Scientists find huge 19-mile impact crater under Greenland’s ice sheet
Researchers recently identified a huge bowl-shaped crater measuring a staggering 19 miles (31 km) across under half a mile of Greenland ice. The immense crater was likely formed by the impact of a mile-wide iron meteorite, which must have unleashed 47,000,000 times the energy of the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima at the very end of WWII. The biggest question on everybody’s mind right now is when it all happened.

Kurt Kjær, a Professor at the Natural History Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen, suspected an impact crater might be hidden away under Greenland’s ice after NASA radar images showed a massive depression of the bedrock beneath the Hiawatha glacier, in the northwestern part of the island.
In May 2016, one year after the satellite images were released, scientists flew over the glacier pointing a cutting-edge ice-penetrating radar onto the glacier to map the underlying rock. The 3-D images clearly show all the hallmarks of an impact crater — a 19.3-mile-wide circular feature with a rim around it and an elevated central region.
The crater’s basin is about 300 meters deep, suggesting it was perhaps made by a one-mile-wide meteorite. This immediately classes the impact site among the top 25 largest known craters on Earth. According to the researchers, the impact would have melted and vaporized approximately ~20 km3 of rock.
“There would have been debris projected into the atmosphere that would affect the climate and the potential for melting a lot of ice, so there could have been a sudden freshwater influx into the Nares Strait between Canada and Greenland that would have affected the ocean flow in that whole region,” co-author John Paden, Associate Professor of electrical engineering and computer science at Kansas University, told the AFP.

The meteorite was likely mostly made of iron, judging from geochemical tests performed on particles of shocked quarts collected from a nearby floodplain.
“Beyond the grains in the sediment sample that we interpret to be possible ejecta, no ejecta layer associated with this structure has yet been identified. Despite the absence of such additional evidence, an impact origin for the structure beneath Hiawatha Glacier is the simplest interpretation of our observations,” the authors wrote in their new study.

When exactly did the impact actually takes place is not at all certain. Kjær and colleagues are confident that the crater is no older than 3 million years, the time when ice began to cover Greenland.
“The age of this impact crater is presently unknown, but from our geological and geophysical evidence, we conclude that it is unlikely to predate the Pleistocene inception of the Greenland Ice Sheet,” the authors wrote in the journalScience Advances.
As for the lower limit, radar images show that the deepest layers of the glacier that are older than 12,000 years are very deformed compared to upper layers and are filled with lumps of rock. To be sure, researchers will have to use radiometric dating techniques on material from the crater — that means drilling through half a mile of ice. It might take a few years before this happens, however.
‘Oumuamua is the first interstellar object astronomers have detected in our solar system. For decades, scientists had been expecting to come across such an object, but it only happened in October 2017, while the Pan-STARRS 1 telescope on Haleakala, Hawaii was surveying near-Earth asteroids. Astronomers tried pointing NASA’s mighty Spitzer Space Telescope onto ‘Oumuamua, however, the comet-like object was too faint to observe directly — but this was a valuable result in and of itself.
According to a new study that worked with Spitzer data, previous estimates of ‘Oumuamua’s size have been too generous. In reality, the intriguing cosmic object is much smaller than scientists initially thought.
“‘Oumuamua has been full of surprises from day one, so we were eager to see what Spitzer might show,” David Trilling, lead author on the new study and a professor of astronomy at Northern Arizona University, said in a statement. “The fact that ‘Oumuamua was too small for Spitzer to detect is actually a very valuable result.”
Vents on the surface of the interstellar object probably emit jets of gases, propelling the object slightly. The jets were detected by measuring the position of the object as it passed by Earth in 2017.

Besides setting new upper and lower boundaries for the size of ‘Oumuamua (pronounced oh MOO-uh MOO-uh, meaning ‘scout’ in Hawaiian), the study also reveals new spicy details about our lone interstellar visitor. One rather amazing finding is that ‘Oumuamua is expelling gas, which acts like a small thruster pushing the small asteroid. This explains the slight changes in speed and direction of the object when scientists tracked it last year.
In the months following is discovery, astronomers conducted multiple observations with ground-based telescopes but also using NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. These optical observations reported large variations in brightness, suggesting that ‘Oumuamua has an elongated shape, resembling a cigar, and that it probably measures less than half a mile (800 m) across its longest side.
However, Spitzer’s instruments can see things in infrared, meaning it can measure how much heat ‘Oumuamua radiates — and this can be helpful in measuring the object’s size with better accuracy than optical evaluations alone could. By measuring infrared light emitted by an object, scientists can essentially measure temperature which, in turn, can be used to determine the reflectivity of an object’s surface — what’s technically called albedo.
The new study estimates what ‘Oumuamua’s diameter would be if it were spherical. Trilling and colleagues used three separate models, each with its own different assumptions about the object’s composition but which only slightly differed from one another, and ultimately came up with three possible diameters for ‘Oumuamua: 1,440 feet (440 meters), 460 feet (140 meters) or even as small as 320 feet (100 meters).

The findings suggest that ‘Oumuamua may be up to 10 times more reflective than the comets we can find our solar system. A typical comet will constantly change its albedo as its ice warms and turns into gas during its close approaches to the Sun. However, ‘Oumuamua likely traveled through interstellar space for millions of years before entering our solar system, far from a star’s ‘touch’. Once it actually made it close to the sun, ‘Oumuamua’s surface likely suffered some transformations. For instance, some of the released gas may have covered the surface of the object with ice and snow that increase reflectivity.
At the moment, ‘Oumuamua is beyond Saturn’s orbit and is exiting the solar system. But scientists expect other interstellar visitors to follow. In the meantime, data gathered on the asteroid could shed light on how planet form in the solar system.

A planet three times more massive than Earth may be lurking around the second-closest star system to our cosmic neighborhood. Astronomers say they have found evidence for a so-called “super-Earth” around the famous Barnard’s star — a small, faint dwarf star located less than six light-years away. Though we don’t know what this potential planet looks like, its close proximity makes it an excellent target for future telescopes to study in the long-enduring hunt for extraterrestrial life.
Plus, a planet around Barnard’s star is one that we could see someday soon. Though we’ve found thousands of planets outside our Solar System, most of these worlds — known as exoplanets — are usually impossible to see directly with our current telescopes. They’re so far away that they become completely overwhelmed by the light from their host stars. But planets around nearby stars — like Barnard’s star — are easier for our instruments to detect. One day, we could potentially distinguish the light reflected from this planet from the light of its host star, especially as bigger and more sophisticated observatories come online in the 2020s.
“That’s the key benefit of finding a planet this close,” Ignasi Ribas, an astronomer at the Institute of Space Sciences in Spain and lead author on the study, tells The Verge. “If we ever have the hope of being able to directly image planets, it’s got to be planets that are really close by because you need to separate them from their star’s light.”

Barnard’s star has long intrigued astronomers. Because of its relatively short distance from us, it appears to be moving through the sky faster than all the other stars. The star gets its name from E. E. Barnard, the American astronomer who measured this motion in 1916. Barnard’s star is also a very small and dim type of star known as a red dwarf. In fact, it is just 14 percent the mass of our own Sun, and it’s so faint that you need a telescope to see it. Though they are among the smallest stars in the galaxy, red dwarfs are also the most common. In the past few decades, astronomers have found more and more potentially habitable planets around these celestial objects.
Because of its closeness, Barnard’s star has become a popular target for exoplanet hunters. In the 1960s, an astronomer named Peter van de Kamp claimed to have found a Jupiter-sized world around Barnard’s star after studying how the red dwarf moved. At the time, it was a big claim since we did not have good confirmation that exoplanets existed yet. But the findings were eventually refuted and blamed on issues with the telescope van de Kamp used. Over the years, astronomers have ruled out the existence of planets in the habitable zone of Barnard’s star, which is the region around a star where temperatures are just right for water to exist as a liquid.
But this time, there may actually be something in orbit around the star just a little farther out from the habitable zone. An international group of astronomers used data from 20 years of observations of Barnard’s star, taken with seven different telescopic instruments, to find clues that a planet may exist. “We put together nearly 800 observations, using the most precise instrumentation in the world just to see this small planet,” says Ribas.
Specifically, the team looked at how Barnard’s star “wobbled” over time — a technique that astronomers use to find exoplanets when they can’t be seen. Since exoplanets are drowned out by starlight, astronomers have to use clever, indirect ways to tease out the existence of a distant world. One way is to watch as these planets pass between their host star and Earth — what’s known as a transit — which slightly dims the star’s light. However, this planet does not transit, so instead, astronomers looked at how the planet’s gravity is affecting Barnard’s star. Even small planets can push and pull on a nearby star, creating tiny “wobbles” that we can measure from Earth.
Ribas and his team noticed a pattern in Barnard’s star’s wobbling within the 20 years’ worth of data, which indicated a planet revolving around the star every 233 days. They estimate the exoplanet is about 3.2 times the mass of Earth, and its distance from the star puts it in what’s known as the snow line. That’s the region around a star where gases can condense into solids and water turns into snow and ice. This area is about four times farther from the habitable zone, and many astronomers think this is the best spot around a star for planets to form. “If it’s real, then this would be a strong confirmation, one of our leading theories of planet formation,” Keivan Stassun, an astronomer at Vanderbilt University who was not involved in the study, tells The Verge.

Still, we haven’t seen this planet directly, and though Ribas is confident in his team’s findings, he admits there’s always a tiny chance that the wobbles they saw can be explained another way. “We are not 100 percent sure the signal comes from a planet, but 99.2 percent sure,” he says. “But being this confident is sufficient to claim detection of the planet.”
So the obvious next step is to get a signal from the planet itself, which may be possible soon. “At this very near distance, we should be able to separate the light from the planet from the light of the star,” says Stassun. Being able to see the light from an exoplanet is huge because then we can study what’s in the planet’s atmosphere. And the gases surrounding a planet could tell us a lot about what’s on the surface below — perhaps even indicating whether or not life is present.
Since this planet is near the snow line, it’s not a particularly promising candidate in the search for alien life. But it will be a good exoplanet for astronomers to study. It could help them refine their techniques for distinguishing planets from stars and figuring out what’s in their atmospheres. And the tools to do this should be coming online within the next decade. NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, which is supposed to launch in 2021, should have enough sensitivity to study this planet further. And big telescopes, such as the Thirty Meter Telescope planned for Hawaii, may also be able to spot the planet.
Ribas says the best bet for seeing this world is a future telescope NASA is working on called WFIRST. The space telescope could potentially study large planets using a special instrument known as a coronagraph, which helps to block out the light of stars. Due to budget concerns, NASA has been looking at ways to reduce the cost of the coronagraph by reducing the number of masks and filters the instrument uses, according to Space News. But Ribas says a coronagraph is the most certain way to see this world. “It would be very efficient at removing the starlight,” he says. “If that kind of machinery is in place, we’ll be able to image the planet.”
For now, Ribas and his team will continue to monitor the wobbles of Barnard’s star to further strengthen their claim — one that now aligns with numerous works of science fiction. Stories like The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and The Garden of Rama feature planets around Barnard’s star as way stations for interstellar travelers. “It has for decades been a favorite imagined destination for human civilization at some point in the future,” says Stassun. “How tantalizing that this neighboring star is a neighboring solar system.”

There’s something big lurking beneath Greenland’s ice. Using airborne ice-penetrating radar,scientists have discovered a 31-kilometer-wide crater — larger than the city of Paris — buried under as much as 930 meters of ice in northwest Greenland.
The meteorite that slammed into Earth and formed the pit would have been about 1.5 kilometers across, researchers say. That’s large enough to have caused significant environmental damage across the Northern Hemisphere, a team led by glaciologist Kurt Kjær of the University of Copenhagen reports November 14 in Science Advances.
Although the crater has not been dated, data from glacial debris as well as ice-flow simulations suggest that the impact may have happened during the Pleistocene Epoch, between 2.6 million and 11,700 years ago. The discovery could breathe new life into a controversial hypothesis that suggests that an impact about 13,000 years ago triggered a mysterious 1,000-year cold snap known as the Younger Dryas (SN: 7/7/18, p. 18).

Members of the research team first spotted a curiously rounded shape at the edge of Hiawatha Glacier in northwest Greenland in 2015, during a scan of the region by NASA’s Operation IceBridge. The mission uses airborne radar to map the thickness of ice at Earth’s poles. The researchers immediately suspected that the rounded shape represented the edge of a crater, Kjær says.
For a more detailed look, the team hired an aircraft from Germany’s Alfred Wegener Institute that was equipped with ultra-wideband radar, which can send pulses of energy toward the ice at a large number of frequencies. Using data collected from 1997 to 2014 from Operation Icebridge and NASA’s Program for Arctic Regional Climate Assessment, as well as 1,600 kilometers’ worth of data collected in 2016 using the ultra-wideband radar, the team mapped out the inner and outer contours of their target.
The object is almost certainly an impact crater, the researchers say. “It became clear that our idea had been right from the beginning,” Kjær says. What’s more, it is not only the first crater found in Greenland, but also one of the 25 or so largest craters yet spotted on Earth. And it has held its shape beautifully, from its elevated rim to its bowl-shaped depression.
“It’s so conspicuous in the satellite imagery now,” says John Paden, an electrical engineer at the University of Kansas in Lawrence and a member of the team. “There’s not another good explanation.”
On the ground, the team hunted for geochemical and geologic signatures of an asteroid impact within nearby sediments. Sampling from within the crater itself was impossible, as it remains covered by ice. But just beyond the edge of the ice, meltwater from the base of the glacier had, over the years, deposited sediment. The scientists collected a sediment sample from within that glacial outwash and several from just outside of it.
The outwash sample contained several telltale signs of an impact: “shocked” quartz grains with deformed crystal lattices and glassy grains that may represent flash-melted rock. The sample also contained elevated concentrations of certain elements, including nickel, cobalt, platinum and gold, relative to what’s normally found in Earth’s crust. That elemental profile points not only to an asteroid impact, the researchers say, but also suggests that the impactor was a relatively rare iron meteorite.

Determining when that iron meteorite slammed into Earth is trickier.
The ice-penetrating radar data revealed that the crater bowl itself contains several distinct layers of ice. The topmost layer shows a clear, continuous sequence of smaller layers of ice, representing the gradual deposits of snow and ice through the most recent 11,700 years of Earth’s history, known as the Holocene. At the base of that “well-behaved” layer is a distinct, debris-rich layer that has been seen elsewhere in Greenland ice cores, and is thought to represent the Younger Dryas cold period, which spanned from about 12,800 to 11,700 years ago. Beneath that Younger Dryas layer is another large layer — but unlike the Holocene layer, this one is jumbled and rough, with undulating rather than smooth, nearly flat smaller layers.
“You see folding and strong disturbances,” says study coauthor Joseph MacGregor, a glaciologist with Operation IceBridge. “And below that, we see yet deeper, complex basal ice.” Radar images of that bottommost ice layer within the crater show several curious peaks, which MacGregor says could represent material from the ground that got incorporated into the ice. “Putting that all together, what you have is a snapshot of an ice sheet that looked fairly normal during the Holocene, but was quite disturbed before that.”
Those data clearly suggest that the impact is at least 11,700 years old, Kjær says. And the rim of the crater appears to cut through a preexisting ancient river channel that must have flowed across the land before Greenland became covered with ice about 2.6 million years ago.
That time span — essentially, the entire Pleistocene Epoch — is a large range. The team is working on further narrowing the possible date range, with more sediment samples, simulations of the rate of ice flow and possibly cores collected from within the crater.
The date range does include the possibility that the impact occurred near the onset of the Younger Dryas. “It’s the woolly mammoth in the room,” MacGregor says.
HIDDEN TREASURE A newly discovered 31-kilometer-wide crater, long buried underneath Greenland’s ice sheet, may be the remnants of an iron asteroid that struck Earth sometime in the distant past.
Planetary scientist Clark Chapman of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colo., notes that “there are plenty of roughly circular landforms on Earth of many different sizes, most of which are not impact craters.” Still, he says, the paper presents several lines of evidence that strongly support the conclusion that the object is a crater, including the shocked quartz and the topography.
As for the idea that a crater may have formed within the last couple of million years, Chapman says, it’s “quite unlikely.” Such strikes are rare in general, he adds, and asteroids barreling into Earth are far more likely to land somewhere in an ocean. “[And] it would be at least a hundred times less likely that it could have happened so recently as to have affected the Younger Dryas.”
Regardless of when the crater formed, it is “a straight-up exciting discovery,” MacGregor says. “And we’re just happy not to have to keep it a secret anymore.”
µThe mysterious object appeared as a “very bright light” that came up along the left side of the airliner before it “rapidly veered to the north”.
At first, the pilot of BA94 from Montreal to Heathrow thought she might have been looking at some kind of military aircraft.
Bright lights
But she was told there were no military exercises taking place in the area and the fast-moving object did not appear on air traffic control’s radar systems.
A second pilot, flying a Virgin Atlantic plane from Orlando to Manchester, confirmed the sighting, suggesting it might be a meteor or “another object re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere”.
He saw “two bright lights, [which] seemed to bank over to the right then climb away at speed”.
David Moore, head of Astronomy Ireland, favours the meteor theory. He told The Times he was “1,000 per cent sure” the mysterious light was a fireball, or a flaming meteorite, tumbling through the atmosphere.

One thing is certain: the truth is out there, and the Irish Aviation Authority intends to find it.
The organisation, which has launched an investigation into the 9 November sightings over Ireland’s south-west coast, has said it is unlikely that the incident involved alien life.
Yet these are simply the latest close encounters to fuel the imaginations of those who believe we are not alone.
The act of reporting a UFO sighting dates back to the 40s, with the first official account widely accepted to be that of a private pilot in 1947.
He reported seeing nine strange objects moving at speed across the state of Washington, comparing them to “saucers skipping on water”.
UFO hotline
There have been hundreds of alleged sightings – often involving unusual lights – since. Some are hoaxes, some can be explained by natural phenomena; others are seemingly genuine mysteries.
For years, people in the UK were able to report their sightings via a special Ministry of Defence (MoD) hotline.
The MoD eventually closed its dedicated UFO desk in November 2009, saying it served “no defence purpose” and was taking staff away from “more valuable defence-related activities”.
Declassified papers released by the National Archives in 2013 revealed the Ministry had logged 643 reported sightings in its final year, treble the previous year and the second-highest recorded since 1978, when there had been 750 alleged sightings.
The papers also contained reports from someone who had been “living with an alien” in Carlisle and sightings of UFOs over Stonehenge, Parliament and Blackpool Pier.
Further afield, cases such as the Roswell incident – the high-altitude weather balloon that crashed in New Mexico in 1947 and spawned a thousand conspiracy theories – show just how much interest the idea of UFOs can generate.

Indeed, a video of what some believe to be a UFO was recorded in Northern Ireland just minutes before the recent sightings by the two pilots.
The dashcam footage, recorded by a member of the public as they drove to work in Coleraine, showed what they described as a “bright object” shooting across the sky.
In 2014, a pilot claimed he had experienced a close encounter while flying a passenger jet at 34,000ft over Berkshire the previous year.
According to reports, the captain was so convinced that the “silver, rugby ball”-shaped object would smash into his Airbus that he ducked as it headed towards the cockpit.
The UK Airprox Board, which investigates near-misses in British airspace, said that no other aircraft had been in the vicinity at the time. It also ruled out meteorological balloons. No military radars picked up any sign of a UFO, however.
How to report a sighting
For those who think they have seen something, the British UFO Research Association is among the organisations which will analyse sightings.
The voluntary organisation, which has been running for more than 50 years, receives between five and 20 reports a week – though only a few of these remain a mystery.
“Up to 98 per cent of sightings can be explained if they are reported very quickly and with accurate information,” says national investigations co-ordinator Heather Dixon.
“We have a form on our website for people to report sightings which asks the relevant questions.
“Eighty per cent of all sightings are now photographed, [but] that doesn’t mean anything on its own – we have to have supporting information."
Dixon explains that in cases where there are photos, the UFOs can normally be explained. A low-quality photo is often the problem in more difficult cases.

She says that UFO sightings highlight how differently people can perceive and interpret something in the sky.
“If you see something and you have no way to understand what that is, you use imagery that you have downloaded over your lifetime.
“The brain has to do something to identify or make some kind of explanation for what is happening.
“So if someone has a strong belief in the subject, and the idea that there are cover-ups, then they will relate that to their sighting.”
But, she adds: “That’s not to say there aren’t mysteries.
‘You have to be objective’
“On a personal level, I am very sceptical, but I have had a handful of things happen to me – not UFO-related – that have been stranger and have made me think.
“But you have to be objective. You have to investigate and research in a meticulous way. What I have learnt is the more you learn about anything, the less you realise you know.”
For Robert Massey, deputy executive director at the Royal Astronomical Society, a meteor is the most likely culprit behind the latest sighting.
“The idea that it is something entering the Earth’s atmosphere – a meteor – is the most likely case,” he says. “It is perhaps an unusually bright one and that, I imagine, is what they have seen.”
Dr Massey adds that the speed of the object lends credence to the object being a natural one – such as a meteor – as opposed to something like debris from a satellite.
“That would also explain why it won’t be on the radar,” he explains. “Meteors are pretty high up in the Earth’s atmosphere – well above the altitude you’d expect for a commercial flight.
“There’s no reason to jump to the conclusion that it is any kind of spaceship. It will almost certainly have a more mundane explanation.
“But the thing that’s nice to take from this is that there’s an awful lot of drama in the night sky. “It just reminds us that even the things for which we do have an explanation can be pretty spectacular.”
Video of a flashing, glowing, and elongated light over Houston has been uploaded to YouTube, along with a long and detailed narration and witness description. The object had apparently been hovering in the nighttime sky for several minutes before the witness started recording:
Went outside for a smoke. Saw it and thought it was lightning. Sat back for the show, the night air was cool and sweet, and I was having a good day. But it didn't act like lightning and after five or ten minutes, I dragged my stepdad out of bed to see it. He saw it too. After a few more minutes of signaling the strange lights with various lights and flashes, he ran to get a camera. Long story short, no batteries. So he started using his phone. Once I felt we had a good amount of footage on his phone saved, I ran for my phone (Samsung S9+), it had a superior camera. But it's still grainy af. That's a little disappointing. The cameras at least picked up the flashing lights and my voice narration. The film cuts out because my camera spontaneously shut down. My fingers could have slipped, I was shaking like a leaf and you can hear how freaked out I am. The camera shut off on its own when I was at an awesome angle. It was overhead maybe a mile up, 300 yards long, moving in a slow triangle pattern and flashing. The camera picked up a strange pulsating aura of colors my eyes couldn't pick up. It responded to a halogen torch when I flashed back. It communicated. Footage lost. This is just 5 minutes from a 30 minute encounter I panicked and ran inside to make sure the video was saved. It was! I immediately uploaded it to YouTube and posted a link on my Facebook page. We went back outside to find it. It was hiding from spotlights. We flashed at it again then it pulsed and as the spotlights zeroed in, it flew off at high speeds quieter than a whisper.
Ps. I apologized to my stepdad for snapping. I was really freaked out. They are #real. We aren't alone.

After leaving the International Space Station last week, a Japanese cargo spacecraft dropped a small capsule of science experiments into the Pacific Ocean before falling to its fiery demise in Earth's atmosphere.
Before it was intentionally incinerated upon reentry, the HTV-7 cargo resupply ship spent 41 days at the International Space Station. The Expedition 57 crew used the station's Canadarm2 robotic armto send it off on Wednesday(Nov. 7). On board was theHTV Small Re-Entry Capsule(HSRC), a small cone-shaped capsule that would become the first Japanese spacecraft to bring experiments back to Earth from the space station.
Following a deorbit burn, the HTV-7 entered Earth's atmosphere on Nov. 10 at 4:14 p.m. EST (2114 GMT), and the little capsule separated from its mothership and began its own descent. It floated down to Earth via parachute and splashed down off the southern coast of Marcus Island, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) tweeted. Inside the HSRC were samples of protein crystals grown at the space station. These microgravity-grown crystals can be used to study the structure of the proteins in greater detail than is possible on Earth, and understanding their structures could help researchers develop new pharmaceutical drugs, NASA officials said.
During this mission, which was the first test flight of the HSRC, the little capsule demonstrated its flight capabilities as well as its ability to protect its internal payload against the extreme temperatures of re-entry. "We expect that these efforts will lead to securing flexibility in our future space flight activities," JAXA president Hiroshi Yamakawa said in a statement.
With a successful test mission under its belt, JAXA can start using the HSRC to bring science experiments back to Earth using a Japanese aircraft, rather than having to hitch a ride with SpaceX's Dragon capsule — the only cargo spacecraft built to survive re-entry. JAXA's next HTV cargo resupply mission is scheduled to launch to the space station in mid-2019.

The concept lander, perhaps the most complicated structure ever created using "generative design," was unveiled today (Nov. 13) at Autodesk University, a conference being held this week in Las Vegas.
Generative design is a relatively new approach that uses machine intelligenceand cloud computing to quickly generate a broad set of design solutions that fit within the specific constraints set by engineers. It enables design teams to explore a much wider design space while still being bound by manufacturing and performance requirements dictated by the team or environment, according to an Autodesk statement.
A commercial form of generative-design technology is available today in Fusion 360, Autodesk's cloud-based product development platform.

Organic-looking shapes
Generative design is often associated with 3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, which is well-suited for the complex, organic-looking shapes that the software produces based on user specifications.
For the lander project, the JPL team is using experimental generative-design technology for multiple structural components, including the internal structure that holds the scientific instruments and the external structure that connects the lander legs to the main payload box. The team has been able reduce the mass of the external structure by 35 percent compared with the baseline design they started with.

New designs quickly
A key benefit of generative design is that it enabled the JPL team to iterate their designs rapidly.
"As a design matures and new performance or environmental data comes in, generative design can enable our customers to create new designs quickly," Karl Willis, Autodesk's technology lead on the project, said in the statement.
Most design teams typically take two to four months to turn around a revised design. But by working with generative design, Willis added, that process can take place in just two to four weeks.

But even the scientists behind the project were pleased by how appealing and coherent a sound scape the photograph's data created. "It was almost alive in some sense. It was telling a story in a very natural way," Domenico Vicinanza, a physicist and sound scientist at Anglia Ruskin University in the U.K., told Space.com. "That was surprising." Vicinanza and his colleague Genevieve Williams of the University of Exeter in the U.K. specialize in turning data into sound. Most of their work focuses on the human body, for example turning ultrasound and CT scans into sound — but they didn't want to limit themselves to the medical. "We're also passionate about space," Vicinanza said. "Of course, we thought using music to describe certain characteristics of space exploration was fascinating and also, in some ways, natural."

The composition they created combines two different types of data from Opportunity's sunrise image. The melody of the composition comes from the visual data itself — the brightness of the sun and the amount of blue, in particular — panning from left to right in narrow strips across the image.
The low-frequency undertones, which are easiest to hear on a high-quality stereo system, are interpretations of the terrain at Opportunity's location when the photograph was taken, along the western edge of the Endeavour Crater. "We looked at all the bumps and all the terrain characteristics, and we mapped that to sound waves," Vicinanza said. "It's basically like jumping on top of Opportunity and taking a tour of the region."
The ability of a sound scape to combine those two types of inputs is, for Vicinanza, one of the most appealing aspects of turning data to sound. "There is no way of doing something like that with vision," he said. "Sound is an underutilized way of experiencing data." The process also makes that information accessible to people who have visual impairments.
Vicinanza said he also hopes the sonification will encourage people to think about sunrises — terrestrial and Martian alike — from a fresh perspective. "Sunrise is something so familiar. It is something we experience every day," Vicinanza said. "We kind of get used to it."
And, of course, there's now a more melancholy aspect to the sunrise image; scientists haven't received such a postcard from Opportunity since the rover went silent in June, when a global dust storm blocked the solar panels that power the robotic explorer.
When the dust began to settle in the middle of September, Opportunity's engineers began pinging the rover in hopes of getting it working again, but those efforts have been in vain so far. Scientists hope that a seasonal wind phenomenon called dust devils, which is due to last from November to January, may clear off Opportunity's solar panels and help the team re-establish contact.
It's no sound scape, but an answering beep from that rover would be the sweetest tone of all.

De oppervlakte van de aarde bestaat uit zeven grote tektonische platen en acht kleinere. Die platen verschuiven jaarlijks enkele millimeters (5 tot 85 millimeter), op een zeer traag tempo. Dat proces wordt aangeduid met de wetenschappelijke term ‘platentektoniek’. Wanneer de aardplaten verschuiven wordt er een beetje water mee onder de aardkorst getrokken. Maar dat beetje blijkt drie keer meer te zijn dan eerst gedacht werd.
Dat roept natuurlijk een aantal vragen op. Hoe komt het dat wetenschappers zich zo lang vergisten, wordt de inhoud van onze oceanen daardoor kleiner, en zal de aarde zichzelf uiteindelijk uitdrogen waardoor er binnenkort geen oceanen meer bestaan?
Wetenschappers veronderstelden jarenlang dat de hoeveelheid water die onder de aardkorst verdwijnt veel kleiner zou zijn. Dat komt omdat er ook wat water vrijkomt bij de beweging die de aardplaten maken. Er is geen water vermist, de inhoud van de oceanen bleef met andere woorden tamelijk stabiel. Dat veronderstelt dat de hoeveelheid die naar buiten wordt gestuwd ongeveer gelijk is aan de hoeveelheid die onder de aardoppervlakte verdwijnt.
Aardbevingen en tsunami’s
Voor onze oceanen maakt de grotere hoeveelheid water die de aarde opslokt dus geen groot verschil. Anderzijds speelt de hoeveelheid wel een belangrijke rol bij het ontstaan van aardbevingen en tsunami’s.
De aanwezigheid van water kan de temperatuur waarop gesteente smelt immers sterk beïnvloeden. Daardoor draagt het water onder de aardoppervlakte bij tot de ontwikkeling van magma –het vloeibare gesteente dat ook in de vorm van lava uit vulkanen stroomt. Die magma doet de platen trouwens ook bewegen. Wanneer de hoeveelheid magma groter wordt, kan een tektonische plaat plots sneller verschuiven. En door het enorme gewicht van de aardplaten kan de verschuiving een grote spanning creëren. Vervolgens barst die in één ruk los, in de vorm van een aardbeving.
De nieuwe bevindingen kunnen helpen bij het accurater voorspellen van zulke aardbevingen.

Vertragingen
Voor hun onderzoek bestudeerden wetenschappers hoe snel de trillingen van aardbevingen zich voortbewegen. Eenmaal die beweging vertraagt, ontstaat een subductiezone waarbij een oceanische aardplaat –zwaarder dan de continentale platen- onder een continentale schuift en water met zich meetrekt. Aan de hand van de vertragingen konden ze de breuken detecteren die zich vulden met water.
Tektonische platen
De zes grote tektonische platen zijn de Afrikaanse, de Antarctische, de Australische, de Euraziatische, de Noord-Amerikaanse, de Pacifische en de Zuid-Amerikaanse Plaat. Daarnaast zijn er nog acht kleinere platen.
AFPZo ziet het oppervlak van Barnard b er volgens astronomen uit.
WETENSCHAP & PLANEETAstronomen hebben een nieuwe ‘superaarde’ ontdekt op amper zes lichtjaren van de aarde. Dat is uniek, want het is de op één na dichtstbijzijnde exoplaneet. De planeet draait rondjes rond de Ster van Barnard en krijgt daarom de naam Barnard b. Zo staat te lezen in het wetenschappelijke tijdschrift ‘Nature’.
In de afgelopen twintig jaar ontdekten onderzoekers een paar duizend exoplaneten, planeten bij andere sterren dan de zon. Daar zitten veel ‘superaardes’ tussen: planeten die een flinke slag groter zijn dan de aarde en een paar keer zo zwaar. Uit onderzoek blijkt dat Barnard b minstens 3,2 keer zoveel massa heeft dan onze aarde.
Wetenschappers onthullen dat er geen leven mogelijk is op Barnard b. De planeet doet immers 233 dagen over een rondje rond zijn moederster, een zogeheten rode dwerg. Dat is een kleine, koele ster die maar weinig licht geeft. Daardoor krijgt de planeet maar 2 procent van de hoeveelheid licht en energie die de aarde van de zon krijgt.
Daarnaast is de afstand tussen Barnard b en de moederster klein: ongeveer 0,4 keer de afstand tussen de aarde en de zon. Hoewel de planeet zich dichtbij de moederster bevindt, is het op Barnard b bijzonder koud, zo’n -170 graden Celsius. Er is met andere woorden geen vloeibaar water, een noodzakelijke voorwaarde voor de levensvormen die we tot nu toe kennen.
“De ontdekking van de planeet biedt astronomen de mogelijkheid om theorieën over het ontstaan, de evolutie en de fysica van exoplaneten te toetsen”, zo zegt het European Southern Observatory (ESO). Een filmpje, gemaakt door het ESO, toont hoe het oppervlak van Barnard b er vermoedelijk uitziet:

Just as Harvard scientists weigh in on that massive thingamajig that zipped past the sun last year — the flat, elongated‘Oumuamua’was possibly a probe sent to Earth by “an alien civilization,” they said — British pilots flying home from Montreal have reported other UFOs off the coast of Ireland.
This time, the unidentified objects were bright lights, heading north, at “Mach 2” speed, they told air-traffic controllers.
But they might also have been extra-terrestrial vehicles, says Don Donderi, a retired McGill professor who has studied UFOs since 1965.
It wouldn’t be the first sighting, Donderi said. Some pilots have seen them up close.
“There are cases going back 50 years of pilots seeing what we call nocturnal lights,” Donderi said. “They provide some evidence that some of what people see in the sky and call UFOs are extra-terrestrial vehicles.”

“It was moving so fast,” the BA pilot said of the object that appeared along the left side of the aircraft “then rapidly veered to the north.”
It was “a very bright light,” she continued, that “disappeared at very high speed.”
The Virgin Airlines pilot, flying from Orlando to Manchester, reported the same thing, but described it as a “meteor or another object making some kind of re-entry.”
Whatever is was, it was enough for the Irish Aviation Authority to open an investigation under the “normal confidential occurrence investigation process.”
It was also enough for the Twittersphere, if not the stratosphere, to light up.
The news, including audio of the pilots’ conversation with Irish air traffic control, travelled across the globe, at Mach internet speed, while others turned to mockery.
“As a skeptic, I think it’s probably nothing stranger than flying leprechauns up to their usual mischief again,” said one commenter.
It was the same attitude taken by Neil DeGrasse Tyson, a renowned American astrophysicist and author, when asked to comment on the existence of extra-terrestrial UFOs. “Call me when you have a dinner invite from an alien,” he said.
But Donderi, who was a professor of psychology but now teaches a class called “UFOs: History and Reality,” says some sightings have been unnervingly detailed — and harder to dismiss.
“People have close encounters of the second kind,” Donderi said. “Pilots have reported seeing vehicles within 100 yards of them. They see an actual shape, an object suspended in the sky, hovering over them, with windows, surrounded by a luminous glow — and then it moves off abruptly.”
Some of the reports, by qualified individuals, backed up by instruments (like radar) turn out to be things humans can’t make, Donderi said.
“Machines that fly faster and manoeuvre more abruptly than (vehicles) we can make.”
He situates himself somewhere between the DeGrasse Tyson “establishment,” which denies there is any evidence of extra-terrestrial contact with Earth, and those who see in UFOs proof of the second coming.
The revelation in December of the U.S. Department of Defence’s now-defunct Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program, along with footage of pilots seemingly chasing UFOs, have bolstered Donderi’s beliefs.
Luis Elizondo, one of two Pentagon officials who resigned at the time because he felt the program was too secretive, described the objects they researched: “These aircraft — we’ll call them aircraft — are displaying characteristics that are not currently within the U.S. inventory nor in any foreign inventory that we are aware of,” he told CNN.
“Those who study it say that some of the UFOs are extra-terrestrial vehicles,” Donderi said Tuesday. “They’re here. And sometimes there’s interaction between aliens and people. There is evidence. But what it means and where we go from here, I don’t know.”
Donderi says humans find it easier to convince themselves there is no evidence, and prefer to see those affirming the existence of ETs as crazy, or seeking adventure or profit.
“If everyone realizes we’re being surveilled by extra-terrestrials who have better machinery than we do, we have a potential problem,” he said. “But any sensible person will say the first step in dealing with any problem is admitting it exists.”

Harvard-wetenschappers suggereerden onlangs dat ons zonnestelsel is bezocht door een buitenaardse ruimtesonde. Piloten maakten daarnaast melding van UFO’s voor de kust van Ierland.
Het ging om felle lichten die met Mach 2 langs de piloten vlogen.
Mogelijk waren het buitenaardse vaartuigen, stelt de gepensioneerde professor Don Donderi van de McGill University, die al sinds 1965 onderzoek doet naar UFO’s.
Ramen
“Het zal niet de eerste waarneming zijn,” zei hij. “Sommige piloten hebben ze van dichtbij gezien.”
Uit waarnemingen die al tenminste 50 jaar worden gedaan blijkt volgens hem dat in ieder geval sommige UFO’s buitenaardse schepen zijn.
“Diverse piloten hebben deze vaartuigen op minder dan 100 meter afstand waargenomen,” zei Donderi. “Ze zagen een vorm, een object in de lucht, met ramen, omgeven door een lichtgevende gloed.”

Sommige waarnemingen worden gedaan door getrainde individuen en ondersteund door instrumenten (zoals radar), merkte hij op, toevoegende dat het dingen bleken te zijn die mensen niet kunnen maken.
“Machines die sneller vliegen en manoeuvreren dan vliegtuigen die wij kunnen maken.”
“Ze zijn hier,” zei de gepensioneerde professor. “Soms is er sprake van contact tussen mensen en aliens. Er is bewijs.”
Makkelijker
Donderi wees erop dat mensen het makkelijker vinden om zichzelf ervan te overtuigen dat er geen bewijs is en mensen die het bestaan van buitenaards leven bevestigen liever afschilderen als gekkies of aandachtszoekers.
“Als iedereen beseft dat we in de gaten worden gehouden door buitenaardsen die over veel betere machines beschikken dan wij, hebben we een potentieel probleem,” zei hij.
“Maar om een oplossing te bedenken voor een probleem, moet je eerst erkennen dat het bestaat,” besloot hij.
Er is zo langzamerhand geen nieuwskanaal ter wereld dat geen aandacht heeft besteed aan de UFO waarnemingen van een aantal piloten.
Op zich is dat niets bijzonders, want piloten nemen al heel lang vreemde objecten in de lucht waar, dus waarom nu al die commotie?
Het lijkt erop dat wanneer één mainstream publicatie een bericht publiceert, de rest van de wereld over elkaar heen buitelt om ook dit bericht te brengen. Dit bleek duidelijk het geval met een UFO waarneming voor de Ierse kust afgelopen vrijdag van een aantal verkeersvliegers.
De Ierse luchtvaartautoriteiten gaan onderzoek doen naar meldingen van piloten over ufo's. Een piloot meldde afgelopen week een ongeïdentificeerd vliegend object toen hij boven Ierland vloog. Het incident gebeurde afgelopen vrijdag, tijdens een vlucht van het Canadese Montreal naar Londen, aldus nieuwszender BBC. Ook andere piloten deden melding van snel bewegende vliegende objecten. De piloot vroeg omstreeks zeven uur ’s ochtends de verkeersleiding van het vliegveld Shannon of er een militaire oefening was, omdat het voorwerp zich ‘razendsnel verplaatste’. Dat bleek niet het geval.

Op zich natuurlijk niet zo verwonderlijk dat er na bovenstaande meer meldingen binnen komen van UFO waarnemingen in dat gebied.
Zo vertelt de Irish Mirror dat ze werden overstelpt met berichten van mensen die ook iets hadden gezien en één van die meldingen was afkomstig van Donal Brady die de onderstaande opname maakte ongeveer 12 uur na de melding van de piloten in de buurt van Cork.
Er schijnt dus wel degelijk iets gaande te zijn in het Ierse luchtruim.
Want wat gebeurde is helemaal niets nieuws. Hierna een opname uit 1962 waar in precies hetzelfde gebied de bemanning van een Aer Lingus toestel ook een UFO zag. Captain Gordon Pendleton legt uit dat hij samen met zijn co-piloot een vreemd vliegend object zagen zonder vleugels dat zich met grote snelheid door het luchtruim bewoog tijdens een vlucht van Cork naar Brussel.
Hoe er in het verleden werd omgegaan met UFO meldingen door piloten blijkt uit het volgende verhaal dat afkomstig is uit een eerder artikel:
Hoe de afgelopen decennia is omgegaan met betrouwbare UFO informatie door overheden blijkt uit de gebeurtenissen rondom vlucht 1628 van Japan Airlines.
We hebben hier te maken met de waarneming van een ervaren bemanning, waarvan de captain zelfs meer dan 10.000 vlieguren heeft.
Het vrachtvliegtuig was in november 1986 onderweg van Reykjavik naar Anchorage, toen het boven het oostelijk deel van Alaska een ontmoeting had met enkele UFO’s.
Wat hier vrij uniek was, was dat de UFO's te zien waren op de radarsystemen van de verkeersleiding. Al met al duurde de ontmoeting ongeveer 40 minuten en in die tijd zag de bemanning dat de kleinere UFO’s zich vervoegden bij een moederschip dat het vliegtuig bleef volgen.
Na de landing werd alles wat er gebeurd was gerapporteerd door de bemanning, inclusief tekeningen van de UFO's en het moederschip.
Als beloning voor het rapporteren van deze waarneming werd de gezagvoerder Captain Kenju Terauchi geschorst en mocht de eerstvolgende jaren niet meer vliegen.
Zoals je ziet zijn er door de jaren heen betrouwbare meldingen geweest van piloten in verkeersvliegtuigen. We zullen moeten afwachten of bij de gebeurtenissen in Ierland een officieel vervolg komt, of dat dit weer één van de zoveelste waarnemingen is die in een archiefkast zullen verdwijnen net zoals al de voorgaande. Kans is ook aanwezig dat het onderdeel uitmaakt van gecontroleerde disclosure. UFO's op het Brexit toneel!
Het goede nieuws is dat veel mainstream mensen nu toch wel beginnen te twijfelen over het al dan niet bestaan van UFO's. Een mooi voorbeeld daarvan zie je in de volgende nieuwsuitzending van Fox News.
Mensen gaan twijfelen omdat ze piloten toch hoger inschatten voor wat betreft waarnemingen dan doorsnee burgers. Dus, als het allemaal echt is dan zou het mooi zijn als vliegtuigbemanningen wereldwijd alles zouden rapporteren wat ze zien. Dat dit dan de nodige problemen kan opleveren blijkt uit de volgende video van Tyler van Secureteam.
Ook daar het verhaal van professionals uit de luchtvaartindustrie die melding maakten van de vreemde objecten naast hun vliegtuig en die opdracht kregen om daar onmiddellijk mee te stoppen omdat ze anders hun baan zouden kwijtraken.
Verder heeft Tyler ook nog een opname van een UFO die is gemaakt in de buurt van waar de vliegtuigbemanningen ze zagen vliegen.

You know – the Dark Side. There’s still a lot we don’t know about the uncharted territory on the far side of the moon, and the mission has the potential to open up whole new avenues of lunar study. A second mission planned for 2019, meanwhile, will be the first to return moon rocks to Earth in over forty years. The missions are named after Chang’e, the Chinese moon goddess, and show that the Chinese fully intend to become a leading superpower when it comes to space exploration.
The voyage to the dark side of the moon presents several new technical challenges. Because the moon is tidally locked, meaning the same side always faces us, astronomers here on Earth won’t be able to communicate directly with the Chang’e-4 rover on the dark side because the moon would block all transmissions. To overcome this, the Chinese space agency has launched a transmission relay satellite to the other side of the moon to bounce signals back and forth between the far side of the moon and Earth.
That satellite, named Queqiao, has defense analysts in the West worried. Any craft or satellite sitting in at the far equatorial side, or L2 point, would remain almost completely undetectable by current defense satellites if it should come flying back towards Earth. At a recent Air Force Association event, senior intelligence engineer Jeff Gosse of the Space and Missile Analysis Group at the Air Force’s National Air and Space Intelligence Center says that such a satellite could pose a unique threat to American defense satellites in traditional geostationary orbits (GEO):
You could fly some sort of a weapon around the moon and it comes back — it could literally come at [objects] in GEO…and we would never know because there is nothing watching in that direction. Why do you need a relay satellite flying around L2? So you can communicate with something that’s going to land on the other side of the moon — or so you can fly around the other side of the moon? And what would that mean for our assets at GEO?
Defending communications and support satellites has become a chief concern of the armed forces, particularly as Russia and other actors seem to be waking up their space-based arsenals. When politicians talk of war in space, they don’t mean zero-gravity laser rifle battles; they mean satellite-to-satellite warfare.
Taking out another nation’s GPS and communication satellites are an easy way to cripple forces on the ground.
Still, others aren’t so convinced that the Chang’e missions represent a new mineshaft gap for the Space Force, as there are perfectly peaceful reasons why a space agency would want a satellite on the dark side of the moon – particularly one sending a rover to said dark side. When the U.S. launched the Space Shuttle program, the Soviet Union feared that the shuttle was a new form of space weapon, and we all know how wrongthose fears turned out to be, right?

Reports of UFOs and bright lights off the southwest coast of Ireland have reached the Irish Aviation Authority, and they are investigating the case.
According to the report, the strange aerial activity started at 06:47 local time on November 9, Friday. Shannon air traffic control received a question from a British Airways pilot.
The pilot wanted to know if military exercises were conducted in the area after seeing something moving so fast.
The air traffic controller answered there was none.
The pilot reported seeing a very bright light while flying from the Canadian city of Montreal to Heathrow. The object was reportedly coming along the left side of the aircraft before it quickly veered to the north.
She had no idea about the strange object, which did not appear to be heading for a collision.
Another pilot from a Virgin plane joined in suggesting that it might be an object or a meteor re-entering the atmosphere of the Earth.
He said there were several very bright objects following a similar trajectory. He saw two bright lights over to the right that climbed away at speed.
Another pilot said the speed was around Mach 2, which was astronomical and twice the speed of sound.
The Irish Aviation Authority said they received reports from a small number of aircraft on November 9 of the strange air activity and filed a report. According to the IAA, the report will be investigated according to the confidential occurrence investigation process.

The sightings of UFOs over the coast by three sets of airline pilots has led to Ireland being seen as a hotbed of alien activity.
It has emerged the crews who reported an unidentified object streaking through the skies over Co Kerry are not alone.
Dublin Live has been inundated with reports of similar sightings around the country in recent weeks.
The Irish Aviation Authority has begun an investigation into the appearance of the mysterious objects which were first spotted by a British Airways pilot early last Friday.
But at around 4.30pm the next day Donal Brady reported another strange sighting while looking towards Cork city from Bishopstown.
He said: “I don’t know what it was. I was at my friend’s house and I’d just dropped off my daughter and stepped out to have a cigarette and just noticed this thing in the sky.
“It was extremely bright, a beautiful day. At first I thought it was a high-altitude airliner reflecting in the sun.
“I observed it for a minute or two and I noticed it was stopping, hovering and moving side to side.
“It wasn’t going in a straight line and it wasn’t going away from and wasn’t coming towards me.
“Then along came this plane and it wasn’t reflecting anything and I thought that was unusual.
“That’s when I started to video it. If it was an airliner you’d expect contrails and some lights, which there weren’t.”
Mr Brady thought no more about it until it was reported pilots from British Airways, Virgin and Norwegian Air saw an unidentified object over Co Kerry just before 7am last Friday.

He added: “I watched the video again and thought it was something that might be related to that. I’m not pushing it in any shape or form, it is what it is.”
Another Irish Mirror reader sent in a video of what appears to be a UFO in Co Carlow.
Gerard Pollard said: “On the 2nd November at 8.32am I saw two lights in the sky coming from the south west, over Mount Leinster.
“I thought at first it was an airplane heading to Dublin Airport.
“Then I noticed it was going too fast for a plane. They seemed very high in the sky.µ
“I took my phone from my belt and took a photo. I enhanced the photo to my iPad and you can just see two small light dots in the sky.
“I can say these two craft were travelling at great speed, but there as no sound from them.”
Meanwhile, Laura Byrne shared pictures of three dots she spotted over Wicklow town.

Vanwege een gebrek aan zonnevlekken kunnen we recordlage temperaturen verwachten in de bovenlagen van de aardatmosfeer, zo heeft een NASA-wetenschapper gewaarschuwd.
Het kwik in de thermosfeer zou als gevolg van de afgenomen zonneactiviteit weleens kunnen gaan kelderen.
Zonnevlekken worden nog niet volledig begrepen. Wel is bekend dat ze ontstaan in gebieden waar intense magnetische activiteit wordt waargenomen.
Temperatuurrecord
Deze zonnevlekken produceren ultraviolette straling die in botsing komt met deeltjes in de atmosfeer van de aarde, waardoor ze opwarmen.
Op het zonneoppervlak zijn dit jaar vrijwel geen zonnevlekken waargenomen, waardoor de bovenste lagen van de aardatmosfeer zijn afgekoeld.
“Hoog boven het aardoppervlak raakt onze atmosfeer warmte kwijt,” zei dr. Martin Mlynczak van NASA’s Langley Research Center.
“Als de huidige trend doorzet, wordt het temperatuurrecord in het hedendaagse ruimtetijdperk mogelijk spoedig verbroken,” voegde hij toe.
Afkoelt
En dat betekent dat het hier beneden ook kouder zal worden.
Mlynczak baseert zich op gegevens die zijn verzameld door de TIMED-satelliet van de NASA, die veranderingen in de atmosfeer van de aarde registreert.
De satelliet heeft ontdekt dat de thermosfeer op dit moment afkoelt en krimpt.
Met behulp van de satelliet wordt vastgesteld hoeveel warmtevasthoudende moleculen zoals koolstofdioxide (CO2) en stikstofmonoxide (NO) in de ruimte belanden.
Eén van de zwakste ooit gemeten
“We meten momenteel 33 miljard watt aan infrarode straling afkomstig van NO,” zei dr. Mlynczak.
“In vergelijking met meer actieve fasen van de zonnecyclus is dat 10 keer zo weinig,” vervolgde hij. “Mogelijk wordt het record binnen enkele maanden verbroken.”
De zonneactiviteit doorloopt een cyclus die ongeveer 11 jaar duurt. Momenteel is de zon relatief inactief, zoals blijkt uit het gebrek aan zonnevlekken.
NASA-adviseur Ron Turner zei verder dat de huidige zonnecyclus ‘één van de zwakste ooit gemeten’ is.
