Where did the water we believe is on the Moon come from? Most scientists think they know the answer - from the solar wind. They believed the hydrogen atoms that make up the solar wind bombarded the lunar surface, which is made up primarily of silica. When that hydrogen hits the oxygen atoms in that silica, the oxygen is sometimes released and freed to bond with the incoming hydrogen, which in some cases creates water. But no one has ever attempted to replicate that process to prove its feasibility. A new paper by Li Hsia Yeo and their colleagues at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center describes the first experimental evidence of that reaction.
To perform this experiment on Earth, the authors needed two things: something equivalent to the solar wind and something comparable to lunar regolith. The solar wind is comprised of protons—basically hydrogen atoms with their electrons stripped off. Mimicking this on Earth proved tricky, as they had to build a custom miniaturized particle accelerator to simulate the solar wind.
While it might seem technically simpler, their next task was certainly more administratively challenging—obtaining a sample of actual Moon regolith from the Apollo missions. Dust collected during Apollo 17's final lunar trip had already been packed in an airtight storage container since the 1970s, but the authors went ahead and baked the sample again just to make sure there was no water present.
Fraser discusses the best use of the Moon.
Once the samples were obtained and the accelerator was set up, the final piece of the experimental puzzle was a spectrometer, which could show the presence of water. When ready, they blasted the sample with enough simulated "solar wind" to be the equivalent of about 80,000 years on the lunar surface. During that time, they watched for infrared dips around 3um, precisely what they saw, representing a tell-tale water sign.
However, it is also a tell-tale sign of hydroxyl (OH), which has the same spectral profile as water and is also one of the potential by-products of the solar wind hitting the lunar regolith. As a press release announcing the finding states, "they can't conclusively say if their experiment made water molecules." However, finding even hydroxyl molecules is a step in the right direction.
One other data point lends credence to the continual replenishment of water via the solar wind, instead of more sporadic replenishment from sources such as micrometeoroids - the spectrographic signal of water seems to vary with time. It is strong in the morning, decreases throughout the lunar "day", and then increases again over the lunar "night". The most obvious explanation for this cycle is that some water burns off during the day, being exposed to the Sun. Over the two-week-long lunar night, the amount of water starts to build back up again, as would be expected if it is created by an external force such as the solar wind, and not being stripped away right away.

Ultimately, this experiment lends more credibility to the idea that lunar water is created by the interaction between the lunar regolith and the solar wind and that the solar wind itself is always slightly replenishing the amount of water available on the Moon. Artemis astronauts, or whoever winds up back on the lunar surface, will undoubtedly be happy for that, no matter how that water got there.
Watch this amazing video of many orbs over Phoenix, Arizona two months ago. Many people have tried and succeeded at summoning orbs. It has nothing to do with chanting, ritual or anything else, it's about clearing your mind and mentally asking it to come. It's as easy as that. This is proof that if you try, you will succeed.
Scott C. Waring - Utah
Eyewitness states:
I prayed to God that if the intentions of these orbs were to be seen, that Dobblins point would be a perfect place to reveal themselves because it was crowded and over a populated area of downtown Phoenix. As the Sun set it was then I noticed an orb (similar to our first sighting in NM) began popping up along the ridge line adjacent from us which is the beginning of the video above. You can hear my reaction when I knew it was happening again that they were willing to reveal themselves over a populated area. For over an hour we watched these orbs first manifest ( same as some of our other sightings) on the hillside and then over the city as they would multiply, float back and forth between one another. Appear and disappear while changing size, cycling through full spectrum of light. Towards the end as you can see in the video they triangulated in an Inverted Triangle over the city and would hover.
Why are they now starting to disclose suppressed exotic technologies?
For over 80 years, covert research into exotic propulsion, anti-gravity systems, and spacetime manipulation has been housed within deep black programs, classified efforts shielded from both public and congressional oversight.
Now, on April 14, 2025, Michael Katzios, the new White House science chief, made a bold claim: “Our technologies permit us to manipulate time and space...” Shortly after, he doubled down, promising innovations that would let us “bend time and space” and “drive us further into the endless frontier.” These weren’t offhand remarks, they were published on the official White House site, signaling intent.
What does "Manipulating Spacetime" really mean? Spacetime is the four-dimensional framework of our universe. Per Einstein’s theory, mass and energy warp this fabric, creating gravity and affecting time. To manipulate it would mean bending reality itself, shortening distances, warping time, or enabling faster-than-light travel.
Just days before Katzios’ remarks, President Trump said: “We have a weapon that no one has a clue what it is... more powerful than anything even close.”Was he referencing to a spacetime weapon?
Trump isn’t the first high-level figure to hint at such capabilities. Back in 2019, Lt. Gen. Steve Kwast publicly discussed technology capable of transporting a person anywhere on Earth in under an hour, suggesting real-world applications of physics far beyond current norms. He also touched on wireless, space-based energy transmission.
Rumors have long circulated about transatmospheric vehicles, craft capable of seamless operation both within Earth’s atmosphere and in space. Though unconfirmed, these platforms may represent a technological bridge between known aerospace systems and genuine spacetime engineering. (Consider Gary McKinnon’s 2002 discovery during his hack of U.S. military systems: references to a secret space fleet and "non-terrestrial officers.")
But it is not only about manipulating time and space.
What might they also have:
Anti-Gravity Propulsion:
Altering inertia with plasma or exotic materials, referenced in Navy patents.
Warp Drives:
Bending space around a craft to move without motion.
Zero-Point Energy: Tapping the quantum vacuum for limitless energy, a paradigm-shifting source of power.
But why some groups want to keep it secret? There are compelling reasons for secrecy, none of them rooted in public interest:
Control of Power – Whoever controls this tech controls the future.
Economic Impact – It would collapse the fossil fuel, aviation, and defense sectors.
Weaponization Risk – These tools could be catastrophic in the wrong hands.
Psychological Shock – It would rewrite everything we know about science and our place in the cosmos.
Despite growing testimony and a trove of leaked documents, officials continue to dismiss these claims. The Deep State line remains unchanged: “No empirical evidence exists for reverse-engineering extraterrestrial technology.” But the evidence says otherwise.
Supporting evidence:
Exotic materials reportedly recovered in 1950s, held by Lockheed.
The 1953 Robertson Panel even set the tone for decades of deliberate obfuscation, publicly debunking UFOs while secretly studying their implications. The CIA used Project Blue Book to publicly debunk UFOs.
As early as 1966, the U.S. Air Force reportedly managed over 30 classified anti-gravity projects.
A 1971 Australian Defense report referenced America’s "Advanced Saucer Aircraft" and a Cold War “UFO crash program” into anti-gravity propulsion.
The US government, through its CIA's Office of Global Access (OGA), is reported to have a secret program to retrieve and reverse-engineer crashed UFOs. This program, which began in 2003, is said to have recovered at least nine non-human aircraft, some of which were intact. The OGA works with special operations forces like SEAL teams to conduct these retrievals, keeping the operations highly secret.
CIA allegedly blocked a 2024 transfer of exotic materials from Lockheed to Bigelow Aerospace.
Ben Rich, former head of Lockheed Skunk Works, reportedly stated: “We now have the technology to take ET home.”
Don Phillips, also from Lockheed, confirmed reverse-engineering efforts related to recovered UFO craft, allegedly including materials from the infamous 1947 Roswell incident.
Dr. Salvatore Pais, a Navy scientist, filed patents (2016–2019) for highly unconventional devices, including a Space-Time Modification Weapon. These patents describe the use of electromagnetic fields, plasma, and rotational force fields. Theoretically, this device could create a spacetime modification weapon more powerful than hydrogen bombs. The Navy invested USD 508,000 testing the concept between 2016-2019.
But what could be the reason they are starting to reveal it now? The sudden shift toward public statements about advanced capabilities seems deliberate.
Consider the possible motives:
Strategic Signaling: A subtle warning to adversaries: “We possess technology beyond your reach.”
Controlled Disclosure: Shaping the narrative gradually to maintain public trust and institutional control.
Leaks Are Coming: Private-sector breakthroughs or whistleblowers may soon expose the truth.
Justifying Black Budgets: Revealing exotic tech lends credibility to decades of hidden spending under national security.
But perhaps the most compelling reason: a major event, whether real, staged, or cosmic in nature or eventually an alien contact scenario is on the horizon. This may be phase one of psychological preparation.
Finally; the evidence suggests that these exotic advanced technologies already exist, whether reverse-engineered or the result of disruptive physics breakthroughs. But what’s happening now isn’t full disclosure. It’s a carefully managed narrative operation, an information war cloaked in the language of advanced science.
A previously shared video from the U.S. Navy showed four “tic-tac-shaped” objects emerging from the water before flying away. The U.S. Navy has acknowledged that its personnel have witnessed things that can’t be explained, but sailors “may not want to make waves” and testify.
The mystery of the unmanned aerial systems (UAS) spotted in the skies over New Jersey last year has been attributed to commercial, hobbyist, and law enforcement drones. Misidentified manned aircraft, helicopters, and even stars were also likely culprits. The sightings created a form of mini-hysteria as many looked to the skies over the Garden State.
The FAA has further confirmed that some sightings were likely previously undisclosed research drones. Whether the disclosure puts the matter to rest is unlikely, as there will always be those who believe they saw something unexplainable in the night sky.
Another mystery is gaining traction again, one related to a potential mystery of the deep. That situation is even more complex, as a video captured by United States Navy sailors two years ago is making the rounds online, and there may be no easy answers.
A previously shared video showed four “tic-tac-shaped” objects emerging from the water before flying away. There was no conclusive explanation previously, and we’re surprisingly no closer to determining what the objects may be, even as it was widely seen.
Documentary filmmaker Jeremy Corbell suggested that additional individuals who witness such unexplained phenomena firsthand may be reluctant to come forward.
“It’s a long-haul thing. UFOs have been taboo for so long. It’s now admitted they’re flying without impunity in a restricted airspace, and we have footage like this. Military footage of an unidentified anomalous phenomenon (UAP) from a Navy warship in a critical area, just off the coast of California. It’s gonna take time,” Corbell told NBC News.
Did U.S. Navy Sailors See UAPs Flying at Sea?
Several sailors who served aboard the Independence-class littoral combat ship (LCS) USS Jackson had previously claimed to have witnessed the incident with the objects in 2023. It was just the latest unexplained incident of such objects, with other reports occurring in 2004 and then again in 2019.
The USS Jackson’s Senior Chief Operations Specialist Alexandro Wiggins, a twenty-three-year veteran of the U.S. Navy and a radar expert, recently came forward to offer a few new details about what he saw off the California coast during his shift in the combat information center (CIC). After an object appeared on the screens, Wiggins went to get a closer look.
“To my surprise, which is something I’ve never witnessed, was a light I noticed on the horizon, it looked as if it were surfacing out of the water and going up,” Wiggins explained to 8 News Now.
“We only saw the one, and then we saw the second one. It was only when we zoom out that we realize, holy crap, there’s two more out here, a total of four.”
He added that after returning to the CIC, he employed the ship’s SAFIRE thermal imaging sensor to acquire and track a target. The objects displayed no exhaust signature and produced no thermal trail.
However, Wiggins claimed, no formal incident report was filed because the objects remained at a safe distance and weren’t seen as a threat to the ship.
“I am skeptical about what I saw that day,” Wiggins continued. “Maybe one day I’ll know what that was, and I’ll be like eighty or ninety years old, and it’ll be normalized like… the stealth fighter or Area 51. It’ll be public at some point, but then I’ll be old.”
It may take more witnesses to come forward, but as Corbell noted, sailors may not want to make waves. In the meantime, the U.S. Navy has acknowledged that its personnel have witnessed things that can’t be explained. Is it a top-secret drone program being developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), an enemy surveillance program, or something else?
NASA's Curiosity Rover has discovered long carbon chains on Mars. On Earth, molecules like these are overwhelmingly produced by biological processes.

The longest molecules ever found onMarshave been unearthed by NASA's Curiosity rover, and they could mean the planet is strewn with evidence for ancient life.
Molecule chains containing up to twelve carbon atoms linked together were detected in a 3.7 billion-year-old rock sample collected from a dried-up Martian lakebed named Yellowknife Bay, according to a study published March 24 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
These long carbon chains are thought to have originated from molecules called fatty acids, which, on Earth, are produced by biological activity. While fatty acids can form without biological input, which may be the case on Mars, their existence on the Red Planet means that signs of life may be lurking within its soil.
"The fact that fragile linear molecules are still present at Mars' surface 3.7 billion years after their formation allows us to make a new statement: If life ever appeared on Mars billions of years ago, at the time life appeared on the Earth, chemical traces of this ancient life could still be present today for us to detect," study co-author Caroline Freissinet, an analytical chemist at the French National Centre for Scientific Research in the Laboratory for Atmospheres and Space Observations, told Live Science.
The molecules — hydrocarbon strings of 10, 11 and 12 carbon atoms called decane, undecane, and dodecane — were detected by Curiosity's Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument.
No stone unturned
The Curiosity Rover arrived on Mars in 2012 at the Gale Crater, a massive 96-mile-wide (154 km-wide) impact crater formed by the planet's collision with an ancient meteorite. In the years since, the rover has traveled about 20 miles (32 km) across the crater, investigating places including Yellowknife Bay and Mount Sharp (Aeolis Mons), a 3.4-mile-high (5.5 km-high) mountain in the center of the crater.
Nicknamed "Cumberland", the sample analyzed for the new study was drilled by Curiosity in 2013 from Yellowknife Bay, and previous analyses found it to be rich in clay minerals, sulfur, and nitrates.
But despite many thorough tests, the hydrocarbon strings in the sample remained undetected for more than a decade. The hydrocarbons were actually discovered by accident as part of an attempt to find the building blocks of proteins — known as amino acids — in the sample.
The researchers behind the new study thought to test out a new method for finding these molecules by pre-heating the sample to 1,100°C (2,012°F) to release oxygen before analysis. Their results showed no amino acids, but, by pure luck, they discovered the fatty molecules hiding there instead.
"The excitement was super high when I saw the peaks on the spectrum for the first time," Freissinet said. "It was both surprising and not surprising. Surprising because those results were found on the Cumberland sample that we had already analyzed many times in the past. Not surprising because we have defined a new strategy to analyze this sample."
"New method, new results," she added.
The researchers suggest that the molecules may have broken off from the long tails of fatty acids named undecanoic acid, dodecanoic acid, and tridecanoic acid, respectively. Fatty acids are long chains of carbon and hydrogen with a carboxyl (-COOH) acid group at the end.

Life-forming chemistry
To test this theory, the researchers mixed undecanoic acid into a Mars-like clay in the lab before performing a test similar to that carried out by the SAM instrument As expected, the undecanoic acid broke down to decane, indicating that the carbon chains could indeed have originated from fatty acids.
On Earth, molecules like these are overwhelmingly produced by biological processes, but they can also occur naturally without life. However, non-biological processes usually only result in fatty acids with fewer than 12 carbon atoms, the researchers say. While the longest carbon chain detected by SAM had 12 carbons, the instrument is not optimized to detect longer molecules, meaning that it is possible longer chains were also present.
"There is evidence that liquid water existed in Gale Crater for millions of years and probably much longer, which means there was enough time for life-forming chemistry to happen in these crater-lake environments on Mars," study co-author Daniel Glavin, a researcher at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, said in a NASA statement.
Regardless of what made them, the detection of the carbon chains and their likely origins as fatty acids confirms that Curiosity can detect molecules of this kind, and that the molecules can remain preserved for billions of years in the Martian environment. The researchers hope to one day bring samples of Martian soil back home to Earth to properly analyze the contents, and hopefully solve the mystery of the Red Planet's elusive life once and for all.
"We are ready to take the next big step and bring Mars samples home to our labs to settle the debate about life on Mars," said Glavin.

Was There a Lunar Eclipse on Day of Jesus' Crucifixion? NASA, Bible Say Yes
Despite assertions to the contrary, science and religion are not always at odds. This has been demonstrated once again, as an intriguing NASA discovery appears to offer verification of the Biblical accounts of Jesus’ crucifixion, according to researchers from Oxford University.
Using models that chart the historical positions of the sun, moon, and Earth, NASA confirmed a lunar eclipse took place on Friday, April 3, 33 AD—a date traditionally believed to coincide with Jesus’ death. That evening, observers in Jerusalem would have witnessed the moon rising in a darkened sky, tinted red by the Earth’s shadow. This type of eclipse creates what is known as a blood moon, and this cosmic phenomenon has sparked renewed interest among scholars and Christians alike. The Bible does indeed say that the sun turned dark and a moon that appeared like blood on the day when Jesus was killed—as would actually be expected, if NASA’s calculations are correct.
The words that suggest an ancient lunar eclipse come from a verse that has gained traction again in recent years, particularly on platforms like TikTok, where users are rediscovering ancient prophecies through a modern lens.
“‘Christian texts mention that the Moon turned to blood after Jesus’s crucifixion—potentially referring to a lunar eclipse, during which the Moon takes on a reddish hue,’” NASA noted following their calculations, which were completed several years ago. This idea aligns with this passage in Acts 2:20: “The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.”
Lunar eclipse and blood moon seen over Kuwait in 2018.
Many Biblical historians believe the eclipse described in NASA’s records may be the same one referenced in scripture. Despite being written in the form of a prediction, the verse from Acts is spoken by the apostle Peter during a gathering 50 days after the crucifixion. Because of this timing, some experts interpret Peter’s statement as a direct recollection of recent events, including the eerie sky on the day Jesus died.
However, not all scholars accept such an interpretation. Some argue that Peter’s words in Acts were not an eyewitness account but rather a quote from the Book of Joel, written centuries earlier, and were meant to reference a future time when Christ would return. That passage—Joel 2:28–31—similarly describes cosmic signs: “The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes.”
But Oxford researchers Colin Humphreys and W. Graeme Waddington disagree with this interpretation. They have cross-referenced the Biblical account and the eclipse data to argue that the crucifixion and the lunar eclipse took place at the same time, and that the apostle Peter was not predicting the second coming of Christ but rather emphasizing how prophecy had already been fulfilled in their lifetimes. Their work presents the possibility that a real astronomical event—the April 3 eclipse—could have been seen by witnesses in Jerusalem, adding a dramatic visual component, as well as a prophetic element, to the crucifixion narrative.
Peter preaching the gospel to his followers after Jesus’ death, in painting by Jan Styka from late 19th century.
Humphreys and Waddington also highlight a lesser-known source from the New Testament apocrypha to back up their theory: a document sometimes referred to as the Report of Pilate. Though not part of the canonical Bible, the apocryphal text provides vivid imagery that mirrors Joel’s prophecy. It reads: “At his crucifixion the sun was darkened; the stars appeared and in all the world people lighted lamps from the sixth hour till evening; the moon appeared like blood.” The researchers believe this supports their hypothesis, offering yet another account of unusual atmospheric events occurring at the time of Jesus’ death.
The darkness itself is referenced in Matthew 27:45, which states: “From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land.” This passage aligns with descriptions of the crucifixion in multiple Gospels and further reinforces the association between celestial disturbances and this pivotal moment in Christian history.
A Magical Melding of Cosmic and Religions Themes
As Good Friday is commemorated around the world, the timing of the holiday remains intricately connected to both religious tradition and astronomical patterns. Good Friday always falls two days before Easter Sunday, which is determined by a formula that tracks the lunar cycle. Specifically, Easter takes place on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the spring equinox. This method of calculation has ancient roots and was designed to maintain Easter’s connection to the Jewish festival of Passover, which is governed by the Hebrew lunar calendar.
Master of the Legend of St. James: The Crucifixion, ca 1480, oil on wood.
Jesus’ crucifixion is believed to have occurred around Passover, and the Gospels describe his resurrection on the Sunday that followed. To reflect this timeline, early Christians sought to establish a calendar that would keep Easter in close relation to both Passover and the spring equinox. This alignment not only preserved theological significance but also highlighted the cosmic themes embedded in the crucifixion story.
As science and scripture continue to intersect, modern tools like NASA’s eclipse data provide a deeper look into the historical contexts behind Biblical events. In this case the total weight of the evidence suggests the Bible can be accurately interpreted as a history book as well as a sacred religious text.
With respect to the ancient lunar eclipse, whether one views such celestial signs as divine miracles or naturally occurring phenomena, their symbolism endures, and will continue to do so regardless of what the ultimate truth might be.

Pope Francis has died! However, not many people know that the Vatican has over 50 miles of underground archives containing the world’s history. Let that sink in… 50 miles. And this isn’t even a conspiracy theory.
The Vatican’s Secret Archives are real and located in one of the most famous religious and cultural places in the world—the Vatican. These archives stretch across 53 miles of shelving and include 35,000 volumes of catalogs. They hold documents that are over 1,200 years old.
The name “Secret Archives” adds to their mystery and makes people think of hidden secrets or dark stories. Because the indexes aren’t public and access is limited to certain scholars, many people imagine that the archives hold shocking or even strange things. Some even believe the Vatican is hiding aliens there! (Source)
But in truth, the archives are not actually meant to be “secret.” The word “secret” comes from a Latin word, secretum, which really means “private.” These archives were always meant to store the Pope’s official documents, letters, and important Church records.
Inside, you’ll also find some of the Church’s most valuable historical papers, with some dating back to the 700s. For a long time, not even religious scholars could read them. That changed in 1881 when Pope Leo XIII, a forward-thinking Pope, opened the archives to researchers. Since then, the documents have helped tell the story of both the Church and the wider world.
One of the most important documents in the Vatican’s Secret Archives changed the course of religious history. It’s the official paper that shows the Catholic Church kicking out Martin Luther. Luther was a German man who challenged the Church by writing his famous 95 Theses, which started the Protestant Reformation. In response, Pope Leo X wrote a statement called Decet Romanum Pontificem, officially excommunicating Luther. This allowed Luther to start his own church and created a major split in Christianity that still affects the world today.
Another fascinating document in the archives is called the Chinon Parchment. It records the trial of the Knights Templar, a Catholic military group that was accused of crimes like heresy during the Crusades. The parchment is huge—about the size of a dining table—and was lost for hundreds of years due to a filing error. It wasn’t rediscovered until 2001, hidden in a box with other papers. Once found, it was properly sorted and made available to researchers.
When the Vatican made the Chinon Parchment public in 2007, it revealed something surprising: in 1308, Pope Clement V had actually cleared the Knights Templar of heresy. This new information helped restore the group’s reputation, which had been damaged for centuries.
All these documents—and many more—are stored in a special place near the Vatican Library in Rome. The archives include regular stacks and reading rooms, but also an underground fireproof bunker to protect delicate materials. There’s even a school for clergy to study history, and because it’s the Vatican, there’s sacred art to enjoy as well.
Access to the archives isn’t open to everyone. Only carefully approved scholars are allowed in. Still, the Vatican has become a bit more open in recent years. In 2010, journalists were allowed to visit for the first time—partly due to public interest after Dan Brown’s book Angels and Demons. In 2012, the Vatican held a public exhibition for the archives’ 400th anniversary, showing off some of its most important documents.
In 2019, Pope Francis announced that the Vatican would open up its archives on Pope Pius XII. During an event honoring the 80th anniversary of Pius’s election, Francis said, “The Church is not afraid of history.”
What secrets do you think are hidden in the Vatican’s secret archives?
Throughout history, some people have had a deep knowledge of many subjects. One such person was a Russian man named Genrikh Mavrikiyevich Ludvig. He was very smart and skilled in ancient cultures, architecture, engineering, and old languages. Some people even compared him to Leonardo da Vinci. It’s said that Ludvig was able to access secret files from the Vatican and may have found information about ancient aliens.
Ludvig’s story became more widely known in 2011 when a Russian newspaper called Sovershenno Sekretno published an article about him. The writer described Ludvig as a large man with a bald head, a big forehead, and a beard. His eyes were intense and he often got into trouble with the Soviet government. In 1938, he was accused of being a Vatican spy and sent to a concentration camp.
The writer, who had been one of Ludvig’s students, remembered attending a lecture by him in the 1960s. At first, it seemed interesting, but then it became confusing as Ludvig talked about many different topics like language, history, plants, and science. The writer wasn’t sure if Ludvig was a genius or a mystic. However, he said meeting Ludvig changed his view of the world.
Ludvig claimed that during the 1920s, he was allowed to read secret documents in the Vatican Archives, a huge collection of very old records. These documents are usually hidden from the public for 75 years. He said he found strange texts about ancient codes, alchemy, and even stories about aliens and UFOs visiting Earth long ago. (Source)
According to Ludvig, some of these texts talked about aliens helping early civilizations like the Egyptians, Mayans, and Mesopotamians. He studied the Mayan symbols and believed they showed images of spaceships and astronauts. He even said there were signs of nuclear weapons being used in ancient times, like melted walls in Babylon.
Ludvig also had a deep interest in the Sumerians, one of the first known civilizations. He believed that they suddenly advanced around 4000 BC, learning to build cities, use irrigation, invent the wheel, and create writing. Their early writing was made up of picture-like symbols and dated back to around 3200 BC.
He also believed that the pyramids in Egypt were not just tombs, but tools for spiritual or cosmic communication. Ludvig thought Christian images of angels came from an earlier culture called the Etruscans.
During World War II, even while he was a prisoner in the GULAG, Ludvig worked as an inventor and engineer. Between 1941 and 1943, he created 17 military inventions. Today, many UFO researchers and people who believe in ancient aliens know his name.
In 2016, leaked emails from Hillary Clinton’s campaign showed that her advisor, John Podesta, had received messages about UFOs and extraterrestrial life. One of the emails came from astronaut Edgar Mitchell, who said that the Vatican was aware of alien life. He also spoke about the need to keep peace in space and prevent it from being used for war.
Despite these amazing claims, not everyone believes Ludvig’s story. There is not much solid evidence to prove he really saw the secret Vatican documents or discovered all this information.
Vatican’s involvement in UAPs & Alien life
In his other interview with James Landoli on “Engaging The Phenomenon,” Daniel Sheehan, who was a former Chief Council for the United States Jesuit order, revealed intriguing details about his conversations with the head of the Vatican archives regarding the Vatican’s knowledge of extraterrestrial life. Sheehan shed light on his involvement in a groundbreaking initiative to address the theological and philosophical implications of the discovery of extraterrestrial intelligence.
During the interview, James raised the topic of David Grusch‘s claim that the Vatican possessed knowledge of extraterrestrial phenomena. Sheehan discussed his access to the classified files of the Project Blue Book, where he encountered photos of UFO crash retrievals and concrete evidence of non-human piloted vehicles.
He proposed the formation of a task force involving all 54 major religious denominations to address the issue from a theological perspective. However, at that time, there was insufficient consensus, and the proposal was declined. Sheehan is currently working through his New Paradigm Institute to organize a global summit conference involving world religious leaders to discuss the recent recovery of an extraterrestrial spacecraft.
“The United States government is in possession of biological evidence and has actually taken into custody alive an extraterrestrial person. They’re keeping this secret, interrogating the being, and distorting the information to justify massive expenditures on weapon development under the guise of a perceived threat.”
– Daniel Sheehan
Sheehan highlighted the Vatican’s acknowledgment of the possibility of extraterrestrial life. He referenced a formal statement issued by the Catholic Church on November 10, 2009, authorized by Pope Benedict. The statement, issued by Father Jose Gabriel Alfuz, a director of the Pontifical Observatory in Rome, recognized the increasing discovery of exoplanets and called for a global discussion on the philosophical and theological implications of the imminent discovery of extraterrestrial life.
White Orb Watches Family BBQ Over Lakeland, Florida April 20, 2025, UFO UAP Sighting News.
Date of sighting: April 20, 2025
Location of sighting: Lakeland, Florida, USA

Guys this just in. An eyewitness at a family BBQ were enjoying the day when someone pointed out a white orb in the sky above. Then others came and they noticed it stayed over them as if it were watching them and recording the humans reactions to what they were seeing. You see, aliens love knowledge, like humans like money, knowledge is everything to them. The smaller orb drones are sent out from a mother drone and months later gathered after the orbs have recorded information about anything and everything they saw. Orbs record not just visual things, but also mental things like human feelings, fears, prayers...and yes every thought you have if you are outside with no obstruction between you and the orb above. How do I know? Because I have summoned them, and so have thousands of others worldwide. It validates everything I just said.
Scott C. Waring - Utah
Eyewitness states:
The object is still in the sky as of writing this, it doesn’t move from what we can tell, not even a little. My brother got out his binoculars and it looks circular in shape, almost like you can see through it, and had defined edges visible from the suns light. It was difficult to keep the binoculars steady enough to clearly make out what it is, but I feel like even if I could I couldn’t identify what it was. A high altitude jet flew fairly close to it at one point and it appears to me like the object is at a lower orbit than the jet was, that or it is a massive object. With the naked eye you can clearly tell it’s circular shape, but it doesn’t move with the wind.
Mind-blowing New Pyramid In Antarctica And More, Google Earth Map, UFO UAP Sighting News.
Date of discovery: April 20, 2025
Location of discovery: Antarctica
Source: Me using Google Earth
Coordinates: Under my Youtube video in the description.
Guys I spent a few hours outside pulling weeds, gardening and making sure a chicken hawk didn't grab my tortoise in my yard, but I hope all of you had a great Easter, loved spending mine this way.
I found two newer discoveries in Antarctica that I have not seen before and that nobody else has reported on. The shadow is an old discovery of mine, but I believe it is that of a cloaked alien...a very tall one mind you. Cloaking might hide the object from view, however physics says it will still throw a shadow. Also near it today I found a pyramid and a barrel structure. The pyramid structure is proof of ancient aliens and is about 110 yards along one side and about 85 meters tall. Thats about half the size of the great pyramid in Egypt. The barrel structure almost looks like the old US Marine barracks made of steel, but it might just be an entrance to something deeper, like an alien base. It's hard to say but I sure would love a ground level view of all these three discoveries.
Mass extinctions have shaped life on Earth for millions of years, erasing dominant species and paving the way for new life to thrive. From the asteroid that ended the reign of the dinosaurs to the current biodiversity crisis driven by human activity, each extinction reshapes the evolutionary landscape. As the climate changes and ecosystems degrade, researchers warn that humans could be steering the planet toward another mass extinction.
This sobering possibility raises a fascinating question: which species might inherit the Earth if humanity vanishes? Dr. Tim Coulson, an ecologist at the University of Oxford, suggests an unlikely candidate—octopuses.
Octopuses: Ocean’s Master Survivors
“Octopuses have a distinct advantage in the race for survival,” Coulson explains. Unlike humans, they exist in diverse habitats, from shallow coastal waters to the deep sea. Their adaptability could allow some species to endure even catastrophic changes. “If humans ceased hunting them, octopuses might have the opportunity to diversify and expand their habitats over time,” he adds.
While the notion of octopus civilizations may sound far-fetched, history shows that ocean-dwelling creatures can evolve rapidly after mass extinctions. Dr. Andrew Whiten, a zoologist at the University of St. Andrews, points out that mammals rose to prominence after dinosaurs vanished, paving the way for humans. Could octopuses follow a similar path?
Octopuses already display remarkable problem-solving skills. From using coconut shells as makeshift shelters to escaping aquarium tanks, these marine animals show a level of intelligence rarely seen in other species. Some even use tools to solve puzzles, a trait often associated with advanced cognitive abilities.
“An octopus’s nervous system functions more like a distributed processing network than a central brain,” explains Dr. Andy Dobson from Princeton University. “Their intelligence comes from their ability to coordinate multiple limbs and process vast amounts of sensory data.”
Their dexterity also sets them apart. “Octopuses can manipulate objects with unparalleled precision,” says Coulson. “While crows and other birds exhibit tool use, they don’t match the fine motor skills of an octopus.”
Challenges to Octopus Civilizations
Despite their intelligence, octopuses face significant obstacles in evolving into complex societies. Dr. Peter Godfrey-Smith of the University of Sydney highlights their solitary nature. “Octopuses lack the social structure necessary to build a culture,” he explains. “For them to form communities, they’d need to develop stronger social bonds and nurture their young differently.”
These changes, however, may be a long shot. Octopuses have existed for over 100 million years without evolving significant social behavior. Still, recent studies suggest that some species show signs of communal living, offering a glimmer of hope for their societal potential.
Human Impact and Evolutionary Roadblocks
Ironically, human activity could hinder octopuses’ evolutionary journey before it even begins. Pollution, ocean warming, and overfishing threaten marine life globally. Microplastics, in particular, may harm octopuses in ways scientists are only beginning to uncover.
If not octopuses, who might inherit the Earth? Dobson speculates that nematodes—tiny, resilient worms—could dominate, while Godfrey-Smith places his bets on highly adaptable birds like cockatoos.
Whether or not octopuses ever build underwater cities, their unique traits make them one of nature’s most intriguing survivors. As humanity confronts its impact on the planet, understanding the resilience of other species could offer insights into the future of life on Earth.
Mars Has the Remnants of a Lopsided Magnetic Field
By Andy Tomaswick

Scientists have known for a while that Mars currently lacks a magnetic field, and many blame that for its paltry atmosphere - with no protective shield around the planet, the solar wind was able to strip away much of the gaseous atmosphere over the course of billions of years. But, evidence has been mounting that Mars once had a magnetic field. Results from Insight, one of the Red Planet's landers, lend credence to that idea, but they also point to a strange feature - the magnetic field seemed to cover only the southern hemisphere, but not the north. A team from the University of Texas Institute for Geophysics thinks they might know why - in a recent paper, they described how a fully liquid core in Mars could create a lopsided magnetic field like the one seen in Insight’s data.
The Earth's core isn't completely molten despite what you may have learned in elementary school. There are two distinct cores - a solid "Inner" core and a molten "Outer" core. The inner core remains solid due to the immense pressures on the iron and nickel found there. So, the magnetic field that covers our whole planet is, in fact, created only by the Outer Core.
Researchers have long thought that a similar dynamic, solid inner and molten outer core, was present on Mars when it maintained a magnetic field billions of years ago. After about 3.9 billion years, the rocks that formed some of the large impact basins from that time, such as Hellas and Isidis, would contain rocks that would have magnetized while they were cooling due to the presence of the field. Since they don't, there is little evidence for a strong global magnetic field past that point. The going theory was that, as the planet's core cooled, the entire core became solid, eliminating the spinning molten metal that creates the magnetic field in the first place.
Fraser discusses the question of when Mars' dynamo shut down.
However, there was a strange feature in Mars' magnetic field—a massive difference in strength between the field in the northern and southern hemispheres. This dichotomy was first noticed during the Mars Global Surveyor mission back in 1997, but data from the Insight lander also confirmed a stark difference between the two hemispheres.
Various explanations have been offered for why the dichotomy existed. These ranged from the effects of large asteroid impacts to very early localized tectonic activity. However, the scientific community has not widely accepted previous explanations.
Enter the new theory from Chi Yan of the University of Texas and their co-authors. Theirs is a two-fold explanation. First, the red planet could have had a wholly molten core, and second, a massive temperature difference between the northern and southern hemispheres led to the heat escaping only in the southern hemisphere.
Magnetic fields can be artificial - as Fraser discusses here.
In Mars' case, a molten core would be a primary mover of the process known as a "planetary dynamo," which creates planetary-scaled magnetic fields. With a solid inner core like the Earth's, the dynamo effect could have been disrupted by inefficiencies in the system's fluid dynamics.
It could also explain how the temperature gradients allow such uneven heat extraction. If the southern hemisphere had much higher thermal conductivity, heat would be more likely to flow through it, causing the churning that creates the planetary dynamo to happen primarily on the southern side of the planet.
To prove their point, the authors created a model version of early Mars using a supercomputer at the Maryland Advanced Research Computing Center. They varied the fluid dynamics of Mars as well as the conductivity of its crust. They found that the conditions that most accurately matched the results from Insight and Global Surveyor occurred when Mars' core was wholly molten, and there was a significant difference in the thermal conductivity of the northern and southern hemispheres.
Keeping Mars' any artificial atmosphere Mars has would require a magnetic field - or something similar.
As with all research, there is plenty more left to do. The authors suggest further analysis of some of the seismic data from Insight to see if any additional data was already collected that could align with the molten core theory. Other potential paths forward could include improved modeling for a broader range of internal and external planetary conditions or a deeper understanding of Martian meteorites from various regions and times.
For now, this new theory seems to hold water—or molten iron, depending on who you ask. But there is a lot more work that needs to be done to prove this theory and its implications for the existence of life on Mars.

The surface of Mars is extremely cold, irradiated, and desiccated. But at one time, the planet was much warmer and wetter, with flowing water, lakes, and even an ocean covering most of its northern hemisphere. Because of this, scientists speculate that life may have emerged on Mars billions of years ago and could still be there today. Ever since the Viking 1 and 2 missions landed on the surface in 1976, the search for evidence of past (and maybe present) life has been ongoing.
As missions likeCuriosityand Perseverance continue to explore promising regions that were once lakebeds (the Gale and Jezero craters), there are still questions about where to look next. In a recent paper, researchers proposed searching for photosynthetic bacteria embedded in the snow and ice around Mars' mid-latitudes. Using "radiatively habitable zones" on Earth as a template, they argue that photosynthetically active bacteria could survive within exposed patches of ice.
On Earth, bacteria can survive and thrive in ice, even at depths of several meters. Earth's protective ozone layer protects these organisms from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation, allowing them to safely absorb what is known as photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). On Mars, which has a thin atmosphere (less than 1% of Earth's) and no ozone layer, about 30% more damaging UV radiation reaches the surface. However, numerical modeling predicts ice and snow around the equator can melt below the surface.
The presence of this liquid water at these depths could make these subsurface environments the most easily accessible locations for future astrobiology missions. To investigate this possibility, the team developed a radiative transfer model (RTM) based on previous research that employs the Delta-Eddington method (a simplified means of calculating radiative fluxes). This model allowed them to simulate vertically-stacked layers of snow, ice, and Martian dust.
Since solar flux has not yet been measured within ice on Mars, the team employed glacier ice in Greenland as an analog. Their results showed that in all cases, most of the solar radiation is absorbed within the top few meters of the ice, but increases based on grain size. Overall, they found that solar radiation can reach a maximum depth of about 6.5 meters (21.3 ft) in clean ice. At the same time, biologically damaging UV penetrated to about 3 m (~10 ft) in clean granular, packed ice (firn). Their results also indicated that PAR penetration varied considerably based on the amount of dust in the ice.
For ice with 0.01% dust, PAR reached just 25 cm (~10 inches) below the surface, while the peak penetration depth of UV was reduced to about 7 cm (2.75 inches). For ice with 0.1% dust concentrations, this was reduced to only 5 cm (~2 inches), with a peak UV penetration of 1.5 cm (0.6 inches). Overall, they found that Mars may have radiatively habitable zones within exposed patches of mid-latitude ice at depths ranging from a few centimeters for dusty ice to several meters for cleaner ice.
On Earth, microbes require temperatures of more than -18 °C (-0.67 °F) for cell division to occur. Meanwhile, favorable solar radiative conditions and the presence of liquid water are required for photosynthesis. And while conditions within the Martian polar ice are too cold for melting to happen at these depths, numerical models suggest that small amounts of melt and runoff can occur in exposed patches of mid-latitude snowpack just beneath the surface. As the team indicates, this could have significant implications in the search for life on Mars:
"Under similar ephemeral near-freezing conditions, widespread microbial habitats containing cyanobacteria, chlorophytes, fungi, diatoms, and heterotrophic bacteria are found in the shallow subsurface (top few centimeters to meters) of ice sheets, glaciers, and lake ice containing dust and sediment on Earth.
"In the summer, ice in the shallow subsurface melts due to solar heating at these locations. Photosynthesis then occurs in the subsurface, below a translucent ice lid, with nutrients scavenged from the dust and sediment present in the subsurface liquid water. During winter, the subsurface liquid refreezes, and photosynthesis ceases until the next summer."
Therefore, if ice and snow in equatorial regions experience seasonal melting, microbes like cyanobacteria could combine this water with nutrients from Martian dust in the ice to conduct photosynthesis. If such habitats exist, they would constitute the most easily accessible locations for finding evidence of life on Mars.
White UFO Over Wantagh, NY, USA April 17, 2025, UAP Drone Sighting News. VIDEO!
Location of sighting: Wantagh, New York USA
Date of sighting: April 17, 2025

This just in, a white long UFO was seen passing over New York this week. The object was said by the eyewitness to look like a dumbbell shape, but in this close up photo...I have to say I have never seen anything like it. The object looks almost organic and its long and white...and reminds me of some astronauts descriptions of UFOs. This looks real, not ai for sure, but...is it alive or is it a craft? Hard to say without more focused video of it moving.
Scott C. Waring - Utah
Eyewitness states:
Traveling very slowly, almost floating. Took a picture and a video to max zoom from an iPhone. Looking through binoculars you can see it had a dumbbell shape to it.
UFOs or Starlink? 🧐 Jackson, Mississippi April 17, 2025, UAP Sighting News.

Now this is odd. These lights almost look like Starlink satellites and yet, they don't seem to move much in the sky. Now a satellite will travel in orbit at 17,000 miles per hour, they orbit the Earth in 90 minutes, so they should be really moving, but they are not and this has me concerned. It may be that these are UFO, yes you heard me correctly, UFOs that are trying to disguise themselves as satellites. Aliens pride themselves on being more intelligent than humans. They have attitude and it looks like this time...they were wrong and we caught them red handed. They look alien to me.
Scott C. Waring - Utah
Eyewitness states:
I saw a straight string of separate lights rising from the horizon, ascending from a northwest direction towards the center of the sky. This was a string of separate lights/objects, white in color, who rose from a north western direction upwards from the horizon towards the center of the sky. The front most object then disappeared, while more objects started appearing from below the horizon. Eventually, the whole string disappeared, one object at a time.I have two video clips of the phenomenon. There was no noise/sound associated with this phenomenon.
NASA's models, which trace the positions of the Earth, moon, and sun through history, show a lunar eclipse occurred on Friday, April 3, 33AD — the year traditionally linked to Jesus' death.
The cosmic event would have been visible in Jerusalem shortly after sunset, and the position of the moon would have given it a reddish hue.
The Biblical historians believe the lunar eclipse identified by NASA was the same written about in the Bible.
The NASA discovery was made in the 1990s, but is now going viral on TikTok as today is known among Christians as the day Jesus was crucified.
'Christian texts mention that the Moon turned to blood after Jesus's crucifixion—potentially referring to a lunar eclipse, during which the Moon takes on a reddish hue,' NASA noted.
The American space agency added that scholars narrowed narrowed down a possible date of the crucifixion to Friday, April 3, 33AD, because a lunar eclipse o
Christians across the world are celebrating Good Friday to commemorate the crucifixion and death of Jesus. A discovery by NASA has provided proof of accounts of Jesus' death in the Bible
The Bible verse that discusses the moon appears in Acts 2:20, which states: 'The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.'
Scriptures details how the apostle, Peter, shared the words 50 days after the crucifixion, leading some experts to believe he was recalling events witnessed during Jesus's death.
However, many historians argue that the passage was meant to prophesize the second coming of Jesus.
That is because Peter was quoting from Joel 2:28–31, a passage that speaks of cosmic signs and spiritual awakening: 'The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes.'
Because the Book of Joel was written centuries before the crucifixion, many scholars believe Peter was explaining how the crucifixion was previously prophesied by Joel.
Colin Humphreys and W. Graeme Waddington, biblical scholars from the University of Oxford used NASA's findings, along with textual references of the crucifixion to argue that the moon did in fact to red blood following Jesus' death.
They theorized that Peter was not giving a prophecy about the coming of Jesus, but was telling the crowd that Joel's prophecy was filled.
NASA's astronomical models, which can track the positions of the Earth, moon and sun throughout history, revealed that a lunar eclipse occurred on Friday, April 3, 33AD
According to the Gospels, darkness fell over the land from noon to 3pm while Jesus hung on the cross, which the researchers said closely aligns with the imagery described in Joel's prophecy.
Humphreys and Waddington argued that Peter's use of the phrase 'the sun shall be turned into darkness' referenced Matthew 27:45: 'From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land.'
The researchers also pointed to lesser-known texts in the New Testament apocrypha, which contains writings about Jesus' life, such as his infancy, divine nature, and relationships with his family and disciples.
The New Testament apocrypha, however, was not included in the traditional biblical canon because it was not considered divinely inspired.
However, Humphreys and Waddington highlighted a verse, the so-called Report of Pilate, as further evidence of unusual celestial events during the crucifixion.
'At his crucifixion the sun was darkened; the stars appeared and in all the world people lighted lamps from the sixth hour till evening; the moon appeared like blood,' the verse reads.
Thus, they said, provides more evidence that Jesus died on the day of the ancient lunar eclipse.
Christians across the world are celebrating Good Friday to commemorate the crucifixion and death of Jesus.
Good Friday is always two days before Easter Sunday, which is determined by the first full moon after the first day of spring, and then it is the first Sunday following that full moon.
The method stems from early Christian efforts to align the holiday with Jewish Passover and astronomical events.
Jesus is believed to have been crucified around Passover, which is based on the Hebrew lunar calendar.
According to the Gospels, Jesus rose from the dead on the Sunday following Passover.
Early Christians wanted Easter to reflect this timing, so they sought a system that would keep Easter connected to Passover and Jesus' resurrection.
Jaw-dropping footage captures the moment two loved-up 'Nessies' emerge from the depths of their watery abode in Scotland.
Or so claims monster hunter, Eoin O'Faodhagain, who spotted the two 'captivating' shapes while watching the famous Loch Ness via webcam.
'On close examination of the footage, there are actually two creatures breaking the surface,' he said.
'The first disturbance that rose up out of the water was of a smaller height, and also not as long as the second.
'The second was longer and higher, out of the water by at least four feet, with a distinct hump at the rear, and a smaller one at the front.
'I believe the images represent two Loch Ness monsters.'
In Eoin's footage, two mysterious shapes can be seen surfacing in the distance, one after the other, separated by a short expanse of water.
In subsequent clips, captured a few minutes later, one shape resurfaces nearby and then moves steadily south, against the flow of the water.
In Eoin's footage, the two mysterious shapes can be seen surfacing in the distance, one after the other, separated by a short expanse of water
The existence of Scotland's legendary Loch Ness Monster has been hotly-debated for nearly a century. Affectionately referred to as Nessie, the large marine creature is said to inhabit the freshwater loch south of Inverness - and be a species as yet unknown to science
Mr O'Faodhagain, a veteran Nessie hunter, believes the footage could show a courtship display.
He said: 'It is the behaviour of both objects that make this sighting intriguing.
'What is going on? Could it be something to do with breeding – a male Nessie showing off to a female Nessie to attract her attention?
'Or is it just feeding behaviour? But if it was this, I would imagine this behaviour would be visible all the time on the surface.'
He added: 'It was captivating observing these three examples of unexplained phenomena in Loch Ness.'
The sighting was recorded using a webcam maintained by Visit Inverness Loch Ness (VILN) at Shoreland Lodges, near Fort Augustus at the loch's southern end.
It unfolded over the span of several minutes last Saturday, April 12.
Given the distance from the camera, Eoin estimates that the first creature was 10 to 12 feet long, while the second was 15 to 18 feet long.
Mr O'Faodhagain, a veteran Nessie hunter, believes the footage could show a courtship display or a 'mating dance' - an act preceding sexual intercourse
Famously, the legendary marine creature is said to inhabit the freshwater loch southwest of Inverness
'There are no known creatures in Loch Ness that come near those dimensions,' he said.
'It is unexplained what these live creatures are – you have to label them Nessies.'
Mr O'Faodhagain, 60, often logs on to watch the water from his home in County Donegal, Ireland.
Over the years, he's racked up multiple entries in the Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register.
The earliest report of a monster in Loch Ness is AD 565, but 'Nessie' became a global phenomenon in 1934 upon the publication of Surgeon's Photograph, which purported to show the beast (although doubts surrounding the snap's authenticity remain).
In the near-century since, many visitors have taken blurry photographs of what they think to be the beast in the 23-mile loch.
The VILN webcams can be watched live online at visitinvernesslochness.com.
Rumours of a strange creature living in the waters of Loch Ness have abounded over the decades, yet scant evidence has been found to back up these claims.
One of the first sightings, believed to have fuelled modern Nessie fever, came in May 2, 1933.
On this date the Inverness Courier carried a story about a local couple who claim to have seen 'an enormous animal rolling and plunging on the surface'.
Another famous claimed sighting is a photograph taken in 1934 by Colonel Robert Kenneth Wilson.
It was later exposed as a hoax by one of the participants, Chris Spurling, who, on his deathbed, revealed that the pictures were staged.
Other sightings James Gray's picture from 2001 when he and friend Peter Levings were out fishing on the Loch, while namesake Hugh Gray's blurred photo of what appears to be a large sea creature was published in the Daily Express in 1933.
Robert Kenneth Wilson, a London physician, captured arguably the most famous image of the Loch Ness Monster. The surgeon’s photograph was published in the Daily Mail on April 21, 1934 - however it was later proven to be a fake
The first reported sighting of the monster is said to have been made in AD565 by the Irish missionary St Columba when he came across a giant beast in the River Ness.
But no one has ever come up with a satisfactory explanation for the sightings - although in 2019, 'Nessie expert' Steve Feltham, who has spent 24 years watching the Loch, said he thought it was actually a giant Wels Catfish, native to waters near the Baltic and Caspian seas in Europe.
An online register lists more than 1,000 total Nessie sightings, created by Mr Campbell, the man behind the Official Loch Ness Monster Fan Club and is available at www.lochnesssightings.com.
So what could explain these mysterious sightings?
Many Nessie witnesses have mentioned large, crocodile-like scutes sitting atop the spine of the creature, leading some to believe an escaped amphibian may be to blame.
Native fish sturgeons can also weigh several hundred pounds and have ridged backs, which make them look almost reptilian.
Some believe Nessie is a long-necked plesiosaur - like an elasmosaur - that survived somehow when all the other dinosaurs were wiped out.
Others say the sightings are down to Scottish pines dying and flopping into the loch, before quickly becoming water-logged and sinking.
While submerged, botanical chemicals start trapping tiny bubbles of air.
Eventually, enough of these are gathered to propel the log upward as deep pressures begin altering its shape, giving the appearance of an animal coming up for air.
But what's exciting is that K2-18b is very unlikely to be a one-off in the universe – meaning many others that are similar likely exist too.
Peter Vickers, a philosophy of science professor at Durham University, said there are likely 'millions' of planets outside our galaxy hosting some kind of lifeforms.
'If it does turn out that K2-18b has life, then it is virtually guaranteed that there are million more exoplanets harbouring extraterrestrial life,' he told MailOnline.
Planet K2-18b is a suspected a 'hycean' world - a rocky planet with a hydrogen-rich atmosphere and vast oceans of water
(artist's impression)
But what's exciting is that K2-18b is very unlikely to be a one-off in the universe - meaning many others like it likely exist
Professor Vickers added: 'Hundreds of millions is pretty safe estimate and not overblown.'
Planet K2-18b is in the same galaxy as us – the Milky Way – but there are billions to trillions of estimated galaxies in the universe.
The academic stressed that we've only sampled a 'tiny, tiny percentage of planets' in our galaxy alone, using various space and Earth-based telescopes.
So the universe as a whole surely has many more planets waiting to be found that have conditions right for life to thrive.
'It would be like dipping a cup at random in an ocean and getting a fish, and then asking the question whether there are probably lots of other fish in the ocean, he said.
And if you think biological activity does exist out there in the vast reaches of space, the likelihood is that experts in the field would agree with you.
A survey by Professor Vickers and colleagues conducted last year suggests this is the general consensus among astrobiologists (scientists who study extraterrestrial life).
Out of 521 astrobiologists who responded, 86.6 per cent agreed or strongly agreed it’s likely that extraterrestrial life (of at least a basic kind) exists somewhere in the universe, while less than 2 per cent disagreed and 12 per cent were neutral.
On Earth, DMS and DMDS are only produced by living organisms - mostly microbial life such as marine phytoplankton (like the ones pictured). Life on K2-18b could be similar
No life beyond Earth has ever been found and there is no evidence that alien life has ever visited our planet. But this may be due to extraterrestrial life being too scared of 'dangerous' and 'violent' humans
(artist's impression of the typical 'alien' concept)
Planet K2-18b: Key facts
Discovered: 2015
Star: K2-18
Orbital duration: 33 days
Constellation: Leo
Mass: 8.6 times that of Earth
Radius: 2.6 times that of Earth
What's more, 88.4 per cent of non-astrobiologists agreed – showing astrobiologists aren't biased toward believing in extraterrestrial life compared with other scientists.
'So, based on this, we might say that there’s a solid consensus that extraterrestrial life, of some form, exists somewhere out there,' said Professor Vickers and colleagues in a piece for The Conversation.
British science writer and biologist Matthew Ridley believes it would be 'fairly bizarre' if Earth was the only planet in the universe with life on it.
'Given the scale of the universe, it would be more surprising if life did not exist in it,' he says in today's Daily Mail.
'If [life] started billions of years earlier on other planets, then it is probable that it has had time to generate not just microbes and algae, but technology-generating beings too, and probably super-intelligent ones.'
However, Viscount Ridley said perhaps 'we should keep quiet and not let the aliens know we exist' in case our planet is destroyed or conquered.
Mark Buchanan, a physicist and science writer, also thinks there are many more exoplanets like K2-18b that harbor similar lifeforms.
'It's only in the past decade or so that our telescopes have become powerful enough to find and examine planets orbiting other stars,' Buchanan told MailOnline.
Using data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), astronomers identified huge quantities of chemicals only made by living organisms on Earth. They have picked up the chemical fingerprints of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) - molecules that are primarily produced by microbial life such as marine phytoplankton
'Plausible estimates put the number of potentially life supporting planets in the hundreds of millions or more.
'The universe really is a big place and we're just beginning to explore what is out there.'
Buchanan called the new announcement from University of Cambridge scientists a 'fascinating finding' as it suggests there's 'more advanced life forms elsewhere'.
The new findings provide the 'strongest hint yet' of biological activity outside our solar system according to the researchers – although they are yet to be definitively confirmed.
What have scientists found at Planet K2-18b?
Investigations into planet K2-18b are being led by Dr Nikku Madhusudhan, an astrophysicist at the University of Cambridge, who called it a 'hycean' world – a rocky planet with a hydrogen-rich atmosphere and oceans of water.
Then, in 2023, the James Webb telescope detected carbon dioxide and methane in its atmosphere, as well as a shortage of ammonia – a 'very profound' finding because it indicates there's a water ocean underneath a hydrogen-rich atmosphere.
Earlier observations of K2-18b identified methane and carbon dioxide in its atmosphere. This was the first time that carbon-based molecules were discovered in the atmosphere of an exoplanet in the habitable zone (a planet outside our solar system that's at just the right distance from its star for life to realistically proliferate)
On Earth, DMS and DMDS are only produced by life, primarily microbial life such as marine phytoplankton – suggesting a similar form of life on the distant planet.
In fact, scientists have been unable to think of any natural geological or chemical process that could create DMS without living organisms.
What's more, concentrations of DMS and DMDS in K2-18b’s atmosphere are estimated to be thousands of times stronger – more than 10 parts per million by volume compared with one part per billion on Earth – conjuring a scenario of an ocean world teeming with life.
However, the team 'remain cautious' and want to obtain more data before officially announcing that life has been found on another world.
The observations have reached the ‘three-sigma’ level of statistical significance – meaning there is a 0.3 per cent probability that they occurred by chance.
To reach the accepted classification for scientific discovery, the observations would have to cross the five-sigma threshold, meaning there would be below a 0.00006 per cent probability they occurred by chance.
Between 16 and 24 hours of follow-up observation time with JWST may help them reach the all-important five-sigma significance.
It’s one of the most profound questions in science – did life ever exist on Mars?
Now, experts have unearthed evidence that the Red Planet was once habitable.
Scientists have found carbon residue in Martian rocks, indicating that an ancient carbon cycle existed.
And it means the Red Planet was likely once warm enough to sustain life.
Researchers have long believed that, billions of years ago, Mars had a thick, carbon dioxide-rich atmosphere with liquid water on its surface.
This carbon dioxide and water should have reacted with rocks to create carbonate minerals.
However, rover missions and analysis from satellites so far haven’t detected the amounts of carbonate on the planet’s surface predicted by this theory.
But that’s all just changed, thanks to data collected by NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover.
The NASA Curiosity rover (pictured) found large deposits of a carbon-rich mineral on Mars. Here, it can be seen exploring the Red Planet's surface
NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover sees its tracks receding into the distance at the 'Ubajara' site. This site is where the rover made the discovery of siderite, a mineral that may help explain the fate of the planet’s thicker ancient atmosphere
Information recovered from three drill sites reveals the presence of siderite, an iron carbonate mineral.
It was picked up within the sulfate-rich rocky layers of Mount Sharp in Mars’ Gale Crater.
‘The discovery of abundant siderite in Gale Crater represents both a surprising and important breakthrough in our understanding of the geologic and atmospheric evolution of Mars,’ said Benjamin Tutolo, associate professor at the University of Calgary and lead author of the paper.
To study the Red Planet’s chemical and mineral makeup, Curiosity drills three to four centimetres down into the subsurface then drops the powdered rock samples into its CheMin instrument, which uses X-ray diffraction to analyse rocks and soil.
‘Drilling through the layered Martian surface is like going through a history book,’ said Thomas Bristow, research scientist at NASA Ames and coauthor of the paper.
‘Just a few centimetres down gives us a good idea of the minerals that formed at or close to the surface around 3.5 billion years ago.’
The discovery of carbonate suggests that the atmosphere contained enough carbon dioxide to support liquid water existing on the planet’s surface.
Carbon is vital for life on Earth because it's the fundamental building block of all living organisms, forming the basis of their molecules, including DNA, proteins, and carbohydrates.
NASA's Curiosity rover has collected 42 powderised rock samples with the drill on the end of its robotic arm
Mars is called the Red Planet primarily due to the presence of iron oxide, or rust, on its surface. Experts say the new findings suggest it was likely once warm enough to sustain life
It also regulates the planet's temperature.
As the atmosphere thinned – which is thought to have happened around 4 billion years ago - the carbon dioxide transformed into rock form.
‘The abundance of highly soluble salts in these rocks and similar deposits mapped over much of Mars has been used as evidence of the ‘great drying’ of Mars during its dramatic shift from a warm and wet early Mars to its current, cold and dry state,’ Dr Tutolo added.
‘It tells us that the planet was habitable and that the models for habitability are correct.
‘The broader implications are the planet was habitable up until this time, but then, as the CO2 that had been warming the planet started to precipitate as siderite, it likely impacted Mars’ ability to stay warm.’
He said it’s clear that small changes in atmospheric CO2 can lead to huge changes in the ability of the planet to harbour life.
‘The most remarkable thing about Earth is that it’s habitable and it has been for at least four billion years,’ he added.
‘Something happened to Mars that didn’t happen to Earth.’
NASA’s Curiosity rover landed on Mars on August 5, 2012, and has travelled more than 20 miles (34 kilometres) on the Martian surface.
The findings were published in the journal Science.
The Mars Curiosity rover was initially launched from Cape Canaveral, an American Air Force station in Florida on November 26, 2011.
After embarking on a 350 million mile (560 million km) journey, the £1.8 billion ($2.5 billion) research vehicle touched down only 1.5 miles (2.4 km) away from the earmarked landing spot.
After a successful landing on August 5th, 2012, the rover has travelled about 11 miles (18 km).
It launched on the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) spacecraft and the rover constituted 23 per cent of the mass of the total mission.
With 80 kg (180 lb) of scientific instruments on board, the rover weighs a total of 899 kg (1,982 lb) and is powered by a plutonium fuel source.
The rover is 2.9 metres (9.5 ft) long by 2.7 metres (8.9 ft) wide by 2.2 metres (7.2 ft) in height.
The Mars curiosity rover was initially intended to be a two-year mission to gather information to help answer if the planet could support life, has liquid water, study the climate and the geology of Mars an has since been active for more than 3,700 sols
The rover was initially intended to be a two-year mission to gather information to help answer if the planet could support life, has liquid water, study the climate and the geology of Mars.
Due to its success, the mission has been extended indefinitely and has now been active for over 3,700 sols.
The rover has several scientific instruments on board, including the mastcam which consists of two cameras and can take high-resolution images and videos in real colour.
So far on the journey of the car-sized robot it has encountered an ancient streambed where liquid water used to flow, not long after it also discovered that billions of years ago, a nearby area known as Yellowknife Bay was part of a lake that could have supported microbial life.
The Trump Administration quietly revealed it has futuristic technologies that literally bend timeduring a speech on 'the golden age of American innovation.'
The director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, Michael Kratsios, declared that the US currently has the ability to 'manipulate time and space' and 'leave distance annihilated.'
Kratsios made the bold statement on Monday during the Endless Frontiers Retreat, a scientific conference in Texas focused on promoting US technological innovations to maintain global competitiveness.
The rest of the director's speech touched on American breakthroughs of the past and undoing Biden-era policies that the Trump Administration claims stifled innovation - adding that the regulatory process on new tech has been a burden since the 1970s.
Kratsios actually referenced this again at the end of his speech, saying that Americans will soon have the choice to 'craft new technologies and give themselves to scientific discoveries that will bend time and space.'
Kratsios did not clarify his points, but they may have been a hyperbolic reference to recent breakthroughs in AI and quantum computing.
Currently, there is no device publicly known that can literally 'manipulate time and space' or make distance irrelevant.
President Donald Trump recently lauded the capabilities of the new 6th generation F-47 fighter jet on March 21. Trump also made reference to a mysterious secret weapon on April 9
President Donald Trump has not been shy about its focus on Earth-shattering innovations, especially when it comes to space and technology.
During his first term in 2019, President Trump created a new branch of the military, the US Space Force, with the mission 'to secure our nation's interests in, from, and to space.'
The White House also has a very public relationship with Elon Musk, whose commercial spaceflight company SpaceX has become a key player in NASA's ongoing missions and has its sights set on delivering astronauts to Mars within the next five years.
However, the comments that the US already has the ability to manipulate time and space stoked the flames of government conspiracy theorists online.
'Did he just say the quiet bit out loud?' one person on X asked.
'Is this the US secret weapon Trump was talking about?' another person asked, referencing a cryptic statement by President Trump on April 9.
'We have a weapon that no one has a clue what it is. And this is the most powerful weapon in the world, which is more powerful than anyone even close,' Trump claimed.
DailyMail.com has reached out to the White House for comment.
Michael Kratsios stoked wild speculation online after he said that the US currently has the ability to 'manipulate time and space' and 'leave distance annihilated'
Kratsios added that Americans are still seeking to explore 'endless frontiers' and that the country will soon have the technological inventions on hand to reach them.
'Our technologies, and what we do with them, will be the tools with which we will make the destiny of our country manifest in this century,' Kratsios said.
The director noted, however, that the US would first need to safeguard US intellectual property from nations like China and also keep American companies from exporting these innovations overseas.
The speech by Trump's science policy director is just the latest in a growing pile of 'evidence' some say may prove there's more going on in Washington and in the US military than the public knows about.
Recently, scientists told DailyMail.com that time travel is possible - and people have already done it.
In 1915, Albert Einstein presented his theory of general relativity to the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin and proved that time travel is possible.
As bizarre as this situation sounds, Einstein's theories show that this type of time travel is not only possible but extremely common.
Dr Alasdair Richmond, a philosopher and time travel expert from the University of Edinburgh, told DailyMail.com: 'Einstein teaches us that how fast time passes in your surroundings varies with your velocity.'
Essentially, this means the faster you travel, the slower you experience time.
So, if you're on a plane or train, you will be experiencing time slower than anyone standing still and experiments have shown this is true.
Astronauts aboard the International Space Station travel around the Earth at speeds close to 17,500 mph, fast enough to experience slight time travel.
If Kratsios was referring to some sort of faster-than-light travel (also known as warp speed), well, scientists have recently proven that this was possible too.
According to NASA, time travel involves moving through time faster than one second per second. In Interstellar (pictured) this is done by getting close to a black hole but, in reality, the same can be achieved just by getting on a plane
A 2024 study published in the journal Classical and Quantum Gravity, suggested that real-life warp drive is not just a far-fetched concept of science-fiction after all.
Researchers from the University of Alabama and the Applied Physics Laboratory believe warp speed could be possible by bending the rules of physics using Einstein's theory of general relativity.
They proposed creating a 'warp bubble' around a spaceship using a shell of regular matter, like dense particles or dark matter, to compress spacetime in front of the ship and expand it behind.
This bubble would let the ship travel faster than light without breaking the laws of physics, and crucially, it doesn't need exotic 'negative energy' that past theories required.
The American space agency shared the shocking image of a massive openingin the Martian landscape on Sunday for its Astronomy Picture of the Day.
Rather than leave people with a mystery, NASA speculated that the giant hole appears to lead to a mysterious 'lower level' that may support life.
'Holes such as this are of particular interest because they might be portals to lower levels that extend into expansive underground caves,' NASA researchers said.
'If so, these naturally occurring tunnels are relatively protected from the harsh surface of Mars, making them relatively good candidates to contain Martian life,' they added.
It's quite a statement by NASA, which has consistently tried to manage the public's expectations of finding extraterrestrial life both on other planets and here on Earth.
So far, the focus has been on microbial life that may be hiding in frozen oceans on Earth's neighboring planets and moons.
NASA released an image of a massive hole in the surface of Mars on April 13 as part of the agency's Astronomy Picture of the Day series
NASA pointed out that this image, originally taken in 2017 by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, actually shows several holes in the planet's surface.
'There are numerous holes pictured in this Swiss cheese-like landscape, with all-but-one of them showing a dusty, dark, Martian terrain beneath evaporating, light, carbon dioxide ice,' the researchers wrote.
That most noticeable ditch is the perfectly rounded hole in the upper-right portion of the satellite photo - a giant cavity spanning roughly 328 feet.
Making the discovery even more mysterious is the fact that this hole also has a circular crater surrounding it.
As for what caused it, the NASA team speculated that it may have been created by a meteor impact, but the bigger question now is what's sitting at the other end of this pit.
'These pits are therefore also prime targets for possible future spacecraft, robots, and even human interplanetary explorers,' NASA added.
Since Mars now lacks a strong magnetic field and thick atmosphere, its surface is constantly bombarded by high levels of cosmic and solar radiation, which can be deadly to life as we know it.
Mars is believed to have several similar holes that may be craters from meteor impacts, potentially leading a vast system of underground caves and lava tubes
The USGS Astrogeology Science Center has mapped hundreds of possible sites that experts believe could be entry points to subterranean caves on Mars
However, life may have been able to survive below the soil thanks to the natural shielding of these caves and tubes - meaning astronauts might be able to find evidence or even fossils of living organisms here.
America's experts on underground mysteries and seismic activity - the US Geological Survey (USGS) - were even brought in to find these caves.
In 2019, the USGS Astrogeology Science Center revealed a stunning map detailing over 1,000 candidates that their experts believe could be cave entrances scattered throughout the surface of Mars.
Unfortunately, USGS noted that their review used data coming in from probes flying 250 miles above the Martian surface.
Glen Cushing, a space scientist from the USGS Astrogeology Science Center, said: 'It is impossible to see how far any of them extend beneath the surface.'
'Not knowing which instances are caves and which are merely alcoves with modest lateral extent, we are careful to express that these are 'candidate' cave entrances,' he added in the 2019 release.
Other space missions, including the European Space Agency's Mars Express, have also found evidence of ancient lava tubes beneath the planet's dormant volcanoes.
However, this newly released photo makes it undeniably clear that there's at least one hole on Mars which leads to an unknown subterranean layer.
The soonest human astronauts may be able to see this enormous hole for themselves could be in 2028.
SpaceX founder Elon Musk recently appeared on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, where he rapidly accelerated the timeline for people arriving on the Red Planet.
Musk said that SpaceX's 'default plan' was to 'launch several Starships to Mars at the end of next year.'
These are the same type of space vehicles SpaceX has been testing, with some of the recent tests ending in a fiery explosion.
These missions would also have no crews and would see if the vehicles could successfully land on the Red Planet. Musk added that he's hoping his company will launch a total of five of these remote-controlled starships to Mars in 2026.
Instead, the researchers believe that the ingredients for the water in our oceans and rivers were actually part of Earth from the very beginning.
In their study, the team analysed a rare asteroid made of a material very similar to the rocky debris which came together to make Earth.
Using a powerful beam of X-rays, the scientists found that these materials were 'incredibly rich' in hydrogen, which forms water when combined with oxygen.
Co-author Tom Barrett, a PhD student at the University of Oxford, told MailOnline: 'The big conclusion of this study is that hydrogen, and by extension the ingredients for water, were incorporated into Earth by its primary building blocks, making it an inevitable consequence of our planet’s formation.
'This may mean that water on the surface of planets is not as unlikely as previously thought.'
Scientists say they have finally solved the puzzle of where Earth's water came from, and they say it wasn't delivered by asteroids
(stock image)
To explain how life was able to develop on Earth, and whether it could exist on other planets, scientists first need to figure out how liquid water came to exist.
Many believed that the rocks which came together to make the Earth 4.55 billion years ago were too poor in hydrogen to explain all the water we see on the planet today.
Since we can't see what the early Earth was like directly, the best way to test this theory is to look for meteorites that have been drifting through space since the planet formed.
In their new study, published in the journal Icarus, researchers studied a meteorite dubbed LAR 12252 which had been found in Antarctica.
LAR 12252 is a rare type of meteorite called an 'enstatite chondrite' which has a composition similar to that of the early Earth.
A French research team had previously shown that this rock contained hydrogen hidden inside tiny spherical structures called chondrules.
The researchers analysed a rare meteorite found in Antarctica (pictured) which has the same composition as the early Earth. Their study revealed that this space rock was much richer in hydrogen, one of the ingredients of water, than expected
Did water arrive on Earth with asteroids?
Current evidence suggests that at least some of Earth's water was brought to the planet by asteroid impacts.
However, this only accounts for some of the water on the surface.
The majority of Earth's water is below the surface and isn't accounted for by known asteroid impacts.
Researchers now think that this water might have formed from hydrogen which was inside the planet's building blocks.
This means that while some water did come from asteroids, most of Earth's water was created as a natural consequence of the planet's formation.
But the way in which their study was conducted meant it wasn't clear whether this hydrogen was an original 'intrinsic' part of the rock or whether it was contamination from Earth.
To learn more Dr Barrett and his co-authors used a technique called X-Ray Absorption Near Edge Structure spectroscopy.
This works by shining a very powerful X-ray beam onto the material and looking at each atom absorbs energy to work out what element it is and what kind of chemical it is part of.
When the researchers shone the X-ray on the edges of the chondrules, where water had been found before, they found that these areas were extremely rich in a chemical called hydrogen sulphide.
Since this rock is so similar to the composition of the Earth when it formed, this suggests that the planet may have already had enough hydrogen for liquid water to form.
Dr Bryson says: 'Our work suggests that water did not need to be delivered from asteroids.
'The material that created Earth likely contained enough hydrogen, in the form of hydrogen sulphide, to explain the entire water budget of Earth.'
Additionally, the location of the hydrogen-rich chemicals in the meteorite is a strong sign that their findings are accurate.
Using a powerful beam of X-rays the researchers found that some parts of the rock were exceptionally rich in hydrogen sulphide. This means that the early Earth might have had all the hydrogen it needed right from the start
Since this type of meteorite is such a good match for the building blocks of Earth, the researchers believe that there was no need for asteroids to deliver water to the planet since there was already enough hydrogen here
While the material around the spherical chondrules was rich in hydrogen sulphide, parts of the meteorite which had signs of contamination such as cracks or rust had none.
This tells the researchers that the hydrogen in the meteorite must have been part of its structure before it arrived on Earth.
Co-author Dr James Bryson, associate professor of mineralogy at the University of Oxford, told MailOnline: 'We are pretty confident that the meteorites we have measured are a good repression of Earth's building blocks.
This is because the meteorite contains the same ratio of stable isotopes, types of elements, as found near the interior of Earth.
This doesn't mean that none of Earth's water came from asteroid impacts, since we have good evidence that some water on the planet's surface was delivered in this way.
However, this shows that some of the water on the surface and most of the water in the interior, which is the majority on the planet, was there from the beginning.
Dr Bryson says: 'Our findings just show that there was enough hydrogen in Earth from its inception to form abundant water - we don't know when or how that happened, but we hope our research will inspire those questions to be examined.'
MailOnline has used AI to take scientists' best predictions and imagine what life might be like on K2-18b.
The most likely scenario is that K2-18b's oceans are filled with something like phytoplankton - microscopic organisms that feed on the energy from the nearby star.
However, where there are plankton there is also the possibility of more complex lifeforms evolving to feed on this abundant food supply.
That could mean K2-18b is teaming with strange lifeforms, from filter-feeding shrimp to alien flying fish.
Scientists say life on the planet K2-18b will likely be microscopic phytoplankton
(AI Impression)
Researchers found traces of chemicals produced by life in the atmosphere of K2-18b (artist's impression), a planet 124 light-years from Earth. This planet is most likely a 'Hycean' world covered by oceans
Plankton
K2-18b is an exoplanet located around 124 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Leo.
It is 2.6 times larger and 8.6 times as massive than Earth, and experts believe it is likely covered in an ocean – making it what they call a 'Hycean world'.
From observations, scientists know that K2-18b is orbiting a red dwarf star in an area known as the 'habitable zone' in which liquid water can exist.
As the planet passes in front of its star, scientists can record how different chemicals in the atmosphere absorb the light.
This revealed the chemical fingerprints of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), which are only made on Earth by living creatures.
Dr Arik Kershenbaum, a zoologist from the University of Cambridge says: 'It's a complex chemical that decays really quickly. So, if you see it there, then something must be making it.'
Although scientists can't be 100 per cent certain that K2-18b is a Hycean world, if it is, then the oceans would be the most likely place for life to develop.
On Earth, DMS and DMDS are only produced by living organisms - mostly microbial life such as marine phytoplankton (like the ones pictured)
K2-18b is thought to be a 'Hycean' world (depicted) - a class of exoplanet possessing key ingredients for alien species because of their hydrogen-rich atmospheres and oceans of water. Life most likely exists near the surface of the water, feeding on the energy from the star
However, Dr Arik Kershenbaum, a zoologist from the University of Cambridge and author of The Zoologists Guide to the Galaxy, says that life on K2-18b would be quite different to life on Earth today.
'Even if there is an ocean on this planet it's going to look more like what Earth looked like three or four billion years ago when life first evolved,' he said.
'So, one thing we can say pretty confidently is that the vast majority of planets that have any sort of life on them are going to have simple life on them.'
That means the most likely form of life will be microscopic organisms such as phytoplankton.
On Earth, these creatures sit near the surface of the water and convert sunlight into energy by photosynthesis and, importantly, also create DMS and DMDS.
So, if these chemicals do really have a biological source, phytoplankton in K2-18b's oceans are the most likely contender.
Filter feeders
However, just because life is simple on K2-18b, this doesn't mean that it will all be small.
More complex life may have evolved to feed on the microorganisms in the water, these could resemble Earth creatures called choanoflagellates which suck water through their funnel-like bodies (AI impression)
Dr Kershenbaum says: 'By simple I just mean simple interactions and a very simple ecosystem.
'So, you might have organisms that capture light from the star like plants do on our planet and then, as they die and sink down in the water there might be some organisms that eat the dead creatures.
'That's probably what life was like on Earth around two billion years ago.'
Dr Kershenbaum says that the restrictions of physics and the limits on how creatures can move themselves mean that life on K2-18b would share some similarities with life on Earth.
So, if more complex life has evolved it could resemble some of the early filter feeders in Earth's history.
On Earth, one of the very first things to start eating microorganisms was a type of single-celled organism called choanoflagellates, the earliest living ancestor of all animals on Earth.
These simple creatures looked like tiny badminton shuttlecocks which used microscopic hairs to suck bacteria through a funnel and consume them.
Scientists believe that something very much like this was probably the closest relative of all animal life on Earth so simple creatures on K2-18b might look similar.
Animals on K2-18b could look like some of Earth's first filter-feeding organisms. These were large, shrimp-like creatures which gathered particles in the water using their feather-like appendages (AI impression)
Although complex animals only evolved more recently in Earth's evolutionary history, the fossil record might offer some hints to what alien life could look like.
Scientists believe the first filter-feeding animal in Earth's history was a large shrimp-like creature called Tamisiocaris borealis which lived 540 million years ago.
This animal used long, feather-like structures around its head to gather tiny particles from the water.
Although it isn't likely, if there is more complex life on K2-18b it might have evolved in a similar way.
This makes it less likely that K2-18b will have forms of life with complex relationships like predation and evasion behaviours.
However, if it does happen to have a truly complex life, scientists have some ideas of what it could look like.
Scientists have said that flying fish or even birds might develop on water worlds to avoid predators (AI impression)
Since the light from the red dwarf star is so dim, any creatures in K2-18bs oceans would have evolved very large eyes (AI impression)
Since K2-18b orbits a red dwarf star, the light reaching the planet will be dim which places some constraints on how life could develop.
Astronomer Michael Garrett, a professor at Manchester University, previously told MailOnline: 'I think the way complex life might appear will depend a lot on the environment within which it evolves.
'If your star is a red giant, you might find life with eyes that are much more sensitive and larger than ours.'
Professor Garrett also said that if the world had a low-density atmosphere, it may have 'life forms with wings of enormous scale'.
Likewise, in 2013, NASA researchers discovered two water worlds, called Kepler-62e and Kpler-62f, which were promising candidates in the search for life.
Speaking to Space.com at the time, lead researcher Bill Borucki, of NASA's Ames Research Center, said that these planets could be home to fish or even birds.
Mr Borucki said: 'At least in our ocean, we have flying fish. They 'fly' to get away from predators. So we might find that they have evolved — birds — on this ocean planet.'
Since K2-18b is a water world just like Kepler-62e and 62f, its oceans could also be home to strange alien flying fish or even sea birds.
The Drake Equation is a seven-variable way of finding the chance of active civilizations existing beyond Earth.
It takes into account factors like the rate of star formation, the amount of stars that could form planetary systems, the number potentially habitable planets in those systems.
The equation includes recent data from Nasa's Kepler satellite on the number of exoplanets that could harbor life.
Researchers also adapted the equation from being about the number of civilizations that exist now, to being about the probability of civilization being the only one that has ever existed.
Researchers found the odds of an advanced civilization developing need to be less than one in 10 billion trillion for humans to be the only intelligent life in the universe.
Unless the odds of advanced life evolving on a habitable planet are astonishingly low, then humankind is not the only advanced civilization to have lived.
But Kepler data places those odds much higher, which means technologically advanced aliens are likely to have existed at some point.
Shocking DNA findings from two mummies discovered in Northern Africa may rewrite the family tree of human history.
Scientists from the Max Planck Institute in Germany found that these ancient corpses unearthed in present-day Libya carried the DNA of a previously unknown group of humans from 7,000 years ago.
This lost group in the Sahara Desert had a distinct genetic makeup that was much different than scientists expected to find out among ancient humans traveling in and out of Africa.
Between 5,000 and 14,500 years ago, this desert region was a lush and fertile area known as the Green Sahara.
That has led scientists to believe that ancient humans in this part of the world would have interacted more with other human tribes arriving from sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East.
Instead, this lost group appears to have completely isolated themselves from other human populations migrating to the Green Sahara.
In fact, the mummy DNA had significantly less Neanderthal DNA than ancient humans living outside of Africa in that era, challenging what researchers assumed about the ancient world and how much these cultures intermingled.
First author Nada Salem from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology said: 'Our research challenges previous assumptions about North African population history and highlights the existence of a deeply rooted and long-isolated genetic lineage.'
Scientists have discovered 2 mummies in present-day Libya which appear to be from a long lost lineage of early humans
The skeletons were identified as being from two women, buried in the Takarkori rock shelter in southwestern Libya.
Instead of sharing a similar genetic makeup with modern populations from Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, these women had close genetic ties to a group of scavengers from 15,000 years ago.
The German researchers said these foragers lived in caves in present-day Morocco during the last Ice Age.
Both the group from the Ice Age and the newly discovered mummies from the Green Sahara have a DNA makeup that is completely different from sub-Saharan Africans.
This appears to prove that the two populations on the continent stayed relatively separate, even though this fertile region provided ample opportunity for the communities to meet and eventually interbreed.
In comparison to ancient humans found outside of Africa from 7,000 years ago, the Takarkori mummies have only a small trace of Neandertal DNA - far less than the one to two percent in Middle Eastern farmers of that time period.
Researchers noted that this unique lineage of humans no longer exists in its original form in the modern world.
The DNA of the Takarkori mummies now only makes up a part of the greater genetic puzzle in humans today.
However, the team explained that 'this ancestry is still a central genetic component of present-day North African people, highlighting their unique heritage.'
Scientists from Germany say the 2 female skeletons trace their ancestry back to a population of scavengers from the Ice Age 15,000 years ago
Roughly 7,000 years ago, the Sahara Desert was actually a fertile land that scientists now refer to as the Green Sahara. It was a region that would have been ideal for farming and herding livestock
As for how this changes the story of early human history, the study published in the journal Nature contended that the mummies prove that early agricultural practices spread by one group teaching others how to farm and herd livestock.
This practice, known as cultural diffusion, means that the lost group of humans learned new ideas and shared their own with outsiders, but rarely intermarried or lived together.
Based on this theory, people in the Sahara started herding livestock around 7,000 to 8,000 years ago. Those ideas likely came from ancient travelers making their way from the Middle East.
The Green Sahara's grassy plains and water sources were perfect for grazing animals, so it made sense for people to adopt this lifestyle.
Based on the genetic results of the Takarkori mummies, it's clear that the Middle Eastern farmers did not permanently migrate to this area, according to the study.
This 'migration theory' would have meant that Middle Eastern herders moved into the Green Sahara with their animals, bringing their genes along, and eventually changing the genome of the local population.
However, none of this appears to have taken place, and herding actually spread throughout Northern Africa because it was a practical skill, not part of a cultural takeover.
Now, people are being left concerned by a mysterious triangular tower stationed at Area 51 in the Nevada desert.
The imposing sci-fi worthy structure, about 80 miles northwest of Las Vegas, is circulating online after being spotted on Google Maps.
On social media, people have compared it to a skyscraper, an exhaust vent and even a Dyson air purifier.
But its location at Area 51 is leading conspiracy theorists to speculate that it is somehow involved in alien contact.
Area 51, the highly classified United States Air Force base and active military installation, is frequently linked with UFO theories and folklore.
After a shot of the tower was posted to Reddit, one user said 'it's where the aliens test their various white powders'.
Someone else posted: 'Obviously alien technology. It pops out when the Earth is done.'
Visible on Google Maps, the unusual structure is stationed in a remote spot in Nevada, about 80 miles (130km) northwest of Las Vegas
'It was built to specifically provoke theoretical conversation,' another added.
Facebook users also joked about the identity of the tower, with one person calling it 'a new version of Jenga', the popular British board game.
Someone else remarked: 'That's my Samsung TV remote', while another said: 'That is the leaning tower of pizza'.
One simply offered the description: 'Toblerone trade center.'
Yet another said: 'The aliens are like we can help you out but we can't work in those square things you humans work in we need our tall triangle shaped building.'
Others compared it to the tall revolving home air conditioners from the likes of Dyson, with one saying it is being used as 'the cure to global warming'.
As noticed by other commentators, it has a similar aura to the mysterious monolith in Stanley Kubrick's sci-fi film '2001: A Space Odyssey'.
On Google Maps, the unusual structure can be located simply by entering the coordinates in the search bar – '37.24624° N, 115.82334° W'.
As users can see, it's stationed in the remote spot in Nevada, about 80 miles (130km) northwest of Las Vegas, the state's largest city.
The tower is located at Area 51 - leaving conspiracy theorists to speculate that it is somehow involved in alien contact
It has a similar vibe to the black monolith in Stanley Kubrick's 1968 epic, '2001: A Space Odyssey' (pictured). The mysterious object arrives at Earth, causing confusion for startled primates
What is the Area 51 tower?
Google Maps were left perplexed when coming across the Area 51 triangular tower.
Variously described as 150 feet and 190 feet in height, its construction dates back two decades.
The tower is used for radar cross-section (RCS) testing, where aircraft or mock-ups are mounted to measure how detectable they are to radar.
It's adjacent to a vast network of buildings, cars and runways that form the highly classified region, officially called Homey Airport or Groom Lake.
The tower has what looks like a long, looping dirt pile going around it in the shape of a noose and an imposing shadow from the Nevada sunshine – leading one Facebooker to call it a 'very accurate sundial'.
Curiously, Google Maps does not name the structure, and if users click on it they're only presented with a pop-up of its coordinates.
However, there appears to be a rational explanation for the tower – and it's not to do with aliens, global warming or the monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
The tower is used for radar cross-section (RCS) testing, where aircraft or mock-ups are mounted to measure how detectable they are to radar.
One Facebook user explained: 'Its shadow and elevated position match the known appearance of this type of pylon structure used for mounting full-scale aircraft models or prototypes.'
Variously described as 150 feet and 190 feet in height, it was reportedly constructed 20 years ago but only acknowledged by the US government in 2013.
Largely due to US government secrecy surrounding its military efforts, the site will likely long continue to inspire such farfetched theories.
The tower is located at Area 51 - leaving conspiracy theorists to speculate that it is somehow involved in alien contact (file photo)
Google Map users spotted the large, white disc poking out from the ground at an elevation of 7,400 feet, with the coordinates 34°24'21.6"N 107°05'44.5"W.
The structure was later identified as a rainwater catchment that has since been removed and replaced by a different structure.'
Meanwhile, a mysterious 'doorway' spotted in Antarctica, just southeast of the Japanese-run Showa Station, sparked a similar wave of theories across the internet, with one describing it as 'bigfoot's vacation home'.
Pentagon releases footage of unexplained UFOs spotted around the world - from a spherical object in the Middle East to a milk bottle-like item over the US
The Pentagon has long been secretive regarding what it knows about UFOs.
The clips, some just a few seconds in length, show aerial phenomena that it cannot explain, in all sorts of shapes and sizes.
They include a spherical object over buildings in the Middle East, a milk bottle-like item over the US and the famous Tic Tac captured by the US Navy in 2004.
The videos have been published on the new website of the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) , a dedicated UFO department formed in July 2022 under the Department of Defense (the 'Pentagon').
One of nature's mightiest beasts has never before been documented in its natural environment – until now.
Scientists have captured the first ever footage of a live colossal squid – the largest invertebrate on the planet.
The stunning 4K video film, captured in the deep sea by California's Schmidt Ocean Institute, shows the rare creature's transparent body and eight pink tentacles.
Colossal squid can grow up to 23 feet (7 metres) and weigh as much as 500kg, making them the heaviest invertebrate on the planet.
But this specimen, which looks like a delicate glass sculpture, is just a 'teenager' – measuring 11 inches (30cm).
Dying colossal squid adults have previously been filmed by fishermen, but the species has never been seen alive at depth before.
Expedition chief scientist, Dr Michelle Taylor at the University of Essex, called the footage 'stunning' and 'beautiful'.
'The squid is a teenager and none have ever been filmed alive before in their natural habitat, juvenile or adult,' she told MailOnline.
This is the first confirmed live observation of the colossal squid, Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni, in its natural habitat
The species can reach 23 feet (7 metres) in length, but this specimen is a baby - just 11 inches (30cm)
'Adults likely shy away from remotely operated vehicles; we probably caught this teenager unawares and its response was to sit very still and hope we weren’t a predator.'
It comes 100 years after the first colossal squid specimens were found and described in 1925 – based on specimens from the stomach of a hunted sperm whale.
This incredible new sighting occurred on March 9 this year during an expedition near the South Sandwich Islands in the South Atlantic Ocean.
Schmidt Ocean Institute's remotely operated vehicle (ROV) SuBastian was at a depth of 1,968 feet (600 metres) as it was livestreaming the footage.
However, those watching, including Dr Taylor, did not know the significance of what they were seeing on the screen.
'At the time, not being a squid expert and regrettably having none on board the ship, we did not realise that we had seen a colossal squid,' Dr Taylor told MailOnline.
'We knew it was a beautiful glass squid so paused on the descent to watch it; why would you not, it’s stunning.'
Only later when a team of scientists including Dr Bolstad and Dr Aaron Evans, an independent squid expert, reviewed the footage could its identity be verified.
The colossal squid was first described in 1925 based on specimens from the stomach of a commercially hunted sperm whale. A century later, an international voyage captured the first confirmed video of this species in its natural habitat
The remotely operated vehicle (ROV) SuBastian, which captured the historic footage, is recovered onto Research Vessel Falkor (too)
Colossal squid can grow up to 23 feet (7 metres) and weigh as much as 500kg, making them the heaviest invertebrate on the planet
Distinguishing characteristics of colossal squid are hooks on the ends of the two long tentacles and in the middle of each of the eight shorter arms.
When they saw the arm hooks, Dr Evans 'started hyperventilating', he told a press briefing announcing the footage on Tuesday.
Fortunately no attempts to catch the creature and bring it to shore were made, unlike other colossal squid specimens.
Back in 2007, the largest recorded colossal squid, a female, was captured by a New Zealand fishing boat in the Ross Sea off Antarctica.
The squid was dying when it was captured and photographed before its corpse was taken back to New Zealand for scientific study.
Dr Taylor said seeing a live specimen in its natural habitat is so important because we get to observe finally observe its biology and ecology.
'For example, see how it holds itself in the water column, how is moves, its behaviours – none of this is possible with dead specimens,' she said.
As well as being the world's largest invertebrate, the colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni) is the world's largest squid species and a member of the glass squid family (scientifically known as 'Cranchiidae').
A preserved colossal squid on display at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa in Wellington
Back in January, another expedition filmed the first confirmed footage of the glacial glass squid (Galiteuthis glacialis) in the Southern Ocean near Antarctica
It is not to be confused with the giant squid (Architeuthis dux), which is similarly large and elusive but has been seen in its deep sea habitat before.
Little is known about the colossal squid’s life cycle, but eventually, they lose the transparent appearance of the juveniles, as seen in this new clip.
It comes shortly after the first confirmed footage of the glacial glass squid (Galiteuthis glacialis) in the Southern Ocean near Antarctica, taken in January.
G. glacialis is another glass squid species that has never been seen alive in its natural environment before – although adults only reach a maximum mantle length of 20 inches (50 cm).
'The first sighting of two different squids on back-to-back expeditions is remarkable and shows how little we have seen of the magnificent inhabitants of the Southern Ocean,' said Dr Jyotika Virmani, Schmidt Ocean Institute’s executive director.
'Fortunately, we caught enough high-resolution imagery of these creatures to allow the global experts, who were not on the vessel, to identify both species.'
The world's largest invertebrates
Invertebrates are animals that neither develop nor retain a vertebral column (a spine or backbone).
The largest living invertebrates (and most likely of all time) are two species of mega-squid.
Based on length, the record holder is the giant squid (Architeuthis dux) which can grow to at least (42 ft 8 in (13 metres).
However, most of this length is in its tentacles with the main body (mantle) reaching up to 7 ft 5 in (2.25 metres).
The heaviest entire specimen of giant squid on record was approximately 220 kg (485 lb).
Colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni), on the other hand, take the record based on weight.
They have a similar-sized mantle (up to 8 ft 2 in/2.5 metres) but shorter tentacles.
The biggest intact colossal squid to date measured 17 ft 9 in (5.4 metres).
Colossal squid are much heftier, weighing up to 495 kg (1,091 lb).
A Navy sailor, whose family has ties to Area 51, has revealed eerie details about when he encountered four mysterious UFOs rising from the Pacific Ocean.
Wiggins had watched the mysterious four objects emerging from the ocean and taking off in a 'synchronized' flight off the coast of southern California.
Speaking with 8newsnow, the radar specialist contended that he still remains dubious and wonders if the truth about it will ever be revealed about what he saw.
He said: 'To my surprise, which is something I've never witnessed, was a light I noticed on the horizon, it looked as if it were surfacing out of the water and going up.'
Not believing what he was seeing, he took a look at the shapes through a thermal sensor, which showed not just one but two tic-tac shaped objects in the sky.
'We only saw the one, and then we see the second one. I was only when we zoom out that we realize there's two more out here, a total of four', he added.
Wiggins - who is speaking out to help investigators piece together the mystery - said that while he was watching the tic tacs in awe, they suddenly took off 'to the north east, all at the same time.'
Most shocking to Wiggins was the speed of the lights in the sky. He said: 'If I had to talk speed, it was two steps behind instantaneous.'
Senior Chief Operations Specialist Alexandro Wiggins, a Navy veteran of 23 years, was onboard the USS Jackson during the incident on February 15, 2023
The objects were recorded by stunned sailors who said they spotted four UFOs in total
While maintaining skepticism about what he saw from the ship in 2023, Wiggins hoped that 'one day I’ll know what that was, and I’ll be like 80 or 90 years old.
'And it’ll be normalized like the stealth fighter or Area 51. At some point, it’ll be public, but then I’ll be old.'
Wiggins, a Las Vegas native, also said that his father had worked at Area 51, the highly classified Air Force base that is frequently linked with UFO theories and folklore.
The shape of the UFOs appeared strikingly similar to a 2004 sighting of a 'tic tac shaped'UFO in the same waters, which was previously investigated by a top secret government program.
The never-before-seen video was obtained by journalist George Knapp and Jeremy Corbell, co-hosts of the Weaponized Podcast, who revealed it to the public earlier this month.
Knapp and co-host Jeremy Corbell spoke to personnel onboard who said they watched as four Tic Tac-shaped UFOs that emerged from the ocean in a military-controlled area known as Warning Area 291.
Corbell noted that this is the same area of the Pacific where other Navy sailors have reported seeing strange, unidentified craft over the years - including the now-infamous 2004 Tic Tac sighting by the USS Nimitz.
A combat information center (CIC) operator on board the Jackson who witnessed the incident spoke with the podcast, saying that seeing a UFO over the Pacific isn't really shocking for Navy personnel, but seeing a whole formation take off out of the water was jarring.

A Satellite image of Area 51, Southern Nevada, is seen here. The base has frequently been linked with UFO theories and folklore
'All in synchronous, jetting into the abyss. All four, all timed together and all left. And we were like holy s**t," the anonymous CIC operator told the Weaponized podcast.
'The second they left, maybe three, four seconds pass, I run to my station and I look at my radar, they're all off radar. That's it, they all zoomed off," the sailor continued.
'But it's clear that they're in communication with one another and synchronized like three, two, one countdown. Let's all go.
'I think unless there's some level of like one entity controlling all four and then they all leave at the same time.'
Shockingly, none of the craft seen in the Safire images was producing any kind of heat trail as they were moving through the air - meaning they were using a totally unknown form of propulsion.
Corbell added that even if the UFOs were just hovering over the Pacific, the Safire camera should have been able to see some kind of heat from an engine - but there was nothing.
Former defense department analyst Marik Von Rennenkampff analyzed flight data from the time and location of the sighting and concluded there were no US aircraft in the area.
'I don't think it's ours. I suspect there are better places for us to showcase that kind of equipment to unwitting sailors. That just doesn't make sense,' Von Rennenkampff said.
At least four pilots encountered the mysterious object as it flew at speed over the Pacific near Mexico on November 14, 2004.
Top Gun fighter pilot David Fravor was flying a training exercise off the coast of San Diego when he was re-routed to investigate a strange object spotted on radar by warships protecting his aircraft carrier, the Nimitz.
He found a roughly 40ft white object with no windows or wings, shaped like a Tic-Tac, flitting about above the sea that was roiling below it, disturbed by something large submerged beneath the surface.
Commander Fravor told Congress in 2023 that as he circled the object, it turned to mirror his movements, then shot off past him at thousands of miles per hour, somehow stopping a second later at a secret pre-designated rendezvous point 60 miles away, that only he and a handful of Navy staff on his ship were given ahead of their training exercise.
Astronomers Detect Signs of Life On Planet Just 120-Light-Years Distant
The search for life on alien worlds has produced by far its most exciting discovery, in the form of a planet just 124 light years from earth that shows all the signs of hosting life. Translating galactic terms into an earth-centered perspective, this planet is literally right across the street from us, and the data that has been collected from there suggests it is likely “teeming with life,” at least some of which could be highly intelligent. It seems that much of the surface of this distant planet is covered with ocean, as is earth, which suggests the possibility of parallel stories of evolution.
For now, this unique exoplanet has been given the decidedly unromantic name of K2-18b—which is probably not what its inhabitants call it (assuming they exist, of course).
Using data collected by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), the team of astronomers responsible for this discovery, led by researchers from the University of Cambridge, have identified massive quantities of chemicals only produced by living organisms on Earth in the atmosphere of K2 – 18b. Specifically, they have identified the chemical fingerprints of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), molecules that are primarily produced by microbial life like marine phytoplankton.
The data obtained from K2 – 18b is the 'strongest hint yet' of biological activity outside our solar system, with experts hailing this discovery as a 'huge, transformational moment'. And the fact that this planet is just 124 light years away, in the Zodiac constellation of Leo, only adds to the thrill of this unprecedented discovery.
The Marvels of Our Hycean Neigbor Are Revealed
K2-18b is what scientists call a “Hycean world,” meaning it likely harbors a vast ocean and has a hydrogen-rich atmosphere. It's about 2.6 times larger than Earth and has 8.6 times our planet’s mass. Despite being much closer to its host star—resulting in a year that lasts just 33 Earth days—the planet maintains a temperature range that could allow for liquid water to exist on its surface.
Artist’s conception of K2-18b, its star, and another smaller planet from its solar system, rendered with the assistance of data obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope.
Previous studies had already picked up the presence of methane and carbon dioxide in the planet’s atmosphere, a groundbreaking find at the time. But now, with the discovery of DMS and DMDS, scientists are even more confident that something extraordinary may be unfolding on K2-18b.
Unlike on Earth, where DMS and DMDS levels are typically less than one part per billion, the concentrations on K2-18b are estimated to exceed 10 parts per million—thousands of times higher. This suggests a planet that is heavily populated by at least microbial lifeforms, and almost assuredly lifeforms that are far more advanced than that (if one assumes that evolution would follow similar paths on habitable planets like earth and K2-18b).
Professor Nikku Madhusudhan, who led the research at Cambridge’s Institute of Astronomy, explained the significance of these findings.
“Earlier theoretical work had predicted that high levels of sulfur-based gases like DMS and DMDS are possible on Hycean worlds,” he told Space.com. “And now we’ve observed it, in line with what was predicted. Given everything we know about this planet, a Hycean world with an ocean that is teeming with life is the scenario that best fits the data we have.”
Although the results are promising, Professor Madhusudhan emphasized caution. There’s still a possibility that unknown chemical processes not related to life might be responsible for the signals. More data is needed before scientists can declare the presence of alien life with 100-percent certainty.
The team is currently planning additional experiments to determine if non-biological mechanisms could generate these compounds in the quantities observed. JWST will also continue to collect more data to rule out statistical anomalies (although they believe this is highly unlikely).
“This could be the tipping point,” Madhusudhan noted. “Decades from now, we may look back at this point in time and recognize it was when the living universe came within reach.”

A Miracle Find Using the Most Advanced Tools of Scientific Detection
To analyze the chemical composition of a far-off planet’s atmosphere, astronomers study the light emitted from the planet’s star during a transit, or when the planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint. During this alignment, a portion of starlight filters through the planet’s atmosphere, imprinting unique spectral signatures of its gases, which can then be analyzed back on Earth.
Last year, JWST first picked up subtle anomalies in the atmosphere of K2-18b, in addition to the already-confirmed presence of methane and carbon dioxide. The team decided to take a closer look using different instruments on the telescope.
Initially, they used JWST’s NIRISS (Near-Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph) and NIRSpec (Near-Infrared Spectrograph), both of which analyze wavelengths between 0.8 and 5 microns. These early hints of DMS led to further investigation using JWST’s MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument), which covers a different range—6 to 12 microns. The separate instrument provided independent confirmation of the earlier findings.
“This is an independent line of evidence,” said Madhusudhan. “We used a different instrument and a different wavelength range of light. The signal came through strong and clear.”
Måns Holmberg, a co-author from the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, said, “It was an incredible realization seeing the results emerge and remain consistent throughout the extensive independent analyses and robustness tests.”
Though DMS and DMDS are similar and sometimes hard to distinguish due to overlapping spectral features, both are considered potential biosignatures. Additional observations will help scientists more clearly identify which compound is present, and in what quantities.
Statistically, the current observations have reached the "three-sigma" level, meaning there's just a 0.3% chance the data is a fluke. However, to meet the gold standard of scientific discovery—"five-sigma" significance—the probability must fall below 0.00006%. The researchers believe that 16 to 24 more hours of observing time with JWST could get them to this threshold.
Illustration of the organic molecules found on Mars by NASA’s rover Curiosity, which is also pictured (on the Martian surface).
Interestingly, this announcement comes on the heels of another major scientific revelation related to the ongoing quest to find signs off-planet signs of lie. Just last month, researchers reported finding massive organic molecules on Mars—carbon chains with up to 12 atoms—in rock samples dating back billions of years. These molecules may have originated from fatty acids, which on Earth are made by living organisms. What exactly this means with respect to Mars’ past is uncertain, but the discovery is definitely consistent that the planet hosted life of some kind at some point in the distant past.
All in all, these are exciting times for scientists and other creative and imaginative people searching for proof that we are not alone in the universe.

A New Concept for an Astrobiology Mission to Enceladus
By Matthew Williams
This mosaic of Saturn's moon Enceladus was created with images captured by NASA's Cassini spacecraft on Oct. 9, 2008, after the spacecraft came within about 16 miles (25 kilometers) of the surface of Enceladus. Credit: NASA/JPL/Space Science Institute
This year's Lunar Planetary Science Conference(2025 LPSC) saw some truly astounding presentations and proposals. These covered a wide range of science and exploration missions that address the priorities of NASA, other space agencies, and affiliated institutes. A major area of interest was future astrobiology missions that will search for evidence of biological processes (biosignatures) on extraterrestrial bodies. This included Mars, where most of our astrobiology efforts are focused, and locations in the outer Solar System.
Consider Enceladus, Saturn's icy moon known for the plume activity in its southern polar region. Based on planetary modeling, scientists theorize that these plumes are caused by tidal flexing in the moon's interior. This causes Enceladus' interior ocean to breach the surface (cryovolcanism) and hurl material into space. To confirm the presence of organics and (potentially) life, a team from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) proposes an Enceladus Orbitlander to conduct in-situ measurements of Enceladus' plumes.
The study was led by Alfred Nash, a JPL researcher, the winner of the JPL Principal Designation Award (2015) for Project Systems Engineering & Formulation, and the Lead Engineer of Team X, the JPL Advanced Design Team responsible for rapidly generating innovative space mission concepts. He was joined by his Team X JPL colleagues at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
According to their study, their mission proposal is consistent with the Planetary Science and Astrobiology Decadal Survey 2023-2032 ("Origins, Worlds, and Life") released in 2022. In this survey, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) committee established a Flagship mission to Enceladus (consisting of an orbiter and lander element) as the second-highest priority for missions developed before 2032:
"Study of plume material allows direct study of the ocean’s habitability, addressing a fundamental question: Is there life beyond Earth and if not, why not? Orbilander will analyze fresh plume material from orbit and during a 2-year landed mission. Its main science objectives are (1) to search for evidence of life; and (2) to obtain geochemical and geophysical context for life detection experiments."
Ever since the Cassini-Huygens mission studied Saturn and its largest moons (2004-2017), scientists have been eager to get a better look at Enceladus. Like Jupiter's moon, Europa, and Saturn's largest moon, Titan, Enceladus is considered one of the most promising places to look for extraterrestrial life in the Solar System. Because of the distance between Earth and Saturn, mission concepts typically call for Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators (RTGs) as a power source.
These nuclear batteries powered astrobiology missions like the Curiosity and Perseverance rovers and the Galileo and New Horizons spacecraft. At least three RTGs powered the Cassini orbiter, which was deemed necessary because solar panels are ineffective this far from the Sun. However, as Nash and his team explain, NASA has indicated that the inventory of RTGs is limited due to their cost and complexity, particularly where their plutonium-238 fuel is concerned.
Mission Architecture
The mission architecture that resulted consisted of a two-stage spacecraft comprised of a Lander and a Saturn Orbit Insertion (SOI) stage. This mission would launch in November 2038 using an expendable version of the Falcon Heavy rocket and a Star 48 solid rocket motor. This mission would spend the next 7.5 years travelling to Saturn, followed by a one-year Saturn approach and orbital transfer to Enceladus. This would be followed by half a year of fast flybys of Enceladus.
They estimate that the Orbitlander could sample plume material twelve times during this phase while flying 50 km (31 mi) from the surface at velocities of 5-9 km/s (3-5.5 mi/s). This would be followed by a 2.6-year Saturn Tour and Enceladus Orbit Insertion (EOI) phase, where the spacecraft would perform gravity assists to lower its altitude and speed to 30 km (18.5 mi) and 500-900 m/s (0.3-0.5 mi/s). The mission will spend another 3.5 months and sample plume material eight more times.
The mission will then drop its altitude to 50 km (31 mi) and spend a year scouting for a landing site. The DDL phase will take place, followed by two years of surface operations, during which the lander will collect and analyze samples from the moon's icy crust, including water and plume material that has refrozen on the surface. The team also presents an alternative New Frontiers (NF) Program mission, which is also consistent with recommendations put forth in the 2023 Decadal Survey:
"Should budgetary constraints not permit initiation of Orbilander, the committee includes the Enceladus Multiple Flyby (EMF) mission theme in NF. EMF provides an alternative pathway for progress this decade on the crucial question of ocean world habitability, albeit with greatly reduced sample volume, higher velocity of sample acquisition and associated degradation, and a smaller instrument component to support life-detection."
Design
The team recommends a lower Size, Weight, Power, and Cost (SWaP-C) concept for their proposed Enceladus Orbitlander. Team X relied on standard tools and validated Institutional Cost Models (ICM) to evaluate their mission concept and incorporated technologies that could be developed within the next five years. These technologies were evaluated for their ability to minimize the spacecraft's dry mass and enable the mission to accomplish its science objectives using only one next-generation RTG power system.
They forgo reaction wheels for attitude control and opt for cold gas bipropellant thrusters instead. A High-Performance Space Computer (HPSC) would handle command and data systems. An Intelligent Landing System Lite was chosen for Deorbit, Descent, and Landing (DDL). The power subsystem comprises a Distributed Power Architecture (DPA) and a Peak Power Tracker (PPT), which reduce the overall cable mass and ensure the RTG consistently runs at 30 volts, increasing the power available from the RTG.
These elements were all selected because they reduce the spacecraft's total mass and power needs by half compared to instruments used today. The propulsion system leverages improvements made in Low-Temperature Cold Gas Systems to reduce the heater power requirements, while a series of composite overwrap tanks were chosen for their reduced mass. The Orbitlander will rely on a 10° half-angle X-band Medium Gain Antenna (MGA) and a Patch Array High-Gain Antenna (HGA) for communications.
Advanced Variable Radioisotope Heater Units (RHUs) will handle the spacecraft's thermal systems, reducing the number of RHUs needed to heat the spacecraft's thrusters and instruments. As the team concludes, these design choices result in a system with a launch mass 846 kg (1865 lbs) lighter than the Technical Risk and Cost Evaluation (TRACE) estimate from the Decadal Survey, and $900 million cheaper.
Conclusions
Overall, the team's "power reduction first" design offers a cost-effective, lower-mass, and simplified concept for an astrobiology mission to Enceladus in the coming decades. By incorporating advanced and evolving technologies, they claim that this could result in an architecture capable of delivering a greater payload to the surface, providing enhanced science opportunities:
"This approach not only reduces launch vehicle requirements and overall mission cost but also ensures technical feasibility within the timeline constraints of the decade. These results underscore the viability of a lower SWaP-C approach as a pathway for accelerated progress this decade on the crucial question of ocean world habitability, providing an important step forward in advancing the scientific priorities outlined in the Decadal Survey."
Navy Veteran Reveals Shocking UAP Sighting: Craft Emerged from Ocean
A U.S. Navy veteran has stepped forward to recount his extraordinary experience with an unidentified aerial phenomenon (UAP) encountered off the coast of Southern California. The incident, which was caught on thermal imaging by the crew of the USS Jackson in February 2023, has now drawn renewed attention thanks to this first-hand testimony.
Senior Chief Alexandre Wiggins, an Operations Specialist with over 23 years of service in the Navy, was aboard the USS Jackson when he witnessed something he describes as beyond anything he had seen before. Trained in air traffic control and radar operations, Wiggins was stationed in the ship’s Combat Information Center when he and his team noticed unusual activity on their radar and thermal systems.
What he saw next shocked him. Stepping outside to investigate, Wiggins observed a glowing light that appeared to be emerging from the ocean surface—a sight he described as unprecedented in all his years of naval service. Returning to his station, he used the ship’s thermal tracking system (not a traditional camera) to get a closer look. What it revealed were two distinct, Tic Tac-shaped objects—silent, smooth, and lacking any visible propulsion system.
Upon zooming out further, the crew identified a total of four such objects, all hovering near the ship. Then, in an instant, the objects accelerated and vanished northeastward at astonishing speed—so fast, Wiggins described the movement as nearly instantaneous.
The encounter occurred in the same waters where the original 2004 Tic Tac UAP incident took place, further deepening the mystery surrounding these types of sightings. According to defense analysts, no commercial or military aircraft were in the area at the time that could account for what the USS Jackson crew observed.
Wiggins, who also served on the USS Omaha during a separate 2019 incident involving multiple unidentified objects, emphasized that he’s not a whistleblower, but simply a witness who feels compelled to share his experience to help investigators understand what was encountered.
Although the ship did not file a formal incident report—citing the lack of hostile intent from the objects—the event has raised new questions about the nature of these phenomena, particularly those that appear to transition between sea and air with ease.
As more service members come forward with similar stories, calls continue to grow for greater transparency and investigation into UAPs, especially those observed by military personnel during official operations.
That's the most likely explanation for a new discovery made by scientists, who say they have detected the most promising signs yet of life outside our solar system.
Using data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), the astronomers, led by the University of Cambridge, have identified huge quantities of chemicals only made by living organisms on Earth.
They have picked up the chemical fingerprints of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) – molecules that are primarily produced by microbial life such as marine phytoplankton.
They have been detected in the atmosphere of exoplanet K2-18b, which is located around 124 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Leo.
It is the 'strongest hint yet' of biological activity outside our solar system, with experts hailing the 'huge, transformational moment'.
The planet is orbiting a red dwarf star in what is known as the 'habitable zone' – considered the most promising location to find life-supporting planets.
K2-18b is 2.6 times larger and 8.6 times as massive than Earth, and experts believe it is likely covered in an ocean – making it what they call a 'Hycean world'.
An illustration of a Hycean world, which experts believe K2-18b could be, orbiting its red dwarf star
On Earth, DMS and DMDS are only produced by living organisms - mostly microbial life such as marine phytoplankton (like the ones pictured)
The planet's temperature is similar to Earth's but it is orbiting so close to its star that a year there lasts just 33 days.
Earlier observations identified methane and carbon dioxide in its atmosphere – the first time that carbon-based molecules had been discovered on an exoplanet in the habitable zone.
Now, analysis of new data has unearthed the compounds which – as far as scientists are aware – are only produced by living organisms.
The concentrations of DMS and DMDS in K2-18b's atmosphere are very different than on Earth, where they are generally below one part per billion by volume.
On K2-18b, they are estimated to be thousands of times stronger - over 10 parts per million.
Professor Nikku Madhusudhan, from Cambridge's Institute of Astronomy, led the research.
'Earlier theoretical work had predicted that high levels of sulfur-based gases like DMS and DMDS are possible on Hycean worlds,' he said.
'And now we've observed it, in line with what was predicted.

Artist's impression of K2-18b with its potentially vast oceans which could be 'teeming with life'
'Given everything we know about this planet, a Hycean world with an ocean that is teeming with life is the scenario that best fits the data we have.'
He said that while the results are exciting, it's vital to obtain more data before claiming that life has been found on another world.
And while he is cautiously optimistic, there could be previously unknown chemical processes at work on K2-18b that may account for the findings.
Further observations from the JWST are needed to help confirm their results are not due to chance.
His team are also hoping to conduct further experiments to determine whether DMS and DMDS can be produced non-biologically at the level currently detected.
'Decades from now, we may look back at this point in time and recognise it was when the living universe came within reach,' Professor Madhusudhan said.
'This could be the tipping point, where suddenly the fundamental question of whether we're alone in the universe is one we're capable of answering.'
To determine the chemical composition of the atmospheres of faraway planets, astronomers analyse the light from its parent star as the planet transits, or passes in front of the star.
Further observations by the James Webb Space Telescope (pictured) could confirm the presence of DMS in the planet's atmosphere
Planet K2-18b: Key facts
Discovered: 2015
Star:Red Dwarf star K2-18
Constellation:Leo
Mass: 8.6 times that of Earth
Distance away from us: 124 light years
Orbital duration: 33 days
As K2-18b transits, JWST can detect a drop in stellar brightness, and a tiny fraction of starlight passes through the planet's atmosphere before reaching Earth.
The absorption of some of the starlight in the planet's atmosphere leaves imprints in the stellar spectrum that astronomers can piece together to determine the constituent gases of the exoplanet's atmosphere.
Last year, JWST detected weak hints of 'something else happening' on K2-18b alongside the discovery of methane and carbon dioxide.
'We didn't know for sure whether the signal we saw last time was due to DMS, but just the hint of it was exciting enough for us to have another look with JWST using a different instrument,' Professor Madhusudhan explained.
The earlier, tentative, inference of DMS was made using JWST's NIRISS (Near-Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph) and NIRSpec (Near-Infrared Spectrograph) instruments, which together cover the near-infrared (0.8-5 micron) range of wavelengths.
The new, independent observation used JWST's MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument) in the mid-infrared (6-12 micron) range.
'This is an independent line of evidence, using a different instrument than we did before and a different wavelength range of light, where there is no overlap with the previous observations,' Professor Madhusudhan said.
'The signal came through strong and clear.'
To determine the chemical composition of the atmospheres of faraway planets, astronomers analyse the light from its parent star as the planet or passes in front of it (pictured is an artist's impression of K2-18b)
Co-author Måns Holmberg, a researcher at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, USA, added: 'It was an incredible realisation seeing the results emerge and remain consistent throughout the extensive independent analyses and robustness tests.'
DMS and DMDS are molecules from the same chemical family, and both are predicted to be biosignatures.
Both molecules have overlapping spectral features in the observed wavelength range, although further observations will help differentiate between the two molecules.
'Our work is the starting point for all the investigations that are now needed to confirm and understand the implications of these exciting findings,' said co-author Savvas Constantinou, also from Cambridge's Institute of Astronomy.
The team say their observations have reached the 'three-sigma' level of statistical significance – meaning there is a 0.3 per cent probability that they occurred by chance.
To reach the accepted classification for scientific discovery, the observations would have to cross the five-sigma threshold, meaning there would be below a 0.00006 per cent probability they occurred by chance.
They said between 16 and 24 hours of follow-up observation time with JWST may help them reach the all-important five-sigma significance.
The discovery was published in the journal The Astrophysical Journal Letters.
Last month, scientists announced that organic molecules of 'unprecedented size' had been discovered on Mars, adding further evidence that life may once have existed on the Red Planet.
Experts found long carbon chains, containing up to 12 consecutive atoms, in samples of Martian rock which date back billions of years.
These organic molecules – the longest identified so far – could originate from fatty acids, which are the building blocks of fats and oils and are created on Earth through biological activity.
And scientists said the discovery is of 'high interest' in the search for potential signs of life.
British astronomer Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell was the first person to discover a pulsar in 1967 when she spotted a radio pulsar.
Since then other types of pulsars that emit X-rays and gamma rays have also been spotted.
Pulsars are essentially rotating, highly magnetised neutron stars but when they were first discovered it was believed they could have come from aliens.
'Wow!' radio signal
In 1977, an astronomer looking for alien life in the night sky above Ohio spotted a radio signal so powerful that he excitedly wrote 'Wow!' next to his data.
In 1977, an astronomer looking for alien life in the night sky above Ohio spotted a radio signal so powerful that he excitedly wrote 'Wow!' next to his data
The 72-second blast, spotted by Dr Jerry Ehman through a radio telescope, came from Sagittarius but matched no known celestial object.
Conspiracy theorists have since claimed that the 'Wow! signal', which was 30 times stronger than background radiation, was a message from intelligent extraterrestrials.
Fossilised Martian microbes
In 1996 Nasa and the White House made the explosive announcement that the rock contained traces of Martian bugs.
The meteorite, catalogued as Allen Hills (ALH) 84001, crashed onto the frozen wastes of Antarctica 13,000 years ago and was recovered in 1984.
Photographs were released showing elongated segmented objects that appeared strikingly lifelike.

However, the excitement did not last long. Other scientists questioned whether the meteorite samples were contaminated.
They also argued that heat generated when the rock was blasted into space may have created mineral structures that could be mistaken for microfossils.
Behaviour of Tabby's Star in 2005
The star, otherwise known as KIC 8462852, is located 1,400 light years away and has baffled astronomers since being discovered in 2015.
It dims at a much faster rate than other stars, which some experts have suggested is a sign of aliens harnessing the energy of a star.

Recent studies have 'eliminated the possibility of an alien megastructure', and instead, suggests that a ring of dust could be causing the strange signals.
Exoplanets in the Goldilocks zone in 2017
In February 2017 astronomers announced they had spotted a star system with planets that could support life just 39 light years away.
Seven Earth-like planets were discovered orbiting nearby dwarf star 'Trappist-1', and all of them could have water at their surface, one of the key components of life.
Three of the planets have such good conditions, that scientists say life may have already evolved on them.
Researchers claim that they will know whether or not there is life on any of the planets within a decade, and said: 'This is just the beginning.'
In recent years, the skies over New Jersey have been illuminated by mysterious drone formations, leaving residents puzzled and authorities on high alert. These sightings, characterized by groups of drones emitting loud humming noises and flying over critical infrastructure, have raised significant concerns. Notably, on November 26, 2024, such drone activity disrupted a medevac helicopter mission near Branchburg, delaying the transport of a seriously injured patient.

In response, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) implemented temporary flight restrictions over sensitive sites, including the Picatinny Arsenal and President-elect Trump’s Bedminster golf club. The FBI, New Jersey State Police, and the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness launched investigations, with Governor Phil Murphy urging residents to report any sightings.
These incidents coincide with heightened governmental scrutiny of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP), commonly known as UFOs. In July 2023, the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Accountability held a hearing titled “Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena: Implications on National Security, Public Safety, and Government Transparency,” featuring testimonies from former military officials and intelligence officers.
Committee on Oversight and Reform Subsequent hearings in November 2024, such as “Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena: Exposing the Truth,” continued to explore these issues.
Amid this backdrop, a compelling narrative emerges: the recent drone activities in New Jersey may be orchestrated by government agencies to establish a precedent that such aerial phenomena are merely drones. This strategy could serve to debunk future UAP sightings, reinforcing the narrative that extraterrestrial UAPs do not exist.
Historically, the U.S. government has investigated UFO reports through various programs, including Project Sign, Project Grudge, and Project Blue Book. These initiatives concluded that many sightings were attributable to natural phenomena or human-made objects.
Wikipedia In March 2024, a Pentagon report stated that most UFO sightings were misidentifications of ordinary objects, with no evidence supporting extraterrestrial origins.
The timing of the New Jersey drone incidents, following increased congressional interest in UAPs, suggests a deliberate effort to control the narrative. By attributing these sightings to drones, authorities can provide tangible explanations for aerial phenomena, thereby preemptively countering claims of extraterrestrial involvement.
This approach serves multiple purposes. Firstly, it addresses public curiosity and concern by offering concrete explanations for mysterious sightings. Secondly, it reinforces the government’s stance that there is no credible evidence of extraterrestrial UAPs, aligning with previous assessments. Finally, it allows intelligence agencies to manage information dissemination, maintaining control over sensitive national security matters.
However, this strategy raises ethical questions about transparency and public trust. If government agencies are indeed orchestrating drone activities to shape public perception, it could undermine confidence in official communications. Moreover, it may stifle genuine scientific inquiry into unexplained phenomena, as researchers might dismiss anomalous sightings as mere drone operations.
In conclusion, the recent drone activities in New Jersey, when viewed in the context of heightened governmental focus on UAPs, suggest a potential strategy by intelligence agencies to assert that such phenomena are terrestrial in origin. By establishing a pattern of drone-related explanations, authorities can effectively counter claims of extraterrestrial UAPs, reinforcing the narrative that no credible evidence supports their existence. While this may address immediate concerns, it poses significant implications for transparency, public trust, and the pursuit of knowledge regarding the mysteries that continue to captivate the human imagination.

Area 51-linked Navy sailor reveals chilling details after seeing UFO
He doesn't know what he saw, but wonders if one day the truth will be revealed
Joe Harker
A US Navy officer has spoken out about spotting UFOs while working on a warship in the Pacific Ocean in 2023.
Footage was released last week that claimed 'tic tac' shaped objects were spotted by the crew of the USS Jackson on 15 February, 2023.
One of the unidentified objects was supposedly seen exiting the water and then flying away without leaving any sort of exhaust trail.
A man who witnessed it is Senior Chief Operations Specialist Alexandro Wiggins, who has spent 23 years in the US Navy. He said that his father had worked at Area 51.
You know, that place in the middle of the desert where the US keeps a bunch of secret stuff that may or may not have anything to do with aliens.
Alexandro Wiggins was working on board the USS Jackson in 2023 when the crew saw some strange 'tic tac' things
(Public Domain)
Anyhow, as for this sighting, 8newsnow reports that Wiggins was working as a radar specialist on the USS Jackson and his job was to spot objects in the air around the ship.
He said a whole bunch of people in the ships combat information centre saw strange objects on their screens, and described the moment.
He said: "To my surprise, which is something I’ve never witnessed, was a light I noticed on the horizon, it looked as if it were surfacing out of the water and going up
“We only saw the one, and then we see the second one, it was only when we zoom out that we realize, holy crap, there’s two more out here, a total of four."
The sailor said he didn't know exactly what he saw, predicting that whatever it is might become better known when he's much older and it's several decades down the line.
There have been plenty of sightings of 'tic tac' UFOs over the years
(Kevin Dietsch/Getty Images)
"I am skeptical myself as to what I saw that day," he said of some of the former secrets which eventually became well known.
"Maybe one day I’ll know what that was, and I’ll be like 80 or 90 years old, and it’ll be normalized like… the stealth fighter or Area 51. At some point, it’ll be public, but then I’ll be old."
There have been all sorts of sightings over the years of things known as UFOs or UAPs (unidentified flying phenomenon), some harder to verify than others.
Theories behind what goes on at fenced off location known as 'England's Area 51'
Conspiracy theorists have been trying to uncover its operations for years
Britt Jones
While Area 51 is a well-known location which brings in a lot of conspiracy talk, people probably don’t know that the UK seemingly has its own version too.
Tin foil hat wearers have been so passionate about Area 51 and their suspicions about aliens that they even held a mass 'storming' of the facility in 2019.
But the UKs version hasn’t seen as much notoriety, despite wracking up a cult following of people who believe it’s being used for something strange.
So, what really goes on behind its guarded exterior?
RAF Rudloe Manor, formerly known as RAF Box, has been abandoned for the last two decades, and while it’s hidden between the settlements of Box and Corsham in Wiltshire, it’s got a reputation.
Known as 'England's Area 51', the estate features an extensive network of tunnels and bunkers that have been used for a number of purposes over the years.
It was during the Second World War, that Rudloe Manor was used by the RAF's operations group for filtering intelligence on enemy activity.
It was also the former location of a civil defence division responsible for monitoring radiation hazards and nuclear risks at the height of the Cold War.
Conspiracy theorists think the site was actually used to conduct research into UFOs and make contact with extraterrestrials.
Perhaps the most well-known rumour is that it hides the remains of an alien spacecraft and its otherworldly crew.
The theory was actually first put forward by American writer Dorothy Kilgallon, who claimed that the crash unfolded in the 1940s.
She claimed that she was told about the incident by a high-ranking British official, although they wished to remain anonymous.
Rudloe Manor was utilised by for RAF operations in the Second World War.

While it’s not been confirmed that it was used for UFO investigations, with the Ministry of Defence (MOD) even coming out to deny claims, Sky History reported in 2007 that declassified secret files released at the National Archives suggested that the site was used for this purpose in the 1950s.
So…the conspiracies were true?
The publication then pointed out that even though it was no longer being in active use by the MOD, the site is still fenced off and under strict guard.
This peculiar detail means that the conspiracies surrounding the site will never truly die out.
A big believer in the conspiracies is folklore enthusiast Neil Cartwright, who told Sky History: "We all suspected this was happening at Rudloe Manor, but they operated as a clandestine organisation unregulated for decades, never held accountable to the British taxpayer.
"I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this story in the coming years."
The building is still heavily guarded.

In a YouTube video by History describing the theories, people in the comments were convinced it’s all true.
A local to the area wrote: “I live in Corsham and some of my family live right next to the CCC and they have a entrance in their garden but it is blocked of by the army I have always thought what don't they want us to see?”
Others however noted that it’s allegedly a data centre for the navy, containing important strategic information.

A colossal squid has been filmed in its natural habitat for the first time ever, a century after it was first identified by scientists.
The elusive colossal squid has finally been caught on camera, an entire century after it was first discovered.
A team of scientists aboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute's research vessel Falkor filmed a not-so-colossal juvenile measuring 11.8 inches (30 centimeters) long as it swam through the ocean near the South Sandwich Islands at a depth of around 1,968 feet (600 meters).
The video, which was captured on March 9 in the South Atlantic Ocean by a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) named SuBastian, shows the translucent baby squid gently swimming through the abyss of the deep ocean, with its tiny tentacles dangling behind it.

"It's exciting to see the first in situ footage of a juvenile colossal and humbling to think that they have no idea that humans exist," Kat Bolstad, a squid researcher at the the Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand, who was an independent scientific expert consulted to verify the footage, said in a statement. "For 100 years, we have mainly encountered them as prey remains in whale and seabird stomachs and as predators of harvested toothfish."
Colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni) are bigger than even the famous giant squid (Architeuthis dux). They are considered the largest invertebrates on the planet, measuring up to 46 feet (14 m) long — as long as a semitrailer — and weighing as much as 1,100 pounds (500 kilograms). They have the largest eyes of any known animal, which can measure up to 11 inches (27 cm) across — about the size of a soccer ball.

These bizarre creatures live deep beneath the Antarctic waters of the Southern Ocean. They live deeper and deeper with age, with the youngest and smallest squid being found down to about 1,640 feet (500 m), adolescents living between 1,600 and 6,600 feet (500 to 2,000 m), and fully grown adults living even deeper.
This year marks 100 years since the colossal squid was formally identified and named, but in the century since, very few have ever been seen. The species was first discovered after two of its arms were found in the stomach of a sperm whale during the winter of 1924-1925.
The new video is the first-ever live observation of this species in its natural habitat. Dying adult colossal squid have been filmed by fishermen, and the first complete specimen was captured in 2007 by a fishing vessel near Antarctica. Most of what we know about this species and its lifestyle comes from beaks found in sperm whale stomachs. Only 12 complete colossal squid specimens had ever been found as of 2015, and about half of those were juveniles.
The scientists on the previous Falkor expedition in January also filmed the first-ever confirmed footage of the glacial glass squid (Galiteuthis glacialis), which had also never been observed in its natural habitat before now.
"The first sighting of two different squids on back-to-back expeditions is remarkable and shows how little we have seen of the magnificent inhabitants of the Southern Ocean," Jyotika Virmani, Schmidt Ocean Institute's executive director, said in the statement. "These unforgettable moments continue to remind us that the ocean is brimming with mysteries yet to be solved."
A Hole Opened Up in the Sun's Corona and Vented Helium-3

What can Helium-3 (3He) being discharged from the Sun teach us about 3He creation and the Sun’s activity? This is what a recent study published in The Astrophysical Journal hopes to address as an international team of researchers investigated 3He-rich solar energetic particles (SEPs) emitted by the Sun in late 2023. This study has the potential to help astronomers better understand how solar activity could contribute to the production of 3He, the latter of which remains one of the most desired substances due to its potential for nuclear fusion technology on Earth.
For the study, the researchers used the joint NASA-ESA Solar Orbiter to observe the SEPs between October 24-25, 2023, which is currently located at 0.47 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun, or just under halfway between the Sun and the Earth. While SEPs are produced from solar flares or coronal mass ejections (CMEs), which happen regularly, SEPs typically release substances with increased levels of heavy ions like iron. Heavy ions are classified as possessing an atomic number (Z) greater than 10. However, the iron content (Z= 26) in this SEP was found to be normal, with the researchers surprised to discover increased levels of carbon (Z = 6), nitrogen (Z = 7), silicon (Z = 14), and sulfur (Z = 16) within the SEP.
The team then conducted a follow-up observation with NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, which orbits the Earth in a circular, geosynchronous orbit at an altitude of 35,789 kilometers (22,238 miles), so significantly farther from the Sun than Solar Orbiter. In the end, SDO successfully identified the source of the SEP as a solar jet emanating from coronal hole, which is an area of the Sun where open magnetic field lines enable solar winds to escape to space and are often darker in color compared to the rest of the Sun’s surface.
“Surprisingly, the magnetic field strength in this region was weak, more typical of quiet solar areas rather than active regions,” said Dr. Radoslav Bučík, who is an astrophysicist at the Southwest Research Institute and lead author of the study. “This finding supports earlier theories suggesting that 3He enrichment is more likely in weakly magnetized plasma, where turbulence is minimal.”
Other Helium-3 Sources
The Sun produces 3He from the nuclear fusion occurring in its massive core when it converts hydrogen to helium. While this is part of the Sun’s natural processes that enable our planet to sustain life, producing 3He in a laboratory or other Earth-based setting has proven incredibly difficult due to the massive temperatures that have to be duplicated, often requiring a minimum of 100 million degrees Celsius (180 million degrees Fahrenheit).
While the Earth’s mantle contains traces of 3He from the planet’s formation, its decay over billions of years has converted most of the original 3He to Helium-4 (4He). Therefore, scientists have hypothesized that the closest location to obtain active samples of 3He is the lunar surface due to the solar wind’s daily bombardment, resulting in 3He becoming embedded in the lunar regolith (dust). However, it is estimated that successful processing of 1 gram (0.025 ounces) of 3He would require approximately 150 tons of lunar regolith to be mined. Additionally, successful nuclear fusion here on Earth has yet to be realized.
While humanity continues to struggle with nuclear fusion and the need for 3He, this study demonstrates the awesome power of the Sun and how much we still don’t know about its complex and intricate processes responsible for providing life-giving power here on Earth.
What new discoveries about solar activity and 3He will astronomers make in the coming years and decades? Only time will tell, and this is why we science!
Is There Life on an Alien Planet? Fresh Findings Revive the Debate
By Alan Boyle

Two new studies have sparked fresh debate about a faraway planet with a weird atmosphere. One of the studies claims additional evidence for the presence of life on the planet K2-18 b, based on chemical clues. The other study argues that such clues can be produced on a lifeless world covered with hot magma.
The hubbub illustrates how tricky it can be to determine whether life exists beyond Earth by looking for "biosignatures" with powerful telescopes — in this case, NASA's James Webb Space Telescope. It also illustrates the potential pitfalls of reporting provocative results.
A study published today in the Astrophysical Journal Letters attracted widespread attention when it reported that the chemical signatures of dimethyl sulfide and dimethyl disulfide had been found in K2-18 b's atmosphere. The findings were a follow-up to an earlier study published by the same researchers, which detected carbon-bearing molecules including methane and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
What's so special about dimethyl sulfide and dimethyl disulfide? The study noted that on Earth, those two chemicals are produced only by life, primarily microbial life such as marine plankton. The researchers claimed that the findings were consistent with their view that K2-18 b was what's known as a Hycean planet — a habitable, ocean-covered world with a hydrogen-rich atmosphere.
"Given everything we know about this planet, a Hycean world with an ocean that is teeming with life is the scenario that best fits the data we have," Cambridge astronomer Nikku Madhusudhan, the study's lead researcher, said in a news release.
The teeming-with-life scenario drew skeptical comments from an assortment of other scientists who have been studying the potential for exoplanetary life. The planetary science community has long debated the case for Hycean planets and detecting life on such planets.
"This paper adds (weak) evidence to one model amongst many of a complicated planet atmosphere," Oxford astronomer Chris Lintott wrote in a series of posts to Bluesky. "Currently, it's not much more of a hint of life as the lottery ticket in my back pocket is a hint of my having a million quid by Monday."
Arguing against the teeming-with-life scenario, researchers have noted that the chemical signature of dimethyl sulfide has been detected in the lifeless environments of a comet and the interstellar medium. One study, published last year, suggested that the sort of atmospheric chemistry documented previously by JWST could be due to interactions with a boiling-hot ocean of magma.
The magma hypothesis is front and center in a study that's just been accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. That study was based on JWST observations of a different sub-Neptune planet, a cousin of K2-18 b known as TOI-270 d. A research team led by Christopher Glein of the Southwest Research Institute found that TOI-270 d's weird atmospheric chemistry could be explained by cooking methane and carbon dioxide in the presence of hot hydrogen and magma.
Glein said the findings could apply to K2-18b as well. "There appears to be a lack of diagnostic evidence for a Hycean state on these types of planets, at least on the ones we've observed so far," he said in an email.
John Stott, an astrophysicist at Lancaster University, phrased a similar assessment more colorfully in a Bluesky quip: "It will probably turn out to be vulcanism rather than Vulcans."
The questions surrounding dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) are still up in the air. "I have not yet looked into whether this model can produce DMS and DMDS to the reported abundances (I just learned about this new work a day ago)," Glein wrote. "That's an important question, but first we need to confirm that these species are confidently detected."
The confidence level for the JWST observations reported in Madhusudhan's paper is at the 3-sigma level. That's statistically significant, but it doesn't quite hit the 5-sigma level that's associated with a confirmed discovery. Madhusudhan and his colleagues say that 16 to 24 hours of follow-up observation time with JWST may help them reach the 5-sigma level.
In a news release, Glein said the study of alien atmospheric chemistry was worthwhile even if it doesn't produce conclusive evidence of extraterrestrial life.
“While it is a bit disappointing to find that TOI-270 d is unlikely to be habitable, this planet still offers a fantastic opportunity to explore alternative paths of planetary origins and evolution,” Glein said. “We are learning much more about the crazy configurations of planets that nature comes up with.”
This week's debate raises a larger issue about the search for chemical biosignatures. How strong would the evidence have to be to convince scientists that the chemical compounds associated with life on Earth could only be produced by biological activity?
Stott was skeptical any such evidence would be strong enough.
"If we ever did find an exoplanet with robust biomarkers, it would be interesting philosophically," he wrote. "Personally, I'd only believe it if either: 1. We had a physical sample of the life (impossible anytime soon unless in solar system); or 2. A clear broadcast signal from intelligent life."
An Interesting Solution to the Hubble Tension: The Universe is Slowly Spinning
By Brian Koberlein

Everything in the Universe spins. Galaxies, planets, stars, and black holes all rotate, even if just a bit. It comes from the fact that the clouds of scattered gas and dust of the cosmos are never perfectly symmetrical. But the Universe as a whole does not rotate. Some objects spin one way, some another, but add them all up, and the total rotation is zero. At least that's what we've thought. But a new study suggests that the Universe does rotate, and this rotation solves the big mystery of cosmology known as the Hubble tension.
The idea of a rotating universe isn't new. Even Einstein contemplated the idea. Most famously, Kurt Gödel devised a rotating model universe that is a solution to Einstein's field equations. The Gödel metric, as it's known, has some really strange properties. While standard cosmology metrics such as the one used in our standard model have space plus one time dimension, Gödel's model has two time-like dimensions. Distant galaxies would have a strange rotational bias to them, and light would spontaneously polarize. Even more bizarre is that the universe would be filled with time loops. Known as closed timelike curves (CTCs), they would allow you to meet yourself in the past simply by traveling through space.
Gödel's model is an interesting exploration of the theoretical limits of relativity, but it doesn't resemble the real Universe in any significant way. Astronomers have looked for things like galactic spin bias and asymmetries in the cosmic microwave background that would suggest cosmic rotation, and they all support a non-rotating universe to the limits of observation.
But our observational limits have gotten better over time, and they seem to have painted us into a theoretical quandary. We know the Universe began in a hot, dense state we call the Big Bang, and since that time, about 13.8 billion years ago, the cosmos has expanded. It continues to expand at an ever-increasing rate, thanks to dark energy. But what that increasing rate is, exactly, is a bit of a mystery. Observations of fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background find that the Universe expands at about 67 km/s per Mpc. However, observations of supernovae and Cepheid variables in distant galaxies find the Universe expanding at a faster rate of 73 km/s per Mpc. According to the standard model, these values should agree. The fact that they don't is known as the Hubble tension. This mystery stands at the heart of modern cosmology, so it isn't surprising that all sorts of wild solutions have been proposed. Modified gravity, quintessence, exotic supersymmetry particles—you name it. So why not reconsider the rotating universe model?
Matching cosmic rotation to observed Hubble values.
Credit: Szigeti, et al
This new model doesn't use the Gödel metric, but instead presumes the Universe is filled with a uniform rotating fluid. Non-rotating versions of this fluid have been proposed to explain dark energy, but the addition of rotation means that spacetime is given a twist, similar to the frame-dragging effect we've observed for rotating masses such as Earth. As the authors show, the rotating fluid would bias our observation of cosmic expansion with increasing distance. In other words, the more distant our measure of the Hubble parameter, the smaller it would appear.
Taking the nearby observations of cosmic expansion as the most accurate, the team assumes the 73 km/s per Mpc value is correct and then asks how fast the fluid would have to rotate to match the 67 km/s per Mpc observations of the cosmic microwave background. Matching the data, they obtained a rotation rate of ω = 3.5 radians per billion years. On a basic level, cosmic rotation can solve the Hubble tension problem. Interestingly, the rotation rate the authors found is just under the limit that would create closed timelike curves. The model rotates as fast as it possibly can before all temporal logic is tossed out the window.
While it's a fascinating result, there are plenty of caveats. To begin with, the model is a tweak model. The authors assume it's true to prove it works. There's nothing inherently wrong with tweak models, but tweak models are weak models, as the saying goes. Just because it can solve the problem doesn't mean it's the solution. Additionally, the introduction of a rotating fluid will affect things such as galactic evolution and galaxy clustering. The authors are aware of this and note that their next goal is to determine observable tests of their model. Time (and space) will tell if the model works in the end.
A sphere-shaped UFO was recently filmed darting back and forth in a zig-zag motion above a city in Colombia, drawing the attention of local residents and leaving many feeling unsettled. The object appeared to be some sort of orb with a silver and grey coating and was flying in a very unpredictable manner.
Luckily, one person was able to capture some footage of the orb-like UFO. In the video, the mysterious metallic sphere first appears above the witness. Then it began moving erratically, flying down the side of a hill, back up into the camera frame, then zooms around in front of him going from left to right, and then flying at great speed over the city. It eventually comes to a stop, landing in a field. Then, for some reason, the footage suddenly comes to an end without any further explanation.
What was it? So far there has been no definitive report explaining the fast-moving, sphere-shaped UFO. Many have speculated, of course. Some believe it was just some sort of hoax. Others think it might have been a balloon of some kind. While others are inclined to believe that it was some sort of alien technology.
This is far from the first time that an orb-shaped UFO has been reported been seen without any explanation. In 2023, a NASA group that was formed to study UFOs held a briefing to discuss their findings and noted the large number of unexplained metallic orbs that have been spotted at high altitudes around the world.
A group of unidentified flying objectsspotted by Navy sailors is raising eyebrows after witnesses reported watching the oddly-shaped aircraft rise from the ocean before jetting off in a synchronized fashion last year.
The four aircraft were spotted by sailors aboard USS Jackson while off the coast of California last year, Jeremy Corbell, co-host of the "Weaponized" podcast, told Fox 11.
"[This] is a machine that is able to outpace, outmaneuver, and outperform anything that we know of that's been made by technology and terrestrial nations," Corbell said.
An aircraft is seen in a GOFAST video released by the Pentagon.

The UFOs reportedly emerged from the Pacific Ocean and were spotted by sailors before showing up on the ship’s radar, an unnamed witness told Corbell.
Footage recorded by the Navy warship and obtained by Corbell shows the four aircraft grouping together before racing off in unison.
"Everybody on the ship knew they were seeing something extraordinary," Corbell said. "So obviously people thought it was important to document and then finally witnesses came forward."
A recording shows a UFO flying by USS Omaha off the coast of San Diego in July 2019.
(Jeremy Corbell/WeaponizedPodcast)
The Navy and Corbell did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
Corbell noted the footage shows the objects do not have a wing or tail, raising questions regarding the aircraft’s ability to fly. However, Corbell does not believe the unidentified objects are nefarious or operated by a foreign adversary.
"I'd rather these things be from another planet than an adversarial nation, because if it was an adversarial nation then their ability to weaponize that technology would be unprecedented," Corbell said. "Luckily, we don't see a fingerprint for that."
However, military officials claim the sighting was never recorded.
"[The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office] has no record of this alleged UAP incident," a Pentagon spokesperson told Fox News Digital in a statement.
The flying objects draw striking similarities to the infamous "Tic Tac"-shaped aircraft sighting by USS Nimitz off the coast of Southern California in 2004. The incident drew national attention in 2017, exposing previously unknown programs within the Department of Defense relating to UFO research.
In 2020, the Pentagon released three unclassified Navy videos from November 2004 and January 2015.
"The aerial phenomena observed in the videos remain characterized as ‘unidentified’," the Pentagon said in a statement.
Last year, a Pentagon official testified to Congress that the Pentagon had solved a well-known mystery surrounding a flying object spotted by USS Theodore Roosevelt in 2016.
The UFO spotted flying at high speeds above the Atlantic Ocean was nothing out of the ordinary, but instead a trick of the eye causing objects to appear as if they were moving much faster, referred to as a "parallax," according to Dr. Jon Kosloski, the director of the All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office.
"Through a very careful geospatial intelligence analysis and using trigonometry, we assess with high confidence that the object is not actually close to the water, but is rather closer to 13,000 feet," Kosloski said.
As for the four aircraft spotted by Navy sailors last year, Corbell believes there is no cause for alarm.
De Saga van David Grusch: Whistleblowers en het Potentieel Voor Geïnfiltreerde Informatie
Inleiding

1. Wie was David Grusch?
“I was informed in the course of my official duties of a multi-decade UAP crash retrieval and reverse engineering program to which I was denied access,” he said.
2. Hoe kwam David Grusch opbiebcht?

New and ‘strongest evidence yet’ has emerged suggesting that there is another world that could have life on it.
Scientists have discovered early signs that a distant planet in space called K2-18b could have some life.
The promising finding was made by the Cambridge University team studying the atmosphere
They detected signs of chemical molecules, which on Earth are produced by living organisms such as marine algae.
This is what a ‘Hycean’ world could look like (Picture: Reuters)
The scientists used the James Webb Space Telescope – the largest telescope in space armed with a high-resolution equipment that can reach further into space than its predecessor the Hubble Space Telescope.
However, the expert team stressed that more evidence is needed after the promising find.
How far is planet K2-18b?
The chemical fingerprints were of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and/or dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), located in the atmosphere of K2-18b.
A report said: ‘While an unknown chemical process may be the source of these molecules in K2-18b’s atmosphere, the results are the strongest evidence yet that life may exist on a planet outside our solar system.’
K2-18b is the only exoplanet known to host both water and temperatures that could support life (Picture: AFP/Getty)
K2-18b isn’t a short journey away – it lives around seven hundred trillion miles from Earth.
For conventional spacecraft to travel that distance, it would take possibly hundreds of years.
Why is the finding significant?
This was the first time astronomers found carbon-based molecules in the atmosphere of an exoplanet in the habitable zone of space.
Scientists suspect it could be a ‘Hycean’ planet – a habitable, ocean-covered world.
Professor Nikku Madhusudhan, from Cambridge’s Institute of Astronomy and the research lead, said: ‘Earlier theoretical work had predicted that high levels of sulfur-based gases like DMS and DMDS are possible on Hycean worlds.
‘And now we’ve observed it, in line with what was predicted. Given everything we know about this planet, a Hycean world with an ocean that is teeming with life is the scenario that best fits the data we have.’
He said there were major questions concerning the processes that might be producing the chemicals.
As with any research, it was ‘important that we’re deeply sceptical of our own results’ and that rigorous further testing was needed despite the excitement.
The prof continued: ‘Decades from now, we may look back at this point in time and recognise it was when the living universe came within reach.
‘This could be the tipping point, where suddenly the fundamental question of whether we’re alone in the universe is one we’re capable of answering.’
The possibility of alien life continues to drive scientists determined to find evidence that we are not the only living things in the galaxy.
So Did the Antikythera Mechanism Actually Work? New Research Casts Doubt
The Antikythera Mechanism has long been hailed as a marvel of ancient technology, frequently referred to as the world’s first analog computer. But despite decades of study and technological advancements in imaging and simulation, its exact purpose and level of precision remain a subject of considerable debate. A recent study adds a new dimension to this discussion, raising the possibility that the Mechanism may have functioned far less reliably than previously assumed—if it was designed to actually function at all.
Discovered in 1901 among the remains of a shipwreck off the coast of the Greek island of Antikythera, the Mechanism has been dated to the late second or early first century BC. Since then, scholars have attempted to determine how this complex arrangement of gears and dials was used in antiquity. The device includes a hand crank, dozens of interlocking gears, and multiple indicators that, according to researchers, could show the date on both Egyptian and Greek calendars, track the positions of the sun, moon, and known planets within the zodiac, and even predict solar and lunar eclipses. By any measure, it appeared to be an engineering marvel well beyond its time.
Only one such device has ever been discovered, and that has fueled intense scholarly interest and a wide array of interpretations. Some propose that it was used by court astrologers, while others believe it may have served educational or demonstrative purposes. Still others suggest it was a prototype from an inventor whose full vision was never realized.
Regardless of its original function, the level of craftsmanship displayed by the Mechanism is undeniable. However, recent findings challenge earlier assumptions about its effectiveness.
New Modeling Reveals Severe Functional Limitations
In a study submitted April 1 to the preprint server arXiv, a team of Argentinian scientists introduced a computer simulation of the Antikythera Mechanism that incorporates both structural inaccuracies and the device's distinctive triangle-shaped gear teeth, the latteer an element that earlier reconstructions tended to simplify or overlook.
A realistic model of what the Antikythera Mechanism is believed to have looked like in its pristine, original state.
This simulation sought to replicate not only the intended function of the Mechanism, but also the real-world implications of its imperfections. Because the gears were not spaced with exact uniformity, and due to the geometric effects introduced by the triangular teeth, the researchers were able to estimate how the Mechanism would have actually operated in practice.
What they found was surprising: the device could only be turned approximately four months forward before it jammed or the gears disengaged entirely. At that point, the user would have been required to manually reset the entire system before using it again.
This finding calls into question whether the Antikythera Mechanism could have been intended for long-term use. One possibility, raised by the authors of the study, is that the device was never designed to operate for extended periods without manual correction. It may have functioned more like a mechanical watch that periodically requires winding and adjustment. This would suggest that its builders were aware of its operational limits and may have factored that into its intended usage.
Yet this interpretation is at odds with the extraordinary complexity and precision seen in the gearwork. If the goal was merely to produce a demonstrative or decorative object, it is difficult to understand why so much care would have gone into such intricate engineering. The design includes dozens of gears, many of which are nested and coordinated in ways that suggest a serious understanding of astronomical cycles and mechanical principles.
Fragment A (rear) of the Antikythera mechanism, which consists of a complex system of 32 wheels and plates bearing inscriptions relating to the signs of the zodiac and the months.
Another explanation put forward by the researchers is that the apparent inaccuracies in the device may be a side effect of its corroded state. The Antikythera Mechanism spent more than two millennia submerged underwater, and as a result much of its structure is now corroded, and many parts are missing or deformed. Even with the aid of CT scanning and advanced imaging techniques, modern researchers may be working from incomplete or misleading data, sabotaging their attempts to recreate the Mechanism’s action.
The simulation developed in the recent study was based on current measurements, but if the device’s original gear placements and teeth were more precisely constructed than what survives today, its real-world performance could have been significantly better than suggested by the model. The researchers acknowledge this possibility, noting that “CT scans can only provide a certain level of resolution, and two thousand years of corrosion may have warped or distorted the components far beyond their original state.”
Uncertainties Remain (and May Always Remain)
If the Mechanism originally functioned with higher accuracy and less mechanical resistance, then it could indeed have been used as a reliable astronomical calculator, capable of producing forecasts, tracking planetary movements, and modeling calendrical systems with a high degree of precision.
Regardless of which interpretation proves closer to the truth, the Antikythera Mechanism certainly looks like a remarkable artifact. Its complexity is unmatched in the archaeological record for more than a thousand years following its creation, and if it really worked it was an amazing achievement.
As imaging techniques improve and further computational models are developed, researchers may yet uncover more details about how it was built, and how it was meant to operate. Then again, they might discover that the results of the analysis by the Argentinian scientists is correct, and what they have is either a failed engineering experiment or a device made for fun that had no deeper purpose.
Regardless of what the real answer turns out to be, it is clear that the Antikythera Mechanism fascinates people today just as much as it did more than a century ago when it was first rescued from its watery burial.

Did a Pole Shift 41,000 Years Ago Doom the Neanderthals to Extinction?
Newly published research suggests that prehistoric Homo sapiens developed innovative ways to protect themselves from increased ultraviolet (UV) radiation during periods of extreme instability in Earth’s magnetic field, while their close cousins the Neanderthals did not. While this may not have been the only reason why Neanderthals went extinct, it might very well have been the most decisive cause of their decline.
These environmental shifts, known as geomagnetic excursions (or more popularly as pole shifts), happen when Earth’s magnetic poles wander from their usual positions due to changes in the planet’s liquid outer core, and they have happened at different times throughout history. One notable event, the Laschamps excursion, occurred around 40,000 to 42,000 years ago. During this time, Earth’s magnetic field dramatically weakened to about 10 percent of its current strength, allowing much more radiation to reach the planet’s surface. The magnetic North Pole shifted from the Arctic and dropped down near the equator.
The Earth’s magnetic field, which is produced by electrical currents in the molten iron core, normally protects the planet from harmful cosmic rays and solar particles. A weakened field reduces this protection, thinning the ozone layer and increasing UV exposure.
As a result of this weakened shield, auroras that are typically seen only near the poles may have been visible across much wider areas. “Auroras would have been visible in much wider areas, possibly even near the equator,” said Agnit Mukhopadhyay, a University of Michigan researcher, in an interview with New Scientist.
While auroras can be beautiful, in this case they would have been harbingers of doom. This surge in UV radiation would have posed a serious risk to both Homo sapiens and Neanderthals, and would have required meaningful adaptations to survive—and as Mukhopadhyay and his fellow researchers explain in a new article published in Science Advances, the evidence shows that our human ancestors rose to the challenge, while Neanderthals did not.

Two Closely Related Species, and Two Wildly Divergent Fates
Archaeological records indicate that Homo sapiens began creating tailored clothing during this time, using tools such as needles and hide scrapers. Raven Garvey, an anthropologist at the University of Michigan, noted in Discover Magazinethat this clothing likely served a dual purpose. “Tailored clothing could have also provided another unintended benefit—protection from sun damage,” she said.
In addition to clothing, Homo sapiens increasingly used ochre—a reddish pigment made of iron oxide, clay, and silica—during this period. When applied to the skin, ochre offers natural protection against the sun.
“There have been some experimental tests that show it has sunscreen-like properties. It’s a pretty effective sunscreen, and there are also ethnographic populations that have used it primarily for that purpose,” Garvey explained.
These adaptations likely gave Homo sapiens an edge over Neanderthals, who did not seem to adopt similar sun protection measures. Some researchers believe the harsh environmental conditions brought on by the Laschamps excursion contributed to Neanderthal extinction, as their inability to adapt to increased radiation would have had lethal consequences. Scientists have been searching for reasons to explain why Neanderthals and Homo sapies met such divergent fates around 40,000 years ago, and different responses to an environmental emergency could certainly explain it.

Seeking shelter in caves was another behavior that helped humans survive. These natural structures provided some level of protection from UV exposure.
“We found that many of those regions actually match pretty closely with early human activity from 41,000 years ago, specifically an increase in the use of caves and an increase in the use of prehistoric sunscreen,” Mukhopadhyay said.
Modeling a Catastrophe
To better understand these ancient events, researchers at the University of Michigan developed complex models simulating the effects of the Laschamps excursion. They integrated a global geomagnetic field model, a space plasma environment model, and an aurora prediction model. Using magnetic signatures locked in volcanic rocks and sediments, Mukhopadhyay and his team reconstructed a detailed 3D image of Earth’s magnetic field during the Laschamps event.
“In the study, we combined all of the regions where the magnetic field would not have been connected, allowing cosmic radiation, or any kind of energetic particles from the Sun, to seep all the way into the ground,” Mukhopadhyay said.
While the findings are not definitive, they offer a new perspective on how early humans may have responded to climate and environmental changes.
The research implies that early Homo sapiens may have developed strategic behavioral responses to environmental stress. Though Homo sapiens and Neanderthals coexisted in Europe starting around 56,000 years ago, Neanderthals disappeared during the time of the Laschamps event, which now seems unlikely to have been a coincidence. The innovative protective strategies employed by Homo sapiens may have contributed not only to their survival but also to their eventual spread across Europe and Asia.

It isn’t known when the next geomagnetic excursion or pole shift will happen. But it does seem to be a matter of if rather than when, and if it happened today, it could be devastating. Satellites and navigation apps would be rendered useless, and power grids would be disrupted at a cost of up to US$48 billion each day in the United States alone. Scientists say that certain parts of the planet could become all but inhabitable for centuries, as the UV radiation reaching the Earth’s surface at those spots would be too strong to survive.
If there is any good news, it is that humans found a way to adapt and ride out the storm during the Laschamps event. Perhaps the same thing would happen this time, although at this point it does seem we are completely unprepared for such a catastrophe, while at the same time being more vulnerable—and that is deeply concerning.

Wetenschappers maken stuk kip in labo: “doorbraak” maakt kweken grotere lappen in toekomst mogelijk

Strongest Evidence of Alien Life Yet Found 124 Light-Years Away

Astronomers announced Thursday that they had detected the most promising "hints" of potential life on a planet beyond our Solar System, though other scientists expressed scepticism.
There has been vigorous debate in scientific circles about whether the planet K2-18b, which is 124 light years away in the Leo constellation, could be an ocean world capable of hosting microbial life.
Using the James Webb Space Telescope, a British-US team of researchers detected signs of two chemicals in the planet's atmosphere long considered to be "biosignatures" indicating extraterrestrial life.
On Earth, the chemicals dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and dimethyl disulfide are produced only by life, mostly microscopic marine algae called phytoplankton.

The researchers emphasised caution, saying that more observations were needed to confirm these findings, and that they were not announcing a definitive discovery.
But the implications could be huge, according to Nikku Madhusudhan, a Cambridge University astrophysicist and lead author of the study, published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.
"What we are finding at this point are hints of possible biological activity outside the solar system," he told a press conference.
"Frankly, I think this is the closest we have come to seeing a feature that we can attribute to life."
But outside experts pointed to disputes over previous discoveries about the exoplanet, adding that these chemicals could have been created by unknown means having nothing to do with life.
Chemical clues
More than eight times the mass of Earth and 2.5 times as big, K2-18b is a rare exoplanet that orbits its star in a habitable or "goldilocks" zone.
This means it is neither too hot nor too cold to have liquid water, considered the most important ingredient for life.
Telescopes observe such far-off exoplanets when they cross in front of their star, allowing astronomers to analyse how molecules block the light streaming through their atmosphere.
In 2023, the Webb telescope detected methane and carbon dioxide in K2-18b's atmosphere, the first time such carbon-based molecules were detected on an exoplanet in a habitable zone.
It also detected weak signals of the chemical DMS, leading astronomers to turn Webb towards the planet again a year ago, this time using its mid-infrared instrument to detect different wavelengths of light.
They found much stronger signs of the chemicals, though still well below the "five sigma" threshold of statistical significance scientists seek for such discoveries.
Even if the results are confirmed, it would not necessarily mean that the planet is home to life.
Last year, scientists found traces of DMS on a comet, which suggested it can be produced in non-organic ways.
However the concentration of the chemical observed on K2-18b appears to be thousands of times stronger than levels on Earth, strongly suggesting a biological origin, Madhusudhan said.
Are we alone in the universe?
K2-18b has long been considered the premier candidate for a "hycean planet" – an ocean world bigger than Earth with a hydrogen-rich atmosphere.
These planets would not be expected to be home to intelligent alien life, but rather tiny microbes similar to those in Earth's oceans billions of years ago.
Some research has questioned whether the currently proposed hycean planets are too close to their stars to support liquid water, including K2-18b, which orbits its star every 33 days.
Raymond Pierrehumbert, a planetary physics professor at Oxford University, has conducted separate research indicating K2-18b is too hot for life.
If the planet did have water, it would be "hellishly hot" and uninhabitable, he told AFP, adding that oceans of lava were more plausible.
Sara Seager, a professor of planetary science at MIT, called for patience, pointing to previous claims of water vapour in K2-18b's atmosphere that turned out to be a different gas.
And within our solar system, Mars, Venus and moons such as Saturn's Enceladus all have "more chance to be realised as life-hosting," she told AFP.
Madhusudhan estimated that it would take just 16 to 24 more hours of Webb's time to confirm their findings, which could happen in the next few years.
Even beyond K2-18b, Madhusudhan said Webb and future telescopes could allow humanity to discover life outside our home planet sooner than one might think.
"This could be the tipping point, where suddenly the fundamental question of whether we're alone in the universe is one we're capable of answering," he said.

Onduidelijkheid over oorsprong gassen
"We zouden alle andere opties strikt moeten uitsluiten voordat we leven claimen."
