A new study has revealed that at the end of the Triassic Period, there was a “lost” mass extinction and a rain storm that lasted more than a million years. These events happened around 233 million years ago when there was one supercontinent named Pangaea.

The long-lasting rain storm has been named the Carnian Pluvial Episode (or CPE) and a huge mass extinction occurred during that time that killed off one-third of marine species in addition to large amounts of land animals and plants that died as a result of climate change caused by volcanic eruptions in Wrangellia in what is now the western coast of Canada.

In fact, studies have suggested that at least 5,000 gigatons of carbon was released into Earth’s atmosphere during the eruptions that triggered the climate change. There would have been a lot more humidity as well as huge rain storms. The oceans then turned acidic which killed off countless marine species.

Even though the CPE caused major extinctions, there was a silver lining as the researchers described this period as being a “turnover” that ultimately helped the dinosaurs dominate the land and aided with the evolution of numerous animals – some of which are still around today.

Jacopo Dal Corso, who is a geology professor at the China University of Geosciences in Wuhan and the lead author of the study, explained this further in an interview with Eos.org, “A key feature of the CPE is that extinction was very rapidly followed by a big radiation [of new species],”adding, “A number of groups that have a central role in today’s ecosystems appeared or diversified for the first time in the Carnian [an age within the Triassic that lasted from 237 to 227 million years ago].”

Coral reefs and plankton are part of these groups in addition to several species like lizards, frogs, turtles, crocodilians, and certain dinosaurs that prospered for the following 150 million years. And conifer trees appeared for the first time during the CPE.

The Carnian Pluvial Episode paved the way for dinosaurs.

Mike Benton, who is a professor of vertebrate paleontology at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom and a co-author of the study, stated that part of the research focused on how significant the CPE was in comparison to other mass extinctions that occurred in Earth’s history. “It appears not as substantial as the “big five”, but not far off, and with proper analysis in future it might turn out to be of similar magnitude,” he explained. “The end-Permian extinction wiped out 95% of all marine species, and the Triassic was a time of recovery.” “It now seems the CPE was a key punctuation [in that process].”

The study was published in the journal Science Advances where it can be read in full.

Hey guys, I was searching on Google map the area around Area 51. Then I ended up between Area 51 and Nellis AFB firing range. Thats the general area that Charles Hall said he worked with the Tall Whites who were allotted an area of land. The land is all off limits to the public, and I think I found out why. I found two faces and one of the faces is the exact same species as the one from the real life abduction case Fire In The Sky. The alien face look the same, yet is much older with wrinkles and is wearing a symbolic hat with jewel or third eye on it. This is a highly scientific species and they fear nothing because they do live forever. They are short of patience and long on time and knowledge. Aliens make these faces near their bases...its a cultural ritual to pay respects to the fallen and to make those other species out there know of their greatness. As I said before, when you find the face, you find the base.

Witness report: 

Star like objects in Pleadians stars cluster style. 7 starlike objects with one 8th one flashing constantly in intervals where flying north to south. After 9th object join but from certain distance. Look like Pleadians (sorry about spelling)star cluster. Some of non flashing objects slightly change direction, not to much but like stars would in milestones ( to compare).

Than when first appearance past , 10th flashing object appears (last video). Interesting thing was that that night i wake up to go to bathroom, and i always in this occasion, open sliding door and look at the sky.

Well that night my vision was: all night sky was covered in Flower of life patterns, that never occurred to me before, i never drink alcohol or using any substance that it may trigger hallucinations. This day in UFO history: Japanese Airline UFO Experience in 1986

A routine flight ended not exactly what was expected. It was Japan Airlines 747 cargo flight, carrying a load of French wine to Tokyo from Paris.

The flight crew was composed of seasoned Captain Kenju Terauchi, co-pilot TakanoriTamefuji, and Yoshio Tsukuba, flight engineer. The flight plan carried flight 1628 from Paris to Tokyo.

The first leg of the trip was on November 16, 1986 from Paris to Reykjavik, Iceland then continued flying over Greenland the next day and then across northern Canada.

Just moments after they crossed into Alaska at around 5:09 p.m. local time, Anchorage Air Traffic Control instructed the flight for their path. They were at 35,000 feet and moving at a speed of around 600 mph.

Captain Terauchi noticed the lights at around 5:11 PM local time about 200 feet below in which he thought at that time an American jet fighter from nearby air force bases, patrolling the airspace of Alaska. However, few minutes later, he noticed that the lights were at the same pace as with his own aircraft, which he found unusual for patrolling jets.

They were paying attention to the lights for about seven minutes when all of a sudden two spaceships came to their front shooting off lights. The lights shined the inside cockpit brightly and the captain felt warm in his face.

Terauchi suspected that the two objects were the lights he noticed below them that suddenly jumped in front of him. The two objects keep on moving in unison with a strange rocking motion while keeping pace with the 747 for several minutes.

The two mysterious aerial objects then changed to a side-by-side arrangement after around seven minutes.

Terauchi said the lights were amber and whitish that appeared like flames coming out of several rocket exhaust ports. Co-pilot Tamefuji described the lights as assorted Christmas lights with a salmon color.

Flight engineer Tsukuba did not get a good view of the lights, but he emphasized that the lights in front of them were different from town lights.

Capt.Terauchi asked Tskububa to give him a camera to take a picture of the lights, but failed to do so because of his unfamiliarity of the camera and he experienced problem with the auto-focus. The objects then flew off to the left and disappeared without a trace.

Onlookers were left stunned by the changing lights spotted across an 80-mile radius over Texas, with some convinced of an alien visit

Mesmerising footage shows a series of glowing lights hovering above Texas sparking fears of a possible UFO.

The mysterious lights were spotted changing formation in the night sky over three separate counties across an 80-mile radius.

Stargazers in and around Dallas chimed in with sightings after footage of the bizarre presence over Duncanville, in the south of the city, was shared online.

A flurry of witnesses came forward to claim sightings from multiple sites, with some convinced the lights were caused by visiting aliens.

Retail manager Javier Estrada III, who filmed the footage, said: "What I saw mesmerised me. I was visiting family for my grandma's birthday and happened to look up.

"I saw glowing lights hovering real slow and that's when I knew it was something out of the ordinary - not scary, just crazy to look at.

"I do believe in extraterrestrials so the first thing that came to mind was a UFO. As soon as I saw it, I was starstruck - it seemed so real.

"I wouldn't mind having aliens come to visit but knowing us in the USA we will probably attack them first."

In Javier's video, four lights are visible in the starry sky, shifting from a kite-like formation to a square one, before drifting apart and out of view.

Two more lights then come into view before the clip ends. They could have been drones.

Sightings were reported from a total eight different areas in and around the city, mainly towards the south, with many describing the lights as forming a "straight line."

Onlookers also reported the phenomenon in Allen, to the north of the city, and Granbury, to the southwest - which are separated by a distance that would take nearly two hours to drive.

And with more than 16,000 people seeing the footage, there were plenty of suggestions as to what the lights could be.

Some suggested the display was caused by drones or Chinese lanterns, but nobody ventured an explanation as to how they were spotted in places so far apart.

Others speculated satellites or weather balloons, though nobody offered any tracking data.

While others turned to aliens or conspiracy theories.

One viewer added: "It's 2020. Anything is possible."

Gkendale – On October 31, 2020, Description: I’m including a picture of what I saw last night 10/31/2020 in Glendale, AZ. the time stamp of the photo is 7:09 PM. The photo is unedited and shows 5 strings like lights. I have tried to research answers as to what it may be and can’t find anything else that looks like it or may explain what it is. No flash was used when the picture was taken and I would really like any help or insight you may have as to what it may possibly be. Thank you for your time.

Terrebonne –On November 9, 2020, it was bright white and large, the size and shape of a hot air balloon but with no gondola. It came from the north and went in a southeast direction. I called the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office. A Deputy called me back. She was able to look up and see it even though she was approximately 4 miles away. She had to go on a call, but looked up an hour later and she still saw it. She said there was no record of anything from the airport of any flights of weird planes.

Note: I suspect that this could be a high altitude balloon, but I don’t have specifics about it. I have had reports of high altitude balloons in the past in the Portland, OR area. A check of winds aloft shows that winds above 10 thousand feet were from the north. The witness said that the object was moving to the southeast. This is fairly consistent with an object drifting with the wind. Of course we don’t know how the height of the object. High altitude balloons can be visible for long distances as they can be very large.

Cabo San Lucas — My Wife and I were on tour with A group of 12 Harleys going down Mexican Baha Peninsula, on the road for 4 days just approaching Cabo San Lucas Mexico taking pictures all the way down when we got to our Hotel room we both were looking through our pictures we both noticed fuzzy cigar shaped object in picture. At first we thought it was A Blimp but it obviously was not, going Way to fast. Didn’t think about it for A couple years. We were watching UFO Sightings on History Channel when they showed sightings that looked like the Picture my wife took A couple years earlier and said HOLLY [removed profanity/cms/fgc] A UFO Tic Tack or flying Cigar in Pacific Ocean area where Military spotted those A while back off San Diego California, looked just like those Navy airplane pictures. Took photos On November 15, 2017.

SpaceX Crew Dragon launches 4 astronauts to space station in 1st operational flight for NASA

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — SpaceX successfully launched its first operational space taxi flight for NASA Sunday (Nov. 15), as a shiny white Falcon 9 rocket took to the skies above Kennedy Space Center here in Florida. 

The rocket lifted off from NASA's historic Pad 39 here at 7:27 p.m. EDT (0027 GMT on Nov. 16) carrying four astronauts in a Crew Dragon capsule to orbit, and then returned to Earth for a drone-ship landing in the Atlantic Ocean.

SpaceX's Crew-1 Dragon, called Resilience, is bound for the International Space Station (ISS), but instead of the traditional crew supplies and research experiments its cargo variant normally carries, this spacecraft carried a different type of cargo into space: three NASA astronauts, Mike Hopkins, Victor Glover, Shannon Walker and Japanese astronaut Soichi Noguchi.

"Well done, that was one heck of a ride," Hopkins radioed to SpaceX flight controllers from orbit, adding that his crew was all smiles. "Making history is definitely hard and you guys all made it look easy. Congratulations to everyone. Resilience is in orbit."

Going into the launch, the only concern was the weather. Rough seas at the recovery zone prevented the Dragon from getting off the ground on its original launch date of Saturday. Teams decided to delay the flight 24-hours in hopes that the drone ship "Just Read the Instructions" would arrive at the recovery zone in time for the launch. 

The gumdrop-shaped capsule's flight was one for the history books. It marked several firsts, including the first-long duration crew mission to blast off from the space coast as well as the first operational commercial crew mission to launch as part of NASA's Commercial Crew Program. 

With the launch of a different Crew Dragon capsule in May, known as the Demo-2 mission, NASA and SpaceX helped usher in a new era in spaceflight — one led by commercial companies. 

Nearly a decade ago, on July 21, 2011, the Space Shuttle Atlantis touched down for the final time, ending the storied career of NASA's fleet of space shuttles. The winged family of orbiters were NASA's workhorses for decades. First flying in 1981, and continuing service until 2011, the space shuttle helped build the International Space Station, which celebrated its 20th anniversary earlier this month. 

But the shuttle's time was limited, and just before its retirement NASA decided that it wanted to hand over the reigns to private industry and entrusted two companies to ferry their astronauts to and from space. 

NASA selected SpaceX and Boeing as its future space taxi providers. These two companies have worked to build a spacecraft capable of safely carrying crew, under contracts worth a total of $6.8 billion. Once operational, their vehicles — SpaceX's Crew Dragon and Boeing's CST-100 Starliner — will be NASA's primary means of transporting astronauts to space. 

Ever since the final shuttle flight touched down, every astronaut bound for the orbital outpost has hitched a ride on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft. Now, this flight marks the first official operational flight of the Crew Dragon capsule. During the lead up to today's flight, NASA certified the spacecraft to carry astronauts to and from the space station on a regular basis. 

The four astronauts departed from historic launch pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This is the same launch pad that the Apollo 11 astronauts launched to the moon from and also hosted the first and last space shuttles launches. In fact, a total of 82 shuttle launches left the planet from that pad. 

That heritage is also represented in the mission's patch. There are no names or flags on the patch. Instead it has symbols on the lower edge to pay tribute to the four prior U.S. spacecraft that carried astronauts ― Space Shuttle, Apollo, Gemini and Mercury.

Hours before launch. They traveled in style, riding in white Tesla Model X electric cars that were decked out in the old NASA "worm" logo that was revived for the launch. Upon arrival, they took an elevator to the crew access arm, which stands approximately 265 feet (81 meters) above the launch pad, and then climbed into the capsule. 

After a series of system checkouts, the closeout crew detected a potential leak in the spacecraft's hatch. The team spent several minutes to troubleshoot this issue before they cleared the pad. According to the webcast, there could have been a small piece of debris in the hatch's seal, which would have been removed before the crew was sealed inside. They then armed the Crew Dragon's abort system soon after. That system is a crucial component in keeping them safe. SpaceX then began fueling the rocket with supercooled liquid oxygen and kerosene 45 minutes before liftoff.

But before the crew could fly, SpaceX had to prove that its Crew Dragon capsule could keep astronauts safe during flight. One of the lessons learned from the loss of the space shuttle Challenger in 1986 was that all future crewed vehicles would need emergency escape systems, which the shuttle did not have. 

While in-flight anomalies are rare, NASA needed to ensure that, if one of SpaceX's Falcon 9 rockets were to have an anomaly, its astronauts would still be brought home safely. As such, SpaceX demonstrated how the system worked in flight earlier this year. 

Following that successful inflight abort mission, SpaceX launched two astronauts, Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley on a test flight to the ISS. During that flight, the duo put the Dragon spacecraft through its paces and spent about 10 weeks on station before splashing down in the Gulf of Mexico on Aug. 2.

While Behnken and Hurley took about 19 hours to catch up with the space station, Crew-1 will take about 27 hours to catch up with the ISS. During that time, the astronauts will get to move around a bit, get some sleep and even eat some food before arriving at the space station. The vehicle is fully autonomous, so it's designed to fly without any human intervention. However, it has a complete control panel that the astronauts can use if necessary. 

Hopkins is the mission's commander, with Glover serving as the pilot. Walker and Noguchi will be the mission specialists. The duo were added onto the mission's roster approximately seven months ago and did their training during the height of the pandemic. 

"I've been pleasantly surprised with how SpaceX handled the training and everything," Noguchi said during a preflight news briefing. "Hopper is a great leader." 

Hopkins, Walker and Noguchi are all veteran flyers, however, this flight will be Glover's first. 

"It's hard to put into words, it's surreal," Glover said before the flight. "I'm excited just to go to space. We have an amazing spacecraft and are going to join an amazing team."

The Crew-1 astronauts will be joining three people already living and working on the space station. In Oct., NASA astronaut Kate Rubins and two Russian cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Serchkov and Sergey Ryzhikov, blasted off to the orbital outpost and are ready to welcome their new crew members. 

Hopkins explained during a preflight briefing Nov. 9 that the space station might be a little cramped after Crew-1's arrival. Currently, there is a shortage of sleeping pods on the space station. That's because historically ISS crew size has been six, and the arrival of Crew-1 will bring the orbiting lab's population to seven. According to Hopkins, he will sleep in the Dragon until another sleeping pod arrives at the space station, which could arrive mid-mission or after the Crew-1 team returns to Earth. 

There may be a shortage of sleeping pods, but by sending a crew of four astronauts, it will increase the amount of research carried out on the space station. 

To that end, the Dragon capsule is carrying a bevy of research experiments to the station along with the four astronauts. Some of the experiments include a student genetics project, tests for future spacesuits and rock-eating microbes. 

Newbie spaceflyer Victor Glover will be participating in another research experiment that will help understand how spaceflight can change a spaceflyer's immune system. Glover will collect biological samples from his body during the mission which will help researchers examine how dietary changes can affect an astronaut's immune function as well as their own microbiome. The study, called the Food Physiology experiment will be ongoing.

About nine minutes after today's successful liftoff, the Falcon 9's first stage booster touched down on SpaceX's drone ship, "Just Read the Instructions" (JRTI), which was stationed out in the Atlantic Ocean. This marked the company's 65th landing and the 12th for this particular drone ship. 

JRTI is SpaceX newest drone ship, having recently moved to the East Coast earlier this year. Along with its counterpart, "Of Course I Still Love You", the drone ships have helped SpaceX with its reusability efforts. 

SpaceX plans to reuse the booster in today's mission on its next crewed flight, which is scheduled to launch sometime in the spring of 2021. It will carry another crew of four astronauts: NASA's Shane Kimbrough, Megan McArthur, along with French astronaut Thomas Pesquet and Japanese astronaut Akihiko Hoshide. 

Crew-1 is expected to dock with the space station Monday Nov. 16 at 11 p.m. EST (0400 GMT on Nov. 17), and you can watch their arrival live here on Space.com. They will remain parked at the orbital outpost for six months.

China's Yutu 2 rover snaps stunning new panoramas from the moon's far side

Meanwhile, a Chinese language drive diary, published while the two spacecraft hibernated during the very cold, roughly 14-Earth-day-long lunar night, details the Yutu 2 rover's latest activities, completed during the mission's 23rd day. 

Accompanying the drive diary are a host of stunning new photographs, including a panoramic image that shows a large crater amid a desolate landscape and the distant rim of Von Kármán Crater. 

Yutu 2 was not able to approach a rock specimen identified during the previous lunar day as an interesting target. It instead analyzed a rock specimen near the large crater using its spectrometer. The rover has used that instrument to analyze a range of specimens in Von Kármán Crater, notably causing a stir when it discovered an impact-melt breccia initially described in Chinese as "gel-like." 

Other images detail the routes carefully planned by the Yutu 2 drive team as they navigate between numerous craters that could ensnare the rover as it makes its way to the northwest of the Chang'e 4 lander. The team have started using software to produce 3D mapping to help plot the rover's journey.

The China National Space Administration also released a superb high-resolution panorama taken by Yutu 2 while still close to the lander. 

The Chang'e 4 lander and Yutu 2 rover had design lifetimes of one year and three months respectively. However, the pair are still going strong with all science payloads functioning well, according to the administration. So far the spacecraft have survived 23 lunar days and nights on the far side of the moon, or more than 670 Earth days. 

China is planning to launch its next lunar mission, Chang'e 5, later this month. The mission aims to land on the near side of the moon, collect around 4.4 lbs. (2 kilograms) of rocks and regolith samples and deliver them to Earth.

NASA and Space X embark on historic mission to the International Space Station

It's a new era for space flights, with NASA making commercial deals

An international crew of four astronauts (three from the US and one from Japan) is now on their way to the International Space Station (ISS) following a successful launch on a SpaceX rocket.

It’s the first NASA-certified commercial human spacecraft system in history.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket with a Crew Dragon capsule on top of it took off from Kennedy Space Center. The launch happened a day later than planned due to bad weather but at 7:27 p.m. local time on Sunday, November 15, it took off with four astronauts on board: Shannon Walker, Michael Hopkins, Victor Glover, and Soichi Noguchi.

The capsule successfully separated from the second stage of the rocket and, according to a SpaceX team member speaking over the radio, is currently on the correct trajectory to reach the ISS. The crew should dock at their destination on Tuesday, joining two Russians and an American aboard the station.

It is the second manned flight for SpaceX, a private company founded by Tesla’s owner Elon Musk, which will now take NASA astronauts into space after nine years of US dependence on Russian Soyuz rockets. Vice President Mike Pence, who attended the launch, called it “a new era in human space exploration in America.”

SpaceX has signed a $3 billion contract with NASA to develop, test, and fly an astronaut taxi service. The deal also includes six “operational” (or routine) missions, this flight being the first of them. Back in May, the company performed a demonstration in which two astronauts were taken to the station and returned safely to Earth.

NASA has a similar agreement with the Boeing aerospace company, although its service is more than a year behind SpaceX. It’s a new model of contracting out transportation to low-Earth orbit, the agency said, saving money in procurement costs. NASA wants to use this model to fund its Moon and Mars ambitions.

As the rockets and capsules are developed by SpaceX and Boeing, with NASA being the customer, the companies will also use their vehicles to fly tourists, private researchers, or anyone else who can afford a $50 million ticket. This has been seen as controversial but it’s part of the way forward chosen by NASA.

“The big milestone here is that we are now moving away from development and test and into operational flights. And in fact, this operational flight was licensed by the Federal Aviation Administration. So this is a truly a commercial launch,” NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said in a statement.

The crew and their mission

The crew will carry out scientific experiments and maintenance operations during a six-month stay aboard the ISS and will return in spring 2021. It is scheduled to be the longest human space mission ever launched from the US. The spacecraft is capable of staying in orbit for at least 210 days, per NASA requirements.

It’s only last week that SpaceX’s Crew Dragon was officially certified as a spacecraft capable of carrying people. This opens the door for the company to begin making the trip relatively routine, carrying astronauts from a variety of backgrounds. In this mission, for instance, Walker and Noguchi have backgrounds in physics and will oversee a series of experiments.

“In the next 15 months, we should be flying roughly seven Dragon missions. And this mission represents the initiation of a Dragon in orbit continuously – knocking on wood – and certainly is really the beginning of a new era in human spaceflight,” said SpaceX’s Gwynne Shotwell in a statement.

Among their research at the ISS, the crew will assess the effects of microgravity on human health and diseases using specialized organ-on-chip platforms. These ’tissue chips’ have been hailed as an important innovation for this type of study. The astronauts will also test a new system to remove heat from NASA’s next generation spacesuit.

At the end of the mission, the astronauts will once again board the Crew Dragon capsule, which will autonomously undock, depart the space station, and re-enter Earth’s atmosphere. The capsule also will return to Earth with important and time-sensitive research, NASA said in a statement.

On the ship, the aliens told him that their ancestors lived in the land of Mu and that there was another civilization in Atlantis advanced. Atlantean scientists ” learned to handle atomic energy more skillfully than you currently have . ” He also mentioned an arms disaster that was imminent.

Alternative history of Atlanteans vs. Lemurians: nuclear catastrophe

Edgar Cayce , an American medium, received telepathic messages from aliens from Cassiopea. His information says that the Atlanteans lived from ancient times . Earth changes and reboot of civilizations

However, the sinking of that lost continent was due more to a series of natural disasters . The Earth had become unstable as a result of the excessive nuclear explosions of the Atlanteans (because of that, the Earth’s axis shifted and the poles began to shift ).

Many Atlanteans sought refuge in Agartha and others spread throughout the world. Prehistoric structures such as stone circles (Stonehenge), dolmens and geoglyphs are said to be Atlantean work , since they knew the technology of acoustic levitation to lift heavy rocks (in addition, in caves around the world there are symbols of Atlantis: the spirals, the crescent and the serpent ).

Magnetars have been in the news lately with the discovery that a Milky Way magnetar — neutron stars (collapsed super-giants) with unusually powerful magnet fields – is the source of those previously unexplained fast radio bursts. Magnetars themselves are still hypothetical and astronomers have never actually seen one form. That changed recently when scientists studying a brief gamma-ray burst that appeared on May 22 determined that this bright light that was ten times brighter than expected was in reality a kilonova – a collision of two neutron stars – and this explosive merger may have been the birth of a magnetar. A drop-the-mic moment in astronomy?

“The Hubble observations were designed to search for infrared emission that results from the creation of heavy elements—like gold, platinum, and uranium—during a neutron star collision, which gives rise to a short gamma-ray burst. Surprisingly, we found much brighter infrared emission than we ever expected, suggesting that there was additional energy input from a magnetar that was the remnant of the merger.”

In a press release prior to these findings being published in The Astrophysical Journal, ,” said Edo Berger, an astronomer at the Center for Astrophysics (Harvard & Smithsonian) and principal investigator of the Hubble program, describes watching the short gamma ray burst 200522A with the Hubble Space Telescope, Swift Observatory, and multiple ground-based telescopes. This kilonova – called that because it’s 1,000 time bright than the nova from neutron star collisions that form black holes – was too bright to fit the conventional short gamma ray burst scenario, leading Berger and his team to look for another reason for it.

“What is left behind in such a collision: a more massive neutron star? A black hole? The fact that we see this infrared emission, and that it is so bright shows that short gamma-ray bursts indeed form from neutron star collisions, but surprisingly the aftermath of the collision may not be a black hole, but rather likely a magnetar.”

Hubble telescope

Watching the formation of a magnetar is truly big news in astronomy circles, but Wen-fai Fong, an astronomer at Northwestern University in Illinois and lead author on the research, uses it as an opportunity to praise the Hubble telescope.

“Hubble really sealed the deal in the sense that it was the only one to detect infrared light. Amazingly, Hubble was able to take an image only three days after the burst. You need another observation to prove that there is a fading counterpart associated with the merger, as opposed to a static source. When Hubble looked again at 16 days and 55 days, we knew we had not only nabbed the fading source, but that we had also discovered something very unusual. Hubble’s spectacular resolution was also key in disentangling the host galaxy from the position of the burst and to quantify the amount of light coming from the merger.”

Hubble gets the prize while the rest of the telescopes get participation trophies. And the announcement has one more benefit – add The Kilonovas to Magnetar as two more cool names for bands.

The UFO field is peppered with the accounts of those who have supposedly come face to face with these alien forces from beyond our world and indeed our very comprehension. These mysterious individuals are known as “contactees” within the field, and there is no shortage of those who would claim to have experienced the UFO phenomenon up close and first hand. Some of these people have managed to go on to become quite well known for their claims and exploits, and surely one of the more well-known and indeed more outlandish accounts comes from a contactee who had a mysterious encounter out in the desert of New Mexico and would weave this into a cultish organization and into the very fabric of contactee lore.

Daniel Fry started his strange odyssey back in the 1940s, when he was based at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico, involved in rocket research at what was then known as the White Sands Proving Ground, which is a military testing area operated by the United States Army. In the days during and after World War II, rocketry and missile technology was being hotly pursued, and Fry, who had a background as an explosives supervisor in the 1930s and 1940s, was mostly involved with setting up instrumentation to test rockets at the range for the company Aerojet General. On July 4, 1949, personnel at the base were gearing up for Fourth of July celebrations at nearby Las Cruces, but for reasons that aren’t clearly understood he missed the bus and was left behind at the base. Fry then decided to go out and explore the area, going down a desert path he had never been down before, and from here he would allegedly have a bizarre experience that would change the course of his life.

As Fry walked along that dusty trail, he noticed in the sky what he would describe as a “strangely behaving star” that seemed to be approaching and getting closer. As it seemed to come in for a landing not far away it was very obvious that this was no star, but rather some sort of craft, described as an “oblate spheroid” measuring 10feet in diameter and about 16 feet high. He would say of what was going through his mind during the outlandish situation:

What should I do next? Should I return to the base and report the advent of the craft? This, at first, seemed the logical thing to do, but then another thought intervened. It would take at least three quarters of an hour for me to get back to the base, find someone in authority, and return with other observers. What if the craft took off in the meantime? There would be nothing but a crumpled patch of brush to substantiate my story. Who would believe me? If anyone did believe, who would dare to admit it? I had read enough of the ridicule heaped upon those who had been incautious enough to admit having seen some unexplained objects flying in the air. How much worse would be the lot of one who claimed to have seen one land and to have been close enough to touch it, yet had no proof except a flattened patch of brush!

As he stood there in awed shock wondering what to do, he says that he was contacted telepathically by an entity calling itself “Alan,” who invited him to approach and come aboard. When Fry entered the craft, he would claim that the entire floor became transparent, as if he were standing on a pane of glass, and “Alan,” who seemed to be invisible and would not reveal itself, explained some of the technical aspects of the ship and how it worked, as it began to rise and travel at vast speeds of an estimated 8,000 miles per hour. Fry would say that the ship shot out over the landscape to reach New York, after which it would fly back to New Mexico, a round trip which took an estimated 30 minutes, all as Alan explained the finer points of physics and the prehistory of Earth. At no point did Fry actually ever see Alan, and he was told that the ship was in fact remotely controlled by the being from a larger mother ship.

Fry was dropped back off where he had started, but this would not be his last encounter with the mysterious “Alan.” He would claim to be contacted several more times between the years of 1950 and 1954, and during these meetings he learned more about Alan’s people and their purpose on Earth. According to Alan, they were descendants of the original race of the lost continent of Lemuria, which the entity claimed had actually been destroyed in an ancient nuclear war and which had left them homeless and adrift. Luckily, they had mastered space travel, and so a handful of them were able to escape aboard their ships, flying out to Mars to start over. There on the Red Planet they would rebuild their society and use it as a launching pad to other star systems and planets, fashioning a sort of empire across the stars that it called “Galactic Confederation,” and according to Alan they had even mastered space and time itself.  Alan gave vague messages about how they were there to help humanity, to save us from destroying ourselves, and that they should not be afraid of their presence on Earth. Fry claimed that Alan told him:

The political tensions which now exist between your nations must be eased. If either of the two dominant nations of earth were to achieve conclusive scientific superiority over the other, under present conditions, a war of extermination would be certain to follow. We are not here to assist any nation in making war but to stimulate a degree of progress which will eliminate the reasons for war on Earth, even as we, some thousands of years ago eliminated the reasons for conflict among our own people.

Fry would write a book about the whole wild story called The White Sands Incident in 1954, and would go on to create a sort of quasi-religious organization called “Understanding Inc.” in El Monte, California in 1955, based on what he had learned from the aliens, its mission statement being “’bringing about a greater degree of understanding among all the peoples of the earth and preparing them for their eventual inevitable meetings with other races in space.” For a time, the group spread rapidly, with newsletters and numerous lectures and seminars, and they even had a sprawling compound near Tonopah, Arizona. There was a lot of talk at the time that it was a freaky UFO cult, but Fry would always deny this, saying:

The group is not mystic, and is not a flying saucer watching organization although some members hold definite beliefs and interests in both areas. Understanding Inc. which is a non-profit, tax exempt corporation, works on the principles that there is nothing that members are required to believe or accept or do.

Fry became very involved with the alien contactee scene at the time, travelling around the country to attend various UFO events, and would write several other books, including Atoms, Galaxies and Understanding, To Men of Earth, Steps to the Stars, Curve of Development, Can God Fill Teeth? and Verse and Worse. However, Universal Inc. would start to dwindle in the mid-1970s, and by 1979 they were in steep decline and disappeared. In the years since, there has been much skepticism aimed at both him and his supposed UFO encounters, with a few damning strikes against him. For one, he famously failed a lie detector test about his experiences on national television, and although that is not a completely reliable condemnation, other points are. For instance, photos that he took of the supposed craft were analyzed and found to have likely been faked, and his claimed educational credentials as a “doctor” turned out to be a doctorate in “cosmism” issued by a mail-order organization called “St. Andrews College” in London, England, from which it seems pretty much anyone can buy a degree for a price. Another odd detail is that some of his story changed over time, such as the date of his first incident being moved from 1949 to 1950, and just about the only thing we can be sure of is that Fry did indeed work at White Sands as an engineer in some capacity.

We are left to wonder, as we are in a great many supposed UFO contactee situations, just how much of the story is true, and how much has been fabricated or twisted and warped over time. Is Daniel Fry for real, or is this just delusions and a hoaxer trying to get fame off of his books and movement? What really happened out there in the wilds of White Sands? There will probably never be any concrete answer, but whatever you believe, Daniel Fry and his mysterious experiences have managed to remain entrenched in UFO lore, among the many stories from people like him.

Over the past few days I’ve highlighted how a number of significant figures in the UFO field (and related fields) have changed their views on the nature of the phenomenon. You may be surprised by the sheer number of people whose beliefs have changed over the years. While I won’t bombard you with dozens of cases, I will share with you the fascinating stories of two people as perfect, and very intriguing, examples. Today’s article is focused on a good friend of mine, Matthew Williams. He’s a key figure in the Crop Circle phenomenon. Matt got involved in the subject in the early 1990s – and in doing he so his views on the subject began to alter massively. Matt told me: “In 1992, when I got involved in Crop Circle research, there were a lot of people who believed that Crop Circles could only be made by otherworldly forces. Admittedly, I didn’t know very much about Crop Circles back then; and hearing some of the arguments of ‘bent nodes’ and ‘blown expulsion cavities’ coupled with UFO sightings, made the whole subject seem extraordinary. Without researching the subject for myself, I was inclined to believe the so-called experts and their seemingly plausible theories about aliens making Crop Circles.” A change was soon coming, though, for Matt. He explains:

““Many researchers I knew believed that the Crop Circles were alien in origin and felt there was nothing to be gained in trying to police human Circle-makers, as, in the opinion of the researchers, there were very few Crop Circles created by people anyway; and the researchers I knew were sure that they could tell the difference between a man-made Crop Circle and an alien-made Crop Circle. It wasn’t until about 1994 that I decided to seek out the human Crop Circle makers. What subsequently happened could be termed the ‘other side’ of the story. By this time, I had a good idea that many Crop Circles were made by humans; but was unsure if there was a level of disinformation being spread. It was then I met [Crop Circle researcher, maker, and personality] Rob Irving and heard his immortal quote, which I still use to illustrate the simplicity of the Crop Circle argument: ‘You’ll never be sure until you actually make one.’ What I learned next was totally unexpected, as the Crop Circle makers I spoke to did not debunk the theories that paranormal events take place in Crop Circles, even if they are man-made. Indeed, there was much talk of strange lights and events happening to the Crop Circle makers while they made Crop Circles at night.”

It was at this point that Matt’s views began to change to a very significant degree: “I was given countless tales of UFO activity and even strange synchronicities which took place in the man-made Crop Circles, and which made the Crop Circle makers wonder if they were being influenced by a higher, guiding hand – perhaps at the design stage, or out in the field. I believe that the human Crop Circle makers may be guided by a connection to a higher intelligence, a gestalt or group mind; and the symbols that are put down are deep-routed subconscious expressions. This would explain why some telepaths or psychics claim to have seen Crop Circle designs before they appear – because we are all dialed into the same group-mind ‘internet.’

“The synchronistic events which happen each year in the unfolding designs that the Crop Circle makers come out with are often remarked as being too much of a coincidence. Crop Circle designs have been repeated in different parts of the country by teams who didn’t share designs beforehand. There have even been teams who have gone out on the same night to the same field, made designs, not knowing the other team was present, and their designs have had similarities. The chances of this happening, without planning, are slim; so it would appear that something paranormal is working for the Crop Circle makers. Why do Crop Circles have power? I know that crop is a living medium. Unlike any other type of canvas that an artist may use, crop has a life-force energy which, when used on such a large scale, makes crops blend natural Earth-energy magic with human-energy magic. What Crop Circle-makers may have rediscovered is the ancient art of natural magic – working with large emblems as part of the energy system of the Earth. Take sacred sites such as stone-circles: these were erected as temples for people to visit, perhaps as part of a sacred quest seeking answers. Today, Crop Circles fill a similar role, attracting people who ask questions and putting visitors closer to paranormal sources.”

There’s no doubt that Matt made an amazing, and very thought-provoking, change in his beliefs concerning Crop Circles. In doing so he went down a path that is almost certainly the correct one. Forget nuts-and-bolts UFOs and black-eyed aliens. Crop Circles are much stranger – and life-changing, too.
