Het is een lief, aanhankelijk hondje, dat zich op een week snel aan ons heeft aangepast. Ze is heel vinnig en nieuwsgierig, een heel ander hondje dan Noleke.

You’d Better Steer Clear of these 12 Vile Vortices!
There are places in this world where things just don’t seem to follow the rules of physics, places where strange energies are and have always been present. They are marked by unusual phenomena, unexplained disappearances and instilling violent behavior in humans and animals alike. They are called Vile Vortices, and you’ll be better off if you simply avoid them.
Even if you haven’t heard the term vile vortex, you surely know about the most infamous of them: the Bermuda Triangle. This enigmatic place is but one of the dozen enigmatic places plotted by biologist and writer Ivan T. Sanderson, founder of the Society for the Investigation of the Unexplained and one of Charles Fort’s earliest followers.
In 1972, Sanderson wrote a piece for Saga magazine entitled The Twelve Devil’s Graveyards Around the World in which he plotted the global disappearance of planes and ships, underlining 12 areas that stood out in particular. Although not all are equally famous, each vile vortex is characterized by magnetic anomalies and abnormal occurrences. Roughly resembling lozenges, these sites are believed to be rifts where space-time folds in upon itself and everyday physics no longer applies.
Ten of Sanderson’s vortices can be found in tropical climates; five along the Tropic of Cancer and five along the Tropic of Capricorn, with the other two being located at the Earth’s North and South Poles. The twelve points are equidistant and together, they form the twelve tips of an icosahedron (think of a 20-sided dice).
The Vile Vortices:
Karachi (Pakistan), home to Mohenjo-daro, one of the world’s earliest major cities and supposedly, ground zero for the detonation of ancient nuclear weapons;
Hamakulia, east of Hawaii and believed to have once been a high-energy volcano, hence the anomaly;
Bermuda Triangle
Algerian Megalithic Ruins, located south of the Malian city of Timbuktu
Devil’s Sea, south of Tokyo – Confirming age-old legends, ships and planes routinely disappear here;
Zimbabwe Megaliths, massive stone structures that required a high level of masonry expertise. Some say this vortex is connected to the mysterious plane disappearances over the Sahara desert.
Easter Island
South AtlanticAnomaly, an area where the innermost Van Allen radiation belt dips very close to the Earth’s surface;
New Hebrides Trench, between the islands of Vanuatu and New Caledonia. Its depest point reaches a depth of over 25,000 feet (7,600 meters);
Wharton Basin, another deep sea region that has seen little exploration;
The North and South Poles
While Sanderson himself banked on the fact that the mysterious disappearances might have been caused by hot and cold air along with sea currents, his idea was quickly picked up and further developed by other believers in the preternatural.
In 1973, Soviet scientists Nikolai Goncharov, Vyacheslav Morochov, and Valery Makarov published an article called “Is the Earth a Large Crystal?” in which they forwarded the idea that strange energies operate in certain points on our planet. They wrote that the Earth’s cosmic energy matrix was divided into twelve pentagonal plates, and at the intersection of any three plates, surges in said energy were responsible for the appearance of unusual life forms, as well as enigmatic ancient civilizations. The scientists also posited that our planet is actually a gigantic crystal that resonates at 7 Hz with harmonic focal points at specific equidistant points.
Other writers argue that the vortices are connected to subtle matter energy and ley lines. In Mapping the World grid, author David Hatcher Childress wrote that “we are speaking about an intelligent geometric pattern into which, theoretically, the Earth and its energies are organized—and possibly in which the ubiquitous megalithic sites are also positioned.”
Naturally, theories related to the vile vortices have been met with a great deal of skepticism. Some of the reported disappearances were found to have mundane causes such as underwater eruptions or instruments failing (I wonder why?) but the fact of the matter remains that, throughout the world, there are strange places, forming a pattern. The implications are up to you to decide.

Op woensdag is een opvallende kubus bij de zon gespot. Het object, dat is vastgelegd door twee verschillende camera’s, lijkt een stuk groter te zijn dan de aarde, schrijft de Britse Daily Star.
Het object is vastgelegd met de camera’s EIT 195 en EIT 171 aan boord van het zonneobservatorium SOHO van de Amerikaanse ruimtevaartorganisatie NASA.
UFO-jagers stuitten op de mysterieuze kubus en plaatsten de beelden op het internet, waarna complottheoretici suggereerden dat het een ongeïdentificeerd vliegend object is dat rond de zon draait.
Verbergen
Het is volgens de krant niet de eerste keer dat zo’n vierkant bij de zon tot controverse heeft geleid. Op 28 juni 2011 werd ook al een kubus ontdekt op foto’s die met ruimtesonde SOHO van de zon waren gemaakt.
Volgens Scott C. Waring van UFO Sightings Daily zijn de foto’s bewijs dat de kubus niet is veroorzaakt door pixellatie. “Dit is bewijs dat de kubus echt bestaat en dat het een groot blokvormig object is dat groter is dan de aarde,” zei hij. “De kubus bevindt zich op beide foto’s op dezelfde plaats.”
Velen claimen nu dat de NASA de zwarte vierkanten gebruikt om UFO’s te verbergen voor het gewone publiek. Op foto’s die op de website van SOHO zijn te downloaden is echter geen spoor van de kubus meer te bekennen. Sceptici beschuldigen de UFO-jagers van bangmakerij.
ISS
Afgelopen maand werd de NASA nog gedwongen te reageren op een vreemd object dat werd gespot bij het ISS. Op beelden was te zien hoe een witte lichtbol langzaam afdaalde naar de aardatmosfeer, waarna de livestream plotseling werd stopgezet.
Woordvoerder van de NASA Tabatha Thompson ontkende dat het ruimteagentschap met opzet de livestream stopzet als er ongeïdentificeerde objecten in beeld komen.

Augustus is elk jaar een waar meteorenfestijn. In deze periode kunnen we genieten van de Perseïden-meteorenzwerm. Dankzij Jupiter zijn er dit jaar extra veel vallende sterren te zien.
De Perseïden vormen een wolk van stofdeeltjes die is achtergelaten door de komeet Swift-Tuttle. Die was hier voor het laatst in 1992 en komt in 2126 pas weer terug. In de jaren negentig was men bang dat de komeet in botsing zou komen met de aarde.
Compacter
Het maximum bereiken we vannacht rond 03.00 uur: dan zijn er onder ideale omstandigheden tot wel 200 (!) vallende sterren per uur te zien. De meteoren zijn helder en snel en hebben nalichtende sporen.
Jupiter doet er 12 jaar over om rond de zon te draaien en doorkruist zo dus maar eens in de 12 jaar de meteorenzwerm. Door de zwaartekracht van de planeet is de meteorenzwerm dit jaar compacter en komen er dus meer meteoren in de baan van de aarde terecht. In 2004, toen Jupiter ook voor extra meteoren zorgde, was er een extra piek ruim 16 uur voor het reguliere maximum.
Lichtspoor
Om de meteoren waar te kunnen nemen heb je geen telescoop of verrekijker nodig. Het volstaat om met het blote oog naar een willekeurige plaats aan de nachtelijke hemel te kijken. Ondanks de naam hebben vallende sterren eigenlijk niet echt iets met sterren te maken. Het zijn eerder stofdeeltjes die door de verbranding in de atmosfeer een lichtspoor achterlaten.
Het Jet Propulsion Laboratory van de NASA voorspelt dat rond het maximum tot wel 200 meteoren per uur zijn te zien. De meteoren komen met een snelheid van bijna 60 kilometer per seconde in botsing met de dampkring van deaarde.

A Texas witness at Keltys recounted a 1969 UFO encounter with a low flying sphere-shaped object, according to testimony in Case 78077 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.
The witness and a friend were “spot lighting racoons” off 103W between Lufkin and Crockett alongside a river at 1 a.m. on July 20, 1969, when the incident occurred.

“We were staying the night at his grandparent’s house,” the witness stated.“We were in a large field, maybe 20+ acres, surrounded by old growth woods and with small pines in the center. We were driving my friend’s truck inside the perimeter fence. I was shining the light out the passenger window in the truck, up and down trees trying to see raccoon’s eyes, when my friend said, ‘turn off that light.’”
The driver saw something odd in the nearby woods.
“Up ahead at ground levelthe woods were lit up, and we suggested that maybe his cousins were coming in the Jeep, although it was not moving, to hunt with us.”
The two watched the light.
“While we sat and watched, the light rose up fairly quickly to above the treetops, and it appeared to be the moon – only huge. It was very scary and my friend turned the truck around and drove with the intention of leaving. When we got to the other side, headed toward the entry gate to the field, I told him to stop and asked, ‘where did it go,’ as it was no longer in sight.”
But they quickly found the light again.
“While we sat there looking out the front windshield into a cloudless sky, it reappeared just like a falling star that did not burn out, but fired directly at us, immediately growing huge once again.”

The event caused the witness to go for his gun.
“It startled us so much, that I began to raise the shotgun at my side. My friend slapped it back down and said, ‘No, don’t shoot it,’ and attempted to back up, but he popped the clutch too fast and the truck died. He restarted it and took off backwards.”
But the witness wanted to see the object again.
“As we were backing toward the river, I told him to stop. The object did not move again, and in every way appeared as the moon, although very huge and bright. If anyone saw it at this point, they would only have said, ‘Wow, look how big and bright the moon is.’ We sat only for a minute or two, and then he drove off toward the entrance. When we went through the gate and started into the woods, I looked back through the rear window and it was still not moving. But, as I realized only later, that it could not have been all that high, because we actually passed under it.”
The witness has never forgotten the events of that evening.
“My friend and I have discussed this event over and over throughout the years, and I have given it much thought. I have no idea what we saw, but it certainly was not the moon. I believe that it could even be human descendants of a culture with new and different technologies and abilities to create magician-like optical illusions to be able to hide in plain sight. Maybe illusions like those bomb worshipers in Planet of the Apes. I only know that we both saw the same thing and discussed it as it happened, and it most definitely was unexplainable.”

A Pennsylvania witness at Bristol reported watching and videotaping a series of star-like objects slow moving in a straight line across the sky, according to testimony in Case 78125 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The witness stepped out a back door to a vehicle at 9 p.m. on July 31, 2016, when a low flying airplane was first noticed.
“I looked north and noticed five objects—I don’t want to say hovering, but flying straight; not maneuvering, but also moving away from each other,” the witness stated. “They were going at a slow pace underneath the clouds.”

The witness also noticed planes in the sky.
“Planes were flying around them and across from them. There were a lot of planes in the sky at that time—it seemed abnormal to me. Other than that, they were going real slow, but they didn’t look like airplanes.”
The brightness of the objects first triggered the witness to notice them.
“I first noticed the object because of how bright they were and how close they were at the beginning. It looked like several stars (a constellation in the sky but it wasn’t that high) when I first noticed it.”

The witness had a feeling to look at the objects.
“I felt like I always feel, when I felt a feeling like ‘look here,’ instead of looking the direction I normally look because whatever there was there. Like a feeling of ‘look before it’s too late.’ It’s weird, I don’t know. Followed them for about five minutes before it looked like they disappeared from view based on the cloud cover.”

Als mensen wat meer naar boven zouden kijken, dan zouden ze soms de meest fantastische dingen kunnen zien.
Natuurlijk worden er veel UFO’s en dergelijke waargenomen boven landen zoals Mexico, maar ook de lage landen worden regelmatig bezocht door buitenaardsen.
De laatste jaren is er een verschijnsel waar wij uitgebreid over hebben geschreven en dat zijn wolken die geen wolken zijn, maar vermomde moederschepen of dimensieportalen naar andere dimensies of beide.
Prachtige opnames daarvan in bijvoorbeeld Mexico, maar ook getuigenverklaringen uit eigen land, waarover later meer.
Nu doet zich een vergelijkbaar verschijnsel voor ergens boven België. De exacte locatie is onduidelijk, maar wat te zien is, is zonder meer indrukwekkend.
We zien weer, zoals meestal in dit soort situaties, een wolk die eigenlijk niet thuis hoort in de lucht zoals de er op dat moment uit ziet.
Aan de randen van de wolk, verschijnen ronde UFO’s, die als het ware de basis verlaten en op verkenning gaan.
Aan de bovenkant van de UFO/wolk verschijnt een soort gloeiende staaf, een beetje vergelijkbaar met een periscoop van een onderzeeër.
Wat het ook moge zijn, duidelijk is dat het hier geen normale wolk betreft en dat er UFO’s zichtbaar zijn.
Bovenstaande beelden gecombineerd met de getuigenis van een dame uit Friesland uit oktober 2014 geven een verbluffende gelijkenis:
Lees het verhaal van onze lezeres (dank!), een nuchtere Friese dame, die 's avonds op haar fiets stapt. >>"Het is dinsdagavond 7 oktober en om 20.30 stap ik op de fiets vanuit Lytse Geast,(een dorpje een kleine tien kilometer ten zuid-oosten van Leeuwarden).
Mijn weg voert door de weilanden over een afgelegen pad en als het even kan zorg ik er voor dat ik niet in mijn eentje in het donker nog op pad ben. Vandaag ben ik al te laat en de laatste schemering gaat al over in duister.
Ik ben nog maar net buiten, of het begint te regenen en hard te waaien. Schuin voor me zie ik een paar flitsen, en het rommelt in de verte, precies tussen mij en Leeuwarden, waar ik naar op weg ben. Onweer dus, ook dat nog.
Voor me is een brede, langgerekte, vrij laag hangende wolk. Dat is waar ik de hemel op zie lichten. Er komen witte bollen uit de wolk. Twee gaan naar links en twee gaan naar rechts. De afstand van de ene bol tot de andere blijft steeds gelijk, alsof ze met een touwtje aan elkaar vast zitten. Ze bewegen langzaam.
Ik weet niet, wat het is, dat ik zie... zijn dit vliegtuigen? van de basis? En waarom zijn die geïnteresseerd in een onweerswolk? Ja, het zijn vast vliegtuigen. Het licht pulseert ook, zoals bij een vliegtuig. Flits aan, flits uit. Ja maar, bij een vliegtuig zie je dan altijd ook een rood licht aan en uit flitsen. dat is hier niet. Alleen wit. Melkwit.
De twee bollen rechts zijn verdwenen, die van links zijn opeens weer terug boven de wolk. Verbeeld ik me nu dat ze sneller pulseren dan zo net? Nee, dat verbeeld ik me niet. Het lijken wel sterren en het licht is niet meer zozeer wit, als wel koud. Zoals bij sterretjes voor kleine kinderen. Het zijn nu dus geen witte bollen meer, maar steeds sneller aan- en uit flitsende 'sterren'.
Dan zijn ze weg. Een paar minuten is er niks meer te zien en dan opeens zijn er wel twintig. Allemaal onder, boven, naast of uit de wolk. En allemaal flitsen ze aan en uit, nu in een heel hoog tempo. In een ijzig wit licht dat zo fel is dat het mij verblindt. Je zou zeggen dat ze er plezier aan beleven, zoals ze om en door de wolk heen duiken. Er in, er uit, om de wolk heen, achter elkaar aan... Net zo plotseling als ze verschenen zijn ze nu weer weg.
En komen niet meer terug. En ik ben bijna bij de eerste huizen van de stad. Het regent niet meer en de wind gaat ook liggen. Hoe lang dit al met al geduurd heeft? Twintig minuten à hooguit een half uur. Ik kan me niet voorstellen, dat er niet meer mensen geweest zijn die dit gezien hebben. Er was echt een hele lichtshow in de lucht.
Wat me achteraf ook nog wel frappeert, is dat er eigenlijk alleen die ene enorm grote wolk was, verder was er vrijwel geen bewolking.

This week a statue of Jesus at a church in Coahuila, Mexico did something that should be impossible...it opened its eyes. This video is very remarkable and I couldn't see any obvious glitches or evidence of it being a computer generated fake. A UFO researcher Dr. Frank Stranges (Book, Stranger In The Pentagon) who was a priest who met the US president back in the 1960s, said that he talked to Val Valiant Thor from Venus and Val told him Jesus was not only real, but a close personal friend of his on Venus. So, Jesus is mixed in with our alien beliefs. Although this Jesus statue could have been made to open its eyes on purpose once a day or every few days, I cannot be sure, because the detail of the video around the eyes is not very clear. It looks like Bakersfield is of interest to an alien species out there. What convinced me that this sighting is 100% real, was the fact that at 1:29 into the video you see a flash, but its not a flash, but is actually two more glowing orbs signaling the lower orb. One makes itself visible, so the others can remain at a safer location not noticed by humans. Makes it safer if shot at by a deer rifle, or some military jets try to attack. Bakersfield is located in the desert and many species of aliens prefer this climate to build their bases below the ground, less rain underground. (i.e. Friendship Case, Rocca Pia). News States: Several neighbors living off Alderpointe Street near Panama and Gosford in southwest Bakersfield say they first witnessed a mysterious blue light in the sky back in February, and again in March. Both times they saw it on the 14th. "I was taking the recycling out to the trash can, and I saw this blue light in the sky, and I thought, that's kinda bright to be a star, I've never seen a blue star be that bright," said Kelly Castruita. "Watched it for about 10 minutes, just doing weird stuff, it would turn on and off and it would disappear," added Kelly's husband Jeff. Neighbors said the blue light was about the size of a dime, and started off just above the skyline, and then migrated northwest. "It pretty much flew, stopped, then started doing some upward motion and downward motion, so I've never seen anything like it," said neighbor Randy Gabriel. "We'll see the police helicopters once in a while, or an airplane go by, but nothing like this," said Ricardo Pantoja, who has been living in the neighborhood for 23 years. 23ABC's Lindsey Adams took the videos to Senior Deputy Victor Keesey with the Kern County Sheriff's Department, whose office works closely in conjunction with neighboring Meadows Field Airport. "I'm not aware of any calls that we've received regarding any blue lights, or strange lights in that area. Very seldom, if ever, have I seen anything like it. However, we are in the age of drones now, obviously we have military drones, but we have civilian drones now and drones for purchase, so that is a possibility," said Senior Deputy Victor Keesey. "It looked way too high up in the sky to be a drone," mentioned witness Kelly Castruita. I was searching for UFO news and accidentally discovered a UFO behind a MUFON expert doing an interview in Michigan. The UFO is a round orb and holds its position over a small hill on the upper right side of the screen. I enlarged it and you can clearly see that its a round UFO orb, similar to the three UFO orbs that were on CNN during the Shuttle Atlantis landing delay years ago.
This actually happens a lot. An expert is looking one way, and a UFO shows up behind them. Its happened to me when I had a camera on a tripod on an 8th floor roof, and suddenly saw it 3 meters from me, and during the 2 seconds it took me to flip the camera around, it shot 40 meters away (baseball size, translucent). So, I feel for the guy in the interview, and its a bit funny the News casters never even noticed it or anyone else in the city that watched the news cast on TV. One thing I believe is that alien evidence is all around us, but often we are too focused on ourselves to notice it. The truth is within our grasp.

UFO hunters spend their time investigating to figure out the correct answer.
In our state, more than 300 strange sightings were reported to the Michigan Mutual UFO Network. The director, Bill Konkolesky, says hunters can identify about 80% of them, but the remaining 20% falls into the "unknown" category.
“Some stuff could be experimental aircraft, other stuff seems like it must’ve come from somewhere else. Where it would’ve come from, we don’t know,” says Konkolesky. “I think there’s something going on here that’s a lot bigger than just us here on Earth. I’d love to wake up one day and have all the answers, but we’re not quite there yet.”

NASA announcement that it is shutting down the live video feed of the International Space Station (ISS) forever has caused an uproar in the UFO and alien community. Many UFO researchers think that the decision is the last ditch effort to cover-up UFO evidence.
NASA published the announcement on its website on July 29 saying that NASA Television’s Space Station Live program will be phased out and discontinued in August and on September 1 respectively.
Some enthusiasts think that the move to shutting down the live stream would allow NASA to edit things rather than just take them out. They further noted that the people own those cams and that NASA has no right to deprive the public of knowing the truth out there.
An enthusiast commented that space agency tried the same thing before, but forced to put the live feed back online because the public had opposed the decision.
However, some believe that there was never a live feed and NASA just make it appear a live stream using CGI.
There are multiple reports of UFO sightings in the ISS live feed. In July, alien researchers claimed to have discovered a video recording featuring an astronaut who seems to mention the code word for aliens (gospel). Some viewers of the video think the astronaut is talking about an exopolitical meeting between astronauts and aliens.
Alien hunters also accused NASA of interrupting live transmissions each time UFOs appear on the video screen. Shutting down the live stream permanently, according to some UFO hunters, would save the space agency from the trouble of having to close down the live stream when a UFO appears.

We videoed this from our flat in ponders end, Enfield, London, UK. At first glance you might think this object was a star if you didn’t know what your looking for, but it’s not, which I could see when I videoed with my tablet and was able to zoom in fully then I noticed what it is. I was taking pics of it before from my mobile zooming then screen shooting then zooming again to see it up close. I showed people and some of them trying to tell me maybe its a helicopter, I told them I never seen a helicopter dismantle itself and reattach itself in mid air before have you? But a lot of people are more stunned at what we have filmed.

Pieces of natural space debris — typically rocky shards of comets or asteroids — occasionally survive their journeys through Earth's atmosphere and strike the ground, but how often does an event like this actually occur?
While large impacts are fairly rare, thousands of tiny pieces of space rock, called meteorites, hit the ground each year. However, the majority of these events are unpredictable and go unnoticed, as they land in vast swathes of uninhabited forest or in the open waters of the ocean, Bill Cooke and Althea Moorhead of NASA's Meteoroid Environments Office told Space.com.
In order to understand meteorite impacts on Earth, it is important to know where the chunks of rock come from. Meteoroids are rocky remnants of a comet or asteroid that travel in outer space, but when these objects enter Earth's atmosphere, they are considered meteors. Most (between 90 and 95 percent) of these meteors completely burn up in the atmosphere, resulting in a bright streak that can be seen across the night sky, Moorhead said. However, when meteors survive their high-speed plunge toward Earth and drop to the ground, they are called meteorites.
The Perseid meteor shower — one of the most popular meteor showers of the year — is expected to put on a particularly breathtaking show Aug. 11 and 12, when the Earth passes through the trail of debris created by Comet Swift-Tuttle. However, viewers should not expect to find any meteorites lying on the ground after this spectacular meteor shower.
"Perseids come from Comet Swift-Tuttle and are very fragile, being an ice-dust mix," Cooke said. "They are not strong enough to survive passage through the atmosphere at 132,000 mph (212,433 km/h) and so never produce meteorites — they are totally vaporized by the time they make it to 50 miles (80 km) altitude." Unpredictable catastrophes
Most meteorites that are found on the ground weigh less than a pound. While it may seem like these tiny pieces of rock wouldn't do much damage, a 1-lb. (0.45 kilograms) meteorite traveling upward of 200 mph (322 km/h) can fall through the roof of a house or shatter a car windshield.
When the Grimsby meteorite landed in Ontario, Canada in 2009, for example, it broke the windshield of an SUV. In another incident, meteorites crashed into the back end of a Chevy Malibu in Peekskill, New York, in 1992, Cooke and Moorhead said. Thankfully, no one was injured during these events.
However, the pieces of rock falling from the sky are not even the greatest concern regarding meteor impacts, Cooke said.
"What causes the most damage is the shock wave produced by the meteor when it breaks apart in [Earth's] atmosphere," Cooke said. "So, you don't have to watch for the falling rocks — you have to worry about the shockwave."
For example, the Chelyabinsk meteor — an asteroid the size of a six-story building that entered Earth's atmosphere in February 2013 over Russia — broke apart 15 miles (24 km) above the ground and generated a shock wave equivalent to a 500-kiloton explosion, Cooke said. It injured 1,600 people.
This is a sample of a meteorite that was found following the Chelyabinsk event in Russia in 2013. Several small stones were found in the area after the massive impact.

Another major collision was the Tunguska meteorite, which was larger than Chelyabinsk and 10 times more energetic. The meteorite exploded over the Tunguska River on June 30, 1908, and flattened 500,000 acres (2,000 square km) of uninhabited forest. Because of its remote location, the event is an example of a meteorite that would have gone undetected had it not been so large, Cooke and Moorhead explained.
Generally, astronomers are unable to predict meteorite impacts, largely because meteoroids traveling in outer space are too small to detect. However, even large meteorite events that originate from asteroids, which can be tracked in space, are unpredictable.
Fortunately, between 90 and 95 percent of meteors don't survive the fall through the Earth's atmosphere to produce meteorites, Moorhead explained. This is because most meteorites are believed to come from comets, which are more fragile than asteroids.
"Only those meteoroids that happen to be made of stronger material produce meteorites," she said. For example, "if the [meteoroid] is a chunk of an asteroid, instead of a chunk of a comet, it's likely to be a little denser, a little stronger and more likely to produce a meteorite."
Also, if the meteor is approaching Earth at a slower speed, the rock will likely survive its collision with Earth's atmosphere, Moorhead added. In other words, the meteor will not burn up completely, and some remnant meteorites will fall to the ground.
"We actually get a few meteorites from the moon and Mars," Moorhead said. "These [meteorites] are actually chucks of the moon and Mars that have been blown off those planets by impacts and then spent a long time in space before finally hitting Earth as a meteorite."

Although predicting these events is nearly impossible, there are a couple different ways in which researchers can measure how many meteorites fall to the Earth. For example, in uninhabited areas like the Sahara Desert or atop glaciers in Antarctica, it is fairly easy to find meteorites on the ground and date them based on the amount of weathering they've experienced, Moorhead explained. Because these areas are largely undisturbed, the meteorites that lie there provide scientists with a general idea of how many of the space rocks might have hit the Earth over a period of time.
While skywatchers will not be able to hunt for meteorites after this week's Perseids meteor shower, the dazzling trail left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle will provide spectacular light show, which can best be seen in clear skies of the Northern Hemisphere on the nights of Aug. 11 and 12.

The spectacular Perseid meteor shower, peaking Thursday night (Aug. 11–12), lights up Earth's sky every summer as Earth passes through the trail left by Comet Swift-Tuttle, a miles-wide behemoth that swings by Earth every 133 years.
Swift-Tuttle, whose nucleus is 16 miles (26 kilometers) wide, is the largest solar system object to pass close to Earth repeatedly, NASA has said, and researchers once thought it was likely to hit Earth in 2126 — but the last time it passed Earth, in 1992, astronomers took more precise measurements and calculated that its next pass wouldn't be so dangerous after all.
"Its orbit passes very close to the Earth's orbit, so that it has been viewed as a hazardous object over the years," Paul Chodas, NASA's manager for the center of near-Earth object studies, told Space.com. "Now, we know its orbit very well, well enough to say that we are safe from an impact for many thousands of years." [Perseid Meteor Shower 2016: When & How to See It]

"That was a fun comet to observe," Scotti told Space.com. "It's hard to believe it was that long ago now."

Scotti tracked the comet over the course of nearly a week with the telescope. "It was relatively bright so it was fairly easy to observe."
Like all comets, sometimes called "dirty snowballs," Swift-Tuttle is a ball of dust, ice, rock and dark organic material. It was discovered in July 1862 independently by both Lewis Swift and Horace Parnell Tuttle.
The comet orbits the sun, but follows a very steep incline as compared to the solar system planets — diving down into the solar system to whip around the sun and back out again. So when the comet passes Earth it's traveling at great speed, Chodas said.
Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle approaches Earth every 133 years during its oblique orbit around the sun. It last approached Earth in 1992, and will return in 2126. Its path of debris causes the annual Perseid meteor shower.

And its dust and debris, which create the Perseid meteor shower as they burn up in Earth's atmosphere, are traveling quickly, too — at around 37 miles (59 km) per second. And even though the comet only passes by Earth every 133 years, the meteor shower occurs every year when Earth moves through the trail of its orbit.
"The debris is coming in faster than many other comets because it's a very elongated orbit … so that makes the show a little more spectacular because of the speed," Chodas said.
For viewers in the Northern Hemisphere, the Perseids are one of the best meteor showers of the year — and NASA has called it the "fireball champion" of annual meteor showers for its record-breaking number of extra-bright meteors, called fireballs. Those fireballs are visible even in light-polluted areas like cities (still, there are many more faint meteors that are only visible if you go to a darker area).
Despite its brilliance, this year's conditions aren't ideal, because there's a bright, waxing moon in the sky around the shower's peak. So if you're planning to look Thursday night, wait until the constellation Perseus has risen and the moon has set (around 12-1 a.m. in most locations).
"Go to a sky that is as dark as possible, and then get comfortable, and dark-adapt your eyes and be patient — the average rate is something like one a minute, but some of them are faint," Chodas said. "Since they appear to radiate out of the constellation Perseus, which doesn't rise until late, this meteor shower is better seen in the wee hours of the morning when that constellation is higher in the sky."
And if you miss the meteor shower's peak, or want to look a few days early, don't worry — you can still see meteors before and after the peak.
"The meteor shower lasts several days, because it's a wide cloud of debris that the Earth is passing through," Chodas said.

The bright, ethereal lights of the auroras. The surface of Earth, pockmarked with impact craters. A faint glow emanating from the planet's upper atmosphere. All of these amazing sights were captured in a single nighttime photograph taken by an astronaut aboard the International Space Station.
The photo was originally taken in February 2012, and included a glimpse of the space station, but NASA's Earth Observatory recently released a cropped, labeled version of the stunning scene.

The northern lights, or aurora borealis, are caused by the collision of charged particles with the Earth's atmosphere. When photographed from space, the natural light show — though still beautiful — is perhaps less overwhelming and more easily understood as an atmospheric phenomenon.
The photograph also shows a golden halo, known as airglow, around the rest of the planet. Airglow is another result of the interaction between the sun's radiation and Earth's atmosphere, according to NASA's Earth Observatory.
In addition to a wealth of natural sights, the photo shows the human footprint on the landscape. Artificial lights mark the locations of some northern settlements, including Labrador City and Goose Bay (both in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada), which are labeled in the newly released image.
Wintry conditions also make some features of the Quebec landscape visible 237 miles (382 kilometers) below. The ring-shaped Manicouagan crater was created by an asteroid impact 214 million years ago, according to the Earth Observatory. The massive crater measures 37 miles (60 km) across, and its outline is clearly visible in the lower third of the photograph.

The Perseids, the most widely observed and dependable of the annual meteor displays, will peak during the overnight hours of Thursday, Aug. 11 into the morning of Friday, Aug. 12, and this year has all the earmarks of being a spectacular show.
First, there is the situation regarding the moon. At first glance, it appears that the viewing conditions aren't very good, as the peak night coincides with a waxing gibbous moon, 63-percent illuminated. Its bright light no doubt will wash out all but the very brightest of these swift streaks, which chiefly will emanate from out of the northeast part of the sky. However, there is some very good news: Early Friday morning (Aug. 12), the moon will set near 1:00 a.m. local time. Dawn breaks at about 4:20 a.m. around the mid-northern latitudes. Between those two times, there will be a nearly 3.5-hour "window" during which the sky will be totally dark.
Most meteor showers evolve from comets. The cometary parent of the Perseids is a comet known as Swift-Tuttle. This comet takes approximately 130 years to make one trip around the sun. It was discovered in 1862 and last appeared in our skies in 1992. (It's due back in 2126.) Comets are composed chiefly of frozen gases, and meteoroids that are mixed in with that gas — the bits and pieces that have flaked off from the comet's solid center or nucleus.
Like all comets, Swift-Tuttle leaves behind streams of tiny particles ranging in size from large grains of sand to small pebbles, but with the consistency of cigar ash. They're invisible to people on Earth until, upon entering our atmosphere with immense velocity — 37 miles per second (60 kilometers per second) — they blaze up within the span of a heartbeat and streak across the sky in a brief, blazing finale. Comet Swift-Tuttle probably has passed the sun hundreds of times to produce the present stream of Perseid meteors.

The meteoroids have become distributed all around the comet's elongated elliptical orbit, which takes them out beyond the realms of Pluto and ultimately brings them back to intersect Earth's orbit at almost a right angle, producing a fairly predictable meteor display that lasts for several days in mid-August.
The Perseids intersect the orbit of Earth more or less directly, but on their way in toward the sun, they also pass other planets. In the case of the most massive planet in the solar system, Jupiter, there is no direct encounter; the dross of Comet Swift-Tuttle passes well above this giant world, never coming any closer than about 160 million miles (257 million km) at 11.8-Earth-year intervals — the time it takes for Jupiter to make a complete orbit around the sun.
But on those occasions when it's passing closest to Swift-Tuttle's trail of debris, Jupiter's powerful gravitational field can still slightly perturb the comet particles just enough to nudge them about 930,000 miles (1.5 million km) closer to Earth. The result is usually a noticeably brighter and stronger Perseid display, producing more than the usual complement of meteors.
Most years when the Earth encounters the Perseids, observers in areas where the sky is very dark and clear might count as many as 60 to 90 meteors per hour. (But here's a necessary disclaimer: If you live in an area where haze, smoke and bright city lights proliferate, or tall obstructions block large areas of the sky, you will likely see a lot fewer.)
When Jupiter has had an influence on the Perseid orbit, the meteor numbers tend to ramp up to above-normal levels. That's exactly what happened in 1921, 1945, 1968, 1980 and, most recently, in 2004.
As it turns out, Jupiter recently passed closest to the orbit of Comet Swift Tuttle in November 2014. But an additional 22 months must then pass for the meteoroid zone affected by Jupiter to arrive in the vicinity of Earth. That indicates that the 2016 Perseids could be another "prime year" for the Perseids; they could indeed prove to be unusually numerous. [Top 10 Perseid Meteor Shower Facts]
What do the Perseid pundits say?
In the 2016 edition of the "Observer's Handbook" of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, Margaret Campbell-Brown and Peter Brown noted that, "Some models predict an enhancement in activity from the Perseids in 2016about 7 hours before the traditional peak, but this is from older trails unlikely to produce more than a moderate increase in rates." On their table of meteor showers for 2016, they highlighted the Perseids in bolddue to the possibility of this outburst.
The outburst in question is being forecast by French meteor expert Jeremie Vaubaillon. It shows the Earth moving along in its orbit and encountering a small, albeit concentrated, zone of comet material at around 1 a.m. EDT (0500 GMT) on Aug. 12 that would favor the eastern portions of the U.S. and Canada. But Vaubaillon is cautious. "This trail of material dates is over nine centuries old, making the forecast for a possible outburst less certain," he told me in an email. "Certainly I would look for it, but just keep in mind the uncertainties."

Another noted meteor expert, Mikhail Maslov of Russia, forecasts higher-than-normal Perseid meteor rates: "In 2016, Jupiter will cause a significant increase up to 160-180 meteors per hour. Earth will encounter the perturbed part of the Perseid stream, which was shifted closer to the Earth's orbit by Jupiter's gravitation. This means we have to expect heightened Perseid activity." The "clumping effect"
This year is an auspicious occasion for me, as it marks the 50th summer in which I have watched out for the Perseids. What I (and others) have noted over the years is what some have called the "clumping effect" — that the Perseids appear to come in rapid succession; several or more within a minute or two, followed by a lull of several minutes before the sky suddenly bears fruit once again. Interestingly, while many observers have stated that the Perseids seem to come in bunches, when hourly Perseid observations have been carefully examined using the Poisson distribution formula (explained in statistics textbooks), it has been determined that, more often than not, a random distribution of arrival times has been inferred. Therefore, the "clumping" or bunches may be merely an illusion.
Have a Perseid party
Why not consider organizing a "Perseid party," and have a number of people watching different parts of the sky?
To observe the Perseids, you may need to dress warmly, bring a reclining chair and watch the sky. You need no other equipment. Find a dark observing spot, preferably with a low horizon, and look in any direction. Use this light-pollution map (http://tinyurl.com/zrk7qju) to find dark locations near you.
The Perseids get their name from their apparent radiation from the northern constellation of Perseus. At dusk, the uppermost part of this star pattern is grazing the northern horizon. Not until 11 p.m. local time is this group high enough in the northeast to be conspicuous. At 4 a.m., when Orion has risen, Perseus has reached a lofty perch and is nearly overhead; that's also when you're likely to see the most meteors.

But it is not necessary to continuously stare at Perseus itself if you are looking for these shooting stars. A Perseid may appear in any part of the sky, but its trail, if mentally traced backward, invariably leads back to Perseus.
Typically, they appear as bright, swift streaks. A few outstandingly bright meteors (fireballs) occasionally may be seen. Fainter meteors appear white or yellow; brighter ones green, orange or red. About one-third leave luminous trains, which may be spectacular and can persist for many seconds; the most outstanding meteors often end in flares or bursts (called "bolides") and are even capable of casting shadows! Those are the kind of meteors that tend to elicit screams of delight from Perseid watchers.
You can also contribute valuable observational data. If you decide to do so, use the techniques suggested by the International Meteor Organization (IMO) (http://www.imo.net/visual/major). This way, your data will be in a standard format, which can readily be used for analysis. Send your data to the IMO athttp://www.imo.net/visual/report/electronic.

A comet with a death wish met a truly fiery end today (Aug. 4) when it was destroyed by the sun after diving toward the star at a truly jaw-dropping speed. It is one of the brightest sungrazing comet events in over two decades, one scientist says.
Video of the comet's death dive into the sun was captured by the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) between Aug. 2 and Aug. 4. It shows the comet zooming toward the sun at nearly 373 miles per second (600 kilometers per second). That's a mind-boggling 1.34 million mph!
Comets like the one swallowed by the sun are known as Kreutz sungrazers, and are characterized by orbits that take them incredibly close to the sun. Kreutz comets are believed to be fragments from a single large comet that broke up into smaller pieces thousands of years ago when it got close to the sun and the ice binding it together evaporated.
"This is one of the brightest Kreutz sungrazers we've seen over the past 21 yrs. Awesome!" astronomer Karl Battams tweeted. Battams also said that the comet was the "fastest object in the solar system" when it was destroyed by the sun.

Battams, who operates the NASA-funded Sungrazing Comets Project, provided regular updates on the sungrazer's recent encounter with the sun, which ended with the comet being vaporized.
"This comet didn't fall into the sun, but rather whipped around it – or at least, it would have if it had survived its journey," Sarah Frazier of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland wrote in a statement. "Like most sungrazing comets, this comet was torn apart and vaporized by the intense forces near the sun."
You can see another video of the comet from SOHO here. The view also includes a view from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (another sun-watching spacecraft) as the moon crossed in front of the sun as seen by the observatory.
Kreutz comets travel along what is called the Kreutz path, a single orbit that takes 800 years to complete. Kreutz comets pass by the sun and disintegrate almost every day, and while most go unnoticed, larger fragments such as the recent sungrazer can be spotted more easily, according to Spaceweather.com.
SOHO has been keeping a close eye on the sun's activity for more than 20 years. The satellite is a joint mission between NASA and the European Space Agency. While the mission's intended goal was to better predict space weather — such as solar flares and auroras — the satellite has made several discoveries about the sun and spotted thousands of these sungrazer comets.
