulation found only one like it in up to 200 cubic megaparsecs of space.

The study reminds us of something critical: context is important. If we look at the Milky Way as a discrete object and compare it to other similar discrete objects, it doesn’t appear to be exceptional. But in relation to its surroundings, it is. “Our results highlight the importance of carefully characterizing the environment around our galaxy,” the paper states. “The effect of the geometry and coldness of Local Sheet environment on angular momentum processes may help us better understand current problems in galaxy formation…” 

In a press release presenting the research, the authors refer to the Copernican bias. “This bias, describing the successive removal of our special status in the nearly 500 years since Copernicus demoted the Earth from being at the centre of the cosmos, would come from assuming that we reside in a completely average place in the Universe,” the press release says. It shows the risk inherent in ignoring the environment of an object being studied.

This work also shows a potential flaw in how scientists use simulations like Illustris TNG. It’s misleading to think that any point in the simulation is the same as any other point. Galaxies close to a Cosmic Wall can evolve quite differently than at other points.

“So, the Milky Way is, in a way, special,” said research lead Miguel Aragón. “The Earth is very obviously special, the only home of life that we know. But it’s not the centre of the Universe or even the Solar System. And the Sun is just an ordinary star among billions in the Milky Way. Even our galaxy seemed to be just another spiral galaxy among billions of others in the observable Universe.”

“The Milky Way doesn’t have a particularly special mass or type. There are lots of spiral galaxies that look roughly like it,” Joe Silk, another of the researchers, said. “But it is rare if you take into account its surroundings. If you could see the nearest dozen or so large galaxies easily in the sky, you would see that they all nearly lie on a ring embedded in the Local Sheet. That’s a little bit special in itself. What we newly found is that other walls of galaxies in the Universe like the Local Sheet very seldom seem to have a galaxy inside them that’s as massive as the Milky Way.”

“You might have to travel half a billion light years from the Milky Way, past many, many galaxies, to find another cosmological wall with a galaxy like ours,” Aragón said. He adds, “That’s a couple of hundred times farther away than the nearest large galaxy around us, Andromeda.”

So is it okay if we feel special again? We’re obviously special just because we’re alive, and most matter we can see isn’t. But that doesn’t necessarily tell us about how much other matter might be alive and if we’re special. From a vantage point elsewhere in the Universe, there could be much more living matter. Before the rise of modern astronomy, we had no idea if there was life elsewhere or how special Earth might be. We’re wise to be cautious with the word special, according to one of the authors.

“You do have to be careful, though, choosing properties that qualify as ‘special,’” Dr. Mark Neyrinck, another member of the team, said. “If we added a ridiculously restrictive condition on a galaxy, such as that it must contain the paper we wrote about this, we would certainly be the only galaxy in the observable Universe like that. But we think this ‘too big for its wall’ property is physically meaningful and observationally relevant enough to call out as really being special.”

Archeologen ontdekken mogelijk oudste en meest complete mummie ooit gevonden in Egypte

Archeologen hebben een ontdekking gedaan vlakbij de Egyptische hoofdstad Caïro. Ze vonden er een graftombe van een farao met een mummie die mogelijk de oudste en meest complete is die ooit in Egypte werd gevonden. Dat meldt de leider van de opgraving, Zahi Hawass.

De mummie is 4.300 jaar oud en behoort toe aan een man met de naam Hekashepes. Hij lag in een kalkstenen sarcofaag die dichtgemaakt was met mortel, op de bodem van een schacht van vijftien meter diep, en was met goud bedekt.

“Deze mummie zou wel eens de oudste en meest complete kunnen zijn die tot nu toe gevonden werd in Egypte”, aldus Hawass in een verklaring. De sarcofaag verkeerde “in de exacte staat waarin de oude Egyptenaren hem 4.300 jaar geleden hebben achtergelaten.”

De tombe waarin de ontdekking werd gedaan maakt deel uit van een groep graven uit de vijfde (2504 tot 2347 voor Christus) en de zesde (2347 tot 2216 voor Christus) dynastie van het Oude Rijk. Die werden onlangs ontdekt vlakbij de Piramide van Djoser in Saqqara.

Een tweede graf behoorde toe aan Khnumdjedef, een inspecteur van ambtenaren, opzichter van edelen en priester tijdens het bewind van Unas, de laatste farao van de vijfde dynastie. Het graf was versierd met taferelen uit het dagelijkse leven.

Een derde graf bleek van Meri, die omschreven werd als “hoeder van de geheimen” en assistent van de grote leider van het paleis.

Tussen de graven lagen ook talloze beelden, waaronder eentje van een man met zijn vrouw en verschillende bedienden.

Eerder deze week kondigde Caïro ook de ontdekking van “een hele Romeinse stad” aan. Volgens critici hebben de berichten meer politieke en economische betekenis dan wetenschappelijke, aangezien het land in een ernstige economische crisis verkeert. Egypte rekent op het toerisme om de financiële situatie te herstellen.

Asteroïde komt deze nacht ontzettend dicht bij de aarde, maar “hij zal ons niet raken”, benadrukt NASA

Een asteroïde ter grootte van een bestelwagen zal vrijdagochtend langs de aarde razen. Dit zal een van de dichtstbijzijnde asteroïdes ooit zijn die we konden waarnemen. NASA benadrukt dat de asteroïde de aarde niet zal raken.

 NASA zei woensdag dat deze pas ontdekte asteroïde 3.600 kilometer boven de zuidpunt van Zuid-Amerika zal vliegen. Dat is 10 keer dichterbij dan de vele communicatiesatellieten die boven de aarde cirkelen.

De nadering vindt plaats om 1.27 uur vrijdagochtend Belgische tijd. Zelfs als de ruimterots een stuk dichterbij komt, zou het grootste deel ervan volgens wetenschappers in de atmosfeer verbranden en zouden sommige grotere stukken als meteorieten kunnen vallen.

NASA’s systeem voor het inschatten van het inslaggevaar, Scout, sloot een inslag snel uit, aldus de ontwikkelaar ervan, Davide Farnocchia. “Maar ondanks het zeer geringe aantal waarnemingen kon het toch voorspellen dat de asteroïde de aarde buitengewoon dicht zou naderen”, zei Farnocchia in een verklaring. “In feite is dit een van de dichtste naderingen door een bekend object ooit geregistreerd.”

Tientallen waarnemingen

De asteroïde die zaterdag werd ontdekt en bekend staat onder de naam 2023 BU, heeft een diameter van 3,5 tot 8,5 meter. Hij werd voor het eerst gezien door dezelfde amateur-astronoom op de Krim, Gennady Borisov, die in 2019 een interstellaire komeet ontdekte. Binnen een paar dagen werden tientallen waarnemingen gedaan door astronomen over de hele wereld, waardoor ze de baan van de asteroïde konden verfijnen.

Het pad van de asteroïde zal drastisch worden gewijzigd door de zwaartekracht van de aarde zodra hij voorbijraast. In plaats van elke 359 dagen rond de zon te cirkelen, zal hij volgens NASA in een ovale baan van 425 dagen terechtkomen.

27.000 asteroïden

Wetenschappers hebben in de buurt van de Aarde zo’n 27.000 asteroïden geïdentificeerd, waarvan ongeveer 10.000 met een diameter van ruim 140 meter. Er is er geen enkele bekend die in de nabije toekomst rechtstreeks op onze planeet zou afstevenen.

Afgelopen oktober slaagde NASA er voor het eerst in de bewegingsrichting van een asteroïde te veranderen door een sonde te laten inslaan. Aan de basis van dat experiment lag de vraag hoe onze Aarde kan worden beschermd tegen aanstormende hemellichamen. Een inslag van een asteroïde ongeveer 66 miljoen jaar geleden wordt door wetenschappers beschouwd als de belangrijkste theorie waarom de dinosauriërs zijn uitgestorven.

AMAZING UFO VIDEO! UAP drops two objects over Picket Post Mountain in Arizona

On January 22, 2023 at 2:47 PM, a group of hikers were on their way to Picket Post Mountain in Arizona when they noticed an unusual object in the sky. The hikers, who were identified as a sister, father, and the person who reported the sighting, observed the object for about 15 seconds before recording a video of the event. The footage, which was provided to the reporter, shows a small, bright dot in the sky that appears to be stationary at first. The object then drops two “flare-like” objects and then suddenly accelerates at a high speed before disappearing from sight.

The witnesses were unable to identify the object and speculated that it could have been a high-end drone or a helicopter. However, they were convinced that the object’s sudden acceleration was not something that could be explained by any known aircraft. The witnesses were also puzzled by the “flare-like” objects that were dropped by the object, as they were unable to explain what they were.

The sighting took place in an area known for its military and airforce bases, leading some to believe that the object could have been a classified military drone. However, the witnesses’ descriptions and the footage of the object do not match any known military aircraft.

Ex-Area 51 Sentry Reveals Shocking Details of Disc-Shaped Craft and Alien Beings at Top-Secret Facility

In a this video interview, former S-4 Level 2 sentry Derek Hennesy, also known as Connor O’Ryan, revealed his experiences of witnessing grey extraterrestrial beings and disc-shaped craft at Area 51. Hennesy explained that there are four levels in S-4, with the top level being a hanger for the flying disc ships. He stated that the first and second levels are all elevator where they keep the flying disc ships, and that while he was there, they were trying to operate the disc, which he witnessed unsuccessfully. He also mentioned that there were scientists and high-level White House officials present at the facility.

Hennesy described the layout of the facility, including four elevators and the fact that there are no centuries on levels three and four. He stated that he had no knowledge of what goes on in those levels, but he had heard rumors of a heavy or EB being present. He also described the bays on level two, which are separated by automatic doors and contain elevators that can bring the whole floor to the top.

The most striking revelation from Hennesy was his description of the storage of extraterrestrial bodies on level two. He stated that there were tubes present, about two feet in width and six feet in height, and that the creatures inside were completely identical, with no way of identifying them individually. He described the creatures as resembling the typical depiction of grey aliens, but with shriveled eyes that resembled prunes and no visible eyelids or hair. He also stated that their bodies were very thin and frail-looking.

Hennesy also described the security measures in place at the facility, including a plastic card with magnetic information, a handprint scan, and a right eye retina scan for access to levels three and four. CAS Space, a commercial spinoff from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), is already developing rockets for commercial satellite launches and announced in 2021 that it wants to send people up into space, albeit briefly.

According to the press release, CAS Space is working on a single-stage reusable rocket that would take as many as seven passengers on a 10-minute ride up above the Kármán line at 62 miles (100 kilometers), which is generally held to be the boundary between Earth's atmosphere and outer space.
Its name ZK6, high 15m; Diameter: 3.35m with 4 windows;
ZK6 is powered by 5 15t XY1 engines;
It can reuse more than 30 times.

All of us can see that the ZK6 remarkably resembles SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule, right?
In addition, ZK6 also has grid fins near the top of the rocket, which would guide the rocket’s descent. And instead of landing legs, the rocket would be "caught" by an arm attached to the launch tower, following a concept unveiled by SpaceX for its massive Starship Super Heavy rocket.
The crew capsule will meanwhile descend to Earth with the aid of three parachutes.

A Spacecraft Touched The Sun! Why Didn't It Melt?

The Parker Solar Probe created history by becoming the first spacecraft to touch the Sun. It passed through the Sun’s upper atmosphere, known as the corona. Temperatures in the solar corona can soar up to a million degrees Celsius. It’s the hottest region of the solar atmosphere and is about 15 times hotter than the surface of the Sun.

But the critical question is, why didn’t the Parker Solar Probe melt when it touched the Sun? No metal can withstand such high temperatures. So how did Parker manage to survive after plunging into the solar atmosphere? How is it still functioning efficiently after going through such an extreme environment?

The answer is a combination of the physics of the solar corona and the marvelous engineering of Parker.

This is a hypothetical process aimed at deliberately modifying the atmosphere, temperature, topography, or ecology of a planet or natural satellite to resemble the Earth's environment and make it suitable to host living beings.
The term terraforming itself was first used in 1982, when planetologist Christopher McKay wrote Terraforming Mars, an article for the British Interplanetary Society in which he proposed a method for heating the atmosphere of Mars.

This could be the first step, somewhat modest, but hope for future terraforming of the red planet.
For his part, the famous astronomer and science popularizer Carl Sagan, known for the television series Cosmos, proposed the application of planetary engineering on Venus to make it habitable in an article published in the journal Science in 1961.
They planned to seed the atmosphere of the fiery planet with algae, which would be responsible for quickly consuming CO2 from the atmosphere, thus reducing the planet's greenhouse effect and making it friendlier to other forms of life.

The United States government established the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization during the late stages of the Cold War. Created to render intercontinental atomic warfare obsolete amidst the rising nuclear tensions, the organization sought to create a protective shield that negated an enemy's first-strike advantage.

While the organization was active, several revolutionary concepts were studied, including Brilliant Pebbles.

Conceived as part of a pre-existing concept, the Brilliant Pebbles were small, maneuverable, rocket-powered, laser-equipped vehicle systems that were able to detect, track, and intercept enemy ballistic missiles when placed in orbit.

The idea was to send thousands of pebbles to circle the planet, ready to make an appearance at a moment’s notice. When necessary, the tiny missile interceptors would destroy their prey by smashing into them.

Most experts believed the project was too good to be true, but it soon became the main focus of the entire organization responsible for developing strategic defenses. Not even budget cuts would prevent the Brilliant Pebbles from beginning trials in 1990 and proving everyone wrong…

The Ship That Flew: USS Plainview

In the late 1950’s a new threat emerged from the Soviet Union for which the Americans were seemingly caught off guard. The latest generation of Soviet nuclear-powered submarines could reach incredible speeds. The Alfa-Class submarine under development at the time would eventually be capable of travelling at 41 knots (76 kph/47 mph) while fully submerged. At such speeds, these submarines could follow American fleets while easily evading ASW ships. Large, fast, ocean-going hydrofoils seemed like the answer.

The principle behind a hydrofoil was simple enough; by using water as a medium of flight, much like an airplane uses air, a hydrofoil could ‘fly’ rather than plow through water. Using a set of underwater wing-like structures called foils, these ships could lift out of the water as they accelerated, significantly reducing drag and allowing for much higher speeds and efficiency.

The first practical hydrofoil was demonstrated in 1906 by Italian inventor Enrico Forlanini. In the decades that followed, hydrofoils were progressively refined and in the 1950’s the first passenger hydrofoils were beginning to emerge on rivers and lakes. Almost all of these early hydrofoils used a configuration commonly referred to as ‘surface-piercing’ where the foils operate along the surface of the water. The configuration is dynamically stable and self-correcting as a result of the foil’s shape (typically curved) and the position of the center of gravity in relation to the foil. A major drawback is that operation along the water’s surface makes surface-piercing hydrofoils easily disturbed by waves and rough conditions. Surface-piercing hydrofoils are generally considered unsuitable for open ocean travel.

In the 1950’s the U.S. Navy took significant interest in a second hydrofoil configuration commonly referred to as ‘fully submerged’. Unlike surface-piercing hydrofoils, fully submerged hydrofoils have foils that operate entirely underwater beneath waves. This makes them far more suitable in rough conditions and open water. A major drawback is that they are not dynamically stable and require continual adjustments to the foil angle of attack to vary the lift generated. For decades an automated method of controlling the foils remained elusive.

With new emerging technologies in the 1950's and 1960's, like sophisticated sensors, autopilots and computers, the fully submerged hydrofoil configuration became far more practical. The U.S. Navy saw them as a potentially ground-breaking solution, ideally suited for ASW. Research and development efforts would culminate in a series of prototype ships, the most impressive being the 320-ton USS Plainview.

Man on Mars moves step closer to reality: NASA announces plans for a nuclear rocket that will slash seven-month travel time

NASA revealed Tuesday it is building a nuclear-powered rocket that could send humans to Mars much faster than the traditional craft - it currently takes seven months to reach the Red Planet.

The American space agency partnered with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) on the Demonstration Rocket for Agile Cislunar Operations (DRACO) program that will be tested in 2027.

A nuclear thermal rocket (NTR) offers a high thrust-to-weight ratio of around 10,000 times greater than electric propulsion and two-to-five times greater efficiency than in-space chemical propulsion.

The team plans to use previous NTR models to design DRACO, while providing it with a modern touch - the last technology tested on the ground was more than 50 years ago.

The space agency has studied the concept of nuclear thermal propulsion for decades.

This technology introduces heat from a nuclear fission reactor to a hydrogen propellant to provide a thrust believed to be far more efficient than traditional chemical-based rocket engines. 

Along with faster transit, the groups said NTR would reduce the risk for astronauts because they will not be traveling through space as long.

21 lives have been lost since the first man climbed into a rocket and jetted off into space 60 years ago, but as space agencies prepare for the first human mission to Mars many are sure the death toll will rise.

That would substantially reduce the time astronauts would be exposed to deep-space radiation and require fewer supplies, such as food and other cargo, during a trip to Mars.

NASA is eyeing the late 2030s for when it will send humans to the Martian world. 

'If we have swifter trips for humans, they are safer trips,' NASA deputy administrator and former astronaut Pam Melroy said Tuesday.

NTR transfers heat from the reactor directly to a gaseous hydrogen propellant. 

Heated hydrogen expands through a nozzle to provide thrust to propel a spacecraft. 

And materials inside the fission reactor must be able to survive temperatures above 4,600 degrees Fahrenheit. 

NASA has had NTR on its radar for more than 60 years and first embarked on the mission in 1961.

This led the then-NASA Marshall Space Flight Center director and rocket pioneer, Wernher von Braun, to advocate for a proposed mission, dispatching a dozen crew members to Mars aboard two rockets. 

Each rocket would be propelled by three Nuclear Engine for Rocket Vehicle Application (NERVA) engines - designs drafted in 1961.

As detailed by von Braun, that expeditionary crew would launch to the Red Planet in November 1981 and land on that distant world in August 1982. 

In presenting his visionary plan in August 1969 to a Space Task Group, von Braun explained that 'although the undertaking of this mission will be a great national challenge, it represents no greater challenge than the commitment made in 1961 to land a man on the moon.'

However, this vision of human boots on Mars ended in 1972 when priorities shifted and space budgets were cut.

Fast forward to the present, and NASA is back on the path to the Red Planet and has enlisted help from the US government to make it happen.

Dr Stefanie Tompkins, director at DARPA, said in a statement: 'DARPA and NASA have a long history of fruitful collaboration in advancing technologies for our respective goals, from the Saturn V rocket that took humans to the Moon for the first time to robotic servicing and refueling of satellites.

'The space domain is critical to modern commerce, scientific discovery, and national security. 

'The ability to accomplish leap-ahead advances in space technology through the DRACO nuclear thermal rocket program will be essential for more efficiently and quickly transporting material to the Moon and eventually, people to Mars.'

Amazing UFO sighting video from Zambia, 2023!

On January 20, 2023, a UFO sighting was reported in Lusaka, Zambia. The sighting was captured on video by a witness who was visibly amazed and confused by what he was seeing. In the video, the witness can be heard asking for a scientific explanation for the strange phenomenon he was witnessing. VIDEO! Bethany Beach UFO Sighting: Bright, Slow Flashing Objects Spotted in Delaware Skies

Residents of Bethany Beach, Delaware were in for a surprise on the evening of January 24th, 2023 when a UFO sighting was reported. The incident occurred around 8:35-8:40pm, when a local resident stepped out on their porch and saw several strange objects in the sky.

According to the witness, the objects were “super bright” and had a “slow, alternating flashing” pattern. They were also distinct from a plane that was seen in the vicinity, leading the witness to believe that they were not of terrestrial origin. The witness also mentioned that this was not the first time strange UFO sightings have been reported in the area.

The sighting could be related to the recent NASA launch from Wallops Island, however, no official statement has been made to confirm or deny this theory. The distance to Wallops Island – NASA’s Launch Pad 0-A is around 50 mi (80 km).
