Dr. Michio Kaku revealed that an alien megastructure could be located 1,500 light years away from Earth.
He made this assumption on the basis of an anusual light that is coming from a star know as KIC 8462852.
The mystery dimming of star KIC 8462852 has fueled intensive research as dozens of scientists have desperately tried explaining what causes the mysterious light fluctuations of the star.
Theoretical Physicist Michio Kaku believes that the potential alien megastructure around the mystery star could be “the biggest story in the past five-hundred years!”
According to Dr. Kaku, “this star is breaking all the rules” and “we would have to rewrite astronomy textbooks” to think anything different.
“Basically, if a planet eclipses a Mother Star, goes in front of the Mother Star, Starlight drops maybe one percent at maximum–however starlight has been dropping at twenty-two percent,” Dr. Kaku explained in an interview.
“There is a colossal, humongous, object of some sort blocking the starlight from this star. We’ve ruled out all of the usual suspects; rouge planets, comets, asteroids and the only thing left is an ‘alien superstructure’ of some type.”
“We’re talking about what’s called a Type Two Civilization that could build a gigantic [Dyson Sphere] sphere possibly bigger than Jupiter to absorb starlight, to produce energy and is right out of science fiction,” added Dr. Kaku.
So far scientists continue monitoring the mystery star which displays hundreds of anomalous dips in the star’s light. Mysteriously, these dips do not appear to be parodic at all and have strange shapes as well. Researchers agree that it’s nearly impossible that the strange dips in the Stars luminosity are caused by planets since it would cause a dip pattern which repeats itself regularly, something that is not happening at KIC 8462852.
Researchers believe that two to three years of continuous observations using the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network (LCOGT), could most likely enable the team to spectroscopically identify material around KIC 8462852, and solve one of the biggest astronomical mysteries of the 21st century.

That giant flaming star in the sky does rotate, but moves at a much slower pace than the Earth.
It takes 24 hours for the Earth to make a full rotation, but since the sun isn't a solid object like a planet, its rotation is harder to pinpoint.
"Since the sun is a ball of gas/plasma, it does not have to rotate rigidly like the solid planets and moons do,"according to NASA.
In fact, our gaseous sun is divided into different zones and layers, with each of our host star's regions moving at varying speeds. On average, the sun rotates on its axis once every 27 days. However, its equator spins the fastest and takes about 24 days to rotate, while the poles take more than 30 days. The inner parts of the sun also spin faster than the outer layers, according to NASA.
Back in 1612, Galileo Galilei noticed something odd: sunspots moved across the sun's disk over time, confirming the sun's rotation, according to Stanford University's Solar Center. Even today, researchers are able to monitor the sun's movements and rate of rotation by observing its sunspot activity.
Sunspots occur where the sun's plasma interacts with its magnetic field and can lead to solar flares and other types of solar storms.
You'd expect sunspots to be hot, but they're actually cold areas on the sun's surface, though "cold" is a relative term. Sunspots average around 5,000 to 7,500 degrees Fahrenheit (2,760 to 4150 degrees Celsius), in contrast to the areas surrounding them, which average around 9,900 degrees F (5,480 C).

In her race to secure the Democratic nomination for president, Hillary Clinton has recently drawn support from an unusual voter base — alien enthusiasts. First in a radio interview, then again on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," Clinton expressed interest in making public files about UFOs and the mysterious Nevada site called Area 51.
"I would like us to go into those files and hopefully make as much of that public as possible. If there's nothing there, let's tell people there's nothing there," said Clinton, speaking with Kimmel. She confirmed that her husband, former President Bill Clinton, had also gone looking for extraterrestrial information during his presidency and came up empty.
"If anyone is expecting to find flying saucers or dead aliens or any of that stuff, I think they'll be very disappointed," said Jeffrey T. Richelson, senior fellow with the National Security Archive at George Washington University, of this hypothetical release, in an interview with Live Science.
The National Security Archive, a nonprofit founded in 1985 to uncover and archive government documents and release them to the public, holds the second-largest collection of declassified U.S. files (the federal government has the largest repository).
As part of the archive's efforts, Richelson edited a release of declassified Area 51 files in 2013 that included more than 60 documents. Among many other activities, these files shed some light on Area 51's role in the development of stealth programs and the test flights of covertly obtained Soviet MiG fighter jets during the Cold War.
What is Area 51?
Warning signs tell people to stay away from Area 51.
Located in Nevada about 80 miles (130 kilometers) northwest of Las Vegas, Area 51 is a military base that is restricted to the public. Its official name is the Nevada Test and Training Range, which is part of the Edwards Air Force Base.
Over the years, people who have worked (and claimed to have worked) at Area 51 have added fuel to the UFO fire with claims of working with aliens or having access to alien technology gathered from spacecraft crash sites. [7 Huge Misconceptions About Aliens]
"It's important to separate [what really happened there] from what most people think of when they think of Area 51: that that's where there is alien technology, a crash that had occurred somewhere that had been picked up by the military and kept there in a super-secret base, and all that kind of stuff," said Roger D. Launius, associate director for collections and curatorial affairs at the National Air and Space Museum. "That piece of it is a folklore that has no bearing [on] and no relationship to any reality whatsoever."
The scoop on spy planes
What is real, added Launius, is the facility's involvement in highly classified aerospace research and development.
Area 51's connection to experimental aircraft may be a reason why people have connected it with extraterrestrial cover-ups. After all, it is a well-known yet super-secret base that has many strange aircraft fly in and out of it, Richelson said. By his estimation, further details about the different aircraft programs that have connections to Area 51 would be the most likely results of any actions Clinton would take to declassify documents about the facility.
Specifically, Richelson theorized that further declassification of Area 51 documents could fill us in on what has gone on there after the U-2, OXCART (the successor to the U-2), F-117 and SR-71 Blackbird secret aircraft projects, which were featured in the 2013 document release. It's a challenge to theorize about the contents of secret documents, but Richelson's best guesses were that the public might gain additional information about stealth-drone programs, such asthe RQ-170 and RQ-180, and other exotic aircraft that were tested but never produced in significant numbers.
One aircraft that he said we could learn more about is the Northrop Tacit Blue, a battlefield surveillance aircraft that, according to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, "tested advanced radar sensors and new ideas in stealth technology." This unusual plane, with curves reminiscent of a to-go box, flew 135 times before the program ended in 1985.
Regardless of whether people are invested in extraterrestrial revelations, Launius said there is an important point to be made about Clinton's declassification discussions. "I would like to think that, whoever the president is — whether it's Mrs. Clinton or it's Mr. Trump, or it's somebody else, or the current president as well — that every piece of classified information that exists inside the federal government that is no longer necessary for our national security, should be declassified," he said.
While he is in favor of openness in regard to government records, Launius also notes that declassification does require significant effort and may take several years to complete, even with a presidential push.

Nog iets meer dan drie maanden en dan vertrekt OSIRIS-REx naar de machtig interessante planetoïde Bennu. De opdracht: materiaal van de planetoïde ‘pakken’ en terugbrengen op aarde.
OSIRIS-REx is een acronym dat staat voor Origins Spectral Interpretation Resource Identification Security Regolith Explorer. Een mondvol en dat hoef je ook niet te onthouden. Het belangrijkste om te weten is dat OSIRIS-REx een prachtige missie belooft te worden die het meer dan waard is om op de voet te worden gevolgd. Dat hopen wij natuurlijk te gaan doen, maar eerst blikken we vooruit. Hoe steekt OSIRIS-REx in elkaar? En wat gaat de sonde precies doen?

Bennu Zoals het er nu naar uitziet, wordt OSIRIS-REx op 8 september gelanceerd. De bestemming? Bennu: een planetoïde die één keer in de zes jaar bij de aarde in de buurt komt. De planetoïde is zo’n 510 meter groot en haast zich met een gemiddelde snelheid van ongeveer 100.000 kilometer per uur door de ruimte. De planetoïde heeft zo’n 1,2 jaar nodig om een rondje rond de zon te voltooien en doet er 4,3 uur over om een rondje om de eigen as te draaien. En..ook niet onbelangrijk: er is een gerede kans (ongeveer 1 op 2500, voor zover we nu weten) dat de planetoïde aan het eind van de 22e eeuw de aarde raakt.
Primitieve planetoïde Je ziet: we weten al aardig wat over deze planetoïde. En toch stuurt NASA er een ruimtesonde op af. Waarom? Bennu is een zogenoemde ‘primitieve planetoïde‘. Dat betekent dat deze sinds zijn ontstaan – zo’n 4,5 miljard jaar geleden – eigenlijk heel weinig veranderd is. Onderzoekers hopen dan ook dat deze planetoïde ons veel meer kan vertellen over de omstandigheden in het jonge zonnestelsel. Ze zijn met name nieuwsgierig welke organische moleculen – stoffen die een bijdrage hebben geleverd aan het ontstaan van het leven op aarde – in de jonge jaren van ons zonnestelsel reeds voorhanden waren. Aangenomen wordt dat planetoïden zoals Bennu deze stoffen bezaten en deze – door op aarde in te slaan – op onze planeet afleverden.
Momenteel wordt OSIRIS-REx nog uitgebreid getest.

De instrumenten Werk aan de winkel dus voor OSIRIS-REx. Aan boord van de sonde vinden we verschillende instrumenten die een antwoord kunnen bieden op de vele vragen die wetenschappers hebben. Zo zijn aan boord van OSIRIS-REx onder meer drie camera’s te vinden. Daarnaast bevindt zich aan boord een instrument dat OLA (OSIRIS-REx Laser Altimeter) wordt genoemd. Dit instrument kan met behulp van laserpulsen de exacte afstand tussen OSIRIS-REx en Bennu bepalen en zo bijdragen aan topografische kaarten van de planetoïde. Daarnaast zijn er nog drie instrumenten aan boord te vinden die onder meer in staat zijn om mineralen te detecteren en identificeren.
TIJDLIJN
OSIRIS-REx wordt op 8 september gelanceerd en moet in augustus 2018 bij Bennu arriveren. In oktober 2018 start de sonde dan met het bestuderen van Bennu. Een belangrijk onderzoeksdoel is het kiezen van een plekje waar materiaal van het oppervlak kan worden verwijderd. In 2019 moet de sonde dan daadwerkelijk wat oppervlaktemateriaal van Bennu opnemen. In 2021 verlaat OSIRIS-REx Bennu en keert terug naar de aarde. In 2023 komt OSIRIS-REx bij de aarde in de buurt en zal deze de ruimtecapsule met daarin het verzamelde oppervlaktemateriaal richting de aarde sturen. OSIRIS-REx keert zelf niet terug naar onze planeet, maar zal zich in een stabiele baan rondom de zon nestelen.
De arm Maar misschien wel het meest interessante onderdeel van OSIRIS-REx is TAGSAM (Touch-And-Go Sample Acquisition Mechanism). Het is een arm die aan OSIRIS-REx bevestigd zit. Op een bepaald moment in de missie is het namelijk de bedoeling dat de ruimtesonde materiaal van het oppervlak van Bennu verzamelt. Om dat te doen, zal de sonde de planetoïde tot op zo’n 5 meter afstand naderen en TAGSAM uitstrekken. De arm moet dan minimaal 60 gram (en maximaal zo’n 2 kilo) materiaal van het oppervlak van Bennu opnemen. Als dat lukt – de arm kan dat in totaal drie keer proberen – dan wordt het verzamelde materiaal opgeslagen in SRC (Sample Return Capsule). Aan het eind van de OSIRIS-REx-missie zal deze ruimtecapsule – met aan boord het verzamelde oppervlaktemateriaal van Bennu – terugkeren naar de aarde. Daar kan het materiaal uitgebreid worden geanalyseerd. Dat neemt naar verwachting zo’n twee jaar in beslag.
Missiedoelen Materiaal van het oppervlak van Bennu halen en terugbrengen naar de aarde is zonder enige twijfel het belangrijkste doel van OSIRIS-REx, maar onderzoekers hopen nog veel meer uit de missie te halen. Zo willen ze dankzij OSIRIS-REx een gedetailleerde topografische kaart van de planetoïde kunnen maken. Daarnaast willen ze achterhalen welke invloed zonne-energie op de baan van de planetoïde heeft (ook wel het Yarkovsky-effect genoemd).
Wanneer OSIRIS REx het oppervlak van Bennu nadert om materiaal van het oppervlak te halen, zullen de zonnepanelen van het ruimtevaartuig een V-vorm aannemen. Dit om te voorkomen dat stof op de zonnepanelen terecht komt. Afbeelding: NASA / Goddard / Chris Meaney.
ARM De missie kan bovendien gezien worden als een belangrijke leerschool voor toekomstige missies van NASA. Denk dan met name aan ARM (Asteroid Redirect Mission). Tijdens deze missie wil NASA een grote kei van het oppervlak van een planetoïde halen, in een baan rond de maan plaatsen en vervolgens astronauten naar de kei sturen om deze te bestuderen en stukjes ervan naar de aarde te brengen.
Het moge duidelijk zijn: OSIRIS-REx belooft een prachtige missie te worden die een schat aan informatie op kan leveren over het jonge zonnestelsel en de samenstelling van planetoïden en bovendien de opmaat vormt naar zoveel meer. En de missie start dus binnenkort. We kunnen niet wachten!

Jupiter's moon Europa might be able to support life even if there's little or no volcanic activity under the satellite's icy shell, a new study suggests.
A salty ocean of liquid water is believed to lie beneath Europa's icy exterior. Scientists think this ocean could be habitable, if it harbors the required chemical building blocks and the right proportion of elements to provide energy for biological systems — the right ratio of oxygen to hydrogen, for example.
The new study suggests that there is, indeed, enough of that energy. A research team led by Steve Vance, of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, found that, even without taking possible volcanic processes into account, Europa likely produces 10 times more oxygen than hydrogen, just as Earth does.
According to the team's calculations, Europa's hydrogen is generated as seawater reacts with rock in the moon's crust. Europa has cooled slowly over the eons, forming new cracks in the crust that expose more rock to seawater, thus generating more hydrogen, the researchers said.
Meanwhile, the oxygen would come from ice on Europa's surface. Radiation from Jupiter — which is far more intense than anything experienced on Earth's surface — breaks water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. The oxygen then reacts with other compounds in the water as well as the hydrogen. As the oxidants sink, they get recycled into Europa's interior, and then into the ocean, study team members said.
Until now, many planetary scientists thought that Europa, kneaded by Jupiter's gravity, would be volcanically active. After all, the neighboring moon Io is the most volcanically active body in the solar system; Jupiter's gravity and tidal forces deform Io's crust and mantle, generating huge amounts of heat.
Something similar could be happening at Europa, but nobody knows for sure if it is. Much speculation about possible Europan life envisions a biosphere that resembles the clusters of life found near hydrothermal vents on Earth's ocean floor. But the new research suggests that volcanism isn't necessary to cycle chemicals through the ocean, and thus is probably not necessary for living things to survive, study team members said.
The study was published online last week in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.
UFO hunters claim to have spotted yet another unidentified object passing close to the International Space Station.
The footage, posted on YouTube by SecureTeam10, appears to show a streak of light captured by the cameras on-board the ISS.
Hundreds have commented on the video, offering their thoughts on what the object could be.

According to the video’s narrator, SecureTeam received the footage via email from someone who was combing through hours of recordings of ISS live streams.
‘This amazing footage of the ISS…has got me very excited,’ said Tyler from SecureTeam.
It shows a streak of light passing behind the International Space Station when the orbiting base is in the shadow of the Earth.
The burst of light appears in the background for just a few seconds, changing colour from white to red before disappearing.
‘When you look at this thing up close, it comes directly up out of nowhere, out of the darkness of space,’ explains the video's narrator.
He proclaims: ‘It can’t be a fireball, ‘cos there’s no air in space – hence there can’t be any fire,’ before adding: ‘My mind is just blown. What is this thing?’.

WHY WE SEE UFOS NEAR THE ISS
Sightings of this kind are not uncommon, and Nasa has spoken out in the past to explain that the 'UFOs' and other phenomena spotted in the ISS footage often have simple explanations.
In the case of the'fireball', the object could be a meteor or space debris – such as a discarded stage of a rocket launch – burning up as it enters Earth’s atmosphere.
Other 'objects' may be a result of reflections from the space station windows, structures from the ISS itself, or lights from Earth.
The skies above the home planet are becoming increasingly busy, with communications and research satellites collecting and relaying data for modern life.
The footage comes from a recorded stream of the ISS captured on Tuesday, and can be seen by fast forwarding to 15:25 of the recorded stream.
The consensus among YouTubers is a meteor or space debris – such as a discarded stage of a rocket launch – burning up as it enters Earth’s atmosphere.
More grandiose claims reported recently by UFO hunters include evidence of secret 'missile launcher' aboard the space station.
The images captured from Nasa's live feed sent conspiracy theorists into a frenzy, claiming it shows an 'interesting UFO or missile' being released from the ISS.
However, the footage coincided with the planned release of a number of cube satellites from the station.
In possibly the most bizarre claim, UFO-hunters said they had found evidence of a trail left behind during the departure of time-travelling aliens.

In two bizarre explanations, conspiracy theorists proposed that the ‘energy beam’ had come from a UFO leaving the ocean, or that it may have been a wormhole used to transport aliens through time.
In the footage, the round object can be seen just to the left of centre. It stays in one position for a short time before ascending upward and off-screen.
The phenomenon was first spotted by Nicholas D'Amario, who reported it to UFO spotting site MUFON.
It was then picked up by outspoken alien hunter Scott C. Waring of UFO Sightings Daily earlier this week.
He also points out the subsequent energy beam that ‘shot up from the Earth toward the UFO’s former location.’

‘Also a UFO is seen, but its to [sic] small to be the earth, may possibly be Jupiter, since its [sic] very visible in the night sky right now.'
‘Hard call. That light however…its [sic] thickness its [sic] incredible. Covering a width of hundreds of miles. It must have come from the ocean, and left so fast it left a visible trail for a few seconds,’ Waring continues.
‘Then…it could have been a wormhole, a long tunnel to transport someone or something a far distance. We see the tunnel made then disappear. Nothing to worry about, just time traveling aliens.’
Sightings of this kind are not uncommon, and Nasa has spoken out in the past to explain that the 'UFOs' and other phenomena spotted in the ISS footage often have simple explanations.
Earlier this month, a Nasa spokesperson told MailOnline: 'Reflections from station windows, the spacecraft structure itself or lights from Earth commonly appear as artefacts in photos and videos from the orbiting laboratory.'
More grandiose claims reported recently by UFO hunters include evidence of a trail left behind during the departure of time-traveling aliens. The skies above the home planet are becoming increasingly busy, with communications and research satellites collecting and relaying data for modern life.
The most recent claim comes days after another ‘craft’ was spotted in an ISS live feed just before the transmission mysteriously went down.
It has prompted debate among conspiracy theorists who believe the feed was cut intentionally as part of an alien cover-up being conducted by Nasa.
In the clip, a glowing horseshoe-shaped object appears to be floating toward the ISS while rotating on the horizon.
The feed is then apparently cut for around an hour before it resumes and a much smaller white light can be seen in the distance.
Conspiracy theorists say this may be the same craft that has since moved away - dismissing the idea that it could be lens flare or even the moon.
But the footage that left some alien chasers doing somersaults with excitement has crashed back to Earth with a bang after being exposed as nothing more than a hoax.
The bizarre YouTube video, which clocked more than 109,000 views in just a few days, was suggested as showing a glowing UFO being pulled into a swirling cloud vortex as if being transported to another dimension.
It was initially branded the “best ever to emerge online”.
But UFO hoax busters soon rounded on the hoax, the latest in a series of CGI clips that have attempted to dupe the internet.
The video was uploaded by Misterio Canal (Mystery Channel) which appears on a number of UFO hoax blacklists.

The slatings continued with another saying: “This is so false that you could put it in a Disney movie.”
The channel has nearly 60,000 subscribers and hoax busters complain such films are being made to raise cash through YouTube advertising by conning viewers.
But, oddly, some viewers of the Spanish-language video, with a title that translates to “Dimensional portal in the sky absorbs a UFO,” thought the footage was real.
The clip starts with white clouds swirling in a double spiral pattern in the sky.
A white circular shape is then seen flying towards the shrinking heart of the vortex, before both disappear.
A cameraman is heard saying “that is just insane” on the film.
One viewer said hopefully: “It’s definitely aliens this time.”
Another said: “Sceptics always looking for proof, they want an alien to appear on your doorstep.”
In January another confirmed UFO hoax channel Section 51 2.0 uploaded a similar clip claiming to show a UFO “jumping dimension” by entering into a vortex above CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Geneva, Switzerland, allegedly filmed by two American tourists.

A RESPECTED astronomer sensationally suggested NASA has been covering up the existence of a second sun in our solar system and the fabled Nibiru planet, during a live broadcast.
Conspiracy theory websites have gone into overload following comments made by seasoned astronomer Paul Cox during a live broadcast of Mercury transiting the sun.
Mr Cox, a presenter for the respected online Slooh Telescope channel, which broadcasts live shows to coincide with significant astronomical events, made the comments as Mercury was filmed as a tiny dot passing over the surface of our sun.
Nibiru, or Planet X, is an alleged huge planet with a vast orbit, that conspiracy theorists claim will one day pass so close to Earth that its gravitational pull could break havoc on our planet, triggering earthquakes and other catastrophic events.
Believers of the conspiracy claimed they were right earlier this year after NASA announced there was a new planet, nine times the size of Earth, lurking at the edge of our solar system.
Now, Mr Cox’s remarks have added to the belief it is real.

Speaking about the view from the telescope, which showed the Sun and Mercury to the left, and part of another large glowing shape to the right, which some viewers thought was just the sun being reflected, he said: “You can see there, the sun is on the left.
“You can see the small black dot…that is Mercury.
“Now you may be asking yourself what is that large round thing to the right of our sun.
“That’s our second sun. I don’t know if you knew that we had a second sun but there it is.

Later, speaking about another frame which showed just a glow to the right of the sun, he added: “Oh wow, can you see that mysterious glow on the right hand side?

Some viewers suggested Mr Cox and the channel were just joking with them, but others saw him as having a “David Icke moment”, like when the former BBC1 Grandstand presenter came out as “The son of Godhead” on chatshow Wogan in 1991.
Regardless of how he made the remarks, it has prompted a flurry of conspiracy theory YouTube videos suggesting Nibiru is about to make its pass.
One video was made by blogger Jacob Israel, who claims not to be a conspiracy theorist, but is investigating the existence of Nibiru after “having dreams about it”
Mr Israel said: “Was he slipping that in, when he says NASA covers stuff up is that whats going on?
“Coming from somebody who is credible in the field and professional when you say stuff like that, it is meant to be taken seriously, it’s not a joke.”
He suggested they may just have been joking, but doubted they would be able to retract it.
He said: “If they were making fun of people who believe there is life outside this planet and there is more to these myths…I find it interesting that these astronomers would say this.
“I just find it crazy that within the last month or so they found a dwarf star and with planets very similar to ours that rotate around it and we are possible in a binary sysrtem and all this crazy stuff that I dreamed about may be real.
“And, of course, the people that believe there may be a possible planet, a dwarf star that may be heading towards us that may affect climate change and make things a lot harder for us, which would explain Jade Helm and underground bunkers.
“I know I sound a lot like a conspiracy guy, but there was a reason I was brought into this..when you have a professional, someone who is respected in the field, say such a thing, what is it they are not telling us and why won’t they be frank.”

Complotwebsites zijn in rep en roer over uitspraken die de doorgewinterde astronoom Paul Cox heeft gedaan tijdens een webcast over de Mercuriusovergang. Hij deed zijn uitspraken op het moment dat Mercurius als stipje over de zon trok.
“Zie je die mysterieuze gloed aan de rechterkant?” vroeg hij. “Denk je dat het de mysterieuze planeet Nibiru is die in deze livebeelden is te zien? We verbergen dingen niet zoals NASA. We gaan het je straks vertellen.”
Tweede zon

Geslaagde grap?
Of het nu een geslaagde grap was of niet, op veel complotwebsites verschenen filmpjes waarin wordt gesuggereerd dat Nibiru op het punt staat de zon te passeren, aldus de krant.
Volgens sommigen waren de Babyloniërs al op de hoogte van het bestaan van een tiende planeet, die Nibiru werd genoemd. Deze planeet zou een zeer langgerekte elliptische baan hebben en daardoor eens in de 3600 jaar in de buurt van de aarde komen.
Hieronder kun je de webcast van Slooh over de Mercuriusovergang terugkijken. Vanaf 51:20 begint Cox te praten over de mysterieuze gloed rechts van de zon. Rond 3:19:08 stelt de astronoom dat deze gloed onze tweede zon is.
Op elk werelddeel bestaan er mythische verhalen over reuzenvolkeren. Ook in de Europese mythologie spelen de reuzen een belangrijke rol. Volgens het boek Genesis bevolkten deze mythologische reuzen Kanaän en werden ze Nephilim genoemd.
In de Griekse mythologie bijvoorbeeld zijn ‘de giganten’ schepselen van Gaia, de aarde als godin. Bij de Griekse dichter en zanger Homerus (8e eeuw voor Christus) zijn de giganten een aan de goden verwant volk.
Zondvloed
De Nephilim waren ‘mannen van zeer grote gestalte’. De Israëlieten beschouwden zichzelf als sprinkhanen in vergelijking met de Enakieten, die volgens Numeri 13:33 ‘van de reuzen’ waren. De Nephilim worden voor het eerst genoemd in verband met de tijd van Noach.
Volgens schrijver Aaron Judkins, bekend van History Channel, moeten we begrijpen dat er ‘goden’ op de aarde waren voor de zondvloed uit de tijd van Noach. Hij meent dat ze in de toekomst zullen terugkeren en zich bekend zullen maken.
Belangrijke vraag
In het verleden hadden deze goden gemeenschap met aardse vrouwen en brachten ze een subras voort: de reuzen. De namen van deze oude goden zijn terug te vinden in de Griekse, Romeinse en Babylonische mythologie, aldus Judkins.

Nothing happened for the first hour and a half and it was still really hot so I was getting ready to go inside and chill out. This is a good example of hanging in there because three different events happened. I got some footage of objects in the north valley which led to these ones over in Henderson. While this was happening another event started on a mountain about nine miles from my home. I really like this particular video though because it clearly shows a minimum of three UFOs together brightly lit up. In reality, there were probably quite a few more that just stayed low key. I honestly believe that UFOs are here every single day in one form or another but we just don't see them all the time. Just one month before the Juno spacecraft arrives at the gas giant Jupiter, the most detailed radio-wave maps ever of the planet's atmosphere dig beneath surface-level clouds to reveal the whirling ammonia flows that help form its distinctive features.
Researchers used the upgraded Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope in New Mexico to probe 60 miles (100 kilometers) below the top of the gas giant's pervasive clouds — revealing a correlation between the colorful whirls and spots on the visible surface and the movement of gas below, which is driven by Jupiter's internal heat source.
"We in essence created a three-dimensional picture of ammonia gas in Jupiter's atmosphere, which reveals upward and downward motions within the turbulent atmosphere," Imke de Pater, an astronomer at the University of California, Berkeley, and lead author on the new work, said in a statement. Those maps reveal more detail than any previous radio map, spotting features just 800 miles (1,300 km) across, UC Berkeley officials said in the statement.
The researchers saw that ammonium-rich gases rose to form the upper cloud layers — ammonium hydrosulfide at about 200 Kelvin (minus 100 degrees Fahrenheit) and a cloud of ammonia-ice at 160 K (minus 170 degrees F), both of which can be seen with optical telescopes, officials said in the statement. The map also revealed gases with less ammonia sinking back down into the planet.
The areas with less ammonia, spread in a broad band around the planet, seem to correlate with "hot spots" on the planet's surface — areas that researchers have pinpointed as particularly bright in radio and infrared images. Those "hot spots" appear as holes in the planet's cloud cover, and look hazy in optical light.
"With radio, we can peer through the clouds and see that those hotspots are interleaved with plumes of ammonia rising from deep in the planet, tracing the vertical undulations of an equatorial wave system," Michael Wong, an astronomer who is also at UC Berkeley, said in the statement.
A new radio view of Jupiter at three wavelengths: 2 cm in blue, 3 cm in gold and 6 cm in red. Researchers created this image from 10 hours of data, averaged, so instead of fine detail the features are smeared by the planet's rotation. The pink glow comes from radiation caused by electrons trapped in Jupiter's magnetic field.

To build the new map, the researchers observed the many different wavelengths of radio waves emitted by the planet's atmosphere over time. While visible-light telescopes can get back images from the surface quickly, the VLA radio telescope has to observe for multiple hours. The telescope's upgraded sensitivity, combined with new data-processing algorithms, let the researchers unblur the smeared images that are made by the fast-moving planetary atmosphere. Those images can be combined with the Hubble Space Telescope's visible views of the planet and others to get a fuller view of the environment.
"We now see fine structure in the 12- to 18-gigahertz band, much like we see in the visible, especially near the Great Red Spot, where we see a lot of little, curly features," Wong said, referring to the massive storm on Jupiter's surface that's two times Earth's diameter. "Those trace really complex upwelling and downwelling images there."
On July 4, NASA's Juno spacecraft will reach Jupiter and begin studying its weather, composition and magnetic environment before diving down through the planet's deep atmosphere. These new Jupiter maps will help researchers fit those findings into the bigger picture of the planet.

A spectacular new image of Pluto shows rugged mountains, nitrogen-ice plains and, perhaps, a big cloud scudding through the dwarf planet's exotic skies. NASA even described the view as the "twilight zone" of Pluto.
NASA's New Horizons spacecraft captured the photo shortly after its closest approach to Pluto on July 14, 2015, when the sun was on the other side of the dwarf planet from the probe's perspective.
In the backlit twilight view, sunlight filters through Pluto's many-layered atmosphere and lights up certain features, including the towering Norgay Montes mountain range and the vast plain known as Sputnik Planum, whose surface is likely renewed every 500,000 years or so by churning convective processes.
Also illuminated is a bright wisp tens of miles across "that may be a discrete, low-lying cloud in Pluto's atmosphere; if so, it would be the only one yet identified in New Horizons imagery," NASA officials wrote in a photo description Thursday (June 2) that dubbed the image Pluto's "twilight zone." "Atmospheric models suggest that methane clouds can occasionally form in Pluto's atmosphere."

These features — mountains, plains and possible cloud — all lie in a sliver of sunlight, at the top limb of Pluto. But intriguing landscape details are also visible near the bottom of the photo, which depicts Pluto's night side.
"The topography here appears quite rugged, and broad valleys and sharp peaks with relief totaling 3 miles (5 kilometers) are apparent," NASA officials wrote.
New Horizons took the newly released photo with its Ralph/Multispectral Visual Imaging Camera about 19 minutes after closest Pluto approach, from a distance of about 13,400 miles (21,550 km). (Closest approach brought the probe within 7,800 miles, or 12,550 km, of the dwarf planet's surface.)
The photo features a resolution of about 1,400 feet (430 meters) per pixel, NASA officials said.
New Horizons is still beaming flyby data home, and will continue to do so through this coming fall. (The probe is currently about 3.2 billion miles, or 5.15 billion km, from Earth; such a vast distance makes transmission rates slow, due to the significant weakening of New Horizons' radio signal.)
The spacecraft is currently zooming toward a small object called 2014 MU69, which lies about 1 billion miles (1.6 billion km) beyond Pluto. If NASA approves and funds a proposed extended mission, New Horizons will study 2014 MU69 up close on Jan. 1, 2019.

A pair of orange fireballs streaking across the dark horizon. A mysterious object crashing into Lake Winnipeg. A nighttime visit from a “being with blonde hair and blue skin.”
These are among 1,267 reported UFO sightings across Canada in 2015, the second-biggest year for unexplained alien activity in the last 30 years.
The detailed Canadian UFO Survey released Monday by the Winnipeg-based group Ufology Research includes accounts of where, when and precisely what Canadians claim they saw in the sky last year.

Winnipeg-based UFO researched Chris Rutkowski tells CTV News Channel that UFO sightings have steadily increased since the Canadian UFO Survey began in 1989.
The trove of strange stories includes dozens of unexplained lights, aircrafts shaped like discs and diamonds, silently hovering UFOs and a few close encounters of the third kind.
In one case from Quebec, someone reported seeing three short “humanoids” with heads too big for their bodies and “big, black slanted eyes.” They then heard a high-pitched hum and woke up the next morning.
The stories may sound unbelievable, and researchers admit that many don’t hold up. Only about 12 per cent of the reports were classified as “unexplained.”
“The ridicule factor is quite certainly there, but we’re not saying the little grey guys are here. This is simply what people are reporting,” Winnipeg-based UFO researched Chris Rutkowski told CTV News Channel on Tuesday.
The data was collected from 17 sources across the country including Transport Canada, Canada National Defense, the National UFO Reporting Center and YouTube.
Witnesses included pilots, police officers and “other individuals with reasonably good observing capabilities and good judgement,” researchers wrote.
The only year with more UFO sightings than 2015 was 2012. Researchers believe that may have related to reports of a supposed “end-of-days” phenomenon from the Mayan calendar.
“We do know that the UFO reports continue to be made in growing numbers every year and this is just indicative that people are paying attention to what is in the sky. They’re not just looking down at their cellphones,” Rutkowski said.
Quebec led the country with 35 per cent of all UFO reports in 2015 -- a notable jump from previous years when that figure wavered between five and 15 per cent.
“It could be (that) the media are a little more attentive to the UFOs in Quebec,” Rutkowski said.
Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland all had an increase in UFO sightings in 2015. In terms of major Canadian cities, Montreal had the most reports with 97, with 78 sightings in Toronto and 69 in Vancouver.
The average sighting lasted about 16 minutes.
Ufology Research has collected the reports on a yearly basis since 1989. Since then, they’ve compiled 16,905 sightings.
Many strange lights, few alien beings
By and large, Canadians mostly reported seeing strange lights in the night sky. They came in a variety of colours (pink, orange, “brilliant white”) and shapes (orbs, triangles), and some moved in curious zigzagging or stop-and-go patterns.
The data becomes particularly strange is in several isolated reports of one-on-one contact with alien beings.
In Montpellier, Que., a “humanoid” reportedly approached a house after lights were seen. In Kentville, N.S., an alien reportedly entered a person’s bedroom and held their shoulders. In Oshawa, Ont., someone reported being abducted aboard a spaceship (a note indicates “photos that don’t show anything.”)
In an attached essay on the data, researchers ponder what, if not proof of alien life, underlies the eyewitness reports.
“Is this phenomenon psychological, sociological, cultural, and/or physical? Is it our contemporary culture’s storytelling? Is it our collective psychological and social mythology generating what myths have generated since ancient times, answers to our desires, visions of our nightmares, and insights into what our future may hold? Or is the phenomenon something else? Physical objects created by our species or another form of life we cannot beginto understand?”
Canadians more open to discussing UFOs
The steadily rising reports of UFOs could be linked to several factors: the popularization of drones, camera phones, laser pointers, at-home strobe lights. But Rutkowski suggests that the increase likely relates to the country’s collective curiosity.
“People are more interested. I think other people will talk to each other at a party or in school or university, and these are the types of topics people are interested in,” he said.
He added that, as writers like Stephen Hawking continue to pen popular books on outer space, humankind will continue to question the existence of extra-terrestrial life.
“Because space is so much in the public eye, I think people are paying a little more attention to the possibility that we are not alone.”
A Terrifying experience was recalled by an English woman who believed that she was abducted by an alien twenty years ago. Her alien encounter story will be detailed in a new book written by an expert and author of UFO Roy named Dutton. On July 16, 1981, around 1:45 a.m., Valerie Walters said she was driving home with her two friends, Vivienne, and Rosemary from a night out in Sheffield, United Kingdom. She was 26 years old at that time when a strange light hovering in the sky started to appear that terrified them.
Moments later, a massive extraterrestrial aircraft flying directly above their car. Though she cannot remember what happened next, she is certain that there was a beeping noise that made her very sleepy. As soon as she woke up, she noticed that her friends were gone. So, she came out of the car to look for them. Before she heard a strange voice, the car suddenly disappeared. The mysterious voice reminded her not to be afraid. Her head went red as she felt like she was being vacuumed after hearing the voice. She was already in front of some mysterious beings the next thing she knew. She recalled being in a white wedge-shaped room with two creatures, both with hypnotic blue eyes and shoulder length dark hair. Walters admitted that she and her friends reported the horrible extraterrestrial encounter to the police, but their case was not handled seriously. As with her friends, they cannot entirely recall what happened.
Alien abduction stories are not rare in humans. In fact, the Walters’ story is not the first case. According to the Inquisitr, it started in the 1950s, when people reported having been abducted by aliens in the “UFO Case Book.” In 2005, Donna Lee claimed to lose her baby after she and her husband were abducted by aliens repeatedly. Another man, in the same year, also claimed that aliens abducted him after spotting a strange object in his backyard.
I was home, in backyard looking with my wife thru telescope meade etx-70. I was looking for M51 whirlpool galaxy when noticed triangle shaped siluette hovering. then suddenly fast changed direction to right (east) then stopped. I called my wife to see. We was able to track that one object for about 15 minutes, then another triangle shaped UFO came right next to first one and both of them had lights, all around object. Then we saw clearly that both of them were triangle shaped UFO’s. Then for about 50 minutes we able to track them on sky, for moments we lost them from site because they were so fast, and they have unpredictable directions, they was flying straight then sharp turns, then sudden stop, but we able to find them again. We didn’t see them with naked eyes, just with telescope so I don’t know that they were in our atmosphere or in space.
First time to me, it looked like a airplane B2 or F117 but planes can’t hover and change directions like that. Hovering, fast moves, unpredictable directions, fast start and sudden stop, and hovering again. I was excited, so as my wife. that is her first time to see something, for me that was the last, but saw few times strange lights and objects earlier.
About 1 hour 5-10 minutes later, they just turned off the lights and disappeared from our sight.
From that day I’m always using astro cam and laptop in case I see something strange again.
WETENSCHAPEen vuurbal heeft de nachtelijke hemel boven de Amerikaanse staat Arizona gisteren enkele seconden lang doen opklaren. De oorzaak was een ontploffend brokstuk van een planetoïde. Video's van NASA tonen de indrukwekkende lichtflits, die de All-Sky-camera's van de ruimtevaartorganisatie een tijdlang volledig verblindde.
De lichtflits was tien keer zo helder als een volle maan en ging naar verluidt gepaard met enkele supersonische knallen. De ontploffing was voelbaar op de grond. Schade lijkt er niet te zijn, al achten wetenschappers de kans groot dat er meteorieten op aarde zijn terechtgekomen.
NASA schat dat het brokstuk 1 à 2 meter groot was, en dat het met 64.700 kilometer per uur onze dampkring binnenkwam.

RUIMTEVAART SpaceX-topman Elon Musk zit doorgaans niet om een gewaagde uitspraak verlegen, en ook op de developersconferentie Code 2016 liet hij weer van zich horen. Niet voor het eerst had Musk het over zijn plannen om mensen naar Mars te sturen. Voor het eerst is er nu ook een concrete timing: de eerste Marsreizigers zullen gelanceerd worden in 2024, om een jaar later op de rode planeet te arriveren. Dat meldt Forbes.
Musk was op de conferentie aanwezig om de recente ontwikkelingen toe te lichten van zijn pogingen om raketten opnieuw te doen landen. SpaceX is daar dit jaar al meermaals in geslaagd. De bedoeling van het project is delen van een raket te kunnen hergebruiken, om de kosten van ruimtevaart drastisch te doen dalen. Tegen het einde van de zomer hoopt het bedrijf een eerste raket met gerecupereerde onderdelen te lanceren.
Nog dit jaar wil Musk voor het eerst ook de grotere Falcon Heavy-raket lanceren. Die was aanvankelijk gepland voor 2012/2013, maar is nu nog steeds in ontwikkeling. Volgens Musk wordt de Falcon Heavy de krachtigste raket sinds de Saturn V die voor het eerst mensen naar de maan bracht.
Kolonisering
Al deze plannen leiden voor Musk naar het ultieme doel: naar Mars reizen. Tijdens de IAC-conferentie in september zal hij zijn langetermijnplannen voor de kolonisering van Mars bekend maken, maar op Code 2016 lichtte hij al een tipje van de sluier.
Zoals bekend wil Musk in 2018 een Dragon naar Mars sturen. Na die eerste lancering, zo voegde hij er nu aan toe, plant het bedrijf een nieuwe lading naar de rode planeet te sturen telkens als de banen van de aarde en Mars dat toelaten. Die gelegenheid is er eens om de 26 maanden.
In 2024 hoopt het bedrijf dan de eerste mensen naar Mars te sturen. Al moet zelfs Musk toegeven dat er omtrent dat plan nog wat onzekerheden bestaan.
Gesteld dat SpaceX erin slaagt vele mensen op Mars te krijgen, ziet Musk "grote ondernemingskansen" op de planeet, van "de eerste ijzerertsraffinaderij tot de eerste pizzatent". "Wat SpaceX nu probeert te doen, is een klimaat scheppen zodat ondernemers op Mars kunnen bloeien", klinkt het.
