Archaeologists from the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa have been studying a site within the Suikerbosrand National Park ever since artifacts were discovered in the 1960s and ‘70s which suggest a lost human civilization once lived there. Thanks to developments in LiDAR technology which enables researchers to essentially ‘see’ underground, the archaeologists now say they’ve discovered the ruins of a sprawling metropolis lost to the ravages of time. What secrets might lie among this lost city?

The ruins are believed to be evidence of Kweneng, a long-rumored city which was inhabited by no less than 10,000 members of Bantu-speaking tribes which migrated into the area around 900 AD. Little is known about the ancient history of these tribes, but the ruins of Kweneng may change that. Fern Imbali Sixwanha, a PhD candidate working at the site, says that the ruins of Kweneng could potentially rewrite the history of the region:

One of the most enlightening things is, as I’ve been able to understand what we were doing in our past you know, it gives us more broader idea of the people of southern Africa who they were and the types of activities that they did because you can now rediscover that activity line and just general interaction within the society.

The ruins span around 20 square kilometers or 8 square miles and appear to show that Kweneng was once a prosperous and bustling city. Researchers have found numerous pairs of parallel rock walls which they believe shows Kweneng boasted a sophisticated network of passageways, some designed specifically for moving cattle in and out of the city. In the center of the ruins is a large enclosure estimated to be 10,000 square meters (108,000 square feet), and its purpose currently remains unknown.

9 Facts About Project Blue Book, the Government's Top-Secret UFO Program

Between 1952 and 1969, the U.S. Air Force conducted a series of studies on UFO sightings called Project Blue Book. Not only is there a new History Channel series about the program, this year also marks the 50th anniversary of the project’s termination. Get to know the secretive program better.

1. PROJECT BLUE BOOK WASN’T THE GOVERNMENT’S FIRST UFO STUDY.

In 1947, a private pilot named Kenneth Arnold reportedly spotted nine glowing UFOs zooming over Washington's Mount Rainier. The public went wild for the so-called “flying saucers.” Shortly after, the U.S. government launched Project SIGN to determine if such objects were a threat. In 1948, Project SIGN purportedly published a document called the “Estimate of the Situation,” which suggested that extraterrestrials were a possible explanation for UFO sightings. As the story goes, Air Force officials destroyed the document and launched a more skeptical investigation in the late 1940s called Project GRUDGE. Blue Book came a few years later.

2. THE “ESTIMATE OF THE SITUATION” WAS INSPIRED BY A MIND-BOGGLING EVENT.

In the 1960s, Air Force officials denied that the “Estimate of the Situation” document ever existed. Those who vouch for its authenticity, however, say the report was inspired by a 1948 UFO sighting in Alabama, after two experienced pilots saw a torpedo-shaped “glowing object” zip past their aircraft and rocket into the clouds. The report shocked and baffled many of Project SIGN’s researchers, though scientists would later claim the sighting was consistent with a bolide, or bright meteor.

3. “BLUE BOOK” WAS NAMED AFTER A COLLEGE TESTING STAPLE.

Whether UFOs are extraterrestrial in origin is debatable. What’s undeniable is that, during the 1950s, people routinely spotted (or thought they spotted) objects flying over the United States—and it was the onus of the U.S. military to figure out what they were and whether they posed any danger. Blue Book would earn its name because, at the time, Air Force officials equated studying the phenomenon with preparing for a collegiate “blue book” final exam.

4. OFFICIALS DEVELOPED A SPECIAL PROTOCOL FOR HANDLING UFO SIGHTINGS.

A central part of Project Blue Book was the creation of a standardized questionnaire for UFO sightings. Some sample prompts: “Draw a picture that will show the shape of the object or objects … What was the condition of the sky? ... Did the object: Suddenly speed up and rush away at any time? Change shape? Flicker, throb, or pulsate?” Eventually, every U.S. Air Force base ended up designating a special officer to collect these UFO reports.

5. THOUSANDS OF REPORTS WERE COLLECTED—AND SOME HAVEN’T BEEN EXPLAINED.

By the time Project Blue Book was closed, officials had gathered 12,618 UFO reports. Of those, 701 were never explained. Nearly half of those unidentified UFOs appeared in 1952 when a whopping 1501 UFOs were sighted. (Interestingly, that following year, it became a crime for military personnel to discuss classified UFO reports with the public; the risk of breaking the law could mean up to two years imprisonment.)

6. PROJECT BLUE BOOK SAW FIVE LEADERSHIP CHANGES.

Each person in command saw the purpose of Project Blue Book differently. Captain Edward J. Ruppelt, for example, treated the job as a serious scientific quest and is often lauded as the project’s most impartial leader. (Notably, he is responsible for coining the term UFO.) Major Hector Quintanilla, who took over the project in 1963, was more interested in turning Blue Book into a PR front and focused on quelling the public’s interest in UFOs—a desire that would eventually lead to charges of a government cover-up.

7. BLUE BOOK MADE SUCH BAD SCIENTIFIC MISTAKES THAT CONGRESS HAD TO GET INVOLVED.

In 1965, Oklahoma Police, the Tinker Air Force Base, and a local meteorologist using weather radar independently tracked four unexplained flying objects. Under Quintanilla’s advisement, Project Blue Book would claim that these witnesses had simply observed the planet Jupiter. The problem with this explanation? Jupiter wasn’t even visible in the night’s sky. “The Air Force must have had its star finder upside-down during August,” Robert Riser, an Oklahoma planetarium director, said at the time. A series of more badly botched scientific explanations eventually led to a congressional hearing.

8. THE PROJECT’S DESIRE TO DISMISS UNIDENTIFIED PHENOMENA BOTHERED ITS SOLE SCIENTIST.

Project Blue Book had one consistent scientific consultant, astronomer Dr. J. Allen Hynek. In 1968, Hynek wrote: “The staff of Blue Book, both in numbers and in scientific training, is grossly inadequate … there is virtually no scientific dialogue between Blue Book and the outside scientific world … The statistical methods employed by Blue Book are nothing less than a travesty” [PDF]. Hynek held Quintanilla in particularly low regard, saying, “Quintanilla’s method was simple: disregard any evidence that was counter to his hypothesis.”

9. IN 2007, A NEW GOVERNMENT INQUIRY INTO UFOS WAS LAUNCHED.

Between 2007 and 2012, the U.S. government spent $22 million on a new UFO study called the “Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program.” (Nowadays, UFOs are called UAPs, or "Unidentified Aerial Phenomena": You can watch one here.) This January, more than three dozen of the program’s studies became publicly available, revealing the government’s interest in everything from warp drives to invisibility cloaks.

REPORTS of extra-terrestrial happenings in the skies above Dumbarton have been getting UFO watchers excited. 

But the eerie orb of orange light seen hovering above the Kilpatrick Hills may have links closer to China than Mars.

It seems Chinese flying lanterns could be responsible for countless similar UFO sightings across the country. The Khoom Fay lanterns, linked to Chinese New Year celebrations, can fly at least a mile high in the sky. 

And it appears that people seeing them have been left believing they had witnessed alien activity and posted details of the incidents on sky-watchers’ websites. 

On one site, ufoinfo.com, one unnamed witness reported a ‘sighting’ in Old Kilpatrick.

They wrote: “I was at a house party and me and another left to go out the front of the house, shortly after the bells. The two of us saw an orange light, moving very slowly at low altitude. It was in our field of vision for about five minutes.”

THE RACE OF GIANTS THAT INHABITED EARTH BEFORE THE GREAT FLOOD

The Nephilim were a race of giants that came to dominate before the Great Flood; These mysterious beings are mentioned in ancient texts as Giants, descendants of the Fallen Angels.

They were the product of illicit relationships between fallen angels and human women before the flood and Noah’s Ark.

The word ‘NEPHILIM’:

It is the untranslated pronunciation of non-translated Hebrew. Nephilim: feline fallen: a tyrant or bully, giant and in some English translation the Nephilim are known as giants. Interestingly, in the Greek Septuagint ‘Nephilim’ was used to describe the giants.

However, the name ‘Nephilim’ is also frequently used when describing the race of the giants that inhabited Canaan at the time of the Israelite conquest according to Numbers 13:33.

When looking at ancient texts, we note that in the Hebrew Bible, the word ‘Nephilim’ appears twice, both times in the Torah, the first in Genesis 6: 1-4, just before the story of Noah’s ark. And the second in Numbers 13: 32-33 when the spies sent to Canaan reported seeing “fearsome giants”.

The Nephilim were on earth in those days and also later when the sons of God entered into the daughters of men and gave birth to them; They were the powerful ones that were in ancient times, the men of renown.

And there we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who came from the Nephilim, and we were in our sight like locusts, and thus we were in full sight of them.

In the Bible, it clearly states (and is used as a traditional interpretation) that “celestial beings” mated with humans; an extremely controversial claim rejected by many.

From all the above, we can understand that, although there are numerous documents that refer to the Nephilim, it is clear that these beings were not native to the Earth and that, in fact, they were a hybrid species, of a half human nature.

The object’s lack of craters suggests the Kuiper Belt isn’t filled with lots of space hazards

BARELY BLEMISHED  Kuiper Belt object MU69, nicknamed Ultima Thule, is relatively free of craters, despite being billions of years old. That smooth face may mean there are few small Kuiper Belt objects.

The closest-yet image of the ancient Kuiper Belt object, captured as the New Horizons spacecraft flew by January 1, shows a relatively smooth face unmarred by impact craters.  

“The thing is just not covered in craters,” says planetary scientist Kelsi Singer of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colo., of the image, released January 24.

That lack of impact scars suggests that the Kuiper Belt, a reservoir of ancient space rocks beyond the orbit of Neptune, has fewer small objects than scientists expected. If true, that could mean that the precursors to planets grew up fast, without leaving many protoplanetary crumbs behind.

Snapshots taken when New Horizons flew past Pluto and its moons in 2015 showed that those bodies are surprisingly smooth, too. Many of Pluto’s craters could have been covered by geologic activity on the dwarf planet, such as the movement of glaciers (SN Online: 10/15/15). But Pluto’s largest moon Charon is thought to be less active and so shouldn’t erase its craters (SN Online: 7/13/18). Singer and her colleagues have argued that lack of craters meant there were just not that many small objects available to smack into Pluto and Charon.

“If you can’t get geology to erase the craters on Charon, in particular, it’s kind of an inescapable conclusion that you have to just not make the craters in the first place,” Singer says.

The real test of this idea came with New Horizons’ flyby of Ultima Thule, whose official name is MU69. If MU69 lacked small craters that would mean relatively few small objects exist in the outer solar system for it to collide with, Singer and colleagues argue in a paper posted at arXiv.org in December.

The latest picture of MU69 shows just a few small craters along its top edge — where shadows make crater rims stand out in relief — probably left by objects about 100 meters wide. A large depression on the smaller of the object’s two lobes could be an impact crater left by an object about 700 meters wide.

A shortage of small objects that could dent bodies like MU69 could rule out some theories about how the planets and their predecessors formed. One idea about this time in the early solar system is that dust grains slowly glommed together to gradually build larger bodies. Another theory suggests that larger objects collided and smashed each other to smithereens. But both scenarios would probably have left many small objects floating around the Kuiper Belt today, Singer says.  

If protoplanets congealed directly out of the nebula of gas and dust that preceded the formation of the solar system, however, they could have grown to between tens and hundreds of kilometers wide relatively quickly, Singer says. That means there would be few small cosmic kibbles and bits left over.

Planetary scientist Alessandro Morbidelli of the Côte d’Azur Observatory in Nice, France, says it’s premature to draw any conclusions. Crater counts on Pluto and Charon are not reliable, he says. And while he agrees that MU69 is the “ultimate test,” he says higher resolution pictures are needed to see if its barely marred visage holds up under closer scrutiny. The current best image was taken seven minutes before New Horizons’ closest approach to MU69, when the spacecraft was still 6,700 kilometers away. Better images are on the spacecraft’s computer, waiting to be transmitted to Earth.

New Horizons will continue sending back data on MU69 until September 2020.

Project Blue Book Episode 4 Review: Operation Paperclip

History be damned as the Nazi’s invade on Project Blue Book Episode 4.

Project Blue Book Episode 4

Project Blue Book episode 4 takes a nosedive into the rabbit hole, but the wild storylines follow real conspiracy and UFO mythologies that are popular on the web. It also presents an intriguing alternate theory to the idea that UFOs have anything to do with aliens at all.

Take an odd part of history, add a bit of conspiracy mythology, then sprinkle with magic Hollywood dust and up sprouts a huge, beautiful tree of fantasy. That would sum up my feelings on “Operation Paperclip.” I am a student of history, so I relish in historical accuracy. However, I am also a sci-fi buff, and this latest episode frustrated the history buff in me while exciting my sci-fi side.

Let’s get into it. The show begins with Hynek on an airplane. The first mystery presented was that the passenger cabin of the aircraft looked more like a train with curtains over the windows and seats that faced one another. However, in a tweet, show creator and writer David O’Leary wrote: “Yes, these old 1950s planes really did have train-like booths that faced each other. And lots more leg room!” Score one for historical accuracy! Granted, it’s one of the few points that I will award in this category for this particular episode.

Hynek then sees a UFO flying around the airplane. We are lead to believe Hynek is experiencing this sighting, but then he wakes from a dream. He was dreaming about his most recent UFO case - a sighting by the passengers and crew of a commercial aircraft near Huntsville, Alabama.

Quinn feels certain he knows who is responsible for this UFO incident and he is not very happy about it. Quinn explains that after World War II, German scientists were snatched up by the U.S. as part of Operation Paperclip. He says Huntsville was set up to house German scientists working on rocket technology, led by Werner von Braun. Having fought in World War II, Quinn is with the situation.

Hynek and Quinn travel to Huntsville to find out what the Germans are up to. Quinn is convinced that the UFO that buzzed the airplane was a rocket built by the former German scientists, who he believes were not concerned with endangering the lives of the passengers.

Security denies Hynek and Quinn access to the base, but Quinn crashes through the barricades anyway. This does allow them an audience with Von Braun but also lands Quinn a suspension. Von Braun says he is familiar with Hynek’s work, shows them a secret rocket launch and offers Hynek a job. He admits it was one of his rockets that buzzed the airplane, but Hynek doesn’t believe him.

To make a long story short, after leaving, Hyenk and Quinn break into the base again. This time they sneak around and find a body floating in a suspended animation container. It looks like an alien. The base alarms sound, so the two race off, only to be caught. Von Braun tells them what they saw was a monkey that had been sent into space and was undergoing testing as to the effects of space on its body. Hynek tells him he is suspicious of their project because the rocket explanation for the UFO sighting did not fit the witness testimony. There is something von Braun is hiding.

At the end of the show, we see what that is. After Quinn and Hynek have left, General Harding, Quin’s boss, shows up to join von Braun on a tarmac. A large saucer-shaped object is then wheeled out of a hangar, and a pilot in a flight suit is put into the craft. This pilot is complaining he doesn’t want to do this, but he seems drugged and unable to struggle. The craft looks like human technology, but when it is started up, a weird field surrounds it, then it disappears.
The show is mostly full on science fiction with modern UFO and conspiracy mythologies expertly weaved into the story. The visuals are also stunning. It all makes for a fun and exciting show.

Project Blue Book, the TV show, is getting more exciting, and maybe that is due to its divergence from reality. Many feel the show does not need to move away from the real Project Blue Book investigations to be exciting, and that may be the case. I know first hand proving that to a producer is near impossible. However, I find this particular journey into conspiratorial sci-fi is intelligent in that it is expertly incorporating the UFO and conspiracy mythologies while making the viewers think about alternate explanations to the UFO mystery.

The Project Blue Book Files

Huntsville is a city built by rockets. It is the home of NASA’s Marshall Space Center, but before NASA was created, the military had been testing missiles in the area since World War II. After the war ended, rocket testing continued. Operation Paperclip was real, and Werner von Braun was a real rocket scientist brought to the U.S. The U.S. first brought the German rocket scientists to Fort Bliss, Texas, but in the ‘50s, von Braun and his team were moved to Huntsville.

Von Braun’s popularity was primarily due to his involvement in the development of the V-2 rocket. This rocket terrified the allies during the war because it was the first ballistic missile. While the space program was a real thing, the real importance to the military was the development of bigger and better rockets. Especially with the prospect that a ballistic missile would be the ideal delivery system for the newly developed atom bomb.

In UFO circles, there have been many rumors about von Braun. From the belief that he had to be in the know regarding alleged crashes of alien spacecraft such as Roswell, to a rumor that he knew the government was faking emergencies to distract the public and that one day a UFO scare would be used for that purpose.

The Nazi’s also have a UFO history according to many conspiracy theories. It is believed they communicated with aliens and were able to develop technologies based off of alien technology. You can even find pictures online of saucer-shaped craft with Nazi symbols and guns mounted on them. It is rumored that the Nazi’s tried to mount weapons on alien spacecraft and it disrupted the propulsion systems and would not work. There are also rumors that the Germans were developing anti-gravity. In particular, a bell-shaped craft creatively named The Bell. The propulsion system consisted of two cylinders filled with a mercury-like substance that spun in opposite directions.

The way the craft disappeared at the end of Project Blue Bookis reminiscent of another conspiracy theory, one known as the Philadelphia Experiment. This mythology was first brought forth in a UFO book, although the author did not find the story credible. Despite the author’s opinion, this theory has a wide following. The story was that the U.S. developed technology that could render a ship invisible. Allegedly in 1943, the USS Eldridge, a 300 ft long Navy destroyer, was used to experiment with the technology. When the invisibility machine was enabled, the ship disappeared. When it reappeared crewmen reported feeling sick, and some were killed by somehow being embedded into the steal of the vessel.

In reality, the Germans were undoubtedly ahead of their time. At the time, technology such as jet propulsion and rockets were very advanced, and the Germans were way ahead of the U.S. in these areas. They even had a jet shaped like a stealth bomber that did partially inspire some of the stealth bomber’s characteristics. However, beyond rumors, there is no evidence they developed anti-gravity or canoodled with aliens.

The end of this Project Blue Bookepisode seems to suggest UFO sightings are actually due to experimental aircraft. The CIA has suggested this as well. In a CIA report regarding the development of aircraft at Area 51, there is a section titled “U-2s, UFOs, and Operation Blue Book.” In this section, they claim that many UFO reports were due to unwitting civilians spotting test flights of the U-2 spy plane. The report claims, “This, in turn, led to the Air Force’s Operation Blue Book.” The problem with the last statement is that the U.S. Air Force began investigating UFO sightings in 1947 with Project Sign and Project Blue Book began in 1952. The U.S. did not conduct test flights of the U-2 until the mid to late 50s. It is highly likely U-2 test flights did cause UFO reports, but it is not possible for the U-2 test flights to have caused the creation of Project Blue Book.

Een ongeïdentificeerd vliegend object, met een diameter van ongeveer 100 meter, roteerde rond zijn eigen as op een hoogte van zo’n 500 meter.

NASA Operational Task Group, gespecialiseerd in het ontvangen en verwerken van ruimte data, ontving inkomende data van dat object. Op dit moment, terwijl ik hier spreek, wordt die data verwerkt en onderzocht door NASA. Alle gegevens, de informatie van de radarinstallaties, de visuele informatie, en het vastleggen van de radiosignalen van de ufo zijn verzameld.

Gebaseerd op die data kunnen we zeggen dat het object dat zich boven het Pentagon bevond, geïdentificeerd kan worden als een object van onbekende oorsprong. Hypothetisch, buitenaards. Echter, er waren geen signalen van agressiviteit.

De herhalende radio signalen onder de naam FBR 180814.J0422+73, vastgelegd door specialisten van de CHIME Sterrenwacht, Okanagan Valley, in British Columbia, komen overeen met het patroon van de signalen van het object boven het Pentagon, zoals vastgelegd door NASA.

Op dit moment wordt reeds gewerkt aan het berekenen van de coördinaten van dat signaal en het bijbehorende bewoonde sterren…. ” [opname afgebroken]

Alles op de video, de personen, het onderwerp, de hele setting, ziet er zeer authentiek uit. De vraag is in deze post-waarheidstijd dit echte beelden zijn. Als het niet zo is betekent het dat iemand grote moeite doet om professioneel het grote publiek te misleiden.

We weten dat diverse instanties daar toe in staat zijn, maar iets kunnen en doen zijn twee verschillende dingen.

OVereind blijft staan dat het onderwerp ufo’s serieus genomen moet worden. Teveel getrainde waarnemers, piloten, militairen, luchtverkeersleiders en zelfs astronauten (inclusief Apollo-maanreizigers) hebben zich hierover al tientalleen jaren over uitgesproken.

Persoonlijk zou ik uiteraard niet verbaasd zijn dat men over ufo’s tot op de hoogste niveaus kennis heeft, dat er over discussies plaatsvinden etc. etc. Reeds lang wordt gewacht op aankondigingen van onze leiders – sommigen zouden ‘leiders’ graag tussen aanhalingstekens zetten – omtrent buitenaards contact dat reeds decennia gaande is, maar slechts voor privaat gewin wordt aangewend, ten koste van planeet en bewoners (platen, dieren en mensen).

Het feit dat dit filmpje -echt of fake- staat wat mij betreft symbool dat er in de breedte, ook bij politici inmiddels grote behoefte is aan eerlijkheid op dit terrein. Daarvoor lekken er op dit moment teveel geheimen naar buiten over allerlei belangwekkende onderwerpen.

Wellicht ten overvloede: alles gaat veranderen zodra contact met buitenaardse beschavingen wordt toegegeven. Techniek is daarbij een van de belangrijkste gamechangers, niet alleen omdat energie en transport het allerbelangrijkste is op het gebied van de immense planetaire vervulling, maar ook dat grondstoffen al eeuwenlang redenen zijn geweest en nog steeds zijn voor conflicten.

Nu de rijken nog steeds rijker worden en de groep armen groeit – zie maar weer eens het recente rapport van Oxfam – wordt ook de ongelijkheid groter. Ongelijkheid ook op het gebied van kennis en informatie. Op het terrein van buitenaards contact wordt vals gespeeld. Politiek en wetenschap vervullen op dat terrein ook een uiterst bedenkelijke rol, door onwetendheid (volstrekt onacceptabel in 2019), onkunde en criminele geheimhouding.

Ik hoop dat er van dit soort filmpjes naar buiten gaan komen en eindelijk eens behoorlijke staartjes krijgen, maar ik ben bang van niet. Immers het geheim van de waarheid wordt het beste in stand gehouden door die waarheid gewoon op straat te gooien. We zijn allemaal gepuppytraind om er gewoon omheen te lopen.

1st Color X-Rays of Human Body Are Bloody Amazing

Stunning new color X-ray images, from a company called Mars Bioimaging, in New Zealand, seem to make flesh and bone translucent and hyperreal.

The gif above shows one of the company's strange and fascinating images: a slice of human ankle, with off-white, rugged bones, bloody-looking muscle tissue and a pad of fat smeared protectively under the heel with a whipped-cream texture.

Gigantische holte ontdekt op Antarctica onder “gevaarlijkste gletsjer ter wereld” - HLN.be

De gigantische leegte onderaan de Thwaites-gletsjer is bijna 300 meter hoog en meet 10 op 4 km. Met een oppervlakte van zo’n 40 km² is de holte groter dan de stad Oostende en beslaat ze twee derde van heel Manhattan. De opening is zó groot dat het een duidelijke brok is van de zowat 252 miljard ton ijs die Antarctica elk jaar kwijtspeelt. Volgens een nieuwe studie verschenen in Science Advanceszou er ooit 14 miljard ton ijs hebben ingepast, maar alleen al in de laatste drie jaren  ging het grootste gedeelte van dat volume verloren.

Pietro Milillo, hoofdauteur van het artikel, zegt dat zo’n holte onder een gletsjer een aanzienlijke rol kan spelen in het wegsmelten van het ijs. “Als er meer warmte en water onder de gletsjer geraken, smelt die sneller.” Niet onbelangrijk, omdat de Thwaites-gletsjer op dit moment een aandeel van ongeveer 4 procent heeft in de stijging van het globale zeeniveau. Mocht de hele gletsjer zo groot als de staat Florida wegsmelten, dan stijgt de zeespiegel naar schatting met 65 centimeter.

En dat is niet eens het slechtst denkbare scenario. De Thwaites houdt ook aangrenzende gletsjers en ijsmassa’s meer landinwaarts in bedwang. Als die ondersteuning zou wegvallen, zijn de gevolgen niet te overzien. Dan zou het zeepeil nog eens met een extra 2,4 meter stijgen. Vandaar dat de Thwaites-gletsjer beschouwd wordt als cruciaal in de natuurlijke structuur van het Antarctische gebied.

Hoelang de Thwaites-gletsjer het nog zal volhouden, is moeilijk in te schatten. Wetenschappers zijn onlangs letterlijk van wal gestoken voor een expeditie in het kader van een van de belangrijkste onderzoeken wereldwijd in het huidige tijdperk.

Ter illustratie, de woorden van David Holland, geoloog aan de New York University, vorig jaar aan The Washington Post: “Voor de globale wijziging van de zeespiegel in de volgende eeuw kan zowat alles herleid worden tot de Thwaites-gletsjer”.

Over de ontdekking van de serieuze holte zegt glacioloog en co-auteur Eric Rignot, verbonden aan de University of California in Irvine en aan NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena: “We vermoeden al jaren dat Thwaites niet stevig vasthangt aan het grondgesteente eronder. Dankzij de nieuwe generatie van satellieten kunnen we nu eindelijk ook de details zien.” 

Volgens de studie is de verborgen leegte slechts één geval van het “complexe patroon van terugtrekking en van smeltijs” op de Thwaites-gletsjer.  In sommige delen ervan trekt de gletsjer elk jaar met wel 800 meter terug en smelt het driftijs er aan een tempo van 200 meter per jaar. In andere delen is dat minder. Het patroon past niet in de huidige modellen over de verhouding tussen ijskap en oceaan en vereist verder onderzoek naar de interactie tussen water en ijs in de ijskoude maar opwarmende omgeving van Antarctica. Dat onderzoek zit in de pijplijn: de  U.S. National Science Foundation en de British National Environmental Research Council hebben samen een grootschalig veldproject van vijf jaar opgezet om meer te weten te komen over de Thwaites-gletsjer, overigens een van de moeilijkst bereikbare plaatsen ter wereld.

Emotioneel redeneren zoals Yoda of analytisch zoals Spock: wie van de twee maakt slimste beslissing? - HLN.be

Psychologen van de Univeristy of Waterloo onderzochten het effect van emoties bij het oplossen van moeilijke vraagstukken

De ene laat zich beïnvloeden door zijn emoties, de andere maakt alleen maar weloverwogen en berekende beslissingen. Het onderscheid tussen die twee verschillende manieren van nadenken, sluit aan bij de fictieve karakters van Yoda (Star Wars) en Spock (Star Trek), maar wie van de twee personages is wijzer? Spoiler: Yoda wint dit gevecht alvast volgens de psychologen die het onderzoek leidden.

Het groene mannetje uit de Star Wars-saga houdt immers rekening met zijn gevoelens én die van anderen. Op die manier maakt hij gebalanceerde keuzes. Op vlak van wijsheid is hij dan ook de ‘sterkste’ Jedi die er bestaat.

Yoda versus Spock

De kenmerken van het fictieve personage staan in het onderzoek pal tegenover die van zijn - al even legendarische - concurrent: Spock. De ruimtevaartofficier in de televisieserie Star Trek laat zich, net zoals Yoda, leiden door het verstand, al pakt hij vooropgestelde problemen op een ietwat andere manier aan. Zijn personage tracht voornamelijk logisch te redeneren, zonder rekening te houden met gevoelens. Bijkomende schade? Zolang die het het algemeen belang dient, is dat een gefundeerde beslissing. 

Maar om verstandige keuzes te maken, moeten individuen wel rekening houden met de emoties die zijzelf alsook anderen ervaren, zo stellen de onderzoekers.

Emotionele diversiteit

Om tot die conclusie te komen, voerden enkele psychologen van de University of Waterloo talrijke experimenten uit. In totaal namen er zo’n 3.700 participanten deel aan het onderzoek. De proefpersonen werden gedurende vier jaar regelmatig geconfronteerd met emotionele uitdagingen, situaties die interpersoonlijke conflicten uitlokten, en moeilijke geopolitieke vraagstukken.

De onderzoekers concentreerden zich daarbij op de emotionele diversiteit - het vermogen om verschillende emoties, negatief en positief, te ervaren – van de deelnemers. “Een diversiteit aan emoties kan niet alleen de fysieke en emotionele gezondheid van een individu bevorderen, ze maken die personen ook wijzer”, aldus hoofdauteur van de studie Igor Grossmann. “Verder brengt deze studie talrijke manieren in kaart die wijs redeneren stimuleren, rekening houden met persoonlijke ervaringen is daar een voorbeeld van.” Bij een gebrek aan emoties of zonder een gezonde mix aan negatieve en positieve gevoelens, zadelden de deelnemers anderen (of zichzelf) vaker op met meer conflicten of problemen, zo bleek.

Kortom, wie zich af en toe laat leiden door emoties neemt de verstandigste beslissingen. Dat is natuurlijk op voorwaarde dat die emoties in balans worden gehouden. Eenmaal de negatieve of positieve gevoelens domineren, zijn wijze beslissingen ver zoek.

Deep space radio waves baffle astronomers; aliens not ruled out

Astronomers can’t rule out that possibility after an exciting new discovery. A team in Canada recently stumbled upon ultra-brief repeating waves from deep space for only the second time in history.

Appearing on ABC News Live, Senior SETI astronomer Seth Shostak talked about the fascinating find: "Could that be aliens that are in those galaxies and they have some need to get in touch... well maybe."

"It is something new, every time we see something we’ve never seen before that is an opportunity to learn something new about the universe," astrophysicist Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi told ABC News Live.

Shostak also shared behind-the-scenes information about a promising signaldiscovered by SETI in 1997 and how he reacted at the time.

"We had picked up a signal, it was passing all the tests. This looked like the real deal, I was there waiting for the Men in Black to show up... " he said.

BUITENAARDS CONTACT BEKEND GEMAAKT TIJDENS VN VERGADERING ( VIDEO )

Net voor afgelopen kerst publiceerden wij een artikel met daarin opnames van een piramidevormige ufo boven het Pentagon.

Nu verschijnt er uitgelekte opname van een geheime vergadering bij de VN waarin wordt gezegd dat er een buitenaards piramidevormig ruimteschip is gesignaleerd boven het Pentagon.

De herkomst van de opname is onduidelijk omdat de originele beelden in sneltreinvaart door de censuurcommissie van Youtube werden verwijderd. Gelukkig zijn een aantal mensen erin geslaagd de video te kopiëren zodat deze nog steeds te bekijken is. 

Wat daardoor wel ontbreekt zijn de mogelijkheden om te kunnen controleren waar deze opname vandaan komt en of deze echt is. Coen Vermeeren, lang werkzaam bij de Technische Universiteit (TU) in Delft en met jarenlange ervaring als het gaat om ufo's, spreekt zich uit over de VN beelden en denkt/hoopt dat ze echt zijn.

In de gelekte video zien we een deel van een sessie bij de Algemene Vergadering van de VN. Wanneer is niet duidelijk en er wordt aan de aanwezigen gevraagd om niets te filmen of om audio opnames te maken en absolute geheimhouding te bewaren over wat er bekendgemaakt gaat worden. Verder een waarschuwing dat als mensen toch proberen opnames te publiceren zij vervolgd zullen worden.

Vervolgens geeft de voorzitter, Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces, het woord aan een dame genaamd Aliva Prokofveva,oprichter en CEO van het ruimteplatform Galaktika. 

Ze zegt dat ze een mededeling heeft en die is dat afgelopen december (welke dag wordt niet gezegd) er een piramidevormige ufo verscheen boven het Pentagon. 

Een object met een doorsnede van zo’n 100 meter dat vloog op een hoogte van 500 meter en om zijn eigen as draaide. 

Dit gebeurtenis werd ook vastgelegd en gevolgd door een groep specialisten van NASA, die allerlei gegevens ontving van het vreemde object. Deze zijn geanalyseerd en het resultaat daarvan wordt dan door Prokofveva gedeeld in de VN vergadering. 

Ze hebben daarvoor radarbeelden gebruikt, visuele waarnemingen en radiosignalen die afkomstig waren van de ufo. Conclusie is dat ze zeker weten dat hier sprake is van een object met onbekende herkomst. 

Dan valt inderdaad het woord buitenaards en er wordt bij gezegd dat de intenties van het schip niet vijandig waren. 

Tenslotte zegt Prokofveva dat de vreemde radiosignalen die eerder deze maand door een observatorium in Canada werden opgevangen van een melkwegstelsel op een afstand van 1,5 miljard lichtjaren identiek zijn aan de signalen die afkomstig zijn van de piramidevormige ufo.

Ondanks dat de waarneming boven Moskou negen jaar geleden plaatsvond, is niemand er nog is geslaagd om hier een verklaring voor te vinden. 

Om te zien hoe het er in Moskou destijds uitzag, hierna nog eens de opname:

Nu zijn we negen jaar verder en wordt er boven het Pentagon in Amerika een vergelijkbaar object 
waargenomen. 

Omdat er meerdere opnames zijn, ook van de UFO boven het Kremlin, lijken filmbewerkingen in deze gevallen uitgesloten. Ook een Russische politicus ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aleksey_Pushkov ) heeft de UFO boven het Kremlin dus besproken in zijn politieke praatprogramma op de Russische televisie, en hij heeft het zeer serieus genomen. 

De opname vanuit een auto, op 19 december, is naar mijn mening echt spectaculair. Ze rijden vlak langs het Pentagon en ze zeggen op een gegeven moment dat de UFO verdwenen is, terwijl op hetzelfde moment op hun opname, boven in beeld, je de gigantische UFO nog gewoon kan zien, maar ze kijken er onder door of ze herkennen de vorm even niet. 

Volgens mij zijn deze beelden net zo spectaculair als indertijd de UFO boven de Rotskoepel op de Tempelberg in Jerusalem, alleen gaat het nu om een veel groter object dat ook veel langer is blijven hangen, met name indertijd in Moskou boven het Kremlin, en dit object is kennelijk geïnteresseerd in de beleidsmakers/machtscentra van de twee grootste kernmachten.

Jose Canseco is at it again. No, the former Oakland Athletics star is not attempting a comeback at baseball nor mixed martial arts, nor is he dipping into the steroids bag again. Jose is back to tweeting about aliens of the space kind and has now added a new twist – his theories on time travel that he claims were given to him by extraterrestrials. Is this for rel or is he trying to get an invitation to compete on Dancing With The Stars?

“We are in communication with aliens with a very flexible body composition called the AI51”

That was Canseco’s first of a series of tweets on January 30th about aliens. It’s not clear what “AI51” is, although it’s possibly a combined abbreviation of ‘Artificial Intelligence, Area 51’, but searches come up with nothing on aliens with that name regardless of body composition. Is this a new classification?

“These aliens are going to teach us how to try and travel the brain can physically travel without the body.”

Hmm. Is he alluding to time travel via astral projection? Is he communicating directly with these aliens or does Jose have access to some secret government files?

“Aliens have been trying to teach us how to time travel but first we have to change our body composition which we are not willing to do we have tried with animals and it has failed.”

Sounds like Jose just watched The Island of Dr. Moreau. Or is he privy to secret cloning and genetic experiments going on in China?

“Time travel puts 42,651 pounds of pressure on a human skeletal structure…. can you detach the brain from the body and equalize the pressure it could be done”

Where did that figure come from? Some scientists say the maximum pressure a human can endure is 70 times normal atmospheric pressure or 1029 pounds per square inch. Is that what you’re talking about, Jose? And isn’t the brain part of the body? How can pressure on the brain alone be equalized? What kind of science is this?

“Our science is totally irrelevant to aliens”

Oh, well that explains it … not! At least it explains why these “aliens” are communicating with Jose Canseco and not Neil deGrasse Tyson. Or perhaps they’re fans of the 1980s Oakland Athletics and the “Bash Brothers” – Canseco and Mark McGwire, the team’s steroid-infused home run tandem. Or could it be that Canseco has dealt with them before?

“Jose we do not want you to run for president. You’re destined for much greater things in the battle against the androids and the alien masters. Elements of the United States government are compromised by the androids and aliens, they are deeply in at all levels, cannot trust.”

Jose’s time machine?

In December 2018, Canseco tweeted that he was considering running for president and @YabaiKankei begged him to stay where he’s at – wherever that is – and battle the aliens in the government from there. Why would @YabaiKankei know that Canseco was fighting against aliens?

“Some aliens deleted my acc.”

In 2012, Canseco disappeared from Twitter for a time and revealed why when he returned. Or did he?

“I actually died over night and came back to life now I am a vampire and you are my apprentice”

Died and came back? Was he dabbling in time travel in 2012? And why is he complicating things by throwing in vampires?

“When I died I saw Elvis and micheal they said hello”

OK, Jose. We skeptics need more clarification. Let’s hope the aliens don’t take away his Twitter account again before Canseco can explain more about time travel, aliens, vampires, Elvis and Michael.

This week’s mystery booms were spread out throughout the eastern half of the United States, yet they all seemed to occur on the same day. Could they be connected? In Chicago, Illinois, residents reported “loud booming” or poppig noises late in the evening of Tuesday, January 29. Some people said the booming was so loud it shook the earth under their feet.

Our page is inundated with reports of this stuff,” says Adam Lucio of Illinois Storm Chasers, “People have been reporting that they’ve been hearing these loud booms that sound like thunder or a car crash and in many cases, it’s scaring them because they aren’t sure what it is.” In the Chicago incident, so far the best theory is that the booms were caused by cryoseisms, sometimes called “frost quakes.” These rare geological events are thought to occur when soil or bedrock breaks apart as groundwater freezes, but aren’t well understood.

While the cryoseism theory sounds plausible in icy Chicago, two other booms which occurred on the same day can’t so easily be explained. Farther to the east in Pennsylvania, residents of south Philadelphia were awoken late on the evening of January 29 by a boom loud enough to shake their houses and windows. After Philadelphia police received several reports of explosions, the U.S. Geological Service and the Department of Defense were contacted, but neither agency knows anything about the mystery booms.

That is, at least publicly.

Meanwhile, houses in Panama City, Florida were shaken on the same day by what was reported as a “loud bang,” although this one was reported in the afternoon. Curiously, some residents even reported feeling pressure changes and unexplained headaches after the noise was heard. Floridians took to social media to speculate about the cause of the bang, with explanations ranging from earthquakes to military activity. Neither the National Weather Service nor nearby Eglin Air Force Base had any information to share, but Bay County Emergency Management services are investigating the incident.

Why have these booms become so common recently?

With no information from authorities, what are we left with? Three mystery booms in three states all on the same day within twelve hours of each other. I don’t know about you, but I’m starting to get genuinely creeped out over the frequency of these mystery booms and the total lack of explanation. While no information has been offered up by any official channels, I’m confident that someone or some agency somewhere knows at least something about these mystery booms – something they’re not sharing with the public. What’s more terrifying: the thought that clandestine military activity is causing sonic booms around the country, or that some unknown natural force might be behind the phenomenon?
