Discovery of Hotspots Circling Milky Way Black Hole Has Astronomers Excited
The discovery ofwobbling "hotspots"circling the drain of a massive black hole offers exciting new evidence for the behemoth that lies at our galaxy's center — and the astronomer who first worked on this theory shares how 13 years of observations have finally paid off.
The new study, involving the work of by Avery Broderick, an astronomer from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, revealed three flares, or visual hotspots, emanating from the Milky Way's central black hole, also known as Sagittarius A*.
The team detected a wobble of emissions coming from the flares, allowing the scientists to detect the accretion disk — a growing mass of orbiting gas and debris — surrounding the black hole itself. In turn, the researchers were able to use the emissions to map the behavior of Sagittarius A*, Broderick told Space.com. [Images: Black Holes of the Universe]
Broderick's black hole theory built on earlier research by two teams that studied the galactic center of the Milky Way in near-infrared. This included the work of Reinhard Genzel, an astronomer from the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Garching, Germany, as well as researchers Andrea Ghez and Mark Morris of University of California, Los Angeles. At the time, their work revealed that the center of the Milky Way wasn't steady, but instead would drastically brighten about once a day for about 30 or 40 minutes, Broderick said.
Researchers think supermassive black holes exist at the center of most, if not all, large galaxies. Therefore, in 2005, while working alongside researcher Avi Loeb at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, Broderick argued that a periodic brightening observed at the heart of the Milky Way, also known as a bright infrared flare, was the result of an incredibly massive object such as a black hole.
This theory was further supported by evidence of a very bright, dense group of stars called a nuclear star cluster that surrounds the central region of the Milky Way. In addition, infrared observations showed that the stars at the very center of the galaxy orbit a dark object estimated to be 4 million solar masses in size, again suggesting the presence of a black hole, Broderick said.
Even still, there was not enough data to prove that a black hole truly exists at the center of the Milky Way, Broderick added — until now.
Sudden flare behavior
The three flares recently detected emanate from the central region of the Milky Way and are the product of gravitational lensing by the black hole, Broderick said.
"The black hole acts like the lens of a lighthouse. [There is] a localized emission region, but it's not the sudden brightening of the emission region itself that causes the flare," Broderick said. Rather, the gravity of the black hole bends the light from the emission and magnifies it for us to see. "That's what's responsible for the flaring — the manifestation of extreme gravity."
Based on this, Broderick and Loeb originally predicted that objects embedded in the accretion disk surrounding Sagittarius A* would exhibit a distinct wobble in their infrared emissions due to their orbital motion around the black hole. The researchers published their theory in a 2005 paper, as well as a 2006 follow-up study. However, at the time, the technology was not yet available to detect such a wobble, Broderick said.
That all changed with the launch of the GRAVITY instrument on the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in 2016. The precision and sensitivity of the GRAVITY instrument helped astronomers detect a wobble in emissions coming from the three flares in the accretion disk circling Sagittarius A*. Their findings were published Oct. 18 in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.
"While flares have been seen for a long time now … the key finding here is the characteristic wobble of the flares," which indicates that the material producing these flares is moving around a black hole, Broderick said.
The flares observed near Sagittarius A* occur when magnetic field lines close to the black hole break apart and reconnect. This process, also known as magnetic reconnection, releases large amounts of energy and charged particles, causing the telltale shine. The infrared emissions from the flares exhibit a characteristic wobble due to their orbital motion around the black hole. Specifically, as other emissions embedded in the accretion flow move around the galactic center, the center of light shifts, or "wobbles," Broderick said.
The material circling just outside the black hole's event horizon whirls at roughly a third of the speed of light. The orbital period of the flare — the time it takes to complete one orbit — is the same as that of the wobble, which astronomers observed once every 40 to 50 minutes. The short time scale is a result of the strength of gravity from the black hole and suggests that the material is orbiting incredibly close to the black hole, Broderick said.
"Thirteen years ago, our statement was that these flares were associated with the structural variability [of the galactic center] and that we were going to be able to use that structural variability to say something about general relativityand strong gravity," Broderick said. "The exciting thing is, that [statement] appears to be true."
Proving there's a black hole
The wobble of emissions coming from the flares is not the only sign suggesting that a supermassive black hole lies at the heart of the Milky Way. There's no doubt that a supermassive object with a mass about 4 million times that of the sun is located at our galactic core, but proving that it's a black hole has been challenging.
However, the center of the galaxy is also home to a nuclear star cluster comprising more than 500,000 stars. Based on Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity, astronomers are able to estimate the mass of the object lurking at the center of the Milky Way by measuring the speed of the orbiting stars and gas. This further supports the idea that the 4-million-solar-mass object is a supermassive black hole, Broderick said.
"There is no other object that we know of that could sustain all of that mass in such a compact configuration and not collapse," Broderick said. "If not a black hole, then it would have to be something extraordinarily exotic and outside the realm of what we understand today."
Furthermore, observations have revealed that material really does disappear from our galactic center. As this material is drawn inward toward that center, it gets trapped in the black hole’s growing accretion disk. While most matter in the accretion disk orbits safely around Sagittarius A*, material that gets too close risks being drawn past the event horizon, the point beyond which it can't escape the black hole's gravitational pull. Researchers can see friction created by the material flowing toward the event horizon causing that material to brighten, Broderick said.
"It becomes this sort of 'where did it go?' argument," Broderick said. "We have this material that we know is falling in towards a black hole, because we see its accretion luminosity, but we don't see the corresponding impact luminosity. Therefore, it must be disappearing somewhere."
The presence of an event horizon beyond which lies a black hole is therefore the most logical explanation for the behavior observed at our galactic center, Broderick said.
"It's extremely exciting on a personal level to see a prediction actually pan out," Broderick said. "I think this marks a moment in the history of science, where black holes are going from something of curiosity to something that is fundamentally real."

Het is niet de opwarming van de aarde die ervoor zorgt dat op een bepaalde plek op Antarctica het ijs is gesmolten, maar een geheimzinnige ondergrondse warmtebron.
Dat er meer gebeurt onder het ijs/de grond op dit continent wordt bewezen door de ontdekking van een ingang naar deze mysterieuze wereld.
Soms is het om gek van te worden. Je weet dat er zich ontzettend veel dingen afspelen op het nog steeds bevroren continent Antarctica en wij krijgen daarvan maar een heel klein gedeelte mee.
Soms komt er iets via de mainstream media naar buiten, maar vaak zijn het amateur onderzoekers die door stug volhouden vreemde dingen op het spoor komen. Vandaag hebben we iets uit beide categorieën.
Het eerste is afkomstig uit mainstream informatie en betreft een door wetenschappers gedane ontdekking in de buurt van zuidpool. Er is daar een gebied dat ongeveer twee keer zo groot is als de provincie Utrecht waaronder een deel ontbreekt.
Wat men heeft ontdekt is dat het ijs niet smelt door hoge temperaturen van de buitenlucht, maar door een hittebron ergens diep onder het ijs. De manier waarop men dit heeft kunnen vaststellen is door boven dat gebied te het vliegen in een vliegtuig uitgerust met een speciale radar.
Ook schijnt men in de hete rotsen onder het ijs radioactiviteit te hebben ontdekt en hoewel de wetenschappers zeggen dat dit opwarmingsproces misschien al duizenden jaren aan de gang is, hebben ze in werkelijkheid geen flauw benul wat die ondergrondse hittebron nu eigenlijk is.
Dit is natuurlijk nog maar één van de vele geheimen die zich op dat continent nog steeds verbergen onder het ijs.
Het tweede vreemde fenomeen van vandaag betreffende Antarctica heeft niets te maken met wetenschappers, maar met een volhardende amateur onderzoeker die op Google Earth iets merkwaardigs ontdekte.
Het is ontdekt in een gebied waar niet veel sneeuw ligt en duidelijk is dat het niet iets natuurlijks is. Het ziet eruit als een soort rechthoekige ingang naar een ondergrondse wereld.
De "ingang" is ongeveer 16 meter breed en 8 meter hoog. Wanneer je op de beelden hierna kijkt naar het omringende landschap, dan zie je dat deze "ingang" helemaal niet past in die omgeving.
Wat het precies is en waarvoor het dient weten we niet, dus mocht iemand kennis of een idee hebben, laat het ons weten.

The five-hour video (you can see it here) was immediately published in the magazine Ikaris and all of the data and pictures are on display on The Alien Project website. Fortunately, the results were summarized by a number of websites and they are indeed interesting. (You can get up-to-speed on the past story of the mummies here and here and here.) Here are some of the highlights of the latest presentation:
DNA tests of the mummies show no relationship to any known human or animal
The bones of the mummies are hollow but rigid, similar to the structure of bird bones. There is visible wear at the joints between the bones which indicates that the beings were of advanced age and that they were actually alive – in other words, the mummies were not assembled from various parts.
3D scans of the insides of the mummies show that the bones, organs, muscles, fat, fat and possible eggs are in the proper locations for the creatures to have been living beings.
The data does not match any known species, making it highly likely that these are an unknown species with an evolutionary path separate from humans.
The features that look like eggs in the mummy Josefina are of various sizes, indicating differing stages of development.

The presence and apparent approval of the presentation by MP Armando Villanueva Mercado lent legitimacy to the announcement, although he admitted that the Peruvian Ministry of Culture turned down an invitation to attend. The audience was populated with plenty of university archeologists and experts in the field of mummy studies, which is a big field in Peru. As expected, there was plenty of disagreement at the end of the presentation, with many repeating the same complaint they’ve had throughout the history of these three-fingered mummies – that they were not allowed to participate in or even observe the study and analyses of the remains and that the whole process did not follow proper scientific procedures. On the other hand, the audience also contained plenty of believers and new converts and there is expected to be more and detailed coverage of the report.
Is this the announcement that changes everything? If not, who would go to such lengths to perpetrate a fraud? (Yes, we hear you, moon landing skeptics.) Yes, the name “Alien Project” Is presumptuous and many of the participants in the many announcements about these mummies have been wrong before. At this point, if The Alien Project (and the Peruvian government and the World Congress on Mummies which rightly protect the dignity of the remains of past Peruvians, whatever they might be) do not allow outside scientific analysis and review, the three fingers on the alien mummy meter are still stuck between “Skeptical” and “Unproven.”
On the other hand, the needle on the “Three-Fingered Alien Mummies!” Broadway musical meter is speeding towards “Hey kids! Let’s put on a show!”
Poor Mars rovers. Those plucky little robots get rocketed on a one-way mission to the Red Planet, only to live out their usefulness cold and alone on the desolate, lifeless rock. Good thing they don’t have feelings, though, right? Just wait until we start sending AI-equipped anthropomorphic robots to distant planets to toil themselves into obsolescence or be torn apart by giant insectoid aliens. It’ll be a lesson in empathy, that’s for sure.
“WHY WAS I PROGRAMMED TO FEEL SHAME?”
One of NASA’s active Mars rovers, Opportunity, has been operating for more than 55 times its intended lifespan, but has been inactive for months since a planet-wide dust storm engulfed the Martian surface in darkness back in June. With no way to gather solar energy to charge its batteries, the Opportunity rover went into hibernation mode until it could absorb enough energy to phone home once the sun came back out.
The haze from the Martian tempest began to clear up a few months ago, but NASA scientists and engineers have been unable to wake the sleepy Opportunity rover. However, Opportunity appeared to suddenly gather enough strength to beam a short transmission back to Earth this week. Deep Space Network, an automated Twitter account which tracks NASA activity, announced that a NASA sensor was receiving data from Opportunity. Space watchers began to rejoice that the long-lasting, seemingly unbeatable Opportunity was reawakening.
Opportunity has sent back some breathtaking images of useless rocks and dust.
However, a few hours later, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California retorted via Twitter that the signal was in fact not from Opportunity. Naturally, the internet exploded with claims of “UNKNOWN TRANSMISSIONS FROM MARS” and “MYSTERIOUS SIGNALS FROM OUTER SPACE” and while we would all love for that to be true, it turns out there’s likely a much more boring and banal explanation. There always is, isn’t there?
JPL scientists say the signal was a false alarm, most likely a blip due to a false positive or contamination from test data. Still, that won’t stop the tin foilers from claiming that NASA routinely lies to us or that this is likely a cover-up of something big. Would NASA hide proof of anomalous transmissions? Is something strange afoot with Opportunity?
Probably not. Still, with every strange signal or anomalous transmission comes the hope that someday one, just one, will be the one. Will it happen before humankind inevitably nukes itself to radioactive ash?
Residents of Southern California flooded social media overnight with posts wondering about a mysterious flash of light seen in the skies in the early morning hours of November 20. Most of the witnesses described the phenomenon as an “explosion” in the early morning sky. Whatever it was, law enforcement agencies throughout the region aren’t saying anything. What happened in the skies over California?
If San Diegans saw it at night through all of the city’s light pollution, it must have been bright.
Local news outlet KTLA reports the phenomenon was seen throughout Southern California, with residents posting from Long Beach to San Diego and as far inland as Riverside. Whatever the event was, it must have been large. Twitter was full of residents’ concerned and curious posts describing what they saw and asking others if anyone had any answers. “Definitely saw 2 streaks of light in the sky this morning on Vern’s dog walk. Managed to snap a pic of the 2nd one, right next to a plane,” posted user @ROBBWEBB3. Webb managed to grab a picture of the phenomenon, a picture which definitely makes the event look more streak-like, possibly suggesting a meteor event in the atmosphere.
Was this merely a meteor exploding?
Just a few days prior, two separate drivers in Arizona were shaken up when unidentified falling objects struck their vehicles, shattering one’s sunroof and damaging the windshield of another. Both drivers suspected meteorites, but some astronomers aren’t convinced. A similar event happened in San Diego the same day, with two cars sustaining damage from mysterious falling rocks. One driver was injured when one of those rocks hit him in the chest. The California Highway Patrol found no pedestrians nearby and considers the incident a mystery.
Could these events be connected? With the Leonid meteor shower currently underway, there’s no telling what tiny bits of rock might actually survive their fiery collisions with our atmosphere. Of course, there’s always the chance that this alleged explosion in the sky could be something altogether different and stranger. With no official explanation, this one’s still up for debate.
Then again, we all know how official explanations go.
A video from NASA was released on Friday, November 16th that teased many space enthusiasts on the space agency’s plan to send humans to the moon permanently and eventually to Mars. A Colorado-based company called Lunar Outpost will also play a vital role in the effort for a return trip to the moon by building small exploratory moon rovers.
Part of the video says “We’re building the next chapter of American exploration. Returning to the moon to stay so we can go beyond to Mars.” Near the end of the nearly two and a half minute video, you hear the words “We are NASA and after 60 years, we’re just getting started.”
It was just 49 years ago on July 20, 1969 when man first walked on the moon and now there are plans for humans to reside there permanently. It’s hard to believe how much advancement has been made in less than fifty years.
In other important space news, the highly anticipated details have been revealed on where the Mars 2020 rover is going to land. After carefully analyzing over 60 potential locations on the “Red Planet” as the best place for the rover to land, NASA has decided on the Jezero Crater for the landing destination.
The mission is scheduled for July in the year 2020. The rover’s mission will include looking for signs of habitable conditions in ancient times, as well as searching for microbial life. In addition, it will collect soil and rock samples and place them in a hidden and safe location on the planet. NASA and the European Space Agency are currently looking at a future mission to Mars in order to gather the samples and bring them back to Earth for testing.
They chose the Jezero Crater because it has rich terrain and landforms that could be as old as 3.6 billion years so this could potentially answer important questions in the history and evolution of the planet. The 28-mile-wide crater is located on the western end of a huge impact basin called Isidis Planitia and it is slightly north of the equator. Since there was once a river that flowed in the crater billions of years ago, it’s quite possible that the rover will be able to find ancient molecules and other signs of life there.
There is some nervousness, however, when it comes to the actual landing process on Mars as the location has several boulders, rocks, cliffs, and ripples in the sand that could potentially cause problems for the rover. The Jezero Crater landing location is fifty percent smaller than the area chosen for the Curiosity rover in 2012 when it landed in Gale Crater.
The Mars 2020 will take off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida and that will certainly be a day to remember as this new mission could potentially find ground-breaking new evidence of life on Mars.
When filmmaker Dave Beaty heard about the strange encounter in November of 2004 between dozens of ‘Tic-Tac’ shaped UFOs, several Naval fighter jets, and the USS Nimitz battle group, he was captivated. Much like the rest of the tireless researchers, filmmakers, and writers who forge the Ufological narrative, Beaty stayed up late, spending countless hours of his personal time totell a story.
The film uses a mix of stock Navy footage and digitally rendered animations to provide a detailed yet quick recap of the now famous 2004 Nimitz UFO Incident. While much of the documentation of that event is still classified or hidden away by various other interests, the film tells the story with as much accuracy as possible.
Beaty explained in an interview,
“I am using the primary witness accounts available to the public. I have interviewed several of the USS Princeton Air Controllers and radar techs. CDR. David Fravor was interviewed by dozens of journalists, as were CDR. Slaight, and Senior Chief Day. The “Female Pilot” gave a detailed briefing to the AATIP program. These primary witnesses to the event, the radar screens, the cockpits, and the close up visual observations of some of the world’s most highly trained observers leads me to believe what they say is very accurate. So in making this re-creation, I used all those details. Location, time, date, weather, seas, jets, altitudes, speeds, distances, directions. These things are known for the most part. The part that is fiction is what the pilots said to each other – the dialog is fiction.”
As was reported in August of 2018, an unredacted Nimitz report was leaked on Chris Mellon’s website. Mellon, a previous intelligence advisor to the Clinton administration, and To The Star’s Academy’s National Security Affairs Advisor, has made no official comment concerning the leak, but rumors circulating within the UFO community are pointing to a hack. The unredacted report contained the names and personal information of the various pilots involved, including the mystery female pilot who has yet to publicly come forward. Unfortunately, some unsavory profiteering and opportunistic UFO enthusiasts seem to have already released her name publicly on the internet. Beaty, who undoubtedly has seen the unredacted report, has taken the high road, as many other researchers have, and kept her name out of the video.
USS Nimitz
Beaty explained that creating CGI renderings and making films is his day job. He expressed that this project was different.
“It’s one of the most satisfying things to do, to create stories with total freedom, with no deadline and with no one reviewing proofs endlessly and changing my work.”
With over 18,000 views to date, interest has allegedly been expressed by some mainstream networks such as A&E. Whether this documentary becomes a funded full feature project or not, the true importance of it lies in its desire to seek out more witnesses to the incident.
Beaty explained that those witnesses are out there, he’s been contacted by some.
“In the film I provide an email of anon@thenimitzencounters.com for people to contact me if they have had sightings from military ships or planes. So far I have had several vets reach out to relate their sightings. We are working with a group to help organize military witnesses of UAP. We also hope to convince some of the USS Roosevelt sailors from 2015 to come forward. We believe that the Gimbal video shown by the NYT article was filmed on January 26th, 2015, off the coast of Florida by the Red Rippers squadron.”
The Nimitz event is still shrouded in a lot of mystery. While there is little doubt that the incident occurred, the UFO myth-making machine has been at work spinning various tales which are often sold as knowledge but fundamentally hinges purely on speculation and belief. Moreover, if more information is available, it is being held by very few people with various agendas. Whether Beaty knows it or not, this project of his is an attempt to democratize the knowledge surrounding this incredible event.

UFO research has never been perfect and it is haunted by a lot of ghosts in its historical and ideological past. However, the UFO community, much the phenomenon it chases, always works at a grassroots level. With every attempt to gain more ‘official’ insight, it slips the proverbial leash and becomes something else entirely.
At the end of the film, any people with information concerning the Nimitz event, or other military UFO sightings, are asked to e-mail Beaty, and that their anonymity can be maintained. While checks and balances will obviously need to be put into place to ensure misinformation and disinformation isn’t disseminated as fact, the testimony of witnesses concerning this event becomes much more difficult to control. This is, curiously, one of the greatest aspects of the UFO community. No one owns the UFO narrative or discourse; some try to corner the market to ensure their ideological interpretation is popularized, but it isn’t long before rifts and tears eat away at them.
This indie UFO documentary is incredibly necessary, not just because it tells a good story and highlights the events which occurred in 2004, but because it attempts to bring much-needed information, data, and testimony out of the darkness and into the light.
Move over, Tabby … there’s a new flickering star in town and this one behaves a lot more like it has a megastructure built around it than you do. Astronomers in Chile report finding a mysterious star whose light dims by 80 percent on an irregular schedule and they can’t figure out why. An alien Dyson sphere? Dust? Aliens cleaning house and kicking up a dust cloud?
“We don’t know what the object is. And that’s interesting.”
Astronomer Roberto Saito of the Federal University of Santa Catarina in Brazil is the co-author of a study in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society describing VVV-WIT-07, “an unique and intriguing variable source presenting a sequence of recurrent dips with a likely deep eclipse in July 2012.” The title of the study implies that this star could be another Boyajian’s star (astronomer Tabby Boyajian discovered the blinking KIC 8462852, also known as Tabby’s star) or a Mamajek’s object (astronomer Eric Mamajek found 1SWASP J140747, a star that dims due to a massive orbiting gas planet with rings). However, the data is inclusive and they speculate whether it could also be a young stellar object, a star surrounded by clumpy dust structure, a main sequence star eclipsed by a nearby extended object or a self-eclipsing R CrB (R Coronae Boreali) variable star.

Or … it could be a star surrounded by an alien-made Dyson sphere. While hypothetical, the idea of a megastructure surrounding a star and harvesting its energy for space travel, manufacturing or other energy-consuming activities, received a lot of speculative press when Tabby Boyajian discovered her blinker in 2015.
“I was fascinated by how crazy it looked. Aliens should always be the very last hypothesis you consider, but this looked like something you would expect an alien civilization to build.”
Jason Wright, an astronomer from Penn State University, was one of the leading proponents of at least considering a Dyson megastructure as a possibility for causing the dimming of Tabby’s star. Each time anything that looks like a blinking star appears, that possibility is brought up, scoffed at by skeptics and pushed by believers, as hypothetical as it might be. However, VVV-WIT-07 is a puzzler, which explains why the WIT in its name stands for “What is this?”
The puzzle starts with the amount of dimming. While Tabby’s star darkened by 20%, VVV-WIT-07 nearly disappears as it dims by 80%. It also dims more sporadically than KIC 8462852. When asked for her opinion on this blinking star, Boyajian, who openly considered the possibility of a Dyson megastructure, said in ScienceNews:
“If this phenomenon is the same as what’s happening with Tabby’s star, then we can’t invoke an elaborate explanation for what’s happening in both systems. If you’re starting to see stars similar to this all over the place, then it’s got to be a really common thing that happens in nature. That’s really cool.”
Not as cool as a Dyson megastructure, right?

During a live news broadcast two reporters were surprised when a box shaped UFO began to cross the top of the large screen TV. As they are talking you first notice the UFO on the far right at 16 seconds into the video, but they don't notice the UFO until 36 seconds into the video.
The shape and size of this UFO is very similar to one I reported over New York a few days ago. This box shape is actually more common than you might think. Without wings, propellers, jets this boxy UFO moves across the sky at a very high speed, much too fast to be a balloon. Remarkable, and this is 100% proof that aliens are trying to gentle their way into the hearts and minds of the public.

NASA recently announced it will land its Mars 2020 rover in Jezero Crater. The 45-km-wide site was once filled with water and features rich geology that could tell scientists a lot of things about the planet’s troubled history. There’s also a chance that the rover mission might find evidence for past life on the Red Planet.

Jezero Crater sits on an ancient river delta, just north of the Martian equator on the western edge of Isidis Planitia. The crater was formed billions of years ago by a meteorite impact and, at one point, became filled with water to a depth of about 250 meters. Although the water is long gone, sediments at the site could still contain a record of microbial life — if any existed in the first place.
“The delta is a good place for evidence of life to be deposited and then preserved for the billions of years that have elapsed since this lake was present,” Mars 2020 project scientist Ken Farley said during a press conference.
Carbonate rocks present at Jezero may also tell us how surface water and the Martian atmosphere interacted billions of years ago. In fact, it is Jezero’s diverse geology that distinguished it from other potential landing sites for the 2020 rover. NASA had also considered Northeast Syrtis, which contains some of the oldest rocks on Mars, and Columbia Hills, which the Spirit rover explored between 2004 and 2011.
Jezero is also more accessible than the other sites, although that doesn’t mean that touchdown will be a piece of cake. NASA is doing everything it can to minimize the risk of landing the rover in a boulder field, a sand trap, or on the edge of a cliff.
“Getting samples from this unique area will revolutionize how we think about Mars and its ability to harbor life,” Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, said in a press release.
The $2.4-billion rover will launch in July 2020, landing on Mars seven months later, in February 2021. The six-wheeled, nuclear-powered Mars 2020 rover has almost the same design as NASA’s Curiosity rover, which has been operational on the surface of Mars for the past six years. Like Curiosity, Mars 2020 will be deployed on the Martian surface from a rocket-powered “Sky Crane” platform. NASA has also refined its landing technique, which means Mars 2020 should be better equipped to doge risky areas.

Unlike the Curiosity mission, Mars 2020 will also bring samples back to Earth. Although it’s not certain how this will happen, NASA says it hopes to send a new mission to Mars in the late 2020s to retrieve the rocks collected by the rover and return them to Earth by the early 2030s.
In the meantime, NASA has more immediate things to worry about. On 26 November, a robot called InSight will land on the surface of Mars, tasked with studying the Red Planet‘s interior.
TheTree of Lifeis a metaphor established by Charles Darwin to give some perspective to evolution. Every living organism on Earth has a home somewhere on the Tree, and by looking at it, we can see how species relate to one another.
While we’ve known about a type of microbe called hemimastigotes since the 1800s, it turns out we were totally wrong about where they fit on the Tree of Life — because they didn’t fit on any of the existing branches.
Home Of Its Own
In a study published Wednesday in the journal Nature, researchers from Dalhousie University detail their discovery that hemimastigotes are so unlike anything else in the Tree of Life, they require the creation of a brand-new branch.
“It was clear from our analyses that hemimastigotes didn’t belong to any known kingdom-level group, or even to a known ‘super-group’ of several kingdoms together, like the one that includes both animals and fungi,” researcher Alastair Simpson said in a news release.
“This one little collection of organisms is a whole new group at that level, all on its own,” she continued. “It’s a branch of the Tree of Life that has been separate for a very long time, perhaps more than a billion years, and we had no information on it whatsoever.”
Evolution Of Tech
The Dalhousie team was only able to reach this conclusion thanks to an advanced genetic analysis technique that wasn’t available when scientists first discovered hemimastigotes.
“That such a distinct form of life could be hiding literally under our feet,” Simpson said in the press release, “is a sharp reminder about how little we still know about the diversity of life on Earth.”
And as our technologies advance even further, there’s no telling what else we might discover — or how many other branches we might add to the Tree of Life.

Is that the USS Enterprise blurring as it makes the jump to warp speed?
Well, no. But a new photo of the galaxy cluster Abell 1033 certainly does call the famous "Star Trek" starship to mind.
The image, which was released Thursday (Nov. 15), is a composite that combines observations in optical light as well as X-ray and radio wavelengths, the latter two of which are represented by the colors purple and blue, respectively. The optical data was gathered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, the X-ray by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and the radio by the Low-Frequency Array network in the Netherlands.
Abell 1033 lies about 1.6 billion light-years from Earth. The object is actually two galaxy clusters coming together in a dramatic, hugely energetic smashup that's generating shock waves and other forms of turbulence in this patch of space-time.

"In Abell 1033, the collision has interacted with another energetic cosmic process — the production of jets of high-speed particles by matter spiraling into a supermassive black hole, in this case one located in a galaxy in one of the clusters," Chandra mission team members wrote Thursday in a description of the image.
"These jets are revealed by radio emission to the left and right sides of the image," they added. "The radio emission is produced by electrons spiraling around magnetic field lines, a process called synchrotron emission."
The observed radio emission in Abell 1033 spans a whopping 500,000 light-years, Chandra team members said. The electrons responsible for this emission have likely been re-energized, a result that researchers announced and explained in an October 2017 study. You can read it online for free at arXiv.org.
The newly released image is an example of pareidolia, which describes the tendency of the human brain to see familiar shapes in more or less random data. Other examples include the famous "Face on Mars" and the various creatures that some folks see in the Red Planet rocks photographed over the years by NASA's Curiosity rover.

As Earth's tectonic plates dive beneath one another, they drag three times as much water into the planet's interior as previously thought.
Those are the results of a new paper published today (Nov. 14) in the journal Nature. Using the natural seismic rumblings of the earthquake-prone subduction zone at the Marianas trench, where the Pacific plate is sliding beneath the Philippine plate, researchers were able to estimate how much water gets incorporated into the rocks that dive deep below the surface. The find has major ramifications for understanding Earth's deep water cycle, wrote marine geology and geophysics researcher Donna Shillington of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University in an op-ed accompanying the new paper. Water beneath the surface of the Earth can contribute to the development of magma and can lubricate faults, making earthquakes more likely, wrote Shillington, who was not involved in the new research.
The deep water cycle
At earthquake-prone subduction zones, where tectonic plates dive beneath one another, massive amounts of sea water are dragged into the planet's interior, a new study has revealed.

Water is stored in the crystalline structure of minerals, Shillington wrote. The liquid gets incorporated into the Earth's crust both when brand-new, piping-hot oceanic plates form and when the same plates bend and crack as they grind under their neighbors. This latter process, called subduction, is the only way water penetrates deep into the crust and mantle, but little is known about how much water moves during the process, study leader Chen Cai of Washington University in St. Louis and his colleagues wrote in their new paper.
"Before we did this study, every researcher knew that water must be carried down by the subducting slab," Cai told Live Science. "But they just didn't know how much water."
The researchers used data picked up by a network of seismic sensors positioned around the central Marianas Trench in the western Pacific Ocean. The deepest part of the trench is nearly 7 miles (11 kilometers) below sea level. The sensors detect earthquakes and the echoes of earthquakes ringing through Earth's crust like a bell. Cai and his team tracked how fast those temblors traveled: A slowdown in velocity, he said, would indicate water-filled fractures in rocks and "hydrated" minerals that lock up water within their crystals.
Missing water
The researchers observed such slowdowns deep into the crust, some 18 miles (30 km) below the surface, Cai said. Using the measured velocities, along with the known temperatures and pressures found there, the team calculated that the subduction zones pull 3 billion teragrams of water into the crust every million years (a teragram is a billion kilograms).
Seawater is heavy; a cube of this water 1 meter (3.3 feet) long on each side would weigh 1,024 kilograms (2,250 lbs.). But still, the amount pulled down by subduction zones is mind-boggling. It's also three times as much water as subduction zones were previously estimated to take in, Cai said.
And that raises some questions: The water that goes down must come up, usually in the contents of volcanic eruptions. The new estimate of how much water is going down is larger than estimates of how much is being emitted by volcanos, meaning scientists are missing something in their estimates, the researchers said. There is no missing water in the oceans, Cai said. That means the amount of water dragged down into the crust and the amount spouted back out should be about equal. The fact that they aren't suggests that there's something about how water moves through the interior of Earth that scientists don't yet understand.
"Many more studies need to be focused on this aspect," Cai said.

Astronaut and Research Pilot Joseph A. Walker
On May 11, 1962 NASA pilot Joseph Walker said that one of his tasks was to detect UFOs during his X-15 flights. He had filmed five or six UFOs during his record breaking fifty-mile-high flight in April, 1962. It was the second time he had filmed UFOs in flight. During a lecture at the Second National Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Space Research in Seattle, Washington he said: “I don’t feel like speculating about them. All I know is what appeared on the film which was developed after the flight.” – Joseph Walker. To date none of those films has been released to the public for viewing.
Joseph A. Walker was a Chief Research Pilot at the NASA Flight Research Center during the mid-1960s. Walker was the recipient of many awards during his 21 years as a research pilot.. He joined the NACA in March 1945, and served as project pilot at the Edwards flight research facility on such pioneering research projects as the D-558-I, D-558-II, X-1, X-3, X-4, X-5, and the X-15. He also flew programs involving the F-100, F-101, F-102, F-104, and the B-47.
Walker made the first NASA X-15 flight on March 25, 1960. He flew the research aircraft 24 times and achieved its fastest speed and highest altitude. He attained a speed of 4,104 mph (Mach 5.92) during a flight on June 27, 1962, and reached an altitude of 354,300 feet on August 22, 1963 (his last X-15 flight). He was the first man to pilot the Lunar Landing Research Vehicle (LLRV) that was used to develop piloting and operational techniques for lunar landings.

On June 12, 1987, President Ronald Reagan spoke the people of West Berlin at the base of the Brandenburg Gate, near the Berlin wall stating, “. Mr. Gobachev, Tear down this wall.” The speech began the destruction of Soviet Communism.
Ronald Reagan claimed to have seen UFOs on at least two occasions. Allegedly, before he was governor of California, he and Nancy were on their way up the Pacific coast highway to a dinner party. They arrived half an hour late and distraught saying they had seen a UFO and that was why they were late. They did not explain the time delay and may have had a life-altering experience for the two of them if not an actual abduction experience. Later when Governor of California, he asked his pilots to chase a UFO. He alerted the Navy to one of his sightings, and he and Nancy believed that Egyptian hieroglyphics referenced extraterrestrial flying crafts.
On June 8, 1982, President Reagan spoke to the British House of Commons and called the Soviet Union an “Evil Empire.”Almost a year later, President Reagan in a television speech announced on March 23, 1983, the US was building the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) later known as the
“Star Wars” program. The system was designed to destroy missiles in flight.
In 1985, at the summit meeting Soviet premier, Mikhail Gorbachev states, Reagan surprised me by asking, “What would you do if the United States were suddenly attacked by someone from outer space; would you help us?” I said, ‘No doubt about it.'” “He said, ‘We would help you too.”
“At our meeting in Geneva, the U.S. President said that if the earth faced an invasion by extraterrestrials, the United States and the Soviet Union would join forces to repel such an invasion. I shall not dispute that hypothesis.”
Gorbachev confirmed the earlier Geneva conversation in a speech to the Central Committee in the Grand Kremlin Palace.
In the Summit Meeting in Iceland during October of 1986, astonishingly, Reagan offered to share the Stars Wars weapons system with the Soviets. The Star Wars system was the most expensive weapons system ever conceived and parts are still being designed and built.
That alien space invaders scenario was so compelling to Reagan that he repeated it in public speeches, on multiple occasions, while president. Reagan talked about this alien threat all the time, to the apparent consternation of his staff and was receiving UFO data on a regular basis.

The Soviet Union mysteriously gave up its position as one of the world’s greatest powers and splintered into multiple nations. Its leader at the time was Mikhail Gorbachev who has made several public statements about the reality of a covert extraterrestrial presence visiting Earth. He stated,

The Dr. Edgar Mitchell Foundation for Research into Extraterrestrial and Extraordinary Experiences, or FREE, is a 501c3 not for profit academic research foundation. : A completely non -statistical non -linear non-unitary framework in which “God does not play dice …” (Einstein) that describes the physical foundations of consciousness is presented for the first time. At its core is the insight that the missing link between current physical descriptions of reality and a credible physical framework for consciousness is provided by post quantum mechanics (PQM): the extension of statistical linear unitary quantum mechanics for closed systems to a locally -retrocausali non-statistical non -linear non-unitary theory for open systems through the introduction of a back -reaction potential and its implications. PQM is to orthodox QM as General Relativity (GR) is to Special Relativity (SR). PQM and GR both share the same metaphysical organizing principle that one way actions without a compensating reaction or back -reaction means an incompleteness in the theoretical model leaving out important physical phenomena. We gleaned the final piece in the puzzle of how consciousness arises from the material world from a result relating to long range collective excitations in microtubules described by Stuart Hameroff in a recent Fetzer Foundation conference in London. Herbert Fröhlich suggested that almost any many-particle system when properly pumped far off thermodynamic equilibrium can be put into a robust macro -quantum coherent state immune from environmental decoherence. Indeed, we suggest that all life forms are an example of Frohlich coherence that is intimately connected with locally-retrocausal PQM back reaction’s violation of the de Broglie guidance equation that was assumed by Bohm in his 1952 pilot wave theory. Using nature as a guide combined with nano -technology points the way to the construction of naturally conscious artificial intelligence machines capable of hacking into current-day quantum cryptographic networks. Furthermore, one can imagine attaining the transhumanist agenda. For example, the consciousness of a genius like Stephen Hawking could be uploaded to the post-quantum Cloud and then downloaded to a healthy body or android.

North Key Largo – On November 13, 2018, I was taking a picture of sunrise in North Key Largo. The photo was taken at 7:31 AM. I was going out trapping. It is strange looking and I don’t know what to call it. It looks to have legs. I would like your opinion on what it could be.

Idaho Light
Boise — I was in front of my house helping a friend hook on to a camp trailer. I looked up to see what appeared to be a crescent of dim bluish light in the sky northeast of me. I noticed it was moving and was very large. As it got closer I could see a dark boomerang shaped object moving behind the light at around 200 knots. It seemed to put off a light glow all around the craft like a static glow. It had no lights. Once it was overhead it turned west and I lost it to the horizon. Three of us clearly witnessed it at about 8000 feet. It had to be close to a half mile across. This all happened a mile away from the Boise airport and Gown Field Army Base. My family has owned and flown small planes my entire life so I’m pretty confident in the altitude and speed it was traveling. Thanks to MUFON CMS

Las Vegas— I was driving to work November 3rd, 2018, when I saw this object in the sky not moving on my 22 minutes drive. Once to the casino at Red Rock resort I parked on the top level 6th floor of the garage to observe the object better still thinking it had to be a balloon. Yet it was not tethered to anything on the ground. I took these three photos and still cannot seem to know what it could be hovering stationary above the skyline.

Jackson–We were at Six Flags amusement park-on October 30, 2018 at 8:30 pm and I looked to the right and saw a huge hovering object. At first we thought it was a drone, or blimp then we realized how massive the object was. It was huge. It was large and dark black making no noise at all. It had flashing lights on the three tips of the triangle and a top part similar to a diamond shape. After watching for a minute or so trying to grasp what it was it slowly crept forward and then it was gone and I couldn’t see it anymore. The photo is a depiction. Thanks to MUFON CMS

Greensboro — I was walking back to my apartment from work. I saw two other students looking up at the sky and thought they were watching the clouds for rain. I looked up and first noticed the c and then the circular shape. The first thing I thought was am I really seeing a UFO?’ I decided to call my roommate who, luckily told me to take pictures because I was awestruck. The object was stationary but took up a huge part of the sky. From work to my apartment is about a mile and the object appeared very close the entire time I was walking. The light blinked in about two second intervals from violet to turning off. Almost to my apartment, I looked back up in the sky and it was gone. Welches — I was on vacation taking photos of the scenery with my cell phone on November 10, 2018.
When I reviewed them, I found an anomalous light that looks like a glowing golden disc seen from its side. I did not see this while taking the photos.
This may be some sort of camera glitch, but I took a couple of photos of that spot from the same vantage point all at the same time and the light is only in one photo. Thanks to MUFON CMS

Shamokin – Slow moving bright lights were seen on November 10, 2018. Very strange never seen anything like it. Shamokin is a city in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, surrounded by Coal Township at the western edge of the Anthracite Coal Region in central Pennsylvania. Monroe Institute — Look at the alien face that showed up Monday in some photos that I took. I didn’t see it until today. Looks a lot like K2A and others that I have snapped through the years. This is what Brett had to say about them: “Yes, definitely. I ran into this before… one interesting phenomena. Mark ran into while looking at NASA jpegs from the Moon and Mars, and also with pictures that he shot of UFOs.. He would drop a most basic filter in this old Photoshop program over the image and Wallah pictures of Zeta type ETS, but sometimes the imaging was like coded data historical possibly, happened repeatedly very peculiar. Australia Light
Brisbane— My 14 year old son and I were just going to town ,as we started down our drive way my son said “What is that?” Pointing to a set of bright red lights that to me seemed like 3 across the top and 4 or 5 across the bottom of an hovering object about 1 mile away. I quickly grabbed my phone. My son said, “Wow did you see that light it was like a shooting star came out of the ground and flew into the red lights?” I finely got my camera on and took a pic and video. I see that these set of red lights appear on camera as an orb so it’s a very short video. This was taken just as my son shouted.
The light shot up and it glowed brighter for a second and then faded away.

Canada Objects
Halifax — I was in an airplane on descent into Nova Scotia filming the coastline, as it was a clear day when I spotted two stationary objects above the clouds. They appeared to be hovering. It’s hard to say how far they were from my position, but they were quite small from my point of view, so I’d guess they were pretty far away. I was amazed to see them, and glad that I’d been recording with my phone so that I could try and get a better look at them. When I looked at the footage later, and zoomed on the disc shaped object, it has a definite lenticular shape. I lost sight when my plane moved away from the location. Thanks to MUFON CMS

I was in Google Map to check an animal park in Northern France where I saw these of cylindrical shape figures over the park and a third one but very faint image. The date on the Google Map was June 2012. The park is called: Parc Animalier Saint Croix France. I took a screen shot of the objects.

Ireland UFO
The Irish Aviation Authority is investigating reports of bright lights and UFOs off the south-west coast of Ireland. It began at 06:47 local time on Friday 9 November 2018 when a British Airways pilot contacted Shannon air traffic control. She wanted to know if there were military exercises in the area because there was something “moving so fast”.
The air traffic controller said there were no such exercises. The pilot, flying from the Canadian city of Montreal to Heathrow, said there was a “very bright light” and the object had come up along the left side of the aircraft before it “rapidly veered to the north”. She was wondering what it could be but said it did not seem to be heading for a collision.
Another pilot from a Virgin plane joined in and suggested it might be a meteor or another object re-entering the earth’s atmosphere. Trevor Buckley reports very interesting report on Shannon high level on November 9, 2018, with UFO report over County Kerry at 6:30 pm

I went to see the chrysanthemum festival in Hwasun-gun, Jeollanam-do, South Korea, and was at the festival scene. I did not know it at the time and I found it while sharing a photo with my wife. I thought it might be a balloon or other float, but it was not a good thing to be around. I did not know about the operation at the time of photographing. I am writing about the idea of a UFO. Tauranga— The moon was near full and I like moon photography on May 31, 2018. Stood on my deck this night and after taking moon shots, noticed how bright Venus was close by. Gostyn— On October 16, 2018 at 6:27 PM, a woman was waiting to watch her son practice soccer and snapped some photos. Later when reviewing the photos she found some strange formations of lights in the sky. She did not see anything unusual. She said that she took the photos outdoors and not through the windows of a vehicle. She took the photos with an I-phone X. She wanted to know if the lights were UFOs.
Note: The lights could be reflections of ground lights off of the clouds, but that is speculation. The ground lights in the photo would not cause the reflection. I expected the line of the plane in lights to show with stars but after shot was taken an object appears in shot and is static with circular outline and green light. No idea what it is and how it appears in photo but couldn’t be seen while taking photograph! CMS

A stream of galactic debris is hurtling at us, pulling dark matter along with it
It’s traveling so quickly it’s been described as a hurricane of dark matter
Scientists are excited to set their particle detectors at the onslffaught
Technically, “S1” is a stream of debris from a dwarf galaxy torn apart by the Milky Way’s gravity, passing through space. What S1 is pulling along with it, though, is being described in a far more dramatic way, as “a dark matter hurricane.” Scientists believe this companion stream of dark matter (DM) is hurtling through us right now at a jaw-dropping speed of 500 kilometers a second. Hence the “hurricane” metaphor. Is it time to head down into our quantum storm cellars? Not quite. This is dark matter, after all, material we can’t directly perceive and with which we can’t interact, so no worries. On the other hand, this blast of DM has the potential to afford us our best glimpse yet of the elusive stuff.
A team lead by Ciaran A. J. O’Hare developed a series of models that predicted what would happen as all of this DM came charging through our solar system, and published research presenting resulting signatures whose detection would signify S1 and its dark matter.
Stream time
Astronomers have, over time, observed about 30 such streams wending their way across the heavens. S1 was first discovered about a year ago by the Gaia satellite. What makes it exceptionally interesting, though, as the paper says, is that the “stars in S1 impact on the Solar System at very high speed almost head-on. A coherent stream of DM associated with S1 hits the Solar System slap in the face.”
The reason scientists suspect S1 of having a companion stream of dark matter is that its source galaxy seems to have been similar to an existing galaxy, the Fornax galaxy. The paper asserts, “If this prediction is true then the S1 stellar stream must be accompanied by a substantial DM stream.”
What the hurricane looks like from here
IMAGE: Dark matter is a form of matter that cannot be detected by telescopes as it emits no radiation.
To register dark matter, our best detection devices seek out WIMP — “weakly interacting massive particles” — and axions, both suspected of being component particles of dark matter. With current technology, it’s unlikely we’ll get a glimpse of WIMP, but as particle detectors improve in the future we may, someday. There’s more hope for axion haloscopes finding dark matter, since the energy spectrum the dark matter generates should present a distinctive broad frequency bump with a recognizably narrow peak. This leads the authors of the research to a certain optimism if the dark matter is made up of axions, predicting “truly excellent detection prospects if the DM in our galaxy is made up of axions.”
Pay more attention to the earthly weather
There’s arguably nothing more intriguing in physics than dark matter, which many believe comprises some 85 percent of the universe, all while being imperceptible to us. You’re likely to be in the presence of it as you read this. The hurricane made of dark matter, then, is nothing to fear. In fact, it’s exciting in that it gives our scientists an improved, if long, shot of finally detecting some, testing the limits of our current detectors, and envisioning future ways of solving the mystery of dark matter.
