This Telescope Will Probe Alien Atmospheres

If there's anything we've learned from scouring thousands of planetary candidates over the past decade, it's that finding life beyond Earth is an intensive search.

We've got observatories in space and observatories on the ground. We've got plenty of evidence of rocky planets in the habitable regions of their respective stars. What we're missing, though, is information about these planets' atmospheres. Is there oxygen or other life-friendly elements?

A group of astronomers now hope to fill this gap in our knowledge. They are raising money for a nearly $4 million project called the Polarized Light from Atmospheres of Nearby ExtraTerrestrial Systems (PLANETS) telescope. If funding, site approvals and construction all line up, they hope to have the 1.85-meter telescope ready by mid-2018.

The ultimate goal is to create a $600-million Colossus telescope with 60 independent off-axis 8 meter telescopes, all in a single structure, but that's down the road. First things first: the PLANETS telescope has less than a million dollars of funding to go before construction can begin.

The PLANETS Foundation has a team of astrophysicists and imaging experts on board, as well as several institutions and they are hoping to convince the astronomy community that they can make a valuable contribution to looking at potentially habitable planets. Jeff Kuhn, the leader of the consortium, talked about the recent discovery of a planet around Proxima Centauri as one example worthy of study.

"One of the interesting questions that we're all faced with is this planet around Proxima is very close to the star, and there's a lot of interest in understanding whether planetary atmospheres can exist in those conditions," said Kuhn, who is also a professor at the University of Hawaii's institute of astronomy, in an interview with Discovery News.

For a ground-based telescope, light is both an enemy and a friend. It can see light from distant stars and planets, but the atmosphere tends to scatter the light and make those objects more difficult to see. Telescopes themselves can also scatter light, even while collecting it.

The PLANETS telescope has an optical design that is supposed to minimize scattered light by eliminating a secondary mirror that often contributes to this problem. The mirrors are also intended to be lightweight and flex according to the light it receives from the star.

The off-axis telescope has several scientific targets, including atmospheres of planets in the solar system, atmospheres of exoplanets, protoplanets being born, and biosignatures (chemical signatures of life) on potentially habitable exoplanets.

Site approvals are currently being sought for an existing building on Hawaii's Haleakala, a location also known for hosting observatories such as Pan-STARRS and the Zodiacal Light Observatory. For more information on the project, visit the PLANETS Foundation website.

New Study Confirms: Our Universe is a Hologram

Are we living in a hologram? Energy fields are decoded by our brains into a 3D picture, to give the illusion of a physical world.

Despite its apparent materiality, the universe is a kind of 3-D projection and is ultimately no more real than a hologram. And some recent scientific discoveries support the conclusion that the universe is one big holographic projection.

The building blocks of reality are behaving in ways which are inexplicable and can only make sense if we think of the universe in terms of a holographic field, not an empty container filled with objects.
A recent study published in Nature suggests that the universe may be one big projection, according to their simulations.

As the paper states: In 1997, theoretical physicist Juan Maldacena proposed [1] that an audacious model of the Universe in which gravity arises from infinitesimally thin, vibrating strings could be reinterpreted in terms of well-established physics.

The mathematically intricate world of strings, which exist in nine dimensions of space plus one of time, would be merely a hologram: the real action would play out in a simpler, flatter cosmos where there is no gravity.

Maldacena’s idea thrilled physicists because it offered a way to put the popular but still unproven theory of strings on solid footing — and because it solved apparent inconsistencies between quantum physics and Einstein’s theory of gravity.

It provided physicists with a mathematical Rosetta stone, a ‘duality’, that allowed them to translate back and forth between the two languages, and solve problems in one model that seemed intractable in the other and vice versa (see ‘Collaborative physics: String theory finds a bench mate‘).

But although the validity of Maldacena’s ideas has pretty much been taken for granted ever since, a rigorous proof has been elusive.

In two papers posted on the arXiv repository, Yoshifumi Hyakutake of Ibaraki University in Japan and his colleagues now provide, if not an actual proof, at least compelling evidence that Maldacena’s conjecture is true.

In one paper [2], Hyakutake computes the internal energy of a black hole, the position of its event horizon (the boundary between the black hole and the rest of the Universe), its entropy and other properties based on the predictions of string theory as well as the effects of so-called virtual particles that continuously pop into and out of existence.

In the other3, he and his collaborators calculate the internal energy of the corresponding lower-dimensional cosmos with no gravity. The two computer calculations match.

“It seems to be a correct computation,” says Maldacena, who is now at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey and who did not contribute to the team’s work.

In other words, our world is a projection of infinitesimally small vibrating strings which gives rise to the appearance of a physical world. Our world is a shadow of the real world where the activity is actually taking place.

As an article in Discover Magazine states reports, physicist Brian Greene believes that properties at the black hole’s surface — its event horizon — suggest the unsettling theory that our world is a mere representation of another universe, a shadow of the realm where real events take place.

Even weirder than a holographic universe is the idea that we live in massive computer simulation. We’ve seen the Matrix, right?

Nick Bostrom, a philosophy professor at the University of Oxford, argues that we are almost certainly living within a computer simulation. Right now we have been able to produce very tiny simulations of the universe.

To that end, they’ve created an ultra-small version of the universe that’s down to the femto-scale. Interestingly, the researchers consider their simulation to be a forerunner to more powerful versions in which molecules, cells, and even humans themselves might someday be generated.

Video – Impossible vanishing stars could be signs of advanced alien life

It’s a cosmic game of hide-and-seek. A team of astronomers say that the next search for advanced extraterrestrial civilisations should look for stars – or even galaxies – that have vanished without a trace, as anything so unexplainable could only be due to life far more intelligent than us.

Beatriz Villarroel at Uppsala University in Sweden says this crazy idea has been gnawing at her since her first year of graduate studies. Now she and two undergraduates have finally taken the plunge. They scoured multiple surveys of the night’s sky by eye in order to see if any of nearly 300,000 light sources disappeared from one survey to the next.

So far the results are mixed. The team found one interesting artefact that looks like it might have vanished, but they can’t be sure. “It was a depressing case in the sense that we neither could reject it and neither could we say that it was a real candidate,” says Villarroel. Although the team checked for so-called false positives, throwing out hundreds of similar disappearing objects, this one withstood all tests – but only just.

Even if the disappearance is real, there could still be an astrophysical explanation. Quasars – the bright centres of galaxies powered by supermassive black holes – can shut down in less than a decade and drop drastically in brightness. Stars, too, can be highly variable.

That’s why Villarroel and her colleagues plan to search for this missing object (and any others found in the future), on the largest telescopes. If it is still not visible, then they will be able to rule out most astrophysical phenomena and say with more likelihood that it has vanished. Only then will they begin speculating about extraterrestrial causes

“I think it’s a very reasonable thing to do,” says Jay Olson at Boise State University, Idaho. “It’s a deliberate search for something very unusual, which could be hiding in existing data across time. At this stage of the game, it’s a very limited search, but it illustrates well what can be accomplished.”

Unlike Tabby’s Star, a baffling star that dips in brightness and made headlines last year when astronomers suggested that “alien megastructures” could be the culprit, these objects would have no physical culprit behind their sudden disappearance – it’s just not possible for something to suddenly vanish from the universe without a trace. Instead, Villarroel and her colleagues invoke Arthur C. Clarke’s third law: “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”

So while other teams search for possible signatures of astro-engineering like the one suspected around Tabby’s star, Villarroel and her colleagues are searching for things that seem impossible. If they confirm a star that has vanished without an accompanying supernova explosion or a galaxy that has disappeared from view, there’s simply no physical explanation – save for aliens.

Video – A UFO destroys Israeli weaponised satellite on the launch pad

…this time the “smoking gun” is a foo fighter and energy weapon…it seems not everyone “out there” believes Greater Israel is a galaxy-wide proposition…

[Editor’s note: The event depicted in the photographs below is not our conspiracy theory. The UFO destruction theory of the “facebook” satellite, now that’s a conspiracy theory if I ever heard one, comes from NASA.

This is what they believe and, being who we are, they couldn’t simply let it go without pulling the tail as it were. We agreed, as we are inclined to do, to aid them in this task. g]

Launchpad explosions of rockets is a fairly common thing, after all, a rocket is really a bomb waiting to go off and even with very careful handling, they do sometimes blow up due to technical issues.

This explosion however is something altogether different. This was no mere explosion of a rocket while being fueled, this was a deliberate act of destruction.

Note that the explosion occurs near the top of the rocket, where there aren’t any fuel tanks, the explosion is also far hotter than would be caused by rocket fuel – note the bright white blob on the video bright enough to cause a lens flare (the four diagonal streaks). The rocket fuel burning comes several frames later and is quite different looking – the colours are reds and oranges with black and grey smoke, this is a secondary explosion where the rocket fuel was ignited by the primary explosion further up the rocket.

Now for the really shocking bit – the craft responsible for this destruction was caught in the video – a small spherical object that flies from right to left on the screen and appears to have fired some kind of laser or beam weapon at the rocket.

So now the big question is this: Just what had the Israelis built into that satellite that someone decided had to be destroyed before it could be placed in orbit? Our working theory is that it was some kind of weapon, quite possibly a laser as we received intelligence some time ago that a space based laser had been used to cause several mysterious explosions in Iran.

This is a story we will be delving further into and will report on further as we uncover more.

Utah witness takes multiple photos of disc UFO

A Utah witness at Salt Lake City reported watching a “black, disc-shaped” object that split into three objects, moved back as one object, and then quickly flew out of sight, according to testimony in Case 78355 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The witness, age 37, his sister, age 24, a 27-year-old brother and two sons, ages 8 and 10, were driving along I-15 just south of Salt Lake City at 9:20 p.m. on August 11, 2016, when the incident occurred.

“I was the first to notice a black object in the sky which seemed to be about three miles away, and about 1,500 feet off the ground,” the witness stated.“I made a joke to my boys to look there was a UFO.”

At first the adult family members thought that the object was a cloud.

“My sister said it’s just a cloud, to which I responded, ‘I know. I’m just trying to trick the boys.’ I did think it was weird that there was a single black cloud low in the sky and not all that far away. We watched it for a few minutes still talking about it going back and forth and whether it was a cloud because as we got closer, it seemed to have more defined edges and was solid.”

While still thinking it may be a cloud, the witness decided to start shooting photos.

“The pictures did not turn out well because it was with a cell phone a little past sunset and zoomed to the max. After taking several pictures and looking through what I took,I looked up and there were now three black classic UFO-shaped objects. Then two and then one again. I did not see them separate or come back together if that is in fact how they became three and then one.”

The object then began to quickly move away.

“It then seemed to pick up speed continuing north towards Ogden. Within seconds it was gone. My brother and I both thought the object was about 500 yards across and about half that tall. We all at first were not excited about what we were watching, but slowly realized it was no cloud and then when there were three horizontally and evenly spaced apart about 600yards we became real excited and kids a little scared. I don’t know what it was, but I know it was unusual. There was never a light on the objects. Just black.”

This video looks legit, and its 100% proof that UFOs do hide within clouds of their own making. This UFO looks like its made from the same non reflective black buildings I and others have found on every planet and moon in our solar system in NASA photos. The shape of this craft is unique, but not unexpected. I have found similar UFOs (click here) in the NASA archives. The fact that the UFO was not seen at the time is not a big surprise, since you can see people in the lower left corner of the photo, and none of them are looking up. Excellent catch, and it looks like the creators of these pyramids have returned home out of sentimental reasons. They be the ones who originally built they pyramids.

A UFO That Becomes Three Baffles A Utah Witness At Salt Lake City

A black, disc-shaped object was spotted splitting into three objects, moving back as one, and flying out of sight quickly, according to a witness in Salt Lake City, Utah.

According to the witness, the photos were in low quality as he was just using his cell phone while zooming to the max at a time when it was a little past sunset. After taking multiple photos, he was shocked to see there were already three black classic UFO-shaped objects. Moments later, he saw two and then one again. The witness said that he did not notice them separate or come back together, wondering how they became three and then one.

The reporting witness then observed it picked up speed towards the north, heading to Ogden. Just a few seconds, it disappeared. His brother estimated the object to be approximately 500 yards across and around half that tall.

According to the reporting witness, they were not excited about what they were watching at first, but slowly realized it wasn’t a cloud when they saw three horizontally and evenly spaced apart around six hundred yards. He added that they saw no light on the objects, just black.

He then reported their sighting to Mutual UFO Network and his testimony along with the photos was filed in Case 78355. Utah MUFON investigators are still investigating the case.

AMAZING UFO activity over Henderson, Nevada 3-Sep-2016

Here’s one really interesting video of a huge unidentified flying objects in the sky above Henderson, Nevada. This happened on 3rd September 2016.

Witness report:

 What a strange night! My wife is coming home tonight after spending seventeen days in Europe with her brother and sister. Her airplane doesn’t land until 11:20 pm so I thought I would get some UFO hunting in even though it was really windy. I left the camcorder inside and only took the night vision camera out because it does much better than the camcorder in windy conditions. I was filming numerous lights over at Nellis Air Force Base when all of a sudden I noticed some bright lights over in Henderson. As a matter of fact it was the same spot I filmed last night. This time, all I had was the night vision camera and what it caught was astonishing. I captured four UFOs in a bunch that were moving slowly to the left and moving around each other. This was extremely exciting for me because I don’t really have any night vision footage like this from that location. There is also a lot of regular air traffic which includes airplanes and helicopters but the UFOs will be easy for you to spot. I truly believe this video cannot be debunked.

A UFO Appears Out of Massive Lightning Storm

Social media users on Facebook have been offering wild speculations after a UFO sighting video was posted to the popular social networking website. The footage shows an unidentified flying object moving strangely across the sky during a lightning storm and while wind funnel whipped through the storm.

While the storm brings havoc to the residents nearby, a UFO suddenly appeared at the bottom of the video frame moving across the sky as a bolt of lightning rages the area.

However, the origin of the footage is yet to be known. Still, many social media users giving speculations about the identity of the UFO after the clip was shared thousands of times. Puzzled viewers have speculated it could have been an aircraft, but some are convinced it was an alien spacecraft. Others suggested it might be just a bird.

The latest footage of mysterious UFO surfaced just a few days a UFO of about the same size of a car was caught on camera as it hovered above a family home in Cheshire.

A father-of-four Chris Henry caught on video a black object above the sky in Manchester. He recorded the video while waiting for his friend to arrive and pick him up from his Macclesfield home.

Family Photograph A UFO While On Yorkshire Moors

A Star Trek shaped UFO spotted flying in the sky above Yorkshire moorland. A family claimed to have snapped a photo of a dark gray object that seems to have a halo around it. Nicole Smith, 19, used her smartphone to capture pictures of the scenery during a family outing in Bronte waterfalls in West Yorkshire.

Nicole was with her parents Catherine and Shane when she accidentally caught the UFO on one of her photos. Catherine, 49, said that the family went for a day out in Haworth and decided to travel to the moor and stopover near a footpath leading to the waterfalls.

From where the car was parked, it was approximately two and a half mile walk.

On their way back from the falls, Nicole was snapping random photos of the scenery and sheep at around 5:30 p.m. using her mobile phone.

It was only when they were home Nicole noticed the strange object in the picture as she was scanning through the photos.

American optical physicist Bruce Maccabee, formerly employed by the U.S. Navy and now a leading UFOlogist, said that the image is tiny to get a good resolution.

The fact that it wasn’t seen at the time of capture, no information on distance can be obtained. Maccabee suspects that it could be some insect within ten feet from the camera.

Philip Mantle, former British UFO Research Association director, saw no evidence of any tampering or fakery of the photo. However, the object could be something very small that is too close to the camera lens because it has a type of halo around it.

Considering the location where the photo was taken, Mantle thinks the object could be a grass pollen or a bug.

Crash! Early Collision Could Explain How Earth Kept its Carbon

The early Earth could have been hit by a Mercury-like planet embryo deep in its past, letting the planet keep hold of the carbon necessary for life, a new study suggests.

The Experimental Petrology Rice Team — who study the origin, composition and structure of rocks at Rice University in Texas — re-created conditions inside Earth in the lab to help solve a long-standing mystery: how carbon-based life could have developed on Earth when early carbon would have boiled away or sunk to the planet's core.

"The challenge is to explain the origin of the volatile elements like carbon that remain outside the core in the mantle portion of our planet," Rajdeep Dasgupta, a co-author on the new study and petrologist at Rice, said in a statement. [What Is Earth Made Of?]

Dasgupta's group previously investigated how carbon would have fared on the early, molten Earth: Even if the carbon didn't vaporize into space, it would have been drawn into the metallic core after bonding with iron-rich alloys,Dasgupta said.

Researchers have postulated that carbon and other elements now present on Earth came from meteorites or comets hitting the planet.

"One popular idea has been that volatile elements like carbon, sulfur, nitrogen and hydrogen were added after Earth's core finished forming," the study's lead author, Yuan Li, now a staff scientist at Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, said in the statement. "Any of those elements that fell to Earth in meteorites and comets more than about 100 million years after the solar system formed could have avoided the intense heat of the magma ocean that covered Earth up to that point.

But the real-life proportions of elements on Earth don't seem to match up with comets and meteorites: "The problem with that idea is that while it can account for the abundance of many of these elements, there are no known meteorites that would produce the ratio of volatile elements in the silicate portion of our planet," he added, referring to a main component of rocks in Earth's mantle, the 1,800-mile-deep (2,890 kilometers) soup of magma and rock between the crust and core.

The researchers' experimental setup re-created the high-temperature and high-pressure interior of Earth by squeezing rocks with hydraulic presses. This method can emulate conditions about 250 miles (400 km) below Earth's surface, in the planet's mantle. The investigators decided to test whether the elements silicon or sulfur — found in the cores of Mercury and Mars, respectively — had any impact on the amount of carbon that would be bound up within Earth's core.

The scientists found that when sulfur bonded with iron under intense pressure — like that in Earth's core — it kept carbon from bonding with the molecules in the core as strongly, the researchers said in the statement. (In the paper,published in the journal Nature Geoscience on Sept. 5, the scientists said that "in reduced or sulfur-rich bodies, carbon is expelled from the segregating core.") In that scenario, the carbon could remain higher up, in Earth's mantle, and be available later on for the development of life instead of being locked away, the study said.

The researchers then compared the concentrations of carbon that emerged during the experiments with the concentrations of elements in Earth's actual mantle.

"One scenario that explains the carbon-to-sulfur ratio and carbon abundance is that an embryonic planet like Mercury, which had already formed a silicon-rich core, collided with and was absorbed by Earth," Dasgupta said. "Because it's a massive body, the dynamics could work in a way that the core of that planet would go directly to the core of our planet, and the carbon-rich mantle would mix with Earth's mantle.

"In this paper, we focused on carbon and sulfur," he said. "Much more work will need to be done to reconcile all of the volatile elements, but at least in terms of the carbon-sulfur abundances and the carbon-sulfur ratio, we find this scenario could explain Earth's present carbon and sulfur budgets."

Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo Unity Takes 1st Flight with Mothership

A Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo space plane took to the air under the wing of its massive mothership Thursday (Sept. 8), marking the first flight test for the private space travel company since a tragic accident in 2014. 

Virgin Galactic's second SpaceShipTwo spacecraft, the Virgin Spaceship Unity, soared over Mojave, California, in a captive carry test flight with its WhiteKnightTwo carrier aircraft, the Virgin Mother Ship Eve. Although the Unity spacecraft remained attached to its carrier plane for the entire flight, the test did mark Virgin Galactic's first return to airborne trials of SpaceShipTwo since the company's first spacecraft — the VSS Enterprise — broke apart during a rocket-powered test on Oct. 31, 2014. 

"Yesterday's flight was a culmination of years of hard work by our dedicated team, past and present, to build a company and build a beautiful spaceship," Virgin Galactic's billionaire founder Sir Richard Branson said in a statement today (Sept. 9). "Our tireless and dedicated team makes me so proud: Their commitment to the program, to safety, to our founding astronauts, and to our vision to open access to space led us to this first flight test." Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo vehicles are designed to carry two pilots and six passengers on launches into suborbital space. The spacecraft cannot orbit the Earth, but it's expected to provide passengers several minutes of weightlessness and expansive views of the Earth from space before re-entering the atmosphere and gliding to a runway landing. Virgin Galactic is selling tickets for the experience at $250,000 per seat.

Thursday's test flight took off from the Mojave Air and Space Port, with the VMS Eve carrying the VSS Unity to an altitude of about 50,000 feet (15,000 meters). That's the target altitude for the separation between a carrier plane and SpaceShipTwo during an actual launch. From takeoff to landing, the test flight lasted 3 hours and 43 minutes.

"Today's flight test is going well," Virgin Galacticrepresentatives wrote on Twitter during the flight. "It'll be longer than a typical mission, in part to test what happens when Unity gets very cold."

The test flight also marked another milestone for Virgin Galactic, Branson added.

"Any time a new vehicle is tested in the air is a big deal," Branson wrote. "The significance of yesterday's flight is that it is the first flight of a spaceship built entirely by The Spaceship Company and operated by Virgin Galactic." 

Virgin Galactic unveiled the VSS Unity spacecraftearlier this year, on Feb. 19. The spacecraft was already under construction by The Spaceship Company — a Mojave, California-based subsidiary of Virgin Galactic — at the time of the October 2014 accident.

The Enterprise was in the midst of a rocket-powered test flight when it broke apart over the Mojave Desert, killing co-pilot Michael Alsbury and seriously injuring pilot Peter Siebold. An investigation into the crash by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board found that Alsbury deployed the space plane's "feathering" re-entry system — twin tail booms designed to rotate upward during descent to increase drag and stability — too early. Virgin Galactic and The Spaceship Company subsequently built new safeguards into VSS Unity to prevent the type of accident that doomed Enterprise. 

The memory of that 2014 accident seemed to be fresh on the collective mind of the Virgin Galactic team, based on the company's statements.

"Today's an emotional day for us all. So grateful to our families, customers, & friends for sticking with us," Virgin Galactic representatives wrote on Twitter Thursday afternoon. "Couldn't open space without you."

According to Virgin Galactic, Thursday's captive carry test flight is the first in a rigorous series of upcoming trials for VSS Unity. But the company stressed that it will only move forward after a thorough analysis of this week's test. 

"With this flight in the books, our team will now analyze a mountain of flight data, learning what worked well and what could be improved for our next flight test," Virgin Galactic representatives wrote. "Only when that analysis is done, along with detailed vehicle inspections, some already-planned work, and potentially more captive carry flights, will we be ready to move into the next phase of test flight."

When the Ministry of Defence announced its decision to axe its UFO department, the Americans quickly stepped in to preserve it. 

And Pentagon officials knew just where to site offices for the new programme – neighbouring the UK headquarters of 20th Century Fox, famous for producing the sci-fi classics Alien, Independence Day, The Martian and Star Wars. 

Largely funded by US tax dollars, the office established in 2009 boasts a team of mainly American analysts, though it does include a small British contingent, who carry out their clandestine work as tourists outside enjoy the oasis of the square’s park.

Its work is overseen by a US colonel who visits regularly from Washington. 

“There was pressure from a similar unit in the Pentagon which wanted to incorporate the MoD unit,” said a serving military source last night. 

“It was decided to move the unit to Soho Square and I understand that it now has a number of American personnel,” he added. “The relocation was even accidentally published in the MoD’s magazine, though few noticed. 

“The operation took on a new role overseen by the Pentagon. It does, however, report directly to the MoD.” 

While X-Files form part of its work, its main purpose is grounded in stark reality: the militarisation of space. 

Of particular interest to the US is Project Condign, a highly classified MoD intelligence study of UFOs. 

Research by British scientists suggested some UFO sightings might be attributable to atmospheric plasmas and, further, that a better understanding of this might lead to some “novel military applications” including Star Wars-style energy beams. 

Nick Pope, who formerly ran the MoD’s UFO project, confirmed that Britain has no evidence of extra-terrestrial life.

But he added: “That’s not to say that we didn’t have some fascinating cases in our files. 

“Of around 12,000 sightings that the programme investigated, around five per cent remain unexplained.

And Project Condign would have certainly grabbed the attention of Pentagon officials.  

“Atmospheric plasmas may or may not be at least a partial solution to the UFO mystery,” he said.

“The weaponisation aspect of the phenomenon is exactly the sort of thing that might have caught the attention of the US government.

“When the MoD's UFO project was axed in 2009 a much more narrowly focused research effort may have taken its place, following up on Project Condign's recommendations that further work should be done on the potential for novel military applications. 

“An office undertaking such work might be regarded as sufficiently different from what went on before to avoid counting as misleading parliament, as it could be regarded as a new, standalone initiative.”

Liz Quintana, director of military sciences at the Royal United Services think tank said: “Britain has maintained its interest in space and the issue of UFOs and it would not surprise me if the UK and US had an office here. 

“Space is becoming increasingly contested and congested. Some of this is peaceful, some of it has dual use and some distinctly nefarious. Russia and China particularly are active.” 

Asked about the unit at 7 Soho Square, a spokesman at the Ministry of Defence said: “We don’t discuss individual units.”
