A Bizarre Pulsar Switches Between Two Brightness Modes. Astronomers Finally Figured Out Why.
Pulsars are the lighthouses of the universe. These rotating dead stars shoot twin jets of radiation from their poles, usually with a predictable rhythm. But sometimes pulsars behave strangely, and one pulsar in particular has had astronomers scratching their heads for years. It’s called PSR J1023+0038, and a decade ago, it shut off its jets and began oscillating between two brightness levels in an unpredictable pattern. Now, scientists think they understand why: it is busy eating a neighboring star.
When a supergiant star approaches the end of its lifespan, it will explode and collapse into a back hole if it has enough mass, or into a neutron star if it does not. Neutron stars are the remaining, ultra-dense cores of the old star. They are often very fast-spinning, and a subset of them become pulsars. PSR J1023+0038 began life this way, and when it was discovered in 2007, it behaved like a normal pulsar.
But it didn’t stay that way.
In 2013, something changed. The radio pulses – evidence of its twin lighthouse beams – shut off. The was a sudden explosion of energy at multiple wavelengths: gamma rays and X-rays increased by a factor of five, and in visible light the star brightened by 1-2 magnitude. Astronomers also discovered that it seemed to have formed an accretion disk: a hot swirling mass of material surrounding the star.
Perhaps most strangely, the star began alternating between two intensities in X-ray wavelengths: a high mode and a low mode, and it has continued like this over the entire decade since. It spends about 70% of its time in high mode, the rest in low, and alternates between the two every few seconds or minutes on an unpredictable schedule.
Recently, astronomers devised an ambitious plan to find out what’s going on.
“Our unprecedented observing campaign to understand this pulsar’s behavior involved a dozen cutting-edge ground-based and space-borne telescopes,” says Francesco Coti Zelati of the Institute of Space Sciences in Barcelona.
These telescopes covered a gamut of electromagnetic wavelengths, and with them, astronomers were able to piece together what was going on.
Here’s what they found. The accretion disk is made of matter being pulled from the pulsar’s neighboring star. This matter, as it closes in on the pulsar and begins to accumulate, is heated by the solar wind. The matter begins to glow in X-ray, UV, and visible light, and the hot, glowing material is what astronomers have been seeing as the pulsar’s ‘high mode.’ Eventually, however, there is a process by which the matter is expelled at high energies, leaving perpendicular to the accretion disc, in the direction of the pulsar’s jets.
“Enormous amounts of matter, similar to cosmic cannonballs, are launched into space within a very brief time span of tens of seconds,” says Maria Cristina Baglio of New York University Abu Dhabi, and the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics.
This violent expulsion results in the pulsar returning to its ‘low mode,’ having removed the heated material from its vicinity.
The cycle then repeats.
Through an incredible collaborative effort by astronomers around the world, using the best instruments humanity has to offer, the PSR J1023+0038 mystery has been solved.
The lessons learned from this weird pulsar have taught us more about the physics of accretion, and that knowledge can now be applied in the study of other unexplained variable phenomena, including the accretion disks of some black holes.

The Pentagon's office to investigate UFOs revealed on Thursday a new website where the public can access declassified information about reported sightings.
The site will be operated by the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO,) a relatively new Pentagon program established to analyze reports of what the government officially refers to as unidentified anomalous (or aerial) phenomena. The Department of Defense announced the website in a press release, hailing it as a "one-stop shop" for photos and video of UAP approved for public release.
The site will also soon be a place where U.S. government and military personnel can report objects violating U.S. airspace or flying in ways believed to be beyond the capabilities of human technology.
"The department is committed to transparency with the American people on AARO's work on UAP," according to a statement from the defense department. "This website will serve as a one-stop shop for all publicly available information related to AARO and UAP, and AARO will regularly update the website with its most recent activities and findings as new information is cleared for public release."

AARO founded after report finds hundreds of UAP sightings
In a short message at the top of the website, AARO Director Sean Kirkpatrick said the site is intended to shed light on the work of an office Congress created in July 2022.
AARO was launched after the Office of the Director of National Intelligence identified 144 military UAP encounters since 2004 in a preliminary assessment released in June 2021. That figured jumped this year to more than 500 military UAP reports, many of which cannot be explained as natural occurrences such as unmanned aircrafts or weather balloons.
Astrophysicists caution that otherworldly explanations aren't likely even in the absence of a natural explanation.
The site now includes a handful of videos, some of which have been explained as commercial craft and some of which have been labeled as "unresolved." Each video contains a short description with an explanation by AARO of where it was captured and what characteristics the object is exhibiting.
The site also includes links to an assortment of laws, memos, congressional briefings and press releases related to UAP.
The Pentagon plans to update the website this fall to include a secure tool allowing current and former U.S. government employees, service members and contractors with direct knowledge of government programs or activities to contact AARO directly to make a report.
A mechanism for members of the general public to make reports will be announced in coming months, the defense department said.
The website comes at a time of mounting bipartisan pressure on the military and executive branch to release more information about what is known of UAP.
In July, three former military members appeared before a House Oversight subcommittee, where they regaled members of Congress with claims of mystifying flying objects, government cover-ups and a covert spaceship crash retrieval program.
In his testimony, former U.S. intelligence official David Grusch testified that he had been informed about a “multidecade” Pentagon program to recover and study crafts of non-human origin and extraterrestrial lifeforms that have crashed on earth. Though he was unable to present evidence publicly, Grusch, a member of a previous Pentagon task force that investigated UAP, also accused the government of hiding the program from Congress and misappropriating funds to operate it.
The Pentagon has repeatedly denied that such a program exists.
Following the hearing, three Republicans and one Democrat on the House subcommittee sent a letter to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., calling for the establishment of a select committee to investigate UAP further.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer also this year introduced legislation that would require the Pentagon to release any information it has gathered about the objects. First introduced in July, the legislation would also require that the defense department release information it had about nonhuman intelligences to an established review board, which would have the authority to declassify the information.

A Technological Leap Gives New Life to a 50-Year-Old UFO Photo
In the ever-evolving field of UFO research, sometimes old evidence can provide new insights, especially when modern technology enters the scene. This is precisely what happened with a decades-old photograph taken in Costa Rica, which has been thrust back into the spotlight thanks to advanced imaging techniques.
The Original Encounter
The photo’s backstory begins on September 4, 1971. Sergio Loaiza, a photographer, was flying over the Northern Highlands of Costa Rica to conduct an aerial survey for the National Geographic Institute. Loaiza’s mission was quite mundane: to capture images that would help calculate the environmental impact of a hydroelectric project. His camera, designed for mapping purposes, was set to take photographs at 13-second intervals. Everything was business as usual until Loaiza reviewed the contact sheets.
In one of the frames, he noticed an oddity—a metallic, saucer-like object suspended in the sky. What made this sighting even more perplexing was its sudden appearance and disappearance; the object was nowhere to be found in the frames taken immediately before or after the photograph in question.
Upon discovering the mysterious object in the photograph, the National Geographic Institute imposed a strict gag order on Loaiza and his team. The subject was considered so sensitive that Loaiza was explicitly forbidden from discussing it publicly. The image, estimated to show an object around 160 feet in diameter, remained under wraps for years.
However, the photograph eventually surfaced in 1979 when it was leaked to the Argentine newspaper La Nacion. UFO researchers, including the famed investigator Jacques Vallee, deemed it to be a significant piece of evidence.
A Modern Makeover
Skip forward to 2021, when Esteban Carranza, a family friend of Loaiza, obtained the original contact sheets. These were then scanned using cutting-edge technology, producing a 1.8-gigabyte image. The leap in image quality was astounding. Previously considered “smudges” or “debris” on the film were eliminated, leaving behind a clearer, saucer-shaped object.
This upgraded image discredited some of the earlier prosaic explanations that skeptics had offered. The new details seemed to rule out possibilities like a chip in the camera’s glass or a smudge during the development process. According to UFO researchers, the higher-definition scan further confirmed the object’s mysterious nature.

Een nieuwe studie heeft aangetoond dat er tussen 800.000 en 900.000 jaar geleden nog maar een duizendtal van onze menselijke voorouders over waren en dat voor een periode van maar liefst 100.000 jaar. Opmerkelijk: de terugval viel samen met een grote klimaatverandering.
De studie verscheen gisteren in het gerenommeerde wetenschappelijke tijdschrift ‘Science’. Onderzoekers gebruikten een nieuw model om de grootte van menselijke populaties in het verleden te berekenen op basis van het genetisch materiaal van meer dan 3.000 hedendaagse mensen. Ze kwamen tot een opmerkelijke conclusie.
“De resultaten toonden dat onze menselijke voorouders tussen 930.000 en 813.000 jaar geleden een ernstige afname in de populatie zagen, tot nog maar een 1.280 individuen die zich voortplantten. Dat duurde ongeveer 117.000 jaar en bracht onze menselijke voorouders tot op de rand van uitsterven”, staat er te lezen.

“Dat is een bijzonder lange periode”, beaamt professor Chris Stringer van het Natural History Museum in London bij de Britse krant ‘The Guardian’. “Het is een wonder dat we het überhaupt gehaald hebben. Voor een populatie van die omvang kan een epidemie of een vulkaanuitbarsting alleen al genoeg zijn om iedereen uit te vagen.”
De afname viel samen met grote veranderingen in het klimaat op aarde. De ijstijden gingen langer duren, de temperatuur van het oppervlaktewater in zeeën en oceanen daalde en e waren mogelijk langere periodes van droogte in Afrika en Eurazië. Er bestaan ook amper fossielen uit deze periode in Afrika en Eurazië.
Volgens professor Giorgio Manzi - antropoloog aan de Universiteit Sapienza in Rome en hoofdonderzoeker van de studie - zou de oorzaak van de populatie-afname ook een lokaal fenomeen kunnen zijn. “Misschien zaten onze menselijke voorouders bijvoorbeeld vast op een plaats in Afrika die omgeven was door woestijn”, zegt hij.
In dergelijke kleine en geïsoleerde populaties kunnen door de existentiële druk echter nieuwe soorten ontstaan, leert de evolutionaire biologie. In dit geval was dat de Homo heidelbergensis, die beschouwd wordt als directe voorouder van zowel de vroege moderne mens, de neanderthaler als de denisovamens.
Na de moeilijke periode van 100.000 jaar steeg het aantal menselijke voorouders opnieuw. Iets wat mogelijk te maken had met de ontdekking van het maken van vuur.

Guys this is awesome. A US Navy pilot recorded a silver orb that was shooting past him. It looks like he had a camera on his helmet and when he turned, it caught just three frames with the UFO in it, the first frame, only half of it, but the second and third frames the whole UAP can be seen. Extraordinary and rare footage released by the US gov on their website. The video here I post, I edited, because the original only showed the UFO in the last 3 seconds, so I enlarged it by 5X, I slowed one part by 10X to see the orb, and slowed it more to 18X to see the orb. The objects are small, probably about the size of fighter jets, but they are unknown aircraft and UFO documents in the past have stated different sizes which very form bean size silver orbs to ten floor building size UFOs. In a public meeting of NASA’s Independent Study Team on Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) on May 31, 2023, Dr. Sean Kirkpatrick, director of the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), shared a video depicting three unidentified objects recorded on infrared video in 2021 from a military range in the western United States. Analysis of the full motion video, combined with commercial flight data in the region, led AARO to assess that the objects were three separate commercial aircraft flying at a great distance from the infrared sensor. The radar tracks for commercial aircraft aligned with the objects, which were only seen as small dots due to their significant distance from the sensor.

Could it be hollow? The data seemed to suggest that the Moon’s core was less dense than its outer layers—something opposite to every other celestial body we know of. Near-Extinction of Our Human Ancestors Revealed by Genetic Research
Approximately one million years ago, the Earth was populated by a few hundred thousand or so ancient human ancestors. But about 900,000 years ago there was a sudden and dramatic crash in this population, which caused the number of archaic human breeding couples to drop down to below 1,300.
Or at least, this is the latest claim from a team of Chinese and Italian genetic researchers, who’ve just published a comprehensive historical analysis of the evolution of the human genome and its relation to past population levels in the journal Science.
To detect the genetic traces of what was nearly an extinction-level population crash, the scientists analyzed genetic data collected from 3,154 individuals in 10 modern African populations and 40 non-African populations. These people all had their genomes sequenced completely, which made it possible for the researchers to assess the differences and correlate them with long-term population patterns.
Using this form of complex analysis, the researchers were able to detect a steep decline in the breeding population of our distant human ancestors of nearly 99 percent about 930,000 years ago. By measuring the lack of diversity of genetic material passed on from that time period, they were able to calculate that the number of reproducing couples among archaic humans dropped from around 100,000 to just 1,280.
Astonishingly, human population numbers remained extremely low for about 117,000 years after that, showing little signs of improvement. Only around 813,000 years ago did they suddenly begin to rise again.

Genetic Time Travel Reveals a Dangerously Depopulated Earth
This groundbreaking genetic study was led by a pair of researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Yi-Hsuan Pan and Haipeng Li. Going in, the scientists knew that human genetic diversity was much lower than that of other primate species, which suggested some kind of depopulation event or bottleneck had occurred that had dramatically reduced genetic diversity among our most immediate Homo sapiens ancestors .
With the help of powerful computers, Pan and Li were able to untangle the web of genetic diversity amongst our human ancestors that both united and divided their 3,154 human specimens, creating a detailed timeline for when various genetic traits emerged. When they arrived at the period between 900,000 and one million years before the present, they were able to zero in on a time when the evolution of fresh diversity slowed dramatically, even catastrophically.
This is when the population crash occurred, the genetic researchers asserted. Its scope and impact would have been truly astounding.
If the conclusions of this new study are correct, it raises two important questions. Number one, what caused the astonishing population decline? And number two, how did our human ancestors manage to avoid extinction with such a low breeding population?
As for the first question, Pan and Li are virtually certain it had something to do with calamitous climate change . They hypothesize that long periods of glaciation, low temperatures in the sea, and massive global-scale droughts could have put ancient humans in grave peril. Following this thesis, perhaps a tipping point was reached where survival became incredibly difficult.
And yet, whatever happened did not lead to the total extinction of archaic humans, who eventually evolved into Homo sapiens . “The novel finding opens a new field in human evolution because it evokes many questions, such as the places where these individuals lived, how they overcame the catastrophic climate changes , and whether natural selection during the bottleneck had accelerated the evolution of the human brain,” Pan Yi-Hsuan told China Daily .
Pan and his fellow researchers explained that they believe that an improving climate might have helped spur population increases around 813,000 years ago, ending the severe demographic crisis. Before that time, humans would have only been able to survive in a few isolated outposts, presumably fairly close to the equator, where the glaciers didn’t reach and where droughts and temperatures may not have been as extreme. If they survived elsewhere they would have needed to have shelter and the ability to start and control fires, to keep themselves warm on an unusually cold Earth.
The study argues that these human ancestors survived catastrophic climate change which led to a period of glaciation.
Skeptics Address Population Crash Amongst Human Ancestors
The results of this new study are being met with some skepticism. What is being contested is that the population crash or bottleneck was a global rather than a regional event.
Janet Kelso, a computational biologist at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, noted that the genetic signal suggesting an ancient population plunge amongst human ancestors is strong only in modern-day African populations, and not in those who live elsewhere.
While she admits a stunning population decline did occur 930,000 years ago, she doubts it was experienced everywhere. The conclusions of the Chinese researchers, she told an interviewer from Science, “should probably be taken with some caution and explored further.”
Other researchers ground their skepticism in the archaeological and anthropological record. “The hypothesis of a global crash does not fit in with the archaeological and human fossil evidence,” stated Nicholas Ashton, a Paleolithic archaeologist from the British Museum who was asked to assess the new study.

Concurring with this opinion was Chris Stringer, a British anthropologist who researches human evolution. “During the period of the bottleneck, there are a number of sites that record evidence of human occupation,” he commented in a review of the new study published by the UK’s Natural History Museum . “This could mean that there wasn’t a bottleneck, but could equally mean it only had a localized impact on part of the human population.”
Responding to such objections, Li Haipeng was quick to emphasize that his team’s work is not finished and that they plan to do more research to prove their case. “These findings are just the start,” he explained. “We plan to paint a more complete picture of human evolution during this transition period to unravel the mystery of early human ancestry and evolution.”
It is likely the true nature of the event that caused the population of our human ancestors in at least some parts of the planet to decline precipitously and rapidly will never be known. If it was in fact global in nature, it would have to be classified as miraculous that our ancestors were able to avoid extinction when their population numbers were so low. And, of course, without that miracle modern humans would never have evolved.

The most profound part of the video is that this UFO has four waves of energy coming from its top, bottom, left and right. I believe these waves to be on all sides, like sides on a cube, but the UFO is not a cube. It is round, thick and disk like. Also at one point in the video, the computer tracking system detects small objects coming out of the UFO. Notice the white squares that the computer puts around those tiny drone objects. There’s No Wind on the Moon, So How Does Dust Shift and Swirl So Quickly?
The last place to look for windstorms is on the Moon. Yet, it has swirls on its surface that look like the wind put them there. Since there’s no atmosphere on the Moon, planetary scientists had to look for another cause. It turns out there’s a connection to local magnetic anomalies and an interplay with lunar topography.
Swirls are albedo patterns on the Moon’s surface and they’ve kept planetary scientists debating their cause for years. They’re visible from Earth, although it wasn’t until 1966 that the NASA Lunar Orbiter II managed to get a clear image of one. One of the largest, Reiner Gamma, is visible through an amateur telescope.
A new study by scientists at the Planetary Science Institute, led by planetary scientist Deborah Domingue, examined the texture of the surface where these swirls appear. They looked at a spot in Mare Ingenii using photometric analysis to determine the cause. That technique takes into account how material scatters light and how those scattering properties change as the illumination (angle of the sunlight to the surface) and viewing (position of your spacecraft) geometries change.

Changing Ideas about Lunar Swirls
Over the years, lunar observers have come up with several explanations for these weird markings. Cometary impacts might send swirls of dust across the surface. Such collisions might also explain the magnetic anomalies associated with the swirls.
It’s also highly likely that the solar wind plays a role. It’s a frequent occurrence and could explain why some swirls seem to change more quickly over time. In this case, a magnetic anomaly protects light-colored regolith (lunar surface materials), which could be exposed silicates. This explains the swirling pattern, as shielded material would be brighter than materials outside the magnetic field. However, the spectral properties don’t always match those of shielded materials.

It could be that magnetic fields segregate and trap electrostatically levitated dust. It’s the smallest size of all lunar dust and made of minerals brighter than the larger sizes of dust grains. Those bigger ones are more difficult to move electrostatically. The darker dust includes small inclusions of nanometer-scale iron. It’s more likely to get magnetically separated and deposited in the dark areas of the swirls. Ironically, one way to produce this nanometer-scale iron is by solar wind radiation.
Related to that is an idea that says weak electric fields created by interactions with the magnetic anomalies and solar wind plasma could attract or repel fine dust particles. Another theory, proposed by scientists in 2022 says that topography may also play a role in the placement of the swirls.

Using Photometric Analysis
What the team found with their photometric analysis study is that the grain-to-grain roughness was similar across the swirl region. However, the soil in the dark lanes has grains with a more complicated structure. In addition, they found that the composition between the bright and dark areas is different, following the expectations from dust collection and segregation.
Domingue thinks they may have a better feel for the origins of these strange swirls now. “The evidence, which includes recent correlation of topographic lows with the bright areas of the swirls, tells a story that more than one process is involved in their formation”, she said. “We definitely see evidence that the bright areas are less radiated, but this doesn’t explain all the properties of the swirls. Something else is operating, and the textures suggest dust collection and segregation are part of the tale.”

There is a theory that in the past, our planet was visited by alien representatives who shared their knowledge and technologies with people, so maybe they donated incredible technologies thousands of years ago, but then these technologies brought humanity to the brink of extinction.
Some people claim that our ancestors used so advanced technologies that in our time, it is difficult to imagine them. But some of the modern technologies may have been borrowed from the past, although almost no one knows about it. You may have heard of the ancient nuclear war hypothesis or ancient flying vehicles, which can also be found in ancient texts. It is said that our ancestors could even move in space and had knowledge about the universe that surpasses all modern knowledge.
A 450-page manuscript was examined in 1963 by Romanian engineer Doru Todericiu in Sibiu’s national archive (former Hermannstadt). Todericiu examined the manuscript’s scientific and technological substance before classifying it as a work on various artillery and ballistics difficulties, despite the fact that it had previously been known as such. He learned that Conrad Haas, the author of the manuscript’s third section, had written about some amazing concepts related to rocketry.
The Sibiu manuscript does not fit into the present history, so it draws increased attention. There aren’t many details available concerning Conrad Haas’s life. He was born not far from Vienna in Dornbach. He worked for the Imperial court of Vienna as an artillery guard and commissioned officer. He most likely traveled to Transylvania in 1551 with Imperial forces to fulfill this role, when he took the position of chief of the artillery camp at the Hermannstadt arsenal.
He penned the manuscript between 1529 and 1569, and it appears to contain, among other things, the earliest explanation of the multistage rocket’s basic operating principle. He talks about bundling rockets, stabilizing fins, and employing liquid fuel as well as describing and showing two and three-stage rockets.
The Sibiu manuscript is written in German. Many people believe that it was written using some even more ancient texts. The manuscript texts describe in detail the principles of rocketry, and there are also drawings of models of space three-stage rocket. The document contains a description of technologies for combining fireworks with weapons and even the construction of a hang glider, as well as instructions for creating fuel mixtures as liquid rocket fuel.

What’s more, there are references to flights to the moon. According to researchers from Romania, the manuscript contains stories about a man who was able to get to the Earth’s satellite due to a unique flying machine. There are also descriptions of prehistoric fuel, which consisted of several rare elements. The rockets of this type were later launched at Cape Kennedy and used by cosmonauts in the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs.
It looks like this chronicler visited the future world. The handwritten text of Sibiu is quite long as it consists of 450 pages. It is known that the Sibiu manuscript is genuine and the experts do not doubt this, but they are in no hurry to comment on the contents of this text.
It could be claimed that this case is just science fiction if researchers of anticity did not find other strange texts and technologies. In addition, multiple artifacts found by archaeologists confirm that our ancestors were much more civilized than modern historians imagine. Manuscripts such as Sibiu have the potential to change the way people think about our history.

It remains a mystery whether Haas succeeded in using his designs and bringing them to life. However, there are people who claim that a rocket was launched in Sibiu in 1550. It is believed that Conrad Haas created the first rocket. According to Haas, it took him more than 25 years to develop a unique aircraft. The biggest challenge, in this case, was the search for a fuel that would be sufficient to lift it into the air.
The main focus of the paper is the fuel issue. In addition to the conventional powder components of saltpeter, sulfur, and coal, Haas also used “brandy”, with the help of which the thrust development of the rockets was to be increased: “Again, take a little crushed powder and pour in enough brandy to make a little dough. Although Conrad Haas designed weapons to kill, he secretly believed in basic human values. His basic humanistic attitude is particularly clear from the following statement: “But my advice is more peace and no war, leave the rifles under the roof, so the bullet won’t be fired, the powder won’t be burned wet, so the prince kept his money, the gun master his life; that is the advice Conrad Haas does.”
The technical characteristics of the rocket are similar to those of modern vehicles. It was made of wooden parts covered with a layer of special stone dust, which was supposed to protect the body from burning when rubbed against the air. Contemporaries note that in the 16th century, researchers did not know the intricacies of physical processes in the air, which is why scientists could receive information from aliens.
In addition, from his youth, he was engaged in research on ancient writings found in the territory of modern Egypt. A mission to the Moon could take place in 1550. But there is no documentary evidence to support all these claims.
Lady Sala Shabazz, the founder of the Black Inventions Museum who passed away on March 28, 2002 said once: “… Unfortunately, the individuals who are commissioned to write textbooks many times exhibited prejudice and omitted other historical information. In an effort to cover large spans of time, they have briefed history and left out so many other important facts and that’s something that many people have not been aware of.”
The city of Sibiu is known to many of us because it is the birthplace of Hermann Oberth, considered to be one of three fathers of rocketry and modern astronautics. Additionally, there is a dedicated document (ID 19770026087) in the NASA archives about the Sibiu manuscript.
Nick Pope, who previously ran the UK government’s UFO project, was reflecting on findings by Harvard’s ‘alien-hunting’ professor Avi Loeb that suggest small spherules recovered from a meteorite originated from beyond the solar system – the first time any such materials have been studied.
During two weeks in June, Professor Loeb led a team of scientists on an expedition in the Pacific Ocean to find the spherules, formed when the meteorite IM1 passed through Earth’s atmosphere and crashed into the sea on January 8, 2014.
Hundreds of spherules were collected from the crash site and analysed alongside control materials to determine whether the materials were of local origin.
However, the rare abundance of beryllium (Be), lanthanum (La), and uranium (U), named BeLaU, not only suggest the spherules aren’t from Earth, but show they are unlike any other meteorite seen before.
Professor Loeb’s study has not yet been peer reviewed, but writing on his Medium blog he said: ‘Wonderful news! For the first time in history, scientists analysed materials from a metre-size object that originated from outside the solar system.’

Last year, US Space Command, part of the Department of Defense, confirmed IM1 was of interstellar origin due to its ‘unbound hyperbolic orbit’ – meaning it was not orbiting around the Sun, but merely passing by.
However, neither the government nor Professor Loeb have confirmed whether or not IM1 is natural in origin.
Discussing the spherules’ make-up, the professor said: ‘A more exotic possibility is that this unfamiliar abundance pattern, with uranium being nearly a thousand times more abundant than the standard solar system value, may reflect an extraterrestrial technological origin.’
Speaking to Metro.co.uk after the findings were released, broadcaster and journalist Mr Pope said: ‘While I’m not a scientist, this appears to be a tremendous discovery.
‘We already knew – from US Space Command – that IM1 was almost certainly of interstellar origin, and the fact that the anomalous results were obtained in runs [areas] that crossed IM1’s calculated path, and not in the control samples, seems to confirm the material is indeed interstellar – as does the unusual composition of the spherules in terms of beryllium, lanthanum and uranium.
‘This sounds like a potentially Nobel Prize-winning discovery in and of itself, and while further analysis will be needed to determine if the material is natural or artificial, the latter would prove that there are other civilizations out there, which would make this the most significant scientific discovery in history.
‘While we’ll have to await peer review, it does seem that this is a potentially world-changing discovery that gives us a tantalising glimpse of what a planet outside our solar system might be like.’

IM1, also known as CNEOS 2014-01-08 by Nasa’s Centre for Near Earth Object Studies, was detected by the Catalina Sky Survey travelling at 28 miles per second, much faster than other meteors.
Speaking earlier this month, Professor Loeb said the metallic beads, which measure up to 0.7mm in diameter, could be alien technology.
‘There is a chance that it’s artificial – that it’s a spacecraft,’ he said.
The professor’s interest in interstellar bodies was initially piqued by the arrival of Oumuamua, a curious cigar-shaped object that did not appear to look or behave like a normal comet.

Professor Loeb proposed it may be a ‘light sail’, a thin metallic sheet that acts like a sail, but using sunlight instead of wind, designed by an alien civilisation.
More recently however others have suggested that while Oumuamua was also of interstellar origin, hailing from outside the solar system, it was most likely a comet.
