Het is een lief, aanhankelijk hondje, dat zich op een week snel aan ons heeft aangepast. Ze is heel vinnig en nieuwsgierig, een heel ander hondje dan Noleke.

De James Webb Ruimtetelescoop heeft het adembenemende beeld van een uitgestrekt sterrenveld met een sterrenstelsel en een bolvormige sterrenhoop in de schijnwerpers gezet.
In de afbeelding is het onregelmatige sterrenstelsel NGC 6822 te zien, dankzij de Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) gemonteerd op de James Webb, een telescoop die gezamenlijk wordt geëxploiteerd door NASA, ESA en CSA.
Met het infraroodbeeld is het ook mogelijk om de talrijke sterren in dit dichtbevolkte veld te observeren. De helderste sterren verschijnen in lichtblauw en cyaan, terwijl de zwakkere sterren zich tonen in warmere kleuren.
Bovendien bevindt zich links van het midden een heldere blauwe ‘bol’ die opvalt als een bolvormige sterrenhoop.
Several years ago I began researching the phenomenon of ball lightning since it comes up so frequently in discussions of the UFO phenomenon. (Or unidentified anomalous phenomena, UAP, as the U.S. government insists we say these days.) In recent months I have gone back to investigate some of the more current research material and reports available on this topic and I'll provide some updates on both the historical and newer information that has become available here.
It's worth noting that "ball-shaped" UFOs (as ball lightning is typically described) are among the most common sightings reported. This is no longer just an anecdotal assumption. The Pentagon's All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) website confirms this in a recently published morphology chart. They even provide a verified and still unidentified video of one of them filmed by a drone over the Middle East. Those "orbs" are frequently described as being silver or metallic in appearance, but recently advanced theories suggest that in some cases, particularly at night, they might exhibit some sort of field around their surface, giving them the appearance of fire or even electrical "lightning."
People have been reporting sightings of such objects for quite some time. Rather than being a recent phenomenon, something fitting the description of ball lightning was first reported in the 12th century, written by Benedictine monk Gervase of Christ Church Cathedral Priory, Canterbury in 1195. Suggesting that the phenomenon has an affinity for religious institutions (or just that churches had most of the people who were literate back then), ball lightning reportedly struck the church of St. Pancras in Widecombe-on-the-Moor, England during a severe thunderstorm in 1638. Church records indicate that the fireball came through a window, knocked the minister off of his feet, and singed his clothing. While it melted metal around him, it left the wood of the church untouched. The event was considered to be potentially miraculous.
Ball lightning isn't only seen over land. Ships at sea have reported similar sightings and even alarming damage for centuries. In 1726, while sailing along the Gulf Coast off of Florida, the sloop Catherine and Maryreported being struck by a ball of fire from the sky that "blew the mast into a thousand pieces." One witness wrote that three men were struck down with one of them being killed. Similarly, in 1809, ship's records from the HMS Warren Hastings told of three fireballs striking the ship, killing two of the crew. Thunderstorms and rough seas were reported in both cases.
During my initial investigation, I sought out some sort of scientifically verifiable, plausible explanation for such a phenomenon that wouldn't involve UFOs or anything paranormal. And many scientists have engaged in similar pursuits dating back to at least the 1940s. Since it is described as "lightning," I interviewed one of the chief meteorologists for NBC News. Could this actually be lightning as we currently understand it? He pointed me to the current description of ball lightning offered by the American Meteorological Society. They are willing to admit that ball lightening is "considered controversial due to the lack of unambiguous physical evidence" and the exact mechanisms for how it might take place are "unknown." He further confessed that "Not a lot is known about it.”
That comment speaks volumes because we actually do know quite a bit about lightning and electricity in general after centuries of study. NOAA can mostly accurately predict which storms are more or less likely to produce lightning within a window of a few hours. We know that "balls of electricity" will not "float" through a glass window if there is any less resistive path because glass is such an amazing insulator. The reason that "ball lightning" is unverifiable is that it doesn't act like lightning or other typical electronic activity.
That's not to say that scientific investigations into the phenomenon haven't continued. I reviewed a more recent, peer-reviewed paper from M. Sanduloviciu and E. Lozneanu of the Department of Plasma Physics at the University of Ias in Romania, titled, "Ball lightning as a self-organization Phenomenon."
In a laboratory, they were able to reproduce the effect impressively and they included many photographs and explanatory charts. But they almost all require very controlled conditions and the introduction of an electrical anode. Happening in nature, they described it as a "sudden injection of matter and energy in a well-located hot plasma generated by a lightning stroke."
This ties back nicely to my original findings, indicating that so-called ball lightning is typically associated with fireballs that are observed immediately following a lightning strike on the ground in an area where combustible materials are located. You can see a video of such an event here. Commercially created fireballs are also common. But they all share certain properties in common. They are the obvious combustion of fuels and they typically are very short in duration and they travel in predictable ways, generally upward. They do not zoom around and track over the wings of fighter jets like the foo fighters of yore.
So are we any closer to knowing if ball lightning is "real" today? If we are assuming that the phrase means that people are seeing balls of light doing remarkable things in the skies, there is plenty of evidence to indicate that it certainly is. But it's a phrase of convenience. Is it actually "lightning" as we currently understand that meteorological phenomenon? Almost certainly not. That's not how electricity works. But there's something going on and plenty of evidence continues to accumulate.
Reports are piling up to this day. The Weather Channel saw fit to publish a video of one example from 2013. CBS News in Sacramento California published a highly intriguing video in 2021. Some other relatively recent reports include one from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where a witness reported a green ball of light hovering outside of his house for approximately ten seconds, whereupon it exploded. The power to his house was knocked out until the next morning. A second from Jordan, New York involved a glowing red ball seen inside a person's house that hovered in the air for more than three minutes.
Those last two are related because they are part of a collection of sightings being assembled by a team at New Mexico Tech University labs. They set up a site specifically for people to report ball lightinng sightings a few years ago and they have many examples. Their goal is to take a scientific approach, matching witness testimony to meteorological data from the time and location reported, seeking patterns. They hope to identify the conditions most likely to spawn ball lightning, hopefully increasing the chances of capturing it on film in the future.
So what are these flaming balls? Personally, I think they look very much like UFOs, but that simply means that we haven't yet identified precisely what they are or where they come from. But all of the data thus far suggests that they really aren't "lightning" and we have a very solid understanding of how that natural phenomenon operates.

The Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser III is one of the most intriguing artifacts of the Neo-Assyrian Empire. Discovered by Sir Austen Henry Layard in 1846, it is one of only two complete Neo-Assyrian obelisks yet discovered. This perfectly preserved monument commemorates 31 years of King Shalmaneser III’s reign, who ruled from 858–824 BCE. It was erected as a public monument in 825 BCE, in the central square of Nimrud (biblical Calah, or ancient Kalhu), located in modern-day Iraq. After its discovery, the object was transferred to the British Museum where it still resides.
The four-sided obelisk is made of black limestone, and stands just under 2 meters (6 ½ feet) tall. It has five vertically arranged panels on each side, adding up to a total of 20 panels. They depict five different subdued kings, bringing tribute and prostrating before King Shalmaneser. The tributes from each subdued king occupies four panels around the monument and is described by a cuneiform script above them.

The really intriguing elements of this obelisk can be seen on the third panel from the top, which depicts the tributes brought by an unnamed ruler of “Musri”. Earlier, historians used to think that Musri was a kingdom in northern Iraq, but now that it is accepted that it was a Neo-Assyrian term for Egypt, phonetically similar to the Hebrew “Mizraim”, Classical Arabic “Misr” and Egyptian Arabic “Masr”. So, what did this subdued king of Egypt (not necessarily the pharaoh), bring as tribute to Shalmaneser III, sometime around the 9th century BCE? Human-animal hybrid beings, which are depicted alongside other easily recognizable animals! The hybrids are smaller than humans, and are held in chains like pets.

This panel shows a pair of human-animal hybrid beings, held by chains. Both the creatures have human-like head and arms, but their hind limbs are like that of an animal, and they also have a tail. The creatures appear to be capable of standing or walking on their hind limbs. One might think that they look like a miniature version of a sphinx, which, of course, is a startling thought, for haven’t we been told that the sphinx is a “mythological” creature?

This panel shows three human-animal hybrids, of which two are held by ropes. These hybrids seem to be quite comfortable walking on their hind legs, and are very human-like except for their long tail. One of the hybrids is perched on the shoulder of a man, which indicates that they have a friendly attitude towards humans and can be trained. They resemble the satyrs of Greek art, and the vanaras of Indian legends, which, once again makes us wonder how so-called mythical beings could have been offered as a tribute by a king of Egypt in the 9th century BCE.
It is important to remember that the Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser III was a royal monument which was meant for the express purpose of recording the various tributes that King Shalmaneser had received during his reign. It was probably executed by the royal scribes, working hand-in-hand with the highly skilled royal sculptors. This was not the place where the sculptor could indulge in flights of fancy, and employ religious symbols and metaphorical devices. Nor could a sculptor afford to attach a tail to a prisoner, simply because he had a personal dislike for that person. The Neo-Assyrian kings were not known for their sense of humour, and any deviation or practical joke would have been severely dealt with.
What I am trying to get at is that, if a royal monument shows human-animal hybrid beings being received as tribute, then it is very likely that they were. And it is only because such creatures do not exist today that we find this thought so incredible.
In fact, there is documented evidence that bizarre, human-animal hybrid beings existed in some parts of the world till the late first millennium BCE. One of the interesting accounts was written by a Greek physician called Ctesias, who served as a doctor at the court of the king Artaxerxes II of Persia. He wrote a book called Indica, which was based on various stories brought to the Persian court by visitors and travelers from India and other parts of the world. Pliny, the Elder, quoting Ctesias, writes that,
“Ctesias informs us, that among these same Ethiopians, there is an animal found, which he calls the mantichora; it has a triple row of teeth, which fit into each other like those of a comb, the face and ears of a man, and azure eyes, is of the colour of blood, has the body of the lion, and a tail ending in a sting, like that of the scorpion. Its voice resembles the union of the sound of the flute and the trumpet; it is of excessive swiftness, and is particularly fond of human flesh.”[1]
Ctesias also wrote of similar hybrid animals being found in the mountainous regions of India. Pliny quoting Ctesias in Natural History, writes that,
“There are also satyrs in the mountains in the east of India...this is an extremely swift animal, sometimes going on all fours and sometimes standing upright as they run, like human beings; because of their speed only the old ones or the sick are caught.”[2]
The satyr in the above description, could, of course, refer to the Mande Burung, which is the counterpart of the Yeti that lives in the mountains of eastern India, in the state of Meghalaya. What it most certainly does not describe is the “monkey”, which is an animal that everyone in India is familiar with, and unlikely to evoke any interest.
The accounts of Ctesias indicate that human-animal hybrids, like those depicted on the Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser III, may have existed in Ethiopia and India around the 5th century BCE, and therefore, could have been given as a tribute by a king of Egypt in the 9th century BCE.
Another interesting incident was recorded by the Greek historian Plutarch in the 2nd century CE. Plutarch wrote in the Life of Sulla that the soldiers of the Roman general Sulla had captured a satyr sleeping during a military campaign in Greece in 89 BCE.[3] Sulla’s men brought the satyr to him and he attempted to interrogate it, but it spoke in an unintelligible sound, which was a cross between the neighing of a horse and the bleating of a goat.
It appears from accounts such as these that, satyrs may not be imaginary creatures, as is commonly believed, but could have been hybrid beings that lived till the beginning of the Christian era and became extinct soon afterwards, as the environmental conditions continued to change. Millions of animals have become extinct over time, so why not sphinxes and satyrs? Or, perhaps, they did not become extinct, but retreated inside mountain caves and subterranean grottoes, where they are simply biding their time until conditions become favorable for their emergence?
The question is, if these creatures actually lived in the past, how did they evolve? We know that human DNA is not compatible with that of animals, which means we can pretty much rule out any involvement of humans in this matter. What do the ancient texts and traditions have to say about it?
When it comes to the sphinx, there is not much to go on, especially with respect to their origin. We know that the sphinx was always regarded as a protector or guardian of a sacred sanctuary, and was generally depicted in pairs on either side of the entrance to a temple, palace or tomb. This custom was consistently followed across the world, wherever sphinxes are depicted in art and architecture - in Egypt, Greece, Mesopotamia, India and South-east Asia.
With regards to their appearance, there are slight differences between cultures. In Greece, the sphinx was generally female, and had a pair of wings. In Mesopotamia, the sphinx was called lamassu. It combined the characteristics of a man and a bull, and was typically depicted with wings. Colossal statues of the lamassu were placed in pairs at the entrances of the royal palaces and cities. Interestingly, on many cylinder seals, the lamassu was depicted in an upright, standing position, adoring the stylized “sacred tree”, which indicates that they played an important role in the religious life of the people.

In India, the sphinx was called purusha-mriga or kimpurusha. It used to be depicted standing on four legs at the entrances of temples, as well as in an upright position on two limbs in front of a Shiva-linga. The Shiva-linga, which is a stone pillar symbolizing the god Shiva, is the axis-mundi of the world, and is conceptually equivalent to the “sacred tree” depicted on the Mesopotamian seals. It is apparent that the sphinx, in an upright standing posture, looks quite similar to the hybrid creatures depicted on the Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser III.

Unfortunately, there are very few stories associated with the sphinx, because of which we don’t know anything about it origins or parentage. In case of the satyrs, however, a lot more information is available, which hints at a genetic experiment carried out by the gods, sometime prior to 7000 BCE, in order to produce these strange, hybrid creatures.
In Greek art, the satyrs were shown with the ears and tails of a horse, but their face was like that of humans, and they sported long beards. In fact, apart from their ears and tail, everything about the satyrs is completely human-like. They walked upright like humans, played the aulos (double flute), lyre and other musical instruments, drank wine, and danced around merrily in the entourage of Dionysus, along with the maenads i.e. dancing nymphs. I have no doubt that if a satyr were to cover his ears with long, flowing hair, and dress up in a formal suit, he would be unrecognizable in any modern-day orchestra. Who knows, they might already be lingering amongst us!

Pan was the leader of the satyrs in the Dionysian retinue, and he was the general of Dionysus’s army during his military expeditions. He had precocious musical talent, being the inventor of the “pan flute”. An Orphic Hymn to Pan states: “Only at evening, as he (Pan) returns from the chase, he sounds his note, playing sweet and low on his pipes of reed: not even she could excel him in melody —that bird who in flower-laden spring pouring forth her lament utters honey-voiced song amid the leaves.”[4] Interestingly, Pan was regarded as a demigod, being the son of Hermes, and he was worshipped in caves and grottoes as the god of the wilderness, pastures, groves, flocks, music and fertility.
The satyrs of Greek art correspond to the vanaras of Indian legends, who accompanied Rama on his military campaigns. The vanaras had monkey-like faces covered with beard, hairy bodies, and a long tail. But they walked upright like human beings, and were similar to humans in their speech and customs. The most powerful of the vanaras was Hanuman. Like Pan, he was a demigod, being the son of the wind-god Pavan, and was therefore known as “Pavan-putra Hanuman.” Hanuman was also musically gifted, being a sitar player par-excellence, and one of the four styles of Indian (Hindustani) classical music is named after him.

When the noted scholar and philologist, Sir William Jones, came to Calcutta, India, in 1783, as a Supreme Court judge, he immediately noticed the stark correlations between Dionysus and Rama, and wrote an article elaborating on these connections. A number of Greek historians had written that Dionysus had been born on a mountain of India named Meros, which was located close to the city called Nysa, from where his name Dionysus (God of Nysa) had originated.
It appears that Rama and his retinue of vanaras had gone westwards, propagating a mystery religion in which god-communion was achieved through ritual ecstasy. This is not surprising, considering that Rama was a great devotee of the god Shiva, and many elements of the Dionysian rites – such as the long processions, consumption of intoxicants, ritual dances, the use of serpents and phallic cult objects – are still practiced by the devotees of Shiva.
After the conquests of Alexander, the Greek and Roman historians - Pliny, Solinus and Arrian - wrote about Indian customs and culture. Their writings indicate that the Indians counted their kings from 6776 BCE, starting with a ruler whom they identified with the Greek Dionysus or Roman Bacchus. Since we can be quite certain that Dionysus or Bacchus is indeed Rama, it means that the satyrs or vanaras were roaming the world since that remote period.
This brings us to the big question: how did this strange race of vanaras originate? As per the Ramayana, the gods, sages and other celestial beings mated with the animals of the forests to create powerful progenies who would be able to assist Rama in his fight against the rakshasas i.e. giants. For instance,
“When Brahma addressed them thus, those gods agreed to his order and accordingly started to parent sons in the semblance of monkeys.”[5] “Thus the gods have procreated many thousands of such valorous and guise changing monkeys who with their immeasurable strength and bravery are manifest for the elimination of the decahedral demon Ravana.”[6]
So, the gods were involved in the creation of the race of vanaras. As to who these gods were, I shall not speculate here, other than to say that the accounts of most native cultures portray them as “humanoid” beings of great power who came to the earth in very ancient times, the most likely place of their origin being the Pleiades star cluster. But did the gods actually procreate with the forest animals for the purpose of creating the vanaras or did they use advanced genetic manipulation techniques? Probably the latter, for that is the method that the gods had adopted for the creation of human beings, as per the Mesopotamian epic of creation, the Enuma Elish.
The Enuma Elish relates that the gods lived on the earth in the beginning, and toiled hard to make the rivers, lakes, mountains and other features of the ecosystem, so that our planet could become habitable. After Marduk slayed Tiamat, the monstrous serpent of the oceans, he wanted to create man, so that man could take over the labors of the gods and the gods could rest. Enki (or Ea), the Lord of Underworld, then created man from the blood of Qingu, who was one of the underworld divinities who had instigated Tiamat to rebel against the gods. These are the exact lines from the Enuma Elish:
27 The Igigi, the great gods, answered him (Marduk), 28 That is, Lugaldimmerankia, the counsellor of the gods, the lord, 29 "Qingu is the one who instigated warfare, 30 Who made Tiamat rebel and set battle in motion." 31 They bound him, holding him before Ea (Enki), 32 They inflicted the penalty on him and severed his blood-vessels. 33 From his blood he (Ea) created mankind, 34 On whom he imposed the service of the gods, and set the gods free.[7]
Although the text doesn’t say so explicitly, it is quite likely that Enki extracted Qingu’s DNA from his blood and re-engineered it to create human beings. In which case, a similar process may have been followed for the creation of the vanaras, satyrs, sphinxes and many other kinds of magical, hybrid beings that are depicted in ancient art and architecture.
We are prone to regard these hybrid beings of ancient art as mythical or imaginary creatures since we don’t see them around today, but it is quite possible that the DNA of these hybrid beings degraded over time due to the accumulation of harmful genetic mutations, and as a result they slowly became extinct, or retreated to some hidden location. However, as the Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser III shows, some of these hybrid creatures were still around in the 9th century BCE. They had shrunk in size by then, and were caught by humans and possibly trained as pets. On the calm waters of Lake Monroe, Indiana, an unsuspecting boater had an experience that would leave even the most hardened skeptics scratching their heads. The date? September 23, 2023. This is not the the website that was released to the public last month called the AARO, this is the US boarder patrol UAP site they just made and they released a dozen videos silently on the site. In the final extract from his gripping book about the chequered history of the ejection seat, John Nichol — who was taken prisoner by Saddam Hussein's troops after his Tornado jet was shot down over Iraq during the first Gulf War — tells the intriguing story of an American pilot who disappeared without trace over the North Sea.
At RAF Binbrook in Lincolnshire, U.S. pilot Captain Bill Schaffner was a popular addition to the ranks of 5 Squadron. He arrived there in 1970 to learn to fly one-man Lightning fighter planes as part of an exchange programme between the U.S. Air Force and the RAF. With him were wife Linda and small children David, Glennon and baby Michael.
Life on a Cold War airbase in those days revolved around the ever-present threat from the Soviet Union. All personnel were required to be fully prepared for such an eventuality, and in September that year, a major exercise began to test a squadron's reaction to a Soviet attack on the UK.
British aircraft posing as Soviet bombers were out over the North Sea, threatening to stray into territorial waters. 5 Squadron's challenge was to find them, shadow them and warn them off, or, if necessary, practise shooting them down.
All day, Lightnings roared airborne to challenge 'the invaders', then headed back into Binbrook, tyres squealing as they landed, to refuel and then take off again, straight back into the fray.

It was evening before Schaffner was scrambled, ordered to his fighter, XS894. The weather had begun to deteriorate as he climbed into the cockpit, strapped into his ejection seat and sat stationary on a taxiway until he was allocated the call sign 'Charlie 45'. Then he blasted off the runway, climbing to 10,000ft over the North Sea.
Three minutes and five seconds later he checked in with the radar station at RAF Patrington in Yorkshire, from where the exercise was being run, to be told that his mission was to shadow and shepherd a four-engine Avro Shackleton that was posing as a Soviet bomber and heading towards the Yorkshire coast. This was despite shadowing and shepherding being a manoeuvre he had practised but not actually been cleared to perform.
It was also now getting dark, and he had only notched up 18 hours of night flying on the Lightning. There was a further complication: the speed of a Shackleton was 185mph, whereas the slowest a Lightning could be flown in this type of operation was 230mph. This was going to be tricky, testing to the full his flying skills on an aircraft that was new to him.
The night was pitch-black, the weather had worsened, and, as he concentrated on shadowing the slow-moving aircraft, Schaffner probably could no longer see the horizon. For a Lightning pilot with such limited experience, the workload in the cockpit was reaching breaking point.
To make a challenging situation even worse, his task was then dramatically upgraded. His mission now was not just to follow the Shackleton but to intercept it and, if necessary, escort it to RAF Binbrook.
He dropped to 5,000 feet and followed an instruction to increase his speed to 0.95 Mach (728mph) towards the 'target', which was now just 28 nautical miles away. A Lightning had phenomenal acceleration. In seconds it could be travelling at well over 12 miles a minute. He would be on top of the target before he knew it. He needed to slow down.
Patrington reminded Schaffner to keep a sharp lookout. 'Roger, I'm watching 'em,' he replied.
At 9.42, just 12 minutes after he had blasted off from RAF Binbrook, he got another set of instructions. 'If target aircraft approaches within three miles of the UK coastline, it is to be directed to land at Waddington [another RAF base in Lincolnshire].'
There was no response.

What was also worrying was that the controller could no longer see Schaffner on his radar screen and was growing increasingly frantic. A succession of urgent radio calls rang out. 'Charlie 45, Charlie 45, this is Patrington, do you read? Over.'
Only the hiss and crackle of static filled the radio. Schaffner and his Lightning fighter had disappeared.
Listening in to all this, RAF pilot Chris Coville went to look for his friend, flying low over the water, but was unable to see anything. 'The penny began to drop,' Coville (later Air Marshal Sir Christopher Coville) recalls. 'Something terrible had happened to Bill. It was obvious that he had crashed into the sea. But there was still hope.'
A lifeboat and an RAF Marine Branch rescue vessel were alerted and on their way to the area, eyes peeled in the darkness for a dinghy floating on the sea. 'If he had ejected and triggered his survival beacon it would transmit a signal to allow rescuers to home in on him.'
But there were no bleeps from Schaffner's survival radio. With every passing minute, Coville's feeling of dread increased.
'I landed back at base to see the padre in the crew room, never a welcome sight.' Minutes later the padre and the station commander were knocking on Linda Schaffner's door with the news that every airman's wife lives in dread of.
Linda recalled an RAF doctor arriving with a box of Valium to calm her down. But nothing could take the edge off her mounting grief. 'I was in total shock. I was told Bill was probably dead. But what did probably mean? How could they know? I stayed up most of the night, hoping, praying, that they would find him. Every time I heard a noise outside, I rushed to the window to see if it was him.'
Discussing with me the events of that day over 50 years ago, Coville retrieves his RAF logbook and reads the entry aloud: '8th September 1970 — Captain Bill Schaffner lost.' There was no sign of his aircraft. There was no sign of him. It was not known if he had ejected.
A week later there was still no sign of Bill or his Lightning. He had to be presumed dead. His wife and children went back to the US. On the flight home, one thought nagged away at Linda. Bill's body had still not been recovered. Had he managed to eject? Was there perhaps a scintilla of hope?
A month later, a Royal Navy minesweeper in the North Sea picked up a bulky object on its sonar, five miles north-east of Flamborough Head, lying in mud on the seabed, about 100 feet from the surface. A diver went down and reported back. It was Schaffner's Lightning, its back broken but otherwise remarkably undamaged.
Then from the seabed the diver relayed something very strange: 'Cockpit closed. Looking in now. It's empty. No sign of the pilot.'
His plane was found on the seabed, its ejection seat in place, the cockpit canopy closed – but minus a body...
Only one thing was for sure. Schaffner had hit the water at 180mph. The exact point of impact had frozen on the altimeter and the air speed indicator
The plane was winched to the surface. Photographs taken at the time show the Lightning's distinctive swept-back wings, with the aircraft's registration, XS894, on the underside. Inspection confirmed the top canopy was closed but the cockpit was empty. The ejection seat was still in the aircraft with the harness undone. The mystery deepened — what had happened that night? And where was Bill?
An official Board of Inquiry, set up the day after the accident, went to work, with a host of difficult questions. Had the ejection seat failed, or had the pilot not pulled the handle? And if not, why not? Where was the body? If he had managed to unstrap and climb out, why was the cockpit canopy closed?
Only one thing was for sure. Schaffner had hit the water at 180mph. The exact point of impact had frozen on the altimeter and the air speed indicator.
Over in the US, Linda Schaffner received an official letter. 'This is to advise you that the aircraft which your husband Captain William Schaffner was flying was recovered from the North Sea. However, his body was not inside the aircraft. The whereabouts is undetermined at this time. I will advise you immediately of any new developments. I extend my deepest sympathy.'
Linda was bewildered. 'It was inexplicable. Where was Bill? I had no husband to bury and no information about what happened to him. How was he not in the aircraft? Had he ejected? I couldn't understand it.' No one could.
The years went by, Linda remarried and she and her boys had happy lives. But in 1999, the youngest, Mike, now a 29-year-old, was as puzzled as ever. 'As a teenager, I remembered day-dreaming that my father had somehow survived and was suffering from amnesia somewhere.
'Or perhaps he had been picked up by a Soviet submarine and was languishing in a gulag. As an adult, I put those thoughts away. I'd never known him beyond his military mementos that my mom kept in an old red box.'
Killing time one day, he went online, idly looking for any references to his father. The family had been promised the Board of Inquiry's accident report but had never received it. Mike had no idea it had been completed back in June 1972, and then restricted for security reasons.
'About ten pages into my search I saw the words 8 September 1970 and RAF Binbrook. It was the date my dad died, and his base. I was astonished.' He clicked on the link and up popped a 1992 article in the Grimsby Telegraph — 'The Riddle of Foxtrot 94'.
It claimed that 'a young USAF pilot, Captain Bill Schaffner, had been scrambled in his Lightning, along with six RAF fighters from other bases, three tankers and a Shackleton early warning aircraft to intercept a 'mystery contact'.' The reference was to an unidentified flying object — a UFO.
Mike couldn't quite believe what he was reading. This was the first real information he had found about the accident. There was a whole clutch of stories about his dad, each one more astonishing than the last, all based on the sleuthing of UFO hunters.
Incredibly, one ran what it claimed was an official transcript of Bill's final radio calls with his flight controllers. 'I have visual contact, repeat visual contact. I'm alongside it now, maybe 600 feet. It's a conical shape. Jeez, that's bright. It hurts my eyes to look at it for more than a few seconds.'
The article claimed Schaffner now saw an object 'the size of a large football, like it's made of glass, bobbing up and down' at the back end of the mystery craft. It's not actually connected. Maybe a magnetic attraction. Could be the power source. It's within a haze of yellow light. There's no sign of ballistics.'
Suddenly there was alarm in his voice. 'It's turning, coming straight for me, am taking evasive action.' His radio then went dead.
Reading all this, Mike didn't know what to believe. Over the coming days, he and his brothers made calls to people who had known their father, and to any contacts they had within the US Air Force who could offer any advice.
And they discovered even more ludicrous stories, and TV interviews with so-called experts who delighted in promoting UFO theories. Mike sent the supposed transcript to one of his father's old USAF friends. The reply was prompt and precise. 'This is utter hokum. It's just a bunch of made-up junk.'
After his initial shock, Mike agreed. 'Clearly it was utter rubbish, but the fact that there was so much information out there about my dad spurred me on to investigate more.' He and his brother were also angered by the stories for doing their distinguished and decorated father a gross disservice. 'My dad was a pilot. I was horrified his name was linked to this UFO nonsense.'
But there still remained that one big mystery. 'None of us could understand why the ejection seat was still in his jet, but my father was not. It became my mission to establish what had happened to him that night.'
After years of secrecy, the Aircraft Accident Report was handed to his sons by an RAF Wing Commander. 'Tragic though it was,' he told them, 'it was an accident. There is no other logical explanation'
More years went by when, out of the blue, Mike had a call from someone at the BBC to say they were investigating his father's death and invited the brothers to come to London to put pressure on the Ministry of Defence to release the accident report.
At first the MoD claimed not to have it — it must have been shredded, they said — but they eventually dug it out. It had the real transcript of their father's final conversation with ground controllers, exposing as a total fake the 'UFO' transcript, with its manufactured conversations and ludicrous descriptions of floating lights.
After years of secrecy, the Aircraft Accident Report was handed to his sons by an RAF Wing Commander. 'Tragic though it was,' he told them, 'it was an accident. There is no other logical explanation.'
A string of operational and procedural errors had led to their father's flight to oblivion. There was no single root cause. The report said: 'His lack of training led to a situation where he failed to monitor the height of his aircraft while slowing down and acquiring his target. And he had inadvertently flown his aircraft into the sea.'
A battle-hardened combat pilot had made a simple error flying a new aircraft on a complex night sortie and it had cost him his life. He would not be the first, or the last.
But why had he not ejected? Why was his seat in the cockpit while he was not?
The explanation was tragically simple. The inquiry revealed that he had pulled the ejection handle but a tiny, misaligned screw in the mechanism that blew off the overhead canopy meant its explosive charge failed to detonate.
The seat was designed not to eject if the canopy was still in place to avoid fatal head injuries. There was no problem with the design of the seat, but the circumstances were such that night that it was never going to blast Bill to safety. A simple engineering error resulted in the death of a husband and father.
'Crashing into the sea at 180mph would probably have resulted in severe injuries,' Chris Coville says. 'He had tried to eject at some point and failed. But he had then clearly unstrapped from his ejection seat, managed to open the cockpit canopy and struggle out as the jet initially floated on the water.'
So why was the jet later discovered with the canopy fully closed? Didn't that point to some outside interference? No. After Schaffner had escaped from his cockpit the aircraft began to sink and the increasing water pressure forced the canopy shut again as it descended.
According to Coville, there was only one answer to the mystery of his friend's disappearance. 'Incapacitated and without his survival dinghy, Bill almost certainly drowned in the cold North Sea. It was sheer bad luck that several elements combined
on that fateful night to take him to his death.'
For Glennon Schaffner, 'discovering that my father's ejection seat hadn't worked because of a servicing error was a shock. The tiniest detail — a damaged screw thread — meant that the canopy jettison unit failed to fire. If it had been serviced correctly, my father might still be alive today.'
No culprit was ever identified but, as the crash report says, the MOD had acted quickly when it discovered what had happened. 'The servicing procedures for the inspection, re-arming and servicing of cockpit canopy firing units have been amended. All ejection firing units have been inspected for signs of damage.'
Just as well. Glennon later discovered that other Lightnings were found to have exactly the same issue with their ejection seats, which was hurriedly rectified. 'There is no doubt our father's death, and the discovery of the fault, meant other lives were saved. At least that's something we can hold onto.'
Mike and Glennon had one final pilgrimage to make, travelling north to Flamborough Head. 'There was a large boat a mile or so out to sea,' Glennon said. 'It climbed and dipped in the swell, disappearing from sight, then rising to appear again.
'I thought of my dad, injured, unstrapping from his ejection seat and climbing from his Lightning out there on a stormy night. He really didn't stand a chance.'
'Fifty-two years after he died,' says Mike, 'I still have a Dad-shaped hole in my life, but now I know why. He died doing what he loved, and I am grateful for that. When I die I want my ashes to be thrown into the North Sea. So I can be back with my him, in his final resting place.'

At first, Kelly thought it resembled a blimp. But as it drew nearer, its true form became clear: a disc-shaped object, hovering with an ethereal orange glow. Windows seemed to line the object’s exterior, and behind them, dark figures stood tall and still. Before either of them could react, the object vanished, leaving behind a trail of awe and confusion.
A White Curtain and Missing Time
Shortly after the initial sighting, the couple encountered an intense, blinding white light. As they drove through it, they were left disoriented, and it felt as though they had moved considerably further down the road than they remembered. To compound the strangeness, upon arriving home, Kelly found a geometric marking below her navel – a red, equilateral triangle that seemed burned into her skin.
Perhaps even more perplexing was the realization that they had lost 90 minutes of time during their drive — time neither could account for.
Connecting the Dots
Kelly’s experience didn’t end that night. In the days that followed, she suffered from abnormal health issues: a sudden and intense menstruation, relentless migraines, and an inexplicable womb infection. Medical examinations offered no concrete answers.
Haunted by what had transpired, Kelly sought the help of UFO researchers. It was then that she learned she wasn’t the only witness that night. Two other cars had stopped to observe the strange object. Bill, Glenda, Jane, and Dave all shared eerily similar stories, and, even more intriguingly, the same triangular mark appeared on the bodies of several of the witnesses.
Sketches drawn independently by the witnesses to depict the event all mirrored each other. They showed the large, circular craft lined with windows and dark, tall figures standing inside. Each account had subtle variations, but the crux remained consistent.
Lingering Mysteries
After the event, Kelly claimed she was visited multiple times by one of the dark figures from that night, sparking electrical disturbances around her. Kelly wasn’t alone in her post-encounter experiences. Glenda shared an unsettling account of waking up in a strange room, strapped to a table, being observed by a cloaked entity.
Many questions remain: Was it an alien encounter? A shared hallucination? Or perhaps a collective spiritual or near-death experience?
While the Dandenong Mountains incident remains unexplained, the multiple witnesses and corroborating evidence make it hard to dismiss. Kelly, Andrew, Bill, Glenda, Jane, and Dave have all had their lives irrevocably changed by that one night. And whether you’re a believer or a skeptic, their tale serves as a chilling reminder of the mysteries that lurk in our world — waiting to be understood.
On September 12, 2023, the Mexican government hosted a historic UAP hearing, organized by the Commission of Science and Technology of the Chamber of Deputies. The event included testimonies from various UAP experts and whistleblowers including former US Navy pilot Ryan Graves. However, the hearings drew criticism from many, as the primary focus was on the two alleged alien corpses presented by Jaime Maussan, a Mexican journalist and UFOlogist with decades of experience researching and reporting on UAPs.
The two tiny alien corpses were displayed in windowed boxes for all to see. The small mummified specimen was retrieved from Cusco, Peru in a layer of diatomaceous earth. They are believed to be one thousand years old. “These aren’t beings that were found after a UFO wreckage,” Maussan said, “They were found in diatom mines, and were later fossilized.” He later added: “Whether they are aliens or not, we don’t know, but they were intelligent, and they lived with us. They should rewrite history.… We are not alone in this vast universe, we should embrace this reality.”
Maussan claimed that DNA testing has been done on the mummies, and more than 30% of it is unknown. Besides, one corpse allegedly was discovered to have what appeared to be eggs or ovaries inside, while another had implants of rare metals, such as Osmium.
Skepticism
However, these claims were rightly called a hoax by many people — a public stunt by Maussan, who has been connected to previous claims of debunked alien discoveries, including five mummies discovered in Peru in 2017, later determined to be remains of human children.
ulieta Fierro, a researcher at the Institute of Astronomy in Mexico, expressed skepticism about some details related to alleged alien corpses and claims made by researchers. Fierro also questions the use of X-rays in determining if the calcified bodies are “non-human.” “Maussan has done many things. He says he has talked to the Virgin of Guadalupe,” she said. “He told me extraterrestrials do not talk to me like they talk to him because I don’t believe in them.”
Vox published an article in an attempt to debunk the Mexican alien mummy case. The article straightforwardly states that these alien remains were likely a hoax, constructed using a combination of pre-Columbian human remains and animal bones, all held together with plaster. It further discusses the broader issue of how such hoaxes contribute to a long history of erasing the achievements of pre-Columbian cultures and perpetuating racist myths. It mentions the practice of cranial reshaping in indigenous South American cultures and how it has been misinterpreted as evidence of alien influence.
Not a hoax
Maussan’s claims regarding these alleged mummified alien bodies are truly otherworldly, causing people to lose faith in this case. However, these specimens possess something genuinely intriguing that is drawing the attention of scientists for further study.
Scientists had previously said the bodies displayed in Mexico UAP hearings were generally assembled from human and animal bones. Now, a new study was conducted on two bodies and found each of them belonged to a single skeleton. According to Jose de Jesus Zalce Benitez, a director of the Scientific Institute for Health of the Mexican Navy, the studies showed that the alleged bodies belonged to a single skeleton and were not assembled.
Dr. Rubén García Linaje, an orthopedic surgeon mentioned that they were observing bones, and it appeared to be a skeleton. He pointed out that there were some unusual features, such as the circular shape of the ribs. He did not see a sternum, and the ribcage seemed to have limited expansion capabilities due to the shape of the ribs.
Dr. Armando González Ballesteros, who specializes in radiology and is an expert in interpreting CT scans also believed it was a skeleton, and it did not appear to be assembled or fabricated. He mentioned that the cranio-cervical junction looked congruent, suggesting it could belong to a biological entity. He commented on certain ribs that appeared to be embedded in the spinal canal, which seemed unusual and could have been due to trauma or other factors. He noted the glenoid, which was the socket where the upper limb articulated, seemed realistic, and the thoracic cage appeared small. However, they could not identify any remnants that would indicate the presence of lungs or other organs.
Dr. González further explained that the term “glenoid” referred to the cup where the upper limb articulated, providing the range of motion for the upper limb. He pointed out that the humeral and glenoid parts resembled those in humans and even noted some signs of wear, similar to arthrosis found in older patients.
Regarding whether this body had been assembled or manipulated, Dr. González noted that based on their preliminary observations, it did not seem to have been fabricated. He mentioned that if it had been manipulated post-mortem, there would likely be signs of cutting or modifications, which they had not seen so far.
The Mexican newspaper El Universal reported that Jaime Maussan met with Mexican senators, including Eduardo Ramírez and Alejandro Armenta, who expressed optimism about supporting him in a reform that would officially recognize the existence of extraterrestrial life.
According to the newspaper, Maussan emphasized that the bodies were not fake and stressed the need for further investigation to determine their true nature. Maussan also mentioned that he and Senator Alejandro Armenta were exploring the possibility of amending the law to acknowledge non-human anomalous phenomena, specifically objects lacking characteristics of terrestrial technology. If successful, this would make Mexico the first country in the world to officially acknowledge such phenomena.
Maussan insisted that the bodies he presented were not fake and refuted the Peruvian government’s contrary claims. He believed that officially recognizing these bodies as non-human would position Mexico at the forefront of global discussions regarding the existence of extraterrestrial life. He also praised the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies for their openness and support in advancing these issues.
Moreover, this might be good news to Maussan as a NASA contractor is reportedly looking to study “alien bodies” he presented in the Mexoco UAP hearings. Dailymail writes that “NASA’s top UFO investigator Dr David Spergel was pressed about the purported alien corpses – and did not shut them down entirely.”
Dr Spergel told reporters: “We don’t know the nature of those samples. My recommendation is, if you have something strange, make samples available to the world scientific community, and we’ll see what’s there.”

It was one of the pivotal UFO videos captured by the US military that helped thrust the once-fringe topic into the mainstream — the so-called 'GOFAST' infrared video filmed by US Navy fighter pilots off the coast of the Atlantic in January 2015.
But NASA claims it has debunked any exotic or extraterrestrial theories for GOFAST, boasting new analysis that 'reveals a less extraordinary interpretation.'
In a landmark advisory report released Thursday, the US space agency said — among other findings — that the GOFAST UFO was 'most likely' nothing more than a conventional object 'drifting with the wind.'
But meteorological records, climate scientists, US Navy witnesses, and even computer simulations developed and tested by diehard UFO skeptics have cast doubt on the likelihood that NASA's GOFAST explanation will hold fast much longer.
At the heart of the issue: NASA's experts, by their own admission, failed to check their math on the UFO's possible 'wind drift' against the global climate science community's public wind-speed data from the likely time of the GOFAST sighting.

To be sure, despite their own skepticism, NASA's UFO advisory panel did otherwise leave plenty of room for UFO true believers, noting in their final report that 'alien technology operating in Earth's atmosphere' was 'at least plausible.'
But, while the panel expressed hope that their efforts would help reduce the stigma around the reporting and scientific analysis of UAP, NASA's experts put forth a theory in their final report apparently intended to bring GOFAST back down to Earth.
In doing so, the space agency ignored voices from the squadron of Navy pilots that filmed GOFAST and the no-less-famous GIMBAL infrared UFO video, recorded that same evening in January 2015.
At the NASA group's open meeting last May, one of its UAP advisory panel members Josh Semeter — an engineering professor and director of Boston University's Center for Space Physics — presented his preliminary analysis of the GOFAST video.
Semeter made his case that the GOFAST was likely an object coasting in a strong breeze primarily by working with data present on the infrared video's display: the same intel a Navy weapons systems officer would use in the backseat of a fighter jet.
'Fortunately the information needed to determine the altitude and velocity of this object is contained on the display,' Semeter explained.
NASA's study group of 16 experts ranging from physicists to astronauts was formed in June 2020 to study unclassified UFO sightings from civilian, government and commercial sectors
Based on his trigonometric calculations of the fighter jet's flight path as the jet filmed the 'GOFAST' UAP, itself a moving target, Semeter estimated that the mystery object was cruising at just about 40 miles per hour (mph).
'That's a velocity that is consistent with wind speeds at 13,000 feet,' Semeter told his fellow NASA-appointed advisors this May. And, in fact, the calculated altitude for the GOFAST UAP, according to Semeter and others, was indeed about 13,000 feet.
Semeter's calculations emerged largely unchallenged in the NASA panel's final UFO report published this past Thursday — except for one significant caveat.
'Our calculation has neglected wind effects on the aircraft,' NASA's UFO report stated, 'and thus there is uncertainty in this result.'
But this dry note of caution might drastically understate the importance of these wind effects, to judge from both Semeter's critics and his allies.
Crucially, the Navy pilot witnesses heard in the GIMBAL video, which was filmed in the same area within approximately 15 minutes of the GOFAST video, state that the wind at their altitude of about 25,000 feet was then blowing '120 knots to the west.'
The skeptic's most conservative run of the simulation would have the GOFAST UFO traveling at 100 knots or 115 mph.
'This suggests that the object could not be a balloon,' as one Metabunk poster noted, 'because it needs intrinsic speed in addition [to] wind speed at 13,000 ft.'
As the US National Weather Service notes, 'wind speed generally increases with increasing height,' and the Metabunk simulation estimates that 120 knots of wind at 25,000 feet could correspond in this case to 50-to-80 knots of wind at 13,000 feet.
But even with this 50-to-80 knots of wind helping the GOFAST sail along, the UFO would still be going too fast: twice as fast as the air pushing at its back.
While Mick West praised Semeter's work for NASA last May, calling it a rare example of 'peer review' in UFO research, the prominent UFO skeptic also felt compelled to note that the wind issue left the GOFAST case still far from identified.
'There are some open questions (and unknowns) re wind,' West posted to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, 'but I think this basic analysis is correct.'

Other observers, however, were less forgiving of the gaps in this NASA analysis.
One, a former Obama-era appointee to the US Department of Defense named Marik von Rennenkampff, called Semeter's omission of the reported wind conditions a 'significant error.'
'The 'GOFAST' video shows a small, sphere-like object with no wings, engines or thermal signature demonstrating 'very interesting apparent maneuvers.'' von Rennenkampff wrote in an opinion piece for The Hill.
But accurate wind speed data for the time of the GOFAST sighting need not be investigated solely via computer models and the recorded statements of the pilots present themselves that day.
Meteorologists and climate science researchers use ERA5 to obtain reliable, global, hour-by-hour weather information for academic research, commercial aviation and government policy making purposes.
It was exactly this kind of data that NASA's UAP advisory panel leader, astrophysicist David Spergel, referenced when introducing the panel's final report this Thursday.
'We looked at NASA's assets,' Spergel said. 'While they provide a comprehensive picture of the ocean, the Earth's surface and atmosphere for studying our evolving planet, they typically do not have the resolution needed for UAP events.'
'However,' he added, 'by providing data on environmental conditions, they can complement other data on UAP.'
In this case, such data would have complimented the infrared video data taken by the Navy and the Navy pilots' witness testimony.
It is not clear from NASA's UFO report whether or not they even tasked the agency's military liaison Mark McInerney, now NASA's first director of UAP research, with requesting more detailed information on the time or place of the GOFAST event.
Such efforts might have assisted the panel in obtaining ERA5 data proximate to the date, region and elevations of the GOFAST UFO episode — like those obtained by the DailyMail.com from a PhD climate researcher who wishes to remain anonymous.

Two likely dates have emerged as the most probable candidates for the Navy's GIMBAL and GOFAST UFO events, which occurred in late January 2015.
In a 2019 statement to Freedom of Information Act researcher John Greenewald, an official spokesperson for the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Information Warfare, Joseph Gradisher, stated that both sightings occurred on January 21, 2015.
But metadata embedded within the original GIMBAL video, as well as an unclassified Department of Defense email, reviewed for a conference paper presented to the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics place both sightings on the evening of January 24th, 2015.
The DailyMail.com can confirm the likelihood of these two dates from previous interviews with retired Navy fighter pilot Lt. Ryan Graves, whose squadron reported the GIMBAL and GOFAST events.
Data from the ERA5 reanalyzed climate dataset, for both the 21st and 24th of January, show that only the later date had wind speeds approaching 120 knots near the region or cruising elevation of 25,000 feet reported by the Navy pilots.

The period for high winds at high altitude persisted from, at least, 4:00 PM ET (21:00 UTC) to 8:00 PM ET (01:00 UTC).
The ERA5 data helps confirm pilot testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee that the sightings occurred 'toward the end of one of the night flights.' These records were obtained by Freedom of Information Act researcher John Greenewald, owner of theblackvault.com
When the agency first announced its UAP advisory panel in June 2022, NASA's Assistant Deputy Associate Administrator for Research Daniel Evans told CNBC that the budget would be 'certainly no more than $100,000.'
Evans said that NASA's budget for the UAP study would be 'very consistent' with standard grant review panels.
It's unclear how much of the 16-person team's modest six-figure budget went toward Semeter's analysis of the GOFAST UAP video.

Christophe Spitzer Isbert — a French UFO researcher whose work on a UAP event near Hessdalen in Norway was cited by the French government's UFO research body Geipan — told the DailyMail.com that he believes NASA should have not rushed its GOFAST opinions into publication
'A small set of assumptions replaced hypothesis testing,' Isbert said.
'Assuming the object was lighter than air because it was slow and did not radiate heat does not constitute evidence to support the balloon hypothesis,' he added.
Isbert expressed his opinion that the US space agency should have attempted to collect a wider set of undisputed evidence on the GOFAST case, perhaps in the form of an official Navy report, before leveraging its stature with these public comments.
As an example, he recommended one possible method to help confirm NASA's wind-blown hypothesis, a method that also used only data available in the video itself.
'Tumbling on any axis would be visible as aspect ratio changes (length vs height),' Isbert noted. 'This would also be predicted by the balloon hypothesis since the object is not [perfectly] spherical.'
When reached for comment Monday morning, Josh Semeter of NASA's UAP advisory panel told the DailyMail.com via email, 'Yes, a 100-knot object ground speed is within the range of plausible solutions.'
'But based on uncertainties in wind vectors and trajectory model,' Semeter noted, 'a speed below 40 knots cannot be ruled out.'
The NASA panelist emphasized that the advisory group's intention by including this top-down or overhead 2-dimensional analysis of the GOFAST video, 'with wind effects left as an uncertainty, range data assumed reliable, etc.' was intended to 'highlight challenges and limitations in current UAP investigations.'
In the GOFAST, as in many other tantalizing and vexing UAP cases, Semeter said, 'critical data and confidence intervals are lacking.'
'This is, in fact, a central theme of the report.'
NASA Releases Name of Its First-Ever "UFO Czar" After Threats

With government interest in unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs) skyrocketing, NASA has announced its first-ever "UFO czar" after initially declining to do so out of concerns for his safety.
In a press release last week, NASA named its new director of UAP research, longtime civil servant Mark McInerney, in response to calls for the agency to "play a more prominent role in understanding" the phenomena — and, it seems, because people started threatening the agency and people associated with it.
Last week, the agency held a press conference pegged to the release of an independent report about UAPs and announced that it was appointing a head of UAP research. However, NASA refused to name that person at the time because members of the study panel had been subjected to jeers and threats, as Politico and other outlets reported.
"That’s in part why we are not splashing the name of our new director out there, because science needs to be free," Dan Evans, NASA's assistant deputy associate administrator, told reporters at the time. "Some of [the incidents] rose to actual threats."
The incident highlights how much of a hot-button topic UAPs have become as of late. With government organizations like NASA taking recent reports of UFO sightings more seriously, we've seen a resurgence of conspiracy theories surrounding the existence of government cover-ups, and other far-fetched theories pertaining to the existence of extraterrestrial life.
Despite NASA's efforts to protect McInerney's identity, the agency eventually gave in to the pressure.
Nicola Fox, an associate NASA administrator, put it even more bluntly when asked directly by reporters about the new director's identity, saying "we will not give his name out."
Later that same day, however, NASA sent out an update that named McInerny as its new director with no apparent explanation as to the about-face.
It's still unclear why the agency released McInerny's name after initially declining to do so, and Futurism has reached out to NASA for clarity about that decision.
The institutional need for a "UFO czar" came as a recommendation from the study, which was led by David Spergel of the Simons Foundation. Among other things, the study panel called on NASA to work in tandem with other government agencies — including the Pentagon, for which McInerney used to be a liaison at NASA — to study UAPs, as Time reports.
As Spergel told the magazine, folks "harassed some of our panel members," which he rightfully characterized as "very inappropriate behavior."
On the whole, it's a win for the pursuit of science in the face of the persistent stigma surrounding UFO research — but NASA's lack of disclosure about why McInerny was initially not named only serves to muddle the issue.
Given the jeers and abuse, it's clear that NASA still has a long way to go before its investigations into UAPs are fully taken seriously by the public, something that will only serve to impede the scientific process.

A tranche of UFO videos — including never-before-seen footage — has been quietly released by federal law enforcement.
US Customs and Border Protection, the agency responsible for keeping terrorists and their weapons out of the country, uploaded 10 videos that appear to show craft moving in strange ways in our skies.
The videos were released on August 9without warning, a press release or much in the way of context, only to be discovered by UFO enthusiasts and online sleuths earlier this week.
The videos document a fighter jet pursued by an apparently baffling flying orb, as well as something that appears to be a propeller-powered hang-glider, and yet another apparent floating orb, hovering this time near a parked 16-wheeler truck.
But the enigmatic nature of the drop — which offered little detail regarding the times and locations of these sightings, plus more than a few sweeping redactions — has left more questions than answers.
The quiet video drop follows rising tensions within the corridors of power in Washington on the once taboo subject of UFOs.
Open congressional hearings, federal legislation and even brand new government offices have now been dedicated openly to the investigation of these aerial mysteries, with at least one former senior US intelligence official calling the strange sightings 'a national security issue.'

But perhaps most significantly, the US CBP release confirms, at least tacitly, the veracity of a heavily scrutinized, 2013 thermal UFO video leaked to UFO researchers in 2015. For the first time since the leak, the April 25, 2013 Aguadilla, Puerto Rico UFO video has been confirmed
The videos were released on a dedicated site for agency records made public via requests under the US Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
But perhaps most significantly, the release confirms, at least tacitly, the veracity of a heavily-scrutinized, 2013 thermal UFO video leaked to UFO researchers in 2015.
Asked by NBC News, Chris Mellon, a former official with the Secretary of Defense for Intelligence, described the release as 'very significant.'
'This will help the public understand what our military personnel are encountering all over the world,' Mellon said.

Mick West, a prolific and dedicated examiner of UFO claims and the owner of the skeptics forum Metabunk, described the videos as 'mostly not new.'
'And those that are new are not particularly interesting,' West told the DailyMail.com, noting that several had already been the subject of unofficial leaks to reporters and researchers on the UFO beat.
West, a retired computer programmer and video game designer, described the first of US Customs' UAP videos as something that 'looks like a microlight aircraft.'
Several others, he noted, appeared to be 'ambiguous white dots, [...] a balloon or a plastic bag.'
The second video, West said, was the so-called 'Rubber Duck' UAP, which the noted skeptic devoted considerable time to investigating on his YouTube channel and in Metabunk's forum back in 2021.
West identified CBP video 9 as the 'infamous 'Aguadilla' video,' which he has argued reveals a thermal signature 'consistent with a pair of wedding lanterns drifting in the wind.'
West has taken the Scientific Coalition for UAP Studies (SCU) to task for errors located in an Appendix to their lengthy report on the Aguadilla case, but at least according to the SCU's co-founder, engineer Robert Powell, those errors do not undermine the remainder of his team's assessment.
'The report does not depend on Appendix L,' Powell told the DailyMail.com, stating that West did not have an answer for why floating wedding lanterns would veer from west to north, as the Aguadilla UFO is recorded doing in the video's final moments.
'The second reason it's not Chinese lanterns,' according to Powel, 'is that Chinese lanterns can't survive the wind speeds that were occurring that day. The wind speeds were around 13 miles an hour.'
'It's basically a little candle that sits on these little wires, and you've got a very light [plastic or paper] bag around it,' Powell said. 'Heavy winds will collapse the outside of your Chinese lantern.'
Whatever the mystery of Aguadilla proves to be, US Customs' 10 videos were not the only agency records quietly released this August under FOIA.
The agency's official confirmation of these previously only leaked thermal videos and security recordings were also accompanied by a 389-page PDF document, ostensibly of UAP records held internally by US Customs.

While the paperwork includes much chaff — news clippings, and already public government reports — the FOIA drop also included internal emails detailing internal deliberations on the law enforcement agency's UFO cases.
Several agency emails from August 2021, document an exchange between a UFO enthusiast and his superior regarding efforts to comply with spirit of the then-recent congressional legislation on UFOs and the resulting UAP Task Force report.
'As a pet project, or for fun, do all the research you want,' the redacted official wrote to the CBP's equivalent to X-Files FBI agent Fox Mulder. 'I know this topic is of great interest to you and there's a ton of information to sift through.'
'There just isn't an avenue for any formal research or reporting any type of findings or conclusions,' the redacted official stressed.
The also-redacted CPB employee responded, 'T4... I apologize, and took The Director of National Intelligence's UAP report seriously.'
But the release also includes over two dozen tantalizing pages that have been redacted in their entirety.
Per statute, each page lists the legal exemption under which US CBP is permitted to withhold certain records relevant to an open records request.
The majority of these redactions, in this case, were justified under the b(5) and b(7)e exemptions clauses of federal FOIA law.
Investigative reporters and open government advocates have dubbed the b(5) exemption the 'The Withhold It Because You Want To Exemption' as its guidelines were even described by the US Justice Department as 'opaque.'
The b(7)e exemption pertains effectively to law enforcement's own 'sources and methods,' as it withholds details that would 'disclose techniques and procedures for law enforcement investigations or prosecutions' and other material that officials believe 'could reasonably be expected to risk circumvention of the law.'
To this end, several of the released videos have notably redacted the majority of the heads-up-display information from US CBP's infrared or thermal video recordings: which would likely include data on the altitude, bearing and range of these UAP.

All summer long, a sweltering UFO fever has gripped Washington DC, stoked in no small measure by a series of extraordinary claims and revelations from lawmakers, former US intelligence and Navy personnel.
This past June, charges of an illegal, hidden UFO crash retrieval program operating within the shadows exploded across television airwaves and online as made by Air Force and intelligence agency veteran David Grusch.
Soon thereafter, Senate Intelligence Committee Vice Chairman Marco Rubio revealed he too had been briefed by several other US government officials with top-level security clearances, who professed that they personally had 'first-hand' knowledge of UFO programs.
By late July, Grusch was reasserting many of his claims under oath before the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, along with Ryan Graves, an esteemed former pilot, and veteran Navy fighter pilot Commander David Fravor, who witnessed the now famous 2004 'Tic Tac' UFO.
In his further comments on the new CPB videos, former DOD intelligence official Chris Mellon hoped that the newly official US Customs videos would spur the Pentagon toward greater transparency itself.
Mellon noted that these mysterious UFO videos highlight 'the challenges we are facing monitoring and controlling our airspace.'
He cited both last February's infamous Chinese spy balloon affair (and still-as-yet-unidentified UAP), and 'of course the explosion of drone use around the world,' as examples of the new threats to US sovereignty posed by the weak official reporting and widespread stigma surrounding unidentified aerial phenomena.
'I hope that the Defense Department and [US] Intelligence Community are paying attention,' Mellon told NBC.
'They have many videos that are of a similar, unclassified nature,' he noted, 'or were, until they — out of nowhere — created this new classification guide.'
Echoing comments by Grusch on the legality of the Pentagon's actions, Mellon went on to express the opinion that the DoD's new and more expansive classification standards for its own UAP or UFO videos might not be 'lawful.'
'I don't think that's consistent with the executive order governing classification,' the former intelligence official said. 'But they are withholding a lot of similar kinds of videos from the public on that basis.'

But that could finally change following the official release of information from the Pentagon about the mysterious aerial phenomena.
The new Department of Defense document reveals characteristics of the typical UFO, including the colour and the shape, velocity, and flight level
Based on clues from reported sightings, the typical UFO has a round shape, usually described as spherical or an orb, with a white or silver colour, often translucent.
It also has a size of between 3 and 13 feet (1 to 4 metres) and usually travels through the air at a height just below commercial passenger planes.
On September 14, 2023, the NASA Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena independent study team published itsfinal reportcontaining a series of recommendations for how the agency could help to move our understanding of unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) forward.
The NASA UAP independent study team recommends that NASA plays a prominent role in the whole-of-government effort to understand UAP by leveraging its extensive expertise to contribute to a comprehensive, evidence-based approach that is rooted in the scientific method. The team members specifically recommend that NASA utilize its existing and planned Earth-observing assets to probe the local environmental conditions associated with UAP that are initially detected by other means. In so doing, NASA can directly probe whether certain environmental factors are coincident with known UAP. They further recommend that NASA explore enhancing collaborations with the U.S. commercial remote-sensing industry, which offer powerful constellations of high-resolution Earth-observing satellites.

UAP, popularly known as UFOs, are one of our planet’s greatest mysteries.
Observations of objects in our skies that cannot be identified as balloons, aircraft, or natural known phenomena have been spotted worldwide, yet there are limited high-quality observations.
The nature of science is to explore the unknown, and data are the language scientists use to discover our Universe’s secrets.
Despite numerous accounts and visuals, the absence of consistent, detailed, and curated observations means, scientists do not presently have the body of data needed to make definitive, scientific conclusions about UAP.
In 2022, NASA commissioned the independent study to better understand how the agency can contribute to ongoing government efforts to further the study observations of UAP.
The independent study team, set up outside of NASA, used unclassified data from civilian government entities, commercial data, and data from other sources to inform their findings and recommendations in the report.
There are currently a limited number of high-quality observations of UAP, which currently make it impossible to draw firm scientific conclusions about their nature.
The team’s report contains the findings and recommendations which aim to inform NASA on what possible data is available to be collected and how the agency can help shed light on the origin and nature of future UAP.
While NASA still is evaluating the report and assessing the independent study team’s findings and recommendations, the agency is committed to contributing to the federal government’s unified UAP effort by appointing Mark McInerney director of UAP research.
“At NASA, it’s in our DNA to explore — and to ask why things are the way they are. I want to thank the Independent Study Team for providing insight on how NASA can better study and analyze UAP in the future,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.
“NASA’s new Director of UAP Research will develop and oversee the implementation of NASA’s scientific vision for UAP research, including using NASA’s expertise to work with other agencies to analyze UAP and applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to search the skies for anomalies.”
“NASA will do this work transparently for the benefit of humanity.”
The overall recommendation for NASA from the new report is that the agency can play a prominent role in the government’s effort to understand UAP by furthering the study and data collection of UAP.
The external study recommends that NASA use its open-source resources, extensive technological expertise, data analysis techniques, federal and commercial partnerships, and Earth-observing assets to curate a better and robust dataset for understanding future UAP.
NASA also will advance citizen reporting by engaging with the public and commercial pilots to build a broader, more reliable UAP dataset to use to identify future UAP incidents as well as destigmatize the study of UAP.
“Using unclassified data was essential for our team’s fact-finding, open-communication collaboration, and for upholding scientific rigor to produce this report for NASA,” said David Spergel, president of the Simons Foundation and chair of the UAP independent study team.
“The team wrote the report in conjunction with NASA’s pillars of transparency, openness and scientific integrity to help the agency shed light on the nature of future UAP incidents.”
“We found that NASA can help the whole-of-government UAP effort through systematic data calibration, multiple measurements and ensuring thorough sensor metadata to create a data set that is both reliable and extensive for future UAP study.”
“Data are the critical lifeblood needed to advance scientific exploration, and we thank the independent study team members for lending NASA their expertise towards identifying what available data is possible to understand the nature and origin of future UAP,” said Nicola Fox, associate administrator of Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters.
“The director of UAP Research is a pivotal addition to NASA’s team and will provide leadership, guidance and operational coordination for the agency and the federal government to use as a pipeline to help identify the seemingly unidentifiable.”

Jupiter’s icy moon Europa has an ocean beneath a crust of water ice. Solid carbon dioxide has previously been observed on the surface, but the source was unknown. Two teams analyzed infrared spectroscopic data of Europa from the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope to investigate the source of carbon dioxide.

Beneath a crust of solid water ice, Europa is thought to have a subsurface ocean of salty liquid water.
Because of this, Europa is a prime target in the search for life elsewhere in the Solar System.
Assessing this deep ocean’s potential habitability depends on its chemistry, including the abundance of biologically essential elements like carbon.
Previous research has identified the presence of carbon dioxide ice on Europa’s surface, but it has not been possible to establish whether carbon dioxide originated from the subsurface ocean, was delivered to the moon’s surface by meteorite impacts, or was produced on the surface through interactions with Jupiter’s magnetosphere.
Determining the source of carbon dioxide could constrain the chemistry of Europa’s internal ocean.

“On Earth, life likes chemical diversity — the more diversity, the better,” said Dr. Geronimo Villanueva, a researcher at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
“We’re carbon-based life. Understanding the chemistry of Europa’s ocean will help us determine whether it’s hostile to life as we know it, or if it might be a good place for life.”
“We now think that we have observational evidence that the carbon we see on Europa’s surface came from the ocean. That’s not a trivial thing. Carbon is a biologically essential element,” said Dr. Samantha Trumbo, a researcher at Cornell University.
In their two studies, the authors analyzed near-infrared spectroscopy of carbon dioxide on Europa’s surface, obtained with Webb’s Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec).
In the first study, Dr. Trumbo and her colleague, Caltech researcher Michael Brown, used the Webb data to map the distribution of carbon dioxide on Europa and found the highest abundance of carbon dioxide is located in Tara Regio, a 1,800-km2 region dominated by chaos terrain, geologically disrupted resurfaced materials.
According to the team, the amount of carbon dioxide identified within this recently resurfaced region — some of the youngest terrain on Europa’s surface — indicates that it was derived from an internal source of carbon.
This implies that carbon dioxide formed within Europa’s subsurface ocean and was brought to the surface on a geologically recent timescale.
However, the formation of carbon dioxide on the surface from ocean-derived organics or carbonates cannot be entirely ruled out. In either interpretation, the subsurface ocean contains carbon.
“Previous observations from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope show evidence for ocean-derived salt in Tara Regio,” Dr. Trumbo said.
“Now we’re seeing that carbon dioxide is heavily concentrated there as well. We think this implies that the carbon probably has its ultimate origin in the internal ocean.”
In the second study, Dr. Villanueva and colleagues found that carbon dioxide on Europa’s surface is mixed with other compounds.

They also found that carbon dioxide is concentrated in Tara Regio and interpreted that as demonstrating that the carbon on the moon’s surface was sourced from within.
The scientists measured the ice’s 12C/13C isotopic ratio, but could not distinguish between an abiotic or biogenic source.
Moreover, they searched for plumes of volatile material breaching moon’s icy crust.
Although previous studies have reported evidence of these features, the authors did not detect any plume activity during the Webb observations.
They argue that plume activity on Europa could be infrequent, or sometimes does not contain the volatile gasses they included in their search.
“Scientists are debating how much Europa’s ocean connects to its surface. I think that question has been a big driver of Europa exploration,” Dr. Villanueva said.
“This suggests that we may be able to learn some basic things about the ocean’s composition even before we drill through the ice to get the full picture.”

Alaska, with its vast, remote landscapes and eerie, dark winter nights, has always evoked a sense of mystery. Over the years, it has become a hotspot for UFO sightings, drawing extraterrestrial enthusiasts from across the globe. The latest testimonies and evidence emerging from the icy wilderness of the Alaska Triangle only intensify its reputation as a UFO haven.
The Unsolved Mystery of the Alaska Triangle
Recent videos and eyewitness accounts have highlighted frequent unexplained lights and mysterious objects dancing across Alaskan skies. Many assert these are not just regular aircraft or natural phenomena. They point to erratic, high-speed movements that challenge our understanding of physics — maneuvers that would liquefy a human from the sheer G-forces.
A particularly gripping account comes from Rance Lenz, a resident of Delta Junction. As a child, Rance witnessed an otherworldly light show. Hey NASA, you've just landed your first samples from an asteroid! Where are they going next?
Houston, of course.
Wrapping up a seven-year-long, nearly four-billion-mile (6.4 billion kilometers) journey to the asteroid Bennu and back, the U.S. space agency's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft deployed its sample return capsule (SRC) to land in the Utah desert on Sunday (Sept. 24). A team of NASA scientists and Lockheed Martin engineers were on site within a minute of the touchdown to begin the process of retrieving the capsule and about half a pound (8.8 ounces or 250 grams) of rocks and soil that is estimated to be on board.
After ensuring the area was clear of any unexploded ordinance, the capsule landed as planned within the Department of Defense's Utah Test and Training Range (UTTR) — and when the well-traveled hardware was safe to approach, the team began securing the capsule and loading it into a cradle. The latter was important because it allowed the capsule to soon be hoisted by a helicopter and taken to a temporary clean room at UTTR.
"When we first come into the hangar, the team there will unbag the SRC and try to clean off some of the dirt and dust that that it might have picked up. We can't get it pristinely clean, but we can knock off big hunks of the desert floor," Richard Witherspoon, Lockheed Martin's OSIRIS-REx ground recovery lead, said in an interview with Space.com. "And they will take scrapings from the heat shield and back shell at that time, which will go off for later analysis."

Once inside the clean room, the SRC will start getting disassembled. By this point, there's a chance scientists will get their very first look at samples from Bennu.
"We're never expecting to expose any sample while we are in the cleanroom at UTTR. The one thing that might be different though, is when we stowed the touch-and-go sample acquisition mechanism (TAGSAM) in the SRC [while still in orbit around Bennu], we did so quickly because the it was literally overflowing with regolith [soil] and the mylar flap that was supposed to be a one way valve was held open by a very large rock," Witherspoon said. "So it's possible that while we were stowing the TAGSAM, a little bit of the regolith might have escaped and gotten trapped inside of the SRC."
If that is the case, the team will carefully collect the escaped material while still in Utah.
Engineers will then remove the SRC's heat shield and backshell so the two can be trucked to Lockheed Martin's facilities in Denver for analysis. That work will also expose the "avionics deck" for what might be the most important step of this preliminary work.
"We need to get the samples under a nitrogen purge," Witherspoon said. "There's a spot on the avionics deck where we will push in a needle through which we flow ultra-high purity nitrogen. That creates a positive pressure that [prevents Earth's atmosphere from flowing in and contaminating the sample]."
The team will then wrap up the avionics deck and place the entire assembly into a shipping container before retiring for the day.

From outer space to Houston
Early Monday morning (Sept. 25), the team will come together once more to load the partially disassembled capsule onto a C-17 military transport plane for an 8:00 a.m. MDT (10:00 a.m. EDT or 1400 GMT) flight to Ellington Field in Houston.
"Once on the ground in Texas, we load all of the equipment onto a box truck and caravan from Ellington Field to Johnson Space Center," Witherspoon said. "We have a police escort while we're doing that, just in case there is traffic, but we are landing and moving before rush hour starts in Houston."
Upon arriving at Building 31 — the same facility that houses the majority of moon rocks brought back by Apollo astronauts as well as other astromaterials collected by NASA missions — the OSIRIS-REx payload will be placed in a pair of cleanrooms.
"In the first cleanroom, we take off one of the layers of bagging, we clean everything and we get it onto the nitrogen purge that is inside of that lab. Then that's a safe place to leave the sample overnight if we need to," Witherspoon said. "But then either we will continue on that day or on Tuesday morning and move to the upstairs lab, which is called the OSIRIS-REx Curation Lab and was specially built for this mission."

The new curation laboratory has specialized gloveboxes for handling both the Bennu samples as well as the hardware used to grab material from the asteroid's surface and deliver it to Earth.
"Once the avionics deck goes into the glovebox, there is one final step that Lockheed engineers do and that is to open and take the lid off of the science canister, which then exposes the TAGSAM," Witherspoon said. "We lift that off and put it into a special fixture that curation gave us and then that is when we are done. We back away, we leave the room and the NASA-led curation team comes in and starts the disassembly of all the components."

Sample study
NASA anticipates it will take several weeks from the point the lid is opened for the team to carefully and methodically fully disassemble the hardware to reveal the pristine asteroid inside.
"Once that occurs, we will start to characterize the sample, understand better what we have, how much we have and how many different rock types and lithologies there might be within the sample," Kevin Righter, NASA's curator for the Bennu material, said during a pre-landing press briefing. "That characterization will be used to determine the material that we allocate to our international partners from JAXA [Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency] and the Canadian Space Agency, as well as determining what material will be appropriate to allocate to the science team for their studies."

It is believed the Bennu sample will help us learn how our solar system and planets evolved. The returned material will help scientists investigate planet formation and the origin of organics that may have led to life on Earth, hence the "O" in the mission's full name, "Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification and Security–Regolith Explorer" (OSIRIS-REx).
"We believe that we're bringing back representatives of the seeds of life that the asteroids delivered at the beginning of our planet, which led to this amazing biosphere, biological evolution and to us being here today to look back on that amazing history to think about where did we come from and where are we going," said Dante Lauretta, principal investigator for the OSIRIS-REx mission at the University of Arizona, Tucson.
NASA has scheduled a press conference for Oct. 11 to provide a first look at the samples and the preliminary findings by its science team.
