Je kunt ook nooit even weggaan of precies dàn gebeurt er iets waar je wel bij had willen zijn. Zo’n 25 jaar al stond de blauwe gasbol, ooit bedoeld als opslag voor barre tijden, nutteloos te wezen. In 2005 is een groep kunstenaars in gesprek gegaan met voormalig eigenaar Essent om er een speciaal kunstwerk van te mogen maken.
Op 4 juni is, na bijna een jaar keihard werken, de opgepimpte gasbol onthuld. 17 Toyistische kunstenaars hebben ruim 6.000 manuren gestoken in de realisatie van het kunstwerk ‘Leven met energie', een mega- schilderij over de ontwikkeling van Emmen. Daarmee wordt het verhaal van de energie regio Zuidoost-Drenthe verteld: een prachtige en kleurrijke vertelling van turf en veen naar zon, wind en water.
Op 29 juli 2009 werd begonnen met de opbouw van de steiger rond de bol. Daarna werd hij helemaal wit geschilderd om zo een geschikte ondergrond te creëren voor het te schilderen kunstwerk.
Kunstenaars uit Nederland, België, Italië, IJsland, Zuid-Afrika, Maleisië, Thailand, Amerika en Mexico hebben een indrukwekkende teamprestatie geleverd door onder soms zeer moeilijke omstandigheden hun kunstwerk op de bol aan te brengen. De bol, met een oppervlak van 1.200 m2, is vijfmaal beschilderd.

Deze stalen bol is nu omgedoopt tot De Stip en staat symbool voor groene, duurzame energie. Zij laat zien dat Emmen vanaf 4 juni ‘bol staat van de energie'. Met de onthulling van De Stip door wethouder Mariet Thalens is Emmen een spectaculair kunstwerk rijker van maar liefst 22 meter hoog.
En… van de € 450.000 die dit project gekost heeft is al € 350.000 binnen. Er worden nu zeefdrukken van dit kunstwerk verkocht om de rest binnen te halen.
