Giant Ice Disk Shows Up In River May Indicate UFO Is Below! Maine, Videos, UFO Sighting News.
Date of discovery: January 20, 2019 Location of discovery: Westbrook, Maine This frozen disk was discovered spinning in a river at the town of Westbrook, Maine. The ice is in a perfect circle and may be forming above the river due to a large UFO parked below the river. If a metallic object is below the water, it could actually create a round circle of ice in the winter due to the cold metal shape and different temp above the metal craft. Thus the a disk the size of the UFO is forming. I do believe if radar is used to examine the lake floor, a round metallic craft will be seen. Scott C. Waring
Is there another Sun, Inner World and lost civilization inside of Earth?
Is there a slight possibility that there is an inner Sun, Inner World and lost civilization inside of Earth? In recent decades, a number of findings have been made that drastically alter the views on the Inner Earth theory.
According to many claims in the past decades, there is a world inside of our planet filled with supernatural beings, incredible technologies, and unexplained phenomenon. The ‘mythical’ land inside of our planet, its supernatural civilizations, and secrecy behind the entire subject stretches back over half a century. While the basis backing up such claims are nearly nonexistent, the legends must have originated from somewhere. What if Jules Verne’s classic “A Journey to the Center of the Earth” is true? And somewhere down there, an entirely new world is waiting to be explored, a place where somehow, living beings inhabit the depths of our planet, a place that ancient cultures and civilizations knew existed, or still exists today. What if it’s actually true?
Plato even spoke of the mythical inner world. He mentioned that extremely long and narrow tunnels connect the four corner of our planet. When these are finally connected, Agartha would stand with a magical ruler holding the throne.
But many similar accounts are present in history. If we go back to the year 50AD, we will discover that a Roman author by the name of Pliny the Elder stated that the ancient Atlantean civilization fled to the Himalayas after catastrophic events swiped over their capital city. Eventually, the Atlantean’s dug into our planet where they currently live, far away from ‘modern’ civilization.
However, if we look towards the 20th and 21st century, we will discover a number of authors who have made shocking claims in regards to the Hollow Earth theory. After proposing a new theory of the birth of our planet, Russian Physicist Fedor Nevolin became famous for suggesting that the Earth is hollow and most likely has a smaller Sun in the center. The Sun’s energy is said to penetrate through the holes in the Poles and accumulates in the center, making it possible for life to flourish inside our planet.
But perhaps the most famous accounts ‘offering’ conclusive evidence that there is a world inside our planet come from the famous Byrd expeditions.
Books like Worlds beyond the Poles by Amadeo Giannini claimed that Byrd had not flown over the Pole but inwardly through large holes leading into the Earth. Ray Palmer, mainly based on the book by Giannini, introduced his theory in the December 1959 issue of its magazine and obtained very positive results from the audience because of his theories and ideas regarding the Hollow Earth theory.
It is noteworthy to mention that according to Giannini and Palmer, during Vice Admiral Byrd’s alleged flight over the North Pole in 1947, Admiral Byrd radioed that he saw beneath him, not snow, but areas of land with mountains, forests, vegetation, lakes and rivers and in the undergrowth, a strange animal that looked like a mammoth.
It is said (citation needed) that in January of 1956, after leading an expedition to Antarctica, Admiral Byrd had stated that his expedition had explored 3,700 km beyond the South Pole and also just before his death, Byrd had said there existed a land beyond the Pole that was “an enchanted continent in the sky, a permanent mystery of Earth.” That land, according to other theories, was the legendary Rainbow City, home to a fabulous lost civilization.
But much before Byrd and others spoke of a world inside our planet, ancient civilizations had oral, and written legends that suggest such ’emptiness’ inside of our planet might actually exist.
The Macuxi Indians are indigenous people who live in the Amazon, in countries such as Brazil, Guyana, and Venezuela. According to their legends, they are the descendants of the Sun’s children, the creator of Fire and disease and the protectors of the “inner Earth.” Their oral legends speak of an entrance into Earth. Until the year 1907, the Macuxies would enter some sort of cavern, and travel from 13 to 15 days until they reached the interior. It is there, “at the other side of the world, in the inner Earth” is where the Giants live, creatures that have around 3-4 meters in height.
However, there are more ‘stories’ that speak of similar events. The Babylonian hero Gilgamesh visited his ancestor Utnapishtim in the bowels of the earth; in Greek mythology, Orpheus tries to rescue Eurydice from the underground hell; it was said that the Pharaohs of Egypt communicated with the underworld, which could be accessed via secret tunnels hidden in the pyramids; and Buddhists believed (and still believe) that millions of people live in Agharta, an underground paradise ruled by the king of the world. Where did all of these legends originate from?
Interestingly, in ‘modern’ times, several interesting authors have made similar claims. For example. Leonard Euler, a mathematical genius of the eighteenth century, concluded that the Earth was hollow, containing a central sun and was inhabited. Dr. Edmund Halley, discoverer of Comet Halley and Royal Astronomer of England also believed that the Earth was hollow on the inside with three “Floors”.
In an extremely interesting interview with Coast To Coast AM, author and researchers David Wilcock stated that an alliance of ancient civilizations is living inside the planet. These ancient civilizations have been calling the inner Earth their home for long periods of time, and they are about the reveal themselves to the world.
Wilcock states that based on his research, it seems as if these cavities are utilized so that advanced civilizations have a place they can live while looking out for everything that happens on the ‘outer Earth,’ the surface of the planet.
Recent studies have discovered interesting details about what’s located inside of our planet.
According to scientists, there is a large ocean of water located inside the mantle of our planet. They point out that this gigantic tank of water could fill the oceans on our planet up to three times.
Researchers also indicate that the water located on the surface of our planet came not from space, but from within the planet itself, as part of “complete water cycle on the planet”.
In addition to the water found inside of our planet, researchers have discovered an ‘unknown’ oxygen sourcedeep below the surface of our planet. This discovery seems to point towards the existence of a hitherto unknown oxygen source believed to be located somewhere in the lower mantle of our planet.
The mysterious source of oxygen is believed to be so enormous, that it can influence the climate on our planet. The team of researchers led by Dr. Elena Bykova from the University of Bayreuth reported the results in the scientific journal nature Communications.
Are legends just legends? Myths only fictional accounts? Or is there something to the countless claims that have been formulated throughout the years which suggest there is a gigantic world waiting to be explored beneath the surface of our planet.

TREASURE HUNTERS Two spacecraft, Hayabusa2 (left) and OSIRIS-REx (right), began exploring two ancient asteroids in 2018. Both craft are expected to pick up samples of their respective rocks and carry them to Earth.
HAYABUSA2: DLR (CC BY 3.0); OSIRIS-REX: CONCEPTUAL IMAGE LAB/NASA’S GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER
Shogo Tachibana greeted asteroid Ryugu with dread.
The cosmochemist with the University of Tokyo had spent 10 years helping to design a mission to Ryugu’s surface. To touch down safely, the spacecraft, Hayabusa2, needs to find broad, flat stretches of fine-grained dust on the asteroid. But on June 27, whenHayabusa2 finally reached its targetafter a three-and-a-half-year journey (SN Online: 6/27/18), Tachibana got a rude awakening: Ryugu is covered in boulders. Big ones.
“We cannot find a 100 percent safe place to touch down,” Tachibana says. “It seems to be a very dangerous place.”
If Hayabusa2 can deal with the boulders — and any other challenges that arise — it will become only the second spacecraft to bring a piece of an asteroid back to Earth. And the mission will answer questions that its predecessor couldn’t. The original Hayabusa mission visited a sand- and rock-covered asteroid called Itokawa in 2005. But Itokawa has the wrong chemical makeup to address big questions about the origin of life that Ryugu, which is carbon-rich, is well suited for. And Hayabusa suffered a series of calamities that caused it to return to Earth several years late, with less than 2,000 grains of precious asteroid dust.
Tachibana and colleagues from the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA, are counting on Haybusa2 to return bits of Ryugu’s surface to Earth in 2020. And if a daring plan to blow a crater into the asteroid works, the spacecraft will get some subsurface grains as well.
A sister project from NASA, the OSIRIS-REx mission, arrived at an asteroid called Bennu in December to bring samples back in 2023 (SN Online: 12/3/18).
The two spacecraft face daunting challenges. The probes must investigate objects that have so little gravity that sunlight can knock them off their orbits. If the probes manage to pick up samples, the spacecraft must keep the dust pristine during the trip back to Earth. To get the most out of the missions, the Japanese and American teams are trying to work together across cultural and bureaucratic divides.
New worlds
Ryugu and Bennu are small targets. Ryugu’s polar diameter is about 880 meters and Bennu’s is about 510 meters (left). Both asteroids orbit the sun on trajectories that sometimes take them relatively close to Earth (right).

But the uncertainties and anxiety are worth it. Asteroids like Ryugu and Bennu are among the oldest and most intriguing objects in the solar system. They could hold the keys to some of the most pressing planetary questions: What came before the planets? What are the origins of life? And how much of a threat do asteroids pose to life on Earth today?
Of course, planetary scientists already have tens of thousands of asteroid pieces to study. Such meteorites fall to Earth in the hundreds each year, offering researchers plenty of material to slice, grind and examine for clues to the solar system’s history.
Dante Lauretta of the University of Arizona in Tucson, the principal investigator of OSIRIS-REx, spent the first part of his career trying to coax meteorites into telling him whether molecules necessary for life — such as nucleic acids, amino acids and phosphorus, which are structural components of DNA — could have originated inside carbon-rich asteroids like Ryugu or Bennu.
Carbon-rich asteroids are thought to be mostly unchanged since their formation at least 4.6 billion years ago, which makes them perfect time capsules. A few grains of such an asteroid could reveal what the early solar system was made of.
Remote studies of asteroids also suggest that the raw ingredients for life, and maybe even the chemical processes that are necessary for life to begin, might have been present on carbon-rich asteroids even before the planets were done growing.
“We think an asteroid like this one may have delivered this material to the surface of the early Earth, providing seeds or building blocks of life,” Lauretta says. “If we can show the precursors [of life] started before the planet, I think the probability that there’s life elsewhere in the solar system goes way up.”
Studying meteorites to explore this notion falls short on two fronts, however: It’s hard to tell where they come from, and they’re contaminated. As soon as a space rock hits Earth’s atmosphere, it starts accumulating signs of Earth life. Therefore, any intriguing organic compounds in a meteorite could be from Earth, not native to the asteroid. There’s no way to tell.
“We needed samples of a carbon-rich asteroid to really answer the questions I was into,” Lauretta says.
A rare breed
Of more than 500,000 asteroids in the solar system, Ryugu and Bennu are two of only five with the right orbits, sizes and compositions for a sample-return mission.

Break me off a piece
Getting to the origins of the solar system, and maybe life’s beginnings, makes bringing clean, carefully selected samples to earthly labs crucial. But spacecraft can’t just dig in with a shovel. There’s no grabbing a rock with a claw like in an arcade game. The asteroids are so tiny — Ryugu is about 880 meters from pole to pole and Bennu is about 510 meters — and their gravity is so weak that reaching out and grabbing something could push the spacecraft off course with the asteroid.
So instead of scooping or grabbing, the spacecraft will reach out with proboscis-like tubes, either touching down briefly or hovering above the surface. This tricky endeavor has been attempted only once before — and it was almost a disaster.
Drop and dodge
To sample Ryugu below the surface, Hayabusa2 will launch a projectile to blast open a crater, then take a lap around the asteroid to avoid damage. The spacecraft will then come close to the new hole in the ground and shoot a small bullet from its sampling horn. The bullet will splash on the surface, sending dust and sand into a catcher in the upper part of the horn.

The first Hayabusa spacecraft was supposed to use its three reaction wheels to stabilize itself as it hovered near Itokawa’s surface, stretched out a collection tube to touch the surface and fired a small bullet down the tube to stir up dust particles. Those dust grains would float up the tube into a sterile chamber for storage on the trip back to Earth.
Almost everything went wrong. Before Hayabusa even got to the asteroid, the biggest solar flare ever recorded damaged the spacecraft’s solar panels and one of its engines, slowing down the spacecraft and delaying its asteroid rendezvous by three months.
Once at Itokawa, two of the craft’s reaction wheels failed, making it hard for the craft to keep an even keel. A companion rover released by Hayabusa that was meant to land on Itokawa’s surface and measure the asteroid’s composition missed its mark and floated into space. The dust-stirring bullet didn’t fire, so it was initially unclear if the craft got any samples at all. And all four of the probe’s engines failed one by one on the return journey, forcing Hayabusa to take a lengthy detour home.
“It had lots of serious problems,” says JAXA’s Makoto Yoshikawa, a mission manager on both Hayabusa and Hayabusa2.
For all of Hayabusa’s calamities, the mission’s tale had a happy ending. Against all odds, the spacecraft returned to Earth in 2010 (SN Online: 6/14/10), having grabbed 1,534 grains of Itokawa.
Planners of the new mission learned from the original mission’s mishaps. Hayabusa2 has four reaction wheels, souped-up engines and a beefier communication system that will send back much more data to help scientists plan the sample collection. The collection tube has teeth at its mouth to lift pebbles into the tube even if the bullet doesn’t fire. And in September, Hayabusa2 successfully dropped three small landers on Ryugu’s surface to gather data on the asteroid’s composition, temperature and magnetic properties (SN Online: 9/24/18).
With similar caution, when OSIRIS-REx goes in to gather a sample from Bennu, it will touch the asteroid only briefly. “It’s like five seconds of contact,” Lauretta says. “Get the sample and then get out of there.”
KEEP IT CLEAN OSIRIS-REx’s sampler, called the Touch-and-Go Sample Acquisition Mechanism, or TAGSAM (photographed in a clean room), has a head on an arm that extends.
LOCKHEED MARTIN
The spacecraft’s Touch-And-Go Sample Acquisition Mechanism, TAGSAM, has a nitrogen jet at the end of a robotic arm. When the arm touches Bennu’s surface, it will release a burst of nitrogen gas to ruffle the surface just enough to blow particles into the sample collector. As a bonus, the sample collector’s head is covered in stainless steel Velcro-like pads that can pick up surface dust on contact.
The remote-reach strategy avoids the hassle of anchoring to the asteroid, but presents its own problem: No one knows how fine-grained dust behaves when blown around in low gravity. That open question worries engineers. “What actually happens when you contact the surface of an asteroid is an unknown area of physics,” Lauretta says. “I think [the surface] is going to be like a fluid. It’s a truly alien landscape.”
IN AND OUT TAGSAM's arm allows surface contact without the spacecraft landing on the asteroid. During five seconds of contact, a jet of nitrogen gas will agitate Bennu’s surface to loosen dust for collection. Surface contact pads will also collect fine-grained material. Once collection is done, the TAGSAM head will move into a capsule where it’s protected from contamination during the trip back to Earth.
The road to Ryugu
When Hayabusa returned, planetary scientist Michelle Thompson of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., studied the Itokawa grains. Having such a limited supply forced scientists to get the most out of the samples. The first chapter of Thompson’s Ph.D. dissertation was written about a single Itokawa particle that measured 50 micrometers across.
“We still got some amazing science out of those particles,” she says. Those grains proved that most of the meteorites on Earth come from stony, carbon-poor asteroids like Itokawa, not carbon-bearing ones like Ryugu and Bennu (SN Online: 8/25/11). “In the context of [Hayabusa’s] problems, it’s incredible the amount of data that came out of that mission,” Thompson says.
While Hayabusa was floundering in space in 2006, Yoshikawa’s team was already suggesting that JAXA fly a follow-up mission. By then, Yoshikawa had set his sights on an even more attractive asteroid, Ryugu.
JAXA sent a spacecraft to Itokawa because it was easy to reach, not because it was scientifically special. But as a carbon-rich asteroid, Ryugu is thought to consist of the most ancient, pristine material in the solar system.
Ryugu’s name even references a time capsule from a Japanese folktale, in which the hero Urashima Taro retrieves a box from a dragon-guarded castle called Ryugu at the bottom of the sea. When the hero returns to the surface, he finds that 300 years have passed. When he opens the box, he becomes an old man, because the box contained all of that elapsed time.
Yoshikawa and his colleagues proposed the mission every year and were rebuffed each time — until Hayabusa came home in 2010.
The spacecraft’s return was lauded in Japan, Yoshikawa says. “Japanese people were very surprised to see that Hayabusa really came to the Earth.” An editorial in the Japan Times deemed the spacecraft a “high achiever,” and called for more funding for JAXA and space research.
In May 2011, the Japanese government approved the Hayabusa2 mission. Tachibana, Yoshikawa and the rest of the JAXA team aimed for the next launch window, in 2014.
Friendly competition
Like Hayabusa2, OSIRIS-REx was rejected multiple times before NASA selected it for flight, also in May 2011. Because of Bennu’s orbit, the next launch opportunity to reach the asteroid wasn’t until September 2016. That two-year gap between JAXA’s and NASA’s launches inspired some friendly competition between the teams.
Years in the making
The Hayabusa2 and OSIRIS-REx missions grew up almost simultaneously on opposite sides of the world. The close timing of the Japanese and U.S. missions means the two can learn from each other.

“Of course, we are good friends and we want to have a good relation,” Tachibana says. “But at the same time we are rivals.” OSIRIS-REx is bigger than Hayabusa2 and plans to collect up to 20,000 times as much asteroid dust — up to two kilograms, in the best-case scenario, compared with Hayabusa2’s total of 100 milligrams. To compete, Hayabusa2’s team set out to do everything first, Tachibana says.
“They were concerned we were going to overshadow them,” Lauretta says. The first few meetings between the teams were tense, he recalls. But both groups felt it was best to work together.
“This is the first time since Apollo … that two sample-return missions are going to the same kind of target,” Tachibana says. “The U.S. and the Soviet Union could not talk to each other.” It was the middle of the Cold War. “This time we can talk to each other.”
In November 2014, NASA and JAXA signed a memorandum promising to share data, software and samples. JAXA will give 10 percent of its Ryugu sample to NASA, and NASA will give 0.5 percent of the larger Bennu sample to JAXA.
Still, the two space agencies don’t align on everything. “Hayabusa2 and OSIRIS-REx have completely different philosophies of sampling,” says cosmochemist Keiko Nakamura-Messenger of NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. She oversees the sample site selection for OSIRIS-REx and will be in charge of storing the samples.
Take the mission timelines: OSIRIS-REx will spend more than a year mapping Bennu in detail. Its suite of science instruments, including three cameras, a laser altimeter and three spectrometers, will figure out the asteroid’s composition all over the surface before the team chooses the mission’s sole sampling site.
Hayabusa2 scientists, on the other hand, chose the first of three sampling sites in August, less than two months after the spacecraft arrived at Ryugu (SN Online: 8/23/18). Originally the team planned to take its first sample in October, but the boulders proved so difficult that sampling was pushed to February 2019 at the earliest.
Hayabusa2 will sample three sites to capture as much of the asteroid’s mineral diversity as possible. One of the samples will come from within a several-meter-wide crater that doesn’t yet exist. The spacecraft will create the hole by firing a two-kilogram copper projectile at the asteroid, then hide on the other side of Ryugu to avoid debris when the projectile hits. The aim is to see if the asteroid’s interior is different from the surface.
It’s hard to imagine NASA approving such a crazy maneuver, says Nakamura-Messenger, who grew up in Japan. It’s too risky. “The NASA way, the American way, is: The success rate has to be really high,” she says. But she’s rooting for Hayabusa2’s bold moves.
“In my heart, I’m Japanese,” she says. “Therefore, I’m like, ‘Go for it!’ ”
Precious dust
Hayabusa2 aims to gather 0.1 grams of dust from Ryugu, the weight of about three grains of rice. OSIRIS-REx will try to get up to 2,000 grams of Bennu’s surface, about the weight of a small Chihuahua.

Bound for Bennu
Still, Ryugu’s surprise boulder field made Lauretta, Nakamura-Messenger and the rest of the OSIRIS-REx team nervous about Bennu.
“I’ve been lying awake at night anticipating Bennu,” Lauretta says. “It’s fascinating and frightening all at once.”
Fitting with NASA’s cautious approach, the OSIRIS-REx team knew a lot more about Bennu than JAXA knew about Ryugu before the missions launched. Bennu came close enough to Earth in 1999, 2005 and 2011 for radio telescopes to map the asteroid’s shape (though not close enough to reveal much detail).
“We compiled the most comprehensive database from astronomy for any asteroid in the solar system,” Lauretta says of the team’s prework on Bennu.
Those radio measurements allowed researchers to see how sunlight nudges the asteroid on its orbit, a phenomenon called the Yarkovsky effect. As asteroids tumble through space, they absorb sunlight on one side and re-emit that energy as heat later, when that side faces away from the sun. The force of that radiating heat is enough to push the asteroid around, making it difficult to predict the asteroid’s orbit over the long term.
The Yarkovsky effect calculation yielded a worrying prediction: Bennu has a 1 in 2,700 chance of hitting Earth in the late 22nd century, one of the highest probabilities of any known asteroid.
HAZARD MAP OSIRIS-REx took this mosaic image of Bennu in early December and has seen signs of liquid water in the asteroid’s past.
UNIV. OF ARIZONA, NASA’S GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER
That forecast makes OSIRIS-REx’s mission even more urgent. Testing the returned samples will give scientists a better understanding of how Bennu’s surface material absorbs and emits heat. That information will sharpen the researchers’ predictions of where the asteroid will go, and help inform future missions to deflect asteroids that come too close to Earth.
That’s only if Bennu is smooth enough for the spacecraft to get a sample. The first images takenas OSIRIS-REx approached Bennu on December 3 didn’t do much to quell the team’s fears. With the naked eye, Bennu seems to have about as many boulders as Ryugu, maybe a little fewer, says planetary scientist Kevin Walsh of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colo.
“Even if we convince ourselves that there’s a site that’s boulder free, there’s still a chance it could change later on. So we’ll have to see,” says Walsh, who presented an early comparison of Bennu and Ryugu on December 11 at a Washington, D.C., meeting of the American Geophysical Union. “We have plenty of tools to find the places with the least amount of hazards, even if we can’t find a place that’s completely free of them.”
That is a relief, Nakamura-Messenger says. But every mission so far has surprised her.
“I don’t make wild guesses anymore,” she says. “Nature is wilder.”
This article appears in the January 19, 2019 issue of Science News with the headline, "Cosmic collectors: Twin quests aim to grab some asteroid dust and bring it to Earth."
AREA 51 ENGINEER BREAKS HIS SILENCE: “THERE IS AN EXTRATERRESTRIAL RACE WORKING WITH US”
For a long time, Area 51 has been the focus of different conspiracy theories, especially because it is highly secret and hidden so that only people with official access can reach it. However, recently one of the biggest scandals involving this place came to light, especially because it was an engineer who worked in Area 51 that provided classified information. And although it seems incredible, many experts in the field agree that the information has all the veracity.
What happens in Area 51?
Testimonials that directly involve this place have been constantly revealed by people who had access, as the fact that in this place works with amazing technology to discover all kinds of mysteries in the universe that have to do mainly with aliens . It is something that, obviously, has resulted in endless conspiracy theories.
In addition, it has also been claimed that in this place some experiments have been done that nobody will ever know, in which they have been able to create hybrids between reptiles and humans. Basically, that’s where all kinds of information came from.
It is what we call “the jewel in the crown” of the conspiracy cases of the last 3 decades. And, if we talk about Area 51, we will talk about some secret and top secret government case that, year after year, dissipates like a “dropper”.
A former engineer from Area 51
However, recently it was discovered in video of an engineer who worked in Area 51 called Bill Uhouse, in which he states that he received the help of an alien to know how to handle a flying saucer. It is something that bristles the skin to anyone, and that, probably, is the most amazing revelation that has been discovered in these years. The engineer left this world in 2009, but not before revealing details as juicy as the name of the “supposed” engineer’s assistant: JRod.
This is a representation made by Ohouse himself of his “coworker”:
The truth is that, of all the names that might sound alien, sincerely, this is the one that least sounds like an extraterrestrial.
Among the secrets that Ohouse allegedly revealed, we can highlight the following:
The existence of massive underground systems with experimental laboratories and reverse engineering workshops. Several races of humanoids working side by side with our engineers. The revelation of the hybrid race of Nordic extraterrestrials, of which we already echoed on some occasion in our blog. And hybrids of human reptiloids developed in these underground laboratories.
Interesting right? Well here is not the thing, because, one of the last things that revealed the ill-fated Ohouse, was the treaty signed by the same Eisenhower to start an “exchange” friendly with the extraterrestrials between technologies. Which brings us to the following question: What can we offer to them in this exchange? Human technology, no, of course.
Incredible secrets
Most likely, for the rest of our lives, people who already know of the existence of extraterrestrials, or that their UFOs are completely real and continue to hide it indefinitely, will continue in their thirteenths and it is something very disturbing. what they win or are plotting to want to hide this kind of discoveries from the rest of humanity. Why?
“Beings From the Previous Eon” –Sir Roger Penrose and Joe Rogan: Is Alien Life Out There?
In the art world, “pentimento,” an alteration, an overlay on a painting, hides evidence of traces of a previous work. In a similar vein, British physicist Sir Roger Penrose argues that extinct universes exist that were filled with ghost black holes that are hidden, embedded in the Cosmic Microwave Background map, and may have harbored alien civilizations from an eon that preceded the Big Bang.
“The anatomies we are seeing in Australopithecus sediba are forcing us to reassess the pathway by which we became human.”
In 2008, two partial skeletons were discovered at the fossil site of Malapa in South Africa – the site better known as the Cradle of Humankind for containing a large number of some of the oldest hominin fossils ever found. After ten years of careful study, a new report announces that not only are the two skeletons of the same hominin species, that species is highly likely to be the proverbial ‘missing link’ – the transitional species that became the first humans. If it’s true, that transition occurred much later in history than previously thought.
“The first fossil of Au. Sediba was discovered by Matthew Berger, then a nine-year-old, who happened to stop and examine the rock he tripped over while following his dog Tau away from the Malapa pit.”
The study, published in a special edition of Paleoanthropology, begins with the accidental discovery of the remains that would make a great opening scene for the movie. After that, anthropologists and co-authors Scott Williams, Jeremy DeSilva and Darryl De Ruiter dig into what Berger and his dog dug up – partial skeletons that are far more complete than ‘Lucy’, the 3.2 million-year-old Australopithecus afarensis skeleton discovered in Ethiopia in 1974.
A depiction of how Lucy might have looked.
After dating them to between 1.95 and 1.78 million years ago, the researchers studied their most missing-linkish traits – hands and feet that clearly indicated Australopithecus (which means “southern ape”) sediba were very adept tree climbers. Along with short foot bones not suitable for walking and a small brain, these showed Au. sediba was similar to Lucy. However, their hands had long opposable thumbs suitable for using tools and their teeth showed a more advanced diet than little Lucy consumed. Those traits put them closer to Homo habilis(“handy man”), the prehistoric, walking tool-user discovered in Tanzania who lived between 2.1 and 1.5 million years ago.
A depiction of how Homo habilis might have looked.
“Our findings challenge a traditional, linear view of evolution. It was once thought that a fossil species a million years younger than Lucy would surely look more human-like. For some anatomies of Australopithecus sediba, like the knee, that is true. But, for others, like the foot, it is not. Instead, what we’re witnessing here are parallel lineages, illustrating how different hominin experiments were unfolding early in our complex evolutionary history.”
Is the missing link no longer missing? This extensive study – nine papers by leading anthropologists, each one focusing on a single body part of Au. sediba – seems to indicate that, while this is definitely a ‘found’ missing link, there are more yet to be discovered. Like its name, the theory of evolution is destined to keep evolving.
One more thing. The origin story of the Au. sediba mentions the name of the boy AND his pet dog. Isn’t it time we make our ground-sniffing, bone-digging canine assistants honorary anthropologists?
Mysterious Sphere emits beam of light towards the ground in Edmond, Oklahoma
On January 15, 2019 the witness was driving on the highway near Edmond, Oklahoma when he saw a large sphere that appeared above the tree line near power lines and it was beaming something down.
The eerie light was so bright he could not see the object but it had a bluefish white beam emitting towards the ground as though it was beaming something down or collecting something.
Despite he was moving fast he was able take three images with his iPhone Gs which he has submitted to Mufon for further investigation.
Since the incident is very mysterious, we can only guess what the object might be that the driver has photographed.

You have probably heard of crop circles, but did you know there areice circlestoo? Every so often, ice circles – or actually ice disks – are reported. They seem quite bizarre, although they are known to form naturally – no aliens needed.
Now, a new one has been found on the Presumpscot River in Westbrook, Maine. The “spinning” (actually slowly rotating) disk is huge – about 300 feet (100 meters) in size – making it one of the largest, if not the largest, one on record. The phenomenon was first reported on January 16 and has attracted thousands of onlookers. As one witness exclaimed:
It’s the moon in the river. Pretty cool!
According to city councilor Gary Rairdon:
I have not seen anything like this. I’ve lived probably 52 years of my life in Westbrook. It’s almost like Mother Nature’s merry-go-round.

Below is a time-lapse video showing the rotation of the ice disk (via Doug Bertlesman):
The first photos of the ice disk were taken by a drone and now have attracted world-wide interest and curiosity. The rough surface of the disk does sort of make it look like the moon, as an aesthetic bonus.
It’s a beautiful, spectacular thing. It’s just a beautiful aesthetic phenomenon. It’s not unprecedented, but it does seem to be unusually large. There was a modest crowd and a steady flux of people coming and going, taking pictures and just enjoying the whole thing. It had a nice community feel to it.
But how did this ice disk – and others like it – form?
It’s actually a rather well-known natural phenomenon, usually found in spots where there is a circular current in a river or stream that creates a whirlpool effect. Random eddies in water tend to follow a circular route. In winter, ice crystals in this slower-moving water can gradually coalesce to form a circular “mat” of ice. The current keeps the ice disk in place as it slowly rotates. As the disk turns, it bumps up against the shoreline or other chunks of ice and is essentially “lathed down” until it is round. The result is an ice disk that can be surprisingly circular and smooth-edged.
As Ryan Breton, a meteorologist at News Center in Maine, added:
The river has different depths. On the right side where there isn’t any ice it’s a faster current. On the left side, where the ice started to form it’s a little shallower, and that ice started to form into a circle that completely changed around the current of the entire river.
Illustration of a historical account of an ice disk – on the Mianus River near Bedford, N.Y. in 1895. Image via Scientific American.
The ice disk has even become popular with the local ducks, said Rob Mitchell, who owns a nearby office building:
There were ducks sitting on it. The ducks were rotating on this big Lazy Susan. It was a big duck-go-round.
Similar ice disks have been seen before, although typically smaller than this new one in Maine. Most are usually around 30 feet or so in diameter, as compared to this 300-foot monster. There is even an article in an 1895 Scientific American that quotes a reader who described “a revolving ice cake” on the Mianus River near Bedford, N.Y.
Bottom line: The Maine ice disk is an exquisite example of how nature can produce phenomena that at first glance almost seem other-worldly – and can leave the imagination spinning.
US Government Releases Details On Top Secret UFO Investigation Project
In response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request by Steven Aftergood, director of the Federation of American Scientists’ Project onGovernmentSecrecy, the Defence Intelligence Agency released a list of 38 research titles they have been investigating and pursuing. Among others, The Department of Defense was found to have been funding research on wormholes, invisibility cloaking, and “the manipulation of extra dimensions” under its shadowy Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, which was first described in 2017 by the New York Times and the Washington Post.
What exactly are these strange titles?
Eric W. Davis of EarthTech led a research topic entitled “Traversable Wormholes, Stargates, and Negative Energy, ” which was described as a facility that explored the forefront reaches of science and engineering, with an interest in theories of spacetime, studies of the quantum vacuum, and also the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.
A second project on the list named “Invisibility Cloaking” which was led by a German scientist called Ulf Leonhardt, who is a professor at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. Leonhardt’s research is concerned with the science surrounding theoretical quantum optics, and in 2006 his work on theoretically creating an invisible hole in space, inside which objects can be hidden was cited by Nature, giving some more exposure of his work.
Another strange title, “Warp Drive, Dark Energy, and the Manipulation of Extra Dimensions, ” was attributed to a theoretical physicist called Richard Obousy, who is the director of the nonprofit Icarus Interstellar, which claims to be “researching technologies that will enable breakthroughs in interstellar travel.” In 2009, Obousy was credited by Gizmodo for creating a warship design that was both scientifically accurate and also one that could hypothetically be propelled through space by manipulating dark energy.
When did the public discover this organization?
Luis Elizondo, who was a military intelligence official that managed the operation for almost seven years, gave the first hints about the program’s existence. When Elizondo resigned, he claimed there was footage of UFO’s coming into contact with fighter jets and he requested that these extraterrestrial encounters be made public. The videos were subsequently published by the New York Times and the Washington Post. At the time, Reid sought to tighten security around the program’s discoveries. Eventually, though, that didn't matter due to this release of all the new information.
The agency claims the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program was shut down due to a lack of funding, although Elizondo said it continued to investigate UFO sightings, so there are mixed reports.
The Future
It is unclear what will happen with the organization and its funding now that all its research objectives have been revealed. There is a real possibility it will continue as there is still so much to learn from outer space and time itself. There is also the possibility it will shut down or be moved without it being public knowledge. If the US government has been hiding this for such a long time, it really begs the question - what else have they been hiding?
Fascinating: These 7 predictions by sci-fi authors have really come true
Science fiction has inspired people for centuries. However curious their authors' view of the distant future may be, their fantastic visions often come true.
Whether Jules Verne, Aldous Huxley, Gene Roddenberry or George Lucas - they all have one thing in common: they open up a glimpse of the technology of the future that has already become reality or is at least about to become so.
#1 The moon landing
104 years before the first man would set foot on the moon, Jules Verne published his idea of landing on the moon. The novel "From Earth to Moon" from 1865 is about three Americans who take off with a spaceship into space and land on the moon.
#2 The communicator from "Star Trek"
In 1966, the famous communication device from Star Trek was presented to the public for the first time. What seemed revolutionary at the time is now reminiscent of a folding mobile phone.
Although engineers were already working on mobile phone technology in the 1960s, it took Motorola until 1973 to present the world's first mobile phone.
Ten years later, in 1983, the then heavy, large and expensive devices came onto the market. However, the world had to wait another six years for the really first clamshell mobile phone. The device, which was then released, came very close to the Star Trek communicator.
#3 The Iron Man Suit
Ever since it first appeared in the Iron Man comics, Tony Stark's suit has been a legend. Although nobody will be flying around in such high-tech wonders in the near future, the US military is working under the name "Talos" on a technology that combines some of the features of the Iron Man suit.
In addition, there are hobby craftsmen like Richard Browning, who has made his very own flight suit in the style of Iron Man.
#4 Electrically powered submarines
Jules Verne, the second: In his novel "20,000 Miles Under the Sea" from 1870, the Sci Fi author impressively describes a submarine that is completely powered by electricity. At that time, however, such monsters functioned exclusively mechanically.
An MIT historian decades later confirmed to National Geographic that Verne's fictional submarine "Nautilus" would hardly differ from today's watercraft.
#5 Bluetooth headset
In "Fahrenehit 451" of 1953, Sci-Fi writer Ray Bradbury wrote about "shells" and "thimble-sized radios" that are very similar to today's Bluetooth headphones. Today Apple AirPods are used by millions of people every day.
According to Bradbury, his devices "created an electronic ocean of sounds, music, and conversation that washed away on the beach of your waking consciousness.
#6 The atomic bomb
H.G. Wells, author of "The Liberated World", visioned in 1914 in his novel of a grenade made of uranium that "exploded indefinitely". Three decades later, these bombs were dropped on Japan and cost the lives of countless people.
Wells himself described a drop from an airplane, as was the case during the Second World War. Nevertheless, experts say that the author's invented atomic bombs differed significantly from their very real counterparts. They exploded continuously for several days, weeks or months.
#7 Driving robot cars
Cars with "robot brains" said Isaac Asimov, father of the robot laws, already in 1964 before, after he had visited the world exhibition at that time.
More than 50 years later, companies such as Waymo, Tesla, Apple, and others are trying to create autonomous vehicles that do without the driver's help. Many of them want to bring their vehicles onto the roads by 2030.
Conclusion: Science fiction is real
It is a fascinating thought that people can think up technological developments that will become reality decades later. However, we do not know to what extent this has influenced subsequent generations and has led to the implementation of certain concepts.
IN BEELD. Zo mooi was de totale maansverduistering - HLN.be - PART I
#bloedmaan#Delftlandenview#CanonEOS70D#nofilter
If you name your kid “Killer,” you should be prepared to accept the consequences … or at least his therapy bills (and if Killer’s a she, you need help as well). So it should come as no surprise that an asteroid named for an ancient Egyptian god of destruction, darkness and evil (apparently, in the case of asteroids, those are not redundant) is actually being predicted to cause destruction, darkness and evil. Not only that, the estimated time of arrival is a mere few decades from now. Will there be time to send a force of good, light and wholesomeness (with a nuclear warhead, of course) to stop it?
“The [asteroid’s] approach causes a significant scattering of possible trajectories, among them trajectories indicating convergence in 2051. Further orbital resonance reentries contain a great number (about one hundred) possible collisions between Apophis and the Earth, the most dangerous of them in 2068.”
While you may not be concerned about 99942 Apophis, Russian scientists are. In a new report to be presented at the 43rd Korolev Readings on Cosmonautics (an annual scientific forum dedicated to the memory of Sergei Korolev – a rocket engineer considered to be the Soviet Union’s Robert Goddard and the father of practical astronautics), researchers from St. Petersburg State University are predicting Apophis will come within 16 million km (10 million miles) of Earth in 2044, within 760,000 km (472,000 miles) in 2051, within five million km (3.1 million miles) in 2060, and within 100,000 km (62, 000 miles) in 2068. (For reference, the Moon is 385,000.6 km (239,228.3 mile) from Earth).
Apophis’ hitting the keyhole in 2029
That doesn’t sound so bad, right? It gets worse, according to Sputnik News, (interesting coincidence — Sergei Korolev worked on Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite.) Apophis is also making a very close pass by Earth in 2029 (within 37,600km (23,363 miles) and that one will determine if and when the asteroid will hit the Earth on a future (and last) trip. That’s when Apophis could pass through a tiny gravitational keyhole which would alter its trajectory enough to cause a collision on the future pass in 2036.
Yes, we’ve heard about this many times before since it was discovered in 2004 (when initial observers predicted a 2.7% chance that it would hit the in 2029. Subsequent revisions in the calculations eliminated the probability for a hit in 2029 but came up with the keyhole possibility instead. What kind of impact would this 350 meter (1,150 feet) diameter rock have? The Sentry Risk Table estimates that Apophis would make atmospheric entry with 750 megatons of kinetic energy. For comparisons, the Siberian Tunguska event in 1908 was in the 3–10 megaton range and the biggest hydrogen bomb ever exploded was around 57 megatons.
While anti-conspiracists say the odds of an Apophis hit are so low that there’s no need to even be talking about it, Russians scientists certainly are, as evidenced by the Korolev Readings presentation. And the “force of good nuke versus evil asteroid” is a real option studied by researchers at Tomsk State University in Siberia. Why are the Siberians so worried? Can asteroid strike twice in the same place? For that matter, why are the Russians? Do they know something we don’t? Or something NASA won’t tell us?
Apophis, the Egyptian god of destruction, is often depicted as a serpent
There seem to be reports monthly of asteroids that pass very close to the Earth without warning. Is it really hand-wringing or fear-mongering to worry about a real asteroid with a known schedule and a distinct possibility of hitting Earth?
Especially one named after the god of destruction?
One of the lesser known aspects of theBob Lazar controversy– a very bizarre aspect, I have to say – is that which suggests he just might have seen an alienentity at Area 51– a live one, no less. A joke? A case of mistaken identity (of what I have no idea at all)? A hoax? A strange case of someone screwing around with Lazar’s mind? The odd story gets very little publicity, but it’s as fascinating as it is downright weird. The issue of aliens – alive, dead or possibly both over at Area 51’s secret S-4 facility – first surfaced from Lazar in the early part of 1989, roughly thirty years ago. When asked about that specific matter by journalist George Knapp, Lazar quickly shot down the question in what was undeniably a very awkward fashion and he chose to change the subject. Later on though, in what was a private, rather than public, interview Lazar opened up a little bit more on the curious claims. What he had to say was brief but amazing – if it’s all true, of course. That, needless to say, is the most important aspect of the story.
According to Lazar’s memories of the strange situation he is said to have found himself in, “I walked down the hallway at one time I was working down there, and there were these doors – the doors that go to the hangar are smaller than the doors in the corridors and have a 9-inch or 12-inch square window with little wires running through it, just about head level. And as I was walking by, I just glanced in and I noticed – at a quick glance – there were two guys in white lab coats, facing me towards the door.”
Lazar then got to what is undeniably the heart of the matter: the two men were said to have been looking down at a small, humanoid figure with long arms. And seemingly talking to it, no less! As you do. Although Lazar has gone on record as saying that he only saw the entity for a second or so, he was in no doubt about what it appeared to be. I say “appeared” because Lazar himself admitted that he suspected this was all some kind of strange set-up. He said of this thought-provoking possibility: “Maybe they stuck a doll in front of these guys and made me walk by it and look at it, just to see what my reaction would be.”
Such a thing is not at all impossible, as the following brief, but notable, comment from Lazar makes clear: “They play so many mind games there [italics mine].” While enthusiastic UFO researchers may dearly want to believe that living aliens are running around and hanging out at Area 51, Lazar’s carefully worded statement suggests that we should exercise a significant amount of restraint on this issue – at least until, or if, further vindication comes along. So far, it has not – to any degree at all. George Knapp, who spent a lot of time trying to secure and figure out the whole story of Bob Lazar, made a thought-provoking statement in a 1993 paper for the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON). It may have a bearing on the issue of how certain elements of the U.S. government – such as counterintelligence and disinformation experts – might be using the UFO issue as a cover for something else, such as a dummy for an alien, we might well suggest. Knapp said in his paper, “Area 51, Bob Lazar, and Disinformation – A Reevaluation“: “Again and again, I have heard self-appointed Groom Lake experts conclude, without any reservations, that the Groom Lake aerial ballet is disinformation, pure theater, a show designed to distract attention away from earthly black projects, or as some sort of exercise in mass psychology.” It’s a paper I recommend to anyone and everyone with an interest in the Area 51 saga; you really should read it.
As all of the above demonstrates, there is a distinct possibility that a great deal of high-strangeness is afoot at Area 51; however, that does not mean UFOs and aliens (dead or alive) are necessarily within its confines. I would be extremelysurprised, and totally amazed, if they were. Maybe, someone wants us to believe that’s what’s going on, but for reasons which are not yet fully understood.
Controversial plans from a Russian firm would see adverts run across the evening sky using hundreds of tiny orbiting satellites.
The ambitious marketing project would beam down luminous slogans and logos from 300 miles (480 kilometres) above the people it is targeting.
StartRocket is a budding company hoping to use Cubesats - briefcase sized spacecrafts - in low-Earth orbit and arranging them in a particular way based on the demands of the paying customer.
They would reflect light from the sun back towards Earth's surface and therefore only be functional when light is available near Earth but not on the surface, such as at dawn and dusk.
Each satellite would have a huge reflective sail which would act as a single pixel within the display.
Not everyone is happy with the plans, however, with critics pointing out the problem of light pollution the scheme will generate.
This may even threaten astronomical research on the ground, it has been claimed.

A Russian firm wants to to put adverts in the sky using hundreds of tiny orbiting satellites. The ambitious marketing project would beam down luminous signs and logos from space from 300 miles (480 kilometres) above the people it is targeting
StartRocket estimates the advert would measure approximately 19 square miles (50 square kilometres).
The advert would theoretically be visible for a total of six minutes at a time and exist three or four times a day.
'We are ruled by brands and events,' project leader Vlad Sitnikov told Futurism.
'The Super Bowl, Coca Cola, Brexit, the Olympics, Mercedes, FIFA, Supreme and the Mexican wall.
'The economy is the blood system of society. Entertainment and advertising are at its heart.
'We will live in space, and humankind will start delivering its culture to space. The more professional and experienced pioneers will make it better for everyone.'

The theory has since caused a significant stir in the astronomical society with many outraged by the prospect of adverts in space.
'It's a threat to the ability to do astronomical research from the ground,' astronomer John Barentine of the International Dark Sky Association told Astronomy.com.
'Every one of those moving blips of light in the night sky is something that can interfere with our ability to collect photons from astronomical sources.'
Space entertainment, as it is being called, is a developing field with many individuals and companies looking to use space for profit.
A Japanese firm launched a satellite which sets the wheels in motion for artificial meteor showers.
China has also toyed with the concept of an artificial moon.
WHAT ARE CUBESATS?
A cubesat is a miniature satellite that has been sent into space.
Nasa defines them as a class of nanosatellites that use a standard size and form factor.
Each unit, or U, is 10cm x 10cm x 10cm (4 in x 4 in x 4 in) and the cubes can be pieced together to create larger structures.
These can include 1.5, 2, 3, 6, and even 12U objects.
They are often made of commercial off the shelf products and are a low-cost option for space exploration.
Cubesats have a variety of functions. The small satellites are intended for low Earth orbit (LEO) where they perform a number of scientific research functions and explore new space technologies.
They were originally developed to teach university students about satellites, CubeSats are now a major commercial technology, providing data on everything from shipping routes to environmental changes.

Remember that image of Carl Sagan holding the “Don’t Forget, No Billboards in Space” sign that’s been bouncing around the internet the past few years? Turns out its fake, but that in no way takes away from the sentiment. Space in many ways is the final frontier, the last piece of untouched, untainted real estate we have on our shrinking, stinking planet. Why ruin it with advertising?
Let’s agree to ignore the massive amounts of orbital pollution surrounding the Earth.
Billboards in space sound objectively horrible to anyone who’s not a reptilian capitalist overlord, which is exactly why a Russian startup with massive amounts of venture capital behind it already has the billboards ready to fill the night sky with flashing neon reminders of the hellish corporate dystopia we’ve found ourselves in. Just wait until They find a way to advertise to us in our dreams.
The real photograph showed Sagan holding one of the plaques sent along with the Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 spacecraft.
Aerospace startup StartRocket wants to launch tiny cube satellites into orbit some 400-500 (~250-300 miles) kilometers above the Earth in order to create massive glowing displays which could be seen from dozens of square kilometers below at a time. The landing page on the company’s website displays an image of stargazers taking in the nightmarish scene of a fake Coca-Cola logo (“Loca-Cola”) floating through the night sky along with the mission statement “Space has to be beautiful. With the best brands, our sky will amaze us every night.” Blech. StartRocket project leader Vlad Sitnikov told Futurism that regardless of what literally everyone else in the world says, he insists his vision is all about bringing “beauty” to the world – in the form of brand names and logos:
We are ruled by brands and events. The economy is the blood system of society. Entertainment and advertising are at its heart. We will live in space, and humankind will start delivering its culture to space. The more professional and experienced pioneers will make it better for everyone.
The company plans on launching their first prototype in 2021, and says their orbital displays could be programmed to display logos at six minute intervals, orbiting a particular location three or four times a day. Start clawing your eyeballs out now; it can take a lot longer than you think.
Tiny cube-shaped satellites called Cubesats are being developed for all sorts of purposes.
Of course, there are huge legal and regulatory hurdles the orbital billboards would face if they ever came to fruition, so it’s unknown if they’ll ever be launched at all. Whew. Still, there is some precedent for orbital “art.” Last year, a New Zealand startup called Rocket Lab shot a cross between a disco ball and a D20 into space, prompting widespread criticism from astronomers. Caleb Scharf, director of astrobiology at Columbia University, wrote in Scientific American that despite being billed as a work of art, the orbital disco ball was merely “another invasion of my personal universe, another flashing item asking for eyeballs, adding that it was “hogging some of that precious resource, the dark night sky, polluting part of the last great wilderness” we have left on Earth. What will Scharf and other astronomers have to say about these garish orbital billboards?
Is it just me, or does this image of one cup on Mars somehow seem worse than the millions of cups currently strewn about the Earth?
I don’t know why anyone would think this one is a good idea. Anyone except for the soulless, money-hungry cacodemons who sit on the boards of the world’s largest advertising firms and multinational corporations, that is. Sure, the night sky might be ruined for everyone else you say, but listen, you commie punk: at least the billboards created a lot of value for the shareholders. What’s more important than that?
Police In Spain Record UFO Near Their Vehicle Watching Them, Jan 20, 2019, Photos, UFO Sighting News
Date of sighting: Jan 20, 2019
Location of sighting: Spain
Source: MUFON #97905
Here is a UFO hovering over a police car in Spain this week. The UFO is cloaked, but was revealed by the flashing blue lights of the police vehicle. The UFO appears to be small, about .5 to 1 meter across. Being so small makes me think that its probably an alien drone device, since our planet cannot support all forms of aliens out there. Our atmosphere is probably toxic and deadly to some species. Also the fact that this UFO is watching the police and recording their activities is amazing.
Hosts Alejandro Rojas and Martin Willis (Open Minds UFO Radio) are joined by author and producer Lee Speigel to review the best UFO news stories of 2018.
2018 was a banner year for UFOs. It could be argued 2018 was the tipping point when UFOs became a serious topic in the mainstream. Some even argue it was the first full year we lived in a post UFO disclosure world. In this episode we review the stories and information that made 2018 so important for the UFO topic.
Avi Loeb, the chair of Harvard’s astronomy department, believes that the peculiar nature of the interstellar object called ‘Oumuamua raises questions about its possible origins.
Courtesy ESA/Hubble, NASA, ESO, M. Kornmesser
On October 19, 2017, astronomers at the University of Hawaii spotted a strange object travelling through our solar system, which they later described as “a red and extremely elongated asteroid.” It was the first interstellar object to be detected within our solar system; the scientists named it ‘Oumuamua, the Hawaiian word for a scout or messenger. The following October, Avi Loeb, the chair of Harvard’s astronomy department, co-wrote a paper (with a Harvard postdoctoral fellow, Shmuel Bialy) that examined ‘Oumuamua’s “peculiar acceleration” and suggested that the object “may be a fully operational probe sent intentionally to Earth’s vicinity by an alien civilization.” Loeb has long been interested in the search for extraterrestrial life, and he recently made further headlines by suggesting that we might communicate with the civilization that sent the probe. “If these beings are peaceful, we could learn a lot from them,” he told Der Spiegel.
I recently spoke by phone with Loeb, who was frustrated that scientists saw ‘Oumuamua too late in its journey to photograph the object. “My motivation for writing the paper is to alert the community to pay a lot more attention to the next visitor,” he told me. During our conversation, which has been edited and condensed for clarity, we discussed why Loeb thinks we need to consider the possibility that ‘Oumuamua was sent by aliens, the dangers of unscientific speculation, and what belief in an advanced extraterrestrial civilization has in common with faith in God.
Your explanation of why ‘Oumuamua might be an interstellar probe may be hard for laypeople to understand. Why might this be the case, beyond the fact that lots of things are possible?
There is a Scientific Americanarticle I wrote where I summarized six strange facts about ‘Oumuamua. The first one is that we didn’t expect this object to exist in the first place. We see the solar system and we can calculate at what rate it ejected rocks during its history. And if we assume all planetary systems around other stars are doing the same thing, we can figure out what the population of interstellar objects should be. That calculation results in a lot of possibilities, but the range is much less than needed to explain the discovery of ‘Oumuamua.
There is another peculiar fact about this object. When you look at all the stars in the vicinity of the sun, they move relative to the sun, the sun moves relative to them, but only one in five hundred stars in that frame is moving as slow as ‘Oumuamua. You would expect that most rocks would move roughly at the speed of the star they came from. If this object came from another star, that star would have to be very special.
What are some of the other strange facts?
When it was discovered, we realized it spins every eight hours, and its brightness changed by at least a factor of ten. The fact that its brightness varies by a factor of ten as it spins means that it is at least ten times longer than it is wide. We don’t have a photo, but, in all the artists’ illustrations that you have seen on the Web, it looks like a cigar. That’s one possibility. But it’s also possible that it’s a pancake-like geometry, and, in fact, that is favored.
What would be the meaning of a pancake-like geometry—
Wait. The most unusual fact about it is that it deviates from an orbit that is shaped purely by the gravitational force of the sun. Usually, in the case of comets, such a deviation is caused by the evaporation of ice on the surface of the comet, creating gases that push the comet, like the rocket effect. That’s what comets show: a cometary tail of evaporated gas. We don’t see a cometary tail here, but, nevertheless, we see a deviation from the expected orbit. And that is the thing that triggered the paper. Once I realized that the object is moving differently than expected, then the question is what gives it the extra push. And, by the way, after our paper appeared, another paper came out with analysis that showed very tight limits on any carbon-based molecules in the vicinity of this object.
What is the significance of that?
It means that there is no evidence of gas that relates to the evaporation of ice. We don’t see the telltale signatures of cometary tail. Moreover, if it was cometary activity, then we would expect the spin period of this object to change, and we don’t see that. All of these things are indicative of the fact that it is nothing like a comet that we have seen before in the solar system. And it is also nothing like an asteroid. Its brightness varies by a factor of ten, and the maximum you typically observe is a factor of three. It has a much more extreme geometry, and there is some other force pushing it. The question is, what’s providing this force, and that was the trigger for our paper.
The only thing that came to my mind is that maybe the light from the sun, as it bounces off its surface, gives it an extra push. It’s just like a wind bouncing off a sail on a sailboat. So we checked that and found that you need the thickness of the object to be less than a millimetre in order for that to work. If it is indeed less than a millimetre thick, if it is pushed by the sunlight, then it is maybe a light sail, and I could not think of any natural process that would make a light sail. It is much more likely that it is being made by artificial means, by a technological civilization.
I should say, just as background, I do not view the possibility of a technological civilization as speculative, for two reasons. The first is that we exist. And the second is that at least a quarter of the stars in the Milky Way galaxy have a planet like Earth, with surface conditions that are very similar to Earth, and the chemistry of life as we know it could develop. If you roll the dice so many times, and there are tens of billions of stars in the Milky Way, it is quite likely we are not alone.
So this civilization would be out of the solar system and in the galaxy?
In the galaxy. It may be dead by now, because we don’t take good care of our planet. Imagine another history, in which the Nazis have a nuclear weapon and the Second World War ends differently. You can imagine a civilization that develops technology like that, which would lead to its own destruction.
It’s possible that the civilization is not alive anymore, but it did send out a spacecraft. We ourselves sent out Voyager I and Voyager II. There could be a lot of equipment out there. The point is that this is the very first object we found from outside the solar system. It is very similar to when I walk on the beach with my daughter and look at the seashells that are swept ashore. Every now and then we find an object of artificial origin. And this could be a message in a bottle, and we should be open-minded. So we put this sentence in the paper.
It’s different, of course, but the way you said that reminded me of an argument I have heard for creationism, which is that if you find a watch on the beach, you know it must be man-made, and, since our eyes are as complex as a watch, we must also be designed by a creator.
An advanced technological civilization is a good approximation to God. Suppose you took a cell phone and showed it to a caveperson. The caveperson would say it was a nice rock. The caveperson is used to rocks. So now imagine this object—‘Oumuamua—being the iPhone and us being the cave people. We look at it and say it’s a rock. It’s just an unusual rock. The point of this analogy is that, for a caveperson, the technologies we have today would have been magic. They would have been God-given.
Coryn Bailer-Jones, an astronomer quoted in one of the pieces on your paper, wrote, “In science we must ask ourselves, ‘Where is the evidence? Not’ ”—
Exactly!Exactly!
Hold on. “ ‘Not where is the lack of evidence so that I can fit in any hypothesis that I like?’ ” [Bailer-Jones, of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, in Heidelberg, Germany, has identified four possible home stars for ‘Oumuamua, and was asked to respond to Loeb’s light-sail theory by NBC.]
Well, it’s exactly the approach that I took. I approached this with a scientific mind, like I approach any other problem in astronomy or science that I work on. The point is that we follow the evidence, and the evidence in this particular case is that there are six peculiar facts. And one of these facts is that it deviated from an orbit shaped by gravity while not showing any of the telltale signs of cometary outgassing activity. So we don’t see the gas around it, we don’t see the cometary tail. It has an extreme shape that we have never seen before in either asteroids or comets. We know that we couldn’t detect any heat from it and that it’s much more shiny, by a factor of ten, than a typical asteroid or comet. All of these are facts. I am following the facts.
Last year, I wrote a paper about cosmology where there was an unusual result, which showed that perhaps the gas in the universe was much colder than we expected. And so we postulated that maybe dark matter has some property that makes the gas cooler. And nobody cares, nobody is worried about it, no one says it is not science. Everyone says that is mainstream—to consider dark matter, a substance we have never seen. That’s completely fine. It doesn’t bother anyone.
But when you mention the possibility that there could be equipment out there that is coming from another civilization—which, to my mind, is much less speculative, because we have already sent things into space—then that is regarded as unscientific. But we didn’t just invent this thing out of thin air. The reason we were driven to put in that sentence was because of the evidence, because of the facts. If someone else has a better explanation, they should write a paper about it rather than just saying what you said.
One of your responses to these criticisms was, “I follow the maxim of Sherlock Holmes: ‘When you have excluded the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.’ ” But when it comes to things we can’t explain or don’t understand, don’t we often turn to concepts that do exist in popular culture and society—
No. No! No. Let me give you a better example for the kind of argument you are making. The multiverse is a mainstream idea—that anything that can happen will happen an infinite number of times. And I think that is not scientific, because it cannot be tested. Whereas the next time we see an object like this one, we can contemplate taking a photograph. My motivation, in part, is to motivate the scientific community to collect more data on the next object rather than argue a priori that they know the answer. In the multiverse case, we have no way of testing it, and everyone is happy to say, “Ya!”
Another mainstream idea is the extra dimension. You see that in string theory, which gets a lot of good press, and awards are given to members of that community. Not only has it not been tested empirically for almost forty years now but there is no hope it will be tested in the next forty years. And yet your friend has no problem with that! Whoever you are quoting has no problem with the multiverse, with string theory. No problem!
We don’t know what the person, Coryn Bailer-Jones, thinks about these things, to be clear.
He never complains about it, he never mentions it.
I don’t even know it’s a “he,” and I don’t know his or her opinions.
O.K., whoever.
The point I was trying to make is that we live in a culture where people talk about aliens.
No, but that’s different.
Hold on. Let me finish. The term U.F.O., in popular usage, has basically come to mean aliens of some sort. My question is whether we tend to see things that we can’t know or understand through the prism of things we have heard about since we were kids. Aren’t we more likely to see something like an alien society as an explanation than something we maybe can’t even comprehend or put into words?
I don’t enjoy science fiction because there are things in science fiction that violate the laws of physics. I like science and I like fiction separately. The main argument against any of the U.F.O. stories that you may have heard about is that the technology of detection have improved dramatically over the past few decades. We have cameras that are far better than we used to have, and nevertheless the evidence remains marginal. And so that is why there is no scientific credibility to U.F.O.s.
What we are talking about today is part of science. We have seen an object from outside the solar system, and we are trying to figure what it is made of and where it came from. We don’t have as much data as I would like. Given the data that we have, I am putting this on the table, and it bothers people to even think about that, just like it bothered the Church in the days of Galileo to even think about the possibility that the Earth moves around the sun. Prejudice is based on experience in the past. The problem is that it prevents you from making discoveries. If you put the probability at zero per cent of an object coming into the solar system, you would never find it!
Have your religious beliefs, or beliefs about God, changed in any way in the time you have been studying astronomy?
I am not religious. Why do you make that assumption?
I didn’t. I was wondering if your thoughts had changed one way or the other.
First of all, it depends on what you mean by God. But if you take something that is zero and multiple it by any number, it remains zero. I was secular to start with. I am not religious. I am struck by the order we find in the universe, by the regularity, by the existence of laws of nature. That is something I am always in awe of, how the laws of nature we find here on Earth seem to apply all the way out to the edge of the universe. That is quite remarkable. The universe could have been chaotic and very disorganized. But it obeys a set of laws much better than people obey a set of laws here. My work as a scientist is purely based on evidence and rational thinking. That’s all.
Researchers think that the Cow may be a very rare, unusual type of supernova – the death of a massive star. The image shows the remnant of RCW 86, the oldest documented supernova, observed in 185 A.D.
Nasa
Scientists call it the AT2018cow – but of course it doesn’t go moo. The name is simply chosen based on a randomised three-letter naming convention. But as supernovae go, it’s certainly a whopper, and an extremely unusual, never before seen type of supernova (if it is indeed one - which isn't confirmed yet).
“It was fast, blue and bright,” says Regis Cartier, a researcher who observed Cow with the Southern Astrophysical Research SOAR Telescope in Chile. “I dropped everything else I was doing.” The stellar explosion was not only extremely bright, it also lit up science instruments across the electromagnetic spectrum.
First spotted on June 16 last year, the results of the observations have just been announced at the 233rd meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Seattle.
The Cow was first noticed - and named - by Stephen Smartt, an astronomer at Queen’s University Belfast, while he was analysing data from two asteroid-tracking ATLAS telescopes in Hawaii. His team sent out an alert to the astronomical community the next day. Shortly afterwards, multiple observatories all around the globe zoomed in on the unusual event – in the best spirit of a very new field known as multi-messenger astronomy. Since about three years now, scientists drop any non-urgent observations and co-ordinate their research whenever something spectacular happens in the universe.
How to see the total lunar eclipse in the UK. Top tip: look up
As a result, the Cow was tracked by many different telescopes scanning the skies all the way from low-energy radio waves to visible light, X-rays and very high-energy gamma radiation - leading to a flurry of academic papers. “There was a bit of a race to see who could publish their results first,” says Caltech astronomer Brian Grefenstette, who is a NASA telescope NuSTAR instrument scientist and co-author of one of the papers. “We included theorists as well as radio, optical and X-ray observers… to make sure we get as complete a picture as possible of what’s going on in the source.”
Apart from the two ATLAS telescopes, the veteran Keck twins, also in Hawaii, swiveled into action, together with a telescope on La Palma, one of Spain’s Canary Islands, and several other instruments - focusing on the event for days, weeks and months.
Researchers are still trying to make sense of what exactly the Cow is (or was), though. The main theory is that we have witnessed a collapse of a star in action – forming a black hole or a neutron star, a sort of super-dense stellar corpse, 200 million years ago. And it happened in the (relatively) nearby constellation Hercules, on the outskirts of a dwarf galaxy there.
When a massive star dies, its core implodes, causing a bright explosion – a supernova. The core collapses into either a black hole or a neutron star. That’s a theory, though, and the Cow could be the most direct evidence yet of how such an event unfolds.
Supernovae have been observed since 185 AD, when Chinese astronomers recorded their observations of a “guest star”. The term supernova was coined by Swiss astronomer Fritz Zwicky in 1934. Until now, scientists had classified seven different types of Supernovae (Type 1a, 1b, 1c, II, III, IV and V), but the Cow is different. First, the event was unnaturally bright – 10 to 100 times brighter than the typical blast of an exploding star. It also reached its peak brightness over just a few days, while typical supernovae can take weeks, and the Cow’s visible light disappeared in just 16 days; the supernova observed in 185 AD, for example, lasted at least eight months.

At first, Smartt and colleagues gathered mostly optical data - which prompted a team led by Daniel Perley, an astrophysicist at Liverpool John Moores University, to suggest that the event was the moment a black hole ripped apart a star. This is known as tidal disruption.
But soon data in other wavelengths started trickling in. Astronomer Anna Ho at the California Institute of Technology and the lead author of a paper accepted to the Astrophysical Journal, started observing the Cow in radio. First, she used (remotely) the Submillimeter Array in Hawaii, and then - the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile. The short-wavelength radiation from the Cow that ALMA picked up continued for weeks, again unlike a typical supernova, enabling the team to observe the phenomenon for 80 days.
This indicates, Ho says, the presence of some kind of a central engine – a just-born black hole accreting matter, or a rapidly rotating, highly magnetised neutron star. “There wasn’t just a single release of energy in an explosion, so there must be some kind of ongoing energy production,” Ho adds.
Another team, led by Raffaella Margutti, an astrophysicist at Northwestern University, arrived to the same conclusion. The researchers spied on the Cow looking for X-rays with NuSTAR and the European Space Agency’s INTEGRAL space telescopes, and for radio waves using the National Radio Astronomy Observatory’s Very Large Array.
In a paper that will also appear in the Astrophysical Journal, Margutti's team say that the event was being reheated from the inside – indicating something powering it from within and echoing Ho's findings. Usually, there are plenty of heavy elements produced during a stellar explosion (the stuff that makes up things like humans and our Earth), which block the central engine – but this time, strangely, there was about 10 times less debris than expected - about a tenth of our sun's mass. Why? “This is a topic that’s still up for debate,” says Grefenstette. “But this is a whole new field. So hopefully, we’ll see more events like Cow in the future that can help us figure out what’s really going on.”

From the visible light analysis, scientists were able to estimate the composition and speed of the material ejected by AT2018cow, while the radio and X-ray data helped them calculate the densities of the material and the presence of inner engines. “This is a great example of multi-wavelength astronomy,” says David Clements, a reader in astrophysics at Imperial College London, who wasn’t involved in any of the papers. “They threw whatever they had at it and hoped that some of it would lead to clearer answers.”
The speed of light, just shy of 300 million meters per second, is the theoretical speed limit of the universe. Compared to anything we encounter on a daily basis, light travels so fast that it appears to be instantaneous.
But a new series of animations by NASA scientist James O’Donoghue shows how dismally slow the speed of light is compared to the scale of our solar systemBusiness Insiderreports.
The videos, the first of which shows a beam of light orbiting the Earth 7.5 times per second, demonstrate why it takes so long to communicate with Mars rovers and why scientists have no feasible means of reaching or even communicating with hypothetical inhabitants of distant exoplanets.
Zooming Out
Looking only at our own planet, light still seemspretty fast. For comparison, the world’s fastest plane, an X-15, reached a top speed of 2,000 meters per second. At that speed, it would take the plane 5.5 hours to circle the planet.
But once you start to zoom out, it becomes just how slow the speed of light is compared to any sort of cosmic scale. O’Donoghue’s second animation shows how long it takes for light to travel between Earth and the moon. It’s about a 2.5 second round-trip journey — still dizzyingly quick.
Are We There Yet?
But then O’Donoghue zooms out to show the distance between Earth and Mars. Now, watching the light travel between planets is like watching your microwave count down.
In case you don’t feel like sticking around for the whole six-minute video, we reveal the ending below. Don’t read on unless you’re comfortable risking having the video spoiled!
In the animation, the beam of light takes just over three minutes to travel from Earth to Mars, then takes just as long to make it back home. That’s why many Mars rovers have pre-programmed behaviors, like how NASA’s InSightautomatically deployed its own landing procedure — remote controls from scientists on Earth would take too long to arrive.
Artificial Intelligence – Software That Writes Itself
Jay Tuck explains how it’s not futuristic. It’s happening now. These computers are way smarter than we are. No one understands exactly how stock markets work any more as the algorithms are written by machines. Prices of airoplane seats are decided by machines. Picture analysis is done better by machines in hospitals.
Robots are getting cuddlier. They never die. They have no heart.
The power of AI needs explaining. – surveillance cameras are able to see phenomenal detail on the ground from 17,ooo feet. We can all be monitored by computers in real time. Facial recognition can be done from above. Our whole lives are being recorded.
Big data only works if you have artificial intelligence to make sense of it. The company that has the most information in the world is buying up all artificial intelligence companies from around the world…Google. DARPA financed robots which are able to operate as part of military units.
Modern drone Pegasus is invisible. It films the sky above and projects the image onto the bottom of the drone. Drones are not permitted to kill people without human input. Yet robots are able to make kill decisions. The goal is to get the robots to make the kill decisions.
Yet sometimes artificial intelligence makes mistakes. A robotic weapon (Talon) went wrong in a demo in Iraq and a marine was able to knock it over before it killed two hundred spectators. Yet it’s getting better every day.
Once the internet of things is brought into being, the supercomputer will operate spontaneously managing our lives. AI is a network with back-ups all over the world which cannot be dismantled. It has to be stopped before it kills us.
Observations of a rare hypernova complete the picture of the death of the massive stars
Credit: Anna Serena Esposito
The end of a star’s life can occur in a tranquil manner in the case of low mass stars, such as the Sun. This is not the case, however, for very massive stars, which suffer such extreme explosive events that they can outshine the brightness of the whole galaxy that hosts them. An international group of astronomers has published a detailed study of the death of a high-mass star that produced a gamma-ray burst (GRB) and a hypernova, in which they have detected a new component in this type of events. The study, published in Nature, provides a link that completes the scenario that relates hypernovae with GRBs.
“The first hypernova was detected in 1998 as a very energetic type of supernova that followed a gamma-ray burst. This was the first evidence of the connection between both phenomena” says Luca Izzo, researcher at the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (IAA-CSIC), and leader the study.
The scenario that has been proposed to explain the phenomena involves a star over 25 times more massive than the Sun that, once it has exhausted its fuel, suffers the collapse of its core. During this collapse, the nucleus of the star transforms either into a neutron star or a black hole, and at the same time, two polar jets of matter are ejected. These jets drill through the external layers of the star and, once out of the star, produce detectable gamma-rays (the so-called GRB). Finally, the external layers of the star are ejected, generating a hypernova explosion, tens of times brighter than a typical supernova.
Although the connection between GRBs and hypernovae has been well established over the last 20 years, the opposite is not so clear, since there have been several hypernovae that do not have associated GRBs. “This work has allowed us to find the missing link between these two types of hypernova through the detection of an additional component: A sort of hot cocoon generated around the jet, as it propagates through the outer layers of the progenitor star – indicates Dr. Izzo (IAA-CSIC) -. The jet transfers a significant part of its energy to the cocoon and, if it manages to reach the surface of the star, will produce the gamma-ray emission that we know as a GRB”.
On the other hand, the jet can fail to pierce the external layers of the star and never emerge into the circumstellar medium if it lacks the necessary energy. In this case we would observe a hypernova but not a GRB. The cocoon detected in this study is the link between the two subtypes of hypernovae that had been studied until now, and the chocked jets would naturally explain the observed differences.
The international team of scientists, including astronomers from the Universities of Leicester, Bath and Warwick, found evidence for the existence of a ‘hot cocoon’ of material enveloping a relativistic jet escaping a dying star. This research is published online today (Wednesday 16 January) and in print in Nature tomorrow (Thursday 17 January).
A relativistic jet is a very powerful phenomena which involves plasma jets shooting out of black holes at close to the speed of light, and can extend across millions of light years.
This is an artist representation of the hypernova. The interaction of the jet with the outer layers of the star forms a cocoon that surrounds the head of the jet and begins to propagate laterally with respect to the direction of the jet. The jet is capable of completely perforating the envelope of the parent star, emitting high energy gamma rays, responsible for GRB
Observations of supernova SN2017iuk taken shortly after its onset showed it expanding rapidly, at one third of the speed of light. This is the fastest supernova expansion measured to date. Monitoring of the outflow over many weeks revealed a clear difference between the initial chemical composition and that at later times.
Taken together, these are indicators of the presence of the much theorised hot cocoon, filling a gap in our knowledge of how a jet of material escaping a star interacts with the stellar envelope around it and providing a potential link between two previously distinct classes of supernovae.
The supernova signals the final demise of a massive star, in which the stellar core collapses and the outer layers are violently blown off. SN2017iuk belongs to a class of extreme supernovae, sometimes called hypernovae or GRB-SNe, that accompany a yet more dramatic event known as a gamma-ray burst (GRB).
At stellar death, a highly relativistic, narrow beam of material can be ejected from the poles of the star which glows brightly first in gamma radiation and then across the entire electromagnetic spectrum and is known as a GRB.
This is an image of the explosion obtained by the Gran Telescopio Canarias in the period of maximum brightness of the event.

Until now, astronomers have been unable to study the earliest moments in the development of a supernova of this kind (a GRB-SN), but SN2017iuk was fortuitously close-by – at roughly 500 million light years from Earth – and the GRB light was underluminous, allowing the SN itself to be detectable at early times.
Dr Rhaana Starling, Associate Professor in the University of Leicester’s Department of Physics and Astronomy said: “This immediately looked like an event worth chasing, as it happened in a grand-design spiral galaxy at very close proximity, cosmologically speaking.
“When the first sets of data came in there was an unusual component to the light that looked very blue, prompting a monitoring campaign to see if we could determine its origin by following the evolution and taking detailed spectra.
“The gamma-ray burst itself looked quite weak, so we could see other processes that were going on around the newly-formed jet which are normally drowned out. The idea of a cocoon of thermalised gas created by the relativistic jet as it drills out of the star had been proposed and implied in other cases, but here was the evidence that we needed to pin down the existence of such a structure.”
A coordinated approach using a suite of space- and ground-based observatories was required to monitor the supernova over 30 days and at many wavelengths. The event was first detected using the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. Swift is a NASA space mission in which the University of Leicester is one of three partners, and hosts its UK data centre.
Data obtained with the Gravitational-wave Optical Transient Observatory (GOTO) helped to track the supernova light, while spectroscopy was obtained through dedicated observing programmes including initiatives by the STARGATE Collaboration headed up by Professor Nial Tanvir at the University of Leicester, which uses 8-m telescopes at the European Southern Observatory.
Professor Tanvir, Lecturer in Physics and Astronomy at the University of Leicester said: “The relativistic jet punches out through the star as if it was a bullet being fired out from the inside of an apple. What we’ve seen for the first time is all the apply debris that explodes out after the bullet.”
Speeds of up to 115,000 kilometres per second were measured for the expanding supernova for approximately one hour after its onset. A different chemical composition was found for the early expanding supernova when compared with the more iron-rich later ejecta. The team concluded that just hours after the onset the ejecta is coming from the interior, from a hot cocoon created by the jet.
Existing supernova production models proved insufficient to account for the large amount of high velocity material measured. The team developed new models which incorporated the cocoon component and found these were an excellent match.
SN2017iuk also provides a long-sought link between the supernova that accompany GRBs, and those that do not: in lone supernovae, high speed outflows have also been seen, with velocities reaching 50,000 kilometres per second, which can originate in the same cocoon scenario but escape of the relativistic GRB jet is somehow thwarted.
Core-collapse supernovae without GRBs are usually found much later after their onset, giving scientists very little chance of detecting any signatures of a hot cocoon, whilst cocoon features in GRB-associated supernovae are usually hidden by the bright, relativistic jet.
The rare case of SN2017iuk has opened a window onto the earliest stages of this type of supernova phenomenon, allowing the elusive cocoon structure to be observed
THE STORY OF THE EVENT
On December 5, 2017, GRB 171205A was detected in a galaxy located 500 million light years from Earth. However far this may seem, this makes it the fourth closest long GRB ever observed. “Such events occur on average every ten years, so we immediately started an intense observing campaign to observe the emerging hypernova from the very early phases on – says Christina Thöne, researcher at the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (IAA-CSIC) who participated in the discovery -. In fact, with our early observations we managed to obtain the earliest detection of a hypernova to date, less than one day after the collapse of the star”.
And indeed, very early on the first features of a hypernova were detected with the Gran Telescopio Canarias, on the island of La Palma. “This was only possible because the luminosity of the jet was much weaker than usual, as typically the jets outshine the hypernova during the first week – says Antonio de Ugarte Postigo, researcher at the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (IAA-CSIC) who participated in the paper -. What we saw, however, was a very peculiar component, which showed unprecedented expansion velocities and chemical abundances that were different to the ones seen in similar events”.
This peculiar chemical composition and the high expansion velocities matched the expectations for the existence of a cocoon accompanying the jet at the surface of the star. This had been predicted but had been never observed before. The cocoon observed during the first days dragged material out from the interior of the star, and its chemical composition was determined in this study. After a few days, this component faded away, and the hypernova evolved in a similar way as the ones previously observed.
The total energy emitted by the cocoon during these first days was larger than that of the GRB, implying that the jet transferred a large part of its energy to the cocoon. However, it also indicates that the energy of the GRB depends to some degree on the interaction between the jet and the stellar material, and on this new component, the cocoon. This discovery also implies that the models must be revised: “While in the standard model of supernovae the collapse of the nucleus leads to quasi-spherical explosions, the evidence of such an energetic emission produced by the cocoon suggests that the jet plays an important role in core-collapse supernovae which means we will need to consider it in supernova explosion models”, concludes Izzo (IAA-CSIC).

Waves in Saturn’s Rings Give Precise Measurement of Planet’s Rotation Rate
This has been a tricky problem for years as explained below, and now appears to have been resolved. But whether that’s the end of the story remains to be seen.
Saturn’s distinctive rings were observed in unprecedented detail by NASA’s Cassini spacecraft, and scientists have now used those observations to probe the interior of the giant planet and obtain the first precise determination of its rotation rate, reports Phys.org.

The length of a day on Saturn, according to their calculations, is 10 hours 33 minutes and 38 seconds.
The researchers studied wave patterns created within Saturn’s rings by the planet’s internal vibrations. In effect, the rings act as an extremely sensitive seismograph by responding to vibrations within the planet itself.
Similar to Earth’s vibrations from an earthquake, Saturn responds to perturbations by vibrating at frequencies determined by its internal structure. Heat-driven convection in the interior is the most likely source of the vibrations. These internal oscillations cause the density at any particular place within the planet to fluctuate, which makes the gravitational field outside the planet oscillate at the same frequencies.
“Particles in the rings feel this oscillation in the gravitational field. At places where this oscillation resonates with ring orbits, energy builds up and gets carried away as a wave,” explained Christopher Mankovich, a graduate student in astronomy and astrophysics at UC Santa Cruz.
Mankovich is lead author of a paper, published January 17 in the Astrophysical Journal, comparing the wave patterns in the rings with models of Saturn’s interior structure.
Most of the waves observed in Saturn’s rings are due to the gravitational effects of the moons orbiting outside the rings, said coauthor Jonathan Fortney, professor of astronomy and astrophysics at UC Santa Cruz. “But some of the features in the rings are due to the oscillations of the planet itself, and we can use those to understand the planet’s internal oscillations and internal structure,” he said.
Mankovich developed a set of models of the internal structure of Saturn, used them to predict the frequency spectrum of Saturn’s internal vibrations, and compared those predictions with the waves observed by Cassini in Saturn’s C ring. One of the main results of his analysis is the new calculation of Saturn’s rotation rate, which has been surprisingly difficult to measure.
As a gas giant planet, Saturn has no solid surface with landmarks that could be tracked as it rotates. Saturn is also unusual in having its magnetic axis nearly perfectly aligned with its rotational axis. Jupiter’s magnetic axis, like Earth’s, is not aligned with its rotational axis, which means the magnetic pole swings around as the planet rotates, enabling astronomers to measure a periodic signal in radio waves and calculate the rotation rate.
The rotation rate of 10:33:38 determined by Mankovich’s analysis is several minutes faster than previous estimates based on radiometry from the Voyager and Cassini spacecraft.
“We now have the length of Saturn’s day, when we thought we wouldn’t be able to find it,” said Cassini Project Scientist Linda Spilker. “They used the rings to peer into Saturn’s interior, and out popped this long-sought, fundamental quality of the planet. And it’s a really solid result. The rings held the answer.”
Cassini image shows in unprecedented detail a density wave in Saturn’s B ring, most likely caused by a small moon systematically perturbing the orbits of ring particles.

The idea that Saturn’s rings could be used to study the seismology of the planet was first suggested in 1982, long before the necessary observations were possible.

Scientists drilling into Mercer Lake, a Subglacial Antarctic lake locked beneath 3500 feet (one kilometer) of ice have discovered the ancient carcasses of tiny animals including “water bears,” in a finding scientists described as “fully unexpected”.
On 26th December, researchers funded by the US National Science Foundation (NSF) succeeded in melting a hole through the thick ice to the water below. A report in the journal Nature said that the Subglacial Antarctic Lakes Scientific Access (SALSA) team “melted through an enormous frozen river with a high-pressure, hot-water drill.”
The water below the ice sheet is hydraulically active and connected with the Ross Sea and Mercer Lake has been identified as being at high risk of collapsing with the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, due to global warming. This is only the second time humans have ever glimpsed the contents of the lake and the massive scientific operation was conducted with technologies including “ice-penetrating radar and other remote-sensing techniques“, according to the article in Nature.

U.S. scientists successfully drilled into Lake Whillans, a subglacial expanse of water measuring about 1.2 square miles (3 square kilometers) and hidden deep beneath the Antarctic ice sheet, they reported on Friday, Jan. 25, 2013.

Rediscovering Ancient Subaquatic Life
The Guardian reported that the scientists took samples of mud from the bottom of the lake’s icy waters and found “tendrils of plant or fungi and remnants of photosynthetic algae that lived and died in the area millions of years ago when Antarctica was much warmer.” The researchers later discovered shrimp-like crustaceans and eight-legged tardigrades, or “water bears” which are described as being smaller than poppy seeds.
David Harwood, a micro-palaeontologist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, told reporters at Nature that discovering the animals in the ancient lake was “fully unexpected”, but what really shocked biologists at Lake Mercer was the realization that some of the beasts were landlubbers.
The scientists know that these ancient creatures inhabited Transantarctic Mountain ponds and streams when the glaciers had receded during warm periods between 10,000 years or 120,000 years ago. But an outstanding problem is that these crustaceans and tardigrade inhabited ponds some 50 miles (80 kilometers) from Lake Mercer, and how they got there is not yet clear.
DNA Might Provide Answers to the Creatures’ Ancient Origins

On 5 th January, the scientists sealed the borehole and they think it will take several years to analyze and test all of the collected samples. They need to test DNA samples from the carcasses of the crustaceans to ascertain whether they were marine or freshwater species. The SALSA team also aim to determine the age of the organic material with carbon dating and they will also sequence the creatures’ DNA attempting to answer how, when and how far the Antarctica’s glaciers retreated over the millennia.
In 2013, Slawek Tulaczyk, a glaciologist at the University of California, Santa Cruz, was co-leader in a drilling expedition at Lake Whillans, a subglacial Antarctic lake 50 kilometres (31 miles) from Lake Mercer. Tulaczyk, who has been studying sediment samples from lakes beneath glacial ice since the 1990s, told The Guardian that “nothing like that has ever been found before under the ice sheet.” An earlier article in Nature reported that although Tulaczyk’s team had found Lake Whillans brimming with microbes, they had not observed any “signs of higher life,” like that discovered at Mercer Lake.
The whole idea of lakes beneath Antarctica’s frozen cover was not really considered until the 1990s when satellite seismic mapping technologies and ice-penetrating radar began to reveal evidence of subglacial lakes.
Morgenochtend kleurt maan felrood: bloedmaan, supermaan én totale maansverduistering - HLN.be
NASAEen bloedmaan.
Well, that didn’t take long. On December 30th, 2018, researchers from the SALSA (Subglacial Antarctic Lakes Scientific Access) expedition used hot water to drill through Antarctic ice to a depth of 1,084 meters (3,556 feet) toreach Lake Mercer – a “lost” lake buried 600 kilometers from the South Pole. While they expected to find the microbes that seem to exist everywhere and in the harshest conditions, the researchers scraping mud off of an instrument retrieved from Lake Mercer were stunned to find it contained the remains of higher life forms – crustaceans, plants and one hardy little eight-legged bear.
“Fully unexpected.”
In a press release published in the journal Nature, University of Nebraska-Lincoln micro-palaeontologist (talk about specialization) David Harwood described his reaction to what he saw with his microscope positioned over a speck of the mud from a lake that has been locked under the ice for thousands of years. He expected to see the million-year-old shells of photosynthetic algae from Antarctica’s warmer times. What he didn’t expect was something that looked like “an old leaf that’s been sitting on the ground for a season.” That “leaf” turned out to be the shell and legs of a shrimp-like crustacean. In micro-paleontology, where there’s one, there’s bound to be another and sure enough, Harwood found a fresher specimen that looked much like it did when it was alive. He also recognized that one of the legged creatures was a tardigrade, the ‘water bears’ that seem to be able to survive the harshest conditions, and things resembling worms were tendrils of a land-dwelling plant or fungus.
To rule out the possibility that the unexpected creatures were the result of their own doing, the researchers sterilized the probe and sent it back down again. Harwood’s microscope found more crustaceans in the new mud. That means they definitely lived in Lake Mercer. But how did they get there?
To answer that question , the mud was sent to animal ecologist Byron Adams at McMurdo Station on the Antarctic coast. He recognized the crustaceans, tardigrade and fungi as the same creatures he’s seen alive in regions of Antarctica called the Dry Valleys and the Transantarctic Mountains. Based on that, he believes the creatures actually lived tens of thousands of years ago in the Transarctic Mountains. After they died, their remains were washed down into Lake Mercer where they intermingled with the million-year-old diatoms.
“What was sort of stunning about the stuff from Lake Mercer is it’s not super, super-old. They’ve not been dead that long.”
That’s disappointing news to those who were hoping the creatures actually lived in the buried lake, but Adams doesn’t rule out the possibility and would like to see more mud, thinking “it’s possible that you could still find things that are alive.” In the meantime, he points out that biologists are now changing the history of Antarctica once written by geologists and glaciologists. The SALSA will now use radiocarbon dating to determine the age of the creatures and DNA testing to find out if they lived in fresh water or the ocean. Further tests will determine if they were surface creatures eating algae or were actually able to live in the dark, sub-ice lake where they were found.
You never know what you might catch in Antarctica
This is truly exciting research, but the scientists are racing against the Antarctica-melting force of climate change. Will we find out where we came from before it’s no longer here?

There is absolutely no doubt that the world, right now, is a dangerous place – an extremely dangerous place. In light of all that, an important questions needs to be asked – and answered. If war comes – and it turns nuclear – will world leaders and elite figures head deep below the surface of the planet, only to return years later to claim what remains of the planet and human civilization? Such a thing is not at all impossible. In fact, there are significant signs that plans are indeed being made to ensure that the underground will be the place to be if the apocalypse occurs. But, as is usually the case, it will be the controlling elite who will be calling the shots, rather than the rest of us. Let’s take a look at some of the highly-classified installations that exist on our planet and how they may make use of them if the unthinkable happens.
Given the fact that Russia amounts to a huge area of land, there are plenty of areas in which secure, underground facilities can be built – and which have been built. The U.S. Intelligence community has known for decades that at least two, massive facilities exist – and which have the ability to survive nuclear strikes, chiefly as a result of the fact that they are built deeply into almost impenetrable mountains. Those same mountains are Mount Yamantau and the Kosvinsky Mountains.
As for Yamantau, it stands at in excess of 5,000 feet and is the highest mountain in the Urals. As far back as the 1990s, the Russians began the construction of a massive facility within Mount Yamantau, primarily to provide the controlling elite with a secure place in which to survive a nuclear exchange between the super-powers. American spy-satellites have confirmed massive digging on the mountain, suggesting that huge, hollowed out sections of the mountain now exist – and which have been turned into the perfect locations for literally hundreds of thousands of people to survive an attack. And make no mistake, the Yamantau facility is gigantic. Studies undertaken by American intelligence agents suggest that its size is that of Washington, D.C.’s huge Interstate 495, which surrounds the capitol of the United States. Given that I-495 has a circumference of more than sixty miles and that will give you an idea of the scale of the Yamantau facility.
As for the Mount Kosvinsky installation, that is equally almost impenetrable. Built well into the heart of the mountain – which is located in the northern Urals – it is protected by around 1,200-feet of granite and, just like the Yamantau base, is designed to provide housing for the elite in the event of a nuclear attack – and also to allow for some form of continuation of government. Presuming, of course, there is anyone left to be governed after a major nuclear exchange between the most powerful nations on the planet. All that’s really known for sure is that the construction of the base was completed by the mid-1990s and that it, like Yamantau, can house thousands of people – with a near-indefinite supply of food, water, medical supplies and all the provisions needed to survive underground not just for months but for years. Some intelligence estimates suggest possibly even for decades.
Mount Yamantau
Moving away from the Urals, but still focused on Russia, there is Kapustin Yar, which is situated in Astrakhan Oblast. Construction of the installation began back in the 1940s – with the intention being to create the ultimate facility for building and testing new and novel rockets. The first such rocket launch took place in October 1947 – it was a test using a captured Nazi A-4 rocket; one of a number that the Russians got their hands on when the Nazi regime collapsed in 1945. As the base grew in size and scope, yet further rocket tests were undertaken and by the early 1950s atomic-bombs tests were carried out in close proximity. Spy-satellites of the United States’ National Reconnaissance Office have noted that in the last few years massive digging has been afoot at Kapustin Yar, all of which suggests that the base is no longer just used for rocket and missile tests; but that it may be being refurbished on a gigantic scale – to essentially turn portions of it into a huge, underground bunker, one designed to withstand the terrible effects of a nuclear war.
Now let’s take a look at China. The most visible of the various installations that U.S. intelligence suspects have been converted into massive, bunker-style facilities is the Sanya installation, as it has become known; although, its official title is the Yulin Naval Base – Sanya being a nearby city which is home to around 700,000 people. Essentially, the installation, located on Hainan Island, is one of China’s most important submarine bases. But, it’s far more than that. The National Interest website states: “The People’s Liberation Army’s Navy (PLAN) is undoubtedly moving to buttress its presence on the island. On Yalong Bay near the island’s southeastern tip, China’s recently constructed Longpo naval base is a deep-water port complete with submarine piers, an underground submarine facility with tunnel access, and a demagnetizing facility to reduce the magnetic residuals on ship hulls.”
Hainan Island
The Diplomat notes: “Open-source intelligence tools provide an informative glimpse of Hainan Island’s busy, fortified, and increasingly vital base. All told, Yulin-East encompasses over 25 square kilometers of military infrastructure lying within a protected, man-made harbor… the base accommodates surface and subsurface vessels (and most of the necessary accouterments thereof), theater and point defense weapons systems, munitions transport vehicles and depots, and administrative buildings for military commanders.” Not only that: U.S. military spy-satellites, using ground-penetrating radar systems, have been able to confirm evidence of huge excavating within the hills that surround the base. In other words, while the submarine base certainly still exists, it is being expanded on – specifically with the creation of fortified facilities buried deep within the depths of the local landscape.
What all of this demonstrates is that two of the world’s most powerful nations – Russia and China – are taking careful, rapid and secret steps to create huge underground installations which may provide some degree of survival for the elite. If anyone tells you that Russia, particularly, is not a threat, they’re wrong.
By far one of the most well-known and beloved religious figure in history is Jesus Christ himself. Typically portrayed as a beacon of understanding, enlightenment, selflessness, and benevolence, he has been the cornerstone of one fo the biggest religions the world has ever seen. Yet there are some darker components to the history of Jesus Christ, and it seems that in addition to working his miracles and giving his sermons he was not above losing control of his anger and straight up cursing people from time to time, with three cities in particular becoming the target of his mighty displeasure.
The three cities that Jesus decided to lay down his wrath upon are often known as the “Unrepentant Cities,” and all are located around the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, in Israel, where Jesus Christ once made his home amongst the humble fishermen of the region. It is interesting in that these are places where Christ was once at home and even performed his miracles. Take the city called Chorazin, also known as Korazin or Korazim, which was an important place in those days, renowned for its wheat, and is where Jesus actually lived at one point after he left Nazareth, and in later years he would frequently visit the city and perform various miracles there, with it being one of the three key cities in which he conducted his ministry. It is said that despite these displays of power the people of the city did not repent their “ways,” which led to a rather uncharacteristically extreme reaction from Jesus, and according to Matthew and Luke’s gospels of the New Testament he then laid a horrible curse down upon this once great city, condemning it to wither away to nothingness.
Indeed, the city supposedly completely died, and according to writings by Eusebius it was destroyed by a catastrophic earthquake in 330 AD, after which it was rebuilt in the 5th century and later abandoned once more to leave it to rot. In later centuries the doomed city would become associated with the birthplace of the Antichrist, and it is not hard to see that it rather suffered from the spiteful anger of Jesus. It was not until the 19th century that ruins linked to the ancient lost city would be found in the vicinity of a place called Khirbet Kerazeh. Here an ancient synagogue was excavated, as well as various ruins fashioned from black basalt, most interestingly a huge block of the stuff, which was engraved with ancient Aramaic and is called the Seat of Moses, as well as carved human and animal figures and a well preserved statue of Medusa, which at that time would have certainly been considered a very pagan image. There is little evidence that these ruins actually existed in the time when Jesus was alive, and despite the few mentions of Chorazin in the New Testament it remains a bit of a lost historical mystery, and it is still not clear from the passages just what the people did exactly to incur such a vehement response from Christ.
Lying just a few kilometers away is another city purportedly cursed by Jesus, called Capernaum, a famous fishing port at the time and a major stopover on the Via Maris, the main trade route connecting Damascus in the north and Egypt in the south. It is also notable for being home to some of Jesus’ disciples, the fishermen Peter, Andrew, James and John, and the tax collector Matthew. Along with Chorazin it is also one of the three key cities, or the “Evangelical Triangle,” where he had his ministry and performed most of his miracles. Indeed Jesus once lived at Capernaum, calling it his “own city,” and he is said to have healed a paralyzed man, as well as a centurion’s servant boy who was seriously ill with palsy at home, also curing Peter’s mother-in-law, and raising the daughter of Jairus, the leader of the synagogue, back from the dead, and he is said to have rid many people of demonic possessions here as well. It was in the Capernaum synagogue that Jesus gave many sermons, including his famous Sermon on the Bread of Life (John 6:35-59), in which he says, “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life and I will raise him up at the last day.”
Alas, the people here were said to have been largely indifferent to the fantastical miracles they witnessed, unwilling to recognize Jesus’s true powers or to repent for their sins, and this too provoked a rage that caused him to curse it as well, despite what a home he considered it to be. This curse supposedly caused the town to fall into utter ruin, going from a thriving fishing market to a pale shadow of its former glory, becoming what a 3rd century account calls, “despicable; it numbers only seven houses of poor fishermen,” and all attempts to resettle the area were failed ventures met with woe and strife. As with Chorazin, many ruins have been found here, such as several synagogues and what is thought to have been the home of Saint Peter himself, and many of the structures were constructed of white limestone. The location is also home to the largest synagogue yet discovered in Israel, a massive ornate structure built in the 4th or 5th century upon the remains of a synagogue in which Jesus taught. When the ruins were first found in 1838, the curse apparently still had a shadow hanging over them, as American explorer Edward Robinson called the place “desolate and mournful.” In modern times, a modern Catholic Church sits upon eight grand pillars atop a mound overlooking the archeological excavation site, as if protecting this place and keeping the curse at bay.
Finally we come to the ancient fishing village of Bethsaida, also one of the Evangelical Triangle and the last of the known “cursed cities” of Jesus. It is the largest of the three cities, and was once a thriving capitol of the Kingdom of Geshur during the time of King David, and it was where Jesus met his first disciples, the fisherman Simon-Peter and his brother Andrew. It was also the place where Jesus performed miracles such as curing a blind man, as well as his famous miracle of providing food for a mass of 5,000 people with two fish and five loaves of bread (Matt. 14:13-21), often called the “Miracle of the Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes.” Unfortunately for them, the people of Bethsaida also fell on the wrong side of Jesus, and he cursed them as well, with the town later being annihilated by an earthquake in around 363 AD. It too would be rebuilt but subsequently abandoned, the land barren and not wanting people here anymore, leaving nothing but mysterious, dusty weed-choked ruins behind.
All of the cities we have looked at here Jesus Christ supposedly found fit to curse with all of his power, their lack of repentance and ways causing great ire for him. In these instances he went outside of his benevolent, forgiving ways, and chose instead to bight these cities with misfortune and death, and it was rather chillingly commended by him in Matthew 11:20–24 as such:
Woe unto thee, Chorazin! Woe unto thee, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the Day of Judgment than for you. And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
It is pretty shocking to see a figure of such a typically benevolent and forgiving nature to utter such words and display such scorn, but it seems Jesus was not above a certain fury when times called for it. These cities have become buried by the sands, lost to history and mostly devolved into feral ruins and rubble, but their legacy still stands as the only three times Jesus Christ lashed out to curse whole places. It is an interesting juxtaposition to what he usually stands for, and a frightening display of his power, if any of it ever really happened at all. In the end we have this figure of one of the world’s largest religions, renowned for his gentle nature and forgiving stance conjuring up dark forces to blight lands that did not agree with him, and although it is uncertain how much any reality any of this holds, it is somewhat chilling nonetheless, and a little known chapter and oddity of Biblical history.
While black holes can’t actually been seen, what the team did witness was clouds of celestial gases that were orbiting around something they couldn’t see. The team was studying two gas clouds, nicknamed Balloon and Stream in reference to their shape, for two days in May 2018 and that’s when they noticed the gas clouds moving mysteriously and spinning around an invisible center. They noticed this by using a set of 66 Chilean telescopes called the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) which are located across the Atacama Desert in the northern part of Chile.
Shunya Takekawa, who is an astrophysicist at the NAOJ, told New Scientist, “When I checked the ALMA data for the first time, I was really excited because the observed gas showed obvious orbital motions, which strongly suggest an invisible massive object lurking.”
While studying how the gas clouds were moving and orbiting the invisible object, they concluded that the black hole is approximately 30,000 times the mass of our Sun but it only occupies as much space as Jupiter because it’s so compact. And with the lack of light coming from that area, they concluded that it was in fact a medium-sized black hole.
Scientists have a pretty good understanding of the common tiny black holes and supermassive black holes located in our galaxy, but now they’re curious as to how many of the rare medium-sized black holes there are in the Milky Way. Astronomers do believe that they have found two other medium-sized black holes around the heart of our galaxy near Sagittarius A. These three medium-sized black holes could potentially be escapees from the large black hole that’s at the center of the Milky Way. They also believe that there are many more of these rare medium-sized black holes somewhere out there in the Universe.
The research conducted in finding this new medium-sized black hole has been detailed in an article on the arXiv.org website in December of 2018.
For whatever reasons, anomalous noises seem to have become a more frequently reported phenomenon recently. I have to wonder: are they actually occurring more often, or just being reported more often? From the now omnipresent mystery boomstostrange humswhich plague cities throughout the globe, the world abounds with strange sounds. What is making these anomalous noises, and why do they seem to be on the rise?
The latest spate of mystery noises occurred along the east coast of the US, where residents of four cities in four different states all seemed to have heard a similar terrifying and unexplained noise in recent weeks. While industrial causes are suspected in at least two of the cases, some residents aren’t buying those explanations.
Plus, major industrial sites are usually off-limits to the public, meaning they’re a perfect scapegoat if one was ever needed.
Late last month, residents of the Mid Valley region of Pennsylvania near Scranton heard what were described as “jet engine-like noises” loud enough to wake them up in bed. The noises began around 8:00 am local time and lasted for over an hour. Borough Council President Gerald Crinella said the noises sounded like “fighter jets flying overhead” and was so loud it could be heard indoors. Shortly after new of the incident broke, officials at the Lackawanna Energy Center say the noises were caused by an emergency pressure valve opening unexpectedly, creating “the loudest noise they’ve ever heard come from the plant.”
Two weeks later, a strikingly similar noise was heard much farther to the south near Tampa, Florida. Residents of the Davis Islands heard terrifyingly loud jet engine noises around 4:00 am on January 11. Emergency officials say the noise was caused by the nearby TECO Bayside Power Station, which was venting steam.
On January 17, residents of Salisbury, North Carolina were startled by a “mysterious ‘alien’ sound” heard throughout the city around 11:00 pm. Cameron Glen told local news affiliate FOX 46 that the noise sounded like a mix between “a locomotive and a space shuttle taking off.” The noise was heard for around five minutes and caused dogs and coyotes to howl. Local officials have reached out to nearby airports and power stations, but so far no one has claimed responsibility.
Normally, there’d be no reason to doubt that power plants would have to occasionally let off incredible amounts of steam. However, the timing and similarities of these three incidents seems a bit too coincidental to me. With reports of mysterious sonic booms on the rise, could these reports of jet engine noises be related? There’s no way law enforcement officials would lie to the press about anomalous events, is there?
What people are speculating the sounds are online...
Possible theories include:
Tectonic plates grinding - Tectonic plates are pieces of the Earth's crust and uppermost mantle, together referred to as the lithosphere. The plates are around 100 km (62 mi) thick and consist of two principal types of material: oceanic crust (also called sima from silicon and magnesium) and continental crust (sial from silicon and aluminium).
Atmospheric pressure - Atmospheric pressure is defined as the force per unit area exerted against a surface by the weight of the air above that surface.
Trains shunting- Self explanatory - noise comes from trains in reaction to the track and overhead wires.
Construction - Building works, especially if going on at the same time across a specific area, can led to similar sounds.
Aliens- Can this be an alien lifeform in the sky, perhaps scouring out Earth?
HAARP weapon- Rumours persist that the U.S. government uses secret weapons in the sky for defence and weather modifying, the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP). This wouldn't explain the sounds in other countries however...
The Apocalypse and the Seven Trumpets of Heaven - Seven trumpets are sounded, one at a time, to cue apocalyptic events that were seen in the vision of the Revelation of Christ Jesus, by John of Patmos. Somewhat more worrying as it would signal the end of the world...
This wave form shows how the sound was recorded when captured in Canada

Watch this interesting UFO video that was caught in the sky above Katy in Texas recently.
Witness report:
1 light, then 2, then 4 in triangle etc. We were driving north on hey 99 and like every night, there was air traffic. I saw a larger than normal light off in the distance, maybe a few miles. After about 30 seconds of watching while still driving, the one light suddenly becomes three lights, in a horizontal pattern. I pulled over to the side of the road and my friend and i continued to watch as this object got closer, yet still high up in the sky. Right as the lights got right over my truck, the three lights became 4 light and were now in the shape of a diamond. I turned my camera on and gave it to my friend so he could try to film the craft. As it got right over top of the truck it made a Sharpe right turn and seemed to glide off to the east. The craziest thing about it is how quiet the craft was. We couldn’t hear any sounds of jets or engines. The lights were in a diamond pattern, but the craft seemed to have a larger diameter than the position of the lights. We were able to get 1:37 seconds of the end of the sighting. We 2atched as it went east and then seemed to just disappear.
Scientists Finally Figured Out How to Travel Faster Than the Speed of Light
One of the most cherished science fiction scenarios is using a black hole as a portal to another dimension or time or universe. That fantasy may be closer to reality than previously imagined.
Black holes are perhaps the most mysterious objects in the universe. They are the consequence of gravity crushing a dying star without limit, leading to the formation of a true singularity — which happens when an entire star gets compressed down to a single point yielding an object with infinite density. This dense and hot singularity punches a hole in the fabric of spacetime itself, possibly opening up an opportunity for hyperspace travel. That is, a short cut through spacetime allowing for travel over cosmic scale distances in a short period.
Researchers previously thought that any spacecraft attempting to use a black hole as a portal of this type would have to reckon with nature at its worst. The hot and dense singularity would cause the spacecraft to endure a sequence of increasingly uncomfortable tidal stretching and squeezing before being completely vaporized.
Flying Through a Black Hole
My team at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and a colleague at Georgia Gwinnett College have shown that all black holes are not created equal. If the black hole like Sagittarius A*, located at the center of our own galaxy, is large and rotating, then the outlook for a spacecraft changes dramatically. That’s because the singularity that a spacecraft would have to contend with is very gentle and could allow for a very peaceful passage.
The reason this is possible is that the relevant singularity inside a rotating black hole is technically “weak,” and thus does not damage objects that interact with it. At first, this fact may seem counterintuitive. But one can think of it as analogous to the common experience of quickly passing one’s finger through a candle’s near 2,000-degree flame without getting burned.
My colleague Lior Burko and I have been investigating the physics of black holes for over two decades. In 2016, my Ph.D. student, Caroline Mallary, inspired by Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster film Interstellar, set out to test if Cooper (Matthew McConaughey’s character) could survive his fall deep into Gargantua — a fictional, supermassive, rapidly rotating black hole some 100 million times the mass of our sun. Interstellar was based on a book written by Nobel Prize-winning astrophysicist Kip Thorne and Gargantua’s physical properties are central to the plot of this Hollywood movie.
Building on work done by physicist Amos Ori two decades prior, and armed with her strong computational skills, Mallary built a computer model that would capture most of the essential physical effects on a spacecraft, or any large object, falling into a large, rotating black hole like Sagittarius A*.
The fictional Miller’s planet orbiting the black hole Gargantua, in the movie ‘Interstellar.’
Not Even a Bumpy Ride?
What she discovered is that under all conditions an object falling into a rotating black hole would not experience infinitely large effects upon passage through the hole’s so-called inner horizon singularity. This is the singularity that an object entering a rotating black hole cannot maneuver around or avoid. Not only that, under the right circumstances, these effects may be negligibly small, allowing for a rather comfortable passage through the singularity. In fact, there may be no noticeable effects on the falling object at all. This increases the feasibility of using large, rotating black holes as portals for hyperspace travel.
Mallary also discovered a feature that was not fully appreciated before: the fact that the effects of the singularity in the context of a rotating black hole would result in rapidly increasing cycles of stretching and squeezing on the spacecraft. But for very large black holes like Gargantua, the strength of this effect would be very small. So, the spacecraft and any individuals on board would not detect it.
The crucial point is that these effects do not increase without bound; in fact, they stay finite, even though the stresses on the spacecraft tend to grow indefinitely as it approaches the black hole.
There are a few important simplifying assumptions and resulting caveats in the context of Mallary’s model. The main assumption is that the black hole under consideration is completely isolated and thus not subject to constant disturbances by a source such as another star in its vicinity or even any falling radiation. While this assumption allows important simplifications, it is worth noting that most black holes are surrounded by cosmic material — dust, gas, radiation.
Therefore, a natural extension of Mallary’s work would be to perform a similar study in the context of a more realistic astrophysical black hole.
Mallary’s approach of using a computer simulation to examine the effects of a black hole on an object is very common in the field of black hole physics. Needless to say, we do not have the capability of performing real experiments in or near black holes yet, so scientists resort to theory and simulations to develop an understanding, by making predictions and new discoveries.
What is it about UFOs that we can’t stop looking for them?
Is it true that we are not alone in the Universe? When will we be certain about the existence of extraterrestrial life forms? Will “they” contact us someday? Interrogations of this nature had been made since the beginning of humankind. Different cultures have attempted to explain the existence of life as we know it outside the planet. In most cases, their closest guess has been through those famous sightings of Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) that occur from time to time. These particular events have proven to be reason enough for thousands of people around the world to obsess with this topic since ancient times. Even as we speak, there are lots of people trying to capture a UFO sighting and prove non-believers wrong.
This global UFO obsession can be traced back to ancient Egypt, around 1480, BCE. An ancient document called Tulli Papyrus (even though it’s not a papyrus per se), which belonged to the pharaoh Thutmose III, describes the sighting of “fiery discs” in the sky.
Being that Ancient Egyptians were experienced astronomers, it seems unlikely that they could’ve mistaken this with an astronomical or weather circumstance. Yet it was so long ago, that even by reading the document’s translation, we can’t be sure what they really saw:
“In the year 22, of the third month of winter, sixth hour of the day […] among the scribes of the House of Life it was found that a strange Fiery Disk was coming in the sky. It had no head. The breath of its mouth emitted a foul odor. Its body was one rod in length and one rod in width. It had no voice. It came toward His Majesty’s house. Their heart became confused through it, and they fell upon their bellies. They [went] to the king, to report it. His Majesty [ordered that] the scrolls [located] in the House of Life be consulted. His Majesty meditated on all these events which were now going on.
After several days had passed, they became more numerous in the sky than ever. They shined in the sky more than the brightness of the sun, and extended to the limits of the four supports of heaven […] Powerful was the position of the Fiery Disks."
In Ancient India, they also had their own version of UFO sightings. Among the Indian Vedic literature, there are multiple descriptions of “flying machines” that were eventually named Vimanas (sanskrit word for "measuring out, traversing"). These aircrafts also were found in 3000-year old temple carvings. These documents haven’t been completely translated, so we can’t fully understand what Ancient Indians were talking about. Fortunately, the limited documents available (translated by Dr. Ruth Reyna from the University of Chandigarh) do reveal very interesting facts about these mythical writings.
It seems that some of these documents contain directions for building an interstellar spaceship calledAstras. According to Dr. Reyna, these aircrafts were anti-gravitational, and could be used withlaghima(an ancient unknown power within the human condition strong enough to make people levitate). These texts also suggested the key to being invisible (antima) and becoming as heavy as lead (garima).
Fast forward to the Renaissance. In 1561, the city of Nuremberg witnessed one of the most intriguing sightings at that time. A “celestial phenomenon” lighted up the German sky, which was later described by diverse authors as an extraterrestrial battle. After the shocking event, a news article describing the event was spread. The text included an illustration with a woodcut engraving by Hans Glaser:
"(...) At first there appeared in the middle of the sun two blood-red semi-circular arcs, just like the moon in its last quarter. And in the sun, above and below and on both sides, the color was blood, there stood a round ball of partly dull, partly black ferrous color. Likewise there stood on both sides and as a torus about the sun such blood-red ones and other balls in large number, about three in a line and four in a square, also some alone. In between these globes there were visible a few blood-red crosses, between which there were blood-red strips, becoming thicker to the rear and in the front malleable like the rods of reed-grass, which were intermingled, among them two big rods, one on the right, the other to the left, and within the small and big rods there were three, also four and more globes. These all started to fight among themselves, so that the globes, which were first in the sun, flew out to the ones standing on both sides, thereafter, the globes standing outside the sun, in the small and large rods, flew into the sun.”
It’s no surprise that even at the hardest times, UFOs were messing with people. During World War II, metallic spheres and lights were spotted in more than one occasion by bomber crews in the European and Pacific area. These aerial mysteries were later called "foo fighters," a term that turned out to be commonly used for UFO sightings at that moment.
The first sighting of this kind occurred in November 1944, when the Bristol Beaufighter crew and intelligence officer Fred Ringwald were flying along the Rhine north of Strasbourg. These pilots reported “fast-moving round glowing objects” that were suspiciously following them. These mysterious objects were described as fiery and glowing. Pilots reported that the aircrafts never displayed hostility, but seemed to be flying in formation for a while, and then took very interesting turns in the air before vanishing. This sighting (alongside other similar cases at that time) gained popularity but couldn’t be fully explained.
UFO obsession has clearly reached the contemporary world. A very particular case occurred four years ago in Houston, Texas. People registered on their cell phone a ring of lights that flew during a thunderstorm. The photographs revealed an object formed with lights that seemed to be supporting a bigger structure, but the video footage states a different story. The lights that originally were arranged in a circle start to move independently in and out of formation
Dr. Carolyn Sumners, vice president for Astronomy at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, shared a very intriguing opinion on the matter: “I think the trick in UFOs is figuring out what else they could be… It’s easy to say that could be the aliens.” Also, former FBI Special Agent Ben Hansen had some interesting insights to share:
"One of the most intriguing aspects of the case is that a series of still photos began appearing on the Internet the next day from different Instagram and Twitter users. Allegedly, the photos were taken by different people from different parts of the city. The nature of social media makes it difficult to track down the original posters of much of the content we receive, but it does further support the claim that there were many witnesses to a spectacular UFO event that evening."
Did all of these cases really happen? Are these documents proof of something we’ve been waiting to answer for a long time? Or are they just manipulated footage that keep believers happy? Either way, UFO sightings will probably still happen in the future; hopefully, we’ll find a clear explanation to them.
NASA: The 2002 NT7 asteroid could “hit” Earth in February
Every few months we have new theories of those impacts that could be devastating for Earth, and there is a large number of asteroids that roam the universe.
But something is worrying the official scientific community, which is still silent. NASA declared that a 2.5-km-wide space rock, the 2002 NT7 asteroid, is heading towards Earth, although with a “low probability of impact” on Earth. first months of this 2019.
NASA scientists even provided estimates for the potential impact, announcing that a major collision could take place on February 1 of this year, something that leaves us with little chance of stopping this asteroid with the technology we currently possess. .
But NASA’s apocalyptic prediction receded after four days of intrigue, repeated risk-impact calculations, and repetition of trajectory calculations several times, as alarms began to sound not only in the agency spatial if not in the higher echelons of power. But did the verification and the final result really come to fruition?
Conspiracy theorists believe that the US Government’s Strategy and National Action Plan for Near-Earth Object Preparation are insufficient if the 2002 NT7 were to be directed on Earth. Watch the following video and leave us your comment below.
To fully appreciate the glory and grandeur of this celestial display, which is also known as theaurora borealis, you have to settle beneath the ever-changing lights and watch them curve and curl, slither and flicker. [Amazing Auroras: Stunning Northern Lights Photos]
"I was camping, just lying out in a field in a sleeping bag on a late September night and looking up at the stars," said Terry Onsager, a physicist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado.
"All of a sudden, the most spectacular lights and swirls and rays just filled the sky, dancing and darting here and there," Onsager told Space.com. "It was just unbelievable."

Onsager had his aurora experience in northern Norway — one of the best places in the world to see the northern lights. You could follow in his footsteps, or blaze your own trail somewhere along the "auroral zone" that encircles Earth's northern reaches. But you need to know when and where to go. For example, the summer of 2018 may be a good time for a vacation, but a better time to see auroras is actually between winter and spring.
Read on to find out when and where to see the northern lights, and what powers this dazzling display.
If you're planning an aurora-viewing trip, make sure not to schedule it in the middle of summer. You need darkness to see the northern lights, and places in the auroral zone have precious little of it during the summer months.
You also want clear skies. Winter and springtime are generally less cloudy than autumn in and around the northern auroral zone, so a trip between December and April makes sense, said Charles Deehr, a professor emeritus and aurora forecaster at the University of Alaska Fairbanks' Geophysical Institute. Ideally, time your trip to coincide with the new moon, and make sure to get away from city lights when it's time to look up, he added.
"Dress warmly, plan to watch the sky between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time, although an active period can occur anytime during the dark hours," Deehr wrote in the Geophysical Institute's guide to aurora viewing, which has lots of great information. "Active periods are typically about 30 minutes long, and occur every two hours, if the activity is high. The aurora is a sporadic phenomenon, occurring randomly for short periods or perhaps not at all."
You can get an idea of how active the northern lights are likely to be in your area by keeping tabs on a short-term aurora forecast, such as the one provided by the Geophysical Institute here: http://www.gi.alaska.edu/AuroraForecast
And you can have an aurora experience without even leaving your house if you so choose. The Canadian Space Agency offers a live feed of the skies above Yellowknife, in Canada's Northwest Territories: http://www.asc-csa.gc.ca/eng/astronomy/auroramax/.
Where to go in Europe
So where should you go? If you live in Europe, the easiest thing to do is head to the far northern parts of Norway, Sweden and Finland.
"In general, Scandinavia is set up," Deehr told Space.com. "They're in good shape for this."
Northern Norway, especially the area around Tromso, is a particularly popular destination, he added.
"There are a lot of tours, and a lot of English-speaking people who are willing to take you out," Deehr said, adding that the scenery in the region is "fantastic."
"Abisko has developed a reputation for being the No. 1 aurora-watching destination on the planet, due to the fact that it is located in a very special microclimate with less precipitation than any other location on Earth that is located within the aurora zone," photographer Chad Blakley told Space.com via email. (The company Blakley co-founded, Lights Over Lapland, has been offering aurora tours in Abisko since 2010. In 2018, the company released footage from a spectacular all-sky aurora during a geomagnetic storm March 14.)
Iceland is also a good choice, Deehr said, as long as you make sure to set aside enough time to compensate for cloudy skies. (The island nation's weather can be uncooperative.)
Russia, by contrast, "is pretty much out," Deehr said. While a decent swathe of the auroral zone lies in northern Russia, such areas are relatively hard to get to and lack the tourism infrastructure most travelers are after, he explained.
Where to go in North America
There are also plenty of options for good aurora viewing in North America. But you should probably steer clear of far eastern Canada, which tends to be quite cloudy, Deehr said.
"Between James Bay and the west coast of Alaska — anywhere along that auroral zone is a good place to be," he said. (James Bay is the far southern portion of Canada's huge Hudson Bay.)
Or a traveler could take a train across the auroral zone to the town of Churchill, on the western shore of Hudson Bay — an area famous for its polar bear population.
"It's great, adventurous country," Deehr said of the Canadian auroral region.
In Alaska, anywhere from Fairbanks north offers good viewing. In Fairbanks itself, residents see the northern lights on about eight of every 10 nights, Deehr said.
The northern lights result when charged particles streaming from the sun collide with molecules high up in Earth's atmosphere, exciting these molecules and causing them to glow.
"It's like the fluorescent lights in our offices — they've got current running through them that excites the atoms, and the atoms glow," Onsager said.
The different colors of the northern lights come from different molecules: Oxygen emits yellow, green and red light, while nitrogen is responsible for blue and purplish-red hues.
Earth's magnetic field lines channel these solar particles toward the planet's north and south magnetic poles, which explains why auroras — the aurora borealis and its southern counterpart, the aurora australis — are high-latitude phenomena.
Indeed, the aurora borealis is visible most nights, weather permitting, within a band several hundred miles wide that's centered at about 66 degrees north — about the same latitude as the Arctic Circle.
This "standard" aurora is generated by the solar wind — the particles streaming constantly from the sun. But solar storms known as coronal mass ejections (CME) can ramp up the northern lights considerably and make them visible over much wider areas. Last year, for example, a CME allowed skywatchers as far south as Illinois and Ohio to get a glimpse. However, if you're planning an aurora-viewing trip weeks or months in advance, you can't count on any help from a solar storm and should therefore head to a destination somewhere near the northern ring. [The Sun's Wrath: Worst Solar Storms in History]
The southern auroral ring lies above Antarctica and is very difficult for skywatchers, or anyone else, to get to. That's why this article focuses on the northern lights — for reasons of practicality, not antipodean antipathy. (Southern Hemisphere dwellers take heart: The aurora australis can sometimes be viewed from New Zealand and Tasmania.)
There is also a mysterious, aurora-like brightening phenomenon in Earth's atmospher called "Steve" that isn't attributable to aurora, although scientists aren't sure of its cause.
Earth isn't unique in hosting auroras.
The huge gas giant planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune) each produce their own auroras due to their magnetic fields and thick atmospheres. However, the colors of the gases change because of differences in their atmospheres and magnetospheres.

TheLunar Reconnaissance Orbiterwill face down the 10th eclipse of its lifetime this weekend, and the team at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland is prepared for the brief lapse in sunlightwhen the moon goes into shadowon Sunday (Jan. 20).
Spacecraft operations are one of the functions deemed essential for government operations, so many of the LRO employees continue day-to-day work without pay amid the U.S. government shutdown. Additionally, contractors — whose work has been paid for ahead of time through their respective companies — continue their assignments with LRO, project scientist Noah Petro told Space.com.
Petro, who is a space scientist at Goddard — is on call in case something happens with LRO, although he hasn't been asked to come in yet. He is part of a class of federal employees that can respond to operational events as required. That said, much of the preparatory work for LRO's eclipse operations took place months before this weekend's event; its team gathered in meetings, studied this weekend's eclipse and went over the history of LRO eclipse events to prepare, he said. [Super Blood Wolf Moon Lunar Eclipse: When, Where and How to See It]

The solar-powered LRO is in excellent health, but Petro said the team knows it is working with a spacecraft that will turn 10 years old this year. Originally, LRO would keep most of its instruments turned on to perform observations all of the time. But lately, a small number of instruments have been turned off to preserve LRO's battery.
During some past eclipses, LRO's thermal imager — the Diviner Lunar Radiometer — examined the temperatures of the lunar regolith and soil. Diviner usually can "see" the top layer of the regolith, which is a few tens of centimeters thick. However, during an eclipse, the top 1 cm to 2 cm below the surface can change temperature rapidly. The eclipses thus allowed Diviner to look at a different region of the soil than usual.
Now that LRO is older, however, Diviner is turned off during the eclipse along with the spacecraft’s six other instruments, Petro said. LRO won't be performing observations while the moon is dark; instead, it will remain in a power-saving mode to preserve its battery. Before the spacecraft speeds into shadow, the LRO team will turn on its heater for a while to "preheat" the spacecraft, before shutting it off for power saving. With these precautions, Petro said the team expects LRO will sail through just fine, similar to past eclipses.
Petro likened the situation with LRO to operating a cellphone for extended periods when you're away from an electrical outlet or an opportunity to charge the phone. Many people will put their cellphones into power-saving mode, and turn off nonessential apps, to keep the battery going longer.
"We're confident we can get through it, because we did in the past," Petro said.
"These eclipses are a good experience," he added. "They force us to look at the spacecraft. But I don't want to say they're risky. They are unusual operations, and that is always a challenge."
Due to the cycle of geometric positions between Earth, sun and moon, the next total lunar eclipse won't come until 2021. Petro said that will provide a nice break for the team. They are not really worried about LRO's health during this time, but the lack of eclipses will mean a lack of necessary planning meetings to deal with them — allowing for more time to focus on the ongoing observations LRO performs every day.
Later in 2019, Petro and other employees at Goddard plan to highlight LRO's contributions — which include mapping lunar water ice and cataloging the moon's terrain in high resolution — and highlighting that work along with the science performed by the Apollo moon missions of the 1960s and 1970s. This year not only marks the 10th anniversary of LRO's launch, but also the 50th anniversary of the first crewed landing on the moon, on July 20, 1969.
For now, Petro said he sees the eclipse as an opportunity to get the public interested in the moon and to raise awareness about science activities, especially as NASA plans a Lunar Orbital Platform-Gateway human space station in the 2020s.

A former Air Force sergeant who claimed to have seen top-secret photos of an alien base on the far side of the moon has died in a bicycle crash.
Karl R. Wolfe was killed in the crash on October 10 in Lansing, New York, after he was struck from behind by a tractor trailer traveling southbound on North Triphammer Road near Sharon Drive. He was 74.
Wolfe was rushed to Cayuga Medical Center where he later died from injuries sustained in the crash.
Although the crash is under investigation, no charges have been filed and the Tompkins County Sheriff's office did not release the name of the tractor trailer driver, the Ithaca Journal reported.
Karl R. Wolfe (above) was killed in the crash on October 10 in Lansing, New York
In 2001, Wolfe gained fame when he came forward with claims that he had he had seen photographic evidence of an alien structure on the far side of the moon.
In a video interview, Wolfe said that in the mid-1960s, he had a top secret clearance and worked for Tactical Air Command at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.
Wolfe said his job was working as a electronic technician in photographic surveillance labs, and he spent most of his time working on machines that processed surveillance footage of Vietnam.
One day, Wolfe recalled that his superior told him to report to an NSA facility on the base to help with an issue with equipment used to process imagery from the first lunar orbiter mission.
Wolfe said he reported to the facility, which he described as a large hangar-type building with many foreign citizens in civilian clothes, accompanied by interpreters - a surprising sight to the military man.
The former airman recalled that he was alone in a darkroom with another Airman second class, when the other enlisted man said: 'By the way, we've discovered a base on the back side of the moon.'
The far side of the moon is seen in a 1972 photo taken by Apollo 16. Wolfe said that he saw an alien moon base in photos taken by the first lunar orbiter
Wolf (above) was working as a photo technician for the Air Force when he says he was called in to repair equipment that was used to process images from the first lunar orbiter
'I said, 'Whose? What do you mean?'' Wolfe recalled. He said he was fascinated by the statement but was fearful that someone would walk in on their conversation.
Then, Wolfe said, the Airman showed him a photo mosaic assembled from multiple passes by the lunar orbiter.
'He pulled out one of these mosaics, and showed this base which had geometric shapes - there were towers, there were spherical buildings, there were very tall towers and things that looked somewhat like radar dishes, but they were very large structures,' Wolfe said.
'Every day when I went home I thought, 'I can't wait to hear about this on the news,'' Wolfe said.
After serving in the Air Force, Wolfe attended the University of Buffalo with a dual major in Social and Cultural Anthropology, and Electronics Engineering.
Wolfe went on to become a self-help consultant. He never married, and had no children.
Mysterious dark cigar-shaped anomaly flies at high speed over Reservoir of Guarapiranga, São Paulo, Brazil
A drone owner has captured something what is difficult to explain.
On January 11, 2019, the drone is flying above the Reservoir of Guarapiranga which is a reservoir in the southern area of the city of São Paulo, in the State of São Paulo, Brazil when the drone’s camera captures a dark cigar-shaped object that moves through the sky at a tremendous speed.
The drone owner wonders whether it is just a digital “freak” or an error in the drone’s camera or any other natural phenomenon.
Even though I also don’t know what it might have been, it seems like it shoots out of a cloud formation.
The video shows the normal speed, slow motion and still images of the mysterious anomaly.
Yesterday, I wrote an article titled “Area 51: ‘I Can’t Discuss It, Sir.'” It was focused on how from 1984 to 1985 plans were initiated – and ultimately implemented – by the U.S. Government to grab as much land as possible around Area 51, Nevada. Today, I’m doing a follow-up to that article. Now, it’s time to take a look at a now-declassified document of 1987 titled MilitaryLand Withdrawals. As was the case in the previous article, we see the Honorable John F. Seiberling taking the lead. Such are their importance, his words are presented without interruption:
“This morning we are resuming our hearings on H.R. 1790, introduced by our colleague from Maryland, Mrs. Byron. The bill is an omnibus measure, which would withdraw certain public lands in four different states for use by the Defense Department for military purposes. Under the Eagle Act of 1958, such military withdrawals involving tracts of 5,000 acres or more can be done only through an act of Congress.
“Our first hearing on this bill on November 14, 1985, focused on the so-called Bravo-20 range in northern Nevada, which the Navy has used for bombing practice and related training. Today’s hearing focuses on the other area in Nevada covered by H.R. 1790; namely, the Nellis Air Force Range complex in the southern part of the state. This is an area of more than 2.9 million acres divided into two portions, the north and south range, separated by lands which are now designated as the national test site and used primarily by the Department of Energy for underground nuclear testing and other purposes. The south range of the Nellis complex overlaps the western half of the Desert National Wildlife Refuge. That unit of the national wildlife refuge system is about 1.6 million acres in extent.
“Since 1974 there has been pending before the Congress an administration proposal to designate about 1.4 million acres within this unit as wilderness. Members of the subcommittee who served on the Public Lands and national Parks Subcommittee in the 98th Congress will recall that we considered the status of the Nellis range and related matters at a hearing on August 6, 1964.
“By way of background let me recapitulate matters discussed at that hearing and some later developments. At the 1984 hearing we were presented with the issue of what some witnesses described as the seizure by the Air Force of more than 89,000 acres of public lands outside but adjacent to the Nellis south range. In fact, I will go further and say the illegal seizure by the Air Force of these public lands and the illegal exclusion of the rightful owners of various properties that were located on them or within them.
“Testimony from the administration demonstrated that in fact the Air Force had acted to close that large area, known as the Groom Mountain area, to public access even though the Air Force and Defense Department had no legal authority whatsoever to do so. They closed the area because of a decision which they testified was reached at the level of the Secretary of the Air Force or above – shades of Watergate. The decision was based on concerns that otherwise the security of the Nellis complex and the national test site would be threatened.
“After these actions, the administration asked the Congress to regularize matters by withdrawing the Groom Mountain area under the Engle Act. At the 1984 hearing also, we raised the matter pf the still pending administration proposal to designate as wilderness lands within the desert refuge and partly overlapped by the Neillis complex. In response to my initial questions, the Air Force testified that they had been consulted in the process of formulating the administration’s wilderness proposal and that they had no reason to object to such a designation. Based on this, the subcommittee was prepared to incorporate into the Nellis withdrawal legislation provisions designating wilderness within the desert refuge in accordance with the administration’s proposals. However, the Air Force and Defense Department then had an apparent change of mind and urged that such designation not be made. The Department of the Interior continued to support the wilderness recommendation.
“As a result of this apparent divergence of views within the administration, in the end we did not act on the Nellis complex as such. Instead, the Nellis withdrawal bill was amended to deal only with the Groom Mountain area. And that amended bill was ultimately passed by the House and agreed to by the Senate. It was signed on October 17, 1984, as Public Law 98-485.
“Under the terms of that law, the Groom Mountain area is withdrawn for military use until December 31, 1987. By January 1, 1987, the Interior and Air Force Departments must complete and issue an environmental impact statement concerning continued or renewed withdrawal of the Groom Mountain area. This environmental impact statement must address certain possible measures to mitigate development, and agriculture in Nevada.
“Strictly speaking, the questions of possible renewal of the withdrawal of the Groom Mountain area is not before us at this time. However, I think it appropriate for us to examine today the way Public Law 98-485 is being implemented, and where things stand in terms of the development of the required EIS and the consideration of mitigation measures. We will also be most interested to learn whether the former divergence of views within the administration has been resolved as regards the administration’s proposal for wilderness in the Desert National Wildlife Range.

“Finally, as I noted at our first hearing on the bill before us, it would be important for us to remember that while we have been to a certain extent attempting to examine the proposed withdrawal of the Nellis complex separately and apart from other areas in H.R. 1790, and, of course, apart from other proposed military withdrawals which are not dealt with by this bill, we must remember that, in fact, Nellis and the other proposed withdrawal areas are part of a larger picture.
“It would be a mistake to fail to consider the cumulative impact of the Nellis complex, the test site, and the other military withdrawals on the State of Nevada and other parts of the country affected by these withdrawals, as well as by other restrictions on the use of lands and airspace, in the interest of national defense or for other purposes.
“I now recognize our distinguished colleague, Mrs. Vucanovich.
“Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
“I want to thank you for holding this hearing on an issue that is of critical importance to the state of Nevada. I also want to welcome Congressman Reid to our committee, and extend a warm welcome to our Nevada constituents who have come to give their views on this to the committee. I look forward to hearing their testimony.
“As the chairman mentioned, this bill withdraws 2.945 million acres of land and park now in Lincoln County, NV, for use by the Department of the Air Force as the training and testing area. The Air Force has been under numerous Executive orders, public land orders, and administrative actions.
“The Nellis Air Force Range comprises the largest air and ground space available in the free world for peacetime military operations and training and, therefore, it is of extreme importance to the defense of this nation.
“It is important to note that this particular withdrawal does not represent any additional new lands to be withdrawn. During the 98th Congress hearings were held on this withdrawal, in addition to a proposal by the Air Force to withdraw 89,600 acres known as the Groom Mountain Range.
“Because of the controversy surrounding the Groom Mountain Range brought to the attention of the committee by me and many Nevadans who testified, this committee agreed to require the Air Force to submit a separate environmental impact statement on the Groom Mountain Range. As we have heard, a temporary withdrawal was approved for the Groom Mountain Range until December 31, 1987. Because of the controversy surrounding the Groom Mountain Range, the 2.945 million-acre withdrawal was postponed.
“It is expected that the final environmental impact statement on the Groom Mountain Range will be completed some time this summer. Since it is the intent of the Congress to consider the withdrawal of the Groom Mountain range only after the completion of the EIS, H.R. 1790 withdraws only the land on the existing Nellis range.
“The Air Force has completed the environmental work on the lands that were previously withdrawn, and has compiled with FLPMA, NEPA, and the Eagle Act. The controversy over this legislation during the last Congress was never over the lands that were previously withdrawn, only over the Groom Mountain Range.”
At last year’s annual “PROJECT” scientific expo in Russia, organizers showed off what they claimed was Russia’s “most advanced robot,” named Boris. Boris wowed expo attendees by conversing with hosts, liberally handing out fist bumps, and even dancing on stage to “Skibidi” by Little Big, Russia’s answer to “Gangnam Style.” Absurdist K-pop dance hits aren’t the only thing being ripped off, though: it turns out Boris wasjust some guy in a suit. Whoops.
The 3 1⁄2-inch floppy disk hot glued to the chest box was a nice touch, though.
Not to be outdone, the 38th Annual Technology Exhibition in the Ghanaian capital of Accra rolled out its own questionable displays of allegedly “advanced” technology. The exhibition featured the usual variety of telecom tech and social media apps, but the main event was without a doubt a parade sponsored by the Apostle Dr. Kwadwo Safo Kantanka, owner of Ghana’s first car maker Kantanka Automobile and frequent maker of dubious claims. At the Technology Exhibition, Kantanka showed off what was alleged to be the most advanced military technology in Ghana: soldiers wearing powered exoskeletons and a massive, heavily-armed personnel carrier. The personnel carrier seemed like it could hold up alright to small arms fire for a few minutes, but as for the cyborg supersoldiers, well, just check it out for yourself.
Those guys wouldn’t even make it into the top ten at a cosplay convention. That one dude’s “hydraulic cable” is just hanging off his leg and is obviously empty split loom tubing, and as a cosplayer myself, I know a spray painted motorcycle helmet when I see one. Part of me wants to laugh, the other part just feels embarrassed for the poor guys who had to wear those costumes in the Ghanaian heat. I have to wonder, though: what did the exhibition attendees think?
The whole parade reminds me of several times I got paid to impersonate fake business executives at grand opening spectacles in China. Everyone watching knew it wasn’t real and that I was probably just American off the street, yet somehow a collective delusion would take over and everyone would agree that yes, this 20-something unshaven white guy must be the real Fitzgerald Prescott, VP of Far East operations for the Cass Hotel Management group. Champagne would be poured, pictures would be taken, charters would be signed, then we’d all empty out into the streets and wonder what we just saw. Isn’t that how all reality works, though? We all agree we see the same things every day when in fact we have no idea how subjective our perception may be.
Yours truly, pretending to be Fitzgerald Prescott, signing the hotel charter and everything. True story.
While it’s fun to laugh at these silly costumes and wonder how anyone could have possibly tried to pass them off as real, this story only really highlights just how unequal the modern battlefield has become. With the world’s superpowers boasting technology that makes anyone else’s look like bad cosplay, it’s no wonder that terrorism and asymmetrical warfare has become the new norm. Just wait until the real cyborg supersoldiers start marching through city streets.
What was initially exciting news about a cotton seed sprouting on the Moon has ended as quickly as it began. China’s Chang’e lunar lander contains a sealed tank with plant seeds and scientists did confirm that a cotton seed has begun sprouting. That meant that it was the first ever plant to begin growing on the moon.
January 7 footage from the moon shows a green leaf that appeared inside China's Chang'e 4 probe.
Unfortunately, with the cold lunar nights which began on January 13th, it has now been confirmed that the seeds would have become frozen from not having any power supply as well as the extreme cold. Temperatures during the night time period can dip as low as minus 279 degrees Fahrenheit while the daylight period can be as hot as 212 degrees. The days and nights on the Moon each last 14 Earth days.
Liu Hanlong, who is the head of the experiment at Chongqing University, explained in a press conference that the temperature inside of the canister holding the seeds reached -52 degrees Celsius, ultimately ending the experiment which had run for 212.75 hours.
The canister aboard the Chinese lunar lander also contains seeds to grow potatoes as well as a lab plant named Arabidopsis. But when the cotton was sprouting, it did look rather sickly in comparison to the seeds that have been grown on Earth. In addition to the extreme temperature changes, the seeds faced other major obstacles such as the stress of being launched into space, high radiation, and low gravity.
The Chinese also included fruit fly eggs as well as yeast to form an ecosystem inside of the lander. They were hoping that if the flies were to hatch, they could use the oxygen that would be created by the plants. The decaying plant biomass would create food for the fruit flies, and the waste from the flies would be processed by the yeast, as well as converting oxygen into carbon dioxide for the plants. If they somehow end up growing plants on the moon, they could potentially provide oxygen for the astronauts. The Arabidopsis would provide oil for the astronauts, while the potatoes would give them food to eat, and the cotton would clothe them.

Astronauts regularly tend to plants (like lettuce) on the International Space Station in order to study how they grow in microgravity and many of those seeds and plants have orbited Earth since spaceflight first began. In fact, astronauts enjoyed the first ever salad grown in space in 2015. As for the moon, however, the closest they ever got to growing plants there was in 1971 when Stuart Roosa, who was an Apollo 14 astronaut, carried hundreds of tree seeds with him while orbiting the moon. Several of those seeds were brought back to Earth and planted here, earning the name “Moon Trees.”
The Chang’e 4 lander and the container holding the seeds are located inside of the Von Kármán Crater which is on the far side of the moon. The Yutu 2 rover that accompanied the lander to the moon on January 2, 2019 is currently exploring other areas.
On the night of January 20, there will be a rare celestial event—a lunar eclipse will coincide with the Moon at perigee. The lunar eclipse, also known as a “blood moon” because of the reddish hue it displays, will take place at the same time as the full moon’s close approach to Earth.
At this point, the Moon appears slightly bigger than normal, earning it the name “supermoon.” As a result, January’s full moon will be a super blood moon.
The full moon in January is also known as a full wolf moon, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac. This is because it heralded a period when wolves would howl with hunger outside villages.
